Huge fines announced for animal abuse THOSE ABUSING the new Animal Protection Act could find their acts punishable with fines up to 300,000 Euros for abuse of animals.

by Keith Nicol The soon to be introduced regional law of Protection and Advocacy for Companion Animals toughens penalties against animal abuse.

As explained by the Minister of Agriculture and Water, Adela Martinez-Cache, penalties range from mild to very serious infringements; the latter shall be punished with fines of up to 300,000â‚Ź.

The new regulations, which update the 1990 law, is much tougher on offenders than the previous one, with respect to ani-

mal abuse. In fact, among the sanctions highlighted include the organization and conduct of fights between animals of any species, use of animals in shows and other activities involving abuse, neglect or failure to adopt disease control measures.

Among other measures to be added to this new law, include the creation of a register of pets. To do this, the regional administration will coordinate with veterinary centres and other entities to take control over the total number of animals that exist; of those vaccinated and those without.

by Keith Nicol ON MAY 24th, Regional and Local elections will be held in Spain. Each week more and more faces are making their way into the political marketplace, as the political parties jockey for position prior to releasing their lists and starting the sometimes ugly business of electioneering.

This time round, the conservative PP, Partido Popular has opted to present those already known to local voters with those who received the majority of support of their fellow citizens four years ago, being put at the head of local lists.

This week the regional election committee approved the nominations of those from municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants. In the Alicante region, there are few surprises except for Benidorm and Orihuela. Perhaps the most notable is the candidacy of

Emilio Bascuñana who will lead the party in Orihuela. The manager of the Department of Health in Orihuela, and former president of Cruz Roja, the Red Cross, will be in charge of leading a PP in Orihuela after the expulsion of Pepa Ferrando and five other councillors.

The popular Mayors of Elche, Elda and San Vicente, Mercedes Alonso, Adela Pedrosa and Luisa Pastor, who have ruled one, two and four-term are repeated. So will the Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon who hopes to win a second term in office. For the few towns with more than 20,000 inhabitants, decisions are expected to be announced today, Friday. Rafael Saez, local president of the PP in Novelda and former mayor, will replace Milagrosa Martinez.

Official voters lists are due to be announced shortly and those around Torrevieja who might not be here to vote on May 24th, should visit Jean Paul in the Office of Tourism, who will take you through the process for postal voting.

MORE THAN a thousand children, their coaches, mentors, Mayor Eduardo Dolon and Councillor for Sports Luisma Pizana posed for the annual Municipal Group Photo on Wednesday evening.

Atop a 30 foot ladder was local professional photographer Antonio Garcia from Ag Fotografo, who was tasked to capture the special image inside the poorly lit Infanta Cristina Arena. On a daily basis, more than 2,500 people partake in different sports with the majority of them involved with football. For 2014/15 the Sports Council launched a dozen different sports including athletics, basketball, handball, judo, football, futbol sala, volleyball, gymnastics, roller hockey, rowing, tennis, fitness, Pilates, zumba, body swimming and body combat among others.

The shoot was also attended by more than fifty professional sports educators, coaches, as well as non-teaching staff. The photo session featured children from the age of six through eighteen and will be made into a presentation print, given to each participant and also mounted at the entrance to the Sports Palace.

Retired couple from Barcelona victims in Tunisia attack

by Patricia Thompson WEDNESDAYS GUN attack at the Bardo Museum in Tunis saw two Spaniards among the 19 dead according to the Spanish Foreign Minister, José Manuel García-Margallos.

Although the names of the dead were not to be revealed until the families were advised, other sources confirmed that a retired couple from Catalonia, Antonio Cirera Pérez, 75, and Dolores Sánchez Rami, 73 were the two victims.

A short announcement in Valencia from Margallos warned of the “huge confusion” surrounding the failed attack against the Tunisian parliament,

which ended with the attackers taking hostages at the nearby museum. “The Tunisian authorities are completely overwhelmed,” explained the minister.

Margallos also explained that the couple were part of a group of 90 tourists who had arrived in the Tunisian capital on board two cruises from the companies Costa Cruceros and MSC.

Inditex announces rise in sales Inditex, owner of fashion retail chains such as Zara, Bershka and Massimo Dutti, increased its 2014 sales by 8.3% to €18.1 billion, the company reported on Wednesday, with Zara representing the bulk of the sales.

Net profit over the period rose 5.2% to over €2.5 billion, confirming that the world’s largest fashion retailer by sales continues to hold a dominant market position.

Inditex has also announced an incentives plan for 70,000 employees with more than two years with the group.

‘‘Not all election hopefuls targeted by courts should be banned’’ says Rajoy PRIME MINISTER Mariano Rajoy admits that corruption is the issue that has most hurt his Popular Party (PP) during his second term in office.

But in an interview with radio station Onda Cero, the Spanish leader also defended that the decision to exclude politicians targeted in criminal investigations from running in elections should be made on a caseby-case basis.

Rajoy’s words echoed recent statements by former Socialist Prime Minister Felipe González, who told EL PAÍS that it was “a mistake to exclude all investigation targets from the electoral lists.”

“It depends,” said Rajoy, adding that being imputado does not necessarily lead to a court conviction.

“In fact, not long ago the Supreme Court shelved accusations against relevant political leaders,” he said.

To Rajoy, the problem with preventing election hopefuls under court investigation from running in elections is that “you are putting them on trial ahead of time. Every case is different; in each specific case it is necessary to make a concrete decision.”

With the PP embroiled in several high-profile corruption investigations, including Gürtel and Púnica, Rajoy noted that the individuals involved in these cases were no longer with the party, and that he was ready to adopt any kind of decision aimed at being “more efficient against corruption, which must not happen again in Spain.”

Report twice requested

by High Court Judge in tax implications

by Patricia Thompson HIGH COURT judge Pablo Ruz has twice had to request a report from the Tax Agency, estimating how much tax the organization should have paid on shady donations from 2008. The Agency has finally produced its report, putting the figure at €220,167.

But the tax experts were at pains to highlight that political party donations, whether illegal or not, are not subject to corporate tax, as the examining magistrate claims.

The Tax Agency’s analysis essentially lets the PP off the hook, despite High Court judge Pablo Ruz’s view that the ruling party should have paid tax on the €1,050,000 it accepted in 2008 from donors who either went over the legal personal limit or who were barred from donating because they had been awarded government contracts.

The law establishes that any amount over €120,000 in withheld taxes constitutes a crime.

The Tax Agency’s estimate of €220,167 is well above that.

But the report stresses that non-profit organizations “such as a political party, [the Catholic charity] Cáritas or the Red Cross” are not subject to corporate tax because the money reverts to society.

BRITAIN’S TEN most wanted fugitives believed to have fled to Spain are being hunted in the latest appeal under the banner of Operation Captura.

There are still a number of criminals who are evading arrest

by Jack Troughton The independent UK-based crime-fighting charity Crimestoppers, the National Crime Agency (NCA), are once again hot on the trail of those attempting to evade justice by hiding amongst the expat community.

And once again – backed by Spanish police – they are appealing for help in a campaign to track down the fugitives and are asking the public to be their “eyes and ears”.

The ten men added to the new ‘most wanted’ list by UK law enforcement agencies are wanted in connection with a number of crimes including manslaughter, rape, indecent assault of a child, and drug trafficking.

Launched in Madrid on Tuesday, this is the ninth appeal made under operation Captura since 2006 – appeals that have proved to be highly successful. The previous eight calls for help have led in 65 from 76 named fugitives being snared.

British Ambassador Simon Manley said: “I hope that the public will, once again, help us find these fugitives. The ongoing success of Operation Captura is a demonstration of the excellent law enforcement relationship between our two countries and the role that ordinary citizens can play in tracking down criminals.

“Together we can insure that these criminals are brought to justice and their ill-gotten gains seized.”

SUCCESS Lord Ashcroft KCMG PC, who founded Crimestoppers in 1988, added: “Operation Captura has proved a huge success since it was launched in 2006 and the majority of individuals on our most wanted list have been captured.

“However, there are still a number of criminals who are evading arrest. We must insure these individuals are brought to justice. We are confident we can successfully hunt them down with support from the Spanish authorities, as well as

the Spanish and UK police.”

And Hank Cole, Head of International operations for the NCA, said: “Spain is not a safe haven for British fugitives. The NCA and its partners will continue to pursue these individuals relentlessly and return them to the UK to face justice.”

He said 65 fugitives had been caught from the Captura list along with others linked to other operations, thanks to “excellent” collaboration and intelligence sharing with Spanish colleagues.

“However, we still need the support of the public – be our eyes and ears and tell us if you have any information on the whereabouts of our targets.”

Don’t walk and WhatsApp Don’t walk and WhatsApp if you want to stay safe

by Keith Nicol WE’VE ALL witnessed people walking along the street, looking at their mobile phone, and being totally oblivious to traffic and other pedestrians around them. With WhatsApp being primarily the messaging service of choice, especially among the younger generations, a new initiative has been launched

by WhatsApp and Murcia council to remind pedestrians of the dangers of not paying attention to the world around them.

A few months ago the municipality of San Javier led the way by installing warning signs aimed at users of the service to pay more attention when walking along the street. Now it’s the turn of the capital to follow in their footsteps. Javier Iniesta, Murcia’s Councillor for Traffic and Transport said that the city has introduced a campaign to warn WhatsApp users, through road markings at 80 pedestrian crossings and 200 street signs, warning of

the dangers that can happen through the use of WhatsApp while walking down the street.

Since WhatsApp users are generally looking downwards as they use the service, the council have added a number of different slogans, painted onto the road at Pedestrian Crossings with such messages as “I’ll reply later” or “Wait, I’ll cross” accompanied by the logo of the instant messaging service.

To really try and get their message out, the city have installed 200 street signs warning of the dangers of using applications while walking down the street, and giving advice to pedestrians. However, they have taken this one stage further through performance art titled “Trick or death”. Actors dressed as ‘death’ can be found wondering the capitol’s streets looking for WhatsApp users, and to give them a ‘little scare’ by running over to users and getting their attention to remind them of the dangers of not paying attention while walking down the street.

Meanwhile, the deputy of the PP, Ana Guijarro, said they are working together so this bill passes unanimously. “It was society demanding that the law be updated and tougher sanctions introduced and this is reflected in the text,” she said. The bill will continue its parliamentary process and be approved in the next week.

Jackson Browne heads Jazz San Javier

JAZZ SAN Javier will be full of top names again this summer, with Jackson Browne, Brad Mehldau, Dianne Reeves and Tony DeSare all signed up for this summer’s festival.

THE EIGHTEENTH edition of the festival takes place from July 3rd to the 31st and features such other top names as the American singer Dianne Reeves, who returns to San Javier to receive the prize of the festival, after releasing her latest album, “Beautiful Live”.

This was her first album after five years away from the recording studio and won the Grammy for best jazz vocal album of 2014.

“Dianne is the successor to Dinah Washington and Carmen McRae, is a particularly versatile singer, able to move from classic to “rhythm and blues” jazz, “soul”, pop and Latin sound,” according to Alberto Nieto, director of the

festival organized by the city council, that’s put on with a budget of 485,000€, more than half of which they cover directly through ticket sales.

Also on the bill are the quartet Network, consisting of bassist Charnett Moffet, who has played with Wynton Marsalis, Dizzy Gillespie and Herbie Hancock, guitarist Stanley Jordan, drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts and pianist Cyrus Chestnut. CMD & The Nomads is the acronym of their leader, Chris Minh Doky, the most prestigious Jazz artists from Denmark, who is joined by the very famous drummer Dave Weckl, “jazz-funk” guitarist Dean Brown and keyboardist George Whitty.

American Jackson Browne, is one of the great songwriters of the genre known as “country-rock” and is prosably best known in pop music circles for his number tweleve UK hit single ‘Stay’, from the album Running on Empty, in 1978. In the USA alone he has sold more than 18 million albums and in his early days his songs were recorded by such artists as the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Tom Rush, Nico, Steve Noonan, Gregg Allman, Joan Baez, the

Eagles, Linda Ronstadt and the the Byrds. He cowrote the upbeat “Take It Easy”, with The Eagles’ Glenn Frey, which became one of their first hits and has often performed on stage with the supergroup. This is his first visit to the festival where he shall also be presenting his new album, “Standing In the Breach”. Browne will be performing on July 7th, his last European Tour date, before returning to the USA for summer concerts.

Nieto added; “Brad Mehldau, considered as the best pianist of his generation will be bringing his trio to the festival and playing music from his five albums from the series “The Art of the Trio”. Vocalist Tony DeSare, who has been compared to Frank Sinatra and other revivalists like Harry Connick Jr. and John Pizzarelli is also joining us. It’s his first time here in Spain and preceded by the great success he has had in the United States, where he has released four albums. A Spanish fairytale

by Jack Troughton THE FIRST reported ‘fairy door’ has mysteriously appeared on the Costa Blanca this week – the little people possibly fleeing persecution in the UK. A woodland trust in Somerset launched a crackdown on the practice of nailing the tiny doors to trees as homes for fairies – saying they were spoiling the magic of the woods.

Far from trustees being away with the fairies, the ongoing controversy has made headline news with the likes of the BBC, Daily Telegraph, Guardian and Independent reporting on the clash.

And RTN can reveal a small decorated and perfectly formed wooden fairy door has now appeared on a tree trunk at the side of Cabo la Nao in Javea’s Arenal.

The trust conserving Wayford Woods in Crewkerne, Somerset, launched its curb on the “profusion of elfin construction” after matter got out of hand and hundreds of fairy doors appeared – many brightly coloured and said to be more at home in Barbie world than a fairy grotto.

Trustee Steven Acreman said he was not “anti-fairy” and said the first door was a charming wooden construction, fitting perfectly into the trunk of a tree and opened to reveal a little bed.

“It is a very complex situation and nobody’s admitting that they are evicting the fairies. It’s just that fairy control is required, otherwise we would be covered in fairy doors.”

Eclipse on Friday

However, fairy doors at Wayford Woods and other woodland, including the New Forest, have become a major attraction for families, children encouraged to leave notes for the fairies, posting them at the doors.

ELFIN Countries across Europe have their own names for the little people and legends concerning elfin folk – traditions dating back to less complex times. It has also become big business, companies offering them for sale – up market department store Harvey Nichols stocks them - to fix on trees and to skirting boards in the home to encourage “a bit of magic” for youngsters.

Presenter Auntie Noelle of Bay Radio, very much a pro-fairy person, discovered the Javea fairy door after featuring the plight of the Somerset fairies on her radio show.

“I came across the story about 10 days ago and have followed it ever since – it is making big news in the UK,” she said. “I am sure the fairies heard the story on the radio and having been evicted from Somerset decided to move to warmer climes.

“I hope the Javea fairy door means there will be a new population of fairies here in Spain, I think Spain is a fairy friendly country.”

She added: “I think the fairies are rather too shy to get in touch...do I believe in them? Absolutely!”

IN BETWEEN a few showers and grey skies that have been forecast for today, on Friday 20th March, there will be a partial eclipse of the sun that’s visible in Spain. If you’ve picked up your copy of the RTN early enough, here’s where you may wish to go to experience it safely, for yourself.

For those of any age, who would like to know more or to experience this phenomena, Torrevieja’s Department of Youth and the Centre for Information and Youth (CIAJ), in collaboration with the Mastral Project and Astroingeo of Alicante, has organized an activity where you can experience this first hand. The place to be is on the Paseo Marítimo Juan Aparicio, opposite the Montebianco cafeteria from 9am. There you can see the eclipse safely through the use of special filters, goggles and indirect methods, to ensure you don’t harm your eyes. This morning, the moon will hide up to 60% of the sun. The eclipse will begin at 9:04am and end at 11:18am with the optimum viewing time being 10:08am, this being the maximum time of eclipse. This time the eclipse will be total in parts of northern Europe and in Spain, the Faroe Islands.

The last partial eclipse seen in the local region was in November 2013 and the next will be in 2021, but to see one equal or better compared to today’s, we will have to wait until 2026. The Mastral Project and Astroingeo Association emphasize the importance of using eye protection at all times, and that damage to the eye trying to see the eclipse can be irreversible and even cause blindness. It’s very important not to look directly at the sun, and especially important not to look through cameras, as the magnification of the solar rays, can be extremely harmful to the naked eye, and even good sunglasses may not be of help.You can find more information about this eclipse on the web at: www.eclipse.eltiempoentorrevieja.es.

Lions last roar

by Keith Nicol AFTER A decade spent raising more than 100,000€ for endless good and needy causes, Torrevieja Lions Club have closed their doors. Club President Iain Bennett said: “It is with much sadness and great reluctance that we are announcing the closure of the Torrevieja Costa Lions Club after 10 highly successful years serving the community of Torrevieja and surrounding villages.”

Despite the best efforts of successive Membership Directors and members, the Club have been unable to recruit members who were willing to take on the responsibilities associated with running a Lions Club to the extent that Iain and Janette Bennett have between them held the post of President for the past five years.

The Club formed in 2005, received its Charter from Lions Clubs International on 15th February 2006 and as one of the most prolific associations in the region has helped hundreds of people in the Community, raising and disbursing over 100,000€. Over the last 18 months alone the Lions have disbursed over 30,000€.

Working in association with Specsavers Torrevieja, the Club collected over 14,000 pairs of used spectacles for recycling and Immediate Past President Janette was responsible for setting up the Specsavers initiative in Spain where all branches of

Specsavers now collect glasses for recycling on behalf of Lions Clubs in Spain. Specsavers Torrevieja will continue to collect used spectacles for recycling and members of the public are encouraged to drop off their old spectacles there.

The Club has been highly regarded locally and has received great support through sponsorship from local businesses over the years, those businesses include TV Choice Magazine, Comaskey Properties and Spanish Solutions, Bluemoon Solutions, Specsavers Torrevieja, Marabu Lounge, IBEX Insurance, Golden Leaves, Vincent Real Estate, Costa Blanca Green Fees, HiFX and GO Advertising. The Club particularly appreciate the support of the management and staff of Hotel Cabo Cervera who provided the Club meeting room free of charge for many years. Firstly a cheque for 2,500€ euros was pre-

sented to Reach Out Torrevieja. This money was raised when the Lions in association with the Footlights Theatre Group from Calpe performed the Musical West Side Story in Teatro Municipal Torrevieja in February 2014. In normal circumstances those funds would have been presented long ago, however the funds were not released by the Town hall until 20th February 2015.

Cheques for 1,750€ were presented to ALPE Torrevieja, AFA Torrevieja, ADIS Vega Baja and Vecinos de San Miguel Archangel all of whom the Lions have regularly supported over the years. There are still some outstanding funds due to the Lions from Teatro Municipal Torrevieja for shows that took place in 2009 and 2014 and in due course these funds will be presented to Reach Out Torrevieja and Vecinos de San Miguel Archangel.

Lion President Iain would like to thank everyone who supported the Lions over the years including all of those who served as Lions and in particular those who held the key posts of President, Treasurer and Secretary year on year. Surely the EU must step in

JUST WHEN you think that you have heard it all, along comes some lunatic from the Department of Works and Pensions who decides against the well-known and established scientific facts about how our planet rotates around the sun, to extend winter by two months in order to exclude all expat destinations from the winter fuel payment.

For centuries, our seasons have been set and governed by the Summer and Winter solstice, and the Spring and Autumn Equinox, (i.e., winter solstice is around 21st December and signifies the onset of Winter, Spring equinox is around 21st March and signifies the onset of Spring, Summer solstice is around 21st June and signifies the onset of summer, and Autumn equinox is around 21st September and signifies onset of Autumn).

So, if winter is now five months, does that mean spring only lasts one month? And I suppose the next act of the DWP is to slow our planet’s orbit between the winter solstice and the spring equinox to allow for the extra two months, then speed it up again as spring is only one month and the planet must get between the spring equinox and summer solstice in this short time?

Surely the EU must step in and prevent this laughable situation where the DWP is trying to punish pensioners who are exercising their rights, under EU law, to reside in a member state.

Close the loophole Excellent MAY I add this much to this very real fraud-risk story, so that readers may be wiser before the fact rather than ¨twice shy¨. The German mentioned may well be the same who cons people into renting their furnished flat only to find he´s changed the ¨motura¨ lock and departed with the moveable contents, without having paid anything but the deposit which the agent takes! I am not surprised to read of one looking for money for a locksmith! And yes, to ask for money is not an offence under Spanish law, and neither is changing the ¨mottura¨ IF you are the tenant,

not having to PROVE to a locksmith that you are the legal owner of the property! Beware of this legal loophole even though your lease may clearly state that nothing may be done to the property by the tenant without the written permission of the owner; for some reason this is totally ignored by locksmiths, who may not even ask to see the lease. I think the property board in Spain (is there one?) should push for a total closure of this loophole so as to make it illegal for anyone to order a front-door lock to be changed without proof of express authority to do so. Las Salinas donate to Alimentos Solidarios

by Keith Nicol ON WEDNESDAY, at the monthly lunch of the Las Salinas Masonic Lodge a gift of 1,000€ of foodstuff was handed over to Torrevieja’s Food Bank, Alimentos Solidarios. Having received their Charter from the Grand Lodges of Spain in 1994, Las Salinas No. 74 is one of Torrevieja’s oldest and most established Masonic Lodges and hold a monthly lunch called the Salt Box, El Salero, at which they always hold a prize raffle. Luncheons take place on the third Tuesday of every month at the Asturias Restaurant, Orihuela Costa, except in July and August, and also this month’s case because of the clash with Easter.

Lodge Master Keith Hutchinson presented a voucher to the value of 1,000€ for food items that the Lodge had purchased for Alimentos Solodarios, which was gratefully re-

ceived on behalf of the Food Bank by Juanjo Alvarez de Pablos. Juanjo said a few words of thanks, in very good English, with the translation provided by his son, before posing for photographs and sitting down for lunch.

Alimentos Solidarios have been providing hot meals and providing staples and hygienic supplies for the needy in Torrevieja since January 2010. They are located in the former Guardia Civil station on the corner of Calle San Pascual and Calle Apollo. GREAT THINGS are forecast for Torrevieja’s Polina Berezina as she prepares for World Rhythmic Gymnastics competition with a ‘warm up’ in Barcelona last weekend.

Polina is a core part of Torrevieja’s Rhythmic Gymnastics Club and a member of the National Rhythmic Gymnastics team. In February she participated in the International Tournament in Moscow, where she scored a very impressive 56.362 points. This past weekend she returned to International competition, participating in the International Trophy “Ciudad de Barcelona”, where she again represented the National team, combining with her partner Natalia García. This was the second major event of 2015 as Polina starts to prepare for the season ahead and to try to get the desired scores to represent Spain at the World Cup in Stuttgart, which will be held in September 2015.

Polina placed ninth overall in Barcelona, an excellent start to her preparation for the season. Her next competition is the World Cup in Bucharest, Romania, to be held from 1st to 5th April and the World Cup of Pesaro, Italy, which takes place a few days later, from 8th to 12th of April.

This week Guardia Civil agents recovered a second century Roman Anchor from Cartagena, looked upon as a priceless artefact from the era. Over the last few months, agents have been investigating web sites dedicated to direct sales between network users, bartering products of various kinds, among which they detected a Roman anchor. The anchor was of interest to researchers, who were aware of such articles, which because of their artistic and artistic value, are protected by law and selling of such items is prohibited.

The investigations led to the agents being able to locate the person who was behind this sale and, after being informed of the special, protected nature of the object, they voluntarily surrendered the piece to the Guardia Civil.

The anchor was well preserved and in good condition, with an approximate length of 120 centimetres and weighing close to 100 kilos, as it was a lead weight.

Agents of the Guardia Civil delivered the recovered item to the Heritage Service of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia, to allow it to be exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Murcia.

SEVEN YEARS on, many of you will remember Quesada Chip Shop 3 as the Inn Plaice, in 2004. Tony and Dianne used to have a takeaway fish and chip shop in a small town called Bowne in Lincolnshire, a very busy shop. They would visit friends in Torrevieja and loved the idea of opening a chip shop in Spain.

In January 2004 Tony and Dianne with daughter Claire and grandson Kallum along with son Mark moved to Spain, later joined by Garry and his soon to be wife.

Now all the family, including seven grandchildren, are all in the same area running the family business.

It was decided later to lease the Inn Plaice and to open Quesada 1, then later Quesada 2 (in Villa Martin). All three restaurants are owned by Tony and Dianne.

The Inn Plaice is back as part of the family, now called Quesada 3, run by Claire and her husband Matt. “At Quesada 3 it is like we have never been away,” said Claire, “We are already seeing some familiar faces coming in to see us.

“Quesada 2 in Villa Martin is run by my elder brother Garry and his fianceé Claire.

Singing for cancer charity THE ORIHUELA Costa Male voice Choir is heading north to play concerts in Alfaz del Pi and Albir in support of the Spanish cancer charity AECC. The choir will play the Forum Mare Nostrum in Alfaz on Saturday 11th April at 6pm and Foundation Frax, Albir, from noon on Sunday12th April.

the choir will perform a wide range of material – from songs from the musicals to Mozart, Gilbert and Sullivan, and some beautiful traditional Welsh pieces.

Nigel, a professional singer, conductor and vocal coach, formed the choir in 2012 having already established three other successful choirs in Spain and having been the conductor of the award-

winning Coventry Male Voice Choir.

The Weigh-In group that meets at the bar has raised a considerable amount for the charity but now Mark Daughtry, the owner of the bar, has raised an equally valuable €375 by running in the recent Torrevieja Half-Marathon. Sponsorship money was shared with the S.A.T animal rescue charity, with AECC’s share being handed to AECC Hospital Volunteer Ann Bissett. A large bag of uncounted coins was also handed over at the same time, but the amount of that is unknown at the present time. Thanks go to Mark, his generous sponsors and the anonymous donor of the coins.

The Society for the Care of Animals in Need fair is being held at the Casa de Cultura between 11am and 5pm and entry is just 1€ per person.

And a handmade patchwork quilt is being raffled – tickets cost 2€ and the draw will be made on the day. It had been lovingly created by SCAN volunteer Sheila Brown – the second time her handiwork has been up for grabs to raise money.

SCAN has insured that only handmade crafts made by local artisans are on sale at stalls at the fair.

These include: cakes; chocolates and sweets; pickles, chutneys and jams; soaps; portrait paintings; cards; jewellery and accessories; ceramics and art; patchwork and quilting; speciality dolls, fabric crafts; teddy bears; and much more.

And visitors can also use a refreshments bar where drinks, homemade cakes, freshly made sandwiches and savouries will be on sale. A professional jeweller will also be at the Charity Fair to clean jewellery with an expert touch.

Playa Flamenca’s Ex-Student Success at ‘The BAFTAs’

by Keith Nicol IT’S ALWAYS great to hear about a success story from the Costa Blanca. Philip Toft contacted RTN to say: “My Granddaughter Lucy Nicole Rogers was educated here on the Orihuela Costa since the age of 4. She graduated in 2014 from IES Playa Flamenca School with a High School Certificate qualification.

She applied to study Level 3 Photography at Huntingdon College Cambridgeshire, and commenced her first year in September 2014.”

Lucy’s talent has been recognised by the school already and was one of four students selected by her tutor to attend the BAFTAs in Covent Garden, London.

Lucy fought off competition from more than 1,000 other photographers fighting for position on the red carpet. This experience has given her a first real taste of working in the media business and life as a press photographer.

Local newspapers in Huntingdon and Cambridge were contacted and ran articles of Lucy’s work at the BAFTAs, selecting several of her photographs for their publications. Among those Lucy photographed that found their way into print included photos of Eddie Redmayne, who won the BAFTA and an OSCAR at the 87th

BEFORE RUSHING out to fill the boot with boxes of new plants review the degree of risk that you are willing to accept in planting up your garden or apartment terrace containers.

For instance: Only take risks with subtropical or tropical plants if you can provide the necessary localised microclimate.

If necessary only plant delicate plants in containers and take them into a glazed terrace or greenhouse for the winter, or treat them as expendable annuals or biennials being very grateful if they do over winter well.

Only plant the most frost resistant varieties of bougainvilleas (the purple flowering), hibiscus (reds), bignonias(orange flowering) and lantanas ( purple ground cover and orange ‘bandera’ bushes).

Having decided on your general planting strategy follow the following guidelines.

Select plants that match the style of garden and recognise how large a mature plant will become within 2, 5 and 10 years.

Plant only healthy plants whether you purchase plants, or propagate your own.

Select and purchase strong healthy plants that show no sign of disease or infestations, have a good shape with strong joins between the branches and trunk, and have a good root ball in relation to the size of the growth above the soil.

If a plant is top heavy the small root structure may struggle to extract sufficient moisture and nutrients from the soil to support the super structure when planted in the harsher conditions of the average garden to those in a propagating house. We therefore often prefer to buy a smaller balanced plant and bring it on at a realistic rate in the garden.

Have plenty of new unopened flower buds. We prefer to

purchase a plant with just one or two open flowers in order to check the colour but with many buds that will open later in our garden - unless we need instant colour as in-fills for a special occasion If you buy a plant in full flower with few oncoming buds it will soon finish flowering as the plants priority when first planted in the garden will be to put down roots. Yes many garden centres do market plants in full flower but some now charge more for well budded but as yet un-flowered plants than those in full flower.

Have good supporting canes and ties which have not started to rub or cut into the bark. This is especially important when selecting tall shrubs and trees.

Do not buy plants that show signs of being: seriously wind or frost burnt, seriously root bound (however if buying a tree there is an advantage if strong roots have grown through the bottom of the container into the soil beneath.), very recent propagations, as yet without good root structures. This is especially important with climbers sold in very small pots, strangled by tight mini plastic propagating nets or meshes, signs of being stressed by heat, or of being allowed to dry out, waterlogged and therefore perhaps susceptible to fungal diseases.

Harden off hothouse annuals before planting out.

When buying something unusual check that the garden centre can tell you how to care for the plant. If not, ask them to find out before you buy.

If the garden centre does not have the variety or colour of flower you want ask if they can order it for you. If not try another garden centre.

When purchasing very large plants such as palms or old olive trees check that the garden centre is able to deliver and plant for you at a reasonable cost.

If you are building up a collection of plants search widely for good and unusual plants. Good plants can often be

purchased at weekly markets and gardening clubs as well as at gardening centres. And of course swap cuttings for propagation or already rooted cuttings with friends.

If plants seem expensive check at a number of other places. Prices can vary widely. If you buy a large expensive succulent or perennial consider immediately taking cuttings to propagate another five, ten or even twenty plants for planting out in a few months time to create a mass effect.

Recognise that unlike most other purchases no warranty normally comes with plants. Few outlets will readily replace plants that die.

When your garden is fully planted ensure that the unplanned impromptu purchase of a special/unusual plant that catches your eye can be fitted in by replacing an existing plant, re-planning part of the garden, or adding yet another pot to a mounting collection.

Remember that every additional pot increases your daily summer watering!

Did you lose money investing in Bankia’s shares? You can get your money back.

ALMOST DAILY now there are new court judgments from audiences all over Spain: Madrid, Valencia, Oviedo, ruling against Bankia, in complaints from consumers who purchased Bankia shares (stock) after its initial public offering (IPO).

MANY COURTS understand that investors who bought shares (before knowing the real situation of Bankia) did so on the basis of information provided by Bankia, mainly in the prospectus, which was absolutely wrong and did not reflect the real situation of the financial entity. Proof of this fact is highlighted in that shortly after its IPO, in 2012, the accounts were reformulated and the authorities had to bail out the bank.

Moreover, as published in the press, experts of Bank of Spain concluded in their reports that Bankia’s accounts did not reflect a true picture of the entity.

THOSE WHO CAN SUE OR CLAIM. In principle Bankia could be claimed against by all those who bought shares until approximately May 2012, when the accounts of Bankia were redone and the real financial situation was known. (shareholders, and also those who sold their shares at a loss).

DEADLINE TO SUE OR CLAIM. Although the deadline to claim is not clear, it is advisable to sue before three years, starting from May 2012, i.e. before May 2015.

AMOUNT TO BE CLAIMED. In principle one could claim for the amount of the investment, or the damage caused by the investment.

LEGAL BASIS FOR THE CLAIM. Revocation or cancellation of the shares purchase due to lack of consent, as the investors agreed to buy based on data provided, which was not true and correct. Contractual liability (malpractice) could also be claimed against Bankia. Also liability for the wrong information contained in the prospectus published.

THOSE INTERESTED IN CLAIMING, SHOULD PREPARE THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTS: Copies of receipt or documentation relating to the subscription, purchase order of the Bankia shares, etc.

We believe that the chances of getting back the investment are high. BFA, the parent company of Bankia, recently announced that they have reserved 468 million euros to meet the liabilities from Bankia’s IPO in 2011, and Bankia had also reserved another 312 million euros, to cover this same liability. This announcement looks almost like a tacit acknowledgment of their responsibility.

Crackdown on financial crime

IT WAS announced in the press this week that HSBC is closing the Jersey bank accounts of foreign customers as part of a crackdown on financial crime, including money laundering and tax evasion.

THE SCANDAL-hit lender is writing to thousands of clients with ‘onshore’ bank accounts, which are only meant to be held by people living in Jersey or with links to the Channel Islands tax haven.

Customers are being told to attend local branches with their passport and address details or their accounts may be closed.

The bank said at the moment it is not writing to clients of its HSBC Expat division who hold offshore bank accounts in Jersey.

But a spokesman said: ‘We continuously review details we hold on all our customers to ensure we have the information we need to protect them, together with wider society, against fraud and other financial crime.’

Over the last year I have a number of expatriate clients who have had bank accounts in Jersey ,Guernsey

and Gibraltar (to name just a few places) for numerous years who have suddenly found their accounts are being closed and they are being asked to give a bank account for the funds to be paid into. No explanation has been given and usually less than a months’ notice.

Not only are Banks now worried about being accused of tax evasion but with all the quantative easing that has gone on and cheap money from the central banks, plus low interest rates in the UK and Europe they just don’t need or want your money.

Is this going anywhere?

I am 17. I have known my friend since we were at school. She has never been particularly nice, and lately I discovered she has been gossiping about me. She talked me out of applying for a job recently, and then applied for it herself. I really don’t want her in my life any more, but in the past, when I have tried to break friends, she has managed to talk me around for old times sake.

In all honesty, I would say this woman has used you, and only when you are flush with money is she interested in picking up where the relationship left off.

Don’t throw good money after bad. My advice is to cut your losses, and look for a woman who is more down to earth if you want a more lasting relationship.

There is no reason for anyone to have someone in their life who means them harm. You could tell her face to face that your friendship is over, or if you don’t think you are able to do this, send her an email. Then, it is down to you to hold firm, and not respond to her pleas of getting back together.

She has proved herself to be a bad friend in the past, and you would be much better off without her.

As you go through life, you will meet people, who really deserve to be called ‘friend‘. This girl does not.

I have been seeing a woman for several years. In the past two years, she has cooled off, and seems only interested in seeing me when I am able to spend vast amounts of money on her, and show her a good time. I think she’s a real knockout, and I feel proud to have her on my arm. I spent all my savings on wining and dining her, and now have nothing left. This was about the time she lost interest. I also suspect, from reading her Facebook page, that she is seeing other men, and doing exactly the same with them. My friends say she is using me. Is this relationship going anywhere?

Segovia & Salamanca ONLY A short drive from Madrid are three of the most outstanding cities in Spain.

TRAVELLING TO our city centre hotel based in the beautiful Segovia we arrive in time for you to start your explorations by enjoying an evening meal in one of its many restaurants, possibly trying the Cochinillo (suckling pig), for which Segovia is famous.

Segovia is built on a rock and has the appearance of a ship sailing between the mountain ranges, the ship’s bow formed by a fairytale castle sitting right at the front peak of the rock and overlooking a valley cut out by two rivers, Eresmas and Clamores.

This medieval marvel has looked over the valley for centuries, its rooms filled with souvenirs of a fascinating past Plaza Mayor in Salamanca

that includes some of the most important figures in Spanish history. Statues and paintings amount to a gallery of ‘who’s who’ in medieval Spain, filling large, grey-walled rooms, while the castle’s location offers magnificent views over the wellirrigated landscape tumbling down to the two rivers.

The massive cathedral in the centre of the rock provides the sail for our ship. In the town square, where people-watching could become addictive, time should be given to the interior of this stunning building. But even before you reach any of this, you are confronted with the most magnificent entry gate to any city anywhere in the world, the Segovia Roman Aquaduct. This 92ft high, 2,883ft long marvel of Roman architecture has stood in its present position, welcoming visitors to the town for more than 2,000 years, a sight once seen, never forgotten; central Spain at its memorable best.

After a day of rest and discovery of Segovia, day 3 takes us to Salamanca, orbiting the largest Plaza Mayor in the country.

In spring time, storks circle overhead, nesting in the upper extremities of the attractive buildings that form the borders of a square, a meeting, eating and drinking centre for locals and tourists alike.

Salamanca boasts not one but two universities and uniquely two cathedrals, constructed of unusual goldcoloured stone taken from a nearby quarry.

Boat rides are offered on the river Tormes which is straddled by a Roman bridge. A day in Salamanca opens the door to ancient Spanish culture mingling with the energy of young Spain. Many young people fill the Plaza Mayor, the streets and the cafes. Students from all over the world study

Now cobbled streets lead you past ancient Celtic sculptures to the massive old cathedral.

Our final day gives us a short morning visit to Madrid, where there is time to explore before lunch and making our way back to our original destination.

tech Printing flight details HI AUNTY: I’m trying to print my “e-mailed Monarch Flight details “. Each time I print it, I only get about two thirds of the flight details. My folders list is on the left of the page, then I have a grey margin, and in the centre I have the flight details, which I need to print. To the right of my flight details is a grey margin, and to right of that, is a margin with adverts. But, when I print, I’m left with the right hand third, plus the adverts missing.

I must mention that the printed text is larger than it should be. I have reduced the text from 100% to 50 and 75 but to no avail. Also, I have printed a test document from ‘favourites’, and it came out normal.

Any suggestions? Many thanks -Tom. Aunty says: Hi - If you are using an “online” email service, like Hotmail, then you choose print from within Hotmail, not from the browser.

If you use the browser print option, you will print off the screen page, and not just the required email.

Hence why you are getting all your folder options, and not the whole email in the printed document.

Removing programmes Hello Aunty Virus: Can you please help me to remove some programmes? I have tried to uninstall but they refuse to let me, the programmes are: ‘istartsurf and flashbeat’. I tried to download kickass free films downloads and these just seemed to latch on to my PC - I then tried to download and install ‘spyhunter’ but was again unsuccessful as I found that ‘binkiland’ had installed itself on my PC. Hoping you can help. Barry Aunty says: Someone else had problems with istartsurf late last year, and these are the instructions I sent her, which she followed and successfully removed it from her PC: istartsurf has installed itself onto your PC, probably during installing “free” software.

First you need to go to programs in control panel and uninstall anything that was installed around at the same time - “free” programs can install many things that you may not want.

Next, in your browsers check the addons and extensions for istartsurf, and any other potential rogue addons.

Next, go into the “search providers” section in your browsers, and remove any unwanted search engines listed.

Finally, on all your browser icons that you click to open your browser, right click and go to properties.

On the shortcut tab, extra code may have been added to open up istartsurf whenever you click on the icon.

So delete any code that looks like “www.iStartsurf.com/?utm” that appears after the “iexploer.exe” or “chrome.exe” You may want to check the properties for all your browsers for this extra code.

Then download and update and run Antimalware bytes, which will scan and hopefully remove any further traces of this.

Response: I did follow as you advised but in some cases I couldn’t do exactly as you said but the end result was the same (I hope) as I cannot see this programme anywhere also the programme and its links do not show on the uninstall window.

Outlook 2007 address book DEAR AUNTY: Running Windows 7 and Outlook 2007, I used to open the address book and see all the entries.

Now I just get a search box. It was really useful to see all the entries, if only to jog my memory of entries I should contact or delete. Is there any way of getting this facility back? Martin Aunty says: When I open the address book in Office 2007 I get a search option, and my list of contacts. I have an option to change what is shown: Outlook Address Book, or Contacts. Changing this changes what is displayed in the bottom area.

So if you have ‘Address Book’ selected, perhaps your emails are all located in ‘Contacts’ - so change the option. In Tools / Options you can select what is shown as the default - Address Book or Contacts.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs

Never no one, nothing HELLO AGAIN! Well we are going to start the New Year with a break from verbs.

What? I hear you say. You mean there are other things in Spanish apart from verbs? Indeed there are, and although I am feeling fairly optimistic about the year ahead (don’t ask me why) this subject is actually about being negative.

Yes, our subject today is being negative, but not just that boring old “no” that we can place before verbs to turn them around “tengo” (I have) “no tengo” (I don’t have), and so on. Instead we are going to look at the Spanish for never, no one or nobody, and nothing.

The Spanish for “never” is “nunca”, and we will use this to illustrate how these negative words function in sentences.

Basically, you have two options, you can either start a phrase or sentence with them as follows: “Nunca he visto una cosa igual” (I’ve never seen anything like it!) “Nunca” in this position sounds emphatic, and so lends itself to this kind of exclamation. If we want to use “nunca” less emphatically we have to put it later in the sentence but create what we call in English a double-negative.

“No he visto eso nunca”. We’re back to the use of “no” at the beginning and if we try to translate word for word we end up with “I haven’t never seen that”, which of course is not at all correct in English. In Spanish though, it is the principle way we express our negatives,

with “no” before the verb and the other negative word later in the sentence.

Exactly the same thing occurs with “no one” which is “nadie”. We can say “Nadie vino” (Nobody or no one came) or we can express exactly the same idea with “no vino nadie” which just sound slightly less emphatic.

“Nothing” is “nada” and we can illustrate this with a very common phrase that is often taught as an item of “survival” Spanish – “no pasa nada”. Again if we were to be horribly literal we would translate this as “nothing doesn’t happen”, but of course it should have just the one negative in English, giving us “nothing happens”.

The phrase could mean exactly that, as in the sentence: “Nothing happens in this village.” “En este pueblo no pasa nada”.

However, it is far more commonly heard as a response to some kind of apology or expression of discomfort from another person, the equivalent of our “don’t worry” or “nothing’s the matter”. I say: “Perdón” (Excuse me) and you reply “No pasa nada”.

We can also use “nada” in some contexts to mean “at all”, as in “no me gusta nada” (I don’t like it at all). If we want to be even more emphatic about our dislike of something, we can also say “no me gusta en absoluto”. This sounds positive but in fact it is a negative phrase. I can’t think how to translate that extra emphasis, other than by becoming suddenly Irish “I don’t like it at all, at all, at all”.

Another little negative thing you might like to know is “neither … nor” which is “ni …. ni”, although we don’t always express ourselves the same way in English. For example: “No me gusta ni la carne ni los huevos” (I don’t like meat or eggs – I like neither meat nor eggs). I do like eggs by the way, it was just an example.

If we focus on the most common, everyday uses of these negative words though, it is remarkable that they are frequently used entirely on their own – often as responses. “¿Has estado en Nueva York?” “Nunca”. (Have you been to New York? Never) “¿Quién vino a la reunión?” “Nadie” (Who came to the meeting? No one) “¿Qué te pasa?” “Nada” (What’s the matter with you? Nothing). “Nada” is the ultimate one-worder and is used in many ways.

Sometimes it abbreviates “de nada” (not at all). “Muchas gracias” “Nada”.

Sometimes it is used at the beginning of long explanations (for some strange reason). A reporter says: “Cuéntanos qué paso” (Tell us what happened) and the interviewee starts his long detailed account with: “Nada. El avión se despegó y ….” (Nothing. The aeroplane took off and ….”)

Finally, you can finish off a conversation with “pues, nada” (well, nothing) which can also be abbreviated to “nada”. Nada. Hasta la semana que viene.

Campoverde Canine Club ESTABLISHED IN Spain in July 2000, the Campoverde Canine Club is still going strong teaching dogs, and their owners, all aspects of obedience, with plenty of fun along the way. The new classes will begin very shortly with the final examinations taking place at the training ground of the C.C.C. in Campoverde.

The winner from the Basic Class was Alison MacTavish, all the way from Bonny Scotland, and Magnus, her cross Schnauzer/Terrier. Well done to you both for scoring 108.5 marks out of 110. Patience and perseverance works wonders.

In second place was Neelam Darar and her Cocker Spaniel “Indy”, scoring 106.3 marks.

The Intermediate Class was won by Eva Olsson and her flying toy poodle “Polly”. Even at this early stage I have high hopes for Polly especially in the Agility exercises. Scoring a credible 125 / 140 points, Polly just held off the challenge of Tracy Storer and “Charlie” ( 122.7 points) and the class character “Alfie” the Jack Russell and his handler Susan Beckett (121.9 points) The Advanced Class winner was a runaway win for Heather Powell and her G.S.D. “Rebel”. Scoring 133.9 out of 140 was a real achievement for Heather and her somewhat immature and playful dog. It just goes to show what can be done with dedication.

The Agility Class covering a total of ten different obstacles was mastered by “Bailey”, handled by his more than competent owner, Pat Frewin. Sometimes it appears that “Bailey” finds that the jumps are all too easy. All jumps were marked on ability and control and to achieve 95 out of 100 marks shows the effort Pat has consistently put into the training exercises.

Panic for millions of people around the World!

Millions of people throughout the world live in terror of this particular day, and virtually become a recluse in their own home with this phobia, an irrational fear that something awful is about to befall them. Such superstitious beliefs are also quite prevalent in Greece and Spain where usually Tuesday the 13th is considered the unluckiest day.

This year, 2015, will see three Friday the 13th’s!

But did you know that the fear of the number 13 is called Triskaidekaphobia, and the fear of Friday 13th is called Paraskavedekatriaphobia.

The phobia Paraskavedekatriaphobia derives from a 99-year-old word made up of a combination of the Norse and Greek roots words for ‘Friday’ (Paraskeví), ‘13’ (dekatreís) and ‘fear’ (phobia).

Friday has long been considered unlucky for many reasons such as in religion with Jesus being crucified on a Friday , to the mythical.

Frigga was a Scandinavian love goddess, who was worshipped on the sixth day of the week. Christians called Frigga a witch, and considered Friday to be the witches’ day.

One famous person who supposedly had

the fear of the number 13 was Queen Victoria.

The story goes that she was invited to a dinner but refused to join the other guests because she would have been the 13th at the table, until someone pointed out that one of the guests was pregnant! A new superstar is emerging as an old one fades

By Tony Myles HAVING JUST watched a PGA competition over the weekend I am now a fan. Campbell will be fine-tuning his “I-told-you-so” expression and indeed that is exactly what he did more than two years ago when he so accurately forecast the coming of Jordan Spieth.

So often you witness young prodigies emerging and the general expectation is that they will be a “flash-inthe-pan” and, after a single moment of excellence, they will fade as fast as they first appeared, thereafter to be consigned to the “Where are they now” features some years later.

Not so with young Jordan.

Just a couple of years ago he was the “Rookie of the year” having just turned professional a few months previously. Then in 2013 he went from 810th to 22nd in the world golf rankings. Despite that meteoric rise I remained unconvinced. Then over the last few hours of Sunday his performance in the VALSPAR trophy competition sealed it for me. In a three-way playoff he was up against self proclaimed Superstar Patrick Reed and the man eager to reinforce his return to competitive golf, Sean O’Hair.

Over three holes each of these golfers found themselves

in difficult and potentially losing positions. But, they each constructed remarkable chips and putts to keep them in contention. Until, from over 28 feet, Jordan sank the putt that would secure him the title and his second PGA Tour victory before he has reached his 22nd birthday.

Last year in the Masters he led the field until eventually being overtaken by Bubba Watson. I expect him to be one place higher this year.

Moreover the emergence of Jordan reinforces the youth element in the US Golf squad and together with Patrick Reed and Ricky Fowler they will be a formidable threesome when they confront Europe in the next Ryder Cup. That is generally good news for Golf in US. Unlike Reed, Jordan has a likeability that is reminiscent of Luke Donald. He has a maturity and self-confidence beyond his years and he displays the quiet self -control that is the hallmark of Adam Scott. He has all the youthful exuberance of a former Tiger Woods.

Campbell was right. He will be the next major superstar in Golf.

Honda Civic Tourer IT IS possible to make a visually striking estate car and one that in my opinion looks more fetching than its hatchback equivalent. I am talking about the Honda Civic Tourer, which is a thoroughly attractive vehicle from whichever angle you care to look.

The hatchback is a decent enough car but the position of the spoiler has always been an issue for me because it gets in my way, obscuring my vision when looking in the rear view mirror. The Tourer doesn’t have that problem. Finished in orchid white with 17” alloy wheels this takes the estate car concept to a whole new level.

Until now it was only Volvo that caught my eye in this department. The boot is massive too, easily swallowing our tandem pushchair and making it an ideal travelling companion. So we drive it to Suffolk to put it through its paces. It takes us a few hours to travel from Hampshire to Suffolk and the ride is comfortable.

supportive and it quickly becomes clear to my wife that everything on the dash is angled in the driver’s favour. She never likes this because she can’t keep an eye on what’s going on.

This model is fitted with sat nav and while it is undoubtedly useful this example is incredibly frustrating. Like a dodgy London cabby it takes us a long way round from Woodbridge, Suffolk to Ipswich, added to which its female voice whispers and we cannot fathom how to make her speak up. This means that it’s really difficult to hear her above the noise of our daughters and the road. Fortunately visual directions are also provided on the dashboard display.

It is surprising that this Tourer feels really quite nimble despite its very sizeable boot.

During our test Caroline is invited to a 40th birthday party for one of her friends who lives in Chatham, Kent. So we punch in the details to the sat nav and a couple of hours later we arrive. As with all cars the best efficiency is recorded at 56mph and when travelling at this speed for some hours it is possible to nudge the miles per gallon over 70. Driving like this enables us to travel from Hampshire to Suffolk and back and Suffolk to Kent and back all on the 50 litre tank of diesel with a good amount of luggage.

The Tourer is certainly visually appealing and looks decidedly futuristic, which is surprising for an estate car, which so often looks the poor relation when compared to its hatchback or saloon

variants.

Parkers, the car experts, write: “The Honda Civic Tourer is the estate version of the capable five-door Civic hatchback. It’s relatively small on the outside – the same width and wheelbase as the regular hatch and a scant 235mm longer – but can lug an extra 147 litres of luggage. From launch it is priced at approximately £1,000 more than the regular five-door Civic hatchback and enters a competitive market against other hatch-based estates such as the Seat Leon ST, Ford Focus estate, Vauxhall Astra Tourer and Toyota Auris Touring Sports.

Although it’s not all that much longer than the hatchback model, boot capacity is the Civic Tourer’s real strength.

“Official boot volume is a very generous 624 litres (to the window with the seats up) – by comparison the Vauxhall Astra Tourer’s official capacity is 500 litres and the Ford Focus Estate 476 litres. With the seats down, luggage capacity increases to 1,668 litres (measured to the roofline).

That figure includes a large hidden compartment under the boot floor offering nearly 120 litres, enough space for two decent sized travel bags to be stowed out of sight.

That compartment disappears if you select the option of a spare wheel, however. With the 60:40-split seat backs folded downwards there’s a completely flat load area and a load length close to 1.8m.”
