Each of the girls was challenged to raise a minimum 100€ in sponsorship to win a place on

a gleaming Harley and Jody won her title by collecting the most. However, it is expected a grand total of around 10,000€ will be donated to charity Make A Smile thanks to the cash raised by the Biker Babes. The event is being staged at Albir’s Eucalyptus Park from 9.30am. At 11.30am the

bikes – and the Biker Babe passengers – will set off one a ‘ride out’, taking them through Altea, Albir and along the seafront of Benidorm’s Levante Beach. Around 500 motorbikes are expected to be arriving at the event from across Spain, making it one of the Costa Blanca’s biggest gatherings of mean machines.

La Nucia has British man found dead in English Square a weekend of ﬁres Local news...

LAST WEEKEND saw two reported fires in the municipality of La Nucia.

El Copet and Calle La Lunia were ablaze this weekend

by Jeanette Rice THE FIRST fire occurred in the El Copet area of La Nucia around 11.45 am on Saturday morning. The fire broke out on the Elian’s British School side of the Puig Campana mountain, a similar area to that of the devastating fire of 24th January 2009. Luckily, this time, the hurricane force winds were not present and the fire bombing aircrafts’ hard work paid off within a few hours, but for local residents it still caused some distressing moments as they thought back to the 2009 incident. On Sunday, at 9.45 am, in the town area of La Nucia emergency services received reports of a house fire in Calle La Lunia where a family of six were residing. The parents who are 46 and 48, live in the house with their four children aged 15,10, 8 and 6 years old. The Spanish family were sleeping at the time of the fire until the 15 year old daughter and her father noticed the smoke and moved downstairs to the room where the fire had broken out and attempted to extin-

guish the blaze. Unfortunately they were not able to put the fire out and had to immediately leave the property with the other four members still inside. The remaining family were reported to be on their bedroom balconies calling in desperation for help. Neighbours bravely assisted in the evacuation of the other family members, before the emergency services arrived at the scene, who then treated the family for smoke inhalation. Unfortunately the 15 year old suffered second degree burns and was taken immediately to the General Hospital of Alicante for treatment. The hospital reported that the teenager was out of danger and in a more stable condition. The emergency services took over an hour to extinguish the fire with preliminary reports suggesting that there may have been a short circuit with the electrics on the ground floor although the investigation report will detail the confirmed reasons for the fire.

SATURDAY MORNING police were called to a British man who had been found in the toilets of a venue in the English square. The incident happened at about 6.30 am when the male, in his 30’s, was discovered dead in the area that is popular with many British tourists. Police sources said that there appeared to be no visible signs of an attack and that only when the autopsy had been performed would they know the cause of death. Although SAMU were in attendance there was nothing they could do to help the young man, who was declared dead at the scene.

THE PASSAGE of the Referendum Bill continues through the House of Commons as the battle for all expats to have a voice heats up. by Jack Troughton PRIME MINISTER David Cameron warned this week that members of his government who did not support his stance on European membership would lose their jobs. However, Number 10 later ‘clarified’ the position and said the media had “over interpreted” the PM’s words and colleagues were free to air their view in the ‘in-out’ debate. Boy in suitcase reunited with his mother THE EIGHT year old boy who was found in a suitcase last month has finally been reunited with his mother. RTN readers may remember that we reported last month on the horrific find of the eight year old boy, Adou Ouattara, being smuggled alive in a suitcase from Morocco to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. At the time of the discovery by customs the woman smuggling Adou was arrested and the father, who arrived later, was also arrested. The delay in reuniting Adou with his mother was because the authorities had insisted on DNA testing before they would hand the eight year over into her custody. Maria Antonia Palomo cried with joy when she was reunited with Adou, and according to Ceuta officials had said “it’s a very beautiful day”. The father, who had reportedly tried to bring his son in legally, previous to the smuggling incident, had been told that his income was not sufficient to support his child and his application was refused.

Bank’s “premeditated crime” FINANCIAL EXPERTS have labelled a flawed “absurd” equity release scheme as a fraud designed to fleece innocent and trusting victims.

by Jack Troughton LANDSBANKI LUXEMBOURG – the subsidiary of a now bankrupted Icelandic bank – sold a heavily marketed ‘no risk’ package to around 600 pensioners across Spain, France, Germany, Portugal and Holland. Victims who were ‘asset rich and cash poor’ were able to draw down a percentage of the value of their home – promised the 75% invested by the bank would not only pay the interest but also provide an income. However, when Landsbanki spectacularly crashed in 2008, they found themselves treated as debtors in default by administrators rather than investors. Court actions have been lodged across Europe. On the Costa Blanca, the Costa Del Sol and the Balearic Islands, 180 members of the Landsbanki Action Group commissioned a 7,000€ report that has now been submitted to the Spanish courts as a powerful professional opinion. Written by Professor Prosper Lamothe of the University of Madrid, and Professor Antonio Partal, of the University of Jaen, the report had been made public for the first time – and will be shared with other legal teams. Mike McInnes, spokesman for the action group, said Professor Lamothe was one of Europe’s most respected economic and banking experts “and any court throughout Europe will respect his opinions and conclusions.” He added: “He concludes that the Landsbanki equity release product was a premeditated crime and established in order to defraud the victims knowing full well that the product could never work”. FRUSTRATION Mike said the “wheels of Spanish justice”

continued to turn very slowly “much to the frustration of ourselves and our legal team.” The action group is to make an official complaint to the Spanish Ombudsman in a bid to bring pressure to bear so the prosecution could “finally go ahead after six long years of seeking justice.” The two experts said the equity release was a “complex financial product” and any risk involved was only detectable by a “financial eye” – and victims should have expected the bank to be transparent over risk and subject to proper regulation. The report states the potential yield of Landsbanki investments supplied to victims “was entirely misleading” and were based on three years of substantial growth – and offered a self-financing product at nil cost. However, it noted the bank did not have “a crystal ball” to see the future and it was “impossible” to achieve what was claimed. It says both consultants and the bank drew up contracts knowing victims were putting their investment at risk and “putting at stake” their homes. “In exchange, they obtained profits in the form of commissions and interest for the bank...which collection was guaranteed by collaterals and mainly the real guarantees of the operation.” And it concluded this could only be explained as negligent behaviour by experts. “The approach of such an absurd action means bad faith and a clear intention of misleading the clients.” Anyone wishing for more information about the Landsbanki Action Group can contact Mike on 627 919 000 or email mike.mcinnes47@gmail.com

Pigs have Flown!

HUNDREDS OF piglets escaped from a truck after the vehicle hit a guardrail and overturned on a highway in Ohio. The driver of the truck apparently lost control of the vehicle before colliding with the guardrail on US Route 35 in Xenia Township, near Dayton. Some 2,200 piglets were inside the vehicle at the time of the crash. Xenia Township Fire Chief Dean Fox said “There’s quite a few pigs that got out and ran from the accident. They’re in the woods. I don’t think we’ll ever get all of them, I really, really don’t. We’ll try as hard as we can but we probably won’t retrieve all of them.” The surviving piglets are being cared for at the Greene County Fairgrounds. They were being transported to Indiana from South Carolina when the accident took place.

by Jeanette Rice IN THE Alicante province the meteorology department reported that we have just experienced the warmest May ever. The figures were due mainly to the first half of the month, where several of the days the temperatures exceed 30 degrees, and on May 14th, in six of the areas within the province of Alicante temperatures rose above 40 degrees. Although the second half of the month saw slightly cooler than average figures, the month was also far drier than average. In the south of the Alicante area only 5% of the average rainfall occurred. Orcheta is one of the areas to be extremely affected by the lack of rainfall, with the reservoir almost empty. Bullﬁghter loses testicle after being gored last week SPANISH BULLFIGHTER, Marco Galán, makes a statement that surprises many. by Jeanette Rice DURING A bullfight last week the Spanish bullfighter lost a testicle having been gored by the bull during the Madrid’s Las Ventas bullring event, and then went on to say that he was glad that “no serious damage had been done”. Marco Galán went on to explain to the press that he was making a certain move when the bull caught him in the lower part of his body, but that he had wanted to carry on with the event, and, although he had been in hospital he was glad to be home recuperating with his wife and was keen to get back in the ring. The couple have no children and even now the bullfighter said that the clean goring had not touched anything vital. Since the event animal rights groups have continued to criticise the bullfighter for taking part in such a blood sport, stating that although it was a shame a man had been injured this was a cruel sport within the country which needed to be stopped.

Spain set to get Netflix this Autumn

SPAIN ALONG with Italy and Portugal are set to be able to receive Netflix by October of this year. Netflix, which is a streaming service offering television channels and films, is an American based company that operates in over 50 countries around the world and has over 50 million subscribers. Pricing is not available currently for Spain but when the company expanded last year into Germany, France, Austria, Belgium and Luxembourg the fee was set at €7.99.

by Jeanette Rice THE NEW fleet of motorcycles for Benidorm town local police have, apparently, been riding around the area without insurance. In an unprecedented move the Benidorm authorities have had to recall some of the older motorcycles, most that are in the region of 12 years old, and many of them having mechanical issues to cover for the new fleet that is not currently insured.

Officials have had to make this unusual recall as they frantically expedite the procedures that are required to ensure the new motorcycles are correctly covered for riders and the public. In an embarrassing position the local police need to maintain their patrols whilst ensuring everything is legal but obviously this has severely damaged the image of the law enforcing group.

Tax gets Messi...again SOCCER SUPERSTAR Leo Messi is to face trial in a Spanish court after judges rejected an appeal by his legal team to avoid him facing tax fraud charges. by Jack Troughton The Barcelona player is accused of being part in a 4.1 million Euro fraud and the city’s Provincial High Court has ruled there is evidence the player “benefitted” from a network of companies said to be at the heart of the allegations. The court underlined it was not the time to decide whether Messi was aware of a scam to cheat the taxman – that was a matter for the trial. The ruling was made public on Wednesday and means the player and his father Jorge Messi remain as the focus of a fraud said to involve the tax years 2007, 2008, and 2009.

Messi senior is alleged to have built a network of companies – when his son was still a minor that appeared to control his ‘image rights’ involving lucrative multi-million advertising contracts – allowing the player to reduce his tax burden. Defence lawyers argued the player never devoted a minute of his life to studying the contracts – but the court decided he ratified the agreements when he turned 18 and said his name appeared as sole administrator of one of the companies. It is understood the state prosecutor was prepared to drop the case but the tax agencies in-

sisted the Barcelona hero should be prosecuted. And the judgement stresses that a lack of knowledge of a financial network did not automatically mean impunity if someone gained a benefit from a fraud – even if they played no part in its design or structure.

Continued from front page It works very well for their planning, for their teachers and staff, but not for many parents, who are forced to play higher vacation rates, and huge losses to Spain’s national tourism trade, which in certain areas can lose almost seven weeks of what is a sixteen-week season. In much the vain that is Spain, teachers are taught to teach and not to rationalise, educators in Valencia are proposing that all students, from age three to eighteen return to school on September 3rd, 2015. That date is unlikely to change, so parents should jot it in their diary now. The Ministry of Education has drafted the proposed school calendar for next year 2015-16, which proposes that Infant and Primary classes begin on September 3rd and end on June 17th. In secondary and vocational high school they have also proposed they start on 3rd September but end on June 9th. This is the second consecutive year that at the beginning of the year coincides, Primary, Secondary and Baccalaureate classes begin the first week of September. It was proclaimed as a failure last year by many parents and the tourism business, so it should be exactly the same for this year. With very few schools having air conditioning installed, some schools had to close and send students home, because temperatures inside schools were above 30c and reaching danger levels. The idea of the Ministry is a sound but subjective one. Their idea is that by starting on the same day it will encourage the reconciliation of work and family life, since families can enrol their children from the first days of September. Of course, this only is relevant to families with more than one child and only if one child goes to infant school and the other secondary. Otherwise, it makes no difference at all. And now you know the proposal, following such a plan of action will cost Spain millions of Euros, based on last year’s feedback, from the travel, tourism and hostelry trade. Parents cannot take a late break in September when airfares drop. They are forced to travel in the summer high season. Special sports campuses that before attracted children from all over Spain have had to be cancelled, as Valencian children are back in classes although other communities are still on holiday. Starting so early in September works negatively for many parents and puts additional pressure on parents to organise lunches,

which are not offered at primary level during September, possibly take extra time off, pay for additional cover for when primary age children need supervision, etc, because Primary schools all finish at 1.00pm or earlier during September and June. The hardest hit is the hostelry trade. The much-hated and badly received Wert Law has also changed the timeline for students re-sitting any exams, moving them from September to July. This further impacts possible national tourism as now families cannot plan ahead to go on holiday in case their children have to sit an exam at the end of June. Until the Wert Law took affect, parents could plan months, if not more than a full year ahead, plus students had all summer to prepare themselves for their exams. Now, parents have to wait until

‘notes-marks’ are issued on the last day of term sometimes, before they can plan when they can travel. Once again, this impacts tourism in Spain and forces some parents to pay higher prices as they are unable to book months ahead. With the standards of education in Valencia being some of the lowest in Spain, with a shocking 30% plus failure and repeat rate for High School students, the Education department in Valencia continues to do whatever they wish without consulting parents or taking other factors into consideration, except for arranging the timetable of when their own teachers and staff must return to school, which seems to be the ‘reading between the lines’ objective, rather than doing what is possibly best for Students and their families.

Silly me! YESTERDAY I went to the office to renew my permanent bus pass. I am aware that an appointment is needed but when I got to the office it was empty except for the man who issues passes who was, to all intents and purposes, gazing into space. My bus pass just needed to be put into the computer and updated, so as he had nothing to do, I thought he might have done it there and then. Silly me! He gave me an appointment for 11 25 Tuesday! I explained I would have to travel to get the pass but all he did was shrug. Although I am an O.A.P I did not want preferential service, but, after all, he was just sitting idle. There are a lot of unemployed in Torrevieja who would be pleased to get his job and would probably be somewhat more polite. What a pity our taxes are wasted on people who are paid for sitting idle. No sympathy I was reading the article about driving down the centre of the road and I have to say I have no sympathy with David Winder being fined 200€. In Spain we drive on the right. If there is a lane to drive on use it; it is called lane discipline! In the 60 years I have been driving and after six driving tests, I cannot believe some of the people I see here driving on the left, even on two lane carriageways. I can sympathise with visitors but not residents. Use the right hand lane for your own and especially others’ safety. Graham Haywood, Orihuela Costa

What a difference a few days makes On behalf of the residents who have had to endure living next to and looking into the empty structure at Playa del Cura in Torrevieja, I wish to thank RTN for highlighting this horrendous problem we have had to live with for so many years, A huge word of thanks must also be given to the clean up crew who had the soul destroying task of clearing the tonnes of disgusting, filthy rubbish and human waste from the area. They sure deserve medals the size of paella pans. What a difference a few days has made to the lives of the residents all thanks to you wonderful people. Let’s hope this building is demolished and something created that’s appealing to the eye for tourists and residents of Torrevieja to enjoy. by Jeanette Rice ON FRIDAY the 31 competitors, from around the world, began at 7am with the classification jumps, but after a few had shown off their skills the wind changed leaving the remaining jumpers waiting until the weather was more favourable. Spectators watched from any advantage point they could, with some hotel guests reaching out over their balconies to get the best pictures and others positioning themselves on the sun loungers around the cordoned area, as the jumpers made their leap from the 525 ft platform at the top of the hotel. During Friday evening the crowds were entertained by a BMX display before the competitors retired, having to wait

until the 7am start to find out who had made the semi-finals. On Saturday morning the weather did not disappoint either the competitors or the spectators, and, as the sun rose the Hotel Bali again became a hive of activity whilst final safety checks were made. The Hotel Bali base jump is said to be one of the toughest championships in this field because the competitors have to negotiate obstacles to land in the centre of the circle on the ground, being mindful of the swimming pool near by. The day saw the semi-finals, shortly followed by the finals as well as exhibition jumps before the winners pres-

entation ceremony. It was a bitter sweet day for all the finalists as they remembered all those who had died performing in a sport that they loved, particularly Dario Barrio who had died exactly to the day one year before. In first place was Maurizio di Palma, an Italian with over 3,000 jumps behind him followed by the Spanish competitor Miguel Gomez and completing the podium was Pascal Dupon from France. The presentation ceremony saw the three receive their prizes which included vouchers, clothings, filming equipment and medals specially designed for the event.

Benidorm now has over 20 defibrillators to support the public BENIDORM HAS added to their defibrillator numbers, and as of Tuesday had over 20 located in different areas of the town. by Jeanette Rice TEN OF the devices have been installed in a selection of the municipal buildings, making Benidorm a major contender in Spain for being able to respond quickly should an event arise. The cost of ensuring that all of the devices are maintained and upgraded will be 12,300 euros a year and are run by the company B+ Safe. The company is hoping to offer a further expansion of services within the near future but for now the increase in the ability to rapidly respond to any incidents involving heart rate irregularities is a welcome addition. Some of the defibrillators are located in facilities such as the social centre La Torreta, the football field Antonio Lopez, the Market, Local Police station and the Tourist Office in Torrejo Square. Nationally, in Spain, more than 50,000 heart cases a year are recorded and in a condition where every minute counts the

quick intervention that these new defibrillators will be able to offer should hopefully save many more lives. The Benidorm system is a 24 hour, 365 day a year service so users can speak to a specialist immediately to get specific guidelines of how to help the patient whilst waiting for the emergency services to attend the incident.

Costa TV visits the Benidorm extras on set THIS WEEK the Benidorm extraâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, together with the cast and crew have again been filming at Morgans Tavern, known in the programme as the evening entertainment venue Neptunes Bar. The extras, dressed in fancy dress for one of the scenes, were then joined by a group of passing girls here on holiday and who are fans of the TV programme. It appeared everyone was enjoying dressing up for the day!!

New play area for Finestrat THIS WEEK saw the opening of a new playground for Finestrat town. by Jeanette Rice SITUATED IN the centre of the town the play area was built in recognition of the local doctor Fernando Martinez, who has looked after the residents of the community for the last 40 years. During the opening ceremony a plaque was unveiled with the name of the new doctors office which is now called “Clinic Fernando Martinez”. The new play area offers a space for children to play games and use the play equipment as well as green areas, shaded areas and benches. La Nucia donates toys to local children ON WEDNESDAY morning, La Nucia social services delivered over 500 toys to children from families that are currently suffering financial difficulties. Collections had been made throughout the year by various departments within the council as well as anonymous donations from members of the public or local businesses. The delivery was made to coincide with the forthcoming school holidays, where it was felt that children could benefit from the gifts with all the free time that they are about to have.

Altea receives €25,500 to help with summer activities ALTEA COUNCIL has received from the Department of Social Welfare a grant of € 25,500 to assist with summer activities in the area. 120 children will benefit from the free activities that are scheduled for July and August, with food being included throughout the day. The children participating will be those that are deemed to be in a more vulnerable situation by social, family and/or economic reasons. This means that they will be able to participate in the activities organised by the council of Altea such as the sports campus and summer school without the worry of costs. The summer courses will offer a mixture of physical exercise, social integration, arts and many more beneficial skill. Tapas La Mata by Keith Nicol THE HAMLET of La Mata has organised their own, quaint, La Mata Tapa Route, that takes place over the next two weekends. On Tuesday, Torrevieja’s acting Councillor for Tourism, Luis Maria Pizana, along with local innkeepers of La Mata, Tomas Arenas and David Lacal, presented details and the new poster, for the third edition of “Tapas in La Mata”. The edition features the participation of 25 bars and restaurants and will be held from Thursday, June 11th until Sunday, June 14th and again from next Thursday 18th to Sunday 21st June, from 12 noon to 4:30pm and 7:30pm to 11pm. Each establishment will offer a tapa and a drink for 2€. Luis Maria Pizana announced that, as a novelty in this edition, the hoteliers of La Mata who participate in this third edition, have a special offer, and for just 4€, one

can have a tapa with a gin and tonic from selected brands. The Councillor for Tourism said that this initiative has been very successful since its inception, and that its continuation is intended to further promote the local cuisine and catering establishments of La Mata. A total of 5,000 brochures are available, with a map of the location of all the establishments, which have been distributed to local participants and the tourist information offices of Torrevieja. Those participating also have the chance to win prizes as a ballot is included, and all you have to do is to choose a favourite tapa and have it stamped

during the weekend by the participating establishments. By Keith Nicol SUMMER IS just around the corner and it’s the time of year when many expats head back to the UK, usually because they say it’s too hot or just to visit family and friends. Some of those leaving are regular volunteers and helpers with many different NGOs and charities. One of those hardest hit is APAH, who need a few extra volunteers to help them manage caring for their rescue dogs during the Summer exodus. Yvonne, the President of APAH has been notified that many of their kennel volunteers will not be around in July or August and said; “This makes looking after our dogs very difficult and puts an awful strain on the few people that will still be here during the summer. We desperately need extra pairs of hands to help with the cleaning and feeding of the APAH dogs throughout July and August.” Anyone willing to help out can contact Yvonne on 630 422 563 and arrange to go along to the APAH kennels, meet all of APAH’s lovely dogs and find out what’s involved with being a kennel volunteer. La Nucia 10k and 5k run this weekend TOMORROW, SATURDAY, La Nucia will see around 400 athletes taking part in the fifth edition of the 10k and 5k run through the town and surrounding area. by Jeanette Rice STARTING AT 7.30 pm the runners will start from the car park of the Ciutat Esportiva Camilo Cano and will also finish at the same place. Runners can opt for either of the races which are being organised in conjunction with shorter distance races for children. ‘Unbeelievable’: Flybe flight grounded by instrument-tampering bee

FLYBE, A low-cost British airline, confirmed a plane from Southampton, England, to Dublin had to turn back for a technical issue that turned out to be a bee lodged in an instrument. A spokeswoman said the plane turned around shortly after take-off to address a suspected technical issue. The plane landed without incident and engineers discovered the cause of the issue. “Flybe engineers discovered that a bee had become lodged in an item of instrumentation on the outside of the aircraft,” she said. Noel Rooney, a passenger on the plane, tweeted the incident was “unbeelievable.” He later joked about the incident while boarding his flight for the return journey. “About to go to airport to board @flybe to Southampton. I’ve brought a bee in a jar as what would the odds be of two bees in a plane,” he tweeted.

British woman skydives for horse rescue centre by Patricia Thompson

A 60-YEAR-OLD British woman has raised more than 500€ for the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre by jumping from a plane in the UK. Elaine Sissons, who has a holiday home in Spain, is a long-time supporter of the Rojalesbased horse rescue centre and a volunteer at the centre’s La Zenia charity shop. Mrs Sissons said a parachute jump had long been on her “bucket list” and she decided to finally bite the bullet to celebrate her 60th birthday in April. Rescue centre co-founder Sue Weeding expressed heartfelt thanks to Mrs Sissons for dedicating her jump to helping abused and neglected horses in Spain. The jump raised 571€, saying “It’s lovely that British residents who have holiday homes here in Spain support us by volunteering at our shops and by fundraising.” The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre welcomes donations and sponsorship to help support their important work. Every cent donated or spent in the charity shops goes towards the feeding and care of the more than 80 horses, ponies and donkeys at the centre. The charity shops are located in La Zenia, Los Montesinos, La Siesta, Ciudad Quesada, Guardamar, La Marina, Pilar de Horadada and Gran Alacant. Donations of furniture, clothes and bric-a-brac to stock the shops are gratefully welcomed. Large

items such as furniture can be collected from your house and each shop also offers a delivery service for large items. EHCRC is seeking volunteers to staff its shops for a few hours or days each week. Can a lawyer refuse to return documents or Court documents to a client, if the client does not pay the legal fees? QUESTION: DEAR Solicitor, A few years ago I started a court case against a developer regarding a property purchase in Spain. I have asked my former lawyer to give me back the documents I gave her concerning the purchase agreement, etc., and the court order, and she answered that as I still owe her part of her legal fees, she does not have any obligation to give me any documentation, or information. Dear reader, thank you for your enquiry. I am surprised by what you have said, as a lawyer cannot legally withhold information or documentation from a client under any circumstances. I understand that if you agreed a fee with your lawyer, you must pay the agreed fees. But having said that, no lawyer could or should oppose returning the documentation to a client, or provide them with a copy of court resolutions of legal proceedings, or any other kind of documentation, under the pretext of not having been paid the legal fees.

The Spanish Lawyers Code of Ethics (Codigo Deontologico), says thus in its article 13 paragraph 12: “12. The documentation received from the client will always be available to him, a lawyer cannot retain it in any case, even under pretext of existing outstanding fees. However copies of the documentation could be kept. “ Furthermore, the Spanish Supreme Court, in a Court Decision, indicated that lawyers have a duty to “custody of all documents, records, transfers and actions arising from the contractual relationship and professional performance and also with greater intensity at the time of the extinction (of the professional relationship), delivering all the

documentation to the client “ The refusal to return documents to a client, for the reason of not having been paid the legal fees, could even be understood as coercion or duress, with the serious consequences that this could mean. Therefore, there are two separate obligations, on the one hand the lawyer must return your documents and deliver the court documents relative to her performance, including the Court Decision of the case, and secondly, you have the obligation to pay the agreed fees, but the fulfillment of the lawyer’s obligation cannot be conditioned to the fulfilment of yours. Private Equity: beginner’s guide

WHAT IS A PRIVATE EQUITY FUND? Private equity can be described as an asset class of generally holding units or shares of companies that are not listed on stock exchanges. The investment into such Companies can be risky and the Private Equity firms (also know as venture capitalists) that invest in theses companies will normally not only invest cash, but will work with or replace the management team in the company in question, nurturing expansion and new product development with, perhaps, a restructuring, all of which will hopefully increase profitability. Normally there is an investment exit plan within a time frame, such as 7 years. The private Equity firm will look for investment opportunities such as distressed companies or chains at a bargain purchase price and turn these companies around in the aforementioned way. Not so many years ago I was in charge of the administration and accounting teams of a large Private Equity Firm which happens to be a household name and frankly, the success of this style of investment was astounding. To give you an example of the type of business that a Private Equity business may pursue; the purchase of a large share of Formula 1 was made by CVC, administered by my colleagues, as was the purchase of Debenhams. Other such plans were to work with an international mobile provider in supplying

a working network to the island of Madagascar and purchase a chain of restaurants in France. YOU CAN HAVE A SLICE OF THE ACTION. Normally you would need to have large quantities of cash to be asked to invest in such schemes (USD150,000+), however, one of our product providers has an in-house fund that allows access to this type of investment. This means that li’l ol’ me and you can have a slice of the action for a very minor amount as part of your overall portfolio. You may want to call it a “bit of spice”. If Private Equity is not for you, however, (which we would assess) then you will be pleased to know our most cautious of clients are earning at least around the 5% mark in a tax efficient way with a capital guarantee of the investment amount. Living well from our Mediterranean garden

EVER SINCE I and my wife started gardening in our parents and school gardens in the 1940’s and 1950’s respectively the inclusion of things to eat has been an important element of our plant mixes. This led us to enjoy holistic gardens with an element of cottage garden style and with a series of patio gardens around the house including ones focussed on the production of fruit, vegetables, herbs, edible flowers and tree leave, plus eggs and poultry meat. Moving to Spain to retire early allowed me to seek to repeat the edible garden my parents had in West London in order to eat well during the second world war. My efforts in Spain have been driven by the recommendation of my cancer surgeon back in 1993 that I retire early to Spain to an active open air low stress life eating a traditional village Mediterranean diet rather than undergo radio and chemical treatments for a persistent slow growing cancer. For me it worked and recent reports on the latest medical thinking, in recent editions of the magazine ‘What Doctors Don’t Tell You’, demonstrate how forward thinking the surgeon was. A few years ago I gave a talk at a U3A conference at the Javea Parador on health for the third age illustrating the eco edible content of our garden was expanded in parallel with local agriculturalists using heavier and heavier doses of chemical fertilisers insecticides and fungicides and then eventually abandoning most of the local agricultural terraces and fields. Eventually we took on borrowed land to expand our eco vegetable and fruit production for ourselves friends and a local Michelin starred restaurant and make our own

eco olive oil. Now the external production has been cut back to give me more time for writing and painting. After the conference I expanded this into a booklet for people attending our talks and a few years later this was updated and published as a book titled ‘ Living well from our garden – Mediterranean style’ . This was later published for sale Amazon Books UK and Spain etc., to meet an increasing interest in ideas on wellness gardens, what constitutes good and poor eating and what to grow most of based on the wellness benefits of their vitamin mineral and fibre content etc. The rather bland initial book cover has been recently changed as below to highlight the family benefits of good eating from one’s garden, garden and apartment terraces, raised beds, containers etc.. Last week I prepared a tapas and paella lunch with a group of friends who have been involved in restaurant and wine businesses. The majority of the ingredients for both were ecological and from the garden, including most of the thirty ingredients required for producing a quality authentic Valencian paella. Something unfortunately rarely found in tourist restaurants these days as short cuts on ingredients and the method of cooking them have been introduced to survive the economic crisis. If you are interested in the history, ingredients required, method of cooking a fully fledged paella for festive occasions and understanding the other rice dishes eaten by Spanish families on a day to day basis my 25 years of observations and personal practice are now published as a booklet ‘ Your

by Keith Nicol CLASSIC AND Custom car fans know when they can’t get enough of a good thing and over the next four weeks they are spoilt for choice. Last Sunday an excellent turn out of around 100 cars graced the Ace Café event in Los Montesinos, as a taster of what else is to come during June. On Sunday there are actually two classic car events, the VII Concentration of Classic Cars in Novelda plus the First Custom and Classic Car Show in Pinar De Campoverde. On Sunday the Pilar de la Horadada Town Hall is collaborating with Torrevieja’s Mod Cruiserz to stage the first such event in the town. Starting at around 10am, cars and activities will be on display until about 4pm. A Bouncy castle will be there for the kids

along with a stall for The Adhoc Players, the non-profit theatre group, which gives their earnings from shows to local charities along with other stalls. Anyone with a classic, custom or special car is invited to attend. On display will be a selection of classic cars, American muscle cars, tuned cars, sport cars, hot rods and motorbikes, to name but a few. The event takes place on the only square of Pinar de Campoverde, beside the main road, next to all the bars and restaurants who will be offering their special deals of the day. And that brings us back to the first Sunday in July when cars and drivers will return to Los Montesinos for the Ace Café meeting, that takes place from about 10am until 1pm. By Jack Troughton THE AKIRA charity shop in Moraira has moved premises and an official opening ‘fiesta’ takes place from 11am until 1pm on Friday 19th June. The new look and larger shop is at 19, Avenida Del Portet – just door away from the previous home – and is packed with goodies. An open invitation is offered to enjoy a glass of cava and nibbles to celebrate the new venture. The shop raises money to fund the construction of the AKIRA shelter on La Pedrera Industrial Estate, Benissa, where building has just begun (pictured) but more financial help is need to complete the work.

By Jack Troughton AN INTERNATIONAL charity ‘solidarity’ day is being held at the beautiful Jardi de l’Albarda in La Sella – near La Xara – on Sunday 14th June from 12.30pm. Organised by Business Network International, 20 Spanish businesses are hosting a celebration which merges the commercial sector with both British and Spanish charities. HELP of Denia and the Marina Alta is one of the international charities attending the function – an entrance fee of 2€ gains access to the gardens and the event. Lunch is on offer at 10€ for salad, paella and a sweet – drinks are extra – being served from 1.30pm. And entertainment includes a bouncy castle for the kids, an auction, and a raffle with prizes donated by BNI members, including tickets to the Balearic Islands donated by ferry company Balearia. Funds raised by the event will benefit all the charities involved, including HELP.

Walking for Life LAST SUNDAY, June 7th, Playa Flamenca was looking fabulous in Pink as hundreds of people gathered on the promenade for the annual Walk For Life. by Jack Troughton Although just out of hospital herself, Maria led the way around the 5K route, pushed in a wheelchair by husband Carl, and more than 500 walkers followed, many of them sponsored by friends and family. The walkers were sent off and welcomed back by The Torrevieja Pipes and Drums. A full day’s entertainment programme followed their return to the beachfront. Sunshine Radio hosted the programme throughout the day. Simon Morton and Stevie Spit performed and also introduced a glittering array of stars who all donated their performances

to Maria and The Pink Ladies AECC charity. Those who performed were The Karisma Choir, Rob Bonovox, Samantha Curtis, David John, Suzy G, Dan Davy, Dee, Richie Alexander, Benny Boy, Kylie Burgazzi, and Texas Ted. Maria was taken by surprise and visibly moved when Stevie Spit led five other stars, The Pink Ladies, and Pink Panthers, in a tribute song, “Run For Life”, dedicated to her and in gratitude for the leadership of the charity, and for the inspirational example she has set despite her own struggle with the disease. The performance was highly

emotional for all and it is planned to publish a recording to be sold for the benefit of the AECC. Maria expressed her thanks to all the people who supported The Walk For Life; all the bars restaurants and businesses, her Pink Ladies and Panthers, and all the performers who gave their time so generously. Unlike last year’s rainy event, the sun shone all day and it is hoped that when all donations and sponsorships are gathered in, the total contribution to the fight against cancer will set another record for Maria and The Pink Ladies.

I am a 15 year old boy, and I have terrible spots on my face. It is so embarrassing, and I feel everyone is looking at them. My Dad just says it’s my age, and he had spots too. You don’t have to suffer. If you have not done so already, go and see your family doctor. There are lots of good treatments that he / she can give you for Acne. Also, cutting down on junk food will help. Not many teenagers like to eat fruit and vegetables, but try and find a fruit you like, and eat lots of it. Also drink water instead of fizzy, sugary drinks. Your Dad is right, it is a phase, and you WILL grow out of it. In the meantime try not to pick at your face, as this makes it worse. A lot of spots are caused by bacteria from the hands, and constant picking.

Nothing to help My Dad is suffering from Alzheimer’s. I am caring for him at his home, along with my Mum. It is very hard. My sisters do very little. My one sister and I clash about this constantly. There is nothing she says to me that isn’t a criticism, while she is lacking in any kind of help. All we do is scream at each other when we meet. She seems to enjoy pushing my buttons, and undoing rota arrangements because, she has better things to do. If your sister is doing very little to help, then I would suggest excluding her from any arrangements. Try not speaking to her directly, when she visits, and talk generally. If she is ‘pushing your buttons’, maybe it is because you are allowing her to, and you are giving her the reaction that she is looking for. Be clever about how you handle her, and you can deflate the situation, but you must stand firm, and not react to anything she says.

Possessives – questions: Word Order WE HAVE now spent two weeks on the subject of “possessives” but we are still missing one thing which is how to ask the question “Whose is this?” or “Whose are these?” Before we start on the Spanish I’m afraid I can’t resist putting my English teacher’s hat on for a second and pointing out the correct spelling of “whose”. It is very common these days to see it spelt “who’s”, which is only the abbreviation for “who is”. In Spanish “whose” is “de quién” (literally “of whom”). “Whose is this?” would be “¿De quién es esto?” whilst “Whose are these?” is “¿De quién son estos?” “Whose is this pen?” “¿De quién es este boli?” and so on. The answer would then be, for example: “Es mío” (It’s mine) or perhaps “Es de Pablo” (It’s Pablo’s) and so on. This question form “de quién” leads to a general observation about question words, that is the usual “who, what, where, when” equivalents, and their combined forms in Spanish. When a word such as “of” “with” “at” “to” forms part of the question, the Spanish equivalent of these words goes at the beginning of the sentence, in front of the question word. Another familiar example of what I mean is the question “What time?” which is Spanish is “¿A qué hora? (that is, “At what time?”) Although it sounds a little stilted, we can translate these directly into English (“Of whom …, “At what time …) and make some sense of them, even though nowadays we allow for a different word order in English. This is why when we translate the correct Spanish word order directly into English it sounds very old-fashioned and pedantic, even though in Spanish it is the normal way of asking a whole

The student here has simply written the sentence in the exact order the words come to mind in English. One final little thing to notice is that in the case of “adónde” the two words join together. This is in fact the equivalent of our very old-fashioned word “whither” but even I don’t speak like that any more!

Windows 10 upgrade Dear Aunty, I have just reserved my “free” upgrade from Windows 7 to 10. Is there anything I should be doing ahead of the change? Microsoft say that the only incompatibility I have is Chrome Delta. However, I run Open Office rather than Windows Office for instance. Any information would be gratefully received. Laughing gear THE ONE talent needed to work more intently with Spirit is the biggest sense of humour that you can muster. In a career that has been a rollercoaster I can say that I have laughed my way through whatever I could. The way that Spirit works is funny enough, especially when you look back and see things their way. How the Spirit World must laugh at experiences that they have all both endured and enjoyed. They say that one man’s meat is another man’s poison, and here Spirit allows us, each and all, to have our plusses and our minuses. There is no better therapy than to laugh. Even the serious issues of life are bolstered by humour and seeing the funny side of things. As tears change into smiles and laughter something very magical happens. We are often able to laugh at situations that brought us to crisis, with a smile that says that we have survived, we have learned, and that life goes on. The years of the second World War were tough, and people needed to laugh their way through it. You could wake up to find your neighbour’s house demolished and the whole family dead beneath it. Hard to smile? Well yes, but life had to go on and the continuity of loving care for fellow men meant that those who survived had to fight and not give in. In these peaceful days of crisis we are surrounded with problems too. Laughter won’t pay the bills but what is the point in being miserable? I have had to go on stage many times only to encounter a difficult audience. Since in my shows the audience are the most important feature of that show, I know that they are focussing on loved ones in Spirit. I understand that, but all Spiritual people know that death is the great beginning

and not the end of life. This should make connections through me very happy ones! I am giving out the evidence of survival which should get the happiest reaction of all. The odd joke, in context, breaks the ice with the audience, relaxes them; and the departed in Spirit are buzzing too. Spirit does not like a sad atmosphere. I have had many wonderful shows in bars and clubs and theatres. I have conducted a few funerals in my time too, and have to admit that if I was chosen to celebrate a wonderful life of the deceased they will want me to be my cheerfully happy self. There will have been laughter and tears, sorrow and excitement, love and care throughout any life, so why change things? I am sympathetic, yes of course, but why cry when you can laugh! Giving a Eulogy I always try to tell a happy story about any deceased person because they want to be remembered as being happy and smiling, at a time when back then the lottery that is life had not yet called their number. The late and great Joan Rivers was criticised for going on stage the night after the death of her husband, Edgar. She did jokes about the death and made the audience laugh, but she was knocked for it. Her response, ever feisty, was to remind everybody that she was a comedienne and that telling jokes was what she did. Also, too, she was making light of her own personal bereavement making people laugh; and they always did that, for her! Life is difficult enough sometimes, and a smile can be the hardest thing. Time and time again it is smiles of loved ones across the great divide of Death that I am so happy to encounter and to subsequently pass on. Loved ones in Spirit clearly love us for who we are, and their reciprocal smiles are often all that is needed to prove their happiness and ability to carry that smile right over to the Other Side!

Hablamos espanol! GRADUATING WITH honours, 26 members of U3A Marina Baixa enjoyed a traditional tapas lunch to celebrate the end of their Spanish language course. by Jack Troughton They were presented with Achievement Certificates at the Casa de Cultura in Alfaz Del Pi by U3A President Elaine Mitchell, while the group leader Joan Flint received surprise gifts from her ‘students’. The members taking the course are all retired and have an average age of 70. They have been studying since last September and have made outstanding progress in their desire to master Spanish. And many have already signed up to continue with their studies this September and also to keep enjoying the social side of the group. Classes resume on Wednesday 14th September. U3A Marina Baixa holds its general meetings on the fourth Monday of the month – for June only the venue is Albir Playa Hotel on Monday 22nd June. Doors open at 10am and the desks close at 10.50am to allow a prompt 11am start. Anyone wishing to join the association will be given a warm welcome. Hughes Syndrome THE CORRECT medical term for Hughes Syndrome is Antiphospholipid Syndrome (APS). It is a disorder of the immune system which results in an increased risk of blood clots. In APS, the immune system produces abnormal antibodies called antiphospholipid antibodies that target proteins attached to fat molecules called phospholipids, which makes the blood more likely to clot.

What causes APS? APS is an autoimmune condition. This means the immune system, which usually protects the body from infection and illness, attacks healthy tissue by mistake. It is not known what causes the immune system to produce abnormal antibodies, but like other autoimmune conditions, genetic, hormonal and environmental factors are thought to play a part.

These reduce the likelihood of blood clots forming when they are not needed but still allow clots to form when a person cuts themselves. If a person develops a blood clot or symptoms suddenly become severe, injections of an anticoagulant called Heparin may be needed. Initial management will be in hospital though the patient will then be trained to inject themselves.

Who is affected? APS can affect people of all ages, including children and babies. However, it usually affects adults aged 20â&#x20AC;&#x201C;50, and affects three to five times as many women as men.

Management in Pregnancy: For pregnant women, it is estimated that correct treatment will give them about an 80% chance of having a successful pregnancy. Women who are diagnosed with APS are strongly advised to plan for any pregnancies. This is because treatment to improve the outcome of a pregnancy is most successful when it begins as soon as possible after conception. Also some medications used to treat APS (such as Warfarin) carries a small risk of birth defects. Preferred treatment during pregnancy involves taking daily doses of aspirin or heparin, or a combination of both, depending on whether there is a history of blood clots and previous complications during pregnancy. Treatment is usually started at the beginning of the pregnancy and may continue for one to six weeks after the birth.

How do you know if you have APS? As well having a history of conditions caused by blood clots, such as strokes and deep vein thrombosis, people with APS may complain of: balance and mobility problems vision problems, such as double vision speech and memory problems a tingling sensation or pins and needles in the arms or legs fatigue (extreme tiredness) repeated headaches or migraines

Possible side effects of anti-coagulant medication: Side effects are uncommon and generally mild, such as indigestion or nausea. However, there is a risk of excessive bleeding (a haemorrhage). Symptoms of excessive bleeding can include: Blood in urine or faeces Severe bruising Prolonged nosebleeds (lasting longer than 10 minutes) Vomiting blood Coughing up blood

Anybody experiencing any of these symptoms should see their family doctor for further investigation. Diagnosis on symptoms only can be difficult therefore a specific blood test which is designed to help identify the antibodies responsible for APS is essential in diagnosing the condition.

All people taking anticoagulants will be closely monitored but if any of the above symptoms occur, the patient should seek medical attention without delay.

Risks for sufferers: It is estimated that APS is responsible for one in every six cases of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), strokes and heart attacks in people under 50. Pregnant woman with APS have been shown to have an increased risk of miscarriage, APS being responsible for one in every six cases of recurrent (three or more) miscarriages. The exact cause for this remains unknown.

Life style changes: When a person is diagnosed with APS it is important to take all possible steps to educe the risk of developing blood clots including: not smoking eating a healthy, balanced diet that is low in fat and sugar and contains plenty of fruit and vegetables taking regular exercise maintaining a healthy weight and losing weight if obese (have a body mass index of 30 or more)

Management: Although there is currently no cure for APS, if it is correctly diagnosed, the risk of developing blood clots can

extensive treatment. Complications of APS: Less than 1% of people with APS will develop Catastrophic Antiphospholipid Syndrome (CAPS). Although CAPS is very rare, it is a serious complication. It is not clear what causes this but one case in five occurs after an infection, trauma or surgery. Symptoms may include: loss of blood supply to the tips of the fingers or toes, causing them to go dark blue or black swollen ankles, feet or hands increasing breathlessness abdominal pain blood in the urine confusion seizures coma Symptoms are usually sudden and rapidly get worse. Immediate medical attention is vital. The patient will be admitted into an intensive care unit so that the bodyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s functions can be supported. High-dose anticoagulants are used to stop the blood clots getting bigger while they are slowly absorbed by the body. However, even with the best available treatment the outlook for catastrophic APS is poor, with an estimated 50% of people dying as a result of the condition.

Rugby La Vila News LAST SUNDAY 7th June, our women’s team had a 15 a side game against Chipping Sudbury Ladies from England. It was a fantastic day, not only for the rugby, which was unexpectedly won by La Vila, but for the after match celebrations which included a fancy dress party. Next Saturday 27th June, at 8.30 pm at our stadium, we will have an evening game under floodlights against Torquay RFC Under 18s from England. Entrance is free and the bar will be open! We have started our summer beach rugby season. Every Tuesday and Thursday, from 6.30 pm until 8.30 pm at Villajoyosa main beach, near Club Náutico, all are welcome to play touch beach rugby (no tackles). We are open to all ages! Pego Golf Society “Javea Cup” Competition ON TUESDAY at Oliva Nova Golf Course, Pego Golf Society held the Javea Cop competition. There were 51 entries for this Pairs Two Ball Medal competition, with best ball counting at each hole. The weather was great, maybe a little too great with temperatures touching 34 degrees, but with no wind, and Oliva Nova getting back to its best, scoring was just incredible. There were three guests, Derek Lindley, Terry Oram and Brian O’Connor who won the guest prize. Our Captain Brendan Young actually won the Javea Cup with his companion Paul Trigwell. The results were: 1st place were Brendan Young and Paul Trigwell with net 62, 2nd, Mike Cuerden and Mervyn Joseph with net 63, followed by Steve Patton and Roger Miller in 3rd place with net 64 and Colin Foster and Alan Simpson 4th with a net 66. Congratulations to all the winners. There were only two 2’s, by Martin Gates and Andrew Harrison, and in the “Balls in the Water” there were 129 balls in the water, won by last year’s captain Danny Herron. “Nearest The Pin” at Hole No 5 was Andrew Harrison with 1.28 meters, and at Hole No 16, the nearest tee shot was by Terry Oram at 2.50 meters. Andrew Harrison also won the hole 5 competition last week with 2.02 meters, so well done that man. Busy week at Javea! WHAT A week at Javea Bowls Club. On Monday Javea played Benitachell in the annual match for the Jubilee Trophy and Javea were able to retain the trophy with a sixteen points to twelve points victory. This Competition has been going since 2002 and both clubs have now won on seven occasions, so next year will have extra spice attached to it! Then, on Saturday, two of our teams entered the inaugural Bonalba Triples competition with Gail Chick and Greg Sperring coming third, just being pipped on shot difference for second place by Alan Phillips, Pat and John Pittaway. Congratulations to Bonalba on a super tournament. To end the week a Horse Race Meeting was held on the Green, with 70 people enjoying the fun. Six wooden horses on wheels, with jockeys, are each attached to a piece of string that has to be rolled in on a dowel over a course of 15 metres. Each race has six horses and the person doing it the quickest, wins the race. The best performing “jockey” was Roy Webb who won the final race which was the “Javea Gold Cup”. Canapes and a BBQ followed by strawberries and cream were enjoyed in the enclosure. It was great fun! Thanks to the team of organisers for their efforts.

Peugeot RCZ GT

IT HAS become apparent that sports cars are a young person’s game. I DRAW this conclusion after my time with the magnificent Peugeot RCZ GT, the iconic roadster with the bubble roof. When I first sit in it I find myself quite taken a back. I feel out of my comfort zone. Is it middle age creeping in? Have I become too comfortable in a middle of the road hatchback? There’s a car behind and I try and find the bite of the clutch and it is far higher than I am used too, which results in the car rolling a little too near for my liking. But I find it eventually and all is well. The handbrake is quite high up too and it’s going to take me a while to become accustomed to the height of that steering wheel. I first drove the Peugeot RCZ in 2010 when it launched. Being back behind the wheel of this facelifted version is like being reunited with a long lost friend.

After all it’s a stunning sportscar and one that makes a significant birthday treat for my wife. The 1.6-litre 200bhp engine can be quick if required. The low ride height and the hard suspension all combine to make it feel like you’re travelling even faster. Even just a quick glance at the wing mirror is a joy for the driver who cannot help but noticing the bulging rear haunches of this beast. Although it does have rear seats these are almost completely impractical. I know. Against my better judgement I install my daughters’ car seats in the rear and find that the front seats have to be pushed so far forward that my knees are pushed up against my chin. I’m not that tall either. I am no designer but I am surprised at the capacity of the boot compared to the size of the interior as you can see in the video at www.testdrives.biz. We leave our daughters with their grandparents for the weekend and we’re able to really the RCZ through its paces over my wife’s birthday weekend by taking it on a trip to Bath. As a two-seater there is ample room for driver and passenger and there are all the luxuries you would expect from electric and heated seats to electric windows, air conditioning and cruise control and limiter. This is not a vehicle where you watch the economy, it is a car for driving pleasure. And with its notchy sixspeed manual gearbox it is

a delight. When it is revved at a certain point there is a raspy note to the exhaust that makes you want to put your foot down continually. It is a more than capable over taker and this machine certainly puts the joy back into motoring. Dual carriageways allow the driver to really open her up and she is certainly responsive. After a few hours with the RCZ I can report that the driving position is just right but I would still prefer the steering wheel to be lower and I cannot work out how to adjust it. This results in my hand mistakenly sliding onto the horn on a couple of occasions and embarrassingly tooting the car in front. Sticking at the ‘ten-to-two’ position avoids this problem. Arriving on Bath’s cobbled streets judders the back a bit but it’s a good massage and we find a tight parking space in the Royal Crescent. Annoyingly the RCZ does not fit in perfectly on the first attempt but it gets in. The housekeeper at No. 1 Royal Crescent is watching and as I get out to ask about parking charges, she says: “Two other drivers have tried to get in there and they couldn’t so I am very impressed you managed it in that car.” The rounded design of the vehicle certainly helps when reversing but it is a bit tricky to gauge quite how much space there is at the front.
