THE CHRISTMAS party season may well be a time of fun and joy for many, but it is also a time when we must increase our awareness of the risks on the roads, and especially the dangers of consuming alcohol or drugs.

Santa breaking bad FOUR BANDITS disguised as Santa Claus escaped with valuable electronic gadgets after a raid on the Apple Store in Valencia city centre. by Edward Graham The robbers burst into the shop and ordered terrified customers and staff to the ground before loading up with tablets and other devices and escaping in a stolen car, driven by a fifth member of the gang. The heist took place last Thursday afternoon; a national holiday but the stores were open for Christmas shoppers. The car was stolen from the Manises area of Valencia the previous evening and was later found burnt out in the town of Turia â&#x20AC;&#x201C; police say the vehicle was torched to remove clues that might help reveal the identities of the gang. And a police spokesman said the criminals took advantage of Christmas to use their disguise and had acted with great speed, both in grabbing the goods and fleeing the area.

Raffl e just the ticket for PAWS THE CHRISTMAS Raffl e run by animal charity PAWS-PATAS has raised over 3,026� with supporters winning a treasure trove of prizes. BY JACK TROUGHTON BIG-HEARTED Mary Munson scooped a 100€ note – donated by the Rose and Crown Pub in Mojacar – and promptly donated the cash back to the cause; a wonderful gesture. Other prizes included a cane picnic hamper and cool box; hand crafter and semi-precious stone bracelets; a Christmas hamper; ladies and gents dressing gowns; wallets and bags; make-up; glasses; and wine. The “staggering” total – twice as large as the 2015 draw – means 800€ can be paid towards the muchneeded screening of the cat enclosure at the PAWS-PATAS shelter, the remainder helping to fund the ongoing feline neutering programme. RTN was told that Bunny Willis – pictured with Lynne Hart picking the winners at the Mojacar shop – and her team had worked hard selling tickets at a number of events across

the region. And a spokesman for the charity said: “A big thank-you to all those who purchased tickets and in particular, to those who kindly gave cash donations. “And a rather special ‘thank-you’ to Bunny’s husband Trevor who loaded and unloaded their car on numerous occasions to show the wondrous prizes to be won.” PAWS-PATAS relies on the help of the public and its team of volunteers to survive and to continue helping dogs and cats ﬁnd a ‘forever home’. The charity’s shop in Vera is currently staging a 50% sale, with genuine reductions on all items. It is now to be called the ‘3/2/1 PAWS-PATAS

Ain’t nothing like the Dames THE DAMES in Spain marked the start of the Christmas season in Mojacar with its now traditional Carol Concert joined by the town band. The association has over 60 members - mainly British residents – and has been a feature of Mojacar for over 30 years. The concert, along with fund raising throughout the year for charities, is now an ‘official’ start to the winter festivities for the large expat community and always enjoys a huge following. The Dames and the band played a selection of traditional carols bringing together different cultures which the audience thoroughly enjoyed; and everyone anticipated the raffle with prizes donated by Mojácar companies and local residents. And the concert was attended by the Mayor of Mojácar, Rosmari Cano and the Councillor for Non-Spanish Speaking Residents, María Luisa Pérez. They were keen to stress the harmony that exists locally between the communities of Spanish and foreign residents, whatever their country of origin.

Merry Christmas everyone! THE TEAM at Age Support Almanzora’s shop in Arboleas wishes all customers a Merry Christmas – and hopes for continued support in 2017. The charity volunteers appreciate the donations and backing they have received over the last 12 months – a busy year for the shop in Placeta Arias. And the team hope there are people wanting to join a happy band; just visit the shop between 10am and 1.30pm Monday to Friday – new faces can help with larger donations like furniture which can now be collected for sale. During 2016, Age Support achieved a number of goals; including the opening of a new Information Centre on Avenido Lepanto in Albox, which is staff ed fromTuesday to Friday mornings. This too needs more volunteers to help provide support to older people living in the area. Over the last 12 months the charity has have added to its equipment that can be borrowed - including wheelchairs and a hospital-type bed. Cathy, Chair of Age Support Almanzora, looks forward to further developments next year such as a hospital library service and at the recent Christmas lunch for staff (pictured), introduced Maggie, who will lead the fund-raising for the charity next year. A word from the Ed... A Christmas carol THE BOXES are rapidly being opened on the RTN office Advent Calendar in the countdown to Christmas – some mysteriously missing the chocolate – and the paper itself is in festive spirit; packed with reports and pictures of festive events. There’s a mass of goodwill being spread around by bighearted and generous expats, the feel good vibe that should be bottled and sold; a project we are still working on at RTN Towers. Two stories in this week’s paper light up a winter’s day. On Tuesday it was the 10th annual party for the youngsters from the children’s home Preventorio de Gandia and next week husband and wife Jon and Cassie are off to cook for 65 men in the Franciscan Refuge and Hospice – taking a festive spread and sacks of donated presents.

THE CHRISTMAS party season may well be but it is also a time when we must increase the roads, and especially the dangers of con AS WORKERS, families and friends all come together to celebrate, it is perhaps easier to become a little complacent and have a “small” tipple, but we must remember, above all, that consuming alcohol or drugs before driving greatly increases the risks, which is why the penalties are so severe, to serve as a deterrent to those who risk their own lives and the lives of others. For that reason, all of this week, the Guardia Civil traffic department, supported by National, Regional and Local police forces, will be carrying out intensified and extensive checks on alcohol and drug use on the roads of Spain, every day, around the clock. The campaign runs until Sunday with officers out in force throughout the day, keeping a watchful eye out for those who may have been drinking, or consuming drugs. Although it is common for the officers to seek out habitual offenders, this season also usually means an increase in those who would not normally drink and drive, and so they too pose a significant risk. The latest figures extracted from the most recent data available suggests that there may be around 12,000 drivers who met this continually dangerous criteria. So far this year, the figure of those detected is approaching 100,000 drivers who not only risk their own but the lives of many innocent victims who all too often leave the scene of the carnage facing a life dealing with serious injuries and, on too numerous occasions, leaving the friends and families of loved ones having to deal with their death. According to the annual report of the National Institute of Toxicology, the 39.09% of deceased drivers displayed the presence of alcohol or drugs in their blood. The figure rises to 40% when pedestrians are analysed. Even the smallest amount of alcohol or drugs can affect driving ability and so, despite Spain having considerably lower maximum

This year, officers from the Guardia Civil in Torrevieja have been collaborating with taxi drivers on the Orihuela Costa to join forces and encourage the use of taxis. N332 has also created some graphics to support the campaign. Making the choice between two vehicles, the police car on the left or the taxi on the right, the N332 campaign slogan is #chooseright. Spain seduces banks SPAIN IS attempting to attract banks to Madrid from the City of London in the post-Brexit world with a package of incentives including tax breaks. The government has put together a task force and given it the mission statement to get finance houses to move south. It is reported to have been in touch with US and Japanese banks such as Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan and Nomura. The aim is to get City lenders to move a part of their business into European Union territory after Britain leaves and as well as offering perks; the banks will be offered a streamlined dealings with regulators. However, Madrid faces competition from

Dublin, Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Milan â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and even Luxembourg, Bratislava, and La Valletta in Malta hope to offer the finance companies a new home.

Partners look for investment BENISSA AND Teulada-Moraira town halls have signed up as partners for new joint investment to help fund sustainable urban development. Juan Bautista Rosello, Mayor of Benissa and Teulada-Moraira Mayor Carlos Linares have signed the paperwork to apply for a 4.8 million Euro grant. And if successful, it will finance such things as sustainable transport, the promotion of green zones, energy efficiency, and new technology.

A helping hand Charity TORREVIEJA IS “proud” to make more of the resort accessible to people with disabilities making life a little easier. by Jack Troughton

MEMBERS OF The Plaza Golf Society enjoyed a successful Charity Day and Christmas party – raising 651€ for La Finca Castellena. It was party time for the players despite the wet weather and a host of prizes were won for both golfing prowess and seasonal costumes and the society thanks all those who donated prizes for the raffle and golf. The town hall has installed special concrete walkways to help people access the sea at the beaches of El Cura, Los Naufragos and Los Locos; a pioneering move in Valencia. And the main tourist office in Torrevieja has been specially adapted to welcome blind people. El Cura Playa already has the 37m walkway installed, the improvements to Los Naufragos and Los Locos – 78m and 33m respectively – are to be installed in the coming days; providing a link from the promenade to the sea. And it is also planned to install shaded areas where people can take a comfortable rest, and adapted showers. According to the town hall, Torrevieja now has the most accessible beaches in Spain and everything will be tried and tested before the new holiday season starts next Easter. BY JACK TROUGHTON CASSIE Leary and husband Jon Meek have set themselves a real Christmas challenge - cooking a treat for a ‘family’ of 65 merry gentlemen at a Costa Blanca men’s refuge. They have carefully prepared a festive menu for Christmas Eve – the traditional day of Spanish celebration – and will be bearing gifts for everyone sitting down to the feast. And Cassie and Jon will have a couple of helpers in the kitchen at the Franciscan Refuge and Hospice in Gandia; Cassie’s sister Joanne and her friend Fi. Naturally, getting in the Christmas spirit also means dressing up. Cassie said: “Jon is Father Christmas, I am an Elf, Joanne is an Elf and Fi is Mrs Christmas and we have Christmas hats for all the men to wear.” Cassie became involved cooking at the refuge in memory of her father Terry. He was a member of Pego Golf Society when it chose the home as its chosen charity, and the society regularly took clothes and took a turn making Saturday lunch. “When he passed away I asked people to donate rather than buy fl owers – that was the fi rst time I visited, I took clothes and 1,200 euros and since then we have been going about four times a year.” Cassie works at Justin’s in Moraira as an eyelash extension technician and since November clients at the salon have been leaving donations. “I thought rather than ask people for money I would do a reverse Advent Calendar – asking people to put food or a luxury item into the hamper at Justin’s; we have had to empty it several times because people are so generous.” LUXURY And she said some left basics like shower gel, a razor or toothbrush, others gave a luxury item like chocolates. “One lady, for example, not only brought something for the hamper but also 65 wrapped presents; that’s out of her own money.” And Cassie’s best friend, Denia-based yoga teacher Nikki Bates also asked her clients to contribute, gathering “a ton of stuff .” Matthews the Butcher in Pedregeur has supplied the meat and donated a Serrano ham. “That’s a real luxury item,” added Cassie. “Most people have given something at Justin’s; a friend of a client gave 50 euros. People are so kind, it’s amazing.” Cooking for 65 is an expensive business so a traditional turkey dinner was ruled out, the chefs instead making a “Christmassy pie”. The meal will start with roasted tomato and garlic soup, the main course is turkey, leek and stuffi ng pie with all the trimmings,

and dessert is a ‘festive chocolate brownie´ - all accompanied by lashings of Christmas music.

“Jon and I are really looking forward to it, even more than Christmas Day in our own home in Pego,” she added.

Cassie said she wanted to thank her clients and all the clients at Justin’s for entering the Christmas spirit and being so generous – and the hamper will remain in the salon until 22nd December.

“When we go to Gandia we will have to take two cars. There’s all the hamper stuff and people are also giving clothes for the men…and there is also tons of food.”

Legion enjoys ‘Top Gun’ MEMBERS OF the Hondon Valley Branch of the Royal British Legion were left flying high after a visit to a top NATO base and the chance to inspect 35 different fighter aircraft. by Jack Troughton The group visited the Tactical Leadership Programme (TLP) based at Los Llanos military airbase in Albacete; which delivers training courses for NATO’s Top gun pilots and support teams. The trip took off after a visit to the branch by Sgt Dai Williams of the Royal Air Force and he hosted the party through an open day at the airbase. After a safety briefing, the group was able to visit the flight line and the fighters from different NATO air forces. Members were held spellbound as pilots and ground crew gave guided tours of their aircraft; answering questions and helping people into the cockpit for a unique photo opportunity. And during the visit, Corporal Simmons RAF was able to present the unit’s Poppy Appeal donations to the branch (pictured) in front of a Hawk jet. Little donkey BENITACHELL TASTED some festive spirit with a crowded Christmas market packed with stalls enjoyed by visitors. There were games and workshops for youngsters and everyone enjoyed the traditional donkey with a pack load of gifts adding to the Christmas atmosphere.

A Christmas cracker! IT WAS party time for 52 very excited youngsters on Tuesday as the children from the Preventorio de Gandia celebrated Christmas in style. by JACK TROUGHTON A Minion, Olaf and Elsa from Frozen, and special guest Father Christmas were all waiting to greet the kids as they arrived at Javea’s football ground for a feast of fun. It was the 10th year Bay Radio has organised the children’s party, an annual event that now triggers the start of the festive season on the Costa Blanca – and every 12 months big-hearted listeners dig deep to give these special boys and girls a day to remember. Organiser Silvia Barnish orchestrates a small army of Santa’s little and big helpers. Neil Pettman of BounceAbout brought the bouncy castle together with a popcorn and candy fl oss machine, while Liz and Lee of The Photo Lounge pro-

vided lasting fun souvenirs. On the menu was chocolate, a sensible bocadillo, and more chocolate – including a cake baked by Joy Williams and eight-year-old daughter Megan, which was sliced for pudding and washed down with ice-cream; all insuring a sugar rush of energy. It was the fi rst time Joy, from Orba, had been to the party. “I started making the cake on Saturday and fi nished at 3am this morning – Megan made the snowmen and Rudolph; she always helps me in the kitchen.” And once again the highlight for the youngsters was receiving an individual sack of presents from the man in red. As Papa Noel handed one little boy his loot, the youngster politely chose a present thinking he had to

share...the look of wonder when he was assured they were all his was a joy to witness. Silvia – dressed as Snow White - told RTN: “This is all about the children today; the adults are prepared to get dressed up and look silly and get stuck in and the kids just love it. “My Christmas starts after this. I do it because I know these children; I go to the Preventorio all year round, on the last Thursday of the month without fail; if they need something they come to me and we use the Bay Radio charity account.” And Sylvia thanked Bay listeners for their support, including everyone at the Albir Christmas fair organised by Eventos Bombon from Benidorm; and the members of Javea International Baptist Church – who spent a week wrapping presents.

Christmas giveaway THE MASONIC Home of Valencia has made its traditional Christmas donations to good causes with a total of 10,000€ benefitting young and old. by Jack Troughton Board member Jenny Hart and Secretary Bernard Wilson made a 5,000€ gift to Bay Radio for its seasonal appeal for the Preventorio de Gandia children’s home and gave a further 5,000€ to the Teulada Alzheimer Centre. Ramble on THE EASY Ramblers – part of the Humanists of Murcia – enjoyed a final walk of 2016 on Saturday with 30 members and five dogs heading from La Azohia to Campillo de Adentro. by Edward Graham A refreshment stop was held at the village well at Pozo de Campillo – where the group was able to discuss the latest ‘humanist news’ including concerns over Northern Ireland’s abortion laws – said to breach the European Convention on human rights – and a survey showing the majority of British Muslims do not support ‘faith schools’. It was then just a short stroll to journey’s end at the Campillo de Adentro social centre and a direct route back to La Azohia and lunch. Drone in near miss

SHOCKED CREW on a Heathrow-bound passenger jet say a radio controlled drone passed within 20m – just 66ft – from the airliner. by Jack Troughton

The plane was above Biggin Hill, descending into Heathrow, when the football-sized drone was spotted as it passed the right wing, travelling “very quickly” said the UK Airprox Board (UKAB). And although the Airbus A320 crew saw it, there would not have been time to take avoiding action to prevent a collision and potential disaster, the investigators said. Police were alerted and had attempted to trace the person flying the drone but failed to locate the operator. The drone, which had a flashing magenta light, was spotted by the Airbus crew while the plane was at an altitude of 11,000ft on 4th August. UKAB said in its report of the incident that the drone and its operator had endangered the lives of those on board the aircraft as a collision “had only narrowly been avoided.”

Strolling with Santa THE PINK Ladies and Panthers seventh annual Santa Walk on Sunday raised 1,056€ for cancer charity AECC. The walk was cancelled seven days earlier because of bad weather but everyone enjoyed taking part in sunshine last weekend. It was the third year the walk left Zenia Boulevard and the organisers thanked people for taking part and the donations for Reach Out and the Elche Children’s Home. Simon Morton and Dan Davy of Sunshine FM for provided the entertainment in the Boulevard and on the walk; while Trainer John was thanked for the loan of his pick-up truck which served as Santa’s sleigh for the day. Property deals and bridging the finance gap PROPERTY DEALS without the full asking price or a loan are possible under Spanish law with the agreement of both parties and the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Resolutive Conditionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. WHITE AND Baos Lawyers receive inquiries from buyers and sellers where, although they agree on the conditions of the sale, the buyer cannot immediately pay the full price and has problems obtaining financing - usually a mortgage loan that allows the purchase in the usual way. And if the buyer needs to defer part of the payment because he does not have all the money, and the seller needs guarantees to be able to recover the property should the full price agreed is not finally paid, a solution could be the resolutive condition. This guarantees the full payment with a resolutive or termination condition; stating that the buyer defer part of the price, and in case of not paying in full as agreed, the sale will be resolved and terminated, and the seller will be able to recover the property sold. The main function of the resolutive condition is to ensure, on the one hand, that the buyer can have possession and use of the property even if he has not paid the full price. And on the other hand, that the seller can recover the property if the buyer does not fulfill with the agreed payment. In the Spanish civil code, the resolutive condition in the case of the sale of real estate property includes this condition according to article 1504 of the Civil Code. Therefore, it is advisable in case of not paying the entire price at the signature of the sale before a notary, that the outstanding amount is guaranteed by a resolutive condition, which if it is properly set up, will be recorded in the Land Registry as a real guarantee of payment linked to the property - similar to a mortgage - so if the buyer does not comply with the agreement, ownership of the property itself will return to the seller. It is very simple to indicate how these deferred payments will

be made, the dates, and where possible, the complete details of the bank account in which payments must be paid to. It is also possible to word the resolutive condition in such a way that once the deferred money is paid and after a sufficient period, it is automatically canceled, without having to go to the notary and sign a new deed, or incur in more expenses.

Interest Rates, where and when ? As I write this article (13th December) we are probably about to witness the first move in U.S. Interest rates in a year. Markets expect a quarter percentage hike this week, with the possibility of a further two in 2017. On this side of the pond, the U.K. economy is still looking robust after Brexit and indeed the economy is growing faster than forecasted, will the Bank of England look to raise rates soon? Unlikely Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m afraid, there will be little appetite to put the economy under pressure, at this time, and looks more likely that U.K. interest rates will likely remain unchanged until the latter half of 2018. Meanwhile in La La Land (the E.U.) the European Central Bank has extended its quantitative easing stance further and the outlook remains uncertain, growth in Europe remains sluggish at best (although Spain is doing rather better than the rest) so no prospect of higher rates here. Unfortunately, not a great deal of good news for savers then, equities still remain number one for providing growth and for income there are several well run funds out there providing excellent returns in the current environment. On the foreign exchange side, sterling is currently in the high 1.19â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s after briefly breaking through the 1.20 barrier, still plenty of room on the upside there in my opinion, maybe 1.25 in the coming months? Who knows but that would certainly help relieve the pressure on people receiving U.K. pensions after the depressingly low rate of exchange over the last six months or so. Have a Harley Christmas

THE ICONIC roar of a group of powerful Harley Davidson motorcycles always demands attention and when everyone mounted on the gleaming machines is dressed as Santa; it’s a real head turner. by JACK TROUGHTON MARINA ALTA-based owners club ‘Free Spirits’ staged its annual ‘Christmas Ride Out’ on Sunday and 21 machines and 33 riders and passengers were specially dressed up for the occasion. RTN was invited along for the ride and took the pillion on Barry Haylor’s black and chrome 1,450cc Heritage Softail for an enjoyable spin along the coast. The route took the group from Gata de Gorgos, through Pedregeur, Alclali, Jalon and down to Calpe for a cuppa by the sea – where a crowd quickly gathered to take photographs of the bikes and the boys and girls in red. It was then on to Moraira via the coast road and to Javea for another spot of refreshment. The Free Spirits mounted up again and rode up to Benitachell and the Restaurante La Cumbre for a Christmas Party – and celebrating the group’s first successful year. However, before the fun started, there was the small matter of presenting a pair of cheques to help two local children’s charities – Make A Smile and the Preventorio de Gandia. The cash was raised through sales of the Free Spirits 2017 Charity Biker Babe Calendar – all 600 copies sold for a total of 6,040€ and the money was shared equally between both good causes. Lucy Grande, of Make A Smile, said the money would help youngsters cared for in EMAUS homes over Christmas, while Silvia Barnish, said the Preventorio’s money would fill up the gas tank to heat the home this winter and make good a damp upper story of the building.

You are prepared for any eventuality, that I know, even if in the worst case scenario you get a hang up. Making peace at Christmas is a global seasonal event, and it is the ultimate spiritual gift to give him the chance to speak to you. If you are rejected then at least you can say that you tried. If he thinks he has, “won” then this is a reflection of his stubbornness and may be the real reason for his deluded behaviour and your disconnection! Good luck!

Mac Pro protection

HI AUNTY: I recently bought a Mac Pro Book having always used PC’s before. People tell me you don’t need virus protection but I would feel easier with some sort of protection, especially for malware. My Gmail address was recently hacked and although it looks like one of the distribution/advertising types of hacking, it made me uncomfortable. I’ve changed all the necessary passwords and it does not seem to have done anything to my system. Can you recommend free virus and malware protection that would work well with MAC or even one I would need to pay for? Many thanks and hope you can help. Val Aunty says: Yes, supposedly Macs are less prone to hacking and viruses, with most viruses being written for Windows. Apple has installed OS X anti-malware now in 10.6.8 and above OS X operating system versions; there is no need to install anti-virus software. Third party anti-virus tends to cause issues when Apple issues OS X updates, so it’s not advised to install them. Email addresses can be hacked many ways, even by simply guessing passwords (or by checking Facebook profiles for pets’ names which are common passwords!) which antivirus and antimalware cannot prevent.

Slow internet speed on laptop HELLO AUNTY: Since acquiring my new laptop with Windows 8, I have noticed that my internet speed is very low. The speed test indicates that my broadband speed is about 8 Mbps but when I try to go to a website it takes longer than my previous laptop with Vista. I have no other computer to test it. Have you heard anything about Windows 8 and its effect on internet speed? Saeed. Aunty says: I personally have found no issues with Internet speeds on Windows 8. But like you, during research on this I have noticed some people have had issues. If you are using Internet Explorer, have you tried using other internet browsers like Chrome, or Firefox?

WINNING WAYS continued for La Vila’s unbeaten side on Sunday as they travelled to Valencia and handed out a 0-40 roasting to Tecnidex. The match was switched from Saturday for the television cameras – although Mediterraneo TV decided to film elsewhere – but the league leaders still handed out a drubbing to the home team. Outplaying Tecnidex in all aspects of the game, this virtuoso performance saw La Vila still top of their league with a healthy lead. In their previous match Tecnidex had beaten Les Abeilles currently third in the league; which highlights the strength and value of this performance. The win leaves La Vila 9 points clear of the second placed St. Cugat, having scored 54 out of a possible 55 points. With three tries and two conversions in the first half the score was 0-19, and it was more of the same in the second. Three more tries all converted by the educated boot of Matas Jara finished

Let it snow MODERN TECHNOLOGY lent a festive air to the fourth annual Teulada Moraira Lions Club carol singing on Saturday evening. The snow machine went into operation to add a Christmas card type backdrop to ‘Carols at the Beach’. And hundreds of people enjoyed traditional carols and the sound of the Salvation Army Band visiting from Madrid. As usual Lions members collected donations and a stall did a roaring trade selling mince pies, shortbread and gingerbread men and warming mulled wine, all helping raise funds for the club.

Come on back George … all is forgiven Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou (aka George Michael) from East Finchley, London turned 53 in June, but, after a spectacular career that began in 1983 with album ´Fantastic´ making No1, and four singles from the album making the top 10, he has not performed live since 2014. I´m now taking you back to 2009 as it was around this time George started suffering several setbacks, culminating in him spending time in 2015 at the world’s most expensive rehabilitation centre. 2009 is also the year George split with Texan art dealer, Kenny Goss, and now friends are hoping for a comeback from the pop superstar. I must tell you at this point that the story is in the ´speculative´ area having been denied by Metro.co.uk, the source of the tale. One of the ´friends´ told The Sun “There´ve been some really dark periods for George, especially during the time apart from Kenny … Kenny helped to keep him on the straight and narrow.” Top friends indeed! It’s most probable that his friends, like all us admirers of his extraordinary talent, would love to see him back doing what he was born to do. Get back on the horse George!

DREW BARRYMORE was born into the Barrymore dynasty 41 years ago, and at the age of just 11 months auditioned for a dog food commercial, and interestingly, when she was nipped by her canine co-star, the producers thought she would cry, but she chuckled and was immediately hired for the job. A weight loss story is always welcome as Santa time approaches, so when I saw Drew had recently managed to lose 20 pounds I thought maybe we should take a closer look. She said to Us Weekly “I did it on the filming of Netflix show ´Santa Clarita Diet, ‘and I feel really great, but I added some protein, like fish and chicken since she’s all vegetarian or vegan.” Drew admitted taking on such a restrictive was not easy “I was extremely disciplined, but have to admit that a lot of the time I cried and dreamt about pizza.” Glad it’s not just me then!

WHEN A really ´out there´ story pops up around a film with an imminent release date, it’s generally the promo office doing their stuff. Eddie Redmayne stars as wizard Newt Scamander in J.K. Rowling’s new film “Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them,” a character who has a wand, something Eddie stupidly kept it in a briefcase. Equally stupidly he recently took both items through customs, and speaking in New York he said “we were coming through customs and I suddenly realised that a wand looks like a really sharp, scary object … I tried to explain it saying, ‘Have you seen the … em No?’ Oops! What’s interesting is that ´in real life´ Eddie carries around a briefcase, on which he reflected “now people are going to think, ‘oh you were cast as Newt Scamander who has a case and now you walk around with one!” Isn´t paranoia the stupidest thing?

WHEN HE was 55, the man born Harry Roger Webb was knighted Sir Cliff Richard, and became a genuine national treasure, although he probably already was one. Now in his 76th year Sir Cliff announced a few weeks ago that he intends to go on a ten-date tour next year following the release of his 101st album ´Just…Fabulous Rock ‘n’ Roll.´ He said ”These concerts are like festival shows; open air concerts, we’re doing two venues in Denmark, one in Ireland and nine in Britain ... If they invite me to Glastonbury I would seriously think about doing it, then I’d either plan a tour to start there or end there.” The problem Cliff has is that the Glastonbury dates would clash with his beloved Wimbledon … Who can ever forget that seriously rainy day in 1996 when he sang to all the patient fans on centre court! I wonder if they gave him free strawberries ´n cream!

WE´VE BEEN tracking the follow-up to Trainspotting over this past year and I´m now pleased to tell you that come January 27th ´T2 Trainspotting´ will go on general release … a mere month and a half away. The movie is based on author Irving Welsh´s follow-up book ´Porno´ and speaking to the NME he said “I was nervous about doing the follow up, but once I saw the script, I was confident we were not going to trash the legacy of the first film, but we´re going to build on it, in fact, in some ways, I think it’s a better than the original movie” ... High praise indeed! Welsh went on to say “everybody is 20 years older, and so much more skilled, which was one of the most important things, to see if we were still creating that buzz working together.” Personally I can’t wait!

Shotgun Wedding We married young when I discovered I was pregnant. “Se” “le” “les” At the end of last week’s article I left you with some short phrases which illustrated the use of Direct and Indirect Object pronouns. Yes, I haven’t forgotten, we are still talking about them! Here they are again in case you missed them. Me lo dio - he or she gave it to me; Te lo mandaron - they sent it to you; ¿nos lo dijiste? - Did you tell us (it)? Os la pasé” “I passed it to you. (“it” being something feminine). In each case the word order is in reverse of English – “to me it he gave” etc., which is probably the hardest thing of all about these little beasts. This means that when we are trying to translate one of these phrases back into English, the first thing we should do it look at the verb (in other words go to the end of the phrase) because this will tell you want the subject of the sentence is. The subject of “dio” is likely to be “he” or “she”, the subject of “mandaron” is going to be “they” etc. Then you have to work backwards from there. This tip should help you to decipher otherwise incomprehensible phrases, although it doesn’t really help you to use them yourself – more of that later! Notice that so far I have only used Indirect Object Pronouns which mean “to me, to you, to us”: in other words, first and second persons singular and plural. Now we need to look at

the third person forms: that is, meaning “to him, to her, to it, to them” as well as the formal “to you” when we are addressing “usted”. As we have seen, these are expressed by “le” “les” or “se”. This can all get rather difficult to follow, so I think the best policy is to work with specific examples. First of all, here are two sentences which contain the indirect object pronouns “le” and “les”.

Le dije que no pasaba nada. (“I told him” or “I said to him that it didn’t matter”). ¿Les importa si fumo? (“Do you mind if I smoke?” or “Does it matter to you if I smoke?”) Les here refers to the plural you - “ustedes”. Now, you will see that in these sentences “le” and “les” appear before the verb on their own. That is, they are not combined with any Direct Object Pronoun, as in our first examples. This is because, when “le” and “les” fall in front of a Direct Object Pronoun, they change to “se”. Real examples are called for again. Let’s go back to the ones we already have: To say “he or she gave it to them” we do NOT say “le lo dio” but instead: “se lo dio”. To say “they sent it to him” we do NOT say “le lo mandaron” but instead: “se lo mandaron”

To say “Did you tell her?” we do NOT say ¿le lo dijiste?, but instead “¿se lo dijiste?” To say “I passed it to them” we do not say “les la pasé” but instead “Se la pasé”. Whatever you do, don’t ask why! Also whatever you do, don’t give in to the impression that you will never be able to use any of this. The first step is to understand it, which usually takes a good while, and then the next step (in my opinion) is to learn some really useful examples parrot-fashion and just use them without worrying about the grammar at all. I’ll sort some of those out for you for next week, along with one other important thing that should help and then we’ll move on to pastures new.

However I do pray, I don’t want to miss out on the possibility of the afterlife on a technicality. Problem is when I enter The House of God – I get an attack of the heebie-jeebies – like Damien in the ‘The Omen’ films. Look! I’m not the fruit of Satan’s loins (who’s loins is still a bit of a murky mystery in the Ashley ancestry, but nothing to concern you). The problem only really occurs this time of year in Torrevieja at the nativity layout in the square. Incidentally have they done a bit of PC housekeeping? A few years back there was steaming camel dung in the kitchen (preferable to sprouts?) – scruffy little Arab urchins tormenting the livestock – mother knocking the washing about on the rocks by the river while the old man’s getting tanked up on the local firewater. Now it’s so pristine – like something out of ‘The Waltons.’ “Goodnight Jameel Boy.” The Sainted Mrs Ashley likes to pop into the church there to light a candle for our dearly departed (including cats,dogs,hamsters,goldfis h,et al) although none were good Holy Romans to my knowledge. My steering well clear can be traced back to my schooldays at the Dr. Hannibal Lecter Secondary Modern. We were compelled to attend on Friday a very High Church service with all the paraphernalia including the sharp lingering sweetness of incense wafting around which caused me to go - what my aged hippy readers call – tripping man. Okay I didn’t see semolina pilchards climbing up the Eiffel Tower, no Magical Mystery Tour here squire. However I did up-chuck like Regan in ‘The Exorcist’ - without the rotating head, or coarse comments about my Mother’s behaviour in Hell. There you have it – just a case of the cloying collywobbles & not denial of the Omnipotent One. Back to the Great Beyond, apparently when you die your hair & fingernails continue growing for a short while, however party invitations do tend to rapidly dry up. Sesame noodles with leeks & sprouts This all-in-one vegetarian supper is a combo of wheat and carrot noodles with a gingery mix of nuts and seeds. Easy and filling, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a midweek quick fix Ingredients 2 nests whole wheat noodles (about 100g) 1 tbsp tamari thumb-sized piece ginger, finely grated 3 garlic cloves, finely grated 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar 1 tbsp sesame oil 150g sprouts, sliced 1 leek, cut into 3 down the length, the lengths halved and shredded into long strips 50g cashew nuts (not salted) 2 carrots, shredded into long noodle strips - use a julienne peeler, knife or spiralizer for this 2 tbsp four-seed mix (sesame, sunflower, golden linseed and pumpkin) or just sesame seeds Method Pour boiling water over the noodles and set aside to soak. Mix the tamari, ginger, garlic and vinegar with 4 tbsp water in a small bowl.

Heat the oil in a large wok and stir-fry the sprouts, leek and cashews together until softened and turning golden in places. Drain the noodles, add to the pan and carry on cooking and

tossing until well mixed. Pour in the ginger mixture toss to coat everything then add the carrots and cook until the carrots soften but still retain a bit of bite adding a dash more water if necessary to loosen up the texture. Top with seeds and serve.

Alfaz Fantasy Football League Once again there were goals galore in last weeks Premier League which meant plenty of points for our Alfaz Fantasy Football League Managers just before Christmas.There was a deluge of goals in the Saturday games to go with the rain which made conditions a bit dodgy for defenders.

Overall the Premier League contributed to the Fantasy 37 goals(over 30 for the 3rd week running),5 clean sheets,43 yellow cards and once again no red ones for the 5th time this Season.The Referees continue to have plenty of Christmas spirit by giving out 43 cards and awarding 4 penalties which were all converted, taking this Season’s total to 55 which is 22 more than at this stage last Season. Peugeot 5008 MPV

TRANSPORTING SEVEN people in comfort can present a problem, unless of course you don’t mind Transit vans. Peugeot has a solution though in its 5008 MPV (multi-purpose vehicle). Unlike the earlier Peugeot 807 people carrier the 5008 is more compact, making it more enjoyable to drive but this does mean that if there are seven passengers there’s not a huge amount of room for luggage. Importantly for the driver it’s not too difficult to reverse or manoeuvre. This style of vehicle is quite van-like in terms of appearance but it is very much like a car to drive and driver appeal is one of the advantages of the Peugeot. The test model, a two-litre diesel Allure – top-of-the-range - is equipped with a six-speed automatic gearbox but it can also be driven like a manual. At low speeds, typically up hill, this gearbox is a little indecisive, not sure whether to go for third gear or second, which does make for the occasional uncomfortable jolt. It is quite frugal for a vehicle of its size, returning over 40mpg on average. I put it through its paces over a long weekend to Pembrokeshire where we experienced a variety of roads. On the motorway (the M4, over the Severn Bridge) it was very capable, happily cruising at 70mph, even though it was heavily laden with five passengers and luggage. Cruise control makes

life so much easier on such travels and the electric child lock engaged by the click of a switch on the driver’s door is easy to operate. The one-way streets, invariably up sharp inclines in this part of the world, certainly cause the tired motorist some confusion but thank goodness I’m driving the 5008 because the auto box makes light work of the hills. I’m not usually a fan of electronic handbrakes but the one fitted to this vehicle is quick and simple to engage and disengage. Inside, the Allure benefits from an enormous panoramic glass roof (with electric sliding cover), which makes the vehicle really light and airy as you can see in the video at testdrives.biz. The front passengers get captain style seats with pull down armrests that can be adjusted to the desired height. The driver’s seat is certainly comfortable, hardwearing and supportive although I do find that when my daughter’s baby seat is in place behind I cannot push my seat back quite as far as I might desire. There are all the gadgets the modern day motorist could dream of including sat nav, a useful head-up display showing the speed and ensuring the driver doesn’t take their eyes off the road. Air conditioning and a good quality sound system are all part of the package.

Alcohol and Drugs Checks This Week ALL OF this week, and through the weekend, the Guardia Civil traffi c department, supported by colleagues from the national, regional and local police, have been conducting intensifi ed checks for alcohol and drug use before driving. THE CAMPAIGN runs right through the day, around the clock, on account of the increase in the number of alcohol and drug related incidents at this time of year, including during the day, as many workers celebrate the festive season with office parties and work-based events. Gregorio Serrano, the Directorate General of Traffic, explained that “the aim of the campaign is to raise public awareness not only that alcohol and driving is a dangerous duo, but also using drugs and driving, and so the preventative controls will not only serve to enforce the law, but also advise of the dangers posed by these deadly combinations. Every day during the campaign, the officers are conducting 25,000 tests on motorists, checking for alcohol and drug use. In 2015, 1.4% of those drivers tested at controls were found to be positive for alcohol, 0.8% of the tests were as a result of an infringement, whereas 4.5% of the positive tests after being involved in an incident. In the case of drugs, in 2015 the number of positive tests increased by 150% over the previous year, going from 29,643 in 2014 to 76,040 in 2015. Although those figures might seem to be low at first glance, when we consider the number of vehicles on the roads and the subsequent consequences, the figures paint a more sinister picture. According to the National Institute of Toxicology and Forensic Science, of all of those drivers killed in 2015, over 43% tested positive for alcohol or drugs. The fines are severe for those testing positive, and even more so for those who are found to be repeat offenders. Spain has a lower maximum alcohol limit than the UK, but the general advice is even simpler, if you are going to drive, don´t drink or use drugs, as the only safe level is zero.
