SHOCKING NEW allegations have been made against a Costa Blanca animal shelter over the use of an outlawed drug when dogs are put to sleep.

The accusations have been lodged with SEPRONA – the Guardia Civil wing responsible for the environment and animal welfare – and are a further attack on conditions and managing regime at Benidorm’s Sociedad Protectora de Animales y Platas de Benidorm.

The ‘denuncias’ accuse the shelter of using the muscle paralyser Anetecine independently to euthanize dogs and maintain animals were put down in the presence of others, another prohibited practice.

It is claimed that on repeated occasions the amount of the controversial drug administered was not enough to kill the animal outright or not injected directly into a vein.

And workers discovered dogs were still alive before their bodies were placed in an incinerator – requiring a second dose of the medication.

Animal lovers and volunteer workers past and present have launched a campaign calling for the current directors of the shelter to resign and be prosecuted.

Both the shelter’s committee and the volunteers are raising petitions demanding town hall intervention.

The shelter is home to some 300 dogs, cats, and various other animals and the initial 31 allegations made by campaigners were headline news last month.

DENIAL The directors continue to deny all the accusations made against them and say they have successfully rescued animals from across the Marina Baja for 40 years.

Campaigners say the charity is supported with grants from both Benidorm and Villajoyosa Town Halls and are hoping a public court case or inquiry will bring out the truth of what has happened over the years.

RTN was told the use of Anetecine as a sole drug for euthanasia had been illegal in Spain since 2002 under a Royal Decree.

“It is illegal because it is very painful and causes death by asphyxia,” said one protester. “The animals remain conscious until death – and it must be a very painful death.

There are also complaints that piles of bodies were stacked up in the heat awaiting the incinerator being fired up because there was no refrigeration room.

An elderly woman – who lost her job in 2007 – maintains in an official statement that Anetecine was still being commonly used when she left.

PROTEST “She claims in her denuncia that her husband had to actually stop the incinerator because some of the animals going in were not dead – they had not been given enough of this banned drug,” said a former volunteer organising the protest.

“And she says the drug was still being used when she left the shelter – five years after it was banned.”

The volunteer added: “I just despair of Spain. This is an absolute disgrace yet we call ourselves a caring modern European country. In India they have stricter laws insuring compassion for animals.”

The shelter accuses the organisers of the protest as being “troublemakers” and deliberately spreading “falsehoods” about an organisation that has carried out “excellent work”.

It also maintains photographs could be from “anywhere”, but admitted dogs could arrive at the shelter in a bad condition, some needing to be put to sleep.

The charity said it wanted to continue its work with the same “professionalism” it had undertaken for years and while it had carried out work demanded by a SEPRONA inspection but really needed a new modern facility.

Support White Ribbon Day at WIBC Expo WHITE RIBBON Day is an international festival to combat and raise awareness of domestic abuse worldwide. And the ‘Women In Business Club’ provides invaluable aid to victims of domestic violence in Spain.

In its seven-year history, WIBC has raised money through donations from members, supporters and through twice-yearly expos. This year, the WIBC has scheduled two fund-raising events in November with money raised going directly to the charity to aid abused women.

WIBC helps fund refuges for women and their children made homeless after fleeing abusive partners, working hands-on supplying basics like beds, mattresses and cots, underwear, nappies and sanitary wear.

And for these traumatised families, far away from their homes and familiar surroundings, WIBC aims to provide toys, TVs and also computers to enable older children to maintain their schoolwork.

Once the women feel confident enough to cope with the outside world and leave the refuge, WIBC gives them a starter pack consisting of essential household goods the rest of us take for granted.

However, there are several young women currently in the refuges who are about to give birth, so baby clothes and nappies are urgently needed: donations can be made at the November expos and at WIBC’s monthly meetings in Javea, Calpe or Albir.

by Jack Troughton NUEVA JAVEA – the international independent party – is in meltdown following failure at the polls in the May elections and its two councillors’ decision to go it alone.

Described by one of the rebels as a “dead party”, Nueva Javea is to hold an Emergency General Meeting on 25th November in a bid to rebuild.

The party went into the election full of confidence with the then General Secretary Juan Planelles as head of its list of candidates, Paco Catala as number two, and President Ana Vasbinder in third position.

However, Nueva Javea only received 900 votes and only Councillors Planelles and Catala were returned to the town hall. Four years earlier the party won four seats.

Univited to join Mayor Jose Chulvi’s governing alliance, the two councillors nonetheless pledged the PSOE politi-

cian their support – sparking the anger of their own party faithful.

And the pair officially resigned the party whip on 26th October, citing “insurmountable differences” with the party board of directors as the reason for a decision to form a Grupo Mixto.

In a letter to members leaked to RTN, new General Secretary Ricardo Marquez admitted: “During the months since the municipal elections – at which we suffered a major setback that can be considered as electoral failure – we have managed to keep our party out of the media.”

FAILURE But he said subsequent events had been “difficult” and accused the two councillors of not attempting to form natural alliances that could have seen the party in government and failing to take on the board’s decisions.

“Their blatant disrespect and disregard for the opinions of the legitimate representatives of the party, lead on 20th

June to the replacement as General Secretary of Juan Planelles by myself. I was appointed by the unanimous vote of the 10 members of the board present.”

However, Mr Marquez said it was the elected councillor and not the party that “owns” the town hall seat and the party could not over-rule decisions and appointments the councillors made.

“This series of events caused deep unease and distaste amongst board members as being the effective isolation of our elected representatives after all the efforts, dedication and enthusiasm that had obtained for them the positions they now occupy,” he added.

He admitted the situation had further provoked members to stop active participation and prompted the call for an EGM to reorganise and rebuild trust.

“Those who betray the trust and loyalty of their comrades should be ashamed. The rest of us can and must overcome adversity and try to respond positively to those who trusted us.”

STARTING THIS week, doctors are obliged to prescribe the cheapest version of drugs for the patients on their lists with pharmacists now dispensing generic drugs in place of those stipulated on prescriptions in an effort by the Ministry of Health to trim €2,000 million from the present pharmaceuticals bill. However, to sweeten the pill, doctors may still prescribe the medication they consider the most appropriate for patients long accustomed to a particular drug or if there is a therapeutic requirement and patients may opt to pay the difference between the generic drug and the preferred version. In recent weeks laboratories have also reduced prices of certain medicines to bring costs more in line with generic preparations. Alicante pharmacists have warned that the move could result in a reduction in profits of up to 8%. Meanwhile, the College of Pharmacists of Alicante continues to negotiate ‘in extremis’ with several banks for credit to keep them going until January when Healthcare is expected to pay monies owed.

Team effort saves swimmer at San Juan

EMERGENCY SERVICES on Sunday were able to save the life of a swimmer recovered from the sea at around 2pm. Bystanders reported that the victim, a man aged around 30, was in difficulties about 200 metres from the beach in the sea off Cabo de las Huertas, Alicante. He was brought to the shore by other swimmers but suffered cardiac arrest. He was revived by SAMU staff and transferred to the Hospital de San Juan with a weak pulse. He remains in intensive care.

by Jack Troughton THE JEWEL of the Costa Blanca is to receive a long-awaited refurbishment as a ‘top priority’ before next year’s summer season under Valencia’s Plan Confianza.

Javea’s Arenal Beach is a popular tourist destination but has suffered years of neglect and politicians and businessmen have constantly called for new investment in a key holiday area to boost the economy and create jobs.

The project is already out to tender and the government of Valencia’s contracting committee is expected to award the work to the successful candidate when it meets next month.

Mayor Jose Chulvi and his deputy Oscar Anton travelled to Valencia to visit the Department of Infrastructure concerned the

work could be delayed and affect the summer tourist season.

IMMEDIATE They were told the contract would be awarded immediately at next month’s meeting and the work scheduled for completion within four months – and ahead of the season.

Mr Chulvi said they were convinced Valencia had given the project “top priority as the government had recognised the Arenal’s key role in the overall tourist image of the Valencian Community.”

He also thanked the government for its “concern and understanding of the needs of our municipality.”

Javea Town Hall has offered its full co-operation in helping the work run smoothly, for example lending the contractor council land to store machinery and materials.

Funeral planning

I REALISE that many English people find it extremely difficult to talk about their own death and that of their loved ones.

Whilst living in Spain, many are experiencing funerals of friends and family and quickly understand why a funeral plan is vital. The extra unnecessary stress that it places on the family is very unpleasant and just having to find approximately 4,000€ immediately is daunting.

In the UK, the majority of deaths occur in a safe environment, for example, a hospital. This means all or most of the arrangements will be carried out by the hospital management, taking personal wishes into consideration. This obviously takes away a certain amount of the stress in having to organise all the funeral arrangements, death certificate registration and payment. At least in your home country you have no problem with the language, whilst in Spain you probably will.

The culture is vastly different here with great pressure placed on you to carry out the funeral within 24 hours. I realise that in many of the towns there are often very new and sophisticated funeral parlours.

However, there is still pressure placed on the family, and old rules will still apply: there can also be trouble with payment as bank accounts are often frozen, adding immense stress to an already fraught time.

Once again it comes back to dealing with reality or pretending to ourselves that it will be alright and I will cope. I wonder why people often say to me: “I am not going to even think about my own death; if and when it happens to me my partner will handle all the

arrangements then.” Or the husband comes in with: “What do I care? I will be out of it and the wife can handle it.” Oh dear, this statement takes no consideration of the facts. A number of times the lady of the house is not involved in the day to day running of the overall financial upkeep, I also appreciate that there are ladies who, for one reason and another, do not look after the finances in any way.

The question I then ask is as follows. “How is your lady expected to handle one of the most dreadful days in her life with situations she has never gone through before, in a foreign country with a different culture and language?” I personally feel this question also applies to the partner. Why make it so much harder to go through? Therefore, isn’t it better to take an hour out of your life and plan for that inevitable day? Great planning is carried out for our births, wedding anniversaries; birthday’s and holidays but not, in many cases, our farewell!

There are two ways you can do this planning, either by taking out an insurance policy or a pre-paid plan.

This can now be paid over a period of years with no interest added. It really is that simple, plus of course funeral costs are increasing and in ten years could be twice what it is already.

I know this subject is unpleasant; we would like to think we will go on and on, but we won’t - much better then to deal with reality. From where I sit, having lost my husband in an accident in our home, to have

had the full benefit of a funeral plan, (they were not available then) it would have saved me so much stress and pressure, plus my bank account would have been a few thousand Euros better off. This has to be a very loving and wise way to plan part of your family’s future. With only one phone call to make, the funeral Directors will assist with all the arrangements including registration of the death.

by Jack Troughton BRITISH EXPATS were urged to use a “wealth of information” on official websites to answer questions about living in Spain.

The British Consulate Team visited the Jalon Valley to tell residents about the services on offer and encourage them to glean up to date facts from its website ukinspain.fco. gov.uk and residenteseuropeos.com, run by the Diputacion de Alicante.

Around 150 expats attended the meeting in Alcalali for the open day organised by the town hall and Jalon Valley HELP and an area where British citizens frequently make up over 50 percent of municipal populations.

Martyn Standing, of the Pensions, Benefit and Healthcare team attached to the Alicante consulate, was able to explain people’s rights regarding pensions and benefits in Spain – starring with a short

quiz to see what people knew and correct common misconceptions.

Consul Paul Rodwell encouraged people to use official sources to answer questions.

“In Alicante, we are fortunate to have the Residentes Europeos department, which has taken the time to create information leaflets on issues like tax, healthcare, and voting.

“Anyone can apply for copies through its website. Additionally, the Embassy has information about living in Spain and UK issues on its own website and is making increasing use of its Facebook and Twitter sites to keep Brits informed.”

He also underline the importance of registering on the town hall ‘padron’ as a resident in order to access local services and help integration.

The team also visited Teulada to make a presentation to the U3A and to meet the Mayor and members of the council.

Thriller night GHOULS GHOSTS and Zombies brought a touch of Thriller to the streets of Benitachell on Friday night as youngsters and parents enjoyed a Halloween party. The town band led a parade of more than 120 children through the village before the youngsters returned to Benitachell Art Centre for party food and drink – joined by over 80 adults – all enjoying the atmosphere in the spookily decorated hall.

Javea a new favourite haunt for Minke whales JAVEA HAS become a hot spot for whale-watchers, with no less than eleven magnificent Minke whales sighted off the Cape of San Antonio between May and October of this year.

Experts say the whales, which pass through these waters before heading to the Strait of Gibraltar, are usually more frequent between August and September. This year they have been seen only half a mile from the coast which is unusual. Specifically, the large Fin Whale, which can measure between 16 and 24 meters - was seen less than half a mile from the coast – normally they are seen around twenty to thirty miles offshore. Pilot whales and dolphins have also been spotted in the Bay of Javea.

Cost effective energy savings in Pilar de la Horadada

by Louise Clarke THE TOWN Hall of Pilar de la Horadada has been looking at how it can save money during these times of economic uncertainty and as a result, municipal workmen have spent the last week shutting down more than 20% of the municipality’s street lamps in areas with no homes. As a result of the exercise, it is estimated that the municipality will save more than 180,000€ per year in electricity bills. More than 1,300 street lamps are affected and the supply to more than 50% of the remaining street lamps has also been reduced using new equipment to allow 35% less energy consumption.

The cost saving initiative was implemented by Pilar Councillor for Infrastructure, Ivan Romero, who told RTN: “There is a need to lower municipal spending as we are in a very bad economic situation and we can not afford to spend one million euros every year in lighting alone.”

UNDERSTANDING In addition to street lighting, municipal facilities will also reduce their energy consumption meaning that savings of around 35% will be applicable. This again will be as a result of new electrical equipment designed to reduce the amount of energy consumed. Romero added: “The Municipality’s management has to go in this direction, not only due to the austerity measures but we also must closely monitor municipal spending, so that it does not affect all our citizens.”

By Jan Gamm ONE OF the legacies of the ‘relaxed’ attitude to planning permission during the construction boom has led to Alicante’s being at high risk of flooding. Not only private developments but also road and rail infrastructure is deemed to have been built on soggy ground.

An unacceptable 7.5% of the provinces’ territory is susceptible to flood with a serious risk to human life, as was seen in the La Cala Finestrat tragedy two weeks ago when British pensioners Kenneth and Mary Hall lost their lives, washed away by a wall of water while shopping at the local market. It later emerged that the scene of the disaster was known to be at risk of flood.

According to a report on the risk of flooding by the Institute of Geography at the University of Alicante, 90% of the streets in the city of Alicante and the rest of the municipalities of the province are without adequate drainage to evacuate water in the case of a flood, resulting in serious flooding in low level shops, offices, basements and garages.

Councils that ‘look the other way’; ineffective fines; and the indolence of an administration that only acts when a disaster happens have produced one of the highest flood risks in Spain in the Alicante region, where residents shudder at the sound of thunder, fearing for the safety of their cars parked in underground garages, their valuables and even their lives.

And many building projects discovered to be at risk of flood were halted halfway through and stand abandoned, constituting a further risk of dangerous debris that could be washed away in the sometimes vicious storms now becoming common on the Costa Blanca.

Sailors set for Cape Town

by Louise Clarke THE OFFICIAL start of the Volvo Ocean Race takes place tomorrow as the six teams prepare to head out to Cape Town in South Africa.

The Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing team delivered an early blow to their rivals after picking up the first points of the 2011-2012 Race with a comprehensive win in last week’s inaugural in-port race in Alicante. The crew, led by British skipper and double Olympic silver medallist, Ian Walker, romped home with a massive 14-minute lead over their closest rivals, PUMA Ocean Racing powered by BERG. CAMPER with Emirates Team New Zealand came in third, whilst Team Sanya edged the Groupama sailing team for fourth, with the Spanish Team Telefónica coming home sixth.

CRUCIAL Ian Walker was delighted with his team’s victory. He told RTN: “It’s a great win, I feel fantastic!” He added: “It’s a great start for the Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing team. Like I said before we left the dock, whoever won today’s race can go home with a spring in their step

and look forward to the challenge ahead.”

The in-port race marked the start of the epic 39,000 nautical mile round-the-World race, tipped to be the most hotly contested edition in the event’s 38-year history. And after opening their account with a crucial win, Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing will go into the first offshore leg with a maximum six points and a psychological advantage.

GREAT VIEW Crowds for last week’s event were huge, despite the strong winds and pelting rain that greeted the teams as they left the dock in Alicante, but by the time the start gun fired at 2pm, the weather had cleared and spectators got a great view of the action from the Volvo Ocean Race Village.

The Race Village officially closes after the start of the race tomorrow, but there is still time to get down there and experience a great venue with lots of things to see and do.

The six teams set off from Alicante bound for Cape Town at 2pm tomorrow (Saturday) and it is expected that the leg will take around 21 days to complete.

Denia to charge 1,000€ to wed at the castle COUPLES MAY now say “I do” at the historic Denia Castle for a fee of 1,000€. In an attempt to pull some cash into the coffers the local council have agreed to open the castle for wedding ceremonies for couples that fancy a fairy tale theme.

And they have also decided to cash in on weekend ceremonies at the local town hall office where a civil service in conducted during the week at 100€ - from now on the same service will cost double on weekends.

The race tracker provides the latest data including exact positions, boat speed, direction and weather conditions, so you can stay informed on the race no matter where in the world you are or what you are doing. Through the app, which also has an iPad version, fans can stay tuned in to all the action and it can be downloaded from iTunes.

Arrested for defrauding 200,000€ using ‘Nigerian letters’ THE GUARDIA Civil in Santa Pola has arrested a 43-year-old man accused of scamming nearly 200,000€ from around 13 people in Belgium, Holland, USA, Romania, Austria and Germany, using ‘Nigerian letters’. Information received last June via Europol indicated that a Belgian national had been the victim of a scam of more than 28,800€ by making the victim he’d won a substantial amount through social networks, in this case 517,000€. To claim the cash a set amount is required on deposit via bank transfer to the fraudster under a false identity. Agents have confiscated up to 3,000€ in cash, a mobile, several laptops, bank cards that evidence the movement of more than 116,000€ in revenue since last January and four false passports. The suspect, of Nigerian origin, is accused of the alleged crimes of embezzlement, fraud, theft and forgery. Investigations are on-going.

Unemployed offered lifeline Digging for a new life

by Jan Gamm A GROUP of unemployed people have been offered a chance to improve their lives through an entrepreneurial scheme under the auspices of the Benidorm City Council.

An old and abandoned country house with substantial land near the N332 near Benidorm has been offered to the group as an organic farming project.

The group will farm aubergines, peppers, green beans and tomatoes with the produce shared and also marketed to those preferring their food freshly picked.

Many of the city’s unemployed that reach the end of their benefit entitlement are forced to rummage for food in supermarket

garbage bins late at night. A spokesman for the group said: “It is better to plant and harvest your crops than to find food in garbage bins, so we are doing this to show that you can live and survive in a healthy and dignified way.�

ECO-FRIENDLY The project is being managed in an ecofriendly environment, conserving water and using windmills to produce power. So far, however, the house remains in poor condition and the group is reluctant to make repairs until the project has achieved some success.

It is hoped that the project could result in the formation of co-operatives to help relieve unemployment on a large scale.

The Superior Council of Colleges of Architects of Spain recognised the quality of the work, scored by a jury that included, among others, Toribio Alfonso (Dean of the College of Architects of Asturias); Idoia Camiruaga (Architect and technique of the Ministry of Development); Alfonso Munoz (Deputy Director of the Institute of Cultural Heritage of Spain’s Ministry of Culture); Stephen Belmonte (Dean of the College of Architects of Castilla La Mancha) and architects Ramon Sanabria Boix and Leopoldo Uría Iglesias. The project was chosen from a shortlist of 30 works selected by the Commission from a total of 114 participants. The award recognises “the new interpretation of public space, especially the difficult encounter between the city and the sea, between the artificial and natural, through a deliberate formalisation full of references and allusions.”

Alicante Airport Theft

by Louise Clarke RTN was contacted earlier this week by a reader who had her bag stolen whilst she waited by her car at the Pick Up Zone in Alicante Airport. The lady was ‘distracted’ by one man who questioned her about a set of keys, whilst another man opened her car door, reached over to the other side of the car and grabbed her bag. She told RTN: “Both men were Spanish and they kept walking back and forth in front of the car.

They were looking around as if they were waiting for someone and then they tried to get into conversation with me about a set of keys that they had.

“They gave me the keys and then before I knew it, they walked away. I thought that it was odd but it was only when I went to get my phone, which was in my bag, did

I realise that it had gone. They had just calmly walked away.”

The lady and her husband reported the incident to the Alicante Airport police, but they said that there wasn’t really anything that they could do and there were insufficient members of staff to launch an investigation.

The lady, who thankfully didn’t have any cards with her but did have nearly €100 in cash, gave the keys, which she still had in her possession, to the officer and left. She concluded: “I just want people to be made aware that these people are operating at the airport and to be extra vigilant and also if someone has had their bag stolen in a similar fashion at the airport and have lost their keys as a result, it is possible that their keys are maybe the ones given to me and are now with the Alicante Airport police.”

Dying is an expensive business

by Jan Gamm FUNERAL SERVICE companies in Spain are feeling the pinch in the economic crisis and are exploring a number of cost-cutting alternatives to traditional funeral services and accessories in an attempt to attract custom.

Communities where the most deaths occur are the Asturias; Madrid; Valencia and Catalonia, with the least deaths in Melilla and the Canary Islands.

DIGI-DEATH Funeral homes are now offering innovative services such as ‘ecological’ funerals that include newspaper accounts of a brief ceremony and ‘digital memory management’ where the funeral services include the closure of the deceased’s user accounts online, deleting them from active networks! There are now also a range of biodegradable products available such as soluble shrouds and coffins and a number of other low-key

and low-cost options. Costs of funeral services are on average between 1,800€ and 2,000€, according to PANASEF, whose president believes that cost levels are “virtually unchanged” since 2010.

MADRID And Madrid is still the most expensive community to die in, with around 3,700€ the average cost of a funeral (and 15% more expensive than in 2010) and 3,200€ for a cremation, according to a study by the Confederation of Consumers and Users (CECU) of nine funeral homes in the area.

The average cost consists of the traditional burial and rent a niche for ten years, exceeding 1,100€ on average; a coffin at approximately 775€; the wake at around 620€ and the hire of a hearse at 532€ along with incidentals that can sometimes top 4,000€.

For ex-pats, the most popular method of dealing with traditional funeral expenses is through funeral insurance.

White knight enters cancer battle

by Jack Troughton A “WONDERFUL” miracle machine has arrived on the Costa Blanca to play a key and unique role in the ongoing fight against cancer in Spain. The 300,000€ white knight has been donated to Denia Hospital’s Oncology Department and scientists from Valencia and Alicante universities will use it for essential research. And the state-of-the-art sequencing machine is capable of saving lives through its ability to detect cancer from a DNA sample and diagnose the correct medication. The Cancer Care Centre Javea has established the foundation ECMOR – the English Cathedra of Modern Oncology Research – and has raised the first 120,000€ to fund the purchase the equipment and undertaken the commitment of four annual payments of between 20,000€ and 30,000€ to complete the payment and to maintain it.

This week Cancer Care’s Treasurer Terry Saville said the charity had raised the money to launch the foundation at Denia. He said from a DNA sample the machine could “diagnose a specific tumour, where it is in the body, and most importantly, diagnose which drug is needed to attack the specific cancer.”

Terry said the official unveiling of the equipment should have taken place last week but the University of Alicante, a “major” research facility wanted to be included under the ECMOR umbrella.

“This means at the laboratory in Denia, once the tumour is identified and the medication arranged that information will go to Alicante to continue research into the future advancement of new drugs and techniques.”

Terry added Denia was the first centre of its kind in Spain “which is something fantastic.” He said: “ECMOR has also brought together the heads of universities in Valencia and Alicante, who we are told have never spoken before but have now come together.”

No sympathy from them

AS A follow up to your recent article by Julie Day in relation to investments with the Banco Guipuzcuano, I would like to provide an update on my particular case.

I contacted CNMV in Madrid via my lawyer outlining my complaint against the bank. Six months later I received response with the conclusion that I was not made fully aware of the risk involved in such an investment and was advised that the bank should reimburse the funds initially invested.

This was presented to the Solbank branch in Torrevieja that took over Banco Guipuzcuano.

The advice from CNMV was overruled and I have now lost in the region of 50,000€. My wife has been recovering over the past six months from breast cancer and I asked the Solbank to take a sympathetic view as I needed these funds to continue on-going treatment to keep the cancer at bay. Again this was declined.

My last option is to issue a Denuncia through my lawyer: I cannot afford this option as the process takes a long time. I will be closing my accounts with Solbank and will certainly not recommend the bank to any of my friends in Spain.

How can that be fair?

WHY DO I, living on an urbanisation, 12 km from the coast, pay so much more IBI than a person living in a nearby village?

The services for which this tax is collected are available to everyone. Someone said it is the size of the property and land- but many houses in the village are bigger and on larger plots of land!

Someone else said it is because I have ‘more facilities’ such as: lights - well, ours have been turned off for a few years - they are on the main road. It is dangerous and burglaries have increased. Shops- the shopping complex has only appeared in the last few years, and I have been paying since 2004. There are many bars and two over-priced supermarkets.

Bus service- yes, there is an infrequent bus that stops on the outskirts but does not enter the various sectors, meaning that people have either to face a long walk, take a taxi or take a tourist train to catch

it. Health centre: yes - after nine years of living here! Roads - some here are in a state of disrepair, potholes, uneven, not maintained… And to cap it all, we do not even have ‘certificates of habitation’, yet the council is only too glad to take our money!

In the village there are street lights; decent roads; a bus running through the village; a health centre; supermarket; school etc. “Ah yes,” said another person, “some houses in the village are not connected to mains sewerage and do not have proper roads or streetlights.” From what I’ve seen and having spoken to a resident, most have all these services.

Is it not time for the council to revise the IBI and make it fairer? They are always complaining that they do not have enough money. Do the sums - I pay 365€ - my friend pays 34€! How can that be fair?

What can be done about this? all they get I AM awake at 4.50am, unable to sleep once again because of the noisy people who have left an already closed bar at 3.30am. Every weekend we are unable to get a peaceful night’s sleep because the bar closes so late in the morning and the customers do not go home immediately. If it is raining, they stand under our outside covered entrance to our apartment building talking very loudly and they leave their empty bottles on our ledges or in our box for leaflets. The men also have a tendency to urinate in the garage entrance!

The noise has been reported to the police and to our community administrator but still we must listen to this racket.

There are also times in the year when the bar is opened until 6am! Why is a bar allowed to be in a residential area? Are we not entitled to a peaceful night’s sleep? And what can be done about this?

I CAN sympathise with the Mercadona customer in the latest RTN, and have to say that I have met this arrogant, ignorant attitude in many establishments in Spain.

Perhaps one day these people will regard the customer as someone who ultimately pays their wages but with 20% unemployment and shops closing all over the place, that penny hasn’t dropped yet: they deserve all they get.

Hardly good role models HARDLY A day goes by where we read about gang culture and the effects on lives back in the UK. It seems it has spread into our sport. The latest John Terry incident, reports of racial abuse from the England captain, yet again must throw doubt on his ability to lead his club team let along his country! No doubt the FA will turn a deaf ear to please the England team management. Who is JT relying on to get him out of his latest mess? The reliable and honest Mr Ashley Cole! Neither are good role models for our kids, or good advertisements for football and England.

If it looks to good to be true.....

IT WAS with some interest that I read your article ‘There is no such thing as a free lunch’ by Louise Clarke in your issue 628. I also was ‘invited’ to a day out by this company and Louise Clarke’s description of the start of the day was fairly accurate. However, when we were shown a property that OI said was worth about €200,000, alarm bells started ringing. These properties might have been worth that in the good times but not today.

We were given the figures at the office as to what our 1/17th ‘investment’ was and then did a simple multiplication of 17 times the ‘investment’ - it showed that the €200,000 property was costing over €400,000! It was at this stage we ‘walked’.

Whilst I do not want to belie those people who ‘invested’ in this scam I wonder where their brains were on the day.

The old adage of ‘if it looks too good to be true then it is’ comes to mind. Surely before handing over any money to a stranger one should take time to think and investigate?

If you do not do these simple steps then maybe you deserve to get scammed. We all know that there are many conmen out there and they also speak English as well as Spanish. Regarding the article it seemed to stop abruptly and did not inform the reader as to what has happened to the individuals who were running the scam.

Two tariffs or not two tariffs that is the question Saving money on electricity is something we would all like to do. There are several effective options and one of them is the dual tariff system. You may remember something similar called Economy 7.

Keeping abreast of times

by Jack Troughton OCTOBER WAS breast cancer awareness month and once again the MABS Cancer Support group marked the occasion with special ‘boobie cakes’.

This year cook Annie Harding designed and baked pink cakes sporting icing bras for the charity’s monthly coffee morning at its Sol Park centre in Moraira – the event actually being staged in the afternoon as a one-off!

Annie also baked lemon meringue and chocolate and banana flavoured cakes to give guests a choice. The cakes sold at 1.50€ each or four cakes for 5€ in a box with all proceeds going to charity funds.

And Jalon Valley HELP’s President Rhonda Ryan was at the event to present MABS counterpart Jacqui Phillips MBE with a cheque for more than 1,000€.

Last month HELP raised over 2,000€ in a special ‘Pink Week’ and a special fund-raising effort to help local cancer charities.

Rhonda told RTN: “We decided to divide the money between two cancer charities, MABS and the children’s charity ASPANION. “MABS is a local charity that does so much work in our area which we are all very grateful for and the committee decided it was the obvious choice as the adult charity, with ASPANION for the children.

We decided not to divide the money further so it could make a very real difference.”

Sad loss of Gypsy Lady

by Patricia Thompson THE EASY Horse Care Rescue Centre would like to inform its many visitors and supporters of the sad loss of Gypsy Lady on Friday 21st October. Many of you will remember Gypsy Lady as the horse that was free to roam; meeting and greeting visitors, joining in with the horse tours, and spending her days with the children of the Pony Club.

Gypsy Lady came to the centre in October 2010, just two days after another horse, Star Chance, sadly died. Gypsy immediately stepped into Chance’s role in every way, even having a similar appearance, making it seem that Chance had never left. Incredibly, Gypsy passed away exactly two days after the first anniversary of Chance’s death.

IN THE PP’s manifesto presented on Tuesday in readiness for the 20th November General Election the Partido Popular leader, Mariano Rajoy, promised that the party would not negotiate with ETA, undertaking instead to promote the recognition and memory of the victims of terrorist attacks.

Elche police were so distressed on discovering her that they turned to Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre in fear she was soon to starve to death. Gypsy Lady had a whole year at the Rescue Centre, knowing the feeling of being cared for and truly loved, and showed affection and gratitude in return.

Treading the boards Search for a

happy ending

by Jack Troughton DELIGHTED TEENAGER George Parker has won a 2,500€ scholarship from a Costa Blanca charity enabling him to study for an A-Level in drama.

George, who lives in Benidoleig, was unable to follow his dream through school – where the course is not available and so applied to the EKA – the European Kids Association – which aims to help youngsters achieve their goals.

George said: “I really wanted to study drama and the A-Level was not being offered at my school. At one point it seemed my only option was to go back to the UK but as I was still studying here in Spain that would not have been possible.

“When EKA heard of my plight, the charity asked drama teacher Mike Martin to come to the rescue and the drama course was started.”

The charity has funded two thirds of the course and George is raising the balance himself. “I also play in a band and want to study music, so maybe I will put on a few shows to help fund the remainder.”

EKA’s Laura Staton said George had a lot of enthusiasm and a positive attitude. “This is why we are offering him support with this course – there is another scholarship available, so if you are a keen drama student living in the Costa Blanca and would be interested in getting assistance, contact the charity.”

The annual party thrown by Teulada Moraira Lions Club was once again a howling success and there was plenty going bump far into the night.

The centre of Moraira was packed for fun and games with a bouncy castle face painting, doughnut bobbing and a fancy dress competition.

And Lions Club vice-president Peter Johnson said: “The standard of the costumes – including those worn by Lions – was terrific and it was a shame that all the children couldn’t win.

“The revellers were treated to some great fun and a lively disco kept things moving. The generous donations we received were much appreciated, and everyone went home in great spirits. We are looking forward to doing it again next year.”

by Jack Troughton THREE MARINA Alta charities and their hard working volunteers were honoured at a special town hall ceremony in recognition of their dedicated service to the community.

The Mayor of Javea, Jose Chulvi presented each with plaques to acknowledge years of commitment and fund raising by the Cancer Care Centre, The Original Charity Shop and Library and The Roundabout Charity Shop.

In front of volunteers and committee members last Friday, charity Presidents Irene Ellis MBE of the Cancer Care Centre, Georgie Harvey of the Original Charity Shop and Library, and Gill Rose of The Roundabout Charity Shop collected the awards.

The Mayor, accompanied by Oscar Anton, Councillor for resident Relations, and Councillor for Social Services Tere Bisquert, said: “On behalf of the town council and the citizens of Javea, I would like to warmly welcome you and thank you for giving me the opportunity to express our appreciation and recognition of the excellent work and selfless dedication throughout many years by the charity shops of Javea.

“Your volunteers have given their time week after week to

help the less fortunate members of our society both in Javea and the surrounding area.”

The money raised through the shops – staffed largely by expats - is channelled into charitable organisations and to improve health care throughout the area.

Cancer Care, with around 62 active volunteers, has been active since 1998, and has helped organisations and individuals fighting cancer, as well as funding research. To date, it has raised more than 700,000€. Founded 40 years ago, the Original Charity Shop and Library has around 70 volunteers and supports a number of beneficiaries with donations, including the Asilo Hermanos Cholbi in Javea; the Raquel Paya School for handicapped children in Denia; the Preventorio in Gandia; the Franciscan Refuge in Palma de Gandia; the Centro del Dia del Convento de Xabia and the Fontilles Hospital. It has also responded to international disasters.

The Roundabout Charity Shop has a team of about 40 volunteers and has supported community projects since the seventies. It started out helping fund the Red Cross but currently backs the handicapped association Amigos de los Minusvalidos; HELP; EMAUS; old people’s residence Asilo Hermanos Cholbi and other good causes.

Remembrance Service 2011

The BEM was dumped by John Major’s government back in 1992. However, during the recent Australian Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, the current Prime Minister announced that the BEM will once again be issued, starting next year during the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Okay, here’s the history: “The Medal of the Order of the British Empire for Meritorious Service, usually known as the British Empire Medal (BEM), is a British medal awarded for meritorious civil or military service worthy of recognition by the Crown. Recipients are entitled to use the post-nominal letters ‘BEM’, and it is divided into military and civil divisions in a simi-

lar way to the Order of the British Empire itself. While recipients are not technically counted as members of the Order, these medals are nevertheless affiliated with it.” And, my granddad had one...

Back in 1975, that’s even before the first Status Quo greatest hits album, it was thought by those in the know that as my granddad had worked for the same firm for 72 years they ought to mark this occasion in some way - and so it came to pass that he was presented with the aforementioned BEM. From that day hence he would be known to the world as Danny Watts BEM. “I don’t think I’ll wear it to work,” he quipped, at the time.

Danny started working for the Southern Publishing Company in 1903. That’s back when Teddy Seven was still on the throne and a bloke called Balfour was PM. To give you a better understanding of the times consider this, what cars there were drove on very bumpy roads and were preceded by a man with a red flag; there was no X Factor; nothing was in HD and a trip to the dentist was a trip best avoided. Anyway, into all this 14 year-old Danny started in the newspaper game and became a Linotype operator.

Newspapers in those days were produced in a labour intensive way. The job of the Linotype machine operator was to enter text on a 90-character keyboard. This huge machine then assembled ‘matrices’, which were molds for the letter forms, in a line. The assembled line was then cast as a single piece (called a ‘slug’) of type metal in a process known as ‘hot metal’ typesetting. “Eh, none of yer pansy desktop editing then, lad...”

Anyway, zip forward pass two world wars, The Beatles, the moon landings and the three-day-week into 1975 and Danny, after seventy-two years in the game, finds fifteen minutes of fame (hmmm, that rhythms). He is in the local and national press and even gets a mention in 1975’s Guinness Book of Records. The mayor of Brighton pops around to his work (chains and all) to press flesh and grin for a photo op’; and whisks away him and my Nan for tea in the Mayor’s parlour – these were grander times, folks. Danny then receives a letter from Her Maj, and some local rep of hers takes him, his missus and his two sons and daughter-in-laws out for a slap-up nosh. I tell you what, that BEM-ing seemed to be one mad round of noshing. Still, I guess the old bugger had earned it.

Although, I must add, carefully donning my cynical cap, the ba****ds still taxed him fully until the day he finally retired. He was a tax payer from age 14 to 86. You’d have thought after paying tax for an extra twenty years over retirement they might have let him off when he got to 85! The following year he lost the top of a finger in the Linotype machine (that wouldn’t happen with DTP) and it was decided that now might be a good time for Danny to call it a day.

I never really knew quite what he made of all the fuss because, despite being close to my grandfather, he was from an age where feelings were private matters. He enjoyed four years of retirement and ‘popped off’ just short of his ninety-second birthday - I still miss him.

El Hierro suffers further quake

THE CANARIAN island of El Hierro experienced an earthquake at 7.54am on Wednesday. The quake is the strongest yet and was felt by all of the small population, mostly concentrated in the La Restinga area.

The UME (Unidad Militar de Emergencias) has announced that vital equipment has been transported to El Hierro to enable a full service shelter to be built with a capacity to accommodate up to 2,000 people should an evacuation become necessary. The north of the island is being assessed for the possibility of further seismic activity. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 20km in the bay of El Golfo.

“Making You Money” and “Putting You First”

Independent Financial Adviser Paul Clarke said that a strategy of simply leaving savings on deposit with a bank actually risked seeing them lose value.

He said expert impartial advice was crucial and he wanted to be “positively different to the rest of the pack,” providing personalised financial planning, “making you money and putting you first.” And he said: “Many people are leaving money on deposit with banks because they think doing nothing is a good strategy. Doing nothing could cost you a lot as you could be receiving income and growth through investing your capital.” “I also have clients with existing investments through other brokers. However, they have not been reviewed ‘face to face’ for years and the broker is only interested “if there is more money being invested”.

Paul said: “This is simply not acceptable in today’s service-orientated marketplace.

If you don’t look after your clients, someone else will.”

Planning your succession could save your beneficiaries thousands of euros in inheritance and /or ‘gift’ taxes by

MANY OF us are unaware of how the Inheritance Tax (IHT) process works in Spain and therefore we do not know the amount that our beneficiaries may have to pay when receiving an Inheritance or a Donation.

The amount to be paid will depend to a great extent on details such as the: 1) Place of residence of the deceased.

2) Place of residence of the beneficiaries or of those receiving the Inheritance or Donation.

3) Family links between the deceased and the heir(s).

4) Nature of the assets, etc.

This can be even more difficult to understand when we take into consideration that the Inheritance and Donations in Spain can be subject to either an Estate Tax or an Autonomous Community Tax - and because the tax rules of each Spanish Community differ considerably from one Community to another, the amount to be paid can significantly vary depending upon the tax law applicable to each case.

In principle we can say that the general rule is as follows: 1) For Successions (Inheritance) the tax rules to be applied will be those of the Community (Comunidad Autonoma) where the deceased had his or her Habitual Residence which is determined in Law 22/2009 of December 18th, as the territory where the deceased remained the greatest number of days during the past 5 years before his or her death.

2) In the case of Donations, the tax rules to be applied will be those of the Community (Comunidad Autonoma) where the beneficiary (i.e. the recipient of the Donation) has his or her Habitual Residence similar to the above specified.

It needs to be highlighted that in those cases where the Valencian Community rules and regulations are to be applied, an important bonus of 99% on the Inheritance Tax (IHT) is applied for those beneficiaries who have their residence in the Valencian Community, as long as they are ascendants, descendants or the spouse of the deceased.

Thus in the hypothetical case of a man who lived in Denia for 10 years and passed away, leaving his two sons as beneficiaries (one son with residence in Denia and the other son with residence in Madrid), the son who lives in Denia would pay almost no Inheritance Tax due to the above mentioned 99% bonus for those heirs living in the Valencian Community).

On the other hand, the son with residence in Madrid cannot enjoy this bonus and could end up paying a very high amount depending of course on the value of the

assets to be inherited.

In the above mentioned case, suitable legal and tax advice to the father (while still alive) is extremely important and opportune, as it could help in solving this discriminatory situation for the son living in Madrid by making a ‘Donation’ to his son. The applicable Law for Donations (in general) clearly specifies that the tax to be paid will depend upon the place of residence of the recipient (beneficiary) of the Donation, and the fiscal Law of Madrid foresees a similar bonus of 99% tax for Donations between parents and children.

It is therefore very useful and important to consider each and every situation individually, taking into account the personal and family circumstances of each case, with the purpose of establishing the appropriate strategy that will minimise Inheritance Tax, and thus not cause any financial harm to our future beneficiaries.

IN A previous article I discussed the crucial difference between a basic and augmented product or service. Now we come to the difficult decision on how to price a product.

Pricing can be made incredibly simple or incredibly complicated. We need to consider: What is the cost of the product we are offering?

Do we include fixed costs in our prices or just variable (avoidable) costs? We need to cover fixed costs to make a profit, so variable cost pricing can apply to only limited products or services; What value do customers place on our product?

If a product costs us 2€, including fixed costs, but customers value it at 3€, then we are throwing money away if we only charge 2.50€.

To find an example of wrong pricing, we need look no further than many of the urban bus services. In Denia, a trip on the Las Marinas bus costs €1.50 whether a passenger travels 1 kilometre or 12. What are the results of this oversimplistic pricing?

Long distance passengers get a very good deal and they would willingly pay more. After all, on trains, coaches or cars, we expect longer distance journeys to cost more; Shorter distance passengers may be deterred

from using the bus as they consider it too expensive for short hops; and The bus company loses money as a result, requiring more government funding to run the services. And the money comes from our taxes!

Other aspects of price relating back to the product or service offered include ‘bundling’ and ‘peak pricing’. We are, I’m sure, all familiar with cafes which offer a coffee and a pastry together for a lower price than the two items bought individually, but bundling could be applied to most types of business.

A very common feature of many, if not most businesses, is having seasonal variation in demand. This variation could be by time of day, day of the week or season of the year. I am sure that you all appreciate that a flight to the UK costs a lot more on a Saturday in August than a Tuesday in January! So, we can stimulate demand by reducing prices during off-peak periods, either unconditionally (‘10% off everything’) or with restrictions (‘buy two coffees, get a third for free’).

So, to summarise, what are the main lessons to getting price right? Get to know when your business has peaks and troughs in demand and also what they are willing to pay. Of course, what competitors charge is important, but understanding your customers is even more so.

AT A rally attended by around 3,000 people in Murcia, PSOE leader Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba said today that if elected he intends to reform corporate tax breaks, redistributing them for the benefit of entrepreneurial projects, the self-employed and small to medium businesses. At present tax breaks benefit

only large enterprises. Rubalcaba is also requesting lower interest rates from the European Central Bank for businesses to access credit and create jobs to relieve unemployment. “Speaking of taxes is always unpopular,” said Rubalcaba, “but we have to be honest about where the money is to come from.”

DO YOU declare everything that you should? If the answer is ‘no’, you’re not on your own. Tax evasion ranges from those who have ‘neglected’ to declare a few items of extra income to those who live completely below the radar. Someone once said that tax avoidance can be expected: its tax evasion that’s illegal.

Wherever the line is drawn, they’re both rife in Spain.

No one wants to pay more tax than they have to, but if everyone avoids or evades it, then the repercussions for the economy can be disastrous.

The situation in Spain is a perfect example of this. The country, from its town halls to national government, is desperate for money. If the black market didn’t exist then Spain would probably not be in the situation it is.

The authorities know this. The theme of the ‘economía sumergida’ (black economy) came up for discussion at a course for our tax advisers recently. Believe it or not, a plan against fiscal fraud was originally started in 2005 in Spain.

It has taken a little time to gather

momentum, but now there is an acceleration in the way it is being applied and whom it is being applied to.

Previously, there weren’t the resources to fully put the plan into place, but there are now. Does that sound a bit topsy turvy when the economic situation is so dire?

It’s actually quite logical. In 2005 they didn’t need the money as much. Now they need it urgently and recognise that it’s worth while putting some money in to get much more out.

So, they are investing in the personnel and the resources and putting the fiscal fraud plan into full operation. Over the next few weeks we’ll be covering in this column the different aspects of the plan that could affect expats living in Spain: here’s our first bulletin.

FISCAL FRAUD PLAN – BULLETIN 1 You may already be familiar with the ‘modelos’ - the forms that you complete for tax and other official purposes. Now there is modelo 159. This is the form that Iberdrola must complete about electricity

users which then goes to the Tax Authority. It is a summary of all the information that Iberdrola hold about you. It includes your name, your property details, bank details, NIE, whether you are resident or non-resident and, most importantly, your electricity consumption.

You might wonder what use this is to the Tax Authority. Lots. To begin with, it shows clearly any anomalies there might be. For example, people who are living here and not making tax declarations or people who say they are non-residents, aren’t paying tax on rental income and yet have constant, year-round electricity consumption.

Where these anomalies exist, there is likely to be a visit to the property from a tax official, just to check if there is a reasonable explanation.

At the moment, they plan to chase up 1,000,000 anomalies. And this is just the start.

Euro/Sterling Weekly Market Update brought to you by & THE EU summit meeting resulted in a solution to the southern European debt crisis. It will be weeks or months before investors can be sure this latest plan will do the job.

However, after 14 ‘emergency’ summit meetings in less than two years it is the nearest thing to a workable solution that investors have seen so far. As such, it met with a positive reception. It helped that what EU leaders announced on Wednesday night was similar to what they had led the market to expect.

Broadly the resolution addresses the problem of Greece’s over-indebtedness and its inability to borrow in the commercial market, the risk of those symptoms placing other member nations in a similar bind and the ability of commercial banks to withstand any unspecified future sovereign default.

For Greece itself the plan proposes that holders of government bonds give them up in return for AAA bonds issued by the European Financial Stability Fund (EFSF) for half their nominal value. The holders - principally banks will lose half their money but the other half will be safe.

For the protection of possible future potential sovereign defaulters - and we’re talking about Italy here - the resources of the EFSF will be quadru-

pled to €1 trillion through the use of ‘special purpose investment vehicle’ derivatives. The aim is to restore confidence in Italian government bonds by supporting their price.

A very long list of questions needs to be answered and it will take weeks or months to find those answers. The biggest question of the lot is about where all the money will come from. President Sarkozy went on TV to say he would accept contributions from China even though he did not need them, but that if he were to receive them after all they would not give China any sort of hold over France. It was all slightly embarrassing.

Apart from the question of who pays, there are no obvious massive flaws in what is, when all is said and done, a plan born out of desperation. With that in mind investors seem ready to give it the benefit of the doubt for now.

Whilst the first day’s relief rally for the euro is unlikely to be repeated it would be reasonable for the euro to retain its support into the coming week.

Please note that in all the above there is no reference to sterling. This is because the whole of last week’s sterling/euro movement was driven by the buying or selling of the euro. Sterling performed well enough against the US dollar and Japanese yen but not as well as the euro.

All the elevens mark Remembrance Day THE NUMBER 11 plays a unique role in this year’s Remembrance Day when millions of people around the world come to a halt on 11th November to observe a two minute silence and reflect on the sacrifice of those who fell in war. By Jack Troughton

The time and date mark the Armistice at the end of the Great War in 1918 – and is known as the 11th hour or the 11th day of the 11th month. However, this year, 2011, makes the numbers take on an extra significance, 11.11.11.(20)11.

The Royal British Legion is the custodian of Remembrance and also plays a key role in supporting those who are serving and servicemen and women and their families. The most familiar fund-raiser for the charity is the annual Poppy Appeal, 12 months ago it raise £34 million around the globe.

And as the Legion celebrates its 90th year, the Legion is geared up to help the Afghan Generation – and veterans as young as 18 who have served in the Middle East. Since 2003, it has helped 10,000 servicemen and women who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. District North Spain has 20 branches and its main task is welfare, raising money through the Poppy Appeal.

Spokesman Peggy Wyatt said: “Please support the Poppy Appeal by wearing a poppy and making a donation to support those who have and continuing to serve their country.

“Our television news programmes bring it home to us all the terrible sacrifices our Armed Forces personnel make every day of their serving lives.”

She added: “With veterans as young as 18, it seems that these vital funds are going to be needed for years to come.”

Walking holiday to Cazorla

Cazorla

CAZORLA IS a town within the largest National Park in Spain (circa Granada). Walks ranged from 8k to 22k and were generally 6 to 7 hours in duration, climbing to about 600-800 meters most days: one climb reached a height of over 1,900m.

On one of the days, climbers arrived at the top of one mountain looking into a canyon and were treated to a fantastic aerial display by ‘Charrow vultures’. All of the walks were very different (except for the climbing). And at the end of each day walkers were all very tired but exhilarated.

SONSOLES ESPINOSA, wife of Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, sang soprano on Monday evening as a member of a chorale group at the ‘Commentor Vocis’ concert at the church of San José – a tribute to the works of Spanish composer Tomas Luis de Victoria in the Festival d’Elx. She arrived discreetly in Elche a few hours prior to the event in a taxi with a single bodyguard but with her distinctive blonde locks were still recognised and she was welcomed with warm applause, participating in various pieces although at no time singing solo: ‘Commentor Vocis’ is a choral group that sings three or four voices and sometimes eight.

THE GHOST Academy, which is based in Villamartin in Orihuela Costa, will be hosting a fabulous evening of James Bond themed performances of dance and music at a fundraising event on 11th November at La Rustika (formally Los Arcos Restaurant) in Torrevieja.

The show, which features nearly 30 academy pupils, also includes special guest appearances by the fantastically talented Richie Alexander, Lewis Laking and Curtis Senior.

A weekly ‘cut out and keep’ feature helping you to learn basic Spanish for everyday needs

The Letter THE LETTER G is probably the least favourite letter for English speakers of Spanish. There are two reasons for this, one is that it represents a sound that doesn’t exist in the English language, so therefore is a bit hard for us to grapple with, and the other is that it is one of the few letters that has more than one pronunciation depending on where it appears in the word.

Having said that, it’s really not that scary, we just have to remember a few basic principles.

First of all, the rule about the two sounds, which is very similar to the letter C rule. Here it is: if the G is followed by the vowels “e” or “i”, it is pronounced like a noisy, throaty “h”. The sound is the same as the Scottish pronunciation of “loch”. Now this is hard for a lot of people, but there is some leeway. The important thing to remember is that this sound is made in the throat. If you put your hand to your throat and say “loch” the Scottish way, you should actually feel the movement there. If you find it hard to produce a sound with that much friction, then notice that the English “h” sound is produced in almost exactly the same place. If you can manage a sound anywhere between the English “h” and the Spanish “ge” or “gi”, you’ll be fine. Even the Spanish themselves vary this sound slightly from the full strong sound to a lighter, almost “h” sound, depending on the area they come from and other factors.

This sound appears in words like gente (people) and girasol (sunflower).

If the letter G appears before any other letter, the sound is similar to the English “g” (as in goat), although rather lighter.

At the beginning of a word, for example, gafas (glasses) it is very close to the hard English “g”, whereas in the middle of a word such as agua (water) it is much lighter, and in some accents disappears completely giving us a sound a bit like “awa”.

Well, having thoroughly confused you all regarding the pronunciation of the letter G, lets

move boldly forward and look at some similar words between our two languages beginning with G. Amongst many we have: garantía (guarantee), gas (gas), general (general), gol (goal), gradual (gradual), grupo (group). Out of these examples, you will see that only one makes the throaty “h” sound, and that is general.

Here are a couple of “estranged cousins”, that is words that are similar in both languages but different in meaning. The Spanish word guardar means “to keep” or “to put away” rather than “to guard” which is vigilar. Likewise the Spanish word grabar means “to record” and not “to grab” which is agarrar.

A very common word in Spanish beginning with G is that lovely word “guapo” meaning handsome, or “guapa” pretty.

The Spanish use these words for much more than just describing someone’s physical attributes.

“Guapo” or “guapa” may be called out to someone who is performing on stage, or in the bullring, to encourage them in their performance. It might be said on the street to a stranger.

These sort of compliments to strangers have a name is Spanish - “el piropo”, which is part of the “latin” culture. We also use these words just to be nice to people we know. I have a friend who always answers with “¡Hola guapa!” when I phone her on her mobile.

Maybe she thinks I’m particularly pretty or maybe she says it to everyone, I’m not sure! Going back to pronunciation just for a minute - the “gu” combination at the beginning of a word does in fact make for a very light sound, so “guapo” almost sounds like “wapo”. That is how it is spelt in Spanish texting – although we really don’t want to go there!

Well, if you’ve got this far and are still with me, I’ve got a very nice little saying for you containing a G word. It is “sobre gustos no hay nada escrito”. The literal translation is: “About tastes there is nothing written” or in other words: “There’s no accounting for taste” and I think we can all agree with that!

or physical rituals, the compulsions, which involve repeatedly performing actions such as hand washing, cleaning, checking, counting, hoarding or partaking in endless rumination. Avoidance of feared situations is also common. However, this often results in further worrying and preoccupation with the obsessional thoughts.

Forward head posture

WE OFTEN hear that good posture is essential for good health but normally we don’t consciously think about it. Instead, certain muscles do it for us - that is if they work correctly. Hours on hours in front of the computer desk, too many pillows under the head while reading, whiplash injuries and prolonged commutes in a car can overload these muscles making them weak and less resilient and cause premature arthritis of the joints and discs.

The most common change in posture is a gradual reversion to the foetal position: the head and shoulders shift forwards, the chest curls inwards and the spine crunches from a healthy S-curve to a less healthy C-position. Forward head tilt is so common today that it is given a diagnosis: Dropped Head Syndrome. For every inch of forward head tilt the load on the cervical spine is increased by up to 10 pounds.

Most people don’t think about how that affects our general health, but it can cause a myriad of symptoms with headaches, and shoulder and neck pains being the most common.

Uneven pressure on the vertebral discs, the cushioning pads, between the bones leads to spinal misalignments called vertebral subluxations. A consequence of that is stiffness, preventing you from standing up straight, eventually leading to the common hunched back we see in many elderly.

However since the lack of mobility diminishes the stimulation to the nerve system they are now linking the condition to more serious diseases like dementia and even Alzheimers.

SO WHAT CHANGES HAVE BEEN MADE TO THE IPHONE 4 TO GIVE US THE 4S? Well, firstly there is the CPU (the phone’s brain) - this is now the same dual-core A5 processor as used in the iPad 2. This packs a seven times increase in graphical processing power over the iPhone4. Okay, so it´s significantly more powerful, but this is only going to be significant in the future when heavy-duty apps and games start appearing; right now there’s not much about to take advantage of this increase in power.

What else is new? How about an 8MP camera with improved optics for taking clear and crisp photos? Combining Apple’s HDR (high dynamic range) imaging technology with one of the best examples of face recognition software to be found on a phone results in excellent photos every time.

Add in 1080p high definition video recording, with anti-shake stabilisation for those all-important home videos, and the iPhone 4S is starting to make a case for replacing your camera too.

And with a new iOS 5 operating system appearing, perhaps the case in favour of the IPhone 4S is getting stronger. The new interface is snazzier and even easier to use, and includes useful new features such as notifications – a drop down menu accessible from anywhere on the phone to let you see all manner of updates such as weather, news and messages.

But the feature everyone is talking about is the Siri voice recognition. A long press of the home button will result in the Siri voice icon appearing. Alternatively, you can activate the service automatically when you hold the phone up to your ear in standby mode.

From there, you’ve got a range of things you can achieve by speech alone, such as sending a message, playing a song, setting the alarm, or creating a reminder. And surprisingly it´s quick and actually gets it right most of the time.

Steph via email asks: THIS IS only a minor problem that I’m hoping you can help me with.

I’m running Windows 7 Home Premium and it’s requesting that I backup.

I’ve bought myself an 8GB memory stick but can’t seem to be able to get my laptop to do the back up onto it, it keeps requesting discs to be inserted into the drive, well I got to 7 and gave up: any ideas please?

Aunty Says: Hi Steph. You’ll probably find your backup is too big to fit on an 8GB memory stick. The Windows 7 backup

utility is pretty good but I found it a bit too excessive, as I was really only interested in backing up my personal files etc. If you go to ‘control panel’ you can get to the backup program where you can choose exactly what/ when to backup, and, as in your case, where you want to store it. Click on the ‘set up backup’ link and follow the prompts until you see the ‘let me choose’ option which is where you can un-tick the ‘include a system image’ which will limit the backup to just your data and enable you to fit it on your USB stick.

Ray via email asks: HI AUNTY, I have a problem that in the past three days Yahoo has taken over as my default search engine, even though in Google is clicked as default search engine in Chrome. I erased Yahoo elsewhere on my PC but it has still somehow taken over again and appeared in ‘basics’ underneath Google chrome (default). Can you help with this problem to keep it off my computer?

Aunty Says: Hi Ray. Under the ‘basics’ setting in Chrome make sure you have ‘open the homepage’ set under the ‘On Startup’ section, and in the ‘Homepage’ section make sure you have google.co.uk where it says ‘open this page’. That should do the trick.

Fred via email asks: HI THERE Aunty. I have recently replaced my tower PC as the old one suddenly stopped working. I have managed to save the original hard disk and I have connected it to my new PC via a USB connection by putting it into a hard disk enclosure which I bought on Ebay. I have been able to transfer all of the documents and pictures from the old disk to the new PC but I cannot find a way to get the emails from MS Outlook on the old disk. Unfortunately I had not done a complete backup on the old PC. Do you know of a way for me to be able to see these emails and transfer them to my new system? Both the old and the new PCs use Windows XP. Aunty Says: Hello Fred. You can do this by locating the outlook. pst file on the old disk and then using the ‘file’ ‘import’ function within Outlook to bring the emails in.

The .pst files are normally hidden so you will need to go to ‘control panel’ ‘folder options’ ‘view’ and ‘show hidden files and folders’. Once you have enabled this you can use the Windows search function (start search) to find the latest outlook.pst file and copy it to the new computer. When you start the import process within outlook you need to choose ‘import from another program or file’ and browse to the location that you saved the pst file. Good luck, and take your time and you should be okay.

Red notice in the centre of the screen

Chris via email asks: I AM using Outlook Express and Mozilla Firefox on my XP home computer and for the last month I have a red notice in the centre of the screen saying ‘AUTO CONFIG PLEASE WAIT’.

The notice disappears completely but reappears every minute for the first hour, after that it reappears when I switch programs or open a new webpage. Task Manager does not show anything else running and as far as I know I have not downloaded any-

thing new. I can´t click and move on the notice, but although I can type under it I obviously cannot read or see anything under it. When the notice is on screen all the colours of the page fade. The computer and monitor are about 5/6 years old.

Aunty Says: This message is possibly being generated by your screen’s internal configuration program (rather than Windows) as there is an issue with your

screen coping with the PC’s higher graphic capabilities. I’m not sure why it has just started happening, or why it is repeatedly appearing but you may be able to adjust down your screen resolution settings within Windows (Control Panel, Display, Settings tab, Advanced button) to a lower and more compatible setting. Maybe downloading the latest drivers for your graphics card will help as well. Of course it is always possible you have a faulty screen so let me know how you get on.

One aspect of my dream has started to repeat and is so vivid, so real, and I always wake up in panic.

Jo V. Hi Jo. Our dreams are often reflections of things currently going on in our lives, although many bad dreams are dreams in reverse and mean the opposite. I still wake up in the middle of an exam dream in which I cannot answer the questions. Light sleepers respond to longer periods of rapid eye movement which is when repeat dreams and vivid dreams make their entry. Sounds very corny, but only go to sleep when you are tired, forget the clock, and be in a darkened room. A glass of milk helps the stomach to digest lightly and is a calmative for the body. Try to work out stresses and alleviate the unhealthy stress in your life, if you can.

Repeat dreams can go as quickly as they came if you imagine yourself standing up or clapping your hands or defiantly saying no and walking away. Nothing is worse than a bad night’s sleep, you wake tired and it’s not a good start to any day. Tell Spirit that you are tired, need to sleep and are not responding to anything bad, lay down the law and be positive…it works!

Time for paths

AFTER THE rain we should start to get some sunny winter days; just the time to start to add or modify the paths around the garden before next spring. There is a long chapter in our book ‘Your Garden in Spain – From planning to planting and maintenance’ but it would often seem that the advice has been ignored or not read as those developing their gardens have not discovered the book. So this week we are highlighting ten essential things: 1. The purpose of paths They include the following.

To move around the garden easily and safely.

To link the different areas and features in an interesting way.

To create interesting internal vistas.

To move rain water to where most needed.

2. Straight or curved These days, few garden paths have to be straight because one has to walk along a straight washing line. So work in some curved and winding stretches. These will add interest to the garden.

3. Single or varied width Varying the width of paths can add interest. For instance a narrowing path will make your garden seem larger than it actually is.

4. Edging or no edging Edging stones can prevent earth being washed onto paths from flower beds and to retain lose surface materials. Also use them to lay out trial routes and widths before infilling with chippings etc.

5. Useful surfaces In Chapter 2.4 we describe seventeen practical surfaces to choose from ranging from concrete to stone slabs, chippings to perfumed plants and bark chippings or grass.

6. Against or away from the house walls Houses with no plants around the house can look harsh and austere. Sub tropical plants will benefit from the reflected heat of walls especially during the cooler months.

7. Weed prevention Lay solid plastic sheeting under particle paths such as stone chippings to prevent weeds and move water to where best used and retain a moisture reservoir under the path for the roots of plants growing alongside the path. We have a weed free chipping path laid over overlapping supermarket bags over 20 years ago. The bags are still intact!

8. Crazy paving can be crazy When we first moved into the house we initially laid part of the pathway network with loose stone slabs laid over a layer of sand with low growing herbs in the gaps between the slabs… After two storms the surface of the path was all over the place as edges of slabs sank into the soft red clay below the sand when one walked on them during and just after rain.

So it was re-laid over concrete and the ideas of herbs between the rocks cancelled.

9. Steps and slopes Where these are essential for getting from one level to another ensure the widths, step heights and slope gradients are safe for users of all ages and levels of fitness. Also think about moving a heavily loaded wheel barrow around!

10. Maintenance Well laid paths will require little maintenance except for trimming edging plants, sweeping up leaves and accumulated dirt, possibly

Javea goes crazy

TRANGE GOINGS on and even stranger characters have been reported at the Javea Players’ Studio as the theatre group rehearse for next month’s new production.

There are a coven of witches, a demon, the ghost of a recently assassinated king, a mad duke and a fool complete with bells.

It is all part of the preparations for Terry Pratchett’s wonderful ‘The Wyrd Sisters’ a fast moving spook that puts Shakespeare on a collision course with Blackadder.

The play runs from 28th November to 2nd December each night from 8pm at the Union Musical in Gata de Gorgos. Tickets are 12€ each and are already selling well: book early by ringing the Box Office on 96 579 4937. There is a 2€ reduction on each seat for groups of 20 or more on Monday 28th November.

And auditions begin for Javea Players’ next production One Way Pendulum by NF Simpson and directed by Norman Dunnington on Monday 7th November at 7.30pm. The zany comedy is scheduled to run from 23rd to 27th April, 2012, at Gata.

Fee-Fi-Fo-Fum Marian Carter directs the panto

THE FUN-packed family panto Jack and the Beanstalk under the direction of Marian Carter with Musical Director Roger Dean will play the Careline Theatre in Alcalali from Wednesday 11th January to Sunday 15th January, with matinee performances on the Saturday and Sunday. The choreographer is Suzanna Mace with wardrobe by Jan Walker and the set designed by John Pollitt and Andy Crabb.

Back trouble causes show cancellations

The children’s menu For those of you with a nervous disposition I would advise that you miss this next bit as some of you may think it’s a bit disgusting.

Nobody likes us, everybody hates us, let’s go and eat some worms, Big ones, small ones, fat ones, skinny ones, see how the little ones squirm, Bite their heads off, slurp all the juice out, throw their skins away, Nobody knows how much we thrive, on worms three times a day…

Another plateful, worms three times a daaay...

Or how about: Great big gobs of greasy grimy Gopher guts, mutilated monkey meat, little duckies muddy feet, all this makes a very, very tasty treat…I forgot my spoon.

Okay so if you have rejoined us now the above is quite gross to adults but for children of any age its fantastic. Little sibling horrors who all regularly run up the garden path towards you with handfuls of the most putrid of substances which they want to show you just a brief nanosecond before putting it into their mouths. All around the globe the all too familiar scream rings out “For Goodness sake don’t put that in your mouth!” It’s something that even the most modern antibacterial wipe cannot prejudge.

So fast forward to little persons who in both

shops and restaurants and possibly home as well all of a sudden can’t eat this or won’t eat that and certainly doesn’t like yucky stuff that they’ve never tried before.

This includes Tarquin whom I met following a frantic call to come up with ‘something fishy’ for a surprise party some time ago. No details, just leave the menu to you, we all love seafood, it’s tonight and it’s for seven people, got to go now, goodbye.

So we decided upon what we call a ‘seafood mess’.

Cover a garden table with newspaper and have a few empty bins handy. Then, take a giant wok and fill it with a selection of Tallinas, Chirlas, Mussels, Razor Clams (Navajas), Algochofas, new potatoes, stuffed squid, soft shell crabs, chopitos and Venus clams, cook over a high heat until cooked and then dump the whole lot on the paper covered table and let everyone help themselves: you will be amazed at who eats what.

When we arrived at the venue we were informed that five of the guests were children and they don’t ‘do’ that type of food and Tarquin especially wouldn’t go near anything like that. Leaving me alone whilst Mum went to find her purse with a stack of yucky food and three hungry children I couldn’t resist the chance to change dear little Tarquins’ attitude, so I told him that what was in front of him was deep fried spiders and were

fantastic for chasing your sister around the garden with although they did taste a bit funny. Without what was obviously a tempting opportunity to chase his sister he popped a squid into his mouth and declared it “yes…okay.” Within seconds all the children were tucking into the mess making up their own names for what it was they were currently eating.

On Mums return she nearly passed out watching the children tucking into the mess and shouted at me “How did you make them eat that?” Simple - take a food dictionary - especially the ones they use to describe the food on restaurant menus and throw it in the bin and just make it up. Kids, believe me, will eat just about anything: it’s the adults we have problems with.

BACK DAMAGE sustained a few weeks ago by Charles Prince, star of the Glam 70s tour due to start this week has resulted in four of the five Shows on the Glam 70s tour being cancelled. Jukebox Promotions have had to reduce the tour to just one venue next week.

Spokesman for the company Peter Day said: “We were hoping that our star act for this tour was going to recover in time but it hasn’t happened and so we have had to cancel some shows. We believe he will be okay for next week’s show at The Lounge Bar in Torrevieja on Tuesday 8th November and hope that people will be able to come along and enjoy this amazing event. The show will start at 8.30pm and tickets are just 7.50€. IT’S JUST getting worse and worse for the X Factory with the latest debacle occurring a week or so ago when Louis Walsh’s charges Kitty Brucknell and Johnny Robinson decided to blow off some steam by visiting The Village nightclub in Central London, a place where they planned to display their dubious talents at Karaoke. However, unfortunately Kitty forgot most of her kit … ee revealing three quarters of her poop deck from behind. Instead of Karaoke-singing the young lady quickly confirmed she is not only a Britney Spears impersonator on stage, but also when it comes to a night out on the town. Flesh-coloured tights completed the over-the-top slut look.

Other important information you need to know is that just a few days before this incident Kitty was visibly shocked and upset, in front of the cameras, when Louis Walsh sent fellow group member Sam Brookes home, but we are all over the moon to now discover that Kitty Knickers has proved to us all what remarkable powers of recovery she has. I have long since scratched Top Gear off my list of programmes not to miss, as my enjoyment level of the show hit well below zero around 7 or 8 years ago when Jeremy ‘I am God’ Clarkson seemed to be going to great lengths to disappear up his Jackson.

Driving Licence Medicals: the latest by

I ENJOYED an interesting interview with the charming and helpful Señor Jesus Maria Gomez Garcia, manager of the La Linea Trafico Office situated opposite the Gibraltar Border Post, the nearest Trafico to where I live, along with the able assistance of Dean Shelton, an expat who has lived here for 20 years and who works as a liaison manager for the Manilva ayuntamiento.

He agreed to accompany me as my command of the Spanish language is less than satisfactory.

Sr. Gomez agreed that the Spanish law on the subject does advise the reconcimientoes to treat those resident expats with foreign legal driving licences exactly the same as Spanish drivers when issuing the certificates after a medical. This is the way it currently works: When a driver with a Spanish licence takes the medical, he/she is issued with an A4 certificate along with his existing licence card which is due to expire, and the number of years depends on the results of the medical tests. The application is now done online with Trafico in the clinic which saves a lot of time. The A4 paper certificate, though, states the length of time in years that the licence is to be extended / renewed, and within 2 to 5 weeks a new card is posted to the

registered address of the driver so he/she then destroys or files away the now expired original card licence.

When a foreign licence expires, the holder then has to change to a Spanish one which is not a problem and does have some benefits.

We were led to understand that in the case of foreign drivers, the A4 certificate is to be kept along with the original foreign licence until the next medical is due when the date on the certificate approaches.

This should be from 3 to 10 years being less only if there is a medical reason. Expats have been reporting that the certificates issued and with a cost of up to €60 each have only three months validity on them which, as I and Dean surmised, and Sr. Garcia agreed, was the time given while the expat changed the foreign licence for the Spanish one until March 2005 when the law was changed after the EU ordered the Spanish govt.

To obey the EU Directive Sr. Gomez stated that this is completely wrong - as we all know.

But the clinics are administered by each separate province or autonomous region so he has promised to email a copy of the Law on the subject, and then advise on how those of the expats who have been

issued with three-month certificates can return to the clinic to obtain (free of charge?) a new certificate with the correct number of years as in my table supplied in this column in the past.

As soon as I have the details from Sr. Gomez, I will advise on what to do next, but do not panic: the clinics through their regions will then be advised on the correct procedure as in the legal documents that have already been sent but obviously failed to understand properly.

Perhaps of interest, I tried to obtain the official help of the British Consulate through Malaga and was very politely advised that I should contact the Trafico Madrid Office to progress the solution. Great to be a Civil servant isn’t it? Part of the training must be how to avoid work by passing it back to those who pay their salaries.

Once this is all settled a full report will be sent to the British Ambassador in Madrid as I do believe that they really need to know what is affecting us expats here in Spain, even if they do not wish to help. Sorry to be cynical but at age 73, I speak my mind as I have done most of my life. So please watch this space for more news and do not worry about the three month certificates or throw them away.

REFEREES NORMALLY get a pretty hard time of it. Indeed, more than a few of them have copped in this column over the years so it’s always good to redress the balance when possible. In midweek, Billy Sharp scored for Doncaster Rovers against Middlesbrough and proceeded to lift his shirt over his head revealing a T-shirt which bore the message ‘That’s for you son’, a tribute to his infant son who had died a few days earlier.

By the letter of the law Sharp should have been booked but referee Darren Deadman exercised his common sense and decided not to brandish a card. In this instance he was bang on the money. Let’s hope that the Football League referee’s assessor who was watching from the stands is also as sensible and doesn’t penalise Deadman for his understanding of a very special set of circumstances.

TWO WEEKS ago I was asked by our friends at Levante & Lebeche to test a new range of American golf shoes called TrueLinks Golf Shoes.

As I spend eight or more hours per day in golf shoes, usually six days per week, I always look for comfort and safety above all else. Levante & Lebeche thought I would be a good person to test the claims of the shoes manufacturers that they make the most comfortable golf shoe on the market with technology to match. I am always skeptical of such claims and in the past have always been disappointed with the claims made by manufacturers about their products.

I would endorse any products unless they are absolutely top quality and do the jobs that they are supposed to do. These golf shoes do everything and more that the manufacturers claim. After my first day with them when I wore them for around ten hours I could not believe that my feet felt so good. At first because the shoes are a different shape, with a wider than normal front half of the shoe, I was convinced they would not be comfortable and not last the day.

Now I cannot recommend these shoes highly enough to those who play our sport and come off the course with sore feet and aching legs.

When I first put the shoes on I immediately noticed that the heels were lower than normal, this is where technology comes into the shoe but I am not going to bore the pants off you with that side of the story. I was only interested in the shoe being comfortable and waterproof; they were certainly both. I also wanted to be certain that the new idea of not having spikes of any sort would give me stability in all conditions; once again they came up trumps.

My conclusion is that you don’t have to buy a brand of footwear that you have heard of to get qual-

ity and value for money. New names in the industry have something to prove, they will usually have something different to offer. These shoes are well worth trying if you are in the market for a new pair of golf shoes and will feel so comfortable you will not want to get them off your feet as quickly as possible after your round.

Tigers show their claws Torrevieja Tigers 61 – Alicante 3: 29th October

TORREVIEJA TIGERS U18s sponsored by the Black Bull of Torremendo welcomed Alicante University U18s to Nelson Mandela Stadium for their first home game of the season on Sunday 29th October, with Alicante kicking off and mounting a determined attack in the opening minutes. They converted a penalty but these proved to be their only points of the match.

Tigers responded immediately with some great forwards play which led to the Captain, Edu, powering over for the first try of the game.

The Tigers started to dominate the game through their forwards, keeping the visitors penned in their own half while Tigers’ Welsh scrum half Tom Evans rounded the visitors defence on the blindside to add a second try. From this point on Tigers started to score freely with tries coming thick and fast. No 8, Nico, unstoppable and scoring 3 tries in the match.

The Tigers’ forwards dominated the set pieces, particularly in the scrum with Alicante continually pinned back by the Tigers’ aggressive blitz defence. Tries were added by Michael Moran, Dan Lester in both halves with the extras coming from the boot of Tigers’ No 10, Michael Moran.

Late in the game, Tigers’ outside centre, Jimbo Pan, intercepted a wayward pass from the Alicante backs on his own 22 metre line to sprint the whole length of the pitch to score. Alicante to their credit battled to the end but had no answer to Tigers on the day.

on the far bank of the match stretch on the River Segura at Murcia. Well it looks to have started with lorries bringing in 30 to 40ft plastic pipes. I asked one of the local Spanish anglers what was happening in my limited Spanish and was told that the pipes are to divert the river around the match stretch. In that case they are then netting and removing the fish to the largo i.e. long stretch? And will then dredge the river to make it into a Pantana, which is a reservoir: we will just have to await the outcome.

Our next week’s match is booked there through the Murcian Federation. Licenses are still required and are free providing you have a Spanish ‘Pensionista’ card; otherwise you will have to pay the normal fees. Licenses are available from town halls or the Caja Rural Bank if in the Valencia region. In Murcia you will also require insurance. Make sure you take photocopies of all relevant documents to obtain your license, i.e. passport photopage, NIE and insurance.

Anglers Together was formed to introduce and encourage anglers of all abilities to meet up and get together to fish, either sea or freshwater. Firm friendships have been formed during the time the group has been active and information on fishing venues and licenses required are available at the meetings or by regular emailed newsletters.

Meetings are held in two locations each month.

Anyone with an interest in fishing (sea or freshwater) is welcome to come along to a meeting. The next meetings are: Friday11th November at 12pm at Mary’s Bar, Campoverde (near Pilar de la Horadada) Saturday 12th November at 12pm at The New Royal Bar and Restaurant at El Alamillo: opposite the sea-front between Isla Plana and Puerto de Mazarron.
