Benidorm police officers suffer in the heat WITH TEMPERATURES soaring into the 30’s Benidorm’s local police force are still having to patrol the streets in their winter uniforms.
by Jeanette Rice The long sleeved uniforms are issued to the officers for winter use with a summer option normally being issued prior to the warmer weather arriving, however, it would appear that the quick change in the temperatures has caught the council off guard who have not yet provided them with the short-sleeved polo shirts that they need. The Professional Union of Local Police and Fire Service (SPPLB) spokesperson, Francisco González said “the lack of organisation and foresight from the council is appalling”. The oversight appears to have been caused by a modification in the uniforms which have undergone a change from a two colour
Winter uniforms
uniform to a dark blue only one. The council invested approximately 100,000 euros in November last year to make the switch but only part of the uniform packages were supplied to the police officers. The council spokesperson, José Marcet, said that “it was only a matter of days before the officers would be issued with their summer uniform and that the delay had come from putting the work out to tender before finally choosing El Corte Ingles to supply the clothing”. The company has now been asked not to wait until an order is complete, but to send what is available on an ongoing basis.
Media Markt grand opening ceremony A PRIVATE opening ceremony preceded the opening of the new store to the public last week. The new store, which is now open from 8am until 10pm is 2,500 square metres in size and offers over 45,000 products saw queues forming in a bid to grab some bargains. Store Manager, Alberto Martinez, was excited and amazed at the turnout from the general public, and together with his staff and the waiting customers a countdown began for the long awaited opening. Scenes similar to that of English sale days saw the doors open and the queueing customers rush through in a bid to gain the heavily reduced items that they had been waiting for. Once the lucky customers had made their purchases the store had put into place a customer service feedback system unlike any other, where they could push a ‘happy’ or ‘not happy’ button. The ‘happy’ button was on the verge of wearing away. This is the 75th Media Markt store to open Spain, with the Finestrat store offering a ‘stop and go’ service as operated in many English chains, where you are able to order on line and simply call in at the store to collect your order.

Nepal suffers second earthquake A MAGNITUDE 7.3 earthquake shook parts of Nepal on Tuesday, collapsing buildings and killing at least 125 in an area still struggling to recover from last month’s destructive earthquake which killed more than 8,000 people. by Jeanette Rice IT BROUGHT fresh fears to the people that have been terrified since the initial quake, a 7.8-magnitude tremor occurred on April 25. Earthquake destruction
At least three further major landslides were triggered in an area which suffered the highest death toll from last months earthquake in Sindhupalchowk. Tuesday’s quake was centred about 47 miles north east of the Nepalese capital and much closer to the Mt. Everest base camp. The tremor was felt as far away as New Delhi in India. Experts in the field, USGS (United Stated Geological Survey) have warned that the threat of further strong aftershocks in the next coming months is a high possibility and officials have demanded that residents leave their damaged buildings, fearing more will collapse with the expected large aftershocks. Rescue teams from around the world were still working around the clock, trying to clear rubble and remove bodies, when this second earthquake hit. With the monsoon season due imminently aid workers are warning that time is running out to rebuild what was destroyed and that the Nepalese victims were in desperate need of shelter. Efforts to deliver relief aid have been marred by the closure of Nepal’s main runway and once the monsoon season hits the hundreds of thousands of displaced citizens who do not have adequate shelter face a bleak future with concerns that the death toll will rise further. Thunderstorms are already arriving ahead of heavy rains making it more difficult to gain access by road and red tape has also slowed the relief effort according to UN humanitarian chief Valerie Amos who had received reports that customs was taking such a long time in clearing the emergency aid goods.

So long, sucker STEVE EASTON can finally breathe easy after he sneezed out part of a toy dart that had been stuck up a nostril for more than 40 years. Steve, 51, often had the sniffles or a headache and put it down to hay fever, but his nasal passages are now clear for the first time since childhood. When he sneezed, out flew the sucker tip of a toy dart, about the size of a penny. Steve told his mother, Pat, and was amazed to find that at the age of seven she had taken him to hospital thinking he had inhaled the dart. Pat, 77, had found little Steve playing with his dart gun at home in Camberley, and noticed a rubber tip was missing. She said: “I took him to the hospital and they looked for it but then said perhaps it was a mistake. It’s always worried me and now it has suddenly shot out. We are all shocked.” Easton has suffered from the sniffles all his life but as far as he is aware the sucker has caused him no other health issues. “My doctor was amazed but said there had been no harm done. It’s just one of those things,” said Steve. “It had been there for 44 years. I was completely unaware of it.”

Seville plane crash Plane crash
AN AIRBUS military plane crashed near Seville airport on Saturday killing four people and injuring several others, two seriously. by Jeanette Rice THE PLANE, a new Airbus A400M reportedly developed a fault not long after it took off on its test flight, with its Spanish Airbus employees. Locals reported that the black smoke could be seen from several kilometres away and one of the emergency workers said that the Airbus had mostly been reduced to ash. The remains of the Airbus could be seen in a field near the San Pablo airport in Seville with initial reports saying that the plane had hit an electric cable and was trying to make an emergency landing. Survivors were rushed to the local hospi-
tal by helicopter as authorities began immediately an investigation into the incident. This particular plane, a large transport aircraft, was on its test flight prior to being delivered to Turkey. Spain has 27 of the Airbus A400M aircraft’s on order, with the first delivery due next year, to replace its fleet of ageing Hercules aircraft’s. The British Ministry of Defence has temporarily suspended the use of its two A400M Airbuses as a precautionary measure whilst the investigation takes place.

Alfaz del Pi officials accused of extortion ON MONDAY afternoon Guardia Civil officers arrested two officials who were responsible for collecting the market stall fees from the stallholders, in response to allegations made of extortion. The two men, arrested at their homes, were taken to the Guardia Civil station where they were questioned throughout the night. One of the accused was then released whilst the other was held for further questioning. Facing possible charges of corruption, bribery and extortion the two men have been accused of asking for up to 2,000 euros from stallholders to obtain their town hall licence and also to gain better positioning on the markets. It is believed that one of the stallholders recorded their conversation with the market official and then made the report to the Guardia Civil.

Eight year old boy found alive in a suitcase BORDER CONTROL officers in place between Morocco and the Spanish enclave of Cueta got more than they bargained for when they stopped a woman behaving suspiciously.
Friday, May 15 - Thursday, May 21 2015

X ray of case
by Keith Nicol Guardia Civil agents observed a 19 year old woman’s reluctance to pass through the border control area and stopped her for questioning. Suspecting that the woman may be carrying illegal substances of some kind the agents placed the suitcase on the conveyor to go through the x-ray machine. As the case went through the image appeared of the suitcase and contents on the screen and the agents were amazed to see the figure of a young child. When the guards opened the suitcase, the boy emerged scared and confused, telling them that his name was Abou, he was 8 years old and came from the Ivory Coast. The woman accompanying the young boy, a Moroccan national was promptly arrested and the child handed over to Spain’s child protection services. A spokesperson for the Guardia Civil said that “the child was very distressed and the situation could have ended tragically”. Less than two hours later the Guardia Civil stopped a man, who was originally from the Ivory Coast but now resided in the Canary Islands, and showed him photos of the young boy where upon he admitted that the child was his son. The man who was also then arrested, said that he just wanted to have his son live with him in the Canary Islands. Further investigations revealed that the 19 year old woman was not related to the child and that there was a strong possibility that she had been paid by the boys father to smuggle him into Spain. As Spanish authorities step up efforts to crack down on the migrants, many have become more creative, resorting to stowing away in false-bottom cars or in shipping containers.

Solar panels offer new technology for bars and cafes
TEXTIL ENERGY, based in Valencia has announced that it has invented a 20 watt solar panel which will allow customers to charge their phones whilst sitting out on the terraces of their local establishment. The energy company detailed how the panels could be fitted to terrace furniture such as parasols due to the flexibility of the material which can adapt to different shapes and sizes. With the panel being placed on the parasol an electric junction box is added to the parasol pole which has three USB ports enabling customers to charge their mobile devices, tablets etc. The new technology enables the bars to offer the facility without accumulating a large electricity bill, and would encourage customers to stay in the bar or cafe rather than returning home because their battery is low.

A costly lesson THINGS DID not get off to a good start for Newington Cricket Club – on tour from Kent to play against Sporting Alfaz at the Woodbridge Oval in Albir. by Irena Bodnarec The 21 man team flew into Alicante on Wednesday morning, collecting their hire vehicles at the airport before heading off on the AP7 motorway to Albir. The team were booked into the Albir Gardens aparthotel, conveniently located a stones throw from the ground. On arrival they found that they couldn´t check into their rooms until 2pm – normal policy for most hotels, but were told that they were welcome to use the pool and facilities. One of the hire vehicles contained the team’s five cricket bags with kit as well as personal luggage – which they left in the vehicle. Lance Morgan – Captain of the team who has been playing cricket for the last 50 years says that they were not offered facilities to store their luggage inside the hotel
until their rooms were ready, but the hotel disputes this. The boys then went to enjoy the pool and at around 3pm returned to the vehicle – which was parked within the hotel grounds, to retrieve their luggage and check in – to find it broken into and empty! The team estimates that around ten thousand pounds worth of kit and possessions were taken – including two passports and jewelry, left in the vehicle as they didn´t want to leave them around the pool unattended. They have subsequently discovered that the sporting equipment is not covered on their travel insurance – and with bats costing well over 150GBP each, a dire loss. Some of the team members were left with nothing except the clothes that they were standing in and so were taken to Carrefour
Newington Cricket Club
to buy some emergency replacement items. Katie Dell of Hotels.TV who was the booking agent for the group waivered the commission due to the company to enable the boys to make their purchases – a gesture greatly appreciated by Lance and the team. Additionally, two of the team had to spend a morning at the British Consulate to obtain emergency travel documents to allow them to fly back – costing €137 each as well as the inconvenience of applying for a new pass-
port on their return. A spokesperson for the hotel has said that they will look into the feasibility of installing CCTV cameras in the car park following the incident, but stated that they have never had any thefts like this reported to them. The moral of the story is do not under any circumstances leave valuables in locked cars thinking they are safe – fortunately it didn´t spoil their tour too much and the team hope to come back again.

Letter to Cameron RE-ELECTED PRIME Minister David Cameron has been asked to take immediate action to keep his manifesto promise and scrap the ’15 year rule’ over expat voting. by Jack Troughton Last week’s General election returned a Conservative Government and has sparked rumours of an early ‘in out’ referendum over membership of the European Union – giving the issue some urgency. Campaigner Harry Shindler, the 93-year-old veteran of the Second World War and currently living in Italy, lobbied Mr Cameron as the leader of the last coalition government. And in a later dated 28th January this year, the Premier assured Harry of the Conservative “pledge” that if the party won the election the 15 year rule – preventing millions of British expats from voting – would be abolished. Mr Cameron wrote: “If our party wins in May, we will remove the cap that prevents Britons from voting in the UK elections after they have been out of the country for 15 years and allow them the vote for life. I hope you find this reassuring.” PROMISE Harry has been quick to congratulate the Prime minister on his victory – and to remind him of the promise. In his letter to 10, Downing Street, sent on Monday, he said: “We are hence expecting the matter of returning the vote to British expats to be a proposal in the ‘Queen’s Speech’. We ask that it be one of the first acts of your Government. “We – one million British expats – not only wish to vote in
any future referendum but will organise our one million votes, for we more than most have a real interest in the outcome.” Campaign group Votes for Expat Brits (website www.votes-for-expat-brits.com) is hoping that all British citizens living abroad will lobby their own Member of Parliament – or if disqualified by the rule the MP in their last constituency – to pressure for government to take action over its promise. Network of Cities Against Underage Drinking
SAN PEDRO del Pinatar has joined the initiative Network of Cities Against Underage Drinking, that is promoted by the Spanish Federation of Distillers. The programme outlines more than 100 reasons why a child should not drink alcohol. The mayor of San Javier, Visitation Martinez, along with the councillor of Social Services, Francisca Pelegrin, signed the act of adherence to the project Network of Cities Against Underage Drinking. The City Council joins another twenty national councils to fight against the consumption of alcoholic beverages by minors. The signing of the Act to participate in the project, between FEBE and the municipality of San Pedro del Pinatar, involves a joint effort in preventing underage alcohol consumption. Under project guidelines, a campaign will be conducted with some of the region’s outstanding athletes from the municipality, plus promotions with the hospitality industry and parents’ guides, which addresses, in an objective manner, the reasons why children should not drink alcohol.

All the glitters are not gold Hello, I am writing a letter in the hope it will get published for your readers to see another part of Benidorm. Instead of reading how well Benidorm is doing, its about time to show a bad side of Benidorm. I have lived in Benidorm for 5 years and my son (who is 22 years old) has been here for 4 years, for the last 3 years he has worked in 3 bars; one cash in hand and the last 2 on contract - or so he thought? As when he tried to get the Para Ayuda unemployment money to help him during the winter, they where not worth the paper they’re written on! Not good and not fair, my son speaks Spanish and English so he is an asset to any bar. He is a waiter and been in charge of a bar last year on his own, now this year hes been looking for work and so far with emails hes applied for 80 bars. Having had word of mouth from friends and references, also doing unpaid free work for a well known Spanish theme park and not hearing a thing back from anyone. But whats going on in Benidorm now is bars only want women which is discrimination (fair enough if you see bars advertising “waitress wanted”) but I am referring to very well known English bars that just advertise “Staff Wanted”. When you go inside with your CV they say “Sorry we want a girl/woman” this has happened with at least 25 bars that are English and Spanish bars which should not be allowed. Theres not many 22 year olds that want to work now days but how many knock backs can you keep getting because your not a woman? I am holding back my surname just in case one of the bars read this and spoil my sons chances over the summer, Paul. All the glitters are not gold.
Barking dogs
IT IS a sure sign of spring. The birds are singing and it is a beautiful day. More people are about and with them they bring their dogs. Sadly, the same people also go out for various periods of time, both day and night, and, guess what, they leave their dogs in their property to bark for hours on end to the discomfort of their neighbours. It is so frustrating. The dog owners, of course, are completely oblivious to the pain they cause their neighbours. They have so much love for dogs and so much disdain for people. Why are people selfish and inconsiderate? Robert Murray, Gran Alacant
Being responsible I WRITE on behalf of all responsible dog owners. I have just read the letter regarding yapping dogs. Please do not tar all dog owners with the same brush. I am fed up with reading letters about how dog owners let their dogs foul and yap. I have two beautiful rescue dogs and, no matter where my dogs foul, I clean it up, whether on rough ground or in a field. I also carry water and tissues so I can clean any mess properly if they have an accident on the pavement. They are trained to go to the side if cars or bikes pass when I have them out along the river. If someone knocks at my door they bark as that is their job, but, when they see who it is, they stop. If it is someone they don’t know I tell them it’s a friend and they stop. Dogs train easily with love and patience. So please all you people who do not share your lives with these wonderful loyal and loving animals, remember all dog owners are not the same. Jennifer Barker
Beware scamming strangers bearing oranges..
Strangers have been approaching tourists on popular beaches (Javea Arenal being one noted example) , offering a few oranges in a wordless gesture. Generally they don’t actually engage the visitor in speech, perhaps they do not speak spanish or English, but.. with-
out being asked… they try and place the oranges in the unsuspecting tourists bag. At the same time they liberate items within the bag, be it a wallet, purse or other item within reach. Beware. Steve, Denia

The Urology Service of HCB specializes in Sexual Health and pathologies of the prostrate
The renovated Service of Urology and Male Sexual health of the HCB approaches the study, diagnosis and treatment of the illnesses relating to the urinary and reproductive organs. This unit has created a specialist consultation for Erectile Dysfunction and Sexual Health and, in addition to the pathologies of the prostrate, improves the care to patients with Renal Colic. Dr. García López, the recently incorporated Urologist to the Service of HCB, has explained that “in Spain, visits to the urologist are not very frequent in middle aged men. The majority of patients wait until they have a problem before visiting the consultation which makes the treatment more difficult and it could have been avoided with a preventative revision”. Because of this, the Urology team offers revisions of male health with a preventative checkup (120 euros) within which the following tests will be carried out: Flowmetry, SCAN, PSA, as well as a consultation with the specialist doctor – who can treat any type of issue related to male health. Revision of male health: preventative checkup with a closed price. The preventative checkup includes the complete ultrasound study of the kidneys, bladder and prostrate. In the kidneys we can detect at an early stage, small tumors ( malignant and benign); in the bladder we study the possibility of vesicular tumors, hyperactive bladder or urinary difficulties provoked by the prostrate; and in the study of the prostrate, with the ultrasound, we can see its growth and volume. The revision also includes a Flowmetry test to determine the volume and the speed of the eliminated urine, and the PSA (tumour values of the prostrate) analysis. Additionally, the consultation with the specialist allows the patients to talk with him and to locate other pathologies or sexual difficulties. Specialists in Erectile Dysfunction and Sexual Health. cialist revises the personal situation of the patient with a brief test which will help to establish if the erectile dysfunction comes from the loss of sexual appetite, if the origin of the problem can be found within the sexual stimulation or if it originates from a problem with the actual penis. In this last case, the following possible treatments will be offered within three therapeutic steps: 1. Oral medication. 2. Intracavernous injection. 3. Prothesis of the penis. Additionally, within the consultation they can treat premature ejaculation, which, when following the therapeutic approach, can count on the support of a Sexologist. Prostrate pathologies. The problems of the prostrate affect any age and the premature detection currently permits numerous treatments and solutions which can avoid larger problems over the long term. Care of the patient with Renal Colic. Dr. García López, has signalled that “renal colic is treated in HCB as an emergency and each case is studied using the necessary treatments for a thorough approach. The goal is that the patient who arrives during a serious colic can leave without pain and with a long lasting solution”.

Bullfighting may return to Benidorm by Jeanette Rice
AMIDST MUCH debate about the traditional sport of bullfighting in Spain plans are being made for it to return to Benidorm in the near future. Tauroemocion, a company based in Teruel have been given responsibility for managing the Benidorm arena and have stated that they plan to organise events for July and August. The company is known for it’s organisation of bull runs through local towns and villages. The coordinator for the Benidorm Bullring, Vicente Buigues, detailed how it was important for the company to create an event that is of great importance for the town. The company plans to launch an extensive poster campaign in a bid to encourage fans to return and will be pricing the events at competitive rates. The return of such an emotive event is, no doubt, going to cause much public response either in praise for what is considered to be a national sport, or by those who feel it is outdated and cruel. It will no doubt be something that RTN will be reporting on more in the future as events unfold.
Jelly fish arrive in Benidorm WITH THE warmer weather now here, unfortunately, comes the arrival of the stinging jelly fish to the Costa Blanca region. Over the weekend, holiday makers reported seeing a swarm of jelly fish in shallow waters off the Poniente Beach area of Benidorm. The jelly fish sting can be very painful and dangerous so authorities are advising visitors to the beach to be more vigilant and report immediately to one of the many first aiders along the beach areas should they be stung. Families are also being warned that it is not advisable to allow their children to catch the jelly fish in their buckets, which often happens as the young children are fascinated with their bright colours and unusual shape.

Internet speeds will range from 50 to 200mb which will be a vast improvement on the maximum speeds most people receive currently.

Fun and merriment at European Day
by Keith Nicol ON SATURDAY May 9th, Torrevieja was a very busy place for residents and visitors alike. With the election campaigns now underway for the Municipal and Regional Elections, Torrevieja’s Major Eduardo Dolon only raised the flag at 11am on Saturday to mark European Day but did not say anything on stage in case it could be misconstrued as electioneering. The event was overseen by the former and present Directors of the Foreign Residents Office, Graham Knight and Jean Paul Mulero. Hundreds of people gathered in the town’s main Plaza to commemorate Europe Day, a celebration that takes place every May 9th in the European Union, to mark the “Schuman” declaration , in which the French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman in 1950 provided the first steps towards the integration of European states by proposing that coal and steel from Germany and France should be overseen
by a joint administration, promoting the creation of the first European Community. After a brief welcome speeches in various languages, the event continued with the raising of the EU flag from the mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon, has sounded while the “Ode to Joy” by Ludwig van Beethoven, sung on this occasion by torrevejenses Francisco Moreno and Concepción Pérez. After the flag-raising a number of acts performed on stage, starting with the ever popular Duende Andaluz (France), representatives of the Edinstvo Association (Bulgaria), Phoenix Band (UK) and the OOPAH Band (International) plus the only solo of the day, an excellent performance by Chloe Leigh, who not sings the soundtrack to The Cucaracha Club, that shot entirely in the city of Torrevieja and region, but also is one of the stars of the film. Activities concluded just in time for the end of Mass that heralded the parade of horses and carriages to the May Fair.

Rock Against Cancer parties all day long by Keith Nicol
HUNDREDS OF music fans, from all ages and nationalities, turned out for a very special street party on Sunday, to support Rock Against Cancer, in Torrevieja. Organised by the AECC and Neil Wyatt, owner of Monroe’s Music Pub, the street party raised much needed awareness for the great work done by the AECC, Spain’s Contra Cancer Association. The bottom end of Calle Apollo started to fill up shortly after 3pm for the 4pm start with ‘Rock Against Cancer’ featuring some of the best bands on the “Costa Blanca”: Magnetik Surf, Deja Vu, Black Thunder, Los Duques, Rebel Fires, Kolted and Santiago Campillo, founder of the band M Clan among others. Raffle tickets were sold by the AECC for a number of great prizes including a Fender Guitar and for those that might have missed the draw, the winning list of numbers is available inside Munroe’s Music Pub and soon on their Facebook page. Neil wanted to thank everyone for their support in making the event such a special occasion; “Just a quick word of thanks to all the hard working team at Munroe’s Music Pub, the bands for their support and to all the collaborators. This charity event wouldn’t have been possible without your help.” The event was also one of the first events on the Spring calendar of the CIAJ and Councillor for Youth Rosario Martinez remarked that it was wonderful to see just great support for the event, with everyone having fun and a great time. She also added that she hoped ‘Rock Against Cancer’ would become an annual event. Hundreds of people supported the AECC, Monroe’s Music Pub and Rock Against Cancer on Sunday

Unfortunately, the result was not as bright for The Legionnaires as the weather, with Indalo coming out as the decisive overall winners. The rink results were 3 draws, 4 wins to Indalo and 1 win to the Legionnaires. Despite the loss, a most enjoyable weekend was had by all. Particular thanks go to the members of San Luis Bowls Club who made up the numbers and Allan and Dianne Budd for making all the arrangements.

Who should pay for repairs during a lease contract? IN LEASE contracts, one of the most common sources of conflict and problems is determining who should repair what is broken during the rental term. THE LAW governing urban leases in Spain is the Urban Leases Act, Law 29/1994 of 24th of November. In relation to repairs and maintenance obligations of properties, the law says in it’s Article 21, titled: Conservation of the property, that: The Landlord (home owner) is obliged to make all necessary repairs to keep the house in habitable conditions, to be able to use it for the use agreed, except when the deterioration or repair is attributable to the tenant. If the work to be performed cannot wait until the termination of the contract, and has to be carried out during the lease, the lessee (tenant) is obliged to bear it, even if it is very annoying or even if they cannot use part of the house. Article 21 says that if the duration of the works to be done takes more than twenty days, the rent to be paid shall be decreased in proportion to the part of the property that the tenant
cannot use during the repairs. The article also states that “ minor repairs due to the ordinary deterioration caused by the normal use of the property shall be borne by the tenant”. This last part referring to “minor repairs” to be paid by the tenant, is the source of many problems between landlords and tenants, as it is difficult to determine clearly what is meant by small repairs due to the regular use. A recent article from the legal magazine ‘SEPIN’, illustrated some recent court decisions from Spanish courts, and what they understand can be considered as small repair due to ordinary use, to be paid by tenants: The Malaga Provincial Court in its judgment of 06th of October 2011, said that it is a small repair arranging for a coffee machine to be installed in the premises, and the tenant must therefore pay for it. The Provincial Court of Madrid, said that the humidity caused by poor sealing of the bathtub is

not the responsibility of the landlord and the tenant has to repair and pay for such work, considering it as minor repairs resulting from normal and ordinary use, according to its judgment of 29th of June 2009. The Provincial Court of Valencia, understands that it is the responsibility of the tenant repair the boiler, as it reparation is due to the ordinary use of it, and should be considered as small repairs, in its judgment of 15th February 2003 However, it can be very interesting, if you are signing a lease or rental contract, to negotiate and correctly word the property contract, to expressly agree what must be repaired by each of the parties, as these repairs can be significant, costly, and provoke conflict between the parties to the contract. THE MUCH talked about UK election is now well and truly behind us, how can the opinion polls have been so wrong you may be asking yourself, it had most investors worried about a hung parliament or even a Labour victory which we were led to believe would send the markets crashing down around us.
WELL NOW you can let out a sigh of relief, or can you, the result was taken well by the UK equity markets and in the short term should provide businesses with a stable political and legislative background in which to invest for the future. However it is debatable as to whether the UK election results will have any impact on interest rates, the Bank of England voted last week to keep the base rate at 0.50%. Official figures at the end of the last month showed the total size of the economy increased by just 0.3 per cent in the first quarter of 2015. That was half the 0.6 per cent growth rate seen in the previous quarter and the worst performance
since late 2012 – raising fears that the recovery is running out of steam. These disappointing figures fuelled speculation that interest rates will not rise until 2016 at the earliest having been frozen at 0.5 per cent since March 2009. The expectation that rates will stay lower for longer has been encouraged by the low-inflation environment. The UK March consumer prices index rate of inflation stayed at the 0 per cent recorded in February - despite forecasts falling petrol prices and the supermarket price war would turn the rate negative. The impact of very low interest rates continues to reverberate around the financial system. For example bond markets are showing signs of
increasing volatility and can no longer be relied to be either a safe haven or a predictor of economic activity. Companies are buying back shares using cheap loans rather than investing for the future, whilst certain badly run hedge funds are taking excessive risks with borrowed money and leaving their investors with the downside when things go wrong. With little hope for savers that their money will earn them a good rate of
interest sitting in a Bank, or invested in government bonds, be it in the UK or Europe, now is the time to speak to the investment specialists at Blacktower. Basic Guide to Spain’s Voting System AS THE voting and counting of ballots was coming to a close in the UK elections, on last Thursday evening at midnight the Spanish Regional and Municipal elections kicked off.
The basic D’Hondt list system for eight seats
by Keith Nicol Unlike the UK system of ‘one man one vote’ or even the PR system used in Northern Ireland, in Spain they use a ‘list system’, the same as they use in Wales and for the European Union. For most of us, it’s all very different but very easy to understand, once you know how. Each party produces a list, equivalent to the number of seats available on the council, plus a few spares. You don’t vote for individuals, you vote for the party. In the case of Torrevieja and Orihuela there are 25 seats in council and 13 of these are needed to form a majority municipal government. It’s simplicity itself. Go to the Polling Station, show the polling officer your ID, pick up the piece of paper with the party you wish to vote for, put this paper inside an envelope, do NOT write anything on the ballot form, or envelope, and drop the envelope into a transparent box. Done and dusted. No need to write anything, put names to faces, just remember which party you are voting for, or the
candidate for mayor, and that’s that. For those sorting out the ballots cast, they just place the cast votes into corresponding boxes for each party, count them all up, give the chief polling officer their totals; they add everything up and generally before midnight, the new major will be elected, or in the case of a lack of a majority, the bargaining begins. In Spain they use the d’Hondt method, a mathematic formula that works upon the principal of a highest averages method for allocating seats in party-list proportional representation. The method is named after Belgian mathematician Victor D’Hondt. For very small parties, who just want to make a point and show their faces, they must receive at least 5% of the total votes, in order to be included in the next stage of council seat allocation, otherwise, all their votes are set aside and not counted. In reality that means capturing at least 1,500 votes, so from Torrevieja’s 10 parties and Orihuela’s 13, probably only five or six parties at the most, will make the 5% needed and their votes counted. The total votes cast for each party in the electoral district is
divided, first by 1, then by 2, then 3, then 4, then 5, right up to the total number of seats to be allocated for the district/ constituency. If the district contains 8 seats the highest 8 numbers are chosen from all the numbers resulting from the divisions. In reality, there would not be eight seats, or any even number of seats available but always an odd number, so that a winner could be chosen and the seats won could not be tied! In the example, Party A receive a total of 100,000 votes. For this they receive one seat. The 100,000 is then divided by two so they have 50,000 votes to capture seat number two. The 100,000 is then divided by three, giving them a total of 33,333 to gain seat number four. The same process happens for each and every party until, in the case of Torrevieja or Orihuela, a total of 25 seats have been allocated. My thanks to Torrevieja’s former Councillor for Foreigners Pedro Valero (who is not standing this year but will continue studying for his Masters in Politics over the next few years) and Wikipedia for the brief explanation.

Summer sunflowers
by
Dick Handscombe Holistic gardener and author
SUNFLOWERS (HELIANTHUS) are majestic summer flowers and do especially well in Spain in reasonable soil if one remembers to water them. At first one thinks of the large single headed yellow flowers on stems up to two or three metres high that look like a summer sun .Growing a specimen as a child in a small patch , pot or school garden has been the stimulus to many for the start of a lifetime interest in gardening. Such tall plants are not always easy to fit into a balanced garden layout. However there are now an amazing number of varieties available from dwarf varieties to the Russian Giants from Siberia. They can give valuable displays of colour and interest throughout the summer and early autumn. And with luck beyond. We have even had self-seeded plants flower during February in the middle of our vegetable plot, having survived many nights below zero..
BENEFITS OF GROWING SUNFLOWERS Ten reasons for growing sunflowers come to mind. 1. They are relatively easy to grow. 2. Their wonderful display whether you grow a block of tall varieties in the vegetable garden, medium height varieties mixed in a perennial /shrub bed or dwarf varieties grown in flower pots. 3. Long lasting cut flowers for the naya or house. 4. Flower heads that attract beneficial insects. 5. Supports for climbing beans in the vegetable garden. Or why not at the back of a flower bed? 6. A natural windbreak for lower growing vegetables or annuals. 7. Seed heads that can be separated and sundried to provide seeds as an alterative to nuts or olives with an evening drink, adding to breakfast cereals or fruit ,or crushing to extract sunflower oil if you have sufficient. Make sure you eat them before the oil content turns rancid. 8. Seed heads left on the plant to dry can be cut of with a short stem and then tied to a suitable branch of a tree in the garden to attract and feed birds during the winter. Loose seeds can also be added to the bird table or the food for many cage and aviary birds. 9. As a sprouting seed – soak seeds overnight. Cut the base
out of a 5 litre water bottle, about 8cm deep. Fill with 50/50 soil and compost, dampen, lay seeds on top and cover with damp newspaper. Put in a sunny corner, but remember to keep the paper moist but not soaking. As soon as the seeds start to sprout remove the paper but continue to keep the soil moist. In a couple of days you will have green shoots two centimetres high which you can cut off and add to salads for their flavour and high mineral content. 10. A good first seed for a children’s corner. Some years ago we read that a famous 16th century herbalist, name escapes me now, found that sunflower buds boiled and eaten like globe artichokes with butter, vinegar and pepper exceeded the taste of artichokes - as well as stimulating a bodily lust. Something to try this summer, but with olive oil!
VARIETIES TO CHOOSE FROM As already mentioned sunflowers now come in a wide variety of heights, leaf forms, single or multi headed branches of flowers, and most importantly colours. Yellow, red, orange, bronze and cream varieties are now available in single or mixed hues. Unfortunately few seed shops and catalogues stock more than a few common varieties. For variety we have purchased seed for many years from the mail order catalogue of Chiltern Seeds, www.chilternseeds.co.uk. which has had upto thirty varieties The following selection will give a feel for the range of sunflowers available. 1. Drawf. 30 to 45 cms. Pavino. Can grow well even in a 10 cm. pot .Develops a number of branches with a continuing display of 10 cm. flowers. 2. A little taller.40 to 60 cms. Little Dorrit. Asingle stem with 20 cm. yellow flowers around a dark chocolate centre. Useful for the front of a bed. 3. Mid height.120 to140 cms. Autumn Beauty. Branching stems of 15 cm. flowers in a range of artists colours..bronze,
lemon, mahogany, old gold and cream. 4. Tall.200 to 300 cms. Earth Walker. An abundance of multi headed branches of terracota and reddish brown flowers. 5. Even taller! 300 cms plus. Uniflorus gigantus - why not call it Sky rocket? Traditional single headed large plate sized yellow flowers. It is obviously possible to achieve a breath taking display. PLANTING SEEDS Plant singly in plant pots for planting out when 15 cms. high or growing dwarf varieties to maturity. One can also plant seeds direct but inevitably one looses a few seeds to hungry mice and snails. .Plant in a rich water retaining seed compost or garden soil. CARE OF SUNFLOWER PLANTS Although established plants can survive in poor soil this only where there is deep soil that the tap root can explore searching for water. In most soils it is best to water and feed regularly to achieve maximum heights, number and size of flowers and seed heads. Apart from a little leaf rust sunflowers give little problem provided you establish strong young plants. Don’t over water seedlings as they can rot off. They do not like marshy conditions. Sunflowers do best in full sun but will tolerate semi shade.

A visit to Spain’s ‘Little Switzerland’
A FOUR-DAY trip to Ayna – known as the ‘Little Spanish Switzerland because of its stunning mountain setting – was enjoyed by 48 members of Javea U3A’s Spanish culture and Cuisine group. by Jack Troughton The fun started on the trip organised by group leaders Angela Chantry and Tony Dearie with a stop on the journey to visit Bodega Bocapa in Petrer and lunch at Les Pedreres. The adventurers stayed three nights at a hotel in the Sierra del Segura mountains with breathtaking views across the countryside. They went on a tour of Anya and in a number of excursions visited the source of the Rio Mundo in protected parkland and explored the architecture and churches of Letur and Lietor – including its mountainside
caves only made accessible to the public in the last two years thanks to the erection of a metal stairway. And on the return journey, the coach stopped at the 15th Century castle town of Chinchilla de Monte-Aragon, group members undertaking the climb to view ancient cave homes, now rented out to visitors. The next group outing is to the home of Valencia Football Club and the city’s bullring. For more details visit www.u3ajavea.org

Torrevieja short film for Alicante Film Festival
by Keith Nicol
A SHORT film, “Behavior,” directed by Torrevejense Esteban Die Ros and shot entirely on location in Torrevieja, has been selected to participate in the Alicante Film Festival. All works will be projected on 30th and 31st May in the Panoramis cinemas from 5pm. The main actors of the film are Aitana López, Karen Torosyan and Esteban Die. Synopsis: Chi, a young Asian daughter of a scientist who has created an experimental drug for military use, decides to sell to the Russian mafia for a huge sum. Plans go awry after she and her father are kidnapped, but a military group for the protection of scientists try to save them. The Alicante Film Festival was created to support and promote film culture and its variants such as short films and TV movies sections. Inaugurated in 2004 they began as a film festival for just short films and presentations. In 2005 they offered a competitive section for short films and including a new official section “TV MOVIES”. The official sponsors of the Festival are the city of Alicante, the Generalitat Valenciana, the City of Light (Ciudad de la Luz) and
the Provincial Council of Alicante. The rest of sponsorship includes the collaborating companies that, through their contribution, raise the profile of the region at national film festivals. The Festival is run by Vicente Seva and organised by the association “Futura Films”. The world of film in the Alicante Province is growing steadily. This year, two feature films will wrap production: Siesta Productions ‘The Cucaracha Club’ and Bill Little’s ‘Trained to Kill’. In June the very successful Torrevieja AudioVisual short film festival takes place and the new ‘Shoestring Torrevieja International Film Festival’ and
The team from ‘Behavior’ at the Alicante Film Festival
conference, for feature films and music videos is in planning stages for early 2016. Local film companies are working with government agencies to reorganise a new Film Commission for the Torrevieja region and surrounding area, putting together a database of actors, staff, crew,
locations, vehicles, support, suppliers and everything required for video, film and music production, in the area. The new film festival will also link in with the planned English Language Film Shows, planned to start in September, possibly with the premier of ‘The Cucaracha Club’ and ‘Trained to Kill’.
The ‘horse whisperer’
By Jack Troughton AUTHOR MIKE Rendell entertained U3A Vall del Pop with the adventures of cavalryman Philip Astley, the father of the circus. Astley joined the army as a horse trainer but left the army after the Seven Years War and started working as a rider instructor – teaching in the morning and putting on a bit of a show each afternoon. It was a fledgling circus empire. Soon Astley and his circus were performing throughout the country and opened 19 amphitheatres across Europe where daring feats on horseback were performed. Mike’s four-time great-grandfather Richard Hall and his wife actually paid two shillings to watch the daredevil Astley in April 1772 near Westminster Bridge. And his book about the founder of the circus is available from Amazon in both printed and Kindle form. Find out more about the Georgian age at the writer’s blog, http://blog.mikerendell.com

Summer is cooler in the North WE HAVE all heard of “El Cid”, but how many of us know he grew up and was educated in Burgos. It is strange to walk streets once trodden by a young man who was to become probably the world’s most famous soldier of fortune. Stranger, still, is the thought that he never saw the magnificent Gothic cathedral which dominates the city centre, but was not constructed until more than a century after his death. Burgos has seen notorious warriors like Napoleon, Wellington, and many Catholic monarchs, playing a major role in the history of Spain. Indeed, it was Franco’s headquarters in the early stages of the Spanish civil war. What a pleasant surprise therefore to find a beautifully built, well preserved old city, with sturdy, old stone walls, an ancient city gate, magnificent cathedral and beautiful tree-lined walkways, below a medieval castle astride the hilltop.
Now to the Rioja wine country, and Logroño, a small city famed for its tapas bars. After sightseeing and trying out the tapas, visit one of the largest and most famous vineyards and bodegas, not just in Rioja country, but in Spain. After an exciting bodega visit, sip a glass of Rioja wine surrounded by the vineyards and mountains of Rioja. Heaven!! On the homeward journey an overnight stop in Madrid puts the icing on the cake.
Not far away on the coast is the Basque city of Bilbao, a bustling modern city. Parks and walkways line the river banks. In the “Casco Viejo” hundreds of street cafés line the cobbled streets. A cable car climbs the hillside. Visit one of only 3 Guggenheim museums in the world. This incredible, gravity-defying, structure houses a unique collection of art and sculptures from the mid 20th century until the present.
City centre hotels are used in both Burgos and Madrid, giving you both cities on your doorstep. This marvellous 6 day outing is offered by “David’s Coachtrips SL” for only 299€ B&B including all day trips/bodega entry. Dates 19-24 July. Reservations online at www.coachtripsonline.com or call 0034) 966 785 910.

Life Coach
WITH A background in family and matrimonial mediation, Life Coach Sara Bell helps Readers with their daily worries. If you are having difficulties with relationships, family, work or any other aspect of your life, then help is at hand.
More to life My wife and I retired to Spain two years ago. We led very busy working lives, and were desperate to move abroad. But now all we seem to do is grocery shop, and watch the television, which, I tell her we could have done at home! I feel that there should be more to our life than this. It is not uncommon for retirees to feel bored once their working days are over, whether retired in Spain or not. The advantage of living in Spain compared to the UK is, of course, the fantastic climate, and it seems such a waste sitting indoors watching television, when you could be discovering all that Spain has to offer. For example there is horse riding, biking, taking walks in the mountains and through the valleys, general site seeing, wine tasting, and sampling Spain’s cuisine. Increasing your circle of friends would also help, and there are many friendship and hobby clubs on the Costa Blanca. Why not take up a new hobby? Something you’ve always wanted to do. Remember life is for living.
Am I right to worry? My husband and I have a circle of friends that we socialise with. One of our friends recently introduced her newly arrived, and newly divorced sister. Very quickly, it became apparent to me, and the other women in our group, that this woman is making a play for my husband. She is very attractive. My husband says there is nothing in it, but I have noticed that he is paying more attention to his appearance. Am I right to worry? You need to talk seriously with your husband first of all, and let him know how you feel. Tell him that it is not only you who has suspicions about this woman’s intentions. Also you could talk to the woman’s sister, and perhaps take your other friends with you for moral support. If nothing changes, and you feel brave enough, you could always talk to the woman directly. You could, of course, stop socialising with this particular crowd, but that would be a pity, as it is she who is the newcomer. You trust your husband, but it is a potentially dangerous situation to put temptation in anyone’s way. Write to Sara in confidence. A pseudonym will be used if you wish. Sara reads all letters and can give a personal reply. Email your question to agonyaunt@roundtownnews.com or Sara is available for private consultations, telephone 633 614 476.

tv & showbiz goss YouTube Has ‘No Brainer’ Joey Link of the discovered the Holy Grail? Week Punch in ´Austria Vienna mascot was unbelievably drunk on the pitch´ and watch a man just minutes away from the sack!
THERE ARE masses of ´Reality Stars´ on our TV screens, peeps like Joey Essex with his flashing whitetoothed smile and rippling six-pack. Pretty boy Joey got himself a show with ITV2 a couple of days before the general election to talk to politicians, a totally ridiculous idea for a show I thought, and I was ready to laugh my bonce off!! Someone at ITV2 took the incident last month when Joey called Nick Clegg´s political party the ‘Liberal DemoCATS’ and turned that faux pas into Educating Joey Essex. “I don’t really care if people think I’m pretending to be stupid,” said Joey “I’m not academic and clever, put me in a maths test I’d probably get a U, I got loads of things wrong when I was talking to the MPs and I still don’t really know anything, but why are their names so long? Why don’t they just call them cats?” then cracking on Joey added “ If I had a party I’d call them the ‘Reem Party’ and we’d make everything in the world Reem so everyone would vote for us,” logic only Joey knows about methinks. I said above how I was ready to laugh my bonce off, but then our Essex boy spoke more from the heart saying “I didn’t even know who the Prime Minister was seven months ago, and now I know every single MP and their parties,” before adding “I missed out on voting in the past and I’m here to tell young people that it’s a good thing to vote.” There´s something engaging about this simplistic and extremely honest view Joey now has on life, and it might well be the making of the boy! Let’s hear it for the Reem Party!!

All sorts of events took place around the birth of Princess Charlotte last week, commemorative plates, and what’s being called tasteful Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana scroll tattoos well popular. Another is to do with a cup of tea, and you can’t get more British than that. Yorkshire Tea have made just 10 boxes of Princess Charlotte Teabags, a smart promotion move there, but whatever you do don’t make a cup of tea with them!
24 year old Steve Carruthers from Hull pulled off some blag when he pretended to be Leonardo DiCaprio’s pal at the Mayweather/ Pacquiao boxing match, and ended up in the VIP area with Beyonce, Michael J Fox, and Christian Bale. Two unnamed Essex lads did something similar, dressing up in Mayweather tracksuits and pretending to be part of the boxer’s entourage, and they all have selfies to prove it! If you saw The Wedding Singer you might remember the rapping granny and her awesome rendition of Rappers Delight. Her name was Ellen Albertini a lady who passed away last week aged 101. She studied music and acting in New York in her youth, but never got any real parts until she was in her 70´s. The Wedding Singer got her noticed, a fact that confirms to just keep on going and you´ll get there.
The nine series of raucous comedy show Red Dwarf broadcast from ´88 - ´99 ended up having a cult following after being shown on Dave TV, and the rumour of the original cast returning for ´a proper full series´ has now been confirmed. It’s claimed that characters Lister, Rimmer, Kryten, Cat and Holly were, in their time, the best thing on TV and were nicknamed The Young Ones in space. Check out a show on YouTube.

Gema Amor Pérez Candidate running for Mayor of Benidorm by the Liberales party. We are a team of honest well prepared professionals ready to listen to you the community! The “LIBERALES” political party in Benidorm insists that you the British, as part of the community have a valid and important vote and your ideas and requests for a brighter future will be listened to and a firm promise given to ensure this happens. Why vote for Gema Amor as our future Mayor in Benidorm? Because I have an amazing team backing me with a wealth of knowledge and experience who know Benidorm so very well and will work “hands on“ a long side me building a great future for everyone. With so many new incentives, ideas, projects proposed by the LIBERALES, together as neighbours, we will form and govern a new and better Benidorm. What are the differences between the LIBERALES projects and “other” candidate parties for the elections? - A great difference, we believe we know what Benidorm needs, can deliver everything we say and, most important 100% without being dictated to from Madrid Valencia or Barcelona. Do you regret anything in your political career? I do not regret anything from the past, I am proud of who I am and what I have accomplished and, like everyone in life have perhaps made some mistakes along the way. Fortunately, we all learn from our mistakes and they make us a better person as well as professional which in my case is a passionate career in politics and an immense love for Benidorm. How would you like the people of Benidorm to remember you? I would like them to remember me as an honest, lowly and loyal person… The Mayor that fought and defended her city and achieved important things like growing accordingly to what we are, the capital of tourism. Give three things you would give priority to changing Our streets, we will commence work to improve greatly the condition in general. Employment promotion and a general life and well being socially amongst the citizens and community of Benidorm. Continue with the fight to have Benidorm legally recognised as an official tourist resort within the National Government which, will bring so many more advantages and benefits both physically and financially. Do you think Benidorm is the ideal place for everyone? Yes certainly, Benidorm like the Liberales is for everyone! We are a “cosmopolitan “ town, warm friendly with something for everyone, developed over the years to what it is today with the help and dedication of hard work and sacrifice by people not only born here (like my own family for example) but from people from all over. The foreign residents who have elected to live here, maybe set up business too have played a great and important role in our development and productivity therefore we want to listen even harder to your ideas , suggestions because your vote counts too! What is wrong with Benidorm? The town does not have “anything wrong” however, perhaps in the past a lack of progress, development and direction mainly due to difficult governing bodies with regards to prioritising its needs and clear objectives. What is your opinion of the other parties running for office in Benidorm? Basically there are many opportunists who have presented themselves as candidates who have never ever accomplished anything in their lives positive towards the town. Unfortunately they are not prepared to govern or make decisions which affect the huge community we have here or the immense influx of visitors. There are also other who have occupied posts within local government who, up to the present date have done nothing for the good of Benidorm just simply accept decisions dictated to them. They accept the Ave is not of high priority, VAT payments within the tourist industry should not be reduced which basically is a total lack of leadership and is simply disabling Benidorm from a continuous progression.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin
Adverbs of manner ADAPT Open Day THIS WEEK we are going to look at how to say “–ly” in Spanish, as in happy – happily, quiet – quietly, fortunate – fortunately and so on. WHEN WE add “-ly” to words we are, in grammatical terms, changing adjectives to adverbs. There are all kinds of adverbs in English and Spanish with lots of different uses, but we are going to stick to one kind, which are often called “adverbs of manner”. In other words they describe “how” things are done. To put it another way, they describe verbs or actions, unlike adjectives which describe things, or nouns. As ever we’d better make this clear with a nice simple example. Let’s say: “the happy girl”. “Girl” is a noun, referring to a person, and “happy” is an adjective describing the girl. Now we’ll say “the girl sang happily”. We have added an “-ly” ending to the adjective “happy” to form “happily” and in so doing we are now describing the manner in which something was done, or you could say we are describing the verb “sang”. How did she sing? She sang happily – using an adverb of manner. In the vast majority of cases in Spanish this “-ly” ending is expressed with “-mente”. Let’s take our example: happy is “feliz” and happily is “felizmente”: so our two sentences in Spanish are “la niña feliz”. “La niña cantó felizmente”. There are one or two simple rules about how this ending fits on to different types of adjectives. If the adjective ends in “o” in the masculine and therefore changes to “a” in the feminine, which is true of a very large number of adjectives, the “mente” ending tacks on to the feminine form of the adjective, in other words the ending becomes “-amente”. For example “tranquilo” meaning “calm”. “Mi padre es muy tranquilo” (My father is very calm) “Trabaja tranquilamente” (He works calmly). Likewise “abierto” meaning “open”. “Es un señor
muy abierto” (He is a very outgoing man). “Siempre habla de sus problemas abiertamente” (He always talks about his problems openly). Not all adjectives become adverbs automatically (notice in English there we also have the ending “– ally” automatic – automatically). In fact there are many adjectives which describe appearance, or have some other meaning, but cannot be changed to describe manner: for example “guapo” (handsome). In English we do have the word “handsomely” but it has a different meaning. We don’t usually say a person does anything “handsomely” although we can talk about being “paid handsomely”. In Spanish this certainly is NOT “guapamente” which I’m quite sure does not exist! We could translate this with “generosamente” (generously) though, which is what the word really means in this context. So, what happens with adjectives that do not end in “o” and “a” – well they just add the “-mente” ending as we saw before with “felizmente”. This also applies if they end in a different vowel, for example “enorme” (enormous) becomes “enormemente” (enormously) keeping the “e”. It is a subtle, but common, mistake amongst foreign speakers of Spanish to say incorrectly “enormAmente” instead of the correct “enormEmente”. Of course this only matters if the foreign speaker concerned pronounces his or her vowels clearly in the first place! Bueno, pues nada. Agradezco vuestra atención enormemente. I appreciate your attention enormously. Don’t we say strange things to each other sometimes? See you next week.

THE NEXT meeting of ADAPT Association, will be an Open Day for the general public. For the June meeting, everyone is invited to see what the group are all about and maybe also like the idea of being part of an association which aims to ‘integrate with our Spanish friends while enjoying a great social life’. Within the association they have a Language Conversation group, Metal Detecting, Luncheon groups, Out and About and many, many more, as well as projects such as Pantomime, Carnival and Christmas Choir. At the Open Day, a few tables set aside for some of our members to sell their wares, arts from the painting class, crafts etc. and also a few invited charity associations with their details and information. Their meeting place is a light, airy hall within the Pensionista building, next to Castelar College, Lo Pagan where you can browse in a relaxed social atmosphere and maybe enjoy a coffee of a cool libation in the cafeteria. The Open Day, or Open Morning, as the case will be, takes place on Saturday June 6th from 10am until about 12 noon. For more information and directions please visit their website: www.adaptsanpedro.com.

Wifi coverage
Dear Aunty: I am in need of you expert help again. I have Movistar WiFi internet router, but cannot get WiFi coverage all over my house, so I had to install an Ethernet cable to the room not covered. What I need to know is, can I put an additional WiFi router on the end of the Ethernet cable to act as a splitter and to give Wifi in that room (without having to install telephone connection) ? If I can, is it just a matter of plugging in the Ethernet cable and the mains supply to the new router, or is it more complicated ? Or is there another device that will act as a splitter and give me WiFi (apart from the system that uses the house electrical system as I have tried this before installing Ethernet cable and it did not work). Many thanks. Eric Aunty says: You can also get a “Wifi Range extender”, which you plug into an electrical plug. This does not use the power cables, but simply “boosts” your wifi signal. Something like : http://www.tp-link.us/products/details/?model=TLWA850RE Or yes, you can add another router at the end of the ethernet cable. But you may have to go into the configuration, to make sure it is not set to clash with your existing router (ie does not have the same iP address and gateway settings). The “powerline” plugs usually only work if they are used on the same “electrical circuit”. Hi Aunty Virus, I have a problem with my computer Windows 8. It seems to keep cutting out and going back to homepage. Is there anything I can do to stop it. Hope to hear from you. May Aunty says: It is difficult to give help or advice
Server redirects Hi, I have a Samsung Galaxy tab 2 10.1 tablet but when I try to get on some websites it says too many server redirects I never had a problem when I had my laptop pc . Any simple idea how I can cure this ? Thanks, Margaret Aunty says: Now this may or may not be an issue with your Samsung tab. The main problem with “server redirects” are an issue with the website. And that issue may affect “mobile devices”, which is why it works fine on your lap top. Since you have no control over the website, then is maybe down to your tab. And its built in internet browser. So you could always try and download an alternate internet browser for your tablet (firefox for example) and see if that resolves the problem.
based on such little information. When you say “cutting out” do you mean it closes down and reboots? In which case this could be one of many problems: a driver problem, a hardware problem (memory failing?), hard disk problem, a windows program problem, a windows update problem,
or some virus. Or do you mean the program you are using closes down and you return to the homepage? Which programs are you using when this happens? It maybe that program has not installed correctly, so shuts down when it sees a problem. So uninstall and reinstall that program.

Aqua Natura, Benidorm opens for the season TODAY, FRIDAY 15th, sees the opening of the of the Aqua Natural water park in Benidorm. With the temperatures rising rapidly throughout the Costa Blanca anything involving water is a welcome break and this year the water park is opening a new family slide on Saturday 16th. “AQUA SNAKE” is a family slide where visitors slide down its 150 metres on a float for three people. The park still has all its usual attractions including the zig-zag, black hole, kamikaze, multipista and niagra rides with salsa classes, the sea lion show and play area for the younger children. The promenade style walk to the water park creates the beginning of the beach experience without the sand. Visitors can lie down and sunbathe on the loungers and there is an exclusive pool area for younger children ensuring a family day of fun and excitement. The park has a qualified team of lifeguards who are there to assist whenever required. The water park covers 40,000 square metres and has five large sections. The wave pool, slides, children’s pool, lighthouse breakwater and solarium spa. One of the different experiences visitors can take part in is swimming with the sea lions. Demonstrations, held every day are packed with interesting information of the animals and their habitat, and there is an opportunity, both before and after the show, to swim with the sea lions and interact with them. One of the benefits of Aqua Natura is that visitors are permitted to take their own food and drinks into the park with plenty of picnic areas available. The park opens at 10.30am with buses running throughout the day from Benidorm. For further information you can contact the park directly or any of the tourist offices in Benidorm and surrounding areas can help.

Horoscopes Venus transits into Ceres and here time is of the essence as you begin to re write the essentials that will bring on the changes you currently face. All this is happening for very good reason, and you must accept responsibility for your actions and work tirelessly for what you believe in; putting love right up there on the menu too. Nothing is more tender than a Taurean in love; as they are able to pass this love onwards in each and every aspect of their lives. Doubts have now been swept away, and the focus can be now on a future that is based on fulfilment and happiness, both well deserved. When things were at a low you never gave up, now accept full reward. The Sun enters with a flourish that stimulates your innermost energies and inspires you to commit to further discovery of yourself, and just what makes you tick. This focus is not selfish since many, besides yourself, will benefit from the decisions you will make. Power is a wonderful tool when used wisely for the common good. Gemini brings you to make hay while the sun shines as this is a highly productive and busy week. There comes a reveal on a personal level midweek as Venus and Neptune rub cheeks and dance side by side. A clear way ahead will see you through, but do not underestimate something which could prove to be a fly in the ointment! Mysteriously the current phase of the Moon sees a strong influence on you right now. You have a feeling that things are not right, but it is very hard to put your finger on what it is and what can be done. This week both Jupiter and Pluto serve to make things easier, and when you relax then you will see the whole picture and where you stand. The absence of Mercury brings you a silence that you wisely keep within, all to yourself. It is important to be sure and it is not the time to spill the beans and make any waves in the process. If this means biting your tongue then know that it wont be for very long, and that someone close is working at making things happen in inspiring ways. The scales are resonating as anger has made you defensive, and though this is for good reason it destroys your delicate and finely tuned balance. With Venus tuned into Ceres at the start of the week, the influence of Neptune throws caution to the wind, and begs for a conciliation so that peace can be better established for all. Look to your opposing sign of Taurus and you will find that Venus trines Neptune whilst negative actions are brought about by Saturn’s influence on Jupiter. Something or rather someone is taking the mickey, and this needs to be sorted once and for all. A time for silence has long gone and so have your say, it will make your day! As Jupiter dallies with Pluto there comes a time to review contracts and written documents and to check your bank statements. Look at policies and renew with caution after doing some research. you need to feel protected and yet something wrong, even something very small can grow and make you vulnerable, to say the least. Remove pressure and take a breather since you are putting a lot of time and effort into something that currently isn’t rewarding you the way that it should. It is a curious Ceres that interacts with the passion of feisty Venus this week, bringing things to a head and savagely pruning back that which you really have to, right now. You are in a difficult position, made more complex because effectually you are being asked to take sides in a dissolving relationship, and it is very hard to see where your loyalties really do lie. In hindsight you would never have wanted to be involved but the result now is the finality of a separation is imminent and you can walk away. Neptune entertains Venus in style, since all that you do is fuelled by your love and respect for others. Loving yourself is sometimes hard for you to do, but you are making the right decisions based on getting on with what’s relevant right now, and balancing this with what needs to happen to make it all fit together as it should do!

The daily bark THERE IS a cockerel, a rooster actually, who starts his morning call earlier than all the others here in the village of Finestrat. I am often working into the wee small hours, since I am productive at night, and find myself going off to sleep, finally, at the start of his crow for the break of day...even if it is still dark and every other living being is fast asleep. I notice too the nightly barking of dogs all around the campo and the village, just as if a message was being sent from dog to dog like some chain letter floating around the Internet. All the dogs in my street seem to hear the call and receive the message and the bark accordingly. Thankfully my little pooch, Lola, has other things to do like burying her dog biscuits in every plant pot around, snoozing and a light entertainment of hurling her toys in every direction. Each to their own I say, but the daily bark sounds around the village, and the more frantic the barking the more poignant, surely, is the message. My messages from Spirit can be silent too. I have learnt the hard way how to misinterpret and to assume, which you never can do. Just like the daily bark my messages have sometimes an urgency and I just know that I have to do something, or that something that I have done needs to be changed. This is effectively like an early warning system and it seems to be open to interpretation since it is fuelled by Spirit. I
know that I have a message to help other people to connect with the reality of the available Spirit World. Hence I write as one of my forms of communication, do the odd radio show and have made appearances on UK , Norwegian and American television. Quite how the message is received and acted upon is beyond my control; and it may be good to have the neighbour’s Labrador to confirm that all is going well out there. Being on stage is the favourite of my means of communication. It is wonderful to be able to work with an audience, and to bring spiritual messages to them, whether these come from the smallest of Spiritual Churches in rural New Jersey, or the glare of the Bergen Arena on a Friday night, if I can get the message out it will make others feel good and this will bring about change for them as pointless mourning ends and celebration of life truly begins. All are part of communication, and we are able to be more communicative these days. Not so long ago if you lived alone and had a cat and a vegetable patch you were a witch for sure, the odd wart or a big nose sent a message of fear to others who communicated wrongly. Interpreting is very open and is a clear part of the wonderful service that exists between the living and the dead. Signs, portents, anything becomes a communication when it can be cleverly and correctly traced with essential evidence from Spirit. I do get things wrong
Kenny‛s Postbag
sometimes, but the message is there and open to interpretation and that is better then silence. Can a message be sent in silence? Well yes, smells can linger after a bereavement and their presence can be explained as the very first foray into a communication that will hopefully lead to some spiritual connection being successfully made. A lot can come from silence especially if you see it as a form of Spirit making contact. No, before you ask me, I have never said, “Is there anybody there?” However if it is to induce dialogue I would say whatever is relevant and not hold back. Being present in the exchange of energies through communication from Earth to Spirit I have heard so much and learned from the great experience as every connection becomes an experiment of such. It is generally what needs to be said now that is the premise of actual contact. Some people here on Earth took offence at what was said to them by those who now inhabit the Other Side, and so too many took the sane offence by what wasn’t said. Thankfully the kind of dialogue that I supply is what is needed to make things better. Here silence never works and words can means such a difference, some said and some unsaid. Just like the daily bark information travels, so be distinct in what you ask for, send your message and break the silence that can hang around for years doing nobody any good in the process.

KENNY, I met you at Alicante Airport last month. You told me that Jupiter was aligning with my star sign and that I would be rewarded shortly for my perseverance. I thought it was all too good to be true but last week we won a few thousand pounds on the Lottery and it has made such a difference to pay off bills and the mortgage. Thank you Kenny, I should have believed in you more. Anita S. Anita I am delighted. I remember you, and Jupiter was affecting the fortunes of Taurus at the time with an interaction from Venus. I am a Taurus too...all I got was my SUMA bill in the post.......!

Aeroplane ear SOME PEOPLE love the thrill of air travel. Take offs and landings can be quite exhilarating! There are many more, however, that are terrified! ONE THING that we all feel during ascent and descent is the effect that changes in pressure has on our ears. For some this is just minor muffling and popping but for others it can cause severe pain and long term problems. These problems occur because the pressure in the aircraft cabin and the pressure within the ear becomes unbalanced. A small tube, called the Eustachian tube, runs between the middle ear and the throat and keeps pressure regulated. As the altitude changes quickly during a flight, the Eustachian tube does not have time to react and equalise the pressure. Symptoms of aeroplane ear, also known as barotrauma, barotitis media or aerotitis media, include: Moderate discomfort or pain in the ear A feeling of fullness in the ear Muffled hearing or mild to moderate hearing loss In severe cases, people may suffer: Severe pain Pressure in the ear Hearing loss Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
Spinning sensation (vertigo) Vomiting Bleeding from the ear Problems can occur in one or both ears. If possible it is best not to fly if you have a cold, sinus infection, nasal congestion or ear infection. There are several self help measures that can be taken to alleviate aeroplane ear. These include: Sucking sweets, chewing gum, swallowing and yawning. All of these help to open the Eustachian Tube and balance pressure. Use the Valsalva Manoeuvre: This is just jargon for pinching your nose, closing your mouth and blowing into your nose! Repeat several times. Don’t sleep or you will not be able to carry out the suggestions above! Use a nasal decongestant spray 30 minutes before take-off and landing. If you take antihistamines for allergies, take these 30 minutes before your flight. Take oral decongestant tablets 30 minutes before a flight but ONLY after checking with your doctor. Use special filtered earplugs that help to
equalise pressure To help babies and children: Give a bottle, drinks or a dummy. Keep the child upright. For older children, drinking through a straw or blowing bubbles through a straw can help. Your doctor may prescribe ear drops that contain an anaesthetic and a painkiller Do NOT give young children decongestants For people who fly frequently and suffer severe airplane ear, a procedure to place ventilation tubes in the eardrum may be necessary. If symptoms persist for more than a few hours after a flight or are severe, you should seek medical attention. Complications of airplane ear are rare but can include chronic tinnitus and even permanent hearing loss.

Benidorm or Bust Nappy rush convoy arrives A CONVOY of fun bangers arrived in Benidorm on Saturday afternoon having travelled 1500 miles from England. AS FEATURED in last weeks edition of RTN, the whacky races style convoy of bangers was due to arrive sometime on the Saturday and at around 4pm the parade of fancy dress cars drove through the town to their parking area behind Jokers. Round Town News went to meet some of the drivers who were, understandably, slightly tired and relieved to have completed the long drive but also elated that they had raised approximately £250,000 for their various charities. “There were over 170 of us creating quite a stir as we drove down through France and Spain”, said one of the drivers. He went on to say, “the support we have received from everyone that has sponsored us has enabled this years Benidorm or Bust event to exceed the total that we had raised last year”. RTN wishes all the teams a safe journey back to England.

With the early successes clearly evident, the number of new entrants has doubled and in the current year there are more than ten thousand competitors taking part. Their numbers have now been enhanced by leagues from Scotland and Wales with each of these regions being represented at the Grand Final in June. The venue for the final is the spectacular La Sella Golf Resort where sixteen pairs of golfers will have a weekend of exciting golf and luxurious hotel accommodation. This is the line-up so far with additional places to be filled by pairs from Cataluna, Pais Vasco and Andalucia: COSTA BLANCA NORTH Montgo GS: Shaun O´Gorman + Ros Fletcher Orba Warblers: Bob Edwards + Chris Williamson Galaxia Golf Valencia: Miguel Fernandez Sanchez + Roberto Gil Otra Golf Relleu: Kriz Kibblewhite + Tommy Turnbull Campbell Lamont Golf: Kevin Baxter + Peter Dymyd
COSTA BLANCA SOUTH Club 25: Andy Latter + Andy Coe Mar Menor GS: Richard Macro + Sue Jefferson Forum GS: Pat Garrigan + Myra Dickson MADRID Galaxia Golf Madrid: Fabian Herraiz Ortega + Javier Sierra Sopranis Foro 2000: Julian De Lago + Jose Luis Saguar Fernandez Sultanes del Swing: Angel Diego Hernandez Mula + Francisisco Bullon De Diego WALES Creigiau Golf Club: Derek Fretag + Paul Maber SCOTLAND SSGS: David Downie + Ken Davidson After their incredible performance in the regional finals a number of pundits will be favouring Andy Latter (handicap 4) and Andy Coe (handicap 1) who had a gross better ball score of 65 but with four rounds to be contested over two days we have all witnessed favourites stumbling and losing touch so it is wide open. Also keen on defending the trophy that was won by their colleagues last year will be
Winners from the Costa Blanca South, Andy Latter and Andy Coe from Club 25, with Campbell. They scored an incredible 46 points with handicaps of one and four
Pat and Myra from the Forum Golf Society. It will be a weekend of excellent golf and the good news is that you can follow the games and your favourites around the course free of charge.
Head He2ad Tony M - Why do golfers shout ‘Fore’ as a warning? Campbell - That’s a good question. I guess it is just traditional and dates back to the early days of golf in Scotland. Tony M - I think you are right. Although I had a problem a few weeks ago when I had laryngitis. Campbell - I can see that would be a problem. Did you get something for it? Tony M - I went to the Pharmacy and said “Do you have anything for laryngitis?”. And he said “Good morning, can I help you?”

Tim Saunders Independent unbiased car reviewer
Volvo V60
IT IS possible to make a sporty and stylish estate car. FOR DECADES we have made compromises with such vehicles forsaking looks in favour of space, but now Volvo, the Swedish manufacturer famed for its boxy creations of the ‘80s, has designed an eye catching and remarkable estate car. From the moment you clap eyes on the V60 you know it is not going to disappoint. Just on the outside numerous design features are pleasing to the eye, from the distinctive black grille to the alloy wheels, and the way the twin chrome exhausts are flush with the rear bumper. Those exhausts, and the fairly low stance of this machine, hint at its sporting credentials, which are really rather appealing. Although it is only a 2-litre diesel it can go from 0-60 in just 7.2 seconds with a top speed of 140mph. Not so many years ago this performance would only have been the domain of petrol engined models. It is remarkable how this technology has improved so rapidly. Also, those engineers at Volvo have developed a wonderful raspy note to the exhaust when it is worked hard making it an absolute joy to put your foot to the floor. The model I test is the V60 D4 Business Edition GT, which comes laden with goodies including a heated steering wheel, very handy on some cold spring mornings! Also equipped with engine stop start it is a fairly efficient vehicle, returning up to 67mpg and around 700 miles on a tank when travelling at typical speeds. This model is automatic which is generally very smooth. The best way to test the V60 is to put it through its paces on a trip to Norfolk, about four hours from our base in
Hampshire. The driver only needs to touch the accelerator to find the engine pleasingly responsive. There is a useful intelligent cruise control, not only easy enough to use but also measures the distance of the Volvo from the car in front. It brakes and accelerates accordingly making the brake and accelerator almost redundant. The speed limiter allows the driver to set the speed that the vehicle will not go over but the driver still needs to use the brake and accelerator pedals. On long journeys I find out how comfortable the seats really are and although I suffer a little neck ache overall I am pleased with the comfort levels. The heated front seats score highly with my wife, Caroline. It is a damp cold day and with the fan on low the windows soon mist up with all our hot air. However, it is soon cleared by turning the fan up and pressing the buttons for the heated front and rear windscreens. Its boot is large enough to accommodate youngest daughter Heidi’s pushchair and two sizeable luggage holdalls as well as various carrier bags of shopping. During the journey I need to use the satellite navigation. Having been a sat-nav hater for many years I am slowly being converted, especially by Volvo’s user-friendly system. Basically a few turns of the dial and the journey is calculated with the driver
being directed with helpful voice commands. You can also talk to this system and ask it to direct you to, for instance, London. I try this but it doesn’t seem to recognise my voice. This system has other issues such as when travelling along a road with a 60mph speed limit a 30mph speed limit sign will flash up on it. This happens on a couple of occasions, including once on the M11. While it can be useful for the beeps that alert the driver to imminent speed cameras it can be off putting when they go off without any reason and make the driver question whether something is wrong. Overall the V60 is a fantastic vehicle with a comfortable driving position. Not only is it great for the family it provides smart executive transport, too. FACTS AT A GLANCE Volvo V60 2010 onwards New price: £24,845 Top speed: 140mph 0-60mph: 7.2secs Power: 181bhp Economy: 67mpg Watch the video at: www.testdrives.biz
