Police raid Benidorm bar TWO BRITISH girls were arrested at the weekend in Benidorm by local police officers for selling Nitrous Oxide gas.

Police removed hundreds of capsules containing the gas

by Jeanette Rice IN THE early hours of Sunday morning, whilst the British strip of Benidorm was full of holidaymakers, local police raided one of the venues and arrested two British girls aged 20 and 24 for selling Nitrous Oxide gas to the party goers. The young girls are said to have been selling the gas for five euros a go, provided in balloons filled from a siphon. Police removed hundreds of capsules containing the gas along with balloons, dispensing bottles and 200 euros in cash. Investigations are still ongoing as to if this was an isolated incident or part of a larger group. Nitrous Oxide, also known as laughing gas, is severely dangerous and can

cause dizziness together with affecting a persons judgement, there are reports of people putting themselves into dangerous situations having inhaled the gas. More serious side affects can be a severe vitamin B deficiency causing serious nerve damage and when mixed with alcohol the risks increase to a much higher level. Nitrous Oxide when inhaled can starve the body of oxygen and has been known to be fatal. Whilst many in the medical profession use the gas, such as a dentist using it to relax a patient, this is within a controlled environment where the person administering the gas has been trained on its correct use.

Villajoyosa increases police on the beach

THE TOWN of Villajoyosa has added four new police officers to their team for the summer months. Following their neighbours in Benidorm, Villajoyosa has increased its police force for the summer with four new members who will be primarily patrolling the beaches. The additional officers will be employed initially for the rest of July, August and September to help the existing force cope with the extra demands that the summer months bring. Andreu VerdĂş, mayor for Villajoyosa, and Jaime Ramis, councillor for Citizen Security, welcomed the four new members emphasising that they will be offering a specific beach police service. In previous years this responsibility had fallen to the existing police in the town, stretching their abilities to provide an all areas service. With the new officers beach goers will be able to see a more prominent presence.

Spain fined 18.93 million euros

ON MONDAY Brussels fined Spain 18.93 million euros for manipulating data since 1988.

by Jeanette Rice THE EUROPEAN Council imposed the fine after it was found that deficit data provided by the Communidad Valencia had been systematically adjusted since 1988, although the misreporting stopped in 2012. The Valencian Regional Audit Office failed to record health expenditure and various other accounts, causing the incorrect information being recorded and given to Eurostat, the European Unions statistical office. The investigation found that the figures had been misreported for 24 years, and although a much larger fine could have been imposed the Commission felt that it was isolated to the Autonomous Community of Valencia, as opposed to the whole of Spain. Ana Genover, from the Eurostat statistical office stated that this was the first time a fine had been imposed for data manipulation under regulation 1173/2011. Adopted in 2011, the regulation was established to strengthen European fiscal surveillance, and had the maximum penalty been imposed it could have been â&#x201A;Ź2.000 million (0.2% of Spainâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s GDP). It was made clear by the Commission that the Spanish government had fully cooperated once the anomalies were discovered, but the Commission also emphasised how vital it was that the figures for a government deficit and debt should be correct, as they are essential to economic policy coordination at the European Union level. The Commission reported, that whilst this incorrect data had no significant impact on the overall functioning of economic operations within the Union, the results of the misrepresentation could have affected financial planning and because of the negligence it was necessary to impose the fine.

Greek tragedy THE GREEK debt crisis stumbles on with the country’s third bailout package still a difficult pill to swallow on home turf. by Jack Troughton THE CONTROVERSIAL deal has already been attacked by the International Monetary Fund – the IMF is a major creditor – and the European Union members who are not part of the ailing Eurozone. And Greek Premier Alexis Tsipras is unhappy with the terms of the rescue while his own MPs – who must agree the deal – are viewing the rescue package with growing distaste. To get the 86 billion Euro bailout and avoid a humiliating exit from the Eurozone – a ‘Grexit’ – Greece must agree to painful measures including tax and pension reform and selling off state assets. Mr Tsipras admitted on national television he did not believe in the terms of the rescue but was willing to accept the deal to “avoid disaster for the country” and collapse of the banks. Members of his own party were expected to rebel in a vote on the package in Greece, while a coalition party the Independent Greeks have only shown limited support for the Eurozone lifeline. PROTEST Unions and trade associations in Greece are expected to strike and stage protests as the deal is put to the country’s parliament. There is also an ongoing cash crisis. Banks have been shut since the end of June and Mr Tsipras has warned they are unlikely to open their doors until any deal is ratified – this could take another month. The bailout would come from the European Financial Stability Mechanism (EFSM) and the IMF and would include a bridging loan of up to 12 billion Euros to help pay existing debt interest. Greece has already missed two deadlines to pay the IMF 1.6 billion Euros in debt interest; the first major Western economy ever to default on a loan agreement. The IMF has condemned the deal. It believes Greece’s public debt is “highly unsustainable” and has urged huge debt relief and said any rescue must include restructuring of the debt. It also said Greece

must be given 30 years to repay its European debt, including new loans, extensions on the maturity of her debts – or creditors would be forced to take “deep upfront haircuts”. ECONOMIC And Britain and other EU partners are opposing the EFSM being used for a bridging loan. David Cameron said on Wednesday that the UK taxpayer should not be funding the bailout – but if Greece chose to leave the single currency, he was sure Parliament would choose support the country with economic aid. Robert Peston, the BBC News Economic Editor, said ahead of Wednesday night’s crucial vote in Athens: “Why on earth should Greek MPs vote for a painful economic reform package which the IMF – the supposed global arbiter of these things – does not believe it will put the country back on the path to prosperity?” He said Eurozone creditors – particularly Germany – had forced Mr Tsipras to accept IMF participation in the bailout to be negotiated if Greece accepted the rescue deal. “They told him, in effect, he would be turfed out of the Eurozone and into national ruin unless she took more of the IMF’s money and fiscal bossiness; which also looks tragically comic tonight, with the IMF saying that if it is all the same to Mrs Merkel, it would rather not touch Greece with a barge pole,” he added. “The IMF has made it clear that it does not wish to participate in any further Greek bailout, unless Germany and the rest drop their vehement opposition to big write-offs of Greek debt.” RTN went to press before the Greek parliament vote.

ALTEA COUNCIL is calling for responsible usage of water. The department responsible for water with the council of Altea has issued a statement asking that everyone be aware of how much water they are using due to the drought conditions that are currently being experienced. In particular, they highlighted the need to reduce filling swimming pools and washing cars, and cited them as unnecessary during such difficult times.

THE THREE organisations, ABRECA, Ociobal and Aico have stated that they expect the PSOE to support their motion of being against the all inclusive deals that are increasing in the resort. There are no official figures to quantify the direct impact that such accommodation has on the local businesses but the groups believe that 33% of occupancy is fully inclusive. The press conference was called only days after Ruben Martinez, PSOE spokesperson, announced that his party would carry a motion to be against the all inclusive establishments where customers can consume all food, drink and enjoy leisure without leaving the building. Hosbec, (Hospitality Hospitality Business Association of Benidorm, Costa Blanca and Valencia Business), state that the figures are more like 20%, around 8,000 beds, which are all inclusive and that the impact during the summer is minimal with over 300,000 visitors to Benidorm every day during August. Whilst the organisations agree that you cannot punish or restrict the hotels that provide the all-in service they have called for solutions to be found to help the local businesses who are losing trade. The ABRECA president said “we need to be clear what tourism is in Benidorm and what kind of customer we want to attract. There is a difference now, compared to 20 years ago, when visitors had more money and were more international, we now have less nationalities with less money to spend”. Currently the “tourism model” in Benidorm has direct meetings between Hosbec and the town hall, and ABRECA, Ociobal and Aico want to be included in the decision making that occurs. Whilst ABRECA state that the all inclusive is a problem to the town and local businesses Hosbec say that even the all inclusive customers consume in the town, particularly local to their hotel and so the regime works perfectly. It has not yet been agreed if all the parties can meet together and form an alliance to find a workable solution for all.

Emergency services in action

EMERGENCY SERVICES responded to a call last week in Benidorm where a fire had started on the 15th floor of a building. Within ten minutes, all of the vital services were putting their planned training into action in what was a drill to ensure that everyone involved worked as a team in a coordinated fashion. Onlookers stood watching as the Local and National police cordoned off the street, next to the Plaza de Toros, and smoke bellowed out of the windows from the 15th floor building. Police opened the street to allow the fire vehicles through as a total of 45 rescue workers were reported to be at the exercise. Santiago Rivera, the Chief of the Marina Baixa Fire Department said “people always expect us to encourage those trapped to jump from windows, but we prefer to simply use the stairs!! Unfortunately too many watch television and think that is real life. If we can, we will use the stairs to gain access”. With one fire fighter being carried out on a stretcher, the head of Unified Police Union (SUP), Ivan Pascasio, explained that the training exercise “improves coordination between the emergency services, and the realisation that it would be common for a fire fighter to suffer from heat stroke in this type of situation was part of the planned exercise”.

Terrorism warning THE FOREIGN Office has warned of a “high threat” of indiscriminate terrorist attacks on Spanish soil, including places visited by foreigners. by Jack Troughton AROUND 12 million British nationals visit every year and there are around 800,000 expats resident in Spain - they are urged to remain vigilant and follow the instructions of local authorities. And the Spanish government has stepped up security along the Costas with a high profile police presence, some officers carrying automatic weapons. The travel advice underlines the high risk comes as a result of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The Basque terrorist group ETA has not mounted an attack since 2009 and in 2011 announced the ”definitive” end of armed activity – British nationals were not the target of ETA activity. A Foreign Office spokesman said: “There is considered to be a heightened threat of terrorist attack globally against UK interests and British nationals, from groups or individuals motivated by the conflict in Iraq and Syria. You should be vigilant at this time.” Spanish police have made 47 arrests this year of members of groups recruiting individuals to travel to the Middle East for jihadist terrorism. The spokesman added: “In 2015, Spanish police have disrupted a number of groups suspected of recruiting individuals to travel to Syria and Iraq. “Some of them expressed an intention to carry out attacks in Europe. Spanish authorities believe that a number of Spanish nationals have successfully travelled to Syria and Iraq.”

Woman stuck in bar stool

A MANCHESTER woman had to be rescued by firefighters after getting stuck between the legs of a bar stool while reaching for her dropped mobile phone during a night out. Crews were called out after the woman, 35, became wedged while trying to reach the phone after dropping it under the seat, which was bolted to the wall at the George Hotel in Stockport, Greater Manchester. After being trapped for around 30 minutes, firefighters were forced to remove a leg of the chair, allowing the embarrassed woman to wriggle free uninjured - and clutching her mobile. Matt Rooney, watch officer at Stockport’s King Street fire station, said: “We have rescued people from various predicaments but never from a bar seat before. She was all right but a bit embarrassed – her friend was laughing at it. We had difficulty reaching screws under the seat so in the end we just pulled off the main leg that was obstructing her. If someone is stuck and they need us then we will go and help.”

The Foundation will be holding events throughout the year including a campaign to collect food, toys and clothing. They have also planned a range of sporting and cultural

activities through the summer aimed at promoting integration for those in the most vulnerable groups. The charity dinner called “drawing smiles” was attended by Toni Perez, mayor of Benidorm, deputy spokesperson Lourdes Caselles and the councillor for Social Welfare Angel Llorca.

Finestrat rabies campaign

FINESTRAT TOWN council have launched a vaccination campaign to run from 20th-25th July. Organised by the Department of Environment and Health, pet owners can go to the veterinary clinic at Casco Histórico (Carrer Figueretes, 31). The cost will be 12€ per animal, significantly less than normal, with the opening hours being between 10am and 8pm by appointment.

THE TOWN of Altea has commissioned the designing of the promotional material for their famous firework display, and broken with 29 years of tradition. The L’Olla firework display, to be held this year on the second Saturday in August, has normally been portrayed in watercolour. This year, for the first time, a photographer has been commissioned to provide an image that reflects the event for the posters and

other promotional material. Santiago Relanzón, who has 35 years experience with illustrations and exhibitions on the culture of Valencia, will be responsible for the imagery. With the display being a spectacular show of light and sound rising from the sea it is hoped that he can capture the essence of the event with one image which will be presented to the town hall committee for production on 20th July.

More sport events for Benidorm ON SUNDAY, the Poniente beach of Benidorm will host two sporting events, one on land and one at sea. by Jeanette Rice THE FIRST event, “III Cross Playa de Poniente” starts at 8am on Sunday 19th with registered runners hoping to win the 6,000 metre race and raise the 1st place trophy. Shorter distance races are available so that any young budding runners can participate, with the courses travelling along the beach area starting at the Paseo de Tamarindos along to the marina and Parque de Elche. The second event, III Travesia Playa Poniente”, starts at 9.30am

with swimmers starting on the Poniente beach, swimming out to their specific markers and then returning to the beach area. The categories for the swim are 500 metres for young children, 1000 metres and 1500 metres for the very keen swimmer. Both events feature in the Circuit V calendar and Cruises Alicante Cross Swim 2015. The charity events are raising funds for the non government funded charity “The Solidarity Ali-

cante Pantry”, which is a group of volunteers who help those living in extreme need, particularly distributing food to families who have nothing and running homework clubs for children in difficult circumstances. Police heroes save baby from bin

A BABY has been rescued in Madrid having been discarded in an underground bin.

by Jeanette Rice POLICE WERE alerted at approximately 7.20am on Wednesday morning, having received a call from a gentleman walking his dog. Guardia Civil spokesperson, Ana Martin said “we can confirm that a baby has been rescued from the area of Mejorada del Campo, just east of Madrid and medical staff have estimated the baby boy to be between

one and two weeks old”. Ms Martin went on to say “the Guardia Civil received a call after a dog walker heard a baby’s cry coming from the bins”. Fire fighters rushed to the scene to assist the police officers opening up the container, which although at ground level has a collection bin under the ground. Finally the officers located the baby,

which had been placed inside a plastic bag within a rucksack. Ms Martin reported that the baby appeared to be in good health and that local hospital staff were monitoring his condition whilst they have opened an investigation to hopefully identify the parents. The two officers, Carlos and Andrés are rapidly becoming celebrities after the

Guardia Civil tweeted a picture of them with the baby boy. The tweet read “#HappyWednesday for Carlos and Andrés, two Guardia Civil officers who have rescued this baby from a rubbish container in Madrid”. At the time of going to press the tweet had been re tweeted over 2,000 times with many calling the two officers “heroes”.

Grim discovery

YOUNGSTERS WALKING in Alicante’s Lagunas de Rabasa made a gruesome discovery when they stumbled on a suitcase containing the dismembered human remains of at least one body. Locals use the lakes to enjoy an illicit swim – despite the dangers of the remote water – and the teenagers had seen one case earlier but only opened it after noticing a strong smell. A group of 10 youngsters reported the find to police and the area was cordoned off before the scene of crime was visited by detectives and the coroner. Divers recovered two other cases, both containing human remains, from the water. Some of the lagoons are extremely deep and people have drowned in them. Divers have also recovered weapons and vehicles from the depths.

Summer is upon us

SUMMER IS here and I am often reminded of exotic flowers springing up. The Rose of Sharron is one of my favourites. Beautiful flowers one sees only here in Spain. Summertime means getting off the sofa, and springing into action to clean out the rubbish that has accumulated for the past year or more. All that stuff we store away thinking we might need it one day, but never do. It gives me a feeling of satisfaction to clear out rubbish. Summertime also brings more people to our urbanization. To be honest I wish I did not understand their language. The conversations are mostly a load of rubbish. In my imagination, whilst taking out the rubbish, I also put them in the bin because the rubbish that comes out of their mouths shows that is where they rightly belong. Benidorm crime

FOR THE past five years my husband and I have been regular visitors to Benidorm. We love the place, but we have noticed an increase in the number of muggings, pickpocketing incidents and beggars. This is very worrying and there seems to be nothing being done by the local authority or police. I will go on my next 3 booked holidays but if I still see the same things happening I will not return to Benidorm after then. Mrs Allison Gibb

My beef about beef I HAVE a beef about minced beef. I recently bought an 800g pack of minced beef in a well known supermarket, with the idea of dividing it into two portions and freezing both portions. On my kitchen scales, which are accurate, I measured the first portion of 400g and then measured the second portion which only weighed 300g. So, where is the beef? I was sure this couldn’t be right so weighed both portions again only to find that one did in fact weigh 400g and the other weighted 300g. The next time I went into the supermarket I weighed about six of the 800g packs of minced beef and found most of them were under 800g. This has become a hobby of mine. Now I always weigh packs of food. For example, in another supermarket I weighed a 320g pack of asparagus and it weighed only 275g. It seems what you see is not what you get. Seeing is disbelieving! Bull running death Eight die in fire International news...

A 44-YEAR-OLD man died almost immediately after being gored by a bull during the annual ‘fiestas’ in the Marina Alta town of Pedregeur.

A FIRE broken out in a nursing home in Northern Spain, killing 8 residents. In the early hours of Sunday morning the fire department received a call from a staff member of a nursing home near the Spanish city of Zaragoza requesting help evacuating their residents. The caller stated that a mattress had caught fire. The fire quickly swept through the three storey building, although the initial point of the fire was in a first floor bedroom. Carlos Carilla, the fire brigade spokesperson said “we received a call asking for help evacuating elderly people as a mattress had caught fire”. Although the fire services were quick to attend the scene, they were greeted with a building engulfed in flames which resulted in 8 residents dying and 11 others being injured Bulls running through including the caretaker of the building. Pedregeur in 2013 The cause of the fire has not been officially confirmed as yet but investigations are ongoing.

The town hall said the incident occurred at 1am and the remaining events of the festival on Wednesday were cancelled and flags flew at half mast as a sign of respect. It is understood volunteer stewards had warned the victim earlier in the evening not to get too close to the animals as he filmed them. Witnesses said he slipped and fell as

he tried to avoid a bull and was gored in the side and later the chest. Onlookers dragged him away but he was already fatally injured. And anti-bullfighting protesters and clashed with ‘aficionados’ during Denia’s annual ‘bous a la mar’ on Saturday until the two sides were parted by police and security guards. The traditional festival – declared an event of special tourist interest involves trying to commit a bull into a charge that causes it to fall from the dockside into the sea. Animal lovers had picketed the

temporary stadium in Denia Port with banners declaring the event “humiliated” animals However, a group of around 15 protesters managed to gain access to the stadium and confronted those taking part in the ring. As violence broke out between the two sides, police were called to end the brawl. And a photographer was assaulted on his way to Denia on Saturday at a petrol station in Altea. It is understood he was identified because he was wearing a shirt supporting the ‘bous a la mar’.

Sin Agua for Easyjet ﬂight! A WATER shortage meant that passengers on an Easyjet flight were diverted to Paris at the weekend. by Jeanette Rice

THE EASYJET flight, travelling from Newcastle to Alicante, was diverted to Charles de Gaulle Airport on the outskirts of Paris when it was discovered that the Airbus A319 was low on water. The crew took the decision when they realised that they had a very limited water supply, which is used in boilers to make hot drinks and also supplies water for the toilets. At the Charles de Gaulle Airport technicians re filled the planes tanks and after a two hour delay the plane was back in the air heading for its original destination of Alicante. Easyjet, the Luton based budget airline said “flight EZY6417 was diverted purely as a precautionary measure, the captain made the decision in line with procedures”. He went on to say “the safety and welfare of our passengers and crew is the highest priority and we would like to thank the passengers for their patience and the delay that was caused”.

“Visit Benidorm” visits London

THE VISIT Benidorm Foundation went to London during the week to promote the resort. The two day show, held at “Olympia” in London was an opportunity for all businesses involved in tourism to promote their products. by Jeanette Rice NESTLED AWAY in the beautiful area between Orcheta and Sella is a stunning ranch run by Sam Mayfield and her husband Richard. Initially, Sam and Richard set up the Ranch in 2012 as a rescue centre for abused horses but they soon realised how amazing their “herd” was and how much they loved to trek up and down on the mountains. This realisation saw the beginning of “Hoof and Mountain Spain”, where dedicated horses and ponies are almost smiling as they take their riders on an amazing two hour trek off road. Touching on a small part of the Camino de Santiago Pilgrim trail, riders meander up into the mountain side and can witness the most stunning views, looking down into the valleys with the

mountains encircling them, whilst the sun begins to set. It truly is an opportunity to get away from the hustle and bustle of life and with plenty of opportunities to take photographs riders can have a permanent reminder of their experience. Sam and Richard also offer 5 day treks, an adventure ride with activities included (such as rock climbing) weekend treks and romantic adventures. In summary they will fit the occasion to suit you. Nicky Chapman, one of the riders said “I was really nervous as I haven’t ridden a horse since I was in my teens, but it was the most amazing two hours. Sam and Richard ensured I was comfortable and safe before we started the trek and I have already

STARTING AT 1pm and finishing at 6pm, the event will be jam packed with the local Benidorm acts all wanting to help however possible. One of the volunteers, Dona, said “we arranged the event as we desperately need funds to treat the dogs coming in with leish and we have many German Shepherds coming in with hip and leg problems which will obviously require expensive treatment. So I decided, along with two other volunteers, Dave and Angela, that we needed to do something to raise awareness”. The shelter is also hoping to get some of the bigger, dominant, males castrated so that they can mix them with the females to help socialise them. The wish list is endless but not for luxuries, just simple things to make life better for the dogs whilst they are waiting to be re homed. Dona said “we would love to raise enough to get a second park area so that the dogs can get out and run, and just be happy and carefree”. Dona explained that the volunteers work

Raffle tickets will be on sale and there will also be an auction for a hand made vintage chair, kindly donated by Bumblee in the UK, which has, appropriately, a doggy print on the back rest. “We have been overwhelmed with the support we have received from everyone, it has been hard work organising the event but it wouldn’t have been possible if it wasn’t for the generosity of the local businesses and artists. The entrance fee will be 2€, with some of the money being donated to the La Nucia dog home. Buddies bar can be found on Calle Ibiza, not far from the outdoor market area. Repel the ﬂying invader

TOWN HALLS are advising residents of the best ways of taming the threat of the aggressive tiger mosquito as the insect continues to colonise the Costa. by Jack Troughton

JAVEA TOWN Hall has launched a public awareness campaign against the tiger mosquito and hopes to involve all residents in the fight against ‘Aedes albopictus’. The insect is a native of the tropical and subtropical areas of South East Asia. However, increased trade and overseas travel has helped it spread – the Asian tiger mosquito is from 2mm to 10mm in length with a striking black and white body and legs. The pest is closely associated with humans rather than living in wetlands and flies and feeds in the daylight hours rather than at dusk or at night. A spokesman for Javea Town Hall said: “It is active during the daylight hours and aggressively bites a great number of people; these bites are painful and can cause uncomfortable symptoms – itching, swelling, and sometimes allergic reactions. “Unlike other species, the ideal breeding grounds are shallow pools of water at elevated temperatures so it is essential to have your cooperation to assist in the eradication of these mosquitoes.” BREEDING Adult mosquitoes rarely move far from the site of their birth. “Most adults will be found within a few hundred metres of their breed-

ing container and therefore, if we rid this pest from our own properties, we benefit first and will be successful in the eradication of this pest, assisting the whole community.” People are being urged to prevent gardens and patios becoming a breeding ground by taking the following steps: avoid having shallow stagnated water such as in plant pot saucers, vases, drinking fountains, sinks, or ornamental ponds; cover wells and cisterns; circulate the water in fountains and ponds – goldfish in ponds will eat mosquito larvae; remove or cover objects that could accumulate water; regularly change the water in plant pots or domestic pet bowls. And people can also take steps to repel the invader. Use repellents, especially on the legs as the tiger mosquito usually bites close to the ground; maintain a healthy body as perspiration and strong odours encourage the insect to bite, avoid sweet perfumes; use mosquito nets and anti-mosquito ‘plug-ins’; wear clothing with long sleeves, long trousers and socks, and avoid dark and bright colours as these attract the pest; shake clothing – especially if it has hung outside; leave lights off when windows are open as this attracts the insect. Finestrat announce English course

FINESTRAT TOWN has released details of a free language course in English. The Youth Council of Finestrat have opened registration for a course which will prepare students for the advanced level B1 under the Cambridge Board. The course is free and open to anyone aged between 14 and 35 who pass a pre-entrance exam

on 31st August. Organised by the Diputación of Alicante the duration of 40 hours will be spread over Tuesday’s, Thursdays and Fridays during October from 5.30pm to 7.30pm at the Casa de Cultura in the town. as the English B1 exam takes place in December”. AFTER LAST week’s football and Multi-sports campus, this week’s main focus was the aquatic environment, in collaboration with the Real Club Nautico Torrevieja. This year, more than 300 boys and girls visited Torrevieja to participate in the Xpert Camps 2015. This week a football was not to be seen by instead students learnt how to rig and sail a Laser SB3 dingy, how to kayak, rowing and wind surfing along with improving their swimming and snorkelling skills

along Torrevieja’s coastline. In addition to these activities, attendees took part in a program of complementary activities that included activities at the sports complex, on the beach, several visits to different parts of the city and a trip to Acuopolis. Humanists Of Murcia Summer Solstice

THE SUMMER Solstice was celebrated on Bolnuevo beach under the trees in front of the Oasis. Members and guests provided their own food, and a good time was had by all. Absent friends participated by phone and email. Then, eleven pairs played petanca and, after several hours of play and only three fights, Carole and Rick won the final, beating Avril and Bill. Lots of people played giant jenga, and Steve and Janice were crowned Champions. The Jenga gathered a large audience from people walking by. Three Spanish kids asked to play and beat Margaret and Jean. All in all, it was a good day!

A DAY trip on a catamaran! by Colin Rich MUNDO MARINO’S boat adventures include a 5 and half hour day trip Catamaran excursion, and on Monday I tried out their catamaran Mundo Marino. I boarded in Denia Port at 11am (in front of Marques de Campo main street), the boat also docks at Javea. Even if you live here in Spain, you should not deny yourself a magical experience on board one of these boats. The 24 metre Catamaran Sailing Yachts are very spacious, large twin hulls ride the waves smoothly leaving guests to stretch out on the ample forward decking, to watch the waves skip by below the netting , whilst soaking up the views and sun. There are also plentiful seats and shade in the main part of the boat for those seeking a little less ‘action’. From the start the trip is relaxing and invigorating. In the summer’s heat, the sea breeze is refreshing, the views change from the ports and marinas giving way to steep and massive cliffs dotted with trees and hidden coves, all the while the deep blue water’s waves make their own mesmerising music against the boat. It’s the perfect setting for to enjoy a cool Mojito, and after a couple of hours motoring and sailing through the spectacular scenery, one couldn’t wait to dive in the crystal waters. The large boat laid anchor in waters in front of one particularly impressive cliff and cave at midday. Guests could dive in from boat or slide down the built in slide, which is fixed to the back of the boat and drops straight into the glass clear water. Incredibly, Jetskis were included as part of the trip and price (On Mondays). Buoyancy aids were provided, the drivers were clearly skilled and very experienced and keen to give passengers a memorable jaunt, from the youngest to the eldest on board taking up the offer. Finally, with energy levels lagging but still smiling, a plentiful and delicious lunch of barbecued chicken and steak was prepared and served by the crew , along with salad, French bread, and rounded off with refreshing watermelon and drinks. The boats’ excellent crew ensure your day is comfortable & enjoyable. On the trip back, to the delight of the sunbathers, the occasional wave splashed over the forward netting, a welcome refreshment on the warm day. All too soon, Denia’s port appeared on the horizon, signalling the last part to a very memorable day. Tired but happy, the passengers disembarked, thanking our hosts for a great and memorable day. Bring plenty of sun cream, a hat, and get ready to have a memorable day. Paella in the Port

FISHERMEN WERE cooking up a storm in Torrevieja on Saturday as their paella contest became the nerve centre for the seamen, their families and friends to enjoy a day of fun, relaxation and good food. by Keith Nicol FROM EARLY in the morning on Saturday, Torrevieja’s fish auction zone slowly turned into a place where the shouting and banter of the typical auction was replaced by music and paellas. El Grupo Musical Amarion, de Almoradí returned once again to join the party and became the centre of entertainment and music as they encouraged one and all to get on their feet and dance a pasodoble, cha-cha cha, salsa and whatever else the body was willing to do. Meanwhile inside the market, the real business was taking place as judges sampled each and every paella entered in the contest. After much debate, the winners were: 1st Carmelita and his group 2nd Joseph the Ice Factory 3rd Captain Pepito - Pharaoh But the afternoon was not only about paella and dance as expert chefs were also on hand to prepare gazpacho from marine and other delicacies to the delight of the audience. These acts are ingrained in the tradition of Torrevieja and looked forward to by the seafarers and their families and friends. This year’s event was attended by the Councillor for Fiestas, Africa Celdrán, the Salt Queen, Ainara Antelo, her lady Stephanie Veri and councillors Eduardo Dolon and Luis Maria Pizana.

XI Medieval Market a triumph THE THREE day event, held in La Nucia, saw thousands of visitors going back to the Middle Ages. by Jeanette Rice OVER THE weekend people flocked to the very popular Medieval Market in La Nucia to enjoy the craft stalls and hog roasts. The crowds were entertained during the evenings with jugglers, minstrels and musicians as they would have been in the Middle Ages. With audience participation being encouraged, members of the public were selected to have their heads placed in a guillotine as the crowd cheered for the executioner to release the blade. Stall holders demonstrated their crafts, happy to show the skills involved and maybe encourage others to learn something new, whilst traditional dancers weaved their way through the narrow streets with the drums banging out the rhythm. Parking in the Les Nits underground car park was free, alleviating the normal road congestion, making the event even more accessible. La Nucia is celebrating their 310th anniversary (1705-2015) and there are plans for many more special events before the end of the year.

“Big Toy” event a huge success

HUNDREDS OF spectators gathered at El Trinquet in Benidorm to watch a spectacle of “Big Toys”. The heat didn’t stop hundreds of people gathering in the large car parking area of the restaurant to watch proud car owners doing their wheel spins and burn outs, and no matter how big or small the vehicle, admirers of anything mechanical were enjoying the party atmosphere. Live bands played throughout the late afternoon and into the evening whilst the stall holders enjoyed a steady trading day. An apology from the club about Hull City EVERYTHING IS not quite what CD Torrevieja thought it was when it comes to CD Torrevieja’s friendly against Hull City on Saturday week. by Keith Nicol THE SPANISH part of the management board of Directors lined up the fixture with Hull City for Friday 24 July. Only when savvy British fans examined the dates of friendly matches for Hull City, did they alert the club that it was unlikely to be the first team that Torry would be entertaining. After a flurry of activity, frantic phone calls, Facebook messages, Twitter enquiries and discussions did it materialise that a huge mistake had been made and for this, the management of CD Torrevieja profusely apologise. Club Vice President Jeff Scott explained; “CD Torrevieja will be playing Hull City on Friday 24 July, but it will be their Under 21 Academy side. The negotiations were conducted by the Spanish representatives on the board, who clearly understood that they would be playing the Hull City first team. Tickets were produced with many buying them in advance instead of on the night and now the club has to eat humble pie and apologise profusely. Clearly anyone who wants a full refund on their ticket will have one. Those who wish to watch the talented youngsters and future City stars, will be able to do so at the reduced price of 5€, with ticket holders being refunded that sum who are still prepared to come and watch the contest. Those who

Basic concepts

IT IS very important for foreigners who have assets in Spain, to know a few basic concepts about the Spanish process of succession and inheritance, as with some simple actions you can simplify the process of your inheritance, save Inheritance Taxes for your heirs, etc. IN SPAIN, Inheritance Tax is payable by each of the beneficiaries of the estate, and shall be calculated as per the bond of kinship between the beneficiary and the deceased, the value and type of assets forming part of the estate and the Tax Domicile of the parties, etc. Therefore, in Spain, it is not like other countries where the Inheritance Tax is payable by the estate, but, here it should be paid for each of the heirs, legatees, etc. It is important in life, before death, to make a list of our assets and have documentation on them, their value, beneficiaries, contact details, etc. It is also very important to study the different options to help minimize future inheritance taxes for our heirs or beneficiaries. For example, if our heirs are not tax residents in Spain, they will only pay Inheritance Tax (IHT/ISD) in Spain for those assets situated in Spanish territory, which is known as Tax Real Liability. Therefore a considerable amount in Inheritance Tax could be saved if part of your liquid cash or savings are, for example, in the same country where your beneficiary has residence, providing that the Inheritance or Death Duties in that country are more favorable than the Spanish ones. At this point, we must remember that after the decision of the Court of the Justice of the European Union, of 3 September 2014 on discrimination against non-residents on the Spanish Inheritance Tax, the rules of the Inheritance Tax in Spain have changed, and even if our heirs are not tax residents in Spain,

but they are in a member country of the European Union, they may benefit from very substantial reductions and tax benefits, in many cases the same as if they were tax resident in Spain. It is also highly recommended to grant a Spanish Will, as the inheritance procedures will be much simplified, saving time and money, also you could distribute

WHAT’S A Grecian Urn? Nothing the Greek economy has just collapsed. THIS JOKE was told by the late Eric Morcambe over 40 years ago and had everyone in hysterics. It is possible to take advantage of this potential boom without undue risk taking too. What is available for Ex-Pats living in Spain are the Spanish Compliant Bonds that can offer security as well as a very good rate of return and can cater for all risk profiles from the Cautious Investor to the more speculative risk taker. In the early 1980o’s a similar thing happened but then by the end of the decade May had many storms and there eight continuous days of rain in June 1988 and then one or two storms in each of the next two months and really heavy gota frias in mid september. During the subsequent two decades summer rain has become rarer and rarer. Are we experiencing the natural effects of sun cycles or is the effect of genuine long term global warming affecting Spain? This is difficult to know, for although many coastal areas and nearby valleys and high plains are becoming desperate and there are daily photographs of potato, olive, grain and squash fields drying out with little survival of harvests even if storms do arrive in July and August. While we suffer droughts along the costas parts of inland Spain have had record heavy rainfalls, especially in the north. Today I went to collect bottles of spring water for drinking and making paellas from local springs. Although it’s an economic disaster that 90% of agriculture in our valley is now abandoned and there is no house building, this is currently fortunate, as if they were both active we would have a major disaster on our hands for s hortages of domestic water would inevitably occur. Many readers of our books and articles have been asking how our garden is surviving to be both beautiful and

productive with a minimum of watering. The answers are simple, the garden was designed to collect and distribute water to where most needed, the soil was improved before planting anything, most of our plants have a high degree of drought resistance, most are mulched and most of the garden is only in full sun for half the day or less, roots are coached to go deep and the garden has no general irrigation system. A few years back the papers from a workshop were published in a hurry as my first Kindle book. ‘Making waterless gardens a practical reality worldwide’. This was not an idea booklet although it helped a good number of expatriates. Therefore I set about correcting and expanding this into a 90 page book which was published as a hard copy and internet book titled ‘How to use less water in your garden – A practical guide to waterwise Mediterranean style gardening’ .The book can be purchased via Amazon Books. The book includes some 300 practical ideas and a listing of 250 of the most drought resistant plants that we have experienced in our garden and those of friends. By the way a couple of months ago I emphasised the importance of strong boundary fences and walls to keep out marauding wild boars, goats and rabbits. With less and less natural water the problem is becoming even greater, wild goats even drinking out of a swimming pool while the family of a friend swam. If you persist with the copious watering of unfenced gardens, orchards or vegetable plots don’t be surprised if marauding wild boar turn it totally over overnight. Parallel with this rabbits are taking to

eating anything with fleshy leaves and roots. Even the water filled leaves of young prickly pear cactus plants. If It’s Your Birthday This Week

The great challenges of the Cosmos right now suggest that time is speeding up, and yet you are slowing down. You are not going against the flow, you are tuning into your own inimitable energies and they will inspire many this astrological year ahead!

I LOVE to work in public. Being brought up on a stage since the age of four, and with an actress as a Mother, the stage is my home. However sometimes it is hard to pass intimate messages to unknown people sitting out there in the audience. I have to be very mindful of what I do or do not say because I have no wish to distress anyone at any time. If there is something very personal to say then I often ask that receptors of messages come to see me and that we spend a few minutes after the show to piece together the inference of a specific message. Such message would have been treasured by many of the audience and possibly got me some applause too, but I have to know what I can or cannot do, and always I try to balance what should be heard by setting limits. If in the end such a message does get through then I am able to say, with my hand on my heart, that I have done Spirit’s work. I am after only the messenger boy, ever hopeful that nobody will shoot me. Private messages do come through when many are together at a Show or at a Divine Spiritual Service. Spirit loves numbers of people and comes alive when spiritual people are to be found together. Yes, I do have to literally bite my tongue very often or tread the very fine line between saying or not saying something, which can cause a dilemma. I never want to embarrass anyone. Just sometimes I am able to ask if I can continue with a message, asking for permission to continue, and giving the option to meet after the show. That way the message is never wasted, but telling individuals something very private could work very much against me if there are a couple of hundred people listening in and watching the reaction, or distress of an individual. No wonder the back row is normally always full, and sometimes the front row is empty! So too many times I have left the stage and gone into the audience to give a cuddle or to offer hands on support to the tearful or the shocked. Since my own specific performance is always going to be in contacting those who have departed this Earth, there will always be people in my audiences who need to shed a tear. However nobody cries more than I do as my sensitivity is the keynote of my gift, and that self same gift has to be expressed from time to time in public and on a stage. I never acknowledge the death of those in Spirit when receiving messages live, because they are always so freely alive to me. Acting as a magnet it is my job to bring in those words that can mean so very much. I have had to edit things out so nobody is embarrassed in public, and always give an option of continuing the message offstage, if needs be. Very often, it is no surprise, some of my best work is therefore done backstage. This doesn’t help the show one little bit, but it also does not offend anyone too....I would rather it was that way. Starting to work with an audience can be quite terrifying; especially as they can say no to ever cue you are giving them. Luckily I am able to return to many as they actually do begin to accept what was said and this can help me to continue to get a sincere message to them as true evidence of the survival of their departed loved ones. Last week I identified a lady who was waiting for a message of survival in a crowd of people. I correctly told her that she had had many little spiritual sensations happening around her, regarding her departed husband; but she was waiting for the big one, a specific message directly from him. Suddenly I realised that this message should be passed to her on a one to one with me, after the demonstration. I gave that option and it was accepted and absolutely understood. We found a quiet corner to talk together as the audience left and I just took her hand and started to sing to her, “You are my sunshine, my only sunshine.” The response brought floods of tears and the lady removed her wedding ring. As she handed it to me I saw the inscription inside: “You are my sunshine!” This lady was waiting for her husband to sing the song he always had sung to her, to prove his survival. Job done, message understood, loud and clear!

In every audience is the shy person who is scared to be called on....but they are often those who really do need to get a message. Have no fear, I have never scared anyone... I hope!

Jazz returns to Javea MUSIC LOVERS are in for a treat as the International Jazz Festival in Javea welcomes renowned Italian pianist Stefano Bollani. by Jack Troughton NOW IN its 15th year, the event also features sax player Jean Toussaint and a night of swing with a ‘Roots and Herbs’ tribute to Art Blakey. The programme kicks off on Monday 27th July. However, action on the main stage in Plaza de la Constitucion takes place on 1st, 2nd and 3rd of August at 10.30pm each night. The Jean Toussaint Quartet and its homage to the ‘hardbop’ of Art Blakey is on Saturday 1st August and explores the creative energy of the American drummer and band leader on the 25th anniversary of his death. The Raul Marquez Trio and O Sister! Take the stage on Sunday 2nd August. Violinist Raul opens the night with music inspired by the 1930s and in particular Stephane Grappelli, one of the all time greats on the stringed instrument. O Sister! is an energetic and fun tribute to the North American sounds of the 1920s and 1930s – the decades of Dixie and Swing – and in particular the Boswell Sisters. And the Stefano Bollani Danish Trio ends the festival on Monday 3rd August. Stefano is one of the most popular pianists on the circuit and combines his talents as a musician with being an exciting entertainer. Tickets for each evening are 15€ and can be

purchased in advance through Instant Tiquet or tourist information offices in Javea. They can also be bought on the night. IT CAN be a little awkward when a famous celebrity comes out against their own profession, especially when they´re a bit older and could be deemed as being a bit nostalgic. Dustin Hoffman is one such individual who last week said to The Independent “I think right now television is the best that it’s ever been, and film is the worst it’s ever been in the 50 plus years I’ve been doing it! “ Strong stuff indeed from a man who´s never been one for hogging the limelight. Hoffman is from Los Angeles and looks great for 77, and has been making movies since he was 23 years old. He´s won, amongst several others, 4 BAFTA´s (The Graduate - Midnight Cowboy – John and Mary – Tootsie), and 2 Academy awards (Kramer vs Kramer – Rain Man), suggesting that if the man barks we really should sit up and listen. The Independent reporter asked Dustin about his lack of directorial work to which he replied “I don’t think that has anything to do with whether you are good or not, it’s just about whether your films make money or not!” top answer Dustin. By the way he won a Breakthrough Directing award in 2012 for movie ´Quartet.´ An internet survey was carried out on Dustin Hoffman´s comments about the poor state of film right now, and 80% agreed with him. How many more ´Blockbusters´ can we endure? How many more ´Limp Sequels´ of the one that went before are we being asked to tolerate? We really do have a level of crapolla film making on an epic scale! We´d best listen to Dustin Hoffman before the tidal wave of movie bilge reaches Tsunami proportions! Ringo Starr was born on July 7th 1940 and last week was given a right old beeday knees up by all his musician buddies. Macca sung Happy Birthday, Micky Dolenz posted a pic of himself and ex-Hollies singer Graham Nash doing the thumbs up, and Abbey Road studios also remembered the Beatles drummer 75th birthday, something I fancy brought a small tear to Ringo´s eye. Macca´s the baby at 73.

A rather rare item here, as the bit player gets more of a role than the lead player… Let me explain. Lily Allen (lead player) arrived at the VIP section of music event Wireless last Friday, and was refused entry. Security guard Sarah (bit player) told The Sun “I don’t know who Lily thinks she is, but she’s not getting past me!” No quote from Lily, just that one from mouth and trousers Sarah!

Architects drawings of new skyscraper Premier Tower are in the advanced stages, and it’s claimed the look is based on the silky smooth curves of singer Beyoncé. 27th film festival says ‘that’s all folks’

THE 27th Film Festival in Alfaz del Pi concluded this weekend with the red carpet award ceremony and dancing in the streets. The short film winner was “Welcome” with second prize going to “La Gallina” and third to “Os Meninos do Rio”. As reported in the RTN the audience had an opportunity to chose their favourite short film, this year the 500€ prize went to “Welcome”. Vicente Arques, mayor for Alfaz del Pi, expressed his delight at the success of this years event and asked all the winners to remember fondly how the town had been part of forming their futures. Javier Pascual, director of the film festival, thanked each of his team personally for all their hard work and also the public for making it yet another successful event. Residents and visitors took to the streets following the award presentation and continued to celebrate in true Spanish style with music and dancing. On the Saturday evening, hundreds of people had gathered on the Albir beach front for the screening of “Paddington”, with families enjoying the film together on a lovely warm evening.

Password recovery DEAR AUNTY: My husband has an Acer Aspire - Windows 7. A few months back a friend told him that a password wasn’t necessary to get into his computer so he deleted it. In the meantime, as we were moving house, the computer went into storage. Now, when he tried tries to get into it, a password is required. He has tried his old password and various others but - nothing. Our grandson in England told him to try hitting F8 which didn’t work either. Please help. Lena Aunty says: If you have access to an ‘administrator account’ in windows safe mode then you can change user passwords. Step 1: Start or restart your Windows 7 computer. Step 2: Press F8 to enter Advanced Boot Options before the Windows 7 loading screen appears. Step 3: Choose Safe Mode with Command Prompt in the coming screen, and then press Enter. Step 4: Wait for Windows 7 files to load until Windows login screen comes up. Step 5: Log in Windows with an administrator account until you see login screen. Step 6: A Command Prompt appears. Type net user in the Command Prompt and then hit Enter. All Windows user accounts will be listed for you. Step 7: Type “net user username 12345” and hit Enter. Note: “username” is your locked Windows user account name. And “12345” means the new password you want to reset for the locked account. User account “username” will be reset with new password “12345”. Step 8: The new password has been successfully reset for user when the command is completed successfully. Step 9: Exit and reboot the PC and Login Windows 7 PC with the new password.

Attachments

Dear Aunty, Recently I have been trying to send a photo attachment by e-mail. I can see the photo at the bottom of the message, but it just says “adding attachment” above it and the disc sign just keeps turning, and the attachment does not go. This has only occurred recently and I am doing the same as I have on previous occasions. Can you tell me why this is happening? Thank you once again for your help. If this is in an internet browser - ie, Chrome or Firefox - then perhaps security settings in the browser are preventing you from adding attachments. Try another browser. People seem to have fewer problems with Chrome. Other suggestions from gmail, include: - instead of using the paperclip icon to attach files simply drag and drop them into your email - Try temporarily disabling web browser extensions and add-ons (if that fixes it, turn them back on one at a time to find which one causes the problem) - The file name may contain special characters ( #, $, /, etc.) so rename the file without special characters, save it, and try again.

Absolute superlatives WHAT WE are going to look at today follows directly on from our previous articles about the bits you tack onto the beginnings and ends of words. THIS IS a rather nice word-trick which you can play around with at home if you like, without doing any serious damage. It is called an “absolute superlative” and is used when we wish to intensify the meaning of an adjective. Let’s start with a word like “grande” (big). We can expand the meaning with “muy grande” (very big). You will also hear in everyday Spanish the tendency to repeat words in order to intensify them, hence “muy muy muy grande”. Finally, to express an ultimate quality of bigness we can use this absolute superlative “grandísimo”. In English we deal with this idea differently by saying things like “great big”, or even “whacking” or “whopping” to convey the same idea of exaggerated size. This “ísimo” (masculine) or “ísima” (feminine) ending can be added to many adjectives, so here are a few: Fácil (easy) - fácilísimo (extremely easy, cinch) Difícil (difficult) - dificilísimo (really hard)

Guapo (handsome) - guapísimo (gorgeous) Guapa (pretty) - guapísima (stunning) As you can see I’m choosing all kinds of different expressions in English to convey the same feeling, which is often, but not always, a little bit slangy or informal. So now you can pick an adjective, any adjective, and try it for yourself, in both masculine and feminine forms, supplying your own exaggerated translations. Pequeño (small) - pequeñísimo Alta (tall) - altísima Feo (ugly) - feísimo Rara (weird) - rarísima Interesante - interesantísimo Similarly we can change the word “mucho” (a lot) to “ muchísimo” (an awful lot, a tremendous amount.) For example, a rather extreme form of courtesy when addressing or referring to a revered individual is “excelentísimo”, a title also given to town councils. You may well have read that General Franco bestowed on himself the exaggerated title of “generalísimo”, a word that is still to be found on street names up and down the country. Perhaps it’s partly to do with the Spanish tendency to be emphatic, but these endings are very commonly heard so are worth trying to get to grips with. If someone asks you if you are “contento” or “contenta” about something, you can if you wish, say that you are “contentísimo” or “contentísima”. Likewise you might be “enfadadismo” (extremely angry) or “encantadísma” (really delighted). You’d need a lot of Spanish attitude to go with them though!

This has certainly been the case for me, an avid fan all my life, but there might well be a light at the end of this rather dimly lit tunnel. Like so many sports, snooker is a game of numbers, and having found mathematics a breeze at school, one day I sat down and decided to take a long look at the game of snooker. I won’t indulge you any further on the workings of my mind, but suffice to say that I have devised an exciting new format for snooker using my love affair with numbers, as well as having taken into account several comments made by some professionals of the game. And now, bringing you right up to date, I am extremely pleased to tell you that the Green Baize Snooker Club next to Quesada Fish and Chips have agreed to hold the very first Snooker 10 tournament on the weekend, August 8th and 9th. Six players will be invited to play at the tournament in 5 sessions across the two days, and the player with the most winning frames after they have all played 15 frames each, will be the champion. The Butterfly Children Charity: Where it all began DEBRA UK was founded in 1978 by Phyllis Hilton, whose daughter Debra was born with Dystrophic EB, one of the most severe forms of EB or Butterfly Skin condition. by Patricia Thompson Little was known then about this condition and its medical management. For 15 years Phyllis successfully cared for Debra at home, against all odds, and started the world’s first EB patient support group Nieves and Iñigo Ibarrondo whose son, Iñigo, was born with EB, more commonly known in Spain as butterfly skin because the child´s skin is as delicate as a butterfly´s wing, created DEBRA Spain, the Butterfly Children Charity. In DEBRA UK they found the help, support and advice needed to care for Iñigo, but state support was minimal, leaving Nieves and Iñigo alone to provide 24/7 care for their butterfly child, while raising awareness and supporting other families throughout Spain. In 2003, the Aloha Golf Club chose the Butterfly Children Charity as the main benefactor of the Butterfly Children Charity Golf and Gala Dinner, raising sufficient funds to employ the charity’s first ever specialised nurse. In 2006 the charity’s first charity shop opened

on the Costa Blanca in Pueblo Bravo followed 18 months later by another in La Marina. Today the charity has 10 shops across Spain, funding over 60% of the work of 3 nurses, 2 social workers and a psychologist. By Jack Troughton DAVID PLATT has been appointed President of Teulada Moraira Lions Club taking the chain of office at the annual handover ceremony. Outgoing President Colin Lilley wished his successor every success during the next 12 months as he handed over the symbol of office and a president’s badge in front of an audience of some 50 members and guests, including Carlos Linares, Teulada Moraira’s new Mayor. The event was hosted by John and Meri Snell, and both Colin and David took the opportunity to look back on the achievements of the Lions over the last year. These included the Moraira Market bookstall going from strength to strength, the sell-out concerts at La Senieta in Moraira, and the success of the 2014 season of summer concerts by Moraira Castle. And the ‘Lions Den’, the fund-raising charity shop opened for business in September last year, a project instigated by Colin during his year in office – providing additional revenue for the community projects undertaken by the Lions. The club also attracted significant numbers of new members, their enthusiasm, drive, and fresh ideas opening new opportunities for the club. Dreaming of a white July CHRISTMAS AND all the traditional trimmings arrived early last Saturday when U3A Marina Baixa staged its annual ‘Summer Event’. by Jack Troughton THIS YEAR the theme was ‘Christmas in July’ and hosts Joan and Bill Flint welcomed 117 U3A members to their home and garden. Months of planning went into the celebration, the couple making endless shopping trips to source turkeys, pigs in blankets, Christmas puddings, and members contributed homemade mince pies - in fact everything needed for a traditional meal normally eaten on 25th December. And the garden was transformed for the occasion; resplendent with Christmas trees, fairy lights and a host of seasonal decorations. Rob Parker was DJ for the night, Elaine Mitchell organised a quiz with answers hanging from various parts of the garden, while Gary Bell contributed some well-loved Christmas carols. U3A Marina Baixa holds its general meetings on the fourth Monday of the month at the Casa de Cultura in Alfaz del Pi. The next meeting is Monday 27th July – doors open at 10am and the desks close at 10.50am to insure a prompt 11am start.

THEY THINK it´s all over. It is now, well, for another year anyway. We ended up having a big party which 142 people attended, with a hog roast at Dominos bar thanks to the owner, Colin. Our resident referee, Geoff, was our Master of Ceremonies and had us all dancing and singing in the aisles. The summer league made 320€ thanks to all the ladies from Dominos Red who ran the raffle. Half will go to a chosen charity and the other half will go to the league’s 10th anniversary party. Amigos Belgas 1 won the 1st division. In second place was los Bandidos, closely followed by Pirates 1. The second division was won by Dominos McCoys. In second place was El Mirador Whites closely followed by El Rancho. Basketball honours TWO PLAYERS from CB Torrevieja Cadet have been selected to join the Valencia Provencal team. Cadets Jose Manuel Torres Lopez and Vicente Hernandez Labrador have been selected by the Valencian Federation of Basketball to participate in a friendly tournament against Aragon and Catalan selections. The tournament was played last weekend in Zaragoza, and although Valencia had no luck with the results, as they have lost both games, the experience has been very positive for both torrevejenses players, as they have been measured against best players of their age. The first match was played on Saturday against Aragon and the result was 70-39 for the home team. Valencia players suffered from nerves from the tip off, as it was the first time playing together for many of them. However, Vincent was still among the top scorers with 8 points. The second game on Sunday

was played against the Catalan team, champions of Spain but against the odds, the Valencian team made it an extraordinary match, even being 7 points up in the third quarter. However in the last quarter the Catalans turned things around with their physical and technical superiority and rallied to finish with it being 64-53 in their favour.

Bike champ Manuel Penalver MANUEL PENALVER was crowned champion of the 58th edition of the “Gran Premi of the Sang” Picanya biking on Thursday. While many eyes in the cycling world where following the antics of Chriss Froome and Tour de France, the young rider closed the week with a third place in the Pobla de Vallbona to add to his spoils. On Thursday, July 9 a cycle ‘test’ was held in Piccanya (Valencia) one of the most traditional competitions in calendar of the Community. This was the 58th “Gran Premi de la Sang”, which attracted ninety riders who took part in a street circuit race of 80 kilometres. The race was decided by a sprint after a group had forming that managed to neutralize the lead again and again, as many different riders made attempts to escape during the fifty laps that made up the circuit. The winner was Torrevieja cyclist Manuel Peñalver from the Castillo Wave team, while the second to cross the finish line was Alejandro Gomis and third Carlos Garrido. Team prize went to Gimenez Ganga. A few days later, Manuel came third in the “Volta of Pobla de Vallbona”. Manuel Penalver, was back in the saddle on Sunday, coming in a creditable third place in the “Volta a la Pobla de Vallbona” race, held to round off XXIX edition of the Sports Week. 85 riders took part in a street circuit race of 95 kilometres.

The day’s results were, in 1st place, with 117pts, Rob Westland, Trinnie Sutherland, Dave Lett and Celia Cronin, in 2nd place, with 110pts, Ian Robertson, Alan Simpson, Graham Haslam & Steve Patton, and in 3rd place with 109pts, Danny Herron, Brian Barden, John Chesser, & Richard Fox. In a league of its own BENTLEY AND Maserati had experienced a double digit growth during 2012 and so it was no better a time to test a Maserati GranTurismo, as owned by pop star Britney Spears. Other owners include Manchester City star Mario Balotelli, who famously gave his a matt finish while Arsenal defender Andre Santos was arrested on suspicion of driving his dangerously following a 140mph police chase. That is a lesson to us all because the unique selling point of a Maserati is that it is a road going racing car at a pretty reasonable price (between £83,000 and a £111,000) when you consider the cost of a typical racing car. Any vehicle is a lethal weapon but the Maserati GTS is in a league of its own meaning that its pilot carries with them tremendous responsibility. The temptation to floor this beast (and that grille does literally make it look like a monster as you can see at testdrives.biz) at every opportunity is immense and therefore young owners such as the aforementioned need to be particularly careful when behind the wheel. “There’s little skill required in driving such a car,” says a long-in-the-tooth motoring hack, eyeing the six-speed automatic gearbox. “You don’t even need to think about changing gear, which is why it appeals to mindless footballers…” That’s perhaps a little unfair and I detect a hint of jealousy as I show him round the pearlescent white GTS. The fact of the matter is that it is possible to drive it as a manual thanks to the paddle shifts either side of the steering wheel.
