Missing holiday maker found safe CHRIS HOLLAND was reported missing last Friday evening but found on Saturday morning having been mugged.

Social media struck again, for the better, when holiday maker Chris Holland went missing on Friday evening in Benidorm after being separated from his group of friends at around 10pm in the English square. Locals to Benidorm as well as friends and family back in the UK took to social media and spread the word that Chris was missing, and those coordinating the search back in the UK announced that he had been found unhurt on Saturday in the early hours. When Chris went missing he did not have his mobile phone with him and it is believed that he could not remember the name of the hotel that he was staying at. Chris admits, that when he was found wandering around in a confused state in the early hours of Saturday by a group of holiday makers, he had enjoyed a few drinks but it is believed that maybe one of these was spiked. Although Chris was unhurt from the mugging he was badly shaken and can only vaguely recall the mugging and couldn’t remember how he had ended up wandering the streets. Residents in the area, who had shared the missing report stressed that muggings are rare in the town and that they hope this would not deter Chris from returning to Benidorm. Violet crime in Spain, including places such as Benidorm, are still statistically low but obviously people need to be careful when alcohol is involved. Chris flew back to the UK on Monday.

La Olla residents protest at El Portet ON SUNDAY over two hundred residents gathered to protest against the works that have begun in El Portet. As reported in RTN a few weeks ago, the port entrance was to be modified to make the mouth area more open. This the resident’s claimed would affect the volcanic outcrop which is considered unique for the area. Orgainised by the two neighbourhood associations L’Olla and Cap Negret Montemolar, the residents gathered at midday by the wall of the “Portet de L’Olla” to make their protest vocally. With the support of Altea’s political parties the residents have called for an annulment of the decision made by Generalitat Valencia, having been bounced between various courts since 2011 the works have been started and stopped and now re-started.

The DNI mobile office comes to La Nucia THE TRAVELLING office run by the National Police will be in La Nucia on 26th and 30th June. The mobile DNI (documento de identificacion nacional) has visited the town previously, and is designed to help residents by saving them a visit to the Benidorm police station. On Friday, 26th June, those with appointments attend the mobile office and present their documentation. Then on Tuesday 30th June they return to collect their new documents. Appointments are given to avoid queues, and the location of the office will be in carrer Sant Antoni 70, where the roads avenida Porvilla and Planet cross. The office will be able to perform passport renewal, new DNI documents, renewal of DNI documents and aims to offer 100 appointments. The costs of this will be 10.50€. Appointments must be made by calling the town hall on 965 870 700.

Marbs fugitive behind bars ESCAPED PRISONER Haroon Ahmed said to fled to Marbella on the Costa Del Sol was back in custody on Tuesday after being arrested in the less glamorous setting of Nottinghamshire.

by Jack Troughton THE 26-year-old spent six days on the run after he walked out of HMP Dovegate in Staffordshire and in the ensuing publicity was reported to have taken up residence on the so-called Costa del Crime. The Sunday Mirror claimed to have traced the fugitive, originally from Derby, to Marbella but Staffordshire Police could not confirm or deny whether he had actually left the country. Ahmed was serving a sentence for robbery and after his escape; police warned he should not be approached by members of the public. His brother Majeed Ahmed, 25, has been charged with assisting a prisoner in escaping from prison. Meanwhile, Serco, which runs HMP Dovegate has launched a probe into what happened. Director Michael Guy said: “I have commissioned an urgent investigation into the circumstances of the escape – we are working closely with the police to identify what went wrong and to address any failings.”

Learner driver flattened by tank

NOWHERE DURING the driving test is there a section which requires you to ‘avoid a tank’ but this learner driver could have done with that expertise after the front of her car was flattened by the monstrous machine. The tank made short work of the 18-year-old’s Toyota hatchback after she accidentally pulled out in front of the column of British military vehicles in the German town of Augustdorf. The Challenger 2 tank’s driver wasn’t able to stop the 62-tonne beast in time, but everyone in the car managed to escape unharmed. The car received about 12,000€ worth of damage, while the tank was completely unscathed. Obviously!

SIR JAMES Dutton, the Governor of Gibraltar, has resigned less than two years into the job and said to be “frustrated” with the Foreign Office’s failure to stand up to Spanish aggression over the Rock. by Jack Troughton THE HIGHLY decorated soldier, who ended a 37-year career in the royal Marines as a Lieutenant General, is said to have become tired of his ceremonial role. In a statement, Sir James said his decision was made for “purely personal and professional reasons” although he admitted the position as Governor was “more representational and ceremonial than I had expected.” However, it was said the 61-year-old former NATO commander who has seen service in Afghanistan, felt he had been “sold a duff” by the Foreign Office. Instead of playing an active role defending Gibraltarian interests in the face of recent Spanish ‘sabre-rattling’ over the Rock, he discovered he was essentially a link between the UK and Gibraltar governments. An a source close to Sir James, who is scheduled to step down in September, said: “In the event, he met with frustration by the way the Foreign Office dealt with the Spanish question.”

The event will take place tonight (Friday) and Tony Hassini – Chairman and CEO of The International Magicians Society has flown over from New York especially for the presentation.

by Irena Bodnarec Tony founded the IMS in 1968 and it is now the world´s largest magic organization, with all the top names in the magic world notable members. David was nominated for the award by Internationally recognized director and choreographer Alberto Sperduto – but a panel of 22 judges makes the decision as to who ultimately receives the award. Past holders of the Merlin Award include Penn & Teller, Siegfried and Roy, Paul Daniels and David Copperfield – probably the best-known magician worldwide. Tony Hassini has said that David has the opportunity and capability to become the next Spanish Copperfield – a phenomenal endorsement of his skill and talent. Tony should know as he taught David Copperfield many of his tricks and invented iconic showstopper acts such as throwing cards through a pane of glass, driving an invisible car and levitating in the air. Even though now in his 70´s he still travels extensively, last year notching up over 30 countries and organized nine major competitions. He is only here in Benidorm for four days yet still found time to talk exclusively to RTN – he will then fly back to America before jetting off to China. Later this year he will be back in Europe, flying to London to present Uri Gellar the ¨Psychic Entertainer of the Century” award. Born in Cyprus – virtually deaf and later diagnosed as dyslexic too, he moved to London at the age of 16 a shy and almost reclusive teen before discovering the world of magic. He moved to the USA in 1964 and has homes in New York and Las Vegas – although hardly has the time to enjoy either as he is constantly travelling! Even now he is reinventing old tricks and illusions for todays performers and showed David one of his latest - maybe giving him some ideas for the future. The new show “Q” features 9 jaw dropping illusions, out of which ´Excalibur¨ is his favourite – wonder which one you´ll like best. Of the forthcoming presentation David said he “feels humbled yet excited to be receiving the award, which is on a par with an Oscar or BAFTA in the film and television industry”. The event will once again catapult Benidorm Palace to the fore of top class entertainment and is certainly a night not to be missed.

El Campello offers English film night free TONIGHT, FRIDAY, in the casa de la Cultura of El Campello residents can go and watch the film “Deja Vu” for free. Starring Denzel Washington, Val Kilmer and Paula Patton the 2006 action thriller also has elements of science fiction to keep the viewers on the edge of their seats. Directed by Tony Scott the film was nominated for five awards. The film starts at 7.30pm.

EUROPEAN TRAVELLERS are facing more disruptions as Spanish air traffic controllers still plan to have a four day strike action. by Jeanette Rice At the time of going to press the strikes, 8th,10th,12th and 14th of June, were still expected to go ahead. As reported in RTN last week the controllers will down tools for two hours each morning and two hours each afternoon across Spain. Severe delays are expected and it is advisable for anyone travelling on these day to check with their airline about any possible delays. Meanwhile, in Madrid, Ryanair passengers have been left without their luggage as baggage handlers have been staging an indefinite strike.

The handlers’ union says the strike action is due to Ryanair planning to cut the workers salary by 30%. A Ryanair spokesperson said “all flights to and from Madrid are running as normal however, customers have been requested to travel with cabin baggage only and have been offered the choice of transferring to alternative flights or airports”. Again at the time of going to press this action was still taking place but passengers are advised to check with the airline if they are flying from Madrid.

Iceland abolishes law which orders Basques to be killed on sight

ICELAND HAS repealed a 400-year-old law which said Spaniards from the Basque Country should be killed as soon as they set foot in the Westfjords region. The law, which applied only in Westfjords – a northern peninsula jutting out into the sea, and the most remote part of Iceland – dated back to 1615 when Basque whalers ran aground in Strandir, in the far north of the Westfjords. The Westfjords sheriff at the time, Ari Magnusson, declared that any Basque people found in the Westfjords could be legally killed on the spot. The law has stood ever since, although it has not been enacted for centuries. “The decision to do away with the decree was more symbolic than anything else,” said Jonas Gudmundsson, Westfjords district commissioner, when he officially repealed the law.

World’s first-ever murder victim’s skeleton found in Spain A DEATH 430,000 years ago may be the first confirmed murder in human history. Scientists using modern forensic techniques say the victim was probably killed by two blows to the head before being tossed down a cave system shaft. The truth of what happened at the Sima de los Huesos (Pit of Bones) site in northern Spain, was revealed after researchers in Madrid pieced together 52 fragments of a near-complete skull. Two holes close together above the left eye were caused by separate impacts from the same object. The injuries were not consistent with an accidental fall down the 43ft vertical shaft, said researchers from the Centre for the Evolution and Human Behaviour. The Spanish and US-led international team concluded: “Given that either of the two traumatic events was likely lethal, the presence of multiple blows implies an intention to kill.”

EMAUS calls in the receiver COMMUNITY SUPPORT group EMAUS has gone into voluntary receivership in a bid to survive a financial crisis and continue its work along the Costa Blanca. by Jack Troughton Believed to have debts running into millions of Euros, the charity said it had presented a “voluntary state of insolvency” that would allow its work of 36 years to continue. And charities supporting the organisation – especially the nine children’s homes across the region – have appealed to the public to keep supporting their work. They have pledged to continue to insure youngsters will suffer as little as possible in the uncertainties surrounding EMAUS. RTN has frequently reported the money woes within the organisation – including key workers being unpaid for months – and the heroic determination of expat charities to keep it afloat. Last month it appeared a white knight was about to step in but the rescue deal stalled. In a statement, EMAUS’ Montserrat Fiter said a decision was taken to “present a voluntary state of insolvency to guarantee the work EMAUS has been doing for 36 years can continue. “You all know the causes: the last four years of economic crisis; non-payment from the government; the fall of the banks; and the loss of credit lines – together have provoked in EMAUS a grave financial situation.” Montse said it was important the public knew of the situation and how EMUAS would continue to help people with problems and keep its team of workers together. SUPPORT “Now more than ever we ask all of you that have always supported our cause for your collaboration; together we can further our cause a give a better life to people with huge difficulties. Your friendship and help are needed more than ever.”

And EMAUS founder Francisco Nadal Ivars said moving into voluntary receivership would allow the charity to reach agreement with creditors and guarantee the viability of the organisation. “It is something the EMAUS committee has done because of the economic difficulties we are in,” he said. “We will continue to help and protect those who depend on us – the minors and women at risk in the shelter. “Because we have called in the official receiver does not mean we will cease to exist.” It is understood the organisations owes huge amounts in unpaid social security contributions; money to the taxman, and cash to the banks and suppliers. Carole Saunders, President of Friends of the Children of EMAUS, said the youngsters lived in family units in different homes. “The problem is if EMAUS fails the children would be put in homes in different places – they would not go to the same schools or have the same friends. It would be a huge upheaval. “I think it is going to be very, very difficult for EMAUS to get out of the economic mess they are in – but they still need all the help they can get to feed the children.” She added: “We as a charity have been told by social workers not to buy anything for the houses themselves at the moment – because if everything has to go to pay debts, everything will go from the houses – but to keep supporting the kids.”

HELP And Jody Kirby, founder of Grant A Wish, said it was time to “step on the gas” to help the youngsters with the necessities of life and “put luxuries on the back burner”. She said it meant insuring money was spent on the children “and it is spent for maximum benefit”. Jody added: “The situation is terrible and tragic. The carers deserve a medal – they are in their working and not getting paid. They have the biggest hearts; they are like parents and cannot just walk away but try and give the kids a good quality of life. “I hope it does not come to the point where the children are uprooted and they are moved to different parts of the country. The homes are like families and the kids should not be split up – I cannot bear to think of that.” And Tony Grande, of Make A Smile, said the voluntary receivership process matched EMUAS debts against the money it was owed. “They do have large assets.” He added: “We are talking about people, human beings, and this situation has to have a solution. “They need help with day to day things, things like gas bottles and food. We have to help over the next month or two months until things settle down. “The homes are not closed – it would be an absolute nightmare if they were! Where would all the kids go? There is a lot of politics involved, and these kids are nothing to do with politics.”

THE CONTROVERSIAL 15-year rule, which prevents over a million Britons living abroad from voting in UK elections, is to be scrapped – but not in time for a referendum on EU membership. by Jack Troughton Campaigners have welcomed the ‘Votes for life Bill’ that will scrap legislation that has prevented expats from having a voice, a conservative manifesto promise. But they have been left disappointed the 15-year criteria will apply in the forthcoming ‘in-out’ referendum poll due before the end of 2017. Expat Brian Cave, a leading member of the campaign has lived in France for 17 years, and is pleased the voting rule will be consigned to history. However, he said of the promised ballot over EU membership, he said: “I’m pretty cross about that. It’s ridiculous. “The referendum should hear the voice of those who are most affected by the result. Any British citizen living within the states of the EU should have a vote.” And Tory MP sir Roger Gale, who has supported the campaign from within the House of Commons, said: “We’ve made a clear promise over the 15-year rule and if it’s going to be done at all, then it ought to be done in time for people to vote in this referendum.” The Liberal Democrats in Europe is concerned those who rely on EU ‘freedom of movement rights’ for their residence outside their home countries will miss out in having a say – whether they are Brits living in other EU states or Europeans living in the UK.

WELCOME Giles Goodall, chairman of the group, said: “We strongly welcome the government’s plan to end the disenfranchisement of British citizens abroad, as the Liberal Democrats called for in our General Election manifesto. The 15-year rule is an anomaly which must be brought to an end. “However, it is disgraceful that the government does not see fit to give this very same group the right to vote on our future membership of the European Union, despite the fact that the future residence of around two million Brits living in other EU countries will be directly affected by the vote.” And he said it was “scandalous” that EU citizens living in Britain would also be denied a voice having moved to the UK in good faith “and now face the possibility of losing their right to remain due to a referendum in which they are not allowed to vote”. The government has pledged to sort out the voting chaos for expats during the General election when many did not get postal vote papers in time. It said the Votes for Life Bill would make it easier for expats to be counted at the ballot and encourage more people living abroad to take part. And veteran campaigner Harry Shindler – who has taken the voting issue to Brussels and Downing Street – has called on everyone to email Prime Minister David Cam-

Manners cost nothing

IS IT me or does everybody seem to be getting ruder. It seems that no matter where you go, whether it be the local bank or sitting in a bar, people’s manners seem to have disappeared. Many would say that this is just the younger generation but I am finding it with people of any age. I thought living in Spain, everybody would be a lot more friendly and relaxed with a big smile on their face but this isn’t so. Pushing and shoving, hissing and spitting are just some of the things that I witness on a daily basis. Unhelpful shop assistants, rude customers, bad drivers and ignorant pedestrians are just a small sample of how the world is today. Come on people, smile and remember that manners cost nothing. Fake notes

WE RECENTLY obtained a counterfeit 50€ note from our bank cash machine. We are sure we got it from there as we were running low on cash, withdrew the money and then went straight to get petrol for the car. The cashier at the service station pointed out the note was counterfeit. We went back to the bank and complained but they said all their money comes from the Bank of Spain and counterfeit notes are impossible. Basically they were passing the buck. We spoke with the manager at our branch and he promised to investigate, but in the end said the bank would not change the bad note. What chance do we have here in Spain if the banks pass on bad notes? We will be very careful in future and withdraw money only over the counter. Johnathan Jupe, Quesada

Paying for infrastructure I RECEIVED in November a letter from Iberdrola informing me that they were going to install a new smart meter, but, as my original electricity supply which is installed via a pole on the house roof is now obsolete, it would have to be upgraded to comply with the latest regulations. They quoted me 9000€ to supply a new pole and 85 metres of cable to a modern updated meter box, but this would not get me connected to my original meter box which is on the other side of the house, a distance of 60 metres. I have been told that I need another contractor to lay a trench around my house to connect the new meter to the house. Can anyone explain why I have to pay for the electrical supply company’s infrastructure, so that company can comply with the latest norms and regulations? I am a pensioner, so how does Iberdrola think pensioners can afford this? Are there other people who have similar problems as I don’t see any letters of complaint on this subject? Caution when parking in Benidorm as new pay to park areas are made 14

MANY MOTORISTS may find themselves getting a parking ticket, if they are not careful to check the zone where they are parking, as new pay and display areas have appeared in the town of Benidorm. by Jeanette Rice Immediately following the elections several areas of parking in Benidorm, which had previously been the white zones (no payment required), have been re-designated as blue zones (where you are required to buy a ticket). These areas have been free to park for many years so it is anticipated that the majority of motorists will not notice the sudden change and find themselves with a ticket on the windscreen of their vehicles. One of the areas to change to the blue zone is the long road that runs up past the main post office in the town, and although this had been partly pay and display the entire length past the town hall is now also a blue zone. Opposition to the new areas say that this may be the tip of the iceberg as UTE Sice-Auplasa, the private company appointed by the

previous council, may impose further changes to free zones. The proposal, had been approved prior to the elections, and went ahead with the votes of PSOE and Liberal parties although the PP and mayor had voted against the changes.

Blood donations rise in La Nucia

LA NUCIA saw a rise in the amount of people attending their blood donation clinic last week. On average, the health centre reported, â&#x20AC;&#x153;we normally only receive 30 people but this time we are delighted to have had 55 people attendâ&#x20AC;?. The increase was welcomed as, on a daily basis, the Valencian region normally requires approximately 300 donations and although many more would donate if they were able there are certain requirements for donors. To donate you must be over 18 but under 65 and have a weight of no less than 50 kilos. Each person can donate up to four times a year for men but only three times a year for women. You can even donate if you have high cholesterol. The next blood donor collection for La Nucia will be held on Tuesday June 23rd at the health centre in the town between 5pm and 8.30pm.

Boxes of angry bees spill inside car

IN ONLY a style that could be pulled off by the Benidorm cast, Friday evening in Benidorm at the UK Cabaret Club became one of the most famous karaoke evenings of all times. Raising funds for the local charity in the Marina Baixa area, Emaus, the queues formed early and quickly, going from the doors of the club right round the corner past the Red Lion and towards Morgans Tavern. Not surprisingly as the entrance was only ten euros per person, and the opportunity for residents and holiday makers to see some of their favourite Benidorm TV stars was the great crowd puller that the charity evening needed. Jake Canuso, who plays Mateo in the programme said, “we all absolutely love being here in Benidorm and in our eight years the town has really been kind to us, we wanted to give something back and for a good cause”. Singing with Jake were his co stars Sherrie Hewson (Joyce), Janine Duvitski (Jacqueline), Tony Maudsley (Kenneth), Johnny Vegas (The Oracle), Elsie Kelly (Noreen), Danny Walters (Tiger) and Tim Healy (Les). Sherrie Hewson, Jannie Duvitski and Elsie Kelly sang The Clapping Song, whilst Jake Canuso did his rendition of Volare. Tony Maudsley, who loves karaoke performed Wonderful World, Little White Bull and Good Morning Benidorm. Tim Healy also sang more than one with his Stand by Your Man and Desperado, one of the young ladies favourite, Danny Walters performed Dream Lover. The event, hosted by Derren Litten, the writer and creator of Benidorm, was a resounding success and to the surprise of the audience even Dame Joan Collins, who was unable to attend, had sent in a pre-recorded message to the cast and fans. THIS WAS the terrifying reality that one driver had to deal with when a box of bees tipped over inside his car while he was driving. Police in Montana, US, pulled over the driver after thousands of Russian honey bees were spotted inside the cabin. The motorist was transporting five separate hives, each containing thousands of bees, and police initially believed that he was transporting them illegally, but when they sought guidance from the state’s apiarist, they realised that the man didn’t actually need a permit for the unusual passengers. Unsurprisingly, it was still deemed unsafe and the driver was booked for careless driving because the bees obscured the view from the windscreen.

Divers to clean the seabed in Albir

READERS MAY notice a flurry of activity in Albir today, Friday, but are urged not to panic as it is the local diving centres starting their clean-up of the Serra Gelada sea bed. The cleaning will take place from 9.30 am until 12.30 pm in the waters near the lighthouse of Albir. The divers are removing rubbish items that have been discarded by those on boats as well as rubbish that has come from beaches or walkers to the lighthouse area. There is also due to be a conference to raise awareness, especially with swimmers, fishermen and boat owners of the need to preserve the seabed.

Finestrat town hall opens registration for swimming lessons by Jeanette Rice

THE SPORTS council for Finestrat has opened registration for children who would require swimming lessons. The courses are designed for children between 6 months and 14 years old and will last from 22nd June until 10th July. The lessons will take place in the mornings, Monday through until Friday, at a cost of 20 euros per child. The lessons are designed not only to introduce the younger age to the water and overcome any fears that they may have, but also to help with coordination, movement and strengthening muscles in the aquatic environment. Anyone interested in registering their children can either go to the sports hall of Finestrat between 9.30 am and 2pm or 4pm until 9pm. Alternatively you can call 610 100 822.

Cameo part for Benidorm Mayor

By Irena Bodnarec OUTGOING BENIDORM Mayor, Agustin Navarro landed a much coveted cameo part in the ITV Benidorm series, currently being filmed in the resort. He plays himself as Mayor and will be seen awarding character Tiger – played by actor Danny Walters and Joey – played by Nathan Byron ¨The Pride of Benidorm Awards´. The scene was recorded on Wednesday at the Melia Hotel and this current eight series will once again see the return of Hollywood actress Joan Collins, who plays CEO of the Solana Group, Crystal Hennessy-Vass. Filming of this eight series began on March 23 and has seen the cameras set up all around the resort, including along the Albir promenade last week where Johnny Vegas was seen with a tall leggy blonde. The Mayor has taken an active interest in the filming of the series and made several visits to shoot locations, including the Mirador in the Old Town last month.

Farewell Freddie ‘the fighter’

by Jack Troughton TINY BABY Freddie Jackson flew home yesterday (Thursday) six-weeks after making a dramatic and highly publicised entrance to the world three months prematurely. Scheduled for a July birth, Freddie was born by emergency caesarean section as mum and dad Karla Hornby and Jordan Jackson took a planned – and blessed by doctors – break in Benidorm. Karla’s waters broke by the poolside and she was rushed to San Juan Hospital in Alicante where little Freddie – weighing just 2lb, the same as a bag of sugar – took up residence in the premature baby unit. Nurses called him ‘Frederico the Champion”. And having doubled in weight – he is now worth more than two bags of sugar – he won the blessing of medical staff to go home to Bolton – although for a time he will still be in hospital. From Freddie’s birth, the couple were told their stay was open ended depending on his progress. Karla, 29, flew with her little son in a special flight. Jordan, 21, had left Spain on Tuesday evening, laden with clothes, baby equipment, and a large cuddly toy presented by Grant A Wish – the char-

ity supported the couple throughout an enforced hotel stay. And Freddie’s older sister Charlie was in for a surprise. She was not told in advance of the family’s return – Karla said: “We are just going to pick her up from school...I’ll probably start crying.” She said the experience had been “the most stressful thing in my life” but despite the language difficulties she said: “we have made some good friends here.” THANKS And she thanked Grant A wish, saying: “The help we have received from the charity has been absolutely amazing. We will definitely stay in touch.” The pair did manage to discover the beach and enjoyed a trip into Alicante port but everything was dictated by the timing of twice daily trips to see their little man. Karla said Freddie would still need assisted feeds in hospital but was learning to bottle feed, taking just 5mm a time. “Once the feeding is done, we have cracked it!” She said: “He is still very much a fighter and is always smiling. Although he is only six weeks old, he has a proper

personality. Everyone back home is definitely going to spoil him.” Jordan said his young son was always awake when he visited. “He is a daddy’s boy. He is fit, well and strong. The nurses have been wonderful, brilliant. We call them his Spanish aunties.” Karla admitted she was looking forward to being home. “I have been playing some Harry Potter films just to hear English voices...and Freddie enjoys a nap we might see some rain.”

Getting your Full Monte by Keith Nicol THE FULL MONTE are the International CB supporters club for C.D. Montesinos. And while sometimes the standard of football on the field may leave a little to be desired, that never dampens the spirits of the Full Monte who now have an International Supporters base in excess of 400 members, with that number constantly growing. The Full Monte started to support C.D. Montesinos in the summer of 2011. The aim was to raise the profile of this small local football team and help support it financially. The influx of international support has truly risen spectators numbers from one man and his dog level to an average of more than 200 at home games. As well as financial backing, the Full Monte has supplied the club with various items of equipment and sportswear for the players., ranging from track suits to training bibs to footballs. Raising the average attendance from 40 to 200 has made it one of the best supported teams in the lower three divisions of the Spanish league and the club are hopefull of having a good bid for promotion next season, with a lot of youth players coming up the ranks. Since starting to support the team, the Full Monte has introduced many new events and activities into the club’s calendar. These include awards for the Player of the year, the Players Player of the year and the most improved player of the year, which were presented at their annual end of season dinner, which was attended by over 100 members and guests on Tuesday evening. They also present a ‘Man of the Match’ award at all club games, both home and away. To keep members updated, a free Newsletter is printed by one of their sponsors Inks.ES, five times a season as well as a team sheet at all games. Each season members put up 1,000 posters around Los Montesinos giving details of forthcoming home games. Every Christmas they present the players and management with a Chrismas Hamper and this year gave over 350€ worth of food to local charity Caritas via the town hall social services department.

The Full Monte has a web site and facebook page plus match reports are sent out each week to the local press, as well as emailed to all our members both in Spain and overseas. For fun we run a predictor league competition with cash prizes for winners. The Full Monte is supported by both TORREGOLF EU, who play golf every week and has an annual Full Monte golf day open to all the members, and also is one of Spain’s leading lights when it comes to promoting Walking Football, with the Monte Mentals’ being one of the most proactive in the country, details of which can be found on our web site. As with all clubs and associations, they need money to survive and so sell merchandise and name cards at all games. On the social side, a lunch is held at a variety of different res-

taurants every month that is attended by over 50 members every time. A Sport quiz, pool competition, darts, par three golf and other fun and other social events are also planned. On Tuesday, 16th June the Full Monte are holding their A.G.M. at Bar Esquina, Los Montesinos, starting at 8pm. Drinks and a buffet will be provided for members old and new. Membership renewals for next season can also be done on the night. Next season we hope to help finance the installation of seating along the popular side of ground, situated next to the sports complex. Yolande Pickett and a male nurse from the Hospital de Levante spoke about emergency medical procedures and demonstrated CPR to the 138 U3A members at the meeting â&#x20AC;&#x201C; including nine new members. Expat teenager heading to Newcastle United makes British Press by Jeanette Rice

CALLUM DOUGLAS, aged 16, is to have the chance of a lifetime this summer when he goes to Newcastle United for a weeks trial. Callum moved here with his family in 2006 has always been a staunch Newcastle United fan as with the rest of his family and has returned to the club on many occasions to see his team play. Callum started his youth career at Wallsend Boys Club in the North East of England as a defender and his passion for football continued when the family moved to Spain, with his father, Ken Scott (Douglas), supporting him all the way and even coaching Callum at the beginning. RTN spoke to Callum who said “I am really excited, this is an amazing opportunity. If the trial goes well I may be offered an apprenticeship or even a place in the under 21 team, it will all depend on if they like what they see”. Callum, who currently plays for Alfaz de Pi youth team, is also being wooed by Sunderland as well as two teams here, Valencia and Elche. The 6ft 3in striker has played in various positions for various local clubs here in Spain. When Callum first joined La Nucia’s team his position changed to being a striker, obviously a good move as he scored 288 goals over six season. In 2012-13 his position again changed to midfield and still he managed to net 12 goals. Following on from the La Nucia team, Callum joined the Alfaz del Pi Youth team and continued scoring goals and has continued to fine tune his skills, even being compared to former Newcastle striker Andy Carroll. Juan Antonio Lopez was Callum’s first coach when he started playing for La Nucia at the age of 6, Juan is now the coach for the Alfaz del Pi youth team and Callum moved there two years ago to be coached by him again. The coaching skills as well as the talented players saw the Alfaz del Pi youth team become league champions last week. Callum will go to Newcastle United for his weeks trial the first week of July with his father, and RTN will keep you posted with how it goes.

HAM Radio from the Delfin S61 by Keith Nicol

THE AMATEUR Radio Association of Vega Baja (URE), and the Spanish Amateur Radio Union (LRIs), will both be taking part in a special Radio Museum Day on Saturday. Both associations are composed mostly of amateurs of the region of Vega Baja and will be taking part in the special day. For the third consecutive year, over the weekend from Saturday 6th through Sunday, June 7th, HAM Radio transmissions will take place from the submarine “Delfin S-61” and the Patrol Customs Boat “Albatros III” over a period running for 48 hours straight. Museums from all over the world take part in the event that links floating museums from all over the world, one of these being the Delfin S61, which is a unique Spanish vessel, being the only submarine in Spain open to members of the public. The event is part of celebrations for Ship Museums, organised by the “Battleship New Jersey Amateur Radio Station”, which is located in New Jersey USA, and with the cooperation of the City of Torrevieja. The Amateur Radio Association of Vega Baja (LRIs) and the Spanish Amateur Radio Union (URE ) will be on air with the call sign “EG5DEL”. Transmissions will start on Saturday, June 6th at 9am and cease on Sunday June 7th during the afternoon. The aim is to contact other ship museums around the

world through amateur radio to over a hundred countries. This is done using various modes of transmission, radio and digital modes on the HF bands (3 MHz. To 30 Mhz.) Using some basic English and the “Q Code”. It is also planned to broadcast live images of activities, from the submarine and patrol boat, which may viewed online from anywhere in the world on: www.arvb.es or www.qrz.es and putting in the call sign EG5DEL. More than fifteen volunteers belonging to both radio groups along with several transmitters, antennas, computers, power supplies, microphones, headphones, will all be installed as is necessary to make

a success of the activity. The “Delfin S-61” is 58 meters long, with a capacity for 60 people and was donated to the city of Torrevieja by the Ministry of Defence of the Government of Spain. It is the first and only armed submarine that has been turned into a Ship’s Museum in Spain. It open for this purpose in 2004. Beside the submarine, as part of the floating exhibition, is 32 meter long “Albatros III”, a former Marine Customs Surveillance Boat, which was assigned to the Ministry of Finance. The display also contains torpedoes, mines and other marine items, many dating back to WWII.

Abelardo Carballo turns 101

By Keith Nicol EDUARDO DOLON and Inmaculada Montesinos, representing Torrevieja’s Town Hall, visited Abelardo Carball on Tuesday June 2nd, 2015, at his home in the urbanization Los Balcones. Abelardo Carballo Belmonte celebrated his 101st birthday and Eduardo and Inmaculada congratulate him, sharing a slice of birthday cake, and presenting him with a plaque commemorating this event on which has been etched “with our congratulations and affection on your birthday.” Abelardo Carballo was born in 1914 in the Galician city of Ourense but has called Torrevieja home since 1970, when he moved to this house in Los Balcones, 45 years ago. Having worked in the military in his youth Abelardo, is in very good health, and shared many memories with the mayor about his numerous experiences throughout the years that he has lived in the city of Torrevieja. Noting that Eduardo is still only 39, these memories were truly before Eduardo’s time.

Gran Hotel Bali stair race a huge success

by Jeanette Rice ON SATURDAY 150 hopeful competitors lined up for the annual stair race. This was the 12th year that the event had been hosted by the Gran Hotel Bali. Starting at 5pm the athletes were sent up the 52 floors in groups of three at one minute intervals. The top 20 athletes were released every minute individually against the clock. With 924 steps or 190 vertical metres ascent ahead of them the competitors were cheered along on each floor

by friends, family and members of the public. The terrace area on the top floor was saved for the organisers and timekeepers. The time the athletes were trying to beat was 4 minutes 33 seconds set by Angel Llorens last year, however his record was safe with Celko Tomas Slovak coming in first with a time of 4 minutes 39 seconds with last years winner, Angel Llorens, coming in second for the men. For the

women, Lenka Svabikova came first with a time of five minutes 47 seconds. Amongst the other competitors were many doing the race for fun or for charitable organisations. One of the entrants did the 924 steps in his full firemanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s uniform, which was not an easy task, but something that, in Benidorm, the fire fighters have to do quite often when attending most of the high rise buildings due to lack of suitable ladders.

Wills and inheritance of expatriates (British, Irish, etc.) in Spain Some clarifications on the European Regulation 650/2012. DEAR READERS, Our office receives many enquiries regarding the European Regulation 650/2012, which will apply from the 17th of August this year (2015), and the inheritance relating to deaths that occur after that date (17th). As explained in previous articles, the applicable law to the succession and inheritance law in Spain will, in principle, be the law of the country where the deceased has his habitual residence at the time of death. However, Article 22 allows the testator / testatrix to explicitly opt for the law of his / her nationality, in the case of the British, opt for the law of England and Wales, or Scotland, etc. This Regulation is about the law that should govern inheritance and succession, but does not relate to the Inheritance Tax Law applicable. The applicable law to the succession is important, since as per the Spanish Inheritance Law, the descendants have the right to about 2/3 of the estate. It is possible

there are different rules in the country of origin of foreigners living in Spain, and they are not forced to leave to their descendants a share, as required by the Spanish law. Therefore it is very important to get proper advice and make a Spanish Will or review the existing one, to know which law will apply to your inheritance and succession , and, where appropriate, to opt for the law of your nationality, if you want it to be the applicable one. SOCIAL MEDIA is now a prime area that investment scams are targeting. Be careful of very clever advertising using your friends to lure you in. I AM came across one very recently on Facebook where a friend of mine had supposedly ‘liked’ a company that claimed to compare rates of investment interest from all providers available for Expats in Spain. The rates offered looked extremely good, as an IFA I am supposed to know all the best rates available so I was intrigued to know more. It transpired that no matter what type of investment I requested (Income, growth, 5 years, 7 year, 9 years) I was offered the same provider (whose company name sounded good but I know is not). All of the investments were offering me guaranteed capital with high rates of returns which are not possible in my opinion. They all offered NO access

during the term and I wouldn’t be 100% sure the company would still be around at the end of the term. I put my email details and phone number to request personal information – I now find myself getting several calls per week and at least one email a day from this company. What I would always urge anyone to do is always get a second opinion on anything that is advertised especially through social media. When I asked the friend who had supposedly ‘liked’ the page about this they had never even heard of the comparison website. What are available for Ex-Pats living in Spain are the Spanish Compliant Bonds that can offer security as well as a very good rate of return and can cater for all risk profiles from the Cautious Investor to the more

John Hiatt, Larry Graham, Richard Galliano, Joe Louis Walker and Janiva Magness are just some of the great artists that will grace the stage of the 2015 San Javier Jazz Festival. The complete Festival programme also includes Jackson Browne, Dianne Reeves, Brad Mehldau, and Tony DeSare, among other stars The complete schedule of the 18th edition, which includes numerous artists visiting the festival for the first time offers one of the most eclectic mixes in recent years. Vocalist Dianne Reeves will receive the XVIII Festival of Jazz San Javier Prize, dedicated to the memory of Joe Sample, Charlie Haden, Jimmy Scott and Tim Hauser, (one of the founders of Manhattan Transfer), who died last year. The Festival, is held from 3rd to 31st July, with 24 concerts taking place over 13 nights.

Gardening in Spain is great for the retired - Part 2 This weeks column is the promised follow on from last week. - Design the garden for a minimum or realistic amount of maintenance whether you intend to do it yourself or employ a gardener. Re the latter recognise that when we came to Spain there were only some 100,000 foreign residents. There are now 5,000,000 and many are looking for work as a gardener but many will have much less gardening knowledge and ability than you do! Before you employ a gardener purchase one or two of the books listed below to be ahead of a gardener from day one.

But it’s essential to match plants to the microclimate of your emergent garden and apartment terraces.

The lists of the most practical plants for Spain presented in ‘ Your Garden in Spain – From planning to planting and maintenance’, ‘ Apartment Gardening Mediterranean Style’, ‘How to use less water in your garden’ and ‘Living well from our garden Mediterranean style’ will be good start points. - Lawns are a chore in Spain especially as one gets too old to use the mower when temperatures in the sun are in the 40’s and 50’s and they are very thirsty! So consider larger terraced areas, wider paths and stone chipping areas than you would have used in Northern Europe. Ensure that paths and steps are well laid and wide enough to accommodate wheel

chairs and walking frames if elderly and infirm persons are to be resident or visit. If you have a pool fit a pool lift for helping such persons to enter and leave safely. - Do include a vegetable patch or raised beds. With Spain’s two springs, spring and autumn, one has two major sowing and planting seasons so growing and harvesting fresh ecological/organic vegetables 365 days a year is very possible in most areas in which expatriates settle. And vegetable growing is just as easy, indeed it can be easier, on apartment terraces as illustrated in ‘Apartment Gardening Mediterranean Style’. - And don’t forget all the delicious fruits that can be grown in Spain. ‘Growing Healthy Fruit in Spain’ is designed to get you off to a successful start.

SAT rescued by Queen by Keith Nicol LAST YEAR Chess, the most flamboyant and famous Queen Tribute band in Spain, sold out Torrevieja’s Municipal Theatre and had the audience dancing in the aisles all night long. Having reformed after a short hiatus, Chess are bringing their Queen Tribute show to Restaurante Los Rosales in Guardamar on Saturday June 6th. The band, who are known for their showmanship and all out audience participation have not been at the venue for 18 months due to being booked up all over the country. Devotees of the band reserved tickets as early as January of this year as the last three shows were all sell-outs. The new

line up is still headed by front man Charlie Joss, a showman like no other. Audiences can expect the unexpected and a show to be talked about for months afterwards. A raffle will be held by SAT volunteers on the night. They are in the process of trying to raise a staggering 13,000€, the cost of purpose built kennels, for a new location in San Isidro. Formed in 1992 the charity homes as many as 90 rescue dogs at one time. With hundreds of animals needing new homes, the new centre will cater for puppies and larger dogs in a more spacious setting including an isolation area. 41 Club’s ninth birthday CALPE AND District 41 Club was honoured to have UK National President Terry Cooper at an enjoyable celebration of the ninth anniversary of its charter presentation. by Jack Troughton Chairman Andrew Johnson welcomed Terry and his wife Lin to Restaurante Puerto Blanco last Thursday night, along with other guests including past President Gordon Macnab and Elaine, Tangent National Treasurer Jill Harris, the widow of past President Vaughan. The 41 Club is an association for retired members of the service organisation Round Table – the name underlining the time to switch associations. UK President Terry inducted new member Colin Donadio to the club and awarded Chairman Andrew with the treasured President’s 70th Anniversary gold pin for recruitment. He praised the club for its policy of growth and said fellowship and hospitality were the mark of the organisation – together with the chairman reflecting on the companionship of the whole of the Round Table family and its good works. A total of 59 people sat down to dine, 35 members of the club, ex-Tablers yet to join, and

lady associates – these included members of the neighbouring Costa Blanca 41 Club. A cheque for £100 was presented to the president for his charity, the Stroke Association, and the evening was rounded off with music by Barry ‘The Swingman’ Peters. The club’s next big event is the Christmas Ladies night at Restaurant Grand Sol on 3rd December, while coming up is the annual ‘Billy Boules’ petanc contest again rivals Costa Blanca 41 Club at Villa Gadea, Altea, on Wednesday 17th June. WHILST ONLY considered for some as a necessary stop-over when changing flights, this cosmopolitan city should not be overlooked as a holiday destination in its own right. With direct flights from both Madrid & Barcelona, and great connections from Alicante, this is a relatively short flight for a holiday destination, averaging 7 hours direct. This makes it a perfect location for a short break, shopping trip, or extending your stop-over en-route to break up a much longer journey. One of the most modern cities worldwide, Dubai offers crystal clear waters lapping at white sandy beaches. Many hotels have their own private beaches and whilst alcohol is very much restricted for the residents, it is relatively easy to enjoy a drink on the beach of your hotel, or in your chosen restaurant. And what choices of both! Famous names lend themselves to many of the restaurants in Dubai, with Jamie Oliver, Gary Rhodes and Gordon Ramsay leading some of the British Contingent! European, Michelin Stars, Asian Fusion, Mediterranean & Middle Eastern restaurant choices, in locations overlooking lit-up poolside walkways and gardens, whilst the most elaborate of hotels, the Burj Al-Arab offers dining on it´s own private island, simply set with a table, chairs, sand and beach! Entertainment in these venues can be sword-fighting shows, belly dancers and henna-tattoos whilst you dine (participation not obligatory!) The hotels – well, who doesn´t know that Dubai is home to some of the world´s most elaborate (and expensive) hotels? Including one of the most well-known, and recently object of a documentary series, the Burj Al Arab. Whilst a night in this exclusive and chic hotel is perhaps beyond the budget of some of us, (around 1500€+ for one night!), there are some more budget friendly hotels still offering a staggering amount of luxury for your stay. Hotels in the Jumeirah area average around 500€ per night (bear in mind the sheer wealth that is concentrated in this city!). The good news is, that although many of these hotels would be just a little too expensive for the majority of us, Dubai is an emerging destination for Spain, and so package deals to the city are plentiful. A combination of flights, transfers and hotels (with many varied choices) can frequently be reserved from a price of around 800€. For activities, you can take a Dhow River Boat Cruise, a complete evening out with dinner, dancing and entertainment on board, or perhaps a Camel ride in the Sahara Desert. For the more modern (or more adventurous) you can also take an excursion in a 4x4 over the Sand Dunes. The shopping malls are stocked with all the many designer names you would expect, with many of the Malls themselves being the excursion. The largest Mall in the world, the Dubai Mall is a must see when you are in this city, with its spectacular dancing waters show at the Dubai Fountains a perfect way to round off a day´s extravagent shopping! And for the last word in Extravagant, consider reserving Afternoon Tea at the Burj Al Arab. For a price of approximately 120€ pp, you will be treated to unequalled pampering, from the private entrance of the hotel (only those with a reservation are allowed inside the hotel), to the stunning setting on the 54th Floor, this is a truly unique experience. Bring your appetite to enjoy the mouth watering selection of teas, coffees, sandwiches, cakes and scones. With only two seasons, hot and really really hot, Dubai is best visited between the months of October and April. During the summer months, temperatures are regularly higher than 100 degrees Farenheit, making most activities outside just too hot to contemplate.

ALTHOUGH TODAY’S main story includes famous folks at the Carlton Hotel in Cannes, it’s more about the event and the reason why they were there. Our showbiz heroes were at the Heart Fund Generous People Dinner Gala, an organisation that offers heart care for impoverished children around the world, with heart surgeons donating their time to perform costly operations. Before eating, a grand auction took place, during which Leonardo DiCaprio got into a bidding war with Paris Hilton over, of all things, a Chanel handbag. Bidding €10,000 for the extremely swanky blue Neoprene flap bag with embroidered flowers and winning it must have been an interesting moment for Leonardo, but he did explain later that the bag was for his mum Irmelin Indenbirken … never doubted you big boy! The New York Post covered the event saying Paris took the defeat well writing “Paris still had fun at the bash despite her loss, staying for the whole event, and feasting on a fancy dinner,” not too heavy on the pies I hope young lady! The newspaper also reported “Leonardo was laughing and enjoying himself with his friends throughout the night,” any man would if they had just got a fancy handbag for their mother. It was quite some charity event raising €5.1 million overall, with the bulk of it coming from a mystery donor pledging a staggering €5 million. This quite remarkable organisation will be using the money to buy a private plane, which will then be used to fly doctors and nurses to remote areas to perform surgeries and screen children for heart disease. It is said that there is no greater feeling than giving to those less fortunate, and the Heart Fund Generous People Dinner Gala fits neatly into that box, and then some.

Prince Harry did a bit of a royal shuffle last week. Freshly back from Australia H checked into Cirencester Park Polo Club in Gloucester then loaded up a helicopter with cuddly toys he bought down under and flew to Anmer Hall in Norfolk where bro William introduced him to Princess Charlotte. Harry gave the kid the toys then flew back to the polo match which he sadly lost 8 – 7. AAAWW!! Like Cher, The Rolling Stones have been doing it for 50 years, and are still out there on the road. They´ve already performed sell-out shows in San Diego, Columbus Ohio and Minneapolis, and they´ll be back onstage tomorrow evening June 6th in Dallas Texas, and will complete the 15 date tour in Quebec Canada on Wednesday 15th July. For a group of guys in their 70´s it’s quite remarkable! A teacher in America took a close look at the words of pop songs that had reached No 1 and found out that the lyrics, such as word length and readability has been in serious decline since 2005. He said “they’re more suitable for primary school children, if you take out the expletives and sexual references! The ‘dumbest’ hip hop lyrics award goes to Beyoncé, with Kayne West a close second.

Possessive Pronouns WE WERE looking at “possessives” last week

and we haven’t quite finished with them yet. TO BE more specific, we went through possessive adjectives, and this is what we found out that they look like: My - mi, mis Your (familiar singular) - tu, tus His/her/its/your (formal) su, sus Our - nuestro, nuestra, nuestros, nuestras Your (familiar plural) - vuestro, vuestra, vuestros, vuestras Their/your (formal) - su, sus Now, you may or may not realize that we have not yet translated the word for “mine” or “yours” which are also “possessives”. These words are in fact possessive pronouns, not possessive adjectives, and I think this statement is going to require some more explanation. We saw that we can say, for example “This is my book”, in which case the word “my” describes the book as

belonging to me, so is therefore an adjective. However, I could also say “This book is mine”. We cannot say “This is mine book” and neither can we say “This book is my”, so it is clear that the words “my” and “mine” perform different functions. The word “mine” can be used to replace “book”, for example in the sentence “It is mine” (i.e. “It is my book”) and therefore is called a possessive pronoun. Now here are the possessive pronouns in English and Spanish. If you run your eye over these lists you will see that there are some overlaps between the two forms in both English and Spanish. English generally adds an “s” to the possessive adjective to make the pronoun, except in “his” and “its” which already have an “s” in the adjective form, whilst all the forms of “nuestro” and “vuestro” are the same as adjectives and pronouns in Spanish. This is why it’s very hard to translate these words singly without seeing them or hearing them in the context of a full sentence. You might find the following a good way of remembering exactly how we use possessive pronouns. When you listen to small children fighting over a toy you may well hear: “¡Es mío!” “No, es mío”, “No, es mío” and after a lot of pulling and tugging, one of them bites the other one, and the other one screams.

All friends from the Javea U3A walking group – this was an ‘unofficial’ outing led by Sue and Roger Hunton – they passed a historic fort 650m above sea level and had to negotiate a cave tunnel – a ‘forat’ – on hands and knees. And the circular route took them back to the promised reward of an enjoyable meal, along with welcome drinks, at Casa Susi in Maserof.

Skype problems HELLO AUNTY: As you always seem to be able to answer my computer problems for me I hope you might answer this one: for no reason just recently when I talk to my friends on Skype they can’t see me but I can see them - it is the same on both my main PC and tablet . I have updated the latest version of Skype. Thanks – Margaret.

Aunty says: It seems strange the same thing is happening on both a PC and tablet - two completely different pieces of equipment. The only things that I can think of that would cause this to happen on two different pieces of equipment is that you have turned off the camera option, and so you are not sending video to them. Now if it was happening on one piece of equipment only, then there are various checks you could do, like check the camera works in other applications, uninstall and reinstall Skype, perhaps reinstall the camera drivers (on the PC). Saving pictures and files

HOLA AUNTY: I have downloaded Dropbox to save my files & pictures, but it has slowed down my computer so much I have removed it, do you have any advice on an alternative site? David Aunty says: Rather than use a ‘cloud’ storage system like Dropbox, you can always use your own external hard drive or ‘usb’ pen drive to keep a back-up of your files. HI AUNTY: Quick question - is it better to leave my wireless router switched on all the time - or switched off when not in use? Regards, Derek Aunty says: To be honest that is really up to you. If you are not going to use it for longer periods, then yes, by all means turn it off. If you use it every day, keep it switched on. But if you want to save money, then how about a timer plug, so that it turns on the router at say 7am, and turns it off at midnight?

MICHAEL JACKSON had a son he called Blanket. I thought it was such a stupid name at the time but the more I think about it, what comfort does a blanket bring? Recently it was time to take the quilt off the bed in the warmer weather. Whenever I do this the weather seems to change and cold night time air enters through previously closed windows. My solution is to reach for my blanket. I sleep so well under it, even though I know it will be short lived and back in the cupboard again very soon as warmer climes bring a need to sleep with just a sheet. Maybe something within me is transported back to blanket days of childhood oblivion, when cuddled up on the sofa was the best place to be, always warm and cosy and protected. Blankets are effective, just like chicken soup and cough sweets. They always do what it says on the packet. comfy even if we are away from home. A blanket can always be relied on to do the job in hand. As a child I didn’t have a security blanket, greatly preferring a knitted teddy called Rupert, as a constant companion. But Rupert and I snuggled up very well together, always under a blanket and preferable close to the fire. That self same blanket had some magic qualities however. Outside in the garden, with a few suitable props, it became a wigwam or a Sultan’s Palace. It housed whole picnics and travelled around in the back of the car just in case it was ever needed by anyone in transit. It cuddled up to maiden aunts and even served the Vicar his lemon barley water in its stride. It provided shelter when the rains of life came and the heaven’s suitably opened. It kept sick animals at bay when en route to the Vet. It protected the sofa whenever there were parties and brought comfort to overnight guests who stayed the night. Paella lunch boosts church funds

by Jack Troughton MEMBERS OF the Albir Church of England congregation enjoyed a paella lunch helping raise 550€ for the Costa Blanca Anglican Chaplaincy. The meal was held at the ‘finca’ home of church members Hazel and Tony – Tony was ‘paella man’ for the day – and enjoyed by more than 30 people. Everyone took advantage of sitting at tables shaded from the sun and a variety of tapas before the rice dish was served. Puddings were donated and appreciated. The meal, a raffle, and the sale of other items raised the money that allows the Chaplaincy to continue its work along the coast. There are seven churches making up the Chaplaincy along the Costa Blanca and all hold Sunday Holy Communion and many a mid-week communion service. Spain’s best bodies in Torrevieja THE EIGHTH National Bodybuilding and Fitness competition took place over last weekend in Torrevieja. by Keith Nicol HUNDREDS OF people visited the Municipal Theatre during Saturday and Sunday to witness for themselves the physiques of many of the very best bodies in Spain, some also being seen on the world stage. For almost 16 full hours of posing and competition, the Municipal Theatre featured more than more than 630 top athletes from all over Spain including Bilbao, Zaragoza, Badajoz, Leon, Santiago de Compostela, Tenerife, Madrid and Barcelona. Those competing also expressed their satisfaction with the range of facilities on offer at the Theatre, which was hosting the event for the first time. Although many of the competitors had great things to say about the people of Torrevieja, most expressed their regrets at not having had time to explore the city further but were looking forward to the likelihood of returning for next year’s contest. The Deputy of Alicante Tourism Joaquín Albaladejo and Councillor Carmen Gomez attended Saturday’s award ceremony. The full list of results was not available as we went to press but will be forthcoming, as the Torrevieja competition is just one of the many events held throughout Spain. The FCVFF are the organising body and despite being an amateur sport, they have managed to link a large number of private sponsors to offer substantial prizes for champions the respective modalities, further increasing the competitiveness of the Contest, with the standard at this year’s event being higher than ever.

Rugby La Vila news LAST SATURDAY 30th May, our mini rugby group played the last day of the 2014-15 season. From 6pm until10 pm, there were plenty of mini rugby games, with fathers, players, and veterans, all playing touch rugby together. A barbecue for 100 people was organised before the trophy presentations took place. It was a perfect day From mid June our mini rugby squad will start playing beach rugby every Tuesday and Thursday, at 6.00pm, on Villajoyosa beach, near Club Nautic. Next Sunday 7th June at Villajoyosa Stadium, there will be international women’s rugby. At 11am Sudbury Ladies from England, La Vila and Alicante Ladies will play 3 teams sevens. Entry is free and the bar will be open. Villajoyosa Rugby Stadium is located at Carretera El Pantano, Villajoyosa. Just take the motorway AP-7 exit Nº 66 (Villajoyosa). More than 630 competitors took to the stage last weekend in a celebration of the body beautiful

Dave Sackman Memorial Trophy at Javea THIS WEEK Javea Bowls Club held their second annual Competition in memory of long time member, and ex-Captain, Dave Sackman. Twenty four teams competed in a 3:2:1 format that was brilliantly organised by Chris Evans, our recently appointed Competitions Secretary, with a little help from “friends”. The weather was excellent and we were well supported by teams from our neighbours BBC and El Cid. The Final was closely contested by Brenda Martin, Brian Walker and Derek Shaw against Clive Corbin, Chris Evans and Clive English, with the latter team coming out on top. A huge thanks go to Dave’s family, who were represented by Jacquie, for sponsoring this event which is already in next year’s calendar!

Juvenile’s play for National League

ONE OF the very few success stories among Torrevieja’s municipal school football system was with the oldest boys team, the ‘Juvenile A’ team, winning their league. They now have one more game, to be played tomorrow, June 7th at Torrevieja’s Sports City (TBD probably 5pm kick off) against the league’s second team, Celtic Elche. Unfortunately the boys lost their first leg last week and have to overcome a two goal deficit to qualify for the National league, one of the top levels in Spain, which is a fabulous achievement for a non-academy team. Also unfortunately, in their first leg loss, the coach decided to pick mostly players who had served them well during the regular season, although on both occasions

they had failed to beat Celtic Elche this season. This was obviously to give the players some reward and recognition for their service during the season, however with the exception of five of the younger players who will return to play next season, the junior careers of the rest of the squad has now come to an end, so possibly a stronger team, who would actually be playing in the National League should they win by more than two goals on Saturday, will be picked for the game. Everyone is invited to cheer the team on and admittance is absolutely free. The following week, both the Juvenile B (1998 year) and Cadete B (2000 year) teams will take on the mighty La Liga Gitafe youth teams, who are training in Torrevieja during the week. Although

still to be confirmed, probable kick off times will be 10am for the younger team and noon for the Juvenile B side. Getafe produces some of the very best youth teams in Spain, and both teams won their autonomous community leagues and so it’s a perfect opportunity for Torrevieja’s boys to see what their standard is against those looking towards possible futures as professional footballers. Unfortunately, most of Torrevieja’s coaches are not of Academy level, leaving the players to try and improve their game play standards without the best coaching methods. Anyone wishing to see some of the possible stars of the future of Spanish football can see all four teams playing Saturday week at the Sports City.

Heroes can have failings too! By Tony Myles THE HERO that many will remember from this past weekend is surely Matisse the winner of Britain’s Got Talent. Unfortunately it has transpired that the most daring part of his routine was enacted by a stunt double. So even in the canine world there are times when you just can’t hack it.

WHAT HAS THAT GOT TO DO WITH GOLF? Well it coincides with the fact that Rory McIlroy will be penalised for throwing his club away and also missing the cut for the second competition in succession. To make matter worse, this latest loss of form occurred at what is, in effect, his home course. So whilst Matisse could call for a substitute Rory had no such luxury. And quite right too. Inevitably, because Rory has stumbled there will be those who are poised ready to dismiss him as a flop and incapable of replicating the glory of Tiger Woods. Hero worship has an unfortunate piece of baggage that accompanies

it. Many cannot accept that their heroes are less than perfect. Others will see any failure as the end of their hero’s greatness and will insist that they - ‘never rated them anyway’. The fact is that this year Rory has won the Dubai Desert Classic. He was fourth in the Masters. He won his tenth PGA Tour event in San Francisco. Whilst playing the Wells Fargo event in North Carolina he left the rest of field trailing behind him, securing a win seven shots ahead of his nearest competitor. So, just like every golfer, be they amateur or professional, he becomes frustrated with himself when his game is less than perfect and as a result he hurls his club away. Later he apologised saying “It felt good at the time but now I regret it. Frustration got the better of me”. At a more mundane level, the most we can allow ourselves is the occasional verbal explosion, accompanied by smacking the club into the ground. The Yaris Hybrid is a joy because, as long as the driver is light with the right foot and the motor is sufficiently charged, it will automatically crawl along in EV (electric vehicle) mode. If it doesn’t then there is an EV switch, awkwardly placed near the handbrake. Either way, progress is similar to the sound and pace of a milk float. Woe betide the impatient motorist because apply too much pressure on the accelerator and it’ll start guzzling fuel. There’s a similar temptation when other irritated motorists are forced to form an orderly queue behind as the driver nurses the little hybrid on its way. But when the traffic is slow moving it works well. Normal driving results in the engine charging the motor back up in time to be used in another queue. I would be happier if this hybrid technology was coupled to a more efficient diesel engine as it consumes too much petrol for my liking, really only allowing around 350 miles of travel on a

full tank. The tank is 36 litres or 7.9 gallons (compared to 42 litres in a standard Yaris, to make room for the hybrid battery) and during my test it has averaged 44mpg. This makes it much more appropriate for pottering around town rather than motorway munching. It does have an excellent cruise control that can be used at speeds of 26mph and above even with EV mode. It can be set at 30mph and no matter whether travelling downhill or up it will stick rigidly to this speed, which is particularly helpful when a speed camera is present. A unique interior is made all the more so by what appears to be a light turquoise woodchip wallpaper effect on the dashboard and door inserts, which you can see in the video at testdrives.biz. It is actually a fabric but at a quick glance looks very much like wallpaper. Equipped with a good level of features the Yaris Hybrid gets all round electric windows, air conditioning, Sat-Nav and a CD player.
