Due to unforseen circumstances the South Gippsland Railway will not be operating any rail services until further notice.
The South Gippsland Railway runs a collection of historical diesel locomotives and railcars between Leongatha, Korumburra and Nyora along a 36-kilometre section of former Victorian Railways mainline.
We are asking for the help of volunteers for The South Gippsland Railway.
The steep and windy track skirts its way along the hills of the beautiful Strezlecki Ranges, with spectacular views across Gippsland and towards Phillip Island and the Wonthaggi coast. Check out: sgr.org.au for more info Ph: 03 5658 1111

The tree-lined banks of the Canal and rivers are haven to much bird life, including the beautiful Azure Kingfisher; ancient river gums, twisted and gnarled river red gums are home to Koalas, Wedge Tail Eagles, Whistling Kites and Sea Eagles. Along the river bank ancient Canoe trees are seen, remnant reminders that the land was occupied by the Brayakooloong clan of the Gunaikurnai for
10,000 generations prior to European settlement. Soon you are in view of the nationally important Swing Bridge. This was completed in 1883 to the design of notable architect engineer John Grainger and bridge builder Peter Platt. The Bridge still swings open to allow vessels to enter the Port of Sale.
It is a ‘must see’, not only for its historic importance but also for the extraordinary symmetry of its design, best viewed from aboard the Rubeena. This historic cruise is of up two hours duration special charters can be arranged.

East Gippsland Fishing Report Lakes Entrance Plenty of King George Whiting are being caught in Cunninghame Arm, towards Bullock Island. Also, in weed beds around the Kalimna Wall. The town jetties are producing Bream and Trevally on prawn and pilchard. The channels are good for Salmon and Flathead, on hard bodied lures.
Lake Tyers A recent “comp.” Saw Flathead to 80cm being landed, mainly around Trident Arm and Toorloo Arm, using prawn and strips of slimy mackerel. The area between No. 2 jetty and the opening is also worth a try. Blackfellow’s Arm has some good size Bream, taking prawn, pilchard and plastics.
Mitchell River Bream are biting between Eagle Point and Shadoof Lodge, on spider crab and prawn.
Tambo River
Marlo
The Snowy River is murky, so the fishing is slow. However, the Brodribb has Bream, Mullet and Estuary Perch at the mouth of Lake Curlip. Hard bodied lures, spider crab and prawn are picking up fish. Bream are also around the rock groynes, and Marlo jetty.
Bream are active in the lake and river. Sandworm and prawn are best bait. Trevally and Flathead are in the channel, taking plastics and peeled prawn. Luderick are biting on sandworm in the lake.
Tamboon Inlet Mud Point has Bream and Tailor taking prawn and hard bodied lures.
Mallacoota Plenty of Bream are in the Bottom Lake with Flathead in the Top Lake. Soft plastics, prawn and sandworm are best bait! Tailor are around the wharf, with metal lures catching fish.
The Gibbo and Mitta Mitta Rivers have Brown Trout to 1kg. Worms are producing fish.
Paynesville Flathead have been landed at the back of Raymond Island, on soft plastics and pilchard. Bream and King George Whiting are in McMillan Strait. Best bait is peeled prawn and pippi. School prawns are in the canals.
Holland’s Landing The wharf has some large Bream being taken on spider crab and prawn.

EXPOSURE AND DEHYDRATION It is essential to protect yourself and others aboard your vessel from the elements such as heat, cold, sun, wind, rain and water. The effects of exposure can be reduced by using simple precautions such as drinking water, eating snacks, dressing for the conditions, and using sunscreen
PENALTIES
Boating is meant to be enjoyable and no one wants their trip spoilt by incidents or accidents. The masters of all vessels must have a marine licence (and PWC endorsement where applicable) to operate on any Victorian waters. Penalties exist for those vessel operators who do not follow the rules. On-the-spot infringements may be issued. In addition to any penalty that may be imposed on the person for any hoon offence, a vessel may be embargoed, impounded, immobilised or seized.
Lake Corringle has Luderick.
The mouth at Lake King is producing King George Whiting and Bream. Shrimp and sandworm are taking fish. Good size Bream have been caught around the car bodies, using sandworm and prawn.
FATIGUE There are many factors which may contribute to fatigue while boating. Boat and engine noise, sun, glare, vibration, wave action, wind, temperature and the availability of food
and water all add to the effects of a long day awake on the water. Fatigue will affect your ability to make good decisions and compromise your capacity to be a responsible master.

Energy Saving tips for the Summer If you are looking to save on your electricity costs over summer there are several simple things you can do to be cost effective. It may sound obvious but beginning with wearing the right attire for the weather can go a long way to saving you money.
Wearing loose, light clothing can immediately lessen the need for fans and air conditioners to be switched on.
Keeping doors, windows and curtains closed will ensure your home stays as cool as possible and making sure exterior doors are sealed so cool
air does not escape while operating air conditioning. Replace old incandescent and halogen light globes with energy-efficient globes. Energy-efficient globes save on power and will last longer. Light globes can sometimes be replaced
for free or at reduced cost depending on government initiatives. Consider using solar hot water. As heating water is typically a large percentage of costs on your electricity bills, this can be a very costeffective measure. Victorian residents can receive an Energy Saver Incentive for installing solar hot water systems. Installing solar panels, which produce
electricity from sunlight and contribute to the energy supplied to your home or business can vastly offset your energy costs. Victorian residents are also eligible for an Energy Saver Incentive for installing and operating solar panels. If you are a new solar customer you can also receive a minimum of 6.2 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh) for any

excess electricity that you return to the grid. This rate is reset annually by the Essential Services Commission in line with the wholesale price of electricity.
For more information on the Victorian Government incentives for installing solar energy solutions visit www.switchon.vic.gov. au.

life played in shaping who we were.
We are a family with dairy farming roots in Gippsland.
– all the things society says we need and have to do to fit in and play our part.
I left the family farm at 17 to complete a conservation biology degree and began working in the industry in Gippsland soon after.
I kept thinking “we’ll get ‘there’ soon and then I’ll be able to enjoy life”.
So one year ago my husband got a job on a nearby dairy farm and we moved into a house on the farm. It was the right decision.
Then we started a family. We found ourselves being drawn back to farm life, partly because it became clear our son had inherited the farming genes, but we also valued the role farm

This absolutely had to change. I’d had enough. I was doing a lot of good things that I felt were within my means but it wasn’t enough anymore. I felt trapped – no time, no money, no support. What could I actually do to have a bigger impact – for me, my family, my community, and the earth that has always given me so much wonder and pleasure? I Googled the question and discovered the Plastic Free July Challenge – to refuse all single-use plastic for a month.
I was going to be the type of person I hoped my kids would be. Not just carers of the planet, but responsible active members of their community who are proud to be themselves and stand up for what they believe in. I completed Plastic Free July. It has been one of the most positive things I’ve ever done. It has revealed to me that I do have choices and I do have power to effect change. And it revealed to me that I have more supportive friendships and networks than I thought.
Incredibly, I also found that by focusing on this one issue of refusing single use plastic we improved our health, saved money, bought more local and ethical products and produce, learnt to make things from scratch, wasted less overall, and educated ourselves and others.

It struck a cord with me and I immediately began telling everyone on social media that this is what I was going to do (it was 3rd June 2015). I didn’t care anymore if they thought it was greenie garbage, I’d been silenced and held back by those attitudes my whole life. I was going to be the real me, not the dulled down version.

Servicing all of Gippsland at the lowest rates
Shire celebrates birthday and new Customer Service Centre Wednesday 02 December East Gippsland Shire Council opened the Bairnsdale Customer Service Centre today at 24 Service Street, next to the Bairnsdale Library. This move will make it much more convenient for our customers. They will be able to speak to Council staff, make payments and complete forms as part of their regular activities in the CBD, rather than making a special trip over to the Corporate Centre on Main Street.
Customers will still be able to conduct their business at the Corporate Centre while people become familiar with the new arrangement. Council’s other Customer Service Centres at Mallacoota, Paynesville, Omeo, Orbost and Lakes Entrance are already located close to the Centre of these towns. No matter which Customer Service Centre you visit, you will be able to complete the same tasks or view the same documents.
Some of the many tasks you can complete include buying tickets to Forge Theatre shows and performing arts events, disability parking permit applications, animal registrations, lodging permits and enquiries on roads, footpaths and bridges.
Centre, but it marks 21 years of the life of East Gippsland Shire Council since we were formed from the amalgamation of the City of Bairnsdale, Shire of Bairnsdale, Shire of Omeo, Shire of Orbost, Shire of Tambo and parts of the Shire of Rosedale.
Pictured Top: Mayor Cr Marianne Pelz with long-serving customer service officer Di Hodge and CEO Gary Gaffney cut the ribbon to officially open the Bairnsdale Customer Service Centre.

Community members were invited to join in the celebrations, which included a free sausage sizzle and birthday cake.

Lone Rug Hooker raises funds for Missions A lone Rug Maker from Loch, hopes to make a difference in the lives of families in the lowest castes of the people groups in India, and Southern Asia. Parents across Asia struggle to provide for their families. Children grow up illiterate, uneducated and taught they are worthless. More than 20 million boys and girls are trapped in social evils like child labour
and prostitution in order to support their families. Gospel for Asia’s Bridge of Hope program for children, turns these situations around for good. Children are educated, loved and nurtured, and thus have hope and a future. Chris Noorbergen from Loch, aims to raise money by teaching people to make beautiful and unique rugs-
for the floor or as wall hangings. The proceeds will go to support missions in India as well as Uganda. Rug hooking is both an art and a craft and originated in both North America and the United Kingdom where they were used as utilitarian items on bare dirt floors hundreds of years ago. Hooked rugs are made by pulling loops of yarn or woollen fabric through a woven base such as burlap. The loops are pulled

through the backing material by using a crochettype hook mounted in a handle for leverage, unlike latch-hooking which uses a hinged hook to form a knotted pile from short, precut pieces of yarn. Chris teaches workshops in her home in Loch on Fridays. Choices are a half
or full day workshop. 100% of the proceeds will be used to support missions. None will be held back for expenses.

99th Annual Neerim District Show History The first show held by the Neerim District Agricultural & Horticultural Society was in 1907, it was called the Neerim District Show and was over 3 days.
The first president, being N J Davey with the Secretary being, Phillip Knight. This show mostly comprised of school work and poultry, with all the harness events held in the main street of Neerim South and the horse events in Mrs. Aucterlonies’s paddock. Flowers and cookery competitions were held in the Mechanics Institute (which was back then located next to the pre-school) and then later on in W. Stephens Paddock. In the early 1920’s the show had become such a success that they ran a special train out from Warragul, this cost the Society 16 pound. This train carried passengers, stock and exhibits to the show grounds. In 1925, 16 acres of land was purchased from W Stephens at 45 pounds per acre and was financed by debentures at 5 pounds each. First trustees were J Swaffield, G Notman and T Algie, but only 3 or 4 debentures of all that were taken out, were ever claimed back from the Society.
There was no show held in 1927 following the devastating bushfires of 1926 in the district. In 1929 Electricity was connected the show grounds and later concrete sheds and showers, paid for by the Show Society, Neerim District Football and the grounds committee, the show was also very successful around this time and they were able to pay off the monies owing on the land. In 1961 it was moved, seconded and carried “that the Society transfer to the crown the whole of its land Neerim South to enable same to be preserved as a Perpetual Recreation and Agricultural Society Reserve”, so that grants could be applied for. A move that probably today is seen as not a good decision. Further land was purchased in 1963 from J W Dawson and a further section was rented from H Price to give a Northern entrance from the Main Road and in 1972 arena lights were installed. A Fat cattle section along with Pony Club events were held prior to the show, this proved very successful.
However during the late 70’s the show was unable to secure a land lease from H Price and was forced to move the show from Neerim South to its current location at the Neerim Recreation reserve.
The Show has continued to re-invent itself year after year by combining traditional show activities and competitions with crowd pleasing new and interesting events.
Now heading towards its 99th Show in 2016, 109 years later, the Neerim District Country Show is still going strong and continues to be enjoyed by the Neerim Community, competitors and visitors to the region.
It was the first Society to hold a show on a Saturday, this being the 28th of March 1928. The First Society that had 3 father and son presidents, E Kelliher Snr and his son Teddy, DP Kelliher Snr and his son David with C Mc Gillivray and his son Don.
The first Society in Victoria to have pure bred Charolias exhibited on the ground and the first Society to have 8 different beef breeds exhibited in one day.

Riding for the Disabled Shed Officially Opened At a recent Gala Night for Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA), parents, volunteers, and Baw Baw Shire Councillors celebrated the official opening of the upgraded RDA shed facilities.
“With repairs and upgrades to the toilets, shower, kitchen facilities, and footpaths, these now accessible facilities have greatly improved the amenity of the Logan Park RDA Shed in Warragul.”
Funded by Council’s 2015/16 Access Compliance Program, $184,000 project was completed ahead of time and within the budget.
The Mayor recalled his first site visit to the Logan Park facility several years ago, seeing first-hand the need for purpose-built toilets and a social meeting space for the RDA.
Baw Baw Shire Mayor Councillor Joe officially opened the new and improved facilities before a crowd of more than 80 attendees. “It is fantastic to see these improvements to the Riding for the Disabled shed, making the facility more user-friendly for everyone involved in the association,” said the Mayor.
“The Warragul RDA branch has been operating at Logan Park for over 25 years and prior to these upgrades, they had to share the amenities with the Leeson Pavilion that did not accommodate for all users,” the Mayor said. “There is a strong focus on developing abilities and enriching lives at RDA and the improved
amenities will ensure greater access while meeting the necessary disability compliance codes. The upgraded facilities will also be of great benefit to the cattle exhibitors at the annual Warragul Show. “The Warragul RDA makes a major contribution to the community by providing services to riders of all abilities and enabling riders to participate with independence, fun and companionship. “It is through the determination and cooperation of Council and the Warragul RDA volunteers that we now see riders of all abilities being able to fully enjoy these facilities. “I’m excited to see more of this cooperation and collaboration, and work more closely with such organisations and groups in our community over the next 12 months as Mayor.” Information sourced from Baw Baw Shire Website.

Australia's stocks in the Superbike World Championship have been given a massive boost with news that motorcycle ace Josh Brookes will line up in the 2016 instalment of the production-based series, starting at Victoria’s Phillip Island Grand Prix circuit from February 26-28.
The Sydneysider, a stunning winner of this year's British superbike title, will take to the world stage in 2016 with the same team (Shaun Muir Racing) and sponsorship (Milwaukee) that saw him dominate in the UK, but the hardware will be different as he switches from a Yamaha to the BMW Motorrad S 1000 RR — a bike he hasn't ridden before. Brookes' teammate will be the Czech Republic's former MotoGP rider, Karel Abraham. “I’m excited to be back in world superbike and to go there with the same team I won the British superbike title with is perfect, I haven’t raced a BMW before, but the bike and factory are proven and I am certain it will be competitive.

The Milwaukee team will test the BMW for the first time in January in Spain, before heading to Australia for the final pre-season test in mid-February and then its championship debut in front of a packed house of home-town fans at the island.
Brookes is certain he heads to world supers with the right squad, and believes with the bike and the support of BMW Motorrad Motorsport they’ll start the championship strong. “For me, the team component is extremely important. I have raced with Milwaukee for two years, we’ve won the BSB title together, and I know them, and they know me. “We have continuity and we share a very strong bond. They understand that I am an Australian, and like most Australians, I am a straight talker. I tell it like it is. “You know, I’ve always been there to get a job done. And sometimes you have to say it straight, get to work and get a bike sorted. Sometimes Aussie directness, can come across as aggressiveness, especially from people from differing cultures.
“Everyone’s ambition was to move forward, and it was the same for our team manager to our mechanics and crew to me. We all had the attitude, that we wanted to reach for the next challenge.
“With my team, I’m not going to have to spend a year getting to know people. We are on from day one and we all believe the BMW has not yet reached its potential so we’re ready for the challenge and some great racing in 2016.” Said Brookes.
“We looked at options from a number of manufacturers, but we felt for world superbikes BMW offered the best bike to cater for the current rules of world championship." Said Brookes who hails from Bringelly, and returned to Sydney yesterday after his winning year in the UK.
After winning three Australian road racing titles, including the superbike/supersport double in 2005, Brookes competed in the world superbike title in 2006 and a large chunk of 2007, before moving to world supersport until the end of 2008 where he took third in title chase.
The New South Welshman then joined the British superbike scene in 2009, finally converting a constant stream of top five finishes into championship success in 2015.
Brookes ruled the roost in the UK on the all-new Yamaha YZF-R1M, but with the Japanese manufacturer choosing to return to world superbike in 2016 with Sylvain Guintoli and Alex Lowes as its two pilots, Shaun Muir Racing instead switched allegiances to the potent S 1000 RR — which itself underwent a series of major upgrades just a year ago.
Milwaukee BMW is the second major team to announce that it'll be racing the S 1000 RR in 2016, with Althea Racing (Jordi Torres and Markus Reiterberger) also in the German corner against the might of Kawasaki (Jonathan Rea and Tom Sykes), Ducati (Chaz Davies and Davide Giugliano) and Honda (Nicky Hayden and Michael van der Mark).
During his local racing days, Brookes was a regular winner at Phillip Island, and the 4.45km grand prix circuit was also the scene of one of his most memorable victories as a wildcard in the 2004 world supersport round, where he just edged out countryman Kevin Curtain in a cliff-hanger finish. Brookes also won a second world supersport race at Donington in 2008.
The last Australian to win a world superbike race was Troy Bayliss in 2008, who signed off on his stellar career with a double victory in Portugal.

Bustling Bairnsdale
Your last stop before Metung and the seemingly endless expanse of the Gippsland Lakes is Bairnsdale, on the banks of the Mitchell River. Originally settled as an inland port, Bairnsdale is now a major gateway to Victoria's east, with everything you need and all the cafes and restaurants to sustain you for some time.
Life on the Lakes
With five main lakes, fed by the waters of four major rivers, and fringed by the Ninety Mile Beach, the Gippsland Lakes system is
the biggest expanse of inland waterways in the southern hemisphere, with over 400 square kilometres of lakes, rivers and lagoons that have made this region an ideal location for all forms of water based fun and sport, and exceptional fishing.
With that you're off to Metung, where the Great Alpine Road touring route ends. Life assumes a relaxed pace in Metung, a picturebook village on the shores of Bancroft Bay and Lake King.
Follow your nose to the harbourside restaurants to indulge in quality local seafood and wine, spend a day floating around in a boat, and stroll along the water's edge at sunset, cooking up August 2014 your next adventure.

Bok choy or pak choi is a type of Chinese cabbage. These varieties do not form heads; instead, they have smooth, dark green leaf blades forming a cluster reminiscent of mustard or celery. Varieties are popular in southern China and Southeast Asia. Being winter-hardy, they are increasingly grown in Northern Europe.
Kai-lan
Kai-lan (also written as gailan) is the Cantonese name for a vegetable that is also known as Chinese broccoli or Chinese kale. It is a leaf vegetable featuring thick, flat, glossy blue-green leaves with thick stems and a small number of tiny flower heads similar to those of broccoli. Its flavour is very similar to that of broccoli, but slightly more bitter.
Beansprout Bean sprouts are a common
ingredient, especially in Eastern Asian cuisine, made from sprouting beans. The typical bean sprout is made from the greenishcapped mung beans. Other common bean sprouts are the usually yellow, largergrained soy sprouts. It typically takes one week for them to be completely grown. The sprouted beans are more nutritious than the original beans and they require much less cooking time and, therefore, less fuel.

Summer Gardening Tips As we all know in the Aussie summer water conservation is important and your plants and garden can have a hard time of things. One way to look after your garden as well as make the most of your water usage is to add organic mulch to your soil. Mulch adds a pleasing visual aspect to your garden and has the added effect of
inhibiting weed growth and vastly improving moisture retention which is fantastic during particularly dry times.
Consider adding a wetting agent to your mulch and soil to further increase the ability to retain and evenly distribute moisture. During rainfall a wetting agent will also assist your garden in absorbing water
as opposed to it simply sitting on the surface and evaporating. If you are adding new grass to your garden or property consider using a robust type such as Zoysia grass or Queensland Blue Couch. Both of these grass types are easy to maintain and thrive very well in the Australian Summer heat and are fairly easy
Nancy’s Notes
to maintain requiring minimal maintenance and watering.
provided it is kept free of those moisture hungry weeds.
Another type you may consider would be Buffalo grass however this does require slightly more frequent mowing and more shade than the previously mentioned grass types.
If you are a vegetable gardener there are many varieties that will thrive and flourish during the hotter months. Beans, Sweet Potato and Corn will all grow extremely well in the heat.
In terms of lawn care, if you are under water restrictions or unable to mow regularly it’s best to keep the mowing height as high as possible.
Cabbage and Broccoli will also grow well provided they are receiving at least some shade. You can talk to your local nursery about water conservation, moisture retention methods and the best type of plants for your particular area and soil. Happy summer gardening!
This will protect the soil from drying out and allow for less need for watering.

Eve Contencin
Former Wellington Visitors Information Centre Volunteer & Swing Bridge Historian Eve Contencin has established herself as a full time author.
Author Eve has been writing and selfpublishing her own books since June 2012.
So far she has authored several Australian themed books, thus far including several titles not yet listed on Amazon, that are in the process of being edited and will soon be published.
Eve worked as a local volunteer for the Wellington Visitors Information Centre for a number of years while living in Sale, a bustling town in Gippsland. A lot of work she did through the Centre helped her gain knowledge about Tourism in the local Gippsland Region, and

In launching the books Eve said all her books are based on places around Australia. The Two books included ‘The Way of the Two Rivers and The Drover’s Sweetheart. The Way of the two rivers’ is based on a female swing bridge keeper in Sale.
thus sparked her interest and love for The Swing Bridge in Longford located South of Sale, which inspired her to start working on her very first historic novel The Way Of The Two Rivers, a story about Eliza's life as a Lady Swing Bridge Keeper. Eve grew up on a family farm during her early childhood on her parent’s property at Bellellen Victoria and her father raised Angus Beef cattle on the property. This livelihood of growing up on a farm and riding horses and helping her father with the cattle on the property, inspired her to write her first three books in The Drover Series called The Drover’s Sweetheart, The Drover’s Bride and her more recent edition on kindle in the drover series The Drover’s Daughter.
In June 2012 Eve was featured in The Ararat Advertiser on two occasions when she launched her first book The Way of the Two Rivers which is a historical novel based on fact and fiction about the Longford Swing Bridge near Sale and the lady bridge keeper at the Swing Bridge in the 1800s Eliza Flint Ball in Gippsland Victoria.

For many years of Eve’s Life she has now written a number of stories for adults and children. When she was young Eve grew up on a cattle farm with her parents and two younger sisters and spent a lot of time rearing baby calves and many other animals over the years of her early childhood as a cattle farmer’s daughter.

In the past Eve has spent many hours of horse riding with her youngest sister Linda on her parent’s farm or visiting local neighbours on horseback in the district of Bellellen Victoria where she grew up and lived with her parents until she left home to find her own path in life. books are now available and published on Kindle in eBooks for purchasing.
The Way of the Two Rivers Blurb: Eliza Flint (Ball) was the First ever Lady Bridge Keeper On board The Swing Bridge In Gippsland From 1891 to 1893 when it was very rare for a married woman to work, like Eliza in the workforce, in Gippsland and on the Swing Bridge.
“I was working at the swing bridge in Longford, and during that time I learnt about Eliza, the first lady bridge keeper in the 1800s,” she said. This book is based on the story of Eliza. Eve said during her time in Sale when she was working as a volunteer at the Wellington visitor’s information centre in Sale her eldest son Malcolm
was diagnosed leukaemia.

Through chemo treatment and then a stem cell donation from Malcolm’s brother Timothy and with family support from the Leukaemia Foundation, Eve said her eldest son Malcolm is now in remission. “When I wrote the books I wanted some of
the proceeds to go to the Leukaemia Foundation because they were so good to us”. Eve has always loved writing her own books and all of her books follow an Australian country theme. Eve Contencin along with her previous partner Stuart Riley have selfpublished her books in hardcover and all her

Why We Love Local There here is no denying that the internet makes it far easier to compare the price of shoping. But for local retailers Christmas sales can account for between a third and nearly two-thirds of a retailer's annual turnover. A bad Christmas can mark disaster for a small business. And there are plenty of reasons why it is worth going local for some of your gifts and groceries. Here are some reasons why. Your spending will boost the local economy Research on spending by local authorities shows that for every dollar spent with a small or mediumsized business about 60% stayed in the local economy, compared to 40% with a
larger business. Local streets populated with thriving independent businesses boost the prices of nearby homes, according to a recent study. The research by American Express found that house prices near a prosperous town centre have risen more over the past decade than other properties. It is the ethical choice Buying out-of-season produce, like strawberries in December, lowers your ecocredentials. As does eating turkey and carrots that have been flown halfway round the world or wrapped in layers of plastic. When you shop at local butchers, bakers, farm shops and green grocers, it is likely
that a decent percentage of the produce has had a short field-to-fork journey. Along with supporting local farmers, it means the food is likely to contain more nutrients and have less packaging. They sell quirky, one-off gifts Independent shops often stock items which are made locally and aren't available elsewhere. When it comes to gifts, quirky one-off items are a major plus of independent shops. Give your niece or nephew a handmade toy and at least it won't be identical to everything they already
have. You can help communities
build
Cafes and craft shops often drum up custom by hosting events, from craft clubs and children's events. If the businesses are not supported, the local groups tend to disappear too. Markets also often give space to community groups and social enterprises. Markets can have a community value, as there is often a social purpose to stalls – they can be public spaces as well as retail outlets. You might get a better deal or some good advice
Local bakers throw in extra bread rolls for regulars; and market stall holders are prepared to negotiate on prices. Independent retailers can use their discretion to reward regular customers, and it can mean you get discounts on the items you actually want to buy, rather than being tempted by multi-buy offers in the big chains. If you get to know your independent trader they should be able to recommend products to you. You can sometimes try before you buy Major retailers have the advantage of economies of scale and can afford to slash prices and offer reduced

costs. However, it's easy to waste money on products you end up not actually liking. You can hardly crack open a bottle of soft drink in a supermarket aisle and do a quick taste test, or check if an apple is crunchy by taking a big bite. Neither can you do this online. At independent retailers, however, it's easier to ask to sample a product. Many independent offlicences throw regular wine tasting events, while farm shops, bakeries and delis hand out tasters as a matter of course.

Noojee & District Historical Society proudly presents Christmas Movie Night at the Noojee Heritage Centre featuring The Polar Express starring Tom Hanks. Tom Hanks and director Robert Zemeckis reunite for “Polar Express,” an inspiring adventure based on the beloved children’s book by Chris Van Allsburg. When a doubting young boy takes an extraordinary train ride to the North Pole, he embarks on a journey of self-discovery that shows him that the wonder of life never fades for those who believe.
We’re not asking for much however we would love a gold coin donation upon entry to go to the local kindergarden who are after some much needed funds for the next few years.

Some handy Tips and tricks Tell a story If you look at the front page of most newspapers, you'll see a large colour image. This image tells a story. Often it's all there is to the story -- the image and its caption are the whole thing. So, how do they do it?
Subject Try to get subjects in the frame that relate to each other. Pick a subject, and take lots of photos of that subject. For example, try portraits. Shoot nothing but portraits for a week. Then try to analyse what's going on in your photos. You'll find that a portrait is stronger if it includes something to do with the person being photographed. Rule of thirds This "rule of thirds" is a useful tip to help you get started on composition. The image, divided into thirds both horizontally and vertically, will create a grid. Try to line the subject of your photo on this grid, especially where the lines would cross (many cameras have the option of showing this grid while shooting). You will find that when the
subjects of the photo are in the intersections or along the lines, the composition will be much more interesting than if you just cut it in half. Space Give your subject a bit of space around it. The guidelines here are: Allow the subject to look or move into an empty space. Try cropping a picture of a car traveling in two ways: one with the car moving into empty road, and another with the front of the car jammed against the frame and a lot of empty road behind it. Which do you prefer?
Crop really really tight. Instead of allowing a portrait to breathe, for example, just crop the photo so that only the eyes, nose and mouth are visible -- not even the hair or ears or chin. Which is the more effective photo? Watch for busy backgrounds Throw them out of focus or move your own point of view so that the background is no longer distracting. Do this in your camera via the aperture setting control. Choose a large aperture,
f2.8 for instance to blur the background. If you don't have such a wide setting on the lens, work with what you do have, eg: f3.5 or f4 etc. Longer focal length lenses such as a 70-200mm zoom works best for blurring backgrounds.
Leading the eye Lines in a picture should lead the eye into the picture. From there, the eye will follow the line of the bow up and out of the frame.
A more pleasing composition could have had the anchor chain leading toward the centre of the image rather than toward the left side. Placing a vertical line, such as a dock piling, on the left side of the image would stop the eye from wandering out of the frame. This same concept applies to when you begin to show multiple photos at a time. Arrange your photos so that they flow into each other.

Have A Happy Holiday The festive season is fast approaching once again.

that are entirely reliant on their parents for food.
Many of us I am sure are looking forward to enjoying a well earned break. Perhaps going to the beach, bush or “just away” for a while.
If possible have someone trustworthy and reliable come to visit your premises at least once a day to have a look-see that all is OK!
These parent birds in turn are reliant on a constant supply of food to be supplied to them for both themselves and their young.
With the excitement of the season building don’t forget your pets. They rely on us for their needs, we put in aviaries and cages for out enjoyment and it is our responsibility to ensure that they are taken care of. Have you put in place adequate arrangements for their care while you are away? If you intend being away even for a couple of days please ensure your birds and other
Going away for any longer than this, it is essential that someone absolutely reliable and with working knowledge of your pets essentially any birds, is lined up to take care of your aviaries or any pets, birds that you may have while you are gone. Keep in mind that for birds this time of year co-insides with the breeding season and you could well have young birds in nests
Pet birds housed indoors benefit from the presence of a radio playing quietly in the background for company which helps fill the void of the presence of their “flock”, namely you and your family. It is a good idea if whoever will be looking after your animals comes around several times in the weeks prior to you leaving. This will help them to be familiar with the feeding regime that you
employ in feeding and caring for your pets. It is also much less stressful for birds, especially pet birds, if they have a familiar face that they have seen before attending to their needs as opposed to a total stranger. Please ensure that may be required are also on hand. It is a good idea if you do
not already have some sort of security system installed to perhaps give consideration of doing so, or at the very last making sure that all your aviaries are padlocked. These additions really only act as a deterrent but even that is a bonus. If possible leave with the person responsible for the care of your pets with a contact phone
number for yourself or some other person that could be contacted if any problems arise.
With all these things in place. Have a happy holiday secure in the knowledge that your pets and birds are well provided for which ensures their holiday will be happy also.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all.

Preparing your house for sale on the market So the decision has been made. Whether upsizing or downsizing it’s time to sell your home. Even minor touches can go a long way to improving the look and value of your home. Here are some fantastic tips to ensure you achieve a great result when it comes time to sell your property.
Cleaning is of course one of the first steps. If you are not going to hire a professional house cleaning service, which is recommended, pay attention to the details. Clean windows will allow for more visible natural light. Dust ceiling fans and blades. Shine any metal surfaces and bathroom/kitchen appliances.
As a first suggestion have a friend or relative who is not familiar with your property take a walk-through as if they were making a purchase and ask for their honest feedback.
Ensure walls are freshly painted and in neutral colours which puts the focus back on the room itself as opposed to the colour schemes. Creams and whites are recommended.
You may be surprised at the little things that can be easily rectified that you wouldn’t have noticed otherwise.
Where possible remove clutter and personal items from the home. Having things
like shoes at the front door step, family photos, mail or utility bills around the house makes it appear as someone else’s home and you want potential buyers to feel like it could be their new home. Simplify things as much as possible. Basic and nonoversized furniture and a lack of ornaments and knickknacks create the impression that there is more space. Spare rooms should be presented as either a bedroom or office space, not both. Giving each room a definite purpose let’s anyone viewing the property imagine what they would be able to do in that room.
Storage space can be a huge selling point so ensure that cupboards or closets are either empty or very neatly organised so that the available space is obvious. If a little renovation is within your budget it makes a great difference to modernise kitchens and bathrooms. Things like modern taps, sinks and fixtures are very noticeable and can make the home seem far newer than it actually is. Just have a regular bathtub and bathroom? Make it look comfortable and inviting very cheaply with some stylishly folded wash cloths with
matching bathmat and towels. Add some scented candles and a simple plant for great effect. How is your water pressure? Savvy home buyers will often check this to ensure they will be able to enjoy a decent shower each day, replace your showerheads accordingly. As with the inside of the home pay great attention to how the house looks from the street.
If not employing professional gardeners take care that gardens are carefully weeded and if needed introduce new plants for colour particularly around the entrance to the home.
Repaint any outside walls that are painted. Trim any bushes or shrubs obscuring the view.
Finally take a walkthrough yourself. Was there anything in your way? Make sure potential buyers can move through the property from front to back without obstructions as this will add to the impression of size, comfort and available space.

Electrical safety tips for home and business Avoid the hazards of faulty installation, improper grounding, incorrect operation and poor maintenance of electrical equipment with these key tips. Electrical safety in the home Look after appliance cords. Keep electrical appliances, their cords and any extension leads away from water. Ensure cords are in good condition – if they’re worn or frayed, don’t use the appliance until it’s been repaired by a licensed electrician. If you decide to throw away the appliance, make sure it can’t be used by someone else. Only ever disconnect an appliance at the outlet by pulling the plug, not the cord.
This extends the life of your appliance.
minor the job.
Avoid piggy-back or ‘double adaptor’ connections Overloading can occur if too many cords are connected to outlets designed for only one or two plugs.
Install safety switches Have safety switches installed at your meter box. As a general rule, electrical equipment should only be used when connected to a safety switch.
Use power boards with in-built safety devices to avoid a power outlet overload.
Test safety switches Testing every three months is a good rule of thumb.
Childproof your outlets Use childproof plugs in electrical outlets to deter children from poking small items into them.
To do this you just need to press the ‘test’ or ‘T’ button. If the switch turns off the power, then it’s working correctly.
Get a licensed electrician to do your wiring Call a licensed electrician if you need electrical wiring or repairs, no matter how
Keep in mind though that the use of safety switches doesn’t mean you can be less careful when using electricity – they are no substitute for proper electrical maintenance and safe
practices. Look out for overhead lines Avoid coming into contact with overhead lines. If you’re working near them, always keep a safe distance – at least 6.4 metres for wires on poles and 10 metres for wires on towers. Keep this in mind when installing antennas, picking fruit or pruning trees, and using a ladder or a metal tape measure. Look out for underground power lines Know the location of any underground power lines before digging at your property. Call the Dial Before You Dig national referral service on 1100 . Look out for water leaks
Water is a good conductor of electricity. If water leaks into the light or power circuits in your home, a fault may develop, which could result in a fire or someone experiencing electric shock. As soon as you notice a water leak, have it repaired by a licensed plumber. In the event of electric shock If you feel a tingle when you touch a water fitting, the grounding of your electrical installation could be faulty. If it’s safe to do so, shut off the power at the main switch (usually found in the meter box) and call a licensed electrician to investigate.
39
If you go to help someone who’s receiving an electric shock, turn off the power at the main switch first.
If the current can't be turned off, use a nonconducting object, such as a broom, chair, rug or rubber doormat to push the person away from the source of the current. If possible, stand on something dry that doesn't conduct electricity, such as a rubber mat or folded newspapers.
Use only trusted and Certified Electricians Electrical work should only even be performed and installed by Certified Electricians in your home and office.

Antiques & Man Cave Trail
Setting Up The Perfect Man Cave So it’s that time. You’ve decided you need a man cave at home. So what does it need? Depending on your tastes, or unique lack thereof, there is a lot you can do to make it completely your own space. While anyone can install a bar or a pool table for the ever trusty boys nights, recently it’s become quite popular to look to antique shops to fill those niche interests that so many of us have. Old automobile memorabilia is great for that
rustic look and can showcase both your interests and some fascinating artefacts of Australian motoring history. If sports is more your thing keep an eye out for old football cards and posters and there is nothing like a well displayed but also well loved cricket bat to remind you of those early days in the backyard. For the more technology minded blokes among us, things like retro electronics, old computer or TV parts and 70’s and 80’s video game machines can add that touch of nostalgia to your space.
