The region’s capital proudly invites visitors to select their favourite from a wide range featuring Rioja Alavesa red wine and local Txakoli, in addition to wines from as many as four other D.O. regions including Cava, Rías Baixas, Alava Txakoli and Alava Cider. Visitors are expected to look, touch and eat, but most of all they will be expected to find a spot and try some of the local wine, but remember, always drink in moderation! As the tradition dictates in Vitoria, on the Friday before Christmas Eve a candle light spectacle hails the arrival of Christmas. Over 15,000 candles adorn the Old Quarter of the city lending a magical atmosphere to the main streets and squares. Candles light the Plaza del Matxete, the Arquillos arches, the San Miguel balcony, Plaza de Brullerías, Plaza Fuente de los Patos, Plaza Virgen Blanca and the following streets: Zapatería, Correría, Herrería, Siervas de Jesús, Diputación, Cuchillería, Pintorería, Nueva Fuera, Portal del Rey and San Francisco. El belén monumental que ha cumplido más de 50 años, está considerado como uno de los mejores a nivel Internacional, tanto por el número de figuras, más de 300, como por el diseño de su presentación en el parque romántico de la Florida. The Christmas Season. From December 24 to January 6 IN VITORIAGASTEIZ Christmastime in Vitoria is a very special time of the year. A lot goes into making it a festive and enjoyable time for visitors and locals with exhibitions, an outdoor skating rink, ice slides, the candlelit evening, Christmas markets, and, of course, the pièce de résistance: the enormous La Florida Park nativity scene. The 50-year-old nativity scene is considered one of the world’s best both in size and location, with over 300 figures beautifully displayed in the Romantic-style La Florida Park. Many other nativity scenes can also be visited all over the city. The season closes with the parades dedicated to Olentzero, the Basque figure who brings the children’s gifts at Christmas, and to the Three Wise Kings who also bring gifts on January the 6th. www.vitoria-gasteiz.org

Camino Ignaciano’ se ha organizado para el 13 de noviembre y recorrerá los pueblos de Kripan, Elvillar, Laguardia y Lapuebla de Labarca, todos ellos pertenecientes al GR-120: Camino Ignaciano, una iniciativa más que atractiva para fomentar el turismo religioso en Rioja Alavesa.

‘The 2nd Annual Walk. The Ignatian Way’ (November 13) passes through Kripan, Elvillar, Laguardia and Lapuebla de Labarca, all towns along the GR-120: Ignatian Way. The Ignatian Way an attractive initiative aimed at promoting religious tourism in the Rioja Alavesa region. On November 17 and 18, Rioja Alavesa will host the ‘6th Wine Tourism Forum’ to showcase the tourist attractions in the wine-making region. To end the year, visitors to Oyón-Oion between December 2 and January 1 will be able to participate in the ‘Catch some wine in Rioja Alavesa’ initiative, one of the events organized as part of the GR-38: Fish and Wine Route. FERIA DE LA ALUBIA PINTA ALAVESA. 9 de Octubre. POBES (RIBERA ALTA) El segundo domingo de octubre se celebra en Pobes la Feria de la alubia pinta alavesa. La rica legumbre es la protagonista principal de esta jornada, que cada año atrae a cientos de personas. El evento da el pistoletazo de salida con la exposición y venta de la alubia pinta alavesa. También se organiza una feria de artesanía y productos típicos del país. El programa se completa con exposiciones fotográficas, demostraciones de herri-kirolak (deporte rural vasco) y la entrega del premio “Alubia pinta alavesa de honor”. ALAVA PINTO BEAN FAIR, October 9 POBES (RIBERA ALTA) The Alava Pinto Bean Fair will be held on the second Sunday of October in Pobes. The star of the fair which annually attracts hundreds of visitors is the tasty pinto pulse. The event marks the start of the season when the native Alava bean is sold. Other crafts and traditional produce will also be on sale. There will also be an exhibition of photographs, a display of traditional Basque sports and the presentation ceremony of the “Alava pinto bean of honour” award. ROUTE OF THE WAYS This route takes you on a thought-provoking and different journey through the cultural heritage of Alava. Start by exploring the medieval streets of the “Almendra Medieval”, the name given to the old town of Vitoria-Gasteiz because of its almond-like shape. Make sure not to miss the 11th century fortified city wall and one of the city’s architectural treasures, the 16th century Santa Maria Cathedral whose guided tours have won several awards. Afterwards, as you make your way towards the plains of Alava and the medieval town of Agurain, you’ll find the remains

Discover the secrets of Alava Alava is full of hidden secrets, magical quiet spots where you can breathe in, close your eyes, and open your mind and your heart. Here are six itineraries to help you lose yourself in the region.

of a Roman spa, Termas de Arkaia, and the painted churches of Alaitza and Gazeo before continuing along to Zalduondo to see the Renaissance Palace of the Lazarraga – Amézaga family. The palace currently houses the town’s ethnographic museum. Three important mountain villages complete this route: Kontrasta, San Vicente de Arana and Santa Cruz de Campezo.

ROUTE OF THE SENSES This route shows visitors how Alava is a gift for the senses. The route starts in the area known as Cuadrilla de Ayala. At the foothills of

Sierra Salvada is the Maroño Reservoir, a sanctuary for migratory birds and a delightful habitat guaranteed to awaken the senses. The valley is also home to a number of excellent Txakoli wineries which also belong to the Txakoli Route. The next stop is at the source of the River Nervion, or “Salto del Nervión”, where visitors can admire the 220 m waterfall and the iconic Goiuri/Gujuli cascade. Next, stop off at Gorbeia Natural Park to visit the church of Our Lady of Gold and take in its spectacular natural surroundings. Before you leave, make sure not to miss the park’s Interpretation Centre on the Alava side, in Sarria.

Iniciamos la ruta en la Cuadrilla de Ayala. Allí, en las faldas de Sierra Salvada, se encuentra el Embalse de Maroño. Refugio de aves migratorias, se trata de un hábitat de enorme encanto que despierta los sentidos. Después, nos esperan las maravillosas bodegas de la Ruta del Txakoli repartidas por el valle. El Salto del Nervión, un abismo de más de 220 metros donde las sensaciones se multiplican, y la mítica Cascada de Goiuri/ Gujuli, son las siguientes paradas. Más tarde, en el parque Natural del Gorbeia, dos enclaves imprescindibles: el Santuario de Oro para admirar un paisaje maravilloso y el Centro de Interpretación y Acogida del Parque Natural de Gorbeia en su vertiente alavesa ubicado junto a la localidad de Sarria.

“Los embalses del sistema del Zadorra ofrecen playas interiores y una amplia oferta lúdica” RUTA DE LAS EXPERIENCIAS La sensación de encontrarte con la naturaleza, hace de esta Ruta una experiencia inolvidable. Comenzamos en la Cuadrilla de Montaña Alavesa, cuna del senderismo y de la bicicleta de montaña en Álava. En Antoñana visitamos su Centro de Interpretación antes de adentrarnos en la Vía Verde del Vasco-Navarro. De vuelta a VitoriaGasteiz, nos encontramos con el cerro de Olárizu teniendo a nuestros pies el Anillo Verde de la ciudad. THE NATURE ROUTE This route will immerse you in the nature of the area. It is an experience you won’t forget easily. The route starts in the mountaious region of Alava, where hiking and mountainbiking are very popular. Visit the Interpretation Centre in Antoñana before setting off on the Basque-Navarre Greenway. On the return to Vitoria-Gasteiz, at the foot of Olárizu hill is the city’s Green Belt. The exhibition and the postcard scenery at ATARIA, the Interpretation Centre of the Salburua Wetlands, are also well worth a visit. The Ullibarri-Gamboa reservoir is another attraction along the route, as are the nearby Garaio Park and Mendixur Ornithological Park. In Elosu, the Museum of Basque Ceramics (Ollerias) takes visitors through the history of the art form in the region.

Comenzamos la Ruta en la localidad de Quejana, considerada Monumento Nacional del Pais Vasco. A pocos kilómetros Artziniega, fundada en 1272 por Alfonso X, con su Casco Histórico, el Santuario de la Encina y su Museo Etnográfico. En la Cuadrilla de Añana, disfrutaremos del Valle Salado, declarado Bien de Interés Cultural y Premio Europa Nostra 2015. Nos encaminamos a la Cuadrilla de Laguardia-Rioja Alavesa, para detenernos en la villa medieval de Laguardia y perdernos en sus calles donde convergen, historia, cultura, patrimonio y gastronomía. Cita imprescindible, la visita a las iglesias fortificadas de San Juan Bautista y Santa María de los Reyes y su excepcional pórtico. Bajando la colina visitaremos el Museo Temático del Vino con actividades enoturísticas muy interesantes.

Nos situamos en la Cuadrilla de Montaña Alavesa, el Parketxe de la localidad de Korres te sumergirá en el Parque Natural de Izki, un oasis de paz. Tomando como guía el Camino Ignaciano, en la Cuadrilla de la Llanada Alavesa, el Parque Natural de Aitzgorri-Aratz, donde la naturaleza se expresa con múltiples formas. Llegando a uno de los parajes más auténticos de la Cuadrilla de ZuiaGorbeialdea, se erige el Parque Natural de Urkiola. o te equivoques. Si por magia entiendes grandes efectos especiales, chispeantes luces de colores y sonidos estridentes… ¡date la vuelta! En el Parque Natural de Gorbeia, declarado espacio protegido el 21 de junio de 1994, lo mágico es el silencio, su naturaleza abrumadora y los testimonios de vida rural que aún conserva. Aunque lo del silencio no siempre es cierto. Hay veces que la tranquilidad de los bosques y prados de Gorbeia se ve alterada por el canto de las aves, el fluir de los riachuelos y los cencerros de ovejas, caballos y vacas de razas autóctonas que pastan en sus numerosas cimas. Entre ellas la del monte Gorbeia (1.481 m.), de

donde toma su nombre este excepcional enclave de 20.016 hectáreas ubicadas entre Álava y Bizkaia. La cúspide más alta de ambas provincias es el punto de referencia del montañismo vasco y se le ha dedicado incluso una de las canciones vascas más populares. Por eso es imprescindible llegar a lo más alto y fotografiarse junto a su centenaria Cruz de hierro. Mide 18 metros de altura y fue levantada en 1907 para cumplir con la orden del Papa León XIII de erigir cruces en las cimas más altas de la cristiandad. Si te adentras en el Parque Natural de Gorbeia descubrirás, además, parajes insólitos, como el macizo de Itzina (en

Orozko), una impresionante roca caliza de paredes casi verticales; las cuevas de Mairuelegorreta, en el municipio de Zigoitia, cuyas galerías (12.340 m.) se encuentran entre las más profundas de Euskal Herria; y la cascada de Gujuli (en el pueblo de Goiuri), un salto de agua con más de 100 m. de caída libre. En cuanto a su fisonomía, Gorbeia está formado por un terreno calcáreo sobre el que se levantan frondosos bosques de hayas, robles y marojos. Entre todos ellos destacaremos el hayedo de Altube (también conocido como hayedo de Burbona) y el de Otzarreta. Ambos guardan ecosistemas de gran riqueza

et’s get it straight, it you are thinking jaw-dropping illusions, or show-stopping light and sound, this is not for you! The magic of Gorbeia Natural Park, a conservation area since June 21, 1994, lies in the silence of the place, the outstanding nature and surviving rural ways of life. Maybe the bit about silence is not totally true, because you can hear the birds singing, the sweet sound of trickling streams and the tinkling of the bells worn by the native sheep, horses and cows which graze on the hillsides. Situated on the border of Alava and Bizkaia, this outstanding park of 20,016 hectares takes its name from

the highest peak in both provinces, Mount Gorbeia (1.481 m.). Mount Gorbeia is an iconic mountain for Basque mountaineers, so much so that one of the most popular traditional Basque songs is dedicated to it. It is one good reason to climb the mountain and have a photograph taken next to the hundred-year-old iron cross that crowns the summit. Pope Leo XIII, as part of his mission to have crosses put on the highest peaks in the Christian world, had the 18-metre-high cross erected in 1907. Visitors to the heart of Gorbeia Natural Park will be rewarded with spectacular scenery such as the Itzina mountain ridge

(in Orozko), an impressive limestone massif with an almost vertical rock face; the Mairuelegorreta caves in Zigoitia, featuring some of the deepest (12,340 m) galleries in the Basque Country; and the 100 m free-falling Gujuli waterfall (in Goiuri). Gorbeia Natural Park covers an area of chalky land where forests of beech, oak and Pyrenean oak thrive. Particularly noteworthy are the Altube (also known as Burbona) and Otzarreta beech forests. Both forests boast bio-rich ecosystems which provide an ideal habitat for martens, wildcats, otters and Pyrnean muskats and an impressive

Murales con sabor a vino

l reconocido muralista australiano Guido van Helten, ha transformado los antiguos depósitos de hormigón de la bodega Solar de Samaniego de Laguardia, retratando en siete murales de más de 10 metros de altura, a habitantes de la zona seleccionados por el propio artista y relacionados con el mundo del vino. Se trata del primer trabajo que realiza en España y que podrán disfrutar todas aquellas personas que visiten la bodega. Guido van Helten, natural de Brisbane (Australia), destaca por su estilo fotorrealista y su dominio del dibujo figurativo. Ha realizado trabajos en diversos escenarios urbanos e industriales, desde Islandia hasta Chernobil. Además de ser su primer trabajo en España, el de Solar de Samaniego es la primera intervención de

estas dimensiones que Van Helten realiza en interior. Ubicados en el “Espacio Medio Millón”, los murales aprovechan la curvatura de los depósitos, la textura y el color del hormigón para crear “un trabajo monumental e impactante, pero al mismo tiempo integrado en el entorno industrial donde se ubica”, señala Cesar, director creativo del grupo Solar de Samaniego. La intervención se enmarca en la iniciativa enoliteraria “Beber entre líneas”, entrelazando los procesos creativos del vino y la literatura y recuperando un patrimonio industrial vitivinícola que data de 1970. Los murales del Espacio Medio Millón, se suman a partir de ahora al resto de atractivos artísticos y arquitectónicos de la bodega, entre los que destacan el inte-

riorismo realizado por Lázaro Rosa-Violán, diseñador de tiendas, restaurantes y hoteles en todo el mundo, o la exposición de los dibujos originales que Elena Odriozola, Premio Nacional de Ilustración, ha realizado para la Colección 7 Cepas. El grupo Solar de Samaniego plantea la iniciativa “Beber entre líneas”, como fusión del vino y la literatura, mediante una propuesta creativa multidisciplinar. Esta filosofía se inspira en los primeros vinos nacidos de la Finca la Escobosa, perteneciente a la bodega y que fue propiedad del escritor Félix María de Samaniego en el siglo XVIII. “Beber entre líneas” integra este espíritu literario en las instalaciones del grupo bodeguero, en la personalidad de sus vinos y en cada una de sus iniciativas artísticas y culturales.

Murals that taste of wine

t the Solar de Samaniego winery in Laguardia renowned Australian street artist Guido van Helten has been transforming old wine silos with 10-metrehigh portraits of local people associated with wine-making and selected by the artist. They are his first murals in Spain and can be enjoyed by visitors to the winery.

A native of Brisbane (Australia), Guido van Helten is known for his photorealist style and his mastery of figure drawing. He has painted murals in urban and industrial locations all over the world, from Iceland to Chernobyl. Not only is the Solar de Samaniego project the artist’s first in Spain, it is also the first time he has painted such a large project indoors.

Located in the area called “Espacio Medio Millón”, the artist used the curve of the silos and the texture and colour of the concrete to create “an enormous, striking work, which somehow fits in with the industrial surroundings”, according to Cesar, creative director at Solar de Samaniego. The project is part of the wine and literature initiative “Drinking between the lines”, which seeks to blend the creative processes involved in wine-making and literature and recover the industrial wine heritage which dates back to 1970. The murals are the latest addition to the winery’s array of artistic and architectural attractions which include interiors by international retail, restaurant and hotel designer Lázaro Rosa-Violán, and an exhibition of original drawings by

National Illustration Prize winner Elena Odriozola, specially commissioned for the winery’s 7 Cepas collection of wine. The Soler de Samaniego initiative “Drinking between the lines” seeks to meld wine and literature through a multidisciplinary, creative plan of action. Inspiration for the project came from the first wines that were produced at La Escobosa, an estate owned by writer Félix María de Samaniego in the 18th century and now property of the winery. The aim of “Beber entre líneas”, as the initiative is known in Spanish, is to infuse the winery, its wines, and its cultural and artistic endeavours with a literary spirit.

Así comienza “EL SILENCIO DE LA CIUDAD BLANCA” la novela de Eva Gª Sáenz de Urturi, el thriller que se ha encumbrado a lo más alto de las listas de títulos más leídos este verano 2016. was enjoying the best Spanish omelette in the world, with the eggs half set and the potatoes soft in the middle but crispy on the outside, when I received the call that would change my life, for the worse, I should say. That is how Eva Gª Sáenz de Urturi’s latest thriller, “EL SILENCIO DE LA CIUDAD BLANCA” (“THE SILENCE OF THE WHITE CITY”), starts. One of the most popular reads this summer, the crimes in the story are all connected to the history of Alava. Guided tours of the locations in the novel have proven very successful with readers. So much so, in fact, that we decided to create our own very literary tour of the city to share with you right here. Some of the landmarks included in our guide are referenced in novels by local writers, while others appear in the works of international writers such as Ken Follett. “VITORIA-GASTEIZ EN ACUARELA Y VERSO”, for example, takes us on a jour-

ney through the history of the city, right back to the site of the city’s first settlers, on the hill that eventually became Vitoria, centuries later. The book also mentions several palaces and landmarks which date back to medieval Vitoria, the later expansion of the city, the four towers and the city’s enclosed balconies, taking us up to the present. Work by several local artists and poets appear in the book, including paintings by Javier Ortiz de Guinea and poetry by Tito Murua, José Ignacio Besga, Karmele López de Uralde, Aurora Nieva and Elisa Rueda. The delightful and historic Plaza de la Virgen Blanca is a must along the route. In the middle of the square stands a statue by Gonzalo Borrás commemorating the Battle of Vitoria, erected in 1917. The statue recalls the liberation of the city on the 21 of June 1813, when Joseph Bonaparte was forced to flee the city escorted by his French troops. The battle against

Les sugerimos una parada muy visual en un punto central de la ciudad como es la plaza de la Virgen Blanca. En el centro de la explanada destaca el monumento a la Batalla de Vitoria, obra de Gonzalo Borrás inaugurada en 1917. La escultura recuerda la batalla librada el 21 de junio de 1813 entre las tropas francesas, que escoltaban a José Bonaparte en su huida, y tropas españolas, británicas y portuguesas al mando de Arthur Wellesley, el futuro duque de Wellington. La victoria aliada provocó la retirada definitiva de las tropas francesas de España. Son precisamente los años de la Guerra de la Independencia donde arranca “LA MUJER DEL RELOJ”, novela histórica escrita por Alvaro Arbina que antes de salir a la venta iba ya por su tercera edición. “GUARDA MI SECRETO” inspirada en un hecho real, es la obra con la que se ha estrenado Pilar Lloves Masid en el mundo de la literatura. Telefonista del Hospital Psiquiátrico de Alava, esta autora local arranca su historia con una llamada telefónica al entonces psiquiátrico de Santa María de las Nieves, convertido hoy en la biblioteca del campus de la Universidad del País Vasco, pidiendo información sobre un niño abandonado en 1956. En la actualidad “Las Nieves” está catalogado

como centro neurálgico para la vida universitaria del campus y al mismo tiempo como edificación emblemática para la ciudad de Vitoria. Capítulo aparte merece la escritora Toti Martínez de Lezea. Una autora alavesa consolidada, referente en novela histórica dentro de la nueva narrativa española y una de las escritoras más leídas en el momento actual. De entre su larga lista de títulos hemos elegido “La calle de la judería”. Una historia que comienza en el año 1404, con el nacimiento de Josef, segundo hijo del médico judío, David ben Sahadia y la muerte en el parto de la madre del niño. La historia se enmarca en el Casco Viejo de la capital alavesa, en especial la Casa del Cordón, palacio de los Sanchez Bilbao, donde fueron alojados los Reyes Católicos. La Casa del Cordón, denominada así porque tiene un cordón franciscano de piedra rodeando uno de los arcos de entrada, es un curioso ejemplar del arte civil de la Edad Media, y uno de los pocos edificios civiles que conserva una bóveda estrellada gótica. Para terminar, nos detendremos en la catedral Santa María de Vitoria en la que el famoso escritor galés Ken Follett se inspiró para escribir la continuación de su gran obra “Los pilares de la tierra”.

El misterio que emanan sus muros fue lo que fascinó en 2002 al novelista. Ken Follett vino a Vitoria – Gasteiz para ofrecer una conferencia y quedó deslumbrado por el proyecto de rehabilitación de una de las catedrales góticas más singulares de Europa. Tanto es así, que aseguró que de haberla conocido antes, hubiese basado su exitosa novela “Los pilares de la tierra”, en ella. La “Fundación Catedral Santa María” fue fundamental en el trabajo de documentación para escribir su siguiente relato: “Un mundo sin fin”. Su vinculación a Vitoria quedó sellada para siempre cuando el autor eligió la capital alavesa para la presentación a nivel mundial de esta novela. La “Fundación Catedral Santa María” que desarrolla el programa “Abierto por obras” compartiendo las obras de rehabilitación con los visitantes, ha alcanzado un nuevo hito con la apertura al público de la cripta musealizada. Podríamos extendernos en otros autores reconocidos que eligieron Vitoria-Gasteiz o el territorio de Álava para incluirlos en las tramas de sus obras literarias, pero los nombres de Pedro González de Viñaspre, Pio Baroja, Benito Pérez Galdós o Vallejo Nájera los dejaremos para otro viaje literario.

The victory of the allied forces led to the eventual withdrawal of the French troops from Spain. Coincidentally, Alvaro Arbina’s historical novel “LA MUJER DEL RELOJ”, also starts during the War of Independence. A third edition of his novel was published before it even went on sale. Based on a true story, “GUARDA MI SECRETO” is Pilar Lloves Masid’s first foray into the world of literature. A telephonist at Alava’s Psychiatric hospital herself, Masid starts her debut novel with a phone-call to what was once the Santa María de las Nieves psychiatric hospital, asking about a child that had been abandoned there in 1956. The original building is now the University of the Basque Country library, one of the city’s most iconic buildings and one of the most popular spots on the campus.

Authoress Toti Martínez de Lezea deserves a special mention. Currently one of the most widely read writers around, this accomplished writer is a major exponent of the historical novel in modern Spanish literature. From her long list of published works we have selected “La calle de la judería”, a story that begins in 1404 with the birth of Jewish doctor David ben Sahadia’s second son, Josef, and with the death of the mother in childbirth. The story is set in the House of Rope, a palace in Vitoria’s Old Town which was owned by the Sanchez Bilbao family and where the Catholic Monarchs sometimes stayed. The House of Cordón, so called because of the stone cord rope which decorates one of the entrance arches, is an interesting example of civic Gothic art in the Middle Ages, and one of the only non-religious buildings which conserves a gothic ribbed vault. A good place to end this literary tour is Santa Maria de Vitoria Cathedral, which

inspired the sequel to the highly successful novel “Pillars of the Earth” by acclaimed Welsh author Ken Follett. The writer visited Vitoria in 2002 to speak at a conference, and was entranced by the secrets hidden within the cathedral walls. He was also fascinated by the restoration work that was being carried out on what is classed as one of Europe’s most unique Gothic cathedrals. In fact, he was so impressed that he said that he would have used it as a setting for “Pillars of the Earth” had he known about it. The “Santa Maria Cathedral Foundation” was instrumental in providing the documents he needed to write his follow-up novel: “World without End”. Follett’s relationship with the city was sealed when he chose is as the venue for the international presentation of the book. The Santa Maria Cathedral Foundation was also responsible for the launch of the hugely successful “Open for Restoration Work” initiative, which offers the public guided tours of the cathedral’s restoration work. The recent opening of the crypt museum has further added to the number of visitors to the cathedral. The list of writers who have chosen Vitoria and Alava as the setting for their novels could go on and on, but we are going to leave the likes of Pedro González de Viñaspre, Pio Baroja, Benito Pérez Galdós and Vallejo Nájera for another time. AUTUMN IS AN EXCITING SEASON IN VITORIA tents and some five hundred stands featuring Rioja Alavesa and Txakoli wineries, a range of products bearing the D.O. label, tastings and presentations, and, of course, the acclaimed Basque pintxos. Apart from these special events, the Almendra Market is held in Vitoria’s Old Quarter on the first Saturday of every month. The Old Quarter is also known as the “Almendra Medieval”, or “Medieval Almond”, because of its shape. Locals and visitors attend the market in search of top quality produce and crafts. Other attractions at the market include food stands or places where you can swap items; and the planned routes where you can discover the fascinating “secrets of the Almendra”, or go shopping or wine-tasting are guaranteed to please.

HERE’S SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE: A journey back to medieval times, fashion and a bridal exhibition are just three of the many events in store autumn in the capital of Alava. From September 23 -25, Vitoria will host the 15th Medieval Market, a popular event which sees the streets and squares of the Old Town transformed into medieval times, when the town was an important crossroads for travellers in the region. There will be over 200 stands and stalls where the city’s retailers and craftspeople will be selling their wares, and the local bars and restaurants will be offering special deals and routes aimed at pleasing visiting gourmets. Fashion and glamour follow the medieval fair. Vitoria’s Artium Museum will host the prestigious Pasarela Gasteiz On fashion week from September 26 to October 1. The 15-year-old much-awaited event attracts customers and fashion enthusiasts from all over the country. This year, as well as showcasing the best of the autumn-winter 2016 collection, the Pasarela is planning a special event to mark its XXX anniversary, a celebration that cannot be missed. Continuing on the theme of fashion, Vitoria will be hosting the second edition of the Expo Novias Araba 2016 bridal

fair from October 21 to 23, mid-way through autumn. The event, the busiest trade fair in the region, will be held in the Olárizu Salon of the Palacio Europa. Visitors will be able to see bridal gowns and groomswear, wedding outfits and accessories, car rentals, ideas for décor, floral arrangements, photographers, event furniture hire, makeup, hairstyles, beauty treatments, restaurant and catering services, everything for the perfect wedding day. Coffee lovers will enjoy Vitoria’s “Coffee Week”, which runs from November 4 13 when local bars and restaurants will be offering signature coffee and cakes at very attractive prices. Santiago Barrueco es el responsable comercial y de marketing de la CÁMARA DE COMERCIO, INDUSTRIA Y SERVICIOS DE ÁLAVA. Hablamos con él de la creación de ABRA INTERNATIONAL, la división internacional de la Asociación de Bodegas de Rioja Alavesa.

Cómo surgió la idea de crear ABRA INTERNATIONAL?

La idea parte de la detección de unas necesidades o debilidades comunes, que tenían bodegas pequeñas de Rioja Alavesa de cara a comenzar con sus procesos de internacionalización. Dentro de éstas cabe destacar la falta de un músculo financiero importante para afrontar dicho reto, la falta de conocimiento de inglés lo suficientemente fluido, un marketing adecuado a los mercados a abordar… Tras una reflexión de lo que podíamos plantear en una fase inicial, se valoró que lo más idóneo era una cooperación empresarial entre diferentes bodegas pero con objetivos comunes. Este fue el inicio con 13 bodegas, que actualmente se ha convertido en una Asociación de 20 bodegas. ¿Qué papel ha jugado la Cámara de Álava en su creación? La Cámara dentro de su ADN tiene dos elementos clave como son, la internacionalización y la cooperación empresarial. Pusimos nuestra experiencia al servicio de las bodegas tanto en la fase de creación y constitución, como ahora en la fase de gestión y coordinación del proyecto.

Una vez que el proyecto es una realidad. ¿Cuáles son los pasos que estáis siguiendo para dar a conocer las bodegas de Rioja Alavesa a nivel internacional? ¿Cuáles son los planes más inmediatos? El objetivo es posicionar nuestros caldos como vinos de alta calidad. Caldos de bodegas pequeñas familiares que elaboran sus vinos con especial mimo. Por ello, nos estamos dirigiendo a mercados donde estos atributos están valorados. Tenemos un plan de acción para el año 2016 y ya hemos definido el plan de 2017, que engloba viajes a destino pero también la realización de misiones inversas.

Sé que habéis organizado salidas al exterior. ¿Cómo ha sido la experiencia y la acogida en las ferias en las que habéis participado? Podemos decir que el balance es positivo, ya que aun sabiendo que el mercado internacional requiere un esfuerzo constante de posicionamiento de marca y seguimiento, ya estamos recogiendo frutos del trabajo realizado en forma de pedidos en mercados tan complicados como son el norteamericano o el japonés. ¿Crees que en este caso se cumple aquello de que “la unión hace la fuerza”?

ow did ABRA INTERNATIONAL come about?

We identified similar shortcomings and challenges among small Rioja Alavesa wineries when attempting to break into the international market. Among the weaknesses we detected was an important lack of funding, insufficient English language skills and a marketing approach which wasn’t right for foreign markets… We discussed how best to broach the subject, and eventually decided on a busi-

ness cooperation strategy for different wineries with shared objectives.

Sin duda. En nuestro caso se cumple, ya que nuestras bodegas difícilmente por sí mismas podrían plantearse llevar a cabo las acciones que hemos desarrollado durante este año. Además de la asistencia a Ferias y Congresos, ¿tenéis prevista alguna otra acción puntual en el exterior? Tenemos varias acciones en el exterior básicamente enfocadas a la captación de importadores y distribuidores pero no a través de ferias, sino, mediante encuentros en exclusiva con potenciales importadores. Tenemos previsto que tanto importadores de EEUU como de Japón vengan a conocernos. Que visiten nuestros viñedos y bodegas, beban nuestros vinos y tengan una fotografía completa del potencial de las bodegas de ABRA INTERNATIONAL.

We have a plan of action of 2016 and have another one drawn up for 2017 during which we will make business trips abroad but we will also invite potential business associates to come and visit us here. I understand you have made some commercial trips abroad. How did they go and what was the reaction at trade fairs? Overall it’s been positive. We are aware that constant effort and follow-up is required to position a brand on the international market but we are starting to see results. We are getting orders from complicated markets such as the US and Japan. So would you say it’s a case of “unite and conquer”?

Without question. It’s certainly true in our case. Our wineries would never be able to undertake what we have done this year individually. Apart from attending trade fairs and exhibitions, have you any other plans for generating business abroad? We have planned a few trips aimed at locating importers and distributors. Rather than seeing them at fairs, we will arrange private meetings with potential importers. We also plan to invite Japanese and American importers here so they can meet us, visit the vineyards and the wineries, taste our wine for themselves and get a full picture of the potential of the wineries in ABRA INTERNATIONAL.

La Sierra de Cantabria ofrece rutas para disfrute de caminantes y montañeros

l visitante que llega a Rioja Alavesa apreciará de manera inmediata la cadena montañosa que se yergue majestuosa sobre el magnífico valle de viñedos que conforma esta comarca al sur de Álava. Ni que decir tiene que al primer trago de vino, el turista apreciará la calidad del rojo líquido que llega a su boca. En la actualidad, los caldos de esta región se encuentran entre los más prestigiosos del mercado internacional, algo en lo que tiene mucho que ver la influencia de la Sierra de Cantabria. Sus altas paredes resguardan los viñedos de

temperaturas extremas, haciendo que la comarca cuente con un microclima caracterizado por inviernos húmedos y templados y veranos secos y calurosos. Pero además de su efecto en el clima, la Sierra de Cantabria ofrece al visitante la posibilidad de recorrer magníficas rutas para practicar senderismo.

Ruta del Vino y el Pescado Inicia su andadura en la localidad de Oyón-Oion, llegando en su primera etapa

hasta la Villa de Laguardia. Se trata del GR-38, un sendero de gran recorrido que discurre, en parte, por tierras de Rioja Alavesa. Conocido como la Ruta del Vino y el Pescado, el trayecto permite atravesar Euskadi de sur a norte, surcando paisajes tan diversos como cautivadores desde las tierras del viñedo en Oyón-Oion hasta el puerto de Bermeo en Bizkaia. A lo largo de esta ruta, tendremos la oportunidad de reconocer en ella, la historia de nuestros antepasados. Utilizada antaño por arrieros, su calzada alberga todavía el aroma de las mercancías que por ella circulaban.

Sierra de Cantabria has a range of attractive routes for walkers and mountaineers

Hiking through vineyards and mountains

s soon as visitors reach the southern part of Alava, Rioja Alavesa, they will see the majestic mountain range towering over a valley of beautifully tilled vineyards. Once they have tried it, they will be no less impressed by the excellent quality of the local red wine. Nowadays, the wines of the region are classed among the best in the world, and the Sierra de Cantabria is partly responsible for this success. The steep mountain slopes protect the vines from extreme temperatures, affording the area a unique microclimate of mild, rainy

winters and hot, dry summers. But apart from this, Sierra de Cantabria offers tourists some wonderful hiking trails.

Wine and Fish Route The first stage in the Wine and Fish Route goes from Oyón – Oion to Laguardia. It is one of the stages of the much longer GR-38 walking trail. Also known as the Wine and Fish Route, the GR-38 walking trail runs through the Basque Country from south to north, featuring beautiful and varied scenery ranging from

the vineyards in Oyón-Oion (Alava) in the south to the fishing port of Bermeo (Bizkaia) in the north. Walkers can learn about the history of the area along the way. Used in former times as a packhorse trail, it still retains much of the flavour of the goods that were once transported along it. Cart drivers would set off from the ports of Bermeo, Ondarroa and Lekeitio, their mules laden down with fresh and salted fish to be sold inland, and would fill their carts with wheat, salt, vinegar and wine on the return journey.

El camino Ignaciano se ha trazado a partir de las anotaciones del santo. Se inicia en Loyola y nos conduce hasta Manresa. De los puertos de Bermeo, Ondarroa y Lekeitio partían los carreteros con sus mulas cargadas de pescado fresco o en salazón, volviendo en su viaje de retorno con sus carruajes repletos de trigo, sal, vinagre y vino.

GR-120. Camino Ignaciano La ruta nos lleva por el itinerario que el Caballero Ignacio de Loyola recorrió en el año 1522 desde su localidad natal en Azpeitia (Gipuzkoa) hasta la localidad catalana de Manresa. El fundador de la Compañía de Jesús, inició su peregrinación hasta la ciudad santa de Jerusalen, después de su conversión espiritual en Loyola. En la actualidad el camino, que se ha trazado a partir de las anotaciones del santo, se inicia en la casa natal de Ignacio en Loyola y nos conduce hasta la conocida como “Cova de San Ignacio” en Manresa, cerca del Monasterio de Montserrat en Catalunya. Se trata de un recorrido largo y exigente, de aproximadamente 675 km, que atraviesa cinco comunidades autónomas y que se puede realizar en unos treinta días. El itinerario se inicia en tierras vascas y atraviesa dos de sus provinicas, Gipuzkoa y Álava, antes de proseguir su andadura. Un total de siete etapas y ciento cincuenta kilómetros, balizados con las marcas del GR 120, que nos depararán una experiencia única.

Subida al Toloño La Sierra de Cantabria muestra en su sky-line numerosas crestas y cimas que hacen que la imponente mole de piedra y roca se muestre majestuosa sobre el singular paisaje de viñedos de Rioja Alavesa. En esta serie de picos,

el Monte Toloño es un referente que atrae a muchos montañeros que pueden disfrutar, en su recorrido hacia la cima, de las ruinas del Monasterio de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles de Toloño, hacia el que nos conduce un sendero. Otro de los atractivos que nos ofrece la ruta hacia esta montaña, a la que se accede desde la localidad de Labastida, son las neveras, grandes pozos circulares donde antaño se recogía la nieve para posteriormente venderla. La vertiente norte del Toloño se encuentra cubierta por hayedos, lo que contrasta con la solana, de vegetación más austera. Una vez en la cima disfrutaremos de una vista espectacular sobre el mar de viñedos de la comarca más al sur de la provincia de Alava, Rioja Alavesa.

The Toloño Mountain Climb

GR-120 - Ignatian Way The Ignation Way is the route taken by Ignatius of Loyola in 1522 when he travelled from his birthplace, Azpeitia (Gipuzkoa), to the Catalan town of Manresa. Founder of the Company of Jesus (Order of the Jesuits), he set out on a pilgrimage to the holy city of Jerusalem following his spiritual conversion in Loyola. Today’s trail is a reconstruction based on the writings of the saint, starting at the house he was born in in Loyola and

finishing in Catalonia at the “Cova de San Ignacio”, Manresa, close to the Monastery of Montserrat. It is a long and challenging 675 km route which goes through five autonomous communities and takes about 30 days to complete. The trail starts in the Basque Country and goes through the provinces of Gipuzkoa and Alava, before continuing on. The 150 km route, divided into 7 stages, is waymarked with the GR 120 trail markers and offers hikers a completely unique experience.

The Sierra de Cantabria mountain range which dominates the background of the iconic Rioja Alavesa vineyard landscape features numerous rocky ridges and peaks. Among them is the very wellknown Mount Toloño, a mountain whose summit is very popular with mountaineers. The trail starts in the town of Labastida and walkers can visit the ruins of the Monastery of Our Lady of the Angels of Toloño by taking a small detour on the way up. Other attractions along the route include the neveras (lit. “refrigerators”), large round wells which were once used to store snow which would be sold at a later date. The northern slope of the mountain is covered in beech forests, in contrast to the rather starker southern sun-facing slope. A spectacular view of the sea of vineyards which cover Rioja Alavesa, the southernmost part of Alava, is the reward for hikers who make it to the summit.

Ese será precisamente el viaje que comenzará Artium el próximo 2 de noviembre y que llegará a destino en abril de 2017, justo a tiempo para celebrar su 15º aniversario. Un periodo en el que,

con motivo de los trabajos de reparación de suelos que se van a desarrollar en el Museo, las salas de exposición permanecerán cerradas al público. Pero no creáis que vamos a estar cerrados. Todo lo contrario. Durante el mes de octubre y de manera especial en el Puente de Todos los Santos, el museo va a contar con una programación muy intensa en la que la visita guiada a las exposiciones que cierran y las actividades en torno a las mismas, será uno de los platos fuertes, como no puede ser de otra manera. Y a partir del 2 de noviembre y mientras duran las obras, ahí cuando el backstage

Antoñana, la joya medieval de la Montaña Alavesa

iene el encanto de cualquier pueblecito de montaña. Pero Antoñana tiene, además, el privilegio de aunar en sus calles historia, arquitectura y tradición a partes iguales. La villa medieval y amurallada fue declarada Monumento Nacional de Euskadi. Ubicada a la orilla izquierda del rio Ega, Antoñana ofrece al visitante, antes de entrar por la única puerta medieval que se conserva, un entorno de gran valor paisajístico que merece la pena observar por su gran belleza. Asentada sobre un antiguo fuerte, en las tres calles principales que atraviesan la villa de norte a sur, encontramos casas blasonadas con escudos de armas en las fachadas. De todas ellas hay que destacar la casa-torre de los Hurtado de

Mendoza, Condes de Orgaz (siglo XIII), y la casa palacio con torreón de los Elorza (siglo XIV). La magia de Antoñana reside en sus estrechas calles, comunicadas por pasadizos cubiertos de madera y con cantones que transportan al visitante a la época medieval. Su muralla, levantada en 1182 por orden de Sancho el Sabio, fue el elemento que articuló su arquitectura, dado que las casas se fueron construyendo aprovechando la propia muralla como fachada. Al final de la Calle Mayor nos espera la torre del homenaje de planta cuadrada y, muy cerca, la iglesia dedicada a San Vicente Mártir, construida sobre una antigua iglesia- fortaleza. El edificio del siglo XVII que albergaba la cárcel, adosado también a la muralla, se ha convertido en Centro Apícola y Sala de Exposiciones.

Fuera del recinto medieval, merece una visita el Centro de Interpretación de la Vía Verde del Ferrocarril Vasco – Navarro, alojado en tres vagones que imitan a los que fueron conocidos como “El Trenico”, que operó entre 1927 y 1967, uniendo Estella, Vitoria-Gasteiz y Bergara. El primer vagón acoge la oficina de turismo de la comarca de Montaña Alavesa y el segundo se centra en “El Trenico”, además de ofrecer información sobre rutas de senderismo y en bicicleta y el Parque Natural de Izki. Por último, en el tercer vagón se recrean las estancias originales del ferrocarril, incluyendo billetes, imágenes y uniformes de la época. Una última sugerencia: alquilar una bicicleta en el local habilitado para ello y recorrer cualquiera de las rutas que nos ofrece el incomparable entorno.

Antoñana, a medieval gem in the mountains of Alava

Basque-Navarre Railway Greenway, which is housed in three reproduction railway carriages based on the train that connected Estella, Vitoria and Bergara from 1927 to 1967. The Alava Mountains Tourist Office is in the first carriage, while the second one showcases the old railway and train and offers tourist information for hikers and cyclists, and information on Izki Natural Park. The third carriage has been fitted to look like the original train, complete with tickets, photographs and uniforms of the period. n addition to having all the charm of a mountain village, Antoñana also boasts a fascinating history, architecture and tradition. Situated on the left bank of the River Ega, this walled medieval town is a Basque National Monument. When visitors arrive in Antoñana, as they approach the town’s only remaining gateway, it is worth turning around to take in the wonderful view of the surrounding area. The town was built on the site of an old fort. The town’s three main streets, which run from north to south, feature impressive houses with coats of arms on the façades. Noteworthy examples include the tower house of the Hurtado de Mendoza family and that of the Earl and Countess of Orgaz (18th century),

or the turreted mansion owned by the Elorza family (14th century). The charm of Antoñana lies in its narrow streets joined by walkways covered with tiled wooden roofs and overhanging eaves, reminiscent of medieval times. The fortified wall, which was constructed in 1182 by King Sancho the Wise, was central to the building of these grand dwellings, as it was used to as their façade. At the end of Calle Mayor there is a square keep and nearby is the Church of St. Vincent Martyr which stands on the site of a former fortified church. The 17th century building which was the former town gaol now houses the Bee-keeping Centre and Exhibition Hall. Attractions outside the Medieval Quarter include the Interpretation Centre of the

Si las temperaturas se mantienen suaves, los arbolados no sólo ofrecen frutos rojos, bayas y escaramujos a quien sepa encontrarlos. También hacer el gran regalo culinario de la estación y se pueblan de hongos y setas.

WILD MUSHROOMS, THE AROMA OF AUTUMN ON A PLATE Low-hanging mist and the season’s first rain drench the forest floor at the end of September every year. If the weather remains mild, there is much more than fruit, berries and rosehips on offer in the forest. Those who know how to look in the undergrowth will discover autumn’s greatest gift, an abundance of wild mushrooms.

o matter how dry the summer has been, the rains of September and October always awaken the mycelia, still dormant from the warm dry weather. The best mushroom seasons are the result of alternating days of rain and warm sunshine, like the conditions last year. The only threat lies in the proliferation of insects, whose larva feeds off the mushrooms, and the season’s first frost.

The lack of untilled elevated land is the reason the delicious Cardoncello (Pleurotus eryngii), one of the best mushrooms, does not grow here as it tends to grow near the roots of wild cardoons. However, our oak, beech and pine forests, poplars and meadows more than make up for it.

Around the end of September, wild mushrooms start making their way into the kitchens of traditional and avantgarde restaurants, and indeed of the region’s well-known private gastronomic clubs. Sometimes they are served as an accompaniment to stews or rice and pasta dishes. Elsewhere, they constitute the main ingredient, for example when they are scrambled with eggs, or sautéed, grilled or roasted on their own. While they are often used for traditional recipes, they are also found in Basque nouvelle cuisine. No matter how they are served, they introduce the aroma of autumn to the dish and to the palate. The Bronze Bolete (Boletus Aereus) is the star of the season. Its pleasant scent and taste, and the firm white flesh under the dark cap stand out in

any dish, including salads. A close relation, the Cep or Penny Bun Bolete (Boletus Edulis), also features consistent white flesh, a yellow-brown cap, a pleasant aroma and delicate flavour and is possibly one of the most popular mushrooms for cooking. The firm, compact, orange-tinged flesh of the Saffron Milkcap (Lactarius Deliciosus), and its unmistakable aroma make it one of the season’s firm favourites. They are delicious stewed with potatoes. The large cap of the Parasol mushroom (Macrolepiota Procera), is exquisite and light when dipped in batter and fried in very hot oil. The Yellow Foot (Cantharellus Lutescens) served with foie gras mi-cuit or with a rib steak as a side dish adds an exceptional note of flavour.

DISFRUTE DE LAS SETAS SIN RIESGOS Deje que los muchos micólogos aficionados que hay en Álava, Bizkaia y Gipuzkoa recolecte las setas. Un ojo inexperto o poco habituado a este territorio y sus hongos puede llevarle a cometer un error que le provoque una buena indigestión. Las jornadas micológicas de los locales de restauración - frecuentes y económicas- estarán en conocimiento del personal del hotel o de la Oficina de Turismo. Acompáñelas con un buen vino o txakoli. Y, si aún así quiere ir a verlas este otoño, pruebe en estos bosques: y también de los gastronómicos, además de las populares sociedades gastronómicas tan típicas del territorio, empiezan a contar con setas y hongos al lado de sus fogones. En ocasiones los emplean como complementos a estofados, arroces o platos de pasta; otras veces como ingrediente principal, en revueltos, a la sartén, a la plancha o al horno. Frecuentemente siguiendo recetas tradicionales. Pero también en nuevas creaciones. Sea como sea, las setas y hongos siempre llevan a la cocina y al paladar el perfume del otoño. El Hongo Negro (Boletus Aereus) es el rey, por su carne firme, dura, blanca, no coloreada bajo la cutícula del sombrero oscuro y un olor y sabor agradables, que le lleva a destacar en cualquier preparación, incluso en ensaladas. Su hermano el Hongo Blanco (Boletus Edulis) de carne también blanca, inmutable, y sombrero pardo, olor agradable, sabor suave, resulta una de las setas más sabrosas y quizá la más usada en micogastronomía. La carne dura, compacta y anaranjada del Níscalo, y su aroma inconfundible, (Lactarius Deliciosus) jamás falta en los figones en esta época. Muy recomendables los níscalos guisados con patatas. El gran sombrero de una Galamperna (Macrolepiota Procera), rebozado y frito en aceite muy caliente resulta exquisito y ligero. Las Angulas de Monte (Cantharellus Lutescens) con micuit o acompañando un entrecot proporcionan unos matices incomparables. Pero puede buscar usted también Lengua de Vaca (Hydnum Repandum), Pie Azul (Lepista Nuda), Seta de Cura (Russula

Virescens), Rebozuelo (Cantharellus Cibarius), Pardilla (Clitocybe Nebularis), Carbonera (Russula Cyanoxantha), Barbuda (Coprinus Comatus) y alguna otra de los joyas gastronómicas de nuestros bosques y praderas. Pero búsquelos en un restaurante, taberna o sociedad gastronómica - halle la manera de entrar en una- y emplee los senderos del monte para disfrutar del paisaje.

Txakoli Señorío de Astobiza Este txakolí se ha elaborado exclusivamente con variedades de uva autóctonas, “Hondarrabi zuri” como varietal principal, y acompañado en menor proporción por “petit courbu” y “gros manseng”. Una producción cerrada de un viñedo de 10 hectáreas, situado en el municipio de Okondo, de cuya tierra y microclima toma su calidad y personalidad. Se trata de un txakolí de estilo moderno, que conserva y potencia los mejores rasgos tradicionales de este tipo de vinos. Fresco en boca, sabroso, equilibrado, final aromático largo y persistente, con elegante nota amarga de carácter varietal y notas minerales procedentes del suelo de cultivo.
