OVERVIEW

OVERVIEW The Indonesia - UK EV Forum 2022 is hosted by GIPA in collaboration with the Jakarta Capital City Government (DKI Jakarta) and Transjakarta, supported by The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN), Connected Places Catapult, Indonesian Embassy in London and British Embassy in Jakarta. Electrifying Indonesia's transport sector has the potential to boost Gross Domestic Product by $31.5 billion by 2030. The Indonesia - UK EV forum seeks to unleash these opportunities by connecting the key UK and Indonesia players to advance the electrification agenda ahead of the G20 Indonesia Presidency in light of net-zero transition priorities. The forum brought together leading thinkers, business leaders, academicians and professionals in various industries to discuss breakthroughs and challenges in accelerating sustainable mobility and its EV infrastructure ecosystems as well as collaborating to address the global shortage in upstream minerals to better improve end to end supply chain to meet global demands in EV auto batteries.

PRESS COVERAGE

Notable Events Chairman of GIPA, Steven Marcelino, introduced this forum with welcoming remarks from both His Excellency Dr. Desra Percaya (Indonesian Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Ireland and International Maritime Organization), Richard Graham (Prime Minister of Trade Envoy to Indonesia and ASEAN economic community) and a keynote address from Anies Baswedan (the current Governor of Jakarta). Two critical memoranda of understanding (MoUs) were signed between Transjakarta and Switch Mobility, as well as MRT Jakarta and Crossrail International respectively, are set to take action immediately. Transjakarta is Jakarta’s bus rapid transit system and serves the majority of the citizens, and Switch Mobility is one of the leading electric vehicle manufacturers. Their MoU states that Switch Mobility will aim to supply electric buses to Transjakarta. MRT Jakarta is the rapid train transit system for Jakarta that began its operation in 2019, and Crossrail International is the UK-government specialist advisory board to provide strategic advice for clients’ delivery of complex rail schemes. Their MoU looks to start electrifying more railways within the MRT Jakarta network. M. Yana Aditya (Transjakarta CEO) and Sarwant Singh (President of Switch Mobility), as well as William Sabandar (CEO of MRT Jakarta) and Paul Dyson (CEO of Crossrail International), signed their respective MoUs, formally signalling the efforts to advance the UK-Indonesia collaboration in this end-to-end transportation electrification agenda.

PRESS COVERAGE

The marquee event was celebrated with congratulatory remarks from Anindya Bakrie (Chairman of Supervisory Board at KADIN) and Baroness Neville-Rolfe (Chair of UK-ASEAN Business Council). Baroness noted how Indonesia showed commitment to addressing climate change and it cannot come at a more pivotal time, as Indonesia takes the ASEAN chair in 2023. Shortly after the celebration, Deputy Head of CoE Economic Diplomacy at GIPA, Alifa Starlika introduced a panel discussion to discuss the acceleration of sustainable mobility and promotion of net-zero supply chain ecosystems, moderated by Dr. Amy Hochadel (Director of Global Business at Connected Catapult Places). A panel discussion between Yoga Adiwinarto (COO of Transjakarta), Mike Hawes (CEO of Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders), Sarwant Singh (President of Switch Mobility), and Gilarsi Setijono (CEO of VKTR Mobility Technology) shortly took place. The key takeaways from the panel discussion include the need for international collaboration to drive large environmental initiatives and accountability to ensure those commitments remain strong. With the goal to electrify 30,000 buses, Mr. Adiwinarto noted how one barrier is the price for an electric bus to be double of a standard gasoline-powered bus. Therefore, creative solutions such as battery leasing (and necessary battery stations) are needed to reduce upfront costs for buses, demand for materials that are still scarce, and maintain the quality of public transport. The UK has shown significant success in electrifying their public transport, with 1 out of 2 buses being electric and the other being hydrogen-powered. Indonesia looks to continue being a pioneer in Southeast Asia by developing the first bus rapid transportation system that is environmentally friendly and set an example for neighbouring cities. A Q and A session shortly followed to wrap up the event.
