Bogus cop gang snared by James Martin POLICE HAVE snared a gang of bogus cops preying on tourists in Barcelona, Spain’s second city and a hot spot for foreign visitors. The group of Iranians and Pakistanis would flag down tourists close to hotels; asking for identification or even searching the victims - while another gang member grabbed cash or valuables – in a clever scam. Eight suspects were arrested with fears the

outfit carried out over 40 similar robberies. Cash and luxury items were seized when officers raided an address in the city on Wednesday. “The hoax they carried out could only be carried out on foreigners because anyone who lives here would understand they were not police officers from the way they behaved,” Mossos d’Esquadra Inspector Jordi Olle told the press.

A word from the Ed... Faith, hope and tragedy WITH CHRISTMAS fast approaching it is easy to forget the plight of hundreds of people following their own star and the hope of a new life in Europe, with the UK still a particular magnet. Desperate people are prepared to risk everything, putting their trust in a corrupt band of human traffickers – the only ones really benefiting from the illicit trade. Sadly, only Davy Jones knows the true number of those lost at sea but the chance of crossing borders with (expensive) fake identity papers is also on the increase as sharp-eyed police illustrated this week. Meanwhile nature is also on hand to prove her own powers of destruction as the Costa del Sol discovered last weekend; storms that took two lives. At RTN Towers we are hoping for a peaceful festive season – Mother Nature can rest up for the holiday and by doing so at least help reduce the death toll at sea. Article courtesy of The Olive Press. DEATH and destruction swept the Costa del Sol after almost a week of relentless rain. At least two people died, while hundreds more were forced to abandon their homes in fl oods of biblical proportions. Many homes were left without electricity as emergency centres were set up and the mass clean up operation got underway in dozens of towns. In the worst storms seen in Andalucia in quarter of a century, it is estimated that up to 300 litres of rain per square metre fell across the region in 72 hours. In total, it is going to cost the Junta a staggering €4 million to cover the damage to streets alone. Much of this came from landslides, while walls and bridges collapsed in some areas, leading to cars becoming trapped. Mud, rocks and dirt turned many streets into an apocalypse-esque disaster zone. Incredibly 103 litres of rain per square metre fell in just two hours in Mijas and Fuengirola, causing more than 100 landslides along the Mijas-Alhaurin road as the entire Costa del Sol was put on ‘red alert’. British expat David Blinder told the Olive Press that he has ‘never been more scared’ as he was forced to swerve between debris falling from the cliffs on either side of the MijasAlhaurin road.

“It was the scariest drive I have ever done,” he said.“At least three quarters of the road was blocked and more landslides were falling as I was driving along.” Despite a dramatic rescue attempt by scuba divers a 26-yearold prostitute drowned in a basement brothel in Estepona. Meanwhile an electrician lost his life in La Linea after heading out to repair damaged lines, only to become trapped in his van as the fl oods rose around him. Washed out cars abandoned at the height of the storm on Sunday morning still littered the streets, as further downpours continued on Monday. Many were completely submerged with their electrics badly aff ected. The fi nger has now pointed to the cause of the fl ooding, with many blaming a lack of planning to clear river beds, construction on fl oodplains and little emer emergency cover on Sunday night. A week earlier, one British expat in Fuengirola contacted the Olive Press to complain about the lack of prepara preparation work with water levels already ‘dangerously high’ in the town’s main river. He said: “The river mouth leading out into the sea has not been cleared all week despite the heavy rain. “The water levels are already very high and if nothing is done the town will be under water.” Tragically his prediction was eerily accurate as roads were cut off and houses fl ooded in Fuengirola. And it was a similar story along the coast. In Los Barrios a bridge collapsed, crushing three parked cars, while Gibraltar had 157% of its average December rainfall in 48 hours.

DEC 9 - 15 DEC 2016

rain left the Costa del Sol a disaster zone.

ooding Meanwhile, almost every home in popular Casares Marina urbanisation saw around a metre of water fl ood in. Nearby in Manilva, Dutch-run Floria beach bar was all but destroyed as high winds battered the wooden structure. In Sabinillas the A-7 underpass was left completely fl ooded, while ground fl oor homes and businesses were left in ruins on either side of the motorway. An emergency centre was set up in the town hall for fl ood victims after it was declared a disaster zone. Duquesa port saw a raging torrent fl ow right through it. In neighbouring Estepona the port was fl ooded and pretty much all frontline bars and restaurants shut up shop and spent the day bailing water. In Cartama, Jackie Minion, from Reading, was left devastated after her horse Ronnie vanished when his stables were engulfed in fl oodwater. Meanwhile, horses were forced to wade through the fl oods in San Pedro after a similar animal sanctuary was engulfed in water. Expat writer Natalie Rose Kern came home to fi nd her basement in Marbella completely underwater, with hundreds of books, clothes and other priceless possessions ruined. At least, she managed to keep her sense of humour by wearing a Wonder Woman outfi t to clear up the mess the following day. Scottish expat Kayleigh Smith meanwhile, was among a group of 20 drivers forced to reverse down the A-7 into oncoming traffi c after fl oods cut off the road.

With cars already abandoned, Smith had to head 100 metres back the way they she came as a ‘small lake’ formed on the A-7 near to Selwo zoo in Estepona. “It was terrible,” she told the Olive Press. “I had to give up trying to get to work as the A-7 was completely fl ooded and cars were already trapped in the rain. Helicopters had to be called in in Cartama to rescue a driver and his pet dog from the roof of their car as the waters rose around them. And with more rainy days forecast for the rest of the month, more fl oods could – unfortunately – be on their way.

Plans for a new fire engine by Jack Troughton VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTERS in Javea are dreaming of a new fire engine after generous donations put the purchase “within the realms of possibility”.

The ISVH Bomberos Voluntarios of Balcon al Mar received more than 40,000€ from a grateful public and organisations following the huge fires that swept across parts of the town and neighbouring Benitachell in September. And donors were welcomed to a special ‘Thanksgiving’ event to see the fire fighting equipment and inspect the fire station. The voluntary fire brigade is funded 80% by the neighbourhood association ISVH and 20% by a town hall grant. ISVH President Erich Brenner said: “It was important for the board and for the bomberos to thank personally as many of the many generous and innovative donors as possible.” And he paid tribute to the fire brigade’s Commandant Alan Lawton and his wife Emma – also a volunteer – for their tireless work at many fund raising

events. Erich added: “We have been discussing the procurement of a second fire engine for a long time in order to be able to increase our impact on large events. The estimated cost of this investment is around 100,000€.

“This is a tremendous feat for a club like ISVH...but now, thanks to the many donations, the project to procure a fire brigade vehicle has been placed within the realms of possibility. There is still a shortfall and then a long-cherished dream could come true.”

Migrants use fake ID by Jack Troughton SECURITY AT Alicante airport caught out six passengers believed to be heading for Britain using false passports as Spain witnessed a surge in migrants at its borders. National Police arrested six people at passport control at the busy Alicante-Elche Airport – five Iranians and a Moroccan; including a mother and her 13-year-old son and a couple travelling with a three-year-old child. They were held last Saturday – a day when coastguard vessels rescued 92 people from frail craft along the Spanish coastline. And another 64 migrants were found on two “rickety” craft on Tuesday – including a fiveyear-old and a baby. They were all landed at the port of Almeria and were said to be in good health. Police said the six arrested at Alicante were attempting to fly to different destinations in the UK and were carrying falsified documents from France, Cyprus, Bulgaria, Sweden and the Czech Republic. A spokesman for the National Police said: “Officers at a passport control checkpoint at Alicante airport arrested five Iranian nationals and one Moroccan national on Saturday, who were in possession of falsified travel documents. They were all due to board flights to different destinations in Britain.

“One was using a stolen document from another EU country and used it to try and board a plane; officers realised when they saw the photo on the document didn’t correspond with how the person using it looked.” The Spanish authorities last month said they had broken up am international gang said to be responsible for smuggling around 6,000 Ukrainian immigrants into the UK through a route through Eire, again using fake identity papers. BARCELONA Police say over 100 people were held; including an important lieutenant arrested in a raid on a Barcelona, a man believed to have

touted for clients, while a suspected ‘Mr Big’ slipped through the net in London and is on the run. And Tuesday’s rescue took place in the Alboran Sea – the most westerly part of the Mediterranean – after the Spanish authorities were alerted by Moroccan colleagues. A rescue operation was mounted after reports a “makeshift” boat with 33 people on board had departed from Tazarine, just west of the Spanish enclave of Melilla. A helicopter, a plane, and a ship were used in the search; which discovered a second vessel with a further 31 people on board. Spain remains one of the main migrant

routes into Europe from North Africa with desperate migrants paying a fortune to mafia gangs before risking their lives. The government – concerned about illegal immigration - has pushed for urgent United Nations action against people traffickers. It is supported by Italy, also a migration ‘destination’. Increased ‘waves’ of people packed into increasingly fragile boats have been leaving the coast of Libya and Morocco in a bid to reach the West. Traffickers continue to attempt to outwit international navies patrolling the Mediterranean and have continued operations into the more dangerous winter months.

homeless in Spain and it is a rich country.” She said she and an international team of five had formed an association to open the shop and it was open Monday to Friday between 10am and 1pm. “We represent all nationalities, it is a very international community here in Spain and our customers are very international as well,” said Monika. “I love working in the shop, it’s great fun.”

United boss denies tax scam MANCHESTER UNITED manager Jose Mourinho has issued a statement through representatives denying allegations he was part of a tax avoidance scheme. by James martin The 53-year-old coach was accused of using offshore accounts in the British Virgin Islands to avoid paying tax on millions of Euros in earnings from image rights and product endorsements. Mourinho’s representatives, sports agency Gestifute, have denied the manager or Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo – also a client – were part of any wrongdoing. The allegations surfaced when the European Investigative Collaborations consortium, which includes a number of media organisations, obtained and published information from two terabytes of leaked information. And it is understood more sports stars will be named in coming weeks in information passed on by the whistle blowers ‘Football Leaks’. It was alleged that Mourinho had moved large sums of money to the tax haven of the Virgin Islands in a bid to outfox the British and Spanish revenue authorities. Ronaldo, who played under the Mourinho regime at Real Madrid, was also accused of moving money to the Virgin Islands in, what The Sunday Times called: “highly aggressive tax avoidance”. On Tuesday evening the official website of Gestifute published a rebuttal it called ‘Statement from Jose Mourinho’ following ongoing speculation. It read: “Mr Jose Mourinho, who lived in Spain from June 2010 to May 2013, paid more than 26 million euros in taxes, with an average tax rate of over 41 per cent.” “As he stated last week, the Spanish government, through its Tax Agency, has certified that he is up to date on his tax obligations.”

Allegations against Mourinho and Ronaldo first appeared on Saturday, Gestifute immediately denied their clients had done anything wrong. A statement by the sports agency said: “Both Cristiano Ronaldo and José Mourinho are fully compliant with their tax obligations with the Spanish and British tax authorities.

“Neither Cristiano Ronaldo nor José Mourinho have ever been involved in legal proceedings regarding the commission of a tax offence. “Any insinuation or accusation made to Cristiano Ronaldo or José Mourinho over the commission of a tax offence will be reported to the legal authorities and prosecuted.”

No translation needed by Jack Troughton THE AFPO Interpreters Group celebrated the 10th anniversary of the launch of the highly valued translation service based at Calpe’s Centro de Salud. The AFPO team boasts 17 volunteers and between them speak five languages and are busy helping others between 9am and noon – the team can be found at a desk to the right of the reception area at the health centre. Pictured at the party at the Agua Marina Restaurant are members of the team and Doctora Ortuna, who is the health centre’s administrator. They stage regular meetings together to discuss how the service is run. And AFPO President Keith Wildman said: “The service is very much appreciated by patients and staff alike; and we receive many positive comments from them. “Many of our volunteers have been with us from the inception of the service and now feel very much part of the health centre.” New volunteers are always made welcome. Valencia’s Councillor for Public Works Maria Jose Salvador (left) is pictured with Teulada-Moraira Mayor Carlos Linares (right) at Teulada Station. Currently the Line Number 9 service only runs between Benidorm and Alfaz del Pi – the line terminates at Denia but essential engineering work has taken the popular commuter and visitor service out of action. The visit coincided with work beginning at Teulada Station, part of a 6.4 million Euro project to update stations. Mr Linares underlined how important it was to complete the project and was assured that at present, everything was on track.

EU triggers action over VW THE EUROPEAN Union has launched legal action against seven countries – including Spain and the UK – over the Volkswagen emissions scandal. by Jack Troughton Great Britain, Spain, Germany and Luxembourg are accused of failing to take action against the company despite millions of cars being involved in the deception, governments have two months to respond. In the United States the German car giant has been hit with huge fines over the use of ‘defeat devices’ installed to hide the true level of emissions in tests. And another three countries - the Czech Republic, Lithuania and Greece – face EU action for failing to include the possibility of fines as a sanction over potential violations of standards. Both Germany and the UK also face being called to account by the European Commission over their refusal to share the details of emissions laws they discovered through their own investigations. Industry commissioner Elzbieta Bienkowska said in a statement: “National authorities across the EU must ensure that car manufacturers actually comply with the law.” Under EU law, member states have a duty to

declare whether cars meet standards. Investigations uncovered the use of cheat devices, but no action has been taken against VW. The manufacturer employs 120,000 people in Germany with almost 500,000 workers elsewhere around the world. The company has already agreed to pay $15bn in a settlement with US authorities and owners of about 500,000 vehicles after the software cheat was exposed - but to date, European nations have taken no such steps. About 11 million cars worldwide were fitted with the hi-tech software – and the deception forced down the price of VW shares on stock markets. As a result is facing an 8.2 billion Euro claim for damages from 1,400 German investors. Australia has also launched legal action against the carmaker, while asset manager Blackrock and a group of institutional shareholders said they would sue for 2 billion Euros. The VW group comprises 12 brands from seven European countries: Volkswagen passenger cars, Audi, Seat, Skoda, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Porsche, Ducati, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, Scania and MAN.

Revenge is sweet for La Vila

LA VILA proved a point by trouncing CAU Valencia 54-12 – the side who were responsible for eliminating them from last season’s play offs on a player registration technicality. by Tony Fox The television cameras of Mediterraneo TV screened the game live; helping ensure the joys of the oval ball reached a wider audience. Some excellent refereeing saw that the game did not degenerate into a war of attrition. Fierce tackling from both sides at the start set the tone. And after just three minutes La Vila opened the score with a converted try. In the wind and rain the strong home side pack showed their superiority in all departments, going at half time 24-0. The second half was much of the same although CAU did score two tries, converting one. In doing so they showed up a defensive weakness on the right flank of La Vila, but this was not enough to subdue them and they went on to score another 30 points in the testing conditions. However La Vila did blot their copy book in the final minutes when temper got the better of two of their players resulting in one yellow and one red card. They are now 9 points clear at the top of their division with their next game in Valencia against Tecnidex, currently in mid-division, on Saturday (10th December). Kick-off is at 4pm. Try scorers for La Vila: Martinez (2), Pajuajis (2), Perayero, Poggi, de Matias and Jara, who converted all but one of the tries.

Skiers in uphill battle NATIVE AMERICANS are taking on the developers of a ski resort in Canada’s highest court in a landmark battle over religious freedom. by Jack Troughton The Ktunaxa First Nation say building the British Columbia resort would desecrate land which his home to the sacred ´Grizzly Bear Spirit’ and wants the Supreme Court to rule on the dispute. In March 2012, the government of British Columbia approved the Jumbo Glacier resort planned in a remote valley. The region is popular with off-piste skiers and snowboarders – known for its wilderness and natural beauty, it is also grizzly bear territory. However, the Ktunaxa Nation has fought the plan since it was first proposed in 1991 and has lost a series of hearings in lower courts; maintaining the planners have failed to properly consider the sacred significance of the area. The Ktunaxa say the site, they call it ´Qat’muk´ is “where the Grizzly Bear Spirit was born, goes to heal itself, and returns to the spirit world.” They argue should the resort be built, they would lose access to the spirit and its guidance. John Paterson, Director of the British Columbia Civil Liberties Association, believes it is the first time First Nation spirituality has been considered in planning decisions. “People would understand is this were a proposal that would destroy the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem or the Temple Mount,” he added. The developers say they still hope to build a glacier skiing destination in the valley – and said they have attempted to accommodate the local community´s views.

Designed by local wonder woman, Jody Bell, who herself was awarded for her charity work in founding the Grant A Wish charity, the collection was straight off the catwalk of New York as well as a sneak preview as Jody Bell also showcased the Spring/Summer 2017 collection. After the models had strutted their stuff along the catwalk, it was down to ‘A Woman on Purpose’ Alexandra Gold to officially welcome the guests. Working in helping women find their purpose and create the life of their dreams, Alexandra was the perfect person to be one of the judges in the awards. She said: “I had no idea how hard that job would be and I know that, along with my fellow judges we were left in awe, in admiration and completely overwhelmed by the level of commitment, dedication and passion that all of the finalists displayed making our decisions so very hard. I am truly humbled to be able to be a part of such a deserved event.” Created by GM Promotions, the awards recognised individuals and companies in various categories. Expertly hosted by Giles Brown from Talk Radio Europe, he was joined by main event sponsors HiFX and award sponsors TRE Talk Radio Europe; Currencies Direct; Avalon; H2O Hair and Beauty Academy; Vintage Cafe and Aldertons Property Finders, in presenting the stunning awards and a bouquet of flowers to each deserving winner before guests danced the night away to the amazing vocals of Sharni.

Property law, the concept of ‘usufruct’ in Spain WE FREQUENTLY receive queries in our offi ce from clients who want to donate property to their children as a gift but they would still like to be able to keep the use of it during their life time. ANOTHER COMMON question is about the possibility of helping their children to buy a property in Spain but, again, allowing the parents to have the right to use it. In these cases, it is fundamental to understand the concept of ‘USUFRUCTO’ - since it is absolutely possible to make a donation of property and reserve the right to use it, or to buy a property with our children and acquire its use. In Spanish law this is known as the bare ownership, that is the right of ownership strictly speaking without its possession, nor its use. The ‘usufruct’ is defined in the Spanish Civil Code, in its article 467 as: ‘the right to enjoy the property of others with the obligation to preserve its form and substance.’ The holder of the ‘usufruct’, called the ‘usufructuary’, has the right to use the thing, to receive all the fruits of it, to lease it to another person, and to transfer this usufruct right. But the contracts signed by the ‘usufructuary’ will be terminated at the end of its term: for example, the beneficiary of a lifetime usufruct, upon death means all the contracts

signed will end, and the owner, will recover the full ownership of the property, that means the bare ownership and the usufruct. The ‘usufruct’, for example on a property, could be set out in law in some cases, and in most cases by the will or agreement of the owners. It could be on just a part or the whole property, in favour of one or more people, and could be limited in time. It is common in some wills, to appoint as heirs the children or descendants - either because it is usually tax efficient or for any other reason - and leave the ‘usufruct’ to the spouse - in order to make sure that although the children will inherit the property, the spouse will be able to use it, including renting it, usually until their death.

And it is important to know how the right of ‘usufruct’ works and understand that sometimes it can be very useful to simplify an inheritance, to protect the rights of use of a specific person to make sure they will have the continued right to use a property. If you have any doubts about this, about the legal, tax implications of the ‘usufruct’, contact us and we will help you.

Things are about to change as the current static period has produced nothing and the stalemate has taken away your confidence in dealing with what you now must face up to with impunity! Aroused by both the energy of the Sun and the pace of Ceres as they trine midweek, the power is coming into your court and you must accordingly be decisive and constructive. Ceres governs timetables and the natural rhythm of the seasons, so after this trine your way ahead is sure to be an exciting and exhilarating journey onwards! Mercury sextiles Neptune midweek and this astrological action heralds an investigation into your finances. It is not just a matter of tightening your belt after a pre Christmas shopping spree, but an adjustment that sees everyone fairly and squarely sharing their financial obligations. Someone just isn’t paying their way right now. Things have been said and you are hurt by implications this week. Though somebody is being economical with the real truth of the matter; all those people who really love you know you, and just what you are capable of. The current phase of Moon should see that that somebody will get their comeuppance. What goes around..... As the Sun sets on a trine with dwarf planet Kora your deeply psychic energies are unleashed. Things are happening and your innermost self is guiding you quite clearly in another direction right now. Go with the flow and if it feels right for you then go for it! You are free thinking and spiritually open and this is too good an opportunity to miss! You are indecisive and waiting for something to happen rather then making it happen. Life is a two way street and you are good to go right now. Focus on your artistic side and realise that your talent is a gift for you to share anyway you want to. Mercury supports new aspects and opens all channels of communication for you after the Neptune sextile

As the Sun takes on Uranus you begin to realise, in hindsight, why things had to turn out the way that they did. It is important that you know that your heart and soul are calling out for resolve; as stress and strain have affected them greatly. Time to think of yourself for a change. This is not selfish but it’s self preserving and you need some T.L.C.! Minor irritating things have sent you off on a wild goose chase and it is very difficult to reason why things have taken a turn for the worse. However Mars is currently crossing the Zodiac to enter into Piscean energy, and this means a very quick solution to everything; and some strong spiritual support, which is called for, is very much on its way As Jupiter sextiles the Sun it cannot help but to send a loving protection directly to you. Illuminated by the Sun, and driven by the luckiest and most fortunate of planets the combined energies are sent freely to enable you to take a step closer to your dreams now. When opportunities beckon you on and a door opens for you, then enter in! Saturn intervenes with a vulnerary conjunction with the Sun. This action is both liberating and illuminating as you are encouraged to make plans both in the long term and the short term. Changes will help you see what you are really missing out on and these will help to pave the way to new horizons, and a new way of seeing you, yourself too! Uranus, planet of Invention and Technology takes on a trine with the Sun this week. This action serves to activate your curiosity and breaks down any barriers that you may have in taking on a new opportunity. You are gifted and your talents are many; but you often do not believe fully in yourself, and doubt stops so much happening for you. With Neptune in cahoots with Mercury, clear vibrations are working together with your innermost energies to bring about your highly creative source. The times sure are a changing for you and all aspects point towards you reconnecting spiritually and loving yourself enough to allow change to bring you all you so rightly deserve and need.

KENNY, SO many of my family have passed over during the Christmas season, and I feel guilty celebrating when I should be remembering them! Anita L. Anita, we can still remember our friends and family that are no longer here on Earth to celebrate with us. They would wish us to continue the celebration, though they may enjoy a special toast dedicated to them. My mother died on Christmas Day but I do not mourn her passing, and she would not want me to be anything but happy on what was, to her, a very special day to be enjoyed. Light a festive candle for your departed loved ones; your private message can be sent with love, directly to them.

If It’s Your Birthday This Week THE WINDS of change are blowing in your direction right now. This may certainly awaken your perceptions, but it is action and not words that are needed to enable you right now!

Removing ‘nation zoom’

HI AUNTY: Hope you can help with this one. I have a laptop with Windows 8 and the other day a Java update popped up. After I updated it, I have now got a ‘nation zoom’ home page and everything has gone very slow and not working properly. Thanks in advance for any help – John. Aunty says: You need to do two things: remove the ‘nationzoom’ software from your PC and then reset your home page and search engine options in your internet browser. By following these instructions you can change your browser settings back to normal: Remove Nation Zoom from Add/Remove Programs. For that: 1. Click Start -> Control Panel -> Programs (or Add/Remove Programs) -> Uninstall a Program. 2.Here, look for Wsys Control, Extended

Protection, eSave Security Control, Desk 365, Nation Zoom browser protection and similar entries and select ‘Uninstall/Change’. 3.Click OK to save the changes. Fix each of your Internet browsers: Internet Explorer: 1. Open Internet Explorer, go ‘Tools’ -> ”Manage Add-ons’ -> ‘Toolbars and Extensions’ and uninstall these extensions: Wsys Control, Extended Protection, eSave Security Control, Desk 365, Nation Zoom browser protection. 2. Click ’Tools’ -> ‘Manage addons’ -> ‘Search Providers’ and choose the search engine you used before. Mozilla Firefox: 1. Open Mozilla Firefox, go ‘Tools’ -> ‘Addons’ -> ‘Extensions’; find these extensions and click ‘Uninstall’: Wsys Control, Extended Protection, eSave Security Control, Desk 365, Nation Zoom browser protection. 2. Go ‘Tools’ -> ‘Options’ and reset the startup homepage to google.com, yahoo.com or similar search page. Google Chrome: 1.Click the Chrome menu button, select ‘Tools’ -> ‘Extensions’, find Wsys Control, Extended Protection, eSave Security Control, Desk 365, Nation Zoom browser protection and other unknown extensions, and remove them by clicking Recycle bin. 2. Right-click the desktop shortcut, select ‘Properties’ and find Nation Zoom in the ‘Target box’. Select ‘Apply’ and then click OK to save changes. 3. Now click ‘Settings’ -> ‘Manage search engines’ and change your default search engine.

Yahoo Deactivated DEAR AUNTY: I recently set up this Yahoo mail account. I also have another one. Several times when trying to enter, the message comes up ‘your ‘Yahoo mail account has been deactivated’. Why? I use it frequently. I understand if it is not used for six months it will be deactivated, but I only used it yesterday! It’s hard to contact Yahoo about this – can’t seem to email them. I have reactivated it, but don’t want this to keep on occurring. Marion Aunty says: Perhaps one reason the account has been deactivated is that the account has been compromised and is sending out SPAM emails to all and sundry. Next time you get access, change your password to a more complicated one. I found this on the internet from yahoo help site: You need to contact Yahoo by email: This can be done by clicking on Help at the Bottom Right Hand side of the Yahoo page. Click on Mail, or whatever one is best for you, then go to the Bottom Right hand side of page and click on ‘GET HELP’ to contact Customer Care. Click on Category, page will reload for you to click on Sub Category. Make sure you fill in Brief Details of what has happened: click Enter. Depending on the Category you select and the Sub Category you also select you should then see at the Bottom of the Page for more help Click on EMAIL A SUPPORT AGENT. There will be a form to fill in. Yahoo will then contact you at a Different Email Address you need to give them. This email address CANNOT be a yahoo email one. You could give them a different email address you already have or you will need to create a new one, Google, Hotmail, etc. They need this other email address to give you instructions regarding your yahoo account. You will also be asked to create a new password.

In the last few years Neater Heaters have become the first choice of many ex-pats living in Spain Behind our stylish Scandinavian designs are a modern state-of-theart convector heater that can match any on the market for economy and efficiency, and beats all the serious competition hands down on price. The real secret of these heaters is the computer-age technology in the form of extruded aluminium in the construction of the heating element. This material and the design creates a huge surface area for heat transfer, which means more air can be heated for less cost. Neater Heaters use Convection principals and are designed so that the electricity you put into the heater is converted to heat as cheaply as possible. When you turn on the heater the element warms up rapidly and heats the air around it, this air rises and draws more cold air into the heater. Because the element is extremely efficient and is designed to have a huge surface area a large quantity of air is heated very quickly. If your room has the correct sized heater it will take about twenty minutes to warm up from cold, after which the heater eases off and works at about two thirds capacity, (depending on various external influences). Our heaters are not only efficient, effective, and economical, but as you would expect from a Scandina-

vian product, they are extremely stylish and practical. There is a model that will suit anyone, whether it is the standard Adax Heater, the stylish Beha Heater, or the trendy Neo with digital controls and a choice of colours and if you are limited for wall space then available for purchase are factory designed feet to enable the heater to be freestanding. However, this year we have gone one stage further. We are now sole agents in Spain for the Turkish made Vigo heater. This heater shares the design technology and ethos of the current Neater Heaters, but it has two differences: The Vigo comes with a carrying handle, wall bracket, and feet included in the price; The larger Vigo models take up less wall space and go up to 2.5kw. They also have a digital display that indicates the reduced wattage that the heater regulates once the room has reached desired temperature, thus saving more money through reduced running costs.” For information on the entire Neater Heater range, and to find your nearest dealer………. please visit our website www.neaterheater.es or telephone 634312171

Harry decides it’s time to take the high road! Prince Harry is a second born son, and as such has had to deal with the big bro syndrome all his life, something he responded to a tad ´out there´ at times, but now that Wills is on the path to the throne of England, ´H ´seems to have decided to leave his high octane lifestyle behind him. ITV have made a documentary on Harry that will be part of their Christmas scheduling. The film will follow him on his journey back to Lesotho, the African country where he set up the charity Sentebale in 2006. Sue Murphy, Head of Factual Entertainment on ITV, said: “It’s fascinating to observe Prince Harry from boy to man, to see him following in his mother’s humanitarian footsteps and to witness his undeniable commitment and passion for his work in Africa.” Fine words indeed! Harry also talks about his reasons for founding the charity in 2006 and his hopes for the future of his work on the continent. I do believe there are also some extremely light moments in the programme, so check out your telly guide well in advance!

YOUR LIST of ´definite´s´ for your Xmas viewing will be filling up nicely I´d imagine, I know mine is, especially as I´ve just added ´Jonathan Creek´ on BBC1 at 9pm on 28th December. Alan Davies will return as 19th-century wizard Jacob Surtees for a 90-minute special, and the word is that it’s the ‘spookiest episode ever!’ Fan-Dabbie-Dozzie! The episode also stars Sarah Alexander, Warwick Davis, Rosalind March, Emun Elliott and Ken Bones, and picks up a century and a half after the sorcerer’s death as he preys on victims in Daemon’s Roost home … AAHH!! The BBC’s Controller of Comedy Shane Allen said “the shows unique blend of dark comedy and crime drama since its debut nearly 20 years ago has evolved into a class act and an evergreen favourite with the audience.” To help you pad out the time till Dec 28, check out the iconic theme tune. Jonathan Creek Complete Theme Tune

IN 1964 Italian tyre manufacturer Pirelli came up with a clever idea to put out a calendar for their important customers and VIPs featuring world famous models and celebrities. Speaking at the international press launch in Paris on the plans for the 2017 calendar, 72 year old photographer Peter Lindbergh made his intention for the images very clear saying his aim was not to shoot a calendar about perfect bodies, but to capture sensitivity and emotion, laying bare the souls of the women in the images, rendering them more naked than a nude.” Is it me or is everybody waxing extremely lyrical today. The calendar highlights Lindbergh’s love for the big screen as his models feature the likes of Nicole Kidman, Uma Thurman, Lupita Nyong’o, Kate Winslet and Penelope Cruz ... it’s a tough life being a photographer eh? Lindbergh added “as an artist, I feel I have a responsibility to free women from the idea of eternal youth and perfection.” What a hero!

ROD STEWART, was born at 507 Archway Road, Highgate, North London on 10 January 1945, and the boys done good as he is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, having sold over 100 million records worldwide. If you are a fan, best get onto the Isle Of Wight Festival promoters smartly, as ´Rod the Mod´ will be one of the headline acts. Speaking of his Sunday June 11 spot Rod said “I´ve been very lucky to have played many of the world’s finest venues and festivals, but never played the legendary LOW Festival, I´m so excited to put that right.” Festival Promoter, John Giddings said “I’ve wanted Rod to play at the festival for a number of years; he’s had a career that spans five decades so it’s impossible not to be a fan.” I bang on a lot about these coming events saying how you should treat yourself, so … Get on the internet booking line mas pronto!?

Playing the lead in The Buddy Holly Story in1978, Gary Busey was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor, but did win the National Society of Film Critics Award. He starting making films in 1968 when he was 24, and has made 122 altogether. But why he´s here today is not about movies, but about 1988 when he was in a motorcycle accident that nearly cost him his life. He´s claiming it did cost him his life, saying he’s been to heaven and has actually spoken with angels! … Honest! “It’s beautiful over there” said Gary “I was surrounded by angels which are big balls of light, amber, magenta and gold, and three lights came up to me.” Holy Moly! He said that one of the angels, or lights, said to him … “you’re there to find the truth of yourself, become your own best friend, and it’s just lovely!” Now that I like … a lot! Go Gazza Go!

She ruined my wedding My sister always likes to steal the attention, and my wedding day was no exception. First of all she fake sneezed all through the vows, then at the Reception she got drunk and started getting up on the tables, dancing and singing at the top of her voice. I’d said to Mum that I didn’t want her to be bridesmaid because I suspected she would do something like this. Now she keeps asking me did I enjoy my wedding. I haven’t said anything, but I am so upset. It’s like she is pushing me to confront her about it. Families honestly! It does seems as though she might have done these things on purpose. If you think she’s goading you to have it out with her, then try not to give her the satisfaction. She’d be more annoyed if you said you hadn’t noticed her trying to steal the show. I think you’ll have to put this down to the fact that she was jealous and childish. She may mature with age and regret what she did, but that’s for her to live with. Write to Sara in confidence. A pseudonym will be used if you wish. Sara reads all letters and can give a personal reply. Email your question to agonyaunt@roundtownnews.com or Sara is available for private consultations, telephone 650 054 467.

He’s put on weight We hadn’t seen our son for nearly two years as he’s been travelling and working abroad. We went to meet him at the Airport on his return, and my husband and I were so shocked to see he had put on a lot of weight - about four stone! He used to be such a fit, trim young man. He is having to buy trousers with an elasticated waist now. We want to say something, but don’t want to hurt his feelings. It’s a difficult conversation to broach isn’t it, however I believe as parents we have a duty to talk frankly with our children about any kind of health issue, and weight gain is a serious one. Try not to dwell on the fact that he looks unattractive, but rather point out the implications to his health first of all. He may well be offended, but he is at risk of diabetes and heart problems if the situation gets worse. May be buy him a Gym membership for Christmas!

Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin

Indirect object pronouns WE ARE currently learning about “Indirect Object Pronouns” and in the last article I gave you a very brief recap of what “Direct Object Pronouns” are so that you are at least aware of the difference. As with many grammatical terms, the function is expressed in the name. “Object” always refers to the person or thing which receives the action of a verb, “pronoun” is something that replaces a noun and we say “indirect” because the action of the verb is received “indirectly”, of course. We finished last week with the example in English: “The boy throws it to her” (we were talking about a ball). We can label the words like this – “the boy” is the subject; “throw” is the verb; “it” is the direct object pronoun (receiving the “direct” action of “throw”) and “her” is the indirect object pronoun (receiving the “indirect” action of the verb – in other words, the person to whom the ball is thrown). We finished off by saying that the most difficult thing about this in Spanish is the word order, as it is literally: “The boy to her it throws” – “El niño se la tira” (“it” here is “la” because it is the pronoun replaces the feminine word “la pelota”). We can make matters even worse (just stick with me for a couple more sentences) by substituting “the boy” for the subject pronoun “he”. In English we now have “He throws it to her”.

Put into Spanish word order we have: “He to her it throws” which is “Él se la tira”. However, as you know, in Spanish we often miss out the subject pronoun “Él”. So the end result is the three word sentence: “se la tira” (to her – it – throws). On its own “se la tira” makes about as much sense as Egyptian hieroglyphics, which leads me to my next, very important, point. The whole reason for pronouns is that they replace nouns that we already know about. Going back to the sentence “He throws it to her” – this is completely meaningless in English as well unless you know who he is, who she is (that is “her”) and what it is. In other words, a sentence which contains pronouns in any language is a sort of shorthand which only makes sense to people who have some prior information. This is why you can never understand what people are talking about at the next table in a restaurant. It’s because they’re saying things like: “Well I told him about it, but he said that she didn’t agree with them” and unless you know what all those pronouns refer to, it all sounds like gibberish. There you are, and you thought it was because your Spanish was rubbish! Next time you’re with someone who says “You’re learning Spanish, what are those people talking

about?” You can say: “I don’t know because they’re using too many direct and indirect object pronouns”. That should shut them up for a bit. Okay, so here are the Indirect Object Pronouns in Spanish: Me Nos Te Os Le (or “se”) Les (or “se”) To finish off, here are some sentences using the first and second person Indirect Object Pronouns for you to ponder over: “Me lo dio” (he or she gave it to me); “Te lo mandaron” (they sent it to you); “¿nos lo dijiste?” (Did you tell us (it)?) “Os la pasé” (“I passed it to you: “it” being something feminine like “la sal” (the salt). See you next week, but be warned, we’ll be tackling “le” “les” and “se”.

Don’t Be Knockin’ The Rockin’ by

Chris Ashley

Writer & Broadcaster

KEVIN JOHNSON an obscure Australian balladeer in 1974 warbled “Rock And Roll (I Gave You The Best Years Of My Life)” Strewth cobber, so did I, the first time I heard a strange alien named Elvis singing about ‘Heartbreak Hotel’ on Radio Luxembourg, The Great 208. The moment I heard ‘The King’ I wanted in. The pelvic thrust (steady), the curled lip, the oily pompadour, the adoration of Ann-Margret his VERY close co-star in ‘Viva Las Vegas’- the whole deal (not too keen on snuffing it on the khazi however). Sadly I was a spotty teenage oik & these ambitions were mere unsettling dreams, especially the pelvic thrust segment. UK rock ‘n’ roll was in the main second rate compared to the US. For every Little Richard,

us Brits had Cliff Richard (although ‘Move It’ is still a top rocker). For Ricky Nelson, a vastly underrated Rockabilly singer, I give you Ricky Valence. Our Welsh warbler’s cover version of Ray Peterson’s already wrist slitting rhapsody ‘Tell Laura I Love Her’ was even more depressing - imagine a wet miserable Monday in Merthyr. Eddie Cochran? The best we could offer up? - Jess Conrad. Bearing in mind in the 70’s Kenny Everett compiled an album of the World’s Worst Records & of the 20 Jess had 3 – ‘This Pullover’ - ‘Why Am I Living?’ - ‘Cherry Pie’. Many years later, during an interview at his large Home Counties pad I rather snidely pointed this out to Jess. He languidly replied “My dear chap, look at my gardens” They were huge, a thing of Capability Brown bucolic beauty. “Yes,,very impressive” I

replied. “Well the ‘Turtleneck’ tune bought them. The Olympic size swimming pool? The ‘Suicide’ song paid for it. And my Rolls Royce? The ‘Dessert’ ditty purchased that with change left over for a cabin cruiser.” Never mind your Cherry Pie Jess – I’m choking on this humble one. By the by – The #1 World’s Worst Record as anointed by the Gospel According to Kenny was a toe tapping (or curling) tune by one Jimmy Cross called ‘I Want My Baby Back’ which alluded to an extremely deviant activity which would upset Great Aunt Mabel if I mentioned it here, & as she’s the one with all the Ashley ackers - You Tube it to get the drift. At least Jess stuck with more prosaic matters like Aran, Angst & Afters. Any Rock ‘n’ Roll reminiscences from you always welcome; ashleybobble@hotmail.com

Slow cooker turkey breasts with wine & bacon If you like the idea of Christmas turkey but often find it dry, then you must try this. The tender turkey is wrapped in bacon then braised in a slow cooker Ingredients 1 small turkey breast crown, approx 1.9kg, skin and breasts removed to make 2 large 800g-900g breast fillets (your butcher will do this for you if you’re unsure how to prepare) 16 rashers smoked streaky bacon 2 tbsp fresh thyme leaves, plus extra to serve if you like 1 tbsp sunflower oil 1 onion, halved and thickly sliced 2 carrots, sliced 2 bay leaves 15g dried porcini mushrooms 150ml dry white wine 500ml chicken stock (we used a Knorr chicken stock pot) 2 tbsp plain flour

your first string, twisting them around the main string so they connect in the centre. Lay 8 rashers of bacon, in the same direction across and slightly overlapping on top. Scatter with a tablespoon of the thyme and grind over some black pepper.

Method Lay a length of string twice the length of the turkey fillet on a chopping board. Arrange 4 more lengths of string large enough to tie round the width of the fillet at intervals across

Add the onion and carrots to the pan and cook until starting to colour. Tip the vegetables into the slow cooker and add the bay leaves and mushrooms then arrange the turkey fillets on top. Pour the wine and stock into the frying pan,

Place a turkey fillet on top of the bacon then wrap the bacon around it and tie the string at the top to keep it in place. Snip off any excess string with scissors. Heat the oil in a large frying pan and fry the fillet on all sides until browned then remove from the pan. While browning the first fillet wrap and tie the other one then brown that too. Set aside with the other breast.

bring to a rapid boil then pour in to the slow cooker, cover and cook on LOW for 3-4 hours until it is tender or a meat thermometer reads 75C. Remove the turkey breasts onto a plate and cover with foil. Stir the flour with 4 tbsp water to make a smooth liquid. Strain the cooking juices into a pan, stir in the sieved flour and whisk over the heat to make a thin gravy. Serve with the sliced turkey breasts and traditional vegetables and accompaniments. If taking the turkey to the table on a platter, scatter with a little thyme and grind over some black pepper.

Specsavers Opticas Collect Gifts for the Children of EMAUS Specsavers Opticas in Javea and Calpe have a long standing relationship with The Friends of the Children of EMAUS, joining forces with them back in 2011 to provide free eye tests and glasses for their children. THEY ARE supporting them once again, by being part of their drive to collect gifts for the children in the home. Christmas is a particularly difficult time for these vulnerable children, so this campaign will fill a Santa’s sack with presents for each of the 100 children in the EMAUS homes, to really brighten up their Christmas and put a smile on their faces. They are asking for CDs, toiletries, games, school stationery and other school equipment, gloves, scarves and hats suitable for babies and children up to 18 years old. No need to wrap the items, simply drop them into Specsavers Opticas in Javea or Calpe during December. “If everyone could buy just one extra present when they are out doing their Christmas shopping and donate it to a child in need, it would make a huge difference” Mike Stone from Specsavers Opticas Javea, “we hope people will get involved and make this a wonderful Christmas for the children of EMAUS.” To find your nearest Specsavers visit www.specsavers.es to find out more about EMAUS visit www.fcemaus.es

Inflammation: getting the source BEFORE THINKING about getting to the source of inflammation it is important that we understand why it happens and how inflammation helps the human body. Commonly known as swelling, inflammation is always a sign of distress or damage to body tissue. The overall objective of inflammation is to repair the damaged tissue. The process first begins by allowing local blood vessels to dilate. This in turn allows an array of specialised blood cells to migrate to the area and clean up the damaged cells before repairing them. Low-level inflammation is constantly happening in our bodies to repair low-level damage. However, it is when this inflammation reaches a certain level that symptoms begin to appear. These symptoms include pain, redness and the accumulation of fluid in the damaged area. If the cause of the swelling was a one time event

then the body will prove to be effective at controlling this. However if the cause of the inflammation persists, measures should be taken. Let’s take the human spine for example. We will all have woken up one morning after a bad night sleep with neck pain or lower back pain, and throughout the day the body would take care of this. But what happens if for many years we sleep in a bad position? Or day after day we sit slouched on the couch or in front of the computer? This is where a more chronic type of inflammation develops. Many treatments are effective at treating the symptom of inflammation, such as massage or pain killers. At Gonstead Chiropractic Center in Alicante or Denia we look to see if a shift in your spine, due to bad postures, could be the cause of chronic inflammation. Chiropractic care can help you prevent inflammation by fixing the problem from the root.

Watford’s Pereyra plus 2 Manchester City Players Fernandinho and Sergio Aguero all received their marching orders. The 136 Managers who selected the little Argentina striker will not be happy because his score this week is a minus 5. As the Premier League race for the title begins to hot up we can say the same can be said of the A.F.F.L. where Andrew’s team Big Tymers are coming under pressure from our top Ladies team Joanna’s Hup Hannah City who are now only 14 points behind the Leaders.Lee’s team Walkden Town’s hope for a top four finish is looking good as they climbed up 12 places to 4th.Unfortunately the same can’t be said at bottom as Kevin’s El.Portet Elite have been cut adrift of the other teams down there, the distance now being 60 points. Ant & Brad have been top of our U.K.T.V.SPAIN Junior League for the last 9 weeks and although they have slipped down to 5th position in the main League they have strengthened their grip at the top over Leo’s team 6 In a Row.At the other end of the table Charlotte’s Arm Wavers United have swapped places with Nathan’s F2 Freestylers and are now in the bottom spot. Joanna’s Hup Hannah City have remained at the top of our Mark Carter Ladies Section for the 2nd week running while stretching their advantage to 17 points over Julie’s team The

Gers who top scored in this Section with a tally of 54 points which as put her in the running for our 20 euro voucher sponsored by Quick Save the only British Supermarket in Albir. They lead Shelley’s team Funsize Hammers by 12 points. Down at the very foot of the table 3 teams are in contention for the Wooden Spoon.Jo Jo Wants a Dog,Angies Blues and Spanish Smoggies are separated by only 2 points. With so many goals being scored it meant that there were plenty of points to be had in our Leonard Knowles Construction Golden Boot League.Lee’s Walkden Town became the 5th team to reach the Summit of this very popular League. Dave’s Juke Box Mackems moved up 2 places to 2nd while last weeks leaders Eric’s Peaky Blinders slumped down to 3rd place. There was not much action at the bottom of this Section where El.Portet Elite still trail Jo Jo Wants a Dog by 12 points. We have 3 teams this week going into our Wyndham’s Monthly Wine Draw and they are this weeks top scoring team Dave’s Juke Box Mackems who collected 65 points and 2 teams who finished up with the lowest score who were James’s Mylon Minions and Trish’s Springwater Boys who both scored a minus 6. Needless to say both teams had Sergio Aguero in their line up. Manager of the Month for December is being kindly sponsored by ELIDAS top Restaurant in Albir who provide high quality Steaks in pleasant surroundings. With only 1 week gone in what will be a busy Month Juke Box Mackems have taken an early 8 point lead over Grahem’s team Benivorm. Then we have 4 teams in joint 3rd position The Gers,A Piece of Texas,Deportivaclarkuruna and Hannah’s Hotspurs who are

all in contention for this super meal for 2. Grahem’s Benivorm have won this weeks Breakfast for 2 at Two C’s in Alfaz after leaping up 75 places to Number 86 in the main League. This weekend the 2nd round of our RTN K.O.Cup Competition takes place so good luck to all the Managers who are taking part Don;t forget to follow your Teams progress in the cup as well as the League by logging onto our website which is www.alfazffl.com

Stay Bright at Night The FederaciĂłn Internacional de Automovilismo, or FIA, has launched an awareness campaign using the hashtag #StayBright, aiming to educate pedestrians and cyclists on the importance of visibility on the roads. As part of the campaign, the FIA has enlisted the help of a number of “starâ€? drivers, such as racing legend Fernando Alonso. They have also developed a variety of support material which they hope will get the message across in a fun way, by using comics and videos. It is hoped in particular that younger road users will learn about the importance of high visibility clothing, which is even more important during the darker nights of winter when it becomes easier to be caught out and about when daylight

ends and darkness rolls in. It is mandatory to wear high visibility clothing and at night and during poor visibility. At best, if you are not wearing high visibility clothing you are invisible to motorists until they are about 10 metres away. A vehicle travelling at 90 kilometres per hour covers 25 metres per second. In this instance, it would be impossible for a vehicle driver to respond safely and in time to avoid a collision. In Europe, each year, 800 children are knocked down resulting

in an average of 100,000 injuries. Many of these injuries, and deaths, can be avoided, which is the overall aim of the campaign. It is not only cyclists who have to wear high visibility clothing at night and during poor visibility, pedestrians must do too. In fact, when walking in groups, it is also mandatory to carry lights, white at the front of the group, and red at the back. We cover this in more detail on the n332.es website, but, irrespective of age or mode of transport, the one thing to always remember is quite simply #StayBright.
