Food, glorious food!

DELIGHTED FUND raisers Elsie and David Spence welcomed 91 people to a lunch in aid of youngsters living at the EMAUS home in Relleu – and collected 1,440 Euros to buy fresh food for the kids. by Jack Troughton THE COUPLE, from El Campello, staged the meal at the town’s Hong Kong Restaurant on Saturday and attracted record numbers. And Elsie and David, who raise money for charity Friends of the Children of EMAUS, also collected donations that have already been delivered to the house. Elsie said: “91 joined us at the Honk Kong. Thank you to people who also brought clothes, toiletries, food and items for our raffle. “Bakers made malt loaves to sell and a great donation of fresh eggs was delivered to the Relleu children’s house immediately.” One diner handed the pair 450€, the proceeds of a function she had organised earlier, and another regular supporter took the time to deliver a further 200€. “A massive thank you from Dave and I, and from the Friends of the Children of EMAUS, to everyone who came along and contributed to an afternoon of fun and laughter,” added Elsie. “Putting everything together, we collected a huge 1,440€ in the afternoon! This will feed the children in the Relleu house for almost four months.”

ACCORDING TO research paracetamol does not relieve back pain and offers almost no help to people with arthritis in their hips or knees. by Patricia Thompson THE FINDINGS have led to calls for doctors to stop prescribing the painkiller, which is commonly used to treat those conditions. “Paracetamol is ineffective in the treatment of low back pain and provides minimal short-term benefit for people with osteoarthritis,” con-

cludes the study, which is published in the British Medical Journal. “These results support the reconsideration of recommendations to An use paracetamol for patients with low estimated back pain and osteoarthritis of the hip 10 million or knee in clinical practice guidelines,” Britons are affected the authors add. by pain An estimated 10 million Britons are affected by pain, with the condition believed to lead to the loss of many millions of working days, including some 4.9m a year from work-related back pain. The findings have put pressure on the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice), which advises the NHS on what treatments are worthwhile.

News in brief...

Man Killed By MotherIn-Law’s Gravestone STEPHEN WOYTACK, 74, has died after his motherin-law’s gravestone fell on him. He was kneeling next to the grave marker when the top portion toppled on to his head, killing him, said police in north eastern Pennsylvania. +Ed Kubilus, the cemetery’s caretaker said the couple came to visit several times during the year, particularly at this time to decorate the grave for Easter. “They tie a cross to it every year, the both of them,” said. Ed, “And after they’re done tying the cross to it, they stand there, say prayers, and then leave.” Mr Kubilussaid some headstones become unstable this time of year as the ground begins to thaw, which causes the bases to sink slightly. He added the Woytacks had just recently moved their grave plots closer to the mother-in-law’s burial site.

B&Q to close 60 stores B&Q IS to close 60 stores in the UK - about one in six - as UK DIY market slows down. The closure is one of the first major decisions to be taken by the new CEO of the parent company Kingfisher, Véronique Laury. The closures are likely to lead to the loss of hundreds of jobs and cap a difficult period for Kingfisher which has also seen its deal to buy French rival Mr Bricolage collapse. However, shareholders are likely to welcome the store closures because Kingfisher has been battling for years in the UK against a slowing DIY market and growing pressure on out-of-town retailing. Ms Laury announced the closures alongside Kingfisher’s annual results, which showed sales falling 1.4pc to £10.97bn. Pre-tax profits for the year to January 31 fell 15pc to £644m.

Shootings shock village community Continued from front page The bodies of Peter – known in Jalon by his middle name David – and Jean, both aged 77, were discovered by police “locked in each other’s arms” on Sunday afternoon when they were called to their cottage on the outskirts of the village on the road to Bernia. David, a former Olympic diver, and Jean were due to meet friends for a regular meal out. When their phone calls went unanswered they went to the home and made the gruesome discovery. The Guardia Civil has said the paid were shot in the head at close range with a small calibre pistol two days earlier. Spent cartridges were found littering the floor. And a murder inquiry has been launched. The police are investigated the possibility of a bungled robbery. Uniformed officers stood at the gate of the Tarsey home on Monday while forensic officers carried out a computer and monitor. It is understood a specialist team recovered the hard drive from the home’s outdoor pool. A television is missing but other property including jewellery remained at the home. The Spanish press has reported there were attempts to drill a safe but they had not been successful and it was later discovered it only contained documents. The garden was also sealed off with police tape but the couple’s red Citroen car stood at the rear and there was washing still on the line.

FLOWERS By Tuesday evening a number of bouquets of flowers had been left at the gates to the property. Messages read: “Rest In Peace from all your friends in Jalon”. And the couple’s beloved pet, black and white mongrel Domino, was found wandering around the three-bedroom property, is being cared for by friends. The couple, originally from London, moved to Jalon around 1990 according to neighbours after David sold the family engineering business. They have two sons, Sascha, who lives in Majorca, and Alexei who cruises the world as a chef on a super yacht. RTN was told the house was up for sale as David and Jean intended to move to Majorca to be neared their son and their grandchildren. David, a keen gardener, and animal lover Jean, who worked for local charities, had integrated well into the Spanish community say friends. As a teenager David competed for Britain in the 1956 Olympics as well as the 1954 and 1958 Commonwealth Games. Police quickly dismissed the killings were suicide or a case of domestic violence. Neighbour Susan Keightley said an officer had come across to her home some 50 metres away and said there had been an accident. “I asked if they were OK because I heard an ambulance. He said they were both dead, he said it was a shock but they thought it was suicide.”

Guardia Civil at the gate of the house

She told RTN she had known the family since they moved to Jalon. “They were a wonderful couple. They were good people and didn’t deserve this, it’s absolutely dreadful. SUSPICIOUS And Susan, 72 and originally from Yorkshire, confirmed she had not heard anything suspicious. “And the little dog Domino didn’t bark at all. He is like a megaphone when he starts barking. “But you hear car doors banging all the time, there’s always hunters around the mountainside, there’s fireworks...certainly I heard nothing suspicious.” She described David as a “perfectionist” who always locked the gates to his property and there were no signs of a forced entry. “When people rang the bell he would go out to let them in.” Susan said 10 years ago at Christmas David

slept through a robbery at the home when valuables, including some jewellery, were taken and on another occasion there was an opportunist theft. And she said years ago her children had played with the Tarsey boys, and they had enjoyed parties around the pool. She said David enjoyed walking into Jalon for a pint, while Jean would meet friends for coffee. Susan said she was not afraid because of the shootings. “I will actually pull the bolts across every night but I do not feel unsafe. I have never felt unsafe in my house.2 However, villagers living in outlying homes around Jalon have admitted they feel “a little bit scared” as a result of the shootings. Social media has also come alive with comments about the murder. One said Jalon was a “sleepy little Spanish backwater” not a “violent city centre”, another wrote: “I cannot believe someone’s been shot in Jalon... it’s the most remote place ever.”

Remains of 1,300 scholars found under building

News in brief...

Family Arrested As Terrorist Suspects

SPANISH POLICE have arrested four members of a family, including twin teenage boys who were allegedly about to travel to Syria to become jihadi fighters. The parents and their sons were detained in Badalona, near Barcelona. Government sources say the teenagers had dropped out of school and started studying at an Islamic centre in Morocco. Spain has been carrying out raids on a series of suspected extremist cells in recent months, most of them in Ceuta and Melilla, two Spanish-governed coastal cities fenced off from northern Morocco. Tuesday’s raid in Catalonia marks the fourth this year.

The vast majority of burials were without coffins

by Patricia Thompson ONE OF Britain’s largest medieval cemeteries containing the remains of more than 1,000 people – many of them scholars fallen upon hard times – has been unearthed under part of Cambridge University. The hospital cemetery was found during excavations at St John’s College.and contained about 1,300 burials, including about 400 complete skeletons. While the existence and location of

the cemetery has been known to historians since at least the mid-20th century, the sheer scale and extent of the burial ground was unclear until now. The bodies, mostly from the 13th to 15th centuries, are burials from the medieval Hospital of St John the Evangelist, which stood opposite the graveyard until 1511, and from which St John’s College takes its name. Craig Cessford, from the university’s department of archaeology and anthro-

pology, said it was one of the largest finds of its kind in the UK. The vast majority of burials were without coffins, many even without shrouds, suggesting the cemetery was primarily used to serve the poor. The cemetery was found to have had gravel paths and a water well, along with seeds from various flowering plants, suggesting that much like today’s cemeteries, it was a place for people to visit their deceased loved ones.

Duck Stampede Stops Traffic

THOUSANDS OF ducks brought traffic to a standstill after they took over a main road in Thailand. The stampede was captured on mobile phone footage after drivers were forced to pull over while the birds rushed past. The seemingly never-ending line of ducks lasted well over two minutes before the video was cut off, although all the vehicles on the road were still unable to move. A witness said: “There must be a hundred thousand ducks, a train car’s load. I can’t go anywhere. This is a main farm country road. Every side road is experiencing this too.”

Arts lover backs restoration 8

Thursday, April 2 - Thursday, April 9 2015

RETIRED TEACHER and arts lover Elaine Evans is sponsoring the restoration of the historic Roman ‘Torre de San Josep’ at Villajoyosa. by Jack Troughton Elaine, who divides her time between the Costa Blanca and England, is a volunteer and a patron of the re-opened town museum Museo de la Vila. And last year, she was awarded the British Empire Medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for services to arts in East Sussex where she is a Regency Patron of the Brighton Royal Pavilion and Museums Foundation. Elaine, from Hove, fittingly received her BEM in the Red Drawing Room of the Royal Pavilion last October, presented by the Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex Peter Field on behalf of the Queen. Described as “passionate” about local history, she said receiving the medal was a “fairy tale” and she had been taking people to the Royal Pavilion for over 40 years. And she told RTN she was just as excited about her involvement in the restoration of the funerary tower, built in 2AD and thought to be the best preserved monument of its type in the Iberian Peninsula.

Elaine said she hoped renovating the structure and improving its environment – together with easy to read information boards Elaine – would bring more visitors to the tower and receives to Vila itself. her medal She said she also enjoyed her work at “my from second home” as a volunteer at the museum the Lord where much of Vila’s rich history and herit- Lieutenant Peter Field age is stored and exhibited.

Texas couple dead after argument over $500 lottery win A winning scratch-off lottery ticket worth $500 prompted an argument between a couple in Fort Worth that ended with both dying of gunshot wounds. by Patricia Thompson Fort Worth police said Terry Martin shot his long-time girlfriend, Laurice Hampton, and then shot himself early on Saturday morning in the bedroom of the house they had shared for several years. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s office ruled on Tuesday that Martin had committed suicide and that Hamp-

ton’s death was a homicide. Martin, 46, was found dead when officers arrived at the home about 6:30 a.m. on Saturday. Hampton, 48, was critically injured with multiple gunshots but was able to call 911 for help, police said. Hampton was taken to a local hospital, where she died, police said.

“They were having an argument over a scratch-off lottery ticket winnings,” said sergeant Joe Loughman. “We have been told they had a very volatile relationship.” Hampton told officers before she died that Martin had shot her and then shot himself. Martin died of a gunshot wound to the head, according to the medical examiner.

Did you know...

Not A Lot Of People Know This

Resaca (hangover) is one of those words that many English speakers will already know, like tapas, burrito, cargo, guerrilla, chorizo, and armada, without knowing the original or alternative meanings. Burrito means “little donkey”; guerilla means “little war” (making “guerilla warfare” kind of redundant,); and un chorizo can also mean un ladrón (a thief), making it theoretically possible for a chorizo to run away with your chorizo. Going back to the resaca, though, tener resaca means “to have a hangover”, but la resaca also refers to the undertow or undercurrent which leaves debris and driftwood scattered across a shore following a storm, and it is this playful imagery that endears me to the word.

Forgive me for being cynical DEAR SIRS, with reference to the recent discussions about the proliferation of beggars in Torrevieja. Now while I realise that a lot of these are genuinely in dire straits I noticed one this week who was sitting in a doorway on Vista Alegre complete with the usual no trabajo, no casa muchos hijos etc. However this poorly dressed man was playing with his iphone ! Now forgive me for being cynical but if I was reduced to begging the iphone would probably be the first thing to go to feed said family. Colin Rowe overwintering at C/Saeta Torreta 3

Road conditions A big thank you in Quesada I WISH to draw your attention to the shocking condition of the pedestrian crossing from Pedro Honig to Don Carlos in Quesada. Yesterday my wife and I, both late 60’s, were crossing at the pedestrian crossing, when my wife had the misfortune to step on the edge of a large hole in the road. She has severely sprained her ankle as a result, which, apart from being painful, means hours of waiting to see medical agents, an x ray and now days of recuperation. All this is as a direct result of the shocking condition of the crossing, after all supposedly a safe place for pedestrians to cross the road. When we went to the farmacia for medication, we were told that many people have had similar accidents there. Please use your influence with the local town hall to ensure that these issues are addressed before a more serious incident occurs. Thank you in anticipation, Alexander Smith

I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who attended the SAT charity event at Fairwayz bar, Dolores on 28th March. Thank you Jackie for helping me out on the night and for some wonderful raffle prizes. Thank you Sharon and Chris for the venue and supplying the lovely food and Ellie and Marg for working so hard behind the bar and in the kitchen. That’s Life duo were wonderful and they were playing for just expenses and donated more than half back to the charity. We raised an amazing sum of 516 euros. Thank you once again. Sheila

Reply to letter re residencia

WHAT YOU have is not a residencia, that is for non EU citizens. You have signed on the foreign citizens register that you are resident in Spain. You need this to be eligible for health care etc, and yes, you should change your driving licence for a Spanish one, even if only to save a lot of hassle if stopped by the Police. I was furious when the ID card was discontinued. This happened because a British Expat organisation protested to the EU that, as we were not required to carry ID cards in The UK, we should not have to carry them in Spain. How I wish this well intentioned, but misguided group had never meddled with what was a perfectly good system. No one I knew minded carrying our ID cards, indeed it made us feel part of Spanish life. Now we are supposed to carry this precious document, the passport, risking it being damaged, lost or stolen, with all the stress, inconvenience, and financial loss this involves. Ellen Rose

Toilet humour THE COMEDY musical ‘Stepping Out’ features Vera – a member of a tap dancing class – and someone obsessed with cleanliness.

CHARITY NEWS...

Perfect pitch for Hope

STUDENTS AT Xabia International College pitched in to perform at a concert in aid of music teacher Abi Fletcher’s Kenyan charity ‘Hope Restoration Centre’ in Nairobi. Youngsters of different ages at the secondary school in Javea took advantage of lunch breaks to hone talents to entertain colleagues, parents and staff – presenting an eclectic mix of classical guitar, piano and violin, together with a band ensemble and a girls’ choir. Material ranged from classics of Beethoven and Bach to contemporary sounds from Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith – with Henry Mancini and Bob Marley included along the way. The concert followed a presentation by teacher Abi outlining the progress achieved at Hope – thanks to her own determination and the backing of money raised at XIC in support of the good cause.

by Jack Troughton In the Footlights Theatre Group’s production Barbara Lloyd tackles the comic role – made famous by Julie Walters in the 1991 film version of the show. And Barbara has been getting into character during rehearsals at the Footlights Centre in Calpe and inspects the loos before any run through starts. In Stepping Out, Vera is always the first to arrive at classes to check out and clean the toilets and to insure the rehearsal space is spick and span. With something of a cleaning fetish, she also takes fellow dancers to task over their personal hygiene, smoking and chewing gum habits. Naturally her obsession and the ensuing confrontations bring hilarious results. Stepping Out opens at Alfaz del Pi on Friday 10th April and at Calpe on Tuesday 14th April. Tickets are 12€ for adults and 8€ for children under 14. They are available by calling 652 404 798 or footlights.boxoffice@gmail.com and can also be purchased for the Alfaz show from the AECC cancer charity shops in Alfaz and Albir.

Wedding couple say ‘I do’ for charity

Stars in their eyes IN FEBRUARY, Suzie Edwards, the proprietor of Cosmopolitan Bar in El Galan , had the idea to get her regulars to put on a “Stars in Their Eyes” show for the Pink Ladies/AECC. On March 21st her dream came to fruition with Dusty Springfield, Matt Monro, Shirley Bassey, Frank Sinatra, Bobby Darin, Billy Fury and Jim Reeves all appearing in front of a packed house. A good time was had by everyone and a total of 171€ was presented to this very worthy charity.

NEWLYWEDS ALEX and Brian tied the knot for charity when they used their wedding reception as a fund-raiser for two Costa Blanca animal charities.

Alex and Brian hand the money to Chrissie and Stan Edwards (centre) of LAPS

by Jack Troughton The pair married in Santa Monica last 4th December and returning to Spain threw a party for family and friends 10 days later. And instead of wedding presents from their guests, the big-hearted asked for donations to two charities – LAPS in Pego and SCAN in El Vergel.

Everyone chipped in generously – and anonymously – and the appeal raised 940€, Alex and Brian added another 60€ themselves, giving each charity 500€. Pictured at a recent donation, Alex and Brian hand the money to Chrissie and Stan Edwards (centre) of LAPS. The charity will spend the money support-

ing the area’s unwanted animals. LAPS heads off fund raising again with its annual Sponsored Dog Walk, a gentle 5km walk through the orange groves of Pego, on Sunday 19th April starting at 10.30am. For more information and registration forms, call Chrissie on 661 199 270 or email chrissie.mpego@hotmail.com

Guadalest

Thursday, April 2 - Thursday, April 9 2015

19

SET AT 595m above sea level, the village of Guadalest hangs precariously to the mountain top and is rated as one of the most visited villages in Spain; and with good reason. DATING BACK to the 8th Century, Guadalest is now home to just over 200 residents who invite you to step back in time and explore their fabulous village. Guadalest was built by the Moors and stood as a fortified city until it was conquered by the Christians in the middle of the thirteenth century, turning the Moorish stronghold, into their own gaol. In June of 1644 a devastating earthquake destroyed the Castle of Guadalest who´s ruins can still be seen and the dungeon in the old village gaol offers an eerie silence to those who enter. Steeped in history and being the cause of many battles, Guadalest now has more of a tranquil life. With its whitewashed houses and cobbled streets, Guadalest has become as famous for its arts, crafts and museums as it has its long and twisted history. Set on Two levels, the lower of which is the newer part and is a maze of, cafes, bars & craft shops and museums, which are definitely worth a visit. To access the higher part, you need to pass through the mountain that has been carved out making an entrance to the old fortified village. Guadalest offers stunning picturesque views of the surrounding landscape and turquoise blue reservoir that supplies lower towns, villages and even Benidorm with its supply of fresh water. HOW TO GET THERE? Round Town Travel offer a weekly excursion to the village that runs every Thursday, leaving Benidorm at 10:00 and returning approx 16:00. Andy and Martin

SEVEN YEARS on and Border Choice is kicking trends with borders all over the globe, having now expanded with Border Choice Europe and Border Choice Italia. The Cypriot based Company run by Andy Carrington and Martin Haigh has seen some big changes in the last few years. We’ve practically re invented the wheel says Andy and Martin; it was no easy feat in the early days having gone back to the drawing board on various occasions. It would have been easier to have used an outside source for the original product but knowing we were going to encounter problems such as borders coming unstuck we decided to manufacture our own product by using extreme testing and yes during the early stages we did come across some very tough hurdles. The borders have to cope with some extreme situations, heavy dosage of chemicals, strong sunlight, modern sun creams and various other factors that can cause malfunction but we’ve tested and fitted thousands of different products and proud to say we have now produced a product that we can be proud of. Shark Force has been specially developed to cope with the extremities of living in a interchanging environment and is produced in our British based

factory, we now have our own design teams based in various countries such as Andreas in Italy who has designed some of the borders in the Designer Range and who also runs Border Choice Italia and along with Paul and Guido who look after France, Belgium and Germany with Border Choice Europe. We have over the years helped various customers in Spain make their pools look like new but would like to be able to offer our services to more people in the Spanish community, we still enjoy talking to customers and hearing of the various problems that they encountered and how happy they are with the solution that Border Choice gave them. Over the years many of these customers have become our friends promoting our products. So where next! We seem to be getting known more and more each year and we keep introducing new ideas like the Empire Range to keep our new customers interested and we also have some old customers coming back to refresh their old borders with a new design. It makes sense, why replace the liner when you can just

Jane

refresh the border and save money! We want to remain a border company that’s what we do best! The product’s very easy to order On Line and you’ll save 20% by doing this. There’s a contacts page if you have any questions about measuring and there’s even a film on the web site to show how to check your measurements are correct. We’ve got one of the largest collections of pool border designs in the world so plenty to choose from. For more information please call or email Jane who is based in Andalucia and will be able to assist with any advice throughout Spain. Did your garden store or use March’s rain water effectively? by

Dick Handscombe Holistic gardener and author

WE ARE now in April, but it is not sure that we will get many traditional April showers. However many readers will have had a good number of rainy days during the second half of March which will have dampened many soils and been collected in water butts or storage tanks by those thoughtful enough to buy a house with large tanks under a terrace or in an under-build, or have one installed. Unfortunately as highlighted in the book ‘How to use less water in your garden – A practical guide to waterless Mediterranean gardening worldwide’ much of the rainfall will have been underutilised, lost or ineffective. Frequent causes are as follows. 1. Soil that is not water absorbent and retentive. It pays to improve tge soil where you intend to plant things. Don’t waste time and money elsewhere like under terraces. 2. The planting of thirsty plants. There are clear indications of the relative thirstiness of possible plants in the book mentioned above and in our original bible for thoughtful expatriate gardeners ‘Gardening inSpain’. 3. Poor mulching, especially using shallow light materials tat blow away on windy days. 4. Only have a small water butt or storage tank. It’s easy to install additional storage capacity. 5. Terraces with no raised edge to hold run off back to soak into the soil. Modify the slope of the earth and place a line of retaing rocks along the edge of the terrace. 6. Water runs off into neighbours gardens as the land slopes and or there is not even a single building block retaining wall. 7. Water runs down the drive into the road or where not

really required. Divert the runoff into channels/pipes to take water to areas of the garden where required or into a `pond/lake or an underground storage tank. 8. Having paths around the house up to the walls instead of leaving 40 to 80 centimetres of space for planting some of the many plants whose roots are not potentially damaging to the house foundations. 9. Recognise that the basic concept, design and construction of your garden may not be waterwise. Chapter 4 section 4.1 ‘ The design and development of your garden’ lists some forty generic types of gardens according to their Thirsty, Moderate and Low water needs. The forty types of garden described range from ; Thirsty – An English Style Garden; Moderate water needs – Arab style series of mini gardens – each with contrasting design and plantings; Low water needs – An entirely natural garden based on retaining and nurturing the native plants that had grown on the plot for decades since the agricultural land was abandoned or for centuries if virgin hillside or valley floor. The choice is yours. ‘How to use less water in your garden – A practical guide to waterwise Mediterranean gardening worldwide’ includes some 300 practical ideas and is is available from Amazon Books at the reasonable cost of 3.99 pounds or 4.52 euros plus postage, which is free if you buy a number of the same or other books. If you do a search on Amazon Books for ‘Dick Handscombe’ all his series of gardening and lifestyle books will be displayed.

British and EU citizens recover their money back from Spanish tax office European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruled Spanish inheritance laws were illegal against non spanish residents. In September 2014 the European Court of Justice (ECJ) passed a Judgment declaring the Spanish inheritance tax laws as discriminatory towards non-residents and against the EU Treaty. Now, at least for Spanish Legal Reclaims S.L. (an EU tax specialized law firm), claimants are successfully receiving their money back from the Spanish Tax Authorities (100% success rate). Average refund size currently stands at €25,000. However as many as 100,000 Britons could be affected and entitled to reclaim. Other European citizens affected can also come forward to make a claim. An action group called Spanish Legal Reclaims (SLR) recently launched a dedicated website to inform possible claimants how to file a claim www.spanishlegalreclaims.com . SLR helped 1,000´s of clients recover the overcharged taxes they paid in Capital Gains Tax and they are now successfully recovering the inheritance and donation tax for non-Spanish residents under a No Win, No Fee agreement. Mr. Luis Cuervo, states “Once again, we were right predicting that the ECJ’s ruling would be positive, but the most important fact is

that we have already started to receive inheritance tax refunds for our first 25 clients three weeks ago (100% success rate). Winning the first cases is crucial as it is clear now that our strategy, the legal procedure chosen, and our legal arguments are the correct ones. Facing a legal procedure like this requires not only expertise but also deep analysis and knowledge. As anyone who has been affected by this illegal tax can only claim once, we strongly recommend that file their claims with an experienced expert in EU tax law as there will be no second chance”. Mr. Cuervo added, “Claimants could recover their money within 8 months, plus up to 4% compound interest. Many

Spanish and UK/EU lawyers are cooperating with us to help their own clients, once they understand the legal process requires deep analysis and expertise. We urge anyone else who believes they have been affected by this tax discrimination to come forward. Taking quick action is important as the right to make a reclaim may expire”. Key pension changes that you NEED to know about NEXT MONTH the most radical pensions overhaul in nearly a century will hit Great Britain. The new rules will apply to both personal pensions and moneypurchase or defined contribution scheme. FROM APRIL 6, millions of over-55s will be free to take their workplace or personal pension pots as cash if they wish. They will no longer be obliged to lock into an annuity that pays an income for life. You can still buy an annuity if you wish but many people will prefer to take advantage of their newfound flexibility to draw cash from their pot instead. The new rules do not apply to unfunded public sector pensions or some final salary pensions. You should be aware that the first 25% you take as a lump sum from your pension will be free of tax if you are UK tax resident. But here in Spain only the first 60% of the first cash lump sum, no matter what the % you take is tax free the remainder like the UK will be taxed at your personal rate. This means if you are a 20% taxpayer and take a large cash lump sum or cash in your pension, it could

push you into the 47% tax bracket here in Spain, or even if you are in the UK into the 40 per cent tax bracket, this means you will hand a hefty chunk of your lifetime savings to the taxman, no matter what country you live in. The Chancellor also announced the lifetime pension allowance would be cut to ÂŁ1 million, from ÂŁ1.25 million. This includes money from both company and personal pensions with any funds above that taxable at 55 per cent. Finally, up to five million people could now be free to convert their regular annuity income into a cash lump sum if they wish but changes will not come into force until April 2016. Given how confusing this can all be we are urging people to take advice before deciding what to do from a reputable regulated adviser. Once the money has gone, it has gone. Clearly, making the right decision can be a minefield. We are here to give you free, impartial,

independent advice. If you have any questions or need any clarification regarding the above you can contact me on 636361588 or e-mail wayne.martin@blacktowerfm.com

The cheapest way to transfer properties in Spain between spouses DEAR LAWYER, my husband and I have an apartment in Spain, Costa Blanca. We are not tax residents, and we want to put it my name only. I have been told that with the change in the inheritance and gift tax laws, the Valencian Tax Law will apply to us, and therefore the cheapest way would be as a donation or gift in my favor. Is this true ? DEAR READER, thank you for your enquiry. The rules to determine the applicable tax law for donations, gifts and successions in Spain have indeed changed. So, even though you are not resident in Spain, if the property is in Costa Blanca (Valencia), the Valencian tax Law will apply to you, which is generally much more advantageous than national or state tax rules. Law 13/1997 of the Valencian Government’s rules, in its Article 10 Bis, concerning reductions in donations and gifts, foresaw some tax reductions: a reduction of € 100,000 in donations in favor of descendants (children and grandchildren), and ascendants (parents and grandparents). Similarly, the Valencian legislation provides a tax benefit of a reduction of 75% of the tax to be paid, with a limit of 150,000 in gifts to children, grandchildren, parents or grandparents. Therefore, donations and gifts between ascendants and descendants have very significant tax benefits. But unfortunately the Valencian law does not foresee any relevant tax benefit on the tax payable when the donation is made between spouses, (there are important benefits in inheritance between spouses). Therefore, whilst it is true that the Valencian law will apply to you, despite not being resident tax, in your case as spouses, the gift tax would still be high. In your case, if the Spanish property is registered at the land registry in yours and your husband’s names, your husband could sell it to you, or even better, you could agree a division of the common property (or proindiviso), where you could be awarded the whole property, compensating

your husband for his half. The advantage of this transaction (which legally has no consideration as a sale), is that it is fiscally very advantageous, only incurring tax stamp duty, which in Valencia region is 1.5% of the total value of the property.

showbiz goss Hot, then Cold, then Hot again, for Charlene Israeli actress Gal Gadot has suffered in the press down the years due to her elf-like figure and rather minuscule bosom. Now she´s the new Wonder Woman, the role made famous by the voluptuous Lynda Carter in the 70´s, Ms Gadot´s smallness is back in the news. Gal countered “true Amazons of the comic books h a d just one boob so it wouldn’t bother them in their archery” … well bless ma cotton socks!

The day after winning the Australian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton took some time out to do a bit of sightseeing. Whilst wandering around Sydney he spotted a young family ea-

AT JUST 17 Kylie Minogue joined the cast of TV soap Neighbours playing the part of Charlene Mitchell, a schoolgirl turned garage mechanic. As ludicrous as that storyline most certainly was, Kylie´s charm won her mucho admirers which culminated in the wedding episode in 1987, when she married Jason Donavan´s character Scott, a show that attracted an audience of 20 million British viewers. The wee lassie has since gone on to immeasurable success in the music business, with No1´s scattered all over the globe. Her journey however has not been without major upsets, with poor health and a couple of slumps in her record sales along the way. Now aged 46, Kylie is facing a similar situation that has come as quite a surprise to her masses of fans. Husband of Beyonce, rapper Jay-Z, set up his own music business company Roc Nation in 2008, and two years ago convinced Kylie she should join his operation. However, after releasing just one album Kylie was quoted as saying “I’m calling it quits after feeling ‘disappointed’ in how the release was handled.” A source told The Sun: “The deal just didn’t work out for either side and she now wants to go in a different direction,” thank you source person. From what I´ve picked up about Jay-Z, he´s a serial control freak having been quoted in year one of Roc Nation that he planned to take over the music business, and when you have greed running at that sort of level, for sure you are heading for a fall. On the positive side the word is Kylie has not been sitting on her laurels and has new music that’s good to go, with some of the tracks coming out as soon as next month ... Well done that wee lassie! gerly making their way towards him and prepared himself to have his photo taken. Instead the people didn´t recognise him and asked if he would take a picture of their family group. Lewis obliged with no fuss … top geezer!

It’s true that the cream will always rise to the top, and equally true that rubbish will always hit the bottom. Luisa Zissman was invited onto BBC3’s ´Free Speech: I’m A Conservative, Ask Me Anything´ recently, and they got their comeuppance for such a foolhardy decision. Twitter went bonkers after she ranted on about feminism, Page 3 girls and Uni students spending 3 years getting drunk … Silly Beeb!

Elizabeth Hurley recently attended the premiere of her new TV show ´The Royals´ in which she plays Queen Helena, the matriarch of a fictional British royal family. She chose to attend the event with her 12 year old son Damian, and a handsome lad he was to, grabbing as much attention as his mother. His father is film producer Steve Bing and his Godfather is Liz´s ex Hugh Grant … humm, interesting!

Embarrassed by Mum My mother is 51. She has started acting weird, and has taken to wearing my sister’s skimpy, revealing clothes. I feel uncomfortable whenever my male friends come around, because she is openly flirting with them. Dad just says it’s her age, and brushes it off. I need her to know that she is being laughed at, but don’t want to hurt her feelings. I would say that your Mum is going through the menopause. There are many physical symptoms to deal with, and for some women, there are psychological changes that can leave them feeling that their most attractive years are behind them. Your Mum needs to know how you feel, and for her own sake, someone should speak to her about her dressing inappropriately. Is there a female relative who could broach the subject? There’s nothing wrong with wanting to make the most of oneself. Suggesting that your Mum sticks to clothes that are more classy and stylish, is a good idea, and this will still make her feel attractive without looking out of place.

Printer wont print Hi Aunty: I have a problem with printing from my computer,it was working fine I put new ink then it printed once the would not print again. I have 8.1 computer laptop and my printer is HP Desktop 1050. Aunty says: Have you run the “alignment” which is often required when installing new cartridges in a HP printer? Does the printer show up on the Control Panels list of Printers? If not then you will have to uninstall and reinstall the drivers. Response: Many thanks

Flemish translation problems

Hello, Hope all is ok in your world. Now here is a toughie. I have a friend who speaks only Flemish. I went into Systran, pasted her email, and. although I went into the Flemish section it translated in French. Is there a download for Flemish please. Your help has always been invaluable so I sincerely hope you can help with this, especially if the download is free. Meri J Aunty says: After a few hours searching around, most online translators seem to ignore Flemmish, offering French or Dutch translations instead. Although the Dutch translation was almost understandable.

Unwanted pop-ups Hi Aunty, Please help. We have been inundated by porn sites and Russian girls wanting to chat. These unwanted sites pop up constantly while we are searching for or reading other sites. This occurs on both the tablet and the laptop. Every time we use the tablet there is an advice note on screen, telling us to navigate away from this page, which blocks the tablet. Is there anything we can do about this? Looking forward to your reply. Kind regards, June Aunty says: There are a number of things to try. Firstly, update and run a scan on your

antivirus software. Next, install antimalwarebytes, update and run a scan. Next, make sure that the “pop up” blockers on your browsers are activethese are usually in the settings option of your browser. Next clear the “cache” of your browsers - again these are usually in the settings option of your browser. You can also “reset” your browsers - again these are usually in the settings option of your browser. And finally, depending which browsers you are using, you may wish to install a “pop up / ad” blocker.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin

Disjunctive pronouns TODAY WE are going to look at some things called “disjunctive pronouns”. I KNOW the name sounds rather like an eye infection but please stay with me for a while. Grammar words are almost always off-putting, but if we understand what they mean it can help us to understand their use. Pronouns, as we have learned before, are words that replace nouns. If I say “he” instead of “Pedro”, or “it” instead of “computer” I am using a pronoun. As for the “disjunctive” bit, it sounds like “disjointed” and that is what it is. It refers to pronouns that do not connect directly to verbs, but which stand on their own in some way. In most cases disjunctive pronouns follow prepositions. I can feel your eyes rolling, but please, keep reading …! This is what I mean: “with me”, “to you”, “about him”, “for us” – these are all prepositions with disjunctive pronouns and this is what we are going to learn today. I’m sure you will agree that they are very useful things indeed. Let’s take the example of a phrase which I’m sure you use frequently: “para mí” (for me). You learnt to say this with “un café con leche” or “una cerveza grande” within a short period of arriving in Spain. “Para” is a preposition, and “mí” is a disjunctive pronoun. Now we can use “mí” with other prepositions.

47

We can say for example: “He is talking about me” “Está hablando sobre mí” or “Está hablando de mí”; “You can go without me” “Puedes ir sin mí”. We can also say: “a mí” (to me) often when we want to be emphatic: “A mí me gusta” (“I like it”). This is stronger than just “me gusta” on its own. Also, “dámelo a mí” (“Give it to me). “Dámelo” already means “Give it to me”, the extra “a mí” makes it more emphatic. I know a lot of this is difficult to translate into English or even comprehend via the English language which does not work the same way, but hopefully you are getting the general idea. Now, we have only looked at the “first person singular” mí, but we can replace this for the “second person singular” “ti”, as in “para ti” for you, “sin ti” without you, and so on. You will be delighted to know that apart from those two forms (mí, ti) the rest of the disjunctive pronouns are exactly the same as the subject pronouns. Yes, you do remember what they are. So here are all of the Spanish disjunctive pronouns to refresh your memory. Mí Nosotros / nosotras Ti, Vosotros / vosotras Él, ella, usted Ellos / ellas /

Suduko Answer

ustedes Here is just one more example of use, and a phrase that could be useful if you want to give someone a tip in a courteous way: “para usted” (for you) as you hand over the money. There’s just one little one I’ve missed from the above list which is “sí”. Yes I know “sí” (with an accent) means “yes” and “si” (without an accent) means “if”, but please remember I didn’t invent this language. Now we have another accented “sí” which is an impersonal disjunctive pronoun. It’s can mean “one” or “oneself” or “itself” in certain neutral types of sentences. I’ll leave it there for now. Two more things to say: firstly in answer to the question, why does “mí” have an accent, whereas “ti” does not? The answer is that “mí” has an accent to prevent it from being confused with “mi” meaning “my”, as in “mi hermano” (my brother). Secondly, there are two particular forms which are “on-offs” and just different from all the others. They are “conmigo” (with me) and “contigo” (with you). Don’t ask why these two are different, because you’ll only get that most annoying of answers – because they are. See you next week.

“SMILE CHARITY GROUP” tread the boards again! Feeling faint FAINTING IS a sudden, temporary loss of consciousness that unfortunately often results in a fall. Fainting is very common, affecting up to 4 in 10 people at least once during their lifetime. Most people experience their first episode of fainting before the age of 40. Healthcare professionals often use the term ‘syncope’ when referring to fainting, because it distinguishes fainting from other causes of temporary unconsciousness, such as seizures (fits) or concussion. WHAT CAUSES A FAINT? To function properly, the brain relies on oxygen that’s carried in the blood. Fainting can occur when the blood flow to the brain is reduced. Your body usually corrects this quickly, but the reduced blood flow can make you feel odd, sweaty and dizzy. If it lasts long enough, you may faint.

WHAT CAUSES REDUCED BLOOD FLOW TO THE BRAIN? The heart fails to pump the blood The blood vessels don’t have enough tone to maintain blood pressure There is not enough blood or fluid within the blood vessels Any combination of the above. CHANGES IN THE HEART’S RHYTHM Heart rhythm changes are the most common cause of fainting. The heart is an electrical pump, and if an electrical system problem exists, the heart may on occasion be unable to adequately pump blood, causing short term drops in blood pressure. The electrical issues may cause the heart to beat too quickly (tachycardia), too slowly (bradycardia), or erratically. Aside from structural electrical problems with the heart, medications may be the culprit. NEURALLY MEDIATED SYNCOPE This is as a result of a temporary malfunction in the automatic nervous system. This is the part of your nervous system that regulates the body’s automatic functions, including heartbeat and blood pressure. Neurally mediated syncope can be triggered by emotional stress, pain or prolonged standing. It can also be caused by physical processes such as coughing, sneezing or laughing. Neurally mediated syncope is the most common

type of fainting. It often occurs for the first time during the teenage years and affects girls more than boys. WHAT TO DO IF SOMEBODY FEELS FAINT OR FAINTS If somebody feels faint they should encouraged to lie down, preferably in a position where their head is low and legs are raised. This will encourage blood flow to the brain. If it’s not possible to lie down, they should sit with their head between their knees. In most cases, a person will return to normal within a few minutes of fainting, and no further treatment will be needed. In most cases, when a person faints, they’ll regain consciousness within a minute or two. However, less common types of fainting can be medical emergencies so immediate medical attention should be sought if a person who has fainted doesn’t regain consciousness within two minutes. If a person experiences repeated episodes of fainting, it’s important for a healthcare professional to investigate the cause. If you’ve had a fainting episode, advice to deal with possible future fainting episodes includes: Avoiding triggers – such as hot and crowded environments, or emotional stress Spotting the warning signs, such as feeling light headed Lying down to increase blood flow to the brain If your first episode occurs after 40 you should make your GP aware as it may be a sign of a serious underlying problem.

Horoscopes Something tells you to take immediate action since something seems not to be working and evasive intervention is called for. The actions of Saturn seem to be working against all that you stand for and it is time to take the helm of a situation that is veering well and truly out of control and could well have repercussions that affect near future plans. Things come to a very satisfactory end and you can breathe a sigh of relief that everything is done and dusted. You have taken the rough with the smooth but what has been the icing on the cake is your consistency and determination, which bring you such good results. Time to thank those who have put up with you; helping you through this situation. You feel ready for a change of direction, and the bidding energy of Mercury reacts positively in the second house of hospitality and well being. A message received mid week finds you accepting help and assistance in a venture you are currently planning, and you could well do with a spare pair of hands as you wind up a notch in preparation. Someone has taken the wrong end of the stick, and you may be wishing you were not involved in a situation that appears to be working against all that you stand for. As mighty Uranus takes on a warring Mars there comes a time when your side of all this needs to be told, loud and clear, and peace will come into the equation as a result! A great time to show just what you can do as you stand in for someone this week. You may even surprise yourself as you rise to the occasion and take conscious control in an inspiring way. The past weeks seem to have been very flat and dull, and this week the scene is set and you have to take centre stage by storm, and take that very well deserved bow. You are currently undecided about something. It is impossible to take sides right now but this is, more or less, what you are being asked to do. Clearly this is the right time to have your say as things have started to have a knock on effect and silence does not help anyone, any more. Saturn takes on Ceres, so time is of the essence this week! Look within yourself to see just what you have achieved, and be proud at the effect that it has had on others. This is the start of a new journey and it will take you to where you just have to be right now. Thinking of yourself isn’t selfish, so give yourself the biggest dose of self love, there will be plenty left over for those who need it, as you do. The famous sting in the end of the tail isn’t so obvious right now as you scan see things finally coming together. The complication of your life has brought new beginnings and opportunities, and there is now a need to pursue something to the very end with love and dedication marking a clear, transparent and inspiring way forward. An absent Jupiter sees you taking a gamble on something. Instinct tells you that for you history is repeating, and it is surely a case of nothing ventured, nothing gained. Though you truly are playing to win, the odds are against finding a fallible solution, and though you may be close to the winning post, fate will say what will be, will be. Energy centres on the home, and in particular domestic issues, which have to be addressed. This is a great time for a project, particularly if it involves some D. I.Y., as making beauty is a positive step to be taking right now. Prepare to ring the changes and splash the cash, because you are worth it and your home deserves a nifty makeover. Belief in yourself will see you through this time. Your heart and soul both answer to you, but vibrations here are stirred by the inception of Mercury and silenced by the introspective energies of a sensitive Pluto. This leads to a no win no lose situation, which may mean you have bitten off more than you can chew, but at least it shows you are right. Expect some changes to your routine this week for good reason, as you are guided to take on something that will showcase your talent. You sometimes doubt yourself, and in the current flow of things, are about to commit to steering something back on track. You will be critical of yourself, but there is nobody who could step in and take over as you will.

Norwegian magic SOMETHING IS stirring as the trees are gently waving in an icy cold breeze. It is sunny and yet so cold outside and as the sun shines through the trees and the light flickers across my desk as I write, it seems to connect me to the wonderful energies of Mother Nature, who seems to be working overtime these days. I am in Norway and in the country where surely the colour green was first invented. Close by a sapphire lake mirrors the mountains beyond it, and, as the calm water reflects the golden energies of the sun, magic happens. Mother Nature has seen so much destruction and chaos in the World. As forests are re claimed and land is invaded the spectacle that nature offered to the World is irreparably damaged forever. I fell very strongly that though we are not responsible for global warming we are nevertheless polluting the planet by our silence. The natural beauty that is Norway is an inspirational story of survival. The coldest of harsh winters always brings snow and ice and the winds blow cold and from the north; yet there grows the little noble snowdrop and the crocus thrives. Nature sings a song here and it is one well worth listening to. The dynamic energy here is an inspiration and the perfect setting for charging the spiritual batteries. Is it in the mountain air or close to the pounding waves of the grey green North Sea? Maybe it is in the curtain of water as a waterfall splinters above at 50 metres and hits granite rock or could it be deep in the heartland of

Kenny‛s Postbag

the fiord? It is a wonderful thing to create beauty if you can do it. Norway leads the way in creating a natural beauty for everyone to enjoy, and the freedom to experience the true energy of an historic past. The Vikings were merchants and not the latter day terrorists known only to do their fair share of raping and pillaging. They left Scandinavia in search of warmer climes and they found the Celtic islands, amongst others, and established trade deals. The Viking code of conduct applied to each contract be it on a handshake. Be aware that the toast of “Skol!” refers to a drink from the past being served inside a recently severed skull, and that this was therefore a battle victory celebration. Today it is a toast at the clink of a glass, of course. Here comes a toast to the warm spirituality and the intriguing beauty that is found throughout this diverse country; that offers snow capped mountains and forests of green under the blueist of skies. Nature’s gifts are a basic here; whether found in the drama of the Midnight Sun or celebrated in the enchantment of the Northern Lights. In the North where the Aurora Borealis is to be clearly seen, the sky awakens with a dazzling show of green and purple lights, and a supernatural sound is eerily heard right across the dark silence of the night. It is here that there is a folk law that tells people not to wear white at night in case they are somehow spirited, away. Such is the magic of Norway, and it is indeed magic to behold!

KENNY MY son is twelve and laughed at at school because he seems to be freely talking about his spiritual experiences. I want to encourage him but it is hard to tell him what to do! Monica ( SMS) Hi Monica. This is a difficult situation. Your son is experiencing something rather wonderful that is happening to him. Naturally he shouldn’t be afraid to speak his mind and to share his findings and feelings. If he was chatting about football or some new telephone app they would listen and understand, but because it is something different, not understood by them, they do the opposite and tease him. Encourage your son by telling him that all he experiences is so special he should share it with special people, and not those who simply laugh. Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Got Bikinis and in season fruit! La Cala Finestrat Saturday Market has it all and a great day out too…… It has been over a year since our last visit to the Saturday morning market in the bay at La Cala Finestrat. Since then this relaxing and friendly shopping experience has gone from strength to strength. What was once a tiny and rather dull little market selling the usual range of shoes, handbags and lots of grot has grown into a fine place to buy fresh local produce, cheese, bread, and of course hams and delicious sliced sausages of all types. This happy market is such because it does not allow too many competing pitches. Here you will not find stall after stall all selling exactly the same thing, good for business and good for you the shopper. This is a local market frequented by people who live locally and not just a touristy market. The Saturday market really deserves support, it is great. You will find just enough variety here with a great mix of food, clothes and of course those obligatory look like the real thing handbags! You will not find row after row of “brown shoes only” stalls, instead you will find smart modern (mostly fake) branded shoes for men and sparkly big Cha Cha heels for ladies and even Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Got Bikinis too! There are several of each type of stall, but each seems to sell very different stock. You will find really good handmade costume jewellery, a wonderful stall selling every type of olive you could imagine. There are beautifully colourful seasonal fruit and vegetable stalls, the smell of fresh baked bread plus local cheeses and cured meats. You can buy quality rugs, cheap knickers, beach beds, art and leather. For the peckish, enjoy a couple of makeshift cafés and a couple of popular ready to go spit roasted chicken vendors who will chop it, skin it and box it ready to eat. It is a real pleasure to spend a few hours here. Easy to park or take the regular bus No.2 or No.3 from central Benidorm. After a trip to this authentic local market there is a great beach to enjoy a dip in the sea or a “Menu del dia” at several good restaurants in the bay.

‘Yoga for Golfers’ - Season 2 This time it’s personal! By Tony Myles JUST AS we were sobering up from the Hogmanay celebrations Trisha Chapman arrived on the scene to make us all feel guilty about over indulging and with admonishments to improve our well-being. Trisha is a highly qualified Yoga instructor now living in Spain and offering weekly training sessions in Campbell’s shop in Ondara where the routines which she uses are designed to be of particular benefit to golfers of any age. Each session last 90 minutes and within a few weeks your golf will improve as you learn to control your breathing, improve your general suppleness and improve your posture thereby reducing the risk of back injury. You will also find that your balance improves, concentration is enhanced and stamina is increased. Campbell insists that since joining the yoga classes his “ . . putting is on fire due to a newly discovered breathing technique”. Trisha will be at the Ondara Shop every Thursday morning at 8.00 so the training will be completed before the shop opens for business. Each session costs €8 and the sixth one is free so for just €40 you can accrue significant benefits in your game.

A MAJOR WAGER The first of the Golf Majors is almost upon us and once again Campbell is offering a free and fun method of enhancing your enjoyment with 100 points to wager on your choices. THIS IS ALL YOU HAVE TO DO Select four players who you think will finish in the top five. Place a portion of your 100 points on each one - with no more than 50 points being placed on any single player. Send your entry to info@clgolf.es to arrive no later than 9.00 on the first day of the event. When the competition is concluded the wagers you have made will be multiplied by the odds offered by Wm Hill for the top five golfers and a result will be published on the Web site (www.clgolf.es) and FaceBook page, showing where you are on the leader-board. DO IT AGAIN FOR THE NEXT THREE MAJORS When the last of the Majors is finished the punter with the highest cumulative winning points will win a round of golf for two at La Sella with Campbell followed by lunch in the clubhouse.

Head 2 Head Elections Campbell - There is a lot of talk about elections these days. Tony M - It does appear to be the season for them in Spain and in the UK. Campbell - I have been told that there is one major difference between politics and golf. Tony M - What is that? Campbell - In golf you can’t improve your lie!

The ITV Sticker

AFTER A vehicle is more than four years old, or if importing a car or bike and changing plates, the car or bike must pass an ITV, the equivalent to the MOT in the UK. While in the UK the iconic Tax Disc is becoming a thing of the past, in Spain, one of three coloured, rectangular stickers can be seen on car windows, to allow for a quick inspection of the legality of a vehicle. Trafico Torrevieja note that: The sticker corresponds to the Inspección Técnica de Vehículos, or ITV for short, which displays that fact that the vehicle has passed a periodic and mandatory test of roadworthiness. There are only three colours for the ITV sticker, and each colour corresponds to a certain year: Yellow for 2014, Red for this year, 2015 or Green for 2016. Then the colours repeat themselves, thus: Yellow (2017), Red (2018), Green (2019) and so on; always using the same 3 colours. You can check your sticker for a small hole, which informs you the month when your ITV expires.” An often confusing aspect is where to display the sticker. The sticker is placed on the windscreen of cars and is regulated by Royal Decree, which states that “vehicles that have favourably passed the periodic test shall display the sticker in a conspicuous place showing, which date they must pass the next inspection.” Anybody who has been for an ITV will known that it is much like the equivalent of the M.O.T. in the U.K., albeit

with different qualifying criteria, but on passing the test the vehicle’s documents are updated, and a sticker supplied that must be displayed on the windscreen. As for where the sticker is displayed, that too is dictated by law, and it Is mandatory to place it in the upper right corner of the windscreen as you are looking out, affixed to the inside, so that the sticker can be clearly observed from the outside of the vehicle, where it will subsequently be displayed in the upper left hand side. A common question relating to this sticker is whether old ones have to remain as time goes by. The simple answer being that as the sticker is used to indicate the date of the next required test, then the answer has to be “NO”, only the current and valid sticker should be present. There is a fine for not displaying the sticker correctly, with the driver possibly being liable for an 80€ sanction, halved if paid in good time. However simply ensuring the sticker is in the right place, and valid, can avoid a lot of undue hassle during routine vehicle checks. The ITV sticker informs the police that your

ITV has been passed so if you do not display the sticker you could be stopped to check if you have carried on the ITV of your vehicle. You can find out more about driving in Spain and Traffic Law by following Trafico Torrevieja on Facebook by searching for ‘N332’.
