Es el preludio de las fiestas en honor a la Virgen Blanca que comienzan días más tarde, el 4 de agosto.
Vitorianos y vitorianas se acercan a la Cuesta de San Francisco para la tradicional compra de los ajos y las cuadrillas de blusas y neskas realizan el primer paseíllo a los toros del año.

El 4 de agosto comienzan las fiestas con el repique de las campanas de San Miguel y el tradicional “chupinazo” a las seis de la tarde. La bajada del Celedón desde el campanario de San Miguel hasta un balcón de la Plaza de la Virgen Blanca da comienzo a la fiesta con el bullicio de miles de personas que se congregan en dicha plaza.
On July 25, coinciding with the Feast of St. James, Vitoria-Gasteiz celebrates the “Día del Blusa y de la Neska”, when groups of young men and women in traditional dress invade the streets. It is the prelude to the festival in honour of the city’s patron saint, Virgen Blanca, celebrated on August 4.
Hay que resaltar dos actos de gran tradición: la Procesión de los Faroles, un espectáculo de luz y cristal que la noche del 4 de agosto recorre las calles de Vitoria-Gasteiz y la ofrenda floral a la Virgen Blanca el día 5, donde las cuadrillas de Blusas y Neskas depositan flores ante la hornacina de la Patrona de la capital.

FesTVal, the Vitoria-Gasteiz Television Festival, is the first of its kind in Spain. The first edition of the festival, the only one dedicated exclusively to television and radio, was held on September 1, 2009. September 18, RIOJA ALAVESA WINE HARVEST FESTIVAL in Samaniego The first Rioja Alavesa Wine Harvest Festival was held in Laguardia in 1994 and is celebrated in a different town each year. This year the 23rd festival will be held in Samaniego on September 18. The aim of the event is for visitors to get to know the different towns in the region and see their way of life, with wine featuring as the mainstay of the area’s rural development. Every year, once the grapes have been crushed and the unfermented grape-juice has been sampled, the wine-tasting of the Rioja Alavesa wine begins in earnest. This year wine producers from all over Rioja Alavesa will have stands in Samaniego.

PLAYAS DE INTERIOR EN VERDE Y CON BANDERA AZUL Las playas de Garaio, Landa y Sorgimendi ofrecen al visitante la posibilidad de disfrutar del mar interior de Álava. Rutas de senderismo, recorridos en bicicleta, práctica de deportes náuticos o paisajes de gran belleza completan una oferta turística especial y polivalente. Landa y Garaio en el Embalse de UllibarriGamboa, playas con bandera azul El Embalse de Ullibarri se construyó en los años 50 para abastecer de electricidad y agua potable a Vitoria-Gasteiz. Ubicado
en el municipio alavés de Arrazua-Ubarrundia, el entorno del embalse permite al visitante disfrutar de dos magníficas playas interiores reconocidas con la bandera azul por la calidad de su entorno y los servicios que ofrecen. Son las playas de Landa y Garaio situadas en los Parques Provinciales del mismo nombre.

Who says there are no beaches in Alava?
GREEN INLAND BEACHES WITH BLUE-FLAG STATUS Garaio, Landa and Sorgimendi beaches are ideal spots for enjoying Alava’s inland sea. Other tourist attractions in the area for summer 2016 include hiking, cycling, water sports and breathtaking scenery. The blue flag beaches of Landa and Garaio, at the UllibarriGamboa reservoir The Ullibarri reservoir was built in the area known as Arrazua-Ubarrundia (Alava) in the 50s, to supply Vitoria-Gasteiz with
electricity and drinking water. There are two excellent beaches on the edge of the reservoir, where visitors can enjoy the facilities and natural surroundings that warranted them a blue flag. The beaches are located in the Provincial Parks of Landa and Garaio.
Landa Provincial Park Located near the village of Landa, on the northwest shore of the Ullibarri-Gamboa reservoir, the park covers an area of 40 hectares next to the reservoir. A range of facilities are available in the park and an extensive beach area has been developed

Su ubicación, la buena accesibilidad tanto en coche como en bicicleta o transporte público, el nivel de infraestructuras de uso público y las características del lugar lo convierten en un enclave ideal para disfrutar del tiempo de ocio en contacto con la naturaleza y al aire libre. Landa es un buen punto de partida para realizar excursiones por la zona tanto a pie como en bicicleta. Por sus inmediaciones pasan: GR-38, Ruta del Vino y el Pescado; GR-25, Vuelta a la Llanada; Itinerario Verde del Vasco Navarro del Puerto de Arlaban; Itinerario Verde del embalse de Ullíbarri.
Parque Provincial de Garaio El Parque de Garaio está situado en los aledaños del antiguo pueblo del que toma el nombre, a orillas del embalse de Ullíbarri-Gamboa. Este Parque forma una pequeña península de 116 hectáreas que se adentra en el embalse a la altura de la desembocadura del río Zadorra.
Garaio. Además, existen diversas rutas habilitadas para recorrer en bici. En la Oficina de Información existe un punto de disposición pública de bicicletas.

Garaio Park is located on the edge of the Ullíbarri-Gamboa reservoir, on the outskirts of the old village that gave it its name. The park occupies a small peninsula of 116 hectares which juts out into the reservoir at the mouth of the Zadorra River.
On the edge of the Urrunaga reservoir, Sorgimendi Beach has all the necessary recreational facilities for a good day out in the fresh air. And after a swim, what better way to end the day than visit the local parish church of St. John the Baptist, in nearby Urrunaga.

As several of the area’s walking trails and cycling paths pass through Landa, it is also a good location for setting off on a hike or cycle: the GR-38 Wine and Fish Route, the GR-25 Alava Plains Loop, the Vasco Navarro Green Route to the Arlaban Mountain pass, the Ullíbarri Reservoir Green Route.
There are lots of activities for visitors to do in Garaio: walking, cycling, photography, guided tours, workshops, kite-flying, swimming, discovering the park’s flora and fauna, and more besides. Bicycles are available for hire at the Information Office.

Una visita imprescindible para conocer el Románico en Álava El Centro de Interpretación del Románico Alavés explica el origen de este estilo arquitectónico en Álava, así como su presencia en el territorio, en una exposición permanente ubicada en el Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Estíbaliz.

rofusión de imágenes y textos, maquetas, facsímiles y otros elementos expositivos, acompañados de programas audiovisuales e interactivos, muestran al visitante la realidad del románico en Álava. “El Románico”, “El Románico en Álava”, “Geografía del Románico en Álava” y “El Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Estíbaliz” completan en cuatro espacios expositivos la información en torno al origen, características y ubicación de los principales elementos románicos que presenta el territorio. Un total de 240 edificios que conservan elementos románicos distribuidos sobre todo por las tierras del norte y del sur, jalonan numerosos lugares de la provincia de Álava.
Ubicación: Junto al Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Estíbaliz, en el interior del Centro de Acogida. Visitas: Abierto los domingos, de 11 a 14 horas, con entrada libre. Los grupos pueden gestionar las visitas en estibalizkoama@euskalnet.net
Alaiza y Gaceo, iglesias románicas con pinturas góticas Cerca de la capital, Vitoria-Gasteiz, en la pequeña localidad de Gaceo, el visitante puede acercarse a la Iglesia de San Martín de Tours. El templo esconde en su interior unas pinturas medievales que fueron descubiertas en 1967 al retirar el
retablo mayor y que, según los expertos, fueron realizadas en el siglo XIV para transmitir a la población analfabeta hechos religiosos. El mural de la Iglesia de Santa María de la Asunción, en Alaiza, es diferente. Las pinturas son menos elaboradas, pero más sorprendentes. Recrean escenas bélicas cuyo sentido es objeto todavía de estudio, si bien pudieran representar algún momento de los numerosos enfrentamientos bélicos que la comarca vivió en el siglo XIV. A key visit to understanding Alava’s Romanesque Architecture The Interpretation Centre of Romanesque Architecture in Alava, located at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Estibaliz, houses a permanent exhibition where visitors can learn about the history of Romanesque architecture in Alava and see some examples in the province.
T
he centre contains numerous photographs and models, documents and facsimiles as well as video and interactive programmes which help to explain Romanesque architecture in Alava. The centre is divided into four sections, “Romanesque Architecture”, “Romanesque Architecture in Alava”, “Where to find Romanesque Architecture in Alava” and “the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Estibaliz” in which the history, features, and location of the major examples of Romanesque Architecture in Alava are explained. Some 240 buildings located around the province of Alava, particularly in the north and south, still conserve elements of this architectural style. Location: Next to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Estibaliz, in the adjacent hostel building. Visits: Open on Sundays from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm, free admission. Alaiza and Gaceo, Romanesque churches featuring Gothic art The Church of St. Martin of Tours is located in the small village of Gaceo, near the capital Vitoria-Gasteiz. Inside, visitors can see the medieval paintings which were discovered in 1967 when the main altarpiece was moved. Experts believe that they were painted to portray religious events for an illiterate population, and date back to the 14th century.
The mural which can be seen in the Church of St. Mary of the Assumption in Alaiza is different, however. The paintings are less refined, but more surprising. Why battle scenes are depicted remains the subject of study, it may be that they represent one of the many wars fought in the area in the 14th century. a costado 10 años, pero, el equipo representativo del futbol alavés vuelve a ser de primera. El “glorioso”, el apelativo cariñoso como se conoce al club gasteiztarra, consiguió el ascenso directo el pasado 29 de Mayo. Tras superar en Mendizorroza al Numancia, el Alavés volvió a la máxima categoría de la liga española. Gaizka Toquero y Raúl García fueron los autores de los dos goles que dieron la victoria al club vitoriano ante casi 20.000 espectadores que llenaron el estadio. Hacía muchos años que los seguidores del conjunto alavesista, no tenían ocasión de celebrar un acontecimiento similar, por lo que la celebración fue multitudinaria. La plaza de la Virgen
Blanca se llenó de aficionados que quisieron acompañar a directivos, jugadores y técnicos en la fiesta y la

t has taken 10 years but Deportivo Alavés, Alava’s football club, is playing in Spain’s first division once again. The “glorioso” (glorious), as the team from Vitoria are affectionately known, won automatic promotion back to La Liga on May 29 by beating Numancia at a home game at Mendizorroza Stadium. Gaizka Toquero and Raúl Garcia scored the two goals to win the victory for the Alava side.
As it has been years since the team’s fans had such cause for celebration, huge crowds joined in the festivities. The Virgen Blanca was overflowing with fans who turned out to celebrate with the entire team, managers and technical staff, turning Vitoria, Alava’s GREEN CAPITAL, into the blue and white of Deportivo Alaves for a few hours.

VITORIA-GASTEIZ, CENTRO DEL MEJOR JAZZ DEL MUNDO El Festival de Jazz de Vitoria-Gasteiz ha reunido a un destacado elenco de músicos para celebrar su cuadragésima edición, que se desarrollará del 12 al 16 de julio.
D
espués de 40 años, el Festival sigue fiel a su filosofía de ofrecer conciertos en exclusiva y grandes encuentros. Así, el dúo entre dos grandes talentos como Kenny Barron y Dave Holland únicamente se podrá disfrutar este verano en Vitoria, ya que se trata de una exclusiva mundial. El festival comienza el martes 12 con su noche de góspel a cargo de uno de los grupos más importantes que hay en Chicago, Bryant Jones & The Victory Gospel. El miércoles 13, Mendizorrotza acogerá una gran velada de blues. Con la nueva cantante y guitarrista Ruthie Foster, en la primera parte, a la que seguirá uno de los grandes bluesman en activo, Taj Mahal. El jueves 14 visitan Mendizorroza dos grandes del jazz. Abrirá la noche Tom Harrell y tomará el testigo Joshua Redman. El excelente saxofonista aún recuerda su última actuación en Vitoria, cuando el público se puso en pie durante su interpretación de ‘People Like You’ y aplaudió durante más de tres minutos. El piano de Kenny Barron y el contrabajo de Dave Holland se vuelven a
reunir en un encuentro exclusivo para el Festival de Jazz de Vitoria, el viernes 15. Tras este concierto, que se antoja memorable, llega el enérgico y genial Jamie Cullum, que no ha querido perderse el 40 cumpleaños del Festival y que está causando mucha expectación, en lo que a la venta de entradas se refiere.
El contrabajista vitoriano abre el ciclo del Jazz del siglo XXI y la gran voz de Cecile McLorin Salvant clausurará el festival en Mendizorrotza. La última noche, también será especial. En la primera parte, Pat Metheny y Ron Carter homenajerán a Charlie Haden. La clausura corresponderá a la extraordinaria voz de Cécile McLorin Salvant. Tras haber debutado en este escenario hace tres años, la cantante regresa con un Grammy conseguido hace unos meses, para poner la guinda al cumpleaños del certamen.

0 years on and the festival remains true to its roots. The VitoriaGasteiz Jazz Festival has always featured exclusive, major acts. This year, the festival features master duo Kenny Barron and Dave Holland who will be making an exclusive, once-off appearance in Vitoria.
Two jazz greats will take the stage in Mendizorroza on the 14th. Tom Harrell is up first, followed by Joshua Redman. The brilliantly talented saxophonist still recalls the last time he performed in Vitoria when he got a standing ovation and a round of applause lasting over three minutes after he played ‘People Like You’.
The festival begins on Tuesday, July 12, with one of Chicago’s greatest Gospel groups, Bryant Jones & the Victory Gospel. On Wednesday 13, Mendizorrotza will host an evening of blues starting with singer guitarist Ruthie Foster, followed by one of the world’s greatest living blues artists, Taj Mahal.
On Friday, July 15, pianist Kenny Barron and double bassist Dave Holland are getting together for a world-exclusive concert in Vitoria. After a concert that promises to be memorable, the lively and energetic Jamie Cullum will be
taking over, there is no way he wanted to miss the festival’s 40th anniversary. In fact, there is a lot of excitement surrounding the festival this year and tickets are selling fast. A special concert awaits on the last night. First, Pat Metheny and Ron Carter will play a tribute to musician Charlie Haden, followed by the magnificent voice of Cécile McLorin Salvant, who will close the festival. She performed in Vitoria for the first time three years ago, and is back to put the cherry on the festival birthday cake, this time with a Grammy under her belt.

Vitoria-Gasteiz se convierte en la primera ciudad de Euskadi reconocida como Destino Turístico Sostenible
V
itoria-Gasteiz ha recibido hace escasas fechas un importante reconocimiento: la certificación Biosphere Responsible Tourism que otorga el Instituto de Turismo Responsable (ITR), una de las principales organizaciones internacionales encargadas de certificar la condición de Destino Turístico Sostenible. Este título, el primero que obtiene una ciudad de Euskadi, permite dar a Vitoria-Gasteiz mayor visibilidad en el mercado turístico internacional, refuerza el posicionamiento que ya se obtuvo como Capital Verde Europea 2012 y abre nuevas posibilidades de atraer visitas relacionadas con el turismo verde y sostenible. Conseguir una certificación Biosphere no es fácil. Ha sido el resultado de un proceso de varios meses en el que se
han tenido que superar con éxito todos los test necesarios para obtener un título que hace de Vitoria-Gasteiz un referente en sostenibilidad turística. Cabe resaltar, en este sentido, que la certificación se ha logrado sin que se hayan planteado objeciones sobre la documentación presentada. En el proceso para obtener la certificación, el ITR ha valorado los siguientes aspectos: gestión sostenible, desarrollo económico y social, conservación y mejora del patrimonio cultural, conservación ambiental, calidad y seguridad e implicación del visitante. A todo ello se suma algo fundamental: el compromiso histórico de VitoriaGasteiz con la sostenibilidad. La ciudad ha protagonizado en las últimas décadas numerosas iniciativas sostenibles en los ámbitos medioambiental, social, cultural
y económico. Todo ello fue determinante para obtener el reconocimiento más elevado a estas políticas en el ámbito europeo, el de Green Capital. Esta filosofía de la sostenibilidad, de la que hacen bandera las instituciones y la ciudadanía, es fundamental en una actividad como la turística, que implica a sectores económicos muy diferentes. Ser Destino Turístico Sostenible supone, por un lado, respetar la idiosincrasia y valores locales y, por otro, desarrollar actividades respetuosas con sus recursos. Y en este sentido hay que subrayar la implicación de instituciones y agentes sociales en sumar estrategias, cada uno en su ámbito, para conseguir el objetivo común que ahora se ha logrado. Vitoria-Gasteiz is the first Sustainable Tourism Destination in the Basque Country
T
he Basque capital, VitoriaGasteiz, has recently been awarded the prestigious Biosphere Responsible Tourism certificate by the Institute of Responsible Tourism (IRT), one of the most important international organizations which award the Sustainable Tourism Destination certification. The new accolade is the first of its kind to be awarded to a city in the Basque Country and will help to raise the city’s profile internationally, further consolidating the position it earned as European Green Capital 2012 and attracting new visitors in search of environmentallyfriendly and sustainable tourism.
It is not easy to be awarded the Biosphere certification. The application process took several months, during which it was necessary to pass a series of tests successfully for Vitoria-Gasteiz to be able to join the distinguished list of sustainable tourism destinations. It is important to note that no objections were raised to the application at any stage of the process. The IRT took the following aspects into account when awarding the certification: sustainable management, social and economic development, conservation and improvement of cultural heritage, environmental conservation, quality and safety, and the involvement of tourists.
There was another vital aspect which influenced the decision, Vitoria-Gasteiz’s record for sustainability. For several decades, the city has been actively involved in numerous sustainable environmental, social, cultural and economic initiatives which were crucial to its being declared a Green Capital, the highest possible European recognition of sustainable policies. The city’s commitment to sustainability, which the people and institutions are rightly proud of, is particularly important to tourism, as it affects a variety of different economic sectors. Being a Sustainable Tourism Destination involves

Hoy en día, estos humedales están incluidos en la Lista Ramsar de Humedales de Importancia Internacional. El actual parque (unas 200 hectáreas) es fruto de una intensa labor de regeneración, gracias a la cual se pudo recuperar una zona húmeda que había sido desecada para transformarla en campos de cultivo. En el parque habitan cerca de 200 especies, entre las que destaca el visón europeo (un mamífero en peligro de extinción).
PARQUE DEL RÍO ZADORRA Al norte de la ciudad puedes pasear por los 13 kilómetros de parque fluvial que se han acondicionado a orillas del río Zadorra. Este río es de vital importancia para la ciudad y gracias a la biodiversidad que alberga forma parte de la Red Europea de Espacios Naturales Protegidos (Red Natura 2000). Salburua Park features several lagoons and a small oak forest. The wetlands are a result of a large pool of groundwater, or aquifer, which dates back to the Quaternary period. The aquifer still covers a large underground area beneath the city today. The wetlands are included in the RAMSAR list of Wetlands of International Importance. The 200 hectares of wetland in the park today are the result of an intensive recovery project, which involved returning arable farmland back to the wetland it had once been. Nearly 200 different species inhabit the park, featuring the endangered European mink.
ZADORRA RIVER PARK To the north of the city, the Zadorra Park boasts 13 km of riverbank parkland recently developed as a recreation area for visitors. The river is an important resource for the city and belongs to the European Natura 2000 network of Protected Nature Reserves thanks to the biodiversity of the area. The old town in Vitoria is also known as the “Almendra Medieval” because of its almond shape, and a visit to the Almendra Market, featuring lots of artisan produce and interesting stalls, is a must for locals and tourists. Visitors will find excellent local produce; street food and children’s corners; fascinating Almendra “secrets”, and marvellous shopping and wine routes. The market takes place on the first Saturday of the month (July 1, August 6 and September 3, this year).
Gasteiz On has arranged a series of children’s dedicated play areas, “Txiki Txokos”, around the city which are guaranteed to keep everyone happy this summer. While the parents are busy shopping for bargains, the little ones can have fun participating in workshops and playing games at the Txiki Txokos.
Since summer is a time for having fun outdoors, everyone and everything takes to the street. he Great Wine Capitals is a network of eight major cities in internationally recognised winemaking regions: Bordeaux, Cape
Town, Adelaide, Mainz, Mendoza, Porto, Valparaiso-Casablanca, San FranciscoNapa-Valley and Bilbao-Rioja. The aim of the network is to promote tourism, culture
and business exchanges between prestigious wine-making cities and regions. Since it was founded in 1999, the network has launched a series of initiatives and programmes designed to encourage excellence in wine tourism and support companies by offering a range of different services.
A highlight of the network’s activities is the annual Best Of Wine Tourism awards. The competition is designed to reward the wineries in each member city that have distinguished themselves in terms of excellence, in categories ranging from art and culture to sustainable wine tourism, and delivering quality experien-

Existen casi un centenar de estas estructuras arcaicas en la elaboración del vino, setenta de ellas en el municipio de Labastida
Descubriendo los lagares Rupestres de Rioja Alavesa
L
os lagares son pequeños pozos excavados en roca. La mayoría de ellos se encuentran cavados en bancales de piedra marga que emergen de la tierra dos o tres metros de altura, lo que ha posibilitado su conservación hasta nuestros días. En la Edad Media, los habitantes de Rioja Alavesa, utilizaban este espacio para depositar las uvas una vez realizada la vendimia y poder pisarla con los pies, recogiendo el mosto resultante. Si bien fueron los romanos quienes introdujeron el cultivo de la vid en estas tierras, los restos más antiguos que se conservan de su elaboración son los denominados lagares rupestres, que
datan de la Edad Media. Serían el antecedente de los depósitos de acero que hoy lucen imponentes en las bodegas de la región.

Son en parte, el reflejo de las gentes que habitaron el territorio del actual municipio de Labastida durante los siglos IX-XIII, tras el desplazamiento de la frontera con los musulmanes al Sur.

There are nearly one hundred stone wine presses in Rioja Alavesa, seventy of which are found in the municipality of Labastida
Discover Rioja Alavesa’s medieval stone wine presses
L
agares, or wine presses, are small stone wells which were once used for wine-making. Most of them are carved out of huge 2- and 3-metre-high marlstones which is why they have survived until now. In medieval times, the people of Rioja Alavesa used to fill these ‘vats’ with grapes, and crush them with their feet until the grape juice was released and could be collected. While the Romans were responsible for introducing wine-growing to the region, these stone wine presses, which date back to the Middle Ages, are the oldest wine-making remains in the area. They
were the precursors to the steel vats that stand proudly in the region’s wineries today.
Sonsierra Riojana region, and therefore constitute a vital part of the area’s cultural heritage.
Nowadays, the wine presses are surrounded by open countryside, but it is believed that they were built near the vineyard because there was a small village of a few houses and a church there at the time. In fact, it is common to find burial grounds in the vicinity of the wine presses.
They shed a little light on the lives of the people who lived in the Labastida area between the 9th and 13th centuries, when the Moors had already been driven south.
Almost one hundred of these stone vats have been found in the area, mostly in the west, with seventy belonging to the municipality of Labastida. Experts believe that they are the oldest existing wine presses in the Rioja Alavesa and

“El lugar de Samaniego”
Leyenda e historia se suben al escenario en Samaniego
O
riginal de José Luis de Las Heras, adaptada por Antonio Bengoa e Iker Ortíz de Zárate, esta pieza teatral, escrita en verso octosílabo y desarrollada en tres actos, pone en escena un trozo de historia y leyenda de un pueblo de la Sonsierra Navarra de la época medieval, Samaniego. Ambientada en plena Edad Media, sus nueve escenas incorporan música original compuesta para la obra. La danza, a través de un coro de canto y un grupo de dantza que interpretan los temas de “amor, del vino y de la batalla” que inspiran el texto, está también presente encima del escenario.
La Historia A finales del siglo IX, el Rey Fortún Garcés, sucesor de Iñigo Arista en el reino de Navarra, amante de la agricultura y la caza, y promotor de la creación de las “Divisas Reales”, donaciones agradecidas
por distintas causas de casas solariegas con campos de cultivo, visita la Sonsierra y en una de sus cacerías por el bosque mantiene un encuentro casual con una joven de Samaniego. Este hecho provoca la creación de una de esas Divisas Reales, la de San Mederi o San Meder, lo que da a lugar a la roturación de nuevas superficies , ganadas a la zona boscosa, y despierta el interés por la novedosa e incipiente plantación de viñedos. El segundo acto habla de las guerras de reconquista contra la ocupación musulmana y en el tercer acto, la obra ubica a sus protagonistas a mediados del siglo XI, cuando Nájera es capitalidad del reino de Navarra, y se produce la batalla de Atapuerca.

Legend and history take to the stage in Samaniego
B
ased on the work of Jose Luis de Las Heras and adapted by Antonio Bengoa and Iker Ortíz de Zárate, this 3-act play written in octosyllabic verse narrates an historic and legendary event that took place in the town of Samaniego in the Sonsierra region of Navarre. Set in the middle ages, the nine-scene play features themes of love, wine and war and an original music score, with songs and dance numbers performed by a choir and dance company.
The History At the end of the 9th century, King Fortún Garcés of Nava-rre, successor to Iñigo Arista, and the keen royal farmer and huntsman who introduced the “Divisas Reales” policy, whereby rewards of large estates were given in return for good acts or favours, comes to the Sonsierra region on a visit and while hunting in the
forest one day, he meets a young man from Samaniego. The casual encounter eventually leads to his being gifted the San Mederi or San Meder estate, and the forested land is cleared to make way for planting crops. After much debate, the crop turns out to be grapevines, a new and novel idea at the time. The second act recounts the wars against the Moors during the Reconquista while in the third act, the action moves into the middle of the 11th century when Najera is the capital of the kingdom of Navarre and the battle of Atapuerca takes place.
The Legend A legend which is inextricably linked with the area’s history and still lives on today is also featured in “El Lugar de Samaniego”. There is a reference to the area’s medieval wine presses which were carved out of huge rocks and appear on
coats of arms such as that of Samaniego Town Hall, which bears the words: “Esta espada quebrará más mi fe no faltará” (Even if my sword breaks, I will still have my faith). Some of these wine presses are still found in the area today. A particular highlight of the event is that the entire cast is made up of local amateur actors, from towns in the surrounding Rioja Alavesa area. The church venue of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción should also contribute to making the event a very special occasion.

UN VIAJE AL ORIGEN DE LA FOTOGRAFÍA A TRAVÉS DEL ORIGEN DEL VINO
E
l proyecto “225LCASK-CAMERA” se expone hasta septiembre en Bodegas Casa Primicia de Laguardia.
Esta bodega familiar que aprecia y valora los orígenes, que observa y estudia como se hacían antes las cosas, respeta la esencia y recupera las emociones, ha impulsado una singular aventura que ha convertido una barrica en testigo y notario del paso del tiempo. “¿Y si vaciáramos el vino de una barrica y la llenásemos de todo aquello que hace posible que el vino llegue hasta ella?”. La bodega dejó la respuesta en manos de alguien amante de las cosas bien hechas: Toño Cañadas, creador de las cámaras estenopeicas NOPO elaboradas artesanalmente en maderas de nogal, cerezo y abedul. “Cuando me propusieron hacer este proyecto no lo dudé un segundo. En la fase de preparativos empecé a darme cuenta de la magnitud que tenía, fue un ejercicio de vuelta a la sencillez, en todas sus
fases desde la preparación de la barrica a la toma y procesado de imágenes. Enseguida nos dimos cuenta de que no se trataba de conseguir imágenes, sino de hacer “Fotografía”. Trabajando con pinhole da igual el tamaño de tu cámara, lo importante es transitar el proceso fotográfico,

t doesn’t get much better than this. Set in beautiful surroundings in the town of Laguardia, Villa Lucia offers visitors a unique, combined food and leisure experience. At the Villa Lucia Wine Bar and chargrill restaurant, you can sample some of the excellent dishes prepared by Chef Juan Antonio Gómez, inspired in the cuisine of Luchi Santamaria. Here, local produce is cooked over vine-wood charcoal, lending it a wonderful characteristic taste. The state-of-the-art wine dispenser in the wine bar enables a wide range of wines, including Rioja Alavesa, to be sampled by the glass, adding to the experience.
The newly opened 275 m2 terrace allows visitors to sit outside, surrounded by nature, in a garden filled with native plants, shrubs and trees, and a fish pond with a relaxing, cascading waterfall. With water lilies and other aquatic plants adorning the pond, visitors can enjoy watching the birds nesting on its shore and the other small fauna in the area. At night, guests who are looking for something different to do can relax in an atmosphere of gentle lighting and soft ambient background music, or enjoy one of the live music sessions and try one of Álvaro Saranova’s classic or novelty cocktails such as the “Wine mojito” or “Wine-trio fantasy”,

MINIMIL INAUGURA SU NUEVA TIENDA DONOSTIARRA

ara los que visiten San Sebastián y Gipuzkoa este verano nada mejor que descubrir este nuevo espacio en pleno centro de la ciudad y conocer sus diseños basados en el New Basque Style, un concepto que pone en valor la cultura y las tradiciones vascas a través de la moda. La nueva tienda tiene una dimensión de 168 m2 en una única planta. Es un local centenario que en su origen (1914-1917) albergaba un taller de confección y venta de gabardinas. En su filosofía por conservar las tradiciones y adaptarse al diseño contemporáneo, Minimil ha buscado el trabajo de los mejores gremios y los mejores materiales como el roble, el mármol, el hierro o la pura lana. En Garibai 3, Donostia-San Sebastián, Minimil crece elaborando un diseño contemporáneo conservando los oficios y los materiales del País Vasco.
