Calpe goes to the wire

Mayor Sanchez (centre) and colleagues

by Jack Troughton NEGOTIATIONS TO form a new government team in Calpe went almost to the deadline as Mayor Cesar Sanchez met with other political parties to find an ally. The wheeling and dealing continued until Friday night – allowing the new team to be sworn in at the town hall on Saturday – a ceremony being repeated at local authority buildings across the region following the local elections last month. The mayor finally agreed terms with APPC – the Alternative Partido Popular of Calp – and its two elected councillors will join the nine Partido Popular members to give a working majority. Tensions had been running high in the Marina Alta town; there was even

talk of the five opposition forming a group to take charge – or the PP forming a minority government. Councillor Carole Saunders, confirmed that no agreement was reached until late on Friday night. “There was a lot of talk about the five other parties pacting together against the PP but both Compromis and Podemos did not want to be part of that alliance,” she said. “We could have formed a government with just nine councillors because we enjoyed the largest vote but then there would always be a problem of everything we tried to do being blocked or facing a vote of no confidence.” She said the mayor had met with every

the party in Calpe in a bid to find a partner. “Compromis said they would not be aggressive in opposition but they did not want to be part of a pact – I think because of political differences at a national level.” And she said a proposal was put to the APPC and its committee agreed to be part of the new town hall team. Mrs Saunders said the main priority of the new government would be increasing employment prospects in Calpe, creating a new business park, and increasing the number of visitors to the town as tourism was a major driver of the economy. Later, Mayor Sanchez said of his team> “It is cohesive, strong and optimistic to undertake the future projects that Calpe deserves.”

Beauty spot put first

THREE TOWN halls have joined forces to forge a strategy to protect the Montgo Natural Park, a beauty spot heralded as one of the Costa Blanca’s most valuable assets. Javea, Denia, and Jesus Pobre are together joining up plans to safeguard the mountain and woodland – devastated by a huge forest fire last year. The first meeting was hosted by Javea Town Hall and the mayors of the three communities Jose Chulvi, Vincent Grimalt, and Javier Scotto, were present with council colleagues and representatives of the police, fire service and civil protection. It was agreed that a common strategy was needed between the local authorities because “neither the fires nor the Montgo have borders” rather than duplicate measures and resources across the administrations. And as well as focussing on prevention of fires, the strategy will also aim at insuring a fast and effective response in another emergency. The meeting also pledged to involve the Valencian government to seek greater awareness of the needs of the natural park, especially in gaining greater investment in fire prevention, including employment programmes to clear areas of forest. Further, the town halls will step up vigilance. Regularly patrolling the park to have greater control over the prohibition on burning, the clearing of rubbish left tipped in the area and as a deterrent to arson. The meeting also agreed to divide the park into sections for more effective vigilance of the area, to service fire hydrants, and to create more water tanks to ‘refuel’ helicopters used in fire fighting. Residents of the Montgo also have to be protected. The strategy will focus on educating people about what to do in an emergency and warn of the dangers of negligence – many fires are caused by barbeques, agricultural burning and the fashionable ‘wish candles’.

Man dies in restaurant after being served detergent A 50 year old man died at the weekend near Vinaros in the Valencian region after being given dishwasher detergent instead of wine.

Vinaros Hospital

by Jeanette Rice ANDRES LORENTE visited a local cafe on Sunday afternoon and ordered a glass of white wine. When he started drinking it became very apparent that something was seriously wrong as the liquid began to burn his windpipe, throat and stomach. The industrial cleaner had been poured into an empty wine bottle and placed in the fridge. The liquid which is colourless and odourless was then mistaken, by the waiter, as being white wine and served to Mr Lorente. The divorced father of two was rushed to Vinaros hospital by ambulance as his condition worsened and he later died. The local Guardia Civil attended the scene and immediately arrested the bar owner on suspicion of manslaughter but he was later released on bail following questioning. The bar was closed after the incident and all evidence was taken away for analysis. However a source close to the investigation said “everything seems to be pointing towards a tragic accident caused by negligence”. It is not know yet why the detergent had been poured into the empty wine bottle.

British motocross rider dies during rally

MOTOCROSS LEGEND, Timothy Swinscoe, was killed in a crash during the Supermotard rally in Algemesí, Valencia on Sunday morning. The British rider, aged 54, who had been involved in the sport for many years and lived in the region lost control of his bike and hit a tree at high speed. Whilst emergency services attended to Mr Swinscoe, who was transferred to La Ribera hospital, his injuries were such that they were unable to save him. The accident, which took place at approximately 10 am on Sunday, occurred during the pre-race demonstrations and it is believed Mr Swinscoe brushed another rider before loosing control. Officials suspended the scheduled race and police then immediately began their investigation.

Traffic light red for 28 years OFFICIALS IN Dresden, Germany, said a traffic light that has been red for the past 28 years will remain red for the foreseeable future due to regulations. by Patricia Thompson OFFICIALS IN Dresden, Germany, said a traffic light that has been red for the past 28 years will remain red for the foreseeable future due to regulations. The light, where Ziegelstrasse meets three other streets, has been red since 1987 and allows motorists to turn right after stopping, but any motorists hoping to go straight on to Gerokstrasse will almost definitely run out of fuel before they get a green light. The traffic light has never lit up yellow or green, despite annual maintenance costs for the intersection including replacement green

and yellow bulbs for the signal. Dresden officials said “Because a green light means ‘transport is free to go’ all other lights in conflict to this one must show red. That includes the light on Ziegelstrasse. Because on Ziegelstrasse one is only allowed to turn right, we can do without using the traffic signal’s green light.” The representative said the same job could not be fulfilled by a stop sign because “stop signs do not correspond to traffic light systems and do not fulfill the same set of regulations.”

Woman arrested in Gibraltar for drug smuggling

THE 29 year old woman aroused suspicions with her behaviour when crossing the border and HM Customs Officers decided to interview her further, requesting that she be medically examined. The detainee refused and was then kept in custody until a senior customs officer could authorise her detention under the provisions of the Imports and Exports Act. In the early hours of Wednesday morning, the 29 year old woman expelled a plastic wrapper which contained approximately two grams of cocaine and heroin along with a smaller amount of cannabis resin. The local woman has now been released on bail and will charged at a later date.

THE ROMANTIC lure of a ride on a Harley Davidson motorbike put fund raising into overdrive and last Sunday the ‘Biker Babes’ handed over a cheque for 13,000€ to help kids in need. The presentation to Make A Smile – a charity supporting children cared for by EMAUS across the Costa Blanca – came after the lucky 19 were treated to the ‘ride out’ hosted by the Costa Blanca Espana Harley Davidson biker Group. Around 600 bikes – largely the classic Harley Davidson’s from across Spain and Europe but also including Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha and other machines – formed a long and noisy motorcade, delighting spectators along Benidorm’s Levante Beach and Albir’s promenade. It was the biker groups’ annual Fun Day in Eucalyptus Park in Albir and as well as bike owners, the event was packed with people enjoying the entertainment and refreshments. After collecting a motorcycle-shaped cheque, presented “with love”, Tony and Lucy Grande of Make A Smile thanked everyone for their ongoing support. EMAUS is currently in voluntary receivership, but Tony said the work went on supporting the youngsters and encouraged people to keep giving. He thanked the biker babes and the Harley group for their ongoing help and support “making a difference to the lives of children”. He added: “This money will help support the children throughout the summer months, local Spanish children

buy buying them fresh food.” BEER And Peter Emmett, spokesman for the Harley club, said the event had been another success. “The whole thing was brilliant. The park was much busier than in previous years – this year we shipped three times the amount of beer than we sold last year. “The biker babes have every reason to feel proud of themselves. They raised twice the amount of money than two years ago – they have done the EMAUs kids proud.” He said ‘Queen Biker Babe’ Jody Kirby, had won the title by raising the most sponsorship but had been unable to make the ride out. Sue Nutbrown was ‘runner up’ in the fund raising, and was presented with a tiara, while Gina Marks, of GM Promotions, was both sponsor and biker babe. And Peter thanked RTN for its part in publicity the group’s charity effort. “The paper was a sponsor this year and we are grateful for all its help – the publicity has helped us recruit new members – we are now 112 strong, at the start of the year it was 80 bikers.” Two years ago Debbie Gibbons was a biker babe and is now a fully paid up member of the biker group, riding a Harley Davidson Sportster 883 she had named ‘The Black Pearl.” She said she first caught the biking bug as a teenager and was “re-infested” when she rode on the back of a

Alan Fox and RTN’s Jack Troughton ride through Benidorm

Harley two years ago. “I heard about the biker babe thing, took part, and then got a Yamaha. For a time the group – it is a Harley Davidson group – let me ride with them as their ‘mascot’ or ‘pet’,” she said. “Eventually last year I managed to save enough money and got my own Harley and now I am fully fledged member of the group and one of their official photographers.” RIDE On Sunday, Debbie had Niamh – biker babe and lead singer with popular band Gatecrash – on board for the ride. “It was great fun – we squealed, laughed, tooted and waved all the way round. “We clapped people’s hands along the beach front and revved the engine until the exhausts almost dropped off. It was absolutely wicked.” And, naturally, RTN went along for the ride to bring despatches from the front. Once again your correspondent was pillion passenger with Alan Fox up front, actually driving the beast. The annual Christmas Toy Run is great fun – everyone dressed up as Santa and carrying presents for children – but this was simply awesome because of the sheer size of the event. There were bikes everywhere. The sound of the engines alerts people to the oncoming column of machinery and they are stunned by a column of bikes that seemed to stretch forever. Police from three municipalities form an escort and take the motorcade through red lights – a very childish thrill in itself – and hold back traffic at roundabouts and junctions. And unlike the leathers needed in December, this ride out was in tshirts. The heat from the engines and smell of the petrol fumes adding to the atmosphere. It was a truly unforgettable experience.

RTN reader Mike Conway took pictures of the stranded vessel after it drifted into the shore despite the efforts of people on shore to prevent it grounding. On Wednesday, a large crane was needed to lift the ship-wrecked vessel to safety. It was confirmed that none of its fuel load had leaked.

Storms cause havoc on the Costa Blanca by Jeanette Rice

UP AND down the coast of the Costa Blanca extreme weather reeked havoc with lightning strikes, fires and heavy rainfall. The inland areas were not exempt from the forces of nature and even Madrid suffered flooding, with vehicles being pictured floating down the streets. Lightning struck in Devesa del Saler, south of Valencia on Tuesday evening, causing a fire, which was luckily extinguished quickly, and reports quickly came in from around the region of similar events. During the early hours of Tuesday morning La Nucia, Benidorm and surrounding areas experienced explosive sounding thunder, rapidly, followed by huge bolts of lightning as residents feared for possible fires caused by the

extreme storm. In Gandia, residents reported hailstones the size of marbles followed by heavy rainfall with rivers forming on the streets and debris floating past their properties. The whole of Spain experienced the severe storms as they travelled through the country, with many other European cities reporting similar flooding and disruption. In Germany the heavy thunderstorms saw six young people injured when their tent was struck by lightning as they were trying to stop it blowing away. Reports came in from around the Valencian community including a tornado seen in Buñol, Valencia on Monday afternoon. Many social media sites experienced higher levels of activity as weather reports came flocking in from residents

Burglar jailed after being caught on BBC presenter’s garden foxcam

NIGEL BATTON, 43 has been jailed for burglary after he was filmed on a camera installed in a neighboring property to film urban wildlife. Around 3.46am, the camera installed to film urban wildlife by BBC Springwatch host Simon King picked up an image of a man climbing over a garden fence. The man then looked through the slat blinds of a studio office and tried to open the door before walking off across the garden. Police released a CCTV image of the man and a number of people called to identify Batton. Batton, from Lewisham, South East London, was jailed for four-and-a-half years for burglary and attempted burglary.

around the region who were posting their personal experiences. Some of the reports compared the storms to that of a “gota fria” although those familiar with the local climate will know that these predominantly occur in the autumn months when the sea temperature is still high but the upper air temperature suddenly drops. The warm air, saturated with water vapour rises and cools too quickly when meeting the upper cooler air. As reported in RTN a couple of weeks ago, the Orxeta reservoir was in desperate need of such rainfall but much more is needed to see the levels rise to any significant amount, and so for now most fire planes will continue to take their water from local pools around the area.

Red faces all round as boys in blue have a smashing time! POLICE CHIEFS in Dyfed-Powys in Wales are puzzling over how two police cars crashed head-on into one another, with no other cars around. The marked police Vauxhall van and the Ford Kuga patrol car were left facing each other after the crash which blocked the road at Penpont, near Brecon, mid-Wales. Two officers sustained minor injuries and the vehicles also demolished a Victorian post box which had been in use for 120 years. One motorist who arrived on the scene minutes afterwards said: ‘I can’t understand how it happened. It was a clear day on a straight stretch of road. The vehicles hit each other head-on and it caused a lot of damage. It was fortunate no-one was killed, but the van must have been travelling at some speed because it was very badly damaged and looked like a write-off.’ A police spokeswoman said ‘The circumstances are being investigated and both vehicles are non-operational.’

Renfe seeks more workers for the first time in four years

THE PUBLIC Spanish state owned railway company, Renfe, has announced plans to take on 156 new staff. The announcement has been received well by the unions that represent the workers of the company, who have constantly complained that there is a severe lack of staffing, and although more than 156 new staff are needed they felt it was a step in the right direction. Of the 156 new positions 81 will be engine drivers with the other 75 positions being filled with vacancies in the workshops, commercial department, technical team and assistant management. The recruitment will take part in two phases, the first will seek to employ most of the non-driving staff, with selection processes being carried out in July. A second phase will then take place in Autumn. The 81 driver vacancies will mostly come from candidates that are on a reserve list. This list was complied last year when 500 workers were asked to take voluntary redundancy. Currently employing 14,232 staff Renfe has seen a continual increase in the number of passengers using the high speed train service, AVE. Combined with this the network has seen new routes with plans for further expansion in the near future, which have all added to the increased pressure that the current staff have complained about. With the average age of the Renfe employee being 51 years old, and 90% of them being male the public owned company is hoping to attract applications from the younger population as well appealing to more women.

Whale way station FOUR MIGRATING fin whales were spotted off the coast of Denia last Friday, the giant mammals triggering excitement amongst nature lovers.

Whales off Denia

by Jack Troughton AN ENDANGERED species, the leviathans are also known as razorbacks after the distinct ridge running down their backs, and they can grow to 27 metres long and weigh up to 74 tons. Once labelled the ‘greyhounds of the sea’ because of their long slender and streamlined bodies, a yacht crew first spotted a pair of the whales of Les Rotes heading south and radioed their position. A Coastguard vessel from Denia was patrolling the marine nature reserve of Cap de Sant Antoni and confirmed the sighting as well as spotting another two fin whales around half a mile away. The Coastguard and a number of sports boats were able to sail with the mammals – Balaenoptera physalus - for about an hour before they headed for the deep. MAMMAL Every year sightings of the giant whale,

the second largest mammal in the world after the blue whale – are becoming more frequent. Boat crews and people walking on the coast have been delighted to see the huge visitor, which lives on a diet of schooling fish, squid, and crustaceans. A spokesman for Denia Town Hall told RTN: “Normally these whales swim 20 or 30 miles off the coast. However, studies are being carried out to find out why they approach the coast. “It has been discovered they close to between 200 and 1,000 metres off the Denia coast until they reach Cap de Sant Antoni where they change course and quickly head away again.” Fin whales are now a protected species. The current estimated global population is between 100,000 and 119,000. They were hunted heavily during the 20th Century, in the southern hemisphere, 750,000 were slaughtered between 1904 and 1979.

Desperate times at ARC ANIMAL CHARITY ARC is desperate for help after rescuing a flood of puppies in recent weeks – adding to the menagerie already saved by the association. by Jack Troughton AT THE end of May, 11 six-week-old puppies were taken in by ARC and in the first week of this month another 11 puppies were also saved. A litter of nine was acquired after the puppies were found dumped beside bins on the Vall Del Pop – they were so young their eyes were still closed. And another two were brought into ARC two days later – sadly two siblings found with them had already died. RTN was told: “Things have just gone crazy. Again Jayne and Sally have taken the care of these pups on board but are desperate for help. They need to finish building kennels

and they need food and money.” ARC is appealing for unwanted building materials and volunteers to help build the much-needed kennels – as well as foster families who can help care for puppies and kittens. The charity would also welcome donations of puppy and kitten food – Mercadona’s own brand dry puppy and kitten food; wet dog food and wet cat food in foil wraps; as well as cat litter – as well as unwanted pet equipment; including beds, leads, collars, and unused medicines. ARC collection tins can be found at various premises. Already supporting the char-

Call for change to EU Bill

AN AMENDMENT to the controversial EU Referendum Bill has been tabled in the House of Commons – calling for all expats to have a voice in the coming ballot. by Jack Troughton The proposed legislation, which will determine whether the UK remains a member of the European Union or leaves, has now reached the ‘committee stage’. But a last minute amendment proposed by MPs Mike Gapes and Keith Vaz calls for all British citizens living in Europe to have a vote – even if they are currently barred by the ’15 year rule’. The pair’s amendment states “A British citizen resident overseas within the European Union will be eligible: (a) to register to vote and (b) to vote in the referendum irrespective of the length of time that the citizen has been resident overseas.” They explain: “The amendment would entitle British citizens living in any country in the European Union to vote in the referendum irrespective of the time they have been living overseas.” STEP FORWARD Campaigner Brian Cave believes the proposed change “was a huge step forward” for

all British expats around the globe to enjoy ‘full life’ voting. Predicting a ‘votes for life’ bill to be presented within the year – as promised by the Conservative Government in its election manifesto, he said: “No opportunity must be missed to move forward.” The committee stage of the bill began on Tuesday. As yet there is no mention of the 1.5 million British citizens living within the EU – many without a referendum vote at present. However, Philip Hammond MP did mention the 15-year-rule situation – and only once – while making introductory observations introducing the bill. Stag party cause havoc at Airport MANCHESTER AIRPORT passengers reported a group of men on a stag party had begun drinking at 6am. The stag party, who expressed loudly their destination as being Benidorm, were seen drinking from 6am and surprisingly were allowed to board their aircraft. Passengers reported that the group, who smelt heavily of alcohol then began shouting loudly to each other from one end of the aircraft to the other using foul language until one of the cabin crew asked them to calm down. The aircraft, still on the runway, became quiet for a short period of time until just after take off, when the group of men started drinking from a bottle that they had obtained from their hand luggage. The bottle being passed around then became the reason for further bad language between the stag party members as some said they had not had their fair share. The remaining passengers on the flight were reported to be subdued and with a two and a half hour flight ahead of them just tried to ignore the rowdy group. Cabin crew reported the issues to the pilot, who then announced that the disruptive behaviour must stop or the offending passengers would face life time bans with the airline. Surprisingly enough, when the drinks trolley patrolled down the aisle the stag group were allowed one drink per person, presumably to keep them appeased for the rest of the flight. One of the group, as reported by a passenger, finally realised that their behaviour was not acceptable and moved between his friends asking them to curtail the noise and behave themselves. Finally the group, possibly through excess alcohol quietened down and the flight landed safely with many relieved passengers just wanting to continue with their onward journey. Airlines are continually experiencing difficulties with stag and hen parties who want to start their adventure as soon as they reach the departing airport, and are trying to find a balance between such groups travelling and the other passengers on the flights.

Safely back home by Jack Troughton CANCER PATIENT Barry Hargreaves is safely back at home with his wife Karen after being helped by the MABS Cancer Support Group and Grant A Wish. Barry had been treated in San Juan Hospital in Alicante with Karen staying in a nearby hotel when he was scheduled to be moved to a hospice in Villajoyosa. However, Karen was determined to get Barry back to their Benidorm home and proposed to discharge her husband. Once Grant A Wish learned of their story they quickly acted. “After many weeks of hospital treatment, Karen wanted him back at home and to care for his post-operative needs rather than going to a hospice bed,” said Ramon Howard, of Grant A Wish. The charity heard of the Hargreaves’ plight while visiting the parents of premature baby Freddie – now back home in Bolton – who stayed at the same hotel. MABS stepped in with the necessary medical equipment while Grant a Wish provided “goodies” like flowers and chocolates, a television, a wingback chair for Barry, and with the help of telecommunications company Telitec an internet service and UK television programmes to be beamed in. Bonfire night

by Jack Troughton THOUSANDS OF people along the Costa Blanca will make a leap of faith on Tuesday night – 23rd June – as they jump through the flames of bonfires. The historic celebrations take place on beaches along the coast but in Javea, the ‘Nit Dels Focs’ – night of the fires – has official status as an event of special interest for tourists and visitors. The fun starts at midnight and is part of the annual festival ‘Foguerres de Sant Joan de Javea’ – and the fire jumping is in the Old Town streets where there are seven bonfires to be negotiated. It is believed jumping the fires takes away a person’s problems. Everyone will sport a floral crown of twigs and at the end of the midsummer trial, the crowds will move to a huge bonfire to throw the headgear into the flames and make a wish. Beware the street lights going out. It means the entrance of the ‘Correfocs’ and being chased by firework-wielding costumed figures to the deafening noise of drums. It is advised to wear old clothes and a hat as the sparks fly!

tions manager, who installed a router and set top box. Gemma added: “This service has been given to them for the year and will hopefully take their minds off things a bit. “Karen is very happy as she has been able to contact her family and friends back in the UK on Skype through the internet service we provided...and has started getting back into Eastenders!”

Appreciated MAY I offer a huge thank you to all the hard working people who produce RTN each week. As well, the Spanish lessons by Jane Cronin have helped considerably. The letters page is great, and I love the cartoons by Carter McKeague that go with the letter of the week. (One of my neighbours said she could relate to last week’s cartoon about renewing a Bus Pass.) Without a doubt, these give RTN an edge over all the British newspapers on the coast. Keep up the good work, you are appreciated. Sincerely, Joan Ashmore, Benijófar

Such a shame I returned two weeks ago to the UK after two weeks in Benidorm which I really enjoyed, apart from the beggars and prostitutes, especially in the nightlife area. The prostitutes especially seemed to surround drunken young lads and manhandle them, touching them in intimate areas and possibly going through their pockets. I witnessed this on several occasions and couldn’t believe they were allowed to behave like this. The police were nowhere to be seen. I have written to the Benidorm Tourist Office but have not received a reply. After two weeks I doubt I will now receive one. It’s such a shame this is being allowed in such a popular resort. D Mills

People do what they shouldn’t and don’t do what they should Dear Editor: Is it just us, or do other readers suffer similar situations as we do in our urbanization? I was asked to be the president of our urbanization, but had to decline because of my poor health. However, I feel sorry for urbanization presidents who try to make people obey the rules in the communal pool. Yesterday, some young people with a child were in the pool area and they were breaking several of the rules clearly posted on the pool gate. The elderly president went to the pool to confront

them, and received verbal insults from people half her age. It was a disgrace to see people willfully breaking rules, and then verbally assaulting a president twice their age who was just trying to get them to obey those rules. It’s discouraging to see peopledo what they shouldn’t and not do what they should. People break rules because they have a problem with authority. Please show respect for other people. Lottie (Rosemary Brown) gets flirtatious with Reggie (Mike Martin)

Affairs in suburbia INFIDELITY IS on the menu when two couples meet for a barbecue in Alan Ayckbourn’s hilarious one-act play ‘The Kidderminster Affair’. by Jack Troughton JAVEA PLAYERS introduce Lottie and Teddy Bulbin and friends and neighbours Penny and Reggie Bottlecamp to audiences at Javea’s Casa de Cultura between Monday 6th July and Saturday 11th July. Lottie confides in old school friend Penny she suspects husband Teddy of having an affair. She has discovered a bill for a double room at the Kidderminster Travelodge in the pocket of a suit he asked her to take to the dry cleaners. Penny advises revenge. And protective Penny is angry. “An-

gry for you darling,” she tells her friend. “Start up a love affair of your own. Give him a taste of what it’s like to be on the receiving end. Flirt darling, with the first man who gives you a second glance.” However, Penny probably did not mean that Lottie would take such advice literally – because the first man is her husband Reggie. Javea Players’ summer offering starts with the enjoyment of dining alfresco in Javea Old Town’s historic Plaza Baix. The Bar Imperial is serving a selection

of tapas, followed by a choice of Costilla de Cerdo or grilled Dorada, postre, and a half bottle of wine. After the meal it is just a short walk to the venue and a seat to enjoy Lindsay Johnson’s production of The Kidderminster Affair. Dinner is served at 7pm. Tickets are 15€ for the whole evening, including a 1€ donation to support local charities Caritas and the Harvest Store. Booking early is strongly advised, call 96 647 2876 or email boxofficejp@gmail.com

To Russia with love

MUSIC LOVER John Deacon was thrilled to meet old friend Valery Gergiev, currently music director of the Mariinsky Opera House in St Petersburg, when he took a group of nine to the Russian city’s historic White Nights Festival. by Jack Troughton JOHN, WHO runs Concerts Costa Blanca, and his eight companions spent a week in St Petersburg and were able to enjoy a feast of culture - attending performances of Verdi’s Aida; SaintSaens’ Samson and Dalila, Il Trovatore, again by Verdi; and Wagner’s Lohengrin; as well as a ballet. “Gregiev received me on one of the nights in order I could present him with a History of Russian Music, published in 1914 and written by a distant relative of my family, Montagu Montagu-Nathan, that I had promised him many years ago” he said. “And I also had him sign – finally, the Laser Disc sleeve of a video programme that I edited for Philips Classics when he first brought the (then) Kirov Company to Covent Garden in 1991.” John, who lives in Javea, added it really was a small world. Concerts Costa Blanca had twice brought Chinese pianist Haochen Zhang to perform in Teulada and Alicante and the musician had played with Gergiev at last summer’s 2014 Proms in London. “This year he has played twice with Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra. The last, and most recent occasion, was in St Petersburg at the Russian celebration of the end of the Second World War.”

HELP members and their friends were out in force at the Los Leones Restaurant in Moraira where everyone enjoyed a three-course meal before the quiz – people dug deep to buy raffle ticket and to play a half-time game of bingo to add to the total made on the night. It was the third successful quiz to be organised by HLP Treasurer Malcolm Bunn, who thanked the restaurant for its hospitality and for helping the evening run smoothly. Quirky news......

Mystery of holes in Swiss cheese solved

Pride of Lionesses LIONESSES ENJOYED a Valencia safari after the ex-servicewomen flew into Alicante Airport from the UK and across Europe to enjoy a reunion in the sun. by Jack Troughton

In all, 30 members of the Women’s Royal Army Corps (WRAC) Association arrived in Benidorm - all have served in the Regular or Territorial Army or the ATS, and included six Chelsea Pensioners. The association is known as the ‘lionesses’ because of the emblem on the WRAC badge and

after the title of their membership journal. Mel Howell of Beniconnect Travel Agents – who served with WRAC herself – organised accommodation at Benidorm’s Hotel Brasil and arranged numerous trips for the girls to enjoy their stay. And despite a busy schedule there was time for the Lionesses to renew old friendships,

make new ones, as well as enjoying the hospitality of Spain. Branches of the WARC Association exist throughout the UK and its Mediterranean Branch, administered from Alicante, has members along the Costa Blanca. For more details, visit http://wracassociation.org.uk/

APPARENTLY THE holes are caused by tiny particles of hay - contradicting the old wives’ tale that mice are responsible. Scientists have finally solved a mystery that has baffled them for a century why does Swiss cheese have holes? Microscopically small hay particles get into the milk and create holes as the liquid matures into cheese. The discovery also solves another riddle - why the famous holes in cheeses like Emmentaler or Appenzeller have been getting smaller or disappearing completely over the last 15 years. It is because the milk has been getting cleaner. The “Agroscope” Institute claimed the transition to fully-automated, industrial milking systems has caused holes to decline. “It’s the disappearance of the traditional bucket,” said spokesman Regis Nyffeler. Researchers at the government-funded body carried out tests in which they added different amounts of hay dust to milk. Agroscope said the subject had been under study since at least 1917.

A case for the defence

Castle ruins

by Jack Troughton THE REMAINS of castles, towers, and fortifications, almost litter the mountains of the Marina Alta and a new exhibition explains why these defences were strategic strongholds. Years of exploration have mapped out the sites and anyone interested in history will discover why such perches were chosen, who built them – and what they originally looked like. And next Friday (26th June) AMUX – the Friends of Javea Museum – officially opens the exhibition that aims to provide some of the answers. ‘The Islamic Castles of the Marina Alta’ is the first project pioneered by the group and will be on show at the museum until Thursday 30th July. At the opening, Josep Ivars Perez, a well-known local expert of historical

architecture and restoration, will set the scene before the official unveiling by local British resident Michael Stephenson. Michael gifted the museum his personal site plans for over 50 castles – the inspiration of the exhibition – after he and colleagues spent years exploring the mountains and ruins of the Costa Blanca, drawing plans of the remaining buildings and ruins they discovered. HERITAGE They prepared accurate scale drawings and took valuable photographs of a heritage gradually vanishing with time. And because the castles and fortifications stretch across such a wide area of the country, AMUX plans to show its work in other municipalities.

Joaquim Bolufer, Javea’s municipal archaeologist and director of the town’s museum, has thanked Michael for his generous donation. “Many of the plans are the most accurate in existence. They have provided material for a unique exhibition of interest, not only to Javea residents, but to people all over the Marina Alta, Marina Baixa, and El Comtat.” AMUX is an international organisation with members who share an active interest in the history and archaeology of Javea and the Marina Alta. As well as supporting the museum itself, it organises talks and excursions. For more information visit the museum or the website www.amuxabia.weebly.com

Choir provides battle soundtrack THE ENGLISH Choir of Teulada-Moraira provided a musical backing to the climax of the Moors and Christians battle last Saturday from the ramparts of Moraira Castle. by Jack Troughton THE CHOIR was “privileged and honoured” to be invited to take part in the re-enactment of the Christian victory over the Moors and enjoyed an uninterrupted view of the action. Colourfully dressed in embroidered Moorish kaftans, the choir sang excerpts from ‘Las Miserables’ – and members said it was a wonderful end to the current season. A busy and successful year has already seen the English Choir perform in the Church of Our Lady of Desemparats the previous Monday (8th June). Under the baton of Musical Director Joanna Baldwin, the choir sang to a packed church with a varied programme of material – starting with ‘My Fair Lady Choral Selection’, the music continued with ‘California Dreaming’, ‘When I’m Sixty Four’, a selection from ‘Salad Days’, and ‘Va Pensiero’ or ‘The Chorus of Hebrew Slaves’ from Verdi’s ‘Nabucco’ in Italian. Other items included ‘Phantom of the Opera choral Selection’, ‘The Rhythm of Life’ from ‘Sweet Charity’, John Rutter’s ‘Gaelic Blessing’, and ‘The European Anthem’ – adapted from Beethoven’s ‘Ode to Joy’. The concert ended with ‘We’ll Meet Again’ – prompting the audience to join in – before the choir enjoyed a standing ovation. After a well-earned break, the choir will resume rehearsing for an autumn concert ‘A Trans-Atlantic Conversation’, which contrasts popular British and American Musicals from the latter half of the last century to the present day. It will take place in November at the Salon De Actors in Teulada. For more information contact Judith on 96 648 0195 or email littleju@gmail.com

Tax obligations in Spain

by

Carlos Baos

from White & Baos Abogados Solicitors Lawyers

Non residents income tax.

AS WE do every year, we wish to remind readers who are Non Tax Residents in Spain, that they are still obliged to pay Income Taxes in Spain for Non Tax Residents, even if they do not have any income in Spain, just for the fact of owning a property here. IF YOU live in Spain and but are not registered with the taxman as a tax resident or you do not submit taxes as tax residents, you could be legally considered as Non Tax Resident, as no notice has been given to the Tax Authority. Non Tax Residents could be liable to pay Wealth Tax, but only if the value of their assets in Spain (after deducting debts, i.e: pending capital of the mortgage, etc.) is above 700.000€. If you are Non Tax Resident in Spain ( or you are not legally tax resident in Spain), you will need to pay tax for income in Spain (Income Tax for Non Residents, IRNR): such as: rents from a letting, interest on bank accounts, etc., If you do not

have any income but you own a property or a share on a property, your tax bill will be based on a calculation as per the Cadastral Value (value that appears on your Spanish Local Rates receipt from the Town Hall, the SUMA office or the equivalent). Even now it is quite common for people who are Non Fiscal Residents in Spain ( or not legally Tax Resident in Spain) to simply not pay this tax; usually due to ignorance or neglect and especially when they have no income in Spain and only own a house. Caution is needed as the Spanish Tax Office, equivalent to the Spanish Inland Revenue (Agencia Tributaria), is investigating property owners in Spain who do not pay taxes

as either tax residents or non tax residents, urging them to update their status and pay the applicable tax. If you are not sure if you are “legally or officially” tax resident or non tax resident, if you want to know what is the most convenient for you, we can assist you, studying your personal situation. If you are non tax resident, do not forget to meet your tax obligation if you want to avoid a possible tax inspection, penalties, etc. We could deal with your tax affairs as non tax residents in Spain.

We can help you make pension freedoms work

THE GOVERNMENT’S overhaul of our pension system is being derailed by companies that are determined to deny savers access to their money. THE PENSION freedoms were announced by George Osborne in March 2014 and the new regime has been, in theory at least, effective since April 6 this year. These pension freedoms are central to everything investors most value: the ability to control

their investments and make the most of them. Mr. Osborne’s radical pension reforms promised over-55s the choice to withdraw pension cash as they pleased, in its entirety or in small sums, or leave it invested. Annuities, hated by most and perceived by many as compulsory, would become just one of many pension choices. But many pension providers are today refusing to offer the facilities that will make these freedoms real. Last Thursday it was revealed that one of the UK’s biggest providers had cancelled the opportunity to take the new pension freedoms. Friends

Life, part of Aviva, had originally told customers they would be able to take money from their pension funds as often as they needed after age 55. But it is now sending out letters announcing that the decision has been reversed. It has since emerged that three further major providers, Phoenix, Virgin and Now: Pensions are not offering customers the freedoms either, while many other firms have admitted to a plethora of restrictions that will prevent savers from having “bank account” style access to their money. Problems faced include long delays, rip-off charges, unreliable information, or being denied the new access to

pension cash altogether. Mr. Osborne’s proposals are now in danger of being sunk by the pension industry’s commercial interests. While some companies are clearly keen to capture business and compete in the new world of accessible, flexible pensions, other providers, mainly the large insurers that for decades profited under the old regime, are dragging their feet. Electricity rises by 4.3% over the year AT A time where, for many of us, every euro counts, households have seen yet another increase in their electricity bills.

by Jeanette Rice Figures, provided by FACUA-Consumers in Action, show that the average electricity bill for May 2014 was 71.46 euros compared to 74.50 euros last month. Two years ago the electricity providers underwent an extensive overhaul and it was felt that prices had stabilised. Although the increase from May 2014 to May 2015 do not

appear to be as excessive as some in the past FACUA has requested that the government take control of the situation and make sure that prices are fixed. The consumer group has demanded that the electricity providers adhere to the EU Court of Justice regulation that states consumers should be informed of any price increase before it is enforced.

Trouble ahead if you have poor soil A TOUCH of rain this morning prompted me to spend a while on the computer to prepare this week’s gardening article, but not much more forecast to the end of June. by

Dick Handscombe Holistic gardener and author

SO WE might be in for a long drought period yet again. A big change from my first summer holiday in the house when it rained for 10 days in the middle of June and heavy storms each month until the September gota fria meant that summer watering was less of a problem than these days especially if one has not improved the garden soil before planting, purchased poor quality composts for containers, or planted thirsty plants happier in their original wetter climes in northern Europe or the tropics. Many older expats will remember their pre Spanish gardening days when even in wetter climes it was wise to improve soils with horse manure, collected initially from passing horse drawn bread, milk and beer carts; quality real peat purchased in solid blocks; home-made compost; leaf mould and chicken and rabbits from the garden or a neighbour. Now in Spain many newcomers assume that because local hillsides are covered with rosemary thyme and gorse that the soil in their gardens must be good. In many cases the reality is rather different. Likewise with sacks of compost and much of today’s peat is young peat which is of less initial and lasting benefit. Occasionally one does get nice surprises. I visited a local agricultural co-operative and a chicken food supplier that both sell various brands of soil improvers and composts. Having loaded up a bag of dried goat manure and a sack of worm compost I spied a new compost product. Having read the information on the sack I immediately purchased

a sack. Its mix objectives and ingredients indicated a thoughtful mixer and packer somewhere in the country, in fact the producer was Hnos. Marco de Celadas S.L. based in Celedas, Teruel. A contact might trace a local stockist near you. The HM7 product looks as if it is popular with Spaniards as I had to buy the last bag. The mix objectives on the sack were: A high porosity to give an excellent distribution of air and water, thus caring for the health of the roots. Contains natural organic fertilizer to improve the physico-chemical properties of soil, thus producing optimum plant growth. Provides by retention the nutrients and water needed by plants. Water retention 70% by volume. • Suitable for sowing, cultivation and transplantation of all types of medicinal plants. Interestingly the ingredients included coconut peat, natural peat, neem cake which manages nemotodes and helps control snails and slugs, micro mineral elements and perlite. The latter we use neat sometimes for starting of small seeds. For cuttings of succulents and shrubs I will add some grit and sharp sand. This compost product matches the gardeners needs described in the book ‘How to use less water in your garden – A practical guide to waterwise Mediterranean style gardening worldwide’. The book is available inexpensively from Amazon Books.

White water river rafting by Keith Nicol

ENERGETIC MEMBERS of U3A Marina Baixa enjoyed an exciting river rafting trip on the fast-flowing waters of the Segura River in Murcia. The trip enticed 46 of the association onto the waters of a river much higher and faster flowing than a U3A adventure 12 months ago – requiring determined paddling and the excitement of shooting several rapids. And several of the party requested the chance of a quick dip at the group’s penultimate stop. Guides took the brave souls back up river where they launched themselves into the water – the current was so strong it was impossible to swim but cries of excitement were heard before they rounded a bend and were ‘fished’ out by the

professionals. By the end of the journey, the group was exhilarated but also wet and tired. They enjoyed a shower and change of clothes before a meal at a local restaurant. U3Aa Marina Baixa holds its meetings on the fourth Monday of the month. The venue for June only is the Albir Playa Hotel. This will be on Monday 22nd June and doors open at 10am – the desks close at 10.50am for a prompt 11am start. Anyone wishing to join U3A is assured a warm welcome. There is a lot of hatred between them, and each of them are saying that if the other’s partner is present, then they are not going. I want my Dad to walk me down the aisle, but Mom says it should be my Step Dad. This is your wedding day, and it’s not for your Mum to decide who gets to walk you down the aisle. You need to have a serious talk with both of your parents and put down some very strict ground rules. As you are paying for your own wedding, they are guests, and it is incredibly rude for guests to dictate to the host what can and can’t take place. A lot of families are in this situation these days, but they wouldn’t make the day miserable for the bride and groom. Your wedding day should not be overshadowed by the tension you will be feeling from warring parents.

Is he cheating?

My husband and I moved to Spain a year ago, and bought a Bar. We took on staff, and there is one particular waitress who I never liked. After a while, my husband said that there was no need for me to go in to help. I suspect there is something between them - when I turn up, they exchange looks, and then she leaves the room. I saw a text message, which thanked him for running her home one night. When I asked him about it, he said there was no such message, and my suspicions were all in my head. Our marriage wasn’t good when we lived in the UK, and we moved here for a fresh start. If you are sure that he is having an affair, you need to gather as much evidence of his infidelity as you can, before you confront him. Tell him you’re going to be helping out at the bar again. If he is innocent, this shouldn’t be a problem. This will give you a better understanding of what is really going on.

Nothing new

 Actions midweek involving Saturn and Mars allow you to see things from a very different angle. It would be very wise to leave things alone at the moment, since one thing could lead to another and there have been too many false starts. Stick to your guns and be very flexible in your outlook as this will see you well on the way to going home. Odd that you seem to be very much back to where you started, and yet you seem to be ready to run things by just one more time. You have looked for a solution that limits further pain, but the actions of Jupiter taking on mighty Uranus cannot help but to rake up things from the dim and distant past that are best left a secret. Mercury dallies with Neptune and establishes a financial corner that you would be best advised to keep fully in check right now. You should be taking control of expenditure but there have been some one off purchases just lately that have led to you pushing out the boat to balance the books. Take control and tighten that belt! All aspects of the current Moon’s cycle lead you to be feeling somewhat bereft and disconnected. Things just do not seem to be working out the way that they should be, but that is no reason to let go of what your are holding onto that is truly precious to you. Things will get better shortly, but take good care of yourself meanwhile. The Sun is ensconced with Saturn and this action seems to be responsible for some irritating last minute changes and cancellations to your schedule. It is the little things that sometimes mean so much; but delays now are for some positive reason and all will be fully revealed very shortly if you just have the patience to sit this one out. Time is on your side this week as Mercury ensures that your channels of communication are open and ready; and that time is of the essence. Ceres balances and controls all aspects of timing, and it may be a good time to let others know what you really think of them and what they really do mean to you, now, while you have a window. Venus and Pluto take a midweek tryst to examine what’s on offer right now. It seems as if you wish to seek pastures new, but it is good to hear what others are saying, since they do rely on you somewhat and there is still work to be done where you are. With all the will in the World you will be unable to make everyone happy, but stay trying. Think before you take that evasive action you may very well live to regret. You have been shaken lately, and it takes such a lot to do that to you. However you are not the person to take anything lying down, and whatever has to be said must be said. Mercury stirs your innermost emotions and fans the flames of a quiet and subtle revenge. Jupiter and Uranus work very well together especially as good fortune and invention go hand in hand. Instead of waiting for something to happen you have to make it happen now while you can; since there needs to be a suitable time for adjustments and weighing up the pros and the cons. The way ahead is clearer now for sure. Make hay when the sun shines since it is time now to put things back together again and just the way they were. Neptune’s square on Mercury opens the doors for some frank and pertinent business negotiation. If things are as stable as they are then it is time to put the energies of the past back into practise any which way. With the luck of Jupiter at your side it is time to consider a better offer, whatever your initial reactions may have been. Somebody is offering you the hand of change, and this may very well be your way ahead, all things considered. There are those who appreciate your finesse and loyalties and others who take it for granted. Neptune squares on Mercury and this does much to emphasise your current position and guides you towards the changes it would be very wise to take on board. Your natural doubting often finds that you miss out on situations whereby you can uniquely steer the ship onwards, but feel that it somehow cannot possibly be you!

If It’s Your Birthday This Week

Take stock of a situation that is more than just a thorn in your side at the moment. Suffice to say that things have to get very much better as you approach the workings of another astrological year with all you can muster to bring forth change and suitable resolution.

SINCE THE Oracle of Delphi began her musings about fortune and fame back in Ancient Greece, people have always had a fascination with what the future had in store for them. Superstition has always been there, as anyone remotely able to do so, chose to give their verdicts on what would occur to hapless individuals that needed to know what the future laid in store for them. From the poorest rendition of the interpretation of ancient runes, amidst peasant seers, to the splendour of the Divine Astrologers, who whispered into the very ears of countless Monarchs, and advised them of portents amidst the frippery and gnostic trappings of self indulgence. There has always been a need to be sure what is coming next and faith has always been placed in a variety of ways that allow each and every portent to be adequately explained away. Nothing is new in a World whereby the gifted share their energies with those who need a warning or who are waiting for the green light to do something that they feel needs timbre and occasion to allow it to happen. I have often had hands thrust in my face because people think that I read palms. Sadly there are few who can read palms these days, but the hands are so revealing and can reflect much information. Once I went to one of the great Gypsy Petulengro family of fortune tellers in Brighton. People joke about, “On the Pier” readings but they can be intense and Romany readings are generally very special. Sadly I never got my reading though because my money was cheerfully refunded to me and my hand reading declined. I think our Romany that day saw my own gift and wondered the true intention of my visit. Indeed my Mother was stopped by a gypsy woman who told her openly that I was a medium. I was seven years old. Clutching at my jumper label at the time she spoke to us I was insistent that I was a large....not medium. I knew nothing about the other sort of Medium at the time. My mother promised to tell me the difference one day, but it was actually me who told her in time to come. I think we have all used a version of the Ouija board at some time of our lives. Like so many others, mine was a giggling teenage thing complete with darkened room, candles and scraps of paper. There was always somebody, though never me, who manipulated the upturned glass, therefore spoiling the action of what could have been some farewell tale of a delinquent entity who could have truly delivered us a strong message. Exploring one night I tried the Ouija with my best friend, Angie. The glass kept spelling out a name: Tolby Fatty. We laughed at the name at the time, and all through our friendship I always asked her whether her Mr. Fatty had ever revealed himself. That was until one day when she actually met a Turkish Man whose name was Tolbe Fatteh. Angie couldn’t wait to tell me that after all these years he had come into her life! As A Medium I have always attended seances and physical demonstrations and these have brought me closer to a range of spiritual talents whilst exposing my own personal level of divination. I have never had extreme gusts of winds that whirled the curtains haphazardly upwards and flung open French windows...but cold winds have blown. I have never ever said, “Is there anybody there?” but there has been someone closely there so many times, so I never had to ask. I have never heard the peal of thunder or the electric force of a lightening strike either, but have many time felt the force of Spirit making that bridge between this World and that of the Spirit World. Call it hunches or something, but maybe those wizards of the past had something good going on. We will always seek to know aspects of our future, as a warning, to living out the very best of our life the very best way we possibly can.... nothing new in that.

KENNY, MY Auntie read tea cups. She was very good at what she did, and many people came to consult her. Does anyone still read this way now? I was brought up to respect all types of divination. Cleo.L. Me too, Cleo. Those who worked with tea cups and coffee grounds were often using the cups and saucers as a visible prop for the clients whilst they were really using their clairsentient energies amidst the coffee grounds and tea leaves. I used to have Lebanese friends in London who always made strong Arabic coffee at the end of a meal and handed me the grounds on a saucer to read fortunes. I do not know anyone anywhere who uses this art of divination, but if any reader does know of anyone please drop me a line.

Not a Royal Couple after all!

AUGUSTA, KENTUCKY sits on the southern bank of the Ohio River, and George Clooney was there last week with his lovely wife Amal visiting his kinfolk for their annual family get together. At the last census in 2010 the city had a population of just 1,190, meaning George and Amal were real easy to pick out, and the famous couple duly obliged by posing for a tonne of selfies when asked by the local residents. One of the regular events during George´s visit is to go to local restaurant Caprioni´s, and this time the party loving Clooney Clan all stood up and sang Happy Birthday to a woman on another table. After a stop to show off his sports skills at Augusta High School, George and his human rights lawyer wife visited Magee’s Bakery in Marysville, enjoying some ‘Transparent Tarts’ when they popped in, and no, that’s NOT a euphemism. The baker’s co-owner Russell Dickson told Us Weekly: “They were fun as a couple, ordering Transparent, that’s his thing, he loves the Transparent … (it’s like a Bakewell Tart with macaroni in it! – Yep! I know!!) George and Amal rounded off their trip with dinner and jazz at restaurant Urban Artifact in Cincinnati, and co-owner Scott Hand told ABC News: “He came primarily to hear the Blue Wisp Big Band play and taste some of our beer and have a good time,” which I´m sure he did Scott! “it’s nice to see such a big name revisit his childhood roots, right? Here’s hoping they had a brilliant time!” George Clooney won a Golden Globe for Best Actor in 2000 for his portrayal of Ulysses Everett McGill in ´Oh Brother How Art Thou, ´ a movie set in the southern states he clearly knows so well!

Headline of the Week

‘People are more shocked Kate Moss flies Easyjet than that she was escorted off the plane by police!’ Metro Online. N O W THAT Americ a n I d o l is ending Mariah Carey has decided to come clean about the show. “Boring and fake,” she began, “I had to make things up when all I wanted to say was ‘it was good’ and end it there!” Then the big one when she revealed “and it should´ve been about the contestants and not the nonexistent feud between me and Nicki Minaj!” The TRUTH at last!!

Video of the Week! Punch in ‘Awesome Catch by the Bear.’ Brill!

IF YOU fancy sliding down a dinosaur’s tail and riding a train ride through a volcano and have $2million tucked under the mattress, make your way to Arizona and track down Linda Speckels who´s looking to sell Flintstones Bedrock City. “I love the property’ she said, ‘but it’s time somebody else came in and did something with it.” All you have to yabba dabba do is find $2million!

ALL THAT snarling Andy Murray does on a tennis court might well come from his love of dogs, as when he´s on the road racketing up a few shillings he always finds time to have a quick video chat with Maggie May and Rusty. “I Skype the dogs all the time, I even say their name, but I get nothing back!” the Scot told My VIP magazine. That’s because they´re dogs Andy! LAST WEEK Brazilian Diogo “Di Light” Leichtweis won the Elvis impersonators contest in Tupelo where Elvis was born. Diogo admitted “I visited Graceland in 2006 and have been performing as the King ever since, back home I’m a lawyer,” he freely admitted before adding “all the impersonators are very supportive of one another, I probably know most of them, it’s like a brotherhood!” How cool is that!!

No more blues by Jack Troughton

MUSIC FANS are in for a treat as harmonica player Buddy Paul and the Dirty Dog Blues Band play the ‘Big BBQ Blues Bash’ on Wednesday 24th June in Javea. The party marks the end of Costa Blanca Blues Social Network – CBBlues - 2014-2015 season and it is hosted by the newly re-opened Laguna Ribs, an American-style restaurant. Buddy Paul is based in Valencia and trio Dirty Dog Blues Band is from the UK but has just enjoyed supporting American boogie keyboard player Gene Taylor in Spain’s third-largest city. CBBlues aims to bring the best musicians to the Costa Blanca and provide venues ranging from party rooms to private villas in Teulada, Benitachell and Javea. The organisation and its informative website are run by Karla Daracos, a fan of blues, who wants to spread the word and already has top musicians performing locally and growing audiences.

Buddy Paul (left) with the Dirty Dog Blues Band

“It’s been an amazing year!” she said. “Over 30 topnotch professional blues performers have come to the social parties, integrated, and had fun with our mostly English speaking fans. Karla said she wanted to firmly establish the Costa Blanca on the ‘blues map’ – the CBBlues website attracts on average over 200 hits a day. LIGHT “The website has been a guiding light for blues fans living on the coast as well as visitors,” she added. Earlier in the year CBBlues’ music director and musician Tom Poole resigned from the position because of ill health and ‘Buddy’ Paul Tidiman stepped in. “Buddy Paul is not only a monster blues harmonica player

but he has given us blues fans 110% of his efforts to make sure that we have the best performers possible for our events,” added Karla. And another positive for the year is the growth of the CBBlues’ monthly ‘Crossroads’ coffee mornings where amateur and professional musicians get to mix and poets, dancers, writers, songwriters and artists get to share talents before a community-style lunch. “The Crossroads events have really been a surprise as people with all types of talents ‘come out of the closet’, so to speak, and feel safe within a collective of friends to share their talents.” The Bid BBQ Blues Bash is at Laguna Ribs, Calle Cannes, Arenal, Javea, from 2pm. Reservations can be made at website www.CBBlues.com

Bookmarks on Firefox

PLEASE AUNTY, I need your help again. IE kept crashing, and I was told to also use Firefox as an alternative. On Firefox, (in Bookmark) we could pin tag (on the top bar) certain things like Speedtest/Bing translate/Crossword solver/cheap flights… Then this morning, when we switched on, they had All disappeared, and not for the first time. Could you tell me, (as usual in ‘idiot form’) how to lock them in? Ken AUNTY SAYS: Firefox has a help topic on this problem. “I can add or change bookmarks but they are lost when I restart Firefox” https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/cant-add-change-or-save-

bookmarks which has two solutions for you to try: One is to Fix the Bookmarks file, and the other to create a new Bookmarks file And one of these should solve the problem.

iPhone storage

HI AUNTY: I have an iPhone 4 with 6Gb. I have closed lots of Apps but still it says I have used 5.0GB and only 360MB left. Where has the other 740MB gone? But when I look at usage it shows 600MB for photos 166 for Facebook. 97 for Google etc. only adding up to 1.4GB. Where has the other 4.6GB gone? Regards, Robert Aunty says: You are not missing any storage space. Don’t forget that the iPhone needs to run the IOS operating system, which will take up some storage, as will any other system required applications. Although your personal storage area may only show “1.4gb”, this may only be data in your personal area, and not any apps or music stored elsewhere. People also often confuse storage space and memory space. Closing apps will stop the apps running in “memory” but it will not remove them from storage.

Loading homepage Hello Aunty, please can you help with a very irritating problem on my laptop? When I go to my homepage on the internet it takes forever and a message eventually appears at the bottom of the screen saying ‘recover webpage’ which I have to click on at least three times before I can access what I want. Is there a solution? Thank you. Sheila Aunty says: It may be that you have an “add on” that is not working correctly for your internet browser, causing it to fail, so you can either go into the options / settings for your browser, and go through the addons and disable / uninstall ones until you find the problematic one. Most browsers also have a “reset” option, which resets everything on your browser. As an alternative, you can simply try another browser like Chrome, Firefox, or Opera, as some browsers work better than others.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin

Prefi xes Des I THOUGHT we could start having a look at prefixes today.

NO, THESE are not anything to do with keeping your dentures in place, although that is a good idea too when you are speaking Spanish. Prefixes are things that are stuck (so yes, “fix” did give us the clue) onto the front of words to change their meaning in some way. There are many of them, but first we’ll look at one of the most obvious and useful prefixes: “des-” which creates an opposite meaning, similar to “un-“ or “dis-“ in English. Here are some examples: Gustar (to please) desgustar (to displease) Igual (equal, same) desigual (unequal, different) Aparecer (to appear) desaparecer (to disappear) Obedecer (to obey) desobedecer (to disobey) Enfadado (angry) desenfadado (easy-going, cheerful) I really like the word “desenfadado” (unangry). We just don’t have the equivalent in English! As you may have already realized, all you really need to do is pick up a dictionary and look under “des” and you will find many more words that do the same thing.

However, be careful because sometimes the root word itself just happens to start with “des” which is not a prefix. For example: desastre (disaster). As far as I know this word has never been the opposite of “astre”, which doesn’t exist, although I don’t know how the word came about in the first place. If you like word games, you might like this one, a clothes shop near my house called “De-sastre”. “Sastre” means “tailor” so “De-sastre” means “of the tailor” and also disaster. I don’t generally buy anything there. Yes, well, anyway, another thing to watch out for is not to confuse “des” with “dis” which does not carry this opposite meaning. I learnt this distinction when I accidentally said “desfrutar” instead of “disfrutar” (meaning “to enjoy”) in a class. One of my Spanish students said that “desfrutar” sounded like “unfruit” and proceeding to mime taking all the fruit off a tree. It’s funny how we are all afraid of being mocked, but when it happens we never make the same mistake again. It is interesting to see how these words often coincide with English and can help us to understand our own language. For example “esperar” means “to wait” and also “to hope”. “Desesperar” means the opposite – and in English when we lack hope we “despair”. The word “despair” clearly comes from the same Latin root as “desesperar”, although in English the word “pair” definitely doesn’t mean to hope!

Phantom The Sheep PHANTOM THE sheep’s face markings resemble Gerard Butler’s in the Phantom film. Farmer Paul Phillips, 50, was stunned when the lamb was born with one half of his face black and the other white - just like Michael Crawford’s famous character. He believes the sheep, nicknamed “The Phantom”, has a recessive gene which has led to the unusual face markings. He added: “It is a pedigree Texel so I know its parentage but it must have a recessive gene for this trait as I have used both the mother and father successfully without this happening. We’ve had lots of people drive up in their cars and take pictures of him. He’s the most famous sheep we’ve ever had.”

Paint balls

APART FROM the Woman’s World Cup, the football season is taking a rest for a couple of weeks. by Keith Nicol The players maybe having their summer break but they are still working hard behind the scenes at CD Torrevieja. With the coaching team confirmed for next season, attention has turned to the stadium for different reasons. Built in the 1970’s, not much has changed at Estadio Vicente Garcia, which is just opposite Sports City. With the last coat of paint being applied nearly a decade ago, Club Director Chris Darwen and his Business and Community Manager Barrie Crawford are appealing to the local community to support them in their efforts to freshen the ground up. “Nobody can deny that the Vicente Garcia is a beautiful place to watch and play football. I’ve watched a lot of games across the world and not many beat being here on a Sunday evening as the sun sets,” said Chris. “Sadly, the ground itself is looking a little tired and we are hoping to get some hands on deck this summer to give it a makeover.” Barrie jumped in to add, “On the 18th July we are holding a Painting Party here at the ground. We are asking for two things really. Firstly, if you cannot make it, donate a pot of paint. Just that gesture will show us that the club means something to the locals. Better still, join us on the 18th, bring the paint and a roller and spend the day with us making the ground look great for the players next season!” Club Vice-President Jefferson Scott has offered to pay for drinks aplenty for the workforce on the day and local businessman Sean Bell will providing some food at no cost to volunteers. The club are appealing for paint donations: white or blue, and asking local people to be at the ground at 10am on July 18th. All you need to bring is a roller and tray, a great attitude and, again, some paint. For more information, contact Chris at the club on: cdtorreviejaofficial@gmail.com or on 966 923 231.

If you want to lose weight and stay healthy - YOU MUST EAT… Part 2 – “Balance Your Meals” On April 14th I wrote about the importance of eating healthy, nutritious foods not to force your body into starvation mode. It is my sincere hope that if your goal is to be healthy, to reach and maintain your ideal weight, you are never going to fall for the myth of dieting. Think about it…How can your body, your brain function at its best if you deprive it of fuel? Even though the brain represents only 2% of the weight of an adult, it consumes 20% of the energy produced by the body. According to Professor David Attwell of University College London - if the brain doesn’t receive nutrient rich fuel, our memory, mobility and senses are powerfully impaired. This statement alone will make you rethink the way you eat. It is crucial to consume balanced meals to keep your body healthy and lean. Eliminating carbohydras, protein, fats, fiber or vitamins and minerals will not only make you sicker but also make dieting futile and keep you spinning in a never ending yo-yo effect. Science today is very clear - if you want to feel good, stay healthy and vibrant for life, you must go back to the basics and eat real food keeping the balance of all nutrients. Then and only then your body will be equipped to pay you back with abundant health. Dr. Ann Wigmore known as “the mother of living foods” once wrote: “The food you eat can be either the safest and most powerful form of medicine or the slowest form of poison”. Think about it when you prepare your meals. Are you making them from fresh produce or are you just grabbing something ready from the store? Is it natural or is it chemically laden? All these things matter in the long run and the further away from their natural, balanced composition they are, the further away you get from your health and ideal weight… To be continued in next articles… TO YOUR HEALTH!

Shop success

VOLUNTEERS WORKING at the Charity Shop of Calpe are looking forward to celebrating its ongoing success with an annual summer barbeque at the end of the month.

HELP joins Day of Solidarity The charity shop team

by Jack Troughton THE SHOP has been in business since 2003 and has donated more than 210,000€ to good causes in the Marina Alta town during that time – last year giving away a record 34,000€ - and hopes to raise the bar again this year.

The shop team has seen increased opening hours this summer, from Monday to Saturday 10am to 1.30pm and Thursday afternoons between 4pm and 7pm. And the shop will remain open until the end of July selling a range of

summer clothing, household items, and small pieces of furniture. The venture always depends on its volunteer staff and the barbecue party is a ‘thank you’ to the team for the extra effort made so far in 2015.

MEMBERS OF HELP of Denia and the Marina Alta joined other charities at a special ‘Dia de Solidario’ at the Jardi de l’Albarda, La Sella, on Sunday to promote its work within the Spanish and expat community. The gardens provided a stunning backdrop for charities attending the event to show off how they could aid others. It was also an opportunity to network over a special paella lunch and HELP President Candy Wright thanked organisers BNI Impronta for its invitation to take part in the event and the excellent organisation of the day.

Los Amigos Golf Society (LAGS): June Competition

Benitachell Bowls Club

14TH JUNE 2015 - FEDERATION COMPETITION - VALENCIAN CHAMPIONS LEAGUE The results and league table after week 6 have been published, showing EL Cid in 1st place and BBC in 2nd, 3 points behind. 13TH JUNE 2015 - BBC AUSSIE PAIRS Pony & Trap out in front by 4 points from Great Expectations & La Banda.

Mick Drummond presenting winners Glenn Read, Ray Reynolds and Dave Davidson

FOR THE first time in a number of competitions Los Amigos Golf Society members had to find their own way to the June venue at Hacienda Golf Course. Thirty six LAGS members eventually teed off from the 1st and 10th tees on a glorious June morning. Now, over the past few competitions slow play has become a bit of a problem. The LAGS committee have however stumbled across a novel solution which is to be implemented at the next outing. Whilst looking for a ball in the rough, secretary Ron Johnston had the shocking experience of a snake slithering across his foot. Immediately the ball was declared lost, a new ball dropped from where the last shot was played, the shot retaken and all 4 players back in the buggies! In future, to speed up play, the committee will release 1000 assorted venomous snakes throughout the rough! The day proved to be tough for some, interesting for others and surprising for one. Golf is hugely unpredictable! After five hacks along a fairway, one of our members confidently claimed to his partner “if you score a point on this hole I’ll bare my backside”. A magnificent fairway wood followed by a ‘tap-in’ left Tony Gleed somewhat red cheeked! The committee would like it to be known that baring ones anatomy on any part of the golf course will not be tolerated!!! The scores reflected the difficulty of the day. Division 1 and overall winner was Glenn Read with 31 points, Division 2 winner was Ray Reynolds with 29 points and Division 3 was won by Dave Davidson with 19 points. Nearest the pin winners were Lenny Whalen (hole 5), Tony Pickworth (hole 8), Gerry McRobert (hole 12) and Fred Harvey (hole 15) The Presentation Evening was held on Tuesday, 9th June in the Black Bull. Our thanks go to Lisa B for the music and the Black Bull catering staff for the excellent food. For more information about the society, its fundraising and future events please go to www.losamigosgolfsociety.es.

10TH JUNE 2015 - BBC SUMMER TRIPLES The results and league table after the latest set of games have been published, showing “Siete Arriba” out in front with 4 teams chasing four points behind, in the BBC Summer Triples League sponsored byIBEX Insurance. 7TH JUNE 2015 - CBBA NORTHERN SUMMER LEAGUE The results and league table have been published after the games for week 4. Javea Sharks are in first place with BBC Panthers 4th and BBC Cougars 5th. Please check out our website www.benitachellbowlsclub.com for full details of the above and for a full update of all forthcoming competitions and results. We’re not just a bowls club, we’re a “Fun Club” and Saturday night 76 members and friends were Barn Dancing in the courtyard to the music of the ‘Shamrockers’. The food was good, the music great and the dancing sometimes a bit of a shambles but everyone had a great time.

The second Golf Major is upon us

The US OPEN from Chamber Bay in Washington State. By Tony Myles CAMPBELL’S MAJOR WAGER BY THE time you are reading this article many of you will have taken advantage of Campbell’s Major Wager. It is Round Two of the free bet that is on offer from Campbell on all the Majors. The rules are simple - select four players, then with a hypothetical 100 points allocate these in whatever proportion you wish, provided that you place no more than 50 points on any one player. On offer at the end of the season is a day of golf at La Sella for two players versus Campbell and his partner, including lunch in the La Sella club house. Having been spectacularly unsuccessful on previous occasions I hesitate to offer my selection but there is always the law of averages which apparently can come into play. So on that basis here are the unfortunate quartet who will benefit from my expertise!

Byeong-Hum An - having progressed from the Challenge Tour to the European Tour and still only 23 he has already enjoyed success this year when in May he won the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth. Current Wm Hill Odds - 66/1 - My stake is 20 Points. Jordan Spieth - with so many records already to his name he is the current Masters winner and displays a cool head under pressure. Current Wm Hill Odds a generous 8/1 - My stake 25 points Ian Poulter - It may be the kiss-of-death but I am convinced that Ian was at the head of the queue when they were handing out wholehearted determination. One day he will prove me right - current WM Hill odds - 80/1. My stake - 20 points. And the big 35 points goes to... Sergio Garcia - how many more times can we

stare at the TV and shout “Come on Sergio!!!”. Current Wm Hill odds - 28/1 My stake - 35 points. So this multi-national selection will either propel me to Major Wager stardom or consign me to the more accustomed mid to lower reaches. In the meantime good luck with your selection.

head 2 head

Good odds! Tony M - You have had some great finals recently with the Campbell Lamont Golf Leagues and the International in Roda. Campbell - They were both excellent events and now everyone will be hoping that they get good odds on their Major Wager selections. Tony M - It reminds me of the last big golf competition I entered. I was 50/1 to win. Campbell - So if I had bet 20€ on you to win . . . . Tony M - Yes. Exactly. . . €20 @ 50/1 - you know what that means? Campbell - Yes. I could have lost €20.

IT IS still possible to be surprised by car design

AS I glance at the Vauxhall Zafira Tourer I notice that there is something a little different about the rear bumper and it’s not because I’ve reversed into something… IN THE centre it looks to me as if it can be pushed to reveal a step, such as you might find on a conversion for a disabled motorist. It is only when I lift the boot lid that I notice a lever and wondering what it does, I pull it. This releases the Flex-Fix integrated bike carrier – what a clever idea. I have never come across a vehicle with such a facility.

Watch the video: www.testdrives.biz

This is a gadget I’d expect Q in the James Bond films to dream up! It’s certainly not a gimmick either because I can see how the active family that would typically purchase this vehicle would want to transport their bicycles when they go away on an adventure. And this for me gives the Zafira another dimension from other people movers. This third generation revamp looks slick and appealing from the outside and the bright red finish of the test model certainly stands out. It is also surprising that despite being a sizeable sevenseater it feels small to drive. If there is difficulty reversing a helpful camera automatically appears in the central display together with helpful beeps that sound when manoeuvring into a tight gap. The third row of seats is nestled underneath the boot and put into position by simply pulling a loop on the back. It’s a comfortable vehicle with plenty of room. That boot is large enough to accommodate a variety of paint tins and other rubbish including a large gas bottle

that needs taking to the tip. When the doors are opened at night the interior is lit up with red lights incorporated into the trim, making it feel quite spaceship-like. For a people mover it’s fast, hitting 60mph from standstill in under 11 seconds and it will almost return 70mpg; which means that it is possible to travel 150 miles without even using an eighth of a tank. There is engine stop/start, which although I am used to these days does perplex me a little. The Zafira has a low bite on the clutch making me wonder whether I have stalled the vehicle. Another issue is the electric handbrake; of which I am not a great fan. You see there’s an automatic hill brake that the driver must put their trust in and I find this difficult. No sooner has the accelerator been pushed and the brake releases and as a result I find myself over revving, which isn’t ideal for economy. Vauxhall Zafira Tourer MPV 2 0 Cdti 130 Se 5dr Price: 31,950€ Top speed: 120mph 0-60mph: 10.6secs Power: 128bhp Economy: up to 68.9mpg
