Pressure is on Cegas to complete works in Benidorm

by Jeanette Rice MUCH OF the centre of Benidorm, particularly the Old Town area has been crippled of late due to the laying of pipeline from the natural gas company Cegas. Although the benefits in the long run will be mains gas the disruption that has been caused has affected many local businesses with a loss of trade. Ruben Martinez, from the city’s planning said that they have been in talks with Cegas to try and ensure that the works are completed by the end of June, as July and

August are two months when works cannot be carried out and any remaining work would have to be completed from September onwards. A spokesperson from natural gas Cegas said that they have taken on many more workers to try and finish the works by the end of May. They were fully aware of the sensitivity of the situation, bearing in mind the tourist season approaching and that it was vital to a city like Benidorm to present itself in it’s best light.

SF-Inter union warns of serious problems in TRAM lines UNION REPRESENTATIVES of SF-Inter have denounced both the Labour Inspectorate in Alicante and the company that runs the TRAM Ferrocarriles de la Generalitat Valenciana (FGV) for serious deficiencies in the line. The worst affected areas are in the stations of Dénia, l’Olla d’Altea and Benidorm together with the bridges and tunnels located between Teulada, Calpe and Altea. The union says “rotten and broken sleepers”, whose role it is to ensure the stability of the trains during their journey are in a terrible condition. They went on to say “we found many rotten sleepers, broken or in poor repair which anyone taking a walk in the affected areas can see. The consequences of this are not only the discomfort for the passengers but the deterioration of the trains when repeatedly banging against the broken sleepers and damaging parts on the trains, and of course the increased risk of derailment”.

Plans for a new water treatment plant for La Nucia

EPSAR (The Public Sanitation of Waste Water for Valencia) has begun looking into the viability of a new water treatment plant. Currently water treatment for Callosa, Polop and La Nucia travel to Altea but the plant is old, and is dealing with a higher demand than when it was first built with many leaks and increasing maintenance costs. EPSAR say it is probably cheaper to build a new water treatment plant than make the necessary repairs. They are faced with two optioans, the first being the expansion of the plant, in Altea, as the demand has drastically increased, and making the repairs or building a new state of the art treatment centre. The plans for the new plant would cover Callosa d’En Sarria, Polop and La Nucia, cutting out the transfer of waste water to Altea. The project for the new treatment plant is now being researched and it is expected that in two to three months EPSAR will make their report. This will include when and where the new plant would be built, with EPSAR initially saying that it would make sense to build it in the area of La Nucia as the town lies at lower altitudes and would reduce the cost of pumping water.

“safe haven”. Knight, from Walsall, had been identified by the NCA and charity Crimestoppers in 2013 as a fugitive believed to be hiding in Spain as part of the ongoing Operation Captura initiative. He was arrested when armed officers surrounded Saffy’s Sports Bar in Calpe Port and led away in handcuffs. After appearing in a Madrid court, an extradition order was issued and he was on a plane back to the UK; spending five months behind bars on remand before his court appearance. And last Thursday a Birmingham jury found Knight guilty of conspiracy to import cocaine, a Class A drug. AIRPORT Knight went on the run from West Midlands Police following the seizure of 6kg of cocaine at Heathrow Airport in London in April 2008. Five other men were arrested at the time and were later jailed for their parts in the crime. Following the sentencing, DCI Sab Johal, of the Serious Organised Crime Unit, underlined that Knight’s capture was an example to others that the law had a very long arm. “It may sound like a cliché, but this case reinforces the message that ‘you can run, but you can’t hid’,” he said. If Knight thought that after six years he had successfully evade capture and he had dropped off our radar, then he was mistaken. “We were working with Crimestoppers, the NCA, Spanish counterparts; and last September this work came to fruition.” The detective added: “The 11 year sentence handed to Knight is justified by the severity of the sophisticated drug importation and the distribution network.”

French Air Traffic calls off strike

SINCE LAST weeks edition of the Round Town News, Eurocontrol, which coordinates European skies announced that the French ATC strike planned for 29th April until 2nd May had been cancelled. The SNCTA said it had received assurances from the government and air-traffic management but that they would be ensuring promises made were upheld.

Europe suffers every year from threats of strike action, with a similar strike, by Italian air-traffic controllers, planned for Tuesday of this week also being cancelled.

Coffee spill behind Serbian President’s airplane scare BLAMED INITIALLY on “engine failure”, a government jet carrying Serbia’s president to Italy was forced to turn back when the co-pilot spilled coffee on the instruments. by Patricia Thompson ADVISERS TO President Tomislav Nikolic described being “thrown around the cabin” when the plane, a 34-year-old French-built Falcon 50, began tumbling through the air. The plane landed safely back in Belgrade, but Nikolic was forced to cancel his official visit to meet Pope Francis in the Vatican, and his advisers put the incident down to yet another malfunction on the ageing, incident-prone aircraft. An investigation determined that the co-pilot, Bojan Zoric, had spilled coffee on the instrument panel “due to ongoing turbulence”. “I began wiping the panel and accidentally activated the ‘emergency slat’ button,” which automatically turned off the automatic pilot and the plane began losing altitude, Zoric said according to Serbia’s Civil Aviation Directorate . The pilot took over command, managed to pull the plane up and sought permission to turn back to Belgrade, Zoric added. He said that one of the engines then stopped working but was restarted on the way back to the airport. The Directorate has temporarily suspended Zoric’s license.

THE DEPARTMENT of Technical Services in Villajoyosa have reported various acts of vandalism and theft in the area. by Jeanette Rice On the Torres beach where works are being carried out thieves have attempted to steal cables, but were caught in the act by the local police. A total of 100 street lamps located in the Paseo de Vespasiano, on the Torres beach, were damaged where the cable boxes were forced and the cables removed. In La Cala thieves stole two swings and the Aguiló Tower had the door lock forced, with the police finding items indicating that someone may have spent the night and had

caused damage to the first floor of the tower. The urbanisation of Gasparot in Villajoyosa had 25 of their 33 lamps damaged with a repair bill of 4,000 euros. Jerome Lloret, councilman for Technical Services, has asked all residents to call the police immediately if they suspect someone is causing damage to public property. He said “the public spaces belong to everyone and the council needs the help of all citizens to stop and prevent all forms of vandalism”.

He went on to say “we must be aware that every repair is where something has been deliberately destroyed by someone and that the costs come out of all our pockets, we must all reject socially a few that spoil it for the many”.

El Campello waste treatment investigation

RESIDENTS IN El Campello have spent years campaigning about the effects of the odours expelled from the waste treatment plant, having to keep their windows closed because of the vile smell and also taking the lengthy step to research the effects of the quality of air, which they found to be potentially harmful. However, there is some good news, although not a permanent answer. The installation manager from the Valencian government acknowledged the results of the research and an inspection was carried out on 10th March. The findings of this inspection was that during the processing of organic rubbish into compost there was an intense smell of ammonia. FCC, who operate the facility, have announced that due to these findings, the temporary cessation of this part of the treatment facility so that the area can be cleaned thoroughly and changes made in the way the waste is treated. It is hoped that this will reduce the smell of ammonia but until the plant re-opens the residents will not know if the measures have been successful. Continued from front page The town Planning and Environment Department for Alfaz has, since 2005, been working on the reassignment of land and permits to enable the roundabouts to come into fruition. The new access to the town means that there are no longer traffic lights at the old junction into Alfaz by the tram station and a new roundabout before the tram station, town side, takes you over a new bridge onto the N332. It is anticipated that initially there will be some confused motorist but the new signs have been designed, hopefully, to assist drivers in their decisions for the new layout. The project has cost approximately 3 million euros, and as a private project has been divided between the property developers for the proposed building planned in the area. A spokesperson for the town said that this has been a severe black spot for accidents for several years and that also the new roundabouts represented a considerable improvement in the field of communications for the area.

Secondary Classrooms suffer from overcrowding by Keith Nicol

ESO SECONDARY classrooms are more crowded in the Alicante province than elsewhere. In Alicante there is a predominance of municipalities that exceed or are close to 30 students per class. Elevated ratios maybe, but this does not reach 36, the maximum legal and where numbers climbed to in 2012 when Education Minister José Ignacio Wert launched the decree of urgent measures to reduce education spending. This increase was controversial and rejected by the educational community. Albatera is the municipality that comes out top, in the province, with more overcrowded classrooms at ESO level (31.19), with Pedreguer (30.92), Petrer (29.98), Campello (29.96), Rojales (29.89), Onil (29,73) Catral (29.69), San Vicente (29.65), La Nucia (29.50) and El Campello (29.28). These are the ten most affected. In the case of the provincial capital; Alicante records a ratio of 28.76. In contrast, the lowest classroom numbers are found in the villages of Benilloba (9.50) and Orba (18). Catral also has the most overcrowded classrooms at Primary Level in the Vega Baja, followed by a municipality of L’Alacantí. Until 2012, Catral averaged 25 pupils per class but that number has slowly risen and now stands at 26.69 students per class. Those that also exceed the 25 students threshold include Bigastro (25.44) and San Vicente del Raspeig (25.52) while getting close are Torrevieja (24.87), Callosa de Segura (24.82) and El Campello, with 24.63. New data has yet to be put forward to see if there is any connection between classroom numbers and the fact that in Valencia, the failure and year repeat rate for secondary students is about 30%; one of the highest in Spain. However, while Secondary classroom figures continue to grow, some programs, such as in Torrevieja have seen new schools recently opened at Primary school level and at Primary school throughout the region, most municipalities are coping.

Brother and sister reunited through Tinder after 15 years

A BROTHER and sister who last saw each other 15 years ago have been accidentally reunited through Tinder, the online dating app. Erik de Vries, 24, and Josphine Egberts, 22, from the Netherlands, both “swiped right” on the matchmaker site, not realising they were looking at pictures of their own sibling, according to NL Times. They lost contact after their parents separated in 1999 Erik moved to Belgium with their father and brother Maarten, while Josephine remained in the Dutch city of Breda with their mother, but when they began chatting through Tinder’s text messaging service in April, Erik quickly suspected that the woman was his long-lost sister. After sharing his suspicions with Jospehine, they swapped family histories and their unlikely situation became apparent. In order to be sure, Erik, now living back in the Netherlands, arranged to meet Josephine in a cafe a week later. “When I saw him, it was suddenly very clear.” said Josephine “It was so special to see my own blood brother again after 16 years.” They now plan to stay in touch.

Dog fouls up traffic by driving tractor onto busy Scottish motorway

TRAFFIC DELAYS occurred on a busy Scottish motorway on Wednesday morning after a tractor careened out of control as a dog took to the wheel. The bizarre incident occurred at junction 13 of the M74 near Abington in South Lanarkshire The dog had reportedly leant on the controls of the tractor sending it out of the field it was ploughing and onto the motorway. The vehicle was moved to the central reservation and the dog and farmer were unhurt in the incident. Traffic Scotland updated its 85,000 followers shortly afterwards, informing them: “#M74 (N) at J13 – Route is CLEAR from earlier incident & dog is fine. Has to be the weirdest thing we’ve ever reported! No delays in area.”

Restored building in Altea returns to being a home

by Jeanette Rice ON SUNDAY La casa de lâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Hort de la Campaneta, between the blue domed buildings in Altea and which have been open to the public, returned to being a private residence. The nineteenth century finca, which is located near the train station in Altea had fallen into disrepair over many years until 2013 when the granddaughter of the last owner who inherited the property had it fully restored and then open to the public for an exhibition of photographs and paintings. The building, complete with chapel, ancient frescoes, original woodwork and pottery is now restored to its former glory, and features as a building of interest with the Altea Town Hall Tourist Department. Woman jailed for gunfire over McDonald’s order A US woman has been sentenced to three to seven years in prison for opening fire at a McDonald’s after her cheeseburger was twice served without bacon. by Patricia Thompson Shaneka Torres, 30, drew the weapon at the restaurant’s drive-through window in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in February 2014. When the snack was delivered the first time without bacon she complained to the manager, who offered her a complimentary burger on her next visit. Torres returned hours later to collect her free meal and initially seemed in good spirits, chatting up a cashier and slipping him her phone number, but then the burger arrived, again, without bacon! Before pulling the gun from her handbag, Torres allegedly said: “B****, you don’t know who you’re talking to.” The bullet shattered the drive-through window, but no one was injured. She was sentenced to one to five years for shooting at a building, plus two years for possessing a firearm during a felony. Torres must also pay $1,500 for the damage she caused

Do chimpanzees have Human Rights FOR THE first time in US history, a judge has decreed that a pair of chimpanzees are covered by the same laws that govern the detention of humans, effectively rendering the animals as legal “people”. New York Supreme Court Justice Barbara Jaffe said that the apes, held at Stony Brook University for research purposes, are covered by a writ of habeas corpus, the basic legal principle that lets people challenge the validity of their detention. The Nonhuman Rights Project, an animal rights group, wants the apes moved to a sanctuary. Jaffe has ordered a Stony Brook representative to appear in court to reply to the Nonhuman Rights Project’s petition that the animals are being held unlawfully. Regardless of whether the chimps are afforded legal personhood after the hearing, Natalie Prosin, the Nonhuman Rights Project’s executive director, said “We have scientific evidence to prove in a court of law that elephants, great apes, whales and dolphins are autonomous beings and deserve the right to bodily liberty. This strengthens our argument that these nonhuman animals are not property.”

Woman run over by husband

AN 85-YEAR-OLD Australian woman has died after being run over by her husband in a Brisbane car park. The woman was struck in the car park of the Brookside

Shopping Centre at Mitchelton, in north-west Brisbane. Paramedics said the woman was hit when she was helping her 87-year old husband to park. They tried to revive her but

she was pronounced dead at the scene. Her husband is being treated in hospital for shock. The Police Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.

Fickleness prevails I have lived on the Costa Blanca for over 15 years. I have a lovely life and have been very lucky that I have some very dear kind friends. I keep myself very much to myself and always try to stay away from trouble. I am a member of various groups which include many different nationalities. I make a conscious decision to steer clear of complete British groups. What I find sad is that it is very hard to find trustworthy people. Sitting on the sidelines I keep my eyes and ears open. There are many gossips and within the expat community there seems to always be a drama or somebody stabbing someone else in the back. People moved to Spain with there own ideas and agendas but it seems the pack mentality of an expatriate means that at times they revert back to childlike behaviour. Fickleness prevails. I feel it is sad that you have to hold a little of yourself back as being open and laying all your cards on the table sometimes gives others the red light to take advantage. I was always taught to do unto others as you would have done to yourself. The sad truth is that as an observer I have watched over the years that clearly a lot of expats have no respect for others or themselves. Jean Andrews,Mutxamel

Clever Dog I JUST loved reading about Alfie (Edition 808), the little Yorkshire Terrier who got himself rescued by the RSPCA. Ruined for a tattoo THIS IS probably too late but I have to say to all tourists to be aware of having tattoos from the Chinese massage vendors and to remember to bring your EHIC card and insurance documents with you. My neighbours brought a 21-year-old friend of their son on holiday with them. One day at the beach he had a tattoo done on his chest, by a Chinese man offering massage and tattoos. The man said it was ‘henna and harmless’- two hours later he was projectile vomiting but blamed it on the heat. He suffered two days’ illness and weird spaced-out episodes before he was taken home to the UK as everyone was so concerned (he was the only person who had

forgotten his EHIC card and insurance documents). On arrival he visited his local A&E department and after extensive tests he was told that he had toxic poisoning from the ink used on the tattoo. They told him it could have been fatal had he not returned home. He is now suffering with mental illness and may have to be admitted for treatment in a specialist hospital. I am telling you this as told to me by my neighbour but I think I have read about someone suffering adverse effects from a tattoo before. This young man’s life may be ruined for a tattoo. Local Police in Finestrat talk to students about bullying On Tuesday, the Local Police of Finestrat visited pupils in the 5th and 6th year of CEIP Puig Campana School. by Jeanette Rice The aim of the visit was to discuss problems relating to bullying in the classroom and about responsible use of the internet. The talk was given by the Chief of Police, Inspector Agustin Rublo and was divided into two parts lasting two hours. The first part was spent dealing with the increased rate of bullying and the early age in which it can start, teaching awareness, detection and prevention.

The second part focused on responsible social networking and communications through mobile and internet use. The Councillor for Public Safety, Thomas Sellés hopes to organise further sessions for parents and teachers, to show them first hand the technologies and tools to help manage their children’s social netPolice working, and hopefully avoid talking to students future problems.

The Waterboys, The Animals and Loquillo to perform in La Nucia FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 18th will see The Waterboys, The Animals and Loquillo all perform in one concert in La Nucia. by Jeanette Rice The Waterboys, a British Celtic band was formed in 1983 by Scottish musician Mike Scott and are known for their hits such as “Fisherman’s Blues “,” The Whole Of The Moon “ and “ A Girl Called Johnny “. The band will also perform songs from their latest album “Modern Blues”. In the last twenty-four years The Waterboys have had thirteen albums and 51 musicians, led by Mike Scott. This will be the second performance of the Waterboys in La Nucia, who played in the Mediatic Festival in 2008.

THE LEADER of Benidorm’s Ciudadanos is to ride a Vespa to Madrid to call for the resort to be officially recognised as a tourist destination and receive government financial support.

Rafa Gasent will set off for the capital on Sunday 3rd May and will lobby Congress asking for a change in the law. His journey will emulate the epic ride by former Mayor Pedro Zaragoza – considered the father of modern Benidorm – who rode a scooter to Madrid to win the approval of General Franco for bikinis to be worn on the town’s beaches. Mr Gasent, who is the party’s candidate for mayor in next month’s elections, believes changing the status of Benidorm could win it a million Euros to compensate demands on its budget made by millions of visitors each year. “No one understands why Benidorm is not considered a tourist town,” said the politician. “The word ‘tourism’ was invented in Benidorm.” The resort stands third in the league for overnight stays in Spain yet has failed to attract a change in its status and win much-needed subsidies. Mr Gasent hit out at politicians who had failed to address the problem for a decade and said his party was prepared to speak out at local, regional, and national level, to challenge “unjust issues like this”.

Monasteries and mosques HISTORY LOVING members of AMUX stepped back in time to enjoy guided tours of a historic monastery and a mosque to turn pages in Valencia’s history. by Jack Troughton Alfred Serrano Donet and Alma Dorndorf – both members of the Friends of the Museum of Xabia – pooled their expertise to insure fellow AMUX colleagues were able to enjoy the stories of the Royal Monastery of Santa Maria, at Simat de Valldigna and the Mosque of La Xara. Alfred is from the Simat area where the religious building stands and has carried out extensive studies of the monastery and mesquita. A history teacher, his recent talk to the association about the sites served to whet the appetites of members, who signed up for last Saturday’s trip. Built in Cisterian style, the monastery was founded in 1298 by King Jaime II ‘The Just’ and was in use until 1835. In 1991, it was acquired by the Valencia government and is being restored to its former glory. And the mosque at La Xara is considered one of the most important remnants of the Muslim religion within the ancient kingdom of Valencia. Built in around the 15th Century, it remained in use until 1525 when all Muslims in Spain were required to convert to Christianity. It is now dedicated to

Santa Ana. Alfred’s colleague Alma was able to help translate both his explanations and the official guides to both sites, increasing the enjoyment of English-speaking members of the society. AMUX – Amics de Museu de Xabia – brings together people of all nationalities with an interest in the history and archaeology of Javea and the Marina Alta. The money raised will enable the Society for the Care of Animals in Need to continue its work rescuing and re-homing cats and dogs.

Alfaz del Pi theatre in English ALFAZ DEL Pi Department of Education arranged for more that 600 students this week to watch a theatre production in English. by Jeanette Rice Pupils from primary and secondary schools in Alfaz del Pi were treated to performances by the theatre company La Tourne Teatre. For the younger audience there was a show with comedy, songs and very likeable characters, encouraging the pupils to join in and interact with the actors which was received well and talks at the end of the show being held in English. For the older pupils the theatre company did an adaptation of “Frankenstein”, written by Mary Shelly. The show combined suspense and comedy and also ended with the students and actors debating in English. This initiative is aimed at expanding the pupils language skills and each year the council organizes three theatrical performances in Castellano, Valenciano and English, for students to reinforce their learning of these languages through fun.

Finca Guila (Benidorm) Bowls Club, Ladies Pairs, and Open Mixed Triples TWO OF Finca Guila lady members took the honours in the Ladies Pairs at this year’s Costa Blanca Bowling Association´s Champion of Champions Event. Sandie Thompson and Dee Lane played well all week to reach the final which they won in a nail-biting finish 15-14. The week before the event, Finca Guila held their annual Open Mixed Triples over 3 days. The Open, consisting of 36 triple teams was very well run by Jerry Bartley. On the last day the final was played between J. McLaughlin (El Cid), T. Corner (BBC) & C. Scott (El Cid) and E. Bell, G. Dawson & R. Bell (All Bonalba). Both teams played well to win their groups and the high standard of bowling carried over to the final which was won, after an extra end, by Roli Bell´s team from Bonalba. Afterwards, Jerry thanked the competitors, umpires, spectators and the management who had worked hard providing food and drink. In one of his first acts at the helm of the chaplaincy, Father Marcus chaired the annual parish meeting, held at the Esmeralda hotel in Calpe and presented his “powerful vision” for the church, encompassing both growth and strength, reflecting the family of God and the work to be done to serve the Costa Blanca community. A challenge for the dedicated gardener/s in the family. A garden that looks great from wherever one stands or sits at all times of the year for with an outdoor lifestyle you will live within it and not just view it through rain splashed windows as so often happens in northern Europe. Hideaways for peaceful reads and siestas. Areas for children and grandchildren to play safely without constant supervision. Bank identity crisis looms

BANK ACCOUNTS could be frozen if customers fail to provide up-to-date personal data under Spanish laws designed to combat money laundering and financing terrorism. The country’s banks must collect the information before the 30th April deadline – yet the obligation to keep digital records of clients’ personal data was introduced in a law passed in 2010 and gave five years to complete the task. There are around 70 million bank accounts in Spain and some 50 million of these are held by private individuals – leaving the sector with a mammoth task. However, claims that some five million clients are without the correct data are hotly disputed by banks. “We’re all prone to leaving things to the last minute,” admitted Jose Maria Roldan, President of the Spanish Banking Association – saying the affected bodies in the finance sector were now working round the clock to meet the deadline. Spaniards need to supply a DNI national identity card; foreign residents are required to show their residency card or passport.

OBLIGATION Banks have an obligation to contact customers. Clients who have not received any notification can assume no further action is necessary and their details are already with their bank. However, problems could arise if the contact details held by a bank are out of date and the client is out of reach before the deadline. Accounts could be frozen on 1st May. RTN was told by a banking source: “Obviously, when a client turns in their ID, the account will be activated again.” Banks attempted to extend the deadline but were refused by the government. Madrid noted: “banks had the obligation to collect and conserve copies of their clients’ ID since 1993. “The 2010 law expressly established that electronic records had to be kept to avoid documents getting misplaced. In 2010, they were given a five-year period to obtain that digitalised information.”

CHANCELLOR GEORGE Osborne has said earlier this week that he intends to sell billions of pounds of government shares in Lloyds Banking Group to small investors if the Conservative Party wins the UK election. BRITAIN’S GOVERNMENT bailed out Lloyds with £20billion pounds of public money at the height of the financial crisis in 2009 buying 43 per cent of the bank and has since sold almost half of this back to large investors raising £9billion and leaving it with a 22 per cent holding. Writing in the Sunday Telegraph newspaper (19/04/2015), Osborne stated investors would be able to buy between £250 and £10,000 of Lloyds shares, with priority going to orders of up to £1,000. He added that shares will be sold at a 5 per cent discount to market value, and investors who hold their shares for a year would receive an extra 10 per cent, up to a value of £200. As with previous Lloyd’s sales, the shares will only be sold at a price of at least 73.6p each, the price paid during the bailout, and the proceeds will be used to reduce Britain’s national debt. Lloyds’ shares on the FTSE 100 index shares closed at 78.75p on Friday. This is following the announcement in the budget that the first £1,000 of interest from savings would be tax free from April 2016 (£500 for higher rate taxpayers) with banks

and building societies automatically paying out gross interest from April 2016 not deducting any tax. How this will affect the ex-pat living in Spain is unclear but at the moment if you are a fiscal resident you would have to pay the tax through your returns to the Hacienda as normal. At the moment the most tax efficient way of investing for the expat is through Spanish Compliant Bonds. 65+ Guaranteed Bonds offered in the UK offer a 4% gross return over 3 years or 2.8% gross over 1 year but most importantly the investment is 100% safe. Get back money paid buying ‘Off Plan’ in Spain. No win no fees. OVER THE last few years our firm has helped many families recover the money paid to developers for the purchase of new properties off plan. Some of these successful cases have been reported in the media. THE BANKS where promoters had their accounts, in which the buyers-consumers paid the money for buying properties off plan, are responsible for returning the money paid to the buyers, if: The property is not handed over, and If the developer - promoter has not provided the guarantees prescribed by law 57/68, to guarantee the money paid by buyers, i.e: when there is no bank guarantee or insurance policy, to cover the amounts paid on account. This is because, according to the Law 57/68, banks are responsible and should make sure that the guarantees (bank guarantee or insurance policy) are contracted when opening a special account for a developer, in order to receive money. There are many court precedents, in today’s article, we want to highlight the recent judgment of 16 January 2015 (No. of Appeal: 2336/2013), of the Spanish Supreme Court, which confirmed two important issues: 1. The bank who received the money in its special account, is responsible for returning the money to the buyer-consumer, if the developer does not hand over the property, and if the money paid is not guaranteed otherwise, even if the buyer does not have an individual bank guarantee. 2.-The limitation period ( deadline) to start a legal action against the bank is 15 years, as it is understood that the bank’s liability arises from breach of the Law 57/68, and is a result of contract relation, thus the contractual liability deadline applies. The judgment mentioned, from our High Court, is very important, and confirms the legal possibilities for all those who have paid some money buying a property off plan, that was never handed over, asking the bank where the promoter received the money to return the money paid, even if the developer has disappeared, is in bankruptcy, etc. To assist consumers in this situation, our firm offers to waive our own Law Society fees for clients in a “no win no fees” deal, meaning that only if the case is won would we charge our legal fees as per the Law Society, and if not, the only expense our office would need to charge would be a small provision to cover necessary unavoidable administrative expenses. ALICANTE IS the regions capital city and the 2nd largest city in the Valencian community and it is a definite “must visit” whilst holidaying here on the Costa Blanca. Alicante is steeped in history and offers so much to see & do. The architecture in Alicante is simply stunning and the city has plenty of coffee-shop-lined squares, beautiful parks & interesting museums, not to mention the shops. The only thing you will struggle with, is time to get round and see them all. Whilst in Alicante, one thing that you cannot miss is a trip up to the Castel of Santa Barbara that stands high over the city on the Mount Benacantil. The origins of the castle date back as far as the 9th century when the region was under Muslim control, but through the years, the Castle has been occupied by both the English & French in its more colourful days and it was even used as a prison before being opened to the public back in 1963. The views from the castles turrets are breathtaking and it is only from here that you can really appreciate the true scale and beauty of the city of Alicante that lies below. Alicante has one of the most beautiful promenades in Spain, called the Explanada de España which is lined by palm trees and laid with six and a half million marble tiles that give waves of colour, running as far as the eye can see. The promenade runs the lengths of the port area which is filled with yachts of the rich and famous and even has a full scale replica of one of Spain´s most famous galleons, the” Santisima Trin idad” that fought in the battle of Trafalgar and was once the biggest and most heavily armed ship in the world. The replica of this great ship is used as a floating bar & restaurant and gives a relaxing, if not different environment, to enjoy a spot of lunch or your favourite tipple. If you like museums then Alicante has over twelve of them offering everything from archaeology to ocean racing, bull fighting, contemporary art and the famous fallas and their colourful statues. Prices of the museums range from free entrance to just a few Euros a head and they are definitely worth a look.

Mad Max! Mad Tom! and Mad Charlize!

So much of the movie business is built on the synthetic process of directors, writers and actors creating a celluloid dream sequence they believe will convert into great masses of us beating the door down to take a look see. Having said that, thankfully every now and then films gets made with a deep sense of passion for the art of movie making, and in so many cases, films made this way turn out to be hugely successful. I found an interview Charlize Theron gave to Esquire last week on this very subject, and I would suggest you wear protective gloves as you proceed as it sizzles a little. Charlize has just completed the shooting of Mad Max: Fury Road alongside Tom Hardy, and on her relationship filming with him on the back of a trailer for six and a half months she said “we f**kin’ went at it, yeah, on other days, he and George Miller, the director went at it, it was the isolation, the fact that we were stuck in a rig for the entire shoot, we shot a war movie on a moving truck!” Tom Hardy already has a reputation for being difficult to work with after the punch-up he had with Shia LaBeouf on the set of Lawless leaked out, about which he said “I’m not unreasonable, but if somebody hurts me I lash out in order to get them to stop!” yep, that’s pretty in your face Tom. However there are seeds of a happy ending to this story after Charlize admitted “I think good actors go all the way into the deep dark corners of what emotional truth is, and it’s that that makes it the magic that it is.” Not the best grammar in the world there Charlize, but we know what you mean honeybun! Steven Spielberg is to work for the first time with Disney filming Roald Dahl´s book The BFG (Big Friendly Giant). It’s about the BFG helping the fight against evil giants who are partial to eating children, not a comedy then. Due out next summer, Penelope Wilton, who won Best Actress last week for her role as Isobel Crawley in Downton Abbey will play the Queen of England in the movie.

The film will go into production soon, mostly in Italy, and the word is that Clint Eastwood is to be the director, heavy duty stuff indeed!

Can’t say no We recently moved to Spain. My brother and his young family have just come to stay with us for a two week holiday. He has now informed me that he is coming out for the whole of the six weeks school summer holidays, as he says it’s the best holiday he’s ever had. We are very easy-going and generous people, and like to have visitors stay, but my brother didn’t even offer to pay for a meal out, as a thank you. We don’t want to offend them, and are finding it difficult to say no. When relatives move to Spain, invitations to come and stay, are often extended. But your brother is taking advantage of you, and you must say something, otherwise the same thing may happen the next time school holidays come around. If you don’t want to say anything, you could try turning your spare room in to an office, or suggest that your brother rents a nearby Apartment, otherwise, your life will never be your own. Last week I was contacted by a very nice lady called Dorothy, in response to the story of the gentleman who had lost his wife recently. Touched by his letter, and herself affected by the loss of a loved one, Dorothy told me about a Bereavement Group called ‘Friends After Bereavement‘, of which she is a member. The group meet every Saturday at the Cartorce Bar in Benijofar between 2pm and 4pm. The

Group offers friendship, help and support to the bereaved. The 16 strong members, five of them men, also organise social activities and outings, and I am told they have just done some much needed fund raising for Cancer Research. We feel we’re losing her My daughter is 21, and has a new boyfriend. Since she met him, she has not spent much time with the family. When it came to booking our usual family holiday with ourselves and her younger sister, she said she preferred to go away with her boyfriend this year. I can’t see why she can’t spend time with us as a family anymore. We also don’t approve of her boyfriend, and told her we wouldn‘t want him along. We all feel we are losing her. When children grow up and reach adulthood, the family unit inevitably changes. It is natural that once we meet a partner, we want to spend as much time with that person as possible. You are asking that your daughter attends family holidays, but her boyfriend is not welcome. In doing this, you are making her choose, and she will naturally lean toward her boyfriend, and her future. My advice is to welcome her boyfriend in to the family, don’t put any more objections or stipulations in her way, and in time, she should return to the fold. Write to Sara in confidence. HI AUNTY: Can you advise me as to what wifi printer I can use with the Ipad air. I do not have another computer or lap top. The cheapest one that I have found is a HP DJ 2540 but there seems some confusion as to whether I need a laptop to register initially. Regards, Trevor Aunty says: Most “wireless” printers can be set up without a PC or laptop. But most do rely on WPS - to allow quick connection between the printer and router - and a quick look at the printers manual (on the HP website) confirms this. So check first that your router has a WPS button to allow the connection to be made. And perhaps just to make sure, send HP an email asking them to confirm if it can be set up without a PC or laptop... Response: Thanks for the info, really appreciate it.

Help with laptop

DEAR AUNTY: I wonder if you could help me with my laptop? For the last few days I’ve been getting a message: ‘machineld creator.app.error.report contents.c/documents/admin/locals’. It also mentions ‘avast/avquidx.dll’? I would appreciate your help in this matter. Many thanks - Noel. Aunty says: My investigations suggest the error message from ‘machine id creator’ actually comes from AVG - another anti-virus program. It would suggest that you have the remnants of a previously installed AVG, and this is conflicting with your Avast (hence the ‘avast/avquidx.dll’). So your previous AVG has not been fully uninstalled, or you still have part of that installation, like AVG toolbar, still installed. And the two anti-virus programs are conflicting, hence the error message. So I think you would need to clean up whichever program you wish to use, and make sure the other is not installed, or has any parts left.

Security alert not working DEAR AUNTY: I am using Windows Vista with a paid AVG Internet Security and its antivirus package. On the right hand taskbar below, a window kept popping up saying, ‘Windows Security Alerts has been turned off’. When I checked the Windows Security Essential page, indeed the security alert had turned off. I clicked ‘Turn On’’security alert but it won’t work. My concern is, do you think AVG Internet Security had turned it off while installing the software? If not how do I turn it on again? I have asked online help but Microsoft told me they are monitoring... Please help, Aunty. Aunty says: It may simply be a reporting issue between AVG and the Windows Security system. It is known that the Windows Security system does not always work with some Antivirus programs, and although Windows says there is no Antivirus installed, the Antivirus can be installed and working properly. As long as AVG says it is working and active, then it should not be a problem. But if you want to, you can always uninstall and

Last week, the sixty-one participating bars, cafes and restaurants reported serving thousands of normal tapas and drinks for just two euros and hundreds more of their Gourmet tapas for just fifty cents more. Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin

Direct Object Pronouns – use of “le” and “les” AT PRESENT we are looking at an area of Spanish language which is basic, but at the same time rather fiddly. It is one of those areas where we really do have to accept certain things without necessarily understanding them fully and one where it takes a while to build up the whole picture. So far we have explained in some detail exactly what a direct object pronoun is, what its equivalent is in English and how it is used in most cases in Spanish. Last week I skirted around a particular aspect, which is what happens to the direct object pronoun in the third person, and also what happens when the object is “usted” or “ustedes” (the formal “you” which uses the same forms as the third person). We have established that the usual direct object pronoun in the third person is “lo” for masculine and “la” for feminine, and this is technically true when referring to people as well as for things. However, in many forms of spoken Spanish there is a tendency to replace “lo” with “le”, particularly when referring to people. (The word “le” exists correctly as something else we’re not learning yet). Exactly the same phenomenon occurs in the third person plural, which sometimes substitutes “los” for “les” when referring to people rather than things. This can be very confusing when we learn that “lo” is correct, and then see that sometimes it changes to “le” for no apparent reason. Even more confusing is when teachers and books insist that “lo” is the only possibility but then you discover that the Spanish themselves use the two words apparently interchangeably. Also, believe me, if you ask your average Spanish person to explain why they’ve used the word “le” instead of “lo” in a particular sentence, they won’t be able to. The simplest explanation is that although it is technically incorrect to use

“le” as a direct object pronoun, the use has become so common, particularly in certain parts of the country, that it is now generally regarded as acceptable. If you think that is horrible, just be aware that the same thing happens in English as well, and is all part of the evolution of languages. Certain things creep into speech which the purists jump up and down about because they are incorrect, but in the end they become so common that everyone accepts them and forgets they were wrong in the first place. (Just two examples: the tendency nowadays to say “if I was you” instead of “if I were you” and “If I would have known” instead of “if I had known). You may think I’m making a lot of fuss about nothing, particularly if you didn’t know there was a problem in the first place, but in fact as we move on and learn more of these little words, they can become a bit of a nightmare if you don’t realize these basic truths, so the best thing is to store the information in your mind for future recall. You can put it in that folder labeled “things Jane says will be important later on”. Here’s a summary which therefore needs to be tacked onto the bottom of the list of direct object pronouns in last week’s article. *le: him / you (m. usted) - les: them (people) / you (m. ustedes) (*when 3rd person masculine refers to people, it is very common in European Spanish to use le/les instead of lo/los) This oddity only applies to the masculine form. The feminine remains “la” and “las” for people and things when they are direct objects. What we haven’t mentioned yet are “indirect object pronouns” (of which “le” and “les” are actually examples), but don’t worry, we’re not going to do that for a while! Next week we will go back to real examples of Spanish sentences to put all this into place. Bet you can’t wait!

Emotional Support for Teenagers READERS MAY have heard of the work of the Samaritans but may not know that the Samaritans also operate a support service across the whole of Spain and can support youngsters at school, and not just adults who may need their help. The Samaritans receive many enquiries from people of all ages, from younger teenagers to those well into their old age, with a range of different problems. Contrary to popular belief, only 1% of callers are those with suicidal feelings. Increasing numbers of younger people are emailing or phoning the helpline about a range of issues which affect them, and are offered a confidential support service. The Samaritansâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; main aim is to listen to callers in a

non-judgemental and supportive way. Posters and leaflets have been sent to over 50 schools who are members of the Association of British Schools in Spain to raise awareness among younger people that Samarians in Spain can help them deal with all sorts of issues. There are some surprises this week that help you to see what could be, rather then your current defensive stance that does you no favours whatsoever. Believe and trust in yourself above all and bring it all on! Three actions of the Sun affect you greatly in the week ahead. The first action with Saturn is revealing and should excite you. Ceres calls time, midweek, on the ending of a project that wasn’t going anywhere; and finally Neptune intervenes to establish solvency and balance in a situation that veers out of control. WE ARE all Spirit, living in a body and the body ages, withers and dies. That is the due process of life and it does of course have its variations, its intrigues and its quirks. The soul of each body survives the transition to the Spirit World and what happens next is really up to us, just as with life there are choices to make, things to do, communication to master. We can look back at our Earthly life and spot where we went wrong. Whenever the subject of past wrongs rears its head there comes a reason as to why we acted in the way that we did and where it got us and what happened, and it is now too late to make changes that are anchored and rooted in the past. We cannot re write the past, and we are substantially living in the present which cannot change, it is only the future that can and will embrace any changes that we decide to make. Change just for change sake is pointless and hubris, but when we take on the energies that are brimming within us, then change can play the most important part in ringing in what needs to be. Surprises often test us and allow us to adapt to the needs of a busy life amidst the backdrop of true innovation, invention and intention. Each year brings changes that show us a new impetus, just as it is good to look back and see natural progress being made; making the difference we can, and learning, always for the future. If you can spend time to think of others, no matter what your needs may be, you will be rewarded for your actions in the clarity and transparency of doing a job well. If we have problems, and we do, then it isn’t too hard to perceive that there are some rather worse off than we are. Cold comfort? I am often told that we are all in the same boat, but this is currently blatantly untrue in a differing World, and it is for sure

that we would not wish to open a can of worms as we weave our way through the fabric of our lives. The rich tapestry of good and bad is interwoven and punctuated by our commitment and dedication and all that we do is fueled by love, and always will be. I see so many people these days who have almost given up, become complacent or falsely appear content though they quite clearly are not. Here Spirit can make one hell of a difference. You cannot be alone when you are in the arms of an all embracing Spiritual Energy. Friends, Loved ones, Family may come and go, but we all radiate energy from the depths of our spirituality. Loving ourselves is compulsory, but for some the love has gone and for a few it is hard to claw back that which we deserve but maybe cannot handle for various reasons. A dear client of mine has had to stand back and see her beloved partner disappear from her life with a premature Senility. In fact her husband no longer knows who she is and stares vacantly at her whenever they meet. She has been told that he will never ever change and there is not even a glimmer of hope. Needing 24 hour nursing and care, husband is fortunately getting all of the attention that he needs with dedicated professionals in wonderful surroundings. Mindful of her vows and though still married, my client was racked with guilt that she had taken on a boyfriend. She felt that she was turning her back on her husband, but she is needy and has such a lot of living ahead of her. I told her that Spirit had intervened to bring this new partner into her life, because if something hadn’t happened then she too would have closed the doors to her heart, and there was still so much loving in there. Frightened to tell her daughter what was happening, the response was classic. Daughter and Mother cried tears of joy, sad to lose such a wonderful man from their lives, as father and husband, but happy to have the blessing of love that unites them in wanting the very best for each other. Love never dies, but only the soul survives, so make it a happy one, whatever, if you can?

The Rules Regarding A–Frames IF YOU have a motorhome and you want to bring your car to Spain, you have to be aware that A-Frames are forbidden in Spain, so you will need a trailer to carry your car. The law, which legislates in this matter, is the “Reglamento General de Circulación”, and applies to all vehicles that are in Spain. The same rule applies whether you are a resident or on holiday in Spain with a motorhome with a foreign number plate. Often, motorhomes carry auxiliary vehicles, usually bicycles, a moped or small motorcycle. This practice is authorized provided an approved bicycle rack or a platform for this purpose is used and, when projecting out from the usual characteristics of the motorhome, the following requirements as provided in Article 15 of the Reglamento General de Circulación are met. After frequent questions regarding the possibility of a motorhome towing a car, this possibility is prohibited in Article 9.3 of the Reglamento General de Vehículos which prohibits the movement of a motor vehicle towing another, unless there is an immediate risk of damage or injury and it cannot be dragged by another vehicle specifically designed for that purpose, in which case it is allowed only to the nearest place where it will not hinder traffic movement and provided that it is not on a motorway. Not withstanding the points already mentioned, a combination of vehicles consisting of a motor and a trailer or semi-trailer on which another vehicle can be transported is permitted if the set qualifies for driving on public roads and is approved to Directives 70/156/CEE and 94/20/CEE and they do not exceed the maximum length allowed for these sets which is 18.75 meters and 16.50 meters in the case of a semi-trailer.
