Cocaine lab busted NATIONAL POLICE in the Region of Murcia have dismantled a fully equipped cocaine processing laboratory. Police arrested six Colombian nationals on suspicion of a crime against public health. by Keith Nicol
Mark McCluskey of La Rosa Bar in San Cayetano
The MABS Ice Bucket Challenge THE RECENT Ice Bucket Challenge sweeping the internet and international news has arrived in Murcia. Read the full story on page 48.
During June knowledge of the existence of a group of people dedicated to the manufacturing and sale of cocaine in the region of Murcia was made. After conducting various investigations, National Police agents identified the main protagonists being investigated as well as the homes where they allegedly stored the narcotic substance. Officers recorded the sale of narcotics and intercepted the buyer carrying 230 grams of cocaine as he was preparing to board the train at Murcia railway station to travel to Madrid. After the first arrest was carried out, further arrests of five members of the organization dismantled the entire operation. Three houses were entered, two in the city of
Murcia and another in a cottage in Pantano de Santomera (Murcia), the latter in which a complete laboratory for processing cocaine had been installed. The agents confiscated six kilograms of cocaine, cutting substances useful for the adulteration of cocaine, a large amount of acetone, ammonia, grinders, moulds, hydraulic jacks, masks, goggles, precision scales, 8,300 euros in cash, five hundred euro counterfeit notes, three vehicles and mobile phones. The operation was conducted by the Drug Unit and Organized Crime (UDYCO) of the Judicial Police Provincial Brigade from the Police Headquarters of Murcia. The operation to bust the cocaine operation was performed with the collaboration of the Provincial Brigade Group Public Safety and Police Judicial District Police Station of El Carmen.

Live entertainment outdoors is a major confrontation point this summer
by Keith Nicol FOR MANY years club and bar owners have complained about being told to shut off their music for the night, because of noise complaints. On August 19th, Jax Lawson from LR Shows decided the time was right to try and organise a petition to promote the idea of allowing special licences for live music during all of June, July, August and September. You can find links to the petition here: www.lrshows.com. They require 30,000 people to sign the petition for it to be considered. The Press Release says: “The discrepancy between those who are allowed to have live music and who are not continues with some bars too fearful to put on entertainment despite having the correct paperwork, while their neighbours carry on blasting out music until all hours.” This is the major point of the campaign. If a bar has the correct licence for live music, then they should not have any problem in having live entertainment inside their establishment. The real factor is outdoor music. One bar under threat of closure is Charlie’s Bar in Torrevieja. Owner Tony received a visit from the Policia Local on June 7th and told to stop

the entertainment immediately, which they did. The real issue for Tony and dozens of other bars is that while some pubs are being told they are not allowed any outdoor entertainment, others totally flaunt the law, placing bar owners such as Tony under the threat of having to close their business for good, as they can’t compete with other pubs who are blaring out music. A few Town Halls are open to holding meetings with those concerned to see if the playing field can be levelled and possible concessions granted for summer 2015. After all, if pubs stay in business, they pay taxes, employ staff, contract entertainers, order stock and attract tourism to the area, so one would think it’s a win-win situation. The main issue remains in that unless the rules are the same for every bar, then those who flaunt the law will continue to benefit while others may be forced to close their doors. Even if the Petition was heard and passed in 2015, whether or not Charlie’s Bar could survive twenty more months without the playing field being the same for everyone remains to be seen but we all hope that the voice of reason will prevail and something can be done sooner rather than later.

Banks take a bashing BRITAIN’S HIGH street banks are facing a wave of criticism over their treatment of customers who are UK citizens but living abroad. by Jack Troughton It is alleged they are putting a “squeeze” on expats and trying to divorce themselves from the five to six million expats worldwide – with more than two million living within the EU and around 800,000 in Spain. And while different banks take a different view on customers living offshore, it is claimed they hide behind ‘terms and conditions’ to justify their varying attitude to expats. However, according to the Financial Conduct Authority, the Treasury’s anti moneylaundering regulations are clear. Expats can maintain a UK account as long as ‘know your customer’ required due diligence by banks is fulfilled. The EU is already examining the situation and is understood to be drafting a directive that anyone should be able to open and maintain a bank account if they have a need for it because discrimination based solely on living aboard would be illegal. Meanwhile, the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority is investigating the way in which high street banks operate personal current accounts and expats are being urged to submit their views before a 17th September deadline. Campaign group Votes For Expat Brits – which increasingly has to defend the rights of those UK citizens living abroad – hopes everyone with any concerns will complain to the CMA. IMPOSSIBLE Expats find it difficult “or even impossible” to open an account without a UK address, switch accounts to gain advertised advantages, or get a credit or debit card. Yet many still have banking links back home. They repatriate money, keep UK savings, need to make payments to UK companies, and use the account when visiting the UK. Some occupational pensions can only be paid into a UK account. “This is another kick in the teeth – by our own country – to us Brits who have legitimately come to live elsewhere within the European Union,” said Margaret Hales MBE, a Costa Blanca-based campaign activist.
She said that personally she had experienced little trouble with NatWest until the bank’s own adviser suggested switching a small investment into another account – but found when filling in the paperwork it was “banned” because there was no UK address. “For us this is annoying – for others this kind of discrimination could be very difficult. Of course we still need a bank account in the UK. Our occupational pensions are paid directly into it, we go to see the family and we need a British account to spend money in the UK,” said Margaret. “I am fed up to the back teeth with this sort of anti-expat diatribe and I am so pleased that the Competition and Markets Authority is calling these organisations to account. However, it is up to us to write to them with our experiences and to complain.” COMPLAIN And the campaign’s Brian Cave agrees. He believes the more people complain, the more the CMA will take the matter seriously. “Hopefully, the CMA will remind banks of their obligations, as operators in the UK of the UK’s membership of the EU and the need to allow unfettered movement of money as well as people and goods throughout the EU at least!” Expat Warren Gibbons has already written to the CMA, the FCA, and to European Commissioners, complaining expats are being treated unfairly, accusing the banks of “persistently lying” to justify their stance. “I believe all UK citizens resident outside the UK are being treated unfairly by the UK banking industry and are being excluded from a competitive market in a manner that is against EU regulations and also in contravention of the principles of the Treaty of Rome.” Complaints to the CMA can be sent to retailbanking@cma.gsi.gov.uk. Warren further suggests sending a copy of the complaints to Michel.Barnier@eceuropa.eu; Jonathan. Faull@ec.europa.eu; and consumer.queries@fca.org.uk. Man dies while bathing in Torrevieja
By Keith Nicol A 70-year-old man died on Monday while bathing at a beach located in the vicinity of Cala Ferrís, Torrevieja. The incident occurred about 12:45pm when several swimmers detected the presence of the man floating unconscious in the sea. Two Guardia Civil officers rescued the body of the bather and brought him to shore. Emergency services were quickly on the scene and performed resuscitation but could do nothing to save his life. The incident took place in an area of small coves with sand and low cliffs between Mar Azul and Cala Ferrís. The area is a large section of the south coast of Torrevieja that has never received assistance from the Red Cross lifeguards who perform the rescue services on the town’s main beaches. The entire beach area was crowded on Monday and swimming conditions were optimal after several days of strong swell. The removal of the corpse occurred at about two in the afternoon. The deceased was on holiday in Torrevieja and resided in the neighbourhood close to Cala Ferrís.

HAVE YOU ever wondered what happen to the bottle top campaigns that were so popular a while back. Don’t worry, because the campaigns are still alive and kicking and if you have been wondered where to drop them off, you can do so at any meeting of the U3A on the last Monday morning of the Month at the CMO, behind Carrefour or to ASM Transporte Urgente in Calle San Policarpo. The office is in the next block down from Torrevieja TV and opposite an Asador de Pollos Paco. It has a glass shop window type front and the sign is red and white. Through the U3A, all funds raised from the recycling of bottle tops are now going to help ALPE, which has lost its funding due to the financial crisis so any other help is needed more than ever. Roughly the current value is 500₏ per skip, so the more the merrier. So keep saving your old bottle tops and donate them to a great cause rather than just throwing them away in your household waste.
inclusive. During the school year, schools also close on the following days: October 9th, Day of the Valencian Community; December 8th, Immaculate Conception Day, March 19th, San Jose and May 1st, Labour Day.

Influx of illegal immigrants By Irena Bodnarec THE NUMBER of illegal immigrants attempting to arrive by boat onto mainland Spain over the last year has soared a staggering 500% in the last year. In July and August alone, Alicante Guardia Civil have intercepted seven vessels with 49 people onboard – the latest in the early hours of Saturday morning off the coast of Torrevieja. The majority of crossings originate from Algeria and are thought to be organized by mafia cartels, who take advantage and large sums of money from those desperate to escape. Most make the crossing on overcrowded and substandard boats, often in the Summer months when the waters are calmer and less treacherous. Since 2009, the Guardia Civil have operated sophisticated radar detectors on the waves, but it looks as if these alone are not enough to stem the tide of illegal immigrants. 49 people are currently being detained by National Police after being intercepted attempting to arrive off the coasts of Santa Pola, Torrevieja and Orihuela.
by Jan Gamm POLICE ARE hunting one or more paedophiles in ‘Operation Candy’ after three children aged between six and nine were kidnapped in the Ciudad Lineal district of Madrid between April and August, the victims found wandering and dazed in low traffic areas after a few hours, showing signs of having been drugged with sedatives. It is thought the perpetrators could be luring the children into a vehicle before driving out of the area for several miles, allegedly abusing them and returning them later. The children are showered before being returned to the street to remove all traces of evidence. Police suspect a well organised and highly professional operation as so far no CCTV cameras have captured any images of the suspects.
Young drivers insurance nightmare YOUNG DRIVERS in Spain aged 18 to 25 complain they are discriminated against as it emerges they are being charged up to 145% more for insurance than drivers at an average age of 40, with a typical annual insurance cost of 1,298€. This compares with drivers aged between 26 and 35 paying 634€. Although the premium slowly reduces with the number of years a driver has at the wheel, and drivers under the age of 26 fully realise that newly qualified car users are more likely to have accidents resulting in a higher claims ratio, they still believe they are treated unfairly. And most young drivers must rely on parental contributions to be able to afford to drive, meaning families with young drivers face an enormous annual insurance commitment.

Zara in Anti-Semitic storm SPANISH CHAIN store Zara has been forced to withdraw an illconceived line of ‘sheriff T-shirts’ that bear an unfortunate resemblance to striped concentration camp uniforms bearing a yellow ‘Star of David’ used by the Third Reich to designate Jews during the Holocaust. Zara management has apologised for any offence caused, pointing out that the design was intended to look like a sheriff’s shirt. However, despite the apology many customers are still accusing Inditex, the world’s largest and richest clothing retailer, of antiSemitism with some customers refusing to shop at Zara in the future. The shirts were intended for sale in the UK, Israel, Germany, France, Albania and Sweden.
Hot, hot, hot…
THE COSTA Blanca has been sizzling this week with temperatures approaching 40º even on the coast. Holidaymakers with nothing to do but lay on the beach under a shady umbrella have revelled in the extreme heat; others who have to go to work despite the fiery temperatures have resorted to taking a dip in a convenient city fountain at lunchtime! And high humidity has added to discomfort, forcing elderly residents to stay indoors during the hottest part of the day. Visitors are reminded to drink plenty of non-alcoholic liquid, wear a hat and avoid over-exertion. Drivers are advised to carry water in the car.
Hey big spender! ACCORDING TO figures released by the Ministry of Industry, Energy & Tourism, Brits lead the way as top spenders in Spain. In the first 7 months of the year, spending by international tourists reached over 34 million euros – a 7% rise on last years figure. The figure for July alone is 8.151 million euros – a 4.5% increase on 2013. British tourists have spent 6.812 million euros, which accounts for just under 20% of the total followed by the Germans with 5.461 million euros.
A SPANISH Guardia Civil helicopter crew attempting to rescue a mountain climber with a broken ankle crashed in fog on Sunday, killing all three crew members on board. A fourth crew member already on the ground was spared. The aircraft’s rotor blades clipped the side of the mountain. The tragedy occurred near the Picos de Europa range in Leon. Three helicopters and an ambulance were dispatched to the scene to recover the bodies of the three men. The injured climber was airlifted to hospital. The crew has been named as Captain Emilio Pérez Peláez and Lt. Campsol Children’s Play area stopped
DOZENS OF children and their parents were left disappointed on Wednesday when work on the new Children’s Play Area in Camposl was halted by Mazarrón Council. A spokesperson for the Bahia Lions and Leos said: “It is with great regret that the work that started on the Children’s Play Area on Camposol has been stopped due to some people on Camposol denouncing the Children’s Play area. The much needed project would have benefited everyone on Camposol as it would have given the children somewhere to play away from the commercial and residential areas.” More than 1,000€ had been raised by local charities to build the much desired kids zone. All the required building permits had been applied for and approved, however, as work on the project started, representatives from Mazarrón Council told workers to lay down their tools as denuncias against the project has been received.

Speaker calls for e-vote JOHN BERCOW – Speaker of the House of Commons – has called for a major overhaul of the British electoral system including the introduction of electronic voting. by Jack Troughton He claims in moving the nation forward the introduction of e-voting as an option should not “be seen as earth-shattering”. And while the speaker underlined security measures must be in place to maintain and protect “the integrity of the ballot box”, a much simpler and easier way to increase numbers casting a vote would increase voter turnout – the recent European Parliamentary elections witnessed a mere 33.8% turnout. Mr Bercow is open to suggestions via a Speaker’s Commission on Digital Democracy. He said a 21st Century democracy at work should not be typified by citizens “dragging themselves down to an empty community hall or primary school on a wet Thursday to put a cross on a tiny piece of paper.” And he said: “Perhaps the time has come for the House of Commons to allow greater choice, more flexibility, and
public participation.” CAMPAIGN The Speaker’s view has been welcomed by campaign group Votes For Expat Brits fighting for all British citizens to have a ‘vote for life’ in British General Elections – currently the right to cast a vote is lost under a 15 year rule. The group is also highly critical of the current postal and proxy voting system. In many cases ballot papers are received too late to return in time for strict election deadlines. Britain next goes to the polls for a General election on 7th May, next year, and will elect the 56th Parliament of the United Kingdom. Cash for properties despite bank mortgage offers DESPITE THE marked change in banks’ attitude to property lending in recent months it seems that many purchasers prefer to ‘go it alone’ and pay for their new homes outright with good old ‘ready money’. In the Alicante province more than 60% of properties changing ownership in the last few months have been paid for with hard cash. And in a buyers’ market, many vendors are yielding to less than generous offers as purchasers determined to avoid taking a mortgage with Spanish banks haggle over the asking price.

Water challenge with dire results
A BELGIAN photographer remains in a critical condition with multiple injuries after 1,500 litres of water was dropped on him from a plane at low altitude. The stunt was an extreme version of the ‘Ice Bucket Challenge’ to help sufferers of ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis). The water was dropped on the 51-year-old victim, a resident of Empuriabrava, just before the seaplane touched down at a Girona Aero Club. The aircraft would normally be deployed to fight fires.

Jihadist recruitment in Spain unclear
An Islamic militant arrested in Spain in March
by Jan Gamm IT IS now estimated that British residents are joining up to fight with ISIS forces in Syria at a rate of seven per week, with 1,000 Brits now helping to spread terror in Syria and Iraq. And although anti-terrorist authorities in Spain are certain that Spanish jihadists are joining ISIS, the exact number of Spanish passport holders who have crossed into Syria to fight is unclear. However, the Ministry of
the Interior suggests ‘around 60’. Morocco believes that 1,200 nationals holding Spanish residency cards have joined IS but again numbers are vague and the only official list contains 12 names, nine of whom are Spaniards, with three who are resident in Spain. And five of those are already dead. An open stretch of rugged border in Turkey that is poorly policed has been dubbed the ‘Jihad Express’ as it is the place where up to 20 Jihadist recruits per day cross into Syria and Iraq.

Merkel backs de Guindos in Brussels GERMAN CHANCELLOR Angela Merkel is supporting Spanish Economy Minister Luis de Guindos to head the Eurogroup’s finance team. The Chancellor’s endorsement is seen as vital in the selection process for the top job on the table at the European summit on Saturday. De Guindos’ performance throughout the past two and a half years as Spanish finance minister, hailed as an outstanding example of economic reform under the threat of an all-out bailout, is set to place his candidacy at the head of the wish list when top jobs are handed out. Merkel said: “Luis de Guindos was an excellent economic minister in Spain in difficult times.”

Changing the status IF THE news reported in the RTN on 14th August is correct, once again we have the position where a British government is talking about changing the status of tax-paying UK citizens by removing personal allowances from ex-pats living quite legally in other EU countries. As with the Winter Fuel Allowance, people who have worked in and contributed to the UK economy all their working lives are to have the rules changed without any means of representation or protest. I have no problem with paying legitimate taxes or living by the rules that I agreed to when I ‘joined up’ to the system. However, the present system of having a vote for a limited period in a UK constituency whose representative has no interest whatsoever in matters that seriously affect the economics of several hundred thousands of taxpayers living in another country, is ridiculous and morally indefensible. Until we who live in other parts of the EU and pay tax in the UK can get responsible representation for citizens living in such areas, the British government can hardly claim to be truly democratic. I think that the EU parliament would have something to say about this state of affairs, but we voted for Spanish politicians, for whom we are but a small minority. What we need is a representative similar to what the French people living in England enjoy. Alex Walker, San Miguel de Salinas

PLEASE, PLEASE look out for my cat! Thanks to the vet leaving all the doors open and then not fastening the cage, he escaped from the surgery on Friday 15th August, somewhere in Calpe on the road leading down from the Red Cross to Puerto Blanco. He’s a small, long-legged, all ginger, full tom and is semi-feral. It’s unlikely you’ll be able to get near him because he’s not that tame and is both ill and frightened but any sightings would help immensely. He answers to the name Mini-me. Grieving Grandparents TO THE person who broke into our apartment in Javea Port on Sunday afternoon, 24th August, and took certain items of jewellery of sentimental value, we just want to say what a horrible person you are. You must have grandparents, like we are, and the items you stole can never be replaced. You took my wedding and engagement rings, but more painful for us, you also took a ring and necklace that belonged to our daughter who died in a car accident at the age of 18, some 27 years ago. All the items were of great sentimental value. So if you can feel it in your heart to put all the jewellery you stole in a bag and leave them at RTN office marked ‘To Be Collected by Grieving Grandparents in Javea Port’ we would be eternally grateful.
Not the answer
REGARDING NOISE monitors, I was disappointed to read this article as similar equipment was introduced in the UK many years ago. It not only dramatically reduced live music and earnings of musicians/ entertainers but reduced the trade at each venue. Perhaps a policy of co-operation between the venue owner/manager, the musicians/entertainers, the local residents and the police might be tried where the venue owner/ manager asks the offending musicians/ entertainers to turn their PA system down. If they took no notice I think the owner/manager has the remedy... they never work that venue again! Most customers like to be entertained whilst enjoying a night out with friends but don’t enjoy having to shout to be heard. Noise limiters and excessive fines are not the answer. If such practices continue then not only will tourism suffer but the creative arts too. Jimmy Stead (Musician)

You and your Selfie at Mowo by Keith Nicol EVERYBODY IS doing it; taking a selfie. It’s the new rage of the smartphone and tablet carrying population. Both the ‘selfie’ and the ‘foodie’ video along with how to use social networks will be the stars of 2014 Mowo. The Instagram forum is one of the most respected in Spain and the third edition of this event will be held on the 12th, 13th and 14th September 2014. New trends in mobile photography for social media such as “selfies”, the art of taking a photo of yourself, and “foodies”, made by fotogragía of foodies food and video are the main attractions of Mowo 2014. Costa Blanca Mowo has already confirmed the presence of a few of Spain’s most prolific and significant “instagrammers”, such as Mary Moulds - @ mariamoldes--, Manuel Ruiz - @ manucatman - Fran Garcia - @ instafraner--, Fernando Prats - @ fernandoprats--, Daniel Rueda - @ drcuerda--, Maria Ortega - @ lasaldemar--, Javi Corral - @ daphunkt--, Diana Lemons - @ dynnk--, Alma Andreu - @ almax_forte--, Fernando Serrano - @ fszapata--, and Pepe Romera, among others, who will share their experience as a mobile photographers, pass on their tricks of the trade when editing photographs and help you to discover techniques that will help improve their use. The sponsor of the congress, Gabriel Samper, will also be lecturing and holding workshops. Samper said that mobile photography is “the present and the near future
for photography and advertising, with advertising slogans giving way to a well-managed image, and Instagram, with over 200 million active users, has become the best channel for that.” All 200 photographs selected from over 12,000 submitted for the Mowo Exhibition will be on display in the Vista Alegre Exhibition Hall from the 12th to 29th September. Following the major impact on social networking and user participation from 2013, enrolment records were broken very quickly compared to previous years. Italian streakers upset Barcelona
BARCELONA RESIDENTS are protesting about the way tourists conduct themselves following a raunchy frolic by three drunken Italian men who stripped naked in the middle of the day before running in and out of shops including a local supermarket. Pictures of the nude men quickly went viral on social networks. The prank sparked Catalan fury and hundreds of protestors took to the streets to object over the image such behaviour presents and the high incidence of litter and noise at the height of the holiday season in Barcelona. Citizens claim that bad behaviour is encouraged by cheap, unlicensed holiday rentals in the area.

Torrevieja infantile runners up in Spanish tennis
By Keith Nicol TENNIS IN Torrevieja is growing from strength to strength with the city’s under 14 team coming second to Valencia in the national team championships. Are your child’s eyes prepared to go back to school? DURING THE first 12 years of our lives, as much as 80% of learning is accomplished through our vision. Yet, one out of every four children has an undetected vision problem that may inhibit their progress. ONCE CHILDREN go to school, good eye-sight is crucial to keep up with their studies. Experts believe that many learning disabilities could be vision related as they may not be able to read the blackboard or text books. Specsavers Opticas suggest that a child should have their first eye examination at around three years old, as the earlier things are detected the easier they are to rectify without delaying the child’s development.
This September, they are advising all parents to incorporate a thorough eye test into their back-to-school routine so they can be prepared if their child does need glasses. The process of taking an eye test for a child is simple. Firstly, the optometrist will ask the parent or guardian about any relevant family history and any problems their child may be experiencing. Then several child-friendly tests will be undertaken, using special charts and other materials to help children indicate what they can see and how clearly. They will test the vision of each eye and will check whether they work properly together. They will also measure the child’s focusing ability and the health of the child’s eyes before discussing the results with the parents.
If a child does need glasses, there are some great ranges which tick all the boxes of fashion and durability. Kids that wear glasses can now be the envy of all their friends with fun frames in bright colours sporting their favourite character or toy. Popular ranges include Disney, Hello Kitty, Gruffalo, Star
Wars™, Simpsons, Marvel Heroes and Spider-Man and Specsavers have their own kids and teen ranges. Until the end of November 2014 Specsavers Opticas are offering free eye tests for children and adults. Visit www.specsavers.es to find your nearest store.

home and garden
The Great August Harvests
by
Dick Handscombe Holistic gardener and author
IF YOU have developed a garden full of vegetables, fruit, herbs and edible flowers for summer harvesting as well as a continuous display of flowers August is going to be a busy but gastronomic month. IF RASPBERRIES, blackberries and strawberries have been well mulched, kept moist and given a monthly comfrey liquid feed rich in potassium the plants will start to crop well as the temperatures drop down a little after the peaks of July. Gluts beyond what can be eaten in a day can be dried or frozen for stimulating winter deserts or energy foods for walking. Figs are also August fruits continuing into September. Two good uses for figs are as follows: An unusual tasty tapa can be prepared by halving figs and then laying a thin slice of chorizo or ham topped with a slice of cheese. Place under the grill until the cheese has melted and serve hot. A very tasty desert for non-drivers is prepared by filling an earthenware dish with whole figs, half covering them with 50/50 sweet white wine and anise liqueur and then cooking on a slow heat on a metal heat disperser until soft. Although possibly not yet ready for harvesting ensure that you continue to keep kiwis, mangoes, custard apples and bananas well watered. The first one grows well inland but frost free pockets are necessary for the latter three.
Almonds have already started to fall indicating that it is the time for harvesting. The latter is best accomplished by picking low nuts by hand from a step ladder and knocking down the high ones with a long cane. Our cane is left alongside our sole almond tree from year to year to ensure that it is handy. Remove the drying fleshy skins and dry the nuts well in the sun before storing in a box or sack in a cool dark cellar, under- build or garage. Spray with a 3% neem water solution to kill off any hatching flies and weevils. On the vegetable plot there will probably be gluts of tomatoes, peppers, aubergines, courgettes, cucumbers and onions which can be dried, bottled, frozen or processed into chutneys or dried for winter use. If you have never dried fruit or vegetables look out for a drier on the internet. Watch out for when the stalks of pumpkins, squash and melons dry and separate easily from the main plant. This is the time to harvest for storage. August is also a good month to harvest herbs for drying decoration and the distilling of essential oils. For starters rosemary, sage, rue, basil, oregano, lemon verbena, parsley and mint can be kept in bunches in a cool dry place until used or
placed in airtight containers when totally dried. The easiest oils to distil are lavender and geranium, the latter a useful deterrent against the geranium moth. Nasturtium, hibiscus, pineapple sage, rose and marigold flowers can be harvested to brighten up and enrich the health benefits of summer salads and jasmine and passion flowers can be dried for winter infusions. By the way now is a good time to prepare to build raised beds for growing vegetables this autumn if you have limited space or are
on a slope. Pictured are our experimental beds separate from our main vegetable plot. Raised beds can be very productive, but more about that next week‌ For other August tasks refer to the monthly calendars in each of our books namely Your Garden in Spain, Growing Healthy Fruit in Spain and Growing Healthy Vegetables in Spain. Another week, another Bank WHERE TO start. Another week and yet another UK Bank is fined, its becoming such a regular occurrence it’s become monotonous.
BRITAIN’S FINANCIAL regulator has fined Royal Bank of Scotland for selling mortgages without checking if customers could afford them. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) said on Wednesday it had fined RBS, 81 percent-owned by the British government, 14.5 million pounds for failing to ensure advice given to customers between June 2011 and March 2013 was suitable. RBS is among several major banks assisting regulators around the world investigating allegations of collusion and price-rigging in the global currency market, gold markets, etc etc the list goes on. RBS has already been fined 390 million pounds for its role in fixing the benchmark London interbank offered rate (Libor) and has set aside 3.2 billion pounds to compensate customers mis-sold loan insurance. One would hope that the Banks across the world had learnt their lessons by now and have realized that client’s needs should come first but as all the evidence shows that still not the case. Even here is Spain some Banks appear to be up to their old tricks, as the interest rates they can offer are so low they are trying to convince clients (usually expatriates) to invest in products the have a small amount of risk, they then say that the only product information they have is in Spanish. Where have we heard that before look what happened with Bankia and CAM. If you are offered any investment and the literature is not available, difficult to understand or in a different language no matter what returns you are being offered run a mile unless you don´t mind losing your money. In today’s financial climate it has never been more important to get independent, impartial advice, there is no time like now to act. Have you received a letter from the taxman asking for extra tax, because they have reviewed the value you declared on your purchase escritura? AS YOU may know the taxman is able to review the transfer tax paid on a purchase, and request you as a buyer to pay a Complementary Tax Liquidation, if they understand the value declared on the deed to be lower than that they which consider as the minimum acceptable market value. This liquidation could be appealed by means of a (Recurso de Reposicion) Reposition Appeal or by means of a Economic-Administrative Claim (Reclamacion Economico- Administrativa) within one month. On the 1st of October 2013, Court Order number 1336/2013 by the Contentious-Administrative Section of the High Court of the Valencian Community ( TSJ) gave an important ruling in this, understanding that that the method used by the Tax Office to review and re-evaluate the prices and values declared on the notarial “escrituras” and deeds of purchases, gifts and inheritances, is not adequate, being based on the values and information from catastro, etc. The TSJ states that these values could be used as guidance, but the
taxman should do an individual valuation, meaning the inspectors must visit or check the properties one by one, and personally, which normally they do not do. Obviously, it is important to prevent possible problems with the taxman, so before signing any escritura or deed of purchase, gift, inheritance, etc., is important confirm and check if the value to be declared is over the minimum tax acceptable value by the taxman. If it is not, it is important to keep evidence that justifies the lower value declared, i.e: photographs of the property if it is in bad conditions and needs renovation, keep invoices of any renovations carried out, etc. If you do receive a letter from CONSELLERÍA reviewing the tax paid, and they wish to review the value you declared on your purchase, gift or inheritance, as they believe the real market value to be higher, then before paying it, let our office know.

Life The Stompers on stage last year (by Benny Davis)
The boys are back... By Jack Troughton FANS OF classic New Orleans jazz are being given early warning that the internationally acclaimed Bourbon Street Stompers are returning to the Costa Blanca – and demand for tickets is likely to be high. The band, from Essen in Germany, is celebrating its 21st year – and the October visit is their fifth since 2009, and promoted by Concerts Costa Blanca the tour promises to again sell out quickly. Once again the Stompers will be accompanied by New Orleans jazz and opera vocalist Joshua Stewart – who made his debut with the band here last year – and Hamburg-based
singer Betty Berent, a veteran of the 2012 tour. The two vocalists have never sung together before – or even met! Last year, Joshua was only introduced to the Stompers an hour before going on stage but such was the professional of all concerned it appeared they had played together for years. The tour opens on Friday 17th October at the Palau in Altea, on Saturday 18th October the band plays the Auditori de Teulada-Moraira, and on Sunday 19th October the Stompers return to the huge Auditori de Diputacion de Alicante – unfortunately because of his commitments at the Munich Opera House, Joshua is unable to appear at the final concert.
Tickets are available as follows: Altea, call 96 688 1924 on Thursdays between 4.30pm and 7.30pm or visit www.palaualtea.reservaentradas.com; Teulada, at the Auditori box Office Wednesday to Saturday between 11am and 1pm and 6pm to 8pm, or at the town hall or the Espai La Senieta in Moraira, Monday to Friday between 9am and 3pm, or via Instanticket on 902 444 300 or www.instanticket.es; and Alicante via Instanticket on 902 444 300 or www.instanticket.es. Cucaracha Club ready to roll
COME SEPTEMBER 1st, Torrevieja and the surrounding area will be home to the cast and crew of the independent film production: The Cucaracha Club. By Keith Nicol Staring Billie Anthony Geddis, Al Matthews of ‘Aliens’ fame and Lofty, former Eastenders’ favourite Tom Watt, the cameras start rolling on Monday, as start of a projected 12week shoot gets underway. Last Sunday, the ensemble cast of mostly local actors, performers and entertainers, had their first full get together at Bar Spangles, Los Montesinos. Writer, Producer, actor and the driving force behind the production, Billie Anthony Geddis introduced everyone and went through the dos and don’ts of the production, and answered questions about this innovative production. The film will be the first International production shot in Spain and funded through Crowd Funding with only one other Spanish production made independently through this new and innovative method of budgeting. The film is a nonprofit production, with funds being raised to cover mainly production and especially, postproduction costs. All the staff and crew are working for free and if any business centres or individuals would like to get involved, feature their business or service; there is still time to have your service or talents built into the shooting schedule. While not as blatantly obvious as such films as the James Bond or Back to the Future series, product placement for a very small fee, can be accommodated, so being part of the production could be an excellent shop window to highlight your services. Monday signals two years of hard work, many a late night, lots of coffee and deal building to get the project off
Some of the cast and crew from The Cucaracha Club
the ground. The future plans for The Cucaracha Club are for film festival screenings around the world and in looking for distributorship. But even before the first frame is shot, talks are already underway about the possibility of turning the concept into a TV series. So, if you are walking through Torrevieja and you see video camera and people acting in front of it, please refrain from asking for autographs, photo-bombing the shoot or waving wildly at the camera. If you fancy being on screen, more extras are always
needed and if businesses wish to get onboard, please contact the film team through their website: www.siesta. productions. As their site says: “All we’re looking for is 1,000 people to donate €10 each and we can complete the film. In return, we’ll give you anything from a mention on the website, Cucaracha Club merchandise, a memorabilia pack and/or product placement dependent on your donation along with world wide advertising for you and/or your business.” Why not get involved and enjoy the ride.

Mercury takes on Libra and this brings a wind of change over a situation that needs just to move on, for everyone’s sake. With clear and precise instruction from Mercury and a balance of energies brought about by Libra there comes a time to make drastic changes, and to ensure that things are going to be very different from now onwards. Venus broadsides Virgo and brings a little romance just when it is needed. Loving yourself after what has happened just recently wont be easy, but it is what has to happen and some help is on its way in the form of a loving friendshipForget any pre conceived ideas you have taken on board and see this as recompense and reward. Mercury ends the week off with dramatic actions with Neptune. This is simply a good reason to look within yourself and to see what`s in store for you. With the dreamy focussed energy of a transient Neptune calling the shots and a counterclaim from Mercury, let things develop the way they should and throw caution to the wind for a Edging nicely towards the positive actions of the forthcoming New Moon, you are in pole position right now and ready to take on any responsibility. Your positive energies are telling you that it maybe now or never, and if this pans out the way that it should you will be amply rewarded for your patience, time and forethought. As the Sun digs deep around an ebullient Pluto there is some outstanding forensic work that needs your permission for completion. Pluto misses nothing, and can make adjustments at the ninth hour if that is what is required. Ask yourself just what you currently seek, and know that that which you ask for is now coming your way. Venus infuses your week with love and positive soul energy. If ever you needed to know yourself better it is now, and you will find that much beauty floods into your open soul in a bid to make the positive changes you are actively seeking. Go one step further and make decisive actions your prerogative and do not look back, look ahead with a smile! The Mercury ingress of Libra releases some very highly charged energy as combatants of the Cosmos you are lulled into peace and tranquillity. A great time to chill, but to also learn to use your soul energy to provide you with what is missing in your life right now. Take each step as a step closer to you, and away from past triviality and despair. There is work to be done, and you always knew that the lion’s share would be yours; and that when the time came it would be what you wanted. The time is now, and you can abandon so much of the unnecessary by just being yourself, and accepting that others see you as a sign of success and a font of inner knowledge to boot! Let bygones be bygones and let go of anything or anyone who tries to hold you back. If others are jealous of your continuing good luck then let them see the truth, that you have to work at what you want, and you have. You are an inspiration to others, and as Jupiter takes on Pluto midweek, work will increase for you every which way it can. Your strong Earth connection brings you a solid base with which to make some difficult decisions about the immediate future. Things have been left literally to the last minute, but you cannot be blamed for this in any way. Time for cards on the table, and a positive look at how current changes can work for you, rather than against you. After a strong opposition to the Sun earlier this week, there is a strong connection with Mercury to help spread the word. Not being turned on by idle gossip your great connection with so many is because of your strong loyalty and the ties of friendship; and this week the challenge to all others is that you are not to be messed with. Neptune brings things to a very satisfactory conclusion and you can forget those niggling worries that were always around you just lately. You are making progress in every direction and in so doing are spreading love and light into all that you do. Time now for some rest and relaxation to charge your body for work yet to come.
If it’s your birthday this week
Sudoku
You will know when to push the boat out, and recent events have only served to show you that there is a time and a place for everything. When you are ready there is work to be done, but only on your terms this time around.

Our Earthly life will reveal to us all its complications, but also resolve and progress will illuminate our journey of life here on this Planet. Doris Stokes used to say that if you can make it in this World, then the next one will be very much easier! I wonder? What will be will be. For those of us who acknowledge the other side whilst living a grounded life here on Earth, we have already embraced the process of survival, and we can also subscribe to the magic that is brought to us through spiritual belief. That doesn’t mean that we act like sheep, since each and every one of us has a separate journey to make, and it is on this journey of life that we encounter that which we do. We may not choose to wear our highly prized individual spirituality as a badge, but we may refer to each twist along the pathway that we tread with impunity. If we fall over then it is certain that if we need help there will come someone who will pick us up. Sending out a message for rescue means that our faith will be rewarded, and that somebody will hear our call. On the other hand if your recovery is personal you can pick yourself up, and Spirit will restore and strengthen. Sometimes we need the personal attention that actions of direct love can bring us.
Kenny’s Postbag
Having a loving respect for all therefore greatly strengthens the most difficult of journeys. For those who have suffered often the response afterwards is to see it as being a lesson in life, maybe one which we particularly do not wish to repeat; but which gave us strength and taught us a lesson, albeit the hard way! In these difficult times when War seems to be raging in every corner of the World, and when suffering comes directly too to our doorsteps surely there must be something very wrong? The changing shifts of the World and the new processes of famine, disease and warfare can render us helpless to offer aid in any way. This isn’t so. Feeling empowered to offer prayer or to send healing and positive thoughts out to those who need to receive them is better than doing just nothing. It helps by sending a positive charge into the energy forces of this Planet. When Worldwide actions of negative forces are analysed they are wrapped up in greed and stealth, ego and power trips. If we can use the goodness we have within us in a positive way we are fighting fear and dread, and substituting only good, whilst simultaneously connecting with our spiritual selves. We are Spirit living in a body, which is our vehicle in this World, and so, please, do not be afraid to use your spirituality wisely for the good of those who both deserve and need it, as well as for yourself. The World could be such a wonderful place for all if the abundance was merely shared out fairly and squarely. In the meantime help anyway you can!

Kenny, there is so much suffering in the World. As a Spiritual person I often feel helpless to do anything and end up doing nothing. I understand that we are gifted to have a contact with Spirit, but we are defenceless when it comes to doing anything that can help with current conflicts and the problems coming our way. Kali We are blessed with spiritual energy and such a gift enables us to do a lot more than we think. The power of positive thoughts and of prayers bring so much comfort to those who need it, and we should be unafraid to do what we can. If we switch off because we feel we cannot cope with the multi burdens of the World of now; and do nothing because we feel we cannot win, then we are sad losers. I for one won’t take that title in any form, whilst I walk the face of this troubled Earth. I will do what I can, even if it is a drop in the ocean, it’s something! ACROSS ACROSS 6. Who would be a podiatrist? WITHOUT DOUBT the question I get asked most at work is why would you want to be a podiatrist and look at smelly feet all day?
The question is often a lightly veiled way of asking do you have a foot fetish or something and some people even ask this outright. This is usually followed by: have you always wanted to do this since you were at school? This normally happens about half way through the first consultation. They have already told me what the nature of the problem is, I have taken a medical history and asked them questions about their symptoms and I am probably doing some kind of treatment. I suppose the question is fair enough. On the face of it looking at feet all day is not the most glamorous way to spend your day. Well in reverse order this is what I normally tell people. I haven’t always wanted to do this. When I left school I trained as a dental technician and made false teeth until I was in my mid-twenties. No, I do not have a foot fetish. I really enjoy my work. Most people I see come to me in pain and go away feeling better. So there is a lot of job satisfaction and people are usually pleased to see me. There is also a tremendous amount of variation in what I do each day, from nail cutting and corns to looking at people’s biomechanics and gait analysis, minor surgery under local anesthetic for removal of part of or whole toe nails, assessment and treatment of

This is a right stinker of a story! BACK IN the 1950s the Elizabeth Arden cosmetic store was the place to be seen - even the glamorous Marilyn Monroe was happy to be photographed making purchases in their shops ... But oh how the mighty have fallen! The company’s quarterly pre-tax loss in the three months to the end of June was $81m (£48m), its worst ever result. But it’s the reason why that’s really worrying. The modern world is full of folks pulling stroke after stroke in the pursuit of a fast and easy buck, and it is this sad and sorrowful fact at the background of EA’s almighty tumble. As recently as a couple of years ago the cosmetic giants made a conscious decision to invest heavily in celebrity-linked perfumes, and handed the likes of Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift masses of cash to stick their names and faces all over their socalled personalised products. But how did their research not uncover the glaring fact that all singers go in and out of cool faster than a rat down a drainpipe! The individual, or individuals, who came up with the bright idea of lacing the pockets of these pop peeps as well as convincing the EA board they would get a massive return on their investment could well now be cleaning out the toilets. Elizabeth Arden was founded in 1910 and became the glamorous go-to shop for the famous names mentioned above, and just six years ago in 2008 actress Catherine Zeta-Jones opened its new Fifth Avenue flagship store. In order to give you a way of measuring the extent of the EA disaster, rival cosmetic giants Estee Lauder saw net sales increase to show a profit of £1.64bn in the same quarter EA lost £48m ... oh dear … oh dear … oh dear! MILEY CYRUS, booty shaker and full on in-yourface sex-machine since we hit 2014, finds herself in deep doo-doo yet again, this time with the government commission of the Dominican Republic. She has been booked to do a concert in the country on 13th September but the authorities are blocking it on the grounds of “acts that go against our morals and customs, which are punishable by Dominican law.” Whatever can they mean?

THERE’S A very glamorous and exclusive apartment block in Washington called Escala, but its exclusivity is currently under the cosh as endless streams of women from 1950 are mad to spend the night in one particular apartment. Why? Is a fair enough question! E L James’ 50 Shades of Grey was filmed there! The estate agent for the block said: “All these women want to rent the place!” Escala apartment rentals have since risen by over 75%.
Celebrity Clips DR WHO returned to the telly last Saturday evening and already there are rumours that the Doctor’s sidekick Clara Oswald played by Jenny Coleman will be leaving at Xmas. Jenny herself was pretty coy when asked about it on ITV’s This Morning … So! Is it just another load of old twaddle to get us all watching the show or what! Peeps who like the show watch it, so what is all this about?
COME SUNDAY 14th September, a statue of Amy Winehouse will be erected in Camden Town, London - the place where she was born and raised. The original plan was for the statue to be placed in the Roundhouse music venue where Amy made her name, but it will now be in the nearby Stables Market with her father Mitch saying “Now Amy will oversee the comings and goings of her home town forever.” Heartbreaking stuff...

Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin
Indefinite time in the past For a few weeks we have been looking at a verb tense which, for convenience, we have called the “recent past” tense. In English this is made up of “have/has + past participle” and in Spanish we use the appropriate form of “haber” + past participle”. An example of the “recent past” use in English would be: “I have written the first part of this article”. This is something I “have done” recently, and which is affecting the present in some way, as opposed to something I “did” at a specific time in the past, as in “last week I wrote an article”. One of the sentences we used previously as an example of this tense was: “¿Has estado en Inglaterra?” meaning: “Have you been to England?” Now if you think about it, this sentence could refer to two different time frames. We could use it to refer to the recent past. For example if we were speaking to an English neighbour we hadn’t seen for a couple of weeks and wondered where they had got to recently. On the other hand, imagine you were chatting to a Spanish person and telling them where you came from. If you then asked: “Have you been to England?” you would not be
enquiring about whether they had visited England recently, you would be asking if they had ever been to England in their lives. If the answer was just “yes”, you would still have no idea whether this visit occurred this year, last year or twenty years ago. The only difference we sometimes make when asking this kind of question is to add the word “ever”. This underlines the idea of “any time in the past”, without changing the tense used. We might well use this question in our conversations with Spanish people we are getting to know. The way to say “ever” in Spanish is “alguna vez” (any time). So “Have you been to England?” – “¿Has estado en Inglaterra?” could also be “Have you ever been to England?” – “¿Has estado alguna vez en Inglaterra?”. We can now see clearly that the “recent past” tense can also be used to talk about “indefinite” times in the past; experiences in the past in which no reference is made to exactly when they occurred. Here are some more examples in English and Spanish. The words “ever” and “alguna vez” are not obligatory and sometimes sound better in one
language than the other.
¿Has visto la película Gone with the Wind? Have you ever seen the film Gone with the Wind?” To which we might reply: “Sí, la he visto” or “No, no la he visto nunca” or “Sí, la he visto muchas veces” (I have seen it many times) or “No me acuerdo” (I don’t remember – although that would be unlikely I think!) Incidentally, if you really want to ask this question, it might be useful to know that the Spanish translation is “Lo que el viento se llevó”. Has cantado alguna vez en público? Have you ever sung in public? Sí, he cantado en público, en un bar Karaoke en Playa Flamenca. Just giving you some suggestions here. ¿Has conocido alguna vez a una persona famosa? Have you ever met a famous person? Sí, mi padre era actor de Shakespeare. Now, I’m getting silly. See you next week!

The MABS Ice Bucket Challenge THE RECENT Ice Bucket Challenge sweeping the internet and international news has arrived in Murcia. Many who have been nominated to do the Ice Bucket Challenge have chosen MABS as their charity. It started originally in the US with donations going to Motor Neurone Disease (known as ALS in America) and when it arrived in the UK Macmillan were the main beneficiary so it stands to reason that the people in our region would choose MABS. Many people have been uploading their videos to the MABS Murcia/Mar Menor facebook page using hashtag #icebucketchallenge4mabs A spokesperson for MABS, said “Awareness of MABS is higher than ever due to the power of the internet, especially Facebook, and we thank every single person who did the Ice Bucket Challenge for MABS. Every Euro goes towards helping cancer patients and their families to make life a little bit easier at what is a very frightening time. To donate or upload your video visit: https://www.facebook.com/ mabsmurciamarmenor

EL TORO Carvery, near Torremendo, is the base for a new project by retired photographer Carl Eagle, who built his house by the lakeside. The huge lake, with its mountain backdrop, provides wonderful views for photography enthusiasts. The Charity Fundraiser at El Toro on 6th September marks the launch of the Photography Walks, aimed at keen amateur photographers, and Carl will be on hand that day to deal with any enquiries. Guided walks may be arranged for parties of 10-20 people and individuals who can join a group on the first Wednesday of each month. The cost is 5€ per person.

Spanish commercial drone ban
RECENTLY WE wrote an editorial about how people/businesses are using Drones for hobbies/commercial projects. Not long after the editorial was published, we learned about a ban that had been placed on commercial drone usage in Spain. News of the ban brought a conversation to our Facebook page at: www.facebook.com/TechBubbleInfo where we briefly discussed the ban and some possible outcomes/areas of law that even personal usage of drones may be affected by. On April 7th 2014, a memo released by the La Agencia Estatal de Seguridad Aérea (AESA) ( The State Aviation Safety Agency ) said that to avoid misunderstandings the use of these types of machines for commercial purposes is not aloud and never has been. One of the concerns that came up with one of our Facebook fans was that possibly a privacy law which relates to the use of dash-cams in Spain, could actually affects hobbyists that use drones. For now, if you have a drone that takes videos or photos it is best to seek legal advice before using it in public. We will try to keep you as up to date as possible through our social pages and website, feel free to join in the conversations if you have thoughts about any of our editorials.

Pop-up websites
DEAR AUNTY: My problem is that every time I go to a website of my choice another website loads alongside it, mainly sites with advertising. I run Firefox as my web browser and have tried ad-block plus, malwarebytes, and c/cleaner all to no avail. Any suggestions? Thanks, John
Aunty says: You may have a “rogue” add on that is causing the advertising window to open. Go to Tools, and Add Ons. You may find an addon that is installed that may be causing the problems. Disable and uninstall. Restart Firefox. Alternatively you can simply reset Firefox to its default state, which usually fixes most problems. Click the menu button and then click Help From the Help menu choose Troubleshooting Information If you’re unable to access the Help menu, type about:support in your address bar to bring up the Troubleshooting information page Click the Reset Firefox… button in the upper-right corner of the Troubleshooting Information page To continue, click Reset Firefox in the confirmation window that opens Firefox will close and be reset. When it’s done, a window will list the information that was imported. Click Finish and Firefox will open. It may also be an idea to go to Control Panel and Programs and have a look to see if there have been any “rogue” programs installed recently that may be causing the problem. Most of these issues are installed when people simply use the “default” installation method when installing software, particularly “free” software. The default installation options usually install more than you want, like tool bars, or advertising code. So always use the “expert” or “custom” install methods, as this will usually give you the options not to install these “rogues”.
Screen problems HI AUNTY: I have a zoostorm freedom 10” netbook. This was working well until yesterday. I opened it and the screen was flickering and had a couple of lines across it. Now the screen has lost a quarter of viewing area from the left. I cannot get usage from the whole screen. Do you have a suggestion as to why this has happened? Also, the time has to be reset every time I start-up and sometimes during usage it goes out of sync. This has been the case for at least a year and I have used the PC normally. Ray Aunty says: Your screen image issue can be down to a number of reasons: Your screen is failing Your graphics card is failing You have a loose cable between your graphics card and screen If your clock is always going back to the “default time”, and you are repeatedly resetting this, it sounds like the battery that provides power to the motherboard memory has failed. A new battery may be required. Alternatively, your clock is on the wrong time zone.

Gadget Inspector Investigates:
Thomson Wireless Headphones THIS WEEK the Inspector takes a look at the Thomson WHP3001BK Wireless Headphones. Headphones have been around since someone somewhere decided it was a good idea to not have to listen to other people’s choice of music. They have gone through many incarnations resulting in today´s micro-bud devices that are worn in ear and connected to the digital player of choice. But a lot of them still have a basic problem, aside from the music being played on them – and that’s the fact that you’re physically connected to the music source. What if you want to play music on a non-portable player? Well, all you need are the Thomson Wireless Headphones. Incorporating wireless technology the Thomson Wireless Headphones automatically select from 3 different transmission channels to avoid
interference with other devices allowing you to move about and listen to your sound source. With a maximum range of you remain within the maximum range of 100m outside or 20-30m inside. The base station allows connection from a number of sources using the full size headphone socket adapter, 3mm audio cable and stereo RCA cables included in the package. The base-station is connected to the mains via a power adapter and recharges the batteries of the headphones when they are placed back in the holder. And with a single charge of the headphones lasting up to eight hours you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy your music. The headphones can be switched on and off and have an elastic headband and generously padded ear cushions to ensure
comfort during long periods of use. They even incorporate a volume control so you don´t need to go back to your music source to adjust the level! The Inspectors Verdict: The Thomson WHP3001BK Wireless Headphones do exactly what it says on the tin (box) – they’re headphones and wireless! And with eight hours of use between charges and a decent range you don´t need to annoy the other house inhabitants with Motorhead played at maximum volume. Please note the following is for information and is not intended as an advertisement - visit www.gadget-hound.co.uk/thomsonheadphones/ to purchase the Thomson WHP3001BK Wireless Headphones for 38€. Please note the power adapter has a UK plug which will require a Spanish 2-pin adapter.

Focus on Golf Powered by Campbell Lamont Golf, partnered by BayRadio
Each sport has its own individual superstars THE ICONs that define the essence of the game.
By Tony Myles IN FORMULA One there have been many great drivers but no one greater and more beloved than Michael Schumacher. Tennis has had several players who have become personalities and have raised the profile of the game, but for strength, charisma and talent there is only one contender, Rafael Nadal. Boxing has produced some great fighters at all levels and yet in fifty years there has been nobody even close to capturing the public affection and respect enjoyed by Mohamed Ali. In the world of Golf we have seen stars arriving and departing with each decade and if in applying this ‘Superstar’ accolade you are seeking durability, which is surely a prerequisite, then one major contender must be our close friend and star, Jose Maria Olazabal. Very few local golfers appreciate that more than twenty years ago he has approached by Pepe Bano, the owner of La Sella Golf Resort, to help him convert an open area of former farm land and orange groves into a challenging and attractive top quality golf course. He accepted the invitation and this was to be his first venture into golf course design. He was subsequently invited back just a few years ago to carry on the task with the design for the further nine hole extension . The very high standard maintained by his creation means that this area enjoys twelve months of popular golf tourism and is rapidly become a default option for many groups from all over Europe. So it was appropriate that his contribution should be remembered in a durable and visible manner. Hence the naming of Carrer Jose Marie Olazabal which now leads
down from the main road to the club house at La Sella. It was officially opened just over one week ago and warmly appreciated by the hundreds who attended the ceremony. Jose Maria was visibly touched by the honour and commented - “We have spent so many years together, and although I received other prizes, this has a very special meaning for me. It´s so impressive to look back and see what we have achieved. What was here 26 years ago and what is here now”. He went on to say - “it´s a great honour for me to be awarded with having a road named after me, especially because of the specific place, which has played an enormous role in my personal and professional career”. Pepe Bañó, President of the La Sella Golf Resort Board, pointed out the huge benefit obtained by the whole Marina Alta region thanks to the work carried out by José María Olazábal and his permanent support.. “We were looking for a professional to design our course and golf facilities that enhance the tourist offer of Denia, Jesús Pobre and the whole surrounding area. By that time golf was taboo, but today it´s a facility that helps to create a year round tourism resort, and it is sustainable and necessary for this sector”, Pepe Bañó, furthermore stressed that “To name this road after you, the Marina Alta region wishes to express its gratitude, which now is reflected forever.” Each year Jose Maria and his close friend Miguel Angel Jiminez spend several day in La Sella providing free coaching to a group of aspiring youngsters from the Golf Academy.
He2ad Head Tony M - Did you see much of Jose Maria when he was here recently? Campbell - Yes quite a bit. We had a long chat and he was asking how the shops were doing. Tony M - Did you get any tips from him? Campbell - Well I did learn something very interesting. Tony M - Go on then share it with us! Campbell - He said he loves listening to our show on Bay Radio. Tony M - REALLY? He said that? Campbell - Absolutely would I lie to you? Tony M - Well you once said I was one of the best golfers you had ever met. Campbell - I rest my case.
Tune into Campbell and Tony every Saturday on Bay Radio. Bay Radio is the Leading English language radio station in Europe. Focus on Golf 11.00 - 12.00 on Bay Radio

Volvo V40 D3 R-Design
LASER RADAR: It sounds like something from a sci-fi thriller but we’re actually talking about technology fitted to Volvo cars, those traditionally staid and dull vehicles, favoured by the ‘flat cap brigade’. Today’s hip and trendy Volvos are anything but and are packed with sophisticated technology that keeps the brand at the forefront of car design and manufacture. Its laser radar systems are a key ingredient. I’m testing the V40 D3 R-Design, a performance five door hatchback. And it’s fitted with an intelligent yet simple to operate cruise control. As you might expect this keeps the car travelling at the desired speed but unlike most systems it also measures the distance of the car in front. This ensures that it keeps the Volvo at a safe distance behind. It does this by automatically braking and accelerating thanks to the information relayed by its clever laser radar. This distance can be changed from reasonably close to quite far away depending on driving conditions. In theory this is a valuable tool that should mean that the driver can relax. Not so though. My test takes place in torrential downpours and high winds and I discover that the radar is not infallible. This becomes particularly noticeable while at 70mph round a bend on a dual carriageway. The Volvo is in the outside lane but on approaching the bend there is a car on the inside and the radar picks this up and brakes abruptly despite there being no cars in front of me. This annoys me and I cancel the function. On another occasion we are on a straight road and high winds cause a flashing red warning bar on the driver’s side of the dashboard to light up – accompanied by a really loud beep - for absolutely no reason whatsoever. My sleeping children wake up. High side winds seem to completely throw the radar and despite there being no traffic in front the Volvo brakes sharply from 70mph to 50mph. That said this cruise control is quite impressive when you bear in mind that it can be set at say 50mph and if a sharp incline appears the resulting gear change does not cancel out the cruise control. Often this is the case in many other vehicles. Another safety feature is the Blind Spot Information System. There’s a little light on the inside of the wing mirror that glows red whenever a vehicle appears in the blind spot. This is useful because the design is prone to blind spots especially at the rear making it a little awkward to reverse but there are helpful sensors fitted that bleep to alert the driver of nearby obstacles.
