Anger surges over electricity THE COST of upgrading the electrical power supply to homes has shocked and angered neighbours told they must pay thousands of Euros for the work. by Jack Troughton
They’re back
The pink pond
By Jack Troughton SPRING HAS arrived on the Marina Alta signalled by a flurry of activity on Calpe’s salt lake Las Salinas as birds return to the wetland to feed and breed. Flamingos are currently stepping out in numbers and there were about 150 this week. The wading birds – they are the pink balls of cotton wool when seen at a distance – do not breed at Calpe. However, this annual visiting population – there were more than 250 last summer – are seen by experts as a sign the waters are in good health with a plentiful food supply.
POWER GIANT Iberdrola has been installing state of the art digital meters to homes across the Costa Blanca – the highly accurate machines ‘tripping’ when a building’s ‘potencia’ is exceeded. It has frustrated people who found they suffer a ‘power out’ when using the same amount of household appliances as before because of the sensitivity of the meters. But while increasing the energy potential of the electrical supply can be a bureaucratic bore and cost several hundreds of Euros – Iberdrola says the customer bears the load – some Orba residents found the estimates were much higher. Four neighbours on the La Plana urbanisation have their electricity meters housed together in the road outside. When a fire broke out in the meter box they suffered a power cut and the original meters were replaced by the digital equivalents. The power supply began to trip
and to upgrade they were told they needed a report from a recognised electrician and the meters must be moved to be on each resident’s individual property. And because of the geography of the street – the houses are built into a steep hillside – the estimates varied between 4,000€ and 12,000€. POWER Pensioner Deidre Stewart said she was told she must pay 6,000€ - like all the 100 homes on La Plana, the power potential of her home is 2.2kw. “This is nothing more than a money making exercise. If you want more power you not only have to pay more on your bill you get charged for the upgrade – I had better buy shares in Iberdrola very quickly. “The meters were originally sited by Iberdrola so why the change? What is really annoying for everyone is most residents know nothing of this yet – on this estate alone it would mean a big payday for the electric company.” Continued on page 3

Town rides out crisis by Jack Troughton CALPE MAYOR Cesar Sanchez believes the outlook is “positive” for the Marina Alta resort as it recovers from the gloom of the economic recession. Shops are opening, tourists are returning – Calpe has the highest occupancy rates on the Costa Blanca – while there is new investment; McDonalds is opening a restaurant, a five star hotel is being constructed, and a private health clinic has just opened following a four million Euro investment. “All the signs are positive,” said the mayor. “We have passed the worst stage and now things are improving. “I am very optimistic and I believe wholeheartedly in the possibilities Calpe has in what we can offer – our natural surroundings and our people.” Mr Sanchez grew up in Calpe and his first job was answering the telephone at the town hall. “I like to tell students this because they can see that anything is possible.” He became mayor four years ago leading a PP in coalition with independents and found a town which was “paralysed” – and was tasked with dealing with over 60 million Euros of debt and corruption. “We are now staring a new period in the history of Calpe. Now we have to bring stability, transparency, opportunity, responsibility in the economy...and open government.” FIRST CHAPTER In an exclusive interview with RTN, the mayor said he was now able to “put a lid” on the first chapter in the history of his team running the town. The first priority had been getting a grip on the town hall budget and insuring council projects were not left “half done” and try to help residents – especially via social services in difficult times. “We have also opened the town hall to everyone living in Calpe, it doesn’t matter what language they speak. For exam-

ple, we have a multilingual website where there are all the contacts for the town hall and even the budget.” Mr Sanchez said once the accounts were “sorted out” his priority had been to improve the town itself “making it a pleasanter place for citizens who live here and more attractive to tourism.” He said he had “concrete” ideas how to continue the reformation of Calpe but accepted before starting the second period of his plans, there was the small matter of the May local elections. “Now Calpe has two options; to go back to what it was like in the past or to continue to improve things with the present government, to have a town with a stable moderate and responsible government,” said Mr Sanchez. “If people want Calpe to carry on improving, they must vote – I hope people get off their backsides and vote because now more than ever, the future of Calpe is in the hands of the residents.”
Continued from front page SHE ADDED: “I know businesses rule the world as well as politicians but there comes a time when they should not be so stupid – if they want to upgrade the system and upgrade the service, please do – then charge us for what we use. “If we were in a block of flats meters would be in boxes together so what is the difference? The answer is they would not make any money.” Deidre said people she had spoken to were incensed. “I have absolutely no intention paying but a lot of people are worried.” However, she said there was a “frightening” side to the problem. Registered disabled because of her failing sight, if the power is cut her emergency ‘red button’ also fails. “But I cannot be the only disabled person in Spain who needs electricity for the emergency call button,” she added. “Does Iberdrola realise that Spain is part of the EU and it cannot make up the rules as it goes along?” Neighbour Alan Lewis told RTN he had been quoted 4,000€ to upgrade the power supply. “It is a bit of a shock when you open the letter and see figures for this sort of money. “No one seems to know about this policy where a meter must be on your property – the blackmail part is you cannot have an upgrade until you have the work done and inspected.” Alan said until the new digital meters were installed there was never a problem but asked where people were suddenly expected to find the money to upgrade. “They put the meters where they are in the first place, we didn’t. I think it is disgusting a big company is acting like this.”

Crisis for Spain’s graduates
A REPORT released last week by the Conference of Social Councils shows that only one in two university graduates secure a job role that requires the qualifications they worked so hard to earn.
Spain’s scholars are turning to work overseas
by Jan Gamm MANY GRADUATES leave university only to find work as waiters, shop assistants or labourers despite earning degrees in a range of subjects that qualify them for employment in skilled or even specialised jobs, rendering half of Spain’s workforce ‘over-qualified’. The industry that offers the highest employment rate is the health sector while the lowest rate is in the humanities discipline. 87.9% of graduates take jobs in Management and Administration that do not require their qualifications. 85.4% working in tourism have degrees in other fields. Spain’s young scholars are increasingly turning to work overseas in order to earn a decent salary and also to achieve job satisfaction. Performing the role they are trained for is becoming a priority for the brightest of Spain’s graduates and who can blame them for wanting a career in their specialist subject and one in which they feel they could excel. The alternative is spending what many graduates see as wasted years earning just enough to exist, instead of commanding a higher wage in recognition of a specialist degree.
Joint operation drug bust A MASSIVE drug haul of 800kilos has been seized by the Guardia Civil in a corroboration with the French National Gendarmerie. 12 people were detained, four in the Murcia region, in operation ‘Lunettes’, as they attempted to ship hashish from Morocco into Spain and throughout Europe. The investigation has now been turned over to Instruction Court 1 in San Javier (Murcia) and the Grand Instruction Tribunal in Nimes, France.
Picassent fire forces evacuation
A FIRE with toxic smoke forced the evacuation of residents in Picassent, Valencia on Sunday. Flames swept through a depot used to store agricultural chemicals, unleashing a giant toxic smoke plume visible 25km away. The fire began in the Jorge Martinez farm supply store at around 6pm and at 8pm residents were advised to either stay indoors or leave the area. The blaze continued to rage through the evening, finally brought under control by 30 fire fighters from Silla, Catarroja, Paterna, Requena and Chiva at 10pm. An investigation has been launched into the cause of the fire. There were no injuries.

Ryanair unveils its routes from Castellón
Castellon Airport
by Jan Gamm RYANAIR HAS come to the rescue of Castellón Airport, which first opened in 2011 but lay dormant for years, eventually achieving the nickname ‘Spain’s Biggest White Elephant,’ more famous for its frankly strange and hideous 300,000€ ‘Fabra’ statue near the entrance that resembles a cartoon monster with an aeroplane sticking out of it than for its use as a centre for
modern air transport… Ryanair is now sweeping away the cobwebs at Castellón and has unveiled its flight schedule, offering reservations from this week starting 12th March at fares of around 31.99€ valid until 10th December, for flights connecting Castellón with Bristol and Stansted, scheduled to begin on 15th September. Ryanair will carry around 60,000 passengers per year from Castellón and create 60 jobs in the process.

Town mourns murder victim by Jack Troughton A COSTA BLANCA community has united in its condemnation of ‘gender violence’ after a 43year-old woman died days after being brutally assaulted in her home. The mother-of-two suffered a fractured skull and a broken arm after allegedly being repeatedly struck with a frying pan by her husband in an attack at an apartment in Javea Old Town on Sunday 1st March. The victim, a Moroccan national, named as Hanane OB was taken to Denia Hospital and remained in a coma in the Intensive Care Unit until her death on Monday. Her husband was arrested at the scene and is now being held in custody by the Guardia Civil on suspicion of murder. Javea Town Hall declared three days of official morning following an extraordinary meeting of the council on Tuesday – attended by members of Hanane’s family and members of the Muslim community – and flags were lowered to half mast. And the local authority passed a motion condemning violence against women “every day of every year” and calling for equality and dignity for every human being “whether male or female”. Expressing the town hall’s condolences, Mayor Jose Chulvi said again there had been a fatal incident of domestic violence and said such incidents went beyond threatening the life of women.
BRUTAL
“Gender violence also attacks the entire population because it restricts the freedom of all women through fear, it violates their dignity and integrity, and it is the most brutal symbol of inequality still in our society between women and men,” said the mayor. “This violence is rooted in a patriarchal system that enables and maintains inequality and subordination of women in all areas and walks of life.” However, Mr Chulvi said modern society could not “close its eyes and remain silent” about the domination of one person by anothMayor er through gender and the “tragically unjust Jose situation” needed to be urgently confronted to Chulvi insure real equality in society. leads a minute’s He underline that the silence and resignation of women and their children was not the answer. silence to “Silence is the best ally of abusers, because it pro- remember the victim vides impunity and the freedom to commit brutal acts. As a society we cannot remain silent.” And the mayor said it was not enough to provide institutional protection to women. “We need men and women to show their revulsion and condemnation.” He said education was the key to changing attitudes along with awareness and prevention – all crucial in ending the “social scourge of gender violence.” Mr Chulvi appealed for any victims of domestic violence to contact the town hall’s Department for Equality, social services, or the police’s special units for help and protection.

Organ shortages force split transplants
A SHORTAGE of donors has led to liver transplants being cleverly ‘shared’ between two patients. by Jan Gamm Spain’s transplant programme is acknowledged to be among the top five countries in the world. Its donation system performs at the highest possible rate of organ transfer from deceased patients to benefit those still living. However, there are simply not enough donated livers to go round so surgeons have developed an alternative technique within surgical transplant that allows two patients to share one donated liver, usually one adult and one child. The shortage of available organs was previously most acute for paediatric patients. There is a lower mortality rate for young patients and therefore a smaller number of donors. Shared organ transplants mean that children no longer have to wait for a whole liver and lives can be saved using reduced-size grafts. In Valencia’s Hospital La Fe between January and February there have been five liver transplants performed with ‘alternative techniques’.
Police arrest two jihadists in Ceuta
SPANISH POLICE have detained two men suspected of preparing to carry out Jihadist attacks in Spain. The arrests took place in the North African enclave of Ceuta. Two residences in the area are currently being searched thought to be connected with the planned attacks.
Four year old in miracle escape
A LITTLE girl aged four who fell from the eighth to the seventh floor of an apartment block in Alicante last Friday was discharged from the Hospital de Sant Joan the following morning with only minor bruising. The accident occurred at 8.30pm in a building on the central Rambla de Mendez Nuñez. The child had escaped death by falling onto a narrow terrace belonging to an empty apartment on the floor below her home. Fire fighters used a vehicle ladder to recover her before she was transferred to hospital.

Smile, smile, smile HUNDREDS OF people are expected to take up the gauntlet and complete the ‘3km Sponsored Challenge’ in aid of charity Make a Smile – with all proceeds helping the kids of EMAUS. by Jack Troughton The walk with a difference is from Javea Port to the Parador Hotel at the Arenal and individuals, families, schools, clubs, businesses and societies
are already backing the idea. The course itself is not long but organiser Bay Radio’s challenge is to come up with an original and imaginative way of completing it on Sunday 12th April – whether it is yoga poses, Zumba dancing, football ‘keepie uppies’, or fancy dress. Television’s antiques expert Mark Stacey will be at the Parador to judge the funniest, most unique and most imaginative before a party in the hotel’s grounds. He will also present the prizes and finishing medals. Sue Nutbrown is organising the day and hopes the money raised will make a real difference as it was being invested in a farm owned by EMAUS at Relleu, near Alicante. “It is being made into a productive farm with the hope of making all the children’s homes much more self sufficient with chickens, olive trees, and vegetables,” she said. SUPPORT
Television’s Mark Stacey
“The idea is to raise enough mon-
ey for Make a Smile to take all the projects forward by five years and to provide a ‘half way house’ for the children leaving the homes aged 18 to help them to adjust. “And my challenge is to make as much money as possible and to make this event one of the biggest fund raisers on the Costa Blanca to date – and other charities are already supporting us.” Sue said the entry fee was 5€ for adults and 3€ for children but sponsorship was important. “If I get 1,000 people to do the challenge and they get an average of 20€ each in sponsorship, we will have done it – we actually hope to get a lot more.” She added: “We have called it the 3km Sponsored Challenge” because life is a challenge everyday for these kids. We want to make a real difference to the kids of EMAUS’ lives.” The event starts on the 12th April at noon. For more information call sue on 679 369 909 or email charity@bayradio.fm. Feeling flush? Try a bob! ACCORDING TO economy boffins, a sure sign that hard times are over is the re-appearance of shorter hair styles for ladies. You might think that’s a trivial shaggy hair story but it is a fact that shorter hair requires more frequent visits to the hair salon to keep the style looking trim and neat. In Spain such visits can range from around 12€ to 30€ for a wash and trim, up to 80€ or 100€ for colour treatments. And while long hair can swept up or plaited to make it look presentable, shorter styles tend to flop or stick out at angles when they grow out even a little. Celebrity fashion is now trending toward shorter styles with Cheryl Fernandez-Versini, Kim Kardashian and Margot Robbie all opting for a crop. So if you see your neighbour stepping out with an adventurous ‘shortie’, chances are she is feeling flush!
Support cancer research CANCER CARE Javea is staging its annual Blue Ribbon Walk to raise money for cancer research on Sunday 29th March starting at 11am. A “casual walk” rather than a race, the start and finish is at the car park near the Cancer Care Shop in Javea Park and the route is via the coast road to the port and back. Most people have been touched by cancer, whether it is family or a friend, and it is an opportunity to show solidarity in the battle against the disease. It is 5€ per person to take part and children and dogs accompanied by an adult are welcome. The official Blue ribbon can be bought on the day or in advance from: Humpty Dumpty; Mimi Hair and Beauty Retail; Heaven; Inn on the Green; Quicksave; or either of the Cancer Care Shops. For more information visit www.cancercarecharitycentre.org
Pups given fighting chance
FIVE TINY puppies are being bottle fed round the clock after being rescued from a rubbish bin by two animal charity supporters. The litter was picked out of a green ‘basura’ bin in Pego after they were heard squealing from inside. Chrissie Edwards, President of the Local Animal Protection Society, said the puppies had been abandoned in an act of “unbelievable cruelty” and had been “rescued from certain death after their owner had thrown them out with the rubbish last Thursday.” She said the two LAPs supporters had managed to retrieve the five puppies. “To make sure they didn’t survive, the plastic bag they were in had been tied at the top. Their fate was either to be suffocated, starved, or crushed by more rubbish.” Chrissie added the charity’s vet Adriana, from Nexo, in Pego, was “very kindly” giving the youngsters “a chance to live” by bottle feeding them every two to three hours night and day. She added: “When they can eat independently, in about four week’s time, they will come to the LAPS Shelter in Pego, ultimately looking for new homes.” LAPS is currently looking for volunteers prepared to spare two to three hours a week to help care for the dogs and cats at the shelter. Anyone interested in joining the charity should ring Kimberley on 662 334 044 or Chrissie on 661 199 270.
Moraira Teulada U3A Walking Football

Family voucher scheme FRESH FOOD for families in need is back on the menu thanks to the Charity Shop of Calpe’s support for the town’s Red Cross. by Jack Troughton The charity – which backs community projects in the Marina Alta resort - has provided 760€ worth of vouchers for families to be used at supermarket Mas y Mas. And the Charity Shop of Calpe has invited Cruz Roja to submit its own shopping list for necessities to be distributed to people still suffering in the economic downturn – such as nappies, cleaning products, and hygiene materials. John Bridge, president of the shop, and Councillor Carole Saunders presented a stack of the 20€ vouchers on Tuesday. They can be
used to purchase meat, fish, vegetables, fruit, and dairy products – but not alcohol or fizzy drinks. The Red Cross is currently supporting between 80 and 90 families and members of the team thanked john for the “marvellous” donation saying the vouchers were important in allowing people a more balanced diet rather than the subsistence basics. The Charity Shop of Calpe has also donated 3,000€ to give the youngsters of the Gargasindi School – which caters for children with special needs – swimming lessons to provide vital exercise.
It also provides ongoing backing for the EMAUs children’s home in the town and the town hall’s Food Bank. The shop itself is to open on Thursday afternoons between 4pm and 7pm from Thursday 9th April. The current sale ends on Wednesday 18th March and the Spring and Summer Collection will be on sale from Friday 20th March. And to help its important fund raising tickets are on sale for the shop’s Easter Raffle with local businesses providing prizes. The draw takes place on Wednesday 1st April at 1pm.

New hospital to slash waiting times
YET ANOTHER brand new hospital is about to be opened in the Gandia area. The new Francesc de Borja de Gandia hospital, located in the Sanxo Llop area, is to open later this month and will double the number of surgeries currently handled by the Health Service in the region. The new facility with its eight operating theatres will be able to accommodate 50 surgical interventions daily and in addition has a further two operating rooms that can be opened in the event of over-spill. State-of-the-art camera technology fitted within the surgical units allows surgeons to be in constant contact with practitioners outside the theatre enabling the latest, intelligent treatments to take place along with instant feedback, without having to refer the patient for more surgery at a later date. And the centre is equipped with a series of wellequipped recovery zones. It is expected that the new hospital will significantly reduce surgical waiting times.

Red Cross magical ride by Jack Troughton VOLUNTEERS FROM Javea’s Roundabout Charity Shop enjoyed a tour of the town’s Red Cross headquarters to witness the organisation’s commitment to the local community. Guide Sandy Tsalikidis took the team around headquarters in Javea Old Town to illustrate how busy the Red Cross team was every day. And the “impressed” visitors also left a 9,000€ donation to help purchase a new adapted minibus used to ferry the elderly and infirm to specialist appointments and day centres – the current vehicle is due to be retired in May. The familiar red uniform of the Red Cross is seen attending events to administer first aid, lifeguards patrol the beaches in summer and man a rescue boat, and the association also runs a fleet of three ambulances for medical emergencies. The charity also runs a much-needed

food bank to support families suffering in the economic crisis – while Javea remains in part a wealthy resort, people are living in poverty. The guests were also shown the classrooms on the upper floor of the Red Cross building. Here children
from poorer families are able to complete homework with the help of ‘learning support’ and are provided with a welcome snack. It is also a place where the unemployed can learn skills and training to improve their job prospects.

Eyes open, wallet shut RECENTLY A mate told me of a fellow who has been doing the rounds in our area, knocking on doors and asking for money to pay for a locksmith as he has either lost his house keys or had his house broken into. He says his property is in a nearby urbanization and gives the sob story that he cannot get enough money from a cash machine to pay the locksmith. He usually asks for 30 to 50 euros. His story seems plausible saying he is from Germany and speaks fluent English. Supposedly this behaviour is not an offence under Spanish law, but the person doing so is offensive. Keep your eyes open and your wallet shut. Huw Thomas, Altea
Life is good SPRING HAS sprung. We had friends from Croydon visiting this past week. We went to the market and had a wonderful time purchasing flowers and some bargains. Afterwards we went for a fantastic menu del dia. Very posh indeed. Then we took a leisurely stroll along the promenade and stopped to enjoy the beautiful sea view while enjoying being with friends and having a lovely cafe con leche. The spring weather was so beautiful, sunny and warm. The police were around to keep would be thieves hiding and not causing trouble. Everything was fantastic. What a beautiful day. You may find this shocking and fall off your chair because there was not a thing to moan and whinge about. Life is good. Robert Murray, Gran Alacant
Unproven I JUST read that St Javier airport has won an award for best small airport despite falling numbers of travellers due to the two budget airlines Ryanair and Easyjet stopping flights into this airport from UK airports in the North, i.e. Liverpool and Manchester, some years ago owing to the uncertainty of its future. Being a regular flier, it was always my airport of choice: local, easy to get to and friendly. I now have no other option but to use Alicante. If Corvera ever opens I will still use Alicante. Why on earth didn’t the Spanish authorities leave well enough alone instead of wasting millions of Euros on this as yet unproven destination…? Mrs B Metcalfe, Pinar de Campoverde, and Chester, UK
Where is the money going? I EXPECTED new construction to have made the pavement noticeably wider along Avda Jaime in Altea. The old and the new appear to be almost exactly the same proportions after the laying of the gas pipe. Perhaps the 340,000€ is actually not being spent as indicated to widen the pedestrian area as the gas supplier is doing all the work. So where is the allotted money going to? Changing and reducing the direction of parking appears to be a very expensive solution if this is the case as well as handing over rate payers’ money to the underground car park owners on an already overpriced facility. HELP in the money JALON VALLEY HELP’s President Elaine Horton and Treasurer Margaret Mooney returned to El Cid a week after the association’s Charity Auction to collect the proceeds.
(from left) Auctioneer Alan with Elaine and Margaret
by Jack Troughton Auctioneer Alan Lewis handed over a cheque – including a generous donation of 300€ - to help those in need in the area. Elaine said together it meant HELP
had cashed in by over 2,600€ and assured Alan and his team the money would be used to make a real difference to those contacting the charity asking for support. HELP’s next function is the Afternoon Tea and Flower Arranging at Mas la Pau,
Lliber, on Thursday 2nd April at 2pm. There is also an Easter Bonnet Competition a challenge for anyone with a hat and some trimmings. Tickets at 10€ are limited, so anyone wishing to attend should email jvevents@hotmail.com as soon as possible.
Recruitment drive THE LIONS Club of Calpe and Benissa is hoping to celebrate its seventh birthday by recruiting new members to help its fund raising and community projects. With current members in full-time employment or spending time in the UK, there is an urgent need to attract new faces – either to give time to help Lions organised events or help out in the charity shop in Calpe, and to attend one meeting a month. Lions gain great ‘job’ satisfaction helping out in the community – whether it is providing food for those in need, taking Christmas gifts to local schools or to youngsters with disabilities – and it is a chance to socialise with a great bunch of people. The next meeting is on Tuesday 14th April at the Tennis Club in Calpe. There is an hour discussing worthwhile causes and the coming diary of events – afterwards there is a meal and the chance to get to know fellow Lions socially. Anyone interested in attending the meeting, the meal, or both, can contact President Bob Sydney on 636 695 569 or Vice President Keith Littlewood on 657 684 094. A warm welcome is assured.
Woman’s Day in Torrevieja THE MUNICIPAL Theatre was filled on Saturday in honour of International Women’s Day. by Keith Nicol The special event was an opportunity for the Mayor to hand out awards to a number of women in the city, on the occasion of International Women’s Day. The ceremony was attended by the Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon, Deputy Provincial Tourism, Joaquín Albaladejo and Councillor Social Welfare and Equality, Tomás Ballester. MC for the evening was torrevejense Francisco Reyes, who stressed the importance of women from all walks of society, while stating that their presence improves the outcome in any capacity, in which they are the majority. Los Costaleros need a few strong men SEMANA SANTA, the Easter processions, are only two weeks away and those men in green, Los Costaleros, still need a few more strong men to boost their ranks. They just have a couple more rehearsals on Wednesday, 18th and 25th March at 7.30pm so you still have time to join in with this proud group of men. This takes place at the Semana Santa Museum, which is located directly behind Restaurant FU, the former Los Arcos Restaurant, in Aguas Neuvas. They actually carry the ‘throne’ to the church on 25th March with the first procession on Monday 30th March and again on Good Friday, 3rd April.” Every year they need a few more strong men to assist with the honour of carrying the huge, one tonne, ‘Jesus in the Garden of Olives’ through Torrevieja’s streets, and anyone interested can contact David directly on: 966 700 056 or email: davidmacsporran@gmail.com.

Happy days with the Land Girls by Jack Troughton WOMENS LAND Army veteran Dorothy Quodling was recruited as a technical advisor for Javea Players upcoming production ‘Lilies of the Land’ because of her first hand experience. Now aged 92, she signed up as a 19year-old from Battersea, and was teamed up with sheepdog Jack first working in Oxfordshire as an assistant shepherd. Dorothy, who has lived in Spain for 30 years and enjoys her retirement living in Javea Port, was quick to book a seat at the Javea Players Studio Theatre for a bitter sweet show that looks at the lives of the female army working the land during the dark days of war. And the play’s director Penny Grant decided it was worth getting some ‘straight from the horse’s mouth’ background of the true adventures of a member of the WLA – an almost forgotten force that only earned official recognition of the contribution to the war effort when survivors were presented with medals in 2008. Dorothy and her friend Peggy – just two of some 80,000 young women

backbreaking work and low pay were amongst the happiest of her life. Lilies of the Land plays at the Javea Players Studio theatre from Monday 6th April to Friday 10th April. Tickets are 10€ and available by calling 96 579 4937 or boxofficejp@gmail.com

Fun Dog Show a howling success! by Patricia Thompson A GREAT idea turned into reality on Sunday 1st March when the Siesta Group at Gata De Gorgos hosted a Fun Dog Show in aid of Costa Blanca Dog Homing and the charities they help and support. Due to the sheer determination of show organiser Sandra Hamnett and the dedicated team at Siesta Group Gata the day ran smoothly and without a hitch. This was helped by the glorious weather and the fact that everyone was there for the same reason - to have fun but most importantly raise some much needed cash. There were more than 70 dogs on site including several needing homing from local groups such as PEPA, SCAN, AKIRA and the Benidorm Dog Shelter - all were perfectly behaved and loving the attention they were getting. The rescue dogs were the first class to be shown in the ring giving the audience the chance to appreciate how lovable they all are and the rescue groups the chance to introduce their dogs, raising awareness of the tireless work they do. The next classes included Best Puppy, Best Golden Oldie, Prettiest Bitch, Most Handsome Dog, Fancy Dress, Waggiest Tail to name a few… The show was overseen and judged by KC-Reg-
istered Judge Bradley Richards who very kindly travelled from Albox for the event. There were some very nifty costumes in the Fancy Dress class, won paws down by a small Pirate. The atmosphere was relaxing as spectators and participants sat in the lovely grounds and had refreshments, chatted to friends old and new and compared doggy and rescue stories. To round the day off the raffle was drawn and there was a frenzy as people collected their prizes kindly donated by local businesses including UK Supplies in Javea, Siesta Group and Davids Chippy. Generous donations of food, dog bowls, blankets etc were also made, equally shared amongst the Rescue Groups. The total cash amount raised on the day was 659.70€, passed on to Becky Sweetman of Costa Blanca Dog Homing to distribute accordingly. Overall a very enjoyable day for all concerned with outstanding results for the charity. Anyone wanting more information regarding Costa Blanca Dog Homing or any of the rescue groups can get in touch with Becky via Facebook or if you wish to make a donation you can do so via their paypal account costablancadoghoming@yahoo.com and their Charity number is CV-01502413-A. This could be a regular event – watch this space!

Getting answers in Spain HAVE YOU heard about this useful lunch seminar that takes place regularly on the Costa Blanca? In the last couple of months experts from five local companies have answered over 800 questions from people who have attended. This is fantastic and a great opportunity. How wonderful would it be to be able to ask the experts in various fields about how things work in Spain? Once again the highly respected UK & Spanish companies based in Costa Blanca are inviting all British, Irish & European nationals, spending time or living in Spain, to a meeting to answer all the questions they have regarding life in Spain. Some of the topics that will be covered will be as follows:How can I make my savings grow? How will the changes to pensions affect you? What are the changes to thresholds, limits and ages for occupational or personal pensions? Inheritance law and taxes in Spain: what is best for me and my family? Wills. Do I need a Spanish or UK will or both? If you are transferring money regularly to Spain, where can you get the best currency exchange rates? How can I get the best deal for Landlines, Mobiles, British TV & the internet?
How does the Spanish funeral system affect people from the UK? Experts from five companies will also be providing professional advice on Tax, Pensions, Investments, Currency Exchange, Spanish Law, Wills and Funeral Plans. Everybody who wishes to attend can send their questions in advance and the answer will be provided at the meeting. How fantastic is that!! We could have all done with this type of event ages ago. Once all the questions have been answered then everybody will get a free lunch at Quesada Fish & Chips in Quesada and Villamartin. The events will begin at 12 noon on Wednesday 18th March in Quesada and Tuesday 24th March in Villamartin: lunch will be served at 1.30pm. Paquita’s Country Club raises cash for MABS
(from left) Simon Martin, Branch Chairman Bob Hunt and Branch President Gaby Ferenczy at the AGM
RAFA’s Benidorm posting by Jack Troughton MEMBERS OF the North Costa Blanca Branch of the Royal Air Forces Association enjoyed a weekend in Benidorm for both business and pleasure. Hotel Mediterraneo was the group’s base for three days and the Annual General Meeting – although during the RAFA stay, members enjoyed wining and dining, shopping, and a trip
to Benidorm Palace. The meeting heard the branch remained on an economically sound footing, had made a healthy contribution to the annual Wings Appeal, and fulfilled its obligations to the association’s welfare programme – as well as organising an extensive social programme. The branch also said farewell to Overseas Area Director Simon Martin who was retiring after 24 years serv-
ice with RAFA and in particular, the European Area. Simon thanked the invitation to the weekend with his wife Janet, and after giving a short resume of his time with the RAF and RAFA, he wished the branch well for the future. The branch presented Simon with a Spanish leather ‘manbag’ to carry essential gear during his post-retirement travels.
PAQUITA’S COUNTRY Club, which meets at the El Cid Restaurant and Bar in Benidoleig, recently held a very successful Medium Night with Kenny Corris, raising 800€ for MABS Cancer Support Group. Masmovil:
the expats’ mobile operator of choice
Jessica Öhlen, the company International Marketing Manager
TO KNOW more about MÁSMÓVIL, recently awarded ‘Best Virtual Mobile Operator 2014’ we interviewed Swedish Jessica Öhlen, the company International Marketing Manager who joined MÁSMÓVIL in October 2013. How would you describe MÁSMÓVIL to people that have not heard about you? I think many people have heard of MÁSMÓVIL and know that we are a mobile operator with very cheap rates but there are still relatively few that know that MÁSMÓVIL is an operator focused on international clients and trying to provide personalised service and products for people staying in Spain for parts of the year. I still get people who are very surprised when I tell them about our founders being expats themselves (from Norway and Austria) and that we have a customer service in six languages. In fact, MÁSMÓVIL has been awarded Best Virtual Mobile Operator of 2014. What does MÁSMÓVIL offer that other operators in the same category do not? Besides being the only operator out there that can solve our customers’ problems in six languages, we also offer the cheapest rates in Spain. We can proudly say that we have the cheapest calling and internet plan on the market. 1 GB and 0 cents/minute for 5€ per month incl. IVA. 95% of satisfied customers is a very high figure, how do you achieve that? A company policy I learned very early on at MÁSMÓVIL is that we centre all we do around our clients: Something as simple as having one single Customer Service representative solving your problems without putting you on hold or passing you on to other departments has been greatly appreciated. Offering our international clients help in a language they feel comfortable with (English, Scandinavian, Finnish, German and Russian) has also helped boost satisfaction tremendously.
As a company founded by an Austrian and a Norwegian and a clear commitment to the market of foreigners in Spain, we assume that your workforce comprises many diverse nationalities? Yes, that is correct. When I first started at MÁSMÓVIL I realised very quickly that having an international background and understanding what it’s like to be an expat in a new country is incredibly important in order to offer the best solutions for our international clients. That’s why our international marketing department is run by expats, our sales department speaks numerous languages and why our Call Centre offers help in six languages… and of course, we count on a large number of distributors that speak multiple languages. How many MÁSMÓVIL sales distributors are there now specialising in the international market? There are many all over the country! The easiest thing is to go to our website where we have a search function enabling you to enter a city and a preferred language at your nearest store. We are very proud of our website that can be viewed in English, Swedish and German, where you can find all of our products and get free shipping within Spain. Why should our English and German readers choose MÁSMÓVIL? What products can you offer them? I know I am biased as I work for MÁSMÓVIL, but I do believe that we offer a combination of benefits that other phone companies don’t – amazing multi-lingual customer service; no contract time commitments; cheapest plans; an option of ‘pausing’ your line when you go home, and a great team that works hard to improve services every day! Find out more about MÁSMÓVIL plans and offers by phoning the toll-free number 1473 today for the name of your nearest MÁSMÓVIL agent, or visit www.masmovil.es/en. Free shipping is included online!

Building raised beds
by
Dick Handscombe Holistic gardener and author
SEVERAL READERS have recently asked about they could do to grow things better, or indeed at all in some cases, because they had only shallow poor soil. The answer for all was to construct some raised beds for growing herbs fruit trees, flowering plants and vegetables. So we thought it worth repeating a column we published a couple of years ago. WHAT IS A RAISED BED? In our popular vegetable growing book ‘Growing Healthy Vegetables in Spain’ we defined a raised bed as an elevated area of deep rich soil mix built up within retaining walls to allow it to be worked with less bending.. There are four basic types. A four sided box constructed so that soil can be worked from all sides without walking on it. A three sided box built onto an existing wall. A narrow terrace on a sloping site. A series of raised beds on a sloping site as illustrated. HOW DEEP SHOULD THE SOIL BE? a. A minimum height of 30cm will provide a depth of soil sufficient for the roots of most vegetable plants and many flowering plants and shrubs. b. A maximum height of 70 to 80cm would allow the bed to be worked without much bending and also from a stool, chair or wheelchair. The most comfortable height will depend on the height of the person or persons who will be working the raised bed. Deep beds can be used for trees and even palms. c. Any intermediate heights depending on the materials you have available for building the walls and the amount of good soil/compost/manure available or you are willing to buy in. HOW WIDE AND LONG SHOULD THE BED BE?
Width of beds. a. A maximum width of 1.5m if the layout of your raised bed/beds will allow you to work from both sides. b. A maximum width of 70 to 80cm if the raised bed is against a wall or hedge which will only allow it to be worked from one side. If you build raised beds any wider you will need to walk on the soil which will consolidate it and defeat the reason for building the raised beds in the first place. Length of beds. The length of a raised bed can be anything from one metre to twenty metres or more. However it may be more practical to design a layout with several shorter beds with the space between wide enough to accommodate a wheelbarrow or wheelchair.. WHAT CAN RAISED BEDS BE MADE FROM? The walls could be constructed with railway sleepers, long logs, old doors or panels, dry stone walls, cemented brick or rocks, aggregate blocks or peat blocks. The advantages and disadvantage of each are discussed in Chapter 3.5 of ’Growing Healthy Vegetables in Spain’. We prefer long lasting cemented stone, rendered block walls or wooden railway sleepers. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF RAISED BEDS? The practical benefits are as follows. a. You can use them for a wide range of plantings including: A small vegetable patch. A herb collection. A small orchard of fruit trees. A collection of roses. The base for a rockery or water garden. Mixed herbaceous and shrub beds. Collections of succulents.
b. You do not need to walk on the soil which means that you can use every square centimetre for growing crops. Therefore the soil will not be compacted by your weight. c. They can be filled with a soil/sand/compost/manure mix which is fertile, well draining and easy to work and unlikely to be compacted by heavy rains followed by hot baking sun. d. The paths between and around the beds can be clear of weeds and mud. They can either be pointed rock slabs, cm of stone chippings laid over black plastic sheeting or trodden down deep straw. e. You can use them in a garden which has no topsoil. Even on solid rock or a previously concreted area. f. A drip or porous pipe irrigation system can be easily set up. g. Anything can be grown in soil depths of 40cm or more including potatoes and Jerusalem artichokes. h. Spreading vegetables such as courgettes, cucumbers, trailing tomatoes, capers and nasturtiums can be cascaded down the outside of the walls to reduce the space taken up on the top of the bed. i. It is easy to install tunnel cloches made to fit the beds for winter plant protection and summer shading for leaf crops that can wither in the sun. j. They are easy to extend if you have the space. k. A number of raised beds could be hidden away in various parts of the garden if you do not want a large dedicated area. l. They are particularly user friendly for child, aged and infirm gardeners. The ‘ten tub’ vegetable garden we describe in Chapter 3.9 of ‘Growing Healthy Vegetables in Spain’ which uses large size builders buckets as mini raised beds has additional advantages for vegetable growers and can also be used to grow a ten tree orchard in a small space.

Clients affected at the Almanzora Country Club Development (Huma Mediterraneo), get the money paid back from Banco Popular. A WHILE ago, White Baos lawyers started a joint action on behalf of clients that had bought in Almanzora Country Club development, from Huma Mediterraneo SL, against Banco Popular. OUR CUSTOMERS had paid their deposits to the account that this developer had at Banco Popular. Despite having promised to hand over individual guarantees covering the money paid in the purchase of these properties off plan, as required by Law 57/68, neither the developer nor the bank did so. As we reported at the time, White Baos Lawyers claimed the refund of money paid against Popular bank, as they issued the general bank guarantee line for the urbanization and it was also the entity that had opened the special account where buyers (consumers) paid the deposits as per the purchase
contracts signed. We won the first instance judgment, and we are now awaiting the decision of the Provincial Court of Murcia, as the Bank has appealed the judgement. However, provisional execution of the judgment was requested by some customers, and the good news is these customers have already received back the principal paid to the bank, pending the final judgment of the Court Provincial de Murcia, whom we trust will ratify the judgment of the courts of Totana. So, congratulations to all our customers who have already received back a large part of the money paid. If the Audiencia court confirms the previous court order, they will also receive interests, expenses
and court costs, etc. We encourage all persons who may be in a similar situation, to send us information about their case, so we can study it on their behalf. To assess the case, we would need the following: .-Copy of the contracts signed with the promoter. .-Copy of payments made to the promoter or developer, where the developer’s bank account where the money was paid must be shown. It would be important to know if other buyers at the same complex paid into this same bank account. .-Confirmation, if known, whether any bank gave bank guarantees to any of the buyers in the promotion. If you have lost money paid in buying a property off plan in Spain, our firm can help, contact us.

Banco Sabadell praises IMF the reformed economy approves THE PRESIDENT of Banco Sabadell, Josep Oliu, says that despite the real estate economy of the Valencian Community being hard hit throughout the crisis the region can look forward this year to a growth percentage on a par with the rest of Spain at 2.6%. Unemployment is forecast to fall from 23.4% to 22%. Oliu was speaking at the Forinvest fair organised by the Association for the Advancement of Management (APD) in Valencia. He said: “Spain has done a lot of homework and wrought major reforms, now perceived as one of the best economies in the world, while three years ago it was the worst.”

– Deadline day Pensioners Bonds
THERE ARE just 8 weeks left for you to apply for the UK Governments 65+ Pensioner Bonds. IT HAS been widely reported that this offer by the NSI has been one of the most popular ever. This is not surprising considering the returns offered for the 3 year Bond are 4% gross per annum GAURANTEED providing a safe home for £10,000 whilst getting a real rate of return in excess of inflation. The 1 year Bond offers less at 2.8% gross for an additional £10,000 but this is still ahead of inflation and YES these are available for Ex-Pats that are fiscal resident in Spain.
It is very difficult to predict what is around the corner with the UK elections coming up so having a safe haven for your cash with a real rate of return is definitely worth considering. That said there has been a lot of optimism in the markets lately with the FTSE reaching record highs and many experts predicting a surge in the markets even further once the 7000 ceiling has been smashed but I would offer a word of caution there could be a big dip if the uncertainty of a hung parliament happens or even another coalition agreement.
There is also the expectation of a flood of cash becoming available for people to spend or save in the next tax year as more people are going to have access to their pension funds. This can only lead to lower saving rates being offered and inflation increasing as spending by the general public increases. If you would like more information on the UK governments 65+ Pensioner Bond or just simply want a sit down
and a face to face discussion about your savings then do not hesitate to email or phone me, often just a reassuring review is all that is needed for some people. I am available to see you in your home or in our office in Javea. If you need advice or have any questions regarding the above you can contact me on 657 684 094 or email keith.littlewood@blacktowerfm.com

Rejuvenate your body and face: a wish come true THE STRESSES of daily life combined with excess sun are the skin’s worst enemy, leading to premature aging. In a society where youth is everything, modern medicine provides us with a number of treatments and techniques to recover the lost years with natural and lasting results. In the last decade, the demand for facial cosmetic procedures has increased considerably. This is mostly due to the advance of minimally invasive surgery complemented by modern lasers and other technologies that manage and reduce post-operative discomfort to a minimum, achieving natural results and cutting down inconvenient convalescent time. At Torrevieja Quiron Hospital the most popular treatments is blepharoplasty, which corrects puffiness and dark circles, crow’s feet and sagging eyelids in one intervention, minimizing risks and halving recovery time, an invisible lifting of the face at the tail of the eyebrow and adjacent tissues, rejuvenating the appearance and producing an attractive, subtle expression.
SHAPING THE BODY Achieving a great body is now a reality thanks to high precision applications that enable the re-shaping of the silhouette, reducing cellulite and reducing flaccidity. The most common methods used are ultrasonic, laser and radiofrequency. Before the operation, the patient is scanned for fat tissue so that traumatic incisions, stitches and large scars are avoided. The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia, does not require hospitalisation and recovery is just 24h. Finally where fat was extracted a specific massage is effected with a motorized roller to homogenize the skin surface. Aesthetic breast surgery remains one of the most technical demands, with a high level of satisfaction, making women feel more comfortable and confident. Factors such as time, breast-feeding, weight loss or diseases such as breast cancer can alter the size and shape of the breast, requiring reparation surgery. Breast augmentation is done through a simple surgical procedure in which the size is increased by cohesive gel prosthesis, CEE marking in top international brands, or the patients’ own fat. Excess volume in the breast can cause damage to the spine, pain in the base of the neck and shoulders as well as difficulties in lymphatic circulation. Breast reduction achieves the size and shape the patient desires, removing excess fat, mammary glands and breast skin, alleviating pressure the burden and at the same time improving aesthetics. The breast lift or mastopexy is indicated in women experiencing fallen breasts. If there is a lack of volume this may also be corrected with prosthesis. Before having an operation it is necessary to perform a diagnostic check to rule out any problems and explain details of the procedure, alternatives, discuss possible discomfort and complications and to know what to expect from your surgery. In the interest of safety and for best results these techniques must be applied by a specialist surgeon in a hospital environment. For more information call 966 92 57 61 or visit www.quiron.es.

showbiz goss YET ANOTHER internet survey was done last week, and the question was ´should marijuana be legalised? And 76% of the people who took part said yes. This now leads me on to the relevant story, as the Ben & Jerry Company have admitted to be considering making a tub of cannabis flavoured ice-cream. Ben Cohen said “Makes sense to me, you know, combine your pleasures,” love you Ben. MY FEELINGS about reality shows are well documented, but I´d like to take you back to 2002 when Ozzie Osbourne was short of cash, and the reality show that set the benchmark for such televisual delights. If you watched ´The Osbournes´ you might recall ´secret daughter´ Aimee, whom we never actually met - well she´s only popped up promoting her record ´Raining Gold ´ something that could well now happen for her. THE ´AMERICAN IDOL´ circus rode into Detroit last week, and this crass, half-assed TV show masquerading as musical entertainment pulled a coup when they invited local lady ´Queen of Soul´ Aretha Franklin to be part of the show, and of course her performance was given a standing ovation. Judge Jennifer Lopez said to the contestants “If you pay attention, you´ll learn something today, I know I´ll be paying attention,” bit twee J-Lo.

A Celia Imrie rant that’s well worth your attention! IN 2012 The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel was a surprise hit at the box-office, and now the follow up ´The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel´ has just been released. The film features a who´s who of top British acting talent, including Celia Imrie, a lady whose name you might not recognise but who´s face you will certainly know from her many roles on TV alongside Victoria Wood. Celia was in the hilariously funny Dinnerladies, played various characters in the sketch show Victoria Wood; As Seen On TV, and was quite wonderful as Miss Babs in the spoof soap opera Acorn Antiques. She is here today on the back of an interview she gave to US magazine Glamour in which she ´let loose´ on, amongst other subjects, the frustratingly slow pace of British TV shows. She singled out crime drama Broadchurch saying, “I found it all rather grim, and also rather boring,” before adding “quite frankly, I think English television is rather boring these days, sometimes I’ll sit there shouting, ‘Get on with it!’ at the TV.” Then my ´let loose´ statement kicked in big-time... Talking about equal rights for women Celia said, “Those who complain about getting wolf whistled should ´lighten up´ - I’m thrilled if I’m whistled at, course I am,” then easing into her natural comedic mode added; “People have become so moany, and what about department stores displaying ´wall-to-wall pink´ girls’ clothing - where are the tomboys of our generation? … and the whole thing of calling little girls ‘princesses’ is just so terribly wrong.” Priceless stuff Celia! You might not agree with Celia, but personally I find it rather refreshing when somebody is prepared to stand up and be counted.

Regular guy Mark David Christenson who pranked hed won an Oscar and got filmed by New Media Rockstars walking about with his fake statuette said, “People were so excited, and I got into all the movies for free!” Alrighty!
BEAUTY AND the Beast was written by French novelist JeanneMarie Leprince de Beaumont in 1756 and Disney are quite some way down the road of producing a live-action musical of the iconic tale. Dan Stevens, who plays Matthew Crawley in Downton Abbey, is to be the Beast and Emma Watson the Beauty. “My six year old self is on the ceiling, heart bursting … time to start some singing lessons,” she said.

Kids are driving me mad My teenagers are driving me crazy with their constant use of smart phones and tablets. There is never a time when they don’t have them in their hand. Mealtimes are a nightmare - we can’t sit down as a family without the continual beeping of text messages, and obsession with updating their Facebook pages. I grew up without these things, and despair at the youngsters today. When I tell them to put them away they just roll their eyes at me, and don’t take me seriously. I agree, the use of smart phones etc has got out of hand, and we are all becoming very anti-social as a result. The key here is to make some rules and stick to them. For example, no phones at mealtimes. No going on the Internet after say 7.30pm (after homework has been done), and switch off the wifi completely. If they don’t think you are serious, take away their pocket money. You must stand firm and keep to your word. Write to Sara in confidence. A pseudonym will be used if you wish. Sara reads all letters and can give a personal reply. Email your question to agonyaunt@roundtownnews.com or Sara is available for private consultations, telephone 633 614 476.

What should I do? I was adopted as a child. My adopted parents weren’t happy and soon split up. I’ve been passed from one foster home to another since. Now my birth mother wants to get in touch. I don’t want to meet her. I feel I have been abandoned by everyone. Yet, I can’t stop thinking about her. Apparently I have this big family that I never knew about. I am making my own way through life now, working nights to pay for my college training to become a Chef. I don’t know whether I can get my head around this ‘whole new family thing’ just yet. If you are not ready to meet your real Mother just yet, then that is OK. Write a letter to her, explaining that for now, you are trying to sort out your life, but you will keep her letter and hope one day to get in touch. Don’t make the letter an angry one, keep it short but friendly, so that the door is always open if you change your mind.

Arenal Volcano
Costa Rica
COSTA RICA, in South America, named by Columbus who believed that there was gold to be found there. THIS COUNTRY features on many a wish list and for obvious reasons. It has a year round fabulous climate, has been awarded some of the highest tourism awards to be achieved on TripAdvisor, and is the most peaceful of countries, boasting to not have an army!
La Fortuna waterfall
The Number 2 hotel in the World was Costa Rica´s Nayara Hotel, Spa and Gardens in La Fortuna by the Arenal Volcano. The Arenal Volcano is one of Costa Rica´s most notable features. It resides within a national park and although it fortunately entered into a resting phase in 2010 with no more eruptions, it is still a stunning sight, framing the skyline with perfect symmetry. The whole area has a host of activities to do from hiking to water rafting for the more active, and excursions to the charming town of La Fortuna nearby. The nearby National Park is made up of primarily rainforest and the variety of birdlife and flora and fauna available is incredible. Besides hiking and birdwatching, there are also possibilities for canoeing, fishing, horse riding, and visiting the stunning 70m drop La Fortuna waterfall. For the budding Botanist, there is no better destination! There are actually botanical gardens close by with over 2,500 species of plants. Also near Arenal are the Venado Caves, another world. 1.5 miles of stalagmites, stalactites and subterranean waters. Another beautiful place in Costa Rica, but a complete contrast to the lowlands of Arenal is the sun drenched Caribbean coast of Tortugero. There are no roads leading to here, so quite unusually (all part of the fun on holiday!) it is accessed by boat from the town of Moin, or a short plane ride from San Jose. The village is small with a few hotels, houses and but with the superb Tortuguero wildlife park, very varied, with long wide beaches, canals perfect for spotting crocodiles (if you want to!) and one of the most important breeding grounds of the green sea turtle.

The sun drenched Caribbean coas
Just an hour from the busy town of San José are the La Paz Waterfall Gardens in the Central Highlands area of Costa Rica. This is another area rich in bio diversity due to the altitude of between 4,000 and 5,000 feet so both cloud forest and rain forest exist. This is a truly magical day out you that will always remember. There is a the largest butterfly observatory in the world, a serpentarium, a frog pond, 5 waterfalls, and my personal favourite, hummingbird gardens. I still remember many years ago standing watching a hummingbird on a bridge in the South of France for as long as I could, so to watch 24 species of hummingbirds feed, and observe them; just amazing. Do you have a Bucket List? Do you have that wish list of places you want to still go to? If Costa Rica is not on it, I imagine it is because you were not really aware that such a beautiful, peaceful, and inexpensive place existed. This country has such a variety of different options to explore that if you are able to…go.. while you can… I doubt you will regret it! Packages to Costa Rica are available from Worldwide Horizons from 1490€ pp, contact 966761492 for more information.

iPhone storage PC freezing HI AUNTY: I have an iPhone 4 with 6Gb. I have closed lots of Apps but still it says I have used 5.0GB and only 360MB left. Where has the other 740MB gone? But when I look at usage it shows 600MB for photos 166 for Facebook. 97 for Google etc. only adding up to 1.4GB. Where has the other 4.6GB gone? Regards, Robert Aunty says: You are not missing any storage space. Don’t forget that the iPhone needs to run the IOS operating system, which will take up some storage, as will any other system required applications. Although your personal storage area may only show “1.4gb”, this may only be data in your personal area, and not any apps or music stored elsewhere. People also often confuse storage space and memory space. Closing apps will stop the apps running in “memory” but it will not remove them from storage.
HI AUNTY VIRUS: My PC has started to freeze when in use and it seems to be when I have several files open or if I open some web pages. The PC stops working completely (the screen continues to show what I have been working on) but nothing else can be done, it will not even shut down. However, after several minutes it becomes active again and I can continue where I left off. According to Task Master my CPU usage hits 100% and Memory hits the top of the scale. My suspicion is that there is a problem with the RAM but everything I could find to check tells me everything is okay. I have run antivirus and spyware and they show no problems. Any suggestions? Regards, David Aunty says: If you have several things open and your PC freezes it is usually a sign that your PC is running out of memory. This can be difficult for me to know, as I do not know what spec memory you currently have, or what version of windows and other programs you are running) In most cases, PCs will then use Virtual Memory, where instead of using actual RAM, it will use the hard drive for “temporary RAM”. This can cause the PC to be “slow and unresponsive” as it writes and reads things from Virtual Memory. There are a few things you can do to help solve this: Don’t opens lots of programs and files at once, don’t use, stop loading, or uninstall any unnecessary programs - is the side bar really essential?, change the virtual memory options or buy more memory Response: Thanks for the info, it has been very useful.
Help with laptop DEAR AUNTY: I wonder if you could help me with my laptop? For the last few days I’ve been getting a message: ‘machineld creator.app.error.report contents. c/documents/admin/locals’. It also mentions ‘avast/ avquidx.dll’? I would appreciate your help in this matter. Many thanks - Noel. Aunty says: My investigations suggest the error message from ‘machine id creator’ actually comes from AVG - another anti-virus program. It would suggest that you have the remnants of a previously installed AVG, and this is conflicting with your Avast (hence the ‘avast/avquidx.dll’). So your previous AVG has not been fully uninstalled, or you still have part of that installation, like AVG toolbar, still installed. And the two anti-virus programs are conflicting, hence the error message. So I think you would need to clean up whichever program you wish to use, and make sure the other is not installed, or has any parts left.

spanish Use of “ser” and “estar” - part 3 Age Concern Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin
We’ll start off this week by reiterating the difference between the use of “ser” and “estar”, namely that “ser” describes “who” and “what” and “estar” describes “how” “where” or “when”. We have looked at a few specific examples of this, and this week we will explore the differences further. Always remember that there is often no hard and fast rule, it can be a question of what you actually want to say, and also, whilst I’m being nice and reassuring, remember that the Spanish are quite used to foreigners getting the two verbs mixed up, so can usually figure out what you’re trying to say, without you needing to feel too embarrassed. Here are some more specific examples of the difference between these two verbs “to be”, when used with adjectives. Let’s take the word “maduro” which can mean “ripe” referring to food and “mature” referring to people. We would say of a young person “es maduro” “he is mature” describing his character, whereas of fruit we would say “está maduro” “it’s ripe” that is, in a state ripe for eating. Sometimes the difference is less obvious, but quite important. What about if we feel a bit over-weight, maybe through eating too much over Christmas? We should say “Estoy gordo” or “estoy gorda” (I’m in a state of fatness at the moment) rather than
“soy gordo” or “soy gorda” (I am a fat person). At least that way we give the message to ourselves and others that there is really a “thin person underneath”! One example of my long list of mistakes while grasping these concepts was when I misused the word “pendiente”. This actually means “earring”, but when used as an adjective with “estar” also means “attentive, waiting”. It’s not a good idea to say to a group of young students “soy pendiente” (I’m an earring) but if you do, you won’t make the same mistake again. Moving away from descriptions now, there are a couple of examples of when the verb “estar” is used to form specific grammatical constructions. One is the “present action” or “present continuous” tense, which we have talked about before, in which we use the appropriate form of “estar” plus the present participle, as in “Estoy aprendiendo español”, “¿Estás escuchando?” “está jugando” etc. The verb “estar” is also often used with past participles when they change into adjectives. For example, the past participle of “romper” (to break) is “roto” (broken). We have seen before how to say this like: “The child has broken the cup” - “El niño ha roto el vaso”. However, we can also

say “The cup is broken”, which would be “El vaso está roto”. In this sort of transformation which describes the state of something we will always use the verb “estar”. This is why, incidentally, we say “está casado”, “está divorciado” “está muerto” as they are adjectives formed from the past participle of verbs. People often think it is strange to use “estar” to describe someone as married or dead, particularly if they have been taught that “estar” is used to describe a temporary situation. However, if we reject “temporary” and “permanent” as a useful rule and follow this grammatical explanation, it might just make a bit more sense! To round this up, and referring to the same subject area, we would say “soy soltero” (I am single) using the verb “ser”. This is because we are saying “I am a single person”. “Soltero” is a noun, and can also be an adjective, but it is not a past participle. I am skirting on the edge of an abyss here, but I hope you realize I am doing this all for your sakes, to help you to understand something that is actually a little complex. If it doesn’t make sense, please just go back to the explanation: “because it is” or even “because the teacher says so” or better still “because that’s what the Spanish say” and that will have to do!

Active Release Technique® at Advanced Chiropractic
Paul graduated with an Honours degree in physiotherapy from King’s College London in 1997. He has since gained a wide range of skills though post graduate courses and working in hospitals, with professional sport teams (English football, golf and athletics) and private businesses. For the last five years he has been specialising in the treatment form called A.R.T (Active Release Techniques) and is now part of the A.R.T Europe Team that is responsible for training other health professionals such as Chiropractors, Physiotherapists and Osteopaths in this technique. What is Active Release Techniques® (ART) A.R.T is a patented, state-of-the-art soft tissue system that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, joint capsules and nerves. Headaches, back pain, shoulder pain, sciatica, knee problems, carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow and plantar fasciitis are just a few of the many conditions that can be resolved quickly and permanently with A.R.T. These conditions all have one important thing in common: they are often a result of overuse.
How is Active Release Techniques® different from massage and most other soft tissue treatments? Although they may seem similar the procedures are actually very different as are the results. Many soft tissue techniques promote relaxation and increased circulation but as many conditions are a result of overuse, leading to adhesions and scar tissue, a more specific approach is required to solve the problem. Healthy connective tissue is smooth and slippery, allowing muscles, nerves, blood vessels or organs to move freely and function properly. When injured or overused it forms scar tissue that may stick to adjacent structures restricting the glide between them. This can restrict movement and alter function. It may also cause compression of blood vessels and nerves leading to abnormal sensations such as numbness, tingling or pain. An A.R.T Provider is a specialist in freeing up adhesions and making sure there is movement between structures. What is an A.R.T® treatment like? The A.R.T provider uses his or her hands to evaluate the texture, tightness and movement of muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments and nerves. Abnormal tissues are treated by combining precisely directed tension with very specific stretching. Anyone that has experienced A.R.T will explain that this is different to everything else that they have tried. Helena has been a client at Advanced Chiropractic in

Horoscopes Eliminate fears and worries, because however bad things have been in the past there is a light at the end of the tunnel, for sure. As Mercury squares Saturn there comes an inner peace that brings resolve and conclusion, as you happily wind down. The ignorance and lack of tolerance of others has spurred you on to make alternative future plans. Emotional security and stability are foremost this week as Venus enters into her domain of Taurus. This clears the way to bring in beauty into your life in whichever way you see fit. Artistic energies are stimulated, and it is the very best time to roll your sleeves back and participate in a domestic based project, to ring the changes and to colour your life. Rise to higher consciousness as your strong psychic centres are open to your own divination right now. You are working on a hunch, and you are about to be proved right on a suspicion you have picked up on. Mercury conjuncts with Neptune, and a message you are about to give will go on to bring comfortable relief to someone waiting for news. Crab like movements are somewhat necessary when you are unsure of just how the land lies at present. So too would a nasty nip to someone make you feel a hell of a lor better! Revenge is a dish best served cold, but it does have its attractions when you are up against it. The icy incipient Moon brings cold comfort that’s better then nothing! Aquarian energies serve to boost your negative outlook this week as Neptune dallies with Mercury in grand style. You are holding back on something very close to your heart and you have positioned your cards close to your chest; when really this is a time to care and share. Take control of a situation only if you accept the consequence of involvement. You have had to take sides, even if you didn’t want to; but then you know now you should never have got involved in the first place. Whilst somebody has told you a garbled version of events, the truth has yet to be told, and your senses tell you this week that there is something very wrong, and that immediate evasive action is all that’s left. Whilst Venus enters into your sister sign of Taurus there comes an opportunity to show others what you are all about. Recent sacrifices have shown your commitment and determination to see things safely through to the other side; and this has seen you having to leave your comfort zone somewhat. You are stubborn for a reason, but be true to you. The Uranus and Pluto midweek situation shines a light on what’s missing from your life right now. You need that someone commits to you, and it is high time you had the comfort of someone to watch over you. Throwing yourself into projects and taking control of your business life will have dividends and could show you a new direction right now. You need an outlet for your current levels of energy and enthusiasm. Mars makes constructive comments whilst Jupiter finds you a practical way of helping somebody who is in need right now, but is too proud to say so. Fear rules all negativities raised this month, and having to be strong brings you the blessing you need to counteract doubt. Mercury squares up to Saturn and begs you to look outside of the box this week. Order and discipline are your stalwarts, but it is time to take a barefoot walk in the park, and to look within at the inner you which is somewhat a stranger. Be warned that it is the unconventional way that bodes success and boosts your need to fulfil desires all ways! Planetary aspects of Uranus squaring Pluto brings you great change and calls for drastic action. Whilst you have long thought that there was something out there for you, this week brings a challenge like no other. You are about to enter into a new contract and this is just the start of a better future with new horizons beckoning you safely on. Mercury moves with stealth and power to influence your judgments this week. This is a time for finance to be settled and deals to be done with caution thrown to the wind and ambitions realised. Fulfilment is the reward for your level headed energies as mighty Uranus has current ides to take you to much deserved new heights, come what may!

HARDLY EVER does a week go by without someone asks me to predict the number of the Euromillion lottery. They haven’t realised that if I knew the numbers of the winning ticket why would I need to tell anyone else? Why haven’t I already won such a prize? I explain that I am rich in Spirit, and that I do not use my skills for financial gain in anyway whatsoever. Mind you money isn’t wrong. We are told it is the root of all evil, and many who have won large prizes see their relationship slide and their World appears to collapse around them. For many money does not bring happiness in any way, but then neither does the lack of money. It doesn’t help you at the gas station or the supermarket till either. The Spiritual law normally ensures that you have enough, never too little never too much. Money comes and goes and if you can find a way of making it stick around then you have mastered the greatest of the financial laws. It is the flow of money that brings reward in every case. If you have just a little something to give then you are connected to Universal energy and money can flow into your life and filter out of it under your instruction. All financial gain is ruled by strict laws after all. Money is not wrong, but the distribution of it leaves a lot to be desired. Poverty kills and Richness prospers since money makes money in the chain of

events and debt brings more debt into the equation if left unchecked. Many people tell me that it is wrong to ask for money, and that money and spirituality do not go hand in hand. I feel that since money pays for all aspects of life, if you need it you should have it. Now, more than ever it is a time when money is too tight to mention and it certainly isn’t wrong to ask for what you deserve. The chain effect of financial gain, if it is correctly applied, will greatly benefit others; and such a law of spiritual finance favours and actively promotes prosperity for all. If you have nothing then you have nothing to give. I am always aware that generosity is a wonderful thing. Being able to splash some cash around to help others would please me greatly. Money can unlock dreams and turn them into reality. It can open doors, save lives and prosper the poor. If life is what it is, the greatest opportunity we have is to reward others and to give whatever we can to those who need it more then we do. If you can sleep in a clean bed, can eat a good meal, have good health and you have friends by your side you really do have everything you need, as these are the treasures of life. It isn’t the top of the range trainers, Botox or a trip in Business Class that bring happiness on any level at all. Simplicity is, in the essence, a product of contentment, satisfaction and sufficiency. Ask for what you need whenever you contact Spirit. If you deserve it then it should be yours, and you can ask on someone else’s behalf too. Why not?

KENNY, WHO are the Ascended Masters and are they my Guides? Irena K. THE ASCENDED Masters are composed of many spiritually enlightened people who lived on Earth previously as ordinary people. Now in Spirit they have transformed into a body of those who want to influence and many are well known, others not so, but all of them have a mission to help us. For this reason they have kept full communication with a view to assisting whenever they can. Just saying their name sends an automatic blessing as their spiritual wisdom is so developed and so strong. They include: Sanat Kumara, Jesus, Lord Maitreya, Buddha and Mercury. Any one of them could guide you if you are able to connect with their energies.

Focus on Golf Powered by Campbell Lamont Golf, partnered by BayRadio
The sound of satisfying golf - PING! And your PAL on the green. By Tony Myles FOR DECADES the name Ping has been synonymous with innovation and the highest standards in golf equipment. It was Karsten Solheim a former GE engineer who, having been frustrated with the number of putts in his game, started to build a putter, to his own design, in his garage. Today his PING Pal is still the default option for many golfers and the reputation built around it has now led onto a range of market leading golf equipment. The brand is very popular with US Tour players and 21 of them have chosen PING
including Bubba Watson and Hunter Haman. In Spain it is the choice of Alejandro Canizares and Miguel Angel Jimenez CUSTOM BUILD It is somewhat surprising to learn that it was PING who actually led the way in custom built clubs which would be fitted to suit the build, age and swing pattern of the buyer. Equally surprising is the durability of the Ping Putter. This loyalty is exceptional in a market that never stands still. Month after month some manufacturer will release a new model with discernible improvements over previous iterations. For the novice golfer it is often a difficult choice - stay with the older set of clubs because they are familiar or invest in the latest technology in the hope of securing a significant improvement . Rory recently sent his six iron into the
middle of a lake having played a bad shot and then urged other golfers not to follow his example. It would appear that he has forgotten that most golfers will have to replace that club from own funds, whilst he will find one waiting for him by the time he gets back to the club house. FITTING DAY So for every amateur golfer it is a serious investment and therefore, anything that helps make that a sound investment has to be considered. Hence the popularity of the various fitting days that Campbell arranges at Ondara. With 30 minute dedicated sessions the amateur golfer can benefit from the professional treatment of the visiting crew. The next one is PING on 18th March. Hay Fever Season and Driving Problems IF YOU suffer from allergies, driving your car could add to a combination of factors that poses a potential risk on the roads. By Keith Nicol IN A new campaign from the DGT, it is revealed how a sneezing fit of just five seconds, means that a car travelling at 90 kilometres per hour covers a distance of 125 metres, the distance greater than a football field, when the driver´s attention is distracted as a result. Often the sneezing fit can last longer with the vehicle continuing to travel without the driver´s full attention. Sneezing is only one symptom of an allergic reaction, most commonly Hay Fever at this time of year. Severe itching of the eyes, irritation, congestion or a runny nose, light sensitivity and many more combinations of symptoms, all can make driving problematic for sufferers. Drugs to combat the physical symptoms can help ease the dreaded onset of Hay Fever, but some of these drugs sometimes causing drowsiness, or other problems, and can interact with prescribed medication. There are some things that can help sufferers. Within the car, keeping the vehicle clean, inside and out, can remove much of the residual pollen, as can the installation of filters in the air distribution system. Keeping windows closed, wearing sunglasses and avoiding key problematic times such as dawn and dusk can all ease the symptoms. All antihistamines sold in Spain should carry a pictogram on their packaging, depicting a car within a danger warning signal, which is designed to alert drivers of the possible effects on the ability to drive safely. However, it may not be present on imported medication. But, if you see this sign you need to be aware that your driving ability is likely to be affected. If you are taking any medication, make sure you read the instruction leaflet, or check with your doctor or pharmacist about interactions with other medication and driving. The website from the Sociedad Española de Aerobiología, www.polenes.com, can offer information within Spain, and allows you to select the different regions to see the current status of pollen and help you plan your driving activities. You can get more information about driving in Spain by following the special Trafico Guardia Civil group on Facebook, by searching for “N332”, or visiting their website, www.N332.es.
