Spread out over three pavilions at the Bilbao Exhibition Center, this year’s edition will feature an incredible program of games, sports and educational activities, workshops and traditional stands and booths. ANTHROPOLOGICAL FILM FESTIVAL NAFA 2013

LOS VASCOS Y LA DANZA. LUCÍA LACARRA

DARÍO DE REGOYOS (1857-1913). LA AVENTURA IMPRESIONISTA

The NAFA FILM FESTIVAL is Europe's oldest anthropological film festival. Promoted by the Nordic Anthropological Film Association, the event is celebrated each year in a different European city. Its 33rd edition will be hosted in Bilbao, where 20 of the year’s most significant anthropological films will be screened. This year, the NAFA Film Festival will be accompanied by a symposium titled “Character and Destiny: reflections on contemporary ethnographic film and the documentary” in which participants from several countries will discuss the situation and personality of non-fiction contemporary film. The panel of guests invited to open and close the event are Catherine Russell, Associate Professor of Cinema and author of the essay “Experimental Ethnography”, and J.P. Sniadecki, anthropologist and filmmaker whose films include “Demolition” (2008), “Foreign parts” (2010) and “People’s Park” (2012). 9-13 October 2013. AlhóndigaBilbao.

FLa bailarina vasca más aclamada y premiada de todos los tiempos, Lucía Lacarra, retorna al escenario del Auditorio del Palacio Euskalduna, como principal protagonista de la 9ª Gala ‘Los vascos y la danza’. Será la segunda ocasión en la que la artista guipuzcoana participe en el evento, tras su paso en la quinta edición del mismo en 2010. Lucía Lacarra y Marlon Dino (Bailarines Principales del Ballet de la Ópera de Munich) interpretarán tres pasos a dos, entre ellos el icónico “Cisne Blanco”, extraído del Acto 2º de “El lago de los cisnes”, con el que fueron aclamados en la Gala de Presentación de la Compañía Nacional del Danza Clásica, el pasado mes de marzo, en el Teatro Real de Madrid. Otro de los platos fuertes de la 9ª Gala ‘Los vascos y la danza’ es la participación del grupo de música rock We Are Standard, Premio Ojo Crítico de RNE a la mejor banda 2006 y Mejor Grupo Español en los MTV Awards 2009. En su época, Roland Petit con “Pink Floyd Ballet” (1972) y Maurice Béjart con “Ballet for life” (1997) sobre la música de Queen, ya realizaron un maridaje entre la música rock y el ballet. 18 de octubre. Organizada con motivo del centenario del fallecimiento del pintor Darío de Regoyos (Ribadesella, Asturias, 1857–Barcelona, 1913), la exposición reunirá un número aproximado de 140 obras, entre óleos, pasteles, acuarelas, dibujos y grabados, que van a permitir conocer las formas de expresión, los intereses y la evolución estética del artista. Presentará, además, documentación original (cartas, fotografías, catálogos de exposiciones…) con los propósitos de ampliar y poner al día los datos sobre su personalidad, sus relaciones profesionales y de amistad, y su perfil biográfico. A lo largo de su amplia producción, la pintura de Regoyos tuvo varias etapas. Un primer periodo belga, en el que aparecen retratos y paisajes y el interés por los efectos de luz. Le sigue lo que el propio Regoyos denominó la serie de “La España negra”, más filosófica y simbolista, y que muestra el lado más sombrío de la tradición española. Otro periodo está marcado por el uso de la técnica puntillista, que conoció gracias a su amistad con los pintores Seurat, Signac y Pissarro. La última, y más conocida, etapa es la impresionista, a la que la exposición prestará especial atención al reunir un importante número de óleos que permitirá al público aproximarse a las novedades que Regoyos aportó a la pintura de su época. FESTIVAL DE CINE ETNOGRÁFICO NAFA 2013 El NAFA FILM FESTIVAL es el festival de cine etnográfico más antiguo de Europa. Promovido por la Asociación nórdica de cine antropológico, es un festival itinerante que se celebra cada año en una ciudad europea. En su 33ª edición el festival recala en Bilbao, donde ofrecerá las 20 películas etnográficas más significativas del año. El NAFA film festival irá acompañado en 2013 del simposio “Carácter y destino: Reflexiones en torno al cine etnográfico y el documental contemporáneo”, en el que participantes de varios países debatirán sobre la situación y personalidad del cine contemporáneo de no ficción. LUCÍA LACARRA Lucía Lacarra, the Basque Country’s most highly acclaimed and awarded dancer of all time, will take the stage once again at the Palacio Euskalduna Auditorium, as featured ballerina at the 9th ‘Basques and Dance’ Gala. This will be the second time the Gipuzkoa-born ballerina joins the event after performing at the 5th edition in 2010. Lucía

Lacarra and Marlon Dino (both principal dancers with the Munich Opera) will dance three pas de deux, including the iconic “White Swan” from Act 2 of “Swan Lake”. The two dancers were hailed last March for their performance at the gala presentation of the Spanish National Dance Company at Madrid’s Teatro Real. Another highlight at the 9th ‘Basques and Dance’ Gala will be the participation of the rock band We Are Standard, winner of Spanish National Radio’s “Ojo Crítico” award for the best band in 2006 and Best Spanish Band at the MTV Awards in 2009. In their day, Roland Petit’s “Pink Floyd Ballet” (1972) and Maurice Béjart’s “Ballet for Life” (1997), the latter about the music of the band Queen, combined rock music and ballet. 18 October. Organized to mark the centenary of the death of painter Darío de Regoyos (Ribadesella, Asturias, 1857–Barcelona, 1913), the exhibition consists of some 140 works, including oil paintings, pastels, watercolours, drawings and engravings. The exhibit will allow visitors to gain an idea of the artist’s form of expression, interests and aesthetic development. Original documentation (letters, photographs, and exhibition catalogues) will also be on display to broaden and update our understanding of the artist’s personality, his professional contacts and personal friendships, and the general course of his life. A prolific artist, Regoyos went through a number of phases as a painter. Portraits, landscapes and an interest in the effects of light were prominent features of his early Belgian period. This phase was superseded by what Regoyos himself called “La España negra”, or Black Spain series, more philosophical and more appreciably Symbolist in nature, which echoes the more sombre side of Spanish tradition. Another period was marked by the use of the Pointillist technique, which he discovered through his friendship with French artists Seurat, Signac and Pissarro. The last, best-known stage of his career, which this exhibition concentrates on, was basically Impressionist. The oil paintings in The Impressionist Adventure give the public an opportunity to discover the original contribution Regoyos made to the painting of his time. Starting 7 October. “MASTER CLASS” DE TERRENCE MCNALLY María Callas, posiblemente la soprano más importante del siglo XX, impartió en los últimos años de su vida, cuando su voz declinó, cursos “master class” a futuros cantantes en la Juilliard School de Nueva York. El dramaturgo Terrence McNally estuvo presente en varias de ellas y, como resultado, escribió este texto donde se mezclan las enseñanzas de Callas a tres alumnos, con monólogos en los que la cantante reflexiona sobre su vida. La gran actriz argentina Norma Aleandro interpreta a María Callas y su interpretación es tan soberbia que el propio McNally la consideró como la mejor de todas las que se habían llevado a cabo en el mundo. Norma Aleandro estrenó la obra hace quince años en el Teatro Maipo de Buenos Aires, consiguiendo un éxito clamoroso. Su reposición actual nos ofrece la posibilidad de acercarnos a un mito de la lírica y al trabajo de una de las más grandes actrices del momento. 7, 8, 9 noviembre. Teatro Arriaga

La fiesta tiene su origen en la antigua costumbre de los caseros, arrendatarios de los caseríos de las áreas rurales, de acudir ese día a la capital a pagar las rentas anuales a los propietarios que, a menudo, vivían en la capital. Aprovechando el viaje, muchos aldeanos, traían sus mejores productos que encontraban una clientela propicia en los días de celebraciones de la navidad. Hoy en día aún, los puestos ofrecen capones, chorizos, morcillas, alubias, queso, bacalao, y las mejores frutas y verduras, cuyos productores participan además en un concurso que premia cada año a los mejores. La buena comida, la música y el espíritu alegre de los días navideños, congregan cada año a más de 100.000 personas en esta cita que comenzó siendo un mercado matinal y que ahora se prolonga hasta el anochecer. 21 de diciembre, Casco Viejo y Jardines de El Arenal

The origins of this festive event go back to the time when farmers who rented the land and farmhouses would go to the capital on this day to pay the landowners, who often lived in the city, their yearly rent. Taking advantage of the journey, many the farmers would bring their finest products to town, where it was easier to find customers out shopping for their holiday meals. Even today, the various stands still feature capons, chorizo, black pudding, beans, cheese, codfish and quality fruit and vegetables. Charlotte Rampling, the unforgettable star of “The Night Porter”, comes to the Arriaga Theatre. She appears in a show conceived and performed by the exquisite cellist, Sonia Wieder-Atherton. It is a show which combines the texts of Sylvia Plath with the cello music of Benjamin Britten. More specifically, the poems of “Ariel” and other recompilations recited in English, as well as extracts from her correspondence and diaries recited in French or English with subtitles in Spanish and Basque. 25 November. MASTER CLASS BY TERRENCE MCNALLY After losing her voice, María Callas, possibly the most influential soprano of the 20th century, taught master classes later in life to future singers at the Juilliard School of Music in New York. The playwright Terrence McNally sat in on many of them. The outcome was a play in which McNally combines Callas’ teachings to three students and monologues in which Callas looks back on her life. The talented Argentine actress Norma Aleandro plays María Callas in a performance so brilliant that McNally himself considers it one of the finest in the world. Norma Aleandro premiered the play fifteen years ago at Teatro Maipo in Buenos Aires to widespread critical acclaim. Her appearance at the Teatro Arriaga gives audiences a chance to look back on an opera legend and enjoy a brilliant performance by one of the greatest actresses of our time. 7, 8, 9 November. LOS TURISTAS DESEMBARCAN EN GETXO TOURISTS DISEMBARK IN GETXO

l 'Celebrity Infinity' y el 'Grand Mistral' trajeron alrededor de 4.500 turistas al puerto de Getxo, que se dedicaron a disfrutar de las grandes estrellas del territorio vasco, como el Guggenheim de Bilbao y la variada gastronomía de la parte vieja; la vecina San Sebastián, considerada una de las más bellas ciudades del mundo, o La Rioja, donde las virtudes de su tierra y vino son conocidas en el mundo entero. Algunos de los lugares a los que más pasajeros acudieron fueron Bermeo y Gernika, muchos atraídos por la idea de visitar San Juan de Gastelugatxe. Hicieron falta muchos autobuses para hacer llegar a su destino a los turistas ávidos de conocer otros lugares de la comarca. Así, otros optaron por la opción del taxi, para alegría de los taxistas, que gracias a este desembarco de visitantes, pudieron tener uno de sus

mejores días al volante sin parar de hacer carreras durante todo el día. La mayoría de los viajeros perteneciente al crucero Celebrity Infinity de 2.148 viajeros, eran ingleses y estadounidenses. Por su parte, el Grand Mistral descargó 1.392 pasajeros y cogió a otros 992 para poner rumbo a Lisboa. Los viajeros del Grand Mistral, con 1.392 pasajeros, eran en su mayoría de Euskadi y de distintas partes del Estado. Así, comienza un gran mes para los cruceros, ya que septiembre es considerado el más 'movido' para los mismos, puesto que es cuando más cruceros y turistas llegan a Getxo.

he 'Celebrity Infinity' and 'Grand Mistral' brought some 4,500 tourists to Getxo port who set about enjoying the major highlights of the Basque region: the Guggenheim and fabulous cuisine in the old quarter of Bilbao; neighbouring San Sebastian, considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in

the world, and La Rioja, famous the world over for the virtues of its soil and wine. Some of the places to receive most visits by these passengers were Bermeo and Gernika, many of whom were attracted by the idea of visiting San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. A fleet of buses was required to transport tourists eager to discover other parts of the province. Some therefore chose to go by taxi, to the delight of their drivers, who, thanks to the arrival of so many visitors, were able to enjoy one of their best days at the wheel as they ferried people to and fro. Most of the 2,148 passengers on the Celebrity Infinity were British and North American. The Gran Mistral, for its part, deposited 1,392 passengers and took another 992 on board as it set off for Lisbon. Most of the 1,392 passengers on the Gran Mistral were from the Basque Country and different parts of Spain.These two cruise liners marked the start of an important month, since September is considered to be the period when most liners and tourists come to Getxo.

EL BOSQUE DE HAYAS, UNA CITA CON EL OTOÑO

ada evoca tanto el otoño como la imagen de los árboles tiñendo el esplendor verde de sus hojas en una gama de colores que abarca desde el gris, al amarillo o al rojo intenso, antes de dejarlas caer mecidas por el viento hasta crear un tapiz mullido que cubre la tierra a sus pies. Vivir ese espectáculo es un placer que nos ayuda a sobreponernos al fin de los días largos del verano encontrando un aliciente indiscutiblemente gratificante. Y si podemos hacerlo sumergiéndonos en la majestuosidad de un robledal o un hayedo ese encuentro con la naturaleza se acercará mucho a una experiencia mágica y espiritual. El territorio de Bizkaia cuenta con una superficie arbolada que supera el 60% de su territorio. Los hayedos ocupan terrenos de montaña, preferiblemente en umbría y con altos grados de humedad atmosférica. Los bosques de hayas más importantes de Bizkaia se encuentran, dentro del Parque Natural de Gorbeia - en el macizo de Itxina y en el barranco de Zastegi-; en el monte Balgerri, perteneciente a la Sierra de Ordunte, en Las Encartaciones y en el Parque Natural de Urkiola, donde destaca el

bosque de las Peñas de Andasto y los situados sobre las laderas de los montes Urkiolagirre y Saibi. Además, en muchas de las rutas y paseos por distintos rincones de Bizkaia nos topamos con pequeños hayedos dispersos por todo el territorio que nos harán disfrutar de nuestro recorrido. Muchos de los bosques de hayas de Bizkaia son hayedos trasmochos. El trasmoche consiste en talar el árbol a una distancia del suelo de unos dos metros, seleccionando para ello los ejemplares más robustos. A partir de esa línea de corte, el árbol produce varias ramas nuevas, que a su vez son cortadas al cabo de 20 años, obteniendo así arboles bajos y de una copa muy abierta y ramificada que proporciona mucha madera, fácilmente accesible. Se modificando así la silueta natural de las hayas que, sin la intervención humana, presentan un tronco recto que alcanza los 30 o 40 metros de altura. Esta práctica, hoy en desuso, se realizaba por un lado para evitar la expropiación de los hayedos por parte de la corona, para utilizar la madera en la construcción naval, ya que los troncos cortos no servían para ese propósito. Por otro lado, estaba destinada a incrementar la obtención de madera

para las ferrerías y la producción de carbón vegetal. Eran necesarias 4 toneladas de madera de haya para obtener una tonelada de carbón vegetal, y se requerían 5 toneladas de este combustible para la producción de una tonelada de hierro, lo que sometió los bosques autóctonos de la cornisa cantábrica, y del País Vasco en particular, a un expolio inclemente. La producción de carbón vegetal se extinguió definitivamente en la década de los años cincuenta del siglo pasado y afortunadamente hoy todavía podemos disfrutar del encanto de sumergirnos en un hayedo impregnado por la niebla en otoño. Desde Orozko , Zeanuri o Altube podemos acceder a los majestuosos hayedos de Elorritxugana, Otzarreta , Sintzieta o Urkabustaitz en el Gorbea. Desde Karranza, en Las Encartaciones, las laderas de los montes de Ordunte albergan el bosque del Balgerri, a los pies del monte del mismo nombre, el hayedo más extenso de Vizcaya. Desde el parque Natural de Urkiola distintos recorridos nos conducen a los hayedos de Saibi y Urkiolagirre. Cualquiera de ellos nos garantiza un espectáculo inolvidable y es una de las citas ineludibles del otoño.

othing quite evokes autumn more than the leaves on the trees as they change from verdant green to grey, yellow or scarlet red, before the wind scatters them, creating a soft blanket on the ground. The autumn show of colours gives us something to look forward to and helps us say goodbye to the long summer days. And what better way of enjoying the show in the midst of nature than to take a walk in an oak or beech forest, an almost magical and spiritual experience. Over 60% of Bizkaia is covered in forest. Beech trees grow in mountainous terrain, preferably in shady and highly humid areas. The most significant beech forests in Bizkaia can be found in Gorbeia Natural Park - in the Itxina massif and the Zastegi ravine - on Mount Balgerri in the Sierra de Ordunte, in Las Encartaciones, and in Urkiola Natural Park at Pe単as de Andasto and on the slopes of mounts Urkiolagirre and Saibi. There are also a number of smaller beech groves scattered

throughout Bizkaia which visitors can enjoy along the many scenic routes and walks. Many of the beech woods in Bizkaia are pollarded. The traditional process of pollarding involved selecting the heartiest trees and cutting then back about two metres from the ground. At the cutting point, the tree would then grow several new branches which were in turn cut back every 20 years. The result was a lower tree with a lot of wide-spreading branches, thus providing a continuous and more accessible supply of wood. In its natural state, without human intervention, the trunks grow straight and tall reaching a height of 30 to 40 metres. Now obsolete, the practice of pollarding was done for two reasons. One was to keep the branches short so that the beech trees would not be expropriated by the Spanish Crown for use in the ship building industry. Another reason was to feed the demand for wood and charcoal needed to fuel the iron foundries. Four tonnes of beech wood were needed to make one

tonne of charcoal, and it took five tonnes of charcoal to produce one tonne of iron. This meant that the native beech forests of the Cantabrian coast, and the Basque Country in particular, were routinely plundered. Charcoal ultimately ceased to be produced in the 1950s and fortunately we can still have the pleasure today of walking in a beech forest shrouded in autumn mist. From the towns of Orozko, Zeanuri or Altube we can visit the majestic beech forests of Elorritxugana, Otzarreta, Sintzieta and Urkabustaitz in Gorbeia Natural Park. The most extensive beech forest in Bizkaia can be reached from Karranza in Las Encartaciones. The forest of Balgerri sits at the foot of Mt Balgerri in the Ordunte mountain range. From Urkiola Natural Park there are a number of routes to the beech woods of Saibi and Urkiolagirre. Any of them promise an unforgettable show of changing autumn colours.

THE NBA TO STRUT ITS STUFF WITH BILBAO-BIZKAIA

Association (NBA), the Bilbao City Council and the Regional Council of Bizkaia. The efforts are geared to raising the international profile of Bilbao-Bizkaia, drawing in visitors from the United States and Europe, and to garner greater interest in basketball.

Thousands of people will get the chance to see close-up one of legendary teams of the NBA face the 'men in black' at the BEC's Bizkaia Arena. The event will be one of the NBA's eight preseason games played in eight cities worldwide.

In September 2012, Bilbao also hosted a successful stop in the NBA 3X Tour, sponsored by BBVA. Throughout the 'NBA weekend' from 4-6 October, similar events will also be staged.

On Sunday, October 6th, the Philadelphia 76ers will play a friendly game against Uxue Bilbao Basket, thanks to an agreement signed by the NBA, Euroleague Basketball, BBVA, the Regional Council of Bizkaia and the Bilbao City Council.

In Europe, the Oklahoma City Thunder will play in Istanbul before facing the 76ers in Manchester. This is a historic opportunity to see an incredible sporting event live, an event that will be followed around the world via the various NBA platforms. The show hosted at the BEC this autumn is yet another part of the agreement reached in January 2011 between the National Basketball

A good example of this strategy was the presence of Bilbao and Bizkaia at the NBA House in London in summer 2012. The NBA House was a free fan experience and hospitality venue held at Covent Garden's Jubilee Hall in London.

In addition to the thousands of people with tickets to the game at the BEC, everyone is invited to visit the various exhibits and competitions held at different venues in Bilbao. This major event is a lead-up to the 2014 FIBA host cities for the first phase of the 24-team tournament. Philadelphia 76ers are one of the oldest franchises in the NBA. They began playing as the Syracuse Nationals in 1936. In 1963 they left Syracuse and moved to Philadelphia.

There they changed their name to the 76ers as a tribute to the year in which the Declaration of Independence was signed. In its long history, the Sixers have witnessed some incredible seasons. As the Nationals, the team won its first NBA Championship in the 1954-55 season. Later, as the 76ers, the team took the title in the 1966-67 season against the Golden State Warriors, and in 1982-83 went on to beat the Los Angeles Lakers. The 76ers t-shirt has been worn by some of the most legendary figures in the history of the NBA, including Wilt Chamberlain, Julius Erwing, Moses Malone, Charles Barkley and Allen Iverson. Among the owners of the Sixers, which celebrate 50 seasons with the NBA this year, are the actor Will Smith and his wife. 2013 All Star, Jrue Holiday, currently plays on the team. The Philadelphia 76ers compete in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference, together with the Boston Celtics, the Brooklyn Nets, the New York Knicks and the Toronto Raptors. The three division winners of the two conferences are mathematically qualified for the playoffs.

Los Philadelphia 76ers juegan ese día un partido amistoso contra el Uxue Bilbao Basket, gracias al acuerdo alcanzado por la NBA y Euroleague Basketball con BBVA, Diputación Foral de Bizkaia y Ayuntamiento de Bilbao. Miles de personas tienen así la ocasión de disfrutar contemplando de cerca cómo uno de los equipos legendarios de la NBA se enfrenta a los hombres de negro en el Bizkaia Arena del BEC. El encuentro es uno de los ocho partidos de pretemporada en todo el mundo, que en Europa también incluirá a Oklahoma City Thunder, equipo que jugará en Estambul antes de medirse a los 76ers en Manchester. Una oportunidad histórica para vivir en directo un completo y auténtico espectáculo que tiene proyección global a través de todas las plataformas de NBA. SANTIMAMIÑE, HOGAR MILENARIO PARA EL SER HUMANO

escasos kilómetros de Gernika, en el paradisíaco entorno natural de Urdaibai, que la UNESCO declaró Reserva de la Biosfera en 1984, al pie del imponente monte Ereñozar, se encuentra la cueva de Santimamiñe, dominando un amplio paisaje con diversos ecosistemas: encinar cantábrico, campiña y estuario. No es de extrañar que en este entorno de gran riqueza ecológica y enorme belleza, la cueva de Santimamiñe ofreciera al, desde el período Magdaleniense hasta el tiempo de los romanos, un hábitat ideal que atesora la huella de más de 14.000 años de ocupación ininterrumpida por el ser humano. Las 22.000 hectáreas que abarca la Reserva de Urdaibaia, en el estuario que se abre en la desembocadura de la Ría de Gernika está ocupado en un 70% por bosque, y en sus diferentes biotipos viven o pasan animales de todo tipo (Urdaibai es zona de paso y descanso de aves entre Europa y África). La cueva fue descubierta en 1916 por unos jóvenes de la zona. La boca de la gruta, a unos 150 metros sobre el actual nivel del mar, se orienta al Sur-Sudeste, y da paso a un vestíbulo al que llega la luz exterior. En esta zona se conserva un interesantísimo relleno arqueológico con una secuencia cultural que va desde los inicios del Paleolítico superior hasta la época romana. En su interior atesora pinturas rupestres que datan del periodo Magdaleniense del Paleolítico Superior (14.000 a.C.). En ellas aparecen representados diferentes animales, como bisontes, caballos, ciervos, cabras y osos pardos. La cueva posee, además, numerosas formaciones de estalactitas y estalagmitas de gran belleza. Las figuras se distribuyen en tres ámbitos de la cueva: el salón previo a la cámara de pinturas, el santuario y la sala nueva de pinturas. En total, son casi medio centenar de figuras, pintadas al carbón o incisas, atribuidas a las etapas medias del período Magdaleniense, con una datación aproximada entre 14 500 y 12 000 años de antigüedad. Las primeras excavaciones arqueológicas se desarrollaron principalmente entre 1918 y 1962 por parte de un equipo compuesto por Telesforo Aranzadi, José Miguel de Barandiaran y E. Eguren. Desde 2004 hasta la actualidad, un equipo multidisciplinar compuesto por más de veinte especialistas trabaja en una nueva fase de excavación en Santimamiñe,

dentro de un proyecto de revalorización promovido por la Diputación Foral de Bizkaia. Aunque durante décadas, se han podido recorrer sus galerías y contemplar sus pinturas y grabados rupestres, actualmente, después de 90 años de visitas, desde 2006 la cueva esta clausurada al público, para evitar que las altas cantidades de CO2 producidas por el tránsito de usuarios deterioraren el conjunto de las pinturas , declaradas patrimonio de la Humanidad por la Unesco en julio de 2008. No obstante, mediante una presentación renovada, en parte física y en parte virtual, el público tiene la oportunidad de conocer y disfrutar del conjunto de una forma sostenible y responsable. En el punto de acogida, junto a la ermita de Santimamiñe, se ofrece a los visitantes una presentación. A mitad del ascenso que conduce a la cueva, el guía explica las características geológicas y paisajísticas del entorno del Urdaibai en la que está enclavada. Ya en la entrada se puede contemplar el yacimiento del vestíbulo ilustrado por las explicaciones del guía. De vuelta al centro de interpretación, una especie de antifaz virtual nos permite recorrer la cueva en una recreación en 3D. Además, en octubre, con motivo de las Jornadas Europeas de Patrimonio Intervenido, se realizarán Talleres Familiares bajo el título Pintando en Santimamiñe, en los que niños y mayores crearan las pinturas y herramientas artísticas con las que los habitantes prehistóricos dejaron su huella artística en este rincón.

n the beautiful setting of Urdaibai, not far from the town of Guernica, is Santimamiñe Cave, declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1984. The cave sits at the foot of Mount Ereñozar, dominating a landscape of diverse ecosystems including holm oak forests, open countryside and estuary. In this area of great beauty and ecological diversity, it is no wonder that for over 14,000 years the cave at Santimamiñe provided the ideal habitat for permanent human occupation from the Magdalenian period until Roman times. Some 70% of the more than 54,000 acres of the Urdaibai Nature Reserve, located at the mouth of the Gernika estuary, is covered in forest. Several different types of animals make their permanent or temporary homes here (Urdaibai is a stopping point

for migratory birds travelling between Europe and Africa). The cave was discovered by chance in 1916 by some local children. The entrance to the cave, about 150 metres above sea level, is south-west facing and leads to a vestibule that is illuminated by daylight. Fascinating archaeological deposits in this area have revealed abundant relics of cultural activity spanning from the Upper Palaeolithic to Roman times. Paintings discovered in the cave correspond to the Magdalenian period of the Upper Palaeolithic (14,000 BC). The paintings depict different types of animals such as bison, horses, deer, goats and brown bears. The cave also has beautiful stalactite and stalagmite formations. The animal figures depicted are located in three different parts of the cave, known as the Ante-chamber, the Chamber, and the New Hall. The nearly fifty representations, illustrated with charcoal or engra-

ved in the rock, are attributed to the middle Magdalenian period, dating from approximately 14,500 to 12,000 years ago. The first archaeological excavations were carried out between 1918 and 1962 by Telesforo Aranzadi, José Miguel de Barandiaran and E. Eguren. Since 2004 a multi-disciplinary team made up of over 20 experts has been working on a new stage of excavation at Santimamiñe as part of a project promoted by the Regional Council of Bizkaia. For decades, people were allowed to visit the galleries and admire the cave paintings and engravings. However, after 90 years of visits, in 2006 the cave was closed to the public to prevent further deterioration from the carbon dioxide produced by visitors. In June 2008 the paintings were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With a new display, partly

physical and partly virtual, the public can now enjoy the caves in a sustainable and responsible manner. The entrance is at the chapel of Santimamiñe, where visitors are shown a presentation of the cave. Halfway up to the cave, the guide will talk about the geology of Urdaibai and the surrounding landscape. At the entrance to the cave, visitors will see the actual cave site while the guide provides information about the cave and the artwork inside. Back at the interpretation centre, visitors put on a virtual mask designed to re-create the cave in 3D. In October, as part of the European Heritage Days, Painting at Santimamiñe workshops will be offered. Kids and their families will be invited to make paintings and create the kind of tools once used here by prehistoric cave dwellers.

FROM GORLIZ TO ARMINZA, A WALK ALONG THE SEASIDE

he sea offers a stunning display of changing the colours and tones. Every sea and every coast, just like the landscapes in the interior, has its own special personality, and to a large extent, it is the sea that forges the character of the coastal towns. The Cantabrian is a powerful, sometimes even aggressive sea, more green than blue, that has created generations of strong, and in many cases, legendary Basque seamen over the course of history. From high atop the sea cliffs along the Basque coast this dramatic landscape can be contemplated from a number of places along the coast of Bizkaia. Feel the thrill of the high seas but feet safely planted on solid ground! A coastal walk from the town of Gorliz to the tiny harbour of Armina offers the perfect outing – especially in autumn, when temperatures are still pleasantly warm and comfortable, and the southerly winds and rough seas put on a spectacular show, in contrast with the green Basque countryside. The walk takes about two hours. The first part passes through 6000 year-old petrified dunes at Gorliz beach – which have fortunately been resto-

red to their former glory – and then climbs up to the top of Cabo Billano. This natural lookout offers spectacular views of Plenzia bay to one side and the beaches we left behind to the other. Offshore is the tiny dragon-shaped island of Billano and just below us, nestled at the base of the cliff, is a small hidden cove. A little further on, stands the white 20-metre Billano lighthouse, one of the most modern lighthouses on the Iberian Peninsula. Near this point are the remains of a coastal defence battery, including a cannon and bunkers. From the lighthouse, if you want to extend the walk a little, you can take a path to the left follo-

wing the cliffs and visit the ruins of the fort of Azkorriaga, built in the 18th century to protect the coast from pirate attacks. The path continues along the green hillsides dotted with solitary holm oaks. At one time the countryside was covered with dense oak forests, but much of wood was used to fuel the iron foundries and build ships. Heading down toward Arminza, you now walk through eucalyptus forests that blanket the coastline. Soon you'll see Arminza harbour, the perfect place for a bite to eat after your walk.

Desde el faro, si las fuerzas nos animan a prolongar un poco el paseo podemos desviarnos por un sendero a la izquierda, al borde del acantilado, para visitar las ruinas del fortín de Azkorriaga, erigido en el siglo XVIII para proteger la costa contra los ataques corsarios.

ELORRIO, AN INLAND TREASURE

Nestled in the extraordinary natural beauty of some of Bizkaia's highest mountains Intxorta (797m), Udalaitz (1092m), Memaia, Amitar, Santa Mañazar and Erdella (all over 600m) - sits Elorrio, boasting the largest number of protected historical monuments in Bizkaia, its old town declared a HistoricArtistic landmark in 1964. The Zumelegi river, which runs through the town, has its source in Mt Udalaitz. Elorrio was founded in 1356 by Prince Don Tello in the vicinity of the church of San Agustín de Etxebarría. The town was built to provide shelter and protection for the population dispersed in the nearby mountains around the churches of San Adrián de Argiñeta, Santo Tomás de Mendraka, San Bartolomé de Miota and Nuestra Señora de Gazeta, and left vulnerable to attacks by neighbouring Guipuzkoans. San Agustin de Etxebarria had a vote in the Assembly of Gerediaga as part of the district of Durango. In 1630, it was annexed by Elorrio and incorporated in the Assembly of Gernika. Situated in southwest Bizkaia just 40 km from Bilbao, bordering on the provinces of Alava and Gipuzkoa, Elorrio is home to an extraordinary collection of historic monuments. Stately homes line the narrow streets of the once walled-in medieval city and other parts of town. Many of the elegant buildings in Elorrio date back to the 17th and 18th centuries, the town's period of economic splendour, when a number of families displayed the fortunes they had made in the Americas by building lavish houses back home. The town hall is located on Gernikako Arbola plaza, next to the elegant Purísima Concepción basilica. Near the plaza is a beautiful manor home called Arezpakotxaga and next to it, the gate of Don Tello, the only gate left standing of the original six gates that once guarded the walled city. The baroque Marqués de Tola mansion, the Santa Ana Monastery and the church of San Agustín are also well worth a visit. The city of Elorrio has put together a series of guided tours under the name Zure bidean, Elorrio (Ellorrio, on

your way). The tours are designed to guide visitors through some of the city's highlights. Palacios (stately homes and mansions) is a tour of Elorrio's monumental old town, where visitors learn about the history of the various homes and their owners and how both have changed over the centuries. Del monte Udalaitz brota el rio Zumelegi, que atraviesa el municipio.Elorrio fue fundada en 1356 por el infante Don Tello, en terrenos de la anteiglesia de San Agustín de Etxebarria, para dar cobijo y amparo a los pobladores del entorno, que hasta entonces vivían desparramados por las laderas de los montes vecinos, en torno a ermitas como San Adrián de Argiñeta, Sto. Tomás de Mendraka, San Bartolomé de Miota o Ntra. Sra. de Gazeta, y que eran presa de los ataques y robos que recibían de sus vecinos guipuzcoanos. San Agustin de Etxebarria tenía asiento y voto en las juntas de Gerediaga de la merindad de Durango hasta que fue anexionada por la villa de Elorrio en 1630 por lo que ésta salió de la merindad y se incorporó al asiento número 13 que ocupaba Elorrio en las Juntas de Gernika.

Facing the chapel of San Adrián, Argiñeta, with its 23 burial sites, is one of the most important funerary monuments in Euskadi. In the first week of October a festival is held known as ErrebonbillosAccording to ancient oral tradition, filled with magic and legend, the "fiesta de los Errebonbillos" traces its roots to a curious event. In 1571 the Amandarro brothers retuned from the Battle of Lepanto. It just so happened that the procession for the Virgin of Rosario was taking place at the time.

As they entered the town, guns miraculously went off to celebrate their return home. That is the more romantic version of story. However, a more likely story is connected to the ancient tradition when military processions were held every year to check the number of guns and men available in case of war. A company of 'riflemen' made up of local boys heads to the streets in the morning and afternoon to fire their guns at specific places in town. In the evening a procession takes place in honour of the Virgin of Rosario, winding up in the main town square with a traditional Basque aurresku dance performed as a tribute.

Muy cerca, junto al palacio Arezpakotxaga, se alza la puerta de Don Tello, la única que queda en pie de las seis que tenía la antigua muralla que rodeada la villa. El palacio barroco del Marqués de Tola, el Monasterio de Santa Ana y la iglesia de San Agustín son otros monumentos que merecen ser visitados.

Situada frente a la ermita de San Adrián, se trata de uno de los monumentos funerarios más importantes de Euskadi, ya que cuenta con 23 tumbas. En la primera semana de octubre se celebra la fiesta de Errebonbillos. Según la tradición oral más antigua, repleta de magia y de leyenda, la fiesta de los tiene su origen en un curioso suceso. En 1571 los hermanos Amandarro volvían de luchar en la batalla de Lepanto, y entrando en el pueblo, al estar haciendo la procesión de la Virgen del Rosario dispararon los arcabuces para agradecer su vuelta a casa.

Para ello, el Ayuntamiento de Elorrio ha organizado una serie de visitas guiadas bajo el lema Zure bidean ( en tu camino), Elorrio, que proponen al visitante distintos recorridos para conocer los tesoros que guarda la villa. Bajo el título Palacios, se ofrece un paseo guiado por el bello casco monumental de Elorrio que relata, entre palacio y palacio, su creación y los cambios que el tiempo ha provocado en su fisonomía y sus gentes. Los secretos de la Basílica describe brevemente los aspectos más relevantes de la arquitectura exterior el interior del la Iglesia de la Purísima Concepción y descubre, además, sus secretos

mejor guardados. Finalmente Berrio-Otxoa, su vida, sus lugares nos acercan a los escenarios de la vida del Santo patrono de Bizkaia. Las rutas se pueden descargar en los dispositivos electrónicos personales y el ayuntamiento ofrece audioguías gratuitas que ilustran a los visitantes en su recorrido. Pero no solo el núcleo monumental de la villa merece una visita. También son de destacar sus barrios: Aidazua, Aldape, Aramiño, Arauneta, Berrio, Berriozabaleta, Gazeta, Gaztañeta, Iguria, Leiz, Lekeriketa, Mendraka, Miñota, San Agustin y Zenita. Fuera también del casco urbano, contemplaremos espléndidos parajes

Es esta una explicación de su origen un tanto romántico. Sin embargo, la teoría que más se acerca a la realidad es la que hace referencia a la antigua tradición de los alardes que antiguamente se hacían todos los años y su objetivo no era otro que el de comprobar cuantas armas y cuantos hombres estaban disponibles en caso de una posible guerra. La compañía de fusileros formada por los jóvenes del pueblo sale por la mañana y por la tarde y realiza descargas de fusilería en lugares determinados del pueblo. Por la noche se lleva a cabo una procesión con la virgen del Rosario, terminando con un baile, un aurresku en la plaza Mayor.

PUERTOS PESQUEROS, PUEBLOS CON CARÁCTER

os vascos han vivido vinculados al mar y a todas las actividades relacionadas con él desde tiempo inmemorial. Euskadi ha sido cuna de grandes marinos cuyos nombres jalonan la historia de las grandes gestas de la navegación.

La pesca es también una actividad milenaria en el País Vasco y, paralelamente, la construcción naval ha tenido una relevancia singular desde la edad media. A los astilleros vascos se deben muchos de los grandes avances tecnológicos que permitieron las grandes gestas transoceánicas y el desarrollo del comercio con las Indias. Existe constancia de que ya en el en el siglo XIII existían cofradías de pescadores que entonces como ahora regulaban las actividades de la pesca y su comercialización y las condiciones de trabajo de sus integrantes. También hoy las cofradías de pescadores están constituidas por los armadores y por los trabajadores que participan de la actividad pesquera y en su ámbito se establecen las normas y se dilucidan los intereses

del sector. A lo largo de la costa vizcaína, al abrigo de los estuarios naturales, en la desembocadura de los ríos que jalonan la costa o de las oquedades que guarda su escarpado perfil, surgieron los puertos y municipios que han vivido esencialmente del mar hasta hace bien poco.

FISHING PORTS, TOWNS WITH CHARACTER

he Basque people have been linked to the sea and seafaring activities since time immemorial. Euskadi has been the birthplace of great sailors whose names and deeds have marked the course of history. Fishing also has a very long history in the Basque Country, coupled with the important role local shipbuilding played in the Middle Ages. Many of the major advances in marine technology can be attributed to Basque shipbuilders, paving the way for transatlantic feats and the development of trade with 'the Indies'. Documentation shows that as far back as the 13th century fishermen's guilds were already

in existence. Much like today, the guilds were set up to regulate fishing activities, trade and working conditions for their members. Both then and now, guild members are shipowners and other people working in the fishing industry who join together to establish norms and protect industry interests. Over the centuries ports and towns have emerged up and down the coast of Bizkaia in the natural estuaries, mouths of the rivers, and the protected coves nestled in the rocky shoreline. Until very recently, the people of these communities have thrived on the bounties of the sea. Some of the smaller fishing ports, such as Zierbena, Plentzia, Armintza and Mundaka, home to wooden shallops and sha-

llow-water vessels, Lekeitio, Ondarroa and Bermeo, where larger tuna boats dock, still have all the flavour and character of their seafaring past. Long gone are the days when Basque sailors plied the waters of Newfoundland in search of whales. Today Bizkaia's 150-vessel fishing fleet – 104 shallow-water boats, 24 deep-sea vessels and 25 tuna boats – keep the fishing industry alive, and the ports full of colour and charm. It goes without saying that one of the attractions of Basque fishing villages is the wealth of products from the sea, intertwined with a rich gastronomic tradition. ilbao's urban renewal, giving back to the public what only two decades ago were industrial brownfields and regenerating the river and riverbanks – all of this has taken the people of Bilbao off their couches and into to streets. And it's not just to salute the city's renewal, which has indeed garnered well-deserved international acclaim, but to make use of the promenades, gardens and bike paths. Foot soldiers head out every day to the banks of the river for the pleasure of walking, with the growing awareness of the health benefits of daily physical activity.

La transformación urbana de Bilbao, la recuperación de espacios hasta hace poco más de dos décadas ocupados por usos industriales para uso urbano, la regeneración de la ría y sus orillas, han levantado a los bilbaínos de sus sofás y los han sacado a la calle. Y no se han levantado para dedicarle una ovación, que podría ser, a juzgar por el reconocimiento internacional que este proceso ha merecido, sino para ocupar sus paseos, sus jardines, y sus bidegorris (rutas para bicicletas). Una infantería a pie sale a diario a pasear por las dos orillas de la ría, por simple placer y, al mismo tiempo, porque cada vez somos más conscientes de lo importante que es dedicar un rato cada día al ejercicio físico para mantener un equilibrio vital saludable. Cada cual sale a conquistar su propio objetivo que, a menudo se mide en el número de puentes contabilizados a lo largo del paseo, de los 9 que jalonan la ría desde Euskalduna hasta San Antón. Temprano por la mañana, sale la vanguardia de ese ejército inofensivo de paseantes y corredores. En estas filas se agrupan algunos de los

deportistas más entrenados que exhiben y cuidan su forma física antes de incorporarse a sus obligaciones laborales. Según avanza la mañana se van incorporando las personas con niños a su cargo y el cuerpo de veteranos, a los que el tiempo de ocio que les ofrece la jubilación les permite apropiarse de los paseos durante el horario laboral. Al caer la tarde, cada cual libre ya de sus obligaciones, los espacios de deporte y juegos de los parques y los paseos reúnen ya al grueso de las tropas de esta infantería ciudadana. También hay espacio para los cuerpos mecanizados de patinadores y ciclistas. Existen 11 rutas que conectan los barrios de Bilbao mediante bidegorris, las vías reservadas a bicicletas y patinadores. Y para las tropas más en forma, los montes que encuadran la ciudad, permiten realizar excursiones de media jornada iniciando el paseo desde la propia puerta de casa. La subida al Pagasarri o a Artxanda son una actividad casi cotidiana y muy popular entre los bilbaínos y, porque no, entre quienes nos visitan y quieren disfrutar de una vista panorámica de la ciudad desde lo alto.

Everyone has his or her own personal goal, often measured by the number of bridges they pass en route. A total of nine bridges span the river between Euskalduna and San Antón. Early in the morning the advance guard of this peaceful army of walkers and runners takes to the streets. Their ranks include top-notch athletes who strut their chiselled physiques before heading to the office. As the morning wears on, caregivers and their charges appear, together with the veterans corps, taking advantage of their leisure time to enjoy the outdoors during business hours. In the late afternoon and evening when everyone is free from their obligations, the sports areas, playgrounds and promenades come alive with the rest of the troops. There are also spaces for the mechanized corps of cyclists and skaters. Eleven routes, locally known as bidegorris, reserved for bicycles and skates, connect Bilbao's various neighbourhoods. And the troops in top physical shape can head out their front doors on a half-day excursion in the mountains surrounding the city. Bilbao residents are particularly fond of heading up to Pagasarri or Artxanda, both of which are perfect destinations for visitors to enjoy panoramic views of the city.

BILBAO EPICENTRO DE LA MÚSICA EN BIME

Bizkaia International Music Experience BIME se celebra en Bilbao del 19 al 23 de noviembre. Se trata de un encuentro internacional de profesionales ligados al sector de la música promovido por la Diputación Foral de Bizkaia y que combinará las actividades dirigidas a estos profesionales con otras destinadas al gran público. Presentaciones de discos, congresos, convenciones, debates y actuaciones musicales de primer nivel convivirán en este evento, que reunirá aproximadamente a 18.000 personas, 2.000 de ellas ligadas profesionalmente al mundo de la música, y generará un impacto económico en Bizkaia de alrededor de 4 millones de euros.

Música, industria, tendencias y gran público confluyen en este encuentro, organizado en colaboración con la promotora musical Last Tour International y que tiene lugar en los pabellones 1, 3 y 5 de BEC. Un evento que, como ha subrayado el Diputado de Promoción Económica, Imanol Pradales, nace con voca-

ción de continuidad para convertir Bizkaia en un referente en el panorama cultural y musical europeo y para impulsar también a todo el sector vinculado al mundo de la música en nuestro Territorio. BIME proporciona a los profesionales de diferentes lugares del mundo que trabajan en el ámbito de la música un espacio para el intercambio de ideas y para tratar de crear nuevas vías de negocio. ilbao will host the Bizkaia International Music Experience (BIME) from 19 to 23 November. An international gathering of professionals from the music world, BIME combines activities specifically geared towards music industry professionals and others for the general public. Record presentations, congresses, debates, conventions and first-rate live performances all come together at this event, which is expected to draw in around 18,000 people, including 2,000 music professionals.

Imanol Pradales, representative for Economic Advancement in Bizkaia, describes BIME as an event that strives to make Bizkaia a real reference in the European cultural and musical panorama and to promote all sectors of the music industry in the Basque Country.

BIME is promoted by the Regional Council Bizkaia and is projected to generate approximately four million euros for the region.

Meeting rooms will be available to attending professionals and for speed meeting sessions, congresses and business conventions. The event will also attract cutting-edge new technologies and video game companies, as well as professionals in communication and marketing.

Music, business, new tendencies and a large public turnout all converge in this encounter, organized in collaboration with the music promoter Last Tour International. The event will take place in halls 1, 3 and 5 of the Bilbao Exhibition Centre (BEC).

BIME offers music professionals from around the world a forum for exchanging ideas and creating new business opportunities in the changing landscape of the music industry. Activities include record, book and festival presentations, and conferences, debates and roundtables.

BIBLIOTECA DE LA UNIVERSIDAD DE DEUSTO UN FARO DEL SABER

n las últimas décadas Bilbao ha vivido un proceso de transformación que ha permitido recuperar espacios industriales obsoletos, regenerar entornos degradados y devolver a sus ciudadanos una urbe regenerada, cuyo proceso de revitalización se ha convertido en un modelo de referencia internacional. Abandoibarra, la parcela de 348,000m² que se extiende a lo largo de la orilla izquierda de la ría del Nervión, es el paradigma y el detonante de esa transformación. Ocupada hasta hace poco más de dos décadas por astilleros, espacios industriales y actividades portuarias, se ha convertido en un entorno amable, de zonas ajardinadas, en el que se sitúan algunos de los equipamientos y edificios emblemáticos del nuevo Bilbao. Y aquí, junto al Museo Guggenheim Bilbao de Frank O. Gehry que ha actuado como tractor de este proceso de transformación, rodeado por edificios emblemáticos como el nuevo Paraninfo de la Universidad del País Vasco del arquitecto Alvaro Siza y la Torre Iberdrola de César Pelli, se levanta la nueva Biblioteca de la Universidad de Deusto, un equipamiento diseñado por el arquitecto nava-

rro Rafael Moneo. La Biblioteca, enlaza con la Universidad de Deusto, edificada en 1886, a través de la pasarela Pedro Arrupe, que conecta ambos lados de la ría. Según las propias palabras de Moneo, se trata de “una arquitectura legible desde lejos, como un volumen monolítico, monocromático, neutro, capaz de diluir la luminosidad del titanio del Guggenheim e integrarse en el universo verde del parque sin traumas. De cerca, en cambio, el edificio desvela una complejidad de texturas y matices gracias al empleo de un ladrillo de vidrio especial”. Este Centro de Recursos para el Aprendizaje y la Investigación, responde a un nuevo concepto de biblioteca universitaria que alberga y fomenta no sólo la investigación, sino la formación y el aprendizaje, y se plantea como lugar para la formación continua y punto de encuentro universitario y cultural. El edificio, con una superficie útil de 22.000 m², se distribuye en 10 plantas, cinco subterráneas y otras tantas sobre la superficie del terreno. Un edificio eminentemente funcional, de líneas rectas y sencillas. Su fachada está cubierta de bloques de vidrio permeables a la luz natural que penetra durante el día desde el exterior y emana por la noche desde

el interior, convirtiéndose en un faro, alegoría de su misión de enriquecer y expandir el conocimiento. La fachada interna está compuesta por vidrio serigrafiado y muros de hormigón, separada de la exterior por una cámara de 60cm que alberga la iluminación. La Biblioteca de la Universidad de Deusto fue fundada en 1886 y atesora cerca de 1.000.000 de volúmenes, incluyendo más de 10.000 títulos de publicaciones periódicas, lo que la convierte en la mayor biblioteca del País Vasco. Entre sus fondos destacan 60.000 libros publicados antes de 1830, así como 21 incunables. El nuevo edificio puede albergar 900.000 volúmenes en unas condiciones perfectas para su conservación. Las nuevas instalaciones ofrecen además salas de exposiciones, biblioteca digital, mediateca, cafetería, comedor, salas de lectura y cabinas tanto individuales como colectivas para investigadores. El último piso está destinado a la Deusto Bussines School. El CRAI es un centro abierto a todo aquel que lo desee y pone a disposición del usurario la tecnología más avanzada como ordenadores, completas bases de datos, dispositivos multimedia, información en soporte digital, etc.

UNIVERSITY OF DEUSTO LIBRARY A BEACON OF KNOWLEDGE

n recent decades Bilbao has experienced a process of transformation that has seen the renewal of abandoned industrial areas and the redevelopment of brownfield sites into fresh new spaces. Bilbao's process of revitalisation is internationally regarded as a model of urban renewal. Abandoibarra, the 348,000m² parcel of land that stretches along the left bank of the Nervión River, is the paradigm and springboard for this transformation. The space which just over two decades ago was home to shipyards, industrial sites and port activities, is now an aesthetically pleasing environment with green spaces and some of the most emblematic facilities and buildings of the new Bilbao. The driving force behind the process of transformation is the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, designed by architect Frank Gehry. Together with other iconic buildings, including the new central hall of the University of the Basque Country by architect Alvaro Siza and the Iberdrola Tower by César Pelli, stands the new University of Deusto library, designed by Navarra-born architect Rafael Moneo. The library is connected to Deusto University, built in 1886, by the Pedro Arrupe footbridge, which links the two banks of the river. In the words of Moneo, the library is "a building that has its own identity from a distance, a monolithic, monochrome, neutral volume that does not compete with the titanium dazzle of the Guggenheim and is capable of seamlessly integrating itself into the green universe of the park. In contrast, from close up, the glass blocks used in the building's design reveal a complex combination of textures and nuances. "This centre for learning and research resources represents a new concept in university libraries, a venue not only for the promotion of research, but also a place for learning and training, a home for continuing education and a hub for university and culture. The building covers an area of 22,000 m² laid out over 10 storeys, with five underground and five floors above ground level. It is an eminently functional building with simple, straight lines. The facade is covered with glass blocks which allow natural light to permeate the interior during the day and emanate

light outward at night. Transformed into a beacon, the library is a translucent allegory of its mission to enrich and expand knowledge. The interior facade is made of screen-printed glass and concrete, separated from the outside layer by a 60 cm chamber for the lighting. The University of Deusto library was originally founded in 1886. The collection is a treasure trove of nearly 1,000,000 volumes, including over 10,000 periodical titles, making it the largest library in the Basque Country. The collection also boasts 60,000 books published before 1830 and 21 incunabula. The new building has space for 900,000 volumes and provides the best possible environment for preservation and conservation. This new facility also features exhibition space, a digital library, a multimedia library, cafeteria, dining room, reading rooms and booths for both individual researchers and groups. The uppermost floor is set aside for the Deusto Business School. The new library is open to everyone, offering users the latest technology, computers, databases, multimedia devices, digital information, software, etc.

BAD es un festival de Teatro actual y Danza contemporánea, centrado en las nuevas tendencias escénicas internacionales, nacionales y locales, con especial atención a la programación de autores vivos contemporáneos, a la vanguardia y a la interdisciplinaridad de las artes escénicas con otras artes (música, vídeo, performance, etc .).

From October 23 to November 3 Bilbao will host the 15th edition of BAD, the Bilbao Festival of Contemporary Theatre and Dance. Bilbao Antzerki eta Dantza (Bilbao Theatre and Dance) will hold its annual celebration of cutting-edge performing arts, promoted by the Bilbao Department of Culture and Education. The festival features theatre premieres, dance and multi-discipline performances by both local and international artists. This year's festival will feature a total of 19 companies performing on different stages throughout the city, including Bilbao Eszena in Santutxu, the former La Merced church, La Alhóndiga, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and Muelle 3, among others. BAD is a festival of contemporary theatre and dance, focusing on new performance trends at the international, national and local levels. The festival's main emphasis is on living contemporary authors, avant-garde theatre, and on combining performing arts with other artistic disciplines (music, video, etc.). The 15th edition of BAD presents a total of 19 Basque, Spanish and international companies. The programme features 12 world premieres, two of them co-productions made especially for the festival, two of them premiering in Spain for the first time and another two are firsts in the Basque Country. As in previous years, BAD will dedicate much of its programming to work by local artists in the area of contemporary performing arts. This year the festival is proud to present young artists and companies, such as Sleepwalk Collective, El Conde de Torrefiel, La Tristura, Macarena Recuerda, Catherine Froment and Pablo Fidalgo. The festival is one of the many programmes

sponsored by the city designed to promote the performing arts. In addition to BAD, the Department of Culture will make Bilbao Eszena (centre for performance resources) available to amateurs and semi-professionals. Located in Santutxu, the centre offers free rehearsal space, work and meeting rooms, a performing arts documentation centre and training courses. The initiative is complemented with Bilboko Zirkuitua, a programme designed to promote the work of amateur companies in an effort to bring their plays and dance creations to the stages of municipal centres and other public venues. The experience also aims to attract new audiences to theatre and dance in neighbourhoods around the city. The Bilbao Department of Culture's efforts to promote theatre and dance also include an artist residency programme, designed to support research and innovation in the area of local performing arts by helping artists to develop their projects. The programme connects artists and researchers with sources of funding, installations, technical resources and partnerships with professional artists.

La vanguardia de las artes escénicas se da cita en este encuentro anual, Bilbao Antzerki eta Dantza (Bilbao Teatro y Danza), promovido por el Area de Cultura y Educación del Ayuntamiento de Bilbao, que en su programa incluye, en muchos casos, estrenos teatrales, espectáculos de danza o montajes multidisciplinares, a cargo de artistas locales e internacionales. La XV edición de BAD presenta un total de 19 compañías vascas, nacionales e internacionales, con 12 estrenos absolutos, dos de ellos coproducidos por el Festival, dos estrenos internacionales a nivel del Estado y otros dos que el público podrá ver por vez primera en Euskadi. Como ya viene siendo habitual, BAD reserva un espacio importante al trabajo que compañías y artistas locales desarrollan en el ámbito de las artes escénicas contemporáneas. Este año destaca también la presencia de artistas y compañías jóvenes como Sleepwalk Collective, El Conde de Torrefiel, La Tristura, Macarena Recuerda, Catherine Froment o Pablo Fidalgo, entre otros. El Festival forma parte del conjunto de programas que desarrolla el ayuntamiento para fomentar y promover las artes escénicas. Además del certamen BAD, el Area de cultura pone a disposición de los grupos amateurs y semiprofesionales. El Centro de Recursos Escénicos BILBAOESZENA, ubicado en Santutxu, que ofrece locales gratuitos de ensayo, salas de trabajo y reunión, un centro de documentación de artes escénicas, cursos de formación. La iniciativa se complementa con el programa BILBOKO ZIRKUITUA que impulsa y promociona el trabajo de las compañías aficionadas para que puedan exhibir sus creaciones de teatro y danza en los Centros Municipales de Distrito y otros equipamientos públicos, captando así también nuevos públicos para las artes escénicas en los barrios de la ciudad. EL CASCO VIEJO, EL PRIMER LATIDO THE OLD TOWN, THE FIRST HEARTBEAT

odos los pueblos y ciudades esconden multitud de rincones atractivos y llenos de encanto que, si sus ciudadanos saben preservar, dotan de carácter a la ciudad y definen la esencia de su fisonomía porque son los elementos que las distinguen y por ello constituyen el alma de cada lugar. Pero el origen, el punto de partida de cada asentamiento humano, de cada pueblo o ciudad, donde se produce su primer latido, guarda el código genético de ese lugar, el inicio de su historia y, en muchos casos, la propia razón de su existencia.

Y ese primer latido de Bilbao tuvo lugar en las siete calles, que discurre en paralelo, partiendo de la orilla derecha del Nervión, desde a la iglesia de San Antón. Junto a la iglesia de San Antón se encuentra el Mercado de la Ribera, un edificio de estilo Art Decó, que hoy, a medio camino en su proceso de rehabilitación, mantiene toda su vitalidad y es el mayor mercado cubierto de Europa. Desde el Mercado de la Ribera cualquiera de las siete calles, nos llevan a descubrir la Catedral de Santiago y su plaza, o la Iglesia de los Santos Juanes, junto a la que se aloja el Museo Arqueológico y Etnográfico. A pocos metros se abre la Plaza Nueva, la expansión de las siete calles en el siglo XVIII, que es un rectángulo acotado por pasajes laterales, bajo cuyos pórticos se amparan multitud de tabernas donde saborear unos pintxos en un entorno lleno de vitalidad. Saliendo de la Plaza Nueva, si levantamos la vista al recorrer cualquiera de las calles del Casco Viejo, toparemos con las fachadas de las casas con miradores y los escudos de las casas señoriales de piedra que son testimonio de la fortuna que alcanzaron los comerciantes de la villa. Aunque la ciudad se decidió finalmente a cruzar a la otra orilla de la ría desde el parque del Arenal, que pone límite al Casco Viejo luciendo entre sus monumentos el teatro Arriaga y la Iglesia de San Nicolás, para su expansión en los albores del siglo XX, el Casco Viejo sigue siendo hoy un referente comercial de la ciudad en el que conviven los comercios tradicionales, llenos de encanto, con las tiendas y cadenas comerciales más actuales.

But it is the origin, the starting point of every settlement, of every town and city, where the first heartbeat can be heard. This is where the town’s genetic code is kept, the beginning of its history and, in many cases, its very raison d'etre.

As you leave Plaza Nueva via any of the streets in the Old Town, make sure you look up at the houses. Many of the facades are decorated with beautifully glazed balconies, and a number of solid stone houses feature impressive family coats of arms, bearing testimony to the success of many Bilbao merchants.

In Bilbao that first heartbeat emerged in the seven streets that run parallel from the right bank of the Nervión River to the church of San Antón. Next to San Antón is the Mercado de la Ribera, the largest covered market in Europe, currently undergoing a major project to refurbish it back to its original Art Deco splendour. From the Mercado de la Ribera any of the seven streets lead to Santiago Cathedral and plaza, or to the church of Santos Juanes. Next to Santos Juanes

Just a few steps from here is Plaza Nueva, built in the 18th century as an expansion to the seven original streets. Under the arches surrounding the rectangular square are several lively taverns serving delicious local tapas, known here as pintxos.

The city eventually decided to expand to the other side of the river, with Arenal Park marking the border of the Old Town. Here, the church of San Nicolás was constructed in the late 18th century and the Arriaga Theatre opened its doors a little more than a century later. Today the Old Town is known for its excellent shopping, where classic shop windows intermingle with trendy boutiques and modern chain stores.

IGOR YEBRA: PASIÓN, ESFUERZO Y TRABAJO

omo cabía esperar Igor Yebra tiene una presencia imponente, y no sólo por su planta erguida y su complexión atlética sino porque su figura emana carisma. Su mirada es penetrante y cálida a la vez. Este bailarín bilbaíno puso en pie al público ruso interpretando al protagonista de Iván el Terrible de Prokofiev, en la que fue la primera ocasión en la que un extranjero encarnaba este papel en el Teatro del Kremlin. Una sonrisa casi permanente inunda la expresión de este bilbaíno considerado como una de los mejores bailarines clásicos del mundo. Generoso y apasionado en sus respuestas convierte nuestro encuentro con él en un rato acogedor. Igor Yebra nos recibe en un estudio de su Escuela de Danza en Bilbao. BBT-Estamos en su escuela, ¿hay una buena cantera? Igor Yebra- Si, hay gente jovencita muy prometedora y otros ya han empezado a despuntar. Llevamos ya siete años con la escuela y hay algunos niños y niñas que ya se han abierto camino fuera. Hay una chica que está en Hamburgo, con la compañía de John Neumeier, otra acaba de terminar su formación en la escuela del Bolsoi en Moscú, un chico que se va ahora a la escuela del Royal Ballet a hacer los últimos años, alguna en San Francisco y unos cuantos más en Londres o en Madrid, todos ellos son alumnos y alumnas que van a terminar su formación fuera. Eso quiere decir que el trabajo va dando ya sus frutos. La pena es que no podemos terminar aquí su formación porque eso restaría espacio a la gente de menor edad ya que el centro no dispone de todo el espacio que quisiera y priorizamos a los más pequeños. Pero estamos haciendo algo que para mí era muy importante y es que esos primeros 5 o 6 años de formación, hasta los 15 o 17 años, pudieran ser de calidad y sin padecer el desarraigo que supone tener que irse fuera a una edad temprana. Esperamos seguir creciendo para tener la oportunidad de completar la formación porque la capacidad la tenemos, solo nos falta el espacio. BBT-¿Le hace esto recordar sus inicios, porque usted se tuvo que ir muy joven, solo, a Madrid? Igor Yebra- Si, porque entonces era aún más difícil que ahora. De ahí surgió la creación de la escuela, del afán de proporcionar a las familias un lugar en el que formar a sus hijos sin que se tengan que ir fuera hasta que sean más maduros psicológicamente y estén más formados como bailarines. BBT- ¿Cómo recuerda aquel período de su vida, cuando fue solo a Madrid con 13 años? Igor Yebra- Yo tuve la suerte, y digo suerte porque yo siempre busco el aspecto positivo de las cosas, de que aunque empecé a bailar tarde, con 13 años, cuando comencé tenía

muy claro lo que quería. Por eso, mi rutina en Madrid consistía en jornadas de trabajo que empezaban a las 10 de la mañana y se prolongaban hasta las 9 de la noche. Además, como era chico y alto, cuando ingresé en la escuela, Víctor Ullate formó su compañía, de manera que yo realicé mis estudios ya dentro de la compañía. De 10:00h. a 12:30h. hacía la clase con la compañía, de 12:30h. a 17:30h. ensayaba con la compañía y después, hasta las nueve de la noche me quedaba a trabajar en la escuela, porque me faltaba formación, para alcanzar el nivel. Mi jornada era tan intensa, de lunes a sábado, que cuando llegaba el domingo no me quedaban ganas para nada más. Quizá eso me salvó de perderme, siendo tan joven, en una gran ciudad como Madrid. Ahora cundo lo pienso, me doy cuenta de que fue una locura para mí y para mi familia, pero yo era consciente de que ellos estaban haciendo un gran esfuerzo económico y de que no estaba allí para jugar, que no podía desperdiciar el gran sacrificio que estaban haciendo. Yo tenía muy claro lo que quería y lo veo también aquí. Niñas que tienen 9 o 10 años y tienen claro lo que quieren, aunque atraviesen algún momento malo. Pero para eso estamos nosotros, para darles el respaldo que necesitan.

BBT- Y es que, además, ésta es una vocación muy individual, en la que no te ampara ni te empuja la pertenencia a un equipo. Igor Yebra- Si, yo siempre recuerdo algo que me dijo una persona muy especial. Fue Antonio Gala quien me dijo en una ocasión - y luego me lo escribió en una carta para que no lo olvidara, cuando atravesaba un momento algo difícil, a los 20 años- “Lo que tú tienes no es un trabajo, es una vocación”. Y es cierto. A partir de que lo asumes y de que te das cuenta de que es una manera de vivir, hay tres cosas que son imprescindibles para afrontar tu camino, en este ámbito o en otro, y que yo trato de inculcar a los alumnos de la escuela porque son aplicables a todos los aspectos de la vida: pasión, constancia y trabajo. Combina esos tres ingredientes en cualquier cosa que hagas en la vida y llegarás, algunos más lejos que otros, pero llegues donde llegues te sentirás orgulloso de lo que has conseguido. BBT- ¿Cómo se interesó por la danza? porque creo que en principio lo que le gustaba era el fútbol Igor Yebra- Bueno yo tuve la suerte de vivir en un entorno en el que había libros, se escuchaba música clásica, acudíamos a espectáculos de danza cuando había ocasión aun-

cado y yo quiere seguir adelante. Espero Llegar a anciano pensando en lo que haré mañana y además ha habido muchísimos grandes momentos. Ya que estamos hoy aquí, uno de ellos fue el haber bailado en Fiestas de Bilbao, en la calle, con un público de pie, a la una de la mañana, ante casi 10.000 personas, con un público entregado durante hora y media, en las condiciones opuestas al ámbito habitual del ballet. Fue muy gratificante.

que no fuera muy frecuente. Así que eso no me era algo ajeno aunque, claro, yo era el menor de tres hermanos y mi hermana era la bailarina y yo era el trasto y siempre estaba con una pelota porque me encantaba el fútbol y el baloncesto. Hasta que vi un espectáculo que me fascinó y quise profundizar y probarlo, pero ya había mimbres detrás de aquello, no surge de la noche a la mañana. Por eso es importante el entorno que ofrecemos a los niños. BBT- Históricamente, a pesar de que los bailarines además de artistas son atletas con facultades extraordinarias, de fuerza, flexibilidad y agilidad, mucho más completos que la mayoría de los deportistas, siempre ha existido una cierto prejuicio social. ¿Se va superando? Igor Yebra- Desde el momento en que todavía hoy me haces esa pregunta es porque aun no se ha superado. Y es una pregunta que me haces tú y me hace todo el mundo. Vivimos en un país en el que existen ese tipo de prejuicios. BBT- Pero, ¿Es sólo aquí? Igor Yebra- No, es en muchos sitios. Pero en otros Países como Francia o Italia, o Rusia, da exactamente igual. Y por supuesto que hay bailarines homosexuales como los hay heterosexuales, tal y como pasa en todos los ámbitos de la vida. Quizá es porque en el ballet siempre se ha vivido con naturalidad mientras que en otros ámbitos profesionales está oculto, se esconde. Es un problema cultural, de mentalidad. Los niños no tienen prejuicios, somos los adultos quienes se los inculcamos y les hacemos sentir que jugar a fútbol es estupendo pero que no vemos con tan buenos ojos que sean bailarines. No es asunto de nadie que a mí me encanten las mujeres, ni tengo por qué estar proclamándolo, ni que a otro le gusten los hombres. Es cuestión de tener una mentalidad abierta, como la del entorno en el que yo crecí, porque fíjate lo que ha sucedido en Francia. En ese país los bailarines no han sufrido los prejuicios y sin

embargo se ha producido un enorme conflicto social con la aprobación de la ley que regula el matrimonio homosexual. Algo que yo nunca hubiera imaginado. ¿Cuándo va a salir el futbolista o el deportista de élite que asuma abiertamente su homosexualidad?. Pasarán muchos años todavía. BBT- Los expertos le consideran un danseur noble, ¿Qué significa? Igor Yebra- Significa que eres un bailarín noble, en el sentido aristócrata. Se refiere a bailarines elegantes, con aptitudes para el repertorio de los grandes ballets clásicos. Por decirlo de algún modo sería un bailarín aristocrático. A mí me encantaba ver bailar a Fred Astaire. Me gustaba naturalmente Gene Kelly, que era un gran bailarín, pero Fred Astaire, con su sola presencia ya transmitía, antes de empezar a bailar; o Antonio Gades dentro de la danza clásica española también lo tenía, ambos eran danseur noble. A mí me produce cierto pudor que me lo digan. Yo estoy muy contento con lo que he conseguido, con poder bailar y vivir mi pasión. Cuando empecé mi carrera nunca lo hice esperando convertirme en un danseur noble ni nada parecido. Y te lo digo porque vivimos en un momento en que la televisión está plagada de programas en que los jóvenes buscan el reconocimiento vacío de la fama como objetivo, sin nada detrás y es una gran equivocación. Los niños no quieren ser cantantes quieren ser David Bisbal y es algo muy peligroso, y es responsabilidad nuestra, no de los niños. Estamos creando una burbuja, como la inmobiliaria, que cuando estalla no deja nada detrás. BBT- ¿Cuál ha sido el mejor momento, el más inolvidable de su carrera? Quizá es difícil elegir uno…. Igor Yebra- Es imposible. Ha habido muchos y según me encuentre, recuerdo uno u otro. Pero además no soy de ese tipo de persona. Lo que ha pasado ya, lo aparco y miro adelante, porque si no lo aparco significaría que me he estan-

BBT- Estamos en Bilbao y estamos en su escuela. Resulta entrañable, que una figura como usted, que viaja por todo el mundo y pasa la mayor parte de su tiempo fuera haya abierto su escuela aquí, y este en el mes de julio impartiendo clases a los niños bilbaínos. Igor Yebra- Para mi mis raíces siempre han sido muy importantes. Para mi Bilbao ha sido muy importante. Más allá de nacionalismos o consideraciones de otro tipo, Bilbao ha sido mi casa y eso que no me ha regalado nada. Me ha regalado una sola cosa por la que estaré eternamente agradecido y es el cariño de la gente. Tengo el cariño y el respeto, que creo que me lo he “trabajado”, y eso para mí es lo más importante. Yo amo esta ciudad y abrí la escuela aquí porque no quería que los jóvenes tuvieran que irse fuera tan temprano como tuve que hacer yo y que nunca volvieran, perdiendo ese talento con ello. Si un día me sintiera como un Quijote, me marcharía. Pero por el momento pago mis impuestos sin vivir aquí, cosa que no hacen otros muchos y me siento de aquí. BBT- La suya es una vocación muy exigente y que requiere un gran esfuerzo y una enorme capacidad de sacrificio, quizá como todas las personas que trabajan al servicio de una gran vocación. Pero un científico, un músico o un director de cine puede llegar a los 80 años trabajando y sin embargo el vuestro es un esfuerzo con fecha de caducidad relativamente temprana. ¿no es una crueldad? Igor Yebra- Si, en cierto modo es cruel. Por eso, para mí la danza, dentro de las artes - las cuales adoro - es un compendio de las demás formas de expresión artística. Nosotros esculpimos con nuestro cuerpo y debemos esculpir nuestro cuerpo, pintamos sobre el escenario con los trazos de nuestro movimiento, interpretamos a través de la música y al mismo tiempo tenemos que contar historias y llegar al público como lo hacen los libros. Ya ves, he mencionado todas las artes. La crueldad más grande de todo ello es que además es perecedero porque nace y muere en el mismo momento en el que bailamos y ni las nuevas tecnologías o la televisión son capaces de atrapar la magia que se produce sobre el escenario y se vive en un teatro. Es como una flor que nace y se marchita pero no hay un espectáculo más bello. No es como un cuadro que se puede atesorar aunque pueda estropearse. La danza es la propia naturaleza, lo más cercano a la creación. Es un gran precio a pagar pero es un gran privilegio.

IGOR YEBRA: PASSION, PERSISTENCE AND HARD WORK

As one might expect, Igor Yebra has an incredible presence about him – and it’s only his posture and sculpted physique, but also his charisma. His eyes are penetrating and warm. In his first performance abroad, the Bilbao-born dancer brought Russian audiences to their feet in the title role in Prokofiev’s Ivan the Terrible, ballet at the Kremlin Theatre. An almost non-stop smile graces the face of one of the finest classical ballet dancers in the world. His generous passion filled answers made this interview a thoroughly delightful experience. Igor Yebra welcomed us at a studio in the Bilbao School of Dance.

don or Madrid. All of them are students from our school who plan to continue their ballet studies in other countries. That means that our work here is a success. The bad part is that they can't continue to train here because that would take away space for the younger dancers. Our school doesn't have nearly as much space as we'd like and we want to focus on younger children. But we're doing something that's really important to me – making sure that the first five or six years of training, up until the age of 15 or 17, are of the highest quality while at the same time not forcing kids to go abroad at such a young age. We hope the school will keep growing, so that we can offer more advanced training. We have the capability – it’s the space we’re lacking.

BBT -We’re at your school. Does it turn out some good dancers? Igor Yebra - Yes there are some young dancers who show promise, and others who have already begun to stand out. The school has been in operation for seven years and some youngsters have already gone abroad. One girl is dancing with the Hamburg Ballet under John Neumeier, and another one of our students just finished training at the Bolshoi School in Moscow. One boy is going to the Royal Ballet to finish up his last years of study, a few are going to San Francisco and several others are going to Lon-

BBT - Does this remind you of your early years? You had to go to Madrid at a very young age. Igor Yebra - Yes, I did. It was even harder back then than it is now. That's where the idea of creating a school came from. We wanted to provide families with the place where their children could study ballet until they were psychologically old enough to go abroad and get further ballet training abroad. BBT - What do you remember about that period in your life, when you went to Madrid alone at the age of 13 Igor Yebra - I was lucky - I say lucky because I

always look at the positive side. Even though I started ballet late, at the age of 13, I knew what I wanted from the very start. My routine in Madrid consisted of days that began at ten in the morning and ended at nine at night. And because I was tall, I was able to study at the Víctor Ullate school when he created his company. That meant that I could train in classical ballet as part of a company. From 10 to 12:30 I took class with the company; from 12:30 to 5:30, I rehearsed with the company; and then I stayed until 9pm to work on my technique to catch up with the rest. My workdays were so intense, from Monday to Saturday, that when Sunday came around I didn't feel like doing anything. Maybe that's what kept me from losing my way, being so young in such a big city as Madrid. When I think about it now, I realise that it was an insane thing for me and for my family, but I knew it was a financial strain on them and that I wasn't there to play around, so I couldn't waste the huge sacrifice they were making. I knew exactly what I wanted to do and I'm seeing the same thing here – 9 or 10-yearold girls who know what they want, even when they go through the tough spells. But that's why we're here, to give them the support they need. BBT - And this is a very solitary pursuit, there’s no team to keep you going, like in some sports.

Igor Yebra - Yes. I’ll always remember something a very special person once told me – and wrote it down in a letter so I wouldn’t forget – when I was 20 and going through a particularly hard time. It was Antonio Gala, who said, “What you have isn’t a job, it’s a calling.”And he was right. Once you've accepted that and realise that it's a way of life, there are three things you have to accept – in ballet and in another areas. We try to instil these things in the students at the school because they apply to all walks of life: passion, persistence and hard work. If you add all of these ingredients to whatever you do in life, you'll succeed. Some will go further than others, but however far you get, you'll be proud of what you've done. BBT - How did you become interested in dance? I understand that at first you liked football. Igor Yebra - I was lucky enough to live in an environment where there were books. We listened to classical music and went to see dance shows every once in a while. So, all of that wasn’t foreign to me. I was the youngest of three kids. My sister was a ballerina and I was a nuisance. I always had a ball with me because I loved football and basketball. Then one day I saw a dance performance that fascinated me and I wanted to learn more and give it a try. But it's not something that comes overnight. That's why what we offer the kids here is important. BBT - In addition to being artists, dancers are also extraordinarily strong, flexible, agile and much more fit than most athletes. But historically there has always been a certain amount of social stigma. Are we overcoming this prejudice? Igor Yebra - If you’re asking me this question right now, it’s because we still haven't gotten over it. It's a question that you and everyone else asks me. We live in a country where these types of prejudices still exist. BBT - But, only here? Igor Yebra - No, it happens a lot of places. But in other countries like France or Italy, or Russia, it doesn't matter. Of course there are homosexual and heterosexual ballet dancers, just like in everything else. Maybe it's because in the world of ballet, it's always been considered natural, while in other professions, it’s kept hidden. It's a cultural problem, a matter of mentality. Children don't have prejudices. It's the adults that instil prejudice in children. We make them feel that playing football is fantastic but we frown down at them for wanting to become

ballet dancers. It's really nobody's business that I love women, and I shouldn't have to be telling the world about it, nor should any other male ballet dancer have to tell people they prefer men. It's a matter of keeping an open mind, like the people around me when I was growing up. Look what happened in France. Ballet dancers there haven’t had to deal with this prejudice, but there was an enormous social backlash when it came to passing the law on gay marriage – something I never would've imagined. When will a professional football player or elite athlete openly announce he’s gay? I think it will take several years. BBT- The experts consider you a danseur noble. What does that mean? Igor Yebra - It means you are a noble dancer in the aristocratic sense. It refers to elegant dancers who can play leading roles in the classical ballet repertory. In a sense, we might say that a danseur noble is an aristocratic dancer. I loved watching Fred Astaire dance. Of course I also loved Gene Kelly, who was a wonderful dancer, but Fred Astaire had a certain presence even before he’d begin to dance; in classical Spanish dance Antonio Gades also had it; both of them were danseur noble. I feel a bit embarrassed when people say that about me. I'm delighted with what I've achieved, to be able to dance and fulfill my passion. When I started out in my career, I never expected to become a danseur noble or anything like that. You know, we’re living in a time when television is littered with programmes showing young people with aspirations of empty fame, with nothing behind it. It’s a big mistake. Kids don't want to become singers, they want to be David Bisbal, and that's really dangerous. It's our responsibility as adults, not players. We're creating a bubble, like the housing bubble, that leaves nothing behind it when it bursts. BBT - What was your finest moment, the most unforgettable time in your career, or is it hard to choose just one? Igor Yebra - It’s impossible. There have been so many, and depending on how I feel at any given time, I remember one or another. But I'm really not that kind of person. What's past is past. I put it aside and then set my sights to the future, because if I don't, it means I become stuck and what I want is to look ahead. I hope to grow old thinking about what I'll do tomorrow. Besides, there have been so many wonderful moments. Now that we're sitting here today, I can tell you that one of them was dancing at

the Bilbao fiestas, being able to dance in the street at one o'clock in the morning with the audience right there. Almost 10,000 people watching me for an hour and a half in a setting that was the complete opposite of the typical ballet venue. It was really gratifying. BBT - So, here we are, in Bilbao and at your school. It’s admirable that a person like youself, who spends most of his life traveling around the world, would open a school here and spend the month of July giving classes to the children of Bilbao. Igor Yebra - My roots here have always meant a lot to me. Bilbao has been very important to me. Beyond the business of nationalism or considerations of other types, Bilbao was my home. It gave me one thing for which I will always be grateful, and that is the warmth of the people. I have their love and respect, and I think I’ve “earned” it, that to me is the most important thing. I love this city and I opened the school here because I didn't want kids to have to go as far away from home as I did at such an early age, and never come back, and in that way, lose all our local talent. If one day I felt like a Don Quixote, I'd leave. But for the time being, I pay my taxes and don't even live here, something not too many people do, and I feel like this is home. BBT - Your career is very demanding and requires great effort and sacrifice. Maybe that’s what happens to people whose work is a vocation, a calling. But a scientist, a musician or a film director can work until he’s 80, while your job has a relatively short expiration date. Isn't that a bit cruel? Igor Yebra - Yes, in a certain sense it is cruel. That's why dance for me as an art – and I love all types of art – is a compendium of all other forms of artistic expression. We sculpt with our bodies and sculpt our own bodies; we paint the stage using our movements as brushstrokes; we act through the music and at the same time we have to tell a story and reach the audience in the same way as a book. So there you have it, I've mentioned all the arts. The cruellest thing of all is that it is also short lived, because it is born and dies while we're actually dancing. Neither new technologies nor television can capture the magic of the theatre and the stage. It's like a flower that blossoms and then withers, but there’s no other show as beautiful. It’s not like a painting that can be stored, even though it can become damaged. Dance is nature, the closest thing to creation. It’s a high price to pay but is a true privilege.

l Arkeologi Museoa de Bizkaia, ubicado en el casco Viejo de Bilbao, ofrece al visitante un viaje en el tiempo para descubrir las diferentes comunidades que han habitado nuestro territorio a lo largo de la historia y conocer sus formas de vida y de muerte. Para hacer este largo recorrido debemos seguir las huellas que han dejado nuestros antepasados; huellas que, en ocasiones, son de gran belleza (como el canto decorado con una cierva de hace 27.000 años que constituye uno de los primeros testimonios artísticos de Bizkaia o el vaso de vidrio del siglo VI encontrado en el interior de la sepultura de un guerrero) y, en la mayor parte de los casos, objetos que se utilizaron, pero que con el tiempo se abandonaron rotos en pedazos (como los fragmentos de recipientes, las herramientas oxidadas o las monedas perdidas que se pueden ver en la exposición). Pero independientemente de su apariencia, todos estos materiales nos cuentan

miles de pequeñas historias protagonizadas por aquellas personas que los diseñaron y aprovecharon para subsistir, para trabajar, para comer, para defenderse o para rezar y nos acercan a aquellos hombres y mujeres que hicieron posible lo que hoy somos.

ACTIVIDADES Para facilitar este viaje al pasado el Arkeologi Museoa ofrece visitas guiadas gratuitas, talleres, conferencias y organiza salidas para conocer los lugares y yacimientos arqueológicos donde se han localizado los materiales que constituyen las huellas de nuestros antepasados. Con estas actividades pretendemos convertir el Arkeologi Museoa en un espacio abierto, ameno y participativo en el que los visitantes puedan encontrar propuestas atractivas que permitan facilitar las relaciones familiares y de amistad, conocer nuestro patrimonio cultural y sensibilizar de la necesidad de protegerlo y conservarlo ya que forma parte de nuestra memoria histórica, que debemos transmitir a las generaciones futuras.

Además el Arkeologi Museoa es el centro de depósito de todos los materiales arqueológicos recuperados en excavaciones arqueológicas de Bizkaia y por tanto uno de los archivos de la memoria histórica del territorio. Por ello dispone de laboratorios de restauración, salas de investigación y almacenes, abiertos a cuantos investigadores quieran profundizar en la Historia de Bizkaia.

ARKEOLOGI MUSEOA. BIZKAIA MUSEUM OF ARCHAEOLOGY A VOYAGE IN TIME

he Arkeologi Museoa of Bizkaia, located in Bilbao’s old quarter, offers visitors a voyage in time to discover the different communities who have lived in our region down through the years and to learn how they lived and died. To make this long journey, we must follow the tracks left by our forebears; tracks that are often of heart-stopping beauty (such as the stone decorated with a hind dating back 27,000 years that constitutes one of the first examples of art in Bizkaia, or the 6th century glass found inside a warrior’s grave) and, in the majority of cases, objects that were used but abandoned, broken into pieces (such as the fragments of vessels, rusted tools or lost coins that we can see in the exhibition). But no matter what their condition, all of these materials tell us thousands of little stories about the people who designed them and used them to survive, work, eat, to defend themselves or to pray. They bring us closer to those men and women who made it possible for us to be what we are today. To facilitate this voyage into the past, the Arkeologi Museoa offers free guided tours, workshops and conferences and organises outings to the places and archaeological sites where the materials constituting the tracks of our forebears were found. With these activities, our aim is to convert the Arkeologi Museoa into an open, pleasant and participatory space where visitors can find attractive proposals for families and groups of friends, a place to learn more about our cultural heritage and raise awareness on the need to protect and conserve it as part of our historical memory, to ensure that it can be passed down to future generations.

izkaia Tour.- ¿Qué aspectos atraen más al público japonés de nuestra gastronomía: mercados, sociedades, grandes chefs? June Yamaguchi.- Se puede decir que es un complejo de todo...es que Euskadi ofrece desde un pintxo de los bares hasta un plato más puntero de panorama gastronómico internacional. Igual de rico y con un altísimo nivel. También la cultura culinaria arraigada en el pueblo vasco, como se puede observar en las costumbres como el “poteo” o reunirse en las sociedades gastronómicas nos llama mucha atención. Mira, yo denomino a estas sociedades como guardería de los maridos a la hora de explicarlo a mis clientes. Y las japonesas me dicen que les gusta, y que necesitarían una para ellas... Por supuesto que los caballeros del sol naciente también gozan de estar en la cocina, dejando a sus mujeres en la mesa y participan del acto sagrado que es cocinar entre chicos. De todas formas están encantados de conocer una cultura muy diferente de la suya. B.T .-¿Existen similitudes entre ambas gastronomías?

B.T .-¿Sus platos favoritos? J.Y.- Lo tengo clarísimo: arroz con almejas y kokotxas rebozadas. Serían los últimos que pidiera si estuviera en el corredor de muerte de EE.UU. B.T .-Por favor, recomiéndenos un menú japonés y otro vasco para este otoño J.Y.- De mi cocina, Samma asado, un tipo de pescado azul. Su llegada a la mesa nos anuncia la llegada del otoño que tanto lo apreciamos. De la cocina vasca, quizás, algún plato de hongo...o algún guiso de legumbre para sentir el famoso goxo-goxo...

J.Y.- Si, por lo que he visto y he aprendido, tengo la conclusión de que en ambas cocinas hay una cierta similitud. Respetan la materia prima y su sabor original, no se añaden condimentos en exceso. También su apuesta por la frescura de la materia y de los productos locales es algo significativo. B.T .-¿Qué aspectos destacaría de nuestra gastronomía? J.Y.- Desde luego, el amplio abanico que se ofrece... Desde la cocina tradicional hasta la cocina de vanguardia de exquisito nivel.

B.T .-¿Cómo empezó a interesarse por nuestra gastronomía? J.Y.- Ja ja ja, ¡como vivo en la capital de la gastronomía, es lógico que me interese! B.T .-¿Cuál es la parte que más le agrada de su trabajo? J.Y.- Por supuesto, ver la cara de felicidad al probar un plato que yo haya recomendado con mi toda alma. Es un verdadero placer acertar el gusto de los clientes después de tan sólo una breve conversación...

B.T.- Asesora y organiza visitas gastronómicas de japoneses a Euskadi y también gestiona información para medios de su país. ¿Se puede decir que es usted un puente culinario entre las dos culturas? J.Y.- Precisamente es lo que quiero lograr...Yo adoro y admiro al País Vasco, en todos sentidos, no sólo la gastronomía, sino también el tesoro de este país, que es la gente que habita. Ya sabes de sobra que una comida cocinada sin cariño, ni una mesa sin los seres queridos no tiene mucho sentido. O sea que me gustaría ser quien trasmita a mi gente lo maravilloso de lo que conozco y como. También quisiera ser una perfecta anfitriona para que los clientes se sientan como en casa y puedan llevarse un recuerdo inolvidable a través de su paladar.

izkaia Tour.- What aspects of our gastronomy are most attractive to the Japanese public: markets, societies, the great chefs? June Yamaguchi.- I’d say a mixture of everything...the point is that in Euskadi you find everything from a pintxo in the bars to some of the most cutting-edge dishes in the international gastronomy scene. All equally delicious and of an extremely high level. Also the deep-rooted culinary culture in the Basque people, as we can see from customs like the mini pub crawls known as “poteo” or gatherings in gastronomic societies is something that surprises us enormously. Look, I call these societies crèches for husbands when I explain them to my clients. And the Japanese women tell me they like them, that they’d like to have their own versions! Of course the men from the land of the rising sun also love to be in the kitchen, leaving their women at the table and participating in the sacred art of cooking with the boys! At any rate, they are delighted to discover a culture very different from their own.

B.T. Are there similarities between the two cuisines? J.Y.- Yes, from what I’ve seen and learned, I’ve come to the conclusion that there is a certain amount of similarity between the two. They both respect the raw material and original flavour and don’t over-condiment. Also for their liking of fresh ingredients and local produce. B.T. What aspects of our gastronomy would you underline? J.Y.- No doubt about it: rice with clams and cod ‘cheeks’ in batter. Those are the dishes I would order for my last meal if I was on America’s death row. B.T. Please recommend a Japanese and a Basque menu for this autumn J.Y.- From my cuisine, baked Samma, a kind of blue fish that announces our much-loved autumn when served and, from Basque cuisine perhaps a dish with porcini mushrooms, or a vegetable stew to feel goxo-goxo... B.T. What made you start taking an interest in our gastronomy? J.Y.- Ha-ha! Well, living in the foodie capital, I couldn’t do anything else!

B.T. What part of your job do you like best? J.Y.- Of course it has to be seeing a happy face on trying a dish you’ve recommended with all your heart. It’s a real pleasure to see that you’ve understood their taste after only a brief conversation... B.T. You advise on and organise gastronomic visits for Japanese people who come to the Basque Country and you also manage information for the media in your country. Can we say that you act as a culinary bridge between the two cultures? J.Y.- That’s exactly what I’d like to achieve... I adore and admire the Basque Country, in all respects, not only for its food. The treasure of this country lies with the people, with those who inhabit it. It’s well known that food made without love, without a table to sit around with your loved-ones, makes very little sense. In other words, I’d like to be the person who conveys the marvellous things I know and eat to my people. I would also like to be the perfect host who makes them feel as if they have come to my home and help them to take away un unforgettable memento through their palates.
