A word from the Editors desk...
Hola!
THE HORSES are on the track as the race to victory in the EU membership stakes got underway this week and much-fancied runners ´Leave´ and ´Remain´ cantered off on the four-month marathon that ends on the 23rd June finishing line. Television news, papers, and social media are now scrutinising every minor detail of campaign rhetoric to assess the chances of either side, while the pollsters – like bookies – fling out the ever-changing odds. To date, Prime Minister David Cameron is busy backing the brave new deal he won in foreign fields to convince voters ´in´ is the place to be – Mayor of London, Boris Johnson nailed his colours to the ´out´ team, which immediately put on a little spurt with the ´BoJo´ bounce. Referenda are notoriously fickle animals. Do voters carefully consider the pros and cons or is it merely a matter of red, white and blue against that blue flag featuring a lot of gold stars? At the end of the day, the side with the most support wins either way. Expats are in an unusual position. About half are entitled to have their say – the bitter pill for the remainder is the long-promised vote for life is not arriving in time. Sorry guys, you are mere spectators…blame those in the corridors of power for an inability to get organised; instead hiding behind excuses. However, those who can, please register to vote and play the game called democracy. Meanwhile, the postman delivering to RTN towers is suffering again. The readers´ postbag is full of concerns about rising levels of street crime. Spain remains a safe country but please exercise a little caution – in Hill Street Blues speak, be careful out there.

Clampdown on crime
Consul Sarah-Jane Morris (left) and organizer Karew Cowles (right)
by JACK TROUGHTON THE BRITISH Consulate is backing a new initiative to make the streets of Benidorm – Spain´s most famous holiday resort – a safer place for visitors. Consul Sarah-Jane Morris met with worried business representatives and residents who believe street crime is soaring in tourist areas in the town and are worried holidaymakers go elsewhere. And yesterday (Thursday) she backed the fledgling association BUST – Benidorm United for Safer Tourism - at a meeting in the Sol Pelicanos Hotel in the hub of an area frequented by British visitors. Mrs Morris, who was later scheduled to meet Mayor Toni Perez, tour operators, and the hotel owners group HOSBEC, said she seen publicity relating to issues involving crime in the resort. She said the consulate had been successful in helping reduce crime figures at Alicante Airport by working with the authorities and being able to indicate the size of the problem. The consul was told of rising problems with pick-pockets, muggers, prostitution, and violence triggered by excessive consumption of drink and drugs. It was pointed out there were 700 officers of the Policia Local and National Police in the town but they needed a greater presence in the central strip of Benidorm at night – and victims needed greater support and help in reporting crime. And Mrs Morris was told that it was felt that the authorities were not addressing the problem and tourism was merely a “cash machine”. PROTECT She said it was Spain´s responsibility to protect tourists and the way forward was to “influence” the mayor and the authorities through continued pressure. “There are various ways of addressing the issue but I don´t think any one thing will fix it and it will not be fixed overnight – and as businesses you don´t want us to give out travel advice ´don´t come to Benidorm´ because that will affect business.” BUST hopes to warn people arriving in Benidorm to be careful and to support victims report crimes so the true size of the problem can be found. “I think keeping an incident log is interesting – if you could share it with us and the Spanish authorities, we can do something with that, it would be really helpful,” said the consul. “And if these people are prepared to give contact details, that would be really helpful as well.” The Consulate is also to look at a publicity campaign run with the town hall and BUST to raise awareness of the problem of street crime and urge visitors to be careful. And Mrs Morris proposed meeting again in three month´s time with the group and the Spanish authorities saying a “sustained effort” was needed in 2016. “We need to concentrate on what is in our gift, what we can actually do.”

Valentine’s Day mugging by JACK THOUGHTON
BRAVE PENSIONER Irene Stafford is warning expats to be on their guard after falling victim to a brazen street robbery on Valentine´s Day just 100 yards from her home. The mugger struck at around 12.30pm as the 77-year-old walked with her friend Sandra along a main street in Los Alcazares and grabbed gold chains around her neck. Sadly, the thief ran off with a gold locket containing a lock of hair of her husband Don who passed away 16 months ago – a priceless and irreplaceable keepsake to Irene. And the incident happened at a time people are contacting RTN worried about the rising level of street crime in the Murcia town and other coastal communities popular with expats. “It was just awful and I feel so nervous now and scared to go out. I just don´t trust anyone – I have lived in Spain for the past 11 years and I have always felt more or less safe, but not anymore.” She said a youth aged about 20 was walking towards them having just crossed the road. “I just expected him to walk passed. He just dived straight at me and put his hand under my chin and with his other hand tried to grab the gold chains around my neck. “I was able to save some but he managed to get the gold locket. He broke the chain and ended up with the locket. “I pushed him away and I screamed and he just ran off with it in his hand. We could not run after him, we are both in our seventies but I shouted really loudly – I don´t usually swear but I did that day.” Irene, who is originally from Yorkshire, said her screams were heard and people came onto balconies to see what was wrong. Two men even gave chase in their car but the mugger ran down Isla De Tabarca and vanished despite the good Samaritans combing the area. IMPORTANT Irene has walked the streets of the area in the vain hope the robber threw the distinctive locket away. “The locket is very important to me, my husband died 16 months ago and it had a lock of his hair inside…it couldn´t be any dearer to me than that. “The locket just has so much sentimental value – I cannot replace it but to that lad it means nothing he will just sell it. I now wish I had retaliated more and given him something back but you just go into shock.” Irene, who has had a purse stolen before, underlined the growing problem of crime. “There has been a lot going on recently, it is terrible.” And she added: “Los Alcazares is such a nice town and it used to be lovely and you used to feel safe, although there would be the odd pick-pocketing but now there is more crime happening.” Irene did go to the police with an interpreter to report the crime and give a description of her attacker. She said he was tall and slim, well-dressed in a black tracksuit, with black short hair. “He was very tall and had to crouch to reach my throat. He must have seen an opportunity – perhaps because it was Valentine´s Day he wanted a present to give to his girlfriend. I hope e rots in hell.” Irene wants to warn everyone along the coast to take care and repeated the police advice; always wear jewellery under clothing. She also hopes someone will recognise the oval shaped locket which has the large letters ´I´ and Irene Stafford ´D´ on both sides.
#NEWSBITES TRAGEDY AT AIRFIELD TWO MEN have died following a light aircraft crash at the weekend near Alicante. An ultralight plane crashed, on Sunday morning, at Mutxamel, killing both men on board, despite emergency service personnel’s efforts to save them. The light aircraft was travelling to the airfield in the town when it is believed to have struck power lines near the runway as it came in to land. Despite the attendance of fire crews and a medical helicopter, the accident was a recovery, rather than a rescue, of the two men.

Dog run over deliberately by police
POLICE OFFICERS in Wales said they were forced to run over a dog to stop it suffering. In the early hours of Monday the North Wales police received a call that a dog was running loose on the A55 dual carriageway, causing traffic to swerve, with several near collisions only just being avoided. The traffic officers were then forced to make a decision, which a spokesperson said was “not taken lightly” to run over and kill the runaway, because of the risk to human life. Darren Wareing, Chief Inspector for the traffic division, said “the control room received several calls shortly after 3am, saying that a dog was running loose on the A55. Our officers attempted several times to catch the animal, with one of them being bitten.” The dog was reported to be running in and out of the high speed traffic, but, as fears grew that there would be a serious crash, they had to consider what their options were. Wareing said: “The officers at the scene ruled out other methods of destruction on the grounds of public safety, and decided that to run over the dog at high speed would ensure that it did not suffer. Both officers have their own dogs and did not take the decision lightly.”
British fugitive arrested
A WANTED British man, who had fled to the Costa Blanca, has been arrested in Alicante. Officers from the Fugitive Location Group of the Judicial Police Commissioner General, and the Group of Violent Crime UDEV of Alicante, arrested a man who was wanted on suspicion of four sexual assaults on a minor. The young girl, the daughter of his former partner, was aged just nine when the British man sexually assaulted her, with four incidents occurring between January 1991 and June 1993. The warrants originated from Dublin in Ireland where the attacks are recorded as taking place, and the man is now being held until he can be returned to face the original warrants.
Costas affected by African sand THE WEEKEND ended with many towns, up and down the coast, experiencing dull yellow, orange or pink skies, as sand from North Africa was lifted and carried to mainland Spain. The dust storms are a common meteorological hazard in arid and semi-arid regions. They are usually caused by thunderstorms, or strong pressure gradients associated with cyclones, that increase wind speed over a
wide area. The strong winds lift large amounts of sand and dust from bare, dry soils into the atmosphere, transporting them hundreds to thousands of kilometres. Luckily for most areas, the dust storm was not accompanied by rain. In the past, when the two meteorological events have occurred at the same time, cars, houses, and items such as patio furniture, have been left covered in a wet sandy stain.

Pursuit results in arrest by CAROLINE TYSZKA
LOCAL POLICE in Villajoyosa have been congratulated for their quick response to a vehicle theft which resulted in an arrest. A young man, who had allegedly stolen a vehicle, was speeding through the town of Villajoyosa in the early hours one morning last week, and caught the attention of a local patrol vehicle. The vehicle, which had been stolen in Murcia, was driven at high speed through various traffic lights which were on red, and also travelled up one way streets in the wrong direction. Other police vehicles joined the pursuit, which finally ended near the regional Marina Baixa hospital, after the driver crashed into one of the police vehicles. Jaime Ramis, from the Security Council, said, “I want to congratulate all the officers involved in catching this young man.” The driver of the vehicle, who had no licence and a record of similar offences, was detained by a judge.

Claim EU vote
Friday, February 26 - Thursday, March 3 2016
BRITISH EXPATS are urged to register to vote and make their voices heard in the historic referendum over EU membership on 23rd June. As predicted in RTN three weeks ago; David Cameron has now set the date for the ballot and all those eligible to cast a vote under the controversial 15year rule must register, or re-register, to have their say. The Prime Minister maintains he has won a deal that is right to ‘remain’ within the European Union; the campaign to ‘leave’ has been bolstered by political heavyweights Michael Gove and Boris Johnson – the so-called ‘BoJo’ bounce. However, it also clear along the coast that there is anger for those expats disqualified from voting because of the time they have lived abroad – and growing worries about the future should Britain pull out of Europe. The UK Government has promised a ‘vote-for-life’ for all expats around the world but the legislation will not reach the statute books in time for the June ballot. But a Private Members Bill brought by MP Christopher Chope is due for a second reading in Parliament today (Friday). The Overseas Election Bill seeks to restore voting rights to all expats. Vice Consul Sara Munsterjhelm attended the Annual General Meeting of Calpe’s Association of foreign Property Owners on Tuesday and said it was important all those eligible to vote in the referendum registered. “It’s a referendum. The Government is going to respect the outcome; the government is putting the decision in the hands of the British people,” she said. IMPORTANT “The important thing is to make sure our voices are heard. If you are eligible – I know there are some who are not – it is important. Your vote does matter and your vote does count.” Ms Munsterjhelm said she understood the concerns over what would happen if there was a vote to leave the EU in June. “The Government has only just set the referendum date. At the moment, all the efforts on the part of Mr Cameron and the government are focussed on getting British nationals to stay in the EU. “If the vote goes to a ‘no’, and we are going to leave; all matters regarding things like health care, residency, and pensions will have to be renegotiated. “The Government will make sure that at all times at the top of the list is your welfare – I don’t want you to think that if we leave you are on your own; that’s not the message. Your welfare is and will always be the top priority.” It is believed there are around two million expats living in Europe – 100,000 are registered on the town hall ‘padron’ within the area covered by the British Consulate in Alicante. Told people barred from voting because of the time lapse were “aggrieved”, the Vice Consul said there was a pledge to extend the franchise before the next general election. “I know for such a crucial thing, the EU Referendum, you all want to vote and there is a large percentage who will not be able to,” she acknowledged. Anyone who was last registered to vote in the UK in the last 15 years can register or renew their registration at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote and fill in their details. They can vote by post, by proxy, or if in the UK on polling day, in person.

ALTEA TRADERS PLAN NEW ASSOCIATION TRADERS IN Altea have entered into discussions to form a trade association that will help establish a united front.
cracks in the dome
Urgent church repairs needed by CAROLINE TYSZKA
THE DOME of the Callosa d’en Sarria church has been found to have major structural damage requiring urgent repairs. The dome of the 18th century church in Callosa d’en Sarria has tilted 20 centimetres and, whilst there is no immediate danger to people using the church,
the structure needs urgent repairs so that the cracks found do not cause further damage. Following detailed investigations by a team of specialists, using ground radar and other techniques, it has been discovered that the church sits on another building, more than likely a mosque, and that a supporting column holding
the dome is damaged. The town hall began a restoration project back in 2013 and set a target to complete the repairs by 2023. Josep Saval, mayor of the town, said that “we must remedy these defects soon, so that the column does not deteriorate the dome further and cause irreversible damage.”

Businesses in Altea are currently unrepresented as a collective, following the Association of Altea (AEPA) being disbanded two years ago, with the local council now announcing that they have no intention of forming a trade association. Anna Alvado, councillor for commerce, said “any future association must be completely independent, and we do not think political parties should interfere in the constitution of the association.” The council has agreed to give the traders rooms for their meetings as they arrange to become an association, with businesses being invited to register their interest at the Casa de Cultura in Altea. Registration will be open until March 18th and then, on Tuesday 5th April, at 8.30pm, there will be a meeting at the same venue to form the statutes for the group and give it a name.

Facing up to dementia BRITISH CONSUL teams and expat support charities are working together in a bid to improve help available for people affected by dementia.
The consulates in Alicante and Malaga and associations such as the Royal British Legion, Age Concern Espana, HELP, and Age Care, aim to provide a gateway to available support. Consulate teams hosted “learning events” this week in Alicante, Murcia and Malaga, led by UK-based dementia experts Sue Brewin and Su Burns. The meetings were aimed at informing support groups about the different types of dementia and ways to overcome barriers to communicating with people affected by the illness. Research by the Alzheimer’s Society estimates that the number of people diagnosed with dementia in Western

Europe will double by 2050. One in three people are likely to be affected. As a result, support charities are likely to see an increase in the numbers of people seeking help and need more expertise in dealing with the problem. The Costas are home to large numbers of British residents; many are elderly and some have substantial care needs but they may have little or no resources or a family network to support them. QUALIFY And to qualify for help from Spanish social services, such as home help, British residents must be previously registered with the authorities – signing up on the ‘padron’ – the town hall register – and for the health service. Charmaine Arbouin, British Consul for Southern Spain and the Canary islands, said: “Organisations such as Cruz
Roja Espana and Age concern can be a lifeline for people affected by dementia. However, they cannot meet all your needs. “I strongly urge expats to register on the padron and for healthcare now, before health issues arise. You can then access support from the Spanish system via the local health centre and town hall social services when you need it.” She added: “If you fail to register, then you are unlikely to get social services’ help later.” Dementia covers several types of brain disorder, including Alzheimer’s. There is no cure and the disorders are usually progressive; common symptoms include memory loss, confusion, speech difficulties, and problems in understanding. Ram raider gang arrested
Guns seized
by CAROLINE TYSZKA
GUARDIA CIVIL officers in Madrid have broken up their largest ram raiding gang and arrested 11 members of the network. Officers arrested ten men and one woman, aged between 18 and 25, who had been operating in the Madrid area over a period of time. The members of the group are charged with committing 64 robberies in phone shops, perfume shops, bars and restaurants, as well as the theft of luxury cars in the provinces of Madrid, Toledo and Guadalajara. Officers also recovered goods and vehicles to the approximate value of 1,200,000€. The gang used stolen vehicles to commit their raids, choosing particularly high powered cars to ensure a quick
getaway, as well as batons and sprays to disable shops’ security systems. In one attack, the raiders were detected leaving the scene travelling at 200 kph, and damaging other vehicles, as they made their escape. The group’s members are collectively accused of crimes of burglary, theft of vehicles, belonging to a criminal group,

dangerous driving, theft, falsification of license plates and malicious damage. Following the arrests, properties were searched in Toledo and Madrid, where hand guns were discovered, along with various tools to assist in their crimes, as well as 500 containers containing perfumes, over 300 mobile phones and 10 vehicles.
GUARDIA CIVIL traffic officers in Córdoba have been hailed as heroes for saving a young baby’s life. The two traffic department officers were on patrol Saturday evening when they were approached by a woman who was clearly distressed and saying she needed help with her baby. The 18 month old boy was unconscious and not breathing, as the officers attended to him at the side of the road, on the A431 near to Villarrubia. Once they had managed to revive the little boy, they took him and his mother to the Reina Sofía maternity hospital in their patrol car. Reports are that the young boy is making a good recovery.

Robert Pickton
A CANADIAN serial killer, who had written his memoirs and smuggled them out of prison, has had his book withdrawn from sale, hours after it appeared online with Amazon. Robert Pickton, who was convicted in 2007 of murdering six women, had written the book, which protested his innocence, and smuggled it out of the Kent Institution prison where he is being held. The book, entitled “Pickton: In His Own Words”, was published by Outskirts Press in Colorado, who specialise in
helping authors self-publish their works. The Canadian multi-millionaire pig farmer reportedly confessed to 49 murders, although he was only convicted of six, with a further twenty cases being suspended. He now claims that he is innocent and was framed by the Canadian police. Pickton was sentenced to life in prison with no parole for at least 25 years, following the guilty verdict, where it was revealed that he fed the remains of some of the women to his pigs. In a U-turn, the publisher asked Amazon to remove the book from sale, and is-
Chocolate product recall THE GIANT company Mars has recalled thousands of its chocolate bars throughout Europe, following the discovery of plastic in one of its products.
The recall affects 55 countries, including the UK, France, Netherlands, Germany and Spain, with the company fearing more red pieces of plastic could be found in some of their most popular products. The company traced the problem back to their Dutch factory, and stressed that the recall “only involved the products that were made at the factory in Veghel, the Netherlands.” A spokesperson for the company said “we are currently investigating how this has happened, so have made a voluntary recall as a precaution.” Products with a ‘best before’ date from 19th June 2016 to 8th January 2017 have been affected, with the plastic being found in a bar which was purchased by a German customer on 8th January. The Dutch Food Safety Authority said that the affected products are Mars, Snickers, Celebrations, Milky Way and Mini Mix. This is the first time that the company has had to recall products from its Veghel factory, which has been operating since 1963. Further recall information can be found at www.mars.de.

Mike Morris, the province’s Minister for Public Safety, said “it is not right that a person who caused so much harm to so many people is allowed to profit from such behaviour.” An investigation has now been launched into how the manuscript was smuggled out of the maximum security prison, with victims’ families demanding answers. Ernie Crey, whose sister Dawn’s DNA was among that of 33 women found at Pickton’s Port Coquitlam pig farm, said he was “deeply troubled” by the book.

Music heard in Space by CAROLINE TYSZKA
AUDIO TAPES have been unearthed in which astronauts’ recorded strange sounds which they thought was music. In 1969, when the Apollo crew reached the other side of the moon, they heard eerie “music” which they recorded, but were told by ground crew it was more than likely radio interference. The recording, made by the three NASA astronauts, has been made public for the first time, with engineers unable to confirm exactly what the source of the peculiar whistling noises are. Thomas Stafford, John Young and Eugene Cernan were aboard Apollo 10 at the time, with one of them being heard to say on the recording that it was “outer-space-type music”. Reluctant to tell NASA headquarters what they had heard for fear of being blocked from future missions, the tapes were buried until a Discovery TV series unearthed the audio records. Michael Collins, who flew Apollo 11 solo around the far side of the Moon while fellow astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong became the first men to walk on the surface, said he too had heard an “eerie woo-woo sound”, but he had been told to expect it before his mission.

A NEW LIFE IN THE SUN
IT SEEMS the sunny climate of Spain has not only attracted millions of holidaymakers but also television programme makers, as another “life in the sun” series hit our screens this week. Channel 4’s “A new life in the sun”, produced by Truenorth, first aired on Monday 22nd February at 4pm UK time, and has followed the hopes and dreams of people who have left the UK behind to set up new businesses in France and Spain. The programmes have followed the highs and lows of moving to a foreign land. Viewers have watched as people, such as Steve and his family, relocated to open a bar in the Costa Blanca, and another expat decided to become a fisherman in the Costa del Sol. The Channel 4 programme is already in discussions to make a second series and are looking for British individuals or families that are looking to become expats.

A happy tail by JACK TROUGHTON THE NAME was spelt differently but it was still close enough to spur animal-lovers Maureen and Robin Jackson into welcoming another dog in to their home. Three weeks ago, RTN reported the heartbreak of the Orba couple after losing pet Riley following an operation last November to amputate a leg after the dog – aged six or seven – developed bone cancer. Maureen and Robin had enjoyed Riley’s company for over two years and after grieving over the loss of their dog, a rescue from Pego-based charity LAPS, decided to find another pet. Fate took a hand and they found Reilly being cared for by SCAN, an animal charity in El Verger, and wanting a good home. Aged just over two-year-old, they took him first on a trial basis and last week became
Reilly’s new mum and dad and official owners after signing adoption papers. RTN went to meet Reilly on Monday as he settled into his new surroundings after a year at the shelter and enjoying playing happy families. Robin said: “Maureen was going through the newspapers and saw the name – it was spelt differently but still the same name.” And Maureen explained how Reilly had been found wandering on a mountain. He joined a family with three dogs but when they moved he could not go with them – and instead was rescued by SCAN. “We have had him two weeks now. He is highly intelligent and settling in very well but things are obviously very different after being at the shelter for a year,” she said. “Everything is still very new for him but he is a lovely dog and we are getting along together.”

NEWS BITES Too much gas causes gun battle READERS LOVE
A GUN battle between two rival families started because someone broke wind. What started out as a simple dispute between two young men over flatulence ended up with a man in a critical condition in the Valencia Intensive Care Unit, suffering from gunshot wounds. The two families, both from Torrent, live next to each other and have been involved in previous disputes which have involved firearms. The argument, which broke out late on Sunday, has left four injured, with the 57 year old man known as “Mone” taking three bullets, one of which struck him in the abdomen, causing severe damage to his kidney. The man’s son was also shot, although his leg injury was not considered to be serious, as officers arrested three at the scene.

Jenny has been inspired by Gerogie to produce a colourful collection of work which she believes will compliment the magnificent sculptures on show at the Exposiciones Ajuntament Vell. The exhibition opens on Wednesday 2nd March and continues until Wednesday 30th March, and the gallery at Calle Francsico Zaragoza 2, is open Tuesdays to Saturdays between 10am until 2pm and 4.30pm to 7.30pm. There is also a Grand Opening Night on Friday 4th March between 5pm and 7.30pm.
The detailed records break down the 20,644 users to 5,325 men, 5,948 women, 4,248 boys and 5,123 girls, with January, February and March being the busiest months. Mayte García, councillor for culture, said that “because many students use the library in exam season, it is understandable that the summer months are quieter.” Last year 6.165 5374 books were provided in Castilian, 423 in Valencian and 368 in English, together with 2,703 DVDs and 68 CDs. The town invested 27,000€ last year, acquiring further items for their collections in the library, and budgetary plans to continue this expansion have been made for 2016.

Common feet problems One of the most common reasons for a patient to request a consultation is the osteoarticular deformations of the forefoot, such as bunions and claw toes. The hallux valgus or bunions produce a deformity of the 1st toe diverting it to the side of the foot and making it appear as a bulging bone on the inner part of the foot. This deformity cannot only cause pain when wearing shoes or walking, in many cases it does not produce pain but as it advances it causes further deformities in the adjoining toes such as claw toes and also in the bones on the soles of the feet producing pain and resulting in an unaesthetic appearance. In order to treat these deformities of the forefoot, we use MIS surgical techniques (Minimal Invasive Surgery), which resolve these deformities with local anesthetic and sedation allowing the patient to have a rapid incorporation to their daily life. These surgical interventions are carried out through incisions which oscillate between 1 and 5 mm and are characterized as presenting a post operatory pain which is minimal or null and allows the patient to leave the operating theatre on their feet. The trauma caused on the foot is much less than that caused by a traditional surgery. The MIS surgery of the foot provokes other advantages as it does not need the implantation of screws or fixed needles to hold the bone after the surgery. A tourniquet is not used to cut the circulation of the foot during the operation making it much safer for the patients with blood circulation problems and presenting less post operatory risk of thrombosis. The MIS surgery is not only used for bunion and claw toe surgery we can also benefit from its advantages in other pathologies of the foot such as the calcaneal spur which causes pain in the heel or the metatarsalgia (pain in the sole of the foot). The callosities which appear on the toes or the sole of the foot are caused by deformities of the bone, in a way that the MIS surgery can correct these affected bones and definitively avoid the reappearance of the callosities. This Minimal Invasive Surgery is carried out in the operating theatres of HCB, where we have all the technical and human resources to carry out the surgery safely and efficiently.

The Make A Smile team at last year’s fair
by JEANETTE RICE
THE SECOND annual Spring Fair is being held in the gardens of the Los Arcos Restaurant at Pedregeur in aid of charity Make A Smile. The event promises to be a real family day out – there is even a children’s party with Sudge and Fudge from Funshine Faces on Saturday 9th April as
well as a treasure hunt with Winnie the Pooh handing out prizes. And between noon and 4pm, there will be over 40 gift stalls, 12 charity stalls, and a separate ‘rastro’ area, to enjoy as well as fashion shows and live entertainment; and radio station Total FM will be broadcasting live. There is also a barbeque offering home-
made burgers, sausages and chilli – and vegetarian options – as well as a bar. All profits will be donated to Make A Smile, which supports children living in EMAUS homes and also runs a self-sufficient farm project. For more information email kidskitchen@outlook.es or got to the Facebook page Spring Fair for Make A smile.
The special charity event was organised by Sandra Reeves and raised a total of 500€ for Javea-based animal charity APASA. The audience on both nights appreciated the appearances of Tina Turner, Amy Winehouse, Ken Dodd, Dean Martin, Kenny Rogers, Tom Jones, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Cliff Richard, Tammy Winette, Madonna, and Liza Minelli. Attie & Lee Grant, the proprietors of The Druid’s Cave, said:”It was a sell out show and everyone was absolutely fantastic. People were talking about it for days afterwards. “The performers gave a lot of their free time practicing, organising costumes, and doing the show, it was truly a great effort for a really good cause.” The money raised will buy 50 heavy duty water buckets for the dogs at the APASA shelter, as well as bags of treats for the animals.

BUSY REHEARSING songs for a new season, the Valley Voices choir has a new look for 2016 – with pianist Gordon Lightfoot retiring and ‘chief organiser’ Joan Stock King taking a back seat. Joan, with Jennie Tollan, started the group over three years ago and Gordon – together with his wife and musical director Aileen – were also founder members. And while Joan will continue as one of the singers in the 25-strong choir, 87-year-old Gordon has decided the time has come to sit back and take life a little easier with a well deserved rest. As a musician, Gordon was said to be “constructive” with his comments and exercise a “dry sense of humour”.
From a Salvation Army background, he went on to become principal cornet player with the Luton band and played at the Albert Hall at a Festival of Britain concert in 1951. An engineer and keen sportsman, Gordon took early retirement at 50 to become a mature student and pass a degree in music at the Colchester Institute, playing trumpet with the Essex Symphony Orchestra for many years. Anyone interested in joining the Valley Voices can join the group at rehearsals at the Bar L’Assut in Jalon between 4pm and 6pm on Monday afternoons – or call Jennie on 96 558 1519, or Aileen on 696 514 613, for more information.
Donations home and away
TEULADA MORAIRA Lions Club has “topped up” its Food Voucher Scheme for local families with a 1,500€ donation, while giving a further 3,000€ to help restore people’s sight worldwide. Eight years ago as the financial crisis bit deep locally, the club launched the voucher scheme in the Teulada-Moraira area. Administered by the council’s social services department, it is still needed and in operation. Club members went to Teulada Town Hall to present Mayor Carlos Linares – who is an honorary Lion – with the donation. Only weeks earlier, Lions were in neighbouring Benitachell to give 1,500€ for a similar and independent food voucher scheme helping the community. And while much of the money raised by the Lions is used to fund charitable projects and community work locally, the club is part of an international service organisation, Lions International. Since 1990, it has run ‘sight first’, a global initiative for the prevention and cure of avoidable blindness – to date helping more than 30 million people. Teulada Moraira Lions, as part of its international commitment, recently gave 3,000€ to back the cause.
There were 161 members – including 8 new faces – at the Casa de Cultura in Alfaz del Pi to hear President Elaine Mitchell outline what the association had achieved in the last 12 months. And following official business, 27 members gathered at the Hogar del Pensionista in Alfaz to enjoy lunch together (pictured). U3A Marina Baixa holds its general meetings on the fourth Monday of each month in the Casa de Cultura, Alfaz. However, because of Easter, the next Meeting will be on Monday 21st March, starting at 11.00 am. New members are always welcomed. For more information, visit the website www.u3amarinabaixa.com or the Facebook page. Alternatively, call Secretary Joan Flint on 96 586 1226 or 663 637 167.

PENNY LANE
TOP BEATLES tribute ‘The Liverpool Band’ raised over 1,000€ for charity with a concert at La Senieta in Moraira earlier this month. Peter Johnson, owner of Magnum Productions PA, and organiser Colin Lilley are pictured at Teulada Town Hall presenting a cheque for 650€ to the Association of Alzheimer Families (AFA), which has a centre in the town. Mayor Carlos Linares and AFA President Pepe Buiges both said it was “amazing” that local residents and charitable organizations made such an effort to help the community.
News from afar The brides wore white

IT WAS a nice day for a mass white wedding in South Korea last weekend as 3,000 couples from 62 countries tied the knot in a ceremony conducted by the Unification Church.
Another 12,000 brides and grooms got to say ‘I do’ in the ceremony thanks to the power of the internet during the three hour ceremony in Gapyeong, 75km north east of the country’s capital Seoul. The controversial Unification Church was founded in 1954 by the late Reverend Sun Myung Moon – his followers are frequently referred to as ‘Moonies’ – who died in 2012 aged 92. He had presided over mass weddings since the sixties and his widow Hak Ja Han Moon officiated last Saturday when some 22,000 church followers and guests gathered at the Cheong Shim Peace World Centre, the church’s headquarters. The couples were identically dressed and included 1,000 marrying for the first time; together with 2,000 who were already hitched but seeking to re-dedicate their marriages and families to God as they had married before joining the church. Mrs Moon was said to have urged the Unification Church’s followers to complete its mission to “build heaven on earth” by 2020. However, despite the thousands taking part, earlier mass ceremonies have been simply gigantic in comparison. In 1997, 30,000 couples wed in Washington and two years later, 21,000 couples filled the Olympic Stadium in Seoul. Rev Moon has always been a controversial figure. He was once jailed in the United States for tax evasion and declared in 1992 that he and his wife were messiahs. And critics over the years have attacked his church; calling it a cult and accusing it of brainwashing its followers.
Pie fight
SHOPPERS IN a local Sainsbury’s stood aghast as a fight erupted over a £1 chicken pie. A mother received severe bruising to her arms and a split lip when she was attacked at her local Sainsbury’s store in Torquay Devon. Surprisingly, the fight was not over the last half price television, but a chicken and mushroom pie. Torquay police have begun an investigation following an
incident that took place at the town’s supermarket, where a woman was wrestled to the ground and had her hair pulled by the attackers, before other shoppers intervened. Polly-Victoria Turner, aged 21, said, “I thought I was going die. It took around six male shoppers to get the couple off me.” The couple, who pounced on Miss Turner, were shopping with their new-born baby, which they left unattended during and after the attack, before they returned to get their child. The argument started as Polly’s aunt reached for the reduced pie and the man told his partner to move out of the way. Polly said “my aunt stood back and told the couple it was fine, but they began verbally abusing her before turn-
ing on me.” Witnesses said that the scene was “exceptionally distressing” as other shoppers struggled to pull the woman off Polly. Miss Turner went on to say “as I was down on the ground I could hear the man shouting ‘have her babe’ and I could hear my daughter screaming.” The store confirmed that they were currently helping police with their enquiries following the attack, as police offices released a description of the couple. The woman was wearing wellington boots, a green coat, had long black hair and was pushing a pram. Her partner was wearing a farmer’s cap, jacket and jeans.

School Daze School and me did not get along & due to a peripatetic family life I went to several.

The roughest were in Woebegone Worthing. Names have been changed to protect the far from innocent,so let’s call them -The Norman Bates Primary, and Our Sacred Lady of Sociopaths C of E Secondary Modern (we had an in-house coroner). All I wanted was to be a cool hep cat at Santa Bellow High School. Where? It’s the setting for one of the worst, but most enjoyable films from the ‘50/60’s – High School Confidential. Where all the cool cats with flat top hair cuts, drive Chevy Belairs & make out with chicks that look like Sandra Dee. Me? I had a Raleigh bone shaker with, humiliatingly, a shopping basket on the front & no chickadee. They also had the mighty piano pumping Jerry Lee Lewis singing the title song live on campus on the back of a flatbed truck. All we got on speech day was Arthur Askey with a penny-whistle. For mere mortals, this guff about the Fast Fifties & Swinging Sixties was precisely that. Henry Kissinger was getting more amorous action (and even he got distracted carpet bombing Cambodia). The rest of us never got a scratch during the so called ‘sexual revolution’.For instance I was a virgin until 32 years of age – by choice - sadly, not mine. My only deep joy at school was football which I loved, but was useless. I could trap a ball further than most could kick one. However I always got selected, not due to being a leader of men, ‘twas because I caught sports master Mr Hornblower with student teacher Miss Golightly, how can I put this subtly? I can’t – BEHIND BIKESHEDS, WOO-HOO! Our most humiliating defeat was to St. Agnes High – they thrashed us 15-0 – in their street clothes. Hell’s Teeth! those girls were battle hardened. The most pointless lesson? Woodwork. We decimated an entire Equatorial rain forest to make an ink blotter or mug tree. Sting would not be best pleased. There was a picture of Señor Sumner in the National Geographic (a magazine I now view the same as Playboy – full of exotic places I’m never going to visit). Sting is pictured in an Amazonian jungle sporting a watch worth a Third World debt, while pontificating about the plight of the indigenous population & how it’s all our fault. Sting! Sell the watch, give them the money, the jobs a good ‘un, now please give it a rest – and you Bono.

IS YOUR loan linked to the change between EuroSwiss Franc, Euro-Yen, etc? MULTI-CURRENCY mortgages are apparently normal mortgage loans, but instead of operating in Euros, they are linked to other foreign currencies. Offered by banks normally to high income customers, as a formula to benefit from the changes between currencies, in practice it has caused to those affected enormous economic damage. This is because usually the evolution of the exchange rate between the Euro and the chosen currency has been unfavorable. These loans are usually linked to currencies like the Swiss franc, etc. Some of those affected do not even know that they are affected, as they are unaware that the capital of their loan is linked to another currency. Legally it is possible to claim against the bank, and request cancellation of the clauses relating to the linkage to foreign currency, since the bank did not inform consumers of the potential risks of these financial products. In addition, these loans are not referred to the normal interest, rather, like the Euribor which is the most common, instead they are normally referred to the Libor, which is an unusual and controversial interest rate. On many occasions not only are those affected paying higher than expected monthly repayments to the bank, but also, if the change of currency is unfavorable, often the consumer could owe now even more capital in Euros than that which was agreed at the beginning of the loan, despite having spent many years paying the mortgage. Many Spanish courts, including the Supreme Court in its judgment of June 2015, have pointed out that these types of loans are complex financial instruments, and therefore the bank is required to provide greater protection and information to non-expert consumers. Although these contracts are not in themselves illegal, the lack of sufficient and accurate information to consumers who contract them, outlining the potential
risks of the product, could mean that there is no real knowledge by consumers and therefore the consent given when signing is not valid, which could lead to a declaration of invalidity for lack of transparency. It is important that the affected are consumers, ie individuals or companies not acting in the exercise of their profession, trade or business. It is important to consider product knowledge, experience in similar investments, and training and qualifications of the affected.
And there are many judgments in favor of the consumers affected by these types of multi-currency loans, including among others, the judgment of the Provincial Court of Palma de Mallorca, Judgment 122/2011 of 5 April 2011. It is estimated that there could be anywhere between 30,000 and 60,000 such affected cases at this moment in Spain. If you have a mortgage in Spain linked to another currency (other than the €) contact us.

THAT IS the question concerning many expatriates at the moment
MONEY
30
WHAT A difference a few days can make to the whole issue , before Cameron went to the EU to try to negotiate with a group of people that dislike anything that could threaten their position (no matter how valid the argument) or anything that threaten the status quo, it looked like the IN vote had the upper hand.

Since returning and announcing the referendum on 23rd June , people he once considered good friends, allies and colleagues who he could count on for support have decided to join the OUT camp and now this is gaining momentum. There is a lot of scaremongering going on at the moment and even more unanswered questions on how a BREXIT will affect expatriates in Europe, of which some 800,000 currently live in Spain. Be it in relation to healthcare entitlements, pensions, employment or the basic question of will expatriates still have the automatic right to live within the EU. I am sure over the next few months this will become clearer to all. Is IN or OUT the right way to go, like everything in life everyone has their own opinions and only time will tell if the final decision was ultimately the right decision. If you want your voice heard and your opinion to matter, and have lived outside the UK for less than 15years, then you need to register to vote. Go to https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote . With all this uncertainty making the money and stock markets even more volatile, plus the Bank of England and the ECB talking of cutting interest rates further or even making them negative, now is the time to make sure your financial affairs are in order, working for you in the best possible way and that they are in the right place for you no matter what life throws at you. Advance moves reports on UK housing mini boom
Friday, February 26 - Thursday, March 32016
The surge in demand for their removals services has been put down to a number of factors that have all resulted in a very busy period for Advance Moves in what is traditionally a quieter time of year for the removals industry, during January to March. The prime influence appears to be the British Chancellor’s increase in stamp duty on buy-tolet homes, thatwill come into effect in April, and has therefore resulted in a rush to buy before the new higher levels of stamp duty apply. With more properties suddenly being sold in the UK, combined with the terrible weather conditions that the UK has experienced this winter, many UK residents are selling up and contacting Advance moves to undertake their relocation to Spain at their earliest convenience. Many of Advance moves clients are making the most of the free of charge storage period they offer, so that they know that their effects are safe and secure whilst they wait to complete on their new home. Advance Moves has also been investing heavily in their new mobile-friendly website, that offers a quick quote facility, so a client can enter minimal information to obtain a quotation for their
removal. The new site, at www.advancemoves. com, has been well received by the publicas it offers a lot of information on the removals process and why it is so important to choose the right remover for an international removal. The UK housing market mini boom has also had a positive effect on properties being sold in Spain, with more UK buyers entering Spain, with money in their pockets, and keen for a quick purchase. Once again, Advance moves has seen an increase
in clients moving from Spain to the UK. This is also partially due to the associations that Advance moves has with many of Spain’s best performing estate agents, so that a client can sell their property and organise their removal with minimal delay. Advance moves are looking forward to a busy year, as the current increased activity in the housing market will have a snowball effect, for the rest of the year, for Spain’s number one UK/Spain mover.
Feature
ADVANCE MOVES International Removals have reported on a 2016 first quarter mini boom in the UK housing market that has resulted in a significant increase in their UK to Spain Removals services.

The evolution of a waterless garden
THOSE WHO have read ‘Living Well from Our Garden Mediterranean Style’ will know that my garden in Spain developed through several phases over the past 28 years. INITIALLY THE intention was a garden only planted up with wild and naturalised plants which required little watering for it was a holiday home for six years and there were no local garden centres. The only source of purchased plants being the nursery run by the council of the local town who had a few spares to sell to the public if one had a Spanish contact. With rain from the eves of the house to water the only beds with subtropical plants and more rain than now before the coastline was concreted over I managed without an irrigation system. Then when I started to write weekly and monthly columns in 1998 and books from 2001 I needed to change our strategy in order to test out new plants and design ideas. In this period there was an amazing growth in the number of garden centres and the range of plants and chemical garden care products they had on sale but unfortunately in more and more of the plants on offer were not native to Spain and came from the climatic conditions in sub-tropical countries or northern European hot houses. Naturally to include support and advice to expats and
Spaniards investing in these new imports in chapters in my books and in weekly and monthly columns we expanded our plantings and installed an irrigation system to enable me to take off for international walking holidays. I, like many, experimented with sub tropical flowering plants fruits and vegetables for interest, experience and something new to write about. Then the very heavy frosts of 2004 and 2005 and loss of many of the more delicate plants made me reverse my own investments and concentrate on preserving some of the original Spanish plants in my semi formal garden. The benefits being that I used less water, had less pest problems - not that I had many before, more plants could be propagated from seeds and cuttings, less young and mature plants were lost, the irrigation system could be done away with, and I spent less time maintaining the garden especially during recent years when the garden has had to survive long periods of drought. Fortunately the little rain that did fall was not immediately lost by evaporation. Rather the rainfall was usefully collected in rain butts from guttering, fell from the roof into subtropical planted south facing beds mulched with a deep layer of stone
chippings and sizeable rocks some 28 years ago, was absorbed by deeply improved and mulched soils including the TerraCottem gel wisely used at the bottom of planting holes, ran from desert areas of the garden to planted areas along carefully contoured paths, and was prevented from running out of the plot through gateways or over terrace walls by ensuring that the entire garden was surrounded by walls. With such precautions in place and the strategic choice and planting of plants that develop deep roots the garden has now survived many summer without a watering system and the practice of walking the garden every few days to watch out for plants showing signs of stress and then only giving water deeply not shallowly, when I thought that the plant had been persuaded to deepen the depth of its moisture and nutrient seeking roots. It was such practical experiments and experiences that led to the writing of the book ‘HOW TO USE LESS WATER IN YOUR GARDEN- A practical guide to waterwise Mediterranean stryle gardening worldwide’ which is conveniently available from The Book Depository, Amazon Books and other internet book shops.

Lastest update from windows 10 Dear Aunty Virus, My wife’s Acer Aspire E1572G since the latest update from win 10 has ceased to function in that the keyboard just will not type AT FIRST she could not even log on but now at least she can get that far but no further. Therefore cannot even begin to find a cure. Any advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks for your anticipated assistance one again. Colin Reply: A bit of a tricky one when the keyboard will not function. The only way I can think of it to connect an external USB keyboard and see if that allows you to access the PC. It sounds like the drivers for the keyboard have not been installed or loaded up, which once you are in the system, you should be able to track down the correct drivers from the Acer website.
A very simple task HI AUNTY Very simple task but do not know how to do it How to move an icon from the task bar to the main screen? Many thanks Ray Reply: To move an icon from the task bar to the desktop, you simply click on the icon you want to move and drag it to the desktop.

Life Coach
WITH A background in family and matrimonial mediation, Life Coach Sara Bell helps Readers with their daily worries. If you are having difficulties with relationships, family, work or any other aspect of your life, then help is at hand.
She’s a Shopaholic My wife has emotional problems. She felt un-loved by her parents, who sent her to boarding school while they worked away. Her parents are no longer alive. My wife is very negative about things, and turns to shopping constantly to make her feel better. She is happy for a short time afterwards, and then is down in the dumps again. I have told her I think she has a problem. It’s costing us a fortune. I have suggested Therapy, but she says talking about it, won’t change her past. Therapy won’t change what’s gone on in your wife’s past, but talking about it will help her to accept what happened. In time she will feel better, and will be able to move on. She obviously feels she was let down by her parents, and this is understandable. The compulsion to shop continually is her way of comforting herself, but if not addressed, it can become an addiction. You can’t fix the inside, with the outside. She would greatly benefit by seeing a Therapist, and your GP can help with this.
Worried about getting old I am 15, and I am afraid of getting old. Everyone says how pretty I am, and I have been told that I could be a model. However, there is only a short time that I can do this type of work before I am too old. I look at members of my family who are growing old and ageing. I don’t want that to happen to me. It’s all I can think about. I am afraid there is no alternative to growing older and ageing. We have to accept that this is what happens to us all. Keep in mind that a lot of unfortunate people die young, and don’t even get the chance to have an interesting life and grow old. You are lucky, you are young and healthy and have your whole life ahead of you, so make the most of it, and try and feel grateful. A career in modelling would be wonderful. Not many young girls get the opportunity. Have some fun, and don’t dwell on the things you cannot change. Write to Sara in confidence. A pseudonym will be used if you wish. Sara reads all letters and can give a personal reply. Email your question to agonyaunt@roundtownnews.com or Sara is available for private consultations, telephone 650 054 467.

If the hat fits...
AUTHOR BARBRA Dean’s book about the adventures of children wearing a magical multicoloured hat is now available in English and Spanish. by JACK TROUGHTON THE CHILDREN’S story ‘The Multicoloured Hat – El Sombrero Multicolor’ has one page in English and the facing page in Spanish; making a perfect story for youngsters and an invaluable learning tool for expats learning English. Barbra and husband Tony have lived in Spain for 10 years – and when going to Spanish lessons were advised to read children’s books in the language. “This proved to be very good, as the words are simplistic, but without English we had to use the dictionary a lot,” said Barbra. “This is what gave me the idea to publish the book in both languages. “It is perfect for adults learning Spanish, teachers do tell you to read children’s books and with the English on one page and Spanish on the facing page, it is easy to go backwards and forwards to help you understand the words.” Barbra, who lives with Tony in Quesdada, said at the back of the book there was colouring pages for youngsters – although grown-ups could sneak a bit of fun if they wanted to have a go. The translations into Spanish were done by Berlingua, a local school. Barbra, who is now writing her second book about the ongoing adventures of the hat, said the book had been available in English only for about a year from Amazon. “It is now available in both English and Spanish, through all Amazons worldwide.”
In the story, the multicoloured hat flies around in the wind and lands on children’s heads. When they wear it, the youngsters become more confident, overcome fears and have a feeling of well being. “There are different stories and a moral to each of the stories,” explained the writer, who based characters in the book on members of the family. Barbra herself has worn many hats in the UK. She was Assistant Fashion Editor for a popular magazine, a freelance journalist, worked in the world of PR and advertising writing copy, and was a film extra. Now retired, she was also a mature student and aged 55 got a BA honours degree at University.

Divine providence has caused a delay that greatly changes things around for you. With the best intentions in the World there will always be those who do not have your full interests at heart and though you need time to grasp the situation everything is happening for the very best. Blame the midweek sextile between inventive Mercury and safe Kora. Venus sextiles Saturn and it is the same old same old that stops you in your tracks this week. Designed to give you the chance to make amends, why should you? After all it was you who took time to organise things with a clear brief to share responsibilities; which is now such a thorn in the side for those who simply haven’t done their homework over this! The Mercury quincunx with Jupiter brings you a lucky streak, and one that you might like to take advantage of. Jupiter, Planet of luck and fortune, also governs change and this would be a time to check your timetable since there will be last minute cancellations, and maybe a let down. However every cloud has a silver lining, just wait and see. A moody time ahead as Moon energy slides into some Cosmic heights and you appear to be under the microscope. Your freedom is your most treasured gift since Cancerians are known to love to be free agents and this week sees you cutting ties that have held you back somewhat. Make no further plans unless they feel right for you! Just as the glorious Sun sets on an inquisitive Neptune, it is time to face a revision of your finances once again. Giving the benefit of the doubt to those who are the major offenders it is time to set a budget, and to adhere to it. Money comes and goes, but you have to find a way to make it work positively for the sake of everyone who is concerned. Indecisive actions may have cost you greatly, but true love always will find a way. As Mercury calls time on Kora now would be the best time to spill the beans and tell it like it is. Give and take are the basis of any relationship and things will be better when they are not merely being swept under the carpet. Love will always find its way, so now... let it be! As Venus sextiles Uranus at the start of the week, and goes on to sextile Saturn midweek, it would be right in saying that you are playing your cards very close to your chest, for reasons only really known to yourself. Holding back on anything doesn’t necessarily make it special, and that is exactly what you have to do right now to keep the peace. The Mercury sextile of Uranus brings in unwanted and unwarranted energies just when things were getting established. A friendship is passing onto shaky ground because you are obsessed in listening to the conjecture of others without knowing the truth, and what it reveals. Leave any decisions right now, until the end of the week, at least. Jupiter is involved with actions with both Mercury, ensuring communications are open and vital, and Venus, bringing some salient light on the heartfelt energies you are provoking. You may find it hard to keep a balance but you do have to be sure that what you get is exactly what you want this time, and is not a compromise in any way! A nail biting finish proves that you were right all along. However it is too late to make amends and to do anything more except to try for necessary closure. If you knew then what you know now things would be very much different, but since you have been implicated you have to rise to the occasion and show everyone what you are made of. Your trusty planetary leader, Uranus is concerned with turning around some of the traumas of late. You seem to have come to terms with things in your own inimitable way, but the hurt is still there and you won’t forget things in a hurry. Venus enters into your heart midweek and it is a good time right now for some rest and resolve to ground you. Neptune basks in the conjunction with the Sun, who in turn looks to Ceres to bring some routine back into your life. You are burning the candle at both ends, and if something has to go it cannot be you, you are too precious to lose, but fragile enough to break. Whatever will be will be but please think of yourself in the equation and do the maths!
If It’s Your Birthday This Week
Check out how others see you right now. You may have come a long way but your next port of call is to put down some roots and take a stab at your innermost dreams and desires!

PERIODICALLY I
write about my work in restoring the balance in the many haunted homes of the World.
It is work that I have always taken on as the challenge that it is, and it always presents me with both solving and resolving of the expulsion of entities; which I have to say are very much on the increase. I have written the great truth that the dead do not live well amongst us, the living; but just now and then it is my work to do something about the hangers on that greyly inhabit with no right to do so. Each entity has it’s own personality and, indeed, it’s own expertise for that matter. There are ghosts who have little or no instincts, and the undead who do not seem to know that they have died and that the next stage is to move on up. Ghouls and ghosties have lost their souls somewhat when they should be concerned with making a connection that would take them to the happy hunting ground of the lost souls in transit to the Spirit World. Slowly all the dead find their way onwards to a better place where they belong. The undead try to communicate with their surroundings, often the way that they did when they were fully alive. In so doing they bring about cold spots in our homes and send the odd shiver down our spines in this process. Cats will stare at them because the great majority of noble felines have second sight, and Dogs may bark at a wall because they feel someone is there, and they are the household protective force. If your animal is having to protect you then they are picking up on something that just should not be there, and it is high time to take control. Ghosts maybe no longer clank chains, but then anything is possible and all phenomena of any kind begs to be investigated fully. Poltergeists are to be found in homes where there are children living, especially if there are teenagers around. People say that the influence of the poltergeist is brought about by the disturbing balance of that transit experienced when boy is about to become a young man and girl becomes a woman. This transitory period is literally sheer bliss for the soulless poltergeist. The moody energy of teenagers is hypnotic to them and they then go on to commit acts that bring attention to the entire family, for one reason or another. Most poltergeists only move on when there is a better offer, and they are hard to dislodge. They like to break things and love to shatter light bulbs with a strange combination of both connective and destructive force that channels energy into minor but noticeable breakages. If you feel that you are not alone in your home and you need to remove any unwanted guests the very first stage is to go in with kindness and suggest that there is a better place for them. Remember that you, the resident in charge, are the best person to do this, and try to eliminate any fear. If entities pick up on such fear they can use it as fuel to dig themselves into the fabric of the home even more. Better for you to go in gently and be determined, changing to showing anger but again determination, if you really have to. The undead can scare but they do not harm usually. Your home will feel better without them undoubtedly, and a set of prescribed rules will banish them successfully. I do admit to carrying a small cross and some holy water in my work bag, just in case; and I am not afraid to tell those unwanted banshees that for them it is best that they go into the light on their own accord, for their own sake. Some will move on and some won’t; however, assistance is available, and force can and will be used as a last resort!

KENNY, I missed saying goodbye to my Father by just a few minutes. I know that he will make his way to the Spirit World, but will he ever forgive me for not being there when he really needed me? Asle.B Asle, I doubt that your Father has any intention in forgiving you, because you didn’t do anything wrong! The deathbed doesn’t have to be final; and when the time came to take his last breath your Father will have been in the arms of the Angels, knowing that you, his loving son, was on his way. Personally I have found that many dying people like to just close their eyes and drift off into a deep sleep. You can only remember your Father alive now...and that’s a great plus I assure you!

A night to remember Helping find a new look at Hepburns HELP OF Denia and the Marina Alta presents a Fashion Show on Friday 18th March and present ways of going “from ‘seconds’ to fabulous”.
by Caroline Tyszka
HEPBURNS BAR, in Albir, which is well known for its generosity with charity donations, held a very successful event on Monday evening. Rick Moorhouse, former X Factor contestant and singer, entertained the excited guests for the evening, even doing a duet with the previous bar owner, Christine Bailey. Surprise performances came from Lord Ian Bennet, who is a radio presenter on Overseas FM, as he had the audience in tears of laughter with his Elvis and Freddy Mercury
impersonations, as Rick was singing. Local celebrity “happy days” Graham Boland, who has been seen recently on the “Bargain Loving Brits in the Sun” programme, popped along, with friends from the Villamar campsite, to help the evening go with a swing. Winnie, owner of Hepburns bar, said, “we had an overwhelming amount of support and danced until our feet could take no more.” The evening itself raised 543€, with a further 600€ euros from other collections, all going to the bar’s grant-a wish-charity, El Preventorio children’s home in Gandía.
The event takes place at the HELP Activity Centre, Avenida Oeste 29, La Xara. Doors open at 12.30pm and the show begins at 1pm. All the clothes and accessories being modelled are taken from the charity’s two shops in La Xara and Moraira – and are available to buy on the day. Tickets are 5€, including a welcome drink, canapé, and a lucky number draw on the day. Booking is essential as places are limited and reservations can be made by calling 661 224 134; alternatively tickets can be bought at the HELP charity Shops in La Xara and Moraira.
Easter Fair date for your diary FEBRUARY IS almost over and what better way to look forward to March than plan a visit with the Easter Bunny. Katie Dell, who organised a Christmas Fair at the Sun Palace Hotel in Albir in December last year, has organised an Easter Fair to be held on 20th March 2016 at the same venue. The Christmas Fair was so popular, with over 2,000 people attending, that the March event will see an expansion over two floors at the hotel, as well as using the outdoor terraces. Katie said: “we will have nearly 100 stalls this time and a mermaid display in the hotel’s outdoor swimming pool, as well as princesses greeting the little ones.” Stalls will include a tombola, hog roast, bouncy castles, face painting, crafts, and beauty. Children will be able to have their photo taken with the Easter bunny, and receive an Easter egg. If anyone requires further information regarding the event they can contact Katie on the Facebook page www.facebook. com/events/936641346417717.

Giving4Giving’s exciting New Year THE GIVING4GIVING charity is having a very busy time with an anniversary sale, sponsored dog walk and new shop to fit out. Since opening its doors in July 2012, volunteers at Giving4giving charity have raised well over 42,000€ to help and support local cancer charities and other worthy causes up and down the Costa Blanca, through sales at the charity shop and various fund- raising events. As a growing charity, Gary, the charity co-ordinator, is delighted to announce that an additional charity shop is to be opened in mid-March this year in Finestrat. Situated in the heart of the village, not only will the new shop help to provide additional income for the charity, but, hopefully, it will also benefit by becoming part of the local community and raising awareness of the vital work and people it supports. Gary said “Donations are urgently needed to fill the empty shop, ready for the grand opening in March – clothing, footwear, bric à brac, electrical goods, household linen, furniture, coat hangers etc.” Meanwhile, to celebrate the 1st anniversary of their Altea shop, there is

VANESSA HUDGENS played Gabriella Montezher in High School Musical, but now concentrates mostly on acting. Vanessa and her new boyfriend Austin Butler went to Arizona Park last week and decided to etch their names into a rock formation in the picturesque Sedona area. Vanessa shared with her 15.7 million Instagram followers “Austin + Vanessa” captioned “Happy Valentine’s Day boo boo bears,” so sweeeet! What’s not so sweet is that they had their collar felt for “damaging natural surfaces or property of the United States,” and could get a $5,000 fine and/or 6 months in jail. Idiots!
ITS ELECTION year in America and come November we´ll know who´s the new president. I have to confess to being extremely concerned that Donald Trump might get the job, and I fancy Barack Obama might well be thinking similarly. The polls have got bad haircut man well in front but Barack garnered a great deal of attention when he said “life in the White House is not ´a reality show´ and I continue to believe that Mr. Trump will not be president, and the reason is because I have a lot of faith in the American people!” Good finish B O!
IT SEEMED like the whole world came out in praise of Lady Ga Ga´s Bowie tribute at the Grammy´s, but there was one notable exception. Duncan Jones, son of David, watched her performance then shared with his 277,000 followers the dictionary definition of the word ‘gaga. “Overexcited or irrational, typically as a result of infatuation or excessive enthusiasm mentally confused … damn it! what IS that word!” which all adds up to Duncan not liking what he saw and heard. It’s certainly a fully loaded criticism, but being the son gives him the right.
THE SIMPSONS have hit the headlines again, as on Sunday May 15th, across all US time zones, 3 minutes of a Simpsons show will go live, yes indeedie, LIVE! and no I´m not writing this on the way to the funny farm. “Homer will comment on current events, as well as answering viewers’ questions” said show runner Al Jean. He explained “we´ll use a form of motion capture technology to feature Homer moving and talking about things which he could only be saying live on that day.” ´THE VIEW´ is an America TV show that began in 1997, is Viewers are the fourth-longest-running national daytime talk show in invited to history, and won an Emmy in 2003. The format is that an send in alternating panel of female co-hosts discuss a variety their quesof social and political issues, and Whoopi Goldberg is tions. Not one of those hosts ... well, at the time of writing, that really was certainly the case. There´s a right old hula-baLIVE loo currently going on at ABC offices, and Whoopi then!
Whoopi’s doin’ a whole lot a ‘Whoopin’ and ‘a Whoppin!!
MATT LEBLANC sent out a clear message “Don’t believe the hype!” relating to the former Friends actor denying The Mirror story that he´d had a nervous breakdown. “Hey, to clarify, I never had a nervous breakdown nor did I do an interview with The Mirror in the UK. So don’t believe the hype. But thanks,” said Joey, I mean Matt. On the upside Matt is flying high on the back of copresenting on Top Gear saying “I knew Top Gear was a big show, but, WOW, I was on the front page of the New York Times!” He´ll always be Joey to me.
is whooping things up good and proper, and it’s got pretty super-gossipy as to why she´s behaving this way. Page Six magazines says she´s rattling her cage because she wants to get the sack from her $5 million a year job serving as the lead host on the show … and why would she do that I wonder! She’s daring them to fire her” said Page Six “so she can go off and do other things, particularly after her ‘slave’ outburst. She knows if they fire her they’d have to honour her contract meaning she’d be paid $5 million for doing nothing.” Interesting! Now let me explain the ´slave ´outburst. Again Page Six takes centre-stage saying “last year Whoopi walked around the ABC Office saying, “I’s a work for ABC, who is my master. I’s a slave to ABC. It’s ‘12 Years a Whoopi’ at ABC,” a reference of course to the film “12 Years a Slave,” and the magazine saw this as ´goading´ behaviour ... yes it is, but funny too! However, there´s one more twist in the tale. Whoopi is in the final year of her contract and according to an insider if she wants to renew at the end of the season, “it would be for significantly less money!” So my good people … it’s your call. Is she about to fall, or is she about to be pushed?
MADONNA TRIPPED up at last year’s Brits and Leonardo got a dirty look from Lady Ga Ga at last month’s Saga Awards, and here´s a couple of oddities from the BAFTA´s. Stephen Fry calling costume designer Jenny Beavan a ´bag lady´ went viral after which he cancelled his Twitter account saying “Will all you sanctimonious f*ckers f*ck the f*ck off, Jenny Beavan is a friend, joshing is legitimate. Christ I want to leave the planet.” Ahem. The other odd tale was Julie Walters losing a diamond earring and saying “it was probably worth more than my home.” Aahh Blesss.

Benidorm auditions success AUDITIONS WERE held last week, for anyone wishing to be an “extra” on the popular ITV series, Benidorm.
Josh, Kate and Zara
by CAROLINE TYSZKA BEFORE THE previous new series (8) had finished airing on ITV, preparations were being made for series 9 to start next month, with auditions being held at the Benidorm Melia Hotel last Friday. Although the morning audition session was not due to open until 10am, keen residents began queueing at 9am, with their paperwork in hand,, all hopeful that they would receive the call to work on set. Pere Agullo, of “Filming Spain”, the production company used by Tiger Aspects who commissions the programme, was in attendance to ensure that everything ran smoothly and that people did not have to queue too long.
RTN caught up with one group of expats waiting to be seen. Josh, Kate and Zara were very excited about the prospects of becoming a “Benidorm extra”, even though the three of them work for MedPlaya as entertainment staff. They said “we would love to feature in the programme and, with our performance skills, we are hoping to be chosen.” A steady flow of people arrived at the hotel throughout the two audition sessions and, by the end of the day, almost 350 had been processed, with a further 200 previous extras confirming their availability to Javier Alonso, extras coordinator, via email. Series 9 will see the return of directors David Sant and Robin Sheppard. David, who directed series 6-8, also directed
episodes for Stella and Jonathan Creek, whilst Robin directed series 8 of Benidorm, and also several episodes of The Bill and At home with the Braithwaites. Filming in 2015 for the current series used approximately 2,200 extra placings, who could be seen at the many special locations, in addition to the Solana hotel and pool and the Neptune’s bar. This Monday saw the last episode of series 8, with “The Pride of Benidorm Awards” at the Solana, and sleazy compère, Sammy Valentino, causing trouble. Jodi’s acting career got a boost and Blow & Go anxiously awaited a new stylist. The highlight of the evening was the formidable CEO Crystal Hennessy-Vass (Joan Collins) who was back with a very special performance.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin

It’s never too late to learn
“Nunca es tarde para aprender”. It’s never too late to learn. This is something I find myself saying to people in one way or another almost every day. On a similar subject I was reading in a Spanish magazine the other day about women over fifty who had turned their lives around. The stories were quite inspiring. Luckily for me, and this article, they were also full of past tenses. Here are a few quotes from one lady called Menchu: “Me casé a los 22 años y dejé de trabajar”. (I got married at 22 and stopped working). “Estaba contenta dedicándome a mi familia” (I was happy dedicating myself to my family). “Cuando mis hijos crecieron, una amiga me propuso trabajar con ella. El cambio me gustó y me puse a hacer cursos como una loca”. (When my children grew up a friend suggested that I worked with her. I liked the change and I started doing courses like crazy). “Nunca pensé que era mayor para buscar empleo” (I never thought I was (too) old to look for work) “Una de las cosas que me aporta el trabajo es que rejuvenece” (one of the things that work does is rejuvenate) Here are the words of another lady, Maite, who started studying at 59: “Me enteré hace siete años de que existía la Universidad de
I’ve decided to let you translate this one, but here’s some help. “Enterarse” means “to find out”. Another expression I rather like is “estar como un flan” (to be like a flan). This doesn’t mean those round sponge things we eat, but a Spanish flan which wobbles about. Now you’re imagining a lady with lots of wobbly bits, but it actually means “shaking like a jelly”. Let’s get back to the point. This short extract illustrates the Spanish past tenses wonderfully, as it contains a sequence of events (she found out, she was curious, she
said nothing, she sat an exam, she was accepted, she felt satisfied). Contrasted with these are two descriptions using the past continuous tense – she was (had been) 40 years without taking an exam, and she was shaking like a jelly. Here is the final statement in Maite’s story: “Si tienes la cabeza ocupada, no te estancas. Y es una forma estupenda de llegar a la madurez”. (If your mind is occupied you don’t stagnate. It is a marvellous way to reach your mature years). This takes me back nicely to the first point of this article – “nunca es tarde para aprender”. Reading Spanish magazines is good too. This one was called “Mujer Hoy” (but is also good for men!) I liked it except for its lead story which told me that Sarah Jessica Parker considers herself a victim of fashion.
1,100€ for Alzheimers, and a cruise for Joyce EVERYONE’S A winner when it comes to charity nights at Restaurante El Alto La Dolores, in Guardamar. The latest fund-raising night was sold out 3 weeks before the event. Woody provided the entertainment, and was excellent, as always, so, by popular demand, he has been booked for the next charity night on 23rd March. All funds raised on this night will go to The Children’s Care Home in Elche. At the recent charity night, 1,100E was raised for the Alzheimers Association, and once again, the restaurant owners donated a Mediterranean Cruise as 1st prize in the raffle. The lucky winner was Joyce Miles, from Dona Pepa, Quesada. Tickets for 23rd March are available from the restaurant itself, or from The Card Place in Benimar, or Redz Cafe Bar in Quesada. Early booking is recommended, as these nights always sell out early.

New builds and renewable energy (Part 2)
Last week we were looking at the limitations imposed by the new regulation coming into force from the 13th of March of this year. This regulation imposed a limit on the energy that homes must use, (for example on the East Coast of Spain Alicante Murcia, Almeria etc) and a limit has been established in 40Kwh/m2 per year. I have mentioned the Coast because the percentage of energy allowed for each household will depend on its locality, obviously, a home on the high mountains of Burgos with temperatures in winter that may fall to -10Cº will require more energy than a home in Torrevieja. The colder the zone the more energy you are allowed to consume. Spain has been divided into different climatic zones and a limited number of Kwh/m2 is provided to each home, values that range from the 40Kwh/m2 per year for “α” (More climatically benign zone such as Canary Islands and Cadiz) zones, to 70Kwh/m2 per year for the climatic zone “E” situated in north Spain. In its application to buildings of new construction the new HE 2013 regulation establishes for the first time a limitation of energy consumption for buildings of new construction and for any home extension of existing buildings, and for that uses this non-renewable primary energy consumption indicator. The limitation to the energy consumption of the building includes the consumption of non-renewable primary energy necessary to satisfy the energy demands of heating and cool-
ing, hot water, ventilation and, in the case of non-residential buildings mechanical equipment, to also include lighting. How will we architects make this regulation work? To be able to comply with the requirement of consumption we may use a variety of technical systems and renewable energy sources, which no doubt will provide us a great flexibility. This flexibility must be compatible, however, with the fact that our building is, first of all, energy efficient. It is for this reason that the HE 2013 regulation maintains the global indicator of energy demand of the building, which is representative of its energy needs and the thermal comfort that the building is able to provide to its users. The new regulation HE 2013 advances in this regard with greater emphasis on limiting the energy demand, making more explicit the requirement and setting more stringent limit values. In residential new construction private buildings or extensions of existing buildings limitations are established both for the energy demand for cooling and heating. The demand for heating is limited depending on the climatic zone of winter to a value that ranges from the 15 Kwh/m2 per year for α climate zones, A and B to the 40 Kwh/m2 per year of the climatic zone E, to which a corrective factor is applied that takes into account the area of the building. The limit of the cooling demand is fixed depending on the climatic summer zone to a 15 Kwhm2 per year for zones 1, 2 and 3 and 20 Kwhm2 per year for zone 4.
Interventions in existing buildings The policy of energy efficiency of buildings, of which the technical building code is a fundamental instrument for its implementation, says that the minimum energy efficiency requirements determined for buildings and their elements must be established in order to achieve “optimal levels of profitability for the user”. The conditions of interventions in existing buildings (type of construction, orientation, etc.) are much more limiting than in new buildings (or obviously in their extensions) and, as a result, optimal profitability levels differ considerably between both cases. Therefore, the update regulations have established regulatory requirements for interventions in existing buildings with respect to those established for new buildings. Given its great social importance of rehabilitation of existing buildings, the updated CTE takes into account the rehabilitation of exiting built homes to demand that this be carried out in a manner consistent with the existing technical possibilities and social needs. The general criteria set out in the CTE joined the energy efficiency criteria for intervention in existing buildings established in the new regulation applicable to interventions in existing buildings depend on the extent of the intervention, so the new regulation will need to applied to existing buildings if works affect more than 25% of the shell of the building or those in which the main use of the building is modified.

Bacon and Egg Salad with Oil and Balsamic Dressing For years I turned my nose up at the thought of warm salads, and then I went to France. The French are so creative when combining warm meat and fish in salads and I was soon converted. Ideally you need thick cuts of bacon (I used cured pork loin in this version) but ordinary sliced bacon would do just as well. You could try adding a few bits of spicy sausage such as Chorizo or even pieces of black pudding such as Spanish Morcilla if you like that kind of thing. 400g thick cut bacon, sliced into strips. 4 fresh eggs. Mixed salad leaves. Salt and freshly ground black pepper. For the dressing 4-5 tbls extra virgin olive oil. 2 tbls balsamic vinegar.
1. Fry the sliced bacon over moderate heat until well browned. 2. Meanwhile bring a large pan of water to the boil and drop in the eggs to poach them for 2-3 minutes. 3. Place a handful of salad leaves in the centre of four large serving plates and, when the bacon and eggs are ready, throw the bacon over the salad. 4. Quickly return the frying pan to the heat and add the olive oil and balsamic vinegar, leaving them to warm through while you place a poached egg on top of each salad. 5. Stir the dressing, scraping up any bits from the bottom of the pan and drizzle this over the salads. Season the eggs with a little salt and pepper and serve immediately. Serves 4 Preparation time: 10 minutes. Cooking time: 10-15 minutes.

THE LA NUCIA institute theatre group held a show last Friday, to raise funds for two local charities.
The Auditorium show was such a success that the sign saying “no tickets” had to be posted, to avoid people turning up and being disappointed. The two charities to benefit from the performance are the AECC (Spanish Association Against Cancer) and the Protective Association of Animals in La Nucia.

Choir’s late Christmas
BUSY MEMBERS of the U3A Vall del Pop Casual Choir have finally got together for a ‘Christmas Do’ and enjoyed a cracker of a party at Delaney’s in Jalon. Turkey and traditional trimmings were abandoned given the time of year, but everyone tucked into the food served by their hosts at the restaurant. After the meal, the choir enjoyed a sing-a-long of a number of well-known Beatles numbers – the Fab Four’s songs are being practiced for a number of planned charity concerts. New members are always welcome. Anyone who is not a member of U3A can go to one of the general meetings in the Polivalent, Murla, on the first Thursday of the month and join for 5€ a year – group activities, including the choir, can be found on website www.u3avalldepop.com.
THE SUCCESSFUL St Valentine’s Barn Dance at the San Josep Church was the perfect opportunity to say farewell to organiser Father Steve Foster and his wife Ruth. The event was attended by nearly 50 supporters of the Costa Blanca Anglican Chaplaincy and check shirts and jeans were the dress code as Father Steve called the sets and gave dancers the opportunity to get the hang of the steps. Half time gave everyone time to catch their breath and enjoy a tasty ploughman’s supper during an evening that raised more than 600€ for charity. Father Steve and Ruth are retiring from the Chaplaincy next month and are returning to Yorkshire for a well earned rest. Details of the Costa Blanca Anglican Chaplaincy – the Church of England in Spain – including its work and services can be found at www.costablanca-anglicanchaplaincy.org.

Successful breastfeeding As a both a midwife and a mother who has successfully breastfed, I am forever promoting breastfeeding. In this article, instead of me ‘waving the flag’ I am passing on the task to one of my patients who one year on is still enjoying successful breastfeeding!... I had so many questions and doubts about breastfeeding. I was confused with all the literature for and against breastfeeding. Questions like “how would I know if is she was getting enough or too much milk, would my milk be rich enough, would it hurt, would she latch on ok, would I be embarrassed to feed her in public etc”? I really wanted to try and breastfeed her, to try and give her the best start in life I could. I think the key to success in my case was being prepared and been given all the information and help I needed. I found that help in a wonderful lady who was my midwife at the time (Dawn). She answered ALL my questions and gave me more information that I didn’t even know about, most of all she was there anytime I needed help or advice before and after the birth. Too many women, I feel, may have given up because of poor or wrong advice. My mum gave me good basic advice but she was mindful of the up to date advice from Dawn. When my daughter was born I felt so relaxed about breastfeeding and I knew what to do and what to expect. It just felt so natural. Even after she was born Dawn still helped me when I needed help or advice and we worked out how to change and adapt things so it was better for me and my daughter, as in working out different positions which definitely made it easier and more enjoyable to fed her. I love breastfeeding. It’s our special time together and we have a great bond through breastfeeding and I’m so happy that I know I’m giving her the best nutrition and diet she could ever have. We travel a lot, it is SO convenient! It also doesn’t cost anything to breastfeed and its ready in an instant. (no getting up at 3am to make up bottles!) Throughout her paediatric checks she has shown to be well above the average score, and I do believe that my milk has helped in that. My daughter is just over a year now and I still breastfeed, she loves her milk and breastfeeding. For successful breastfeeding you must get as much information and help as possible and relax and enjoy it. Its a wonderful experience. Carol. Donors keep on giving
RESIDENTS IN La Nucia attended a blood donor session last week and again showed their commitment for helping others.
Of the 47 people who attended, 40 were eligible to give blood at the transfusion centre in the town, which has had increasing numbers since before Christmas. Requirements to donate are that you must be over 18 and under 65 years old, with a weight of more than 50 kilos. Men can donate up to four times a year and women 3 times a year. life&leisure #road test
Tim Saunders Independent unbiased car reviewer
Urban crossover THAT’S WHAT Peugeot calls its 2008; a five-door estate that sits high off the road like a 4x4 but without the uneconomical, permanent all-wheel drive. However, it’s fitted with a grip control that features modes for mud, sand, snow and normal everyday driving, making it more agile than a standard car (watch the video at testdrives.biz).
This function provides much needed traction to the front wheels when required. It can also be cancelled at speeds of up to 30mph, giving the driver ultimate control. I’m testing a 1.6 e-HDi Allure model, which is basically the mid-range offering. Standard features include 16” alloy wheels; power folding chrome door mirrors; rear parking aid; dark-tinted rear windows; stainless steel front and rear scuff plates; cruise control; speed limiter; all round electric windows and air conditioning. Parkers, the used car experts says: “Skid plates front and rear supplement more aggressively-styled alloy wheels, either in 16 or 17-inch sizes, sitting beneath squared-off wheel arches. A kink in the roof above the rear door evokes memories of an early Land Rover Discovery, though it embellishes the space with chrome rather than glass. It’s a material used throughout the car’s exterior. That familiar, and slightly fussy, Peugeot family face is adorned with a bold grille outlined in the shiny metal, as are the roof rails, door bottoms and wing mirrors. It makes for a rather glitzy ambience to what could otherwise
be considered a slightly derivative design statement.” Over the course of our time together we head into the New Forest, Hampshire and on into Dorset and Wiltshire, which provides ideal terrain for testing its abilities. The concept is simple: Peugeot has created a more robust estate car that embraces the challenges that the modern family will throw at it - a family like the Saunders clan, which decides to take a few days out and have a well-earned rest at Sandy Balls, the self-catering holiday park in the New Forest. That means loading everything into the car but the kitchen sink. And although the boot is not large enough to accommodate our tandem pram, it does tackle the smaller single pushchair; a reasonably-sized suitcase and of course eldest daughter Harriett’s Trunki. Fortunately, a Farad roofbox from www.roofcarriers.co.uk provides extra storage space, making for a more comfortable journey. Otherwise everything else would have to go inside.
With comfortable leather trimmed seats and smatterings of metal trim throughout, the 2008 Allure feels well put together, if a little minimal in its interior design. FACTS AT A GLANCE: New price range: 20,395€ 0-60mph: 12.8secs Top speed: 113mph Economy: 78.5mpg (extra urban) For more information about roof boxes visit: www.roofcarriers.co.uk Watch the video at www.testdrives.biz

U3A writers’ success
by CAROLINE TYSZKA
MORAIRA-TEULADA U3A’s creative writing group’s members, Vonnie Giles and Hilary Coombes, have just had books published. A selection of Vonnie’s unique and quirky short stories have now been published under the title ‘Acid Rain’, which, according to the book’s cover, ‘delves into her eclectic collection of dark and esoteric tales and promises to entertain and surprise’. Hilary, who specialised in teaching blind students, now lives between Somerset and Spain with her husband. Having previous written non-fiction (boring, she says), Hilary joined the group a couple of years ago, seeking advice about a novel she had embarked upon. This
has now been published and is entitled ‘The Hen Party’, and deals with Bern, in her fifties and organising a hen party in Benidorm, who must deal with the consequences when one of her companions reveals a secret that has repercussions for everyone. She finds herself in a Spanish police cell and is forced to confront her deeply buried feelings, her past, and face up to the way that she is living her life. Both books have been published as eBooks and paperbacks on Amazon, but booksellers should be able to obtain them. References are ‘Acid Rain’ ISBN-10: 1908135069 and ISBN-13: 978-1908135063, and ‘The Hen Party’ Paperback ISBN number 978-1-908135-40-7 and eBook ISBN number 978-1-908135-41-4.
Valley deflowered RECORD HIGH temperatures and strong winds left people taking part in Jalon Valley HELP’s annual Almond Blossom Walk playing a game of spot the flowers.
The Spanish weather service has confirmed that January was the warmest since records began and thanks to early warm temperature and high winds, when the walk began last Sunday, the beautiful ‘clouds’ of white and pink blossom was missing. The event was suddenly ‘Spot the Blossom Walk’. However, thanks to the sunshine, everyone taking part still enjoyed the outing and 70€ raised will help fund the charity’s much-needed community work. One of the organisers told RTN: “Hunting the blossom put a whole new twist on the occasion!” HELP’s next fundraising event is the annual Charity Auction at El Cid in Benidoleig on Friday 11th March. The sale starts at 1pm and items to go under the hammer can be viewed from noon.

Alfaz Fantasy Football League by patricia thompson
EIGHT 5TH round F.A Cup ties including Premier League teams gave the A.F.F.L. 20 goals,5 clean sheets, only 12 yellow cards and 2 red ones. No change at the top or bottom of the A.F.F.L. means Joe’s team, Keith Lard F.C, still have a 38 point lead over Scott’s Dogdale. Paul’s Elite Kitchens, Swinton and Dazza’s The Pheonix Club remain in 3rd and 4th place, while Lyn’s Handbrake City are still at the bottom. In the Mark Carter Ladies Section, Hup Hannah City have a 5 point lead over Maxine’s Plaistow13hammers, followed by Karen’s Ceasar’s Blackcats, who have slipped down one place. Tracey’s Flyers lead the chase for the 20€ voucher, sponsored by QUICKSAVE Supermarket in Albir. Nathan’s team, Tyrannosuarez-Rex F.C., have just a 5 point lead over Harley’s Ginger Ninjar, while, at the bottom, Bradley’s team, Hero to Zero, are only 5 points behind Lily’s Sponge Bob. With no change at the top or bottom of the Leonard Knowles
Pego Golf Society
Construction Golden Boot League, Jukeboxers lead Pearson’s Smashers by 20 points. At the foot of the table, Lyn’s Handbrake City & Anne’s team Bolton Wanderers are a long way behind the rest. 3 more teams go into the monthly Premier Imports draw for a case of cava, the highest scoring team, Let’s get Hammered, and the 2 lowest scoring teams, Jimmy’s Nick’s Blues and Lyndy Lou’s Boys, both with minus 6. Manager of the Month for February is sponsored by Mark & Mike at Paneil’s Restaurant in Benidorm Old Town who provide excellent 2 and 3 course menus at reasonable prices. With only one week to go, Tracey’s Flyers are now 9 points ahead of Keith Lard F.C. When Skies are Grey have won this week’s Breakfast for 2 at Rafters, sponsored by Kate, after leaping up 43 places to number 128 in the league. Rugby La Vila News
Sucina Golf Society, at Las Colinas 35 PLAYERS and guests played an Individual Stableford format, with a Team Game prize.
by PATRICIA THOMPSON
LAST SATURDAY the first team travelled to Barcelona to play against Hospitalet, and won. 45-7. Tries were from Nacho Muller, Ivan Agudo, Juan Ignacio Pérez, Bruno Villalba, Luciano Martínez and Lucas Poggi. La Vila stay at the top of the table, and the play offs are fast approaching. The second team had another convincing home win against Alicante University first team. 41-10. They also stay top of the table, in the Regional 2 League. Next season, they are hoping to play at Regional 1 level. Next Saturday 27th February, there will be a friendly sevens home game at 4.30pm against the Kazakhstan men’s Olympic team, and, at 5.30 pm, they will be showing, on TV, the VI Nations England Ireland game. The next first team home game will be on Sunday 6th March at 12.30pm, against Les Abelles Valencia, the only team to have beaten
them this year. Tickets will be 5€ for adults and free for under12s. Tickets are now available at www.instanticket.es at the same price. As usual, the Argentinian barbecue will be available; a large hot roll for 4€. If you want to join in the after-match meal with the players, paella and a drink for 5€, book your ticket at the bar. The shop will be open on Sunday, selling the new Rugby La Vila hoodie for 25€. On 2nd March The Russian women’s national team will return to the club for their second leg training camp, until 26th March. They have been playing in Sao Paulo Brazil, in the World Sevens Series, where they finished 9th. After Villajoyosa, they wil travel to Langford, Canada and the USA to take part in the next Wolrd Sevens Series. Meanwhile. the Kazakhstan, men’s and women’s sevens teams will be at Villajoyosa, preparing for the Olympic Qualifiers. The Ka-
zajistan women’s team still has the option to qualify, as they were only beaten by Japan’s women’s team. The 30th International Benidorm Sevens competition will be held on 28th and 29th May when top teams will be preparing for the next Olympic Sevens Qualifiers. La Vila Rugby Club is situated at Carretera El Pantano, Villajoyosa. Just take the motorway AP-7 exit 66 (Villajoyosa). At the first roundabout head for the mountain. It is about 1 km from the Motorway exit 66. Alternatively, take the Villajoyosa by-pass, and take the middle exit, at the first roundabout bear right towards the motorway entrance and at the second roundabout bear left towards the mountain. If you are interested in joining La Vila contact Jason Craig on 659 67 47 68 or Ignacio Davila 608 06 82 08 or email oficina@rugbylavila.net.
The day was cold and blustery and the winds created putting problems for most players, with low scores recorded. Buggies automatically stop at least 50 metres from the greens and walking up and down steep slopes to get back to the buggies seemed to hinder the pace of play. However, most players enjoyed the course and hope for better weather on their next visit. The winners were, Div 1, Roger Major, 37pts, Div 2, Wayne Harris, 32pts and Div 3, Ian D White (on c/back), 30pts. 5 NTP’s went to hole 5, Malcolm Smith, hole 7, George Rowe, hole 10, Dave Hurst, hole 14, Phil Robinson and hole 17, Jim Hayes. The winning team was Ian White, Wayne Harris, Jim Hayes and Roger Locker. The society’s next outing is on Tuesday 15th March at Hacienda de Alamo.
