185 Franklin Street Traralgon VIC 3844 www.gippslander.com.au Assemble the String It Hoop 1. Remove inner ring from embroidery hoop. Lay fabric right side up over the inner ring, positioning the portion of fabric you wish to frame. Put embroidery hoop back together, pushing fabric between the pieces to hold it in place. Tighten the screw and adjust fabric tension as needed. 2. Lay grosgrain ribbon in a zigzag pattern across the framed fabric; place a pin where ribbon changes direction at each end. Trim ribbon ends if necessary. 3. Secure ribbon to the fabric with a few small stitches using doubled sewing thread and a sewing needle; remove pins.

Materials

· 10”-diameter wooden Embroidery hoop · Fat quarter (18x22”) of fabric · 45” length of 1/8”- wide grosgrain ribbon · Sewing needle · Sewing thread to match ribbon · Tacky glue · 2”-tall wooden clothespins

4. Turn embroidery hoop over and trim fabric close to the embroidery hoop edges. 5. Run a thin line of tacky glue along the inner ring back edge, and press fabric edges into glue to prevent fraying; let dry. 6. Pin clothespins to ribbon. Longford Shared Path Open For Use Wellington Shire Council has announced that the final stage of the shared path which links Longford to Sale is now completed, open to the public and ready for use. All residents can now walk or bike the entire length of the path beginning from Longford Public Hall all the way to the Port of Sale, which is approximately 7 kilometres in distance. As well as offering Longford residents a new way to travel into town, the Longford Shared Pathway also

incorporates the Swing Bridge, wetlands and Thomson River in its trail meaning there is plenty to see and makes it a great tourist attraction. The path is one of the many existing and planned shared pathway networks throughout

Wellington shire and is a great addition to the area. Costing the Council $190,000, the final section links Longford to the pre-existing constructed path alongside the South Gippsland Highway. Content and photo sourced from www.wellington.vic.gov.au

If you have horses and need to keep them cool and comfortable during the hot days there are several things you can do to minimise stress and prevent health issues for your animal. Horses that are heat stressed may show signs of reduced feed intake and excessive sweating, so monitoring food and the horses appearance are simple things that you can keep an eye on. Electrolytes can be added to their feed to replace any essential salts that can be depleted due to sweating

and any exercise should be left to early morning and late evening. Heat stressed horses can be hosed with cool water, it’s best to start from the feet

and move up slowly. Sponge down any excess water with towels if there is a little breeze as the water will heat up again in the horses coat quite quickly.

The Long Road to Recovery for the Long Jetty Port Welshpool

The federal government in December 2015 denied an application from the South Gippsland Shire Council for a grant of an additional 4.7 million dollars to assist with the restoration of the Long Jetty at Port Welshpool. At the time of the application there was a potential 6 million dollars already committed by the Council and the State Government.

In July 2015 Gippsland Ports had estimated the cost of the restoration project at $10.6 million. South Gippsland Shire Councillors Jeanette Harding and Mohya Davies called a meeting in January this year to gauge support for the jetty in the wake of

Gippsland Ports recently announced that an updated condition assessment will need to be undertaken in the coming months due to the rapid deterioration of the jetty. This assessment to be undertaken by mid-March and it’s possible that it will result in an increase to the overall project cost.

There are a few things you and your children can do to ensure they arrive safely at school and safely home. The basic premise is the Stop, Look, Listen and Think procedure which schools and crossing attendants will often present and reiterate to students throughout the school year.

THINK about whether it is safe to cross the road – when the road is clear or all traffic has stopped.

STOP one step back from the kerb or shoulder of the

are little and cannot be seen easily by drivers, can not immediately tell where sounds are coming from, may not take any notice of what is going on outside their immediate field of vision, cannot reliably judge the speed of vehicles, can be unpredictable and do not understand traffic laws.

Applications open for the 2016 Business Excellence Awards Applications are now open for the 2016 Baw Baw Shire Business Excellence Awards. This is the ninth year the awards will be held to celebrate local business excellence, innovation, development and success. Baw Baw Shire Mayor Councillor Joe Gauci said the business awards highlight the contributions our local businesses make to

the lifestyle and economy of the Shire. “The awards are a great opportunity for Council and the community to show our appreciation and acknowledge the achievements of businesses in our region,” said the Mayor. In this year’s awards, retail businesses can nominate themselves in the new People’s Choice award category, which is decided by public vote. Nominated

businesses can encourage their customers to vote for them. “We’re very proud to welcome Best Match Recruitment as the major sponsor again this year and Southern Cross Austereo as our major media partner for the first time.” “All businesses are urged to submit an application for the awards so they can receive the recognition they deserve,” said the Mayor. The awards are open to all businesses currently based

in Baw Baw Shire, other than co-operatives, government supported businesses and agencies.

Spotlight (Out Feb 3rd) Based on a true story, a team of reporters for Boston Globe uncover a massive scandal of child-molestation and the resulting systematic cover-up within numerous Catholic Archdiocese throughout the city and surrounding areas. While this compelling drama tackles a very sensitive issue with multiple twists and turns, the film’s most endearing quality is how it celebrates the heroes of investigative reporting. I left the film with a feeling of immense admiration for the characters I spent just over two hours watching. Starring: Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams, Mark Ruffalo Rating: M (Mature themes and coarse language)

Brooklyn (Out Feb 11th) Nominated for Best Picture at this year’s Oscars, ‘Brooklyn’ tells the story of an Irish immigrant’s who arrives in Brooklyn during her 1950s where she falls into a new romance, however her past soon begins to catch up with here. To me this sounds like a fairly typical love story, but clearly there is something particular special about this period piece. As I’m yet to see it I can only make a few assumptions, but I think what will impress audiences the most will be the acting and historical authenticity. Starring: Saoirse Ronan, Emory Cohen and Domhnall Gleeson Rating: TBA

Hail, Caesar! (Out Feb 25th) Set in Hollywood’s golden ear, a film industry “fixer’ works to keep a studio’s star in line while trying to discover what happened to a lead cast member who disappeared while filming a new picture. As a long-time fan of the Coen brothers, I’m looking forward to this one a lot. Judging by the trailer, many of their classic filmmaking traits are present, most notably the fine mix of comedy and drama. Starring: George Cloonery, Scarlett Johansson, Josh Brolin and Ralph Fiennes Rating: TBA

Vision Protection For A Happy Future Early prevention is possibly the best defense people have against developing eyesight problems or conditions. Catching and treating any problems early can go a long way to reducing later treatment or loss of vision. Conditions such as glaucoma, macula degeneration and diabetic retinopathy can be managed as best as possible however early detection is the best way that these conditions can be treated effectively. There are also simple things you can do to minimise the risk of having later issues. Eye strain can be a common cause of minor problems. To prevent eye strain, if you are using a computer, phone or tablet, playing video games or doing a concentrated activity such as reading, knitting or sewing you should rest your eyes for 5 minutes out of every hour. When driving long distances alternate your focus between nearer and further objects periodically. Changing this focus periodically relaxes the eye muscles somewhat and helps to further prevent eye strain. Wearing appropriate protection is also essential to prevent injury or damage

to your vision. Ensure that if you are working with bright lights, firearms, fireworks or explosives that your eyes are always protected correctly. This also applies to sports such as squash and paintball and many other working situations such as hammering, cutting, sawing and drilling. Many medications can also have side effects for your vision and it should

be discussed with your doctor and eye specialist. It is generally suggested that those under 50 years of age attend an eye exam every two years and those over 50 should have a check up at least annually. This is even more essential and should be attended to more frequently if there is a history of vision problems in the family, you are a smoker or if your diet is lacking in nutrients and vitamins for any reason.

Marlo is a small town located where the mouth of the Snowy River meets the Southern Ocean and features wetlands, rainforest, sand dunes and backwaters. First settled in 1875 with the Marlo Hotel opening in 1886, Marlo was officially declared a township by the Governor-in-Council on the 18th of February 1889.

The Marlo Hotel was until 1942 considered to be the general store, accommodation house and the unofficial post office

with locals taking turns in bringing the mail from Orbost or Cunningham. Now somewhat a seaside resort Marlo offers a number of holiday houses and caravan parks for guests and the estuary is very popular for fishing with bream, yellow-eyed mullet and trevally in abundance. The coastal road at Marlo runs east to Cape Conran.

Along this route are fantastic lookouts over the Snowy River mouth and the ocean coastline. Cape Conran is a beautiful park, with 11,700 hectares of bush, banksia forest, beaches and freshwater lakes. The cape has a campsite in the banksia forest, with wooden cabins just 20 minutes from the Marlo township.

Cape Conran Coastal Park is located in Eastern Victoria, (Far East Gippsland) 396 km from Melbourne. The park consists of 11,700 hectares of coastal wilderness. It fronts onto 60 kilometers of isolated sandy beaches facing south over rugged Bass Strait. The park also has heath lands, Rainforest and Banksia Woodlands brimming with nectar-feeding birds. Each year the park plays host to campers and nature lovers from around Australia and the world. Whether it be fishing, surfing, nature walks or just lazing around and catching up on your reading the park has something for everyone, with an amazing array of unique accommodation options.

Gippsland Farming

Simple solar solutions for Gippsland farmers Electricity can be one of the biggest costs facing farmers today, but there certainly are alternatives. Solar pumps can be a great way to start offsetting those large energy bills or provide a fantastic solution to more remote locations where providing mains power proves to be difficult or costly. Coupled with power storage solutions solar pumps can even be operated during the night and in lower light conditions. The solar panels convert light efficiently, can withstand tough weather conditions and require very little maintenance. Solar pumps are excellent for use with bores, domestic residences, irrigation and water transfers, for instance moving water from a dam to a storage tank or for stock watering down in a paddock.

When combined with things like solar electric fences and solar generators you will see a significant reduction in electricity billing.

Solar powered electric fence energizers enable you to have a completely self contained electric fence situated wherever you need it and are lightweight and extremely simple to set up or relocate. With different sized energizers available for various farm applications, you are bound to find the perfect personalised solution. Our range of solar powered electric fence energizers are Compact, lightweight & simple to set up, your fence will be continually energized and worry free! For urgent power blackout situations, remote locations, when you are simply on the move, camping or out on your boat, solar generators can be extremely useful.

There are models complete with power inverters, sealed battery banks and charge controllers capable of providing both AC, DC and even USB power outlets for charging phones and other mobile devices. Using wind, water or solar solutions is becoming increasingly popular for local farms and businesses. By installing solar powered water pumps and other solar options, you will not only reduce your expenses but also reduce your carbon footprint significantly, which has a positive effect for the environment. Did you know?

For over 100 years, from the 1840s to the 1950s, the Australian economy was seen to be ‘riding on the sheep’s back’. Agriculture, especially wool, established Australia as a thriving economy with a substantial workforce, service industries and large port cites. Australian agriculture benefitted from many different agricultural practices, formal and informal land grants, overseas capital and access to relatively cheap labour

through Indigenous workers and indentured schemes.

Combined with invention, ingenuity and hard work this has led to Australia becoming a leading exporter of fine food, meats and grains. There have been many changes in farming methods over the last 200 years and Australian farmers have had to be adaptable as well as resilient and inventive. The challenges of access to fresh water, the legacy of high amounts of fertilisers,

massive clearing, over grazing, a tyranny of distance, transport costs and feral animals, have tested Australian farmers to their limits. In response, farming has become more mechanised and reliant on technologies, as well as holistic as it seeks to become more sustainable. Unique Characters of Gippsland

Unique Characters of Gippsland Presents Ken Roberts Growing up in a country town has had a lasting effect on Ken Roberts from Maffra. Despite travelling extensively around the world he has always welcomed heading back home to Maffra. In the past Ken has documented the Gippsland people and places prolifically with his paintings and has exhibited across Gippsland and in Melbourne. He began writing stories about life growing up in Maffra and this grew into a book, “Country Town Quilt” which was launched in November 2015. The book contains an amazing array of characters and events that combine to tell a story of life in a country town and surrounds. Easy to read and absorbing, the book has been warmly received by the people of the local area.

Noreen today - Survivor of the tragic 1943 accident.

Another event that Ken’s mum talked about, usually when they were at Seaspray on summer holidays was a tragic accident that occurred in 1943. A R.A.A.F plane, unintentionally dragging a cable along behind it, sliced off the feet of a young girl attending a sports fair on boxing day at the beach. Ken had always wondered if it was true and fate eventually lead him to that young girl, now in her eighties. Her story of the accident and her survival is remarkable. Ken realized that so much of local history and commonplace stories were

The book was launched by Senator Ricky Muir before several hundred people who enjoyed an old style community get together, complete with old fashioned afternoon tea.

Ken’s book is full of wonderful local characters and stories that combine to give a glimpse of what life was like growing up in a typical Australian country town.

Ken says he is surprised at the level of interest in the book and the amount of goodwill it has generated.

He relates his forgotten love of the funny old blue rattler train that, in its day, was a vital link and the lifeblood of the town.

“I had no idea when I started writing these stories that so many people would connect with them as they have!” He says.

It was a bumpy ride on the old rail car that sped along the spur line from Maffra to Traralgon where it connected to the main line to Melbourne.

being lost and by speaking to people who experienced everyday life from different eras he could preserve the social history of the times.

So many of the stories in Ken’s book tell of the everyday triumphs and tragedies of life in an ordinary country town.

The book can be purchased in Maffra at Gippsland Real Estate, in Sale at On Trac Mortgage Brokers or at Rust Emporium in Briagolong.

He relates his wonder as a child of being transfixed when shopping with his Mum at the local department store in Maffra.

People have read the book who know nothing of the town of Maffra but they connect with the way of life that they portray.

Cost is $20. Books can be posted anywhere within Australia for $25.00.

They operated an amazing pulley system where the money and dockets from sales on the shop floor where whisked up to a central cashier high up in an office.

Ken says he stumbled upon writing these stories unintentionally and has become an accidental recorder of history past and present.

He realized whilst writing the book that if some stories weren’t recorded they would be lost and the book was a way of preserving social history of the town and region. He found that by reading the stories it triggered many more conversations and memories of people. It has become a great talking point for locals.

She would note that sale and send the receipt and change zinging down the cable to the customer and sales clerk below! It was the ultimate cashless shop floor. He dreamed of being able to pull the cord that sent the wooden capsule hurtling skywards. Ken interviewed the cashier who worked there when he was a boy and found out how the whole system worked. She said it was a great baby sitter as kids would stand for ages watching the bulbs flying around the shop. There are so many unique individuals and stories in the

So many people have memories of seeing people off from the old weather board country station or waiting expectantly for the train headlight to appear down the line from Tinamba. Ken grew up with an amazing story that his Mother always told of a couple who were in such a rush to get off the train, that when the train stopped at the

town that Ken uncovered and relates in the book, it’s like a written time capsule that will forever capture some of these and preserve them. He tells of the Polish migrant Mr Kowal who lived in the next street who worked his day job as a linesman for the PMG (Telstra) and then after work repaired and made shoes in his shed until late at night. He became the town cobbler and could repair anything and could handcraft shoes in the traditional fashion that he learned in Poland. Ken spoke to his son John about how valued his father

There was no record of this when he began researching to see if it was true and he had to rely on the town grapevine for information. A few phone calls later around the town and somebody had the details that the guard had written down of that fateful night. He could then piece together and verify that

was to the town in a time when nothing was thrown away and shoes when worn were repaired and resoled to make them last. John told how when his father was getting older and losing interest he asked him to make a pair of shoes for him. The master artisan that he was he crafted a beautiful pair of men’s shoes. John brought the shoes out and showed them off, they were exquisite. “I only wore them once” John said, “That was to Dad’s funeral.”

Is your air conditioning system hurting your back pocket over summer? Your old or aging air conditioner is still cooling your home but is it costing you more money than it should?

certainly assist with the life of your system and improve energy efficiency so it is worth your while having it done.

Air conditioners can continue to cool your home or business but over time can become inefficient without you realising, adding unnecessary expense to your energy bills.

Eventually normal wear and tear will affect its performance and the system has to use more and more energy to function correctly.

Regular maintenance by qualified technicians can

So when is it time to upgrade? If your air conditioning system is past it’s warranty

period it’s very likely that it’s time for a full service, electrical safety check or an upgrade.

Recent advances in technology have made newer air conditioning units far more cost effective and energy efficient to operate over the summer, saving you up to 30% of your energy costs which is certainly nothing to sneeze at in this day and age. We can all agree it’s a great to keep cool over the summer months, but it’s

15

even better when it’s cost effective too.

Other ways to ensure that your air conditioner is running as efficiently as possible are: 1. Ensure all windows and unused rooms are shut, the only exception being with evaporative cooling. 2. Check the difference between the indoor and outdoor temperatures – Whatever the temperature is outside, don’t cool down the room’s temperature to less

than 8°C below it. 3. Don’t set your thermostat at a colder temperature than normal – Your home will not cool down any faster and can result in over-cooling. 4. If your air conditioner has it, use the economy mode – This will reduce energy usage by maintaining moderate temperatures in the right conditions. 5. Use portable or ceiling fans – These can be used together with your air conditioner to spread the air faster and more efficiently

throughout your home. 6. Turn it off when the temperature outside drops. 7. Only use it when needed – Your air conditioner should only run when you’re using the room. 8. Shade the window from outside – Use an awning, shutters, blinds, drapes or tinting to reduce the amount of sunlight entering the room in summer. February's Gardening Calendar trays and then planted out in the next 4 to 6 weeks. Taking care of your gardens in February requires a little work due to the drier conditions and heat. To conserve moisture, mulch your garden beds. For this it’s best to use organic materials, for example lucerne hay, manure or mushroom compost. Heavy summer rains and storms can wash away your mulch which is something to be aware of and attend to

when required. February is a month whereby plants can really be affected by disease. Even if your plants are well watered and your water is definitely getting to the soil, insects and bugs are extremely active over the summer months and February can easily become a month where they just take over. Carefully check your plants and if you find leaves or flowers with disease on them make sure to cut them off straight away and throw

If you’ve come across any fruit falling off your trees before it’s ripened, it can be due to lack of water. Fruit trees need a lot of water over late summer so it’s best to water them in the early morning every three to four days.

What type of bird?? Canary, Budgie, Medium Sized Parrot (Cockatiel. Conure, Princess Parrot, Moustache, Plum Head, Princess, Indian Ringneck, Quaker, Lorikeet) Larger Birds (Eclectus, Galah, Sulphur Crested Cockatoo, Corella) 1. Time Factor How much time do you have available to spend with the bird and prepare food appropriate to it’s needs? Canaries do not require human socialisation and therefore are quite suited to busy lifestyle households. Budgies are reasonably content with minimal human interaction and if provided with mirrors and toys can entertain themselves quite adequately without the need for lots of socialisation, although time spent with them is quite definitely quality time. Most medium sized parrots,

The larger birds (Eclectus and the Cockatoos), are extremely intelligent birds and as such require lots and lots of constant quality human attention and human interaction coupled with lots of exercise if they are to remain happy and healthy thus avoiding the potential to develop extreme behavioural habits such as feather plucking or screeching. 2. Dietary needs Canaries, Budgies, Cockatiels and most medium sized birds require a good quality seed mix to be provided with the addition of seeding grasses and a variety of green foods such as milk thistle, silver beet, endive, or chickweed a small amount of which should be provided fresh daily. have a high requirement for a variety of fruits and vegetables to be added to the above diet that has been outlined as suitable for the other medium sized birds this should be provided freshly prepared daily. All the cockatoo like birds also benefit greatly from a similar diet to this being provided. Then we come to Eclectus. Before even considering purchasing this species for an aviary inmate or a pet bird be very aware that it is essential that their diet needs to be attended to very closely with lots of vitamin A rich foods provided at all times. A chop mix comprising of some of these foods is a must for these birds, cantaloupe, sweet potato, silver beet, endive, apple, pear, cucumber, grapes, carrots, broccoli, dandelion greens and the occasional hard boiled egg. If your schedule would not allow for time to prepare and provide a diet similar to this for these birds do not consider purchasing them. A good quality seed mix should also be on the

Lorikeets DO NOT eat seed. They are sector eaters and should be fed accordingly. They are fed dry powder especially formulated to their needs plus a wet mix that must be made up daily. In addition to this they can be fed fruits such as apples, pears, oranges and stone fruits when in season, flowering gum blossoms, grevillia and bottlebrush flowers from which they extract the nectar. This is a welcome and necessary addition to their diet.

Birds such as canaries, budgerigars, green cheeked conures and plum head parrots are quiet birds that are suited to situations where near neighbours need to be considered. Cockatiels, Princess Parrots, Quakers, Moustache etc. are moderately noisy and then we come to the Cockatoo family which are generally very noisy at times and this factor must be taken in consideration as does the purchase of an Eclectus for the same reason.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN PURCHASING YOUR BIRD

Observe the bird quietly from a distance. It should be bright and alert. Avoid fluffed up or sleepy looking birds especially if they are resting with their head tucked over their shoulder with both feet on the perch. A well bird when resting roosts on one foot only.

Feathering should appear sleek and even with no bald patches. Young birds may have frayed tail feathers, but they should be evenly shaped with no evidence of blood in the shafts.

Eyes should be bright and clear with no swelling, reddening or discharge present.

Nostrils should appear clean with no discharge, reddening or blockages. They should appear to be equal in size and shape.

Beak. This should be even in shape with no flaking, chips or cracks. Cockatoos (sulphur crested) have a black beak but this should have a greyish/white powdery appearance. Never buy a cockatoo that has a

Feet should be able to firmly grip the perch or your finger. Check that they do not appear swollen or flaky looking as this can be an early indicator of a health problem. Breathing should be regular and even while the bird is sitting relaxed on the perch. There should be no evidence of “tail bobbing” or open mouthed breathing. Keel bone. Is It Real Or Fake You’ve just found that perfect antique that you’ve been shopping for. So what is the likelihood that it could be a fake or modern reproduction and how would you be able to tell? There can actually be a high level of skill, cost and effort required to create a “new” fake antique which means that while they do exist, it’s not something you will necessarily come across very often. More likely would be reproductions or replicas. If these are new they are very easy to spot as they will be showing little signs of age or wear and tear.

An easy way to try and determine the purported age of an object is to simply compare it to some similar objects from the same era, determining the types of wood or materials used, the types of joints and fasteners used and if they were actually being used in that period. For instance oak was used extensively for furniture during the 1700’s and then again during a resurgence in the early 1900’s. Irregular saw marks can indicate pre-1830’s hand cut woods whereas after this time sawmills were more likely to cut the wood,

leaving straight and even marks. Are there any other tool markings or indications of machining or modern mass production? For example hand sanded woods are far more coarse and uneven than machine sanded woods which of course adds to their character. At the end of the day it’s also prudent to consider that any respectable antique dealers would not be likely to be knowingly dealing in fake items as the damage to their reputation and trust from clients would be beyond repair.
