Playing golf along the Grand Strand during the summer can seem more like an extreme sport....but it does not have to. With the humidity steadily rising and the thermometer approaching 100 degrees. Here’s a list of tips and techniques to consider before you head out into the summer swelter for your next tee time. Play Early. The hottest temps are typically 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., so consider playing early. You will be able to avoid the crowds and complete your rounds faster. Plan ahead. Start to hydrate with extra water at least three days prior, this way you won’t feel as dehydrated on the day and start gulping down liters of liquids. Although sports drinks offer a boost of chloride, potassium, and sodium if you sweat, some may have high concentrates of glucose or fructose, which should be avoided. What to wear. Dress with comfort in mind. Whites and pastels reflect the sun’s rays better than darker colors. Wear loose fitting, lightweight shirts that will allow air to circulate, which helps you maintain a normal body temperature. Moisture-wicking fabrics pull the moisture away from the skin, which prevents irritation of the skin and allows you to move without being uncomfortable and wet from perspiration. Hats protect your ears and neck. Wear sunglasses to avoid fatigue through eyestrain. The American Academy of Dermatology advises people to use a protective SPF 30 sunscreen on hot, humid days, as well. You may also want to purchase a protective lip balm. Based on the reviews and feedback we received throughout a busy spring season, here are five courses that are riding a “hot” streak – and that we feel are worthy of your consideration for teeing it up this summer! The Dunes Golf & Beach Club (9.2 overall rating) Consistency is a virtue, and The Dunes Club has had it in spades for decades. The co-host of the 2014 PGA Professional National Championship hasn’t missed a beat since, and continues to give golfers a direct sense of what has made it special for nearly 70 years now. From reviewer Phil, who played it on June 1, 2015: “(This is one of the) oldest golf courses in the Myrtle Beach area. This is just a great layout. It reminds me of a plantation type golf course and is a fine layout offering a very different type of golfing experience. I like this golf course a lot and enjoy the diversity of holes and shot making requirements. As I recall it requires 5 left-to-right tee shots and 5 right-to-left tee shots so bring your ‘A’ game. Just a grand old golf course that is fun and interesting to play.”

World Tour Golf Links (8.9 overall rating) With a collection of holes inspired by famous tracks from across the globe, World Tour gave its spring guests plenty to talk about. “Course was in great shape; staff was great,” said reviewer Doug on May 28, 2015. Reviewer Dan, a 6 handicap from Ferguson, N.C., was impressed by the presentation as well, chiming in on April 20, 2015: “This course is amazing. As an experienced golfer this place brought chills as to how much the holes resembled their inspirations. Staff is amazing and helpful and the course is in great shape for (Myrtle Beach having had) a long and wet winter.”
TPC Myrtle Beach (8.5 overall rating) Host of the 2000 Senior Tour Championship, TPC Myrtle Beach remains the only design in the Grand Strand area to receive a 5-star rating in Golf Digest’s “Places to Play.” Recent visitors saw first-hand how this challenging design offers a first-rate experience. Reviewer Edmund from Chesterfield, Mich., had this to say after his May 18, 2015 visit: “This course is by far better than any of the ‘premium’ courses in Michigan. The entire track was outstanding and the cost to play was a MOST pleasant surprise. Also, it was an honor to meet a fellow vet from ‘The Big Red 1’ as I was making my way inside. Looking forward to returning!”

King’s North at Myrtle Beach National (8.9 overall rating) The crown jewel of Arnold Palmer’s renowned course collection just off Hwy. 501, King’s North offered spring visitors an exceptional experience. Reviewer Nick, a 5 handicap, offered the following from his April 8, 2015 visit: “Great experience from parking the car to pulling out of the driveway. Staff was excellent, well organized and friendly. Huge clubhouse with plenty of merchandise. Course was fantastic ... greens perfect, many memorable holes, i.e. ‘The Gambler,’ island green. Top notch, will be back for years to come.”
Crow Creek Golf Club (8.6 overall rating) Just a stone’s throw across the state line in Calabash, N.C., Crow Creek has been somewhat of a hidden gem in the Grand Strand golf scene. Yet since its February 2000 opening, Crow Creek has seen thousands of return visitors who yearn for an aesthetically pleasing design that offers plenty of challenge from its championship tees. Said reviewer Swee of Singapore on May 10, 2015: “Very well maintained course all around. What makes it stands out from the rest I played is that the real estate is set back far enough to give the course an openness that is lacking in the others. I rate Crow Creek as the best I played in Myrtle Beach.“

t first glance, golfing purists might be inclined to dismiss International World Tour Golf Links as a gimmick. They might decry its unabashed variety from hole to hole, or that it’s “only” patterned after some iconic holes and courses. And they’d be missing out on an extraordinary golfing experience. For those with a true sense of adventure and an open mind, World Tour is arguably the most unique course on South Carolina’s Grand Strand. Mimicking a technique utilized by the best cover bands, the 18 holes here are replicas of some of the most famous ones golf has to offer. St. Andrews No. 1, Augusta National No. 16, Winged Foot No. 18 - they’re all here. And like seeing those aforementioned musical acts, the trip around the sport’s renowned links comes at a fraction of the price of a trip to Scotland or the payoffs necessary to grab a tee time at the site of the Masters. Located just west of Myrtle Beach’s city limits, the drive onto the World Tour

Through the corridor appears the clubhouse with the flags of the countries the course behind it represents. Once inside, you’re welcomed by a glass-encased trophy presented to World Tour when it earned the Myrtle Beach Area Golf Course Owners Association 2004 Golf Course of the Year. The course has changed some since then, including a reduction to two nines, but the existing two are more than enough to whet the appetite of those who can’t globe trot the world playing the originals. We’ve seen some pros navigate Amen Corner better than others, and John Daly’s “Tin Cup”-type adventures on the 15th at English Turn. World Tour invites you to join those memorable moments with a club in your hands. Each hole includes a plaque describing its inspiration. Your round, though, starts at the birthplace of golf, St. Andrews.

World Tour’s opening hole is designed with the Old Course’s No. 1 in mind. Playing as long as 370 yards, this version shares a fairway with No. 9, patterned after St. Andrews No. 18. The green is divided from the final few feet of the fairway by a slim creek (more on that later). Your second hole figuratively zips you back across the pond as you take on the par-5 16th at Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina. A pre-fairway water hazard is only the beginning, as three bunkers are also in play from the tee box. Another fairway bunker and five greenside ones accompany some moderately placed trees.
to the one where Arnold Palmer stood and raised his right arm for photos back in 1995 during his final British Open appearance. And to think, that’s only the midway point of your day. Winged Foot Golf Club’s East Course is your starter for the Championship nine. At World Tour, the 380-yard par 4 and its recently re-touched green starts you on what is mostly a highlight reel of American gems. There’s also the massive dogleg of Cypress Point Golf Club, Royal Troon’s par-3 No. 8 that gives photographers a dynamic backdrop for postcard-worthy shots, and all three phases of Augusta’s Amen Corner (in succession, of course). World Tour also dabbles in the former host site of the U.S. Open, San Francisco’s Olympic Club, as well as Oakmont Country Club.
TPC Sawgrass’ 17th hole is the next stop. There, on World Tour’s par-3 No. 3, a 23-yard deep island green sits no more than 132 yards from whichever tee box you’re using.
It all wraps up at Championship’s No. 9, patterned after Bay Hill Club’s No. 11. It includes the wide landing area and diagonally approachable green split by two bodies of water. It’s a fitting end to a round played in every direction possible.

Summer Golf In Myrtle Beach: Make It A Family Affair By Jim Maggio
The game of golf and I endured an inverse relationship for two decades: the more access I gained, the less I played. Living the mid 90s life in Nassau County, N.Y., I played once a week without fail. So what if it meant a bleary-eyed, pre-dawn trek each Saturday morning to Bethpage State Park? I had a 7-Eleven coffee in one hand, buttered bagel in the other, and waited in line to get a coveted pre-9 a.m. tee time - because any tee time after that meant staring a 6-hour round square in the face. Fuhgeddaboudit. If you lived in New York and loved the game (but not killing an entire day) you 70
sucked it up, got your butt out of bed at 5 a.m. and waited in line. It’s just what you did. A move to Phoenix in 2001 brought a comparative smorgasbord of playing possibilities - but less chance to take advantage as the needs of my young family continued to grow. Living the past 10 years in “The Golf Capital of the World” with a career in the industry had only increased those options - and frustrations. Until now. The saving grace? My two oldest boys, 16 and 13. Whenever they

The Advantages to Living in a Golf Course Community
One of the most appealing types of planned communities is a golf course commu-
nity – even for those who do not play golf. These communities have much to offer, from young families just starting out to empty-nesters to retirees. The obvious attraction is the golf course itself, which can run around and/or through the subdivision. The course can offer serene views of trees, green space, and water. The openness of the course and its landscaping give residents beautiful sights and in most cases, fresher air. For those who enjoy the game of golf, community residents often receive discounts or incentives to use and or belong to their neighborhood course. Quite often, driving to the golf courses can add a great deal of time to the golfer’s day. However having one that is just around the corner is very convenient and a time saver. Along with the golf course, these communities tend to have much to offer, including clubhouses, fitness/wellness centers, pools, tennis court, basketball courts, playgrounds, walking paths, ponds, planned activities for residents, and more. While the common grounds of golf course communities are usually as immaculately kept as the course itself. Being a community built around a sport, those living within tend to have a more active and healthier lifestyle. There is also the sense of prestige attached to living in a golf course community. Golf course communities are not for everyone. Many times, they call for higher monthly and/or annual dues. Homes, especially those that back up directly to the golf course, may have strict deed restrictions and home owner’s association rules that must be obeyed. Those that back up to the course could have spectacular views, but could also have to deal with poorly shot golf balls, course noise, and a lack of privacy during the warm weather months, depending on which portion of the course the home borders. Each prospective buyer should sit down with their REALTOR – an area expert who can help the buyers with the weighing of the pros and cons. Mayor John Rhodes Welcomes You To Myrtle Beach Rhodes first was elected as mayor in 2005 and then re-elected in 2009 and 2013. Accomplishments during his tenure include construction of the 1.3 mile oceanfront boardwalk, which has led to at least $20 million in private investments. These include the SkyWheel, a 180-foot tall enclosed Ferris wheel, and three oceanfront dining complexes.

ohn Rhodes isn’t technically a native of Myrtle Beach, but after 50-plus years, he’s the next best thing. The city’s current mayor discovered Myrtle Beach as a teenager when he came to a friend’s house-party. “I called home and said I was staying,” Rhodes told his parents in Raleigh, North Carolina. In those early days, he worked as a lifeguard, but he quickly developed his business sense. By age 27, he was managing the Yachtsman Hotel, followed by the Ocean Dunes Resort. Through the years, he also has owned and operated seven restaurants. In 1981, Rhodes became executive director of the Beach Ball Classic, one of the nation’s premier high school holiday invitational tournaments. Top teams and talent from around the United States travel to Myrtle Beach to participate in this annual tournament, now in its 35th year.

The city also welcomed The Market Common, a multi-million dollar urban village complex surrounded by Grand Park, several thousand new homes and a new, 400-acre International Technology and Aerospace Park. To increase sports tourism, Myrtle Beach added indoor and outdoor athletic complexes, hosting thousands of traveling teams each year for soccer, baseball, softball, basketball and football. As mayor, Rhodes pushed for passage of the Tourism Development Fee, a one-percent sales charge that creates $25 million annually for out-of-market advertising. Since adopting the fee in late 2009, the Grand Strand has seen a 25 percent increase in annual tourism and a $9 billion economy. With such can-do thinking, Mayor Rhodes now has turned his attention toward Savannah’s Playground, a fullyaccessible facility unlike anything else in South Carolina. Rhodes has raised nearly $1 million so far for construction of the playground on city property at Grand Park. John Rhodes may not have been born in Myrtle Beach, but he is the area’s biggest booster and supporter. As mayor, he’s also the first person to welcome you to Myrtle Beach.
