Honour for forgotten British hero by Jack Troughton
FORGOTTEN BRITISH hero Captain Archibald Dickson was finally honoured last weekend for the dramatic rescue of 2,643 men, women and children from Alicante docks in the final days of the Spanish Civil War. The Cardiff-born seaman’s ship SS Stanbrook had run the blockade of the port in the final days of the war in March 1939 when some desperate 30,000 supporters of the doomed Republic were gathered hoping to flee the approaching national troops of General Franco. Capt Dickson and his 24 crew were planning to pick up a lucrative cargo of saffron, oranges and tobacco but left the goods on the dockside, packing the 230ft long Stanbrook with a humanitarian load instead. Bound for Algeria, the ship was 10 minutes into its journey under cover of darkness, when fascist aircraft bombed the city – two bombs falling into the water behind the ship, causing a moment of panic on board. And after 22 hours at sea, the ship reached Oran but the ordeal of the passengers was not over – the French colonial authorities would not allow them to disembark. Capt Dickson went ashore to negotiate and the women and children were given permission to land – the men were marooned on board for another month. Sadly, six months later, in November 1939, at the start of the Second World War, the 1,383-ton Stanbrook was torpedoed by a German submarine as she sailed from Antwerp to Tyneside. The vessel broke in two and all 22 men on board, including her 47-year-old skipper perished. BRAVERY Perhaps because the bravery of captain and crew took place in foreign waters and it was in the chaos of the final days of the Spanish conflict, Capt Dickson and the Stanbrook’s story has never been widely known in Britain. In Alicante and across Spain, their names are revered. However, on Sunday in the Welsh capital, a long-overdue memorial service to Capt Dickson started to redress the balance. Continued on page 3.

Pay and display back THE PARKING chaos in a Marina Alta town will soon be at an end after a company won the contract to monitor the ‘pay and display’ blue zone system. by Jack Troughton
Parking in Calpe’s busy town centre
A PREVIOUS contract to monitor the parking in Calpe ended at the beginning of the year, leaving a free for all through the streets. However, national company Pavapark, a branch of the previous operator’s network will now run the scheme after winning a tender. Calpe Town Hall took the opportunity to take on board the wishes of businesses in the town and the overwhelming response was controlled parking was needed in the busy central streets. Councillor Carole Saunders said: “Most businesses responded and outlined what they wanted from the scheme. As a result we will have some extra areas where it is ‘pay and display’
in the mornings only. “The blue zone scheme will be back in operation very soon. The national operator who ran it before have won the contract and prices will remain the same for motorists.” DIGITAL And people who have driven into Calpe but find they are unavoidably delayed can take advantage of new digital machines that will allow the use of a credit card to send information and extend their stay without attracting a fine. “We are really trying to modernise things in Calpe by using the latest technology,” added Mrs Saunders.
Continued from front page LABOUR INTERNATIONAL Costa Blanca Branch arranged for a delegation of 19 Spanish members of the Alicante Civic Commission for the Recovery of Historical Memory to visit Cardiff over the weekend. They presented a memorial plaque to the city at a ceremony hosted by the Lord Mayor of Cardiff, Councillor Margaret Jones. The stainless steel plaque depicts an image of SS Stanbrook in Alicante Port taken at the time and an inscription in English, Spanish and Welsh. Labour International branch chair Malcolm Hardy said also present at the unveiling at the city’s Mansion House were Arnold Dickson and Dorothy Richardson, Capt Dickson’s children, and David Lillystone and Pedro Olivares Martinez and the Lord Mayor of Cardiff unveil the plaque Sandra Robinson, greatgrandchildren of the ship’s engineer Henry Lillystone – together with six branch members and members of the Welsh section of the International Brigades Memorial Trust. Following the ceremony, the delegation and guests watched a rare showing of a short film about blockade runners during the Spanish Civil War. DEFEND Malcolm said: “Called ‘Britain Expects’ it was produced by the merchant seamen and officers’ trade unions as part of a lobbying process to get the government under the then Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain, to instruct the Royal Navy to defend cargo ships which were legitimately delivering supplies to the Republican government in Spain. “They were being attacked and in some cases sunk by Franco’s German and Italian allies. However, as this was during the period of appeasement, the film was embargoed and never shown in Britain.” And he said the Spanish visitors had also placed a wreath on the memorial in Cathays Park, Cardiff, to the Welsh members of the International Brigades who fought and died fighting for the republican cause in the Spanish Civil War. Capt Dickson’s son Arnold, now 80, and his sister Dorothy, visited Alicante in 2009 for a ceremony to remember the SS Stanbrook and said they were ‘lionised’. He said: “I felt very humbled. There must have been 3,000 people there. They wanted to thank my father but he wasn’t there. “We were the only way they could express their gratitude. I met two sisters who told me ‘we wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for your father.”
Bus passengers will be enjoying the benefits of the policy as new electronic information boards have been installed along routes. These inform people how long they need to wait for their service – and offer constant updates thanks to a gadget fitted on the bus itself. Security cameras are also being fitted at the entrances and exits of residential areas fitted with vehicle registration recognition technology. Mrs Saunders said these could monitor the movement of stolen or suspicious cars and would be watched by local police. “I think this will be very good. It is not Big Brother but increasing security by keeping a check on the movement of any suspicious vehicle.”

Time ticks away over vote
Do you have a story? Email rtnmail@roundtownnews.com
EXPAT VOTERS still have time to have a voice in next month’s General Election in Britain but the deadline to register to vote is fast approaching. by Jack Troughton REGISTRATION MUST be completed by midnight on Monday (20th April) and the UK’s Electoral Commission is urging all eligible British citizens living overseas to take the time to take a few minutes to complete the online process.
Registration must be completed by midnight on 20th April
The independent commission was set up by Parliament to protect the integrity of voting and maintain public confidence in UK democracy. It is working with a series of partners to promote overseas registration. And it is vital to register for a postal or proxy vote as quickly as possible. A proxy vote entails a trusted person being nominated on behalf of another. There could be as many as 5.5 million British people living abroad and expats previously registered to vote in a UK Parliamentary constituency in the last 15 years may have the right to cast a vote. A new online system was launched in June last year and tens of thousands of expats around the world have logged on to register – in comparison just over 7,000 overseas voter registration forms were downloaded in last year’s European elections to use the previous paper system. Alex Robertson, Director of Communications for the Electoral Commission said: “There is now just a matter of days left until the 20th April deadline, so we are encouraging UK expats to join the many others who have already registered to vote online. It takes just a few minutes and is far easier than the old, paper-based process. “There’s been a great response so far and we don’t want anyone to miss out on having their say on polling day.” To register, go to www.gov.uk/register-to-vote

Georgia Man shoots mother-in-law after bullet bounces off armadillo ARMADILLOS HAVE thick skins, but is it tough enough to deflect a pistol bullet and send it ricocheting towards one’s mother-in-law? Police in Georgia were called to the house of 54year-old Larry McElroy who told officers that his mother-in-law, Carol Johnson, suffered a gunshot wound after a 9mm round he fired at an armadillo bounced off the animal and struck her. Mrs Johnson suffered non life-threatening injuries; the armadillo was killed! Mr McElroy claimed his bullet killed the armadillo, then hit a fence, travelled through the back-door of Mrs Johnson’s mobile home and passed through the reclining chair she was lying in, striking her in the back. Police officers said Mr McElroy was 100 yards away from Mrs Johnson’s home when he fired the shot. Local official James Morgan said the authorities recommended either shooting or trapping armadillos that are creating a nuisance. “Shooting is an effective way of getting rid of them, but you have to be safe when you do that,” He also said “I really think if they’re going to shoot at varmints, maybe use a shotgun with a spread pattern with a lot less range.”

THIS WEEK the Costa Blanca Tourist Board has been meeting with major airlines to promote tourism in the Province. by Keith Nicol ‘ROUTES EUROPE’ is taking place in Scotland with a team from the Costa Blanca showcasing the potential of the impressive and somewhat underused, Alicante-Elche airport. During the week the group held several working meetings with the major companies where they addressed the possibility of new flight routes from Alicante terminal to the whole of Europe. The provincial delegation, headed by José Mancebo, met with representatives of EasyJet, one of the companies with greatest presence in the Alicante-Elche airport with the aim to bolster the number of flights for their next summer campaign with routes to Rome, London, Geneva, Basel, Belfast and Hamburg, among others. They have also considered the possibility of opening a new route connecting the Costa Blanca to the south of France. The Board also met with officials from Jet2. com, targeting potential customers in Leeds, UK. The purpose of this action is to boost sales in the low season and offer travellers to the Costa Blanca new, specific, attractions, such as sports or gastronomy.
Mancebo stressed the importance of participating in this event which is a priority in the calendar of fairs and exhibitions established by the Board. Deputy of Tourism Joaquín Albaladejo explained that in addition to promoting the traditional offers of sun and beach, “we have placed particular emphasis on other options as this is one of the reasons why travellers to our province visit the area for tourism-related conferences, conventions or business. According to official figures, 11% of passengers arriving at our airport do so for work, so we have noticed that this is a very interesting niche market we want to strengthen and increase.” The agency’s director held other meetings with officials of Lufthansa, Norwegian, Wizzair, Europe Airpost, Brussels Airlines, Germanwings, Monarch and S7, to present the Costa Blanca as a quality and versatile destination and focus on opening new potentially interesting routes for these companies and involving, in turn, a significant return of tourists to the province of Alicante.

COMMUNITY SUPERHEROES raised over 7,000 Euros for charity Make A Smile on Sunday as they took part in Bay Radio’s 3km Sponsored Challenge. by Jack Troughton A RAINBOW of colour filled the streets as more than 600 people – led by a cavalcade of Harley Davidson Motorcycles and classic cars – took everyone from Javea Port to the gardens of the Parador Hotel for a party. The charity will invest the cash in the EMAUS self-sufficiency project at Relleu, with some earmarked to buy food for children’s homes across the region run by EMAUS.

Television’s antiques expert Mark Stacey drove a convertible car to the hotel, acting as chauffeur to Benidorm’s famous The Duchess and to Carnival Queen and dedicated fund raiser, 13-year-old schoolgirl Lauren Denyer. In their wake came a host of fancy costumes – dancers, gangsters, Marvel Comic characters, including a dramatic low level flypast by the Red Barrows. Some chose to make the journey on a pogo stick, others on a unicycle, some played ‘keepie-uppie’ with a football. And Nigel Webb was ‘so supermarket.com’ walking the distance in bright red stilettos in homage to the current advertising campaign on television. He auctioned the high heels for 130€ and contributed a further 100€ by agreeing to have his legs waxed. Speaking on Tuesday night, Sue Nutbrown thanked everyone for taking part. “Everyone said they had a great time doing it – that’s what it is all about, you want people to enjoy doing it. “And the money is going up all the time. At the moment we have raised over 7,000€ with plenty more coming in.” Founder of Make A Smile, Tony Grande added his thanks to the fund raisers. “It is an absolutely unbelievable amount of money. I am going to divide it between the self-sufficiency

project and buying food for the homes. “The farm will benefit and I hope soon to double the money by growing more vegetables, selling more vegetables and eggs, and breeding more chickens. “Self-sufficiency is our target. It is all being reinvested and we hope will produce even more rewards.”

Flights to Spain finally getting back to normal FOLLOWING THE disruption of the French air-traffic control strike last week, most passengers that were left stranded have now been able to finish their journey almost a week later. by Jeanette Rice

Drivers caught out by new UK tax rules
THOUSANDS OF UK motorists have been fined and had their cars clamped by the DVLA after unwittingly falling foul of changes to tax rules. New regulations mean a vehicle’s tax is automatically cancelled when it is sold, even if it has an in-date tax disc. Clampings by the DVLA have rocketed since paper vehicle excise duty (VED) discs were phased out last October. Before the changes the DVLA clamped about 5,000 vehicles a month but this has risen to more than 8,000, with motorists finding their cars have been towed away without any warning. Most drivers know that tax discs are no longer required to be displayed in car windows, but many are unaware that VED is cancelled automatically if a car changes ownership, even if there is a valid disc. Now, in the UK, new owners have to tax the car again, and many are being caught out and being left with hefty fines.
There had been fears of a further two day strike this week on on the 16th-18th April but these were called off after the leading union representing controller, the SNCTA, said that certain assurances had been made by management and the government at a meeting held on April 13th. The winning ticket CHARITY ‘AMBULANCIA Para Javea’ celebrated its winning ticket at the Homes and Lifestyle Exhibition last weekend when it reached the 64,000 euros target to buy the town’s Red Cross a new vehicle. by Jack Troughton The charity ran a tombola at the Marriott Hotel and over the two days of the show sold 820€ worth of tickets - enough cash to but the specially adapted vehicle which will ferry the elderly, infirm and disabled to attend doctors and hospital appointments. Founded by Sandy Tsalikidis to support Red Cross Javea by raising awareness of the operation and cash to buy equipment, it was the end of a year-long drive. And luck was definitely smiling on the Red Cross – one of its members won a seven day cruise, allowing a single mum and her seven-year-old son an unexpected holiday. Sandy told RTN: “Our motto is ‘we will make a difference’ and it was the belief and that goal that Javea, Gata and Pedregeur could come together to give something back to the community. “The first task was to raise funds for a new adapted vehicle. The one they are using at the moment is old and not fit for purpose.” She said the Red Cross was funded by donations and sponsorship, so raising such a large sum of money “seemed like a huge task but we are very pleased to an-

“absolutely brilliant” the ambulance appeal had reached its target at a successful event where the numbers of visitors were “absolutely fantastic”. She said the hotel was an excellent venue for the show and the Marriott staff had backed all the needs of the organisers. “The content of the exhibitions was much better than before and the exhibitors have been very positive in their comments,” said Gina. “One visitor said it was even better than the Ideal Home exhibition.” And Gina was another celebrating winner at the show after getting engaged – she accepted the proposal of partner Fred Walton at the hotel.

Rotarians celebrate 1,000th meeting BRITISH CONSUL Sarah-Jane Morris was guest of honour at the lunch celebration last Friday marking the milestone of the 1,000th meeting of the Rotary International Fellowship Costa Blanca North. by Jack Troughton The party at the Los Leones Restaurant in Moraira’s Sol Park was attended by many of the 111 members, as well as guests from other Rotary Fellowships. A 600€ cheque was presented to Carole Saunders, President of Friends of the children of EMAUS, which will create a study room for youngsters living in the charity’s Altea home. Since the millennium, “more and more” emphasis has been placed on fund raising for good causes. Between 2007 and the end of the last financial year, more than 23,000€ has been handed to charities; including over 3,500€ last year. Rotary clubs were banned under Franco’s regime but after the dictator’s death began to openly flourish and expats in Albir launched a successful group. Soon there was enough interest in Javea and the Costa Blanca North Fellowship was born in the early eighties. Mrs Morris, who is based in Madrid but is charge of the British consulate in Alicante – one of the busiest consulates in the world – proposed the toast: “Good health to this very healthy organisation. To the next 1,000 meetings!” She explained before joining the Foreign Office she had worked in the NGO sector, working for Spanish charities in Spain and across the world. “I used to work for two years for the Spanish Red Cross for two years on a programme they had working with drug addicts, which is where I learnt really good Spanish,” she said. “I had to tone down my ‘street Spanish’ when I began working
at the British Embassy in Madrid.” CRISIS
community. “A vibrant British community, engaging with the local infrastructure and raising money for local charities – basically, people getting on with life without needing us to lean on.” However, she said the consulate and embassy did intervene over property issues and times when the system was being “unfriendly” over such matters as residency and health issues. Mrs Morris said her team was also backing charities – “as many as we can and in any way we can” – and, in general “unblocking things that get blocked!”
And the consul said part of her remit was working on crisis planning for the whole consular operation in Spain – remembering organising buses back to the UK for people from across the world arriving on journeys back to Britain interrupted by the Icelandic volcanic ash cloud that had grounded flights. She had also been involved in the Santiago train crash, a Britain was involved, keeping the Foreign Secretary informed. “Spain is a low risk country but high impact. If that train crash had been in another part of Spain, the impact on UK citizens could have been huge.” Mrs Morris said consulates supported British nationals abroad and filled in the gaps where local services could not. “When it all goes wrong and you don’t know where to turn, you go to the consulate.” She said for British residents in Spain, the consu(from left) Barry Lloyd, Consul Sarah-Jane Morris, David Pearson, late team aimed to build a Sheila Shipsides, Andrew Johnson, and Bob Hunt.

Antiques love affair
Do you have a story? Email rtnmail@roundtownnews.com
TELEVISION’S ANTIQUES expert Mark Stacey has become a familiar face on the Costa Blanca as he generously supports charity fund-raising but collectables remain his first love. by Jack Troughton His interest in history and beautiful objects started as a child in Wales, hunting around the cabinets and cupboards of his grandparents’ hotel but as years pass by his enthusiasm has never waned. “I still love it – there are still things out there to be found! It’s the Del Boy factor...this time next year, I could be a millionaire,” he told RTN. “I absolutely adore the Decorative Arts Movement of 1860 to 1940, it’s my favourite and like most people I love beautiful things. “I think people are interested in antiques because the market is always changing and there is always the chance you can turn up something valuable at a car boot sale.” Mark left Wales to work in the caring profession with mentally
and physically handicapped children and later the elderly but continued to explore antique fairs for treasures. He said he decided to move to Hants to start his own business working in an antiques centre. “I went from looking after old people to looking after old things...I didn’t know how it would work out but I was lucky enough to be a dealer. “I made mistakes and still do, but I got to the stage where I wanted to be bigger and better and the next thing was to be an auctioneer.” Mark went on to work for Bonhams in Hove as a valuer for three years and moved to Sotheby’s for another six years before working in other auction houses. “And after 14 or 15 years I decided to go back to buying and selling old things.”
His break into television came after answering a BBC advert in the Antiques Gazette and was invited for a screen test. “After two weeks I hadn’t heard anything and rang the BBC. They asked which Mark I was because incredibly, they interviewed two Mark Stacey’s on the same day. They asked me to be on ‘Flog It’ the same Sunday and it went from there...the ‘phone hasn’t stopped ringing since.” He said he did not have a favourite antique programme because they all had different formats but elements of the Antiques Road Trip – where two experts are thrown against each other while travelling the country in a classic car – was “competitive and fun and the cars are really good.”
Mark Stacey
The celebrity version was also enjoyable, enabling him to meet a string of “wonderful people”. “Christopher Biggins was a real hoot; it was more like ‘The Carry On Road Trip”. He said all profits from the road trip went to charity and the experts really did have to haggle. “There are no deals done beforehand but the cameras are there...you hope people warm to you. “Then you get to the auction where you are sometimes gutted at the price things go for, but it is enter-
tainment and I know that no dealer has yet been hurt in the making of the programme.” He first came to Spain and visited Javea 18 months ago, invited to make a guest appearance as an antiques valuer and has continued to return to back charity projects organised by Sue Nutbrown, who with husband Chris have become firm friends. “I have fallen in love with Javea and love coming to Spain...I am just very lucky the BBC has not yet found out I don’t really know anything!”

Chef finds vital ingredients CELEBRITY CHEF Antony Worrall Thompson made a whistle-stop visit to the Costa Blanca last weekend but has quickly fallen for its beauty and food. by Jack Troughton THE THOMPSON family makes an annual trip to Spain for a break in Mihas but after discovering the vital ingredients that make up the coastline’s tractions. Acting as a judge in the Grant A Wish fun Bake Away at the Homes and Lifestyle exhibiton at the Denia Marriott, he told RTN: “This is my first time on the Costa Blanca. I have not had the chance to have a proper look around but I definitely intend to. “We travel once a year to Mihas but I will now definitely make a stop here on the way down – the natural beauty of this area is fantastic.” He said he had found food in the Mihas area “pretty average” but added: “The further north you go it appears the food just gets better and better. I have enjoyed some wonderful meals already.” WELCOME He said everyone at Homes and Lifestyle had been “genuinely very welcoming” and supportive and he had enjoyed taking part with antiques expert Mark Stacey in the Costa Blanca Cook Off - a fun competition with local chefs based on television hit Ready Steady Cook. There were three classes in the Grant A Wish competition – novelty, cupcakes – and Antony judging the ‘sponges’ along with the Marriott Hotel’s head chef. “Obviously some cakes are better than others. I don’t know who any of the bakers are – although I’m told one is from as far away as La Manga, and they stood out,” said Antony. “It is all about a sponge being light and fluffy, about texture and taste. Taste is a very personal thing and the other judge might not agree with me. “I found one or two to be a bit bland but others were very tasty and just what i was looking for in a cake.” GAW’s Ramon Howard, Antony, RTN n, and Managing Director Danny Wilkinso Michaels CWM operations director Graham

Don’t be put off
I FELT I should report to other holiday makers what happened to me in Benidorm. My wife and I had a fantastic time in Benidorm until the last day when I was pick pocketed. I had been really careful all week and had no problems, then on the last day, me and the wife decided to go for lunch in a cafe bar across the street from our hotel. The bar was empty with just one other guy in there. After the meal I paid the lady at the till and put my wallet back in my trouser pocket. The lady kept me talking. When I think back I believe I was scammed. She seemed to be looking over my shoulder and the only other guy in there squeezed past me. When we left I noticed pretty much straight away that my wallet was missing and went straight back to confront the man. The lady behind the till and the manager said they had seen me give my wallet to my wife who had put it in her bag. My wife never even took a bag! As my pocket was zipped there was no way it could have fallen out. I said I would be back with the police. I asked the manager if he knew the man and he said he was a total stranger even though they had all been pretty friendly with him. I am sure they were all working together but just cannot prove it. Please be careful with your belongings, but don’t be put off.
Residencia letter THE REPLY from Mrs Ellen Rose stated very clearly that this is not the document we used to carry with our photo on called the “Residencia”. The Green Registration Card that is now issued replacing the Green Registration Paper is not a form of identification and does not need to be carried at all. Your SIP card displays your NIE No. on the front and you should normally be carrying this anyway. Our driving license or passport are at the moment our only form of ID. The Registration Card is better off kept safely at home unless you want to buy a car for instance or register for a SIP card. Kind Regards, Candida Wright

Beware holiday heart syndrome HOLIDAYMAKERS ENJOYING their hard-earned break in the sun risk triggering a heart complaint if they over indulge in their drinking. by Jack Troughton Cardiologist Jeroen Braat warned that Heart Rhythm Disturbances could be “alcohol induced” as people enjoyed the holiday spirit and took advantage of cheap booze. Head of department at Hospital Clinica Benidorm, he labelled the condition “a holiday syndrome” that affected all nationalities and was commonly seen on the Costa Blanca. “When people go on holiday, they drink too much – we see HRD very often here at the hospital,” added Dr Braat. He explained that HRD was often diagnosed in heart patients – people who had suffered a heart attack or older people with heart valve conditions. “However the same HRD can be induced by taking excessive alcohol – if you overdo it, there is a chance you can develop this condition,” said the doctor. “It can be dangerous and very annoying. SYMPTOMS “The symptoms are a shortness of breath, chest pains, panic and perhaps even collapse.” While heart attacks are caused by a blocked artery, HRD was an electronic disturbance. “It is like the main battery has been set aside and the spare batteries kick in but make excessive electricity – the heart goes very fast and irregular.” Dr Braat concluded: “It is a typical Benidorm sign because a lot of people spend their holidays here and everyone tends to drink too much – and a lot of people have bad luck and their heart responds poorly because of HRD.”
Heart specialist Dr Jeroen Braat
And he said people could also cut the risk of suffering a heart attack by taking a number of positive steps – the most important was to stop smoking as even one a day damaged the vital organ, diabetes need to be controlled if possible, and obese people needed to lose weight. “Unfortunately old age is a risk factor. Ever year you are older, there is a higher chance of heart failure,” said Dr Braat. “You need to make life fun and live well, otherwise you do everything right and your life is three times as long...you get bored. MEASURES “Drink socially, no more than two units every 24 hours and take proper measures – wine in a wine glass, beer in a beer glass and whisky in a whisky glass.” And he said people could also build up the health of their heart by taking exercise. “Walk, no fast, but just normal
walking...and I mean proper walking in the open air, not just going to the shop.” The doctor said the Costa Blanca was one of the healthiest places in the world to live because of its excellent air quality and the Mediterranean diet. “Vegetables are rich in nutrients and all cooked in olive oil – not butter because that’s wrong. Olive oil has a calorific value but does not damage the arteries, it doesn’t block the arteries. Dr Braat said a “powerful protection” was obtained by eating fresh fish regularly. “Amino acids give protection against a heart attack and HRD...just go to a restaurant and enjoy any type of fish – eat it twice a week, that’s sufficient, you don’t need more – and enjoy it with a nice glass of wine. “In summary, to have an excellent quality of life on the Costa Blanca is easy. Combine it with a healthy lifestyle and the free and healthy sea breeze.”

Registering your vehicle in Spain Spanish license plates and registration document. Registering a non-Spanish vehicle in Spain is a complex and potentially costly procedure. However, you may be exempt from Spanish registration tax by getting Spanish number plates within one month of entering the country. But to do this, you need to become a resident. Linea Directa has been insuring expat drivers in Spain for over a decade and understands all the steps involved. Below we outline this process. STEP 1: OBTAINING A CERTIFICATE OF CONFORMITY This is a statement by the car’s manufacturer that it conforms to EU regulations. You will need the car’s chassis number to complete this straightforward process online at www.eurococ.eu/en/certificate_of_conformity. The charges for this service will vary according
to type of vehicle, make and country of 1st registration. STEP 2: CURRENT LOG BOOK The vehicle’s original log book showing your name as the owner, the vehicles age and a valid UK address. You will also need the bill of sale for the car. STEP 3: RESIDENCY IN SPAIN The Spanish residency certificate (Certificado de Empadronamiento) is your official proof of residency in Spain. Your local town hall can provide you with this document. You will need to take your passport and proof of Spanish address (rental contract, contract to purchase or property deeds). STEP 4: OBTAINING A SPANISH MOT CERTIFICATE All vehicles over 4 years old must
Call now on: 902 123 148 be roadworthy and clearly display a valid ITV sticker. The ITV (Vehicle Technical Inspection) must be tested at an authorised centre, just as for an MOT test. You can find out the location of your nearest ITV centre on DGT website (equivalent to the DVLA). You can also call your local centre to make a booking. If the centre is busy, especially pre-summer, this can save a lot of time. The cost can
vary but generally is around 40€ for petrol-engine cars and 56€ for diesel-engine cars. Step 5: OBTAINING A SPANISH EQUIVALENT OF A TAX DISC The Spanish Tax Agency can provide your vehicle with a valid “tax disc” for Spain, which must be carried in the car when in use. You will need to complete the relevant form online and pay the
amount according to your car’s tax band. You can carry out all these procedures yourself or you can seek the assistance of an accountant to do this for you. Church back EMAUS by Jack Troughton
THE CHURCH of England congregation of La Fustera Church had donated 230€ to help the children living in the EMAUS home in Calpe. The money was raised by at a quiz organised by Sue McNae, a member of the congregation of the church, located between Calpe and Moraira. Father Marcus Ronchetti, Senior Chaplain of the Costa Blanca Anglican Chaplaincy, is pictured presenting a cheque to Carole Saunders, President of charity Friends of the Children of EMAUS last Friday. Church of England Parishes in Spain are entirely self-funding and fundraising is essential to maintain its ministry in Spain, including funerals and pastoral care to the sick and bereaved. The seven local churches in communities between Valencia and Alicante also raise money in support of a variety of causes, including Caritas, EMAUS, World Vision and the Gandia Hospice. For more information about the chaplaincy and the activities of the churches, visit the website www.costablancaanglicanchaplaincy.org

The farm project involves a special EMAUS home for disabled people and is designed to grow produce and raise chickens to allow the sale of vegetables and eggs, while putting fresh food on the tables of the children’s homes. Tony, who has been an EMAUS volunteer for over seven years, was guest speaker at U3A’s April meeting, and outlined how a band of ‘land girls’ were giving up their time to help at Relleu.

Bring me sunshine... GENEROUS EU grants are currently available for people investing in solar power and other forms of renewable energy in Spain. by Jack Troughton Solar thermal installation expert Peter Spahn is a member of Solarverein Trier, a German-based charitable association, and helps people apply for subsidies. He said both residents and non-residents could apply for the money – representing up to 45% of the cost of installing units – and it was part of a seven year programme launched last year by Europe to increase Spain’s use of renewables. “Spain is still using a large amount of fossil fuel energy and renewable are only around 6.5%, although their use has increased in the last few years by using wind farms and other sources of renewable,” he said. “Spain needs a bit more time. However, it is very interesting because 1,700 kilowatts of energy per square metre are available, that’s equivalent to 170 litres of diesel. “The heating potential of 1 litre of diesel is 10kw hours. So the sun provides an enormous amount of energy and it is up to us to take it or leave it.” He said there were different forms of solar power collectors and they harnessed the “huge potential” of the sun to heat hot water or provide central heating. SAVE The perfect time to install solar thermal units was when a new house was built and IVA taxed on the purchase of a solar plant was 10% - potentially saving a lot of money. “People are fed up with paying more and more for electricity, gas and oil,” he said, adding that since 2006 building regulations on new homes made it compulsory to include a solar domestic hot water system.
Peter Spahn
And he underlined that to qualify for an EU subsidy a home must be fully legal and applications should be submitted in June and July, with installation completed by the autumn. Paperwork, including proof of payment, should be handed in by the year end. “It is true that Valencia, which handles the applications, has no money but IVACE deals with this, taking the money
from Europe and sharing it between the projects,” said Peter. “The financial support is generally between 30% and 45%, even 50% in the last years – a few clients have got half their money back.” More information is available from www.ivace.es and www.enreal.eu, while Peter can be contacted via pspahn@web.de

Record breakers
RECORDS TUMBLED as nearly 150 walkers in 29 teams valiantly competed against the clock in the fifth annual Mirador Challenge across Javea last Sunday. by Jack Troughton Created and organised by javeamigos.com, the 29.5km coastal route links 15 official viewpoints – or Miradores in Spanish – and the challenge is to cover the distance in the fastest time – without running. And the challenge, which has evolved into one of the town’s premier sporting events, now attracts a truly international entry with British, Spanish, Dutch, Polish, and South American walkers taking part from across the region. Kate O’Malley and her daughter Scarlett were handed a special award after flying in from the UK to join team the Nordic Walkers – Scarlett also setting a record, aged 16 years, two months and three days, she is the youngest person ever to take part in the challenge and led the way over the last kilometres. The event is split into two categories; Sport where teams strictly walk against the clock, and Leisure, where teams are able to take a moment to admire the views but also have to meet a number of mathematical challenges at certain viewpoints. Mike Smith of javeamigos.com said: “It was probably down to the cooler weather that, despite the route being extended by some 2.5km for this year’s editions, the average time to complete the course was recorded as five hours 33 minutes – only 10 minutes slower than 2014 when the course was shorter, and almost an hour quicker than the third edition in 2013. “It has been credit to some very serious pre-race training by the vast majority of the participants over the previous few weeks that these times were recorded; it was a truly stunning battle of fitness and stamina.” VOLUNTEERS And he paid tribute to the “happy band” of volunteers
Journey’s end
spread across the route acting as checkpoint supervisors, route marshals and support units. In the sport section Nordic Walkers and Team Mamil – who started in 16th and 22nd positions as teams – overtook the field. Team Nordic crossed the line as a team first followed by rivals Team Mamil. They were greeted by warm applause, cold beer and the chance of a soothing foot massage from members of the Costa Blanca Reflexology Group – and the remaining 27 teams crossing the line over the following two hours and 10 minutes enjoyed the same reception and everyone was given a commemorative medal. The fastest team proved to be Team Mamil in an adjusted
time of four hours 24 minutes, just two minutes ahead of their rivals. In the Leisure group, team los Sherpas de Xabia 2 won for the third year in a row, recording a time of four hours and 36 minutes. Trophies were handed out at a special evening at Bar Quo Vadis when teams, families and friends packed the venue to first learn of the results, the prizes sponsored by the bar, Hamiltons of Moraira and Knight’s Construction. Mike said team were already discussing next year’s challenge, provisionally taking place on Sunday 3rd April. “There have been some new records set this year; it will take a very determined team to break them...are you ready to face the challenge?”

Football teams from Sweden and Norway It was a bittersweet afternoon for the presentation of Sunshine Radio International Petanca League trophies. enjoy Torrevieja
AFTER THE success of Easter’s Torrevieja Cup, Scandinavian Football teams arrived to train over Easter with the Swedish Football Club OSK having their first visit to Torrevieja Sports City. They were joined by SNØGG football club, from the city of Notodden, located southeast of Oslo. The Norwegian club brought their women’s team, who play in Norway’s Second Division. Both teams had several daily workouts to perfect technique, tactics and fitness. This was the first time that two teams have spent a week in Torrevieja using its facilities for various daily workouts with the OSK Football Club playing several friendly matches against teams form the Torrevieja Municipal Football school. The Swedish Club announced that they will soon return to Torrevieja to enjoy a campus club with their other teams.
by Susan Ward The Sunshine league was the creation of Bob Hornsey who very sadly and suddenly died on 11th March 2015. Bob was 65 years old and since his move to Spain had been associated - indeed the instigator - of many local clubs including San Miguel Tigers, Dominoes, Florentilles, Laguna Vista, Los Balcones and Pumas. Bob had also been President and Secretary of Las Salinas Petanca League. But undoubtedly his biggest achievement was the setting up of the Sunshine Radio International Petanca League. This does not happen overnight and took him over a year to put together. The league had the backing of Sunshine Radio and in particular their presenter Simon Morton. Teams were eager to join because of Bob who promised a fun and friendly league. He was enthusiastic, knowledgeable and well liked, so the league took off. April 2nd was the 1st presentation party of the league and Bob would have thoroughly enjoyed it as it had an atmosphere that he so used to revel in. Simon Morton gave a heartfelt speech about Bob before presenting the trophies and medals, with the help of Jacqueline Lopez, to the winners. Winners Division A Division B

Cup Mixtas Plate Laguna Vista Bowl Mix ‘n’ Match and the match between winners of A and B was Mixtas. Congratulations to all winners and indeed those teams who played and won nothing -- better luck next year! After the ceremony and all photographs were taken, a magnificent hog roast with all the trimmings was laid on.Our thanks go to Dominoes Bar and their staff for use of the their venue and hard work. So, the Winter League is now truly
done and dusted and having had a few weeks respite our thoughts turn to the Summer Sunshine League due to start on 10th April. This will continue until mid July by which time the sun will win over being able to play comfortably. The league committee are already planning for next Winter and would be happy to increase the number of clubs participating - so - if your club would like to apply please get in touch :sunshine.radio.petanca@gmail.com The League can only go from strength to strength in the memory of Bob Hornsey. Thank you for that Bob.

home and garden

Don’t just put flowers in vases, eat them too! I HAVE had a garden since the age of five, that means that for seventy three years I should have been eating mostly home grown ecological food for every meal every day of the year. But like many poor school food, poor cooking by a busy mother, snacks on the run during a busy business live diverted me at times from maximising eating the free health foods from the garden. And helping my father in his bakery, when around ten years old, crystallise violet flowers for decorating cakes was in hindsight not the healthiest produce to add to already heavily laden iced cakes. When I retired in 1994 following two cancer operations I followed the surgeons advice of eating a healthy Mediterranean diet rather than experiencing a debilitating programme of radio and chemotherapy. Fortunately our holiday home was in a then self sufficient valley that ate and exported fresh produce daily and the older folks still gathered bunches and wicker baskets of wild herbs and flowers for culinary and medicinal purposes. For decades we had eaten Globe artichokes the flower bud of the plant and when harvesting nasturtium leaves to add zest to salads we added a few flowers for decoration and their subtle taste. Likewise rose pettles were added to salads and breakfast infusions and elderflowers were used to make a home made wine in the kitchen. Then we started to make Kombucha and added elder rosemary and thyme flowers to add interesting and beneficial tastes. When we walked the local mountains we chewed the flowering tips of rosemary stems for the energy giving oil and romanesque and cauliflowers were often eaten as vegetables. Then within five years of living full time in Spain the
village and valley lost its self sufficiency as families moved off the land to work in the construction industry in the mad Spanish bank destroying boom. So we started to grow all we could ourselves to the state of being self sufficient in vegetables, herbs, fruit, meat and beneficial edible flowers. In 2002 we visited Cuba for a month. Not to visit tourist resorts but to wander around the countryside to study the green revolution of communal allotments outside every town, village, school and factory. One day we visited the research department of the Havana Botanic Garden and were invited to lunch by the Director. Asked what we would like to eat we said give a garden speciality. This turned out to be a brightly coloured hibiscus salad and we learned that the flowers were a relaxant, cooled one down and helped to control ones blood pressure. Returning home we researched what other beneficial flowers we already had in our garden and what others we should perhaps start to grow. The list actively included in our diet soon grew. The following dozen are extracted from the list of forty flowers and the reasons why in ‘Living well from our garden Mediterranean style’. They , and the other flowers already mentioned can all be grown in and around a vegetable garden and within the flower garden. Chive flowers while still fresh to add interest to salads and their anti oxidant properties. Begonia flowers can help keep livers healthy by aiding toxin elimination. Brocolli flowers for their vitamin and folic acid content. Borage flowers to add to cider or cold herb infusions.
Courgettes flowers for stuffing to steam or bake. Day lilies, going in our salad tonight, are good for ones hair and nails. Marigold petals are an interesting addition to salads and as an infusion they are said to be good for one’s skin. Orange and lemon flowers to add an interesting taste and perfume Passion flower to salads and infusions can be infusiuons. relaxing Passion flower infusions can be relaxing. Rocket flowers as well as leaves add a spiciness to salads. Sunflower seeds can be dried and chewed as a snack. Viola flowers can relieve as an infusion hay fever and allergies. Violets were as infusions a traditional relief for varicose veins. Hope that these thoughts add to a new interest in what you grow. But do not spray flowers that you intend to eat with chemical insecticides.

Interest rates unlikely to rise
by
Christina Brady
Regional Manager of Blacktower Costa Blanca
ACCORDING TO top economists interest rates in the UK, Europe are unlikely to rise until 2017 and more controversially rates in the US are now not expected to rise until 2016. THE UK is inflation has held steady at a record-low 0% , Inflation has not been this weak since at least 1989, when comparable data began. The ONS said that a rough estimate based on other figures suggested inflation was the weakest since isolated price falls in 1959 and 1960. This leaves inflation well below the Bank of England´s 2% target and the headline measure calculated to one decimal point is expected to dip below zero. This means that the Bank of England is under no pressure to raise interest rates. But for now few economists think Britain is at risk of the Japanese-style entrenched price falls i.e. deflation that have threatened the euro zone. The eurozone’s woes are likely to be a key drag on the UK economy, the European Central Bank has started quantitative easing and anxiety about a Grexit continues. It’s not all bad news though, with the Euro being so weak it means expats living off a Sterling income have benefited and the Euro
may well get even weaker against Sterling and we could even see an exchange rate of 1.40 or even 1.45 in the next few months. But back to savers, what you may be asking yourself can you do to make a little extra from your money, well firstly if you are over 65 years old I would recommend you look at investing in the pensioner bonds being offered by the UK government until May 15th 2015. The 1 year bond pays 2.24% after basic rate tax, this is automatically deducted when the interest is paid (2.8 % before) and the 3 year bond pays 3.2 % after tax (4% before). All interest is paid at maturity and the maximum investment is £10,000 per person over 65 years old in each bond. But what if you are under 65 or are over 65 but need more than £20,000 of your money to work for you. Well it’s no good looking to the banks, the launch of high-paying Pensioner Bonds has led to banks cutting more than 100 rates in 21 days, according to Money Mail . Big names including Lloyds Bank, Royal Bank of Scotland, Halifax, the Post Office and
Skipton Building Society are among those to hack back interest on High Street accounts, cash Isas and even deals for children. In some cases, interest rates have been slashed in half. Getting back money lost investing in Bankia’s shares. Part II. AS MENTIONED in previous articles, our law firm is helping many consumers who lost their savings in the purchase of Bankia’s shares, and we are continuously receiving enqueries regarding this subject. ALMOST EVERY day new judgments are granted by the Spanish courts in favor of consumers, to name just a few: the courts of Mataro, Catalonia, Community of Valencia, City of Valencia, the Valencian Provincial Court, the Provincial Courts of Avila and Burgos, courts of the cities of Oviedo, Logroño, Madrid, Alcala de Henares, etc. We think that it is clear that consumers bought shares of Bankia based on misinformation provided to them by the bank, from its IPO in 2011, until May 2012, when the real economic and financial situation of the bank was known. So, Bankia gave the image of being a large, healthy and solvent bank, when in fact, as came to light later, the real situation was very different from that advertised and reflected in their prospectus, publicity, etc. To assist consumers in this situation, our firm offers to waive our own fees for clients in a “no win no fees” deal, meaning that only if the case is won would we charge our legal fees as per the Law Society, and if not, the only expense our office would need to charge would be a small provision to cover necessary unavoidable administrative expenses. However, clients should be aware, that if the court case and claim is lost, although you would not pay our fees, the court may ask you to pay the legal fees of Bankia’s lawyer and procurator, as in Spain, usually, whoever loses the court case must pay the costs of the winning party. To illustrate, consumers should note that according to the criteria of law society guidance fees book of the province of Alicante: In a claim for the amount of €1,200, the lawyer’s fees would be € 414 + VAT.
If the claims for 4000 €, the lawyer’s fees would be € 1,010 + VAT. For claims of € 18,000, the lawyer’s fees would be € 3,350 + VAT. If amounting € 60,000, the lawyer’s fees would be € 7,430 + VAT. Also, our readers should know that claims for an

amount of € 6,000 or less would be decided in an oral court case process, which is a faster court process. By contrast, those exceeding € 6,000 will be decided in an ordinary court process, which usually takes longer, it has the advantage that the bank must answer the claim in writing and before the hearing. – with Gandia Tours
by Jo Pugh - RTN Facebook competition winner GANDIA TOURS S.L has got it right! A weekend Theatre break in Madrid, with perfect service, is a treat to be savoured. We left Calpe, where we were warmly greeted by our hostess, Ramona, and were soon heading towards Madrid where we arrived in plenty of time to check in and explore all the attractions within easy walking distance. The Hotel Puerto de Toledo had clean, pleasant and comfortable rooms with free Wifi throughout. Within five minutes of arrival, we had our key, as Gandia Tours had prechecked everybody in. On Friday evening, we set off for the musical production of ‘Priscilla – Queen of the Desert’. We were impressed after realising that we didn’t have the cheapest seats in the theatre,
but the best! It was fantastic, with the audience singing and dancing to this wonderful production. Our driver was patiently waiting as we left with feather boas and full of song! The customer service from Gandia Tours was exceptional. Ramona, our guide, was at the hotel entrance making sure we had all returned safely at 1am in the morning! Next morning, we had a huge buffet breakfast, with food to suit all tastes, from a full English to cheeses, meats and cereals. Ramona greeted everybody, and answered any questions about our stay, with wonderful knowledge of what to do and see. We had a free day, so decided to catch the Madrid City Tour Bus. For 10€ for pensioners, and 21€ for under sixtyfives, we could hop on and off two different tour routes on an open top bus. The ticket lasted twenty four hours, more than
enough time to see every sight possible (twice, in our case!). The major attractions include the Royal Palace, Plaza Mayor, Retiro Park and Gran Via. We had a free evening, so sampled some of the amazing tapas on offer, every tapas bar buzzing with loud chatter and animated conversations . Sunday morning, Ramona suggested we visit the Rastro, just 200 metres from the Hotel. Madrid’s Rastro is absolutely enormous making; this a very pleasant and relaxing Sunday morning. Back at the hotel we had a coffee on the terrace while we waited for our departure. We left Madrid with fantastic memories of a wonderful weekend. Gandia Tours are to be applauded for their customer service, staff, organisation and professionalism. It was a fantastic short break, and we will be booking another!

Sri Lanka SITUATED SOUTH of India, this island offers almost 1600km of beautiful palm lined beaches, which, if you know where to look, you can enjoy virtually all year round.
SRI LANKA has two monsoon seasons, affecting totally different areas of the island. So if your holiday plan is for June – November, the East Coast offers up the best areas, whilst holidays from November to March are best enjoyed in the lovely South Western Coast. Both areas offer ample opportunities for varied activities such as windsurfing, kayaking, yachting, water skiing, scuba diving. Let´s not forget that you can also just relax on your holiday – something that many of us seem to forget about in our rush to take in all the sights. And what a lot there are in Sri Lanka – home to no less than 8 World Heritage Sites, with a history which spans over 3000 years. Ancient abandoned villages and cities, with excellently preserved examples of palaces, temples, monasteries and hospitals, carved from stone. The oldest and one of the most sacred cities for World Buddhists, the Kingdom of Anuradhapura, was the capital of Sri Lanka from the Fourth Century BC to the turn of the 11 Century. Tens of thousands of people lived in this city which homed monasteries, glitteringjewel topped temples, shops, pleasure gardens, parks and bathing pools. The restored remains of this city are a must see! Sri Lanka, whilst offering beaches and history, is also well known for it´s amazing wildlife. With 90+ species of animals including Sri Lanka
Asian elephants, leopards, sloth bears buffaloes, as well as offering home to some species on the brink of extinction due to habitat loss. In the surrounding waters, you can see blue whales, sperm whales and dolphins and in the skies, over 400 species of birds, many of which have developed distinctively from their Indian cousins. Sri Lanka has a reputation for health and well being, attracting a large number of visitors each year, with spa and health retreats offering meditation for the soul and the native healing system, Ayurdeva. Built on the basis of diet and herbs, this was the country´s only treatment method until the introduction of Western Medicine in the relatively recent 19th Century. And from one kind of therapy to another…. Retail therapy! Obviously well known for it´s tea, there are many other souvenirs to purchase, jewellery, wood carvings, pottery, silks, materials, spices. Just make sure you have a good luggage allowance for the return journey! With good flight connections from Alicante, and accommodation from hostel to high class hotels, this is one destination that should top your bucket list, without breaking your bank. Worldwide Horizons have packages deals and tailor-made itineraries for anyone wishing to travel to Sri Lanka. Contact them on travel@whtravel.es or call 966 761 492 for full information including flight connections and visa requirements.

showbiz goss UNIVERSAL STUDIOS have only gone and opened Krusty Burger and Moe’s Tavern made famous by The Simpsons. There has been a thriving Downtown Springfield area for some time now, and now with Moe’s Tavern and Krusty Burger added, when you are in of need some light refreshment you can sip on Duff beer or order a Side Show Bob Foot Long hot dog. I´ll bet it costs a lot of DOH!! TRY AND get yourself to Regents Park this summer, and the Happy Hippo Café. The eatery will be open from 4th – 11th June and for a mere £20 you can tuck in to all you can eat and drink. Why you ask? Well, there are only 3000 Baby Hippos left on the planet and 18 month old George and 22 month old Bungle are there to remind how cute they are. Follow on Twitter @CafeHippo.

And now for something completely bitchy!
IT’S MANY a haircut since I´ve done any serious Cowell bashing, but I found the tale of David Walliams winning an NTA award last week totally irresistible. Chances are you already know a bit about this story, but when I read Simon´s outrageous comments and outlandish jealousy fuelled remarks, I decided this sorry tale had to be part of this week’s column. Simon Cowell has always carefully selected his fellow judges so that when push comes to shove in the ego area he can always ´be the man,´ stooping to the ugliest of statements an example of how low he is prepared to go ... Preamble complete, now to this latest debacle! David Walliams decided to ask his Twitter followers to vote for him to win some innocuous Best TV Judge award, and that they did, and he said about Cowell not winning it “He couldn’t beat me, and he wasn’t happy! He’s got ten million Twitter followers but he still couldn’t get them to vote for him, he´s genuinely upset about it!” Meanwhile at the Cowell camp Simon said “He just seems to be getting bigger and bigger and his ego is getting bigger, he is literally uncontrollable.” He said this as Walliams pulled a sneaky and asked ´his friend´ Simon to accept the award on his behalf to which Simon said “accepting the award on David’s behalf was actually the ´most awful moment´ of my career, I literally got a knot in my stomach,” aah bless! David closed out this school playground catfight when he said “The irony for me is that being a judge is just one of the things I do, I act, do comedy, write books … with Simon, it’s actually all he does.” Ironic it certainly is David! SPITTING IMAGE began in 1984 and ran for 18 series and won copious amounts of awards for its biting satirical humour and mocking style of comedy. A new show called ´Newzoids´ started on Wednesday on ITV and although it follows similar lines to Spitting Image is quite different. Writer on both shows Giles Pilbrow said “our main mission is to amuse people.” That’s Wednesday nights at 10pm sorted.
“ Quote of the week
ABC on planning to revive The Muppet Show “Kermit, Miss Piggy, Gonzo, Animal and Fozzie Bear will all be back!” … What? No Beaker!!!

KATIE HOPKINS has upset many with her potty mouth over the last month or so, and could well get a proper job to do it a bit more. Life as a radio presenter beckons on LBC in London, with them saying “She´ll be tested with dummy callers, and if she proves popular with listeners, she´ll be given a regular slot.” Katie is yet to comment on her alleged new role, so hang on to your hollyhocks!

Life Coach
WITH A background in family and matrimonial mediation, Life Coach Sara Bell helps Readers with their daily worries. If you are having difficulties with relationships, family, work or any other aspect of your life, then help is at hand.
Our choice After much consideration, my wife and I decided not to have children. We decided that we were simply happy enough to be just the two of us. We have noticed that my sister, who has children, has been given preferential treatment by my parents, whilst we have been all but ostracized. We also received a lot of pressure from my parents, over the years, to have children. And I am certain my parents unfairly blame my wife for our decision. These days, a lot of couples are choosing not to have children. It is simply a lifestyle choice, that is no one else’s business, and a matter solely for those making the decision. If you feel you need to explain to your parents, that this has been a joint decision, then do so. But if they are still treating you differently to your sister, simply because she has given them grandchildren, then their unfair behaviour should also be pointed out to them.
Daughter despair Despite telling my daughter that she was not to have a tattoo, she has gone ahead and had one done of her favourite band, carried out by someone who is not legally registered. She is 16, and knows my dislike of tattoos, and I feel she has done it just to spite me. Her father and I have been having problems with her rebelling, for some time now. She wasn’t always like this. The problem with tattoos is that they are so permanent. I would say, it is probably a phase she is going through. Teenagers, especially, will try and push parental boundaries. The more something is forbidden, the more attractive it is to them. I would say back off and leave her to her own devices, whatever fad she leans towards, it’s not going to last. Choices made when people are young, will be a far cry from what they want when they are 40. She won’t still be wanting a Tattoo of One Direction then, will she? Tattoos can be removed. But, they do leave a scar! Write to Sara in confidence. A pseudonym will be used if you wish. Sara reads all letters and can give a personal reply. Audition for Annie KEY ROLES – including the lead – are up for grabs in auditions for a Costa Blanca version of the hit Broadway musical ‘Annie’. By Jack Troughton THE CALPE-based Footlights Theatre Group has started its initial rehearsals for the production and November shows in Alfa del Pi, Calpe, and Rojales. The story centres on a group of girls from a New York orphanage in the thirties. As well as adult performers, the show calls for a group of girls aged between six and 13. Footlights is also looking to recruit a very special talented girl who looks a ‘playing age’ of 11 to 12 to fill the title role. She must have a strong stage personality, a good singing voice and be able to move well. The show’s Director Trevor Harder said: “All the girls must have allround talent and be able to sing and move well. We are hoping there will be a good response to an opportunity to shine in a major local production.” Footlights is also looking to find older boys and the group needs to swell its ranks with more adult performers, particularly men – Annie is a big family orientated musical and requires a ;large cast of different ages to fill the various roles. The main rehearsal night is Thursday evenings in Calpe and auditions for all principal parts takes place on Monday 4th May. Performances and rehearsals are in English. Anyone interested in joining the cast of Annie can contact Trevor on 618 164 351 or via secretary.footlights@gmail.com who will be pleased to supply all the necessary information.

Windows 8 Security
Email auntyvirus@roundtownnews.com
DEAR AUNTY, My MacAfee Security has just run out on my 12 month old Windows 8.1 Laptop. I’m in a quandary as to whether to renew it. I am a basic retired light user, and it is expensive to renew. My friends tell me that Windows has sufficient built in security. I’m unsure about how safe the “freebies” are, and if I did use one, would I have to close down Windows Security? Hope you can help. Tom. Aunty says: Windows has some security, but not a built in Antivirus, unless you install it and turn it on. It is called Microsoft Security Essentials. Most of the “freebies” - Avast, MSE, AVG - offer sufficient security and work fine with W8. And most work in conjunction with the W8 security. You will only notice a drop in performance if you run multiple Antivirus and Malwares at the same time. The drop in performance comes from all these programs scanning files in use all that the same time. Response: Many thanks for that, Aunty.
Dropbox removal
HI AUNTY Can you help me? When I open my lap top it seems to configure too many times before I can get onto my computer sites, and then DROPBOX comes on the screen which I don’t want - but it goes off when I delete it, returning next time I open my lap top. Appreciate it if you can help - many thanks, Hazel Aunty says: It sounds like you, or a program you have installed, has also installed DROPBOX onto your PC. Some programs do this when you install things using the default install settings, and install all sorts of things you may not want... So the easiest way to remove it is go to your programs list, and uninstall it.
Mobile antivirus HELLO AUNTY: Do I need an antivirus system on my iPhone 5 or on my wife’s Samsung? Keep up the good work. Barry. Aunty says: Most tablets and iPhones are unlikely to get viruses as most of the apps you download will be checked before they are made available on apps stores. The apps are what’s called ‘Sandbox’, which means that they don’t have permission to access the system files of the phone. So the phone is not going to get a virus, unless you install an app from an ‘unofficial’ source. However, if you want an antivirus system, simply look in the apps store for one that you want. Response: Thanks for your reply: it has put my mind at rest.

Are you stagestruck?
STAGESTRUCK ARE hitting the boards again, this time under a brand new Director. by Keith Nicol
LOCAL PERFORMANCE group Stagestruck meets twice weekly at Casa Ventura and rehearsals are in full swing for their Spring show “An Evening with Stagestruck” . Under the new directorship of Leigh Humphries the group are enjoying rehearsals and are looking forward to opening night. Leigh has a very strong C.V to carry the group forward. In her early years her mum enrolled her into Peggy O’Farrel’s stage school in East Ham. There she did stage work, filming and modelling. Leigh loved it and worked her socks off. Through hard work she made it to the London Palladium where she performed in a number of pantos with some very famous faces, including Jimmy Tarbuck, Terry Scott, Ronnie Corbett and Clive Dunn, who she danced with to his hit song Grandad. Her most unusual claim to fame is that she was one of Ken Dodds “Diddymen “ she wore a hooped costume, that made her very round and she took the part of “Mick the Marmaliser” she can still remember the little ditty she had to sing to this day. Since coming to Spain two-years
ago Leigh decided she would like to join another theatre group. She came to a Stagestruck performance and knew that this was the group for her. She auditioned in February 2014 and has had parts in “Ancient Grease” and “The Panto Pensioners save Christmas”. When director Stella Readon suddenly said she had to return to UK, the whole Stagestruck group was devastated. A meeting was called and a unanimous decision was made to carry on with Leigh taking the part of Director. Stella
is still in contact with the group and writing a new script based on the story of Sleeping Beauty just in time for Christmas but currently the group are getting ready to perform their Spring show at the Cardenal Beluga Theatre on May 7th, 8th and 9th. All money raised goes towards local charities. Tickets are on sale now priced at only 6€ including a free drink on arrival at the theatre. Come and have a great evening, with songs and sketches from four of the groups most popular shows.

The Orihuela Costa Male Voice Choir April Tour THE ORIHUELA Costa Male Voice Choir has just completed a highly successful three concert tour to Albir and Alfaz de Pi where they thrilled audiences with the excellence and vitality of their singing. Conducted by their internationally famous musical director Nigel Hopkins the choir sang a selection of well-loved songs. Venues ranged from the Residencia Anneke, the Forum Mare Nostrum to the Fundacio FRAX where the choir received a standing ovation. During Nigel’s visits, choirs have raised considerable funds for the Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer and this tour has raised well in excess of 2,000€ to the delight of Pamela Dawson Tasker who co-ordinated the venues for the tour. The choir has many more exciting events planned with two joint concerts with the original Chivenor Branch of the Military Wives Choir, made famous by Gareth Malone on the BBC at the Ecumenical Church, La Zenia, on Saturday 25th April. The choir will then be hosting a visit by the Costa Blanca Male Voice Choir on 31st May when they will be performing a joint concert at La Zenia Church. Tickets can be purchased at The Ponderosa, La Zenia for all of Nigel’s concerts. To join this excellent and dynamic choir contact Nigel on 966 775 976 or come along to La Zenia Church at 11am Thursday mornings.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin
Direct Object Pronouns cont’d... WE ARE moving forward with our explanation of “direct object pronouns”, so let’s take as our starting point the sentence we looked at last week: “El niño lee el libro” - The boy reads the book “El niño lo lee” - “The boy reads it” This sentence demonstrates what we have learnt so far. That is that a direct object pronoun replaces the direct object (the thing that directly receives the action of a verb). In other words, in English “it” replaces “the book”. We also saw that in Spanish, the equivalent of it goes in front of a verb. There are in fact three instances when the direct object pronoun can be linked to the end of a verb itself, but we will look at those later. In English we have several direct object pronouns and here they are: me us you him, her, it them We need to be clear in our minds that we are talking about object pronouns specifically here, because two of them
47
are also used in English as subject pronouns (you and it) and one of them doubles up as a possessive adjective (her). If you didn’t understand that last sentence don’t worry too much, just remember that some of these words can have other uses. We tend to complain when Spanish words have duplicate uses and meanings, but in fact English is just as bad, it’s just that we don’t have to think about it so we don’t usually realise. We can illustrate the use of these words in English with the verb “love”. For example “I love you” (“I” is the subject pronoun, and “you” is the object pronoun). “You love me” (“You” is the subject pronoun, “me” is the object pronoun). From this example you can see that the word “you” has two uses, as subject and object, whereas “I” has to change to “me” when used as an object. You can go through all the different permutations yourselves to see how all of these words work, so I won’t clog up the rest of this article with examples. You may find it has the added benefit of making you feel all nice and loved. So, I hear you ask, how do we do all

this in Spanish? Well, here are the basic direct object pronouns: me me nos us te you os you lo it /him los them (m) la it/her las them (f) I would be lying to you if I didn’t admit straightaway that there are one or two complications here regarding the difference between people and things in the third person, but that deserves a longer explanation and will have to wait for now.In the meantime, here are some simple examples for you to cogitate on over the next week. Hopefully you’ll still be with me then! “El niño me ve” The boy sees me; “El niño te ve” The boy sees you; “El niño lo ve”, The boy sees it / him; “El niño la ve”, The boy sees it / her; “El niño nos ve” The boy sees us; “El niño os ve” The boy sees you (familiar plural); “El niño los ve” The boy sees them (m); “El niño las ve” The boys sees them (f).

Breastfeeding can lead to Increased I.Q but most mothers give up – WHY? FOR SEVERAL years a link has been noted between breastfeeding and increased I.Q. but now more evidence is being put forward. A study of nearly 14,000 children by McGill University in Canada has found a positive link to breastfed babies performing better in I.Q. tests by the age of 6yrs. Those who breastfed exclusively for the first three months - with many also continuing to 12 months - scored an average of 5.9 points higher on IQ tests in childhood. Teachers also rated these children significantly higher academically than control children in both reading and writing. Fatty acids in breast milk are thought to boost intelligence, but it seems the physical and emotional aspect of breastfeeding may lead to permanent changes to brain development. Despite yet another advantage of breastfeeding, and the U.K. government recommendation that mothers breastfeed exclusively for the first six months, research shows that whilst three quarters start off breastfeeding, just one in four
is still breastfeeding by six months. Successful breastfeeding is not easy! It requires 100% commitment from the mother, her partner, and health care providers. There are definite ‘secrets of success’ and your midwife will ensure you start correctly from day one. Also, psychological preparation is a must, especially for partners. Unfortunately advice given by some health-care professionals is not always good. I hear mothers being told to ‘top up’ with formula – NO! It always hurts at first – NO! Clearly the lactation cycle is not understood by many health care professionals. Recently I learned of wrong advice where a new mother started to produce colostrum but a professional in a local hospital mistook this for pus and advised her to stop feeding. This disastrous mistake destroyed this mothers plan to breastfeed. So it is important for expectant mothers and their partners to get the right advice from an experienced, trusted midwife. Women, with the correct knowledge, will be able to identify which advice is actually correct and beneficial, and which is best ignored!

If you want to lose weight and stay healthy - You must eat… OF the most important “ ONE principles of weight loss is never to starve yourself
Dr Mark Hyman
NataliaPH is a founder of Love Yourself to Health, a web portal dedicated to promoting healthy, conscious life style. Subscribe to the free newsletter at: www.LoveYourselftoHealth.Info
“
Are you one of those people who have been struggling with their weight all their life? You lose some, you gain some and soon after you get depressed because not only has it not stayed off, it returned abundantly! Does it sound familiar? Join millions of people suffering from that challenge. Now, you can equip yourself with practical, valuable and wise information and never, ever suffer like that again. I have tested these findings on myself as I had been on the rollercoaster myself for years. 20 years of an eating disorder, metabolism compromised and decades of despair, I can most definitely testify to the truth of what is written here… We have been conditioned to believe that being healthy and slim must be hard, that we must diet, that we must exercise our butts off until we exhaust ourselves and burn those calories… As it appears, a new, functional medicine has different answers for us and they appear to be just common sense! The answer to a healthy, long, energetic life at your ideal weight is: eating real food, letting go of all the “no fat”, “low cal”, “sugar free” nonsense… Ask yourself a simple question: am I eating real food? Am I cooking and preparing my food so that I have control over what goes into my body? Hippocrates once wrote: “let thy food be thy medicine”, are you letting it? Once you start eating real food, calorie counting becomes irrelevant. Dr Hyman, the founder of functional medicine states very clearly: “The reason diets backfire almost all the time is because people restrict too much (….) they allow the number of calories they consume to drop below their resting metabolic rate. For the average person it is about 10 times your weight in pounds. This is the baseline daily need for your body to simply exist (meaning stay in bed and don’t expend any energy).” I will continue with the story in future articles.

Horoscopes Warring Mars takes a square on Jupiter and there may be some practical reason for the recent spate of delays and cancellations after all. On thing is for sure this week has to matter in some special way, since whatever you currently keep up your sleeve needs to find a way to surface so it can be implemented with luck and fortune coming your way. Venus squares up to Neptune and you would be advised to check all aspects of finances very carefully. Somehow and someway somebody isn’t paying their way right now and this is stretching the budget in every which way. Since your money should be working for you and not you for it, look at possibilities and learn to tighten your belt! Mercury trines with Pluto and this has a knock on effect that will allow you to see things from a different angle, and for good reason too. Your naturally trusting nature has allowed a loophole to open up and this is about to begin to work against you and all that you believe in. Take immediate steps to check things out, and then turn the tables around. The crab claws are already snapping when you hear that recent events have been reported in such a negative way. Your easy going style has to go right out the window as you endeavour to set the record straight, pointing a definite finger of blame at those who started something they cannot continue. Blame Mercury and Neptune for bringing this on. As the Sun enters Taurus your energies turn to the purist execution of love and tenderness. Now that you have learnt to love yourself, what comes next is sure to bring you closer to a true desire and a need to spread a little love around while you can. A great time to kick off an ambitious project and to look favourably at all types of promotion open. The selfish and cruel actions of somebody you thought was a friend has caused you a lot of pain; but you did what you had to do, and if the truth hurts then that simply wasn’t your fault. Planetary occlusion in the form of a trine with Ceres, in cahoots with Saturn, calls time on any further nonsense and puts you where you belong, in pole position. Look to your good sister, Taurus, to muster up the courage to make the sweeping changes you would benefit from. You have worked unselfishly to please others who obvious didn’t know what side their bread was buttered. It isn’t selfish to want things to happen for yourself, and right now, and in the current scheme of things, it is inspiring. Midweek actions see Mars and Pluto acting up together. Whatever you do this week, keep your temper and just bite your tongue because you have bigger fish to fry, and the timing is wrong to show anything to the contrary. A promotion sees you taking control and showing others just what you are capable of, when left to your own devices! Both Venus and Mercury connect directly with Jupiter this week, bringing some much needed relief for you from the vigours brought about over the past few weeks. What will be will be, but your endearing Planetary leader has something waiting for you that will make things a lot easier and will sincerely help to put the colour back in your cheeks This should be a time of rich reward, but you are hard on yourself and though there may be a reason for it, it is hard to understand why everything you are doing becomes such an uphill struggle. It isn’t selfish to be thinking of yourself right now and, yes you do deserve to be a part of substantial and beneficial changes that are closely afoot. The Venus square on Neptune foretells a romance as love comes knocking. It is hard to judge your feelings right now, but so too must there be a time to enjoy yourself for a change. All work and no play..... is just how the saying goes, and you have so much to contribute to a new relationship. Forget the pain of the past, time to move on. Neptune sextiles Mercury and this is the perfect signal you need to move onwards and upwards to where you want to be right now. A relationship seems to be going from strength to strength, so put plans on hold in favour of doing what seems right just now; especially because it will help you to make you feel good about yourself, for a change.

The long goodbye
THAT FINAL departure from this Earth is often something people fear. When the process starts to work, as it always seems to do, and do very well, there is no pain and suffering; just an elated feeling that the longest and most difficult journey of our life is in motion, and there is no way of stopping it. Very often with a client I am shown the death scene of a dear departed one. They link back to Earth in the recollection because for them it was their very last and final Earthly act. Unless it is needed to prove a new pain free existence or has some particular relevance I am inclined not to put my client through the unnecessary trauma of re living it, greatly preferring that some other happy event is the bringer of the evidence of soul survival. I get so many letters that are laced with fear and doubt that focus on the regret that a loved one died peacefully alone or in their sleep, and as such there was no final focus, no witnessing of the finality of that last breath. Would you want that? Really? I have absolutely no qualms about passing, it will eventually happen to me, but first I do have to focus on what is left of my life. Thankfully to the depths of my spiritual soul I can say that the biggest truth is that death isn’t the end of life, it is very much the beginning of something rather wonderful, something new. Throughout life we have been governed by experiences, some happy and some sad, and some so profound that they had the effect of changing our lives. So too will life in the Spirit World be anything more than we would wish it to be for ourselves. When the time comes we will make our transition and hopefully leave behind a legacy of all we have achieved because it is that memory of us that it so perfect to accept as a full and righteous testimony of a life lived. Somethings are not made clear to us in this World, and yet they will become very transparent when we survive on the other side of the fence. It is always important here to explain that the pathway to Spirit is also the pathway of return, back to Earth. Loved ones thrive when they can rest in happiness because all that they have left behind is going
Kenny‛s Postbag
well. They feel our sorrow and they monitor our respect, and then they do the obvious when they engage in the happiness of our continuity here on Earth in the knowledge that they have safely reached the place they have to be in. Many worried souls do not automatically take their rightful place in the Spirit World; and the number one reason for this is that they are too concerned with what they left behind. Sometimes it is the things they did, and sometimes it can be the things that they didn’t do that become the chief focus, until they are adequately counselled not to regret, because this unleashes a bitterness or a fear of failure, or a trauma. We don’t want or need to have to cope with anything like that, do we? Whenever I am accused of disturbing the dead, as I have been for the past fifty years or so, I have an instant reply, because if the message is picked up it is the wish of Spirit that they are disturbed. Rather then disturbance there comes along instead a focus which highlights survival and can start that great process of two way communication all those in Spirit long for. The less fear created on Earth the smoother is the transition into the Spirit World and the easier it will be to come to terms with things for both the living and the dead, who combine together to support the afterlife and all it can bring. I often feel sorry for those in Spirit who have nobody to connect with. Some families exclude the rights that the deceased have to make a contact with Earth because of their fear, or by adhering to heresay or nonsense. Rights are rights and dignity must be preserved at all costs, not tossed aside. However there are many who scoffed during their life here on Earth, those who did not believe in the spiritual continuity of the soul who have found out the great truth, have survived in Spirit, and need now to tell someone about the process. Sharing their rightful newly converted and everlasting life with those they love here on Earth, they certainly didn’t want to ever leave; but being spiritual means having faith, and you will never, ever have to say that final convoluted, long, goodbye!

My sister who was at her side with me said that she was talking to someone we couldn’t see. Is this possible? Heidi J. Yes, Heidi, I think it highly probable that she was starting her longest journey to the destination of her soul and was probably oblivious to anything else. Death scenes are pretty tragic and it would seem that your Mother was encountering somebody who was helping her understand the process. Often it is the Guardian Angel who comes to take the departed to the start of a new journey, but loved ones such as a partner can be there if they have made a promise to be. By now your Mother will be in good safe hands, well looked after and free of any pain too.

Benitachell Bowls Club
U3A’s Extraordinary General Meeting
The meeting was called to ask members to approve the 2014 accounts and to vote on a proposal put forward by the Committee to change the date of the AGM from the 4th Quarter to the 1st Quarter of the year. The President, Jill Cole, confirmed that the organisation’s solicitor had been consulted regarding the change
in the date of the AGM from the 4th Quarter to the 1st Quarter of the year as noted in the Constitution and his answer had been formally received. She also confirmed that the existing committee members had agreed to serve to March 2016, an extra three months. With just under 300 present both the 2014 budget and the
proposed change in date of the AGM wereunanimously approved by the members present with a show of hands. After the formal business, Meri and John Snell, members of the local ‘Lions’ organisation, gave an interesting and well received talk about its evolution and history, and which charities they support.
THERE WAS another great turnout for the Benitachell Bowls Club’s “Last Player Standing” competition. The last player standing on each rink went into the final, and also the first to be out on each rink went into a play-off. This years’ winner, hot from the team winning the Easter Triples was Tim Woodcock with Howard Sawkins in second place. Tim Woodcock together with Jacquie & David Roberts also won the Javea Easter Triples competition. Our congratulations go to them all. The BBC prides itself on giving support and training to new bowlers and Tim Woodcock is a prime example of the success they can achieve with the right encouragement. Tim has been playing for less than a year. Congratulations on a truly remarkable achievement for such a new bowler. For details about the club and for a full update of all forthcoming competitions, and results, see www.benitachellbowlsclub.com

The Masters has produced a number of great headlines and stories. SO WHAT would be the one outstanding story to emerge from the first golf major of the year? By Tony Myles THE RISE of Jordan? The return of the Tiger? The record shattering scores? For me the story of the Masters is “The integrity of James Hahn.” In popular sports feigning injury is now an accepted and expected activity. Using tactics to disadvantage your opponent are commonplace. The exception is Golf. In golf there is no honour in winning unless it has been achieved with meticulous honesty and that is why I would hail the real hero of the Masters as James Hahn. On the first green he declared that his ball had moved and therefore he should be penalised by one shot. The fact is that the ball moved by one dimple and had he said nothing, no one would have noticed. His reward for his honesty was a score of 3 over par and just one too many to enable him to make the cut. In his words “Missed cut by 1. Sometimes you don’t get rewarded for doing the right thing, but it
doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do the right thing.” Campbell and I have argued often about the fact that some of Golf’s rules appear absurd but whilst they remain in force we both applaud the player who applied them with such immense integrity. For just a few brief moments I was top of the Leader Board and then, before I could bask in the glory, my position was usurped and, along with it, my chance of winning the excellent prize on offer by Continental Wealth Management (CWM). At each of Campbell’s competitions CWM will nominate one par three and any drive which is close to the pin will be measured and, if it is inside any of the previous lengths, the distance will be recorded on the Nearest the Pin Leader Board. At the end of the year the top five places will be awarded an additional prize and the winner will be presented
with a weekend for four golfers in Mallorca, including ferry crossing, hotel and golf fees. As we are now just one third of the way into the year there remains several more opportunities to get inside the current record of 66cms. Lots of luck!
Head He2ad Chilly texts! Tony M - I notice that you don’t use text messaging very often. Campbell - I find it is often easier and more efficient if I pick up the phone and place a call. Tony M - I agree that it is often better to have a verbal conversation and especially as texting can lead to some awful mistakes. Campbell - There have been some classic examples and usually they can be quite funny. Tony M - The other reason is that the keys are very small and when it is cold it can be difficult to choose the correct letter. Campbell - Ah yes. What you are experiencing there is that well known problem of typothermia!

Latest Honda Civic DEVELOPING A brand and generating loyalty are two extremely difficult concepts. HONDA HAS to be one of the success stories of the motor industry. When it launched the Civic in 1972 I doubt it envisaged that 20m models would be sold across the world over the next 40 years or that the future would see the Civic being built in the UK. It’s certainly become a popular vehicle and this has subsequently boosted the Honda brand and promoted loyalty The 1.8-litre i-VTEC SR Manual I’m testing is finished in polished metal and is pleasing to the eye. The panoramic glass roof allows greater amounts of light into the cabin, which is certainly helpful when the interior is black. There are a couple of niggles though. Yes, the rear spoiler hampers vision but more importantly I have to watch my knees when I get into the cabin because the corner of the dashboard protrudes and my knee catches it. It hurts. Some might appreciate the warning beeps when reversing or when another vehicle is near but I find them off-putting. It’s an enjoyable drive and the six-speed manual box is a joy to use. However, the front window demists far quicker than the rear window. You would have thought they would clear at the same time. So I have to wait patiently before I can see out of the rear window.
One of the Civic’s strong points is practicality. The boot is far bigger than its competitors’ and there’s loads of room inside thanks to what Honda calls ‘Magic Seats’. These fold in a clever range of combinations, freeing up plenty of space. The Civic has a five-star EuroNCAP rating thanks to its plethora of safety equipment including adaptive cruise
control and collision mitigation – which applies the brakes if it thinks you’re about to crash. There’s a choice of four engines, two petrol and two diesel. Petrol options are a 1.4litre or a 1.8-litre engine, available with either a manual or automatic gearbox.” Watch the video at www.testdrives.biz
