Second Solo Exhibition of Ginoe

The stories that inform our local culture and history often come to us in the guise of religion, evident in the distinctiveness of our rituals, prayers, and chosen imagery. The pieces of Banal/ Banal (The Sacred Ordinary) tell stories which are firmly rooted in his hometown of Silay City, which binds Ginoe’s sense of self and community to his Catholic upbringing. To resurface and question the significance of the mythologies that shape both community and individual, Ginoe creates sumptuous religious images superimposed onto the commonplace, resulting in a visual negotiation between the Banal na Diyos, and the banalities of everyday life. The first painting that greets us at the door is a story familiar to many Negrenses, the Santo Nino flood that hit Silay City in 2001. The locals would claim this to be the retribution and moral lesson of the Santo Nino disguised as a thirsty child who was refused a glass of water. On the opposite wall are twenty four eulogies posing as banderitas of St. Joseph the Worker who is reimagined as a sacada, preparing for another day of work. In Banal/ Banal, we get to observe the forces of prayer and power- working for the needs of the oppressor, and for the oppressed, either to empower, to educate, or to subdue, setting the cogs of society in motion.
