AUAN wins key change CAMPAIGNERS HAVE won key changes in planning laws to give some 30,000 homes across Andalucia “greater legal certainty”. by Jack Troughton Nine years of work paid off by the AUAN when the Parliament of Andalucia approved a bill to modify three articles within the LOUA planning laws – ending a “legal limbo” and the “anguish” of thousands who bought in good faith. It permits the ‘regularisation’ of isolated residential properties located on illegal land divisions, or ‘parcelaciones urbanisticas’, and on non-urbanisable land or, ‘suelo no urbanizable’. It will mean nearly all the homes will be able to get supplies of basic utilities and paperwork for the properties. The bill was passed with votes from representatives from the socialist PSOE, the conservative PP, and centre party Ciudadanos – Podemos and the IU abstained. The new law comes into force in august, allowing homeowners to ask for the regularisation of their property by applying for an AFO certificate. Continued on page 8

The Adolfo Suarez Municipal Park in Huércal-Overa has been chosen as a setting to show off the “Spanish Dream” to British TV viewers. The production team of Channel 4 series´Sun, Sea and Selling Houses´ has been recording part of the program in the park, which follows two expatriate families engaged in the sale of houses in southern Spain. Huércal-Overa´s Councillor for Tourism, Monica Navarro, explained that the municipality of Huércal-Overa was “continually promoted” through new initiatives like this program set to be broadcast in autumn. She said: “We started to work together with the production team because it is a very good opportunity for the British public to learn more about our town and its people.”

Home improvements GOOD NEWS for property owners this week as campaign groups celebrate making real steps forward and in different ways improve the lot of their members. The AUAN in Almeria has won vital concessions that will allow some 30,000 homes in Andalucia to be ‘regularised’ in the eyes of the Junta – helping end the anguish of people who bought property in good faith. Politicians acted with common sense and while much is still to be done, residents can at least enjoy the Spanish sunshine knowing planners will officially recognise their homes. Further north on the Costa Blanca a residents’ group has found well-researched arguments, patience, and maintaining a dialogue with those in power pays off as they aim to get their urbanisation officially adopted and problems with infrastructure sorted out. The association is now forming alliances with likeminded people in different parts of the coast in a bid to build an even louder voice when it comes to shared problems. It is a work in progress but is successful will surely pay dividends. RTN Towers is heading for a little spot of downtime. The crew, excited at the prospect of a week off, have packed buckets and spades, sunhats and towels for a jaunt by the sea – just living the dream like everyone else. Moonlight miles WALKERS ENJOYED a “magical” moonlight stroll along one of the routes created by Mojacar Town Hall as an attraction to visitors. by Jack Troughton The 10km path, rated as ‘medium-low’ difficulty, went along the fascinating Mena-Macenas route, and was undertaken by locals and walkers from across Almeria.

Underage robbers caught FOUR MINORS have been arrested, suspected of burglary and causing criminal damage to property. The youths, aged between 14 and 16 are believed to have broken security glass in a video shop located in the town of Vera, having made a failed attempt they allegedly returned on a later date only to fail yet again. Police believe that in an act of frustration they then broke into a vehicle which was parked 200 metres away. Having broken a window of the car they stole an item of jewellery and caused damage to the vehicle.

The route takes visitors back to the area’s mining past – with tracks left by mule drivers and the transportation of local iron ore – along the spectacular Nazari rock formation, and passes towers built to defend the coast from invaders. With guides accompanying the party, there were explanations of history and natural resources – fauna and flora including the endangered ‘limoniumestevei’. Mojacar currently has three marked paths for walkers: the Gardens of Mojacar, along the margins of the River Aguas; a route from Marina de la Torre to Mojacar Village, and the Macenas mines walk. According to the council, all offer a unique opportunity to discover beautiful landscapes, pockets of ancient history, and the natural appeal of the Sierra Cabrera.

Language is key by Jack Troughton COSTA BLANCA businessman Graham Davis was snapped up to join the British Consulate’s ‘Our Local Ambassador’ programme after offering to share 16 years experience of living and working in Spain. As the scheme was being prepared, he had already coincidently written saying he lived permanently in the Benidorm area and was prepared to help out. As well as running the ‘t-shoppe’, a speciality delicatessen, tea and gift business in La Nucia and online, Graham also represents a number of large British food manufacturers in Spain and works closely with Department of Trade officers in Madrid. “I had met Ambassador Simon Manley at trade shows before and basically sent a letter saying I was here if anyone needed support in any of the programmes,” he said. “The Alicante Consulate rang up shortly afterwards saying they were doing the ‘OLA’ and was I interested, and we went from there.” After serving with the Royal Navy, he moved into the world of Human Resources and planned to continue the career choice in Spain. Ironically, his Spanish wife Amaia is now a HR manager for a hotel chain. “We have swapped roles.” However, he admitted when he first arrived in Spain, despite classes he could only speak ‘pidgin’ Spanish. “I couldn’t speak the language, although I can now – through total immersion and watching Spanish television.” Graham, Amaia and their two children live in Alfaz del Pi, but his Spanish was perfected on trips away from the English-speaking coast. “Integration is very important for your own well-being but also it gives lots of opportunities in terms of contacts,” he said. “If you are in business it opens new markets. My Spanish clients love the fact I sell British products but also that I speak Spanish; they like to talk in their own language. “Spain is changing a lot but business is still very much done over a coffee and a handshake – when you sell something in Spain people like to see you in person, they don’t want an email.” He added: “Integration also helps you know what’s going on to help you; you learn about local politics and local gossip.” And Graham is keen to take on more responsibility in helping the Consulate spread information to the British population – especially in the aftermath of the Brexit vote. “I hope we are given information as agreements and negotiations continue rather than in one huge lump…I very much believe it is an area I can help, helping the information exchange.”

HOUSEHOLDERS LIVING on a Costa Blanca urbanisation are “delighted” to have finally won a commitment that repairs to decaying infrastructure will go ahead. by Jack Troughton A determined residents association has carefully and patiently negotiated with local politicians over the problems blighting their homes – said to be both a safety and health hazard. Monte Pego has around 1,300 homes and there are between 1,800 and 2,000 people living on the development, largely in the municipality of Pego; although some areas are in Denia and Rafol. Residents group , the Association de Vecinos de La Montana de Pego (AVMP), has been meeting with Pego Town Hall for over five years over a number of issues that make the area “like a third world country”; such as problems with roads, water and sewage, and street lighting. There is an ongoing legal case between the town hall and the developer over responsibility for the work dating back to 2004. The residents have now been told a three phase programme of work will begin in August. “I truly feel the town hall is fully committed to getting something going,” said Dr Bernd Miller, President of AVMP. “In the meantime we are a force to be reckoned with. We as tax payers over the years have given between 6 million Euros and 8 million Euros and have not had any services in return. “We are talking safety issues, basic services they are obliged to come up with in response to our financial contribution. “We are very strong on that and are supported by legal experts as well. The town hall now realises we will not deviate from that position; I think at the bottom line, they probably realise we have a good point.” And following last year’s municipal elections, Vecinos – which has over 250 ‘paid up’ members and another 300 supporters - submitted a petition to Mayor Enrique Moll requesting action. TRUST The mayor repeatedly pledged the work would begin, but when nothing happened, Dr Miller said residents “had almost lost their trust in any sincere commitment.” However, he said following a series of meetings, the group was “delighted” Pego Town Hall had put forward a plan. New traffic signs and road markings will be installed during August and at the end of October and during November small road repairs would be undertaken, and weeds and shrubs removed. The final phase is more complex. It is aimed at completing the urbanisation’s infrastructure and includes street lighting, resurfacing roads, water supply, sewage treatment, and police patrols. Dr Miller said the mayor wanted to coordinate the project with the two neighbouring town halls and attract funding from the provincial government. He said residents were not happy they might have to contribute 20% of the cost – but the scheme would be carefully scrutinised and debated. And he believes the victory has been won through patience and a continued dialogue, making well-researched proposals. “There have been communication problems in the past, perhaps through a language problem, but now this is all cleared up,” said Dr Miller. “As an association, we are happy to continue a fruitful dialogue with the town hall – whatever they come up with we will monitor with caution.” The association has recently formed a loose alliance with Cumbre del Sol Residents Association – the large urbanisation at Benitachell has 3,000 properties – to present a united front on certain issues. Dr Miller said he hoped to extend this to other developments to be able to present a united voice in key areas. “No one can ignore a group of 30,000, 40,000 or even 50,000 people.”

Marijuana grower arrested A MAN has been arrested by Guardia Civil for allegedly growing 46 marijuana plants in his home. by Angela Baker The 32 year old Vicar resident known only as SPN, was detained by the police following a complaint made by his partner at their Roquetas de Mar office, alleging that she had been abused by SPN. Officers arrested the man because of the abuse allegation but they were already investigating him for the possibility that he was growing marijuana plants on a large scale at his home, however they had no evidence. Once the Guardia gained access to the property they found in one of the rooms the plantation of illegal drugs being cared for by high lighting, a carbon filter and an exhaust fan. The plants were well established and estimated to each be a metre and a half tall.

WITH A budget of more than 3 million euros the expansion plans for the promenade of Mojácar have been approved. The ongoing work has been given the go ahead by Magrama (Department of Sustainability of the Coast and Sea Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment) and will take an estimated fourteen months to complete. Andrés García Lorca, from the Almeria government, said “the new project includes the adaptation of 740 metres of the promenade where it meets with the edge of the coastline.” The plans include 145 new parking space, new green areas, street

lighting and bins as well as a bike lane. There will also be a new playground for the Cantal beach.

GUARDIA CIVIL officers arrested a man acting suspiciously whilst waiting for a flight to Ibiza and discovered he had swallowed hundreds of small wraps of hashish. by Caroline Tyszka The 49-year-old Moroccan man was detained at Málaga airport in the security zone of terminal three. Officers decided to question him and give him a body scan. The man confessed that he had swallowed a large amount of wraps - with officers amazed to see the quantity of drugs contained in his abdominal cavity on the scanner. He was held for almost 70 hours whilst he passed all the drugs; 385 small bundles, amounting to over two kilos in weight.

Apple pie Britain’s favourite A PIE survey carried out by One Poll has revealed that apple pie is the nation’s favourite. An average adult eats 2.2 pies a month, equating to 26.4 pies a year, or 1663.2 pies in an adult’s lifetime. Traditional recipes such as shepherd’s pie, steak and ale, and pork fared well but fish pie only came in at number 23. One Poll’s Kevin Smith said: “Whether sweet or savoury, pie passion is clearly high and a hardfought contest sees apple pie narrowly take the top spot.” The survey revealed that most people remember apple pie from when they were younger; with 57 percent saying that they could remember their mothers baking them.

Members of AUAN, other property rights groups, British Vice Consul Rosslyn Crotty, and Almeria’s PSOE leader Jose Luis Sanchez Teruel and local politicians past and present are pictured giving their approval to the change. Maura Hillen, President of the property rights association Abusos Urbanisticos Almanzora NO, said she was totally satisfied with the move. “This change is the result of nine years of work by our association and it will deliver real and immediate benefits to our members. Nearly all of them will eventually be able to obtain electricity, water, and paperwork for their homes. COMMON SENSE “We are grateful for the spirit of common sense and consensus shown by our politicians, and without wishing to undermine our gratitude to all political parties; I believe it is fair to mention the important role played in all of this by the provincial executive of the PSOE in Almeria under the leadership of Jose Luis Sanchez Tereul.” And she felt “heartened” by the words of Rafael Marquez, General Secretary of Territorial Planning and Town Planning of the Junta de Andalucia, who hoped the reform was sufficient but if necessary further changes would be made. Maura believes the AUAN has helped the government take a big step forward but it was not the end of the battle; home owners were still waiting for properties to be made legal via a town plan, a PGOU. “We need more measures to speed up the legalisation of these houses and for this reason I am heartened to hear the commitment of Mr Marquez,” she said. “This latest change demonstrates what can be achieved through cooperation at a regional and national level by well organised associations using the advice of experts to make reasonable and achievable proposals to our regulators.” And she paid tribute to the contribution of the AUAN’s legal advisor Gerardo Vazquez. “We owe him a great debt of gratitude.” On a practical level, Maura explained the change meant every property across Andalucia built after 1975 would need the AFO paperwork or a licence of occupation to guarantee compliance with planning regulations – bringing “obvious” advantages in terms of legal certainty for prospective buyers. “This is not an amnesty. The house needs to comply with various administrative and physical requirements – all at the cost of the owner,” said Maura. “But it allows thousands of houses to exit a legal limbo and puts and end to the anguish of thousands of purchasers in good faith who bought these houses in the past. Wounded man airlifted to safety

A man aged 64 was evacuated by helicopter after being stabbed during an argument in the cove of San Pedro de Nijar. Because of the difficult terrain, the victim was airlifted out by the sea rescue helicopter which took him to Almeria airport to receive initial treatment before being transferred to Torrecárdenas Hospital. The investigation by the Guardia Civil, has resulted in the arrest of DBM, 33, a resident of Vera, for attempted murder after a long search involving officers combing dangerous for the suspect.

The adventure begins by Jack Troughton VICTOR PEMBERTON waved goodbye to his friends yesterday (Thursday) morning and set off on his Arctic Adventure – an 11,500km round trip to Norway – in aid of charity Help for Heroes. The Doctor Who writer is driving “solo” to Bodo in Norway, about 100 miles into the Arctic Circle from his home in Murla – broadcasting tales of life on the road twice a day over You Tube. British and Spanish flags proudly fluttered in the morning sun as Victor said goodbye to his pet dogs Bubble and Squeak and was wished good luck by his friends, neighbours, and the Mayor of Murla. Victor expects he will be back home at the end of August and described his epic drive as “the journey of a lifetime”. He said in his first broadcast to the world: “In a moment, I am getting into my cart and driving solo to Bodo in the Arctic circle, a round trip of

11,500km. Why? Because I want to raise funds for the wonderful organisation, Help for Heroes. “The funds are very much needed for the care and rehabilitation of service men and women who have suffered life-changing injuries serving their country in conflicts such as Afghanistan, Iraq and the Falklands.” Victor, who created two complete Doctor Who series – one for Patrick Troughton and the second for Tom Baker playing the Time Lord – said Help for Heroes was a cause close to his heart; his father was wounded during the Battle of the Somme in 1916. “There was no Help for Heroes in those days and he got nothing. In a way, I am doing this trip as a tribute to him. Boat explosion injures family A FAMILY HOLIDAYING in the Balearics were injured when their yacht was engulfed in flames following an explosion in the Ibiza Marina on Sunday. by caroline tySZKA The accident is said to have occurred minutes after the boat refuelled. Three of four people injured were reported to be from a Spanish family on holiday at the time. On board were a couple aged 36 and 37. Both sustained severe burns with the woman having 90% and the man 50% of their bodies effected. They were described as being in a critical condition and were airlifted to the intensive care unit at the Can Misses Hospital on the island. The third family member, reported to be the woman’s 64-year-old father, suffered burns to his arm and smoke inhalation. He was taken to hospital with the fourth victim - who was on a speedboat moored next to the yacht at the time of the explosion. Holidaymakers wanting to help were told by the rescue services to remain at a safe distance whilst the fire was extinguished.

New promenade opens

THE TOWN of Altea has completed an extension of its promenade which now reaches to the Algar River. Costing 350,000€, the 291m extension to the existing walkway welcomed by government delegates and local dignitaries as well as the Coastal Authority of Alicante. Attending the official opening Juan Carlos Moragues, of the Valencia government, said it was first step in the renovation of the Altea seafront which has a budget of 4.6 million Euros. Other improvements will include building a new artificial beach, aimed at protecting the environment and increasing recreational space for the town. Moragues said: “This is a clear example of the government’s commitment to protect our coastline and boost tourism, a source of wealth and employment in the Region. “This year, the government has invested about 13 million euros in the Valencia coast, twice as much in 2015.”

Beaches are all heart Pilots call

THE BEACHES of a popular Costa Blanca resort are all ‘cardio-protected’ this summer with Red Cross stations all having a heart defibrillator for emergencies. by Rhiannan Bell In a pioneering move, Javea Town Hall has unveiled the pioneering move and the equipment has been supplied to all beaches where the charity runs a lifeguard service. It means the beaches of La Grava, Benissero, El Arenal, La Barraca and Granadella have the equipment in “a major health breakthrough”. And the defibrillators can be the difference between life and death in cases of cardiac arrest and can also help resuscitate people involved in possible drowning cases. Lifeguards have attended a special course in using the equipment and all first aid stations have the medication needed. Two years ago at Granadella, a defibrillator helped save the life of a man pulled from the water, underlining the importance of having them at all beaches. Visiting the station at La Grava, Mayor Jose Chulvi - pictured inspecting a new defibrillator – said: “Such details are what make our beaches a leader in safety and quality of care.” And he congratulated the Red Cross for its constant desire to improve and the professionalism shown during another busy summer.

THE SPANISH UNION of Airline Pilots (SEPLA) has called off Air Europa’s scheduled strike for July 30th until August 2nd. The good news for travellers comes following the airline cancelling 114 flights to enable them to provide a basic service during the planned four day dispute.

Donors give generously A BLOOD donation session in La Nucia last week was attended by 25 donors as Councillor for Health Manuel Alcala said it was important to participate in the “Donate Blood, Save Lives” campaign. “When summer time comes donations decrease,” he said. “And although this was the first session to be held at the Nou Espai Social Centre, normally La Nucia has around 30 donations at each session.” For anyone wishing to donate, there is another opportunity on 11th August at the Centre de Salut in the town from 5.30 pm until 8.30 pm.

Gang arrested for burglaries

THE NATIONAL Police have arrested eight people and raided four houses, breaking up a criminal gang responsible for burglaries up and down the coast. by Caroline Tyszka

Officers believe that the gang was responsible for robbing empty properties in Alicante, Elche, Denia, Javea and Almería over several months.

Nuclear Submarina HMS Ambush collided with a merchant ship during training exercises last week - the Royal Navy vessel needing a tow into Gibralter.

Initial investigations found the bandits, who used false documents to impersonate Belgian or French citizens, targeted properties unoccupied for a period of time. Officers recovered over fifty items of jewellery which were directly linked to the robberies along with large amounts of cash and mobile phones. The eight arrested were all men of Algerian nationality aged between 23 and 56. They have been charged with seven counts of burglary as well as possessing fake documents.

The ship, an Astute-class submarine, was “submerged and conducting a training exercise” when it was involved in what the Ministry of Defence described as a “glancing collision” off the coast. She suffered external damage but the nuclear plant and crew were unharmed. The Astute class subs cost more than £1bn each and weigh in at 7,400 tonnes. They carry torpedoes, cruise missiles and are equipped with “world leading sensors.”

by Jack Troughton THE NEW Leroy Merlin store set to open in Finestrat this December will generate 80 direct jobs - with priority being given to locals. Mayor of Finestrat Juan Francisco Perez met with Felix Garcia, the chain’s regional director, to sign an agreement where unemployed people in the area would be considered first for vacant positions. The mayor said: “We are very happy that the store chose Finestrat and that we have been able to sign this agreement, helping to promote employment where residents are unemployed or want to work and will now have the opportunity to be part of the Leroy Merlin team.”

Classic rocks MUSIC STUDENTS from across Europe and as far away as Mexico, China, and Japan, have enjoyed being part of an international course staged at the Javea Institute of Music. In total, 71 students of all ages have enjoyed taking part and getting note perfect helped by experienced teachers before performing live recitals to appreciative audiences in the Marina Alta town. They have played a variety of pieces from classical composers and tonight (Friday) take a bow after tackling a selection of pieces from Bach to contemporary classical composers. The intensive course specialised in wind instruments and flute players are pictured getting all rock ‘n’ roll.

Craft and fireworks in Hondon VISITORS TO Hondon de las Nieves over the weekend 6th and 7th August can enjoy some traditional Spanish culture – skills on display at a craft fair...and the excitement of ‘Correfocs’, literally running with fire. by Jack Troughton There will be between 20 and 30 craftsmen and women setting up their stalls demonstrating their skills and selling their wares; working with leather, wood, papers, paintings and jewellery. In short, a group of people hare around the village setting off fireworks around a crowd attracted to the event. However, the craft fair is staged in quieter moments. Aid for Alzheimer’s by Rhiannan Bell A Murcia student, has designed a computer system aimed at helping people with Alzheimer’s disease. Javier Armiñana, 29, from Valencia, received a scholarship to study Computer Engineering at the Catholic University of Murcia (UCAM), and after experiencing difficulties faced by family members of those who suffer with Alzheimer’s first hand, started work on his programme. The prototype, explained Javier, is based on a carpet that has inbuilt sensors which detect when the person is on the move. For example, when the person gets up out of bed in the middle of the night, it sends an automatic signal to a receiver using “blue-tooth” technology. This turns on lighting to reduce falls and disorientation. The system also incorporates an alarm and calendar which alerts patients when it is time to take medication; it can even remind users to carry a cane when taking a stroll. The system is mainly oriented toward care homes and residential centres said the student. He added: “I felt I wanted to improve the lives of people with this disease and this system optimises the relationship between patients, families and caregivers.” The young engineer is now immersed in another related computer project but meanwhile, continues to seek economic investments to boost implementation of his automated system.

Politicians in Orihuela have requested clarification on the current status of the multiservice wireless “Uryulanet” which was installed in 2012 at a cost of 1.8 million Euros. Spokesman for Ciudadanos, Juan Ignacio López-Bas, Said: “The only real fact is, that to date, a large investment of over a million and a half euros has been made, but still the project has not been launched.” He said the last reference to the system came from Martina Scheurer of Los Verdes, who claimed problems arose because of a lack of electricity supply from Radio TelevisionValenciana. Mr López-Bas has described this as “curious” because a power supply could be accessed through solar energy for which an investment of 76,000€ was made. In any case, he said RTV was “not engaged in supplying electrical energy, so that the reasons given seem like excuses.” Lopez-Bas went on to say that regardless, this situation “should be clarified as to why we have had a multiservice wireless network for over four years but it has never been functional and, above all, what is to be done with it, how will you correct the problems that have occurred.”

Arrested for TraffickingAnabolic Steroids Six people have been arrested for trafficking anabolic steroids in Murcia and other Spanish provinces. National Police mounted an operation named ‘Muscle’, set up after the death of a bodybuilder and a second person found to be suffering injuries after taking the illegally sold substances. One of those arrested, the owner of a gym in Albacete, is allegedly considered responsible for the bodybuilder’s death. The investigation began last November and uncovered a group of people selling the drugs, mainly to gyms, who then passed them on to their customers wanting to increase muscle mass. ,

Councillor for sports Ana Garcia presented trophies at the end of the day – all juniors received a medal as a reward for their efforts and to encourage sport “as a healthy pastime”. The politician thanked everyone for taking part and encouraged them to keep playing sport – she said she hoped all would take part in 12 months time. And the popular summer competition continues with rounds in Garrucha and Cuevas de Almanzora.

Dangerous Robber Arrested

National Police officers have arrested a man who took part in a jewellery shop raid in Almería where valuables worth 47,000€ were stolen at gunpoint. The robbery took place in December 2015 when three men entered the store, hoping more loot would be available in the Christmas season.

A firearm was used to threaten four family members who ran the business and a customer who was there at the time. After collecting their haul, the assailants left the scene followed closely by the brave victims. The arrested gang member turned to face one of the victims and fired a shot, which luckily missed its target. The gang then headed off in a getaway car.

The detained perpetrator is no stranger to violence and had already served a prison sentence in Bolivia for the murder of his partner, a US citizen, in 1991, believing that she had betrayed him to American anti-drug law enforcement. During his incarceration for that crime, he was also convicted of killing his cellmate, reportedly the head of a notorious gang, by crushing his head with a concrete dumbbell. For that murder, he was sentenced to another 15 years in prison, although under a bilateral treaty signed by Bolivia and Spain part of his sentence was fulfilled within the Spanish prison facilities.

Garrucha Invaded by Pokémon Go by Rhiannan Bell It seems the hunt for Pokémon has reached new heights in the small town of Garrucha, Almería, boosting the local population. The addictive application, Pokémon Go, available to download and play on mobile devices, engages the user by ‘hiding’ the Pokémon character in real locations which the player visits in real time to locate it and win points. Various sites around the town have seen a small boom in locals and visitors and the town hall has decided to turn the invasion into a positive thing for the area.

It hopes the game will generate new interest in the town’s monuments and will also increase revenue for local businesses. Garrucha appears as a control centre in the Pokemon game, and features the chiminea de Calvario, the Ancla de Puerto Marina, la figura de la Virgen del Carmen y Virgen del Rocío. Hunters have even invaded the chapel, Cristo de la Misericordia, Using the application, however, is causing some concern as players become so involved in the search for the huge number of virtual figures scattered around the town that often they are less aware of their surroundings and so the Garrucha authorities are making an extra effort to promote road safety.

The Ministry of Economic Development in Murcia is working on plans to boost the mining sector and has identified more than four potential sites. In the bowels of the regional territory there is a treasure in the form of ornamental rock and minerals with economic potential that has not yet been utilised, according to the regional government. It wants to push through a strategy to develop the mining sector and claims it will multiply almost tenfold the area dedicated to this industrial activity. The ministry has two main objectives: to improve legal certainty in the sector and establish environmental guarantees for an industry that carries the stigma of being aggressive with the landscape and natural values. “The regional government has put forward a safe and respectful plan to ensure that the region has responsible

mining, offers key sustainability, economic and social development factors,” says Counsillor, Juan Hernandez. He expects the new plans to be effective “in two or three years, depending on the state and regional regulations.” Repair to damage caused by excavation is possible according to the pro-mining campaigners. This has been demonstrated with a quarry in Abanilla where 2,200 olive trees and 800 Aleppo pines and bushes like black hawthorn, rosemary and esparto, a tough course grass, have been planted.

Kings of the road A campaign run by Tráfico in Murcia has found the condition of the region´s cars are in better condition than in previous years. by Rhiannan Bell Guadia Civil was deployed between 11th to 17th July on the look-out for technical defects on vehicles, as well as checking that drivers´ documentation was up to scratch. Of the7,638 vehicles that were stopped, only 385 drivers ( 4.83%) received fines; a 5% decrease from last year. And of these, almost half were imposed for driving without an ITV certificate. Poor tyre condition, lack of documentation, missing registration plates and non-functioning lights also featured on the list. Cars received the most fines, a total of 218, while trucks and vans received 43 and 75, respectively. Tráfico Captain, Agapito Cánovas, noted that the results all pointed to objectives being met in this campaign. “We have detected increased compliance this year; vehicles are in better condition and the occurrence of technical problems is minor.”

Botéllon Returns The ‘botellón’ returned for the Moors & Christians celebrations in Orihuela and mounds of waste were left scattered by the youngsters who took part in the festivities. The site located in the Ocarasa neighborhood next to the Lidl supermarket was once again the place for the hundreds of young people who met to take part in the party; arriving laden with bags filled with alcohol. Bottles and cans of lager were left lying around in heaps until the brigade of workers from the Department of Urban Cleaning come to blitz the area the following morning. It seems extensive surveillance and control of the area by both National and Local Police has not improved the behaviour of the party goers and despite many complaints nothing has been done to end the nuisance.

Life seems to be moving very fast in the UK and every day something new is happening. It looks as if Brexit is going to start happening in the New Year. Whether you voted or, like me, were unable to vote, our destiny is now in the hands of many politicians.

Having watched the Pound drop drastically, I am sure there are many Ex Pats who are extremely worried about the exchange rate effecting their pensions and savings. I understand there are some that feel their future would no longer be in Spain and they are considering returning to the UK. I seriously think that this will be a mistake as I am convinced that energy, food, petrol etc will all increase over the next few months, making the cost of living higher than it is already. Whilst in Spain the Brexit effects will be minimal. Life in the UK seems to be very grey at the moment and instead of rain we wake up to beautiful blue skies, go and sit by the sea, or have a glass of wine and a good meal that does not cost a fortune. These are just are some of the reasons we came to Spain and that will never change. The Spanish Prime Minister, Rajoy, has issued a statement confirming that the British are all welcome to visit and live in Spain and he expects the same consideration for the Spanish nationals in the UK. Our presence in Spain boosts the local economy, both as tourists and residents, and there would be a tremendous hole if we were all to leave, which would be impossible. The Regional President of the

Valencian Community, Ximo Puig has said – rest easy. He went on to say that the healthcare of any British citizen is assured, and again would expect this to continue as a reciprocal agreement. He also sent a message of fondness and warmth and he did not anticipate any spectacular fall-off of British visitors. This all sounds rather encouraging and, as we are well aware, the negotiations for Brexit are going to take at least two years to be completed.

Beware, these sites are a scam. You must apply for a new card through the official EHIC website only, at no cost. With the uncertainty surrounding the EHIC it is now more important than ever to ensure that you have travel insurance. Idris not in the Q ACTOR IDRIS Elba appears to have ruled himself out of becoming the next 007 when current James Bond Daniel Craig retires from the role – he thinks he is too old.

The 43-year-old has been widely tipped by bookmakers to pick up a licence to thrill and join Her Majesty’s secret service. It is not known when the next James Bond film – it will be the 25th in the hit franchise – will go into production. However, Idris, famous for roles in ‘Luther’ and ‘The Wire’, is one of the favourites to step into Daniel Craig’s shoes; along with Tom Hiddleston, Aidan Turner and James Norton. Currently on the big screen in Star Trek Beyond, Idris told ABC’s Good Morning America: “I think I’m too old for that...running around in cars and ladies and martinis; who wants to do that? Sounds terrible. “I keep saying if it were to happen it would be the will of the nation because there haven’t been any talks between me and the studio about any of that.” He added: “But everywhere I go people want that to happen.” The oldest actor to become 007 in the history of Bond was Roger Moore. Mortgages in Spain: The correct amount to claim for on floor mortgage clauses We have helped many people who have suffered financial loss through floor rate mortgage clauses. These clauses limit the variability of the mortgage loan interest, and with our help these clients have been compensated and recovered the interests overpaid. However, we have noticed that offers made by the banks, as well as the claims presented on behalf of the consumers, do not always include all the damages which we understand could be claimed for. We understand that the consequence of declaring a mortgage floor clause null should be as if it had never existed, the whole mortgage must be recalculated. The replacing of the floor clause with a lower interest rate will not only mean that an interest has been overpaid, but also that there should be a possibility of claiming for the interest lost on these over payments, plus, a lower interest rate influences the % of each monthly payment that is allocated to paying off the pending capital amount. To consider an example: A loan of € 250,000, for 20 years (240 months), with an interest rate of 1% and 3% floor clause. .- With the 3% floor rate clause, if we claim in year 15 (the monthly payment number 180), up to that date the interest paid would be 76.730,58 €, and the outstanding capital - principal to be paid off still, would be 77,161 , 66 €. .-Without the clause floor, we would have been paid an interest of 1%. Some banks and claims would say, as we have paid 3% and we should have paid 1%, we are entitled to get 2/3 of the interest paid back, so we could claim for = 51.153,66 € But in reality, we are entitled to the entire loan, interest, etc. to be recalculated as per the correct interest, ie 1%, without the mortgage floor rate clause, meaning the interest up to that date, using the example shown above, should have been only 24,213.08€, and the outstanding capital to be paid off would have been reduced to 66.166,92€. So we understand that in this claim we have the right to:

.-Get back the overpaid interest = 52.517,50 €. .-Get paid legal interest on the overpaid interest amount. .-Get a reduction on the outstanding capital of the mortgage to be paid, of 10.994,74 €. Therefore, the benefit of the claim would not be 51.153,66 €, as per the first calculation, but in fact should be 63.512,24 € plus legal interest, as per the second calculation.

Do you remember when Mirror Group pensioners lost their retirement benefits after giving years of loyal service when a certain Mr Maxwell was allowed to use the funds in the pension scheme towards helping him fund business activities outside of the Pension Scheme? Well the government of the day acted swiftly to make radical changes to Company Pension schemes to make sure this tragedy could never happen again. Fantastic news. It is quite astonishing that George Osborne (before his hasty and convenient back door departure) announced that to help companies with balance sheet problems that they once again may have restrictions lifted to give them access to the pension funds, thus giving the possibility of another Robert Maxwell debacle happening. This has been instigated by the falling of the BHS and the fact that this scheme has now gone into the Pension Protection Fund. I find this quite incredulous as had access to the BHS pension funds been available then the benefits of the future pensioners would be even more severely affected and even lost altogether. As the years have gone by more and more pension schemes have found it difficult to fund the promised benefits and found themselves going into the Pension Protection Scheme (effectively freezing benefits and flexibilities) The pension protection fund has now admitted that there is not enough money to help put the safeguards in place as people continue to live longer and pension schemes are hit by poor long term returns. SPAIN’S POPULATION is shrinking as increasing numbers of Spaniards move abroad and foreigners leave the country, new figures reveal. by Jack Troughton A four-year trend continues and on 1st January this year, there were 99,439 fewer residents living in Spain compared to 12 months earlier, according to statistics from the Institute of National Statistics. And the registered population is said to be 46.5 million, down 0.2%. Figures are based on the ´padron´, the official register of local residents, compiled at town halls across the country and regularly submitted to the institute. The latest statistics confirm the downward trend first identified in 2012 and in the midst of the economic gloom of the recession. Foreign residents represent 9.9% of the population and fell by 128,372 people – of these the main nationalities were from Ecuador, Britain and Germany. INTERNATIONALLY RENOWNED dancer Anabel Veloso and her dance company performed her show ‘Flamencoland’ in Mojacar on Saturday – one of the highlights of the town’s summer activities. Anabel took her first steps in her career in her native Almeria and went on to dance at the Centro de Danza Espanola y Flamenca de Rafael de Cordoba in Madrid and the Centro Homologado de Danza de la Maestra Matilde Coral in Seville. And as a soloist she has performed at the famous ‘tablaos’ – flamenco venues – in Spain and internationally. She believes the dance forges links across continents and cultures. Mojacar Town Hall has arranged a full programme of summer events – activities packed with music and culture – for all the family. Windows update

Dear Aunty, I have attempted to download Windows 10 as I got a message which I could not quit from asking which day and time I wanted the download to happen. I had problems yesterday as the computer kept powering off and when I brought it up again it said that the download was starting, implying it was starting again. I changed the sleep time to 5 hours to give it time to download. This completed and I then started to update the machine. It powered down and restarted but when it came up it was still Windows 7. I have twice gone into Windows update this morning and it said that Windows 10 was ready to be installed. I selected to install now and the machine powered off and restarted but nothing else happened. When I logged in it was still Windows 7. Do you have any suggestions ? Regards, Fisher Reply: Most W10 upgrades will not work if there are any outstanding W7 updates not installed. If you want to install W10 without any problems, the use the w10 media creation tool. This will download W10 where you can load it onto a USB stick, and install w10 from that USB stick rather than doing an “all in the PC” upgrade. Where as in the past I have had issues doing w10 upgrades “in the PC”, all W10 upgrades using the w10 media creation tool have gone perfectly fine. W10 Media Creation tool can be found at : https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10ISO You need a USB stick with nothing on, and it will download to the stick. And then you can upgrade from the stick, rather than via the “online” version. Obviously, BACK UP anything and everything onto a separate drive – usb stick before the upgrade, just in case

Facebook account Hi Aunty, My wife and I have 3 three laptops between us. Two are Windows 10 and one a reliable Windows 7. We both have facebook accounts and on my laptop I and my wife can attach a photo to a message in either of our accounts with facebook. It takes no time at all and is sent immediately. On the other two laptops (Win 7 and Win 10) neither in my account or my wife’s account does the image get attached. The green bar shows that the image has been obtained but then the sequence of comfort dots, or whatever they are, go on for hours until my patience is not rewarded with a nice cold lager but a much confused and steaming head. I used to be a top computer software engineer but this one beats me. Any suggestions before I go and make a noose. Cheers, Rick Reply: I too had the same issue on W7 using Internet Explorer. The issue did NOT happen when using Chrome or Firefox. But when it did happen on Internet Explorer, I simply refreshed the page, and the attachment was showing, and so I could post normally. A reset or cache clearance of Internet Explorer (from the options) may correct this, if the issue is with an add on or the cache.

Builders buckets can be very productive In theory a few vegetables as well as herbs can be grown in flower pots but what we normally regards as pots are not very successful especially in the summer in Spanish gardens once temperatures rise above twenty degrees. Today and for the past few days our temperature in the shade hovers around 35 degrees but vegetables, if watered every other day, are growing well in black builders buckets of 55 centimetres diameter as shown in the photograph above and of 65 centimetres elsewhere in semi-shaded corners of the garden. They include red and crinkly green lettuces, rocket, Swiss chard, purslane, carrots, cabbages, cauliflowers, stevia, cumin, horse radish, climbing yard long and butter beans, dwarf beans, tomatoes, nasturtiums for edible leaves flowers and seed pods, several types of peppers and aubergines, courgettes, onions plus leeks producing seed for autumn sowing. A ‘Ten-tub vegetable garden’ as launched in our book ‘Growing Healthy Vegetables in Spain’ some ten years ago is very viable and productive. There are many benefits as described below. Twenty one proven benefits 1. Small space required - You can build up a circle, square, oblong or row in one bucket units of just a quarter of a square metre. 2. High yield per square metre – Close planting works well and you have no unplanted areas and paths to worry about. 3. Speedy harvesting – If you chose vegetables regularly used and co-locate the salad and ones for steaming for instance daily or twice daily harvesting takes just minutes. 4. Relatively inexpensive – If you hunt around builders buckets are not expensive and second hand ones can be used if located. 5. Little waste as number of plants controlled by your space. 6. Co-located salads – all the year round. 7. Accommodate small and expansive plants 8. No space for weeds – if one plants close to give shade to roots.

9. Easy to use mutual mulching- for instance lettuces around aubergine plants. 10. Easy soil enrichment – just make good initial soil/ compost/manure mixes and top up between crops. 11.Low water wastage – no sideways losses to dry earth. 12.Circular support frames for tomatoes, peppers and beans etc for strength 13.Rare insect and fungi attacks – no major area of vulnerable crops. 14. Companion plant – using mutually beneficial herbs and vegetables. 15.Instant filling of gaps to replace cleared cropsjust pop in a few new plantlets from local market or garden centre. 16.Of interest – to owners and visitors. 17. Easy to move or reorganise – Nothing too heavy to pull around. 18.Feature or hidden away – Part of mine is an island on the drive while other parts are in otherwise under used corners of the garden. 19.Just grow what you need - Easy for children and the infirm as well as the totally strong and able. 20. Crop rotation possible by rotating between buckets. 21.Can have a floral centre – Mine has a tall geranium. Yes this expanded small scale vegetable growing really does work and not only in gardens but also in small patios and on apartment terraces. My retreat from an 800 square metre allotment to raised beds and at present …builders buckets was driven by the increasing advent of thieving, increased cost of irrigation water, pollution of water by millions weed seeds as the surrounding agricultural land was progressively abandoned, wind-blown chemical pollution from non-organic orchards, the moving of a Michelin starred restaurant away from the area – the prices they had paid for mini organic vegetables met our production costs several times ,and to reduce my physical work as now nearing 80 years of age. So give it a go by starting with just two or three

buckets of closely planted salad plantlets even now in full summer grown in a mainly shaded position and then expand to produce the vegetables for the Christmas table, including new potatoes.

Taylor Alison Swift, who was born on December 13 ´89 in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, moved to Nashville Tennessee aged 14 to pursue a career in country music. I am 52, and have started the menopause. Worryingly, I think about death all the time, like there is a ticking clock over my head. I find I am very dissatisfied with the way things have turned out in my life, and what I haven‘t done. You are suffering a mid-life crisis, and it can be quite normal. Men can also suffer from this. Some goals in your life may no longer be achievable, and you will need to come to terms with those and put them behind you. If any of your goals are still open to you, then try and accomplish them - it‘s never too late. See your Doctor if your feelings are manifesting in to panic attacks, or anxiety. Otherwise, try and embrace this turning point in your life. For women, The Change can be very upsetting and daunting. There’s no turning back, and mourning over lost youth and the road not taken, is pointless. Decide this is going to be the first day of the rest of your life, get things in order, sort out any problems, and make some changes.

He wants a child I’ve been seeing a younger lad, 24. He says he wants me to have a child with him. I already have three teenage children, and thought my childbearing days were over at 43. My Doctor says I am peri-menopausal. My boyfriend says he can’t go through life without having a child of his own. He is not much older than my eldest boy. I didn’t consider our relationship was anything but a bit of fun, until this revelation. I don’t really want another child, but I told him I would consider it. When a woman is older, the chances of becoming pregnant grow less, and you are approaching menopause. If you did not consider this relationship serious, then it’s time to have a good think. Do you really want another child at your age? Teenagers are hard enough to deal with at your time of life, and you will be doing it again at nearly 60. I think the question you need to ask yourself is, ‘should I continue with this relationship?, more than, ‘do I want another child?’.

Translating “was” One of the hardest things for any of us to learn is that we cannot translate word for word from one language to another. This is basic cornerstone of language learning but it can still catch us out. In some instances we can get away with it, for example “chair” really is “silla” and “bailar” really is “to dance” even if styles of chairs and forms of dance vary from one country to another. However, the more we learn about a language the more differences we find. Sometimes they can be very subtle, sometimes they can create bizarre misunderstandings, and sometimes they are just plain complicated and grammatical. So, before we get onto the “complicated and grammatical”, here are examples of “subtle” and “bizarre”. There are many subtle differences in the ways we describe people and their personalities. Let’s take the word “nervioso” as an example. If we translate this into English as “nervous”, we assume it means “shy” or “retiring”. However, in Spanish “nervioso” means active, that is someone who can’t keep still. Really it is the opposite of “tranquilo”. I think “bizarre” might describe the translation mistake I read about the other day whilst doing some research. Apparently Alfonso XIII of Spain was the special guest of Edward VII in London in 1905 at a dinner in which he met his future wife. During the course of the evening he was reported to have said “I am sorry I am very constipated”. It would seem that poor old Alfonso had a cold which he mistranslated into English. And you thought your mistakes were embarrassing! The good news is that apparently his humorous behaviour at the dinner endeared him to his future bride Victoria Eugenia – so you just never can tell. So, that’s your amusement for this week – now to the boring grammatical bit. We’re going to have a go at the word “was”. It would be so nice if we could just look up “was” in the dictionary and come up with a single word replacement to suit all circumstances. If only it were that simple! However, “was” is not like “chair” and there are several different things we need to realize before we even approach the word “was”. I’m now going to summarize them and hope you’ll have the will left to continue reading next week.

Firstly, in English “was” can refer to “I”, “he”, “she”, or “it”. As I’m sure you know, we cannot assume in Spanish that a verb following “I” will be the same as a verb following “he or she”, although sometimes they are the same. Secondly, the word “was” comes from the verb “to be”, and as you also know, there are two verbs that translate “to be” in Spanish, namely “ser” and “estar”. Thirdly, (and I won’t assume you know this although I have gone into it on an earlier occasion), there are more past tenses in Spanish than there are in English and fourthly, there are expressions in English which use “was” which in Spanish use “tener” – for example “I was hungry” is “tenía hambre”. Now that I’ve got this far I might as well finish the job of frightening you by listing the words that most directly translate “was” – here they are: “estaba, estuve, estuvo, era, fui, fue”. I’m not sure how long it will take, but I am going to try and explain the difference over the next week or two – wish me luck.

WHEN we first arrived in Spain some 12 years ago – we had to go shopping in that well known French retail hades – yep! that’s the one. We needed a simple door bell – something that rings or dings. What we got was a music centre. It plays 26 different tunes – in alphabetical order. From A to Z, Annie’s Song to Zing Went The Strings Of My Heart. However it does frighten the starch out of Jehovah’s Witnesses when it plays Iron Maiden’s ‘Bring Your Daughter To The Slaughter.’ The bell had to go – so off we sallied to our local Far Eastern Temple Of Tat, but let me toddle off on a tangent for a tick. Take a look at the photo in the top left hand corner. Do I look shifty? Yes! I’ll give you, daft – but a no-goodnik – surely not? The reason I ask is whenever I saunter around a Mercado Chino I’m shadowed by a family member. Usually he looks like Hop Sing from Bonanza – not the other day - he had more than a passing resemblance to Goldfinger’s Odd Job - & he wore a bowler. Better buy a bell pronto or it might just toll for me. This surveillance malarkey – they probably had every right as I do have previous. When I was just entering the hell of Teenhood – please don’t judge me too harshly kindly reader – I went shoplifting in Woebegone Worthing’s Woolworths. It was for the first love of my pimply life. Her name was Valerie Salter and as we found out dramatically later, she loved the Bad Boys. So to prove my criminal credentials- just for my Gal Val – I stole a.....cricket ball. Strangely she was not best impressed so I pilfered for my love (& got nabbed)......a Davy Crockett hat. Val the Gal flounced off and became Val the Moll to one Victor Terry. Val & Vic with cohorts robbed a Sussex bank shooting dead an employee in the process. They were captured quickly & on May 26th 1961, Victor Terry was one of the last men to be executed in the UK. For her part Valerie got, bafflingly, a years probation – the same as I got for the cricket ball & hairy hat heist. I know justice is blind – but – come on, logic like that makes me the Godfather of West Side Worthing. Now what did I do with that horse’s head? Beef skewers with chimichurri rice salad

Bring some Latin sunshine to your barbecue this August with chimichurri rice and cumin spiced sirloin

Ingredients 2 tsp cumin seeds juice and zest 2 limes, plus wedges to serve 3 sirloin steak or rump steak, fat trimmed, cut into long strips 200g long grain rice or wild rice mix 2 x 400g cans black beans, rinsed and drained 3 shallots, finely diced 2 ripe avocados, chopped into small chunks 200ml Greek yogurt or natural yogurt, to serve 20cm piece cucumber, chopped into small chunks For the chimichurri 1 shallot, roughly chopped 3 garlic cloves, roughly chopped small pack coriander small pack flat-leaf parsley, leaves picked 2 tsp dried oregano 4 tbsp olive oil 4 tbsp red wine vinegar 1 red chilli, finely chopped Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll also need 6 large or 12 small metal or pre-soaked wooden skewer Method

1. First, make the chimichurri base. Put the shallot in a mini food processor with the garlic, herbs and oil. Pulse until finely chopped but still with some texture â&#x20AC;&#x201C; like a chunky pesto. Put 1 1/2 tbsp in a small bowl and set aside. Mix the red wine vinegar, chilli and 1 tbsp water into the remaining mixture and season. Chill until assembling. 2. Stir the cumin seeds and lime juice into the reserved 1 1/2 tbsp chimichurri base, then spoon all over the steak strips in a non-metallic dish. Give everything a good mix to coat, then marinate in the fridge for at least 30 mins, or up to 2 hrs. 3. Rinse the rice and put in a saucepan with triple the volume of water. Bring to the boil, then lower the heat, cover and simmer gently until cooked. Drain any remaining liquid, then spread on a tray to cool quickly. 4. When the rice is almost cool, stir in half the chimichurri sauce with the black beans, shallots, avocado and cucumber. 5. Thread the beef onto 6 large or 12 small skewers and heat the grill or a griddle pan to high. Grill for 3-4 mins each side, or griddle for 1-2 mins each side, depending on how well cooked you like your steak. Serve the rice on a platter with the skewers, lime wedges, yogurt mixed with lime zest and black pepper, and the remaining chimichurri.

Birthday party raising funds for charity A SOCIAL media page is celebrating its first birthday and raising funds for charity at the same time. The Costa Blanca South Chat Facebook page, which is used by its members to keep informed of local events and issues has been running a year and has 2,258 members. The venue, Bar Secano in Los Palacios, is situated between the villages of Rojales and Formentera Del Segura. The afternoon of fun starts at 5pm with a barbeque and other summer foods, catering for vegetarians as well as meat lovers. Organisers have also planned fun games, a raffle and live music which will start at 6 pm. BIG FM DJ Dean Alexanda will be providing the entertainment along with Bee Rumble and guitarist Mike

Swimmers’ busy weekend by patricia thompson

TORREVIEJA SWIMMERS had a busy end of season weekend in the water with competitions in Benidorm and Torre de la Horadada. On Saturday, three of the club’s team travelled to Benidorm for the XVII Memoria Juan Fuster Zaragoza Trophy, where races were divided into age categories. Amy Connolly swam first in 50m freestyle and gained a new personal best of 38:39; knocking three and a half seconds of her previous time; then Skye Burns was a close 4th in her 50m freestyle Infantil category with a time of 32:56. Zoe Connolly, swimming in the last individual race of the day, worked hard in her 100m individual medley race to knock 2 seconds off her recent personal best and winning 3rd place with an added prize of a free ticket to Aqualandia, Benidorm. Then on Sunday, the club was back in action, sea swimming at Torre de la Horadada. This year the organizers reversed the course making all 4 races swim anti-clockwise around the bay, constantly against the tide and wind - the hardest race from the last five years of competition at this location. Amy made a good swim in the 500m race being placed 9th in the Alevin category with a time of 12:09. Next it was time for the furthest distance race at 1500m. Zoe came in before her other team members being placed 6th in her Alevin category, with a time of 26:40. She was followed by Skye, a year younger, in the same category with a time of 29:00. Vicki Connolly won the Women’s Masters 50+ category and teammate Beryl Altabas came in 5th in the same category with a time of 36:15.

Supporters secure security by Jack Troughton GENEROUS DONATIONS have helped a horse rescue centre reach its target to build a new and secure perimeter around the Rojales sanctuary. Supporters have raised 13,000€ in three months to build new fencing around the Easy Horse Recue Centre following a series of thefts, break-ins, and leaving charity founders Sue and Rod Weeding “under siege” in their own home. Sue said they were “overwhelmed” by the generosity of supporters in helping secure the safety of the animals and their human carers. The centre needs final planning approval before work starts but she said the centre was driven by a passion to help animals. “The wonderful thing is so many people have now joined us on this journey, helping and supporting it in so many ways that we feel we are no longer on our own.” The Easy Horse Recue Centre relies on donations to care for more than 90 horses, ponies, and donkeys rescued from abuse, neglect and abandonment. The centre, just outside Rojales, is open to the public on the first Sunday of the month between 1pm and 4pm – and a free tour of the facilities with Rod starts at 2pm. Volkswagen Passat OWNERS OF successful businesses keep a tight rein on absolutely every aspect to deliver the best possible bottom

This mindset is reflected in the vehicles they drive. And so sensible forward thinkers cannot help but be attracted by the new Passat four door saloon from Volkswagen. And it’s a diesel. “But what about the emissions scandal?” I hear you cry. Yes, there are going to be software upgrades and there have been mutterings about this being detrimental to fuel economy. If, like me, you take the view that Volkswagen is probably not alone, then most diesel vehicles are going to have an issue. Also, this crisis only relates to Volkswagen’s diesel cars. That’s a key point when worrying whether software updates will affect fuel economy. VW’s petrol engines are the most fuel efficient I have tested and I still expect their diesel engines to be the industry leaders, after this storm has blown over. In 1.6-litre TDi Bluemotion SE Business guise the Passat is a vehicle that will return over 60mpg and can travel around 650 miles on its 70 litre tank, helped by reliable automatic stop/start. This is arrived at during normal everyday driving, not religiously sticking to 56mph as is often the case with these figures. VW also owns Bentley and refinements from these vehicles are creeping into the more attainable Passat. For instance, the intelligent cruise control, which, with the help of a radar, keeps the

Passat at a safe distance behind the car in front, automatically braking and accelerating as required. A similar system can be found in Volvos. This Business edition Passat scores highly all round. Its interior is finished to a high standard and clearly much thought has gone into placement of switches and de-cluttering the dashboard. With equipment levels that include heated front seats and even a heated steering wheel, occupants remain comfortable no matter what the climate. However, one qualm from both my wife and I is that over a long journey we ache and feel that more padding on the front seats would resolve this issue. Another surprise for me is the thin boot lid; it does not shut with a satisfying thunk, rather a tiny echo. It’s a surprisingly large vehicle too, with a cavernous boot that swallows all of our luggage with ease. Usually no matter what vehicle we travel in we end up having to put luggage inside the car but this is not necessary in the Passat, which is really refreshing. There is plenty of space inside, both in the rear and the front. This size is only really noticed when negotiating tight, narrow roads where the kerb is clipped by the nearside rear tyre. There is a useful camera for reversing and helpful bleeps alert the driver to obstacles. Equipped with a seven speed DSG automatic gearbox it can be driven like a manual if desired or there are paddle shifts either side of the steering wheel so that you can drive like a racing driver should the mood require. Whichever you choose the Passat should not disappoint. Bearing in mind that it is only a 1.6-litre it does provide reasonable performance. Greater performance can

be achieved with the 1.9-litre engine. While it will happily potter around the town at 30mph it will burst into life if necessary and although not the quickest it is fast enough. Between 30mph and 40mph the gearbox can be a little indecisive over revving when a gear change would be better. But of course this can be overcome if the automatic box is overridden. The sound of the diesel unit can be heard from inside but this is quickly removed at speed. Fitted with an electronic handbrake there is also a useful auto hold switch that can be turned on to counter rolling on a hill start. With no traditional ignition there is a push button start. Satellite navigation takes the strain and stress away from finding places and makes for a more leisurely journey and the system fitted in the Passat is generally easy to use and reliable. It is not infallible and does get confused with some of the roads in Normandy, France but quickly rights itself. The offer of finding a filling station when the fuel level is too low is certainly helpful. The Passat is also attractive. Although it is more angular than its predecessor it seems lower to the ground and more sporty, cutting a fine example in the car park. I like the electronically folding wing mirrors and the incorporated courtesy light that lights the way at night. The difficulties at Volkswagen have highlighted that there is a trade off between power, fuel efficiency and emissions in diesel engines no matter who makes them. Traffic police warn motorists TRAFFIC POLICE have issued a public plea for motorists to take extra care on the N332 following several accidents at the weekend. The warning comes following what has been described as “the worst day of the summer” for the road in the Torrevieja area on Sunday. The statement issued by the N332 Facebook page, which has over 68,000 members and is run by serving officers, read: “Three vehicles have been involved in a crash where one pregnant woman has been taken to the hospital and a new born baby was assisted on the roadside, both were involved in the same accident. This was not the end of the incident, due to this accident...there was a traffic jam which caused another accident with several vehicles and minors involved. These accidents are always caused by the same thing, the volume of vehicles on a one lane road with thousands of vehicles during the summer, and most parts of the year. As police officers, we feel powerless to see how every day there are accidents which could be avoided if a few years ago, the N332 would have been widened as it was done in Orihuela Costa, with 2 lanes in both sides of the road. Many signs have been installed, the last ones a few weeks ago with a cost of 1,000 euros. Politicians, and the Mayor of Torrevieja have protested about the current situation with the road but we are still suffering the traffic jams and accidents every day. We can only offer our help once the accident happens, but we need to spread the message and to ask for the politicians to help save lives and carry on the work improvements of the N332 which were passed years ago. It is very disgusting to see day by day how people lose their lives on the road. It is good to launch campaigns to prevent accidents but it is better to improve roads to avoid them....”
