French controllers set to cause turmoil PASSENGERS FLYING this summer need to be prepared for more delays as further strikes are called. by Jeanette Rice AIR TRAFFIC controllers over Europe had been planning to cause chaos for travellers as talks continued to break down with the French controllers and it was only at the eleventh hour that negotiations reached an agreement and SNCTA, the French union, announced that the strikes had been lifted, due to have started yesterday until 4th July.

In Spain travellers can expect further disruption as the USCA union has confirmed further dates for industrial action due to start next weekend, in a continued bid to support those workers who received penalties from the wildcat strike in 2010. Read the full story on page 10.

EDUARDO DOLON, the former Mayor of Torrevieja and Cesar Sanchez are two alternatives to José Ciscar and former president Fabra is backing Eduardo Dolon as one option to chair the Council of Alicante. The movements in the Partido Popular to try to hold onto the Provincial Council of Alicante have accelerated in recent days and the figure of José Ciscar, the Provincial President of the PP in Alicante, seems key. The fact that Ciudadanos may not validate his presidency could lead to Císcar stepping aside as he has always stated that: “the party is first.” Císcar has keep in constant contact with the national leadership of the PP who are negotiating with Ciudadanos Leader Albert Rivera. Alternatives for the Alicante provincial president include the Mayor of Calpe, César Sánchez, who has the necessary guarantees to go in as deputy for the region in the event that this is necessary. The Partido Popular’s regional president Alberto Fabra initially had as his alternative to Císcar, the former president of the provincial corporation, Luisa Pastor. her name for consideration. Thus last week, Alberto Fabra proposed as an alternative to Pastor the former Mayor of Torrevieja Eduardo Dolon. The situation in Torrevieja is strange as the two Ciudadanos councillors were part of the eleventh hour pact to evict Eduardo Dolon as Mayor of Torrevieja, but Fabra considers him the perfect man to chair the Alicante council. Next week could be key in terms of negotiations between the Ciudadanos and Partido Popular as the PP still seeks to recover some municipalities by working alongside Ciudadanos. What happens now in Torrevieja and Alicante could also have an effect on the November General elections and possibly result in a loss of votes for Ciudadanos in Valencia. Many Ciudadanos voters never expected their vote to be used to install the left-wing Socialist parties into power in Torrevieja. The hope was that Ciudadanos would take a role in local government and help to make changes to the city’s policies from within rather than them sitting on the sidelines and allowing the city to be changed, for better or worse, without taking any responsibility for a department within local government.

Dolphin leaps onto boat breaking woman’s ankles

A WOMAN’S ankles were broken when a dolphin jumped into her family’s boat in southern California. Chrissie Frickman was celebrating her 18th wedding anniversary with husband Dirk and their two children when a pod of dolphins swam alongside them. One of the animals leaped on to the small vessel, landing on top of Mrs Frickman. Her husband, Dirk, pulled her out from beneath the panicking intruder. Mr Dirkman said “It hit my wife and knocked her over, and punched my daughter. I had this 350lb dolphin in my boat. There was no way to get it off.” He called authorities as he steered toward an Orange County harbour, splashing water on the dolphin to keep it alive. Two workers helped Mr Frickman pull the dolphin on to the dock with a rope before they released it. The dolphin swam away, apparently not seriously harmed despite some cuts to its nose and tail. Mrs Frickman is recovering after five hours of surgery to her ankles.

Spain increases terrorism threat FOLLOWING THE tragic events in Tunisia, the British Government has increased Spain’s threat levels. by Jeanette Rice NOW ON “high risk” alert Spain, as well as many other countries in Europe, have stepped up their security levels since up to 30 British tourists were killed in Tunisia last Friday, leaving many British reconsidering their holiday plans for this summer. Threat levels worldwide are varied but the highest levels include France and Spain.

Flowers on the beach of Tunisia

The UK, Spain, and France are all rated as having a high or severe threat of terrorism by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Spain is listed as high risk as fears rise of a copycat event to the Tunisian terror strike, with the Spanish government now lifting its own threat level following the events not only in Tunisia but also in France. The murders in Tunisia took place at a resort which has two hotels, both operated by Spanish firm RIU. Interior Minister Jorge Fernandez Diaz said the decision was made due to the “proximity of our country to the places where some of these attacks took place”. He added: “I have adopted that decision. We are at war with barbarism against civilisation.” Spain and France join African nations Algeria, Tunisia and Egypt on a high level. The Tunisian attack occurred when a gunman opened fire on tourists staying in the popular resort of Port El Kantaoui, just north of Sousse in Tunisia, killing 38 people. The gunman, identified as student Seifeddine Rezgui, calmly walked onto the beach area, where guests were enjoying their surroundings, and removed his Kalashnikov rifle that he had hidden in a parasol and began shooting wildly. Followed by brave Tunisians, who did not want him to escape, Mr Rezgui was eventually cornered and shot by members of the Tunisian police force, although at this time it has not been confirmed if he acted alone or as part of an organised terror cell. Wednesday saw the first of the confirmed British citizens that had died being flown back to the UK, to RAF Brize Norton. Friday 26th June saw the news of three major terror attacks, prior to the Tunisian attack but on the same day in the morning the head of the decapitated manager of a transportation company was found hanging from a fence near Lyon, in southern France, along with two banners said to bear Islamic writing. The attack, at a U.S.-owned factory, began when a delivery van, allegedly driven by Yassin Salhi, entered the facility, according to Paris Prosecutor Francois Molins, whose office handles anti-terrorism cases throughout France. Not long after that a bomb ripped through Al-Sadiq mosque in Kuwait’s capital during Friday prayers, a time when mosques are packed with worshippers. At least 27 people were killed. ISIS has posted a video of a man it claims is the suicide bomber, identifying him as Abu Suleiman al-Muwahid.

Robot kills worker

HUMAN ERROR was likely to have been to blame and not a problem with the robot at the Volkswagen plnt, said VW spokesman Heiko Hillwig. The 22-year-old victim was a member of a team setting up the stationary robot. It grabbed and crushed him against a metal plate. The man was resuscitated at the factory but died later in hospital. The Baunatal plant in Germany’s central state of Hesse produces mainly transmissions and electric motors and employs about 15,500 workers. Such robots normally operate within confined areas at the plant by grabbing auto parts and manipulating them.

Heatwave pushes temperatures over 40C (104F) SEVERAL EUROPEAN governments have issued weather warnings as the heatwave sweeps through the regions.

by Jeanette Rice WHILST IN the UK there is much debate about suffering from the 30 degree temperatures, Spain, Portugal and France have been experiences official temperatures of over 40C, whilst unofficially some thermometers have been picking up even higher readings. Heat records are already being toppled in parts of Spain. Central Madrid set a new June record high for the second day in a row and at the airport a reading showed that it was the hottest for June records since 1945. Paris, which tragically had nearly 20,000 deaths in 2003 during a heatwave, has activated its national heatwave emergency plan. Madrid city hall was advising everyone to remain hydrated by drinking at least three litres of water per day and avoiding alcohol.

Temperatures in the countryside around Córdoba in southern Spain are expected to rise to 44C (111F), if not already there. In the Andalusian capital of Seville, where temperatures reached 42C (108F), children and adults soaked their feet in city fountains while others jumped from bridges into the Guadalquivir river. Beaches across Spain’s southern coast were packed as the heatwave coincided with the start of the high season for tourism. Spain and Portugal authorities have asked all residents to be extra vigilant for forest fires as the ground is so dry, with BBQ bans being in place in most areas, and shops being ask to allow the general public in to benefit from air conditioning units where ever possible.

Chaos in Calais and Kent

AS FRENCH port workers continue to strike and migrants continue to run riot in Calais British lorry drivers in Kent were forced to beg for food and water on Wednesday because of the extreme heat. In Kent over 3,400 vehicles were stuck on the M20, whilst on the French side traffic stretched 50 miles from Calais and Dunkirk to near the Belgian border. Added to the closure of the ports the French militants moved their action to the Channel Tunnel, starting fires on the tracks and forcing the closure of rain service.

3,000 protest against gag law MORE THAN 3,000 people from dozens of local associations protested against the ‘Ley Mordaza’, Spain’s ‘Gag Law’, on Wednesday.

More than 3,000 people protest against Spain’s gagging law

by Keith Nicol The demonstration, called by the Coordinadora Anti Suppression of Murcia, had the support of more than 60 groups, associations and political organizations. The protest comes as a result of the Provincial Court dismissing a complaint against officers of the National Police. About 3,000 people joined in with the protests according to organizers, marching through Murcia, carrying banners and chanting slogans against the legislation and denouncing the harsh penalties and new limits on protests. The protests also served as a reminder about Alfon, a Madrid activist sentenced to four years in prison for a few incidents that took place during the day of the gen-

eral strike of 14th November, 2012, that protesters attributed to ‘a police set up’. A spokesperson for the organisers explained, “In our ongoing efforts to report and visualize any form of repression, during the protest, copies of a Guide to the Gag Laws were distributed, in an abbreviated handbook developed by the Coordinator Against Repression, which reports on the Causes and Consequences of what one can and cannot say, blog or write about, or protest about.” The new gagging law stops protests outside of any of Spain’s 17 regional parliaments, the National Congress and Senate with fines of up to 30,000€ for protests which ‘disrupt citizen security’.

Boat sharing with Barco Amigo

Friday July 3 - Thursday July 9 2015

Mazarrón lifesavers

The new boat sharing application; Barcoamigo

by Keith Nicol

A MURCIA entrepreneur has created the first web platform for boat sharing in Europe. ‘Barcoamigo’ is a strart-up conceived and developed at the UCAM Institute of Technology, and is a new way of sharing nautical leisure at a low cost. Barcoamigo was designed for those with the need to save, the unstoppable collaborative economy, the value of meeting new people and or the growing awareness of more sustainable consumption habits for the environment. These are just some of the ingredients that have made a Murcia entrepreneur, with support from the ITM Technological Institute of the UCAM, develop www.Barcoamigo.com, the first web platform in Europe to enable sailors to share boats for low costs. Through Barcoamigo.com and its online booking system, you can contact

owners of private boats, with people interested in practicing a leisure activity or sport, a cruise or a simple time exchange for another boat along the Spanish Costas, Balearic Archipelago and Canary Islands as well as inland areas of the peninsula. Users agree to share fuel costs that are caused by that trip, as do other collaborative platforms like Airbnb, Blablacar or Comparko, among others. The system is based on transparency and building confidence among service users. The brand uses different sources to complete the profile of the sailors, combining the opinions and assessments of other users and information about your activity on the platform. Its founder, Pedro Sanchez said; “We proposed to launch this initiative a year ago as a means for those who cannot af-

9

ford the fuel costs of his vessel.” After receiving the support, mentoring and training in relevant collaborative business models, through the ITM, Sanchez jumped into the adventure of creating the platform. Sanchez combines this activity with his profession as a teacher of Physical Education at the UCAM, along with a team of students and graduates of the institution. During the first weeks of ‘life’, more than 100 users have already used the platform ‘Barcoamigos’. The ‘app’ will be officially launched on Saturday July 4th, at 8.00pm, at the Terraza del Club Náutico de Lo Pagán (San Pedro del Pinatar); an inaugural event that will be attended by different personalities related to the world of entrepreneurship and navigation, as well as representatives of the professional sector and authorities in the area.

THE QUICK and professional actions of the emergency unit of the Mazarrón lifeguards, the Socorristas del Ayuntamiento de Mazarrón, saved the life of a 62 year old man on Wednesday. The incident took place on Playa del Rihuete where the 62-year old man was rescued, unconscious from the water. Resuscitation by the emergency team managed to managed to revive the man who then suffered a cardiac arrest. Specially trained Lifeguards from the City of Mazarrón, attached to Plan COPLA were called into action just after 12.00 noon on Wednesday after receiving a 112 phone call, which stated that a man had been rescued from the water and was unconscious by relatives. Immediately the rescue workers, located at the beginning of Playa del Rihuete rushed to the scene and began to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Moments later, he suffered cardiac arrest and the team requested the assistance of an ambulance with a life support system onboard. The rescued man was transferred by a Mobile Unit of the Emergency Health Service of Murcia. After being stabilized, the man was taken to the Santa Lucía Hospital de Cartagena.

RTN website hacked

The confirmed dates are 11th, 12th, 25th and 26th July

Continued from front page WHILST NEGOTIATIONS are still ongoing between ENAIRE, the air navigation service provider for Spain, and USCA passengers can expect similar delays to those that were experienced in the June industrial action. The confirmed dates are 11th, 12th, 25th and 26th July where air traffic workers will restrict the hours they work as they did in June. Ryanair, the budget airline, has spoken out about the strikes and launched an online petition calling for the removal of the right to strike for European air traffic controllers.

Ryanair say that when the petition, called “keep Europe’s skies open”, reaches 1 million signatures they will present it to the European commission and demand that they take action. The petition offers a second option, asking that controllers from other European countries be allowed to manage the flights over French airspace when there are strikes, which would minimise cancellations for travellers going through French airspace. Kenny Jacobs, Ryanair’s chief marketing officer, said “it is completely unacceptable

that Europe’s consumers repeatedly have their holiday and travel plans disrupted by the selfish actions of ATC unions every summer, they are using strikes as an automatic action rather than a last resort. If the EU will not listen to the airlines maybe they will listen to the people”. In response to the petition, Steve Jary, who is national secretary for aviation at the Prospect union, who represent over 3,000 UK controllers and engineers said “there not been a strike by UK traffic controllers for more than ten years and a ban is completely unnecessary”.

By Jack Troughton A CRIMINAL gang of hackers have left RTN with a ghost in the machine and problems with the paper’s popular website. Highly-skilled experts from Dragonstack are working around the clock to rectify the problem and restore the website, together with its virtual newspaper and the full email service. The organised gang of hackers based in the Far East are understood to have targeted RTN because of its high Google rating but readers may experience problems for a time. Ironically, the cyber attack comes as the paper is working on a new state of the art website which will give readers full interaction from smart phones and other mobile devices. It is hoped to have this facility available by the end of the month. RTN Managing director Danny Wilkinson apologised for the inconvenience the hackers had caused through the illicit attack. “The old website was rather old and dated. Unfortunately, that is also why it was vulnerable to this sort of attack and it has inconvenienced the thousands of visitors it receives each week,” he said. “However, we are in the process of designing and installing a new website with the Dragonstack team, based on the requirements of both our readers and advertisers. “The latest technology will give people an improved service and is mobile friendly for people using smart phones and other electronic devices.”

House prices rise THE AVERAGE price of new housing in Valencia has increased by 1.4% in the past six months. by Keith Nicol THE RESULT was published in the biannual newsletter of new housing market by the ST Evaluation Society, who have been collecting data on house sales in all provincial capitals and cities with major populations of 25,000 or more citizens during the first six months of 2015. The company, which has been making such studies since 1985, made a direct survey of more than 44,000 houses of different types corresponding to 3,050 different Real Estate developments. In this paper the changes in value are detailed in all regions, including Valencia. Thus, as stated in the study, the price of new housing in provincial capitals has increased by 1.4% in the first six months of 2015. In this period, the price increase in Valencia (2.8%) significantly boosts the price increase in the community and focuses growth nationwide. By contrast, the amount per square

meter fell in Castellon (-1.3%) who registered the only decline in house values with Alicante remaining unchanged. Valencia remains the most expensive capital of the region with 1,665€ per m2, followed by Alicante (1,324€ / m2) and Castellon (1,316€ / m2). Among the latter two, the difference is minimal. As for the populations along the Valencian coast, Torrevieja (1.4%) is the municipality that produced the biggest increases in the price of new housing, while Oropesa (-2.6%) and Benicàssim (-1.4 %) are experiencing a greater decline. Benidorm (1,774€ / m2) is the most expensive coastal location per square meter, above Benicasim (1,744€ / m2). By contrast, Oropesa (1,140 € / m2) and Torrevieja (1,186€ / m2) are the most affordable places to buy a new home. According to the report by ST Evaluation Society, the variation in prices of new housing shows that Valencia

House price in Valencia are on the rise, with Torrevieja leading the way along the coast

is positioned in line with the national trend, which has increased by 1.8% in the first half of 2015 and 1.4 % last year, resulting from a time when the market was at its highest, a drop of 38.7% in real terms. Thus, the price of the average new property in provincial capitals stands at 2,030€ / m2 built, represent-

ing 182,700 € for a house of 90 m2 average. Madrid and Catalonia are the communities that have most noticed this increase, with 4.2% and 3%, respectively. Basque Country, with 1.1%, and Aragon and Murcia, both with showed a drop in house prices, registering 1%, recorded the largest decreases.

Moan, moan, makes me groan Moan, moan, moan is all I read from expats. It makes me groan. Moaning about people smoking; moaning about the health service; moaning about noisy dogs, moaning about rude children, on and on it goes without end. We moved here in 2003 and have met a lot of lovely people in Altea. Police and the town hall have both been very good and helpful. So get a life and start to live! We go to our local, where they have a Wednesday club with entertainment most weeks and everyone is happy. They provide a lovely atmosphere and serve lovely food at good prices. All I can say is move to Altea. Let us have a happy page in your paper. If you do, you will have more letters to come. Sincerely, Huw Thomas, Altea

Lounging Around in Benidorm I’VE JUST spent 2 weeks in Benidorm whereI like to sunbathe at the beach. After paying for loungers we discovered we were not allowed to move them until the afternoon. They are now a good distance from the water and, as the beach near the water is taken up by the locals you have to squeeze past to get to the sea. As for the beach sellers, there will soon be more of them than tourists, all making plenty of tax free money. Things are getting worse and very off-putting. Instead of increasing the prices I think they should have brought the prices down. Susan Friel

Shopping hazards

WE WERE shopping at a well known supermarket on the N332 in Orihuela Costa. It is quite a challenge having to be on guard so as not to be over-charged. It sometimes feels as if we enter this supermarket at our own risk. The couple in front of us bought numerous items, and paid with their debit card. The cashier waited until they had paid, and then asked them if they wanted bags which they needed. This started the confusion. As they were putting their items in the bags, she hastily started ringing in our items, and instead of making a separate pile of our things, she pushed them together with the other customer’s items. We had to try to recover our items and try to keep watching the till as she was hastily putting things through. We have experienced this behaviour before to distract customers, and overcharge amid the confusion. During the summer with so many extra people shopping, take care the cashiers do not overcharge. It is not that I am paranoid, it is just that I do not trust anyone. John Brundell, Punta Prima

A big fish in a small fish bowl HAVING LIVED in Spain for eight years I am learning about life in urbanizations. With urbanizations there has to be a president. Some people want to be president, whilst others avoid it. Some act like a king, a legend in their own minds, or, one could say, a big fish in a small fish bowl. Whatever motivates people we can debate another day, but the important thing is to have a representative committee which has the power to make decisions along with the president, and also oblige him, or her, to respect decisions made beforehand by the assembly of owners. The president’s function is one of legal representation of the community, not arbitrary dictatorship! Much behaviour on communities is group clannishness and virtual thuggery and the victims are often minorities who just want to pay their dues and lead a quiet life. Dave Davenish, Villajoyosa

Hundreds of thousands leave Spain as consumer spending increases FIGURES JUST released show that hundreds of thousands are abandoning Spain to look for work in other countries, yet another report shows that consumer spending has risen. by Jeanette Rice CONFLICTING REPORTS, some may say, have been released detailing Spain’s population and consumer spending. The first report states that the population of Spain dropped again for the third year in a row as hundreds of thousands left to look for work elsewhere. Whilst the government has admitted the drop in population, many groups representing Spanish migrants have accused the authorities of vastly underplaying the scale of emigration for political reasons, and one group, Marea Granate, suggest that the official figures could be multiplied by ten. The group stated that as an example 50,260 Spaniards registered for a National Insurance number in the UK for 2014,whereas the official figures state that on 9,797 Spaniards went to the UK, and there were similar figures for Germany. Spain has the second highest unemployment rate (24.8%) of Europe with Greece taking top place, and although the economy has grown by 1.4% in the last year it seems to have had no effect on the employment figures. The consumer spending figures, however, showed yet another rise, the 13th month out of 14. One of the figures taken into account showed that there had been an increase of 6.4% in spending at fuel stations, giving an overall increase in consumer spending of 3.4% compared to the same time last year.

More in the United States speak Spanish than in Spain

A REPORTS findings say that by 2050 the United States will have the largest Spanish speaking population in the world. Overtaking major Spanish speaking nations such as Spain and Colombia, the United States is home to 41 million native Spanish speakers and an additional 11.6 million who are bilingual. The census also found that Spanish is the third most used language on the Internet, following Chinese and English. The release of the report coincides with millionaire Donald Trump making inflammatory statements about Mexican immigrants in the United States, resulting in him being fired from the television channel that he worked for, and no doubt seriously damaging his chances as Republican presidential candidate.

Sánchez government starts Sunday PARTIDO POPULAR leader Pedro Antonio Sánchez became the sixth democratic president of the Community of Murcia on Sunday with promises to act “with exemplary loyalty” backed by his Executive. by Keith Nicol The votes of the four members of Ciudadanos give him an absolute majority in parliament and he was elected on the first ballot. Pedro Antonio Sanchez Lopez, 39 years old, is a native of Puerto Lumbreras, a graduate in political science from the University of Granada and a married father of two girls. From the age of 23 years he has held such positions as managing director, mayor, councillor and this week became president of the Community. Pedro Antonio Sánchez raised the number of votes required for his investiture thanks to the support that the four Ciudadanos, who added their votes to the 22 parliamentarians of the PP to reach the absolute majority needed on the first ballot. PSOE and Podemos (19 deputies between them) voted against. Pedro Antonio thus becomes the sixth president of the democratic history of the region after Andrés Hernández Ros, Carlos Collado Mena, Maria Antonia Martinez (the three all PSOE), Ramón Luis Valcárcel and for just one year in office, Alberto Garre (both PP). The president-elect takes over the office of President this evening, Friday at

7.00pm. , Garre remains chief executive in office. The swearing in will take place on Friday at 7.00pm at the Palacio de San Esteban, which is traditionally celebrated in what is interpreted as a gesture to the legislature. This year is very significant as for the first time in the history of the region, the ruling party will need the support of other groups to take forward their initiatives in Parliament. The Executive will take office on Sunday and take the first decisions on Monday, July 6th. “The best is always yet to come,” ventured the new president, who noted that “ these are times of opportunity” for Murcia. “My goal is that the economic recovery reaches everyone and does not just remain in the news. I will not rest until Murcia is going in the right way”, said Pedro Antonio. In his first contact with the media as president-elect, he recalled the first time he visited the Assembly, as a child, he took the hand of the former deputy Juan Vicente Navarro. “I came here with admiration. Today (Sunday), I was elected president of all Murcia and look at us with the same respect that I had as a boy”.

First National Animal Welfare Conference In Murcia THE PAES National Animal Welfare Conference at the Costa Narejos Hotel, Los Alcázares, Murcia 16-18 October 2015 is believed to be the first of its kind in Spain. Three animal welfare organisations from Murcia and Almeria: ACTIN, San Animal and Cruz Azul, are collaborating on the PAES (Protección Animales España) Project which is creating great initiatives and programmes, including the National Animal Welfare Conference. The conference is aimed at those who would like to learn more about running their own Trap, Neuter and Return campaigns; volunteers involved in shelters, sanctuaries, rescue groups and foster pet parents, as well as anyone who loves animals and wants to get involved. Delegates will learn about lifesaving changes taking place across the country and take those ideas back to pets in shelters, and with rescue groups, in their home towns. “Our mission is to encourage co-operation and exchange of ideas” said Lyn Baines, Conference Manager. “We will launch the PAES Project at the conference and we have some exceptional speakers.” The best-of-the-best experts will share their ideas and expertise: leaders of the no-kill movement, experts in animal care and behaviour, marketing and fundraising experts, professionals from private and public animal welfare organisations, and more. “We know how hard it is to run an animal welfare charity, so we have kept the registration donations as low as possible, to engage as many people as possible.” commented Lyn. Find out more about the conference itinerary and how to register by visiting their website: www.proteccionanimales.es or by emailing conf@ proteccionanimales.es PAES (Protección Animales España) has been developed by the ACTIN Association to bring together associations, protectoras, animalistas, government, authorities and professionals or companies interested in animal welfare to make a real difference to the welfare and treatment of animals in Spain. “Our aim is to provide a Legal Group, Veterinarian Group and, eventually, our own Rescue Centre, to co-ordinate fostering with the various local rescue charities. This will enable us to monitor dogs and pass them as fit, before they are released to foster homes and, eventually, their forever homes.”

¡Este año SÍ!

The management team believe that this season ‘¡Este año SÍ!’

by Keith Nicol THE SUMMER holidays are almost over for the majority of both professional and lower league players in Spain. On Monday July 13th training starts at CD Torrevieja to ready themselves for the push for promotion begins in earnest at the end of August. Under the slogan ‘Este año Si’, loosely translated into ‘This year yes’, the management team are building what they see as promotion contenders for the 2015/16 campaign although details of players will remain largely unannounced until mid August due to issues with other teams in local leagues. At a Press Conference on Tuesday, four different areas were discussed: the 200 Club; Season Tickets: Club Merchandising and Players. In the past, the 200 Club has proved to be a popular fund raising activity for local business and associations to show their support for the club, for very little outlay with a basic return on their money. For just 200€ Companies are entered into a draw on August 20th involving all participants, with the winning ticket drawn becoming one of CD Torrevieja’s main sponsors for the season by having their name across the front of the players home and away playing shirts. The initiative began at the end of the press conference with the registration of the company PINADA BLINDS, as owner Gordon became the first participant in the scheme. But unlike most draws and raffles, participants actually do receive something for showing their support to the club as each one taking part will also receive two season tickets for CD Torrevieja’s Home games, a value of 200€, which they can use, sell, raffle off or give to their special clients. Season ticket prices have remained unchanged; 125€ for the covered stand and100€ for general admission. On the day, general admission is 10€, covered stand 15€, those 16 to 25 years old just 5€ and under 16 free.

A full range of merchandising will soon be available, with the club looking at different options of kit manufacturers. Shirts will be 25€, representing excellent value, with polo shirts, hats, caps, and speciality items such as mugs and personalised items also available. Most items and especially season tickets will be available from the Torry Army Supports Club HQ in La Siesta or at the Vicente Garcia Stadium at pre-season friendly matches and home games. The club shop will also be open on 11.30am to 1.30pm and Thursdays from 5.00pm to 7.00pm. The schedule for friendly games starts on 18th July against Cordoba, just relegated from La Liga, Steve Bruce and his team from Hull City who visit the Vicente Garcia on 24th July and Hercules on August 1st. Depending on schedules, games are also possible against Real Murcia, Elche or Cartagena. As for the sporting side: Coach Antonio Pedroza made an interesting review of how he is focusing on the new computer technology to discover more about players who are available for renewals, transfer, preseason, etc. Although half a dozen players have been contracted already, he is trying to attract 2B quality players to the club for the push for promotion. However, many ‘available’ players are waiting to find out their own future. Real Murcia are in danger of closing their doors and having emergency talks this week: Cartagena owe around five million in taxes and could be relegated for financial irregularities and Elche are still uncertain of their future, as although it seems that their debt has been paid or a plan of action is in place, their relegation from La Liga is under appeal and their future division remains uncertain. But for CD Torrevieja, the call is “¡Este año SÍ!”, just don’t forget to write or pronounce the ‘ñ’ when doing so.

Spain’s private rentals outnumber hotel rooms

A REPORT published has stated that the number of privately rented holiday homes in Spain now outnumbers rooms offered by traditional hotels. by Jeanette Rice

THE REPORT, published by the Spanish tourism association Exceltur, was carried out by an audit firm and cited such internet sites Airbnb and similar companies as the basis for their findings. Airbnb, a company founded in 2008 is one of many in a fast growing market where it connects people with accommodation, with owners able to list their rooms for rent as well as for others to search. These included a week in a castle, villas or apartments for one night, and cover 34,000 cities in 190 countries. The report found that at the end of 2014 there were 2.7 million beds on offer by the internet sites compared with 2.4 million spaces in hotels and regulated lodgings. Exceltur, made up of major hotel chains and airlines, are concerned that this growth in the private rental market does not operate on a level playing field and warned that the state could be losing up to 432 million euros a year in undeclared earnings. A spokesperson for Airbnb said that “it was company policy to remind all those using the site to declare any income and any other taxes that they may be liable for”. Ada Colau, mayor for Barcelona, has spoken out about the issue and said that ”there is justification to prohibit any new tourist accommodation bearing in mind that 64 % of beds in Barcelona are provided by private rentals”. With the rise in foreign visitors to the country last year being an all time record of 65 million, and contributing 10.9% of the GDP, Spain’s tourism industry plays a key role in helping the country pull out of the current economic crisis.

Jeremy Clarkson in trouble with the Spanish By Jeanette Rice IN TRUE Jeremy Clarkson style, an article he published in the Sunday Times has caused uproar throughout Spain. Clarkson, renowned for his outspoken views, was discussing the SEAT, produced in Spain when he made several offensive statements regarding not only the car but the people of Spain. Referring to the Spanish as “a bunch of people who a week ago were shooting each other and stabbing cows”, Clarkson was discussing the SEAT although admitting that he had never driven one nor had any desire to so. He went on to write that SEAT had only come into existence because Franco wanted to charge import duties on cars and take Spain out of being a third world country. Motospain, an online forum for vehicles

suggests that Mr Clarkson enjoys feeding his extremely large ego by offending others and making outrageous statements, and that the Spanish should simply ignore the comments. Jeremy Clarkson continued with his flurry of insults saying “who would want to buy this thing? Why on earth would you buy something made by a Spaniard, who are only good a fishing in Cornwall, when you can buy a superior car made by the Germans, and that isn’t brown!” With calls for the ambassador of Spain in the UK to intervene and seek an apology, which readers who know Jeremy Clarkson reputation will understand is highly unlikely, the journalist has alienated yet another group of people. It is worth noting that Spain is now the eighth largest producer of cars in the world, ahead of the United Kingdom.

Los Alcázares takes to the air by Keith Nicol

LAST WEEKEND thousands of people thronged the beaches of Los Alcázares to watch the Sky Festival, commemorating the centenary of the aerodrome of Los Alcázares. The festival attracted acrobatic aircraft, seaplanes to celebrate the centenary of such, national and international aircraft plus military and civilian aeronautic displays. The beach started to attract the crowds early on Sunday with latecomers having no choice but to take their place knee deep in the warm waters of the Mar Menor, or watch from further back in their cars. As the loudspeakers announced the launch of the first plane, thousands of heads looked upward in unison. Then, as if on cue or a director calling ‘action’, arms were raised in unison as hundreds of phones and tablets captured the action and in an instant the event was shared worldwide on social networks. Celebrating the centenary of the seaplane and the very reason the aerodrome has been in existence since 1915, one of the stars of the show was a yellow seaplane, used mainly to douse forest fires, that landed and took off again,

Do you feel part of Europe? I have recently returned from a trip to Sorrento, Capri and Naples. by

Jennifer Cunningham

What an incredible country Italy is, extremely beautiful, very green and with many old and attractive houses. This part made it very different from Spain, as on the hills and mountains they are all very modern buildings and it was a joy to see the difference it made. The sea all around this area is dotted with yachts, sailing boats and motor cruisers, both large and small, which made the sea come alive. I was on a coach trip most days visiting different parts of the area which was quite awesome, because it was often travelling on the sides of mountains, with spectacular views. The downside was the amount of traffic, it was just endless. I always thought the Spanish were fast and crazy drivers –no, the Italians take the prize. However, I had nothing but admiration for the skill and patience of the bus drivers. This area of Italy is overlooked by a volcano, Mount Vesuvius, and it seems to be just sitting there watching and waiting. The general chatter from the locals is that they are expecting an eruption within the next 10 years. Having seen the devastating effect it has had on the area in the past, when I visited Pompeii, which was not only magnificent, it was a very surreal experience, I think I would be terrified of living in its path. If you are thinking of visiting this beautiful part of Europe, take plenty of euros with you, as it is very expensive. One pint of beer cost €10! Whilst in Italy, it gave me cause for reflection on how lucky we are to live in Europe. There is such beauty, culture, diversity of languages and history

and I heard many comments, saying how lucky to be born a European. Although you can guarantee wonderful weather when travelling further afield, I feel that Europe has so much to offer that I look forward to discovering and appreciating it more in the future. With the referendum looming over us, I sincerely hope that it will be yes to staying in the EU. If it turns out to be NO, then all of us ex pats will be in for a rocky ride regarding our status. Why there are people advocating that we remove ourselves and return to a totally independent country, after so many years of being such an important part of the development and unity of Europe, I don´t understand. There is no way we can turn back in time successfully. The whole reason for Europe was peace, strength, unity, trade, economic growth, and combined defence, which is so essential with the possibility of Russia returning to a cold war situation, how does the UK think it can defend itself? It will just be a little dot on the globe. I, along with others feel there should be some changes within the EU – too many regulations and some of the rules are ridiculous, like the straight cucumbers, whilst others are not applicable to all countries, for example two sections in the UK are the justice system and the financial industry which, in comparison with other countries are already extremely efficient. I admire David Cameron for doing just what he promised in trying to bring some vital changes, especially with regard to immigration. Whether the powerful men and women in the European parliament will have enough vision

to agree to changes – who knows? The EU needs the UK for its stability, democracy, vast experience and its bloody mindedness. So let’s hope that the CBI, government and other powerful bodies persuade the no voters and don´t knows, into understanding the benefits as well as the down sides and maybe for the first time a miracle will happen and the British public will see themselves as Europeans and lose their isolationist attitude. For those of us living in Spain and elsewhere in the world, you realise that as an island it is not difficult to understand how many feel that they are not part of Europe, whilst some would prefer to go back in history. Would I want to be anything other than English? No, but I feel that now I am also a European. I am aware that this article is far removed from my normal sound advice and information, but living and working in another European country I am more aware of the strengths and weaknesses of both the UK and the EU. I feel very passionate that having a birth right of living and working in a very stable, hardworking Europe there are, of course, many thousands if not millions who would love to live amongst us. You only have to look at the news every day to see the despair and tragedy of babies, children and adults in other parts of the world, to understand why often their mission in life is to come to Europe, but especially the UK. I am proud to be English first, British second and then European.

What can you do if the tax man asks for extra Transfer Tax on the purchase of your property? THE TAXMAN ( in this case the regional Oficina Liquidadora), is able to review the transfer tax paid on a purchase, and ask the purchasers to pay a Complementary Tax Liquidation, if they believe that the value declared on the deed is lower than the one considered as the minimum acceptable market value of your property. This liquidation could be appealed within one month by means of a (Recurso de Reposicion) Reposition Appeal or by means of an EconomicAdministrative Claim (Reclamacion EconomicoAdministrativa). In these kind of court cases, there has been a change in the Court’s decision, at least in the Community of Valencia, following court order number 1336/2013 by the Contentious-Administrative Section of the High Court of the Valencian Community ( TSJ). This court order understands that the method used by the Tax Office to review and re-evaluate the prices and values declared on the notarial deeds “escrituras” of purchases, gifts and inheritances, is not adequate, as it is based on the values and information provided by the land registry, catastro, etc. The TSJ states that these values could be used as guidance, but the there still needs to be an individual inspection, inspectors must personally visit or check the properties one by one, which normally they do not do. To prevent possible problems with the taxman, and before signing any deed of purchase, gift, inheritance, or any deed of any kind where there

is a valuation of a property, it is very important to confirm and check if the value declared is over the minimum tax value accepted by the taxman. These minimum acceptable tax values are published every year by the tax authorities, and it is based on the cadastral value multiplied by a coefficient which changes depending on the municipality, etc. Also, if the property that you are buying is not in good condition, it is crucial to keep evidence that justifies why the value¡ declared is lower, i.e: photographs of the property, invoices for the renovations and the reparations done, etc. Therefore, if you receive a letter from CONSELLERÍA reviewing the tax paid, because they understand that the real market value is higher than the value declared on your purchase, gift or inheritance deed……. before paying it, let us know. And also before signing a deed, first confirm the minimum acceptable value for the taxman. The information

Are the banks robust enough to survive a grexit

THE WORLD will be unable to cope with the next financial crisis because interest rates have been kept low for too long, the Bank of International Settlements has warned. Years of reduced rates have left banks with no new ammunition to manage another crash, the so-called central bankers’ bank said in its annual report. The Swiss-based bank claimed central banks have become stuck in a rut of low interest rates that have made debt too cheap and not helped combat issues such as low productivity in the world’s economies. BIS claimed low interest rates are an inefficient way to spend capital because it has fuelled high risk-taking in the financial markets and increased debts because money has been so cheap. It has led to a boom and bust model with weak growth in the real economy. Greece on Tuesday became the first advanced economy to default on an International Monetary

Fund loan after the government in Athens broke off talks with its creditors and shut down banks. Well if this was a game of poker the Greek government appears to be playing the biggest bluff with all their chips, car keys and houses on the table. While all Banks in Europe and the UK guarantee your money up to €100,000/£85,000 if held in a current or deposit account, as we have seen in the Cyprus crisis and now the Greek one, people can’t go to the bank and get their money no matter what the guarantee. They only have what is literally under the mattress. This Wednesday the Bank of England said it stood ready to take any action required in response to Greece’s worsening debt crisis, which could trigger wider problems on financial markets. Financial instability could result in a lack of liquidity

that makes it harder for banks, companies and households to borrow, the BoE said. What does this mean for YOU: For those of you looking at buying euros this may offer you a good opportunity or two. For those of us with investments it could be quite volatile times, but the best advice in most cases is to sit tight and ride it out, knee jerk reactions will result in loss. For those of us with money sitting in banks we may well want to think about the amount of cash we hold and where we hold it. Ensure you grow and eat some garden vitamins

FOR YEARS now we have read numerous advertisements and articles attempting to persuade us to buy vitamin and essential mineral supplement pills . But it could well be better to eat the vitamins and minerals as nature intended them by growing and eating them in the form of a diverse mix of fruit and vegetables that are known to contain the main vitamins we apparently need for continuous good health or for recovery if ill. Interestingly the labels on some bottles of vitamin pills include the note Not intended as a substitute for a balanced diet. Further heath authorities worldwide have been recommending that we eat at least five to nine portions of fruit and vegetables a day for their vitamin and mineral contents. Others emphasise that mass produced vegetables in land short of beneficial trace elements can be short of a natural balance; that fruit and vegetables are at their best if harvested daily and eaten fresh and grown ecologically/organically without the use of chemical fertilizers insecticides fungicide; while the Slow Food movement recommends that we should try and eat local produce to sustain the local economy. But the future seems to be driven towards genetically modified vegetables that are resistant to weed killers and the training of agronomists trained to carve out financially secure careers with the agrochemical giants such as Monsanto. Some years ago I was asked to give a Slow Food Organisation talk to agronomist students at the Valencia Polytechnic University based on our book ‘Growing Healthy Vegetables in Spain’. When I got to the part of the talk about the possibilities of students growing healthy vegetables in containers on apartment terraces I was askedby a professor to not talk about that as agronomists and not

agriculturalists were being trained! Agronomists who would control what was grown according to agrochemical standards but not actually grow things. I found the attitude rather narrow minded especially as the students had just watched a film about the need to eat better and were generally short of money. Fortunately many of our readers wish to eat healthier and see the sense of achieving the recommendations for better eating by growing some of their own in seed sprouters in the kitchen, containers on apartment terraces, in raised beds in small gardens, in a garden plot or if convenient an allotment/huerto. The great advantages are that you can focus on growing those fruits and vegetables with the greatest beneficial vitamin and mineral contents and harvest each day just what is required for each meal or day. The book ‘Living well from our garden Mediterranean ‘ describes our progress in eating well, physically mentally gastronomically and economically, from our garden in parallel with our valley using more and more chemicals and then almost totally abandoning fruit and vegetable growing. Whatever you select to grow ensure you include antioxidant vitamin/mineral rich foods. We ensure that we grow plenty of dark green leaves, parsley, red lettuces, sprouting broccoli, tomatoes, nasturtium flowers and leaves, garlic, onions, tomatoes, radishes , beetroots and carrots. As for fruit it is possible to harvest something healthy on every day of the year to give seasonal diversity ranging from vitamin C packed lemons all the year round, mandarins and oranges from November to May, raspberries from May to

Twenty vegetables growing on a three square metre terrace

November, The Furniture figs and Store grapes during August and September and strawberries throughout the summer etc. vitamin packed kiwinos, which are like mini kiwis but growing in small bunches a little like grapes for a summer crop and even goji berries can be grown from plants propagated from a few berries taken from a bag of dried berries purchased in a local market. Most importantly you don’t need large areas of good soil to make major contributions to your daily diet.

WITH A background in family and matrimonial mediation, Life Coach Sara Bell helps Readers with their daily worries. If you are having difficulties with relationships, family, work or any other aspect of your life, then help is at hand.

Very possessive MY HUSBAND is very possessive. We married one year ago, and there was no sign of this behaviour before we moved in together. Now he says he doesn’t want me going out with friends, or to go out to work. He says it’s other people he doesn’t trust, not me. He also tries to tell me what clothes to wear. I have battled against this, but he doesn’t seem to see his actions are now affecting my feelings for him. Your husband’s behaviour is having an adverse effect on your marriage, and that is not good, especially as the marriage is very new. There is normally a deep-rooted reason for possessive behaviour - a troubled childhood or insecurity of some kind. Have his parents had a good marriage? If there has been infidelities, then that might be the reason your husband is having issues with trust in his own marriage. If you are able to get him to go along to some counselling sessions, this will help.

Write to Sara in confidence. A pseudonym will be used if you wish. Sara reads all letters and can give a personal reply. Email your question to agonyaunt@roundtownnews.com or Sara is available for private consultations, telephone 633 614 476.

Jealous cousin MY FIANCÉ and I booked our wedding for June. After hearing this, his female cousin then booked hers the week before ours, to a guy, she had only just met. In the end, her wedding didn’t happen. Over time though, we have noticed that she copies a lot of what we do, and at family parties, she and her partner’s behaviour towards us has become very competitive, bordering on spiteful. It is difficult to understand why some people feel the need for oneupmanship. Your husband’s cousin may be feeling envious of your life, and want the same things. Envy is a natural emotion, and it can sometimes be viewed as being a compliment when someone copies you. The trouble starts when these feelings turn to jealousy, and then becomes spiteful. One solution might be to not spend as much time with these people in the future. But, if you have no choice keep conversation to a minimum when you do meet, don’t be alone with them, talk generally in a group, and remember it’s their problem.

 It is elements brought about by the actions of Mars and Neptune this week that bring things closer to a head. However you have to consider that although you know the truth of the situation it is set to cause some bad reactions and hurt to those who do not deserve it. They say don’t shoot the messenger, but this is not the right time! Saturn brushes up to Mercury and here wisdom and knowledge are the prized ingredients of something that needs your tender love and care to see it safely through. It is time that discussion and planning take the place of conjecture and supposition. Use current openness of communication to help entice the very best deal going. Mercury embraces Venus midweek and this should make you feel very centred and determined to see something through to the bitter end. Though you have insisted all along that this is your responsibility, it isn’t and the very best of opportunities is coming into place as Ceres finally calls time and helps you to shoulder the burden. It is a take on with Mercury that gives you the strength that you need right now. It has been a tough time but you have to know that things are about to get very much better all around. The Moon’s current phase helps to illuminate a clear way forward, and you seem to have the inner strength and confidence that you need to move on. The Sun is in opposition to Pluto. Conflict may be a problem since your determination has been misconstrued and is currently interfering in a relationship issue. Since your wants and needs are so very close, it is only a different interpretation that holds you back; and your aims are both sincere and embracing. Time to kiss and make up! Mars trines with Neptune, planetary leader of your opposing sign of Pisces. It would seem that you are becoming more intune with your specific psychic energies. You have started a healthy eating plan and seem to have more energy and more stamina right now. All is in place to make any changes you would wish for now, for the future. Venus sextiles Mercury, and this has the effect of stimulating your literary skills. You are calm and patient and in a reflective mood, but rather than waiting for things to happen go out and get what you really want. The deeply resourceful abilities of Mercury underline your skills, so maybe it is time to put your true feelings into words? The Mercury sextile of Jupiter allows you freedom of expression as you have the time to concentrate on new studies and to start new projects, previously shelved. Time spent on yourself right now is indeed quality time; as you begin to discover that there is something you should or could be doing. Follow the dream.. just go for it! Jupiter appears to have some plan in mind for you. This may be comforting, but there are many loose ends that need to be dealt with right now, and you are not the person to just let things go. For this reason your scheduling is out and your decisions are being questioned, in a process that is going to bring you benefits in the end. Mars interacts with Ceres, and calls time on something you have been waiting for. Knowing the right time to act is crucial to your current plans, but you have to commit too. Your needs have altered and your aim was to try to bring everyone together. However it is vital that you put yourself first because you deserve to succeed this time. Eliminate the past when you think of the future because better, more stable times are ahead, and you have plans to make. Uranus, your trusty planetary leader, bodes that you strike a balance, but not a compromise in the current situation. Do nothing that you would live to regret, but also do not let anyone get the better of you right now. Mars brings negative energies but these can make you feel all the more determined to make a project work, and work well for you. You are multi talented but sometimes you do not accept the compliments others want to shower you with. Your artistic energies are stimulated and may well take you to new depths if you believe in you!

If It’s Your Birthday This Week

Planetary aspects involve re-tracing your steps and going back to complete unfinished business. The delay gives you time to best plan the way ahead and only then will you do what you know you have to!

TERRORISM NEVER seems to leave the headlines these days. The recent attack on a Tunisian beach by a radicalised extremist has left a soaring death toll, and a Country that relies on tourism, and does it very well, facing lean times and suffering ahead. My heart goes out to all those who have lost loved ones. You save up for a holiday, and it is unthinkable that something so terrible as this brutal set of executions is set to wreak havoc once more. One very beautiful young lady had escaped the rain of bullets on the beach only to be exploded by a hand grenade in the foyer of the Hotel she was staying in, as she desperately sought sanctuary. Of course terrorism is nothing new. I was working in Harrods in the 1970s when an IRA bomb exploded just below me on the ground floor Food Hall. I will never forget that low bass rumble as the building shook and people just ran everywhere in sheer panic, screaming. Imagine then what it must have been like to be sunning yourself on the beach one minute and running for your life the next as the bullets fly around you. The newsreel showed a paperback book smeared with blood amongst the scattered remains of what was the idyllic setting for a well deserved happy beach holiday break. Terrorism is making everybody increasingly very angry but it also serves to make us more determined not to give in to it. No cause in the World could ever justify senseless and needless killing to promote its ideals Terrorism has shaped the way that we behave in Airports. For years we have had to bag up our mere scrapings of liquids, remove our belts and watches and have our shoes x rayed. We are subjected now and again to an intimate pat down and treated sometimes as if we were criminals as we mistakenly turn up at Security with a bottle of water. I feel safer that this security screening allows me to travel safe; obviously you never know when a disaster can strike. Of course terrorism works on fear. I’d like to bet bookings for North Africa, in general, will take a serious dip. Terrorism can happen at any time. Wars in the past were full on and declared as a state of being, whilst with terrorism it is the unknown and the subsequent fear that has the maximum effect. Fear stops everything and anything good from happening. If you fear it, whatever it is, you cannot enjoy it! I am faced very often with fearful people who are worried and fearful about meeting me. For the fearful I am that person who could know something about the past. I become that someone who could be able to see and judge such relevant actions of the past. Could is the operative word, since though I probably could, I would not want to. I never have the need to judge anyone. When fear subsides then there comes a time to enjoy the connections that are my enablement with Spirit. Fearing that the dead are being disturbed is another factor. Since I send the message out to the Spirit World, and support the subsequent two way communication to enable messages to be passed from the dead to the living. Writing about it and talking about this connection can promote fear, so it is one of those things you just have to experience to know that fear with Spirit is not necessary, and that it can be eliminated, totally. Sadly acts of Worldwide terrorism are the unexpected, the unknown, and are calculated to destroy, distress and implant fear. There is no sympathy in the main for the cause, but destruction of life and fanatical publicity of the cause are the goals of the deluded, and they always will be. I know that you will want to join me in sending a message of support and love to all those who are currently suffering as a result of terrorism. It’s the Spiritual way to work with love as our agenda is to connect and educate through loving care, and it always will be, have no fear!

KENNY, YOU advised me that I must give my dear departed husband time to find his place before we sit together, as a family, to make contact with him. Just this week I have been smelling his pipe tobacco and felt very close to him for the first time, but today a photo of him fell down on a table. Are these the signs you said to look for? Gaby M. Gaby.... yes you seem to have clearance to make that contact you need to. Get the family together and go for it. Your partner is making his decisions right now and it would seem that he has sent messages that the time is right. I do hope he doesn’t disappoint you, and please call me to let me know when you are scheduling your special event.

River cruise

SMALL AND elegant on board, River Cruise ships offer some of the best opportunities to visit the very heart of cities located on some of the world’s most beautiful rivers. WITH CAPACITY for around 200 passengers on board, you will never feel cramped in these state of the art ships, with beautiful panoramic windows offering unrivalled views of the countryside as your cruise meanders down it´s path. Not strictly for adults only, equally, this type of cruise is aimed at a more mature market, demonstrated by the type of activities and entertainment offered on board – typically these will include cooking demonstrations, enriching talks, or taking advantage of the well stocked library and luscious relaxing areas to simply curl up and relax. Attention to detail is key

Marksburg Castle

on these holidays. The itineraries are planned out in minute detail, to offer you the very best of your chosen destinations. You can choose to depart from the UK, with flights and transfers included in your price, or travel direct from Alicante to your destination, which also offers you the possibility of extending your holiday at either side of the cruise. River cruising offers a different location every day to explore, and returning to your own cabin in the evening – a hotel on the river, with all the inclusions that you would expect to find in a 4* or 5* hotel. River cruises are full board, so breakfast, lunch and dinner are included, but also wine, beer and soft drinks at your lunch and dinner also. Many excursions are included in you cruise, as are cultural demonstrations, events and performances as part of your entertainment. Wifi, so often a costly expense on the larger ocean cruises, is also included in your price. But what about the destinations? Where do these cruises go? Well, amongst the most popular are the Danube – running the length

The Black Forest

from Nuremberg in Germany to Bucharest in Romania. A cruise along this route offers the unmissable opportunities to visit Vienna, Budapest, Belgrade and finishing in Budapest. Or how about the Rhine, starting in Amsterdam and visiting Cologne, Marksburg Castle, Heidelberg, Strasbourg and the Black Forest, home of fairytales, cuckoo clocks, waterfalls and spectacular scenery. These routes can even be combined to a 15 day journey. For art lovers, the itineraries of the ‘Waterways of the Tsars’ ‘Paris and the Heart of Normandy’ and the Danube Waltz are perfect. For city lovers, The Elbe, The Danube, The Rhine, Eastern Europe and China are unbeatable. The choices are plentiful, 8 day holidays up to 15 days, many programmed to coincide with festivals taking place in the locality (Tulips of Amsterdam, Christmas German Markets & more). Many cruises run from March to December, and Christmas is on sale now for 2015 & 2016. So, literally, don´t miss the boat!

Sean Coming Clean as Only he Can!

IN 1986 Sean Penn was nominated for a Golden Raspberry for Worst Actor in movie Shanghai Surprise, but that didn´t stop Madonna from marrying him the following year at a time when she was at the peak of her powers having had six number 1´s in America, and similar in all other record buying countries of the world. Their marriage lasted just two years after which Madge carried on her relentless pursuit of big singles and albums, but it was 1993 before Penn had the merest scratch of interest in his work being nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in Carlito´s way. He won a Cannes Film Festival Best Actor award in 1997 and his career has gone from strength to strength since with Academy Awards in 2003 and 2009 the main highlights. The media coverage of his time with Madonna was always front page stuff, mostly because of Penn´s open honesty about their personal life, and he was still in open mode last Thursday in L A saying “She was a phenomenon, and I would describe that marriage as loud, that’s how I remember it, I don’t recall having a single conversation in four years together.” Yep! That’s pretty open ´n honest!! Sean said all of this on the back of having been reminded by the reporter that he was cited for his abusive nature and issues with alcohol in Madonna´s divorce papers, bog standard high profile break stuff I´m sure you´ll agree. Interestingly Sean was in L A to see his ex-wife in concert, and finished off his interview by saying “I’ve talked to her a few times since, and there’s a whole person there, I just didn’t know it.” Refreshingly honest from Sean yet again!

“Quote of the Week

Chris Evans mother Alma after he gave a measly 40p tip to a cabbie ‘That’s it, the ginger p****! I ain’t watching no more of his shows.’ Love you Alma! PRINCE WILLIAM might well be trouble with Buck House after the story that´s gone viral concerning his son Prince George and a pair of CrocBrand shoes. Wee Georgie was snapped recently at the Beaufort Polo Club wearing the aforementioned footwear, after which the sales increased by 1,500%. Prince George is not two until July 22nd and already he´s a fashion icon! IN THE business of writing, when two guys work well together they should do all they can to keep the status quo. I reported last year that Ricky Gervais was making a spin-off movie about ´The Office´ manager David Brent, and it´s going to happen, only Ricky’s writing partner Stephen Merchant won’t be part of the project. Don’t do it Ricky! Don’t do it mate!

Video of the Week! A double header for you this week!! Have a good old chuckle at Singing Giraffe Man! and be amazed at Animal Sound Man!

GEMMA COLLINS is leaving The Only Way is Essex saying she needs a break from the show. It’s about a fight she had with Vas during filming in Marbella and reading between the lines the burning question is ´did she fall or was she pushed?´ With Gemma having whistled a glass of champers in the direction of the bosses on the day, I know what I´ve got my money on.

FAMOUS FOLK’S offspring can get doors opened that most people spend a lifetime banging a hole in. It can be argued that any parent would do the same, but when it comes to creative talent nothing is guaranteed. Patrick Schwarzenegger has a lead role in movie ´Midnight Sun´ and might well be hoping I´m right as his father only talent was a mess o´ muscles!

Free Windows 10 DEAR AUNTY, I HAVE noticed recently an icon on my laptop ‘Free Windows 10’. When I click onto this it is offering until July 29th a free complete version of Windows 10. Is this really a free version and is it safe to download it when it becomes available? What are your thoughts on this, I await your reply. Thanks for a great page. Andrea Aunty says: Yes it is a free Windows 10. Most users of W7 and W8 will be able to get the free upgrade to W10. By completing the notification, you have reserved your copy for when W10 is made available to you, currently scheduled for 29th July. It will then be downloaded to your PC,

and then you will be asked if and when you want to install it. There are bound to be some incompatibility issues and so you should really do some preparation prior to installation. Back up, on a separate external hard drive or pen-drive, any or all documents,

pictures, videos that you have on your PC. It may also be wise to ensure you have your W7/8 back up installation disks, so if anything does go wrong with the W10 installation, you can use those disks to ensure you have a version of windows on your PC.

Mouse problem DEAR AUNTY VIRUS, I’m having a problem with all of my word processing programmes (open office, notepad, email “compose”) because the text entry cursor haphazardly jumps back randomly into the previous text, so that if I´m not watching the screen, I have to keep cutting & pasting back to the end. I have tried uninstalling open office and reinstalling, but it made no difference. Any suggestions? Les Aunty says: I think this is more a mouse / keyboard issue rather than a software issue. You do not say if you are using a laptop or not, but sometimes the mouse pad can be very sensitive. Or it could mean your mouse and keyboard drivers are not working correctly. If you think this may be the case, uninstall the mouse drivers and reboot the PC, and it should reload the drivers, and hopefully solve the problem.

List of other prefixes THIS SUBJECT of prefixes is beginning to take me over. AFTER LIMITING myself to two of them last week, and only choosing very few examples of each, I have now discovered that there are approximately sixty prefixes altogether, most of them Latin in origin, but quite a few Greek, and a nice little clump of them are in a different category called “prepositional”. And that’s not to mention suffixes, which are the bits you add onto the ends of words. There are forty four of them, at the last count. So I’ve decided to pick out a few of the more common prefixes and list them, along with their meanings and an example or two, on the understanding that those of you who are interested, will discover more for yourself, and those who aren’t can just skip through to the end! Here we go. Ante = in front of Antepasado = ancestor Anti = against Anticonceptivo = contraceptive (lit. against conception) Bi / bis = two. Bisabuelo = great grandfather (lit. twice grandfather) Entre = between Entresemana = mid-week Extra = outside Extraordinario = extraordinary (lit. outside the ordinary) i = negation ireal = unreal, ilegal = illegal menos/minus = less menospreciar = to scorn/despise (lit. undervalue) pos / post = after posponer = to postpone (lit. to put after)

pre = before preocupar = to worry (lit. to occupy ones attention before an event) pro = forward progreso = progress (lit. moving forward) re = repetition repasar = to revise (lit. to pass by again) sin = without sinvergüenza = shameless (without shame) tras = through /beyond trastienda = back room of a shop uni = one uniforme = uniform (lit. one form) There is an abundance of other examples and some of these prefixes can have more than one meaning, so this list is really just a taster. You may like to think about the meanings of: antidemocrático, antecedentes, bicicleta, minusválido, sinfín, trascender, revivir, proponer. I’ll just finish off with something different but related, and that is compound words. Again there are many of them, so here are just a few that I like. Boquiabierto = open-mouthed Nomeolvides = forget-me-not Agridulce = bittersweet Aguardiente = firewater And I truly think there is enough food for thought there to keep you going for a good long time!

Route 66 diner helps raise 625€ for horse rescue centre A FUNDRAISER celebrating the first anniversary of Benimar’s Route 66 American diner has helped raise 625€ for the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre at Rojales. Rescue centre co-founder Sue Weeding thanked everyone who supported the dinner and raffle saying the money would go towards the feeding and care of the centre’s more than 90 horses, ponies and donkeys rescued from abuse and neglect. “It was a very busy day, as Rod had been called out by the police to rescue a horse and later had 700 bales of alfalfa to get off the field,” Sue said. “I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to attend because I broke my wrist a few weeks ago and can’t drive. But at the last minute all our volunteers from our La Zenia charity shop came to the rescue. They bought the raffle prizes with their own money and picked me up to make sure I could be there. It was just wonderful and a huge thanks to everyone involved.” The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre relies solely on donations to fund its animal welfare work. As part of its fundraising efforts, Sue said a ninth charity shop selling second hand clothes, furniture and bric-a-brac will soon open in Dolores. A manager and volunteers are needed to run the Dolores shop, which is expected to open in about four weeks’ time. If you’re interested in helping out, please call Sue on 652 021 980. The centre also accepts donations to stock its charity shops. Large donated items such as furniture can be collected from your house and each shop also offers a delivery service for large items. The rescue centre, located just outside Rojales at Partido Lo Garriga 59, opens to the public on the first Sunday of every month from 1pm to 4pm. Legion wins award THE ROYAL British Legion has presented a prestigious 2015 award to Benidorm and District for the most improved branch membership – the third time it has won the honour. by Jack Troughton

THE MCCRAE SHIELD is given annually to the overseas branch with the best figures over the last three years. The presentation was made at an annual celebration organised by the Legion’s District North at El Cisne, Alfaz Del Pi, where 160 members from six local branches and the Hondon Valley Branch met to catch up and swap stories. The highlight of the day was the presentation with District Chairman Hails handed the shield to Marilyn Rogers, Benidorm and District’s Membership Secretary (pictured). Everyone enjoyed a meal of a meat selection, salads, and cheese and crackers supplied by Aulsberry’s Catering Service, of Hondon de los Frailes, and entertainment was courtesy of John the Fiddler – with many guests joining in the songs. And the traditional raffle raised more than 500€ for the annual Poppy Appeal. To find out more about the Legion and its branches, visit www.britishleagion.org.uk/ counties/spain-north or email the Secretary on secretary.rbl.dns@gmail.com. Meet a smile

Make A Smile chickens

by Jack Troughton MEMBERS OF U3A Vall Del Pop headed for the hills to visit the Make A Smile charity project at Relleu. In April the charity’s Tony Grande spoke at a U3A about the EMAUS self-sufficiency project and on Sunday, 52 members took a coach to the farm to see for themselves. The charity aims to make the farm selfsufficient and support 24 young adults with learning disabilities and EMAUS children. Produce is sold locally and to restaurants along the coast, along with the eggs laid by chickens.

People can sponsor a chicken for 10€ or an olive tree for 50€ - 1,000 have been planted – and in time olive oil will be sold to increase income. And after a tour of the crops, many of the members sponsored a fowl or a tree, and purchased fresh vegetables and eggs. The visit included a homemade paella lunch with drinks. It raised 520€ for the charity, together with a donation of 208€, and 601€ proceeds of a quiz night organised in aid of EMAUS.

Maintaining a healthy liver living in Spain by Jeanette Rice

LIVING IN Spain can, in some cases, put temptations our way that may be fun at the time but can create a long lasting effect on our bodies and our health. One of the key organs of the body, the liver, can suffer from the relaxed lifestyle that most of us enjoy across the Mediterranean, with tapas combined with a glass of wine or two or three on a daily basis causing our livers to struggle processing the alcohol. The liver is the largest gland in our body and without it a person cannot survive. It has a number of functions the key ones being: Detoxifying the blood to rid it of harmful substances (such as toxins, drugs, alcohol and more); Converts stored sugar to usable sugar when the body’s sugar levels fall below normal; Produces bile, a substance needed to digest fats; Breaks down haemoglobin as well as insulin and other hormones; Destroys old red blood cells. Performing so many vital functions the liver is very prone to disease. It isn’t all doom and gloom though as you can detoxify your liver with certain super foods, here are just a few: 1. Beets and Carrots: Carrots are rich in Glutathione, a protein that helps detoxify the liver. Both are extremely high in plantflavonoids and beta-carotene. Eating beets and carrots can

help stimulate and improve overall liver function. 2. Tomatoes: They have abundant amounts of Glutathione which again, are a great detoxifier for the liver. As a side effect, Lycopene in tomatoes will protect against breast, skin, and lung cancer. 3. Grapefruit: Another source of the liver cleansing glutathione. It’s also high in vitamin C and antioxidants, which boost the production of liver detoxification enzymes and increase the natural cleansing process of the liver. 4. Spinach: Raw spinach is also a major source of glutathione, triggering the toxin cleansing enzymes of the liver. 5. Citrus Fruits: Lemons and limes contain very high amounts of vitamin C, which helps stimulate the liver and aids the synthesizing of toxic materials into substances that can be absorbed by water. 6. Turmeric: Turmeric is the liver’s favorite spice and helps boost liver detox. It does this by assisting enzymes that actively flush out dietary carcinogens. 7. Apples: They are high in pectin and other chemicals essential to cleansing and releasing toxins from the digestive tract. Apples make it easier for the liver to handle the toxic load during the cleansing process. 8. Garlic: Garlic is loaded with sulphur, which activates liver enzymes that help your body flush out toxins. Garlic also holds high amounts of allicin and selenium, two natural compounds that also aid in liver cleansing. 9. Leafy Green Vegetables: Green veggies are extremely high in

plant chlorophylls that absorb environmental toxins, increase bile production, and neutralize heavy metals, chemicals, and pesticides, which lowers the burden on the liver. 10. Green Tea: Green tea is full of plant antioxidants known as catechins, a compound known to assist liver function.

Football Campus FOR THE seventh year running, Torrevieja’s Sports City will host a football campus for Children from all over Spain. by Keith Nicol THIS SUMMER’S event takes place through the month of July and attracts hundreds of footballers, not just from Torrevieja but mainly from Madrid and the north of Spain, who avail themselves of a family summer holiday in the process, by the Mediterranean. Torrevieja’s XPERT CAMPUS has become a baseline for summer camps in that they combine sport with different activities that promote coexistence and human formation integrated through sport. They also have an educational aspect in that the campus is bilingual; Spanish and English. Originally known as the Champions Campus , it has also attracted some big names, none bigger nationally than Real Madrid and Spanish Captain and Goalkeeper Iker Casillas back in 2012, who unfortunately could not attend due to Spain’s winning involvement in the European Championship. Under a new name, Xpert Events chose to return to the city of Torrevieja due to its magnificent sports facilities and location by the Mediterranean. This year, unlike previous years, three activities will be carried out, for which, space permitting; the enrolment period is still open. The XPERT Soccer Campus started activities yesterday, Thursday 2nd July but runs through to July 11th on the artificial turf of the Sports City. Participation of more than 100 students of all ages and both boys and girls is expected. For those wishing to participate in a variety of sports, the XPERT Multi-sport Campus could be for you. Running parallel to the football campus it offers Basketball, Football, Tennis, Paddle, Golf, Bodycombat and watersports. With the scorching weather, watersports may be a more attractive option and the XPERT Nautical Camp my be perfect for your children, in collaboration with the RCNT: Real Club Nautico of Torrevieja. This takes place from 11th to 20th July this summer, This new campus teaches students how to navigate various dinghies, kayaking, canoeing and surfing. A maximum of 75 children can participate in this. The program of the XPERT CAMPS is developed in collaboration with the Junta de Castilla y León and its activities are conducted bilingually in English. Information about all the camps, times and registration can be found at www.xpert-camps.com or calling: 911 610 327.

HUNDREDS OF swimmers from clubs across the region and outside the Valencia Community took part in the “5th Valencian Regional Championships” at the “Parque Oeste Sports complex” in Valencia on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th June. Each swimmer was allowed to participate in a maximum of 3 individual races and relays. Club Natación Torrevieja entered a team of 5 swimmers but unfortunately due to illness and last minute work commitments only three swimmers competed. First to swim Saturday morning was Vicki Connolly in the women’s 50m freestyle event. Nervous but determined Vicki swam a close a race and won a Bronze medal. Missing out on Silver by 7 hundredths of a second and missing gold by half a second. Not to be disheartened she later stormed on to take gold in the 200m Freestyle by a clear 11 seconds. Team mates Beth Altabas and Paul Matthews both took gold medals in their races, Beth winning gold in the women’s 50m Butterfly and Paul in the men’s 100m Freestyle event. After a break over lunch racing commenced again for the afternoon session. First to swim was Paul in his 50m Butterfly, matching his current best time, and beating his long standing rival, to win gold. Paul later went on to finish with a third gold in his 100m Backstroke event. Beth then swam her final two races of the competition, the women’s 200m Individual Medley and the 200m Backstroke. Victorious again Beth won a further two gold medals. Last to swim, in the last race of the day, was Vicki in her 400m Freestyle event. Keeping up the team’s success Vicki won gold in this event and beat her own Regional Record by 4 seconds. So, all in all, 9 medals from 9 events made a good warm up for the Summer Nationals! Does the Society still have a role in modern golf? Does it work? By Tony Myles MANY YEARS ago I was first introduced to this great sport by a colleague who really only wanted to off-load his old blade style clubs. At that time the only way that you could participate, if you were a newcomer to the game, was to add your name to a long waiting list at a local golf club and hope that a few elderly members ‘moved on’. Alternatively you could join a golf society, whereby you could probably count on one game per month depending

on how active your Society Secretary was. These days most golf clubs are desperate

for members and so the prospect of being interviewed and then ‘played-in’ has long since disappeared. But the opposite is true for the Golf Society as I can confirm that it is alive and kicking vibrantly in Spain. Why? Is it cost? I am not sure because, even though Campbell’s efforts have persuaded numerous golf clubs to lower their fees and offer exceptional deals, the cost of playing once per week as a society member can’t be much lower than the annual membership fees at numerous clubs across Spain. Convenience? Playing with a society is always optional and so no cost is incurred if you decide to opt out for a few weeks. By contrast once the Club’s annual subscription is paid then most club members will endeavour to play as frequently as possible, on the basis that the more games that are played the lower is the cost per round. Socialising? Golf is the most sociable of all sports as you are always endeavouring to beat the course and not your follow competitor. So does the Society offer a greater degree of social activity? Or, are the other more diverse reasons? What is your opinion? I am always delighted to hear your views and they are always appreciated. Each week I enjoy feedback from a number of well-

head 2 head

Big Bertha

established groups around the north and south Costa Blanca. However there are hundreds and possibly thousands of Golf Societies right across Spain and I would like to hear from you on any subject whatsoever. Are you getting a great deal? Are your numbers shrinking or growing? How frequently do you play? Do you welcome guests? These are just a handful of topics that I would love to learn from you. Will you take a few minutes to send me an email? info@clgolf.es. Many thanks.

Tony M - Good news about Callaway. Campbell - Yes we are very pleased as it means we now have all the major brands available and all directly from the manufacturers. Tony M - Where did they get the name Big Bertha? Campbell - I think it was some sort of large gun. Tony M - That reminds me a lot of my swing. Campbell - Are you serious? Tony M - Oh yes my mates say that when I pull the trigger, it’s a barrel of laughs and they could get injured through friendly fire.

Feel at home in the SX4 S-Cross FIRST IMPRESSIONS matter. In business it is that care and attention to appearance, dress and general conduct that makes a lasting impression. The same can be applied to vehicles and that’s where Suzuki scores highly. From that first moment of opening the door and sitting in the driver’s seat I feel at home in the SX4 S-Cross. Bear in mind that I drive a lot of cars and yet Suzukis always stands out because they are all comfortable.

I test the Suzuki during the worst weather for 100 years. At one point over 100,000 homes are without power and some unfortunate residents in Somerset have been without power since Christmas. Flooding is encountered on almost every route but my Japanese friend with its raised ride height is ideal in such situations. High winds and water logged roads ensure that it is nigh on impossible to exceed 60mph. Those gusting high winds do buffet the Suzuki but it feels confident enough. It is quite sluggish though especially on startup and so it is pleasing to find that it is equipped with a sport mode that livens things up. In fact it remains on this mode for most of the test

because I find it gives it the ‘oomph’ that I require. Interestingly it doesn’t affect fuel economy that much either with the vehicle still returning over 40mpg, which I’m quite impressed with considering it’s a 1.6-litre petrol. When conditions become too slippery it is easy to turn the centre mounted dial to ‘snow and mud’ mode, which is also extremely useful during the test. Some of the routes that I am most familiar with have been closed due to the floods and workmen try hard to remedy the situation. All this talk of climate change being the problem - Queen Victoria reported similar circumstances in her diary many years ago. Whatever the reason, you’re grateful to be driving the SX4 S-Cross. The raised ride height, the permanent 4WD and the powerful windscreen wipers and washers make driving in these challenging conditions enjoyable rather than a chore. My two girls in the back quickly fall asleep and my wife Caroline finds her heated front seat comfortable. “I like the lemon fragrance to the windscreen wash,” she says, adding that sometimes it can be very overpowering requiring the windows to be wound down. The large glass panoramic roof makes the cabin feel light and airy and on just one of the days of the test the sun actually appears bringing the glass roof really into its own. I like the fact that the front part also has a tilting sunroof function. New price: 18,117€ to 28,444€ 0-60mph: 12secs Top speed: 108mph Economy: 40mpg Watch the video at www.testdrives.biz
