UNLOCKING THE CREATIVITY OF YOUNG PROFESSIONALS

Creativity is in the DNA of Indonesian people That is, the real artefacts of creativity as we can see during this era of disruption In the age where mass production is the norm, people are looking for individuality, creativity, and customizations.

Creativity, driven by the digital economy, has lifted up the Indonesian economy The number of start-ups in Indonesia is mushrooming Indonesia is the fifth globally in terms of a start-up based on local creativity and the digital economy. We are above Germany, France, Italy, Brazil, and hundreds of other countries

The way we do education, we teach our students up to university level, we follow the same curriculum, the same way of teaching, going to the same classroom, meeting the same teacher. This locks the creativity of our kids Now, the Ministry of Education and Culture has coined up Kampus Merdeka to unlock the creativity of students and young generations to express themselves and to capitalize on the DNA of creativity of Indonesia. Through Kampus Merdeka, we can send our children’s abroad to stay and intern in design houses in the centre of development in many countries

1. BE PASSIONATE

"When you ' re passionate about something you can't stop exactly at 5, you need to keep going and make sure that it's good" - John Kudos

One of the most important things to have when building your career is to have passion for the things that you ' re doing. You can't grow to stick to the 9-5 routine. You have to constantly challenge yourself beyond your boundaries and this requires extra commitment and discipline from yourself

2. ASK QUESTIONS

"Whether you ' re a junior, whether you ' re a senior, no matter where you are, someone would have knowledge somewhere" - Griffen Lim

Most people early in their careers might not have the courage to go beyond their comfort zones and speak up to others. This is an issue that they need to resolve. In order to grow your career, you need to constantly challenge yourself and never be afraid to ask questions You have to be aware of the questions you ' re asking Whenever you ' re meeting someone, try to strike a conversation, ask questions, and develop a genuine relationship with the other person. It is important to master the skill of active listening, which refers to the ability to understand your conversation partner and to respond in a proper way This will help you to build up a genuine relationship with the other person and will help to open up many doors for future opportunities that you can take.

3. EXPRESS YOURSELF

"Being able to give them the rationale and train of thoughts is very important" - Adrian Emanuel

As a designer or architect, you will most likely work with a team of other professionals. Therefore, it is crucial that you ' re able to express yourself in a proper way and articulate your line of thoughts precisely When proposing something, you should be able to develop a proper argument and line of reasoning for your proposal. If you ' re able to articulate your rationale and train of thoughts well, it is easier for other people to respond to your ideas and it would improve the atmosphere of collaboration in the room

CAREER TIPS
| CAREER TIPS C E N T R E O F E X C E L L E N C E O N P R O F E S S I O N A L D E V E L O P M E N T 10

1. As a graphic designer with a solely Indonesian background in education and work experience, how to enter the global stage especially with the limitations posed by the pandemic?

Answer: The key is to build up your portfolio and experience You need 3 things to succeed overseas:

1) Showing others that you have the capabilities to get the job done,

2) Having the right connections to help you get in touch with these firms,

3) Having the skills to communicate well with overseas professionals

You can start doing the first one and building up your professional network through professional organizations The third point is to be able to speak some foreign language English is usually sufficient in most places

2 How do you recommend those with a business background to collaborate with designers?

Answer: I think the key is having empathy and open-mindedness to be able to understand their perspectives. Business people would be keener on building the project in the most costeffective and fastest way possible while designers would be keener on building the most optimal design Balancing these two requires humility from both sides to understand each others’ interests. Be open-minded and empathetic.

3 How do you face the challenge of understanding and dealing with local regulations in your business? How do you cope with that?

Answer: It is understandable if you don’t understand local regulations while doing business

You can try reading up more to familiarize yourself with local conditions Try to talk to local players to know the intricacies of different markets.

4 How do you decide that a project is something that you want to undertake?

Answer: I think you need to consider the things that you are good at and the things that you wish to learn Balancing out these two things is the most important aspect in deciding on a project

AUDIENCE Q&A

5. Do you incorporate your personal style into your clients’ designs? How do you balance this with your clients’ needs and expectations?

Answer: My personal “style” is my method of solving the client’s brief That means my style and the client’s requirement is already baked in on the design proposal. Nothing to balance with the client's needs and expectations As a designer, it’s fundamental that you need to answer your client’s needs and expectations Otherwise, call yourself an artist

6. Having moved around the world, did anyone have obstacles in terms of visa?

Answer: Visa has always been the major hiccup for expats More established companies usually have more resources and willingness in helping you to process your visa.

7 To Adrian, after working with several huge names in the industry, are there any mindset changes or career strategies learnt while working with those organizations?

Answer: Career strategy for me is big to small with the end goal of establishing my own firm Learn the proper ways from big firms, implement in smaller firms, and spread responsibility in small firms (much easier to convince) and familiarize myself with small scale operations since I am going to start small when I establish my firm The other option is to stay for an extended period of time in a well-established firm, I didn't pursue that option in the interest of time Mindset change from the experience working in different huge names is there for sure Each institution has its own culture, strength, and uniqueness on how they are successful in the industry I was able to identify and compare the strength and uniqueness of their secret recipes from the best of the best of each different firm and log it and deploy it when I encounter similar circumstances.

8 To Adrian, as someone from Indonesia who is aiming to make it to these large firms, how does one stand out amongst other applicants?

Answer: You need to be good Make sure your craft is on par with the best of the best This is a given On top of that, start building connections with someone that works in the firm that you are applying to. Education, credentials, professional licensure definitely helps. Insight on the type of projects and location that they are working on is also important as you can use that information to leverage yourself more
