Property headache for Minister by Jack Troughton

Spain’s Sunday best

Rosey Sach

SMARTLY DRESSED youngsters across Spain have proudly paraded to church over recent Sundays to take their first Holy Communion. Continued on page 5.

ANGRY EXPATS have demanded that Minister for Europe David Lidington take action in the increasingly bitter backlash over the Spanish government’s property road show. The first batch of 1,145 signatures to an open letter has already landed on the minister’s desk at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. The MP is urged to intervene as Spanish Development Minister Jose Blanco tours Europe heading up a sales drive to sell property in the sun and reduce the glut of unsold property built during the boom years. However, touting Spain as a safe investment has enraged expats across the

country that have fallen victim to the country’s property pitfalls despite buying in good faith – the notorious land grab laws, illegally built homes, and the retrospective Law of the Costas. Mr Blanco was in London in May encouraging buyers to return to the Spanish market and is expected back in the UK later this month. And the European Court of Justice successfully fanned the flames of controversy in a recent technical ruling over public contracts under Valencia’s land laws –Spanish politicians heralding it as an endorsement of the legislation. New era dawns with JFK by Jack Troughton JOSE CHULVI, the Mayor of Javea, was sworn into office pledging his government team would serve residents with “humility, enthusiasm, work and honesty” in a new era for the famous and historic resort. The socialist – his PSOE party won six seats in last month’s elections – announced with allies from Xabia Democratica and Ciudadanos por Javea they had reached “political agreement” to reflect the will of the majority. As the new 21 member council took its seats, Mr Chulvi said he was deeply honoured and aware of the responsibility of the challenge of his position, not least in reviving the recession-hit local economy to provide jobs and wealth. He paid tribute to the knowledge and security provided by his team. “Because as Kennedy said ‘the most intelligent thing I have done I my life has been to surround myself with people more intelligent than I am’.” Saturday saw similar ceremonies across the country following the local elections on 22nd May. Javea witnessed a real dogfight for power with nine parties competing for votes. And while PSOE won the largest amount of seats – bucking the national trend – it had no overall majority and careful negotiations were needed to form a working government. SUPPORT Mr Chulvi praised the generosity of the two Nueva Javea councillors for their “unconditional gesture of support” and said he looked to build bridges “based on dialogue and mutual trust” with the Partido Popular and Bloc-Centristes. He said Javea was known for its natural wealth of the landscape and environment and it must be nurtured and valued, along with its historic and cultural heritage. But the mayor said perhaps the most important was its people – a melting pot of some 90 different nationalities – and the talents of the whole community must be harnessed and its voice heard. Referring to the recent protests across Spain, he said: “We are in a period when many new uncertainties concern our society; there are citizens who demonstrate in the squares and streets because they feel they are not involved in political life, who wish to voice their opinions and publically express their preferences and requirements for individual and collective improvements.

Mayor Jose Chulvi

“For us as democratic politicians, it is our task to listen, discuss, and evaluate the criticisms and opinions, and from this perspective improve democracy.” DIALOGUE He added: “In this new era it will be important to speak clearly, without over-simplification or empty rhetoric. Local politics also means a permanent attitude of listening and dialogue, always opting for the more human side of politics. “The only way we can successfully achieve any action that we propose is by listening to the people – because behind every square, every street, every door, is a reality that is being experienced at first hand.” Mr Chulvi said the leadership must use core values of firmness, rigour and conviction and acting in the public interest “In other words, for the common good.” He said the challenges ahead would need the council to make the right decisions and promised to work “listening to everyone, standing in the street, together with the people, sharing the problems of the people.” And he concluded every councillor must shoulder the responsibility of the task ahead. “Javea deserves it and Javea deserves that we be up to the task and I will do my best to achieve it.”

17 - 23 june 2011 Continued from front page Ruth Genda, one of the organisers of the petition, said it was still open and appealed for expats to encourage others – including MPs and MEPs – to sign. “Of major concern is the fact that neither the Spanish nor the UK governments appear to be aware of the scale and size of the problems we have encountered whether buying or selling,” she said. She said the first batch of signatures had been sent to Mr Lidington to give him time to “digest” the stand being made by victims “so that he can confront his counterpart ministers and officials in Spain and seriously challenge them before any further property promotions shows take place.” Ruth said the UK Government, through the minister, must take notice of concerns and take action. “He needs to know that now is not the time to be promoting Spanish property, but it is the time for Spain to clean up its act so that property can be bought and sold without fear or favour.” The letter to Mr Lidington reminds the politician of two reports approved by the European

Parliament over the last six years highlighting the “horrific” problems of purchasing property in Spain – particularly in Valencia, Andalucia, Murcia and Almeria. Written by MEPs Michael Cashman and Marcin Libicki in 2006 and Marget Auken and David Hammerstein in 2009, they presented a list of abuses of human rights over property and prompted numerous politicians to highlight “the scandalous practices which appear to be perfectly acceptable to the Spanish government.” The letter appeals: “Mr Lidington: the Spanish minister Sr. Blanco needs to be confronted. You are the man to do it. We elected you to do it.” And the petitioners call for the road show to be halted until monies to be returned under the Spanish Bank Guarantee scheme – drawn up to combat corruption and protect ‘off-plan’ investors– and a backlog of legal cases are heard by the Spanish courts. A family nightmare by Jan Gamm A JAVEA family face an agonising wait as their son, 19-yearold Jamie faces sentencing on charges of armed robbery and attempted murder. Jamie is one of three boys arrested last year following an incident where a 62-year-old woman was beaten about the head with a baseball bat as she slept. The boys took marijuana plants and cash from her home. Stan and Helen Smith have been in Spain for 13 years with their two children, Jamie and Jodie, integrating into the Spanish school system straight away, attending primary school and later the Institute in Javea Port. Stan and Helen both worked; Stan as a technical engineer and Helen as a chef. Until their son was arrested in 2009, the couple had no experience whatever of dealing with the police as their family had never been in trouble before. Jamie’s arrest rocked his parents’ world and changed their lives in Spain forever. Both Stan and Helen firmly believe their son was in no way responsible for the violence perpetrated on the unfortunate victim during the robbery that took place in Javea in February 2009. Speaking exclusively to RTN, Stan said, “Jamie is simply not violent. In fact he is quite squeamish. He was there, certainly.

And he did play a part in the robbery. But there is no way Jamie hit that lady.” MISTAKES “A number of errors have appeared in the press surrounding the facts of the case, including the myth that the boys changed their shoes to conceal their crime and that the baseball bat used as a weapon was wrapped with duct tape,” said Stan. “We just wanted to clear up some of the facts.” The couple believe their son is accused of violence perpetrated by one of the minors embroiled in the case who cannot be named, whom we shall call Carl. 16-year-old Carl has been the subject of countless denuncias for alleged violent behaviour in a short but prolific career as a conman and thief; a young thug well known to the local police. A complicated investigation followed his arrest full of what Stan and Helen believe to be false trails laid by Carl to make Jamie, as the only ‘adult’ member of the party, ‘do the time’. The two minors were allegedly sentenced to five years in young offenders’ institutes, one in Germany and the other in Spain. Jamie, however, has been in the ‘18-25’ section of Villena Prison for 18 months awaiting trial and sentencing but he

hasn’t been wasting his time. He is half way through a builders’ apprenticeship and is taking a series of exams to qualify in a trade he has discovered he loves. He has been a popular and exemplary prisoner and says he is being treated well. This week Jamie will learn whether he is to serve five years for a robbery he fully admits to, or up to 14 years for an act of violence he swears he had absolutely no part in. Jamie’s sister Jodie will be celebrating her 18th birthday next week and looking forward to the usual cards and gifts but says, “All I really want is to have Jamie home again where he belongs.”

The phenomenon of the Red Moon

The Red Moon

By Jan Gamm THE LONGEST lunar eclipse in more than a decade turned the moon blood red on Wednesday evening, allowing stargazers around the World a rare visual treat. The moon became a reddish, coppery-colour, tinged by light from the Sun. The terrestrial shadow started to fall at 17.24 GMT and lifted around 23.00 GMT: the ‘total’ eclipse – with the lunar face completely covered, lasted 100 minutes - the longest since July 2000. While some astronomers around the World had to contend with dense cloud cover and rain, in Spain the view was crystal clear; many enthusiasts enjoying the spectacle on their local beach with a bottle of celebratory red.

Spain’s Sunday best by continued from front page By Jack Troughton People in villages, towns and cities come outside into the street to applaud the children – the boys in sailor suits, the girls in long frocks – as they walk to their local church. Parents are also dressed in their finest, posing for official photographs at the start of the parade, making final adjustments to children’s clothing, and following in the wake of their offspring headed for the church door, backed by the musicians of the town band. Historically an important coming of age ceremony in the Catholic Church, it is very much an event to be celebrated by family and friends. In Benitachell, 14 children took their first communion at the beautiful Iglesia de Santa Maria, all classmates in the village school and excited by both the pomp and circumstance – and the after church party and traditional presents. For three British families the communion

also marked their integration into village life and being part of the local community. And eight-year-old Rosey Sach’s parents Darren and Sarah invited old friends the Troughtons to the family occasion, your correspondent armed with a camera to record the occasion. Such is the importance of the milestone, Spanish grandparents are said to start saving for the big day from the birth of a grandchild, shops are full of communion presents, restaurants are booked years in advance - and one local restaurant reported it was already fully booked with families wanting to celebrate the prestigious event until 2018. Sarah told RTN that Rosey – the youngest in her class - had been attending Communion lessons over the last 18 months with teachers from the church and village priest Don David – insuring the children take on board the significance of what they were undertaking. Dress rehearsals for the service had also taken place in church, all the children read to the congregation, sing, and towards the end

of the ceremony present their mum with a white rose. SCHOOL “Rosey and her friends were getting very excited about it as the day approached and it has been the talk of the school gates for weeks,” she said. “We certainly felt we had to keep up because the Spanish do it in such a big way. “And my concern was making sure Rosey looked the part because some families spend a fortune on the dresses and suits.” She admitted there were butterflies on

VOTED THE best yet, the annual Moraira Music Festival went down a storm on Sunday night with more than 4,000 people enjoying an excellent night. Now in its eighth year, the crowd were treated to seven acts and the musicians enjoyed an enthusiastic response. Finishing 15 minutes ahead of the 1am Monday morning deadline, people were dancing in the street to the ultimate group The Rio Band and demanding the party continue.

Sunday morning before church. “But in the end it was all totally worthwhile. Everyone looked absolutely stunning and it was absolutely beautiful, a real community event. “Obviously the religious side is serious – and hopefully the children will remember it – but it was all done in such a good-hearted and jolly way,” said Sarah. “We really enjoyed the whole occasion, it felt really special – I have absolutely no regrets at all, it was such a lovely thing to do and for the children to experience and always remember.”

Another hit was Blues by Five (Resurrected) led by vocalist Lenny and bass player Rocking Ron. The band dates back to the sixties and with drummer Nigel reformed for a period in the nineties. Organiser Eric Taylor said: “It just gets better every year and there was a fantastic response with around 4,000 people turning up. “I asked Lenny if he would like to do the concert and he put Blues by Five back together for a one-off.” Eric thanked everyone who gave up their time to help and the Moors and Christians ‘Capitanias 2011’ for running the bar – which helps fund the festival.

Younger people the biggest Woman power risk group for skin cancer by Jan Gamm THE DIRECTOR of Skin Cancer Services at USP Hospital San Camilo, Miguel Sanchez Viera, has pointed out that skin cancer is most common in younger people between the ages

of 25 and 29 years. Speaking on Monday during celebrations for European Prevention of Skin Cancer Day, Sanchez Viera said that those aged between 15 and 24 years were the next most at risk, with an overwhelming increase in the incidence of cases over the last 30 years. And although Spain is not the country with the highest number of cases in the ‘most at risk’ group, it ranks amid countries with the second highest rate of prevalence; a situation that is unacceptable. Spain’s high risk status is put down to its high number of solar hours and also the sun sensitive skin type of the population. The main risk factor for skin cancer is ultraviolet radiation, from everyday exposure or voluntary direct sunlight or the use of sunbeds that utilise UVA for skin pigmentation. The World Health Organisation has slammed companies that rent out UVA booths, stating that such intense and high risk exposure to UVA is comparable to harmful substance abuse. SUNSCREEN

The sun can be harmful

In addition, a national survey carried out on sun protection reveals that 87% of the Spanish do not properly apply sunscreen. Dermatologists advise reapplication of the correct sunscreen every 2 to 3 hours and after swimming. Normally the sun protection factor (SPF) you need depends on skin type but broadly speaking a sunscreen with SPF50 is recommended for fair skin and for darker skin SPF30. With regard to regular checks, Sanchez Viera advises a visit to a dermatologist once a year and twice for more sensitive skin types, with frequent self-examination between visits.

Drugs bust in Denia forest OFFICERS OF the Guardia Civil have arrested a 23-year-old man in Denia last Friday on charges of drug trafficking. The man was spotted by the police driving into a rural road near a dense pine forest. The officers stopped and searched the man and discovered 41 grams of cocaine in a back-pack along with a precision scale, a mortar, and a log book of suspected customers.

Two of the vigilantes

by Jan Gamm EIGHT ‘HAVE a go’ heroines apprehended a thief in a municipal market in Novelda on Tuesday and successfully restrained the man until the police arrived. The incident happened opposite the main entrance of the food market. A 34year-old man of Romanian nationality, about 1.80m tall and strongly built, had allegedly stolen a dozen bottles of whisky, concealing the bottles in a backpack. The teller noticed the theft but the man ran out of the store and was found, some minutes later, hiding beneath a 4X4 vehicle. SURROUNDED An employee of the local deli pulled the man out from under the vehicle and

he was unceremoniously hauled back into the store where he was immediately surrounded by eight women, some employees and some customers, who refused to let him go until the police arrived. Faced with eight sternfaced women, the man obviously decided that dealing with the police might be less troublesome… “The truth is that women of character get used to standing up to people like that - living off the honest efforts of others,” said one lady, “In 16 years working in supermarkets I have been involved in many threatening situations with shoplifters and unfortunately, this is becoming more frequent. Being robbed is part of our work.”

Networking saves money by Jack Troughton THE PRICE of making calls with national supplier Telefonica will soar next month giving a real incentive for people to join RTN Network where it really does pay to talk. From 1st July, the telecommunications giant is hiking its connection fees for both national and international calls - the hidden cost of keeping in touch with friends and family. Connection charges levied by Telefonica will rise from 15 cents to 25 cents on an international call and from 12 cents to 15 cents on a national call. Cents soon mount up to euros on a bill. However, at RTN Network there are no connection charges, absolutely none. In fact customers are rewarded with 120 minutes of free calls to the

UK every month. Simple mathematics reveals a Telefonica subscriber will pay 37 cents making the first minute of a call to the UK. At RTN Network that same call could be absolutely free. And an ADSL package with RTN Network has an additional bonus. Not only can customers make use of superfast 3mb internet, they will also reap the reward of free national calls – and free television. Cheap and reliable communications are just a call away and friendly helpful staff will explain all the RTN Network options and give an easy step by step guide to making the change – they even do the hard bits! Tragic death on the tracks A 57-YEAR-OLD resident of Agres was killed on Monday when he was hit by a train on the Alcoy-Xativa line. The man continued to walk along the track despite warning horns sounded by nearby drivers. The train driver also sounded a series of horns and made every effort to stop but the man was killed instantly. Investigators are looking into the possibility that the man may have deliberately sought to commit suicide. The line remained out of action for two hours while emergency services attended the scene.

by Jack Troughton NOBEL PRIZE winner Prof Robert Edwards was knighted in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in recognition of his pioneering work as the ‘father of IVF’. Together with gynaecologist Patrick Steptoe – who died in 1988 – they developed the then controversial fertility treatment that led to the birth of the first test-tube baby, Louise Brown, in 1978. Now aged 65 and in failing health, Sir Robert was awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine last year – and colleagues believe recognition for the scientist’s work was long overdue. Together Edwards and Steptoe founded the world’s leading IVF clinic at Bourn Hall, outside Cambridge, and earlier this year the current medical director Thomas Mathews accepted an invitation from the Alicante-based fertility and gynaecology centre Instituto Bernabeu to pay tribute to the pair’s work and talk about the history and future of the now commonplace treatment.

The bells of St Mary ring out and out and out… THE CLOCK on the bell tower of Santa Maria in Alcoy struck midnight on Tuesday and did not stop! Residents attempting to sleep with their windows open in the newly arrived heat of summer experienced a constant ringing in their ears as attempts were made to urgently track down the local technician, who eventually managed to quieten the deafening racket. The clock was recently restored as part of preparations for local fiestas.

Almoradi couple narrowly escape as their home falls down by Jan Gamm A MAN and his wife in Almoradi narrowly escaped being crushed when their home collapsed on Tuesday. Their house had undergone a series of major reforms in the past five years, including the retiling of the roof. A large two inch concrete slab was installed to support roof tiles, now known to have been too heavy for the roof structure. The couple managed to escape with only seconds to spare and the woman sustained minor scratches and grazes caused

Iberia flight returns to Madrid to remove psychotic passenger AN IBERIA Madrid – Munich flight had to return to Barajas airport on Thursday last week after one of its passengers, apparently suffering a psychotic attack, began undressing and attacking the crew. The flight left Barajas at 9.15pm with 110 passengers bound for Munich but had to land again in Madrid at 10.30pm to evacuate the German passenger responsible: he had locked himself into one of the cabin bathrooms and had to be extracted by Guardia Civil officers before normal service could be resumed.

Germany holds up its hands: Spanish farmers to get help soon By Jan Gamm GERMANY HAS finally held up its hands and admitted this week that the outbreak of E-coli infection that caused the deaths of 30 people and made nearly 3,000 people seriously ill was sourced in Germany, despite its early accusations that Spain was the origin of the contamination. In the course of investigations carried out by Germany’s National Disease Control Centre to trace the source of the infection it emerged that locally grown bean sprouts were responsible, traced through forensic

examination of the contents of the family dustbins of some of the victims. “It is the sprouts,” said Reinhard Burger, head of the control centre, “…warnings against eating cucumbers, tomatoes and lettuces will be lifted but kept in place for bean sprouts.” Further tests will be carried out to determine the root of the infection and whether it is traceable to animal or vegetable contamination. Germany’s rash accusations during the early stages of the outbreak caused consumer panic resulting in devastating losses to the

agricultural industry across Europe. COMPENSATION Meanwhile, Spanish Minister of Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs Rosa Aguilar said that, “…ALL Spanish farmers will receive financial compensation soon.” Additionally, Spain is pressing for Germany to urgently restore Spain’s reputation in the agricultural industry by supporting its market role and also by allowing Spanish farmers a preferential place at all agricultural fairs to be held in Germany.

Holiday healthcare by Jack Troughton ADVICE ON the blue European Health Card and how to apply for one is just part of the information available at the British Consulate Open Day in Javea on 29th June. The road show team from the Alicante Consulate is return-

ing to the Marina Alta resort – a popular area for expats to make their Spanish homes – and giving a presentation on the services it can offer. And with the holiday season starting Brits will be told how to make sure they are properly covered for healthcare here in Spain and while on vacation. Laura Leeman, representing the Pension, Benefit and Healthcare team, will explain benefits are entitled to living here in Spain and how to insure expats are covered for healthcare here and holidaying within the EU. She will clarify exactly what the blue European Health Card covers and how to apply for one and Laura will also answer questions about pensions, and the rules surrounding the Winter Fuel Payment and other benefits. CITIZEN

Lloyd Millen

British Vice-Consul Lloyd Millen will explain what the Consulate can and cannot do to help British citizens and answer questions about living in Spain. He said: “Over the years, many British people have chosen Javea to live, making it a really important area for us on the Costa Blanca, which is why I am looking forward to going there again. “I hope as many people as possible attend this Open Day and take the opportunity to get their questions answered and find out what their entitlements are in terms of pensions, benefits and healthcare.” Space is limited so reserve a place by going to the website www.ukinspain.fco.gov.uk or for those without access to the Internet, call 91 714 6443. The Open Day on Wednesday 29th June is being staged at Javea Casa de Cultura, Placa de Baix 6, 03730 Javea. Doors open at 10.30am and the event starts at 11am.

Crew members from the guided-missile cruiser volunteered for the first community relations (COMREL) project of the ship’s 2011 deployment as it heads for the Middle East. A group of 30 sailors mixed and laid concrete and prepared and painted walls at homes sponsored by the EMAUS in Spain – an association that cares for and protects vulnerable children. And after downing tools at the end of the day, the sailors presented a plaque to mark the occasion to Montse Fiter, President of EMAUS, and to the Levante Council of the US Navy

League, which co-ordinated the visit and paid for the materials. The ship’s Chaplain Lt. Buster Williams said the volunteers enjoyed a meal with EMAUS and were able to get a lot accomplished during the day. And the cruiser’s commanding officer, Capt. Patrick O’Shea said he hoped the crew could take part in other COMREL projects during the Gettysberg’s deployment. The ship is joining the formidable George HW Bush Strike Group made up of Carrier Strike Group 2; USS George HW Bush; Carrier Air Wing 8; Destroyer Squadron 22; guided-missile cruiser USS Anzio; guided-missile destroyers USS Truxton and USS Mitscher; and the Spanish Navy frigate ESPS Almirante Juan de Borbon.

is this the end now?

ONCE AGAIN, the issue of Ryanair and airbridges has been given prominence in the RTN this week. The issue is quite simple, and can be broken down into two questions: 1. Is off tarmac boarding safe? Clearly, the answer is yes. This method of boarding is used by millions of passenger a year all over the world, and is accommodated by some of the largest airports in Europe. 2. Are people willing to forgo the convenience of air bridges in order to benefit from cheap flights? Again, the answer is yes, as demonstrated by the success of Ryanair. If any passengers want the benefit and convenience of using an air bridge, they are at liberty to use an alternative carrier. Is this now the end of this non-story? Andrew Bardsley

Put it down to experience MR. CHEESEMAN’S remarks about a decent restaurant in his area (Orihuela Costa), rings so many bells with me. When asked to recommend a restaurant in the area I simply refuse to do so, one reason being that one man’s meat is another’s poison, another being that there ain’t any - or finding that it has changed owners or chef overnight. My manta of “Let’s put it down to experience,” has cost me a small fortune since coming here some ten years ago. A write up in local newspapers is a joke and in no sense a guide, as they

all seemed so very pleased with their experience! They all like and prefer the mediocre - or large portions! The worst offenders are the Chinese establishments that are all so Anglisized with all having the same menu that going from one restaurant to another makes no difference whatsoever! One will never go hungry but finding a decent restaurant, from which I come away having had all my senses satisfied is still something on my wish list. W McHaffie

how upstanding of him! HAVE YOU noticed how people like J Johnson of Finestrat like to blame the ‘Tory bankers’ for all of Britain’s woes - he even tries to blame them for benefit fraud, which he condescendingly states he “dislikes” but suggests isn’t really a problem – it’s all “Conservative propaganda!” How upstanding of him! He goes on to claim that it’s “unjust” and “dishonest” to blame these claimants for the crisis, implying that they have no choice but to make fraudulent claims on the system. Does he seriously believe that the previous government’s thirteen years in power contributed nothing to the country’s woes? If so, the man is deluded. Ken Turner, La Marina, San Fulgencio (Alicante)

Deserted by ex-pats THIS LETTER, which I hope you will print, is for the attention of all those complacent expats that failed to vote in Benitachell on 22nd May. The P.I.D.E.B party fielded a strong reliable team, headed by the devoted campaigner Ms Connie Rheindorf. Not only has this committed lady been unjustly slandered and maligned, she was deserted by expats of all nations on Voting Day. Connie has worked tirelessly over the years for all nationalities including the Spanish, giving effort, time, financial help and even employment, desiring only to give expats a voice in the town.

Out of an Expat community of approximately 4,000, only a small proportion actually voted and without the support required to obtain crucial council seats the P.I.D.E.B. managed only one. By contrast the Spanish turned out in their hundreds. I say well done to them but shame on those expats who showed no inclination to be involved in very important local politics. When there is a future problem, those very same people will expect Connie to help but in opposition she will only be able to give advice. A loyal supporter…

Warning to all British ex-pat Pensioners MY HEALTH cover was cancelled by Newscastle in 2008. We moved to Spain in 2004. From that time my wife had operations for a new hip in 2006 and stents in her heart in 2010. When our interpreter checked with the hospital for a checkup on my wife’s heart, she was told that her S121 had been cancelled and I should get in touch with Newscastle asap. I phoned Newscastle on 16th May and they confirmed that not only my wife’s cover but mine also had been cancelled, both in 2008. I must say this came as a shock and caused stress my wife could well do without. Our clinic at Polop would not allow us an appointment or to see a doctor, and with ongoing problems from my wife’s hip operation she was in extreme pain. I was told by Newscastle that an S1 (replacing the old S121) had been sent 16th May for both of us. I got in touch with the British Consul in Alicante, where they were very good and sorted out the appointment problem for me. As from 6th June we are back on cover. Hope this is helpful to other ex-pats. Barry Charlton, Polop.

Accessing partners accounts in Spain REGARDING YOUR article about a gentleman who is worried about not having access to his wife’s account in Spain, there is a very simple way of dealing with this: He and his wife simply go into the branch where the account is held and ask to have his name added to the account, but with him only able to use the account with her consent, or in the event of her being disabled or dead. It does not cost anything and gives great piece of mind to all involved. My husband and I found out about this when I was seriously ill a few years ago, and our main account is in my name: just ask. Should Franco be left to rest in peace?

The Valley of the Fallen

by Jan Gamm THE DEBATE continues on whether the remains of the late General Franco should be disinterred and removed from the Valley of the Fallen to the burial place of his wife, Doña María del Carmen Polo y Martínez-Valdés. In the light of the impossible task of removing the remains of many thousands of republicans from the valley at the request of their surviving families, the Spanish government decided to instead consider transferring the remains of Franco himself. Franco is presently buried inside the church in the valley, his grave marked by a simple tombstone engraved with his name, on the choir side of the main altar. DECISION In a further development on Wednesday of this week it was pointed out by Pablo Linares, President of the Association for

the Defence of the Valley of the Fallen, that the decision to bury Franco in the Valley of the Fallen was that of King Juan Carlos, in an order signed on 22nd November 1975. Linares contends that Franco’s burial place was an “early decision” of Don Juan Carlos made before he was crowned and this decision should be respected and not overturned… prompting the response that in fact King Juan Carlos made the decision in consultation with the then prime minister, Carlos Navarro, and also with Franco’s family in an act that could hardly be described as ‘autonomous’. COURT The sensitive decision of whether Franco’s remains should be moved is one the government continues to consider carefully in order to avoid costly court action should the late dictator’s family decide to take action over any aspect of the matter being ‘mishandled’. Public opinion on the issue is predictably divided…

15-M finally de-camp at Puerta del Sol

Red Cross needs more food

15M, OTHERWISE called ‘Indignados’ or simply ‘Sol’ began a cheerful clean-up campaign with typical efficiency on Sunday 12th June with the aim of removing all traces of the large scale demonstration that rocked the country for weeks, leaving only a ‘point of information’ at Puerta del Sol in Madrid to indicate 15-M had ever been there. Most of the signs and banners that featured 15-M had been removed by the afternoon and the camp broke at midnight. However, around 1,000 Sol demonstrators brought the centre of Madrid to a standstill again in the early hours of Monday morning with a march toward the Plaza de Cibeles.

the Red Cross at work on wednesday

by Jan Gamm THE RED Cross, enlisting the help of shops and supermarkets to supply its food bank, has had to triple its support to supply the number of families it serves. Despite receiving food from the Spanish Agricultural Guar-

antee Fund (FEGA), the amount is not enough. The food program manager for the solidarity of the local assembly of the Red Cross, Maria José Mayor, explained that the number of the poorest families that the Red Cross supports has tripled with survival for families in dire situations made even more difficult by the economic crisis.

New walkway officially opened

Benidorm encouraging ‘The Good Life’

The new walkway

A NEW walkway in Postiguet, Alicante, was officially opened on Tuesday despite the facility being in use for some while. The opening ceremony was conducted by the Minister for Infrastructure, Mario Flores, in the absence of Mayor Sonia Castedo, accompanied by Councillor Oti Garcia Pertusa on behalf of the city council. The walkway cost 385,000€ and is made with low maintenance materials designed to repel salt and moisture. New street lights have been added to enhance the new structure.

Making a start

by Jan Gamm THE DEPARTMENT of Environment of the City of Benidorm has this week assigned available ‘gardening plots’ or ‘allotments’ to applicants in a popular programme costing 37,000€ to promote organic gardening. The first 45 successful applicants are all retirees and head of department Mariola Fluviá expressed her delight at the enthusiasm for the project, confirming that 50 more candidates have been placed on a waiting list for future gardens. “These are just the first,” she said, “…but the intention is to continue with them, especially taking into account the amount of interest the project has generated.”

SELECTION Priority for this first selection has been given to those prepared to devote the most time to their allotment but henceforth selection will be by lottery. Successful applicants are to be given a short two to three day course in organic farming techniques by municipal technicians and a starter kit of basic equipment with which to kick start ‘The Good Life’. The council requires that allotment holders do not use their plots for commercial gain and also abandonment of a plot for a period of more than three months is grounds for confiscation so the section may be allocated to a more deserving recipient.

Ted and the art of supermarket trolley maintenance Watts In Britain By

Paul Watts

DID YOU know, dear reader, that a ‘special task force’ has been formed by Preston Council? Oooh, sounds important eh? Do you know what this task force is for? You may well think, clean up the streets; tackle wanton crime, etc. No, guess again… It’s “to tackle the scourge of dumped supermarket trolleys blighting neighbourhoods...” Yup, this elite group has been formed to defend the good citizens from the disturbing scenes of dumped Co-op carts. According to a recent article in the Metro: “Not only will the ‘unsightly’ trolleys be rounded up quickly, Preston Council is to get ‘new powers’ to bill ‘offending stores’ at least £10 for the safe return of each shopping cart.” Now, in all that’s Big Society can you see what’s wrong here? Well, I missed it at first. Turning the Metro’s pages something nagged at me, so I turned back. And yes, there it was - that phrase ‘offending stores’. In our culture of blame and ‘yuman rights’, where the guilty get off on procedural technicalities and truth is dumped on the wayside, it now seems that retail stores are to be held responsible for the irresponsible actions of a minority of their customers. Are the lazy dullards that inconsiderately abandon shopping carts outside the car park or in the middle of parking lanes, causing inconvenience to the rest of us, now to be applauded? Is society to blame for their laziness, selfishness and complete lack of consideration? Probably. We’d better leave ’em alone in case they get all upset and need expensive counselling. So, Preston had decreed that the supermarkets are

the ‘offenders’. It is they that are in for punitive penalties merely for aiding their customers. The courtesy they provide, in the use of a shopping trolley could now cost them dearly. Is it me or have we lost it over here in La La Land? Why should the stores be punished for the actions of morons that take the carts out of the store’s boundaries? Is it the fault of supermarkets that yobs like to go chariot-racing around town centres on a Friday night or that some ill-bred lards take the carts home and then just dump them? Is it Tesco, Sainsbury, Farmfoods, Morrison’s or the Co-op that throw their own expensive items of equipment into the canal for a lark? Nah, I think not. Here’s an idea for Pratty Preston Council: form an elite squad to apprehend those that do and fine them instead - every little helps. Back in my distant yoof, when PC meant police constable and not politically correct (or come to that Preston Council) I was a management trainee (sounds grand eh? It really meant dogsbody) with the John Lewis Partnership at Waitrose. One’s training took in every department and facet of the Waitrose operation. And it was during my tenure in the ‘warehouse dept’ that I got to meet Ted the Trolley from Bracknell. Ted, complete with his treasure-trove transit van, would visit us every six months from Waitrose Central Command to maintain our fleet of shopping carts. His mission: “make ’em good again”. He was the fount of all trolleyiscular knowledge and could spot a dodgy bogie at fifty paces. His pet hate was folk that abused or ‘nicked’ his trolleys. “We’re workin’ on a

system that’ll stop the buggers taking trolleys home,” he grinned, “At the edge of the car park the wheels’ll jus’ lock up!” He proudly told me that already Waitrose was ‘rolling out’ carts fitted with coin-operated locks. “That’ll get the buggers to return me trolleys,” he chortled. It seemed anyone using HIS trolleys were potential ‘buggers’. The thing that surprised me was the sheer cost of a single supermarket shopping cart. Ted told me loftily, “These trolleys represent to the partnership an investment of seventy quid each.” Wow! Now, this was back in the days of kipper ties, flairs and very bad hair-dos; the Eagles had yet to release Hotel California and Punk was a good year off. So, if a supermarket trolley cost £70 in 1975, what the heck must they cost now? I would wager (because I cannot be bothered to do the research) a hell of a lot more. “You know,” said Ted, drawing deeply on his untipped Woodbine, “supermarkets dun ’av to provide trolleys or baskets – them’s jus a courtesy service.” Hmmm, perhaps supermarkets in Preston Council’s environs ought to withdraw that ‘courtesy service’. Imagine the shoppers staggering around the stores with cabbages and loo rolls teetering from their arms; it’d look like the Double or Drop competition from Crackerjack. The good folks of Preston would pretty soon be beating a path to the council and its elite squad! And I wonder what Ted would think of the council calling his trolleys ‘unsightly’? Not much, eh? Watts in Waitrose, wheeling back my trolley...

Gerard McGrath

by Patricia Thompson MANY RESIDENTS on the Costa Blanca have followed the progress of Javea boy Gerard McGrath who was seriously injured in a motor cycle accident 6 years ago. Fund raising on the Costa Blanca enabled him to take the Trip of Lifetime on the Jubilee Sailing Trust’s Tall Ship, The Lord Nelson, in Canary Islands last February. Since Gerard’s return he has been making steady progress and is now walking well and on occasions, without assistance. This is a fantastic achievement and dem-

onstrates his motivation to improve. The fundraising has enabled him to see a top specialist who confirms that he can recover normal speech with daily practice which would strengthen his muscles and respiratory system. We are looking for a volunteer in the Javea area who has some speech therapy experience to help Gerard during July and August. If you can help or know anyone who you think could assist Gerard please contact Tim Fawle: email timfawle@gmail.com or Gerard’s mother Jenny McGrath: Tel no 646 690 848.

Thank you to everyone ON BEHALF of the Help For Heroes Northern Costa Blanca Support Group I would like to thank all the people who helped to make the events we held a resounding success over the past four months. Thanks go to all those who gave so generously to the auction and to those who transported the items to El Cid, Benidoleig; the Fish and Chip quiz nights & Derek and Ann who ran them; the Raffle ticket sellers, Helen, Joan & Kay, squeezing money out of people when money is not easy to come by and to Peter and Avril for the Royal wedding Day Celebration. A thank you must also go to El Cid Bowls Club for their generous donation. Starting on 27th September we will begin a new season of fund raising for Help For Heroes with a grand 50s & 60s Rock & Roll Night at El Cid, with details to follow. Also race nights, Bingo, Fish and Chip Quiz Nights and anything else we can think of. Any suggestions? Email me at joanandkeithinspain@hotmail.co.uk

Magical miniature world by Jack Troughton TAKE A step back in time and visit a perfect Victorian street on May Day 1985 – all the work of the talented members of the Costa Blanca Dolls House and Miniatures Club. This little world includes a village green, complete with May Pole, and the heart of the community – a butcher, baker, blacksmith, grocer, book shop, and even a state of the 19th Century art photographic studio. And the models are on display at the Casa de Cultura, Pedregeur, from 30th June until the end of July. The club’s Chris Bell told RTN: “Our members have been working individually

on a project to create a street of shops from the Victorian era. Each member was given an empty wooden wine carrier box in December and has been working on their scenes ever since. “The shops have been researched so as to only include items that were available during the set period.” She added: “In most cases members have individually hand crafted many items within these shops using materials such as fimo and das clay as well as various woods.” The exhibition is open Monday to Fridays between 10am and 2pm and 5pm and 9pm, and on Saturdays and Sundays between 10.30am and 12.30pm.

Rotary Club of Altea helps Emaus with a grant

THE EMAUS children’s centre, which accommodates 11 children aged between 1 day and 6 years, has received a donation of 1,500€ from the Rotary Club of Altea. This went towards the badly needed reformation of one of the bathrooms for children with physical disabilities. The reform of the center has been finished in a period of 3 months and has been costly due to the fact that whilst the builders and equipment were on site, the children’s dining room was renovated at the same time. Once more The Rotary Club of Altea thought of Emaus when they held their concert in the Palau de Altea. Their members have continually shown their unselfish concern and devotion to the welfare of the most vulnerable of our society. For more information please visit www.emausong.es

British summer in Spain Margaret Hales welcomes guests

by Jack Troughton RAIN FAILED to stop play at a Marina Alta garden party featuring the Blaze Ensemble, a renowned classical wind quintet from the UK. Conservatives Abroad hosted the evening ‘Glyndebourne-style’ event in Javea attended by more than 80 people complete with summer fashions, picnics and candles. And when sharp showers intervened, true British spirit reigned and umbrellas saw off the damp. Margaret Hales, Chairman of Conservatives Abroad in Javea, welcomed guests who enjoyed a selection of music by composers such as Elgar, Sullivan, Walton and Zemlinsky, and a much applauded medley of traditional British folk songs. Margaret explained that Conservatives Abroad was 22 years old and still going strong and thanked guests for their support in rais-

ing funds for the party and appreciating the talents of Blaze Ensemble. VOTE She also announced the launch of the campaign to overturn the current legislation forbidding expats of a General Election vote after 15 years of leaving the UK. It is a multi-party fight to insure that Brits do not lose a voice in Parliament – in Spain; expats are denied access to more than local and European elections. Anyone interested in supporting the campaign can contact the secretary of Conservatives Abroad at margaretgeraldhales@gmail.com or visit www.vote-for-expat-Brits.com The social calendar for Conservatives Abroad now turns to 4th July and a Javea pool party and barbeque. In 2010, 80,000 spectators across 43 cities were treated to a performance of ‘Carmen’ and now in 2011 ‘Tosca’ reached 57 cities in 21 European countries. The production boasted a stellar interna-

tional cast led by Oksana Dyka, Jorge de León and Bryn Terfel, joined by the Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana and the Cor de la Generalitat Valenciana, under the baton of maestro Zubin Mehta. Considered one of the most dramatic Italian operas, Tosca contains some beautiful arias. Set in Rome in 1800 it is the story of Floria Tosca, a famous singer known for her voice and her vengeful jealousy. The painter Mario Cavaradossi is her lover and the Baron Scarpia the unscrupulous chief of police in Rome. The plot is full of intrigue, violence and passion. Regional Minister for Culture and Sport, Trinidad Miró, praised the growth of the Europe Viva Valencia project, which “…year after year includes more European cities.”

Las Aventuras de Sid en España Spanish lessons by

Jane Cronin

A weekly ‘cut out and keep’ feature helping you to learn basic Spanish for everyday needs

Part two

Last week Sid embarked upon the adventure of a lifetime by moving to Spain to live, after only having visited once before to buy his house. He finds himself a little overwhelmed by his first impres sions of the country. As he walked into the airport building it was all noise and con fusion, people shouting, greeting friends and jabbering in that un known language which Sid felt sure he would be able to speak in a very short time. He had been good at French at school, and even though that was over fifty years ago he was quietly confi dent. After picking out his some what battered suitcase, pur chased for family holidays way back in 1957, Sid walked out into the bright sunshine and looked around him. For the first time he realized that he was not ap propriately dressed. He glanced down at his tweed jacket, grey flannel trousers and brown brogues and made a mental note to devote some time to adjusting his wardrobe to a Mediterranean lifestyle.

Sid climbed into a taxi, gave the address of a hotel he had been recommended to spend his first few nights in Spain and sat back to view the scenery. There was a delightful informality about eve rything he saw around him, so al ien to someone who had spent all his life in a village in the Yorkshire dales. Sid was used to being able to identify all the cars in his street and know where each one would be parked every night. There was never any need for anyone to sound a horn. Here there were peo ple, cars, taxis and a terrible racket everywhere and Sid found himself clutching the edge of his car seat as his taxi shot off at an incredible speed. “My goodness” thought Sid. “I think this new life of mine is go ing to be full of surprises!”

Horsey progress at EHCRC

Faith’s homecoming

by Julie Day FAITH THE miniature horse with an artificial limb is making wonderful progress at the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre since her return home from Barcelona three weeks ago and is pottering around the yard with best pal Cookie. As Faith’s stump heals it reduces in size and to combat this problem Rod and Sue have to pad the stump so it will fit - EHCRC are waiting for delivery of a further two limbs made for Faith but it could take up to a year for the stump to fully heal. At this point a more sophisticated prosthetic limb will be required at around £2,000. AMERICA Rod and Sue Weeding have received an e-mail from Pam Kaster in America, author of ‘Molly the Pony’. Pam says: “It brings me much pleasure knowing that Molly’s story inspired Faith’s opera-

tion. I wish Faith a long and healthy life.” Molly also had a front leg amputation; a rare operation for a horse - she now visits hospitals and nursing homes where her amazing courage is an inspiration. GEORGIE MAY Local celebrity supporter Georgie May is writing a children’s book about Faith’s story, working in close contact with Centre founder Sue Weeding, and compiling the artwork herself. Aimed at the Christmas market, proceeds from book sales will help fund the work of the rescue centre. A further series of books will be written about each horse at the Rescue Centre. EHCRC receives no official funding and relies entirely on donations: to make a donation please visit www.easyhorsecare.net or call Sue on 652 021 980. Open days Wednesdays and Sundays from 1pm to 4pm. Hot food available, or why not try one of our delicious home made cakes?

Some light relief HAS BEEN pretty depressing again recently looking at the news in Spain with yet more labour market reforms on their way regards collective bargaining, which of course means that the unions are threatening strikes over clauses that seek to give businesses greater flexibility, such as having employees do longer shifts when the workload demands it and shorter ones when business is slow. Not to be left out, the CEOE business group are unhappy with the clause that stipulates that when a collective bargaining agreement expires, its terms will remain in effect while labour and management negotiate a new one. Oh to take them into a locked room, bang their heads together and tell them that it is their historic attitudes that have contributed in no small part to the current mess, and that they should grow up and accept the reality of life. On the subject of locked rooms I am still sniggering at the report of the passenger on an Iberia flight to Germany who stripped naked minutes after takeoff, made a nuisance of himself, and then locked himself in a toilet. Alcohol, rather surprisingly, was said not to be involved! Here’s the thing though: the pilot turned back and landed in Spain so the passenger could be removed, which meant that the other 110 passengers were delayed getting to Germany. I wonder which they would have preferred: keep the guy locked in the toilet and arrive in Germany on time, or pamper to the guys’ need to be the centre of attention and have their journey delayed? Last week I said there was absolutely no surprise that the Government are talking about keeping the 110kph speed limit in place, claiming that it has brought ‘enormous’ savings. This week though I think we may have seen the real reason for this apparent change of heart with the confirmation that the number of speeding fines issued rose by 8% in the last week of May, after an initial drop following the introduction of the reduced limit. Bit of extra cash, oh and the increased number of tourists about to hit the roads in Spain, means I am sure we will see the 110kph limit in

force throughout the summer: the police are certainly more visible on our part of the motorway these days. A recurring theme on my blog over the last couple of years has been the decline of the ‘Mediterranean diet’ in Spain, and the increasing levels of obesity. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure that the two are connected, and that there will only be one winner: the fast food companies. No surprise then to read that during the ‘crisis’ the fast food places (sorry I just can’t bring myself to use the word restaurant) have increased their turnover by 5% over the last year, to €2.6 billion. There has been a 2.2% increase in the number of outlets to 3,940. Andalucia has the second largest number of fast food outlets in Spain, second only to Madrid, and includes 98 Burger Kings and 71 McDonalds. It gets worse though: only 43% of us eat vegetables every day and the majority eat twice as much red meat as recommended. Almost 50% of those living in Spain are not doing any exercise, so no wonder the country is seeing an obesity pandemic. Women are eating better than men and the Spanish at least still eat around four portions of fish a week, far higher than their British counterparts. And finally, some potentially good news relating to the protection of woman from violence as the European human rights watchdog - the Council of Europe - has launched a legally binding international treaty to combat violence against women. This is the first treaty of its type in the World and France, Germany, Greece, Spain and Turkey are among the 13 countries that signed it. GIMP is a great free graphics software The

by

Karla Darocas

Information Technology & Communications

WHEN SUMMER spreads her sensational, sultry, lazy days upon us, my IT student roster goes flatter than a wig in the rain. This is when it is my time to learn something new and exciting in the IT realm. Recently, I installed Windows 7 operating system on my computer only to find out that some of my old software standbys were of no use. They were ‘not compatible’ - a trick of the trade that often companions new operating systems. One of my old favourites was suddenly rendered obsolete and to buy a new one was going to be big bucks. That software is the leading graphics programme called PhotoShop; a standard tool of the graphic trade and mine was now trash. I had heard via the designer network that there was a powerful player to rival Photoshop that was getting a lot of press. That graphics ground-breaker is better known as GIMP. While the name GIMP suggests a lame and lazy so-and-so, this software is anything but soft. Basically, the items that set PhotoShop apart from the rest of the digital imaging software crowd have always been its use of layers. Layers let graphic artists create levels of activity and then when finished these layers they are merged into one graphic design. Well, GIMP does layers too! So that is a bonus for me and any other graphic designer. The other thing that GIMP does that was always a PhotoShop domain is create transparent .GIF files. Transparent .GIF files are used in logos and other graphics where transparency is needed. For example, if you want your logo to look good on a variety of websites with different backgrounds then you will want a transparent .GIF file. GIMP is also a great instrument to fix digital photos. It has an entire repertoire of tools to enhance, crop, colour, modify and stylize your photos. GIMP also has a big cache of graphic free-style tools for drawing,

painting and designing. The fun continues with a large variety of fill-patterns like leopard skin, wood and rock to name just a few. GIMP does not fall short on filters either. I love the Sparkle filter, not found on PhotoShop. All in all, I was really pleased with GIMP and of course the price was right – FREE! If you have any questions about GIMP, give me a shout – info@KarlaDarocas.com

52% OF MOBILE users claim they have been victimised through the collection of unsolicited services and seven out of ten believe that customer service companies give misleading or incorrect information. The telecommunications sector has become the subject of the highest incidence of commercial violation reports for the past decade. Almost half of all users have complained to their respective customer service companies in the last six months and one in three complainants claim their case is never dealt with. 36% of users say they have been billed for calls not made; even more disturbing since customers with prepaid cards do not receive detailed statements.

Maintenance Obligations by

Carlos Baos

of White & Baos Abogados English & Spanish Solicitors

NEW AND In-force: The European Council Regulation No. 4/2009 of December 2008 in regards to jurisdiction, applicable law, recognition and enforcement of decisions and cooperation in matters related to maintenance obligations. As per its Article 76, this Regulation shall apply from 18th June 2011 i.e. in just a few days’ time. This EC Regulation is of great importance, as it will determine: a) The applicable law b) The Court that will have jurisdiction and c) The way to enforce a Court Order regarding the maintenance obligations arising from a family, relationship, parentage, and/or affinity. In other words, maintenance to children, spouses, ex-spouses etc… This regulation will be applicable also in Ireland since this country gave notice of their wish to adopt and apply it, however it will not be applicable in the UK. In the countries of the EU bound by the Hague Convention or those that have decided to be part of this regulation, such as Ireland, any decision for maintenance obligations or Court

Orders granted by a country member of the European Union (EU) part of this agreement, will be automatically and directly recognised and enforced just with the Certificate of the Court that granted the Order and without the need for any further process. However, it is important to make sure that the respondent has been notified about the existence of the claim. As previously stated, the UK has decided not to be part of this Regulation. So any decisions and Court Orders granted in relation to maintenances in the UK cannot be directly recognised or executed in another Country of the EU. Therefore for the recognition and execution of these UK Orders a process will need to be followed. In this process the reasons for a UK Court Order not to be recognised in another EU country are: a) If such a recognition is manifestly contrary to public policy. b) Where it was given by default of appearance, if the defendant was not served with the document in sufficient time to enable him to arrange for his defence. c) If it is irreconcilable with a decision granted in a dispute between the same parties in an EU country or in some cases when it is not compatible with an earlier decision given in another Country (even if it is not part of the EU). CONCLUSION From 18th June 2011, the recognition and enforcement of Court Orders for maintenance obligations arising from a family relationship, parentage, marriage or affinity, will have a new instrument which aims to make the process simpler and

faster within the countries obliged by this Regulation. The information provided on this article is not intended to be legal advice, but merely conveys general information related to legal issues. This article is available in English and Spanish at our Web site: www.white-baos.com

Logging out by

Suzanne O’Connell Customer Care at Ábaco

TOWN HALLS, queues, unhelpful funcionarios, paperwork and photocopies... If you are a resident in Spain it is likely that these words have a particular resonance. They’re part and parcel of the procedures you go through to register your presence here. You stand in a queue to get a ticket, the ticket entitles you to set up an appointment, the appointment entitles you to a forest of forms to fill in. And of course, don’t forget to get everything copied twice - at least.

experience. You’re enthusiastic and full of the optimism that starting a new life in a new country brings. But what about the other end of the journey? When, for whatever reason, it’s time to pack your bags and head ‘home?’ The temptation can be to do just that. Logging out properly is just as important as logging in. If you don’t you leave the gates open for all kinds of problems – some of which you may not become aware of until years to come. So what should you do? Just like when you first arrived in Spain, you should take the process one step at a time. Your experience of living here means that you know not to expect to begin and complete the process one Friday afternoon. Break it up into manageable chunks and don’t leave it until the last minute.

Not your experience? Lucky you! For many residents this is only part of the picture when it comes to becoming a civil resident and getting your name on the padron. Then, armed with your padron, your civil residency, your NIE and SIP card – you discover that you need fiscal residency too: Uggghhh! You persevere because this is a new and exciting

AS A MINIMUM YOU SHOULD: • inform your bank – you will need to change your resident account to ‘non-resident’ • inform the town hall where you registered on the padron • go to the National Police office where the residency certificate was first issued

• if you have a residency card you should return it to the Foreigner’s Delegation Office in Alicante When you cancel your residency at the National Police office they will issue you with a stamped document that includes the date of and reason for cancellation. This is your proof that you’ve logged out properly. Unfortunately, there are tax implications too. Remember there could possibly be one more resident tax return to present the year after you return to the UK as taxes are presented retrospectively. After that, if you keep your property in Spain you will have the additional Spanish imputed income tax to pay as a non-resident. You will still need to complete a tax declaration but before December 31st rather than the 30th June deadline. It’s not a great deal of work – honestly - and when you’ve done you know you’ve left everything nice and tidy, ready for your dealings with HMRC, the DVLA, the NHS… Ábaco Asesores offers a door-to-door, personal service dealing with cancellation as well as advice and guidance on other legal and tax aspects when leaving Spain. Why should you make a tax return? THERE IS not much time left in which to file an income tax return (Declaración de la Renta) for 2010, and there are still many people who are yet to complete this task. There is a popular held belief amongst English people living in Spain that this particular task does not apply to them...they are wrong! There is much greater awareness now by the tax authorities of the number of ex-pats there are living in Spain, and they are looking to collect their tax revenues. SO, WHAT ARE THE RULES? Basically, if you are spending more than 6 months of the year living in Spain, then you are considered to be resident here for that tax year, and hence are required to file your income tax return in Spain for that year. OTHER CONSIDERATIONS If the time spent in Spain is also backed up by the fact that you own a property here, rent a property, have a padron certificate, or a certificate of residency, or indeed do any kind of work here then this is all more evidence of residency in Spain, and it is this concept of ‘residency’ which determines where you pay your taxes, in this case, Spain. A common response to the question of taxes is that ‘Well I pay my taxes in the UK, so I´m okay’. Well we can now see from the rules above, that this is no solution. There is actually no need for Spanish tax residents to pay UK income tax, so there is a possibility of paying a different amount of tax if you continue to do this. For example there is much greater tax relief for mortgage payers and tenants of property in Spain than in the UK. It is an important point to note that there are several tax planning advantages to being Spanish tax resident, one of which involves the issue of inheritance which will affect many people with assets, including mainly, property, here in Spain.

It is important to seek professional advice in this area, and the transition from UK tax resident to Spanish tax resident, can be done very smoothly. NON-RESIDENT TAXES If you are a property owner in Spain, and it is used as a second-home, then you will be liable to a small non-resident tax, based upon the official value ‘valor catastral’ of your property. The filing deadline for this tax return is 31st December 2011, for the tax year 2010. So, whether resident or non-resident in Spain, we all should ensure we are filing correctly our annual tax return here. It is also important that you correctly inform HM Revenue & Customs of your changing circumstances. Thus ensuring that you are not continuously sent self assessment’ tax returns to complete long after you have left the UK for example. Please seek professional advice in this area of tax residency. All of the above can be explained and carried out in a smooth transition process which will ensure this important area of life is in order. Here at Smith & Sendra Accountants we offer a free no-obligation appointment which gives all of our clients the opportunity to obtain clear and comprehensive information for them to be able to make educated decisions in this matter. An alternative place to park your funds and get 9% interest guaranteed … SALES ARE booming in the international car park sector as investors turn towards alternative assets in order to offset continued poor performance and volatility within traditional investments. Car park investment is an innovative, niche asset class offering market-leading yield and capital growth prospects. Private and UK pension fund investors are now able to purchase a specific car park space in a global city-centre or business district location, identified by extensive research as having the greatest potential for strong revenue streams due to demand, coupled with superior capital growth prospects. The car park bays are not stand-alone multi-storey car parks which rely on short term visitors for shopping or tourism, but instead form all or part of large city centre office buildings, where there is a captive market for the spaces and also where demand is created by corporate tenants who enter into longer-term contracts with specialist car park operators. Returns are guaranteed for the first 5 years at 7% year one, rising to 11% year five, giving an average return of 9% gross per annum. Since the product was launched on September 15th 2010 an incredible £2 million worth of

Boost for Britain BRITAIN THIS week received a triple boost to its advanced engineering and manufacturing industries as the giant Spanish energy company Repsol led a number of fresh investments by major international companies in the UK. Repsol has agreed to buy 100% of Sea Energy Renewables, a Scottish company that promotes and develops offshore wind farms. The €57M (£50M) deal represents the entry of yet another major Spanish company into Scotland’s energy sector, following both Gamesa and Iberdrola. British Ambassador Giles Paxman said, “This is a big vote of

spaces have been snapped up in just the first eight weeks. Importantly, guarantees are built-in via escrow accounts whilst funds are protected via UK Trustees to add an additional layer of security. This is the first time this interesting and lucrative asset class has been available to private investors via a secure structure and from just £25,000 per space. In comparison to traditional ‘bricks and mortar‘ property investment, there is a great deal of research to suggest that says car parks are a better investment in the long term. The key with any property is location and all the car parks are in commercial buildings where people will drive to work and as such the car parks will be in prime locations. Once the funds are parked, how do investors exit? There are three options after the 5 years: • Sell the car park space back to the operator for the original purchase price • Sell on the open market • Negotiate and renew the rental lease with the operator. confidence in the UK economy and shows how Spanish companies continue to see Britain as an attractive place to invest. Scotland has a quarter of Europe’s offshore wind energy potential, and it’s great that yet another Spanish company has seized the opportunity to invest in Britain.” The news came in the same week as BMW announced that it will invest an additional £500 million (€565M) in its UK production facilities over the next three years, mostly at Cowley in Oxford, home of the Mini. The famous car has been a symbol of British design and manufacturing for 50 years, and BMW sold more than 8,000 British-built Minis in Spain last year. BMW wants to expand the Mini lineup to seven models, with a coupé version planned this year and the Mini Roadster in

2012 – both to be made in Oxford. Nearly two million units of the model launched by BMW in 2001 have now been produced and sold worldwide; twice as many as originally envisaged. In addition, Nissan this week announced that it is to invest £192M (€217M) in its plant in Sunderland, where it will design and build the next version of its highly successful Qashqai car, of which more than 30,000 models were sold in Spain last year. It is also the UK’s tenth best-selling car. Giles Paxman said: “These deals show that international companies are increasingly aware of the UK’s manufacturing and advanced engineering skills. I hope that more Spanish firms will be encouraged to look at the opportunities on offer in Britain.”

homeowners to replace old air conditioning units, (irrespective of age & model) when exchanging them for a ‘Class A’ rated unit. All residing in the Comunidad Valenciana whether of English, Spanish or any other nationality are eligible for the grants, which are given at point of sale and later claimed back by the retailer. €1.2 million has been put aside for the scheme, to be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. In order to qualify, the beneficiary will need to provide a copy of their residencia or NIE plus a copy of their passport. They also need to give up their old air con unit so that it can be recycled and so that the refrigerant can be disposed of safely. Grants are available for the exchange of one compressor per household (with one or more interior units) and the amount of the subsidy depends on the KW output for the new unit. As with similar schemes the installations must be carried out by an ‘instaladora RITE’, licenced and authorised to carry out airconditioning installation & maintenance and registered with the Ministry of Industry. Michael Smeed from 100% Plumbing explained: “Studies highlighting the damage caused to the ozone layer by the HCFCs contained in older units gave cause for the R-22 refrigerant to be outlawed some years ago and as a result it has become more and more difficult to find technical assistance for these older units. This, coupled with the modern energy saving possibilities, means that there has never been a better time to upgrade and benefit from quieter, safer and more energy-efficient systems.” For more information contact 100% Plumbing on 96 583 5939. Clodagh & Dick Handscombe Practical gardeners and authors

ALTHOUGH THE rather wetter spring than normal delayed first dips in many swimming pools and tapas evenings in the garden, hot summer weather should start in earnest soon as summer officially starts next week. So are you yet ready to take advantage of the drier sunny weather, your terraces, colourful internal views and green distant views to the mountains for some and the sea for others? This week we look at ten things that are worth doing: 1. Give grubby terraces and pathways a pressure clean. Place seats in shady spots with good views

Garden preparations for summer

2. Place more permanent seats in shady spots with good views within or beyond the garden. 3. If young visitors are expected install a sandpit away from the swimming pool – in a few years it can be converted into a raised bed for youngsters to grow their first crops of vegetables. 4. Hands can be grubby after completing the planting of seedlings and plants, especially if gloves or barrier creams have not been used. Also after all the other work of the last few months hands can have layers of hard skin. We were thrilled with a new handy cleaning method recently: we visited The Natural Fish Spa as one enters Javea Arenal from the town and hung our hands in a fish tank of warm water which housed several hundred small ‘Doctor’ fish that munched away at the hard skin for fifteen minutes. Now have smooth hands with a natural oily feeling. We also did our feet which was a 30 minute job! A week later Dick did a 150km mountain walk for leisure; he was the only one of the group that did not get blisters! 5. Talking of fish, tomorrow we need to thin out the weed and water lily leaves in our ponds so that we can see our fish. If you do the same the weed is as good as ‘mulch’ under hedges or as an addition to the compost heap. By the

Roses have been amazing this spring but now many need pruning to stimulate follow on flowers. 7. Just had an email asking what can be done to deter flying bugs. When we planted up our garden we placed a Lady of the Night under the kitchen window and lantanas under all windows. If you do this on apartment terraces use large containers to accommodate the large root ball that will develop. If you are working in the garden and are being attacked rub some lantana leaves in your hands and then over areas of bare skin. You can also pre-prepare a bottle or jar of lantana leaves in olive oil. 8. Spring lilies are in full bloom and look fantastic but as soon as they flower petals fall and they are an eyesore. Cut them back a third at this stage so that sap can drain down to the bulbs amongst other plants. 9. Spring growth can partially cover the surface of solar panels operating garden ponds and lights so cut back surrounding growth now. 10. If you have a drip watering system clean

GuardCam: Lights, camera, action! Car being vandalised? Neighbours have a grudge against you? Graffiti on your walls? Animals defecating in your garden? Your tools and bicycles being stolen?Unauthorised vulnerable swimmers in your Community pool at night? Dark underground car park? GuardCam is the perfect ‘spy camera’ combined with a powerful floodlight. On approach GuardCam will: • Detect the intruder • Floodlight the area • Initiate a video recording • Deliver an audible warning In the UK, GuardCam has taken off a storm, with units sold to councils, housing associations, companies and individual homes. Carl

Barclay, the well-known Javea Locksmith who runs Casa Segura Locksmiths has negotiated the licence to bring this simple but incredibly effective solution to Spain. Carl, a registered Locksmith with the Guardia Civil for many years, tells RTN, “Many households and businesses in Spain experience crimes such as burglaries, car theft, vandalism and bogus callers which cause distress and nuisance. And very often these turn into repeat attacks. “GuardCam has been developed to offer a relatively low cost yet sensible solution, and it is now so popular in the UK that I am bringing it to Spain. Criminals intensely dislike attention being drawn to their activities and the last thing they want is a record of what they are doing. “The unit will detect an intruder, illuminate the area, emit a clear vocal warning and record clear

digital images from a single integrated unit. The images are recorded onto a digital memory card loop, the unit is properly rubberised and sealed to be weather protected, and a Tradesman or DIY-er is able to fit it easily: everything you need is included in the box.” GuardCam is a complete all-in-one PIR floodlight, camera, speaker and DVR system. Simply connect to mains power, fix to a wall and the built in DVR will record straight to the 2GB SD card supplied for complete peace of mind. Oldest images are deleted and overwritten as the card reaches capacity ensuring recent events are always available. Carl Continues “On first inspection GuardCam appears to be a combined floodlight and PIR detector, albeit with a modern design. A closer look reveals its many additional features. Integral to the main body of the unit is a high resolution video camera, miniature SD recording device and powerful speech unit which has the option to deliver one of 3 messages upon activation or the speech unit can be switched off. GuardCam is CE approved and meets the latest EU energy requirements by incorporating a 230W low energy grade C halogen lamp.” From time to time a product enters the market that avoids unnecessary features to offer a simple solution to the problem. GuardCam from Casa Segura Locksmiths is one such product since Detector-controlled floodlighting is already recognised as an extremely effective deterrent against casual crime. GuardCam raises the bar against casual crime at an extremely affordable cost. Every villa should have one. Phone 96 646 3712 to reserve your GuardCam for only €137 + IVA or visit Casa Segura Locksmiths at Avenida del Pla 116 (opposite Solbank), Javea Arenal to see it working. Downloading software

Computing with aunty virus

Google advice is no help Richard via email asks: MY COMPUTER went into the shop for repair (corrupted files) - after picking it up fully repaired I connected it up. After about 30 minutes a program called ‘Whitesnake’ downloaded itself onto my computer. Google advice is to return to an earlier start but I cannot do this as my computer was corrupted. Any advice please? Aunty Says: I’ve not heard of Whitesnake Richard and unless it is some kind of virus or spyware you should be able to uninstall it from ‘start’ ‘control panel’. Your comment “After about 30 minutes a program called whitesnake downloaded itself onto my computer” is a bit worrying as nothing should download or install itself without your permission, so make sure you run a full scan with your antivirus and antispyware programs just in case you’ve picked something up.

problems with website Carol via email asks: CAN YOU help please? When I use the Ryanair website a message comes up “out of memory at line 67” I am also unable to get into the menus for entering details such as fly from/to airport/dates/number of people etc. but I can get flight details if I access via the special offers. This problem has only occurred since they changed their web site. Also when I use Easyjet I get the message “stack overflow at line 80” and then “out of memory at line 67”. Have you come across this problem before and can you help? Aunty Says: I have come across very similar problems Carol and most of the time a browser upgrade was the solution. To make testing a lot easier could you download and install the latest Firefox browser from www.mozilla.org and the latest Java from www.sun.com and try both websites again and let me know what happens.

Aunty Says: Hi Richard. Bison webcams are built into a lot of laptops (I’m assuming you have a laptop) and they don’t have a website or deal directly with the end user. You will need to download the latest driver software for your exact model of laptop (which you should find on a sticker underneath) from the laptop manufacturer’s website. If you cannot find a Windows7 driver then the Vista one may work.

package not including a database facility Cliff via email asks: I HAVE a new PC running Windows7 with the Microsoft Student & Office program package which unfortunately does not include a database facility. On my previous PC running Windows XP, apart from Word & Excel, I also had Microsoft Works Database. This was extremely useful to catalogue and keep tabs of my extensive book collection. I cannot justify the cost of the Professional software package which does include a database facility but I do however still have the original Microsoft Works CD which included Works Database. Is the solution as simple as running this CD on my new PC, or will I possibly be opening a can of worms. Aunty Says: Hello Cliff. It really depends on what version of Microsoft Works you have on your CD. I think Works version 8 and upwards will work fine, and version 7 may need some tweaking. You are safe running the install to see what happens as Windows will simply not install the program if it is likely to cause any problems. There is a function in

friend suggested I start using ‘webmail’ as that will be faster. What is webmail and how do I go about downloading it? Aunty Says: You are already using webmail Tom. Webmail is basically any email service that you access via your browser (in

Windows7 (and Vista) called ‘compatibility mode’ that allows you to install and run older versions of programs that were designed specifically for XP. If you right click on the setup file on the CD and choose ‘properties’ you will see a ‘compatibility’ tab where you can tick the box where it says ‘Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows XP. Click OK and try the install from the CD. Windows 7 is very safe when it comes to installing incorrect programs and I have yet to break my copy even though I have tried everything and anything to do so. your case Internet Explorer) rather than using a dedicated email program such as Outlook or Incredimail. There is an option at the very bottom of your Gmail page called ‘basic HTML’ which will load a slightly simpler version of Gmail, but to be honest I think it may be time to look at getting an ADSL connection installed.

That’s all for this week, email me on auntyvirus@roundtownnews.com and I will do my best to sort you out

GADGET INSPECTOR

Gadget Inspector investigates the case of: the Lounge-Tek Lounge-Wood and 3M Ergonomic Mouse THIS WEEK the Inspector shows that it is possible to work and rest at the same time with the Lounge-Tek Lounge-Wood and 3M ergonomic mouse. The Lounge-Tek Lounge-Wood is a laptop stand designed to make it easier to use a laptop while sitting in your armchair, sofa or even in bed. It can be quickly set up to stand on the left or right of wherever you

lounge-Tek Lounge-Wood laptop stand

are sitting. The height of the laptop table can also be adjusted, as can the tilt angle. In addition there is a separate mouse stand that can double as a cup, glass or remote control stand should you not be using a separate mouse. This can be positioned for left and right-handed use too. And just so you don’t feel mobile separation anxiety there is a separate tray mounted on the sail so you won´t miss that vital call or text. The Lounge-Tek Lounge-Wood is available in a number of finishes, with or without the sail. Lounge-Tek also produces a metal version in multiple finishes called the Lounge-Book. The 3M ergonomic mouse is the perfect accessory for the relaxed computing lifestyle. The mouse is designed with a vertical grip to keep your hand and wrist at a neutral angle, clinically proven to alleviate the pain and discomfort of Repetitive Stress Injuries – leaving your wrist nicely loose for other activities (like playing tennis obviously…) There is a left-right toggle button at the top of the grip operated with the thumb and replacing the traditional left-right mouse buttons. This feels a little strange at first

as you´re using your thumb for both tasks instead of a finger, but it soon becomes second nature. There is also a trigger on the grip that replaces the thumbwheel of a traditional mouse. The 3M ergonomic mouse is of the optical variety and available as a wireless or cabled version. The wireless version is best as you won´t knock your remote control off the stand while using it. The Inspector’s Verdict: Is permanent connectivity such a good thing? Only twenty years ago the computer was tucked away at work and in the home office and never crossed the boundary into the living/ relaxing spaces. Now with the modern desire to be permanently connected and available to every cyber diversion that distinction no longer exists. If that´s your bag then at least do it in comfort and these gadgets will certainly help with that. No doubt sometime soon there´ll be a review of the Boggo-Stand for the ultimate lavatory connectivity experience. The Lounge-Tek Lounge-Wood is available online direct from the manufacturer and costs from €324. The all-metal Lounge-Book

3M Ergonomic mouse

version is available starting at €99. The 3M ergonomic mouse is available from online stores costing around €65 for the wireless version and €45 for the cable version.

about Chinese Medicine by

Robert Vandevelede

Ex-president Australian Acupuncture & Chinese medicine Association

AS PEOPLE look beyond the confines of western medicine to treat their ailments the popularity of Chinese medicine continues to grow. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been around for at least 5,000 years and is relevant today because the system has evolved to adapt to modern circumstances. Chinese Medicine encompasses a broad range of therapeutic interventions that include Tui Na (A sort of remedial massage and manipulative therapy), exercise therapy, food therapy, diet and lifestyle advice and preventative healthcare to treat a range of illnesses. It is also used to regulate general immune function and assist with disease prevention.

BALANCE The Chinese believed that every living thing is sustained by a balance of two opposing yet complementary forces of energy: Yin and Yang - their natural interaction making up life essence, or Qi - energy that flows through numerous channels in the body called meridians. If the flow of Qi in the meridians becomes blocked or there is an inadequate supply, then the body fails to maintain harmony and balance, leaving you potentially vulnerable to illness or disease. Stress,

overwork, poor diet and other lifestyle factors can disrupt the balance and flow of Qi. Chinese Medicine restores the body’s natural balance by removing the cause of blockage, normalizing the flow of Qi. CHINESE HERBAL MEDICINE Herbal medicine is the oldest form of Chinese Medicine. Traditionally, patients are prescribed herbs based on individual symptoms, taking the herbs home to first boil and then drink. Today there are more than 450 substances commonly used in different forms. Qualified practitioners understand that not all people with the same health condition will display the same symptoms. So your prescription will be formulated to match your individual health problem. ARE HERBS SAFE? Herbs can have a powerful effect on our bodies and should be treated with caution and respect. Chinese herbs have been tested for thousands of years, but some herbs can be toxic in large doses or cause allergic reactions. So it is important to seek advice from a qualified practitioner.

A tuina massage will leave you feeling energized and happy

ACUPUNCTURE It is a common misconception that Acupuncture can only be used to relieve pain. Acupuncture can be used to treat most common ailments and especially chronic conditions. Patients should experience only minimal discomfort because the needles are very fine and have no cutting edge. Once inserted there may be a slight tingling around the acu-point, a sensation of warmth, heaviness or nothing at all. MOXIBUSTION Commonly used in conjunction with Acupuncture to treat chronic diseases and involves the use of the dried leaves of the mugwort plant – called moxa. The leaves are either rolled into sticks

or made into tiny cones and burned on ointment or a slice of ginger. CUPPING Cupping involves the use of suction cups made out of Pyrex glass or bamboo that are applied over larger areas of the boy like the back, shoulders or thighs to help ease chronic pain. TUINA Tuina is a form of remedial massage and manipulative therapy that treats muscles and joints by stimulating the flow of Qi. Patients will often feel energized and happy, even emotional. If you have any queries regarding this article or TCM in general, please write to robertvdvelde@telefonica.net.

17 - 23 june 2011 Dear Doctor, My husband has a swollen testicle. He has been seen by a Doctor and told that it is something called a hydrocele and he does not need to be seen again. I feel very worried about this. Can you tell me what a hydrocele is, and is it serious?

Ask the Specialist by

Dr Colin Evans

MB.ChB., F.R.C.S., BDS., FDSRCS

A HYDROCELE is simply a collection of fluid which forms in the scrotum, normally in front of one of the testes. It occurs when the fluid produced to lubricate the testes does not drain away in the normal fashion. Hydroceles can vary greatly in size and are not normally painful. If the hydrocele is large then it might cause discomfort during walking, exercising or sexual activity. A hydrocele can be formed as a result of injury or disease of the testicle such as infection, inflammation or occasionally tumours. In the majority of cases however, the cause is unknown. If disease of the testicle has been ruled out and your husband has no pain or discomfort, nothing needs to

be done. However, should it start to cause problems, the fluid can be removed. There are two treatment options available: DRAINAGE A needle is inserted and the fluid is drained off. The possible problem with this method is that the sac may refill within a few months and the process will need repeating. When the patient is either unfit for, or does not want surgery, this is a suitable method for relieving discomfort. Surgery: a small incision is made either into the lower abdomen or the scrotum and the fluid drained off. The surgeon will also create a seal so that the fluid cannot reform. The procedure is a minor one and normally is done as a day case without the need for an overnight stay in hospital. This is obviously a more permanent treatment but may not suitable or desirable for all men. If your husband begins to experience discomfort,

new symptoms or has any concerns I would suggest that he sees his doctor again.

Sixth sense People are constantly asking me what is a Psychic? Mind you they are a breed apart from the ones who thrust their hands just under my nose and then expect me to read their palms, and wonder why I don’t. There is much confusion out there as to the various esoteric workers and their proper titles. And, in reference to prescribed divination there are different titles for those who work within the frame as Spirit Workers. Basically we have five senses, each and everyone of us. These senses are of hearing, tasting, smelling, touching or seeing. Though we may have different levels of these senses, and some may be stronger than others, the five senses are what we have to get by in the World, and they help us enormously. Imagine being without sight, or unable to hear, to lose your taste, to not be able to appreciate scent and be deprived of the joy of touch. Each and every sense links to our perception of the World, and the loss of one of these five would have very specific implications in our lives. If something is perceived or noted or experienced without using the five senses it is automatically deemed to be Psychic. The sixth sense is the force of psychic energy and we can all use it from time to time each of us, in different or in certain dynamic ways. Certainly we are, all of us, born with a sixth sense but it remains very undeveloped in some people, and appears highly charged with others. The gift of the sixth sense can come at any time, sometimes under pressure when it is really vitally needed and sometimes when contemplation and inner most meditation has deemed it apt. It isn’t brought about by an act of faith or a regular pattern of devotional energy, it is something that is just there, and available to those who turn to it and are able to tune in. Fine tuning is very important in the psychic process. The consciousness of being able to work with the energy of

postbag Email your letters to me at: kennycorris@roundtownnews.com Kenny, I know that I have something, but I just don’t know what. Because I have turned my back on my spirituality can it ever come back? I have had a family and given them all my attention, now there comes a time that I can do things for myself once more. Karin.S. Karin, it is never too late. You have prioritised with your family, and that was the right thing for you to do, of course. However things are about to change, and Spirit will welcome you back as if you never left,( you most probably didn’t) and help you to walk your journey of life on the spiritual pathway. Time for you to examine your strengths and to see what is possible and I will help if you need me. Everything will come along if you just let it, so keep an open mind, being a Mother has prepared you for that; and that which will now come your way as you continue this, the pathway to enlightenment.

psychic powers has to be worked on. It may be initially quite difficult to get the full message, or to take on the nature of what, literally, is a wave of energy sent to receptive people with a view of bringing clarity, solution and forward direction. Psychic energies always tell the truth and bring divination to its knees; since, otherwise, a version of the truth may be all that exists, and psychic energy demands that it is appropriate to advise with spiritual All psychic messages are sent for a sincere purpose, not to shock or cajole, not to wag a finger in supposition or hearsay or to cause a commotion, but once given out they can be interpreted many ways. A Psychic Medium uses the psychic energy throughout a reading to reinforce the message they pass on to their client when contacting the realms of the Spirit World. So too may the divination brought about by Psychic energy bring levels of guidance and help, always enriching the process of spiritual reasoning and logic. We are all born with the sixth sense. It comes to us in many ways. If you have a gut reaction to something you will feel it within you, but it will not be heard, seen, tasted, smelt or touched, it remains an intuitive energy within. First impressions of newly encountered people in our lives are a highly charged psychic experienced we can all recount. Why are we drawn to certain people and not others? Falling in love and particularly love at first sight are truly psychic acts. Here although we do see, hear and touch, there is something else within that cements people together and heralds a love commitment, often for life. You use your psychic gifts daily to make the decisions that you need to live your life. Sometimes you, like me, miss the signals, miss out on something, but that’s highly psychic too!

horoscopes by Kenny Corris With the strength of Mercury backing, Uranus takes on actions from the weekend onwards, in your first house. Paving the way forward nothing is written in stone, and this is a great time to tell things the way that they are with no holds barred and with a view to getting things right in the future. Mercury’s strong messages of communication and clarity are well applied to what you are about to see for yourself. You are being surely tested right now, and are going to pass with flying colours if you can keep your temper, whilst others appear to be losing theirs. Stay cool and calm and everything will come to you if you pause and just bide your time. There are serious issues within, and with a brief to make amends you have to adopt a wait and see policy, however tempted you are to settle things right now. Mars is on a mission and though it offers the power of support it does not illuminate a suitable way forward. Using your power of choice right now may make a significant difference to things as they stand currently, and pave the way to a lasting solution that is amicable all around. Think of yourself for a change, it certainly isn’t selfish, but it is self preserving and a positive step in the right direction. Midweek comes the Summer Solstice and the exalting of Cancer. These are happy sunny days in which you can look back at your many successes just lately with a simple smile of achievement. What has happened had to, but you appear to have moved on and anything is now possible if you need it to be. Planning a break or an escape allows you to see things from a different angle and to take a breather. Mercury allows you to pass on a message that you mean business, especially as your pride is at stake and someone has been stirring things behind your back. The truth of the matter is what has to be told, and you will notice that for some reason those who really matter want to hear what you have to say for a change. Deep down they know what is really going on, and want to support you this time. With Mercury in actions with Neptune and Jupiter there is an impetus to strike while the iron is hot and do what you know that you have to. The current interactions involve spur of the moment chances to make things better for all concerned all around. With an ebullient Jupiter and a highly volatile Saturn bringing inner direction, anything is possible, and luck and wisdom are heavily on your side. Keeping your balance may not be so easy with so much happening around you right now. Expect a busy week with demands on you, and keep a clear head into the bargain. Though things will right themselves, your own opinions can, and will make a significant difference to those around you who depend on you. Pluto’s actions with Capricorn may be responsible, but you will take it all in your stride as usual. You have a bee in your bonnet about something, and won’t let it rest until you are quite sure you have had your say. Someone isn’t telling the truth and you know it, but the truth will be told and you will be so much better off for it. Rest assured that your highly psychic energies will come to the fore to assist you when needed and show you a suitable alternative for what you have in mind. With a wily Jupiter on the loose and with conflicting energies fixed on actions with Mercury in conjunction with Saturn and opposing Pluto, you have, for sure, a lot on your plate right now. Eliminate any pressure and make decisions based on probabilities and you are taking a step very positively in the right direction, as well as timing the very best response under the current circumstances. Events with Pluto force you to examine recent actions from the roots upwards. The negativity of a fixed Pluto and the positive enquiring energy you are famous for, bring some conflict, and timing is of the essence. If someone is unhappy with recent events they have to know that you acted the only way that you could have done under circumstances that are not yet fully known to anyone but yourself. With Uranus in cahoots with Aries there is a need to keep control and eliminate any thoughts of compromise. You are the truth keeper of the horoscope, but with your hand on your heart you couldn’t have done any more than you have just lately. If others do not wish to take this on board then it will be to their detriment, and unfortunately they will have to find things out the hard way. With mighty Neptune and inspiring Chiron together in the house of Pisces there is a plan to make changes in your life, and to turn things around the way that you want them! You have taken care of others lately with much love and consideration, now you need that same cooperation from them to help you well on the way with a new project that really needs your expertise and energy to make it lift off.

If it’s your birthday this week... Communication is the name of the game right now. Make sure that you are sending out all the right messages if you want to be heard, because your positive actions speak louder than words ever could, and show you that the way ahead is opening up to you at long last.

LOTS OF new venues are participating in the VISTA Card scheme, listed at www.vistacostablanca.com A full list of Venues and offers are listed featuring a really great way to go out and enjoy a meal or soak up some fantastic entertainment with a few extra benefits. The restaurants who participate in the VISTA Card scheme have reported a significant increase in turnover over the last month and now with all of the theme parks open for the Summer, card holders can benefit from big discounts on tickets! Talking of tickets, VISTA has opened its own ticket office at Queens Hotel located in Plaza Constitution, in the Old Town Benidorm. This is a very busy part of the Old Town directly opposite Tapas Alley and is open all day and evening till 2am. Discounted Tickets for the theme parks

are available and also tickets for Area Disco – Benidorm Palace – Molino Show – Rich Bitch Show – Day trips excursions and Airport Transfers. Area Disco is offering 2 Free drinks and a Free T-Shirt with a ticket to visit 3 of the best Discotheques in Benidorm, situated on the N332. Area Disco includes KM Disco; Privilege and Penelope. Another new addition to the VISTA Card scheme is the ‘What’s On i Guide’. Vista launched this publication in May 2011 and issue one was a great success: the small handy size guide offers lots of local information, useful telephone numbers, maps and lists all of the participating venues for VISTA Card. The guide also has lots of pages of advertising for bars, restaurants, entertainment and all theme parks and attractions. The overwhelming response has

now after issue 2 for June 2011 resulted in a further edition for Albir – Altea –Alfaz del Pi. Having a separate guide for these areas will allow more localised information and advertising benefits. Both editions are distributed to local supermarkets; tourist information offices; all participating bars and restaurants and the RTN travel shops in Calle Gerona and Rincon Benidorm. 10,000 of each area edition per month so there should be enough to get round to interested visitors and residents. The future is looking good for both VISTA and the participating outlets, with many businesses getting the benefits of the VISTA Card and the website and also promoting their business in the new ‘What’s On iGuide’ we can see further growth. VISTA is now speaking to businesses in North Costa Blanca and aim to have a third ‘What’s On iGuide’ for North Costa Blanca very soon. For any business owners of bars, restaurants or entertainment and leisure venues it is a great way to promote and market your business without spending much money. We offer fantastic rates and give back a full package of benefits: from as little as 25€ per month we are able to market and promote via the internet and all of our publications. VISTA is working with other partner media companies to reach out to the public with now over 145,000 copies of media publications each month. The VISTA Card will soon be available as a pre-paid Master Card that uniquely identifies the card holder with a card number, the same as any other credit or debit card. The difference will be that the card is only used as a pre-paid option so that means you must have the money on the card account before

you can use it. The benefits are that if someone does not have a credit card or bank account here in Spain you can purchase a VISTA Pre–Paid Master Card – these will be available over the counter just like buying a phone ‘pay as you go’ card. The VISTA CARD web site will allow you to log in and activate your card then transfer money from any other bank account or debit card account anywhere in the world. Or if you only have cash then you can use one of the VISTA CARD affiliated payment shops and the cash will be loaded onto the card for you. The biggest and most attractive benefit of this card is that you don’t need to carry much cash around with you, you can get money put on your card by anyone who has your login details in any other country and then you can make purchases or ATM withdrawals using the MasterCard symbol. This new innovative product is being used across Europe and is the latest and easiest way of looking after your spending; all wrapped up in one VISTA Discount card that saves you money.

Curtain rises on drama festival by Jack Troughton

S

IX THEATRE groups – three youth and three adult – perform a feast of theatre over three nights in this year’s Costa Blanca Drama Festival. The talents of the likes of Careline Kids, Javea Players, Monte Pego Theatre Company, Laude Lady Elizabeth School, and Big Fish Entertainment, will be pitted against each other in the keen competition for prizes. The festival runs each evening from Monday 27th to Wednesday 29th June in the unique Amphitheatre at Monte Pego from 8pm and audiences are promised some exciting fare. And all profits from this annual and popular event will go to the new Children’s Theatre Fund – designed to bring drama to under-privileged children. Seat numbers are limited and the organisers encourage theatre-goers to book early to grab a slice of the action. Tickets are 10€ per night or 25€ for all three evenings of entertainment. Ticket holders can also have free access to the luxurious

by Jack Troughton YOUNG ROCKERS cranked up the volume to produce a cracking evening’s entertainment at the Penelope Nightclub in Javea. Six bands hit the stage running on Saturday night and pulled out a medley of classic songs from the Arctic Monkeys to Jesse J, Blondie to

Bon Jovi. The guys and girls are students of the successful concept that is Javea Rock Academy – teaching them how to play music through rehearsing and performing in bands. It was the rock school’s first visit to Penelope, tucked away in Javea Old Town, and while nothing like the legendary Marquee allows everyone the joy of a club performance crammed onto a small stage under coloured lights in front of an enthusiastic crowd. And just as the doctor ordered, it was loud, hot, thirsty work, and great fun. RTN has not seen these youngsters at play for some two years. My how they’ve grown! Musicians confidently interchange through the different line-up of the bands and it was impressive to note how the students are growing in stature on stage – not just playing songs but starting to really perform and put on a show.

Hot dogs in demand The Delfin EAT OUT under the stars next weekend when animal charity APASA holds its annual summer barbeque. Guests get to dance to the OK Band and the Swingman. And the charity provides the grub – BBQ and other refreshments – as well as the bar, with proceeds helping rescued animals. The night starts at 7pm at Font Santa, Teulada, just off the Teulada to Moraira road, next to the Go Cart track, and finishes late. APASA will also have a stall at Javea International Fair tonight (Friday) and tomorrow night (Saturday) where people can also support the work of the charity.

Pub raises support for Afghan Heroes

THE DELFIN pub in Calpe raised 693.80€ by holding a Bring and Buy sale and a Race night in aid of the Afghan Heroes Charity. Marion Bertham, the regional coordinator, said it was a fantastic effort and would like to thank all who took part, especially the following sponsors: The Delfin Pub; Foxes Bar & Restaurant; Metro Restaurant; Faulty Towers; Regina Café Bar; Pueblo Bar; The Lounge Bar; Oasis Bar; Kwik Save; Patrick; Terspalmeras; K&M; Calpe Aventura; Sherridan; Food 4 and Sue who gave three hours cleaning. The next event is a Bike Fest and Family day on Saturday 18th June at the Camping Fonts D’Algar.

Cameo helps Hugh the Hero!

Should you take the little sugars home? A RAFFLE held at Cameo’s latest show at Bar Mediterraneo, Teulada on Saturday 11th June raised 200€ to add to the funds of local man Hugh Norton, who recently walked the length of Hadrian’s Wall to raise money for the worthy charity Help for Heroes. The photograph shows Hugh’s wife Pat who organised the raffle, with the Cameo cast. Cameo’s next show is at Ciudad Patricia Senior Resort, Benidorm on Saturday 9th July. Tickets at just 5€ may be obtained by calling the Cameo Box Office on 656 483 645 (open 10am to 2pm: Monday to Friday) or by reserving at the Main Reception at Ciudad Patricia. The raffle on this night will be organised by HELP of Benidorm.

Will someone please explain to me why we have such a problem taking stuff home? If we go out shopping, make our selection from what’s available then pay for them and then leave them on the counter and walk out of the shop we are described as being forgetful at best or stupid at worst. But leave a perfectly decent meal which you have paid for in a restaurant and for some reason not been able to finish and that seems to be the proper thing to do. It must be something to do with sitting down or the fine china that makes us all compliant, we seem to be able to walk out of a takeaway without much problem even pizzas, burgers, fish & chips and donner kebabs pose no threat, in fact the sooner we can extricate ourselves from within the better. But put a knife and fork and some proper china in front of us on a table with a cloth on it and a proper posh seat and we totally lose control. In America they can’t wait to see the back of you in restaurants, any pause in eating your meal for whatever reason and you’ll find a waitress there asking if you want the rest “to go” - try finishing the mouthful you already have before you reply and your meal or what’s left of it if it is still in front to you. But now it’s in a plastic restaurant-branded swing-top-lidded box together with the bill and a

couple of ‘free’ mints or sweeties. As a dedicated restaurant and people-watcher I am constantly amazed by the subversive tactics used to remove food in restaurants from one plate to another. Anyone who has a mother will have been subjected to the “Go on you can eat it” which includes yours, hers as well as your brothers or sisters and even your Father’s if he’s not paying attention, with the excuse “Well, he’s a growing lad.” How about the secret napkin trick where a paper napkin or tissue is carefully removed from a handbag and then whilst everyone’s back is turned, leftovers are wrapped and bagged in seconds without anyone noticing…except me! You have paid for it, it already belongs to you, we don’t mind if you want to take it home for the dog or the cat or even a salad or sandwich for tomorrow’s lunch! If you want to eat your leftovers at home later instead of throwing it away it’s actually quite a compliment. If you want to practice people-watching you can do no better than to watch the ‘coffee people’ that regularly help themselves to the little packets of sugar which automatically come with your coffee. Whether they take sugar in their coffee or not they usually take at least one from their own cup, and yours, and their guests and if there’s a bowl on the

Do you take your leftovers home?

table, away go the sugars and the sweeteners too. But who do they really belong too? Whilst I ponder this question you must excuse the pause as I am staying in a hotel at the moment – ‘breakfast included’ - and I am trying to eat as much as possible to last me the day whilst also trying to secrete a couple of rolls and butter and a bit of cheese along with one of those cute little jars of marmalade and a bit of fruit or maybe two whilst the waiter is topping up the display…!

Phil’s Fawners Fail

The TV Round Up by

Alex Trelinski

Broadcaster and freelance journalist

N

OT CONCERNED about being locked up in the Tower of London, I must say that I found the two recent Prince Philip documentaries as riveting as talking about the price of fish with Stacey Solomon. The Duke had nothing new to say in his brief and grudging answers that he gave to Alan Titchmarsh and Fiona Bruce in their ITV and BBC specials, which made it all rather pointless. At least Bruce last week tried to be a bit more persistent, but we learnt nothing about the more controversial aspects of his life as the Royal

Consort. You can frankly get more of an insight from the wonderfully wicked Philip impression that Hugh Dennis does on the Newsreel segment of the panel show, ‘Mock The Week’. At least the new programmes were not as bad as the awful gush of fractured fawning that spewed out of Trevor McDonald’s mouth in a two-part ITV film three years ago. A basic lesson for journalists: If you can’t conduct an interview on your terms, then don’t do it as your reputation will get as soiled as a Ryan Giggs bedsheet.

Sauce-laden Comedy Gala Having the gift fairytale

Forget the BBC1 family show ‘Merlin’ which returns in the autumn. From the same team that re-wrote history with ‘The Tudors’, we have naughty fun and frolics with ‘Camelot’ which premiered on Channel Four last Saturday. It wasn’t long when bare flesh appeared courtesy of an Adonis-looking Arthur, and then we had Joseph Fiennes being a Ross Kemp look-alike in his portrayal of Merlin. It’s as intellectual as a Philip Schofield-led political interview, but based on the first two episodes, it looks like being a hoot. It’s also fun to work out the reasons you give to your kids as to why they can’t watch this particular sauce-laden fairytale!

Channel Four’s ‘Comedy Gala’ last weekend offered some good sport in spotting the edits where the mediocre acts were ruthlessly pruned down to preserve their credibility. Even the old favourites like Lee Evans and Michael McIntyre were lazy and trundled out some old routines, leaving some of the video slots as the highlights, including the unlikely pairing of Patrick Stewart and James

Corden which was very funny. The evening though had a genuinely frightening moment with the appearance of an obese shaggy Yeti which looked like Jonathan Ross. The nightmares that I suffered afterwards were horrendous, and I strongly suspect that someone will be going on a summer imagechange before hosting his debut ITV1 chatshow in the autumn.

Alan Titchmarsh was back on safer ground last week, as he fronted his first gardening show for ITV1 with the sugar-laden title of ‘Love your Garden’. I’d rather festoon myself with German beansprouts than indulge myself with green-fingered activity, but Titchmarsh has the gift of making the subject watchable, even to a back-sider like me. I fully understand why my gardening friends want to smother pictures of him with compost, as the guy is an absolute natural. Far more so than the over-rated Monty Don who has been brought back to BBC 2’s ‘Gardeners’ World’, only after Titchmarsh turned that gig down, presumably after getting a bigger cheque from his commercial paymasters.

Beyond belief A few weeks ago, BBC2 screened the first episode of ’Citizen Smith’ as a tribute to its creator, John Sullivan who had recently died. It was a wonderful vehicle for Robert Lindsay, and many years down the line, he’s back tonight with what is mercifully the start of the final series of ’My Family’. How this alleged comedy has survived for

eleven seasons is beyond belief, but has Lindsay lost his marbles, when the other day he slagged off

the BBC for getting rid of it? An excellent actor like him can surely get other work rather than relying on trash like this for a revenue stream. In complete contrast, this will be followed by the start of a full re-run of the hilarious ‘Miranda’, making its BBC1 debut. I reckon the schedulers are trying to make a mischievous point over what or what isn’t funny; something that I think will be lost on Mr.Lindsay.

Worth Dying For Book Review by

Danny Collins

READERS OF Lee Child, a US-based UK writer who moved to the USA after an abruptly curtailed career in British television, will be familiar with his hero Jack Reacher. Reacher is a 6’5” ex US military policeman who travels the States and finds trouble at every bend in the road. Reacher is tough, hard, lean and mean and he would eat Clint Eastwood, Mel Gibson, and Bruce Willis for lunch in one sitting. Worth Dying For finds Reacher up against the Duncans, a tough Nebraska trucking family that runs the county by fear. In particular, no one wants to talk about an eightyear-old girl who disappeared at the Duncan homestead 25 years ago, but that doesn’t bother Reacher. He’ll get to the truth if he has to take down every cornhusking 300lb bodyguard the Duncans can throw at him and he’ll spit them right back.

Another rip roaring Jack Reacher yarn that will keep the pages turning well into the night. Jack’s back, oh yeah, and this is too cool for school. JR rules, OK? Author: Lee Child Publisher: Bantam (paperback) Price: €11.20 ISBN: 978 0 553 82549 7

the importance of knowing and following the rules I AM at present living with a problem that has been caused by the owner of a British registered vehicle not following the rules for nearly four years, the length of time he has lived here, by changing it over to Spanish registration when he should have. The vehicle concerned is a used import from Japan in 1996, the date it was first registered with the DVLA in Britain being 1996 although the system in Japan is that after a vehicle reached the age of three years since new (first registration there) the Japanese tax system is so designed that for most people it is better to buy a new vehicle and dispose of the older one (3 years?) even though it will most likely be in very good condition. Using this information the vehicle was first registered for use (in Japan) in 1993. For some years there have been people who buy up ‘old’ Japanese vehicles and export them to countries that will accept them, especially Third World countries. If you are considering buying such a vehicle, even from a nonJapanese vehicle dealer - caveat emptor! My wife and I used to live in South Africa and they were imported there, especially ‘people carriers’ (minibuses-HI Aces) for use as taxis, but the local

Toyota agency chain periodically advertised that they will not carry spare parts for such vehicles although filters, etc. would fit. Anyway this particular vehicle, which is a people carrier with nine-seats, is valuable to the owner as he has a handicapped wife: the vehicle features a sliding side-door that has been modified for her, is of special value. I have ridden in it and it goes very well with no visible exhaust smoke. With the publicity lately of resident expats with UK-plated vehicles that should have been long ago on Spanish registration, he asked me about how to go about it. After listening to his information but before I studied the UK V5C registration documents, I suggested that as the vehicle was in very good condition that he used one of the recognised local competent services that do such work, namely a Spanish father and son team, who lived for some years in the UK so speak fluent English. They can, speaking “local Spanish” sometimes work “miracles” with the Trafico people. But they are having problems I believe, because the vehicle is now some 20 years old, provable at 17 years from the V5C information. While the engine

exhaust does not ‘smoke’, the system is not to the acceptable current EU standards plus although it has a UK registration that we would think covered it for the EU, the date it was first registered in the UK, 1996, was before the EU homolgamation testing started in 1998. The owner is getting a bit nasty with me as he is I am sure blaming me for his woes, although he admits that he has had it here four years and if he had transferred it when he arrived he would not be experiencing the current pollution problems that affect all used vehicles now. I feel sorry for him as the vehicle is very clean and looks only about 3 -4 years old and goes very well but his obvious attitude to me is a little upsetting now. Still, I have ‘broad shoulders’. But the experience now is putting me off assisting such people especially when it has cost me money, time and stress as I have made no charge or received any costs for the help. It is such a shame that he did not complete the registration transfer when he arrived. He may have to scrap it now, or sell it back to the UK. I will advise at a future date what happens. Keep safe out there; summer is coming again with the usual road traffic densities and dangers.

RTN Golf Club update The final whistle With Andy Kay

www.andykayevents.com

Dennis Jordan NORTH REGION

HI ALL, hope you have had a good practice out on the fairways and improved your game this spring, with the changing climate… We have had all sorts of seasons, sometimes in one day! Courses in the north will be a bit quieter than of late so tee times will be easier to get at required times. Costa Blanca is a great place to visit, with the golf courses and the night life in Benidorm and all the theme and water parks now open there is always something to do in between playing a round.

Murcia Golf Hound Murcia Region

WELL HOPEFULLY by the time you read this article the weather forecasters will have been proven correct and we will all have wall to wall sunshine. Such good growing weather will keep the course staff busy keeping down the grass as it tries to grow at an alarming rate. The courses will start to look at their best although through the hot summer months they need vast quantities of water which is expensive as we all know, and one of the biggest single costs faced by the golf courses. Following last week’s full page advertisement by Altorreal they have announced some exciting news for the summer because as from 15th June 2011 they will apply the price of €55 for two players and buggy EVERY DAY OF THE WEEK until 15th September 2011 for RTN members. Remember that the morning deal at Vistabella of only €78 for 2 players and buggy still applies and deal of the week is at La Finca where for only €164 you can have four players and 2 buggies.

THE MURCIAGOLFteam continued their tour of the region’s golf courses, this week playing at the La Torre Golf Resort near the village of Roldan. Once again, the team was impressedby the professionalism and service levels of the staff at this Polaris World golf course and upon arrival were greeted warmly by all members of staff. We were encouraged to warm up on the grass driving range and spacious putting green before making our way to the golf course. The team was instantly struck by the completed feeling that this golf course possesses. The surrounds to every hole have been well manicured and are very pleasing on the eye. The elliptical shaped tee boxes gave a modern edge to the course and the fairwayswere inperfect condition. The greens were a pleasure to putt on with their typical rolling undulations providing a good test of distance control. In contrast to other courses in the region, La Torre is relatively short. This makes for a refreshing change with less emphasis being placed on distance off the tee and more on accuracy. There is also room for the odd wild shot without too much penalty which makes for an enjoyable and relaxing round of golf.

Alex McLeish WHATEVER THE outcome of Aston Villa’s contract negotiations with Alex McLeish, you have to wonder why the Midlands club is so intent on making him their new manager. It will antagonise a great many of their own fans who don’t want the former Birmingham boss to take charge and it’s bound to have an effect on the relationship between the two clubs if City’s allegations that McLeish was ‘tapped up’ are to be believed. But more than that, I just wonder if he’s the right man for the job. Despite winning the Carling Cup this season, McLeish has over seen two relegations while at St Andrews and the style of football he gets his teams to play is hardly overly attractive. It’s certainly a strange call. DISAPPOINTING DAVID David Haye is a great fighter and I fully expect him to beat Wladimir Klitschko when the two meet in their heavyweight unification clash early next month. However, I can’t help but thinking that some of Haye’s pre-fight antics leave a little to be desired. It’s clear that he’s trying to get under the skin of his opponent but the release of an iPhone app which sees him decapitate an ‘East European’ fighter does neither Haye nor his advisers any credit. Meanwhile, Klitschko, who many people see as a one-dimensional and dull fighter, continues to behave with dignity and has certainly won over some new fans within the media. Haye should do his talking in the ring and put an end to his trashy and tawdry conduct. WORLD OF SPORT This week, I flew over to the UK to help out at Steve Cram’s annual golf day in aid of his charity Coco – Comrades of Children Overseas. The event attracted a fair sprinkling of celebrities including former England and Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan, England cricketers Graham Onions and Paul Collingwood plus athletes Denise Lewis, John Regis and Kris Akabusi. Also present was a broadcasting hero of mine who, some years ago, unknowingly played a part in a little bit of radio history. Back in the day when Chris Tarrant presented the Capital Radio breakfast show, he ran a competition which featured a prize of £10,000. On this particular day, a woman caller was one question away from scooping the jackpot but she was stumped when Chris asked her, “Who is the BBC’s motor racing commentator?” Wanting to help her out, he decided to give her a clue by saying “This is something that you might put in your mouth.” His thinking being Murray Walker = Murray Mint. “Oh,” she said, “Is it Dickie Davies!” I can tell you that at the age of 83, the former World of Spot presenter remains a demon golfer and a perfect gent. Also, if you’d like to know more about Steve Cram’s charity, you can go to www.coco.org.uk

It’s cheating but with a different name Fishing Maggots End Noel’s world of golf By Noel Eastwell Teaching Professional Campo de Golf El Plantio 639 730 891

THE GAME of golf is a test of both mental and physical skill. It is the only sport where you have plenty of time to think about what is coming up in a few minutes time. We all know how much thinking can go into a few minutes, massive disasters can come and go, we can win the world cup… etc. etc. Well now many readers are thinking, “Where are we going with this article?” I will answer that simply - the long handled putter. Never have I seen a more clever way of cheating. I know full well that these clubs are legal under the rules of golf but just why I will never understand. Getting the ball into the hole in as few strokes as possible is what our sport is all about. The mental challenge of that act is well known to golfers, we have all missed the simplest of putts in our time but surely the long handled putters, whether they are belly-putters or longer, take a lot of the skill and mental challenge out of the game? These things in my opinion should be banned and players should be made to rise to the challenge the sport offers. Many players have got “the yips” over the years and have gotten over them. The use of the long-handled putter is some people’s way around rising to this challenge. The number of players on the major tours using these implements has risen surprisingly in recent years with Adam Scott no less recently being seen using one. Thankfully there is a gentlemen’s agreement on tour that they will not be used when taking a drop. Sooner or later this is going to fall flat and a player will use one to take a drop that will be so beneficial it will be the difference

between winning a tournament - or losing one. How will that go down with the hierarchy, particularly if that event is a major championship? It’s time for the leaders of our sport to impose a restriction on the length of putters that is similar to what is in place for other clubs. Make the game fair for all and get these horrendous implements out of the game forever!

“Where the **** is this water coming from?” Mike Hincks, Puerto de Mazarron

SO - CARRYING on from last week’s shenanigans down in the boatyard, I thought I’d continue the story of the arrival of the tasty ‘Monterey’ power boat and its subsequent launch. Well…I’ve been concentrating on sail boats in the last few articles - let’s see what our pals in the V8 supercharged ‘zoom machine’ got up to the first morning of their new life as mariners. Actually…quite a lot! I’ll explain: The geography of the marina in Puerto de Mazarron is brilliant. From the lifting crane you have a view of all the jetties and especially the jetty where our friends, Mike & Kathy, were enjoying their first day on the Monterey. I’d finished working with my mentor Andy on the Sadler and having neglected my domestic duties for the week, spending all my days working in the boat yard, decided to call it quits and slip off home to wash my whites & smalls, (as ya do). Ahhh yes... The life of a retired rock star is such a glamorous affair! Just pressed the ‘on’ button on the Zanussi… and the old mobile phone goes off. It was Mike. “Bloody hell, mate! We’re ****ing sinking!” he shouted. Instantly I forgot about the prospect of a ‘lovely drying afternoon’, (as one does!)… and did my best impersonation of Steve McQueen in The Great Escape speeding through the highways & byways of the Port on my trusty Honda 125 scooter, trying not to look like I’d just been shot out of a cannon. (Question; Why DO they have to make crash helmets so unsightly) I arrived at the jetty where Mike & Kathy had rather a bemused look on their face. I tasted the water…it was fresh.

“What’s going on?!” I asked (not really expecting a coherent answer). “Gawd knows!” moaned Mike, looking at his dripping sponge. They’d simply filled the water tank up and next thing all hell broke loose. Their beautiful Monterey looked like Jack Sparrow’s boat. Anyway… With all reinforcements on the pier, things started to be put together. Malcolm & Ed, our chief sorter outers here in Puerto de Mazarron had a look round, as did our Mike…who happens to be a brilliant plumber. What I’m about to tell you should be a warning to prospective boat buyers everywhere: Caveat emptor. They found the problem… The previous owners had hacked off the inlet pipe for the water without telling Mike & Kathy. Mike had poured several dozens of gallons of fresh water into the hull of the boat!! You wouldn’t mind, but all Mike & Kathy had done had placed the hosepipe into the pipe which says ‘WATER’ and that’s all she wrote! The previous owners had done a remodelling of the service inlets and suchlike and simply ‘forgot’ to tell anyone. Idiots. So. All’s well that ends well and all that tosh, but when buying your next boat ask the owners one thing: ‘Have you done any remodelling?’ So Mike and Kathy are blissfully getting to grips with their new ‘zoom machine’ and it was nearly time to launch Dragonfly, the beautiful Sadler sailboat I mentioned….Do you know the saying ‘lightning never strikes twice’? …. to be continued!

For further details ring Alan Roscoe 968 570 876 or email: anglerstogether@gonuts4free.com THE VENUE for this week’s match was the Embalse de Argos at Calasparra. The water level is still very high, not allowing us to use all the old pegs. The fishing again this week was poor, in terms of the weights that normally win matches here. Still, at this time of the year, the pegs that are producing are the deep water pegs…? Although the day before there had been some heavy rainfall, we were lucky with the day’s weather as we had no rain, but as said before, we paid for that with the fishing. 1st Clive (Golf no more) Cleghorn, fishing the pole using tares with 19.74 kilos 2nd Bill (The Master) Reade, fishing the pole using paste with 18.02 kilos 3rd Dave (Yours Truly) Hoare, fishing the pole using paste with 15.28 kilos Further to last weeks super injunction, the angler still has it in place and the name will not be divulged even on twitter. ABBEY ANGLING RESULTS supplied by Terry Screen This week we travelled to Argos Embalsa for the 9th and penultimate round of the Spring League on the 7th June 2011. Once again they have had a lot of heavy rain by the look of it, as the water levels are higher than I have seen them in the nine years I have fished in Spain. This in turn is keeping the water temperatures low and also the water is clear with little algae bloom. On this water fish always seem to feed better when the water is coloured: at the moment with the high water out of the nine pegs on the match stretch only four are fishable. Best baits on the day were paste and

corn. 1st Lenny (Ex cultural attache) Bolton with 29.840kg on pole with paste 2nd Stan (The Man) Roberts with 27.500kg with the pole up in the water for Barbel using hemp 3rd Terry (Swing ‘Em) Screen with 15.040kg on the pole with paste All details are available from the Match Secretary Terry Screen on 96 532 8368 Anglers Together ANGLERS TOGETHER was formed to introduce and encourage anglers of all abilities to meet up and get together to fish, either sea or freshwater. Seve golf Competition we ask readers to answer the following questions about Seve’s career:

THE ICONIC Severiano Ballesteros left a legacy of fantastic golf courses all over the World: his philosophy in designing a golf course was that the golfer should have to use all the clubs in his bag during the eighteen holes of the round. In memory of Seve, RTN and Indigo Car Hire have arranged for two of our readers to enjoy one of his creations at La Peraleja Golf Club in Murcia. The fantastic prize is a round of golf for two including buggy at this fantastic venue on a day of your choice. To have a chance to win this fantastic prize

1. In which year did Seve first win The Open Championship? 2. In which year did Seve first win The US Masters? 3. What is the name of Seve’s course design company? Answers should be sent to: golf@roundtownnews.com marked ‘Seve Competition’ before 21st June. All correct entries will be placed into a draw with the winner picked at random.
