Compensation before demolition PEOPLE DUPED into buying illegal property in Spain will be paid full compensation before they see their homes in the sun bulldozed, parliament has ruled in “a victory for common sense”. by Jack Troughton A DECADE of campaigning by heart-broken home owners – many of them British chasing the Spanish dream – has led to Madrid changing the law and offering some comfort to innocent victims. There has been a wave of illegal properties being razed to the ground in recent months along Spain’s after court rulings. But despite developers and local politicians being fined and jailed over illegal developments, until now there have been no guarantees of compensation for people duped into buying homes as the bulldozers move in.
The problem is widespread. There are an estimated 300,000 illegal properties in Southern Spain and in Valencia, high profile developments such as Montroi, Catral and Lliber, where people have been conned in significant numbers. Madrid’s change in the law allowing an amendment to the penal code allows a judge to postpone the demolition of illegal dwellings, purchased in good faith, until compensation for the owners was secured. Pressure group Abusos Urbanisticos Almanzora No! (AUAN) – part of the national federation FAUN and based on the model of Benissa-based group AUN – together with its lawyer Gerardo Vazquez were able to
push the amendment forward. AUAN President Maura Hillen said there were 12,697 illegal properties in Almanzora – a situation that had proved “hugely stressful” for owners. She said the Senate had recognised the “injustice” of the situation and the amendment was the “first positive legislation change” although much more needed to be achieved across the country. The monthly shop DEDICATED AND determined couple Elsie and David Spence organise fund raising events and each month carry out a supermarket sweep to buy food for the kids living at the EMAUS home in Relleu.
by Jack Troughton Living in El Campello, both are members of Friends of the Children of EMAUS – a Costa Blanca charity supporting the youngsters who live in family units in homes across the region. Backed by friends living in the town and surrounding villages, Elsie and David organise social events, including meals out

The next fund raiser for the home is at the Hong Kong Restaurant in El Campello on Saturday 28th March. The meal is 10€ and to book a place and support his initiative, contact linda@fcemaus.com
Hundreds go international
U3A smiles
by Jack Troughton NATIONAL COSTUMES, flags, and the aromas of international cuisine cooked up a success for International Day in La Nucia. Crowds packed into the Municipal Camilo Cano sports hall in the town to celebrate La Nucia’s cosmopolitan community and the stage was constantly occupied with musicians, singers and dancers to help the party go with a swing. Flying the flag for Great Britain were members of U3A Marina Baixa and the ‘Olde English Tea Shoppe’ which was buzzing all day serving tea and coffee and a selection of mouth watering cakes – all home baked and donated. And the hard work in preparation for International Day paid off as the team raised over 350€.

Retired couple from Barcelona victims in Tunisia attack by Patricia Thompson WEDNESDAYS GUN attack at the Bardo Museum in Tunis saw two Spaniards among the 19 dead according to the Spanish Foreign Minister, José Manuel García-Margallos. Although the names of the dead were not to be revealed until the families were advised, other sources confirmed that a retired couple from Catalonia, Antonio Cirera Pérez, 75, and Dolores Sánchez Rami, 73 were the two victims. A short announcement in Valencia from Margallos warned of the “huge confusion” surrounding the failed attack against the Tunisian parliament,
“The Tunisian authorities are completely overwhelmed”
which ended with the attackers taking hostages at the nearby museum. “The Tunisian authorities are completely overwhelmed,” explained the minister. Margallos also explained that the couple were part of a group of 90 tourists who had arrived in the Tunisian capital on board two cruises from the companies Costa Cruceros and MSC.
Inditex announces rise in sales Inditex, owner of fashion retail chains such as Zara, Bershka and Massimo Dutti, increased its 2014 sales by 8.3% to €18.1 billion, the company reported on Wednesday, with Zara representing the bulk of the sales. Net profit over the period rose 5.2% to over €2.5 billion, confirming that the world’s largest fashion retailer by sales continues to hold a dominant market position. Inditex has also announced an incentives plan for 70,000 employees with more than two years with the group.
‘‘Not all election hopefuls targeted by courts should be banned’’ says Rajoy PRIME MINISTER Mariano Rajoy admits that corruption is the issue that has most hurt his Popular Party (PP) during his second term in office. But in an interview with radio station Onda Cero, the Spanish leader also defended that the decision to exclude politicians targeted in criminal investigations from running in elections should be made on a caseby-case basis. Rajoy’s words echoed recent statements by former Socialist Prime Minister Felipe González, who told EL PAÍS that it was “a mistake to exclude all investigation targets from the electoral lists.” “It depends,” said Rajoy, adding that being imputado does not necessarily lead to a court conviction. “In fact, not long ago the Supreme Court shelved accusations against relevant political leaders,” he said. To Rajoy, the problem with preventing election hopefuls under court investigation from running in elections is that “you are putting them on trial ahead of time. Every case is different; in each specific case it is necessary to make a concrete decision.” With the PP embroiled in several high-profile corruption investigations, including Gürtel and Púnica, Rajoy noted that the individuals involved in these cases were no longer with the party, and that he was ready to adopt any kind of decision aimed at being “more efficient against corruption, which must not happen again in Spain.”

Report twice requested by High Court Judge in tax implications by Patricia Thompson HIGH COURT judge Pablo Ruz has twice had to request a report from the Tax Agency, estimating how much tax the organization should have paid on shady donations from 2008. The Agency has finally produced its report, putting the figure at €220,167. But the tax experts were at pains to highlight that political party donations, whether illegal or not, are not subject to corporate tax, as the examining magistrate claims. The Tax Agency’s analysis essentially lets the PP off the hook, despite High Court judge Pablo Ruz’s view that the ruling party should have paid tax on the €1,050,000 it accepted in 2008 from donors who either went over the legal personal limit or who were barred from donating because they had been awarded government contracts. The law establishes that any amount over €120,000 in withheld taxes constitutes a crime. The Tax Agency’s estimate of €220,167 is well above that. But the report stresses that non-profit organizations “such as a political party, [the Catholic charity] Cáritas or the Red Cross” are not subject to corporate tax because the money reverts to society.

BRITAIN’S TEN most wanted fugitives believed to have fled to Spain are being hunted in the latest appeal under the banner of Operation Captura. There are still a number of criminals who are evading arrest
by Jack Troughton The independent UK-based crime-fighting charity Crimestoppers, the National Crime Agency (NCA), are once again hot on the trail of those attempting to evade justice by hiding amongst the expat community. And once again – backed by Spanish police – they are appealing for help in a campaign to track down the fugitives and are asking the public to be their “eyes and ears”. The ten men added to the new ‘most wanted’ list by UK law enforcement agencies are wanted in connection with a number of crimes including manslaughter, rape, indecent assault of a child, and drug trafficking. Launched in Madrid on Tuesday, this is the ninth appeal made under operation Captura since 2006 – appeals that have proved to be highly successful. The previous eight calls for help have led in 65 from 76 named fugitives being snared.
British Ambassador Simon Manley said: “I hope that the public will, once again, help us find these fugitives. The ongoing success of Operation Captura is a demonstration of the excellent law enforcement relationship between our two countries and the role that ordinary citizens can play in tracking down criminals. “Together we can insure that these criminals are brought to justice and their ill-gotten gains seized.” SUCCESS Lord Ashcroft KCMG PC, who founded Crimestoppers in 1988, added: “Operation Captura has proved a huge success since it was launched in 2006 and the majority of individuals on our most wanted list have been captured. “However, there are still a number of criminals who are evading arrest. We must insure these individuals are brought to justice. We are confident we can successfully hunt them down with support from the Spanish authorities, as well as
the Spanish and UK police.” And Hank Cole, Head of International operations for the NCA, said: “Spain is not a safe haven for British fugitives. The NCA and its partners will continue to pursue these individuals relentlessly and return them to the UK to face justice.” He said 65 fugitives had been caught from the Captura list along with others linked to other operations, thanks to “excellent” collaboration and intelligence sharing with Spanish colleagues. “However, we still need the support of the public – be our eyes and ears and tell us if you have any information on the whereabouts of our targets.” To give Crimestoppers information from Spain call the free number 900 555 111 which will be answered in the UK by the charity’s call agents. People can also pass on information anonymously via the Crimestoppers number 0800 555 111 or online at www.crimestoppers-uk.org

20 - 26 marCH 2015 Continued from front page British Ambassador Simon Manley welcomed the change in the law. “This is an encouraging development that we hope is moving the legal system closer to providing fair and lasting solutions for British property owners who find themselves facing the threat of demolition. “We will continue to stay in close touch with the property associations and continue to lobby the Spanish authorities – at national, regional and local levels – to encourage them to handle the property problems facing many British nationals in an appropriate and timely manner.” Lawyer Gerardo Vazquez, of Mojacar’s Vazquez Estudio Juridico, said: “This is a break-through and a victory for common sense and justice. A lot remains to be done though. We are now seeking a change in Spanish state planning law and continue to seek changes in the regional planning law, as well as the Regularisation Decree – all of which appear to be on the cards. “I do not think that these changes would have been made without the tenacity of the few. Indeed, were it not for the few, none of these changes would have been made.” Mr Vazquez said it showed what people could do when they formed a group, got organised, and strived for justice – and if more people protested change would be more quickly achieved, avoiding a lot of pain and suffering. He added: “I feel it is real democracy when people abandon their apathy, think of themselves and others, join together and fight for, if not human rights, than just plain common sense.” Charles Svoboda, of AUN which fights for the rights of property owners

and the environment, said the group had been “fully in the picture” and had provided advice and some financial support to colleagues further south and put the AUAN in contact with Gerardo Vazquez at an early stage. He said the main credit belonged to Maura Hillen, Mr Vazquez and those working alongside the. “So of course we applaud the substantial, if not complete, success with the Cortes in Madrid. It took a lot of commitment to the cause on the part of AUAN. PROTECTION “Time will tell how this works in terms of protecting those who buy or build new homes in the belief that all is in order when it may not be, thanks to the unclear and often conflicting lines of authority in many regions.” And Charles said it was unclear to the degree home owners like Len and Helen Prior might now get compensation rather than “hollow promises” – the couple saw their Almeria home demolished in 2008. “This decision will have important implications for places here in Valencia, such as Montroi, Catral, Lliber,
and other situations where those who bought in good faith have been seriously duped I significant numbers.” Adrian Hobbs, from Lliber and President of AULN – another affiliated group – said members were very pleased compensation would be paid to victims. “While it will help people sleep a little easier at night, the situation in Lliber is still unresolved more than 10 years since nearly 300 families were lured into purchasing homes in good faith on the basis of signed building licences from the local town hall,” he said. He said almost two thirds of the property still remained unlicensed on rustic land and still required a General Plan to change the status of the land “and therefore its legality and ultimate safety of the homes.” Adrian said current Mayor Pepe Juan Reus had made great progress but “the job remains unfinished”. He said over the years election promises remained unfulfilled. “No doubt the forthcoming elections will bring out some new promises to an electorate already weary of political spin.”
Noses grow on you! Stylists suddenly sprouted red noses and matching tutus for the occasion
by Jack Troughton COMIC RELIEF’s ‘Red Nose Day’ was celebrated in style at the Justin hairdressing and beauty salon in Moraira last Friday with some timely fund raising. Stylists suddenly sprouted red noses and matching tutus for the occasion and the day became, well, rather a hoot(er). Team Justin spent days hard at work in the kitchen baking to offer cakes and coffee to clients in return for a donation and even went far and wide around the streets to attract custom. By the time the salon closed, they had raised 260€ for Make A Smile, a charity supporting the children cared for in family units at EMAUS homes across the region. Comic Relief launched Red Nose Day in 1988. Staged every two years, this year, in tandem with the BBC, more than £78 million
was raised in the UK – taking the overall total to more than £1 billion. Chiropodist Lisa Fox said everyone had wanted to do something for comic relief 2015 and it was felt the salon was the perfect place because it was busy and in the centre of the village. “We thought we would all bake a cake to sell and raise some money for the children,” she said. “Our customers have joined in and people have been coming in from the street – we have even dragged some people in. “We have also been going round Moraira wearing our noses and tutus to get more people to contribute. “It’s something we thought we could do to support the community here and have a bit of fun!” All 12 members of Team Justin took part and the red noses were specially imported for the occasion – purchased in Sainsbury’s.

A Spanish fairytale by Jack Troughton THE FIRST reported ‘fairy door’ has mysteriously appeared on the Costa Blanca this week – the little people possibly fleeing persecution in the UK. A woodland trust in Somerset launched a crackdown on the practice of nailing the tiny doors to trees as homes for fairies – saying they were spoiling the magic of the woods. Far from trustees being away with the fairies, the ongoing controversy has made headline news with the likes of the BBC, Daily Telegraph, Guardian and Independent reporting on the clash. And RTN can reveal a small decorated and perfectly formed wooden fairy door has now appeared on a tree trunk at the side of Cabo la Nao in Javea’s Arenal. The trust conserving Wayford Woods in Crewkerne, Somerset, launched its curb on the “profusion of elfin construction” after matter got out of hand and hundreds of fairy doors appeared – many brightly coloured and said to be more at home in Barbie world than a fairy grotto. Trustee Steven Acreman said he was not “anti-fairy” and said the first door was a charming wooden construction, fitting perfectly into the trunk of a tree and opened to reveal a little bed. “It is a very complex situation and nobody’s admitting that they are evicting the fairies. It’s just that fairy control is required, otherwise we would be covered in fairy doors.”
Eclipse on Friday
However, fairy doors at Wayford Woods and other woodland, including the New Forest, have become a major attraction for families, children encouraged to leave notes for the fairies, posting them at the doors. ELFIN Countries across Europe have their own names for the little people and legends concerning elfin folk – traditions dating back to less complex times. It has also become big business, companies offering them for sale – up market department store Harvey Nichols stocks them - to fix on trees and to skirting boards in the home to encourage “a bit of magic” for youngsters. Presenter Auntie Noelle of Bay Radio, very much a pro-fairy person, discovered the Javea fairy door after featuring the plight of the Somerset fairies on her radio show. “I came across the story about 10 days ago and have followed it ever since – it is making big news in the UK,” she said. “I am sure the fairies heard the story on the radio and having been evicted from Somerset decided to move to warmer climes. “I hope the Javea fairy door means there will be a new population of fairies here in Spain, I think Spain is a fairy friendly country.” She added: “I think the fairies are rather too shy to get in touch...do I believe in them? Absolutely!” Anyone who spots a new fairy door is asked to photograph it and send a copy to Noelle at noelle@bayradio.fm

IN BETWEEN a few showers and grey skies that have been forecast for today, on Friday 20th March, there will be a partial eclipse of the sun that’s visible in Spain. If you’ve picked up your copy of the RTN early enough, here’s where you may wish to go to experience it safely, for yourself. For those of any age, who would like to know more or to experience this phenomena, Torrevieja’s Department of Youth and the Centre for Information and Youth (CIAJ), in collaboration with the Mastral Project and Astroingeo of Alicante, has organized an activity where you can experience this first hand. The place to be is on the Paseo Marítimo Juan Aparicio, opposite the Montebianco cafeteria from 9am. There you can see the eclipse safely through the use of special filters, goggles and indirect methods, to ensure you don’t harm your eyes. This morning, the moon will hide up to 60% of the sun. The eclipse will begin at 9:04am and end at 11:18am with the optimum viewing time being 10:08am, this being the maximum time of eclipse. This time the eclipse will be total in parts of northern Europe and in Spain, the Faroe Islands. The last partial eclipse seen in the local region was in November 2013 and the next will be in 2021, but to see one equal or better compared to today’s, we will have to wait until 2026. The Mastral Project and Astroingeo Association emphasize the importance of using eye protection at all times, and that damage to the eye trying to see the eclipse can be irreversible and even cause blindness. It’s very important not to look directly at the sun, and especially important not to look through cameras, as the magnification of the solar rays, can be extremely harmful to the naked eye, and even good sunglasses may not be of help. You can find more information about this eclipse on the web at: www.eclipse.eltiempoentorrevieja.es.

Bikers unite across the water HARLEY DAVIDSON motorcycle owners on the Costa Blanca answered a call from biker Kevin Sutcliffe to help pay his respects to best friend Henry ‘Frank’ Morgan Jr. at a ‘Celebration of Life’ in Texas. by Jack Troughton Members of the Costa Blanca Espana Harley Davidson Group joined Kevin in sending a special message of remembrance to the United States – a photo and message to be displayed at the ceremony. The gesture underlined just how small a place the world has become for bikers who join the international band of brothers formed by Harley owners. Kevin, a member of the Cut and Shoot Harley Owners Group Chapter in the ‘Lone Star State’, had been grieving for Frank, who died in a motorbike accident in January. Currently living in Polop, his trauma was compounded by the fact his return flight to the USA, scheduled for 31st March meant he could not take part a massive gathering of Harley bikers and their friends in Texas 10 days earlier.
RESPECT The celebration of Frank’s life – including a memorial ride on the powerful machines in traditional biker style – is aimed at showing his family just how much he Kevin was thought of and respected. and Instead, Kevin contacted the Costa Blanca Espana Harley Davidson Group and Angela Sutcliffe asked if they could join him at the special with photo call – and naturally group directors Costa were proud to stand united. Surely the EU must step in
JUST WHEN you think that you have heard it all, along comes some lunatic from the Department of Works and Pensions who decides against the well-known and established scientific facts about how our planet rotates around the sun, to extend winter by two months in order to exclude all expat destinations from the winter fuel payment. For centuries, our seasons have been set and governed by the Summer and Winter solstice, and the Spring and Autumn Equinox, (i.e., winter solstice is around 21st December and signifies the onset of Winter, Spring equinox is around 21st March and signifies the onset of Spring, Summer solstice is around 21st June and signifies the onset of summer, and Autumn equinox is around 21st September and signifies onset of Autumn). So, if winter is now five months, does that mean spring only lasts one month? And I suppose the next act of the DWP is to slow our planet’s orbit between the winter solstice and the spring equinox to allow for the extra two months, then speed it up again as spring is only one month and the planet must get between the spring equinox and summer solstice in this short time? Surely the EU must step in and prevent this laughable situation where the DWP is trying to punish pensioners who are exercising their rights, under EU law, to reside in a member state. Chris Smith, Alicante
Close the loophole Excellent MAY I add this much to this very real fraud-risk story, so that readers may be wiser before the fact rather than ¨twice shy¨. The German mentioned may well be the same who cons people into renting their furnished flat only to find he´s changed the ¨motura¨ lock and departed with the moveable contents, without having paid anything but the deposit which the agent takes! I am not surprised to read of one looking for money for a locksmith! And yes, to ask for money is not an offence under Spanish law, and neither is changing the ¨mottura¨ IF you are the tenant,
not having to PROVE to a locksmith that you are the legal owner of the property! Beware of this legal loophole even though your lease may clearly state that nothing may be done to the property by the tenant without the written permission of the owner; for some reason this is totally ignored by locksmiths, who may not even ask to see the lease. I think the property board in Spain (is there one?) should push for a total closure of this loophole so as to make it illegal for anyone to order a front-door lock to be changed without proof of express authority to do so. Jen
I felt I had to write in praise of Dr Hans Christian Madsen of the Benijofar Chiropractic Clinic and to let your readers know of the marvellous work he does. I have been nearly crippled with arthritis in both hips and my right foot, but after treatment with his unique lasers and shockwave I am now walking freely and better than I have done in three years (for which my two dogs are grateful!) I urge anyone with joint or muscular pain to visit him and take advantage of his years of experience and unique custom built laser therapy. I guarantee you will not be disappointed. Quick to hear, slow to speak IT IS wonderful to hear the Mayor of Torrevieja, Edúrado Dolon is giving a big listening ear to hear the questions voiced by expats. It shows a person’s character to want to hear rather than just wanting to be heard. Be quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger are wise words to live by. Some of the answers are not what some want to hear, but hey, such is life. How many times do we get answers we would prefer not to hear. We wish the Mayor very good success in responding to hearing legitimate concerns from the citizens of Torrevieja. Joan Ashmore, Benijofor

winning Coventry Male Voice Choir. And the choir will perform with special guest, Torrevieja soprano Alyson Horsfall, who will sing solo and with the men to help provide tow entertaining concerts. Students bring Harvest home
by Jack Troughton THE WALKERS enjoyed spectacular views of the Marina Alta mountains around the village and needed a torch to negotiate a short tunnel and also had to take care crossing a dry river bed. The event was blessed with spring weather and at journey’s end, the walkers all enjoyed a three-course lunch and wine at Restaurante Tormos. U3A Marina Baixa holds its general meetings on the fourth Monday of the month at the Casa de Cultura in Alfaz del Pi. The next is on Monday morning at 11am (23rd March) – new faces are always made welcome. And because there are now so many members it is impossible to ‘sign in’ everyone in 30 minutes, so doors open at 10am and people are asked to arrive early and take a seat. To find out more about the association visit www.u3amarinabaixa. com or contact Secretary Joan Flint on 96 586 1226 or 663 637 167.

FUND RAISING at Xabia International College provided 322€ for the Harvest Store Charity in Javea – helping put food on tables for people suffering in the ongoing economic crisis. Teacher Peter Cox and colleagues from the Harvest Store attended a special assembly at the school to accept the donation, the money raised at a Carnival Day and a Valentines Disco. Peter outlined how every Euro donated to the charity went to support families in need in the Javea area through difficult times. And the occasion marked another illustration of how XIC integrated and supported the local community. Head of Secondary Fiona Phillips presents the money to Peter, Ruth and Mike of the Harvest store.
Golfers chip in for Cancer Care
GOLFER MIKE Cuerden picked Cancer Care Javea as his charity during the 12 months as Captain of Levante Golf Society and with the support of members raised 1,000€. Mike presented a cheque to Maggie Mackenzie, a key member of the charity’s fund raising committee last Friday at Oliva Nova Golf Club. And Mike said: “I had no hesitation in choosing Cancer Care Javea. We all know of people affected by cancer and the charity helps to do amazing work in the field of research, treatment, and care in Mike and Maggie with the cheque the community.”

Dynamic Dog Day Night for Little Pods
Remembering the Few by Jack Troughton PLANS ARE being finalised along the Costa Blanca to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain – one of the most important periods in the history of the RAF. Wartime leader Sir Winston Churchill spoke the immortal words - “Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few” – at a time the RAF was fighting
the pivotal air battle against the German Luftwaffe in 1940. And on 15th September the North Costa Blanca Branch of the Royal Air Forces Association will hold a special dinner dance and auction to mark the special anniversary that helped turn the tide of war in favour of the Allies. Details of the celebration will be published nearer the date but RAFA is appealing for donations of items linked to the air force or aviation in general to go

Proceeds from the sale will be given to the association’s Annual Wings Appeal – a fund providing much-needed welfare support to serving and exserving members of the RAF and their dependents. The RAFA branch hopes people living in the Denia, Javea and Calpe area would be prepared to give items that can be auctioned. Please call 634 439 662.

Worth their weight in euros by Keith Nicol CASA MIA Bar-Restaurant in El Chapparal has again raised money for AECC in Torrevieja. The Weigh-In group that meets at the bar has raised a considerable amount for the charity but now Mark Daughtry, the owner of the bar, has raised an equally valuable €375 by running in the recent Torrevieja Half-Marathon. Sponsorship money was shared with the S.A.T animal rescue charity, with AECC’s share being handed to AECC Hospital Volunteer Ann Bissett. A large bag of uncounted coins was also handed over at the same time, but the amount of that is unknown at the present time. Thanks go to Mark, his generous sponsors and the anonymous donor of the coins.

Pupils from nursery to the sixth form at the Javea school enjoyed the fun and had the chance to see themselves in the finished version along with their teachers. Juan, who makes a blog about education and schools in the Valencia region, was very complementary about XIC’s happy atmosphere and the enthusiasm of students and staff. Playa Flamenca’s Ex-Student Success at ‘The BAFTAs’ by Keith Nicol IT’S ALWAYS great to hear about a success story from the Costa Blanca. Philip Toft contacted RTN to say: “My Granddaughter Lucy Nicole Rogers was educated here on the Orihuela Costa since the age of 4. She graduated in 2014 from IES Playa Flamenca School with a High School Certificate qualification. She applied to study Level 3 Photography at Huntingdon College Cambridgeshire, and commenced her first year in September 2014.” Lucy’s talent has been recognised by the school already and was one of four students selected by her tutor to attend the BAFTAs in Covent Garden, London. Lucy fought off competition from more than 1,000 other photographers fighting for position on the red carpet. This experience has given her a first real taste of working in the media business and life as a press photographer. Local newspapers in Huntingdon and Cambridge were contacted and ran articles of Lucy’s work at the BAFTAs, selecting several of her photographs for their publications. Among those Lucy photographed that found their way into print included photos of Eddie Redmayne, who won the BAFTA and an OSCAR at the 87th

Stocking a new garden
by
Dick Handscombe Holistic gardener and author
BEFORE RUSHING out to fill the boot with boxes of new plants review the degree of risk that you are willing to accept in planting up your garden or apartment terrace containers. For instance: Only take risks with subtropical or tropical plants if you can provide the necessary localised microclimate. If necessary only plant delicate plants in containers and take them into a glazed terrace or greenhouse for the winter, or treat them as expendable annuals or biennials being very grateful if they do over winter well. Only plant the most frost resistant varieties of bougainvilleas (the purple flowering), hibiscus (reds), bignonias(orange flowering) and lantanas ( purple ground cover and orange ‘bandera’ bushes). Having decided on your general planting strategy follow the following guidelines. Select plants that match the style of garden and recognise how large a mature plant will become within 2, 5 and 10 years. Plant only healthy plants whether you purchase plants, or propagate your own. Select and purchase strong healthy plants that show no sign of disease or infestations, have a good shape with strong joins between the branches and trunk, and have a good root ball in relation to the size of the growth above the soil. If a plant is top heavy the small root structure may struggle to extract sufficient moisture and nutrients from the soil to support the super structure when planted in the harsher conditions of the average garden to those in a propagating house. We therefore often prefer to buy a smaller balanced plant and bring it on at a realistic rate in the garden. Have plenty of new unopened flower buds. We prefer to
purchase a plant with just one or two open flowers in order to check the colour but with many buds that will open later in our garden - unless we need instant colour as in-fills for a special occasion If you buy a plant in full flower with few oncoming buds it will soon finish flowering as the plants priority when first planted in the garden will be to put down roots. Yes many garden centres do market plants in full flower but some now charge more for well budded but as yet un-flowered plants than those in full flower. Have good supporting canes and ties which have not started to rub or cut into the bark. This is especially important when selecting tall shrubs and trees. Do not buy plants that show signs of being: seriously wind or frost burnt, seriously root bound (however if buying a tree there is an advantage if strong roots have grown through the bottom of the container into the soil beneath.), very recent propagations, as yet without good root structures. This is especially important with climbers sold in very small pots, strangled by tight mini plastic propagating nets or meshes, signs of being stressed by heat, or of being allowed to dry out, waterlogged and therefore perhaps susceptible to fungal diseases. Harden off hothouse annuals before planting out. When buying something unusual check that the garden centre can tell you how to care for the plant. If not, ask them to find out before you buy. If the garden centre does not have the variety or colour of flower you want ask if they can order it for you. If not try another garden centre. When purchasing very large plants such as palms or old olive trees check that the garden centre is able to deliver and plant for you at a reasonable cost. If you are building up a collection of plants search widely for good and unusual plants. Good plants can often be
purchased at weekly markets and gardening clubs as well as at gardening centres. And of course swap cuttings for propagation or already rooted cuttings with friends. If plants seem expensive check at a number of other places. Prices can vary widely. If you buy a large expensive succulent or perennial consider immediately taking cuttings to propagate another five, ten or even twenty plants for planting out in a few months time to create a mass effect. Recognise that unlike most other purchases no warranty normally comes with plants. Few outlets will readily replace plants that die. When your garden is fully planted ensure that the unplanned impromptu purchase of a special/unusual plant that catches your eye can be fitted in by replacing an existing plant, re-planning part of the garden, or adding yet another pot to a mounting collection. Remember that every additional pot increases your daily summer watering!

Carpets for every room in the house A RUG can be a statement piece in a living room, or source of softness and warmth. However they should also be practical where you need to use them. MANY YEARS ago more than likely you would of bought a carpet in a specialised rugs shop and odds are it would have been made from wool. Wool is one of the best fibers for making rugs and carpets. It makes high durability flooring, with some other great advantages. Such as a naturaly flame retardant, it assits in stabilizing humidity in a room. It has great insulation properties not only for warmth but also noise. It s a natural product and can be more ecofriendly than synthetic fibers. Also wool carpets are naturally dirt resistant. Wool rugs can be great for living rooms or hallways, but they do have their disadvantages if you wanted to use them in bathrooms, kitchens, bedrooms and even living rooms. Price can be a large factor when purchasing a carpet and wool rugs are more expensive than rugs made from man made fibers. Plus synthetic rugs have advanced greatly, now they come with stain resitant finishes. They are water resistant which in turn help stop mould growth, synthetic made rugs are
anti-allergenic much better for baby’s rooms or any one suffering from allergys. Another benefit is they resist colour fade from sun light much better than wool. So we would recommend if you were buying a rug for the kitchen or doorway for it to be made of synthetic fibers, preferably with a non slip backing. You can wash these rugs easily and serve for a safer stepping surface, usually retailing from 5,95€. Another room that’s best with a non-slip rug can be the bathroom, microfiber pile is very absorbent, washes brilliantly and dries very fast. The synthetic fiber pile will resist moisture in a bathroom and not run its color, plus the value of these sort of bathroom rugs are very reasonable, for example two of them for 16€. At Leos SoftFurnishings Superstore we sell hallway carpets made in Spain in lengths of 2m, 3 and 4 meters and prices start from 30€. For your bedrooms nice warm wool pile rugs, even sheepskins would look great but we can say the feel of long pile rug on your feet is
just as good, better value with some great offers on all year round. Plus with an adapting range there is more choice than ever. A design in color or cut out pattern, weaved rug, long pile, short pile, any style for every room in your house, we believe choice and knowledge is the best way to help our customers. Don’t put off buying a area rug for your living room, there is nothing better to give that welcome home enviornment, winter, spring or summer. Rugs define a space and add softness. Our staff have great friendly advice and the knowledge to help any one. Phone for more info on 965 48 48 48 or find them on facebook LEOS SOFTFURNISHINGS

Did you lose money investing in Bankia’s shares? You can get your money back. ALMOST DAILY now there are new court judgments from audiences all over Spain: Madrid, Valencia, Oviedo, ruling against Bankia, in complaints from consumers who purchased Bankia shares (stock) after its initial public offering (IPO). MANY COURTS understand that investors who bought shares (before knowing the real situation of Bankia) did so on the basis of information provided by Bankia, mainly in the prospectus, which was absolutely wrong and did not reflect the real situation of the financial entity. Proof of this fact is highlighted in that shortly after its IPO, in 2012, the accounts were reformulated and the authorities had to bail out the bank. Moreover, as published in the press, experts of Bank of Spain concluded in their reports that Bankia’s accounts did not reflect a true picture of the entity. THOSE WHO CAN SUE OR CLAIM. In principle Bankia could be claimed against by all those who bought shares until approximately May 2012, when the accounts of Bankia were redone and the real financial situation was known. (shareholders, and also those who sold their shares at a loss). DEADLINE TO SUE OR CLAIM. Although the deadline to claim is not clear, it is advisable to sue before three years, starting from May 2012, i.e. before May 2015.
AMOUNT TO BE CLAIMED. In principle one could claim for the amount of the investment, or the damage caused by the investment. LEGAL BASIS FOR THE CLAIM. Revocation or cancellation of the shares purchase due to lack of consent, as the investors agreed to buy based on data provided, which was not true and correct. Contractual liability (malpractice) could also be claimed against Bankia. Also liability for the wrong information contained in the prospectus published. THOSE INTERESTED IN CLAIMING, SHOULD PREPARE THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTS: Copies of receipt or documentation relating to the subscription, purchase order of the Bankia shares, etc.
The information provided in this article is not intended to be legal advice, but merely conveys general information related to legal issues. White & Baos Abogados. Tel:+34 966 426 185. Any other documentation from or to the bank, such as convenience and suitability test, previous claims, correspondence (emails, letters ...), etc. Proof if you did not receive any formal further/ higher education Bank statements that show the performance of the Bankia shares, at least the latest one. Summary of other products you contracted with the entity, any contract signed with the bank, etc. We believe that the chances of getting back the investment are high. BFA, the parent company of Bankia, recently announced that they have reserved 468 million euros to meet the liabilities from Bankia’s IPO in 2011, and Bankia had also reserved another 312 million euros, to cover this same liability. This announcement looks almost like a tacit acknowledgment of their responsibility. If you find yourself in this situation, contact us.

Crackdown on financial crime
by
Christina Brady
Regional Manager of Blacktower Costa Blanca
IT WAS announced in the press this week that HSBC is closing the Jersey bank accounts of foreign customers as part of a crackdown on financial crime, including money laundering and tax evasion. THE SCANDAL-hit lender is writing to thousands of clients with ‘onshore’ bank accounts, which are only meant to be held by people living in Jersey or with links to the Channel Islands tax haven. Customers are being told to attend local branches with their passport and address details or their accounts may be closed. The bank said at the moment it is not writing to clients of its HSBC Expat division who hold offshore bank accounts in Jersey. But a spokesman said: ‘We continuously review details we hold on all our customers to ensure we have the information we need to protect them, together with wider society, against fraud and other financial crime.’ Over the last year I have a number of expatriate clients who have had bank accounts in Jersey ,Guernsey
and Gibraltar (to name just a few places) for numerous years who have suddenly found their accounts are being closed and they are being asked to give a bank account for the funds to be paid into. No explanation has been given and usually less than a months’ notice. Not only are Banks now worried about being accused of tax evasion but with all the quantative easing that has gone on and cheap money from the central banks, plus low interest rates in the UK and Europe they just don’t need or want your money. What else is on offer you may ask yourself, well there are various tax efficient options from an instant access 100% capital guaranteed account, to a cautious 5 year investment allowing up to 5% income to be taken a year to the more traditional 5 year investment which allows flexible withdrawals and for the
more experienced and adventurous investors there are Structured Notes available paying a coupon of between 8% and 10% per annum. Whatever your risk appetite there should be something to suit, it’s just a matter of obtaining independent
professional advice. If you would like to look at the investment options available to you please contact me by email christina.brady@blacktowerfm.com or call me on 658 892 330 to arrange a meeting.

The Sound of Julie making with the funnies!
Quote of “the Week
“

Jeremy Clarkson LAST WEEK Julie Andrews appeared on Good Morning America to talk about the 50th anniversary of The Sound of Music, and to express her amazement at how raged at his victim Bob old the film was she said “I think it’s a joke, I think someone pulled a fast one on Ward “You’ll be on the me, I lost twenty years somewhere, surely it’s only been thirty years!” dole tomorrow; I’m When asked about how the films popularity has kept going generation after going to make generation she said “Well every seven years there’s a new generation, but the film sure you will not has to be good to last that long! It’s got children and nuns and beautiful scenery, somewhere in there is the secret,” yep! We´ll all go with that Julie. have a job! … Julie went on to explain how The Sound of Music has become an integral part IDIOT! of her life when she reflected “like this morning, I bumped into it, it’s like an old friend, the pleasure of making it and the friendship with the children and Christopher Plummer continues, I see him a lot, and the children are always in some contact one Charlie Sheen had one last mega-rant to aim at Chuck way or another.” Then when the presenter asked Julie about Lady GaGa who paid Lorre last week on the way he was treated when ´Two and tribute to the film at the Oscars she retorted “A new friend! Yes! I’ve always been a fan, a Half Men´ ended last month. What Lorre did was had a when she finishes what she´s doing I think I´ve found a new friend.”The show concluded Charlie lookalike being crushed by a baby grand piano! when other guest, journalist Diane Sawyer, whom Julie made a trip to Austria with and Charlie´s words were “To go that low, to be that imto visit the places where the film was shot, did a little dance whilst singing mature, in my face, really? You must feel safe where you live ´Do Re Mi,´ to which Julie quipped “you were on the wrong mother****er! “ Ahem! steps and everything, but you get an A for effort.” I give you Julie Andrews; a lady who´s clearly learned the art of selfdeprivation. If you are a little young to have seen Walt Disney’s cartoon movie ´Dumbo, ´ do everything you can to see it, as you will fall in love with the flying elephant just like everyone that’s seen it has. Walt Disney made the original movie 74 years ago and now director Tim Burton has been brought in to bring us the story of the elephant that could fly because of his big ears ... Get it Right Tim! Episode 5 of Ch4´s series ´Indian Summers´ will be broadcast on Sunday evening, and if you missed the first 4 episodes, then do your best to watch them on catch up TV. It’s the story of the final days of British rule in India and has a superlative cast headed by the wonderful Julie Walters. Ch4 loved it so much that after just 3 episodes they commissioned a second series. Get pushing those buttons!

Bad friend
Is this going anywhere?
I am 17. I have known my friend since we were at school. She has never been particularly nice, and lately I discovered she has been gossiping about me. She talked me out of applying for a job recently, and then applied for it herself. I really don’t want her in my life any more, but in the past, when I have tried to break friends, she has managed to talk me around for old times sake.
In all honesty, I would say this woman has used you, and only when you are flush with money is she interested in picking up where the relationship left off. Don’t throw good money after bad. My advice is to cut your losses, and look for a woman who is more down to earth if you want a more lasting relationship.
There is no reason for anyone to have someone in their life who means them harm. You could tell her face to face that your friendship is over, or if you don’t think you are able to do this, send her an email. Then, it is down to you to hold firm, and not respond to her pleas of getting back together. She has proved herself to be a bad friend in the past, and you would be much better off without her. As you go through life, you will meet people, who really deserve to be called ‘friend‘. This girl does not.
I have been seeing a woman for several years. In the past two years, she has cooled off, and seems only interested in seeing me when I am able to spend vast amounts of money on her, and show her a good time. I think she’s a real knockout, and I feel proud to have her on my arm. I spent all my savings on wining and dining her, and now have nothing left. This was about the time she lost interest. I also suspect, from reading her Facebook page, that she is seeing other men, and doing exactly the same with them. My friends say she is using me. Is this relationship going anywhere?

Coffee lovers guide...
THE SPANISH drink a lot of coffee but not much tea - this is especially evident if you ever go into an electrical store to purchase an electric kettle. There will be row upon row of coffee machines but probably a choice of two kettles. Still, as the saying goes, when in Rome... Here are the most common choices of coffee: Cafe Solo - Equivalent to an Espresso: a small, very strong black coffee Cafe con Leche - Half cafe solo and half hot milk Cafe Bombon - A small glass containing condensed milk with cafe solo: very sweet! Cafe Americano - Large black coffee Cafe Cortado - Cafe solo with a drop of milk Cafe con Hielo - Pronounced ‘yello’ and mostly drunk in the Summer time, this is cold, iced coffee. You will be served a normal coffee and be bought a separate glass with ice - then you pour the coffee over it Cafe Sombra - (or Cafe Manchado) is mostly milk with a few drops of coffee Cafe Carajillo - A cafe solo served with a shot of brandy... obviously a very popular choice! You will witness most builders having one for breakfast and the price is far cheaper than a Starbucks frothy milk concoction in the UK! If you want de-caffeinated then ask for ‘descafeinado’ - most places will have it.

tech Printing flight details HI AUNTY: I’m trying to print my “e-mailed Monarch Flight details “. Each time I print it, I only get about two thirds of the flight details. My folders list is on the left of the page, then I have a grey margin, and in the centre I have the flight details, which I need to print. To the right of my flight details is a grey margin, and to right of that, is a margin with adverts. But, when I print, I’m left with the right hand third, plus the adverts missing. I must mention that the printed text is larger than it should be. I have reduced the text from 100% to 50 and 75 but to no avail. Also, I have printed a test document from ‘favourites’, and it came out normal. Any suggestions? Many thanks -Tom. Aunty says: Hi - If you are using an “online” email service, like Hotmail, then you choose print from within Hotmail, not from the browser. If you use the browser print option, you will print off the screen page, and not just the required email. Hence why you are getting all your folder options, and not the whole email in the printed document.

Removing programmes Hello Aunty Virus: Can you please help me to remove some programmes? I have tried to uninstall but they refuse to let me, the programmes are: ‘istartsurf and flashbeat’. I tried to download kickass free films downloads and these just seemed to latch on to my PC - I then tried to download and install ‘spyhunter’ but was again unsuccessful as I found that ‘binkiland’ had installed itself on my PC. Hoping you can help. Barry Aunty says: Someone else had problems with istartsurf late last year, and these are the instructions I sent her, which she followed and successfully removed it from her PC: istartsurf has installed itself onto your PC, probably during installing “free” software. First you need to go to programs in control panel and uninstall anything that was installed around at the same time - “free” programs can install many things that you may not want. Next, in your browsers check the addons and extensions for istartsurf, and any other potential rogue addons. Next, go into the “search providers” section in your browsers, and remove any unwanted search engines listed. Finally, on all your browser icons that you click to open your browser, right click and go to properties. On the shortcut tab, extra code may have been added to open up istartsurf whenever you click on the icon. So delete any code that looks like “www.iStartsurf.com/?utm” that appears after the “iexploer.exe” or “chrome.exe” You may want to check the properties for all your browsers for this extra code. Then download and update and run Antimalware bytes, which will scan and hopefully remove any further traces of this. Response: I did follow as you advised but in some cases I couldn’t do exactly as you said but the end result was the same (I hope) as I cannot see this programme anywhere also the programme and its links do not show on the uninstall window.
Outlook 2007 address book DEAR AUNTY: Running Windows 7 and Outlook 2007, I used to open the address book and see all the entries. Now I just get a search box. It was really useful to see all the entries, if only to jog my memory of entries I should contact or delete. Is there any way of getting this facility back? Martin Aunty says: When I open the address book in Office 2007 I get a search option, and my list of contacts. I have an option to change what is shown: Outlook Address Book, or Contacts. Changing this changes what is displayed in the bottom area. So if you have ‘Address Book’ selected, perhaps your emails are all located in ‘Contacts’ - so change the option. In Tools / Options you can select what is shown as the default - Address Book or Contacts.

spanish
Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin
Never no one, nothing HELLO AGAIN! Well we are going to start the New Year with a break from verbs. What? I hear you say. You mean there are other things in Spanish apart from verbs? Indeed there are, and although I am feeling fairly optimistic about the year ahead (don’t ask me why) this subject is actually about being negative. Yes, our subject today is being negative, but not just that boring old “no” that we can place before verbs to turn them around “tengo” (I have) “no tengo” (I don’t have), and so on. Instead we are going to look at the Spanish for never, no one or nobody, and nothing. The Spanish for “never” is “nunca”, and we will use this to illustrate how these negative words function in sentences. Basically, you have two options, you can either start a phrase or sentence with them as follows: “Nunca he visto una cosa igual” (I’ve never seen anything like it!) “Nunca” in this position sounds emphatic, and so lends itself to this kind of exclamation. If we want to use “nunca” less emphatically we have to put it later in the sentence but create what we call in English a double-negative. “No he visto eso nunca”. We’re back to the use of “no” at the beginning and if we try to translate word for word we end up with “I haven’t never seen that”, which of course is not at all correct in English. In Spanish though, it is the principle way we express our negatives,
with “no” before the verb and the other negative word later in the sentence. Exactly the same thing occurs with “no one” which is “nadie”. We can say “Nadie vino” (Nobody or no one came) or we can express exactly the same idea with “no vino nadie” which just sound slightly less emphatic. “Nothing” is “nada” and we can illustrate this with a very common phrase that is often taught as an item of “survival” Spanish – “no pasa nada”. Again if we were to be horribly literal we would translate this as “nothing doesn’t happen”, but of course it should have just the one negative in English, giving us “nothing happens”. The phrase could mean exactly that, as in the sentence: “Nothing happens in this village.” “En este pueblo no pasa nada”. However, it is far more commonly heard as a response to some kind of apology or expression of discomfort from another person, the equivalent of our “don’t worry” or “nothing’s the matter”. I say: “Perdón” (Excuse me) and you reply “No pasa nada”. We can also use “nada” in some contexts to mean “at all”, as in “no me gusta nada” (I don’t like it at all). If we want to be even more emphatic about our dislike of something, we can also say “no me gusta en absoluto”. This sounds positive but in fact it is a negative phrase. I can’t think how to translate that extra emphasis, other than by becoming suddenly Irish “I don’t like it at all, at all, at all”.

Another little negative thing you might like to know is “neither … nor” which is “ni …. ni”, although we don’t always express ourselves the same way in English. For example: “No me gusta ni la carne ni los huevos” (I don’t like meat or eggs – I like neither meat nor eggs). I do like eggs by the way, it was just an example. If we focus on the most common, everyday uses of these negative words though, it is remarkable that they are frequently used entirely on their own – often as responses. “¿Has estado en Nueva York?” “Nunca”. (Have you been to New York? Never) “¿Quién vino a la reunión?” “Nadie” (Who came to the meeting? No one) “¿Qué te pasa?” “Nada” (What’s the matter with you? Nothing). “Nada” is the ultimate one-worder and is used in many ways. Sometimes it abbreviates “de nada” (not at all). “Muchas gracias” “Nada”. Sometimes it is used at the beginning of long explanations (for some strange reason). A reporter says: “Cuéntanos qué paso” (Tell us what happened) and the interviewee starts his long detailed account with: “Nada. El avión se despegó y ….” (Nothing. The aeroplane took off and ….”) Finally, you can finish off a conversation with “pues, nada” (well, nothing) which can also be abbreviated to “nada”. Nada. Hasta la semana que viene.
Campoverde Canine Club ESTABLISHED IN Spain in July 2000, the Campoverde Canine Club is still going strong teaching dogs, and their owners, all aspects of obedience, with plenty of fun along the way. The new classes will begin very shortly with the final examinations taking place at the training ground of the C.C.C. in Campoverde. The winner from the Basic Class was Alison MacTavish, all the way from Bonny Scotland, and Magnus, her cross Schnauzer/Terrier. Well done to you both for scoring 108.5 marks out of 110. Patience and perseverance works wonders. In second place was Neelam Darar and her Cocker Spaniel “Indy”, scoring 106.3 marks. The Intermediate Class was won by Eva Olsson and her flying toy poodle “Polly”. Even at this early stage I have high hopes for Polly especially in the Agility exercises. Scoring a credible 125 / 140 points, Polly just held off the challenge of Tracy Storer and “Charlie” ( 122.7 points) and the class character “Alfie” the Jack Russell and his handler Susan Beckett (121.9 points) The Advanced Class winner was a runaway win for Heather Powell and her G.S.D. “Rebel”. Scoring 133.9 out of 140 was a real achievement for Heather and her somewhat immature and playful dog. It just goes to show what can be done with dedication. The Agility Class covering a total of ten different obstacles was mastered by “Bailey”, handled by his more than competent owner, Pat Frewin. Sometimes it appears that “Bailey” finds that the jumps are all too easy. All jumps were marked on ability and control and to achieve 95 out of 100 marks shows the effort Pat has consistently put into the training exercises. Have YOU had your Free hearing check up with GAES yet?
If not, why not call your nearest clinic today? In order to raise awareness about the importance of detecting hearing problems, GAES Hearing Centres are offering readers a hearing check up absolutely free, at any of their GAES centres. Regular Hearing check ups offer the best protection to maintain hearing and should be taken as often as visual or dental examinations. From age 55, yearly check ups are recommended. Recently we have asked one of GAES hearing specialists, Vanessa, (hearing specialist in the Torrevieja clinic of GAES, Spain’s leading Hearing Specialists) to explain the clinic’s hearing examination offered to readers. Hi Vanessa, could you let our readers know where your clinic is located in Torrevieja, and where do your clients usually live? Of course. The clinic is located in Calle Ramon Gallud, no 52, near the Ayuntamiento de Torevieja (Town Hall). We have regular english clients from as far as San Fulgencio-la Marina, Guardamar, Orihuela Costa y and all the close towns right up to Caregena. How long have you worked for Gaes? I have been working in GAES since 2003, as a qualified professional specialist in Audiology and Audio Protethis.
Do all the medical staff speak english at case CLINICS? Yes, absolutely. We have very many english patients, so english is a must in GAES clinics, especially so here in Torrevieja. Who should be coming to the clinic for a check up? In reality, anybody older than 16 could take a hearing examination. Particularly anyone who feels that they may have had some hearing loss, or who are older, or simply would like to check that everything is still optimum. What is the normal process in a hearing revision at your clinic? Is there any obligation of further treatment? Firstly we would inspect the auditive canal to check there is no blockage, and if the ear is found to be clear, then there is a complete and thorough audio test to know the grade of hearing. If there is found to be hearing loss, we fully explain what help is suitable and recommended to regain a good level of hearing. The appointment lasts approximately one hour. There is no obligation of further treatment. How much does the revision cost (is it free?) It is completely free Are there new technologies that Gaes uses in your clinic,
in both treatment and diagnosis? Of Course! As market leaders, we have to stay ahead using the latest technology. Every year we incorporate the latest advances and products to achieve the best results in diagnosis and treatment. There are also aesthetic advances that are just as important. Thanks Vanessa. Your welcome. We look forward to hearing from readers soon. Don’t wait, book your free hearing check up today at YOUR local Gaes hearing clinic. For Torrevieja call 965 705 801. Panic for millions of people around the World!
By Jonathan Gilchrist IT’S THAT time of the year again that causes millions of people to live in terror for 24 hours. Another Friday 13th is now upon us again. Millions of people throughout the world live in terror of this particular day, and virtually become a recluse in their own home with this phobia, an irrational fear that something awful is about to befall them. Such superstitious beliefs are also quite prevalent in Greece and Spain where usually Tuesday the 13th is considered the unluckiest day. This year, 2015, will see three Friday the 13th’s! But did you know that the fear of the number 13 is called Triskaidekaphobia, and the fear of Friday 13th is called Paraskavedekatriaphobia. The phobia Paraskavedekatriaphobia derives from a 99-year-old word made up of a combination of the Norse and Greek roots words for ‘Friday’ (Paraskeví), ‘13’ (dekatreís) and ‘fear’ (phobia). Friday has long been considered unlucky for many reasons such as in religion with Jesus being crucified on a Friday , to the mythical. Frigga was a Scandinavian love goddess, who was worshipped on the sixth day of the week. Christians called Frigga a witch, and considered Friday to be the witches’ day. One famous person who supposedly had the fear of the number 13 was Queen Victoria. The story goes that she was invited to a dinner but refused to join the other guests because she would have been the 13th at the table, until someone pointed out that one of the guests was pregnant! There are millions of people throughout the world who have strange phobias and over the years I have had to help them overcome them using Fast Track Hypnosis which normally takes 4 sessions. Using the calming effects of my Fast Track Hypnosis method the subconscious mind is allowed to see the phobia in a very funny way. The theory behind this is quite simple, by laughing at your phobia, you can not be frightened of it, and if you are not frightened of it, it goes away. You might be confused with all these big words that are used for phobias. Try this one.. Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia. Believe it or not, that is the name for a phobia of LONG WORDS! Jonathan holds his Fast Track Hypnosis sessions in Cabo Roig, Quesada & Benidorm For an appointment, Brochure or free of charge initial consultation, contact Jonathan on 691 784 954 or email jonathangilchristbh@gmail. com, or visit his web site jonathangilchristinspain.com

20 - 26 MARCH 2015
Horoscopes The Sun enters just before the weekend, and this brings you a period of creativity and new ideas. Plans may not be fulfilled as you would like but this is because there may very well be other options that you can benefit from in the current scheme of things. Truth or consequence comes from the positive and inspiring energies you are subject to. Negative feelings are camouflaged by Venus squaring up to Jupiter; and you will get a chance to explain why you did what you did. There are enough good reasons for anyone, who cares and shares with you, to give you a second chance; but even they do not know what is really going on, and you can spill the beans if you really want to. Mercury has a message to deliver, but it hasn’t hit home yet, and may cause others to take the evasive action that makes sound sense right now. Your own feelings and explanations are cold comfort when it is the unknown that currently gnaws away at sensitivity and does nobody any favours. Take control because it’s what’s needed right now! The reflective energies of the Moon’s phase are to protect you in the deep waters surrounding you right now. You are open and inspired to complete something started but not finished and to make it work all ways. You may never get the thanks you deserve, but this is a way ahead, and it greatly clears your conscious to know that you did what you could. With the Sun currently in Aries and tuned into actions with both Jupiter and Mars there couldn’t be a better time to make a move. Remember that you are moving on and not running away and that anything that happens is for a reason, currently not understood by those who seek to offer you advice based on hubris and generally misplaced loyalties. Venus tempts Saturn and unleashes a poignant and nostalgic look back at things the way that they were. You have come a long way since, but the journey of life is about to bring you some much deserved dividends. New friendships beckon, but be true to your own, often unsettling, psychic energies; that advise using caution, above all, right now. Venus brings a touch of romance into play, but for starters, remove all guilt and know that things happen for a reason currently not known by either of you. The scales are easily balanced this week because you are being realistic and can enjoy being able to just be yourself for a change. Future plans are coming into view and after all, it’s time for change. Look to your opposing sign of Taurus to see that there are recent actions with Saturn that have a very strong baring on your current dilemma. Not wishing to make a splash before you are in receipt of vital evidence; this week sees you getting that conformation, and working positively with it. Stay focused and send out clear signals for guidance. Jupiter brushes by Mercury, courting the publicity you need and creating an emphasis that will inspire others and reward you for a job done well. The message has already been sent to the Cosmos; as from here onwards you need to be known for what you do best....and then you have to do it. Be prepared for some fine tuning and adjustments. Powers of concentration and organisation come with discipline this week as you calibrate to extend your intrinsic grip on things. OK so there are those who will say that you have bitten off a lot more then you can chew, but in the way things are going they have to eat their words because in terms of achievement you haven’t even really started yet! Mighty Uranus is involved at the opposite end of the Cosmos. Just when you feel that you need backing and a clear way forward you appear to be very much alone and maybe even up against it. Have no fear because one thing is certain, you need to have more trust in yourself, and this way you are closer to getting the result you really need right now. Attention is incumbent in your opposing sign of Virgo where both Saturn and Venus are working well together. This is the very best of times to give something all that you’ve got since someone is watching over you, for good reason. Whilst life can be problematic your enhanced energies are a positive and tuned solution to right any wrong.

Recipes HOME COOKING has become so very popular over the years. As we strive with recipes and tweak ingredients to perfection we are feeding both the body and soul as we do so. Never has an art become so practised, so popular and so much enjoyed; and from cupcakes to cocktails, soups to salsa and back again, each and every dish can be created from scratch. We can experiment and stray from the guiding energy of the recipe as we create the fuel that sustains us with no holds barred. Personal taste is everything and persistence may bring the very best results, although cookery is very much chemistry and the process cannot be reversed. There can be slip ups and mishaps, and we do prepare to learn by our mistakes and to benefit hands on from good advice. The process starts with the right ingredients and ends when the washing up is done and we are digesting the fruits of our labours. Sometimes the complicity of a dish challenges us, so too could our own version be better. It is always a possibility that something

We learn big time by our errors and our failings, and there is a multitude of advice out there on all levels when we need to resolve. Just lately there has been an epidemic of contests to test cooking and baking skills. Judged by experts and revered by the nation we reward those with specialist skills and encourage them to stand up to the tests they have to perform and to face the judgement of the professionals who are there to ensure quality control and elitism. Spirit is the recipe to sustenance and survival. There are the tried and tested recipes, and every so often inventions filter through and change the establishment, all be it for the better, usually. Spirit is a process, and there may very well be some enlightened detours and the impact of errors hits home as the chemistry takes us through to the other side. There are many recipes, and the ingredients may greatly differ, but the end result may very well be the same. The process brings about changes and adaptations, actively and openly promoting the many ways that there are to serve up a slice of that spiritual pie to be enjoyed by whoever needs it. Start with scratch and put in good intention

and balance the recipe with magic and all should turn out well. If not then the learning process transmits through what went wrong and then focuses on getting it right. The proof of the pie is in the eating, after all. Spirit will always point you towards someone who can lift and inspire you, just the same as Lorraine Pascale can smooth your quiche to a delectable finale free to be openly enjoyed by all who taste it. We are surrounded by a wonderful available library of books that will put you back where you so belong on your individual and magical pathway as well as perfect your gravy and help you produce the best ever Sunday Lunch. So too are there workers with Spirit out there that can help you cook up a storm if ever you need their help then that’s what they do; and it is their recipe for success. Don’t make a meal of any problems that crop up in this most Spiritual of journeys. You may be judged by others who have substituted ingredients and use other methods, but then we all do have favourite recipes and each of us enjoys different results all across the board. The global attraction of Spirit like the evolution of home cooking brings rich rewards and your own delicious dish of the day.

KENNY, WHAT do you when you can’t cry anymore? I have recently lost my partner but today I felt strongly that he has moved on and so then must I ? Anita K. Anita, I am glad that the time has come for you both to move on. I feel you have been instructed by the positive energy of your dear departed partner, and even though the tears were your sign of devotion, time is now better spent showing him that you are getting on with life, as you have to. It isn’t easy, but you are doing it. Some days will be easier than others, and just sometimes things will take you back, but your love will make the very best of connections possible, and may faith guide you to continue each with your lives, all be it on different planes.

Focus on Golf Powered by Campbell Lamont Golf, partnered by BayRadio
A new superstar is emerging as an old one fades By Tony Myles HAVING JUST watched a PGA competition over the weekend I am now a fan. Campbell will be fine-tuning his “I-told-you-so” expression and indeed that is exactly what he did more than two years ago when he so accurately forecast the coming of Jordan Spieth. So often you witness young prodigies emerging and the general expectation is that they will be a “flash-inthe-pan” and, after a single moment of excellence, they will fade as fast as they first appeared, thereafter to be consigned to the “Where are they now” features some years later. Not so with young Jordan. Just a couple of years ago he was the “Rookie of the year” having just turned professional a few months previously. Then in 2013 he went from 810th to 22nd in the world golf rankings. Despite that meteoric rise I remained unconvinced. Then over the last few hours of Sunday his performance in the VALSPAR trophy competition sealed it for me. In a three-way playoff he was up against self proclaimed Superstar Patrick Reed and the man eager to reinforce his return to competitive golf, Sean O’Hair. Over three holes each of these golfers found themselves
in difficult and potentially losing positions. But, they each constructed remarkable chips and putts to keep them in contention. Until, from over 28 feet, Jordan sank the putt that would secure him the title and his second PGA Tour victory before he has reached his 22nd birthday. Last year in the Masters he led the field until eventually being overtaken by Bubba Watson. I expect him to be one place higher this year. Moreover the emergence of Jordan reinforces the youth element in the US Golf squad and together with Patrick Reed and Ricky Fowler they will be a formidable threesome when they confront Europe in the next Ryder Cup. That is generally good news for Golf in US. Unlike Reed, Jordan has a likeability that is reminiscent of Luke Donald. He has a maturity and self-confidence beyond his years and he displays the quiet self -control that is the hallmark of Adam Scott. He has all the youthful exuberance of a former Tiger Woods. Campbell was right. He will be the next major superstar in Golf.

Honda Civic Tourer IT IS possible to make a visually striking estate car and one that in my opinion looks more fetching than its hatchback equivalent. I am talking about the Honda Civic Tourer, which is a thoroughly attractive vehicle from whichever angle you care to look. The hatchback is a decent enough car but the position of the spoiler has always been an issue for me because it gets in my way, obscuring my vision when looking in the rear view mirror. The Tourer doesn’t have that problem. Finished in orchid white with 17” alloy wheels this takes the estate car concept to a whole new level. Until now it was only Volvo that caught my eye in this department. The boot is massive too, easily swallowing our tandem pushchair and making it an ideal travelling companion. So we drive it to Suffolk to put it through its paces. It takes us a few hours to travel from Hampshire to Suffolk and the ride is comfortable. The driver’s seat is comfortable and

supportive and it quickly becomes clear to my wife that everything on the dash is angled in the driver’s favour. She never likes this because she can’t keep an eye on what’s going on. This model is fitted with sat nav and while it is undoubtedly useful this example is incredibly frustrating. Like a dodgy London cabby it takes us a long way round from Woodbridge, Suffolk to Ipswich, added to which its female voice whispers and we cannot fathom how to make her speak up. This means that it’s really difficult to hear her above the noise of our daughters and the road. Fortunately visual directions are also provided on the dashboard display. It is surprising that this Tourer feels really quite nimble despite its very sizeable boot. During our test Caroline is invited to a 40th birthday party for one of her friends who lives in Chatham, Kent. So we punch in the details to the sat nav and a couple of hours later we arrive. As with all cars the best efficiency is recorded at 56mph and when travelling at this speed for some hours it is possible to nudge the miles per gallon over 70. Driving like this enables us to travel from Hampshire to Suffolk and back and Suffolk to Kent and back all on the 50 litre tank of diesel with a good amount of luggage. The Tourer is certainly visually appealing and looks decidedly futuristic, which is surprising for an estate car, which so often looks the poor relation when compared to its hatchback or saloon
variants. Parkers, the car experts, write: “The Honda Civic Tourer is the estate version of the capable five-door Civic hatchback. It’s relatively small on the outside – the same width and wheelbase as the regular hatch and a scant 235mm longer – but can lug an extra 147 litres of luggage. From launch it is priced at approximately £1,000 more than the regular five-door Civic hatchback and enters a competitive market against other hatch-based estates such as the Seat Leon ST, Ford Focus estate, Vauxhall Astra Tourer and Toyota Auris Touring Sports. Although it’s not all that much longer than the hatchback model, boot capacity is the Civic Tourer’s real strength. “Official boot volume is a very generous 624 litres (to the window with the seats up) – by comparison the Vauxhall Astra Tourer’s official capacity is 500 litres and the Ford Focus Estate 476 litres. With the seats down, luggage capacity increases to 1,668 litres (measured to the roofline). That figure includes a large hidden compartment under the boot floor offering nearly 120 litres, enough space for two decent sized travel bags to be stowed out of sight. That compartment disappears if you select the option of a spare wheel, however. With the 60:40-split seat backs folded downwards there’s a completely flat load area and a load length close to 1.8m.” FACTS AT A GLANCE Honda Civic Tourer 1.6 i-DTEC EX Plus Manual New price: £27,960 Used price: £19,000 0-60mph: 10.5secs Top speed: 121mph Economy: 72mpg Power: 120bhp Watch the video at www.testdrives.biz
