Little Freddie ‘the fighter’
by Jack Troughton
Rose with daughter Denise on the pillion
Harley dream comes true PENSIONER ROSE Oldham has crossed another wish of her ‘bucket list’ of dream experiences after enjoying a spin across the Costa Blanca on the pillion of a powerful Harley Davidson motorbike. Read the full story on page 19.
TINY BABY Freddie Jackson is “doing amazingly well” say his proud parents after being born 12 weeks prematurely on a Spanish holiday intended to be a relaxing break for the young couple before a scheduled July birth. Born by emergency caesarean section and weighing the same as a bag of sugar, 2lb Freddie is now putting on weight in San Juan hospital in Alicante and is taken off an incubator three times a day to exercise his lungs. Parents Karla Hornby and Jordan Jackson, from Bolton, are now staying in a hotel near the hospital but say there is no “timetable” for when they can take their son the 1,400 miles home. Family and friends back in the UK have already raised thousands of pounds to help the stranded couple and Costa Blanca-based charity Grant A Wish has stepped in with practical assistance. Karla and Jordan were sitting by the pool of a Benidorm hotel dipping their toes in the water on Saturday when her waters suddenly broke – the 29-year-old, who already has a daughter Charlie, even, described the scene. “We were just relaxing around the pool, not doing anything strenuous, we had our feet in the water and were just talking,” she said. “Then my waters just went – it was a total shock. “I said to Jordan that my waters had broken – I was flapping a bit but he was very calm. I was crying in reception, the hotel staff were brilliant, an ambulance was called and Jordan was on the phone telling my mum and dad what had happened.” Karla was taken to the Marina Baixa Hospital and transferred to San Juan and its specialised baby unit. She said the emergency ‘C Section’ took place after she began to bleed heavily after contractions and the baby’s heart stopped. SURGERY “I was in a real state, I thought I was going to die,” added Karla, who said she was now feeling much better after surgery. Speaking on Tuesday, she said they were able to visit Freddie. “We can put our hands into the incubator and we can stroke him. The nurses say he likes being touched and listening to music. Residents challenge “paralysis”
Thursday, April 30 - Thursday, May 7 2015
by Jack Troughton
RESIDENTS OF a Costa Blanca urbanisation are fighting back in a bid to end the “political and legal paralysis” that affects their homes. They say a stalemate continues between the developer of Monte Pego and Pego Town Hall which not only affects their lives but also has an impact on local businesses and the economic prospects of the town. Homeowners have now formed the Asociacion de Vecinos de la Montana de Pego to be proactive to find solutions. Almost a year has passed since a High Court of Valencia ruling the developer MPSA should fulfil its obligations and complete the urbanisation’s now decaying infrastructure. Residents believe they are treated as ‘pawns’ in the 10 year battle between the developer and the town hall and want the local authority to step in a complete and repair roads, pavements, drains, street lighting and sewage – they believe they have paid almost 5 million Euros in local taxes during that time. In a statement from the new group, RTN was told because of the deterioration of Monte Pego’s once physical attractiveness, potential buyers were turning away and building on the urbanisation had “alarmingly” slowed down.
The entrance to Monte Pego
COMPOUND “At the same time, Pego town Hall seems to be doing nothing to revitalise this sector. Instead, a questionable communication style, intransparent administration procedures, and a lack of building incentives are compounding the problems.” The responsibilities for the infrastructure and maintenance are still the subject of court proceedings, but association President Dr Bernd Miller believes new initiatives can get construction back on track – and an alliance has been formed with local building companies. He called on the town hall to imple-
ment a more ‘foreign resident-friendly policy’ for residents contributing so much to the local economy during an ongoing financial crisis. And the association wants incentives from the council to encourage more people to move onto the urbanisation and invest in it. “The immediate objective is to remedy the infrastructural problems and safety hazards in the urbanisation,” said Mr Miller. “Ultimately, and in a collective effort with all interested individuals and groups, we want to help to turn the urbanisation Monte Pego again into a ‘residential jewel’ of this region.”
Expats give back to the community
THE ‘VOLUNTARY English Teaching Group’ has now given free language tuition for six sessions over four years to unemployed Spanish residents in Javea. These courses, facilitated by Javea Town Hall, and “Creama”, the unemployment office, are designed to help local people to speak English and/or German to improve their chances of employment in this multi-cultural region. On the 22nd April Javea’s Deputy Mayor Oscar Anton and Councillor Juan Luis Cardona presented certificates to the students who had successfully completed a 100 hour language course and passed their final exam, after which it was time for drinks and tapas for everybody. The Deputy Mayor said how pleased he was with the results of the various courses. The Voluntary Group is always happy to meet with anyone interested in joining this important project, especially English speakers with an intermediate level of Spanish and a reasonable level of English grammar. Volunteers are also always needed as classroom assistants and to help in the conversation groups. and you do not need to speak Spanish to do this. Around 160 Spanish expats and tourists still unaccounted for in Nepal crisis SPANISH AUTHORITIES announced that they were attempting to contact all its citizens known to be in Nepal at the time of the magnitude-7.8 earthquake on Saturday, including tourists and expatriates. by Jeanette Rice MANY SPANIARDS were waiting for armed forces planes to fly them home but with huge delays being experienced at Nepal airport it was not known at the time of going to press if this had happened. Spain sent an aircraft to Nepal on Monday which contained 30 tonnes of aid including food and medication for survivors, with UNICEF, Oxfam, Save the Children, Plan International and the Red Cross all working round the clock and calling for more aid parcels and human resources.

7-year-old discovers new dinosaur
BRINGING YOUR kids to work has its benefits. Seven-year-old Diego Suarez was playing outside with his sister while his parents, both geologists, studied rock formations in the Andes in southern Chile. As they were playing, Suarez uncovered a fossilized dinosaur bone which turned out to belong to a previously unknown species. Paleontologists called to the site eventually discovered bones from more than a dozen dinosaurs, including four near-complete skeletons. The scientists named the species Chilesaurus diegosuarezi, after its location and the boy who discovered it. Most of the Chilesaurus remains are from animals roughly the size of turkeys, though the species could reach almost 10 feet in length.
Samsung App helps Alzheimer’s patients remember their families
IF YOU’VE seen Still Alice, you know how important a smartphone can be for an Alzheimer’s patient -- it helps jog memories that might otherwise be lost. Samsung is clearly aware of this, as it just released a dedicated Backup Memory app to stimulate the memories of early-onset patients. The Android tool uses Bluetooth to detect when friends and family running the app are nearby. If they are, it’ll both identify the person and show user-uploaded photos and videos that recall past events. The app is currently very simple (Samsung still wants to add GPS locations, for instance), but it’s reportedly promising enough in early tests that it’s slowing down the effects of Alzheimer’s and making life just a little bit easier.

It’s Suma time again!
by Jeanette Rice MOST OF us know that twice a year, depending on your Town Hall, those Suma bills drop through the letter box and the last week has seen such an occasion. With final payment dates normally falling in the first week of June it can be a very expensive time depending on how many vehicles you have combined with the basura suma (waste and bins tax). Payment options are listed on the back of the bills but if you own a vehicle here and haven’t received your suma bill it is worth popping to your local suma office to find out why before the first week of June.
Many expats experience problems with their postal delivery but this is no excuse in the suma office eyes for late payments, and every day that the payment is delayed after the final due date interest is charged. Should you be in the process of selling your property or vehicle the legal requirements are for these bills to have been paid and of course it is always good not to have to pay any added interest. For further information contact the suma office on telephone number 965 292 000 or via the internet to find your local office www.suma.es

A hero’s story by Jack Troughton
unless they were in real need. However, after seeing the condition of the refugees, I decided from a humanitarian point of view to take them aboard as I anticipated that they would soon be landed at Oran in Algeria.” RAGGED He said the crowds included all classes of people – some very poor and “looking halfstarved and ill clad, attired in a variety of clothing ranging from boiler suits to old and ragged pieces of uniform.” And the captain noted how some people appeared to be carrying all their worldly possessions in suitcases, bags or “tied up in handkerchiefs.” The gangplank became choked with hu-

“
NAVAL HERO Captain Archibald Dickson packed his ship with hundreds of men, women and children to rescue them from the stricken city of Alicante in the last days of the Spanish Civil War. The SS Stanbrook sailed from the docks with 2,643 refugees on board in March 1939 – some of the 30,000 supporters of the doomed republic trapped by the advancing forces of General Franco. The Cardiff-born skipper ran a blockade of destroyers to reach Alicante after sailing from Marseilles on 17th March 1939 – arriving at night two days later. The Stanbrook remained tied up at the quay for several days as Capt Dickson waited instructions what his cargo would be – and was informed by telegram from the ship’s owners he should precede to sea “forthwith” unless he was likely to load his cargo. A day later the valuable cargo – tobacco, oranges and saffron – arrived at the port but so did thousands of people looking to escape the fascist forces. Many were soldiers and militiamen of the defeated Republican Army along with trade unionists, politicians, international brigade members, and foreign advisors. Capt Dickson – whose bravery was finally honoured in his home town earlier this month – later told the Sunday Dispatch newspaper in London: “Amongst the refugees were a large number of women and young girls and children of all ages’ even including some in arms. “Owing to the large number of refugees, I was in a quandary as to my own position, as my instructions were not to take refugees
manity and Capt Dickson contemplated leaving the quay but remained tied up because he feared so many people would be thrown into the water. He said the numbers on board made it almost impossible for anyone to move, people refusing to go down into the holds and if any space was found it was immediately filled by desperate refugees. “In all my experience at sea covering some 33 years, I have never seen anything like it and I hope I never will again,” said the 47-

year-old skipper. There was a last minute rush as rumours of an impending air raid spread and finally the crowded 230ft long Stanbrook left under cover of darkness, steering a zigzag course to avoid warships maintaining the blockade of Alicante. “We has only just got clear of the port when the air raid rumour proved to be true and within 10 minutes of leaving port, a most terrific bombardment of the town and port was made and the flash of explosions could be seen quite clearly from on board my vessel and the shock of the exploding shells could almost be felt. ALARM “The refugees appeared to think that every vessel which moved in sight was a Franco vessel coming to intercept them, and as a large number of refugees were armed, I was rather alarmed at what might have occurred had we sighted a Franco ship. “Many of the refugees stated that if a Franco vessel did intercept them, they were
prepared to sell their lives dearly.” Conditions on the 22 hour voyage to North Africa were atrocious. There were only two toilets on the entire ship and a shortage of both food and water – and when the Stanbrook eventually arrived in Oran, the French colonial authorities would not allow her to dock. After negotiations, women, children and the elderly were allowed ashore but the remainder remained on board for several more days – only allowed to land because of a feared outbreak of typhus. Capt Dickson was angry at the reception given to such desperate people and the conditions on board. “The appearance of the refugees is really pathetic, especially as they have not been able to wash or shave. None of them have even taken off their clothes.” The Stanbrook left Oran on 1st May, 1939, but in November, at the start of the Second World War, the 1,383 ton ship was torpedoed by a German submarine. She broke in two and all 22 men on board, including Capt Dickson perished.

Ferry sparks evacuation A rescued passenger’s photo of the stricken Sorrento
by Jack Troughton PASSENGERS AND crew aboard a ferry sailing between Mallorca and Valencia were evacuated on Tuesday afternoon as flames swept through the vessel. Fire broke out aboard the Sorrento as she headed for the Spanish mainland, some 17 miles off the coast of the Balearic island of Mallorca carrying 170 people and cargo. And three crew members were airlifted to hospital by helicopter for treatment suffering from smoke inhalation. Two are said to be in a serious condition. The ship, operated by Acciona Trasmediterranea, set sail from Palma shortly after noon and a call for help was made at around 1.50pm – the Spanish coastguard sending
four vessels to the scene. It is understood when the fire first broke out, the Sorrento’s captain did not believe the situation would require an evacuation but as the intensity of the blaze grew, passengers and crew abandoned ship, taking to lifeboats on the starboard side. The incident is already being investigated and El Pais reported it was initially thought the fire broke out in the engine room of the ship or in the areas used to carry vehicles. As 152 passengers – including a baby – were landed back at Palma yesterday evening, the Balearic Port Authority feared the Sorrento could sink in her current position off the tiny island of Dragonera.

Man cooked alive with 12,000 pounds of tuna
BUMBLE BEE Foods and two employees were charged Monday with violating safety regulations, following the death of a California worker who suffered the unimaginably brutal death of being cooked in an industrial oven with several tons of tuna. The company, its plant operations director and its former safety manager were each charged with three counts of violating Occupational Safety & Health Administration rules causing death. Prosecutors said that José Melena was cleaning a 35-foot-long oven at the company’s plant in Santa Fe in 2012, when oblivious co-workers loaded it with 12,000 pounds of tuna and turned it on. During the two hour cooking time, temperatures in the oven reach 270 degrees. The state’s occupational safety agency previously cited the San Diego-based company with violations for failing to properly assess the danger to employees working in large ovens.
London commuting more stressful than going to dentist
COMMUTING IN London is more stressful than moving house, going to the dentist or dealing with money matters. For those who have to put up with the stress of London Bridge, the Farringdon flood, South West Trains permanent shambles, or the near-daily travel chaos on the Tube, this will probably not come as a surprise. Unsurprisingly, London has one of the worst scores out of six of Europe’s major cities. Only Rome registers as more stressful. Some 80 per cent of London’s commuters said they were late at least once a month, while 49 per cent failed to get into work at all on at least one occasion last year. In total, 41 per cent of Londoners said their commute was becoming increasingly stressful. Unsurprisingly, UK commuters have lower life satisfaction, a lower sense that their daily activities are worthwhile, lower levels of happiness and higher anxiety on average than non-commuters. Average happiness levels begin to fall and anxiety levels begin to rise after the first 15 minutes of the commute to work.

Just the job by Jack Troughton KEY TRAINING for better jobs in the hospitality and tourism industry in Javea is being given to 15 people in Javea. The coaching is firmly supported by Councillor for Finance Oscar Anton and his colleague Juan Luis Cardona, Councillor for Economic Development; the third course has been launched – backed by ARX, the Association of Restaurateurs of Xabia. The employment programme is based around innovative dual training encompassing both theory and practice – the methods which proved a success in the previous two employment courses. The students are aged between 20 and 57-years-old and they represent six different nationalities making up Javea’s cosmopolitan community – Spanish, Belgian, Russian, French, Uruguayan and Italian. They will be taught all aspects of the hospitality sector and English over the coming months of their training – and work as ‘hands on’ trainees for 120 hours with members of ARX. Mr Anton said: “We are very proud to be able to assist employment through initiatives such as this, because given the economic situation we are going through, it is essential.” And Mr Cardona congratulated an initiative aimed at reducing the numbers of people out of work – and welcomed the latest unemployment data for Javea showing figures were “far below” the regional average.

When I have been there he has been fast asleep...I think he is going to be a daddy’s boy!” However, on Tuesday evening, Karla got her wish Freddie was away and breathing unaided. She said Charlie had travelled with grandparents to Spain to see her little brother. “Me and Jordan can go in whenever we like but they are rather strict with other visitors – Charlie couldn’t but when I explained she had come all the way from Manchester to see him, they moved him in front of the window.” She added: “We are likely to be here for months, there’s no time scale at the moment and we haven’t been able to hold him properly yet. “I just cannot wait to hold him – I will be a bit scared I will break him, he is so small. I don’t think I will be able to let him go!” And Karla, a jewellery retailer, said: “Grant A Wish has been absolutely amazing, I don’t have any words to thank them; I am speechless. “Everyone is doing so much to help us, it is brilliant. It restores your faith in human nature.” Jordan, 21, a driver with the Royal Logistics Corps, said his son was “a real fighter” and he was a very proud dad. He was due to report back to the Army yesterday (Wednesday) but will be given additional leave. “I didn’t panic when Karla’s waters broke, you just have to keep calm – if she saw me panic it would have been a lot worse.” And he said of his son: “I have seen him awake two or three times...it really makes you realise he is actually here and the other night he was there with his eyes open looking at me and squeezed my finger.” Jordan said Grant A wish had been “brilliant”. He said Karla was not allowed out of bed for too long and the charity had provided a car, English food, books, a DVD player and film. “It is all a massive help when you are here in a strange place”. Grant A Wish was able to provide a company car from partner Continental Wealth Management to get the couple mobile, a mobile phone allowing family to call from the UK, and some “home comforts”.

LIVERPOOL’S FAB Four were honoured in the massive musical show ‘Yesterday’ performed in Javea last weekend with a cast of 1,440 students. by Jack Troughton
Thousands packed into Plaza de la Constitucion in the historic Old Town on Friday night to watch a spectacular performance of music, dance, and drama, by the students and their teachers from 51 colleges across Valencia, Catalonia and the Balearics. There were up to 7,000 people in the audience to watch the performers aged between 12 and 17, while the sheer numbers visiting the Marina Alta resort filled hotels, restaurants and bars as families came to offer their support. Huge screens showed the monumental historical events of the sixties such as the construction of the Berlin Wall, the Algerian War, and the battle for equal rights in the United States. And the common thread holding the whole show together was the music of The Beatles – with tribute band The Bitters performing hits made famous by Paul, John, George and Rin-

Tourist, 100, robbed by ‘Samaritan’
A MAN posing as a Good Samaritan is thought to have mugged a 100-year-old tourist as he helped him to his feet after a fall. The American victim was visiting Gloucester, where he once lived, with his 70-year-old son when his pocket was picked, according to Gloucestershire Constabulary. The pair had just got off a bus outside a post office when the elder man lost his balance and fell to the ground. A passerby helped him up, but the following day he noticed a large amount of money, both pounds and US dollars, was missing from his bum-bag. A police spokesman said: “The money was in an envelope inside the bag. Also taken was a brown leather wallet containing a driving licence. The victim believes they were stolen by the stranger. The victim is said to be very distressed by the incident. Both men have now returned to the US.”

Future at stake

JAVEA MAYOR Jose Chulvi believes the town’s future over the next 20 years is at stake when Spain goes to the polls on Sunday 24th May. The politician was speaking to the faithful at the Jayan Cinema in Javea Port as he presented the PSOE party list for the vital ballot. And the socialist Party’s General Secretary in Valencia, Ximo Puig – himself a candidate for the presidency of the Generalitat – endorsed Mr Chulvi as the “best possible mayor”. He predicted the current mayor would find the doors of Valencia and Alicante governments open to him if re-elected, rather than the sometimes difficult relationship of the last four years. Good use was also made of the cinema’s projection facilities – a video introduced the 24 PSOE candidates while Mr Chulvi appeared in an indepth interview with two Spanish journalists. Mr Chulvi said he feels even stronger with more enthusiasm than before the 2011 elections and took to the stage to make a speech in Castilian, Valencian, and English.

GENEROUS He thanked family, friends, and colleagues for their support over the last four years and the town’s residents “who have treated me with a generosity that I will never forget”. He said everyone in the PSOE list was equally important and paid tribute to those working behind the scenes. “This is the best team that anyone could wish for.” Mr Chulvi promised the coming election campaign would not involve negative attacks on the personalities of opponents. “No one will hear us say a bad word that is not our style.”
However, he said: “In these elections there is much at stake, because they will decide the future of Javea for the next 20 years. “Javea is a coveted place and despite all the damage that was done in the past, even more damage could be done. All that has been achieved in protection and harmonisation could be lost.” And to a standing ovation he said the party needed the strength of its members and supporters to continue the work already underway. “Remember that we are not going to fail, neither will I fail you.”
BLUES FUSION guitarist Markus K proved to be a welcome addition to the Costa Blanca music scene when he entertained an audience at Benidoleig’s Art House. He introduced new arrangements of songs by stars such as JJ Cale, John Martyn, and the Rolling Stones, as well as playing his original compositions. And skilful use of a ‘looper’ machine with background percussion, guitar and vocals enable Markus to produce a sound normally associated with a full band, while his laid back rapport with the audience was warmly received – while music fans across the world could listen to the gig being broadcast live on the internet. Afterwards, the musician commented: “What a great audience! I love playing these small, intimate venues...and that was as good as it gets.” Anyone wanting to book Marcus for a house party or small venue can see www.headlinerscb.com or call Andy on 96 684 1131.

Yapping dogs DEAR PEOPLE of Torrevieja, With respect, can anyone tell me what to do (legally) about yapping dogs and their mess. I recently went to a friend´s house in Calle Orthello and we could not hear ourselves speak because of the constant yapping of a dog next door. I then visited my cousins house in the next road and the dog downstairs didn’t stop barking during the time I was there. Why don´t dog owners understand this is wrong. I hate cruelty to any animal and our local papers are full of articles and appeals to help abandoned and abused animals but who is there to help people who have to put up with the constant noise and mess. Where I live in Jardin Del Mar the field is almost covered in dog mess. It seems the owners don’t want the mess on their own doorsteps so put it on someone else’s.
Not all the same IN RESPONSE to last week’s ‘ Letter of the week’ I feel it is a shame that this lady feels like she has to hold back a little of herself. I live in a lovely residential area where everyone looks after each other. This may be a unique place, but maybe not all people are back stabbing or pack like. I can understand that maybe some of the more ‘British’ areas are like that but let’s not make out that it is such a general problem. Maybe my age has something to do with the fact that people are more sympathetic and helpful but it would be nice to believe that this is their normal behaviour. I do hope that she can eventually begin to trust people a little more or maybe it is just because she likes to keep herself to herself. Stan Halfpenny

I have been living in a very peaceful, quiet and picturesque Spanish village for a number of years. I have extremely pleasant neighbours who have been thoughtful and kind when I have found myself in need of help. We are all very community minded but some things we just can’t deal with. Next door but one has been empty for a while but we now find that a family of gypsies have taken up residence. The Local Police and Guardia have been called and it seems that they have ‘paperwork’ that entitles them to live there. They have no water or electricity so as you can imagine with the warmer weather coming the problems this can and will cause. The noise is bad enough with over 15 people living in a 3 bedroom house but I can also see the problems with vermin etc I appreciate that they need to live somewhere but does it have to be next to me! Harleys have growing appeal by Jack Troughton
MEMBERS OF the Costa Blanca expat press corps had a thrilling ride to Relleu to see the work of charity Make A Smile and its self-sufficiency farm project. Guests of the Costa Blanca Espana Harley Davidson Biker Group, they got to ride on the back of some of the 35 machines heading for the hills and the market garden aimed at helping EMAUS.
Make A Smile volunteers gave a cheering welcome to the bikers as they roared into the project to enjoy a party complete with “great food” courtesy of the BBQ Shop in Calpe and entertainment by Niamh O’Sheehan and Gatecrash. The biker group is helping raise funds to help the children cared for by EMAUS and spokesman Peter Emmett said:
“Our members are totally committed to supporting Tony Grande and his Make A Smile charity throughout 2015. “It was a humbling experience to see just how much effort has and is being put in to improve the lives of EMAUS youngsters.” For further information on Make A Smile, visit www.makeasmile.es or www.facebook.com/makeasmile.es

Angela presented a biography of the legendary Eva Peron and followed a brief history of the last 10 years from group leader Peter Atkinson. The group meets nine times a year, every month between October and June, and each is open to any member of U3A. During its life, the group has heard 83 talks from 24 different speakers – if the pattern continues, the 100th presentation will be in the spring of 2017. Harley dream comes true PENSIONER ROSE Oldham has crossed another wish of her ‘bucket list’ of dream experiences after enjoying a spin across the Costa Blanca on the pillion of a powerful Harley Davidson motorbike. by Jack Troughton Harley owner Peter Emmett and Rose’s daughter Denise and son-in-law Keith got together to sprinkle a little magic ahead of her 81st birthday celebrations. Peter, press officer for the Costa Blanca Espana Biker Group – a happy band of Harley riders – took Rose, from Hyde in Greater Manchester, for an hour long ride on his stylish Electraglide machine. Rose was ‘set up’ at a local cafe and further surprised by a large gathering of friends at the end of her journey for a special birthday lunch at Kosta Restaurant in Moraira. Plucky Rose enjoyed the thrill even if she remained at ground level – her last bucket list achievement was a parachute jump with the Red Devils in aid of Help for Heroes. She said afterwards: “What an experience – I did not want it to end! Peter played Glenn miller music for me throughout the ride, which was magical.” Rose is pictured on the bike with daughter Denise on the pillion, surrounded by friends, including Peter (far right).

ALTHOUGH ST George, with or without the dragon, may not be as popular globally as St. Patrick, the Day is celebrated around the world by branches of The Royal British Legion. by Keith Nicol Last Thursday, the Orihuela Costa and District Branch of The Royal British Legion were at The Emerald Isle on 23rd April to celebrate England’s Patron Saint. The day started with a parade with the ever popular Torrevieja Pipes and Drums leading the way. This was followed by the presentation of standards of the Branch, the Royal Naval Association, the Royal Marines Association and the Royal Air Force Association. The highlight of the parade was heralded by the Chelsea Pensioners from London, who once again travelled over especially for the event. All association members then marched to the Emerald Isle. Branch Vice Chairman and organiser of the day, Eddie Coleman, welcomed everyone and invited The Counsellor for the Coast Martina Scheurer, to officially start proceedings. The many stalls were kept very busy throughout the day along with many acts performing to keep the crowds entertained with the afternoon activities hosted by Simon Morton. The raffle on the day raised 850€. Club members wished to say: Thank you for everyone who supported the day. Further information is available at the Orihuela Costa Branchof the RBL at: www.britishle-

By Jack Troughton WINE TASTING with Javea U3A moved into the 21st Century with a smart phone ‘app’ that rates and awards points for bottles being sampled. The monthly meeting of the Wine Appreciation Group – WAGS – was held at La Cocina in Javea Port and 41 members gather to test the white, rose, and red wines selected by Glynis and Michael Ballantyne. The couple were enthusiastic about the new ‘toy’, the app discovered during their research – the Ballantynes and friends having fun comparing their opinions against other tasters over the internet. And Glynis and Michael also revealed friends had given their choice of wines a road test before the meeting. Interestingly, they said the results proved cheaper wines were just as acceptable as the more expensive bottles. Group leader Geoff Woodward thanked the pair for an enlightening and humorous presentation before everyone enjoyed lunch. In June the group will take a day trip to Bodegas Daniel Belda. When will the banks realise...?
Follow us on Facebook! www.facebook.com/roundtownnews
At long last I’m beginning to feel quite excited regarding the banks selling insurance. Why? Because, I have continually mentioned that the banks should stick to their core business and leave insurance to the specialists. Both estate agents and banks appear to think that insurance is an easy way to compensate their decreasing normal business which, during the recession, becomes more difficult. Wrong – insurance, if done correctly, is a heavy commitment both financially and time wise. The staff have to be fully trained and regulated on all the policies, so they can answer a clients many questions correctly and ensure the right choice is made for their needs. This can take at least half an hour to complete a policy, if you are lucky. There are then claims to handle and, of course, renewals. So my questions is – how do the banks, who now seem to appear very short staffed, because the queues are becoming longer, plan to cope with the time required to sell correctly? One of my staff was recently waiting patiently in a queue in a bank, whilst the cashier was trying to sell insurance as instructed. When the English lady asked what that particular policy covered, she was told “everything”. I hope the various banks are starting to realise how demanding and time consuming, for both their staff and clients, the insurance side of their business actually is. It will be very good when the banks appreciate it is not profitable and discontinue this “service” and this can only be good news for their clients, because if the bank staff do not have the knowledge or the time
to offer insurance, how does an expat know what they are purchasing. The service from the banks, for the clients and the insurance industry will only improve when they decide to concentrate on their main business - banking. Watch this space. I know summer is coming because the chiringuitos in Javea are starting to be built and here begins a few months of total chaos. But hey, this is what Spain is all about. Some of us run away to cooler climates and miss all the fun! If you are doing this, or going on a trip – do not go without travel insurance. No one can predict what is going to happen – an accident or illness can overtake us at any time. Medical costs can be prohibitive, especially if you need to return home with medical assistance. My Company offers an extremely good travel insurance policy – it is not as cheap as a Spanish one but far more comprehensive and even accepts some basic pre-conditions. Don´t take chances – it is not worth it. Having an accident or becoming ill on holiday is a nightmare in itself. For such a small cost, you could save yourself, and your family, a vast amount of stress. Some of you will be aware that I am the president of a small charity based near Torrevieja. I set this charity up in memory of my son, Paul Cunningham who sadly died of spinal cancer at 33. He spent a number of months in a Sue Ryder hospice, along with myself caring for him and I obviously learnt how important this type of care is, to both the patient and the family, especially when I realised that in Spanish national
health hospitals, hospice care is not available and they will discharge you, with little or no support, to finish your days at home. My charity is able to offer palliative care in the home and, where available, equipment to support you and the nurses. I am very proud that we have been able to help seriously ill people and make their last days as comfortable and peaceful as possible in their own home. Unfortunately, we can only help as our funding allows and the only way we can achieve this is by donations, with the three charity shops, fundraising and a group of wonderful volunteers. If those reading this article would like to donate anything, please, please do. I am always appreciative of any donations or help that anyone can offer the charity as, along with other charities, PCN is finding it difficult to help as many people as we would wish to. For more information, on any aspect of the charity or fund raising, please call Diane (mornings only) on 96 679 0363. During the twenty five years that I have lived and worked in Spain, I have heard many rumours regarding myself, many of which I have found both amusing and ridiculous but it staggers me where they originate from and why would anyone be that interested in my life, as it is just a continual round of hard work, with my business and the charity? Of course, I do have a life of my own. However, the latest rumour is that I have moved to Greece. How would that work? How can I be expected to operate my business whilst living in Greece – I am not Shirley Valentine – I can only dream!

Still time to build productive raised beds by
Dick Handscombe Holistic gardener and author
IF YOUR garden suffers from shallow soil or large underutilised terrace areas one or more raised beds are an ideal way to make the garden more productive, especially by growing some of your own vegetables. As it is only the start of May there is still time to build them and grow crops for late spring and summer consumption. WHAT IS A RAISED BED? In our popular vegetable growing book ‘Growing Healthy Vegetables in Spain’ we defined a raised bed as an elevated area of deep rich soil mix built up within retaining walls to allow it to be worked with less bending.. There are four basic types. A four sided box constructed so that soil can be worked from all sides without walking on it. A three sided box built onto an existing wall. A narrow terrace on a sloping site. A series of raised beds on a sloping site as illustrated. HOW DEEP SHOULD THE SOIL BE? A minimum height of 30cm will provide a depth of soil sufficient for the roots of most vegetable plants and many flowering plants and shrubs. A maximum height of 70 to 80cm would allow the bed to be worked without much bending and also from a stool, chair or wheelchair. The most comfortable height will depend on the height of the person or persons who will be working the raised bed. Deep beds can be used for trees and even palms. Any intermediate heights depending on the materials you have available for building the walls and the amount of good soil/compost/manure available or you are willing to buy in. HOW WIDE AND LONG SHOULD THE BED BE? Width of beds. A maximum width of 1.5m if the layout of your raised bed/beds will allow you to work from both sides. A maximum width of 70 to 80cm if the raised bed is against a wall or hedge which will only allow it to be
worked from one side. If you build raised beds any wider you will need to walk on the soil which will consolidate it and defeat the reason for building the raised beds in the first place. Length of beds. The length of a raised bed can be anything from one metre to twenty metres or more. However it may be more practical to design a layout with several shorter beds with the space between wide enough to accommodate a wheelbarrow or wheelchair.. WHAT CAN RAISED BEDS BE MADE FROM? The walls could be constructed with railway sleepers, long logs, old doors or panels, dry stone walls, cemented brick or stone , blocks or peat blocks. The advantages and disadvantage of each are discussed in Chapter 3.5 of ’Growing Healthy Vegetables in Spain’. We prefer long lasting cemented natural stone, rendered block walls or wooden railway sleepers. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF RAISED BEDS? The practical benefits are as follows. You do not need to walk on the soil which means that you can use every square centimetre for growing crops. Therefore the soil will not be compacted by your weight. They can be filled with a light soil/sand/compost/manure mix which is fertile, well draining and easy to work and unlikely to be compacted by heavy rains followed by hot baking sun. The paths between and around the beds can be clear of weeds and mud. They can either be pointed rock slabs, cm of stone chippings laid over black plastic sheeting or trodden down deep straw. You can use them in a garden which has no topsoil. Even on solid rock or a previously concreted area. A drip or porous pipe irrigation system can be easily set up. Anything can be grown in soil depths of 40cm or more including potatoes and Jerusalem artichokes. Spreading vegetables such as courgettes, cucumbers, trailing tomatoes, capers and nasturtiums can be cascaded
down the outside of the walls to reduce the space taken up on the top of the bed. If you allowed trailing vegetables to cascade down three walls of a two metre long one metre wide raised bed and grew climbing plants up one metre canes an three sides you would effectively increase the growing space from two to ten square metres! It is easy to install tunnel cloches made to fit the beds for winter plant protection and summer shading for leaf crops that can wither in the sun. Plantlets can be conveniently raised under cloches if you have the room. The maximum productivity will be achieved by constantly filling any space freed when harvesting crops with new plantlets or fast maturing crops from seeds.. They are easy to extend if you have the space. A number of raised beds could be hidden away in various parts of the garden if you do not want a large dedicated area. They are particularly user friendly for child, aged and infirm gardeners. And of course although we have concentrated on the use of raised beds for vegetables they can be used to grow trees including palms, accommodate rockeries and also attractive general flower beds. This is mentioned in Chapter 2.5 Design Manageable Flower Beds in ‘Your Garden in Spain – From planning to planting and maintenance’.

Getting answers in Spain Have you heard about this really useful lunch seminar that takes place regularly here in Costa Blanca? In the last couple of months experts from five local companies have answered over 900 questions from the people who have attended. I think this is fantastic and a really great opportunity. How wonderful would it be to be able to ask the experts in various fields about how things work in Spain? Once again the highly respected UK & Spanish companies based in Costa Blanca are inviting all British, Irish & European nationals, spending time or living in Spain, to a meeting to answer all the questions they have regarding life in Spain. Some of the topics that will be covered will be as follows:How can I make my savings grow? How will the changes to pensions affect you? What are the changes to thresholds, limits and ages for occupational or personal pensions? Inheritance law and taxes in Spain, what is best for me and my family? Wills. Do I need a Spanish or UK will or both? If you are transferring money regularly to Spain, where can you get the best currency exchange rates? How can I get the best deal for Landlines, Mobiles, British TV &
the internet? How the Spanish funeral system affects people from the UK? Experts from five companies will also be providing professional advice on Tax, Pensions, Investments, Currency Exchange, Spanish Law, Wills and Funeral Plans. Everybody who wishes to attend the event can send their questions in advance and the answer will be provided at the meeting. How fantastic is that!! We could have all done with this type of event ages ago. Once all the questions have been answered then everybody will get a free lunch at Bernies and Sol Park Tenis. The events will begin at 12 noon on Wednesday 13th May 2015 in El Campello and Tuesday 19th May in Moraira. Lunch will be served at 1.30pm To register your question and to attend this unique event you can e-mail freelunchspain@gmail.com with your name address and telephone number or call 966 799 070. Spaces are limited so I am off to register right now. The thing is I have about ten questions that need answers. Apparently the experts will have an answer for each one! Great news.

YET AGAIN what another country does or doesn’t do could have huge implications of the rest of Europe and the Western world.
THE CLOCK is ticking for the Greek government to pay back the International Monetary Fund over €1bn (£720m) in loans in early May, as well as fund €1.4bn Treasury bill redemptions, and other major payments, including coupon payments on Greek government bonds. It would appear that the Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis has been sidelined in Greek debt negotiation talks, but as Holly Cook from Morningstar says “The situation hasn’t changed that much, no matter who is actually doing the talking, they can’t stray too far from what their original mantra was, because their original mantra was all about anti-austerity... They’ve got a relatively tight margin for maneuver.” Investors should be prepared for ”a messy few months” for Greek financial markets as chances of a possible sovereign default in the country remain high, JP Morgan Asset Management chief market strategist for Europe Stephanie Flanders warns. So what are the implications for the rest of Europe, contagion financial and economic, the question is how severe this contagion would be. The continent’s politicians and regulators seem to think the impact would be relatively small, saying that Europe’s banks have reduced their cross-border exposure to Greece and that general confidence in the future of the eurozone is much stronger than it was a few years ago. But others think this is too complacent. The truth is that no one knows for sure. Also for Europe and especially the UK if the pessimists are right and Greece’s exit creates a European-wide financial and economic crisis Britain will certainly be hit extremely hard. Almost half of the UK´s trade is with Europe so a new economic slump on the Continent would hammer exports and cost jobs. If there is financial contagion its effects will have a severe impact on the large UK banking and financial sector. However, if the optimists are right and the financial contagion impact of Grexit is mild the UK economy could carry on growing. If a Grexit happens the value of the Euro will fall even further against the major currencies we are currently seeing a foreign exchange rate where £1 gives you 1.40 euro, and $1 gives you 0.920 Euro, if Greece were to default we could even see you getting 1.50 euro or more for your pound. Getting back your Bankia’s shares investment (Part III) 5 key figures and dates OUR FIRM is helping many consumers to take legal actions against Bankia. Being such an important issue, and bearing in mind the amount of information available, some even contradictory, through this article, we would like to provide some figures relevant to the case. 1. Before July 2011, Bankia informed consumers and potential buyers of their shares through brochures, prospectus, etc. that the Bankia Group and the BFA Group (“owner” of Bankia) had very significant profits, which depending on the periods, were stated as between 35.000.000€ to 195.000.000€. BFA published on its website, on the 15th of July 2011, days before the massive shares sale (19/07/2011), regarding the financial situation and stress testing of BFA-BANKIA group that “... BFA-Bankia has an excess of capital, more than enough to cope with extreme scenarios of maximum tension and to assure their customers, creditors and counterparties, that in case of a sharp deterioration in the economic scenario, the entity will carry out its functions and address their obligations, as it has done so far. “ 2. 8th of December 2011, the EBA (European Banking Authority) notified through the Bank of Spain that the additional capital requirements for the “Bankia Group” were 1.329.000.000€, basing that decision on September 2011 figures. This coming so shortly after the IPO of Bankia (under the guise of being a solvent, solid and profitable entity), 3. Bankia proceeded on the 4th of May 2012 to submit to the CNMV (Comisión Nacional del Mercado
de Valores) the annual accounts which indicated a profit of 304,748,000€, but just a few days later, requested the bailout and intervention of the Restructuring Fund Banks (FROB). On the 25th of May 2012, 21 days later, Bankia informed the CNMV, the approval of a new set of annual accounts for 2011, this time audited, showing a loss of 2,979.000.000€. Bankia finally asked for a capital injection of 19.000.000.000 € 4. George’s day in style LOCAL BUSINESSES and the expat community united together to celebrate in style St George’s day on 23rd April at La Estación del Mar in Alfaz del Pi and raise funds for the Alfaz del Pi food bank. by Jeanette Rice
Nicolas Rush and Stephen Shaw
RTN caught up with some of the organisers during the event to find out more about behind the scenes planning that was involved in producing such a well organised day. Nicolas Rush from Corona Blinds explained that “what you see here is a culmination of almost a years planning since the last St George’s day event, not just from me but many other businesses and volunteers who made the event possible”. Chatting with two of the other organisers, Stephen Shaw from Pride Construction and Sonny from the Curry Pot it was clear how passionate they all were about the community and giving something back, not just them but the many others who had worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make it happen. Over 300 expats attended the event, the majority wearing the traditional red and white colours of St George, and the station bar was a glory of flags inside and out. With BBQ style food being served and the Royal British Legion stall you could be forgiven for feeling a little piece of England was here in Spain. Throughout the afternoon there was live music with the well known local D J Bob Hodge ensuring everything ran smoothly. First up to perform was a band called “The Coffin Dodgers”. Chris, Colin, Jem and Simon entertained the crowd with popular rock songs and ballads, followed by Vince Tracey. Next was a young man called Rob Richards who played the guitar and continued with the rock style theme. Also performing were “Sugar Shack”, a duo comprising of Sean Lock and Duncan Picket (part of the band “Lock and Load”), who had the expats up dancing until the end. The musicians were sponsored by local businesses involved to ensure that all funds raised at the event went to the charity with an amazing total of 2,630 euros being raised during the afternoon. Organisers said that they had liaised closely with the local Town Hall, and were given details of what items to buy for the food bank, which they are now in the process of doing.

Valencia, a treat for all the senses
IN VALENCIA you can enjoy the spring next to the sea. The beaches and promenade come alive, allowing you to enjoy the sunshine and balmy temperatures that herald the coming of summer. The open air terraces invite passersby to try rice dishes, tapas, a refreshing glass of horchata or an ice cream while sitting in the soft sea breeze… There are lot of things to do in Valencia, as this city has plenty of monuments and historical buildings. The central Market is the largest of Europe with a surface area of over 8000 square meters. Inside you can find many things from more than 1000 stalls: fresh fish, vegetables, meat, fruit... You have to go inside to feel the atmosphere of the market, and being surrounded by the smells and colours of this place. Other of its most emblematic monuments are the Silk market (declared by UNESCO as part of Humanity’s Heritage), Round Square (a small interior square surrounded by small and narrow streets, inviting you to explore the old quarter) and the Cathedral. An important part of this wonderful city is the City of Arts and Sciences, whose buildings feature an IMAX theater , the Hemisfèric, and the largest aquarium in Europe , the Oceanogràfic, where we can sail the seven seas with dolphins, penguins, sharks ... Valencia is an amazing city and has much to offer, that´s why in Beniconnect Travel Agency we have organized a city break from the 17th to the 19th of June to discover it. It includes a luxury coach, 2 nights in a 4*hotel half board, a city tour with an official guide, travel insurance and agency rep to accompany ONLY 149€ pp! showbiz goss Around this time last year BBC Two aired spoof comedy show W1A, and series 2 started up on Thursday 23rd, starring Hugh Bonneville as Ian Fletcher, Head of Values at the BBC. The show uses real life people as part of their plots including motormouth Jeremy Clarkson, mostly because he´s a ´great source of material´ Hugh told the Radio Times. Top cast includes David Tennant as the narrator.
It was Record Store Day a week ago, and to celebrate the fine event they came up with the rather novel idea of posing the question ´what’s the first album you ever bought with your own money, and that can include any collection of songs on vinyl, tape, CD, even download.´ Yvette Caster tweeted ‘The Bodyguard Soundtrack, on tape. Whitney Houston at her finest! Still fantastic!’ OK folks, so what was your first purchase?

Write ´Femininity is a Beautiful Thing´ 100 times Ashleigh! BEARING THE title ´Mr Womaniser´ Russell Brand is now claiming not only a new life of celibacy, but wanting to be called a feminist as well! … yep! You read right folks! Has he finally lost the last nut and bolt that´s keeping him together? Russell was interviewed by Ashleigh Rainbird of The Mirror at the premiere of his new politically driven movie ´The Emperor´s New Clothes´, so there will be a wee dab of attention grabbing in there to boot! I´ve done a fair amount of Brand bashing in the past, based on his nonsense of a marriage to Katy Perry, but after admitting to going a lot crazy in the bedroom Olympics department when they split after 14 months, bit by bit Russell has started to impress with his rants about how politicians and corporations are slowly sucking the life out of us! Back to the feminism issue Russell said “I grew up in old sexist Essex, I’ve got loads to learn on the subject of feminism, I think the loss of femininity in our culture is to the detriment of us as men,” a statement reporter Rainbird scoffed at when she wrote “Er, to be honest we’re not entirely sure what he is trying to say with that one, but here’s hoping he brushes up on his feminism knowledge soon, eh?” Surely when the person you are interviewing speaks you should try and get on it Ashleigh, leastwise not admit to being dumb enough to let it pass you by! Sadly Ashleigh I think you got lost in your own overgrown feminist agenda and completely missed what yer man was putting out there. Femininity is such a beautiful thing, and in my opinion Russell was simply lamenting its loss. Latest Bond movie ´Sceptre´ will be released on November 6th, but the story today is not about the filming, but about mobile phones. Samsung and Sony have been offering ridiculous amounts of dosh for their smartphones to be placements in the movie, but Columbia Pictures president Andrew Gumbert said “James Bond only uses the ‘best,’ and in our minds, Sony and Samsung are not the ‘best’!” Cool Andrew!!
Link of the week YouTube video showing the finish of a horse race with the elastic on jockeys pants broken ´Blake Shinn in a cracking finish!´
Dreaming of being in a band together from their childhood, Noel and Liam Gallagher wrote ideas on their bedroom wall, boyhood scribbles that eventually turned into the song ´Wonderwall.´ A reunion has been gently gathering momentum over the last year or so, and with nothing overtly physical or verbally abusive taking place, it’s looking like it could well be game on next year. Oasis were nominated for 91 awards and won 36 of them.

Torn....
I am 28, and thought I was in a committed relationship, until my partner’s best friend declared his love for me. I always thought he was a nice guy, but didn’t think I had any romantic feelings towards him. I was happy with my boyfriend, but since this man admitted how he feels, I can’t stop thinking about him. Every time we see each other my feelings for him grow stronger. He desperately does not want to hurt his friend, but he says he could not go through life having never told me the depth of his feelings. Sometimes, there is nothing more appealing to a person, than knowing someone is in love with them. You are naturally feeling flattered. I would suggest giving yourself time to see if these emotions fade. If they don’t, and get stronger - then you have some serious thinking to do about your relationship, and future with your boyfriend. Inevitably, someone will get hurt if you decide to go with this friend, but no one should live a lie.
Scared to go out We were burgled while away on holiday. Since then I haven’t felt safe, and have problems leaving the house. I have panic attacks, and am constantly looking at people on the street, thinking it could have been them. A lot of our personal things were taken, that can’t be replaced, and I am so sad about it. We were insured, but it doesn’t replace the precious mementos. After something like this happens, you will naturally go through a period of feeling violated. As far as the practical things are concerned, get an alarm, and make your house difficult for anyone to enter - a good security Firm will help you with this. When I was burgled, the Police Officer said to me, ‘get yourself a dog, and a big one’. Thieves might think twice if there is a dog around. If you are having problems coping, then it might help talking to your Doctor about the panic attacks. And remember, if you let them ruin your life, they will have won. Write to Sara in confidence. Make extra money this summer as a host family for Chit Chat FOR 35 years the Chit Chat Language School has been running its Summer School programme for Spanish students from all over Spain to come and study English. Do you live in Javea, Benitachell, Calpe, Denia, Gata, Moraira or Pedreguer? During the day the students are taught at the Chit Chat facilities in Javea, and after school hours and evenings are spent with their British host families. If you are a British family living in Benitachell, Denia, Gata, Javea, Moraira or Pedreguer then please note that more Host Families are needed for this summer due to strong demand. Many Spanish parents regard their children learning the English language as one of the highest priorities of their education, and despite the continuing economic recession more and more children want to attend the Chit Chat programme. The students are not just taught all day in English at the Chit Chat facilities, they are also ‘immersed’ in everything English by staying with a British host family. This way they also learn some of our customs, experience British cooking, and see how British people live. The students leave feeling far more confident and speaking much better English than when they arrived and everybody has great fun during their stay. You can request to have 2, 3 or 4 children, and you can also request the sex and age groups ranging from 8 to 16. The courses are for two, three or five weeks’ duration. The children are at home with you overnight, and go off to the
Chit Chat school by bus for the day, then return (again by bus) about 5pm-ish and are with you for the evening. Apart from having the family evening meal together, this is when the host family comes into its own and the time can be used to really get to know the students and encourage them to use their English and to participate in British family life. No Spanish speaking needed! On Saturday the children usually go on organised trips to Benidorm although some prefer to stay at home with their Host Family. There is absolutely no need for the Host Family
to speak Spanish themselves. Indeed, the very idea is to speak English with the children the whole time so that for their length of their stay they are exposed fully to the English language. A Rewarding Experience! Finally, it should also be mentioned that financially it also pays well to be a Host Family; and if you are in need of earning extra funds throughout the summer this could be a very good opportunity for you. Call 650 426 677 to speak with Caroline Sinfield, the local Supervisor for Chit Chat. See their advert every week in Round Town News.

Priestley the knife
CARELINE THEATRE is busy rehearsing its spring production of the JB Priestley classic ‘An Inspector Calls’ and its sharp attack on the wayward principles of English society in the Victorian and Edwardian era.
by Jack Troughton
Inspector Goul (Andy Headford-Lord) questions Mrs Birling (Marian Carter).
The highly respected drama is set in 1912 and was first performed in 1945 in the former USSR – not being unveiled in Britain until the following year. And set in a fictitious northern town, Priestley shows his own socialist beliefs in a plot that is centred on the prosperous middle-class Birling family being quizzed by the inspector about the suicide of a young middle class woman – exposing her exploitation, abandonment, and
social ruin leading up to her death. Taking the role of director for the first time is Careline’s Scott Hamer, who has worked his cast hard but made rehearsals an enjoyable time. An Inspector Calls runs from Thursday 21st May until Saturday 23rd May at the Careline Theatre in Alcalali. Performances start at 8pm and tickets are 12€ and can be reserved by calling 652 294 750 or by email to carelineboxoffice@gmail.com.
U3A heads southbound MEMBERS OF U3A Vall Del Pop enjoyed a whistle stop tour of southern Spain, taking in Jerez, Ronda and Gibraltar. The coach left Jalon for the busy resort of Benalamadena and an overnight stop, after enjoying an opportunity to visit the busy resort and its bustling marina. And the next morning it was time to head for Jerez where the party visited the world famous equestrian school and the Tio Pepe bodega – naturally taking time to taste the distinguished sherry. The next day and the coach headed inland and into the mountains to discover Ronda. Maps were handed out to allow the party to explore the historic town – and the “crowning glory” of its bridge across a deep gorge. Gibraltar was the third leg of the trip and the party took time to take in the history of the iconic rock – and go shopping...to Marks and Spencer.

Removing Bad Image virus HELLO AUNTY VIRUS. Can you please help/ advise me? I have today removed the Bad Image virus from my PC by using system restore, and sending my PC back to before I acquired this virus, it has removed it from my desktop, but will it still be on my PC? If so how do I remove it? Regards, Barry Aunty says: System Restore may remove the virus for the time being, but it may not remove the virus files altogether. If you know what you downloaded and the date prior to getting the virus, check your “programs” list in control panel, and make sure there are no “rogue” programs installed around that time. Sometimes, if you install “free” software, and rely on the default install settings, they can also install other software which you may not want (and which may cause problems!) Running your antivirus program, then “anti- malwarebytes”, and then “adaware” to make sure all traces are removed. Response: Thanks for this advice I’ll try to do it later
Printing problems Hello Aunty, I have an Acer aspire, and an Epson sx210 printer. For some unknown reason the printer will not print any email. It works fine with any other printing I have to do. Any idea’s? Thanks. Roger Aunty says: It could be a few things: It could be your browser that you are using to view the email... perhaps using a different browser will correct the problem. If that fails, then sometime uninstalling and then reinstalling the printer can help
Windows Security and Windows Defender Dear Aunty, I am a little confused by your article in April 23rd edition of the RTN with regard to Windows Security. I run Windows 8.1 which came with Windows Defender. I understood this to be an Antivirus, but you say W8.1 does not come with any security and needs to be downloaded (such as Microsoft Essentials or any others). I looked up which is best, Microsoft Security Essentials or Windows Defender on Microsoft website. They say Microsoft Security Essentials will not work on W8.1. Am I right that Windows Defender is good enough as an antivirus or should I download something different? Hope you can clear this up for me. Great column every week, really informative. Eric Aunty says: Sorry for the confusion. As you say, Microsoft Security Essentials will work on W7, and not W8 W8 does come with its own “antivirus / security” system, Defender. But sometimes, this is not actually activated, as other Antivirus systems may be installed as part of the “package”. These will be trial versions, usually to try and get you to pay for a full version. In which case, Windows Defender may not be activated. But for W8 you can use Defender, or any other compatible Anti virus system. But make sure you are using only one, as running multiple antivirus systems at the same time, will slow down your PC, as each system will be scanning your files at the same time.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin
Pink Ladies Direct object pronouns - examples entertain WELL I’M quite pleased with myself because I’ve managed to explain to my own satisfaction the meaning and use of the direct object pronoun in Spanish, which is no small task. Whether I’ve explained it to your satisfaction is quite another matter, but there again, that’s the beauty of writing for a newspaper you never actually find out what confusion you might have caused. What I promised this week was a bit of consolidation. That is, looking at what we have already talked about in some sort of context. Even this isn’t as easy as you might think because in many typical everyday sentences some other pesky things called indirect object pronouns pop up all over the place and I’m attempting to keep them out of it for the time being. Here are one or two examples anyway: Mi madre me visita cada verano - My mother visits me every summer. Te veo mañana a la misma hora ¿vale? - I’ll see you tomorrow at the same time, okay? Lo comió todo de un tirón - He (or she) ate it all in one go.
Now these three examples obey the rule we looked at before which said that we have to put the direct object pronoun in front of the verb, and after the subject if there is one, as in: Mi madre me visita … (My mother me visits …) However, there are three instances, and these are in fact very common, where the direct object pronoun appears in a different place in the sentence. Here they are, and I’m sure some with sound familiar to you, in fact one type we have looked at a bit already. The direct object pronoun can be tacked onto the end of these three forms: 1. THE GERUND (IE. – ING EQUIVALENT). Estoy comprándolo, (I am buying it), Ese hombre está mirándote (That man is looking at you) 2. THE IMPERATIVE (I.E. COMMANDS). Hazlo (Do it), espéranos (Wait for us) 3. INFINITIVES (THE BASIC FORM) Tienes que explicarlo (You have to explain it), Voy a buscaros (I’m going to look for you, I’m going to get you - plural you)

Down: 2 Amateur; 3 Kindred; 4 Picture palace; 6 Protean; 7 Disused; 8 Esteem; 13 Picking; 14 Evident; 15 Exists; 16 Instant; 17 Elegan
You may have noticed that in some of these examples we have added an accent. That is there to preserve the emphasis on the correct part of the verb and make sure it is not distorted by making the word longer. And one more important point for today: in the case gerunds (no. 1) and infinitives (no. 3) the direct object pronouns can in fact go in either place in a sentence, the difference just being a case of style and choice. So all the examples below are correct. Estoy comprándolo or Lo estoy comprando Ese hombre está mirándote or Ese hombre te está mirando. Tienes que explicarlo or Lo tienes que explicar Voy a buscaros or Os voy a buscar If you’re not really coping with this, and I imagine that some of you aren’t, I can only console you by saying that this is one of the fiddliest things we ever have to learn. If you haven’t got it, forget it for now, or just memorise one or two examples you think might be useful. See you next week – I hope!

Bell’s Palsy
Bell’s palsy is a distressing condition causing a sudden weakness in the facial muscles on one side of the face. This results in one half of the face drooping and the eye on that side not closing properly. With Bell’s palsy, the nerve that controls the facial muscles, which pass through a narrow corridor of bone on its way to the face, becomes inflamed and swollen. Besides facial muscles, the nerve affects tears, saliva, taste and a small bone in the middle of the ear. Who is at risk? Bell’s palsy can strike at any age. However, there are some people that will be more at risk: those who are pregnant, especially during the third trimester those who are in the first week after giving birth those with any upper respiratory infection those who have diabetes those with a family history of recurrent attacks Causes: Although the exact reason Bell’s palsy occurs isn’t clear, it’s often linked to exposure to a viral infection. Viruses that have been linked to Bell’s palsy include the virus that causes: Cold sores and genital herpes (herpes simplex) Chickenpox and shingles (herpes zoster) Mononucleosis (Epstein-Barr) Cytomegalovirus infections
Respiratory illnesses (adenovirus) German measles (rubella) Mumps (mumps virus) Flu (influenza B) Hand-foot-and-mouth disease (coxsackievirus) Signs and Symptoms: Sudden onset of mild weakness to total paralysis of one side of the face Facial droop causing difficulty in making facial expressions Inability to close the eye on the affected side Drooling Pain around the jaw or in or in or behind the ear on the affected side Increased sensitivity to sound on the affected side Headache A decrease in the ability to taste or experiencing ‘funny’ tastes Changes in the production of tears and saliva
of symptoms. Eye care will also be recommended. In some cases, when recovery is prolonged the patient may be referred to a physiotherapist.
When to see a doctor? When a person experiences any of these symptoms they should seek immediate medical help as stroke needs to be ruled out and the cause of paralysis ascertained. Treatment is usually in the form of steroid medication which should be started within 72 hours of the appearance
Recovery Fortunately for most, Bell’s palsy is temporary. Symptoms usually start to improve within a few weeks, with complete recovery in about six months. However, a small number of people continue to have some Bell’s palsy symptoms for life. Rarely, Bell’s palsy can recur.

Richard G Sykes, RHAD FSHAA Premier Hearing Services
How we hear THE EAR consists of three main parts and performs a vital function in receiving and interpreting sound. A Outer ear B Middle ear C Inner ear
The Outer Ear collects sound vibrations in the concha (5) and passes them along the ear canal (6). The sound vibrates the ear drum (22) which in turn moves the tiny bones (14, 10 and18) in the Middle ear. This movement transmits vibration to the cochlea (4) in the Inner Ear where they are received by fragile microscopic hair cells that covert vibration into nerve impulses for onward transmission by auditory nerve to the brain for recognition. It is very important as human beings to use our sense of hearing. Losing the sense of hearing can completely change
a person’s way of living. We should be properly educated in how to care for our sense of hearing by knowing how it works and preventing common causes of hearing loss. The ear consists of three main parts and each performs a vital function in receiving and interpreting sound and it is very important that they function together perfectly. Permanent hearing loss can occur once any of these parts
encounters a problem. For example, the hair cells in the Inner Ear are fragile and some die as a function of disease, head injury, medications, exposure to noise and age. These conditions cannot be medically or surgically corrected and the best treatment for hearing loss from damage to the hair cells or auditory nerve is, in the majority of cases, hearing aids.
If you have a concern about your hearing then call Richard G Sykes, RHAD FSHAA of Premier Hearing Services on 659 644 106 (premierhearing@hotmail.co.uk / www.premierhearingaids. es) for professional and personal advice. Horoscopes This could well be a time when the tried and tested doesn’t really work and you are left looking at alternatives that allow you to show your expertise and decisiveness. Others are waiting to see how you handle the situation, but before they have a chance to take sides; make a deal that gives everyone just all that they wholeheartedly deserve. Venus enters into Cancer later on this week and this gives you something to work towards. It is transparently clear that somebody has been barking up the wrong tree but this gives you the opportunity to play things straight down the line and will score you some brownie points into the bargain. Play safely, but do play to win, nevertheless! Saturn is in opposition to Mercury and you can bet your bottom dollar that there will be some changes to your schedule, and just when you least expect it. Happily, for once, these changes will be opportunist moments to have your say about things right now, and then you will be able to take your much needed, and deserved, slice of the pie. The entry of Mercury poses possibilities and finds you the very best way to get your message across. With communication made more open and accessible you will find that messages find the right destinations and your intentions will be better understood. Beware that there still needs to be some substantial de- cluttering of what you hold on to. Take a long and hard look at finances right now as there are some economies to me made all the way along the line. The Cosmos has directed a corner that appears comparatively shortly after the midweek lucky brush with Jupiter. For once the luck and wisdom of this planet fades fast because there is some sure restoration work to be done. Mercury is under the current influences of Gemini and this could be something that forces you to face up to a situation which doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. You are under a pressure that you have allowed to develop, but you are not guilty of doing anything other than to try to make things better all around by showing the positive angles. Spurred on by the sextile of Venus, this week brings some positive vibrations and gives you the hope that you need to have right now. The past few weeks haven’t been very easy, and you lack the friendship of someone who truly understands enough to be involved every step of the way. This may be about to change, and your luck with it too! Keep your temper this week as something may very well have taken you over the edge. It won’t help to let rip....but it might just be your safety valve under the circumstances, and therefore understandable. Blame Mars and Pluto for uniting in their energies to make you feel as if you have done something wrong, you know that you haven’t. Time is going by so very fast and there are some very positive signs that bode well for the future and your emotional needs right now. As someone who has always put others first it is inspiring to see that you are at last putting your best foot forward. Rich rewards come from achieving a balance that makes each and everybody feel special now. As Uranus crosses the Cosmos there comes a time to count your blessings, even if you really have bitten off more than you can chew this time. Others love you both for your inspiring friendship and for your caring and emotive understanding of their needs: even when you have so much on your plate that has to be dealt with right as a priority now. On your spiritual pathway the going can get very tough sometimes; however nothing happens without good reason and you need to know that you are doing the right thing. Your sensitivities are focused on making the right decisions when the time comes, but have no fear because everything is cleared to ensure you get the green light.

OFTEN I am asked pertinent questions about the Spirit World. As a frequent flyer to this domain of the Other Side I am probably very clued up on many things. As I haven’t made my one way journey as yet, and because I have the right to book a round trip, I am able to report back on a fairly reliable basis. One question, that is frequent is one, that asks who exactly is there, or going to be there in the Spirit World. I know that this question means that the questioner wants to know if they can avoid somebody...but yet too comes the need to know that a loved one has survived and will actually be there. Whatever, you have to understand the protocol of who is or isn’t there waiting for us. We know that that everyone there in Spirit has had at least one life on Earth; and with various options available, and a viable recycling programme called reincarnation, it is no guarantee that a dear departed one is there ready and waiting. Those who do reach the comfort of the Spirit World have had to show that they deserve to be there, and that they have the qualifications to enter. This will answer the question I am most frequently asked, “Will Hitler/Saddam Hussain/ Myra Hindley be there in the Spirit World?” You can add anyone else of infamy and it will always be the same answer, because basically though there is forgiveness some people abused their power on Earth and will be questioned about it for ever. We are therefore unlikely to meet the departed soul of anyone whose credentials aren’t up to par. Which leads me to answer another popular question that totally destroys the myth that anyone who decides to take their own life can’t come through because what they did was wrong. Not true, these unfortunates have only chosen to take their own life, and they have had to reason with any mistakes they
Kenny‛s Postbag
made in this process of self destruction, thereby freeing their souls to enter into the Spirit World. There is no judgment of those who have lived a caring life, and if forgiveness is needed it will be there in abundance. Residents of this great holding station of Spirit will, each of them, have been made aware of misdemeanours and had the absolute chance to choose to pass over to where comfort and safety can provide suitable shelter. One client recently asked me( and she is by no means the first) which of her three deceased husbands will she encounter on the Other Side? The reply here is that she may meet all three, if she wants to, and that no animosity, or past incident or jealousy could or should be experienced. Such is the purity of the soul of those who have made the great journey and survived in Spirit. If there was a special relationship between the three husbands then the soul energy of attraction would set a fair precedent in due process. Do not forget that heart energy is abandoned after death, and it is the surviving soul energy that accompanies the deceased; and this alone, and all that this implies. The occupants of the great Spiritual Kingdom are motivated by this higher vibration of soul energy and they may be safely referred to therefore as Soulmates. Many questions from clients have revolved around the fixtures and fittings that are to be encountered behind the Pearly Gates, up there. Now this is a question I will not answer. Not because I cannot, because I can, but it would be distressing to report back there were no crystal fountains or long trestle tables with men dressed in white robes sitting in judgment of us. For you see, the actuality of the Spirit World is conceptual, and we each have our vision of what to expect that may destroy any of our pertinent dreams. I wouldn’t want to destroy the intimate secrets of what I have actually perceived to be such a wonderful place. Self suffice, dear reader, that it will be just out of this World! That I promise you.

KENNY, I am very worried that my Father would come through if I came for an appointment wih you. After what he did to our family I could never face him again, and he is putting me off making contact with my Mother. P.D. AS A true professional I would leave it up to you if there was somebody you would rather not connect with in the Spirit World. Putting you in charge of the sitting means that you can choose not to contact anyone you wouldn’t wish to hear from. Sadly in this case, since you mention it, your Father seems to be still winning, whilst you are losing out!

Bradley Breakers BRADLEY BREAKERS are the only English speaking breakers yard in the Costa Blanca area. ESTABLISHED FOR over 10 years, they have recently relocated from Los Montesinos to Catral into much larger premises which can hold the thousands of second hand spare parts they have available for almost all vehicles from 1990. From the smallest part to a complete engine, they can find it quickly since all their stock is catalogued and available off the shelf. Everything has been fully tested prior to being sold and a warranty is offered. New stock arrives daily, so you are bound to find what you are looking for. The team speak many languages and are there to help you and offer advice and assistance where needed. Bradley Breakers are also specialists in scrapping vehicles, travelling anywhere in the Valencian area and down to Murcia. They can take the vehicle back to their premises using their grua and arrange all the paperwork to legally and correctly scrap your vehicle and pass onto you the ‘baja’, which shows the vehicle has been legally scrapped and so no longer liable for the annual SUMA bill. Even if you are missing a document, Bradley Breakers can get a duplicate for you, thus allowing everything to be done properly. They also sell second hand cars and can carry out the owner transfers as well as offering a breakdown service. Find them in Catral, take junction 730 from the AP7 head towards Catral, then turn right at the roundabout, right again and you’ll see them. Bradley Breakers are open Monday to Friday from 9am to 6pm and Saturdays 9am to 2pm. Tel: 607 848 332 WhatsApp: 619 986 934 Email: bradleybreakerscatral1@outlook.com
