Tragedy at Costa Blanca hospital

FOLLOWING A series of claims of alleged negligence causing death at a Costa Blanca hospital, the latest is the most disturbing.

Andrea Toth, a Hungarian lady married to 55-year-old Germán González Vega, is taking action against the Torrevieja Hospital for alleged negligence after her husband died following surgery. And Germán remains in a refrigeration unit in Torrevieja’s crematorium since his death on 6th June, whilst the courts decide whether to authorise a second autopsy.

Germán was active, taking regular exercise but was unable to work as a long distance driver, entailing long absences with irregular mealtimes: he suffered from bouts of low blood sugar as a result of his illness, chronic cirrhosis caused by hepatitis C many years before, aggravated by excessive alcohol.

During a hospital check-

up an ultrasound detected suspected but unconfirmed cancerous nodes in Germán’s liver: a treatment called chemo-embolization was proposed. Two weeks later, despite no other test being carried out and no blood tests taken, the couple received notification that the hospital would operate on 2nd June.

On 30th May the anaesthetist reportedly informed them the ultrasound was unclear and recommended Germán consult the haematologist first. The haematologist was unavailable so the anaesthetist advised speaking to the surgeon instead. The surgeon, allegedly unfriendly and impatient, said if they weren’t clear on things their doctor should have explained he couldn’t do anything for them until August (two months away).

So, the couple decided to go ahead with the operation.

Fire at the Marriott: 300 evacuated by jan Gamm

A fire that broke out in the Denia Marriott on Tuesday at around 9am forced the evacuation of 300 guests staying in 50 rooms in the hotel’s north wing.

The Denia Marriott La Sella Golf Resort and Spa located near the Montgo Natural Park is one of the region’s more luxurious holiday destinations offering a range of spa facilities to discerning guests. One such facility, the sauna located in the ground floor, was the source of Tuesday’s fire, sparked by a short circuit in its machinery: the sauna was completely charred.

Guests were safely evacuated and without panic thanks to the Marriott’s well-rehearsed fire drills and under the supervision of the attending fire service but smoke that poured through air vents caused extensive damage to the décor, soft furnishings and guests’ personal belongings left in the affected rooms.

Marriott management, headed by CEO Pörtzgen Hans, now faces a dilemma over where to accommodate guests over the coming weekend in a hotel booked to maximum capacity but short of 50 rooms put out of service by the fire: the smell of smoke is still intense in parts of the building.

Bambi arrives at Terra Natura

A BABY Barasingh deer was born in Terra Natura last Friday. The species is native to India and in danger of extinction, currently numbering between only 3,400 and 5,100. The newcomer, named ‘Marc’, is one of a herd of nine residing in the Benidorm park - Barasingh deer are chipped at birth to protect against illegal trafficking of the species.

continued from front page At 5pm on Thursday 2nd June, the surgery took place. Due to return home in two days, by Saturday Germán was still on a drip. His condition deteriorated dramatically over the following three days and his wife Andrea alleges that during that time a number of incidences alarmed and appalled her over the care being taken with her husband’s recovery.

Andrea also alleges that by the time Germán was taken to intensive care he was beyond help and that the hospital recorded a time of death a full hour later than when death actually took place, prompting her to demand a second autopsy independently of that carried out by the hospital.

The hospital’s department of Communication stated: “After evaluating the case and conveying the same information to Mrs Toth through our Attention to the Patient Service, we consider an adequate performance was carried out by all of the assisting team at

all times, with a precise and early reaction to all events and with the application of all human and material resources available at the time to solve the problem.

“We are sorry if at any time any of the family has thought that we have acted inconsiderately, incorrectly or inadequately in the treatment of the patient or the conveying of information since our only intention is to offer the best treatment and assistance possible to all family members and patients. However, it is the centre’s intention to collaborate to the maximum in order to fully establish the events of this case and resume it as soon as possible under the judicial system.”

Andrea is in limbo. Germán’s death has not been certified: the case is not yet closed and cannot be closed until an autopsy is carried out. Until the judge authorises this, Germán must stay in the refrigeration unit at Torrevieja’s crematorium, officially ‘still alive’ which his widow believes might well have been the case had this operation not taken place.

Madrid offers new deal by jack Troughton

SPAIN HOPES to bring back buyers into a property market suffering a major image crisis by offering greater access to key information and legal protection.

In a bid to kick-start a struggling economy and reduce the rump of unsold properties along the coast – estimated to be over 700,000 – the government hopes to shed its ‘homes from hell’ reputation.

Instead, Madrid is offering expats access to official records and says new legislation should prevent purchasers falling foul of planning laws and crooked developers.

Expats and new buyers can now request a certificate in English costing 29€ (plus VAT) from the land registry containing information regarding the legality of a property.

And the certificate, the ‘nota simple’, will show whether there are or have been legal proceedings against a property – especially those that could result in huge fines or demolition.

LOSS Town halls must provide the registry with information, or be held responsible for any resulting loss to third parties buying in good faith. The move was given a cautious welcome as

Benidorm approaches Standing Room Only!

LATEST FIGURES released this week on hotel occupancy show that Benidorm is approaching an all-time high, topping the 90% rate and set to rise further by mid-August.

The month closed with 90.2% of beds occupied according to data provided by Hosbec, representing an increase of 7% on the same period last year.

In July 2007 Benidorm hotels set a record of 92%.

Hosbec attributes the growth to “the recovery of international markets.” One hotel manager commented that he did not care why the growth occurred as long as it continues!

“However, these measures will not, of course, do anything to help existing home owners who have been experiencing issues with their properties. We will continue to work with the Spanish authorities to insure these problems are addressed.”

Owners of illegal properties purchased in good faith are given some hope. The land registry will recognise the existence of such homes - giving some protection from demolition - if they have stood for a minimum of four years and were not built on a flood plain or protected land.

The legislation is also intended to stamp out the underhand practice of developers of cashing in on town hall silence regarding planning applications. “A lack of a response will be considered as a negative decision.”

LICENCE

There is also help for the ‘off-plan” market. In order to register a new property with the land registry, developers have licences and a technical certificate confirming it corresponds to the plans for which permission was granted.

Charles Svoboda – a leading member of the campaign group AUN – warned official records could be contradictory and years out of date but any information was welcome.

He said: “The onus is still on the prospective buyer to do the extreme due diligence, going well beyond getting a piece of official looking paper.”

Charles said essential advice for buyers was on the British Embassy and the AUN’s own website and warned against sites managed by “property hustlers.”

He said: “Anyone buying into the Spanish market has to be aware that it is probably only going to be a lifestyle choice – maybe an extravagance like an expensive car or a boat.

“The ‘investment’ quality is very questionable for now and for the foreseeable future.”

No laughing matter

by Jan Gamm POLICE HAVE been alerted to an emerging trend amongst young people, especially under 18s, to inhale nitrous oxide (also known as ‘laughing gas’) as a way to ‘get high’.

Inhaling the gas results in feelings of euphoria and at only 2€ or 3€ per shot is a lot cheaper than alcohol.

A circular has been distributed in all provincial police stations across the Costa informing of the dangers of inhaling the gas, that include a risk of cyanosis and hypoxia caused by deprivation of oxygen in the body.

The eyes and throat can become irritated, with shortness of breath, hallucination, coughing and possible loss of consciousness, and in the case of severe reaction to the gas – death.

The decision to alert police to the dangers of laughing gas being used as a ‘fix’ was prompted by a surge in its use and abuse in Ibiza, both on

The gas is popularly available in shops selling party balloons that are filled with nitrous oxide and also in automotive shops, hotels and some supermarkets. It usually comes in small, shiny capsules.

Consumption or possession of nitrous oxide is not against

the law and many reputable companies specialising in the sale of party balloons keep it in stock.

However, selling it as a substance for ‘entertainment’, especially to minors, is now viewed by police as a crime against public health and they are being give powers to treat it as such.

Popular priest dies at 69

Don Joaquin

by jack Troughton JAVEA IS mourning the death of 69-year-old parish priest Joaquin Sendra Benavent who died this week after a long illness.

Ordained in 1967, he came to the ‘Fisherman’s Church’ – the Parish of the Virgin of Loreto - in Javea Port in 1980.

Don Joaquin was honoured for his work as a priest and the affection in which he was held three years ago when he was given the title ‘Adopted Son of Xabia’ by the town hall.

Acknowledging the 30 years Don Joaquin has worked in Javea, Mayor Jose Chulvi passed on his condolences to Don Joaquin’s family and parishioners.

Many expats will remember Don Joaquin’s annual task of blessing animals during the celebrations to mark San Antoni – as well as conducting special services at the church, every January he would visit the APASA home to sprinkle holy water on rescued dogs and pets taken to the sanctuary.

Roundabout victory

The wrought-iron piece, which depicts the Greco-Roman goddess Victoria Nike, was this week added to new decorations on the centre of the busy junction on Carretera del Cabo de la Nao-Pla. It joins a monumental tree donated

by JGPS and ends ongoing protests over the roundabout being an eyesore – it was formerly simply marked out with battered bollards despite being in the heart of the resort’s Arenal.

Brits not so bad abroad

by Jack Troughton NUMBERS OF Brits being arrested in Spain last year tumbled by more than 13% according to a new Foreign and Commonwealth Office study – with drug related offences falling 4.5%.

The downward trend seen in the report British Behaviour Abroad is in line with an “encouraging global picture” as the numbers of UK citizens arrested dropped 10% worldwide, with drug detentions down 20% - compared with the number of overseas visits down by just 2 percent.

The FCO’s statistics are based on the 12 months to 31st March this year and the need for intervention by Foreign Office staff. They handled 5,700 arrest cases last year, 1,745 in Spain.

Yet Spain has 12.3 million visitors and more than 800,000 British nationals have taken up residence here.

Minister for Europe, David Lidington, said: “We work hard to warn British nationals about the consequences of breaking the law abroad so it is really encouraging to see the overall number of cases or arrests, and drug arrests falling.

JAIL “But last year there were still 5,700 arrests of British nationals overseas. People are mistaken if they think the Foreign Office can get you out of jail. We can’t, but we will work hard to try and insure your safety, and that you get a fair trial.”

And new research for the FCO reveals 43% of 18 to 24-year-olds know someone who has taken drugs overseas and more than two thirds of travellers fail to find out the laws of the

Spanish tourists seriously injured in Cambodia THREE SPANISH tourists and four South Koreans were seriously injured in a bus accident last week in the eastern Cambodian province of Prey Veng. The bus was carrying 34 passengers between the tourist town of Siem Reap and Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) in Vietnam. The bus driver is alleged to have fallen asleep before colliding with a freight truck parked on the side of the road. A further 27 people were slightly injured in the crash. Police have opened an investigation and are seeking the driver, who fled the scene. Seriously injured passengers were transferred to various hospitals in Phnom Penh.

Blowing hot and cold…

THE TRANSPORT Ministry has released a recommendation on the use of air conditioning in vehicles. Recognising that a hot interior climate causes 20% drowsiness equal to a 0.5g/1 blood/alcohol level, the ministry recommends a constant temperature of between 21ºC and 23ºC. Along with the recommendations are observations that vehicles with faulty climate control, broken compressors or leaky gas systems will not provide the desired temperature.

Hypnosis - the next generation!

AFTER 25 years as a Hypnotherapist and with over 50,000 clients from all walks of life, I am now getting the children of some of my clients coming to see me. It’s nice and very rewarding to me personally to hear of how their parents have got on with their lives after their session.

One I recently had was a young woman with fear of flying. I was featured a few years ago on the BBC with regards to the fear of flying and also about panic attacks. The panic attacks story was about a young boy of 12 who had them so severely that he refused to go to school and jumped out of a car at 30mph on the way to school because of them. He and his mother appeared on the show (and in the press) about how he was able to overcome them and get back to school.

Another part of the show was the fear of flying and it was about a Business Woman who was so frightened on a plane that she locked herself in a toilet and wouldn’t come out! After the show was filmed one of the technicians informed me that he was also petrified of flying and consequently made an appointment. After 4 sessions of fast track hypnosis that was him sorted out and now it was his daughter’s turn.

This is the letter he sent me after his holidays.

“Hi Alan, I can’t thank you enough. I’ve just had my first holiday with a flight in 7 years. I can say that with all honesty I had some nervous times coming up to the holiday. With the help of the CDs and most of all self-hypnosis, these were soon settled. The Palma flight was delayed for one hour which meant all the flying time would be in darkness. Even when I liked to fly I didn’t like flying in the dark! As I boarded the

plane at Belfast International Airport I felt good, but the really testing time for me was the closing of the aircraft doors. Any other time, at this stage I would have been in a really bad way with fear. As the plane taxied towards the runway I could not believe how calm I felt: this in itself gave me a major boost.

As we took off I looked at C.... my wife, and gave her a big smile and told her I felt great. She also felt great, because usually by now I’d be gripping her hand! I had my mini disc with me where I had copied your CDs (just as a standby), but the cabin crew announced during the safety talk that no electronic equipment was permitted during take-off. I still had my back-up anyway, the self-hypnosis. I used it a couple of times - not that I had problems but I just wanted to top up.

As you can see by my smile I was so pleased with myself. It’s been a long time since I felt like that getting off a plane. I had a great week and never once worried about the return flight.

The last flight I had was November 2001 from Belfast to Birmingham - I was really frightened even though the flight was a smooth one and could not make myself board the plane for the flight home: I had to arrange a coach and boat for the return trip.

Booking the holiday to Majorca was a big step for me and I could not have done it without your help. I was the target of a few friendly jokes from my work mates when they heard I had gone for Hypnotherapy, but I had the last laugh. C” Because of that programme I had various TV and

radio personalities wanting to avail of my services.

This ranged from lack of confidence; stop smoking; weight control to one who had developed a shaky hand whilst holding a microphone doing interviews!

Glancing through an old life style magazine recently I came across an article about a hairdresser called Keith Kane being nominated for the British Hairdressing Awards 2009-2010. He is pictured standing beside Graham Norton, in fact it makes him the most nominated hairdresser in the history of the competition - his 14th, and his work can be seen in many publications, e.g. Cosmopolitan, etc.

How do I fit into all this? In 1990 Keith came along to see me for confidence to compete in the Schwartzkopf World Championships in Tokyo. So I did some sessions for him to go and do it - and he won! (it was featured back then in one of the Sunday Papers and about how he had come back again to do the weight control session) Over the years I have helped other world champions in boxing, kick boxing, clay pigeon shooting, motor bike racing, hairdressing and Irish dancing!

Don’t tune in I HAD to laugh at MTG’s letter to RTN on 29th July regarding a gay radio station in Benidorm.

It is not compulsory that you tune in! He wrote the self-same letter last year, when the Benidorm mayor decided to promote the resort as ‘gay friendly’.

Why he connects gays with prostitutes, drug addicts and child molesters I will never know…!

God help his grandchildren if any of them turn out to be gay - what will he do, shoot them?

How does he know of these so-called ‘sex acts’ being performed in gay bars in Benidorm’s old town - does he have firsthand knowledge?

If you want my opinion, MTG, you sound to me like a frustrated old closet queen! So there!

Feel we are being ripped off I FEEL I am being ripped off by Aquagest Levante. A friend and I went to the Aquagest office in Playa Flamenca on 12th May this year with the view to getting our water meters reduced from 20mm to 13mm in line with other residents on our urbanisation: we both live on our own in similar properties and use very little water. However, following the Aquagest survey of the sites, my friend was quoted 300.29€ while I was quoted 997.94€ for the same work in the same location on the Valencias, Villamartin. She has since gone ahead with the work on her meter.

Any help or advice you could give me would be much appreciated. I wrote to the Director at Aquagest head office in May for an explanation but as yet have had no reply.

I TOTALLY agree with the sentiments expressed by Chris Smith about Iceland’s exchange rate. I wrote a similar letter several months ago to the Costa Blanca News, pointing out that the ‘exchange rate’ changed from 1.25€ to 1.35€ and then 1.40€ to the pound, in their Benissa store. The letter was not printed but then I realised that Iceland do a lot of advertising in the CBN...they would not want to upset a good customer!

My wife and I voted with our feet and many of our friends have done likewise. It is just too irritating to see an item marked at £1 but priced at 1.40€ when we struggle to get 1.10€ to the pound. Incidentally, being in the logistics industry, I know there is no way the increase can be blamed on rising transport

costs because international haulage has never been more competitive! Also, in the UK Iceland’s product prices have not increased for years.

Another example of ‘rip-off Spain’, profiteering by Brits at the expense of Brits - but perhaps we are all envious that we can’t make such huge profits ourselves?

The worst example of Spanish profiteering was at the height of the e-coli cucumber scare. I read in the Spanish news that wholesale vegetable prices collapsed overnight (e.g. potatoes came down to 4c. per kg) but this was never passed on to consumers so profits of over 1000% were being made!

Ah well, at least the sun is shining and the wine is cheap - cheers!

A terrible thing and so sad

LAST WEEKEND in Albir a stray cross Alsation appeared wearing a collar and looking well fed. My wife was out taking our small dog out for a walk, the stray saw our dog and proceeded to stalk him but a neighbour (Roger) was able to scare the dog away thank goodness.

Another neighbour was out with his Labrador and the stray attacked it but he was able to scare off the dog. An elderly lady was out with her miniature Schnauzer and the stray went to attack, the lady picked her dog up but the stray was too strong and knocked her to the ground and killed her dog: a terrible thing and so sad. To my knowledge the Guardia took the dog away but what has happened to it I don’t know…

Really at the end of my tether SENT ON behalf of my mother-in-law who is attending the aftermath of yet another burglary: I am a lady of 74 years of age. Can someone help me and please raise the issue of domestic dwelling burglaries that are happening on the La Torretta urbanizations in Torrevieja, as I am almost at the end of my tether.

I have owned a bungalow there for over 30 years and seen dramatic changes to Torrevieja’s skyline in that time. Up until this year we never had any problems. I have now had to fly out for the fourth time this year with my daughter to attend my bungalow following break-ins or thefts.

In January I had to fly out because someone had stolen the metal mains water pipe from the mains supply along my patio and into the bungalow; in February I arrived to find the bedroom grille and windows removed and everything in the bungalow with an electric plug on it stolen, along with items of clothing including my underpants! The Police did turn up and even took fingerprints and said they thought they knew who they were but nothing happened…

Within 24 hours of returning to England following the insurance repairs and pay out we had a call to say burglars had attempted to get in again but had failed. We came out in May to find the steel door on the outside shed was twisted and bent from forcible entry and attempts made to remove the window grille.

I have just had to fly out again following a call to say the grille has been bent open and my bedroom windows broken. My rooms are trashed and TV and other possessions stolen – I am so sickened by this AND to cap it all I have just phoned the police who said they won’t even be attending the bungalow today – what am I supposed to do? Live in this mess and not clean it up?

If there has been a noticeable increase in reported burglaries why aren’t police patrols being increased or surveillance operations being done?

Why aren’t Insurance Companies putting pressure on the local Government, police etc to do something about it as they must be sick of paying out all the claims?

If they know gypsies and other undesirables are squatting in properties on the Urbanization why aren’t they being moved on?

If the resident locals seem to know who are behind these crimes – why don’t the Police?

Why do the Police seem so blasé about burglaries – don’t they realise the emotional trauma it causes?

Please, please see if your investigative reporters can unearth the true scale of burglaries in Torrevieja at the moment and see if through your newspaper any pressure can be brought to try and cure the problem.

RTN ran a story last week on the annual festival that centres on the Basilica of Santa Maria in Elche, giving the dates of the fiesta as 14th & 15th August. A reader has now confirmed that although celebrations continue over three days, the date of the actual firework display is 13th August – a whole hour of fireworks from 11pm until midnight – colourful, impressive and deafening.

ARSENAL Pyrotechnic experts ‘Ferrández Brothers Fireworks’ are busy in six (well ventilated) hangars, preparing 8,000 rockets, 1,500 thunderbolts, 400 whistle shells, 90 ‘palm trunks’, 1,500 rockets and (a new innovation for this year) 500 thunder rockets; an arsenal to turn Guy Fawkes sick with envy!

On each day of the fiesta at 2pm there will be a ‘mascletá’, where explosions rock the streets of Elche but without colour – just noise!

Yet another firework display on 15th August at midnight will mark the end of the celebrations, continuing for around 15 minutes.

So all you pyromaniacs who love a good blast - Elche is the place to be on 13th August!

Benidorm gets the green light for its first Gay Pride extravaganza: Fun in the Sun!

BENIDORM, ONE of Spain and Europe’s top gay destinations is to host its first Gay Pride from 21st October to 23rd October 2011 under the auspices of the Benidorm Gay Business Association (BGBA) and Benidorm City Council.

The BGBA - specially formed to organise the event Benidorm Pride 2011 - On the Beach! - comprises many local bars and businesses and a host of volunteers planning to make this a major fundraising event for three Spanish charities: ALGTB, (The Association for Lesbians, Gays, Transsexuals and Bisexuals); the HIV/AIDS charity Amigos, and ‘26th of December’, an organisation established to provide assisted accommodation services for elderly gay men and lesbians.

The event has been the brainchild of Julia Grant, owner of the Queens Hotel, who has worked tirelessly on the project for several months in partnership with senior members of the Association committee, and officers from the City Council, to reach this day!

Fundraising will be achieved through the sale of specially designed rainbow wristbands, public donations and corporate sponsorship. The BGBA unveiled their plans after the City Council confirmed that they intended throwing its full weight and support behind the three day event.

The Event Manager said: “There is enormous enthusiasm for the event, with big name companies lining up to offer sponsorship, and top acts indicating their desire to entertain the thousands of people we expect to pour into the city over the three days of Benidorm Pride 2011.”

He emphasised that, because of the tight timescale – less than three months – a great deal of work is needed to mobilise and en-

courage large companies to contribute, in sponsorship proposals, attract acts, and enlist the much-needed help of volunteers. He appealed to entertainers, volunteers and potential sponsors, from both Spain and across the rest of the EU to contact him if they would like to participate in what promises to be the most exciting new Pride event of 2011.

Rather than have Benidorm Pride 2011 concentrated in one single location, activities will be spread throughout the Old Town area of the city. A main stage on the beach, adjacent to the ‘gay village’ will be the entertainment focal point for the event, with several satellite stages set up in other accessible parts of the town, centred around the many gay bars, restaurants and a host of other businesses, each with their own programmes of entertainment and special offers throughout the weekend.

He said: “With the inclusion of high profile acts from Spain, the UK, Holland and Germany, Benidorm’s first ‘Pride’ promises to be a truly spectacular international event!

He added: “Benidorm has everything one could wish for, for a Pride event of this sort – miles of beautiful, award winning beaches, a fabulous climate, great scenery, three massive theme parks in the area, and a host of international restaurants, tapas bars and pubs.”

The organisers anticipate an influx of around 5-10,000 visitors, but many more could flow into Benidorm over the period.

MADRID IS preparing for the Papal visit of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI on Thursday 18th August.

Man dies after fall from roof

A 91-YEAR-OLD man has died after falling from the roof of his house in Castalla, Alcoy. The accident occurred at 3pm last Friday. Call of the wild by jack Troughton LIVING WILD on the mountainside, the ghostly white apparition frequently spotted by drivers is none other than a shy podenco named ‘Bono’.

The dog has evaded all attempts by animal lovers to capture him and is fed daily by Dutchman Ernst, who has doggedly won the animal’s confidence over two years.

Bono – who lives in the ‘campo’ near the El Vergel Safari Park – has inspired Jan Billingham to pen a poem, simply titled ‘The Ghost’, and residents of nearby Monte Pego are particularly fond of the canine spectre.

Chrissie Edwards of animal charity LAPS, explained: “Attempts have been made in the past to capture him without success and it is now Ernst’s opinion that Bono should be left enjoying his freedom.

ESCAPE “If caught he may well be very unhappy and spend all of his time trying to escape. We all have to accept that he lives by the side of a busy road and has often chanced his luck by chasing cars.”

Chrissie said the landowner accepted Bono had taken up residence and was happy with Ernst feeding the dog. “However, he does not want other people on his land and we ask that nobody else feeds Bono as he has all the nourishment he needs.”

And she said money had been raised to help the dog and before the onset of winter a shelter would be built away from the road “that will give him a bed out of the wind and rain.”

Four new public parking areas – offering 800 new parking places – have been established and clearly sign posted for drivers. Free parking is available near the Arenal Bol Beach, thanks to the Abargues foundation, at Puerto Blanco, and two areas along Avenida de los Ejercitos Espanoles.

In addition, as part of a park and ride initiative, there is a new bus stop on Avenida de los Ejercitos Espanoles and an extension to the summer bus timetable.

Councillor for Tourism, Jan Van Parijs said: “When we were speaking with residents during the election campaign, parking was one of the major issues which everyone wanted the town hall to tackle, and they are especially concerned about the summer period.

“Since we have been in office, I have been working hard to increase the number of free parking spaces available in Calpe so that both residents and tourists can park easily.”

Licensed to thrill by jack Troughton RADIO PRESENTER Susie Bond is petrified of heights and predicts a push will be required to start her daring charity skydive next month.

Susie, of Heat Gold which broadcasts on 94.1FM, hopes her partner on the tandem jump will closely resemble current 007 Daniel Craig – but in any case remains confident of raising hundreds of euros for her chosen charity, the MABS Cancer Support Group.

The 24th September jump has been organised by Jalon and Orba Lions and is intended to raise cash for a number of Costa Blanca charities, including MABS, HELP, and Help for Heroes.

Speaking at Heat Gold’s Moraira studios, Susie confessed she was scared to death of heights and said MABS President Jacqui Phillips MBE suggested she take part in the event.

Susie said she started fund-raising for MABS after a friend was diagnosed with breast cancer a year ago.

It took me three days to reply to Jacqui after she suggested it was a great way to raise funds – I said I would only do it if 007 was attached to me - that’s Daniel Craig. Unfortunately, they have not managed that yet!”

And Susie added: “I have been told once I have done it I will actually want to do it again. The only thing I am not looking forward to is actually falling out of the plane, I will have to be

The Lions organised the jump after last year’s successful charity abseil – which raised more than 6,000€ for charity – and the club says there is still room for more daredevils.

Successful Classical Concert in Aid of Samaritans and Caritas

THE EVENING of Friday 28th July saw a packed audience in the Iglesia de Moraira with more than 90 minutes of superb classical music performed by local classical guitarist Vicent Ballester in aid of Samaritans and Caritas.

Featuring a programme of 19th and 20th century music Vicent earned a standing ovation and played many encores, with people demanding to know where they could see him perform at a future date. The performance raised more than €500 for Samaritans: President Steve Ashley gave warm thanks to Felicitas, a member of the local community who organised the event. The photos show Felicitas being presented with a bouquet of thanks from Samaritans and the second Maddy and Patsy, Samaritan Volunteers assisting at the event with Felicitas and the performer, Vicent.

Steve thanked those in the media who had assisted in promoting the concert, singling out Laura’s at Westbeach, the Calpe site of the Samaritans Monday morning drop-in (10am – 12noon) who sold a considerable number of tickets for the event.

Julio Iglesias and Tom Jones confirm August concerts in Gandía JULIO IGLESIAS and Tom Jones, two internationally acclaimed performers, have confirmed their respective concerts in Gandía in August as part of the ‘Gandia, el mar donde se unen las estrellas’ (Gandia near the sea where the stars come together) event at the ‘Plaza del Puerto’ (formerly Areva Challenge), Avinguda de la Pau.

Julio Iglesias will perform on Sunday 14th August, with Tom Jones to launch his first of a total of four shows in Spain included in his European tour, on Tuesday 16th August.

Mind your language but not in English THE EOI Language School in Alcoy has received a staggering 1,400 applications for English tuition on a course that offers only 300 places!

Demand for enrolment has increased by more than 30% at the school, with a staff of eighteen teachers and 1,380 students divided into a total of 46 groups. Applications for expansion have been made to the Ministry of Education without significant success. Director of the EOI, Cristina Gomis, expressed regret that of the 1,400 applications received more than 1,000 will not receive tuition. Most of the students at the centre are studying English, but courses are also offered in French, German and Valenciano.

Paul Watts SOMETHING’S GOING on over here that makes me wish I’d never seen that film 2012. You see, I think the seasons are accelerating out of all proportion – it’ll be winter soon. You’re thinking he’s mad, eh? Okay, I might be being a tad dramatic but a few weeks back, on returning from Spain, I noticed that the leaves on the trees were already turning a brownish hue; something you do not expect until September. Well folks, I can tell you that by the last week of July the ‘fall’ had started.

And this week, I can honestly categorically report, the kerbside in our street is full of fallen leaves; and this phenomenon is being repeated throughout the West Midlands. Look, I’ve even sent an RTN

exclusive picture to prove it.

Apparently, it’s happening in other parts of the UK too. Now for trainee-depressives, such as me, this is awful news as it means summer is ending. Already I can feel the clogging melancholy that is pre-season SAD starting to kick in. This shouldn’t happen till at least the end of September. From this stand point, at the beginning of August I can usually rest assured, safe in the knowledge that there is at least another six weeks of summer left to enjoy. Another six weeks before I need to start worrying about autumn arriving. But not now if I’m up to my ankles in leaves! Crickey, the kids have only been out of school for a week! In my book, falling leaves happen after WHS Smith have advertised “it’s back to school soon, kids...” not before. And to cap it all even the conkers have started to fall - arrgghh...!

So, I thought, why do leaves fall anyway? Here’s the science: “In early autumn, in response to the shortening days and declining intensity of sunlight, leaves begin the processes leading up to their fall. The veins that carry fluids into and out of the leaf gradually close off as a layer of

That was from no less an authority than the US Forest Service. Did you catch the bit about “shortening days” and “declining sunlight” and worse of all “early autumn”? But it’s summer here not early autumn, our days are still long and we’ve even had the heat turned up to ‘eleven’ this week! In panic I telephoned my ‘arborealy’ cluedup chum Martyn to see what he thought. He blathered on about this sort of thing happening if the trees suffered “wind burn” or lack of water or too much water or extreme temperatures etc, etc, etc. But we’ve had none of that. Even the BBC could offer no clues as to what is going on. Honestly, it’s enough to promote the production of anthocyanins in sad, SAD hacks.

Martyn was able to offer some help though. He said, “Look, if the falling leaves are promoting a bit of Seasonal Affected Dis-

order - why not beat the blues literally?” Huh? He explained, “Releasing your inner Ringo and engaging in a spot of drumming has been proven to help.”

Martyn has been editing a new book that includes the findings of Finnish research into SAD and associated depression. Quoting one Professor Jaakko Erkkila (I think I’ve spelt that correctly) Martyn said the researchers, “found that people often expressed their inner pressure and feelings by drumming or with the tones produced with a mallet instrument... people described their experience as cathartic.”

Apparently, after three months of this percussive music therapy patients had “significantly fewer symptoms of depression and anxiety”. Hmmm… I like the idea of a mallet... Cheers, Martyn.

All this talk of drumming has explained a certain mystery to me. And that’s why my old mate Chic Gammage is seldom blue. It’s because Chic, as the Costa Blanca’s top drummer, is always banging away on his drums. Here Chic, pass me those drumsticks...

Knife attack on family

A MAN in Petrer has been admitted to the Psychiatric Unit of Elda General Hospital Virgen de la Salud after assaulting his brother and threatening to kill his mother with a large knife.

Police responding to a 112 call entered the family home in Elda and restrained the man,

holding him in custody for 24 hours before taking him to appear before the court. He was released with charges but immediately transferred to the hospital psychiatric unit to undergo treatment. The man is known to the police for his aggressive behaviour in the past.

Band plays on by jack Troughton NEW BAND Pastiche performed for the third time to help Marina Alta residents raise 376€ for the Pego-based animal charity LAPS The charity night was staged at the home of Martin and Marian Langtree on the Les Basettes Urbanisation, Adsubia, organised to raise money for the Local animal Protection society by Marian and Len Bradshaw. A meal was served at 6€ per head and Pastiche played background music and later dance music for 40 British and German guests – with former auctioneer John Norrish using his skills to sell four donated paintings.

Pastiche’s Tony Farmer said: “The band had been set up for fun rather than as a money making venture and other than expenses, any money the band makes will go to charities within the Costa Blanca area.

“This was only our third outing – but we already have two more bookings for August.”

Pastiche plays Restaurant L’Om in Pego tomorrow (6th August) and a charity gig at Adsubia’s cultural centre on 26th August. The Spanish royal family go sailing QUEEN SOFIA took to the water on the first day of the Copa del Rey de Vela in Palma this week, accompanied by her grandchildren. In a surprise appearance, Her Majesty with six of her eight grandchildren boarded the Mercedes Queen Sofia to enjoy the events of the day, armed with cameras and binoculars. In a popular gesture the queen purchased matching race t-shirts for the children before boarding, drawing cheers of encouragement from the assembled crowd. Absent were Princesses Leonor and Sofia, the daughters of Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia.

THINGS ARE hotting up in Imanyo, a Spanish family-owned bar and restaurant in Daya Nueva that has adopted the Paul Cunningham Nurses charity until their 28th Anniversary celebrations in mid-August. Their Charity Dog Racing Night last week already raised over €200!

Bar Imanyo in Daya Nueva had a ‘bake and buy’ cake sale on Sunday with another one next Sunday and lots of other activities such as quiz nights and Bingo nights between now and Saturday 13th August, when a fantastic BBQ event will celebrate their anniversary. A weekly ‘cut out and keep’ feature helping you to learn basic Spanish for everyday needs

WE’RE OFTEN told that Spain is a family-orientated society, and it really is.

Spanish people complain that loyalty to the family is on the wane, that more people are putting their elderly folk into old people’s homes, and that young people lack respect for their parents and so on, but to be honest the Spanish are still way ahead in the family stakes compared to the British. A teenager will still attend his grandmother’s saint’s day celebration without a murmur, and Sunday lunch time still has the force of a three-line whip - the nearest our society can get to the same kind of loyalty.

Perhaps because of this close family bond, the language describing the family has more meaning, and therefore is used more in everyday conversation.

Within the family, relationships are actually named more often. A mother would say to a child “Cuida a tu hermano” “Look after your brother” or “¿Dónde está tu hermana?” “Where is your sister?” Both my sister and I brought up our children in Spain and my mother once told me how surprised she was when my nephew answered the phone to her and called out “¡Mamá, la abuela está al teléfono!” Her Spanish was sufficient to understand that he was saying, “Mummy, the grandmother’s on the phone!” which of course sounds terrible to English ears. However, in Spanish, the family word `la abuela’ can be used without implying any lack of affection or respect: another example of how small language and

cultural differences can create misunderstandings.

Now these family words have other meanings that extend into society as a whole. The word for son is `hijo’ and daughter `hija’, and these words can be used to address any man or woman to whom you are expressing a certain paternal or maternal concern. So a friend of any age might say to you: “Hija, debes tener más cuidado”, “Daughter, you should be more careful” or “Hijo, estás trabajando demasiado” “Son, you’re working too hard.” It’s a way of expressing friendly consideration. The words for `uncle’ and `aunt’ have a slightly different connotation. `Tío’, meaning uncle can also mean a `chap’ or a `bloke’, often, though not always, a good chap. The exclamation “¡Qué tío!” literally: “what an uncle,” means, “What a great chap!” The word for aunt `tía’, is also meant to be complimentary, but in a rather different way. “¡Qué tía!” is more likely to mean something like, “What a great bit of stuff” and the expression `una tía buena’ _ literally: `a good aunt’, definitely does not refer to someone who knits you socks for Christmas.

Another interesting concept is the `cuñado’ or `brother-in-law’. In British and other societies your brother-in-law is the person you keep at arm’s length on family occasions, might feel obliged to lend some money once in a blue moon, but would only offer accommodation if your house had been blown away in a hurricane - and even then only reluctantly! In the Spanish extended family the `cuñado’ is an important part of the scene. Two `cuñados’ would probably help each other out in all sorts of ways, and might even go into business together. As a reflection of this, `cuñado’ can also be used to refer to a good friend.

A Spanish friend of mine was telling me recently how he went on holiday to a Car-

ribean island, only to hear the word `cuñado’ shouted at him at the airport. He looked round and sure enough, not his brother-in-law but an old friend from his hometown was smiling and waving with enthusiasm. Likewise, sisters-in-law,`cuñadas’ will also work closely together, looking after each others’ children and preparing family gatherings together. Geographically Spanish families tend to be much closer than English ones, and if you are in the family, even if you’re only married into it, you have an important part to play.

Although modern day Spaniards feel the family is declining, the role of the grandfather `abuelo’ and even more so the grandmother `abuela’ is still paramount in most families.

Decisions that the British would definitely regard as matters of individual conscience, such as whether to get married in church, or whether to educate ones children in a religion, will often be made with the feelings of the `abuela’ far more in mind than religious conviction. We as outsiders are inclined to view this kind of strong family feeling with rose-coloured spectacles, but it can also be an inhibiting force, preventing people from taking control of their own lives.

As an English teacher I’ve held many conversation classes with young Spanish people where we’ve discussed topics such as homosexuality; pre-marital sex; common-law marriages and so on and the opinions expressed are often very similar. Spanish young people on the whole are as liberal as those from any other country - until matters are brought closer to home. Often when I would ask, “Are you going to live together before you get married?” the reply would be “¡Qué va! ¡Mi pobre abuela!” (“No! No way!

Household debt rises for the first time in 6 months

HOUSEHOLD DEBT for Spanish families in June amounted to €886.963 million, representing a 0.12% increase from May and the first increase in six months. The Bank of Spain has released the data this week, attributing the increase to consumer credit.

Mortgage debt continues to decrease and company debt fell over the past 12 months by 2.7%.

Claiming compensation for an accident by

I TRIED to move a piece of furniture at home and have since then suffered from lower back pain (lumbago) that does not allow me to work or have a normal life. I have an accident insurance policy but the insurance company refuses to pay claiming that I caused the injury to myself by over-exerting myself and since they do not consider this an accident my insurance policy does not cover it.

Dear Reader, We understand from your letter that you contracted an accident insurance policy that would allow you to claim compensation for the days you are not able to work or recovering from an accident. (This type of insurance should not be confused with motor vehicle insurance).

In the first place we have to inform you that it is impossible to give you the correct legal advice without seeing the general

and specific conditions of your policy.

Secondly, if we take it that this type of injury (e.g lower back pain (lumbago)) is not specifically mentioned in your policy, the key is to determine whether the effort made by you, as the insured person, can be considered an accident or not and therefore whether there is a case for compensation.

If we refer to Spanish Insurance Law 50/1980 article 100 we find that an accident is defined as: Without prejudice to the limitation of risk made by the parties on the contract, it is understood as accident any damage / injury to the body caused by a sudden violent cause without awareness or intention of the insured which produces temporary or permanent disability or death.

We believe, as the stated in this article, that your insurance company is wrong and your injury qualifies as accident since it fits the description: It is an injury to the body as you are suffering a back pain.

It derives from a sudden violent cause without awareness or intention of the insured because it came suddenly from moving a piece of furniture and you were immediately affected. It was not intentionally caused and it is not a consequence of any illness previous to the accident; it does not have a psychosomatic component and it did not

depend on your will. In addition, some Spanish Courts have granted in this same sense different Court Orders, to highlight the Decision of the Supreme Court of December 4th 2000 that in a similar case of: a ‘strain in the lower back caused by a sudden movement generating lumbago’, understood that the ‘physical effort triggered the illness’, ‘thus being sudden momentary without awareness or intention of the insured not depending on his will’ - in other words, he had an accident.

Per all the above we understand that you have legal basis to ask your insurance company for the corresponding compensation as in a case similar to yours, the Ruling of the High Court was to regard this as an accident and therefore liable to be compensated by the subscribed insurance.

All this is subject to the appropriate legal advice after studying, as previously mentioned, the general and specific conditions agreed with your insurance company.

The tax man doesn’t ring at all

WELL AT least not on your door. Are scams on the increase or is it just my imagination? There’s been lots of news in the press (RTN 22nd July) by about bogus gas men - well now its bogus tax men! Someone came to the Ábaco offices recently with a cautionary tale of a knock at their Customer Care door from someone purporting to ‘collect’ IBI at Ábaco (local rates). They had very cleverly removed the property owner’s tax bill from the outside mail box, opened it and presented it to our unsuspecting victim. Unfortunately, he paid.

It wasn’t until he got a subsequent demand from SUMA (the collecting agency for IBI in the Alicante region) that he realised his mistake. Rates might be cheap in Spain but no one likes paying anything twice. So, just to clarify this for everyone, do not

give money to any ‘official’ at your door: it’s not how they work in Spain.

No matter how many badges they might have, how smart or polite they might be, they are not likely to be legitimate and they rely upon people not knowing the system. If you are in any doubt at all about an unexpected visitor, call the agency/ service/ company and check that the person at your house is who they say they are. They’ll have gone, hopefully without your money, before you’ve put the phone down.

As for IBI, unfortunately that’s no scam. It does need paying at this time of year. It is payable by residents and non-residents and is used to finance municipal roads, street lighting, schools and hospitals etc.

Most people are likely to have a standing order and will just receive notification around August time that

IBI (Impuesto sobre Bienes Inmuebles) is due to be deducted from their account in September. The tax itself can be paid at any time between the 25th July and the 10th October. If you don’t pay by standing order you will receive the bill in the post but you pay at one of the named banks and not on the doorstep.

On Crime Watch, after horrifying you with tales of streets riddled with criminals they try to reassure you that not everyone out there is a crook. Perhaps I should do the same. Not every unsolicited knock on the door is linked to a scam: just be vigilant and use your common sense. Don’t have nightmares – sleep well.

Summertime – time to review your will?

HOLIDAY TIMES are often a good time to sit back and take stock and make plans to put your affairs in order. Many foreigners resident in Spain go by to great lengths and expense to try and put their affairs in order to avoid complications for their families after their deaths. It can come as a great Solicitor, Link Point Legal shock and a disappointment to discover that the and Business Services arrangements which were so carefully made fail to have the desired effect.

Every so often we come across so-called ‘International Wills’ which have not been prepared by lawyers and which do not have the effect which the testators desired. These Wills usually fail for two main reasons.

Firstly, they do not fulfill the formal requirements for Wills and secondly the language used in them is ambiguous.

Confusingly, there are two international conventions on recognition of Wills. First, the Hague Convention of 1961 on Testamentary Dispositions, and second the Washington Convention of 1973 on International Wills.

The UK is a party to both conventions, but Spain is only a party to the earlier convention of 1961. A so called ‘International Will’ which satisfies the 1973 convention may be valid in the UK but may not be valid in Spain.

The 1961 convention provides that a Will is valid if it has been signed in accordance with the law in force in any of the following places: • The place where the Will was executed, or

• The place where the testator was domiciled either at the time the Will was made or at the time of his death, or • The place where the testator was habitually resident either at the time the Will was made or at the time of his death, or • The country of which the testator was a national at the time he made the Will or at the time of his death, or • With respect to the provisions of a Will relating to land and buildings the place where the property is situated.

So, in a typical situation, a Will made by a British citizen resident in Spain will be valid in Spain if it either complies with the formal requirements of Spanish Law, or the Law of England and Wales, Scotland, or Northern Ireland.

The second reason why a Will may fail is because the language used may be ambiguous. The language used in a Will should be clear and not open to misinterpretation. A term that is often abused is the word ‘offshore’- where exactly is this, some tax haven, or anywhere outside the UK? Also, avoid using ‘pet’ names or nick-names when making your Will to avoid confusion between family members or friends.

Contributors to expat newspapers are often accused of ‘labouring the point’ that anyone with property in Spain should have a Spanish Will. I make no apology in repeating this message yet again.

Yes, it is possible to obtain probate of a English or other foreign Will in Spain but this may well involve getting probate of the foreign Will first, having it ‘legalized’ in the country where probate was granted, then translated by a certified translator, possibly also obtaining a ‘Certificate of Law’ from a foreign lawyer or Notary, again ‘legalized’ and translated.

In an effort to prevent fraud, the probate registries in England and Wales are increasingly asking that applications for probate of Wills signed overseas are supported by an ‘Affidavit of Due Execution’. This is a sworn statement from either or both of the witnesses to a Will that they did indeed witness the testator sign their Will and that it is genuine. If you are making a new English Will always make sure that your Witnesses are traceable in case they need to swear an Affidavit of Due execution when probate is applied for.

These expenses can add many hundreds of pounds or euros to the cost of obtaining Probate in Spain, and cause months of delay, whereas the cost of a run-of-the-mill Spanish Will may only be around €150 including Notary fees, and make the whole process so much easier.

If you have a Will and are concerned that it may be ambiguous, or may not reflect your wishes as you intend, or you don’t have a Spanish Will contact us to make a new Will while you still can, rather than leave a legacy of expense, delay, and heartache for your descendants.

QROPS around the World Part 4 A roundup by

Stephen Ward & Robert Burns OVER RECENT weeks we have provided quite a detailed summary for expats to consider of how QROPS operate in the key jurisdictions. There are pros and cons of all of these, for example: 1. New Zealand QROPS are able to offer the most benefit flexibility for long term expats but funds that remain invested are subject to tax.

2. Guernsey QROPS offer less benefit flexibility (in some instances now a UK Self invested personal pension scheme (SIPP) can be more flexible), but funds invested are not taxed.

There is however no investor protection for those who fall out with their QROPS trustees.

3. Isle of Man (IOM) - recent legislation allows the long term expat to receive all the growth following a transfer to an IOM QROPS to be taken as a lump sum in addition to 30% of the amount originally transferred in. There are very effective investor protection provisions, tax free growth of the fund invested, but restrictions on the ability to transfer out to another jurisdiction should circumstances change.

There are of course other jurisdictions including for example Malta, which although offering similar features to Guernsey schemes, is a member of the EU, which for some is seen as an

additional benefit. Others such as Australia are only open to Australian residents.

The features and benefits of QROPS across the various jurisdictions make it essential to receive competent advice before deciding which, if any, to transfer to. One size does not fit all. A transfer to NZ may be the best solution for one client whilst for another, Guernsey or IOM or even a transfer to a UK SIPP may be best.

DON’T FORGET UK SIPPS It is easy to forget the flexibility offered by a UK based SIPP in particular following the implementation of the Finance Act 2011. There are now provisions in place which for some even allow 100% commutation of the fund (albeit subject to tax). This is providing there is already in place a secure and guaranteed income of at least £20,000 a year. UK SIPPS generally cost much less than a QROPS and there is a highly effective investor protection regime through the Financial Services Authority.

SO WHAT OF THE FUTURE? Other jurisdictions are looking closely at entering what is a multi-billion pound market for pension transfers into QROPS. We are privileged to be involved with some of these developments. Watch out for example for developments in the Caribbean which we think will be very exciting with interesting opportunities for short term and long term non UK residents.

accommodate this is currently winding its way through the NZ parliament and should receive Royal Assent soon. Although there are some technical hurdles to negotiate this potentially offers the opportunity for New Zealand as a jurisdiction to pretty much ‘wipe the floor’ with the rest of the market, offering lower costs, tax efficiency and a flexible approach to benefits.

So the QROPS market remains young and evolutionary. As further developments are finalised and come to the fore we will be the first to tell you about them in this column.

Is that a light at the end of the tunnel?

THERE ARE thousands of properties for sale in Spain and prices are such that there are serious bargains to be had. So is now the right time to invest in Spanish property?

Over the last few months Spanish politicians have been ‘talking up’ the prospects of investing in Spanish property. However, their efforts have been met with derision and cynicism in some quarters.

In the present economic climate it is easy to be negative. Is it wise to invest when prices are still falling? How can it be safe to invest when issues concerning illegal builds, land grab and bank guarantees are still unresolved?

Times are hard and frustration is running high.

Political short-sightedness and the tendency to disavow accountability and responsibility seems endemic in Spain and are root causes of many of the problems property owners now face. Couple these problems with falling prices and the outlook does indeed look dire. But it is not all doom and gloom.

Spain has a lot to offer the potential property investor and I’m not just talking about a cheap house. There are pitfalls but these are clearly recognisable and can be avoided with the right advice and support.

If you are looking to make a fast buck then you are looking in the wrong place. Investing in Spain is for the longer term. At the moment property for sale in Spain offers great value for money but Spain offers so much more that money cannot buy. Spain can offer a lifestyle to suit every dream and that is why I live here. It is by no means easy to live here: it is just better.

If we want our communities to prosper again then we have to stand up for them. What is wrong with saying that our glasses are half full rather than half empty? Spain has a lot to offer and we who live here or come here on holiday know it. Let’s make sure everybody else does.

The economic climate is bleak at the moment and for sure there may be more difficult times ahead.

Standing up against injustice and fighting for fairness is the right thing to do. It doesn’t matter who put us where we are today - the fact is that we are the only ones who can get us out of the mess we are in. There is no quick fix but for every problem there is a solution, all you need is the will to find it. Even though it looks some ways off there is a light at the end of the tunnel and I believe that it is getting brighter.

Tasty summer tomatoes by

THERE ARE few people who don’t relish a tasty tomato straight from a bush untainted by chemical insecticides and fungicides and luckily tomatoes are among the easiest and most useful vegetables to grow whether you live in an apartment, town house or villa from spring to autumn.

HOW TO CARE FOR THE PLANTS We regard the plants as easy as they soon grow and produce good crops if you: Plant them in enriched water retaining but not water logging composts in containers or similar soil in raised beds, among the flowers in the garden or on the vegetable plot.

Ensure that the plants are regularly watered and once they start to develop flowers are given a fortnightly feed. If you have comfrey make up a feed by filling a barrel with leaves and water and leaving for a few weeks.

You water at the base and avoid wetting leaves as this can stimulate fungal problems.

You dust the plants with natural yellow sulphur powder every fortnight in the evening when plants are dry with natural yellow sulphur powder to prevent and combat mildew and other fungal problems. We dust the sulphur by placing a handful or two in an old sock and shaking this over the plants.

You remove dead leaves and on tall growing plants pinch out the shoots that grow between each side shoot and the main trunk. If you want bushy plants reduce this thinning out the top green growth.

You support the plants by tying to canes with raffia or plastic ties which do not cut into the skin of the stems.

If you plant good plants and care for them well you may still be harvesting into November and of course longer if you move containers to a green house in mid-autumn.

WHAT TO DO WITH THE CROPS? Luckily there are many things. What we do is as follows: Use for tomato salads or in mixed salads.

Regularly prepare a garlic tomato spread for spreading on bread. The easiest way of preparing

is to put one or two garlic cloves and tomatoes in a small electric chopper or coffee grinder.

Dry both small grape and cherry tomatoes and sliced larger tomatoes in our fan assisted tray dryer. For more information contact the distributors: order@conasi.biz (response in English).

Make wonderful tomato jam. There could be no simpler recipe …a kilo of tomatoes, half a kilo of granulated sugar, a small stick of cinammon and the juice of a lemon.

Bottle and freeze them for winter/ spring use.

Use them in a whole range of fish and meat dishes including soups, and of course they are an essential ingredient for cooking a genuine paella.

Juice fresh or use as a base for a Bloody Mary.

Colgar tomatoes are harvested by hanging up whole plants when the tomatoes are just showing the first patches of greeny pink. They are then hung up in a breezy north-facing sheltered porch until required during the winter. These tomatoes are better for cooking than salads.

During the summer decide which tomatoes you like best and dry some seeds to keep in the fridge until next spring and then produce your own plantlets.

it’s the way forward WE ALL know from the thousands of satellite dishes here that receiving UK television is big business on the Costa Blanca; both on private properties and also on communities. With constant improvements in technology, there are a number of points to consider for any community president looking to install a new satellite system or update an existing one.

Considering that any communal system will cost thousands of euros, it is vital that the chosen system works well for every member of the community now and for years into the future. It is only with time that a system will prove its reliability. Even some poor quality installations will work for a short while but it is long term reliability that is needed.

Most importantly, when choosing a communal system, take time to consider the technology being used. With many conventional systems, the customers who are located furthest from the dish will often have a poor quality and unreliable signal. Iberdrola ICP switch causes unforeseen problems A CONSEQUENCE of having an ICP switch fitted is that home owners do not have enough power to run all of their electrical appliances. This is what I am finding in the vast majority of properties that I visit as many as 8 out of 10 homes do not have a sufficient contracted power supply for their power consumption needs. This is evident when several appliances are switched on at the same time: the power overloads the ICP, and it ‘trips-out’.

A new Spanish law states that all domestic dwellings must have a power control switch that limits the user to their contracted supply.

This means an ICP must be fitted. Where Iberdrola records show that a home does not have an ICP fitted, they are writing to the owner instructing them to fit one, otherwise face an increased electricity tariff.

Many properties that are contracted for a 3.3 kW tariff or less have had work carried out to their Consumer Unit to upgrade their electricity supply but have not obtained a new contract from Iberdola. In these instances the electricity supply must be returned its original state, so that an ICP can be fitted. Iberdrola can then be contacted to arrange to ‘inspect and seal’ the switch. Only when the correct rated ICP is fitted which corresponds with the contracted supply will Iberdrola approve the installation.

Many home owners must now cope with the unforeseen cost of legitimately upgrading their electricity supply: arranging a new contract and boletin (certificate), plus carrying out any electrical work needed in order to upgrade the

wiring of the installation to the current Spanish electrical regulations.

In a typical installation that I survey, the power control switch in a 3.3 kW installation has been replaced with a higher rated switch to allow the consumer to draw more electrical power. In other instances, I see the potentially dangerous practice of changing circuit breakers, again for higher rated switches, to avoid tripping out problems which can cause a fire should the circuit overload. A circuit breaker is an automatically operated electrical switch designed to protect an electrical circuit. Only when the switch is rated at the correct size can it function properly.

Obsolete socket outlets must also be changed.

Until recently Spain did not standardise its socket outlets and there are a wide variety installed in properties across the region. The ‘Schuko’ socket is now standard in Spain and fitted in accordance with the current Spanish electrical regulations. Schuko plugs are considered a very safe design when used with Schuko sockets but they can also mate with other obsolete sockets to give an unsafe result.

A Schuko socket features two round pins, plus two flat contact areas on the top and bottom side of the plug for protective earthing: Schuko sockets form a cavity into which the plug is inserted.

Home owners with illegitimate electrical upgrades should also consider the implications of home insurance cover in the event of an electrical fire.

Renters told, “Hands off our Geckos!”

LANDLORDS OF holiday homes are starting to leave notes for holidaymakers requesting they do not kill the geckos (small lizards that live on the walls and ceilings of most Costa Blanca houses and also in the gardens and nayas). After visitors depart, owners and holiday

management companies find several little corpses; evidence of assassination by renters unaware of the geckos’ long standing and efficient role of keeping insects at bay! The shy and innocent gecko is quite harmless and many villa owners name them after artists or composers.

The Solar birdbath – the latest in garden décor SOLAR ENERGY is utilised to power a gentle spray of water in the latest garden trend, the solar birdbath. The solar panel is in the centre of the fountain and only moderate sunlight is required to provide a constant tinkle of water over six hours, following an eight hour charge – no problem in the Costa Blanca where there is no shortage of sunshine! The advantage, of course, is being able to dispense with electrical wires and sockets. The solar birdbath is due to arrive on the Costa Blanca this autumn and is pricey at more than 150€, tipped to drop over the winter season.

General Election fever ONE OBVIOUS headline story this week is the early election in Spain, as Zapatero has brought forward the General Election to November, from 2012. Somewhat surprising to be honest as the PSOE don’t have a cat in hell’s chance of winning, but I suspect that having already decided that he wasn’t going to stand for re-election he has probably just had enough.

Can’t really see there being any surprises at the election either, with the PP 15 points ahead in two polls published this week. The survey in ‘El País’ revealed that the PP would get 44.8% of the vote, compared with 30.8% for the PSOE, equating to a difference of 14 points and a possible absolute majority in the Congress of Deputies. The poll published in ‘La Razón’ gives Rajoy 46.9% of the vote, with a margin of 16 points over Rubalcaba, with 30.9% of public support. These results would give the PP an absolute majority - between 183 and 186 deputies - whereas the PSOE would win between 118 and 122, which would be their worst result since the 2000 general elections.

No surprises either post the election: things are going to get tougher in Spain as the PP have pledged to restore investor trust in the Euro area’s fourth- biggest economy by imposing more spending cuts if it wins early elections in November. The People’s Party led by Mariano Rajoy, 56, is set to campaign on the extra steps it says are needed to kick-start growth and slash unemployment of more than 20%.

What will be interesting, though, is just how much interest in the election the expat community across Spain takes. During the past UK election you couldn’t pick up a English language paper in Spain

without reading another view from a budding columnist, or should that be the same old view from somebody seeking their 5 minutes of ‘fame’, and across the bars of Costa Almeria it was a hotly debated subject indeed. At the time I wrote that I hoped the expats tools half as much interest in the next election in their adopted country so I await the next couple of months with interest. That said, over the weekend in a ‘straw poll’ only less than 10% of the expats I talked to knew that the election had been brought forward.

One subject I suspect we will see debated will the organisation of the Health Service here in Spain as the head of the national cardiology service, Carlos Macaya, has recently said that more than 1,000 lives a year could be saved if it were better organised. He commented in a conference recently that of the 70,000 people who suffer a heart attack every year, the survival rate was 95% for those who had an angioplasty operation in time.

Elsewhere in the headlines this week another victory for the bull as a man was gored to death after provoking a bull with an umbrella during a festival in eastern Spain. The victim, who was described as around 50, was apparently drunk when he struck the bull with the umbrella, enraging the animal during the festivities Saturday evening in the town of Rafelbunyol, in the province of Valencia.

Probably the most understated story of the week has to be that Spanish football fans are “fairly optimistic” about their country’s chances of reaching the 2014 World Cup finals in Brazil, according to a recent poll, which showed that no less than 85% believe Spain will finish top of their qualifying group.

‘Best’ story of the week? That 200 portable confessional units are being made to be placed on the Paseo de Coches in Madrid for the Pope’s visit later this month. They are being built by Ávila and will be put in place a week before the pontiff ’s arrival, allowing the public to confess in as many as 20 languages from 10am to 10pm between Tuesday 16th and Friday 19th, and between 10am and 12 noon on Saturday 20th.

‘Bizarre’ story of the week? A beach in Mallorca has banned people from urinating in the sea on pain of a 1,500€ fine. Bathers who answer the call of nature whilst swimming, or on the sand, will be forced to hand over a four-figure fine if they are caught. Without going into details …how will they go about catching people?

And finally El Bulli, the beachside Spanish restaurant repeatedly crowned the world’s best, closed over the weekend after pushing the boundaries of cuisine for more than two decades under chef Ferran Adria. The remote eatery in Cala Montjoi, some two hours north of Barcelona, will re-open in 2014 as a non-profit culinary think tank that will investigate new cooking techniques and develop new flavours.

How can I stop spam?

Jon from Mazarron asks: I AM receiving spam with names quoted that are not in my email address list but are friends on Facebook. Is there anywhere that I can report this to on Facebook? I have looked for a contact email address on Facebook to no avail. How can I stop the spam? I suppose it is too late to come off Facebook, which I never use anyway?

Aunty Says: Hi Jon. Unfortunately lists of email addresses get passed around (deliberately and accidently) and there is little or nothing you can do about it. There was probably an EULA (End User License Agreement) that you ticked when signing up for FB that gives them carte blanche to do whatever they like with your personal details. Really all you can do is start another email address just for private use and send all your close friends and family notice to use the new one, and maybe phase the old one out or just check it every once in a while. I find Gmail the best email service regarding automatic spam filtering.

Aunty Says: There are now so many of these PC optimization programs out there that it’s becoming very difficult to work out which ones are genuine, and which ones are simply trying to part us with our hard earned cash.

I cannot recommend any of them Ursula and I certainly wouldn’t consider paying for one until I had fully tested and researched exactly what it does. Some of these programs are actually quite dangerous as they will trick you into paying a subscription to remove malware or tune-up your PC, and then liberate your bank account or credit card of all kinds of payments. If your computer is running badly then maybe phone around for a competent PC/Windows techie to give it a service.

Gadget Inspector investigates the case of: Boys Toys THIS WEEK the Inspector is taking a look at a couple of gadgets no self-respecting male should be without.

No, we´re not talking about anything as mundane as a car with a long bonnet to advertise machismo (that all started with the Ford Capri…), or possessing the biggest or loudest television or HiFi – but gadgets that represent areas of typical male pride: the remote control and car racing set.

To satisfy that all-controlling desire we have the Logitech Harmony 900 universal remote control at €275. This little marvel has a colour touch-screen as well as the more traditional buttons. Not only can it be programmed to operate any individual home entertainment device, but it can also handle sequenced operations such as turning on the TV before the DVD. And it´s no problem if your devices are hidden away in cupboards – the supplied RF adapter will allow you to still control them without having to open the doors.

The Harmony 900 has sculpted and backlit buttons for easy operation, and re-charges in its own base station when not in use – searching for batteries will never again interrupt a highly complex channel-hopping operation. Up to 15 separate devices can be handled – more than enough for most people.

Remember that childhood racing set? It’s well known that everyone remembers their first Scalextric. We´ll say nothing about those con-artists who brought out the TCR (Total

Control Racing) sets and tried to lure us away – utter rubbish - bloody things never overtook when they were supposed to.

Scalextric has now redressed the balance with the Digital Pro GT racing set at €330.

The Pro GT set has one of the largest 2 lane figure-of-eight layouts – 9 foot by 5 foot. There is also a raised bridge section and two lane-change sections.

Four cars are supplied – the Aston Martin DBR9, Porsche 911 GT3R, Maserati MC12 and Ford GT-R. All cars have working lights front and rear, easy change pick-ups and the Magnatraction system to help them stick to the circuit like glue. But most important is the lane change button – one press and the car switches lane instantly to overtake or block an opponent. And to rule out cheating there is the Digital Lap Counter that counts down the laps and gives the cars finishing positions. Brilliant!

The Inspector´s Verdict: It would appear the Logitech Harmony remote control (perhaps Quarrel would have been a better name considering the trouble it’ll cause…) is missing one vital feature that without it makes it utterly useless to any man – a fingerprint security device. This would ensure that only a (male) fingerprint would activate it, avoiding obvious problems like the television channel changing from a vital World Cup Qualifier to Coronation Street or the HiFi changing

from Muse to Celine Dion… A mute button that worked on people would be useful too, perhaps in a later model.

The Scalextric Pro GT racing set poses no such problems – no-one is going to want to play with you after the first 15 multiple car pile-ups, and there´s no use complaining that the cars don´t have a loud enough horn or flashing headlights to get slower cars out of the way. Now where was that Ebay auction for that classic 280 Brooklands Capri?

Chiropractic recognition in Spain THE MINISTER for Health, Leire Pajin, has announced in the Senate that in September the final list of natural therapies recognised and regulated by the National Health System will be released.

Among these is chiropractic, which focuses on disorders of the neuromusculoskeletal system and its effects on the body.

The AEQ (Asociacion España de Quiropractica) has been working hard over the past 20 years to promote the highest standards of chiropractic care and to protect the name of chiropractic. The recognition of chiropractors in Spain is a big move towards full legislation, exactly as in the UK, where it is illegal to use the title ‘Chiropractor’ without having a full Master’s degree.

The recognition of chiropractic in Spain opens up the accessibility of the profession to millions of Spanish and thousands of expats living here in Spain. Chiropractic, born in the United States in 1895, is recognised in the legislation of all European countries except Greece, Luxembourg and Spain, and in Spain there are currently circa 200 professional practitioners.

Home care for everyone Part 2 FOUR WEEKS ago we told you about RTN’s first visit out with Nurse co-ordinator Paula Reed and some of her nurses from Anneke Integral Care Services (AICS) Group.

Paula and her nursing team are one part of the AICS Group, which also runs the first-rate nursing home called Anneke Residence in Alfaz del Pi. Paula has been with AICS for six years. She and her team provide professional home care service based on the Dutch model, whereby a team of qualified, multilingual nurses and nursing assistants guarantee a very high standard of homecare to chronic patients, elderly people with specific needs, the disabled, post-operative treatment patients and terminal patients.

In fact anyone based in Costa Blanca, whether in a house, hotel or campsite can use the homecare services of Anneke Integral Care Services, the largest care organisation offering its services on the Costa Blanca, covering the whole region from Denia to Torrevieja under its banner ‘Home care for everyone’.

Paula explains: “Our team focuses on the personalised care of patients in their personal and family environment, usually their home. Many of our patients wish to remain in their own home for as long as possible and quite often this can contribute to a quicker recovery, and it certainly boosts and maintains the patient’s independence.

“We work as a team. As well as keeping meticulous patient

We also work to support each other when we have any really unwell clients. And of course we work with the doctors in the community and through the seguridad social.”

Paula continues, “We often care for many clients whose close families live in England, Germany or Holland. We keep in touch with them by email or if more urgent issues arise then by telephone, so they can be assured that their loved ones are being cared for. And we don’t just help older people - we will help anyone of any age. In fact just recently I have been caring for an eleven-year-old boy recovering from surgery”.

For our second visit to meet with one of their patients, RTN visits Ken and David who have lived for 24 years in Calpe.

They are 75 and 83 years old respectively, and David is not at all well, suffering from bi-polar depression, and recently having had a fall.

“If it was not for the nurses and Dr Hendricks and our

cleaner I would truly not be able to cope,” says Ken, who continues, “I am extremely grateful to them all - they are absolutely wonderful.”

“Immediately after David fell we were coming twice a day to care for him,” explains Paula. “Because we are a nursing team of nine nurses we can increase or decrease the visits as necessary. Believe you me we cover many miles and miles, shooting up and down the Coast taking care of our clients.”

THE SPANISH have a word for it. They say that sometimes the World is just a pocket handkerchief, and that is so true. Serendipity links the Globe in a unique way, whilst air travel has shrunk journeys to the four corners as we travel this Planet.

Recently I had breakfast here in Spain, ate lunch in London with an old friend I hadn’t seen for many years, and then ended the day with supper in the midnight sun of North Norway; good going since Queen Victoria once issued a stern warning to her subjects, that travelling faster than 5 miles per hour could cause us serious health problems. Dear Victoria, now the exact opposite is true, if we are slowed down by traffic and manage 5 miles per hour our stress levels hit the roof!

It’s a fast go-getting World now. Anything is possible as we become more international daily. Countries now have more open doors, and standards have brought us together as our wants and needs are appreciated and acted upon. That cash dispenser will accept your credit card and we can dial the World in seconds and email the Universe from the comfort of an arm chair. Great strides have brought understanding, furthered communication and established links that network the World.

Spirit has been doing this for years. Trying to unite and protect is still the number one for an organisation composed of living and dead energies. But never forget that each and every Spirit member living in the Other Side has had at least one life here on Earth, and have chosen, as their right, to return to us to prove their survival, Those of the living, who truly believe, will tell you that they have had doors opened to them, that the Universe chooses to reward them, instruct them, and to safely support them wherever they go.

I have always loved walking along new roads, seeing new places, experiencing different customs. I have never had fear of the unknown or the loneliness of being far from home. I guess that this is because I know that with the protection brought about

by Spiritual connections, my own individual protection and a great curiosity and zest for life that this is my Planet, and I hope to walk always, by intention, a path of love and light.

When next you pack your suitcase why not take Spirit with you wherever you roam? It demands only your belief, and you can ask for further information; it will offer you in return many riches and rewards and surprises all along the way.

Absent healing is given to those who cannot attend for ‘hands on’ healing, which is my favourite way of sending healing energies, but not always possible, of course.

Distance healing sends out the healing message to anyone, anywhere in the World. My healing list is a list of people who need spiritual healing.

When linking and sending specific healing there is often no time to read every name, thus the healing list is mentioned daily so that those who need it receive the healing energy amongst all who are listed, and who therefore deserve to receive this special spiritual energy of healing, with love and light.

The moving concert and remembrance service last April was caught on film by the cameras of Viva TV – and a memento of a historic occasion available at 10€ a set including postage and packing. And by purchasing a souvenir people are helping raise much needed funds for the Legion in Spain’s District North – which is spent locally supporting ex-servicemen and women and their dependents.

And Heart’s Amy Longstaff told RTN the Benitachell-based station was keen to help out good causes – earlier it joined Xabia International College in a Red Nose Day fund-raiser and had helped collect cash for children’s charity EMAUS. “We are all about ‘have a heart’ as Heart Radio and we just need people and charities to contact us and we will try to help out,” she said.

HAH looks to the future HAH HELP at Home decided to run down fund-raising activities during the summer while many volunteers were away, or with family commitments. Despite this, two weeks ago volunteers clocked up a massive 163 hours of FREE care in the community, helping more than 60 clients in the last nine months and still actively involved with 17.

HAH works with Spanish national care providers - such as hospitals and clinical centres -to facilitate an improved level of care for the English-speaking public. New hospitals have gone a long way to achieving this, but there is still a lot of work to be done to improve patients’ experiences. Adequate past systems are now ‘out of sync’ with modern informationsharing, proved to HAH by patients’ comments and the lack of information post discharge.

HAH will endeavour to work with the authorities to improve this urgent situation.

Volunteer Nurse Practitioner Lynda Christopher (pictured) will now be asked to provide her services to HAH on a paid basis. Lynda has current and validated British Nursing Registration BSc (Hons), NP, RGN, RSCN, DipCh SP and is also registered with the relevant Spanish Authorities, therefore able to work in Spain legally. She can provide health advice on a wide range of subjects due to her many years in secondary and primary care. You can contact her on Tel 633 673 034.

CANCER SUFFERER Maria Wilson and her team of Pink Ladies presented a cheque to the President of the provincial AECC last week at an event that was attended by more than 100 people.

The money that was donated to the cancer charity is as a direct result of the Maria and the Pink Ladies 5km Walk that took place in Orihuela Costa on 5th June and other recent fundraising events and the total amount donated was an amazing €19,271.50!

In just over a year, Maria and the Pink Ladies have donated a whopping €30,854 to the AECC and the President of the Alicante branch of the charity, Pablo Enriquez, was absolutely delighted. He tearfully thanked Maria and the ladies for all their fundraising efforts and was accompanied by the President of the AECC in Orihuela, Marisol Marco.

The guests at the presentation ceremony, which took place at Fit for All in Punta Prima, were treated to a delicious hot and cold buffet and entertainment from the fabulous Suzy G.

What a load of rubbish IF YOU believe statistics (and who doesn’t) we apparently waste 30% of the food that we buy and that’s before we even unpack it. Past its sell by date or not quite as appealing now as it was when you fancied it and then bought it yesterday.

Factor in the amount that you burn, undercook, spoil, curdle or drop rendering it inedible and the percentage could be much higher.

It’s not just us either, apparently Supermarkets also waste 30%, either it doesn’t meet their exacting requirements for sale or you don’t buy it and it has to be thrown away. That’s an awful lot of wasted food no wonder there are worries about future stocks. But that’s not my real problem.

Being quite good at mathematics I have worked out that if you add the 30% we waste to the 30% that Supermarkets waste then that adds up to an almost 50% total of the packaging that our food comes wrapped in, which serves no purpose whatsoever apart from clogging up landfill, and that really is a waste. Whilst there are moves toward biodegradable I think we need some more radical action.

Change our buying habits? Not likely, although a trip to Ondara and the street market showed how efficient buying could be. The older generation were quite happily buying the outside leaves of both cabbage and celery to presumably

use in a Cocido, stew, soup or stock leaving the inner part, which was then sold to the younger buyers as conveniently ready trimmed for perhaps salads. Good but not radical enough.

Having seen how involved some children can get when we get them recycling in the home they quite look forward to a trip to the local recycling centre. Not always the case I accept but where we live here in Spain they are kept spotless, regularly emptied, areas swept and then washed it’s a pleasure to get the kids involved as well as being relatively safe. But we could do more.

Once I witnessed a man in a store who bought a set of suitcases. Every single case came wrapped in plastic, bound with cardboard and stuffed with paper, he then unwrapped every case, put one case inside the other in order of size leaving with just one, conveniently packed suitcase. Pointing to the mountain of rubbish left in the middle of the store floor he said, “I didn’t order that” With packaging taking up more room despite the contents remaining the same I have done some research and discovered that packaged meat products alone took up only 43%, 37% and 26% of the total volume of the package, that means that some 2/3rds of your fridge could be taken up with packaging rather than food. I think supermarkets should be more responsible for the rubbish we buy.

How about a recycling theme park? Terra Mitica or even a Disney style park that would help turn a duty to recycle into a really good time too. Even I fancy the idea of catapulting loads of coloured glass bottles and cans at various moving targets; we could all have a smashing time, not only fun for all the family but paying for the privilege too.

ouis Walsh has told Closer magazine in a recent interview that he believes the two new lady judges on the X Factor, Kelly Rowland (Destinys Child) and Tulisa Contostavlos (N Dubz) will clash big time when the new show goes out later this year. This could well be a stunt to stir up interest in the stumbling show but somehow or other I believe Louis is ´telling it like it is ´.

I mean, if they’re threatening to blow up the planet that means them as well – sounds like an empty threat to me.

Whatever - Reilly handles it all well and tells his story with gripping aplomb. Just be prepared to suspend belief and enjoy the ride. I loved it.

Ondara offers outdoor movies for August THE DEPARTMENT of Culture in Ondara has introduced a delightful programme for cinema goers that prefer their cinema entertainment in the open air. UK Scout Jamboree contingent visits Spain WORLD SCOUTING meets every four years for a World Jamboree and this year more than 40,000 Scouts will make Sweden their venue.

As part of this event, Scouts gather for a week in the host country, camping and learning about life in that country and making new international friends. The second week, the Scouts either go off to receive home-hospital-

ity in the host country or travel in a group to another nearby country.

This year a Group of 40 Scouts and Leaders from Somerset will come to San Pedro del Pinatar and be received by Leaders from the British Group at Camposol – the 1st Murcia Sur – part of the British Groups Abroad Organisation.

They will stay at the first-class facilities at Castelar College and have been assisted in this by both the Spanish Scout Association and the staff at the College. Their activities will include

a trip to the San Javier Air Station, trying out the famous mud-baths and local beaches, visiting historic Cartagena and sampling some Spanish life.

And the mayor of San Pedro, Sra. Visitacion Martinez Martinez, and the Councillor for Youth Activities, will bid them welcome to the City.

Spanish driving licences by

DEAR BRIAN, I am hoping you can help me with my Spanish driving licence (see both sides attached). This was obtained for me through a gestor in July 2009 (€101!) and appears to run out in July 2014, though the HGV part (which I will not be using) expires in July this year.

This looks like a temporary licence and I thought I might have received a European style card licence by now.

However, the gestor says I will have to wait for expiry before getting one of those. I have a Spanish medical certificate issued in November 2008, by the way.

What are your thoughts on this, please? I was reminded to write by your article in this week’s RTN. Many thanks, John Price

Dear John, This is the card type before the issuing of the current credit-card type, 1992 to 2003 or 4. I have not seen this one issued lately but I had one when I changed my UK 1979 licence for a Spanish one in 2001 and then in around 2004 after a medical, the credit card one was issued.

The one you have been given is perfectly legal so the gestor is probably correct.

Currently the photo, by web cam, is taken as part of a medical at the reconcimiento clinic as the form is completed online, and then the new licence is posted from Trafico and received about three weeks later by the applicant, depending on how busy they are.

So after your next medical all will be correct.

101€ is not too bad compared with some reports I have had but many of the Spanish have a problem where they think we expats are all very rich, and some medicals are now costing up to 60€. Also the Spanish are suffering with low incomes as we all are now, but they just charge a lot more to make it up which they can do if you cannot go elsewhere.

You are now 62, ten years younger than I, so the next medical will be at age 67. I suggest you ‘diarise it’ in case they do not send you an aviso.

The HGV one will automatically expire if you do not take a medical so no worries, and the medical for HGV etc is different to the ordinary class B. But I passed it so it is not too bad.

THE MAYOR of El Campello has banned the riding of bicycles on the promenade and also along the Muchavista Carrerlamar following several minor accidents involving cyclists and pedestrians. The installation of a cycle lane is not possible due to current regulations in place and also the constraints of available space.

However, cyclists have been permitted to ride in these areas within a 4kph limit for the past two years under the management of the former mayor, Elisabeth Basto. Local police are now patrolling the area and advising cyclists of the new ban, although no fines have been issued.

WHAT A superb weekend of golf at the Carnoustie links course in Scotland, where Yani Tseng triumphed in the Women’s British Open. In doing so, she became the youngest golfer ever to win five major titles - what a great achievement for someone aged just 22!

There was some debate over which nine had an advantage against the stiff breeze off the sea which wrecked quite a few cards; that and slow greens resulted in generally low scores. With three trophies up for grabs in three formats and a multitude of extra prizes one member was heard to say, “You need an ‘ology’ to understand this!”

The main competition was a stableford for the Bonalba Cup. However, the prize table was so complete that there were prizes for the non-prize-winners!

Michael Taylor’s return to form with 39 points secured the Bonalba cup, with Bob Edwards and Gordon Holloway on 34 points taking second and third respectively.

The Moneycorp Stableford included bonus points from various holes which Bob Edwards clearly enjoyed to amass 48 points, leaving Dave Knight, Stafford Pemberton, Gordon Holloway and Roger Vicars with 41 trailing: Roy Booth on 31 was sixth.

A net 70 saw Michael Taylor win the Giles Walker medal four strokes ahead of Gordon Holloway, with Bob Edwards in third with 75, ahead of Roger Vicars on 76.

Monte Crown Canaleta generously sponsored a host of chances to win a prize and these were won on hole 4 by Gordon Holloway; hole 8 Steve Robinson; hole 11 David Corcoran and hole 14 by Roger Vicars for nearest pin on Par 3s. Nearest the pin in 2 on the par 4 holes 3, 6, 10and 16 were won by Steve Robinson, Bob Edwards, David Corcoran and Stafford Pemberton respectively. Nick Berry surprisingly snatched the longest drive from Robbo, while ‘most pars’ were carded by Malcolm Robinson followed by Deryk Williams. Finally, Barbara Pollitt won the Lady´s prize.

FOR A number of years now we have seen golf clubs manufactured that make it very easy for players to get the ball airborne from almost any lie. We have also seen the golf ball fly higher thanks to new manufacturing materials. This has certainly made the game much easier for many players; but has it made it too easy for the really good players?

Fairway bunkers are no longer the hazards they were thanks to how easy it is to get over the lips of the bunkers. Many good players would rather see the ball go into a bunker than the rough because they will get a better lie there than in the long grass. Maybe it’s time to change this. Maybe it’s time to make fairway bunkers in particular the hazards they once were. This in my opinion should be the case for all class of players and not just the good ones.

By making the bunkers a little deeper and have slightly finer sand put into them we would quickly see the skill levels of all players improve rapidly from inside the all-important one hundred yards mark. I would dearly love to see more punishment for those who think golf is all about blasting the ball into the wild blue yonder knowing they will get a reasonable lie no matter where the ball finishes. Let’s see some skill, shotmaking and imagination return to the game.

At The Open Championship at Royal St. Georges we saw bunkers that were exactly what they were supposed to be: hazards. Not many times were players able to hit long irons into greens and secure birdies and par easily. I would dearly love to see more golf courses follow this example, not just on tour but here in Spain where we play our golf as well.

At one time going into a bunker was something to be feared - you would not know what to expect.

I am now as bad as many; if I miss a fairway I would much rather see the ball in a fairway bunker because I know I will almost certainly get a better lie and be able to get the ball close to where I want to put it than if I was in the rough.

SAMM-MABS Cancer Support Race 2011 THE SAMMS/MABS Cancer Support Race is to take place 25th September 2011, with the closing date for entry Monday 13th September.

The Sailing Association of Mar Menor invites boat owners to compete to raise money for the MABS Cancer Support Charity - the organizing authority will be the Sailing Association Mar Menor.

The event is open to all Cruisers, Dinghies and Sports Multihulls in two classes: Class 1 Cruisers: which are defined as a yacht, single or multihull, with fixed permanent accommodation for purpose of sleeping, whether fit for that purpose or not.

Class 2 Dinghies and Sport Multihull: defined

as an open sailing boat, without fixed sleeping accommodation.

The handicap system used for both classes will be Portsmouth Yardstick. Vessels without a PY Number will be given one by the SAMM Race Committee using information from the entry form, design details and PY handicaps used by other clubs.
