Captura nets murder suspect ARMED POLICE raided a luxury Costa Blanca villa to arrest a 54-yearold British man wanted for the kidnap and murder of Francis Brennan whose tortured body was washed up on a beach a year ago. by Jack Troughton PAUL GRAHAM Monk was arrested at a villa on the outskirts of Javea and is said to be a close associate of Paul Scott – alleged to be the mastermind of the killing of the 25-year-old Liverpool man. Francis Brennan was snatched from the streets in the centre of the Marina Alta resort in January last year by three men posing as Spanish police officers. His body was wrapped in an industrial-sized bin bag when it was discovered at La Zenia on Orihuela Costa in March 2014. Monk’s arrest came just a month after being named in the latest round of Operation Captura’s list of 10 ‘most wanted’ fugitives believed to be hiding in Spain. His detention means three suspected criminals have been arrested since the new appeal was launched last month. Guardia Civil officers with colleagues from the UK’s National Crime Agency swooped on Monk’s hideaway. An imitation firearm, a silencer, 125,000€, in cash, and fake Slovenian documents were also seized. Continued on page 3.

Continued from front page MONK, ORIGINALLY from Romford, Essex, was arrested as he directed workmen laying a marble patio around the home’s swimming pool. A video of the dramatic raid has been released by the Guardia. He is wanted by the Metropolitan Police for drug trafficking – he is alleged to have been involved in the handover of 1kg of cocaine in Cockfosters, London, in May 2013 and is linked with the seizure of 24kg of cannabis in Colchester in October that year. EXTRADITION However, his extradition back to the UK will be put on hold while he is quizzed over the kidnapping and murder. A spokesman for the Guardia Civil said Monk was arrested last Tuesday as part of the force’s Operation Brennan – and praised the involvement of private citizens in passing on their suspicions to police. He said information exchanged between the Guardia Civil and their British counterparts identified “the possible mastermind of the murder could be Paul Scott” and Monk had maintained a “close relationship” with him. He said Guardia Civil officers had analysed dozens of phone calls related to the killing and these had linked monk to both 32-year-old Merseysider Scott and the murder. And it was revealed that Monk’s villa had been under surveillance for several months. “And it was found that after his name and photograph appeared on the ‘most wanted’, as an extra security measure he did not leave the house at any time, getting other people to bring food and other goods to the villa where he was hiding – he was leading the life of an authentic fugitive”. Scott was recognised and arrested as he flew into Norfolk last year in a light aircraft. He has since been jailed for 14 years at Liverpool Crown Court as part of a 26-strong gang behind a drug importation conspiracy behind a massive £4 billion plot. He was on the run for four years and is currently facing extradition proceedings to be brought back to Spain and be quizzed over the kidnap and killing. APPEAL Monk was the latest arrest after being identified under Operation Captura. The March appeal has brought quick results. Already behind bars, arrested in the same 24 hours, was Jayson McDonald, 37, from Acton, who had been hiding in Spain

Paul Scott

but fled to Holland after a raid on his Malaga home. He was found hiding under a bed in Amsterdam – he was wanted as being part of a Europe-wide crime network importing Class A drugs into the UK. And Shane Walford, 38, from Coventry, who went on the run while on licence for manslaughter and publicised at the same time as Monk and McDonald was arrested in Fuerteventura about to board a flight to Ireland. It means that 68 out of 86 fugitives named on the Operation Captura lists have now been caught. Dave Allen, Head of the UK International Crime bureau at the National Crime Agency, said of Monk and McDonald’s apprehension: “Our ability to capture two of our most wanted fugitives in different countries within 24 hours demonstrates our international reach. “Nowhere is a safe haven for British fugitives and we will continue to work closely with our law enforcement partners across the world to track them down and return them to the UK to face justice.” People living in Spain can contact Crimestoppers via the Spanish freephone 900 555 111 and the call will be answered in the UK; information can also be passed anonymously via the website www.crimestoppers-uk.org.

Man kills his computer

POLICE IN Colorado have cited a 37-year-old man for carrying his computer into an alley then shooting it eight times with a handgun after what authorities said had been a long battle with the uncooperative machine. Lucas Hinch was cited for discharging a firearm within city limits after officers responded to a “shots fired” call early on Monday evening, stated the Colorado Springs Police Department. “Investigation revealed a resident was fed up with fighting his computer for the last several months,” said the statement. “He took the computer into the back alley and fired eight shots into the computer with a handgun, effectively disabling it,” it added. The Colorado Springs Gazette newspaper cited police as saying Hinch was good-natured about the citation, and that he told officers he had not realized he was breaking the law. A judge will decide what penalty the citation carries.

Poker-playing gangster jailed

Do you have a story? Email rtnmail@roundtownnews.com

DRUG SMUGGLER Robert Knight who fled to Spain to avoid justice was finally jailed for 11 years last week at Birmingham Crown Court. by Jack Troughton ONCE NAMED one of Britain’s ‘most wanted’ men, the 53-year-old’s luck ran out last September when he was arrested in a Calpe sports bar playing ‘Texas

Hold’em’. A joint operation involving Spanish National Police, Britain’s National Crime Agency (NCA), and West Midland’s Police proved the Costa Blanca was not a

Robert Knight

“safe haven”. Knight, from Walsall, had been identified by the NCA and charity Crimestoppers in 2013 as a fugitive believed to be hiding in Spain as part of the ongoing Operation Captura initiative. He was arrested when armed officers surrounded Saffy’s Sports Bar in Calpe Port and led away in handcuffs. After appearing in a Madrid court, an extradition order was issued and he was on a plane back to the UK; spending five months behind bars on remand before his court appearance. And last Thursday a Birmingham jury found Knight guilty of conspiracy to import cocaine, a Class A drug. AIRPORT Knight went on the run from West Midlands Police following the seizure of 6kg of cocaine at Heathrow Airport in London in April 2008. Five other men were arrested at the time and were later jailed for their parts in the crime. Following the sentencing, DCI Sab Johal, of the Serious Organised Crime Unit, underlined that Knight’s capture was an example to others that the law had a very long arm. “It may sound like a cliché, but this case reinforces the message that ‘you can run, but you can’t hid’,” he said. If Knight thought that after six years he had successfully evade capture and he had dropped off our radar, then he was mistaken. “We were working with Crimestoppers, the NCA, Spanish counterparts; and last September this work came to fruition.” The detective added: “The 11 year sentence handed to Knight is justified by the severity of the sophisticated drug importation and the distribution network.”

Coffee spill behind Serbian President’s airplane scare BLAMED INITIALLY on “engine failure”, a government jet carrying Serbia’s president to Italy was forced to turn back when the co-pilot spilled coffee on the instruments. by Patricia Thompson ADVISERS TO President Tomislav Nikolic described being “thrown around the cabin” when the plane, a 34-year-old French-built Falcon 50, began tumbling through the air. The plane landed safely back in Belgrade, but Nikolic was forced to cancel his official visit to meet Pope Francis in the Vatican, and his advisers put the incident down to yet another malfunction on the ageing, incident-prone aircraft. An investigation determined that the co-pilot, Bojan Zoric, had spilled coffee on the instrument panel “due to ongoing turbulence”. “I began wiping the panel and accidentally activated the ‘emergency slat’ button,” which automatically turned off the automatic pilot and the plane began losing altitude, Zoric said according to Serbia’s Civil Aviation Directorate . The pilot took over command, managed to pull the plane up and sought permission to turn back to Belgrade, Zoric added. He said that one of the engines then stopped working but was restarted on the way back to the airport. The Directorate has temporarily suspended Zoric’s license.

Expats apply to vote

A SURGE in applications by expats in next month’s British General Election has taken numbers registered to over 110,000 – described as a “fantastic” achievement. by Jack Troughton

The independent Electoral Commission has attempted to encourage British citizens living abroad to register for the 7th May ballot since last year’s European Parliament election when just over 7,000 overseas residents joined electoral lists. And campaigners fighting to give all British expats a true voice in the House of Commons, hope it will prompt politicians in London to address a number of key issues. These include overturning the ‘15 year rule’ which denies British expats a vote after living abroad over that period, the ongoing debate over EU membership, and pension rights – including the Winter Fuel Payment, at present scheduled to end for many retired people in September. It is estimated more than one million British expats living and working in Europe were denied a vote – and, additionally, a similar number worldwide. Brian Cave, of Vote for Expat Brits, said he hoped people registering to cast a vote actually did so. However, he said of the registration: “This is a magnificent advance,

not only in numbers but in what those numbers convey – the voice of the British citizen in the world. “It could persuade a future government to realise that the citizens abroad are important...it could make the government realise that a dialogue with the citizens abroad is necessary.” He said the winter fuel payment was a current and controversial example of how expats interests could be harmed. AGGRESSIVE “It is not the amount involved but the sad aggressive discrimination developed under the watch at the Department of Works and Pensions by Iain Duncan smith, which is harming the sick and poor amongst us.” And fellow campaigner Margaret Hales MBE, who lives on the Costa Blanca, welcomed the numbers registering for the coming election. “It takes away the reason they continue to beat us with – why we should not have a vote after 15 years because no one can be bothered to register,” she said.

“This is a general election that could go any way – and as a result of an election where constituencies will be won or lost on a few votes, a combined effort of all political parties and pressure groups have upped the game to register overseas voters.” Margaret said the campaign to get a vote for all expats had caught the eye of the BBC – which has shown a programme featuring British people living abroad and their desire for representation. “Thanks to everyone registering, the future government will have to take notice of us British living abroad...we must now all make sure we vote.” However, she said while it was now possible to register online, people could not vote the same way and relied on a postal or proxy vote. “Unfortunately, we are still voting in the same way as my ancestor (suffragette) Emmeline Pankhurst would have voted if she had not died just before the elections,” added Margaret. Secondary Classrooms suffer from overcrowding by Keith Nicol

ESO SECONDARY classrooms are more crowded in the Alicante province than elsewhere. In Alicante there is a predominance of municipalities that exceed or are close to 30 students per class. Elevated ratios maybe, but this does not reach 36, the maximum legal and where numbers climbed to in 2012 when Education Minister José Ignacio Wert launched the decree of urgent measures to reduce education spending. This increase was controversial and rejected by the educational community. Albatera is the municipality that comes out top, in the province, with more overcrowded classrooms at ESO level (31.19), with Pedreguer (30.92), Petrer (29.98), Campello (29.96), Rojales (29.89), Onil (29,73) Catral (29.69), San Vicente (29.65), La Nucia (29.50) and El Campello (29.28). These are the ten most affected. In the case of the provincial capital; Alicante records a ratio of 28.76. In contrast, the lowest classroom numbers are found in the villages of Benilloba (9.50) and Orba (18). Catral also has the most overcrowded classrooms at Primary Level in the Vega Baja, followed by a municipality of L’Alacantí. Until 2012, Catral averaged 25 pupils per class but that number has slowly risen and now stands at 26.69 students per class. Those that also exceed the 25 students threshold include Bigastro (25.44) and San Vicente del Raspeig (25.52) while getting close are Torrevieja (24.87), Callosa de Segura (24.82) and El Campello, with 24.63. New data has yet to be put forward to see if there is any connection between classroom numbers and the fact that in Valencia, the failure and year repeat rate for secondary students is about 30%; one of the highest in Spain. However, while Secondary classroom figures continue to grow, some programs, such as in Torrevieja have seen new schools recently opened at Primary school level and at Primary school throughout the region, most municipalities are coping.

Brother and sister reunited through Tinder after 15 years

A BROTHER and sister who last saw each other 15 years ago have been accidentally reunited through Tinder, the online dating app. Erik de Vries, 24, and Josphine Egberts, 22, from the Netherlands, both “swiped right” on the matchmaker site, not realising they were looking at pictures of their own sibling, according to NL Times. They lost contact after their parents separated in 1999 Erik moved to Belgium with their father and brother Maarten, while Josephine remained in the Dutch city of Breda with their mother, but when they began chatting through Tinder’s text messaging service in April, Erik quickly suspected that the woman was his long-lost sister. After sharing his suspicions with Jospehine, they swapped family histories and their unlikely situation became apparent. In order to be sure, Erik, now living back in the Netherlands, arranged to meet Josephine in a cafe a week later. “When I saw him, it was suddenly very clear.” said Josephine “It was so special to see my own blood brother again after 16 years.” They now plan to stay in touch.

Sewage works cause stink THE COST of connecting Costa Blanca homes to mains sewage has angered residents as quotes for the works drop through letter boxes. by Jack Troughton People living in the neighbouring urbanisations of Vista Ifach and Valle de Portet in Benitachell face weeks of disruption as the pipes are laid. However, it is the owners of houses in Valle de Portet who face paying thousands of Euros to construction company Opera Severitas SL to be connected to the mains in Calle del Algar. Householders are already looking to save money by employing their own engineers – and this week Benitachell Town Hall confirmed this was acceptable as long as the work was passed by council engineers. Currently the Valle de Portet homes have septic tanks but Benitachell is coming into line with EU rulings that they should have mains connections. Trevor and Moira Scotson told RTN they were waiting for a quote from a local plumber to make the connection – they have already received a 3,113€ estimate from Opera Severitas – which did not include taxes. “Our plumber believes it should cost a lot less,” said Trevor. “And I was in the building trade for over 40 years and I certainly believe it should cost a lot less. “I had asked the construction company’s engineer a number of times for the quote – when it finally arrived, it was horrendous.” At a public meeting, residents told Benitachell’s Mayor Josep Femenia that the majority of residents were pensioners and they could not afford such an unexpected bill. SYSTEM “We were not asked if we wanted it but apparently we have been told by the EU that we have to have this mains sewage system,” added Trevor.

Trevor and Moira Scotson

“My connection would be so simple to make, the ‘septica’ is only seven metres from the road and I think it could be done for 500€ to 700€ - certainly not more than 3,000€. “And it will be a lot more expensive for other homes because the work will be much more complicated.” The four month project has meant digging up Calle de Algar only 15 months after it was properly resurfaced after a 26 year wait. Moira said everyone living on the road was “very unhappy” with the ongoing disruption and the quotes they were receiving. “If they had said at the beginning what the costs were like-

ly to be for a connection, at least you could have started saving...but there’s absolutely no forethought in these things.” The town hall said that there were around 300 homes in Benitachell needing to be linked to the sewage system, while neighbouring Moraira had thousands of properties that would be affected. And the mayor said the EU ruling was made in an attempt to halt the risk of sewage contaminating the valuable aquifers and the water supply. “It has to be done and unfortunately people have to pay – but they can choose who they want to do the work as long as the town hall gives a confirmation to the project.”

Jobs “a priority” Read the paper online every week at www.roundtownnews.com

THE CREATION of year round employment for people in Calpe is “a priority” according Mayor Cesar Sanchez as the creation of a new business park goes ahead. by Jack Troughton The politician, the leader of Calpe’s Partido Popular, this week gave the go ahead for the project which will be built on land at the north of the municipality, with easy access to the N322 and AP7 motorway. Mr Sanchez said he and his party were committed to job creation to help the town’s economy and bring new businesses to the area. He said the business park would attract small and medium size enterprises to Calpe and their launch would offer employment opportunities. He said: “After many months of work, I can confirm the creation of the new business park. This will encourage companies to stay in Calpe and attract new enterprises. “Creating year long jobs beyond the summer season is one of our priorities for the future of Calpe.” Another part of the PP vision for Calpe and continue the town hall’s planned improvements is to provide “stability and common sense”. Mr Sanchez believes his current team have the local authority’s debts under control and wanted to continue to make the Marina Alta resort “a better place to live”.

Woman jailed for gunfire over McDonald’s order A US woman has been sentenced to three to seven years in prison for opening fire at a McDonald’s after her cheeseburger was twice served without bacon. by Patricia Thompson Shaneka Torres, 30, drew the weapon at the restaurant’s drive-through window in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in February 2014. When the snack was delivered the first time without bacon she complained to the manager, who offered her a complimentary burger on her next visit. Torres returned hours later to collect her free meal and initially seemed in good spirits, chatting up a cashier and slipping him her phone number, but then the burger arrived, again, without bacon! Before pulling the gun from her handbag, Torres allegedly said: “B****, you don’t know who you’re talking to.” The bullet shattered the drive-through window, but no one was injured. She was sentenced to one to five years for shooting at a building, plus two years for possessing a firearm during a felony. Torres must also pay $1,500 for the damage she caused

Do chimpanzees have Human Rights FOR THE first time in US history, a judge has decreed that a pair of chimpanzees are covered by the same laws that govern the detention of humans, effectively rendering the animals as legal “people”. New York Supreme Court Justice Barbara Jaffe said that the apes, held at Stony Brook University for research purposes, are covered by a writ of habeas corpus, the basic legal principle that lets people challenge the validity of their detention. The Nonhuman Rights Project, an animal rights group, wants the apes moved to a sanctuary. Jaffe has ordered a Stony Brook representative to appear in court to reply to the Nonhuman Rights Project’s petition that the animals are being held unlawfully. Regardless of whether the chimps are afforded legal personhood after the hearing, Natalie Prosin, the Nonhuman Rights Project’s executive director, said “We have scientific evidence to prove in a court of law that elephants, great apes, whales and dolphins are autonomous beings and deserve the right to bodily liberty. This strengthens our argument that these nonhuman animals are not property.”

Challenge ends in style THE GRUELLING 29km Mirador Challenge across Javea had a happy ending for the hairdressers and beauticians of Team Justin – they raised 1,540 euros in sponsorship for two good causes. by Jack Troughton Two teams of five from the Justin Salon in Moraira entered the competition on Sunday 12th April – and although there were three ‘casualties’ from one of the groups – cash still flowed in. The event links 15 miradors – official viewing points – along the Javea coast and 130 people took part in this year’s challenge. Cassie Leary and Sarah Sach thanked everyone who had so generously supported the teams and said the money was being evenly split between the Franciscan Home in Gandia and Javea-based Tanamera, which provides a foster home for abandoned podencos and greyhounds. And there is even talk of taking part again next year, swapping the more sedate ‘leisure’ section of the race for the even more testing ‘sport’ event. “It was a really good experience,” said Cassie. “The first climb was quite hard going but after that it was fine. “I am quite fit and managed my aerobics class the next day and the LAPS sponsored 5km walk last weekend.”

Cassie has already delivered 770€ to Brother Guillermo in Gandia, along with a bag of clothes, when she went to cook for the 55 men currently in residence. On the menu was roasted pumpkin soup, spaghetti Bolognese, and apple and berry crumble. “I am hoping to spread the word about the home, it is a good cause and they are so grateful for everything they receive,” she added. Sarah said she found the hardest part of the race was the climb from Javea Port to the lighthouse at San Antonio “yet other people in the team found that part easy.” She added: “It was a bit weird. At the time, although it was hard going in places, the whole thing was not too difficult. “It felt really good to cross, a bit of an achievement because it was a long way – but there was a great atmosphere as we came along the Arenal and it makes it all worthwhile to raise such a lot of money for these two good causes.”

Fickleness prevails I have lived on the Costa Blanca for over 15 years. I have a lovely life and have been very lucky that I have some very dear kind friends. I keep myself very much to myself and always try to stay away from trouble. I am a member of various groups which include many different nationalities. I make a conscious decision to steer clear of complete British groups. What I find sad is that it is very hard to find trustworthy people. Sitting on the sidelines I keep my eyes and ears open. There are many gossips and within the expat community there seems to always be a drama or somebody stabbing someone else in the back. People moved to Spain with there own ideas and agendas but it seems the pack mentality of an expatriate means that at times they revert back to childlike behaviour. Fickleness prevails. I feel it is sad that you have to hold a little of yourself back as being open and laying all your cards on the table sometimes gives others the red light to take advantage. I was always taught to do unto others as you would have done to yourself. The sad truth is that as an observer I have watched over the years that clearly a lot of expats have no respect for others or themselves. Jean Andrews,Mutxamel

Clever Dog I JUST loved reading about Alfie (Edition 808), the little Yorkshire Terrier who got himself rescued by the RSPCA. It’s heart warming to read a story like that, instead of all the bad news. P.S. It just shows how important it is to have your dog Micro-chipped. Margaret Hayter, La Siesta, Torrevieja.

Ruined for a tattoo THIS IS probably too late but I have to say to all tourists to be aware of having tattoos from the Chinese massage vendors and to remember to bring your EHIC card and insurance documents with you. My neighbours brought a 21-year-old friend of their son on holiday with them. One day at the beach he had a tattoo done on his chest, by a Chinese man offering massage and tattoos. The man said it was ‘henna and harmless’- two hours later he was projectile vomiting but blamed it on the heat. He suffered two days’ illness and weird spaced-out episodes before he was taken home to the UK as everyone was so concerned (he was the only person who had

forgotten his EHIC card and insurance documents). On arrival he visited his local A&E department and after extensive tests he was told that he had toxic poisoning from the ink used on the tattoo. They told him it could have been fatal had he not returned home. He is now suffering with mental illness and may have to be admitted for treatment in a specialist hospital. I am telling you this as told to me by my neighbour but I think I have read about someone suffering adverse effects from a tattoo before. This young man’s life may be ruined for a tattoo. Vespa ride over tourism

Walking ‘The Way’

THE LEADER of Benidorm’s Ciudadanos is to ride a Vespa to Madrid to call for the resort to be officially recognised as a tourist destination and receive government financial support.

HUNDREDS OF walkers turned out in Villajoyosa on Sunday to celebrate the reopening of Alicante route of the historic pilgrimage to Camino de Santiago. Organisers expected 100 people to turn out for the walk and were delighted when more than 400 turned out to tread the first stage of the route – the 19km to Relleu. The event was staged to highlight the Camino de Santiago Villajoyosa and how it can be accessed – historic documents refer to pilgrims arriving in the Marina Baixa town since 1734. Town hall workers have already signed the route through the town. The distance from Villajoyosa to journey’s end in Santiago de Compostela is a gruelling 1,128km. However, Sunday’s walkers had a much gentler introduction to the route of the pilgrimage. Buses were waiting in Relleu to take them back to the start point – and each received a memento of the event.

Rafa Gasent gets on his bike

by Jack Troughton Rafa Gasent will set off for the capital on Sunday 3rd May and will lobby Congress asking for a change in the law. His journey will emulate the epic ride by former Mayor Pedro Zaragoza – considered the father of modern Benidorm – who rode a scooter to Madrid to win the approval of General Franco for bikinis to be worn on the town’s beaches.

Mr Gasent, who is the party’s candidate for mayor in next month’s elections, believes changing the status of Benidorm could win it a million Euros to compensate demands on its budget made by millions of visitors each year. “No one understands why Benidorm is not considered a tourist town,” said the politician. “The word ‘tourism’ was invented in Benidorm.”

The resort stands third in the league for overnight stays in Spain yet has failed to attract a change in its status and win much-needed subsidies. Mr Gasent hit out at politicians who had failed to address the problem for a decade and said his party was prepared to speak out at local, regional, and national level, to challenge “unjust issues like this”.

Farewell to the Iris Gardens

EVERYONE IS invited to the Iris Gardens Tea Party at Marnes next month organised by Calpe and Benissa Lions Club and the opportunity to see thousands of flowers in bloom. by Jack Troughton The gardens are open to the public daily from late March to the end of May but once a year the Lions are allowed to take over the grounds for a tea party to raise funds for Caritas. And because Christine Lomer and Nick Brown are planning to retire, it may be a last opportunity to take in the gardens and say goodbye. They have lived in Marnes for many years and from barren land took years to create a gardener’s delight in the hills near Bernia. The wonderland contains more than 50,000 spring bulbs, 1,000 roses, and over 500 different varieties of iris – all flowering from spring to late May to create a sea of colour and aroma and a wonderful place to explore. This year the Lion’s Tea Party takes place on Wednesday 13th May between 4.30pm and 6.30pm and the club hopes to welcome people visiting for the first time and guests returning for another look. Tickets are 8€ and as well as enjoying the plants, countryside and spectacular views,

the Iris Gardens

Happy eating

MEALTIMES FOR youngsters at an EMAUS home will be more enjoyable thanks to a 500€ from the team of volunteers at the Benitachell Charity Shop. The cash is being spent on new crockery and cutlery for the ‘big house’ at Altea, where the charity has its headquarters. And the shop team of amigos de Benitachell also donated baby

equipment which will be well used at the EMAUS baby unit, also based in Altea. Carole Saunders, President of Friends of the Children of EMAUS, which supports the youngsters cared for in homes across the region, said she would be spending the money in a Calpe shop – where a discount had already been negotiated. Pictured (from left) presenting the cheque are Dorothy Sweeney, charity shop secretary, Carole Thorn, Treasurer, Carole Saunders, and President Adrienne Marshall.

Monasteries and mosques HISTORY LOVING members of AMUX stepped back in time to enjoy guided tours of a historic monastery and a mosque to turn pages in Valencia’s history. by Jack Troughton Alfred Serrano Donet and Alma Dorndorf – both members of the Friends of the Museum of Xabia – pooled their expertise to insure fellow AMUX colleagues were able to enjoy the stories of the Royal Monastery of Santa Maria, at Simat de Valldigna and the Mosque of La Xara. Alfred is from the Simat area where the religious building stands and has carried out extensive studies of the monastery and mesquita. A history teacher, his recent talk to the association about the sites served to whet the appetites of members, who signed up for last Saturday’s trip. Built in Cisterian style, the monastery was founded in 1298 by King Jaime II ‘The Just’ and was in use until 1835. In 1991, it was acquired by the Valencia government and is being restored to its former glory. And the mosque at La Xara is considered one of the most important remnants of the Muslim religion within the ancient kingdom of Valencia. Built in around the 15th Century, it remained in use until 1525 when all Muslims in Spain were required to convert to Christianity. It is now dedicated to

Santa Ana. Alfred’s colleague Alma was able to help translate both his explanations and the official guides to both sites, increasing the enjoyment of English-speaking members of the society. AMUX – Amics de Museu de Xabia – brings together people of all nationalities with an interest in the history and archaeology of Javea and the Marina Alta. As well as supporting the town’s museum, it organises talks and outings, which are open to all. For more information, visit the museum or its blog, www.amuxabia.weebly.com

FATHER MARCUS Ronchetti has been appointed Senior Chaplain of the Costa Blanca Anglican Anglican Chaplaincy of the Holy Spirit, succeeding the Revd. Canon Peter Edwards – the longest serving Church of England priest on the Iberian Peninsula. by Jack Troughton

Father Peter moved to Spain 12 years ago from a London parish and Father Marcus has been working with him as a Chaplain. Father Ray Andrew has joined the team from South London to work with Father Marcus and Father Steve Foster. And Father Marcus and Father Ray will be licensed to their new roles at a special service at noon on Friday 1st May at La Fustera, when the Archdeacon of Gibraltar, the Venerable Geoffrey Johnston will preside as emissary of the Bishop of Europe. In one of his first acts at the helm of the chaplaincy, Father Marcus chaired the annual parish meeting, held at the Esmeralda hotel in Calpe and presented his “powerful vision” for the church, encompassing both growth and strength, reflecting the family of God and the work to be done to serve the Costa Blanca community. WARDEN At the meeting Andrew Johnson and Stephen Carden were admitted as Chaplaincy Wardens, Stephen Lemon was confirmed as Secretary and Gary Lloyd as Treasurer. After the formalities of the meeting and over lunch, a presentation was

Happy birthday Betty!

BETTY GUINNESS celebrated being 96 years young on Tuesday with fellow members of the U3A Javea group ‘Traveller’s Tales’. Betty, who is a popular and active member of several of the U3A groups, was serenaded by colleagues singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to mark the occasion. And the special occasion would have royal approval – Betty shares a birthday with the Queen, who was 89 on the same day.

Babe in arms SIX-WEEK-OLD PUP Eloise joined more than 40 dogs putting their best paw forward in the annual LAPS Sponsored Dog Walk but needed to be carried through the citrus groves of Pego. by Jack Troughton THE TINY puppy was ‘cuddled’ around the 5km by Kimberley, the manageress of the Local Animal Protection Society’s shelter just outside the town. Charity supporters exercised six other dogs from the shelter and the event raised a much-needed 1,185€ for LAPS, insuring it can continue to care for unwanted animals in the area. At the end of the walk the humans enjoyed bacon butties and iced drinks and chatted with the furthest travelled supporter, Liz Daus, whose main home is in Adelaide, South Australia. As reported in RTN, Eloise and her four siblings were rescued from a rubbish bin when they were just days old. They had been tied up inside a plastic bag. Despite the best efforts of the charity and volunteers bottle feeding the litter, she is the sole survivor but is thriving.

LAPS President Chrissie Edwards said afterwards: “A fantastic 1,185€ was raised on Sunday morning, an amount that will help us continue to care for unwanted animals in our area. “The LAPS charity always needs more volunteers to walk, clean, and socialise our animals. Of course fund raising is a yearlong effort and that’s why 40 people and their dogs gave up their Sunday morning lie in – not only to have an enjoyable outing but also to help raise money to aid animals in need or distress.” Chrissie thanked everyone who supported the event. “We know you enjoyed it and hope you will be able to join us again next year.” Facebook page, laps shelter pego, gives details of all the charity’s animals and for more information call Chrissie on 661 199 270 or Kimberley on 662 345 044.

home and garden

Starting your new garden or modifying an old one MOST EXPATRIATES buy properties in Spain with a very different lifestyle in mind to the one they had experienced previously. They envisage a more open air lifestyle to make the most of the generally drier warmer and healthier climate. However this is only possible if the garden is designed and constructed to support this. For instance: The provision of shade from the hottest suns and shelter from the coldest winds, for the extremes of temperature are very different to the average temperatures often quoted by tourist boards, estate agents and persons attempting to sell their house privately. The provision of good sized covered and open terraces for when the family or friends visit for meals or to partake in hobby activities or games. An interesting network of paths that do not turn boggy after monsoon like rainfalls. Colourful perfumed and productive with minimum monthly maintenance needs especially if you plan a busy working or social life. Safe for both young and elderly. A swimming pool located and surrounded by a low leaf drop mini garden so that it is not the dominating feature of the garden. Cooking features beyond a barbecue so that al fresco meals can be organised daily in good weather without the style of eating becoming boring. A collection of fruit trees and facilities to grow at least a

few ecological fruit and vegetables. Thick boundary hedges for privacy and hideaways for nesting birds. Trees that not only provide shade but also hide surrounding houses and possibly local eyesores. A challenge for the dedicated gardener/s in the family. A garden that looks great from wherever one stands or sits at all times of the year for with an outdoor lifestyle you will live within it and not just view it through rain splashed windows as so often happens in northern Europe. Hideaways for peaceful reads and siestas. Areas for children and grandchildren to play safely without constant supervision. Matches all aspects of the lifestyle that you foresee in both the short and longer term. The latter is very important if you are to be happy with your purchase. When we wrote the first edition of our practical and comprehensive book ‘Your Garden in Spain’ the sub title was ‘Practical ideas for gardens that suit your Spanish lifestyle’. Some years later our publisher Santana Books asked us to split the book into four in order to expand the chapters on growing fruit and vegetables and the development of gardens on apartment terraces and balconies. To differentiate the new edition of ‘ Your Garden in Spain’ the subtitle of the new one became ‘ From

planning to planting and maintenance’ but an essential chapter in both is Chapter 2.1 ‘Design the garden to match your lifestyle’ which includes an easy to follow self questionnaire to help you clarify your lifestyle needs. It would be worth reviewing and completing this before investing another euro in the garden. The book can be obtained from high street and internet bookshops including Amazon, The London Book Depository.

Bank identity crisis looms

BANK ACCOUNTS could be frozen if customers fail to provide up-to-date personal data under Spanish laws designed to combat money laundering and financing terrorism. The country’s banks must collect the information before the 30th April deadline – yet the obligation to keep digital records of clients’ personal data was introduced in a law passed in 2010 and gave five years to complete the task. There are around 70 million bank accounts in Spain and some 50 million of these are held by private individuals – leaving the sector with a mammoth task. However, claims that some five million clients are without the correct data are hotly disputed by banks. “We’re all prone to leaving things to the last minute,” admitted Jose Maria Roldan, President of the Spanish Banking Association – saying the affected bodies in the finance sector were now working round the clock to meet the deadline. Spaniards need to supply a DNI national identity card; foreign residents are required to show their residency card or passport.

OBLIGATION Banks have an obligation to contact customers. Clients who have not received any notification can assume no further action is necessary and their details are already with their bank. However, problems could arise if the contact details held by a bank are out of date and the client is out of reach before the deadline. Accounts could be frozen on 1st May. RTN was told by a banking source: “Obviously, when a client turns in their ID, the account will be activated again.” Banks attempted to extend the deadline but were refused by the government. Madrid noted: “banks had the obligation to collect and conserve copies of their clients’ ID since 1993. “The 2010 law expressly established that electronic records had to be kept to avoid documents getting misplaced. In 2010, they were given a five-year period to obtain that digitalised information.”

Pre-election giveaway promises

by

Keith Littlewood International Financial Adviser

CHANCELLOR GEORGE Osborne has said earlier this week that he intends to sell billions of pounds of government shares in Lloyds Banking Group to small investors if the Conservative Party wins the UK election. BRITAIN’S GOVERNMENT bailed out Lloyds with £20billion pounds of public money at the height of the financial crisis in 2009 buying 43 per cent of the bank and has since sold almost half of this back to large investors raising £9billion and leaving it with a 22 per cent holding. Writing in the Sunday Telegraph newspaper (19/04/2015), Osborne stated investors would be able to buy between £250 and £10,000 of Lloyds shares, with priority going to orders of up to £1,000. He added that shares will be sold at a 5 per cent discount to market value, and investors who hold their shares for a year would receive an extra 10 per cent, up to a value of £200. As with previous Lloyd’s sales, the shares will only be sold at a price of at least 73.6p each, the price paid during the bailout, and the proceeds will be used to reduce Britain’s national debt. Lloyds’ shares on the FTSE 100 index shares closed at 78.75p on Friday. This is following the announcement in the budget that the first £1,000 of interest from savings would be tax free from April 2016 (£500 for higher rate taxpayers) with banks

and building societies automatically paying out gross interest from April 2016 not deducting any tax. How this will affect the ex-pat living in Spain is unclear but at the moment if you are a fiscal resident you would have to pay the tax through your returns to the Hacienda as normal. At the moment the most tax efficient way of investing for the expat is through Spanish Compliant Bonds. 65+ Guaranteed Bonds offered in the UK offer a 4% gross return over 3 years or 2.8% gross over 1 year but most importantly the investment is 100% safe. These are still available for ex-pats up until May 14th If you would like a brochure or more information on either the 65+ Pensioner Bond, Spanish Compliant Bonds or just simply want a sit down and a face to face discussion about your savings then do not hesitate to email or phone me, often just a reassuring discussion is all that is needed for some people. Get back money paid buying ‘Off Plan’ in Spain. No win no fees. OVER THE last few years our firm has helped many families recover the money paid to developers for the purchase of new properties off plan. Some of these successful cases have been reported in the media. THE BANKS where promoters had their accounts, in which the buyers-consumers paid the money for buying properties off plan, are responsible for returning the money paid to the buyers, if: The property is not handed over, and If the developer - promoter has not provided the guarantees prescribed by law 57/68, to guarantee the money paid by buyers, i.e: when there is no bank guarantee or insurance policy, to cover the amounts paid on account. This is because, according to the Law 57/68, banks are responsible and should make sure that the guarantees (bank guarantee or insurance policy) are contracted when opening a special account for a developer, in order to receive money. There are many court precedents, in today’s article, we want to highlight the recent judgment of 16 January 2015 (No. of Appeal: 2336/2013), of the Spanish Supreme Court, which confirmed two important issues: 1. The bank who received the money in its special account, is responsible for returning the money to the buyer-consumer, if the developer does not hand over the property, and if the money paid is not guaranteed otherwise, even if the buyer does not have an individual bank guarantee. 2.-The limitation period ( deadline) to start a legal action against the bank is 15 years, as it is understood that the bank’s liability arises from breach of the Law 57/68, and is a result of contract relation, thus the contractual liability deadline applies. The judgment mentioned, from our High Court, is very important, and confirms the legal possibilities for all those who have paid some money buying a property off plan, that was never handed over, asking the bank where the promoter received the money to return the money paid, even if the developer has disappeared, is in bankruptcy, etc. To assist consumers in this situation, our firm offers to waive our own Law Society fees for clients in a “no win no fees” deal, meaning that only if the case is won would we charge our legal fees as per the Law Society, and if not, the only expense our office would need to charge would be a small provision to cover necessary unavoidable administrative expenses. If you lost money buying a property off plan recently or less than 15 years ago, we can help you, contact us on 966 426 185.

Alicante The Costa Blanca’s capital city

MOST PEOPLE think of Alicante as being just the place where you fly to when coming to the resort of Benidorm, but that’s really not the case. ALICANTE IS the regions capital city and the 2nd largest city in the Valencian community and it is a definite “must visit” whilst holidaying here on the Costa Blanca. Alicante is steeped in history and offers so much to see & do. The architecture in Alicante is simply stunning and the city has plenty of coffee-shop-lined squares, beautiful parks & interesting museums, not to mention the shops. The only thing you will struggle with, is time to get round and see them all. Whilst in Alicante, one thing that you cannot miss is a trip up to the Castel of Santa Barbara that stands high over the city on the Mount Benacantil. The origins of the castle date back as far as the 9th century when the region was under Muslim control, but through the years, the Castle has been occupied by both the English & French in its more colourful days and it was even used as a prison before being opened to the public back in 1963. The views from the castles turrets are breathtaking and it is only from here that you can really appreciate the true scale and beauty of the city of Alicante that lies below. Alicante has one of the most beautiful promenades in Spain, called the Explanada de España which is lined by palm trees and laid with six and a half million marble tiles that give waves of colour, running as far as the eye can see. The promenade runs the lengths of the port area which is filled with yachts of the rich and famous and even has a full scale replica of one of Spain´s most famous galleons, the” Santisima Trin idad” that fought in the battle of Trafalgar and was once the biggest and most heavily armed ship in the world. The replica of this great ship is used as a floating bar & restaurant and gives a relaxing, if not different environment, to enjoy a spot of lunch or your favourite tipple. If you like museums then Alicante has over twelve of them offering everything from archaeology to ocean racing, bull fighting, contemporary art and the famous fallas and their colourful statues. Prices of the museums range from free entrance to just a few Euros a head and they are definitely worth a look.

Mad Max! Mad Tom! and Mad Charlize!

So much of the movie business is built on the synthetic process of directors, writers and actors creating a celluloid dream sequence they believe will convert into great masses of us beating the door down to take a look see. Having said that, thankfully every now and then films gets made with a deep sense of passion for the art of movie making, and in so many cases, films made this way turn out to be hugely successful. I found an interview Charlize Theron gave to Esquire last week on this very subject, and I would suggest you wear protective gloves as you proceed as it sizzles a little. Charlize has just completed the shooting of Mad Max: Fury Road alongside Tom Hardy, and on her relationship filming with him on the back of a trailer for six and a half months she said “we f**kin’ went at it, yeah, on other days, he and George Miller, the director went at it, it was the isolation, the fact that we were stuck in a rig for the entire shoot, we shot a war movie on a moving truck!” Tom Hardy already has a reputation for being difficult to work with after the punch-up he had with Shia LaBeouf on the set of Lawless leaked out, about which he said “I’m not unreasonable, but if somebody hurts me I lash out in order to get them to stop!” yep, that’s pretty in your face Tom. However there are seeds of a happy ending to this story after Charlize admitted “I think good actors go all the way into the deep dark corners of what emotional truth is, and it’s that that makes it the magic that it is.” Not the best grammar in the world there Charlize, but we know what you mean honeybun! Steven Spielberg is to work for the first time with Disney filming Roald Dahl´s book The BFG (Big Friendly Giant). It’s about the BFG helping the fight against evil giants who are partial to eating children, not a comedy then. Due out next summer, Penelope Wilton, who won Best Actress last week for her role as Isobel Crawley in Downton Abbey will play the Queen of England in the movie.

Sue Perkins on why she quit Twitter “my timeline was full of blokes about me and Top Gear wishing me dead!” who said Social Media is fun? If you´re a Friends fan you´ll know that Rachael was no cook mixing shepherd’s pie with trifle, something Joey and Ross found highly amusing. Now US Twitter user Neil Killham has only gone and faithfully followed Rachael´s recipe saying “the idea has been on my mind for quite a while, I’ve been seriously considering it for at least five years.” You need to get out a bit more mate! One of the many fun features in the ten years of The Big Breakfast was zany aliens Zig and Zag, and now the two writers have penned 26 x 11-minute episodes for CBBC, due to air next spring. Described as ‘bright and funky’ the show will follow Zig & Zag as they make a new life for themselves in a suburb after crash landing on Earth … still zany then!

Robert de Niro at 71 is still in great shape, ideal for the role he has just accepted playing Enzo Ferrari, the man who revolutionised the world of motor sport. “It´s an honour to tell the life of an extraordinary man,” he said. The film will go into production soon, mostly in Italy, and the word is that Clint Eastwood is to be the director, heavy duty stuff indeed!

WITH A background in family and matrimonial mediation, Life Coach Sara Bell helps Readers with their daily worries. If you are having difficulties with relationships, family, work or any other aspect of your life, then help is at hand.

Can’t say no We recently moved to Spain. My brother and his young family have just come to stay with us for a two week holiday. He has now informed me that he is coming out for the whole of the six weeks school summer holidays, as he says it’s the best holiday he’s ever had. We are very easy-going and generous people, and like to have visitors stay, but my brother didn’t even offer to pay for a meal out, as a thank you. We don’t want to offend them, and are finding it difficult to say no. When relatives move to Spain, invitations to come and stay, are often extended. But your brother is taking advantage of you, and you must say something, otherwise the same thing may happen the next time school holidays come around. If you don’t want to say anything, you could try turning your spare room in to an office, or suggest that your brother rents a nearby Apartment, otherwise, your life will never be your own. Last week I was contacted by a very nice lady called Dorothy, in response to the story of the gentleman who had lost his wife recently. Touched by his letter, and herself affected by the loss of a loved one, Dorothy told me about a Bereavement Group called ‘Friends After Bereavement‘, of which she is a member. The group meet every Saturday at the Cartorce Bar in Benijofar between 2pm and 4pm. The

Group offers friendship, help and support to the bereaved. The 16 strong members, five of them men, also organise social activities and outings, and I am told they have just done some much needed fund raising for Cancer Research. New members are always welcome. Anyone interested in going along is very welcome. For more information, or just a chat phone Rosina on 966 713 778.

We feel we’re losing her My daughter is 21, and has a new boyfriend. Since she met him, she has not spent much time with the family. When it came to booking our usual family holiday with ourselves and her younger sister, she said she preferred to go away with her boyfriend this year. I can’t see why she can’t spend time with us as a family anymore. We also don’t approve of her boyfriend, and told her we wouldn‘t want him along. We all feel we are losing her. When children grow up and reach adulthood, the family unit inevitably changes. It is natural that once we meet a partner, we want to spend as much time with that person as possible. You are asking that your daughter attends family holidays, but her boyfriend is not welcome. In doing this, you are making her choose, and she will naturally lean toward her boyfriend, and her future. My advice is to welcome her boyfriend in to the family, don’t put any more objections or stipulations in her way, and in time, she should return to the fold. Write to Sara in confidence. A pseudonym will be used if you wish. Sara reads all letters and can give a personal reply. Email your question to agonyaunt@roundtownnews.com or Sara is available for private consultations, telephone 633 614 476.

Staying alive

THE MUSIC of the Bee Gees rocked the Costa Blanca last weekend in a special benefit concert that netted Teulada Moraira Lions Club 2,175 Euros. by Jack Troughton The Bootleg Bee Gees played to a packed Espai La Senieta in Moraira and produced hit by hit penned by Barry, Robin and Maurice – not only hits for the band but also written for artistes like Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers, Frankie Valli and others. Compered by Barry Moone and Susie Bond of Pure Gold 91FM Radio, the band stormed through its set and had the audience dancing in the aisles. The concert itself made 1,450€ for the club and a Grand Raffle run from the Lions Den charity shop – drawn on the night of the gig – added another 725€. The main prize, a handmade quilt made by Moraira Patch-workers was won by Krissy Jones, who has lived in Moraira for 11 years and is a volunteer at the charity shop. For details of all Teulada Moraira Lions Club fund raising events, join the mailing list by sending details to mailinglist.tmlions@gmail.com or follow the club on Facebook.

TALENTED DUO Dolce Divas were on top form on Saturday night winning hearts and minds with new show ‘Songs from Around the World’ at Moraira’s Espai La Senieta. Performing with guest musicians, soprano Claire Harkness-Post and pianist Kirsty Glen took music from around the world to present an evening of versatile entertainment – featuring songs in at least eight languages. And while the concert was a tribute to the hard work, creativity and commitment of everyone performing on stage, it was also a success for charity One Step Malawi, 1,044€ being donated to help projects in the African country.

Printer for an iPad air

Email auntyvirus@roundtownnews.com

HI AUNTY: Can you advise me as to what wifi printer I can use with the Ipad air. I do not have another computer or lap top. The cheapest one that I have found is a HP DJ 2540 but there seems some confusion as to whether I need a laptop to register initially. Regards, Trevor Aunty says: Most “wireless” printers can be set up without a PC or laptop. But most do rely on WPS - to allow quick connection between the printer and router - and a quick look at the printers manual (on the HP website) confirms this. So check first that your router has a WPS button to allow the connection to be made. And perhaps just to make sure, send HP an email asking them to confirm if it can be set up without a PC or laptop... Response: Thanks for the info, really appreciate it.

Help with laptop

DEAR AUNTY: I wonder if you could help me with my laptop? For the last few days I’ve been getting a message: ‘machineld creator.app.error.report contents.c/documents/admin/locals’. It also mentions ‘avast/avquidx.dll’? I would appreciate your help in this matter. Many thanks - Noel. Aunty says: My investigations suggest the error message from ‘machine id creator’ actually comes from AVG - another anti-virus program. It would suggest that you have the remnants of a previously installed AVG, and this is conflicting with your Avast (hence the ‘avast/avquidx.dll’). So your previous AVG has not been fully uninstalled, or you still have part of that installation, like AVG toolbar, still installed. And the two anti-virus programs are conflicting, hence the error message. So I think you would need to clean up whichever program you wish to use, and make sure the other is not installed, or has any parts left.

Security alert not working DEAR AUNTY: I am using Windows Vista with a paid AVG Internet Security and its antivirus package. On the right hand taskbar below, a window kept popping up saying, ‘Windows Security Alerts has been turned off’. When I checked the Windows Security Essential page, indeed the security alert had turned off. I clicked ‘Turn On’’security alert but it won’t work. My concern is, do you think AVG Internet Security had turned it off while installing the software? If not how do I turn it on again? I have asked online help but Microsoft told me they are monitoring... Please help, Aunty. Aunty says: It may simply be a reporting issue between AVG and the Windows Security system. It is known that the Windows Security system does not always work with some Antivirus programs, and although Windows says there is no Antivirus installed, the Antivirus can be installed and working properly. As long as AVG says it is working and active, then it should not be a problem. But if you want to, you can always uninstall and

Last weekend for Tapas Route

JALON VALLEY HELP is gearing up for one of the most important dates on the charity’s calendar, the annual fund raising fair on Sunday 17th May.

Pirates from 2013’s Caribbean flavoured fair

by Jack Troughton This year’s theme is the Wild West and so anyone heading to the Jalon for a fun family day out can look forward to meeting cowboys, ‘red Indians’, saloon girls, a sheriff or two – and naturally loads to eat and drink. The ever popular May Fayre takes place on the ‘rastro’ car park in Jalon between 10am and 2pm and there will be herds of stalls selling a multitude of goodies including crafts and cards, bric-a-brac, plants, books, jams and pickles, and cakes. Radio station Total FM will be

broadcasting live and HELP will again welcome the Poco Loco Steel Band. In addition, a fitting display of line dancing will be given by the U3A Jalon Valley Stompers. Kids can enjoy a pony ride, while parents will be challenged to guess the weight of the cake, and to buy raffle tickets. Stalls are still available and there is a prize for the best decorated, anyone interested can download information and the booking form from www.jalonvalleyhelp.com – queries can be answered by calling

the two numbers or by email to jvevents@hotmail.com Profits from this enjoyable event as always go into HELP’s Charity Fund which supports the ‘drop in’ and community centre Casa de Animo in Alcalali, and to the Santolina Suite at the Ferris Hospital in Fontilles. The fund also helps cover the costs of storing, maintaining and replacing the charity’s ‘on loan’ medical equipment, and dealing with requests for help – anyone needing support should ring 659 624 643.

spanish

Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin

Direct Object Pronouns – use of “le” and “les” AT PRESENT we are looking at an area of Spanish language which is basic, but at the same time rather fiddly. It is one of those areas where we really do have to accept certain things without necessarily understanding them fully and one where it takes a while to build up the whole picture. So far we have explained in some detail exactly what a direct object pronoun is, what its equivalent is in English and how it is used in most cases in Spanish. Last week I skirted around a particular aspect, which is what happens to the direct object pronoun in the third person, and also what happens when the object is “usted” or “ustedes” (the formal “you” which uses the same forms as the third person). We have established that the usual direct object pronoun in the third person is “lo” for masculine and “la” for feminine, and this is technically true when referring to people as well as for things. However, in many forms of spoken Spanish there is a tendency to replace “lo” with “le”, particularly when referring to people. (The word “le” exists correctly as something else we’re not learning yet). Exactly the same phenomenon occurs in the third person plural, which sometimes substitutes “los” for “les” when referring to people rather than things. This can be very confusing when we learn that “lo” is correct, and then see that sometimes it changes to “le” for no apparent reason. Even more confusing is when teachers and books insist that “lo” is the only possibility but then you discover that the Spanish themselves use the two words apparently interchangeably. Also, believe me, if you ask your average Spanish person to explain why they’ve used the word “le” instead of “lo” in a particular sentence, they won’t be able to. The simplest explanation is that although it is technically incorrect to use

“le” as a direct object pronoun, the use has become so common, particularly in certain parts of the country, that it is now generally regarded as acceptable. If you think that is horrible, just be aware that the same thing happens in English as well, and is all part of the evolution of languages. Certain things creep into speech which the purists jump up and down about because they are incorrect, but in the end they become so common that everyone accepts them and forgets they were wrong in the first place. (Just two examples: the tendency nowadays to say “if I was you” instead of “if I were you” and “If I would have known” instead of “if I had known). You may think I’m making a lot of fuss about nothing, particularly if you didn’t know there was a problem in the first place, but in fact as we move on and learn more of these little words, they can become a bit of a nightmare if you don’t realize these basic truths, so the best thing is to store the information in your mind for future recall. You can put it in that folder labeled “things Jane says will be important later on”. Here’s a summary which therefore needs to be tacked onto the bottom of the list of direct object pronouns in last week’s article. *le: him / you (m. usted) - les: them (people) / you (m. ustedes) (*when 3rd person masculine refers to people, it is very common in European Spanish to use le/les instead of lo/los) This oddity only applies to the masculine form. The feminine remains “la” and “las” for people and things when they are direct objects. What we haven’t mentioned yet are “indirect object pronouns” (of which “le” and “les” are actually examples), but don’t worry, we’re not going to do that for a while! Next week we will go back to real examples of Spanish sentences to put all this into place. Bet you can’t wait!

In the evening two very popular singers are doing a gig free of charge, the lovely Debbie Slater and Showaddywaddy’s lead singer Martin Kay. During the day, Jukes are having a BBQ and in the evening, The Phoenix are having a hog roast. All this is in aid of the charity Alimentos Solidarios, a soup kitchen that helps feed over 300 needy people with donations from supermarkets, other organisations, and, of course, good old Joe Public. Have YOU had your Free hearing check up with GAES yet? If not, why not call your nearest clinic today? In order to raise awareness about the importance of detecting hearing problems, GAES Hearing Centres are offering readers a hearing check up absolutely free, at any of their GAES centres. Regular Hearing check ups offer the best protection to maintain hearing and should be taken as often as visual or dental examinations. From age 55, yearly check ups are recommended. Recently we have asked one of GAES hearing specialists, Vanessa, (hearing specialist in the Torrevieja clinic of GAES, Spain’s leading Hearing Specialists) to explain the clinic’s hearing examination offered to readers. Hi Vanessa, could you let our readers know where your clinic is located in Torrevieja, and where do your clients usually live? Of course. The clinic is located in Calle Ramon Gallud, no 52, near the Ayuntamiento de Torevieja (Town Hall). We have regular english clients from as far as San Fulgencio-la Marina, Guardamar, Orihuela Costa y and all the close towns right up to Caregena. How long have you worked for Gaes? I have been working in GAES since 2003, as a qualified professional specialist in Audiology and Audio Protethis. Do all the medical staff speak english at case CLINICS? Yes, absolutely. We have very many english patients, so english is a must in GAES clinics, especially so here in Torrevieja.

Who should be coming to the clinic for a check up? In reality, anybody older than 16 could take a hearing examination. Particularly anyone who feels that they may have had some hearing loss, or who are older, or simply would like to check that everything is still optimum. What is the normal process in a hearing revision at your clinic? Is there any obligation of further treatment? Firstly we would inspect the auditive canal to check there is no blockage, and if the ear is found to be clear, then there is a complete and thorough audio test to know the grade of hearing. If there is found to be hearing loss, we fully explain what help is suitable and recommended to regain a good level of hearing. The appointment lasts approximately one hour. There is no obligation of further treatment. How much does the revision cost (is it free?) It is completely free Are there new technologies that Gaes uses in your clinic, in both treatment and diagnosis? Of Course! As market leaders, we have to stay ahead using the latest technology. Every year we incorporate the latest advances and products to achieve the best results in diagnosis and treatment. There are also aesthetic advances that are just as important. Thanks Vanessa. Your welcome. We look forward to hearing from readers soon.

Don’t wait, book your free hearing check up today at YOUR local Gaes hearing clinic. See their advert every week on Page 13 in your RTN.

Discover how to get in the best shape of your life, even if you think you are too old! WE ALL know that as we age it is normal for our bodies to deteriorate. Pain, joint problems, backache, lack of flexibility, are all accepted as normal consequences of aging. By Natalia PH Jeffrey van Keeken, Mylogenics trainer, challenges this. “Your body can function well, no matter how old you are”, he says. Jeffrey focuses on working with people over the age of 60 and helps them live active, productive and independent lives. “I will work with you to show you what your body is capable of, even if you have already given up on flexibility and pain free living”. His clients swear by his results, so I decided to put his promise to the test. The test subject – my husband, just turned 50, and during his entire adult life, never able to reach the floor with his fingers. In fact he had only been able to bend as far as his knees. Jeffrey certainly had his work cut out for him! I witnessed the entire process and, I must admit, even though I understand the

principles of Mylogenics training, I was still stunned by the result. As the minutes went by, my husband kept bending lower and lower and, by the time the session had finished, he could bend as far as 2 cm off the floor! If these are the results you can achieve after only one training session, just imagine the possibilities with regular training! Mylogenics is a modality created by two physiotherapists who worked for the Dutch Marine Corps. It focuses on performance enhancement, prevention and injury treatment. Training is custom made to your body’s circumstances and no matter what your age, Jeffrey will adjust the program to get you results. Jeffrey offers 100% risk-free guarantee! Emotional Support for Teenagers

READERS MAY have heard of the work of the Samaritans but may not know that the Samaritans also operate a support service across the whole of Spain and can support youngsters at school, and not just adults who may need their help. The Samaritans receive many enquiries from people of all ages, from younger teenagers to those well into their old age, with a range of different problems. Contrary to popular belief, only 1% of callers are those with suicidal feelings. Increasing numbers of younger people are emailing or phoning the helpline about a range of issues which affect them, and are offered a confidential support service. The Samaritans’ main aim is to listen to callers in a non-judgemental and supportive way. Posters and leaflets have been sent to over 50 schools who are members of the Association of British Schools in Spain to raise awareness among younger people that Samarians in Spain can help them deal with all sorts of issues. If you are a teenage reader yourself, or have youngsters in your circle of family and friends, you can find out more by visiting the webpage www.samaritansinspain.comor follow Samaritans in Spain on Facebook. Horoscopes Governed by the close timing of Ceres and the Sun in Taurus, Saturn does much to help make you think that a resolution recently is nothing more than a compromise. In hindsight you would have rather have heard the truth from the start, but transparency and dedication has allowed you to make a clean breast of things so that will have to do for now. Pluto closely examines the frivolity of an ebullient Venus as love finally seems to be on the cards. You have had cold feet, and the indecisive energies from this have worked against you and not for you, this time around. There comes a time to stop weighing up the pro’s and the con’s and just to get on with this better relationship on the level you aspire to. The implications of now bring you to start to see things in a far different light. For some time you were hedging your bets and surviving in fear and false hope, and this is not the way forward, nor could it ever be. Mighty Uranus has some further work to do with you, including a plan, that if implemented really could make everyone happy. Somebody just isn’t listening to what you have to say right now and this echoes around in much you are currently involved in. There are some surprises this week that help you to see what could be, rather then your current defensive stance that does you no favours whatsoever. Believe and trust in yourself above all and bring it all on! Three actions of the Sun affect you greatly in the week ahead. The first action with Saturn is revealing and should excite you. Ceres calls time, midweek, on the ending of a project that wasn’t going anywhere; and finally Neptune intervenes to establish solvency and balance in a situation that veers out of control. A busy, active and lively week! It would seem that someone you thought was a friend is actually working against you in some way. Since there can be no rhyme or reason for this you have to look at circumstance when your natural reaction is to apportion blame yourself. Things have been intense but you simply cannot be held responsible for the selfishness of others. Balance is your comfort zone, and in the current course astrological harmony should be yours. A recent offer needs to be seriously thought through before you even start to consider it, especially as it doesn’t immediately grab you. Mercury dallies with Mars and this brings a rash of indecisive changes you may very well live to regret in time to come. Things really seem to be going your way and you are right there back on track for a change. The tried and tested routes are the simplest, and just for a change you seem to be thinking of yourself. This isn’t selfish in any way whatsoever, but it is self assuring, and just what you need to back you all the way as you now happily ring the changes. You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make him drink. It seems very much that your heartfelt energies are reaching out to those who need your tender love and care right now. Home in on a family issue and nip something nicely in the bud before somebody makes a mountain over a molehill and the cart is truly upset. The Moon’s phase currently rewards your opposing sign of Cancer, and leaves you thinking that things seem to be happening in reverse right now. We are told that sometimes things have to get worse before they get better, but when? Eliminate fairly and squarely, because this is a time for action and not the time to just sit and wait it out. Examine more closely the offer that is on the table. In many ways you have grown out of your current position and it may very well be the time to start looking at pastures new with a view to moving on. Venus puts creative passion into a sextile with Uranus, and this highlights the fact there is something very much better out there for you. Neptune basks in the Sun this week and it is time for some much needed and much deserved rest and relaxation. This week is all about you, and your focus should be the inner you, where there is some exploration necessary, and you can have fun doing so. Not only will you like what you see but it will have a dynamic impact to all that you do do.

WE ARE all Spirit, living in a body and the body ages, withers and dies. That is the due process of life and it does of course have its variations, its intrigues and its quirks. The soul of each body survives the transition to the Spirit World and what happens next is really up to us, just as with life there are choices to make, things to do, communication to master. We can look back at our Earthly life and spot where we went wrong. Whenever the subject of past wrongs rears its head there comes a reason as to why we acted in the way that we did and where it got us and what happened, and it is now too late to make changes that are anchored and rooted in the past. We cannot re write the past, and we are substantially living in the present which cannot change, it is only the future that can and will embrace any changes that we decide to make. Change just for change sake is pointless and hubris, but when we take on the energies that are brimming within us, then change can play the most important part in ringing in what needs to be. Surprises often test us and allow us to adapt to the needs of a busy life amidst the backdrop of true innovation, invention and intention. Each year brings changes that show us a new impetus, just as it is good to look back and see natural progress being made; making the difference we can, and learning, always for the future. If you can spend time to think of others, no matter what your needs may be, you will be rewarded for your actions in the clarity and transparency of doing a job well. If we have problems, and we do, then it isn’t too hard to perceive that there are some rather worse off than we are. Cold comfort? I am often told that we are all in the same boat, but this is currently blatantly untrue in a differing World, and it is for sure

Kenny‛s Postbag

that we would not wish to open a can of worms as we weave our way through the fabric of our lives. The rich tapestry of good and bad is interwoven and punctuated by our commitment and dedication and all that we do is fueled by love, and always will be. I see so many people these days who have almost given up, become complacent or falsely appear content though they quite clearly are not. Here Spirit can make one hell of a difference. You cannot be alone when you are in the arms of an all embracing Spiritual Energy. Friends, Loved ones, Family may come and go, but we all radiate energy from the depths of our spirituality. Loving ourselves is compulsory, but for some the love has gone and for a few it is hard to claw back that which we deserve but maybe cannot handle for various reasons. A dear client of mine has had to stand back and see her beloved partner disappear from her life with a premature Senility. In fact her husband no longer knows who she is and stares vacantly at her whenever they meet. She has been told that he will never ever change and there is not even a glimmer of hope. Needing 24 hour nursing and care, husband is fortunately getting all of the attention that he needs with dedicated professionals in wonderful surroundings. Mindful of her vows and though still married, my client was racked with guilt that she had taken on a boyfriend. She felt that she was turning her back on her husband, but she is needy and has such a lot of living ahead of her. I told her that Spirit had intervened to bring this new partner into her life, because if something hadn’t happened then she too would have closed the doors to her heart, and there was still so much loving in there. Frightened to tell her daughter what was happening, the response was classic. Daughter and Mother cried tears of joy, sad to lose such a wonderful man from their lives, as father and husband, but happy to have the blessing of love that unites them in wanting the very best for each other. Love never dies, but only the soul survives, so make it a happy one, whatever, if you can?

Email your letters to me at: kennycorris@roundtownnews.com

KENNY I have tried asking for what I deserve, and yet nothing now seems to be going right for me, and I am beginning to think that it never will. What do you do when all seems to be failing around you? Luz S.G. Luz, now there is a lovely name, the bringer of light to the darkness of the World! You are beginning to lose hope and this will shake the very foundation of your belief and disconnect you from the pure magic that Spirit can bring. When things go wrong, and they do, then that is the time to bolster your faith and not to give in. Hopefully for you there will be no going back, but, above all this is not a time to look back, it is a time to be on track, however hard things are. I use my faith to always try to make the difference I need!

The circus comes to town THE EXCITING story of cavalryman Philip Astley – the father of the modern circus – will be told to members of U3A Vall del Pop at the general meeting on Thursday 7th May. Mike by Jack Troughton

Historian and author Mike Rendell, who has written a book about Astley’s shows and its daring equestrian acts as he became a real showman of the 1760s, is the guest speaker at the meeting in Murla Polivalent. Astley learned his trade while serving in the British Army during the Seven Years war and went on to open no less than 19 circus premises throughout Britain and Europe – trained animals did not enter the circus story until the middle of the next century and these first shows were based on highly skilled and trained performers.

There was an Englishman, a Scotsman and a Welshman entered this golf competition. THEN THEY were followed by a Norwegian, a Frenchman and a German.

By Tony Myles NO IT’S not the start of a joke it is the typical line-up for the Costa Blanca International Cup which this year is heading south to the Roda Golf Resort. Last year it was fully booked with competitors playing on both Oliva Nova and La Sella. This year Campbell is taking it further south as one

further step in extending the spread of locations within his portfolio. In the Northern Costa Blanca Campbell is the default choice for golfers wishing to play on any of the local courses from Alicante to Valencia and these are the courses where the majority of Campbell’s competitions are held. Now, with the business growing in all areas Campbell is keen to offer the same high standard of service into the Southern Costa Blanca and beyond. We discussed this recently on Bay Radio and this is what he had to say “The golfing community in Spain are among the most cosmopolitan anywhere in the world and last year this was clearly demonstrated by the hugely successful Costa Blanca International Cup. So this year, as part of our strategy to deliver more and more services into other parts of Spain, we are combining with the new Roda Golf Resort to encourage more southern based golfers and societies to come along and join us. As you can tell by the title, we are also extending invitations into many other European

areas. It is a great fun event scheduled for two days in mid-June when the weather will be perfect. There are both pairs and singles competitions and we have created a great package for those who wish to stay overnight.” So the call is out to golfers from Valencia to Malaga to come along and join in. All the details are on the web site - www.clgolf.es. Or send your enquiry to competitions@clgolf.es

Tony M - How are we getting on with the new website? Campbell - Looking good. Hopefully up and ready for launch in a matter of weeks. Tony M - Great, and will it have the same address? Campbell - Oh yes just more content and a clearer presentation. Tony M - That reminds me of www.conjunctivitis.com Campbell - Why? Tony M - That was a site for sore eyes!

The Rules Regarding A–Frames IF YOU have a motorhome and you want to bring your car to Spain, you have to be aware that A-Frames are forbidden in Spain, so you will need a trailer to carry your car. The law, which legislates in this matter, is the “Reglamento General de Circulación”, and applies to all vehicles that are in Spain. The same rule applies whether you are a resident or on holiday in Spain with a motorhome with a foreign number plate. Often, motorhomes carry auxiliary vehicles, usually bicycles, a moped or small motorcycle. This practice is authorized provided an approved bicycle rack or a platform for this purpose is used and, when projecting out from the usual characteristics of the motorhome, the following requirements as provided in Article 15 of the Reglamento General de Circulación are met. After frequent questions regarding the possibility of a motorhome towing a car, this possibility is prohibited in Article 9.3 of the Reglamento General de Vehículos which prohibits the movement of a motor vehicle towing another, unless there is an immediate risk of damage or injury and it cannot be dragged by another vehicle specifically designed for that purpose, in which case it is allowed only to the nearest place where it will not hinder traffic movement and provided that it is not on a motorway. Not withstanding the points already mentioned, a combination of vehicles consisting of a motor and a trailer or semi-trailer on which another vehicle can be transported is permitted if the set qualifies for driving on public roads and is approved to Directives 70/156/CEE and 94/20/CEE and they do not exceed the maximum length allowed for these sets which is 18.75 meters and 16.50 meters in the case of a semi-trailer.
