Bank victims celebrate victories by Jack Troughton
Father Steve and new friends
In the name of Saint Anthony
By Jack Troughton FATHER STEVE Foster and his wife Ruth enjoyed a grand day out at animal charity APASA last Saturday as they blessed rescued dogs. Across Spain working animals and pets were taking part in 17th January celebrations to honour the patron saint of animals. For the full story turn to page 20.
COURTROOM VICTORIES for victims of a fraudulent equity release scheme sold by a bankrupt Icelandic bank have boosted morale in a campaign for justice. Around 600 pensioners across Spain, France and Germany are known to have taken up the heavily marketed and supposedly ‘no risk’ financial package operated by Landsbanki Luxembourg between 2006 and 2008. And when the bank and its parent company in Iceland collapsed in the autumn of 2008, they were horrified to be treated as debtors to the bank rather than victims of a scam – and were shocked to find their homes were targeted for repossession by the Luxembourg bank’s administrator Yvette Hamilius. However, members of the Landsbanki Victims Action Group on the Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol have something to celebrate six years later as the New Year has brought good news. Firstly, last week one member’s civil case in Marbella has seen a judge declare the equity release contract “null and void” and the mortgage agreement scrapped. And in Paris a criminal case involving charges of fraud and money laundering has been accepted against the son of former
Landsbanki President Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson – once chairman and owner of West Ham Football Club – seven officers of the Luxembourg subsidiary, and two French notaries. A trial date has to be fixed for what will be a high profile financial case, and the administrator Ms Hamilius will be summoned by the authorities as a ‘hostile witness’. POSITIVE
Action group spokesman Mike McInnes said only one member took the civil route, all others were involved in a group criminal case in Spain but added: “The court’s decision in Marbella is the most positive news we have had, full stop. Whatever way we have gone, this is a step in the right direction. “The court decided the product was mis-sold and misrepresented in Spain and therefore the contract should be declared null and void and the mortgage cancelled. It means the clock should be wound back and the status quo restored – the bank must give back what it held and the client pays the bank back the 25% advance.” And he said the French prosecution was also a boost. “There is no immediate impact on Spain but it is unlikely the Spanish judiciary will ignore it.” Continued on page 3

Continued from front page The action group is currently obtaining the 50 page report of the French investigation and will translate it to present the document in support of the group’s criminal cases in Spain. Mike said the group had also obtained enough signatures from MEPs in Brussels to trigger a European Commission investigation into the treatment of the victims by officers of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. He is about to travel to Belgium to discuss strategy against Landsbanki – including a possible appeal to the Luxembourg supreme Court – after the courts in the Grand Duchy again refused to acknowledge there was any sign of fraud, money laundering and share price manipulation on the files of the bank. Mike said it had been “tricky” trying to deal with either the administration of Luxembourg or the Landsbanki administrator. He added: “We are more than happy to negotiate a settlement and get the matter resolved. All we have after six
Mike and Julie McInnes
years is total resistance to negotiations in any form. “And that is despite all the evidence of false accounting, fraud and money laundering. They continue to say there is nothing wrong in the files.” The action group remains convinced there are other victims who have not come forward and have no idea there is support available. “I had a telephone call last week from a man in a hell of a state. His wife had
left him, his children returned to the UK, and he was absolutely beside himself,” said Mike. “He had not approached anyone about the situation over Landsbanki, he didn’t know there was an action group, and he was living in fear of the bailiffs knocking at the door – how many are out there in a similar position?” The action group can be contacted by calling Mike on 627 919 000 or by email to mike.mcinnes47@gmail.com
Street parking chaos
Calpe’s busy Avenida Gabriel Miro
PARKING CHAOS has hit Calpe after the company running its busy ‘blue zone’ pay and display bays finished its contract with the town hall. The agreement with Pavasal, a national operator, ended on 31st January and the town centre street parking is currently free and vehicles are being left for hours. But the council has also been hit with complaints from people unable to park and is to consult local businesses regarding the future. RTN was told the Pavasal contract had already been extended for six months and the agreement could not be lengthened any further. The town hall must now put the concession out to tender and is drawing up a new contract. This will earn the local authority 80,000€ a year – double the income from the previous operator. Councillor Carole Saunders said it was planned to extend blue zone area for the busy summer season and also introduced paid parking in some streets for mornings only. The government coalition had invited any other projects from opposition parties but none had been forthcoming. “One councillor boasted he was ‘proud’ to have helped get rid of blue zones but people are not happy because they cannot park.” She added: “It was decided to make 100% certain businesses did want the return of blue zones and we are asking their opinions – at the moment they say people are going out of town because they cannot park. “People have talked about the council running the blue zone parking but under the Plan Ajuste, the town hall is not allowed to employ anymore people. “And so the contract has to go out to tender and we hope to have a new company in place as soon as possible.”

Woman killed in villa
The couple’s Orba home

free punc ture repairs until the end of january, bring this advert!
POLICE FOUND the body of a 70-year-old woman in her Orba villa early on Monday morning, a day after her partner gave himself up to the authorities in Germany and allegedly confessed to her murder. It is believed she had been strangled three days earlier when her husband, 54, handed himself into German police on Sunday – who notified the Guardia Civil.
And it was reported the body was discovered in a small storage room in the home, while the couple’s car was later recovered at Alicante’s El Altet Airport. The authorities are treating the killing as another case of “gender violence” – the second in Alicante in 2015. However, investigators say there was no previous complaint of domestic violence made against the suspect but noted this was a common occurrence in a “high percentage” of such tragedies.

OPERATION ASPHALT is scheduled to resume in Calpe’s outlying urbanisations in the coming weeks. Local residents have waited patiently for phase 2 and phase 3 of the scheme to resurface roads.
New look centre opens THE POPULAR ‘pensionistas’ centre in Teulada was reopened on Saturday after a 90,000€ investment by the town hall. More than 100 people watched Mayor Antoni Joan Bertomeu cut a ribbon with Joseph Oller, President of the Association of Jubilados y Pensionistas de Sant Vicent Ferrer. Works at the Social Centre of the Third Age included sound proofing and decorating, as well as the purchase of new tables and chairs, curtains, lights, a projector, screen, and a television. Mr Oller thanked the mayor and council for the investment which he said had made the centre the best in the region. He said the soundproofing was necessary to avoid disturbing neighbours at the weekends when dance and music events were staged at the centre.

Population falls OFFICIAL FIGURES reveal the population of Benitachell fell by 1,061 people last year ending years of growth in the municipality. by Jack Troughton The National Institute of Statistics has released the official figures for 2014 showing there are 4,659 people on the municipal register, the ‘Padron’, down from 5,720 people in 2013 and lower than the 4,773 inhabitants listed in 2007. It is thought the decrease in the population of Benitachell is because of a failure of foreign residents to register at the town hall and despite a publicity campaign urging people to join the Padron. And the decrease will affect the town hall budget. The local authority receives income from central government based on the official head count
– while the official population figures also govern the level of services and subsidies provided to Benitachell. The number of elected councillors at the heart of the local authority will El Poble also fall from the current 13 to 11 as the Nou de population has dipped under 5,000. Benitachell
Bridge load tests
By Irena Bodnarec LOAD TESTS are to be carried out on the iron bridges along the number 9 railway line between Benidorm and Denia by FGV – Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat Valenciana. The company has allocated 200,000 euros for testing the ancient bridges – some of which are nearing 100 years. The modernization plan, which has an allocated budget of 50 million euros should be complete by 2020, with diesel trains being replaced along the entire route. ATM gangster with links to Spain TWO FUGITIVES believed to be part of a gang raiding cash point machines across the North West and Central England are being hunted by police in an ongoing investigation.
Andrew White (left) and Adam Murphy (right)
by Jack Troughton MERSEYSIDE’S ANDREW White – who has links to Spain – and Adam Murphy are wanted for conspiracy to cause explosions and burglary of bank and shop premises between January and December 2013. White, aged 25, from Huyton, and Murphy, 29, from Liverpool and who may have fled to Scotland, are described as “two of Merseyside’s most wanted criminals”. Detectives allege they are part of a gang responsible for ATM attacks at 28 premises – banks supermarkets and post offices – in Wirral, Lancashire, Cheshire, Southport, Liverpool, Prescot, Loughborough, Gloucester, Birmingham, Nottingham and Derby. The raids resulted in losses to the businesses targeted of around £800,000 and damage to property caused by the explosions in excess of £480,000. JAIL And the investigation into the campaign of crime at ‘hole in the wall’ machines has already netted seven other men. They were jailed for a total of more than 114 years at Liverpool Crown Court in two separate hearings last year. Detective Chief Inspector Gayle Rooney, of the Matrix Serious Organised Crime Team, said the Merseyside Police was “once again” asking for the public’s help in efforts to trace white and Murphy. “They are wanted by the force in connection with an on-going investigation into theft from cash point machines,” she said. “The techniques used in these thefts were extremely dangerous and we are fortunate that no one was hurt. “I have no doubt that the community will embrace this opportunity to assist the police in bringing these people to justice and I would urge anyone with information to get in touch.” People can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

DNA tests on alleged children of ex-King show a sibling match INGRID SARTIAU, a Belgian woman who is alleging that King Juan Carlos is her father, says that she has met with 58-year-old Albert Sola, another person who claims to be an illegitimate child of the former monarch. by Jan Gamm Furthermore, DNA tests carried out in 2012 by Belgian researcher Jean-Jacques Cassiman show a 91 per cent sibling match between 48year-old Sartiau and Sola. Sola’s claim has so far been rejected by the Spanish courts as it did not meet ‘legal requirements’. Cassiman said: “The probability that they share the same parent is very high although of course the results do not show who the father is.” Sartiau, a divorced mother of two, says she is “anxious to meet with Don Juan Carlos” and upholds that the relationship between the King and her mother, who never married, was a romantic one and not just a sexual arrangement. King Juan Carlos married Queen Sofia in May 1962: Ingrid Sartiau was born in 1966.

Lighthouse protest widens LOCAL OPPOSITION to a plan to convert the lighthouse at Cap de Sant Antoni in Javea into a boutique hotel and restaurant was made clear to the President of the Ports of Spain last week. by Jack Troughton JAVEA MAYOR Jose Chulvi met with Jose Llorca in Madrid to outline the local authority’s position on the proposed privatisation – and was assured local feelings were “relevant” to any final decision. The town hall and a number of other bodies are unanimous in their opposition to the plan which clashes with current
planning legislation and environmental and safety regulations. The town hall is lobbying in favour of the lighthouse being converted into an information centre for the Marine Reserve of Cap Sant Antoni and the Montgo Natural Park. Mr Chulvi said it was “important” the head of the ports authority knew “first hand” local Opposition feeling about the hotel plan and the viable was made clear alternative use as a visitors’ centre.
Addition to the Poniente wave By Irena Bodnarec THE COUNCIL has announced that the architect Carlos Ferrater, who designed the award winning multi coloured wavy Poniente promenade has been consulted on a renovation project. The wooden walkway, which runs parallel with the promenade has deteriorated, with many broken and damaged slats, putting holidaymakers safety in danger. Over the Summer period there are numerous reports of injuries sustained due to the poor condition of the platform. A report by the Catalan architect four years ago advised that a tropical wooden should be used which is very durable and weather resistant, but it transpired that pine was used instead – a cheap alternative due to costing. The maintenance department has repaired some sections where the damage is worse, but the entire stretch ideally needs replacing. The Council wants the design to complement the style of the existing wavy promenade saying that it´s a shame to have such a beautiful award winning piece of architecture ruined by a shabby wooden platform below.
Market Wars By Irena Bodnarec THE SAGA continues regarding the new proposed market in Benidorm – behind the nightclubs on the old N332, in the Armanello district. In 2013 the Councilor for Commerce, Conrado Hernandez did sign a document on behalf of the Council – but now the wording in the application is the issue. The Councillor has said that a subsequent application for authorization from the Regional Government was worded differently from the original. Benidorm Council gave the initial green light
for an antique market and not a general rastro of used and new goods – which is what has transpired. Any project over 2,500 sq mt needs additional authorization from the Regional Government in addition to a green light from the Council concerned. Benidorm have now withdrawn its support for the new project after mass opposition from local traders upon discovering that it would be a general market and not a specialized antique market as they were led to believe on the initial application.

Opera house chief arrested
Luis Bárcenas
Barcenas offered bail
FORMER PARTIDO Popular Treasurer Luis Bárcenas has been offered bail of 200,000 euros on the condition that he does not leave the country. by Jan Gamm
In addition he will be required to report to the Court on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Barcenas’ bank accounts and assets have been frozen since
investigations were launched following allegations of fraudulent payments within the PP. Judicial officials accused Barcenas of amassing more than €62 million in a Swiss account from an alleged kickback scheme, leading to Bar-
cenas saying that he had made regular payoffs to PP officials, supported by a handwritten list that included Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy. The prime minister and the rest of the PP have consistently denied the allegations.
HELGA SCHMIDT has been taken into police custody and suspended from her post as general director of the Palau de les Arts in Valencia, amid allegations of ‘financial irregularities’. Former director Ernesto Moreno has also been arrested. Since the year 2000 she has worked full-time at the Palau de les Arts, succeeding in placing the venue amongst the best and most reputable on the international scene. In June 2012, the president of Austria awarded her the Cross of Honour for Science and Art, First Class, the highest award that can be obtained in the Republic of Austria. Helga Schmidt has built her reputation on her talent for hiring expensive performers at cut-price rates. She was due to retire in 2016.

Repsol scraps its Canaries exploration project REPSOL HAS scrapped its controversial oil exploration project off the coast of the Canary Islands as ‘insufficient oil and gas does not merit further exploration’.
Three out of four Canaries residents were opposed to the plan
by Jan Gamm BAD NEWS for Madrid where there were high hopes of decreasing energy dependency and job generation but great news for conservationists and environmentalists who have campaigned tirelessly to end Repsol’s presence in the region. Repsol has carried out a two-month exploration project at a depth of 2km beneath the sea bed in search
of oil and gas, with the result that “…the deposits found have been saturated with water and the hydrocarbons present are in very thin, non-exploitable layers.” The Deputy Head of the Industry Ministry Enrique Hernandez Bento said, “This is bad news for the Canaries and for Spain.” However, a poll in November by the regional government showed three out of four Canaries residents were opposed to the plan.
Spanish town hall websites hacked by ISIS THE SPANISH press has reported that an estimated 70 municipal websites were hacked in the Navarre region on Tuesday night. The websites displayed black IS flags and threats in Arabic instead of their usual informative content. The message began with the slogan ‘I love ISIS’, ending with ‘Je suis Mohammed’ and ‘Je suis ISIS’ and also insults against France and Israel, signed by “hackers Algeria 2015’ and ‘hacked by Team System Dz’. Police do not believe the attack specifically targeted Navarre, pointing out that all the affected websites had one service provider located in France. During last week hackers shut down a further 20,000 websites in France in retaliation of the mass rally that took place in Paris following the Charlie Hebdo massacre.

The legislation was passed by the Magaluf Commission for Tourism. Rowdy and lewd behaviour in the streets of the town has caused considerable concern in recent years. Cost of time in the sun
I HAVE just been to Los Alcarazes and was perturbed to see at least 150 motorhomes, mostly German and Dutch, with a few British, wild camping in areas along the beach. Most of these motorhomes cost in excess of 100K but their owners are in Spain for a free ride. They fill up their water on the beach but what do they do with their waste water and their toilets which need emptying on a regular basis? I’m not only a disgruntled home owner who pays taxes to have a home in Spain, but also I’m a ‘motorhomer’ who would never camp up for weeks on end like this. The local council are missing a money-making scheme here: erect some portable loos, some fresh water supplies and charge the motorhomers 5 euros per night to stay there - it will more than pay the wages of the person responsible for collecting the fee and still cheaper than a campsite but at least they are paying something towards the cost of their time in the sun. Bernie Metcalfe, Pinar de Campoverde
We dont say thank you enough AFTER READING the letters page in this week’s RTN, I felt compelled to write to you for the first time ever. After an emergency admission to Denia Hospital and a 23-day stay, I feel I am well qualified to comment on your regular contributor Dick Handscombe and his pre- Christmas stay in hospital. I was amazed that he made no comment or thanks on the marvellous Medical and nursing care that he would have received. And no comment or thanks for the in-hospital services that the HELP volunteers provide. No thanks to the HELP hospital visitors who came to see us twice
a week to ensure we were not alone or distressed, also making patients aware of the HELP available whilst in hospital and after discharge. He could only whinge about the sun in his eyes and the visitors knowing him as the celebrity gardener, and maybe not asking for his autograph. We do not say thank you often enough and we are all too quick to complain. I for one was pleased to have had the opportunity to say thank you to Denia Hospital and thank you to HELP volunteers, when I was so nearly not able to. Stuart Nelson.
Well done HELP volunteers
I WAS appalled to read Mr Handscombe’s shameful complaint about two HELP Volunteers who were kind enough to visit him in hospital. He admits he was ‘not quite with it’ after coming round from surgery, yet he was sufficiently compos mentis (or should we say in his case compost mentis) to note one of the volunteer’s omission to mention his books and RTN column when introducing him to the other visitor. What a pompous attitude. The man should be grateful to receive their well-meaning visit at all rather than take offence at their failure to acknowledge his supposed celebrity status. I myself was delighted to have a visit from two lovely ladies who cheered me up considerably after an operation in Denia Hospital. Well done HELP volunteers for all you do for the community – and without any of the remuneration that Mr Handscombe enjoys from his publications. Keep up the good work. Name and address supplied

Audit Office strengthens control over most populated municipalities THE SPENDING habits of some of Valencia’s largest cities are to be looked at more closely by Valencia. by Keith Nicol The Audit Office completed this year’s audit of municipalities, with more than 50,000 inhabitants, and has begun reviewing their findings. According to a statement from the Trustee, this programme sets down the lines of action of the Audit Office and the organizations under its control. The goal is to allow programme execution “formed enough judgment on the quality and regularity of the economic and financial management of the Valencian public sector”. By areas of action, within the autonomous public sector, 98.8% of the budget (set at 18,113.20 million in 2014) will be prioritised and they will oversee the areas of grants and procurement. These revisions, plus their administration, including public corporations and foundations, will undergo a formal control of the remaining 1.2%. Purchasing management of the Department of Health will be evaluated and monitored, such as the invoice register of the Generalitat, the MRIs and haemodialysis.
Torrevieja’s yet to be opened Sport Pavillion
Locally, the audit is for municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants and the three provincial councils. There will be reports on the municipalities of Castellón, Elda, San Vicente del Raspeig, Torrevieja and Valencia as well as the Provincial de Castellón and subsidies area of the City of Valencia is also to be overseen. An audit of municipalities with between between 30,000 and 50,000 inhabitants will also be analyzing the internal control of Alzira, Dénia, Mislata, Burjassot, Ontinyent, Burriana, Villena, Petrer, Santa Pola, Villajoyosa, Jávea, La Vall d’Uixó , Manises, and Alaquàs Aldaia. Murder suspect jailed THE MAN wanted for questioning over a gangland killing on the Costa Blanca was jailed for 14 years on Wednesday for his part in a huge drug trafficking plot. Paul Scott – who had been on the run for four years – was arrested in December as he attempted to sneak back into the UK last month – landing at a remote Norfolk airfield in a light aircraft. The 32-year-old from Liverpool is wanted by Spanish police for the murder of Francis Brennan – whose tortured body was washed up on a La Zenia beach in April inside an industrial-sized bin bag. Brennan, also from Merseyside had been kidnapped in Javea last January by bogus police officers. The 25-year-old’s hands were bound together; he had suffered a severe head wound. After the hearing at Liverpool Crown Court, Scott was arrested by Merseyside Police on a European Arrest Warrant issued by Spain. He admitted his role in the conspiracy to import cocaine and was the 26th and final member of a gang plotting to smuggle up to 40 tonnes of cocaine into Britain by sea from South America hidden inside tins of fish. The illicit operation – valued at £4 billion - was masterminded by a Turkish kingpin in London and a Liverpool drugs baron – Scott’s role was to arrange transport for cocaine being sourced by the gang and use transport carrying legitimate loads to smuggle drugs. is that the local sector is also evaluated on the effectiveness of management. These reports are put together every year, such as the General Account of Local Authorities, which collects economic and financial information of all local entities that have submitted their accounts to the Trustee within the prescribed period, those of 5 universities, chambers of commerce and territorial Compensation Fund. In addition to the audit report, the Trustee has in recent years expanded its activities in the light of developments in the public sector and the impact it has on the economy. Thus, municipalities must submit information on their contractual activity on outstanding obligations to the private3 sector.

Death of a legend
Chinese billionaire buys into Atletico Madrid THE CHINESE business tycoon Wang Jialin, whose estimated wealth stands at around US$13.2 Billion, has purchased a 20% share of Atletico Madrid. The 60-year-old billionaire has also undertaken an investment of at least €3,000 million in a venture dubbed ‘Chinese Eurovegas’, which will involve the development of a series of shopping malls, hotels and residences in the capital. Wang topped Forbes’ ‘Rich List’ for China last year, having amassed a fortune in real estate through his Wanda group of companies. Gil Marín will maintain control of Atletico Madrid, with a 52% stake.
CORONATION STREET star Anne Kirkbride has died of cancer aged 60 in a Manchester hospital. by Jan Gamm The actress played the role of Deirdre Barlow in the soap favourite for 42 years. Her husband David Beckett and the cast of Coronation Street are said to be ‘heartbroken and deeply saddened’. Co-star William Roache, who played her husband Ken Barlow, said she would be “greatly missed.” He added, “She was an impeccable performer with superb comedy timing and an immense gift for heightened drama. We had some rows over the years as Ken and Deirdre and it was wonderful to play those scenes opposite her. Coronation Street has lost one of its iconic characters and Anne will be greatly missed.” The day after Anne Kirkbride’s death, filming was suspended on set as the cast and crew were too sad to continue.
Elderly weddings on the rise
15
MARRIAGES BETWEEN people under 30 have taken a nose dive in recent years. However, the number of weddings between couples who are over 60 has doubled in the last decade – and tripled since 2003! In 2003, 444 weddings were officiated for couples over 60 – in 2013 861 couples packed up their pacemakers and headed off to their honeymoon after tying the knot! The reasons behind this recent passion for elderly nuptials are not only the practical attraction of a widow’s pension: living expenses may be shared as well as the social benefits of being part of a couple. Whatever the reasons, mature weddings are now quite the fashion in modern Spain. Wang Jialin

MOBILE PHONES are the subject of more conflicts within Spanish families than any other according to a recent study carried out by the Mediation Service Union of Family Associations. Over recent years children and especially teenagers have become increasingly dependent on their phones for communication, entertainment and social networking, spending hours each day in their own little techno-world, neglecting their chores and their
studies in pursuit of techno games and online relationships. As parents try to lessen their children’s dependence on technology in an effort to increase their interpersonal relationships, serious conflict results in some families having to seek professional mediation to restore the peace. Wonderful Wonderland by Jack Troughton VISUALLY STUNNING with creative sets and colourful costumes, Careline Theatre’s panto Alice in Wonderland proved a huge hit with those who count – the kids out front. Not the young at heart you understand – they are always up for this annual seasonal treat - but real youngsters like the two brothers sat in the row in front of me on opening night. Armed with lashings of pop, crisps and sweets, with mum and dad, nanna and granddad (I presume) to answer any complicated matters arising from the plot, they were simply having the best fun. Dennis Arthurs played the panto dame ‘The Duchess’ and was the bad guy suffering the traditional boos and hisses of outrageous fortune, but was really getting some serious stick from ‘The Bros’. They were on their feet, yelling at the top of their voices and handing out the sort of advice it would be dangerous to ignore – and touchingly, it was still very polite! Talented newcomer Georgia Phillips made an exceptionally good Alice, able to act, sing and dance as she tried to keep up with new chum The White Rabbit (Alex McEnery). And stealing the show as a new double act were Scott Hamer and Luke Marriott as Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum respectively. They

YACHTSMEN SAILED over the start line in the 14th annual 300 Miles A3 Moraira race on Wednesday at noon. Organised by Club Nautico de Moraira the 300 nautical mile race takes the yachts down the coast to Murcia and across to Ibiza. And it is a tough challenge for the three men crews because the winds can be so variable – gusting to 35 knots or leaving the boats becalmed. However, the race is a benchmark on the sailing calendar and the winner will lift a trophy and collect 3,000€, second home receives 2,000€, and third place 1,000€.
gave a really polished performance as the oversized clowns and lit up the stage. Two other performances winning a special mention were Elysha Fish as the March Hare and Connie Levey as The Dormouse; from the Mad Hatter’s tea party to the final curtain they made a superb pair of troupers. Suzanna Mace’s excellent choreography made the dance routines a delight and director Candy Wright excelled in squeezing out some sort of sense from Lewis Carroll’s wonderful nonsense. However, it was the young ones that really made this a Careline success – and bodes well for the future of the theatre group. The Junior Chorus certainly enjoyed a good night at the office as the woodland creatures and the pack of cards. This was perhaps best summed up by ‘Two of Hearts’, young Diana Vladu, who, as the smallest actor on stage, simply threw herself into the show.

Such events are difficult subjects for schools to cover, but Head of Secondary Fiona Phillips believes they must be addressed. “It is vitally important that we make students aware of these type of issues, and give them an understanding, however difficult the topic, of what is going on in the world around them. “XIC will continue in the future to make students aware of issues they will face after leaving school, as we all believe here that it is a fundamental part of the education process.”

Update on Benidorm’s Shopping Mall By Irena Bodnarec IN AN attempt to unlock the deadlock and get things moving, Benidorm council have offered to pay part of the cost of constructing a roundabout on one of the biggest building projects in the area. The French multinational company Unibail-Rodamco have proposed to build a brand new shopping mall on the industrial zone – located beside the AP7 and N332 in Benidorm – but access from the Levante area has ground works to a halt. The development is a joint venture with construction firms Enrique Ortiz and Enrique Ballester, with Ballester already offering to pay 3 of the 4.8 million euros needed over a year ago. Now to endevour to get things back on track the Council have offered to contribute the balance of 1.8 million to complete the project on the understanding that the developer submits the license applications for the shopping mall within the next three months. The 1.8 million will actually be reduced by 400,000 euros to 1.4 million as that would have been the Councils cost to pay for infrastructure regardless and will come out of the 2015 budget. The French company is investing 50 million euros in the project, which would create 1,600 jobs during the construction period and in the region of 2,500 once the commercial area becomes operational – great news for the region. Negotiations will continue next week but for once, Councillors of all political parties are united in agreement that the project is important and should go ahead.
By Irena Bodnarec LA CALA beach front in Benidorm has benefitted from a 250,000€ investment to its promenade. On Wednesday, the Mayor Agustin Navarro and Deputy Gema Amor officially inaugurated the new wider pavement along the Avd Vicente Llorca Alós - running alongside the promenade in front of the Gran Hotel Delfin and the Avd de Mont Benidorm. 3,400 sq mt of walkway along the front has been concrete stamped at a cost of 180,000 euros. The Mayor defended the decision using this process saying it was cheaper, cleaner, easier to maintain and there is always a guarantee to match the exact colour unlike tiled paving stones. A further budget of 16,000 euros has been allocated to landscape the area and replace road and information signage. In his speech the Mayor said that the city is aging and there are many things that need renewing - the image of the resort is important and La Cala must not be forgotten. The Council takes pride in the fact that it consults the residents and listens to their suggestions on improvements, one of which was to reduce the speed limit on the main road to increase road safety of those crossing over to get the beach.

Adopt rather than buy By Irena Bodnarec THE WOODBRIDGE Oval in Albir was heaving last Sunday – but not with the expected golfers or cricketers. The ground was transformed into a pooch haven by local dog associations and voluntary groups – with the message of ´Adopt a dog rather than buy´. There were numerous stands with information on adoption and voluntary rescue groups selling items to raise funds for their causes. Many people bought their own four legged friends and there was a ´Crufts style´ competition running throughout the day. One Association – Asoka, which came from Alicante bought with them several dogs that were looking for new forever homes. Dedicated volunteers walked around with the very well behaved canines throughout the day – with each one wearing a reflective jacket with the words ´Adopt Me´ printed on it. Asoka took in many of the dogs from the recently closed down rescue centre in Alfaz del Pi that couldn´t be taken by neighbouring centres in La Nucia and Benidorm. The message to anyone looking to get a dog or in fact any animal – please adopt one of the thousands that have been abandoned rather than buy.

African adventures ADVENTURESS AND writer Lucinda E Clarke takes readers out into the wild side of life in South Africa in her book ‘Truth, Lies and Propaganda’ – with a second volume out at Easter. by Jack Troughton Now retired and living in Moraira, she struggled to earn a living as a writer after losing her job as a teacher but went on to enjoy an award-winning career in radio, television and for her own video production company. And Lucinda – it is a pen name – told RTN the book was a behind the scenes look at the media and how it worked. “I thought I was starting to forget some of the things that I experienced, some funny and some sad so Truth, Lies and Propaganda was born. I feel very attached to South Africa and very privileged to have lived and worked there.” Lucinda said she left behind the cities and townships and
headed into the deep rural areas of the vast country – and while she did once interview Nelson Mandela, she met people in their own homes and tribal chiefs. “I was incredibly lucky and got to see what many people cannot see, thus Truth, Lies and Propaganda. If you read this book you will never believe anything you see on television again,” she said. SPACE “And I miss South Africa very much, all the wide open spaces and how you feel so alive when you are there. Sometimes you can feel the drum beats under the souls of your feet.” Lucinda’s first self-published book was an autobiography ‘Walking over Eggshells’ which explored
her relationship with her mother and details her own travels. And her second book is a novel ‘Amie – an African Adventure’ which tells of a woman taken from the comforts of her life in England to an African country. She said her passion for writing continued. “I am a writer and I have not done anything but write.” Lucinda said she now self-published the three books by choice. “I used to be published by Macmillan and they made all the money – money doesn’t mean much to me. It’s very nice to have it but I am still me and I now value what is in life.” All three books are available through Amazon and Lucinda writes a blog at lucindaeclarke. wordpress.com and has a Facebook page as Lucinda E Clarke.

Singing Vicar at APASA by Jack Troughton FATHER STEVE Foster reported for duty in Javea last Saturday to perform the traditional blessing of Saint Anthony, patron saint of animals. Armed with a sprig of rosemary, a banjo, and his wife Ruth carrying the holy water, Father Steve saw every dog in the shelter and said he was impressed with how happy the canines were. He blessed every APASA dog and pets brought along by charity supporters – many of them rescue dogs – during the celebration, once again a party enjoyed by everyone. And Father Steve also joined in the entertainment with his banjo; singing ‘How Much is that Doggy in the Window?’ and ‘A Place in the Choir’ – and its appropriate line: “All God’s creatures get a place in the choir.” Father Steve and Ruth have been in Spain for 14 months as part of the Costa Blanca Anglican Chaplaincy and said they were really pleased at being asked to carry out the blessing.
“I think this is a fabulous place and APASA is doing a brilliant job,” he told RTN. “At least 99% of the dogs are really happy, and the ones who are not I think are still acclimatising and they will settle down, they are the newest arrivals.” He has carried out an animal blessing back in the UK. “I think there was a gerbil in a cage and a couple of dogs – one was ours. Colleagues have also done it; one had a horse which left a little offering in church.” And Father Steve said he thought the concept of the blessing was “lovely” but added: “It is a shame the Spanish put so much effort into celebrating Sant Antoni and they do not put as much into looking after the animals in the first place. “All too often people get a dog and it is just a passing interest and the next thing it has to be looked after.” Last weekend APASA took in five dogs, a A dog’s eye sheep, and a seagull. It currently has a populaview of tion of 280 dogs and 450 canines arrived and left Father over 2014. Steve
Benidorm enters the 21st Century IT IS only a matter of weeks before the first phase of fibre optic goes live in Benidorm. Starting in February fibre will be available to 35,000 properties within the Rincon de Loix, parts of the Old Town and Centro areas of the town. On Tuesday José Manuel del Arco, Accounts Director of Telefonica together with the Mayor Agustin Navarro, Deputy Gema Amor and Councilor for Technology Ruben Martinez went to inspect progress in the Rincon. This new technology will allow internet speeds ten times faster than the current ADSL as was explained by the
Telefonica Executive. The company have invested 7 million euros in the initial two phases, which will result in almost 40% of homes, shops and businesses in Benidorm to have access to this new high speed technology. The last three areas of the town should go live by the end of the Summer. Del Arco thanked the City Council for its co-operation in granting permission to progress with this project and said that the aim of the company was to ensure that the citizens and businesses in Benidorm all benefit from the new technology available.
Happy and loved DIEGO, ‘THE Podenco of Ondara’, continues to flourish in the care of animal charity SCAN but needs expensive specialist care to recover from “horrendous” injuries. by Jack Troughton The three-year-old dog spent two years living in the campo behind the Portal de la Marina shopping centre in Ondara – being fed by shop staff and members of the public. However, when it was reported Diego had suffered an accident and nothing was being done, the El Vergel-based Society for the Care of Animals in Need stepped in. Because of the injuries to his right foreleg, the dog holds his paw off the ground and needs physiotherapy to correct his stance. Charity President Barry Caulfield told RTN that since being at the shelter Diego had been sterilised, had his teeth cleaned – they had suffered through his poor diet and scavenging – and had essential X-rays done.
“Basically there is nothing that can be done for his leg without sending him to a specialist centre in Spain – if there is one – or to the UK or even the States,” he said. “You can see from the X-rays just how horrendous his fractures were, he must have suffered terribly, and at least now he is being loved. Rehabilitative physio will help but it costs money.” Barry said at SCAN, Diego was well fed, had friends to play with and was loved. “We will need to look after him for quite some time before he can be adopted; he is a great dog and will become a very suitable animal for adoption.” However, he said any donations to help with Diego’s future care would be welcome. The can be made through SCAN’s Paypal link at the charity website www.scancostblanca.com

Developing a great Spanish garden by
Dick Handscombe Holistic gardener and author
THE KEY QUESTIONS How does your garden stack up? Apart from the swimming pool terrace how much use of the garden did you get last summer? Does the garden take maximum advantage of the Mediterranean climate we experience? Is it a garden that is enjoyable to walk around, work in, take siestas, eat out in on most days of the year and at the same time provide some of the family’s fruit and vegetables and perhaps even eggs? If not, a basic framework follows for a garden that matches an outdoor lifestyle with the garden developed to be used as the main room of the property for most months of the year. A BASIC FRAMEWORK The following framework can be used as the base for improving an existing garden or starting from scratch. It matches and enables an outdoor lifestyle for most of the year by providing for summer shade and sheltered winter sun. Only with these can a Spanish garden become the most used room of the property. An attractive and interesting network of terraces and paths. Terraces of different sizes
for different activities such as cooking and entertaining, secluded siestas, sunning after a dip in the pool or a quiet winters read. Pathways that lead one from one attractive part of the garden to another, opening into internal and external vistas en route. Curving rather than straight paths and the use of a variety of surfaces can add to the magic of a new garden even before the first plants are planted. A number of interesting and contrasting mini gardens, patios or corners, the pool area treated as one of several mini gardens rather than the only feature of the garden. If you only use it for five or six months a year why stare at it day in day out throughout the year? A variety of colour schemes in different parts of the garden using plantings with the many hues and textures of green foliage as well as the subtle or blazing colours of the flowers. The handy handbook ‘Your Garden in Spain – Planning planting and maintenance’ includes an important chapter in this respect: Chapter 2.6 ‘Painting with Plants’. With the generally benign
Curved paths and plants make for an interesting garden
climate an amazing range of flowering plants, fruit and vegetables can be grown provided the soil is first improved. But do be creative in how you group the flowering plants and integrate the growing of fruit and vegetables. Use plants with interesting architectural shapes. Carefully sited groups of palm trees, cordylines, cacti and aloes, or green or purple leaved aeoniums can be as effective as a bank of flowering shrubs. Perfume throughout the year - favourites include Jasmines, Roses, Honeysuckles, Galan de
Noche, San Diego, Frangipani, Mock Orange, Citrus Trees, Freesias, Lilies, Passion Flowers, Sweet Peas, Geraniums, and culinary and medicinal herbs. Grow a variety of herbs for cooking and for their aromatherapeutic and medicinal effects. Herbs can be in a designated garden, in a rockery or spread around in mixed beds. The traditional Spanish sound of dripping water from a fountain, the running water of a waterfall into or between ponds or a creative mini water feature… Solar pumps allow features
to be located anywhere in the garden without expensive wiring systems. Grow even just a few seasonal vegetables to eat fresh - grown ecologically. Encourage an interesting range of beneficial wildlife ranging from geckoes on the walls at night that catch flying insects to lizards on rocks - and frogs and dragonflies around the pond. Naturally you won’t achieve such a garden within a year unless very small but do have a clear vision of what you are aiming for before you start.

Spanish Property Court Auction - Legal tips I AM considering buying a property through a public court auction, as I have been informed that few people go to these auctions and you can get a property for almost nothing. Is this correct? How does the system work? SPANISH COURT real estate property auction is regulated by Spanish Civil Proceedings Law, the value or price would depend normally on the different values of: The property valuation for the auction, which is normally fixed by the auction court process, and The amount owed to the creditor. Per the above, we must distinguish between 2 different scenarios: A) If there are offers or bids at the property auction, the court auction will work as follows: A1. If the best bid is 70% of the valuation or more, they will be awarded the property, and with this money, the creditors will be paid. A2. If the best bid is of less than 70% then, there would be different options: A2.1: The claimant ( person who applies for the
execution – auction of the property) can get the property for the equivalent of the 70% of the valuation value. A2.2. Or the claimant could be awarded with the property for the amount due to him/her, if the amount due to him is more than 60% of the valuation and is higher than the rest of the bids at the auction. A2.3: Or if the claimant does not want to be awarded with the property, it could be awarded to the highest bid, if that offer made is over the 50% of the valuation or pays the full debts and costs of the auction / execution process. B) If nobody is interested in buying the property, and there are no bids B1. If the property sold in public auction is not the habitual home of the respondents, the claimant will be able to get it for 50% of the valuation value, or the money owed. B2. If the property is the habitual residency (home) of

the respondents, the claimant will be able to get it for 70% of the valuation, but if the debt is lower than this amount, for the 60% of the valuation. Also, you should know, if the property is awarded, the property will be transferred by the court in the legal, urban, cadastral, etc. situation as it is, meaning that you may find some problems, like: lack of water or electricity contract, lack of occupation license, building problems, the property has been damaged by the previous owners etc. Also, legally, the person awarded with the property will need to pay Property Transfer Tax, for example in the community of Valencia ( Alicante, Valencia and Castellon regions) this is set at 10% of the final acquisition value. Interest rates unlikely to rise until 2016 at the earliest ACCORDING TO top economists interest rates in the UK, Europe and more controversially the US are unlikely to rise until 2016. THE EUROZONE’S woes are likely to be a key drag on the UK economy. The European Central Bank is set to announce on Thursday whether it plans to launch its own version of quantitative easing, amid anxiety about the outcome of next week’s Greek election. The Swiss franc rose sharply against the euro last week after the Swiss National Bank dropped its attempt to limit rises in its currency. Investors have been buying Swiss francs because they fear quantitative easing will devalue the euro, which in likelihood it will. At least this will bring some good news to expats living off a Sterling income, it should mean that the Euro will get even weaker against Sterling and we could even see an exchange rate of 1.40 or even 1.45 in the next month. But back to savers, what you may be asking yourself can you do to make a little extra from your money, well firstly if you are over 65 years old I would recommend you look at investing in the pensioner bonds being offered by the UK government. The
one year bond pays 2.24% after basic rate tax, this is automatically deducted when the interest is paid (2.8 % before) and the 3 year bond pays 3.2 % after tax (4% before). All interest is paid at maturity and the maximum investment is £10,000 per person over 65 years old in each bond. But what if you are under 65 or are over 65 but need more than £20,000 of your money to work for you. Well it’s no good looking to the banks, the launch of high-paying Pensioner Bonds has led to banks cutting more than 100 rates in 21 days, Money Mail can reveal. Big names including Lloyds Bank, Royal Bank of Scotland, Halifax, the Post Office and Skipton Building Society are among those to hack back interest on High Street accounts, cash Isas and even deals for children. In some cases, interest rates have been slashed in half. Susan Hannums, director at the independent website SavingsChampion.co.uk, says: “This is one of the
toughest periods for savers in living memory.” This is where I can help savers, I am here to help you find the right solution to make your money work for YOU, to arrange a free, independent, professional and impartial consultation please contact me by email christina.brady@blacktowerfm.com or call me on 658 892 330.

All about Anna, Cinderella and not too much up top!
THE SUBJECT of today’s main feature is little known actress Anna Kendrick, whom to date has appeared in 26 films, sung in a Broadway musical aged 12, for which she won an award, one of 14 altogether, and plays Cinderella in new 2014 film musical ´Into the Woods.´ She has become infamous for her hilarious Twitter account, but I´ll get to that shortly, as I want to relate to you some of the things she said in an interview she gave to top US magazine Nylon. On the subject of being over confident Anna said: “I think self-doubt is healthy, it pushes you, and humbles you. I would really hate to be one of the three people in the ****ing universe who are actually well-rounded, because then they can’t relate to anybody else’s inner shit.” Right on Anna! … She then followed up with, “Sometimes I meet people who are too confident. I’m like, I don’t even like being around you, you’re boring, get a neurosis, then we’ll talk.” It’s quite something that she actually said all this stuff, but what´s even more impressive is that I fancy her words made it into print because Anna made sure she was not misquoted. I say this with total confidence as she also said to the magazine on the business of puberty: “I was a very late bloomer, I was the smallest in my class, always telling myself, ‘I’m never getting boobs!’ I remember being comforted by hearing that guys like small boobs and big boobs, they like any boobs!’ At the time I was like, ‘that is excellent news!’ I said I would get to Anna´s hilarious Twitter account shortly, and that was it right there, yes indeed! She has already posted this story of her small chestiness on her Twitter account … Irrepressible honesty! ONE OF my greatest influences to want to become a writer was Neil Simon; a New Yorker who wrote countless stage plays including The Odd Couple that was made into a wonderfully funny movie in 1968. A very average US TV show ran for 5 years from 1970, and I now find out that Mathew Perry (Chandler in Friends) has plans to make his own TV version. Hallowed Ground Matthew … Hallowed Ground!
WOODY ALLEN turned 79 last month, but their doesn´t seem to be any letting up in his work ethic. He´s just signed a deal with Amazon´s video streaming service for 4 x 30 minute episodes of ´Untitled Woody Allen Project´ to be shown in the US, UK and Germany. “I don’t know how I got into this, I have no ideas and I’m not sure where to begin,” Woody said in a statement. Sounds promising?
THE VICAR of Dibley ran on the BBC from 1994 to 2007, and featured Dawn French and a cast of proper actors who clearly loved the scripts written by the prolific Richard Curtis. They´re making a one-off special for Comic Relief´s Red Nose Day on March 13th, but it will be called ´The Bishop of Dibley´ to echo the Church’s historic decision to allow female bishops. Will Dawn get the Bishop´s job or won’t she? RE-BOOTING movies is when a bunch of famous peeps decide to make their own version of a film that went before. Ben Affleck has been reported as saying he will be re-booting Alfred Hitchcock´s 1951 black and white thriller ´Strangers on a Train’. If this truly is the case then you are in for a real treat, as the original lays at No. 32 in the American Film Institute´s all-time top 100.

Life Coach
WITH A background in family and matrimonial mediation, Life Coach Sara Bell helps Readers with their daily worries. If you are having difficulties with relationships, family, work or any other aspect of your life, then help is at hand.
Teenage son worries My teenage son is shy and lacks confidence. He hasn’t always been like this. He has stopped going out with his friends from school and now stays in the house playing on his computer games. He is a little overweight, his friends make fun of him because of it, and he can’t seem to stand up for himself. I can say from personal experience that Martial Arts are a great way to build self confidence and boost social skills. It is also an excellent tool when dealing with situations of conflict in a non violent way. Going along to classes will mean he will meet new people, which will be helpful. And it is always a good idea to have friends and interests outside of school. I wouldn’t worry about him too much, as confidence is acquired with age and experience, in most cases, but it won’t hurt for him to get away from those computer games and get fit.
Keeping up with the Joneses
My wife spends money, that we haven’t got, on things like clothes, mobile phones, handbags etc. The amount of dresses and shoes she buys is phenomenal. She says that she has to keep up with the latest fashions and trends, otherwise people will think she is poor. Her friends look down on others and are particularly materialistic and judgemental. It sounds like ‘keeping up with Joneses’ is important to your wife. The fact that she is spending money you don’t have is worrying. You have to talk to her and make her understand that it can only end with you getting seriously into debt, and losing everything. Explain that you think she might have a problem and could be addicted. In reality, if others judge a person for not measuring up in life, it is they who have a problem. These people need to be left to their insecurities and your wife should distance herself and get herself some real friends who want to spend time with her for herself.

Pelvic Pain? Never self-diagnose! PELVIC PAIN is rarely experienced by men. Nearly all sufferers will be women. Pain in the pelvic region may be sudden (acute) and severe, or could be mild and last for months (chronic). ACUTE PAIN Pelvic pain that comes on suddenly for the first time is called ‘acute pelvic pain’. If you have acute pelvic pain, see your GP immediately to find out the cause and to start any necessary treatment. The most common causes of acute pelvic pain in women who are not pregnant are: Urinary tract infection – you’ll probably also have pain or a burning sensation when you urinate and you may need to urinate more often Acute pelvic inflammatory disease – a bacterial infection of the uterus, fallopian tubes or ovaries, which often follows Chlamydia or a Gonorrhoea infection Appendicitis Constipation or bowel spasm – this may be brought on by changes in diet, medication, or in rare cases an obstruction of the bowel Ovarian cyst – a fluid-filled sac that develops on an ovary and causes pelvic pain when it becomes
twisted or bursts Less common causes of acute pelvic pain in women who are not pregnant are: Pelvic abscess – a collection of pus between the uterus and the vagina Endometriosis – a long-term condition where small pieces of uterine lining are found outside the uterus (such as on the ovaries), which leads to painful periods CHRONIC PAIN If you’ve had pelvic pain for six months or more that either comes and goes or is continuous, it is known as chronic pelvic pain. Chronic pelvic pain is more intense than ordinary period pain and lasts for longer. It affects around one in six women. Causes include: Endometriosis Chronic pelvic inflammatory disease Irritable bowel syndrome
Ulcerative colitis Crohn’s Disease A recurrent urinary tract infection Chronic interstitial cystitis – longterm inflammation of the bladder Hernia: where an internal part of the body pushes through a weakness in the surrounding muscle or tissue wall Trapped or damaged nerves in the pelvic area Recurrent ovarian cysts Uterine fibroids Uterine prolapse If you have chronic pelvic pain, you should see a doctor without delay as it important to find the cause and then treat accordingly. Under no circumstances should you ever try to self-diagnose!

tech Running Antispyware scans HI THERE: I have just tried to do three SUPER Antispyware scans. On the first it picked up a PUP immediately and then 72 tracking cookies until it got to this point: (x86)HKLM\system\controlset002\services\ YahooAUService - then it stopped scanning, although the scanning ‘clock’ was still going around. As it was clearly going no further (I left it running for over 8 hours the first time) I then started another scan. This again got to the same point and stopped, the third attempted scan was the same. The computer was turned off at the end of each scan before another was attempted. Any ideas? Regards Robin Aunty says: From researching this problem, you are not alone. Apparently there have been some issues where the Yahoos Automatic Update service does stop some Superantispyware scans. One way to get around this is, if you do not use any Yahoo services, uninstall any Yahoo program from your Control Panel. Or, as you have found, use Antimalware bytes instead…

Where has it all gone? HELLO AUNTY and Happy New Year. Please can you tell me why have Ask.com taken over Google and where has my Speed Dial gone? I have used Speed Dial over the last 4 years and miss it. At the age of 81 it seems the new learning curves are persistent and my brain would rather enjoy other subjects - not just constantly committed to reading manuals, etc. Thanks for your inevitable reply! Meri J Aunty says: If your home page or search options have changed from Google to Ask, then that will be down to the fact that you have installed software that has done this for you. Some software changes home page or search settings when you do a “default” install of software. Which is why it is sometimes best to use the “advanced” options when installing software, so you can see exactly what will be installed and changed, and gives you the option not do change the start page or search options. Simply go into the settings of your internet browser, and change the home page or default search engine back to what you want – i.e. Google... To change your home page in Internet Explorer: Go to settings Go to Internet Options Then you have an option box, where you can input the pages you want IE to open when you start IE. So if you want Google to open every time you open IE, type in www.google.co.uk (for the UK version of Google), or google.es (for the Spanish version), or Google.com for IE to determine which local versions it should use - which depends on the country you are in. The process is very similar for other internet browsers like Firefox and Chrome. I would also assume that whatever software you installed to change your Google to Ask also did something to your Speed Dial. So simply reinstall Speed Dial.
Android problem HI AUNTY: I have a problem with my Android tablet purchased 31/07/14. 8GB A23 Dual Core Android 4.2 tablet PC Bluetooth camera 1M Red is the information I have. When I switched on yesterday across the screen in large letters was DEMO: I’ve tried all I know to get rid of it but it remains, the tablet will not function properly. Can you help? Bob
Aunty says: Many people have had an issue with the word DEMO appearing on the Android tablet. Some have solved this by resetting the tablet to factory settings - note you may lose all personal data on the tablet. It maybe that the manufacturer of your tablet, which I cannot see mentioned, may have an update file available on their website that fixes this issue. As for some tablets, an update file / patch has been made available, and the problem has

A canal turn THE CALPE Gilbert and Sullivan Society heads for the waterways of historic Venice for its spring production popular operetta ‘The Gondoliers’.
Gone to rehearsals!
By Jack Troughton First staged at the Savoy Theatre in December 1889, it was a huge hit and ran for a massive 554 performances – a story of tangled love affairs, royalty and republicanism. You may find that something you are currently very unsure of actually works well and in your favour. Time will cement things into stone, but if you do have anything to niggle about do it this week before the denouement and have faith in your actions. Venus shows her fickle side this week with a take on with Pisces and a sensitive but provocative squaring of Saturn. You are about to have a head in the clouds week when surely nothing could go wrong, but in your mind’s eye something needs to be done with regard to long term solutions so you can always have this spring to your step! The Sun conjuncts Mercury at the end of a busy week, and it is time to lock in those golden moments to be preserved and savoured as they deserve to be. Somebody has surprised you and come up trumps, and there is no better solution to your current wants and needs to be a part of the success that this highly successful relationship brings. The Moon’s phase midweek makes skilfull and appropriate changes to your mood and elevates your plans and ambitions to a higher state of play. Whilst you have settled old scores as of late, and removed the debris of old and pointless aquaintances, now you have to work on yourself and be unafraid and open as to your true desires. Mercury shares the responsibility this month in a take over blessed by the salient actions of the Sun. This gives you the green light to achieve that which you know that you have to, regardless of what anybody else says or does. It is vital and it means a lot to prioritise, but when all is said and done your heart is in a better place, albeit a very different one. Mercury sextiles Uranus in an action that brings changes, and sweeps away the burdens of the past in pursuance of better action for the future. Changes of this nature are inspiring; and necessary action, brought about by the tireless energies of Mercury, and the forward thinking mighty Uranus, herald and instigate new beginnings too. With ardent Venus ensconced in dreamy Pisces there comes a time to sit back and plan the future and to infuse love into a situation that has gone somewhat out of control. Mixed messages have been sent and it is high time to evaluate what is needed all round so that everyone can be happy and you can get on with the job in hand your way. It is a determined Mars that takes Pluto full on towards the end of a week. Above all you do not want or wish to see all your good work being overturned on a mere whim. Whereas structure will provide the necessary backing support it is high time you looked out at a different direction to steer things back to basics, back to where you all should belong. With opposition this week from the Sun and Venus; your planetary leader, Jupiter, has the abundance of luck and fortune ready and willing but nobody to pass it on to. You have been generous to a fault, making allowances and concessions, but this is all in vain if those it is direceted to do not have the good grace to accept what is on offer now. Blessed with some very positive energy this week there has been a resolution and you are about to show those who doubted you just what you are capable of. You may very well choose to forgive but you will never forget the way that you have been treated; but your consistency has seen you through and the reward of now is unexpected but deserved. Uranus sides with Mercury and acts as a magnet to attract whatever it is you are seeking right now. With a strong brief to continue the good work you have started, you will find that support comes from some very unexpected sources, but that it will also serve to set a precedent with others who will conclude that you are not to be messed with. The great passion of the Goddess Venus is to spread a little love all around, and this week there seems to be some love in everything you do. Perhaps now you can better see your individual talent and artistic energies in a far different light, and act on every possibility with positive action. A project beckons as you are sorely needed to steer the ship.

Aquarius rising WE ARE, once again, in Aquarian time and we are encouraged to bring light into life and to bask in the positive energies that Aquarius brings us. The light of Spirit will be illuminated and presented to us as a beacon of good intention shining out during a cold and dark time of year. Enabling those of you with psychic abilities, Aquarius calls on us all to awaken our conscious energies in response to the needs of others and to open freely our sensitivity and self expression. Indeed we can feel the light of Spirit shining out on everything that we do, and peace reigning supreme in our hearts. During this Aquarian period our responsibilities greatly increase and our burdens are somewhat lightened as a result. As we become more in tuned to the great and capable Aquarian energy we are called upon to help to make this World a better place, and to open freely to self expression. Many of us waited for the Aquarian Age to dawn, and it did, not so long ago. Jupiter truly did align with Mars, but peace has not really served to rule on this, our Planet unfortunately. With the recent appalling tragedies in Paris, and Worldwide terrorism showing no mercy in a brutal melee of violence, stealth, greed and a shocking abuse of power, there couldn’t be a chance for peace anyway. Aquarius is the third Air sign, and is masculine and fixed and it is time to closely examine the effect felt by the other fixed signs of the Zodiac as the Aquarian energies will be for them more noticeable, even to the extent of them feeling a subliminal hypnotic influence. Scorpio gives us a chance to
Kenny‛s Postbag
look deeply into our motivations and grounds our unconscious thoughts and feelings. Leos will feel the free flowing creative expression taking up their time, and Taurus, ever constantly with one ear connected to planet Earth, will insist that we all strongly remain closely in touch with reality. Aquarius is the sign associated with freedom just because it is within the boundaries of Aquarius that we feel a freeing of our Spirit. We are given the green light since honesty and wisdom and truth prevail and we can better see the true workings of Spirit minus negativities such as fear and pettiness. Aquarian time brings us an ability to achieve. We can accomplish much and we are open to ideas and new inventions with the freedom to explore. As we find better ways of doing things and the encouragement we need is there as backing we have a spring in our step and have the courage of our convictions. Independence is the true hallmark of Aquarian excellence, and as we seek and take appropriate advice to heart, and become true to ourselves, the inevitable result is no further struggle to find the peaceful alternatives that can ground, sensitise and focus us. Remember that Aquarians are strong personalities, in fact with a star quality all of their own, with famous names like: Harry Styles, Shakira, Justin Timberlake, John Travolta, Phil Collins and Robbie Williams, to name but a few. We all have a personal star within us in Aquarian time and we can make it shine if we try. Aquarius is the sign of friendship, so maybe this next few weeks we can learn to treat one another and ourselves as the friends we should be!?

KENNY, I have been finding feathers all around my apartment for a few weeks now. My partner died in September 2014 and a spiritual friend has told me he is trying to communicate with me. Is this possible? Gwen J. Highly probable I would say Gwen. Contact is possible and sadly many of those living in the Spirit World find their individual methods of gaining attention are ignored or feared. Many say that feathers are symbolic of an angel presence, so your partner appears to be in good hands. If you need any help in making that first and vital connection please let me know.

Cruising made simpler thanks to Beniconnect
A MEMORABLE and unique event took place in Benidorm this week – the collaboration of two family run businesses: the acclaimed Fred.Olsen Cruise Lines and Beniconnect Travel Agency – a local company based in Benidorm. By Irena Bodnarec THE ALLIANCE came about thanks to senior sales executive at Beniconnect, Melanie Howell, who attended a trade travel fair in the UK last Autumn and made contact with the cruise company. A presentation was held at the Casino Mediterraneo on Tuesday evening for press, officials and travel industry representatives, hosted by the Perez Parker family – owners of Beniconnect. Juan José Perez Parker, Director of the company gave a welcome and introductory speech before handing over to the dignitaries. Gema Amor - Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Tourism and Sebastian Fernandez Miralles – Director General of Tourism in the Valencian Regional Government attended and congratulated both of the companies in their speeches on the exciting new venture. International Sales Manager for Fred.Olsen Cruise Lines - Kate Wooldridge flew over from the UK that morning and gave an informative presentation about the ethos of the company and what sets them apart from all the other companies in the cruise sector. Much like Beniconnect, they are a family run, hands on business, which was vitally important to their beliefs and principals - and the motivating force to partner up and work together. Fred.Olsen have their headquarters in Norway but are based in the UK, which is where their fleet of 4 ships are ported. 90% of passengers are from the UK, but with this new collaboration, the British ex-pat market brings with it a huge potential for change. All four ships offer a traditional experience but with a personal touch and distinct personality, which the huge ships cannot match. The largest in the fleet – the Balmoral, holds 1349 passengers and smallest, the Black Watch takes a mere 800 meaning they can dock at many more destinations not available to the massive liners. One of the main attractions for the British market is that all the crew is English speaking, with all announcements only made in English and currency onboard is UK sterling. The ships go to 81 countries and 245 ports – but most excitingly for British ex-pats living here, they are offering exclusive departures for Beniconnect customers from mainland Spain this coming April and September, so no need to fly back to the UK! On Wednesday morning there was a second presentation, this time to the
Melanie Howell - Snr sales rep at Beniconnect, Rada Haupt - winner of raffle and Kate from Fred Olsen
public, which was attended by over 300 people. There was a video presentation of the fleet and routes and benefits explained of booking a Fred.Olsen experience. One point, which was of great interest to the audience, was that they offer single occupancy in single cabins at no surcharge. Everyone who attended was given a raffle ticket for the prize draw, which took place at the end of the presentation. The
much sought after first prize of a 5 night cruise was won by Mrs Rada Haupt from Alfaz del Pi – who was delighted and stunned in equal measures. All attendees where offered complimentary drinks and canapés – and a 10% discount on any cruises booked, which had a very positive response. Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin
o – ue root-changing verbs The ¡HOLA! FIRST of all the answer to last week’s million dollar question (if only!) which was, if “lo siento” means “I’m sorry”, how do we say “We’re sorry” in Spanish? The answer is “lo sentimos”. LET’S SEE, if “siento” means “I feel” and “lo siento” which translates as “I’m sorry” literally means “I feel it”, then “we are sorry” has to be the literal translation of “we feel it”. “We feel” is “sentimos” with the “lo” for “it” in front, so that gives us: “lo sentimos”. A better idea is to avoid doing anything that you jointly have to apologise for! Today we’re moving forward to our second most common category of root changing verbs, and that is “o to ue”. I can hear your whoops of delight from here. This is the second category of just three, so we’re making good progress. Incidentally these root changes, which are of course actually based on sound changes, are repeated in all sorts of other word groups, and not just root-changing verbs. “O to ue” is a particularly common sound change which occurs in a whole range of words, for example in numbers: “nueve” “noventa”, and furniture words: “muebles” (furniture) “mobiliario” (furniture shop). Okay, back to the point. First of all we need to realise that everything we have learnt so far about root-changing verbs still applies. The endings are exactly the same as they are for standard verbs. That means that the –ar, -er and –ir endings which we learnt a few weeks ago and repeated quite a lot, remain exactly the same for all our root changing verbs. These ending changes are what give us the information about “who” and “when” an action is performed, so they can’t really be tampered with (not that we’re tampering with verbs, but you know what I mean). The other principle that remains exactly the same concerns which forms change at the root and which do not. Here is the
rule again, set in stone: 1st, 2nd and 3rd persons singular and 3rd person plural make the root change, whereas 1st and 2nd persons plural do not. This is to do with where the beat falls on the word, for all the reasons already given in previous articles. So, given all those reminders, if I were to write a few examples of “o-ue” root changing verbs, you really ought to be able to work them out for yourselves! However, I’m not quite that cruel, so here are some I did earlier, in fact one each of the –ar, -er and –ir groups of verbs. SOÑAR – to dream Sueño Soñamos Sueñas Soñáis Sueña Sueñan DORMIR – to sleep Duermo Dormimos Duermes Dormís Duerme Duermen As a matter of interest, when we dream in Spanish we don’t “dream of” or “dream about” we “dream with” – “soñar con”. Now you can say to your loved one: “Sueño contigo todas las noches” (I dream about you every night). They won’t believe you but they might just be impressed by your Spanish! See you next week.

Focus on Golf Powered by Campbell Lamont Golf, partnered by BayRadio
Are you au fait with Social Media? DO YOU blog?
By Tony Myles THE RAPID rise in social media activity is phenomenal. Just a few years ago very few of us would have ventured into the wide open space that is FaceBook. Here, in the virtual world, half of the world’s population expose their everyday lives to the scrutiny of the other half. It has become the de facto method of sharing information amongst friends. The reason for the rapid rise is that it doesn’t actually stop there, as the friends of your friends often have free access to the shared information, which may easily be forwarded to their friends. And so it goes on. THERE IS A WORD FOR IT - ‘VIRAL’. For any commercial organisation this is the holy grail. The explosive nature of a ‘viral’
item is truly breathtaking. In the blink of an eye your message can be viewed by millions of users and if it continues to capture the imagination that number can rise to billions. What has this to do with golf in general, and Campbell Lamont in particular? The answer is that in the coming months we will be distributing more information through this dynamic channel. Here we will be posting details of our competitions and other events and also displaying photographs of the winners along with other articles of interest to our community. It is also the area where your views and comments will be welcome and will be seen instantly. As Campbell mentioned during a recent broadcast - “Part of our planned expansion of services to the golfing community is the objective to make it easy and efficient for

our clients to receive information which is relevant and current. Our Social Media strategy will enable us to achieve that in a very dynamic way.” In the short term Campbell Lamont will be posting more information on our FaceBook page and hope that you will find us there and ‘Like’ what you find. https://www.facebook.com/pages/ Campbell-Lamont-Golf
Tony M - I see you are getting into social media. Campbell - With any new technology I always want to see it proven, before I get involved. Tony M - It has been around for a long time.
