Fury over voting chaos by Jack Troughton

Javea’s Arenal beach

Maximum temperatures and visitors

AS THE thermometers rise and temperatures along the Costa Blanca reach into the 30’s, the number of flights and new routes to El Altet is on the increase. Read the full story on page 7.

ANGRY EXPATS have been denied a voice in yesterday’s (Thursday) General Election despite registering in good time for a postal or proxy vote. As Britain went to the polling stations, overseas voters allowed by law to play their part at the ballot box are being urged to complain to change a flawed system. And expats campaigning for full democratic rights for all UK citizens have already branded the failures “electoral fraud” or at best “gross incompetence”. The resulting chaos will leave red faces at the Electoral Commission which ran a high profile campaign to get expats still able to vote under the 15-year rule to register. As a result numbers on the electoral registers across the 650 constituencies soared from around 7,000 registered for last year’s European elections to nearly 114,000 people wanting a say in the UK’s future. However, with figures still being collected, it appears large numbers of people have effectively been disenfranchised in the so-called mother of modern democracies. The Electoral Commission has already promised an inquest but it already appears many voting papers were sent abroad with only UK postage paid – resulting in the documents arriving late or not at all. A spokesman for the Electoral Commission said: “Our guidance to electoral administrators is clear that postal votes sent to overseas electors should be prioritised to allow the maximum time for them to be returned. CONCERN “We are aware that some overseas voters have raised concerns that they are yet to receive their postal ballot packs and we will look very carefully at the evidence shared with us when we consider what issues to raise in our statutory election report which will be laid in the UK Parliament in the summer.” Continued on page 5.

STRONG WINDS fanned a forest fire which broke out in Javea last week threatening three villas on the El Rafalet Urbanisation. Around 4,000 square metres of woodland were affected in the blaze which was brought under control by professional firefighters, volunteers of the Civil Protection service, and a helicopter dropping water. The Guardia Civil is investigating the cause of the fire which broke out at about 2pm last Thursday afternoon in the tinder dry woodland. Two homes were evacuated as a precaution. RTN reader and El Rafalet resident Martin Halliday said: “The fire started at about 2pm and engulfed the forest around three villas. The strong winds fanned the flames very quickly. “Three fire engines attended within 20 minutes and then a fire helicopter bombed the fire about 10 times with water. “I think at least one villa will be badly damaged as the flames were surrounding the property which was vacant at the time.”

Nieves Garcia and special friend

By Jack Troughton SERVING COUNCILLOR and mum-of-four Nieves Garcia has founded her own party to fight the local elections in the Marina Alta town of Benitachell. Nieves heads a list of 14 ready to contest the 24th May election as the Independientes Marina Alta Gente de Benitachell and will present a manifesto within days and hold public meetings to explain her vision for the community over the next four years. Nieves has lived in Benitachell all her life but is joined in the independent party by expats and wants her party to represent all nationalities living in the municipality. RTN was told: “Nieves is standing head of the Independientes Marina Alta, which she formed, to bring about a more sympathetic approach to consider the needs of all residents of Benitachell – whether they be Spanish, British, German, French, Dutch or any of the many nationalities that live in our community.” Venues and dates of the meetings will be circulated in Benitachell as soon as they are finalised.

The world welcomes Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana Windsor ON SATURDAY 2nd May at 8.34am Kate Middleton gave birth to her second child, Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana weighing 8ib 3oz (3.7 kg).

by Jeanette Rice CROWDS HAD been gathering outside St Mary’s hospital, in London anticipating the arrival of Kate for the birth, with some royal fans waiting patiently for as long as two weeks. Pensioner Terry Hut, 79, was camped out on a bench outside the Lindo Wing with Margaret Tyler, 71, who has one of the world’s largest collections of royal memorabilia for two weeks and when baby

George was born he had spent 12 days camping outside in anticipation of the birth. News coverage throughout the world congratulated the royal couple on the birth of their second child. Princess Charlotte is now fourth in line for the throne, pushing Prince Harry back into fifth position, amidst much speculation that Kate and William are planning to have two more children. Prince William was present for the whole event as Kate, without an epidural, gave birth just two and a half hours after arriving at the hospital. Bookmakers had been eagerly waiting on the confirmation of the chosen names with Charlotte being one of the favourites, and Elizabeth and Diana honouring the Queen and Prince William’s late mother. Whilst the royal gun salutes were fired at the Tower of London and Hyde park the new royal family of four were said to be settled at Kensington Palace, although plans for them to return to their home in Anmer Hall in Norfolk had been made.

Continued from front page ON THE Costa Blanca, Arlene Colwell and her husband had not received their papers on Wednesday. Arlene told RTN: “We are very angry. If this is intentional on the part of the UK then if is effectively election fraud. If it is sheer incompetence, then it is a disgrace – we have effectively been disenfranchised.” Yvonne Carvath received her papers late on Tuesday (5th May) too late to return them by the end of polling. Husband David is still waiting for his. “So effectively, both Dave and I have not been able to vote at this critical time,” she said. “Our vote has been excluded for this election through no fault of our own and we are not happy about it!” She said the elections office at Salford City Council blamed the Post Office but it was clear when sending papers to people abroad more time had to be allowed. “We are all being urged to vote. Is it any wonder that people become disillusioned and don’t bother when the procedures prevent that happening in spite of their best efforts,” said Yvonne. Margaret and Gerald Hales chose to have a proxy vote in key marginal Warrington South. They expected the papers to be with their proxy – their son – in good time. When the papers failed to arrive they made inquiries of the electoral office. They received letters promising all would be well...but still have no voting papers! FRAUD Margaret, a campaigner for all British citizens to be able to vote without time limit, complained how Electoral Registration Officers in different constituencies remained almost independent and chose when to send out the voting papers. “We need to ditch that! Parliament needs to require that postal votes go out first by law – if they don’t the issue becomes an electoral fraud. “And rather than just tinkering around the edges, there needs to be a whole new way of voting – it is about time it advances from making a cross with a pencil on a piece of paper. This is the 21st Century... we do everything else electronically.” Margaret, who was interviewed by the BBC about voting last month, said people had opted to register in a system “that cannot cope and will not work” and been given “false hopes” about taking part in the election. She added: “I am furious and sickened and saddened, all at the same time.” And fellow campaigner Brian Cave, who lives in France, said there was evidence that large numbers of ‘citizens abroad’ – an official term used rather than expats – had not received ballot papers and were disenfranchised. “The Electoral Registration Officers in various constituencies have not sent the papers in time so they can be returned in good time before 7th May. This is electoral fraud if knowingly done, and gross incompetence if not!” People unable to vote are urged to complain to the Electoral Commission stating the name of the failing constituency and circumstances to MPhillips@electoralcommission.org.uk and also copy in Brian at lefourquet@gmail.com to help him compile his own dossier. Licence to thrill by Jack Troughton

MEMBERS OF seven different Church of England congregations came together on the Costa Blanca on May Day to celebrate two key members of the Anglican Chaplaincy being licensed into new roles. La Ermita San Josep in La Fustera, Benissa, became ‘standing room only’ as 147 people and invited guests witnessed an emotional ceremony taken by the Archdeacon of Gibraltar, the Venerable Geoffrey Johnston, representing the Bishop of Europe. Father Marcus Ronchetti was ‘sworn in’ as Senior Chaplain of the Costa Blanca Anglican Chaplaincy and Father Ray Andrew officially joined the team from a South London parish. And taking the helm, Father Marcus aims to grow and strengthen the church, committing the chaplaincy to working inside the Costa Blanca community. Pictured at the Ermita following a communion service are (from left) Father Marcus, Archdeacon Geoffrey Johnston, and Father Ray. The chaplaincy serves a community from Valencia to Alicante with Sunday services held in seven different towns on the coast. Personal delivery

BENIDORM’S PLEA to be declared an official tourist town was personally delivered to the Spanish parliament by Rafa Gasent, leader of the town’s Ciudadanos (citizens) Party. Accompanied by a dozen supporters also mounted on motorbikes, Rafa rode his Vespa 500km to the capital averaging 70 kilometres an hour. The politician recreated the epic ride of former Benidorm Mayor Pedro Zaragoza who mounted his own scooter to make a personal appeal to General Franco to allow bikinis to be worn on the resort’s beaches. Mr Gasent is appealing for a change in the law to declare Benidorm an official tourist destination and allow extra funding for the town hall to cater for the millions of visitors arriving each year – said to be worth around 1 million Euros. He said it was an “injustice” that the resort’s status was not changed and despite successive governments being urged to take action over the years, nothing had been done.

May Day celebrations...

Stars and stripes

HOT DOGS, chilli dogs, fired onions and sweet mustard put the United States of America firmly on the map at the May Day Fair run by the Costa Blanca Anglican Chaplaincy. Food and drink played a central role at the L’Ermita San Josep at La Fustera in Benissa with stalls offering a taste of England, Scotland, Wales, and the US of A. The afternoon party went with a swing - and raised more than 2,000€ for the chaplaincy to help the self-financing body to continue its valuable work in the community along Spain’s east coast. Pictured are the volunteers of the colourful ‘stars and bars’ stall offering come of the treats on the menu.

AS THE thermometers rise and temperatures along the Southern Costa Blanca reach into the 30’s, the number of flights and new routs to El Altet is on the increase. Airport Director Santiago Martínez-Cava noted that; “The Alicante Airport will expand its air links with much of the continent for the summer season, in addition to doubling the frequencies in Moscow,” he announced in a meeting with representatives of Tourism Costa Blanca, hoteliers and other tourism business professionals, this week. In addition, growth will continue at the airport with new flight deals to now include Vienna (Austria), Budapest (Hungary), Warsaw (Poland), Carcassonne (France), Leeds (UK), Turin and Venice (Italy), Gdansk (Germany) and Antwerp (Belgium). Nationaly, the Alicante terminal also added a link to Asturias and the Russian airline S7, announced that it will double its flight frequencies between El Altet and Moscow. Alicante President, Luisa Pastor, emphasized that this reinforcement of air traffic with the emerging Russian market is helping to guarantee; “the potential

for tourism on the Costa Blanca is tripled.” A new agreement has been signed with the company Jet2.com, to use their base of operations from Leeds (UK) starting in July. While the full facilities at El Altet have yet to be fully utilised and two terminals lie unused, this week’s meeting at ‘Routes Europe’ saw the full participation of Alicante, strengthening their ties with new and traditional companies and working with various airlines and promoting new routes, especially the French, Polish and Eastern Europe. This week alone, the Airport added 885 flight movements (departures and arrivals) through to Sunday. The busiest day is Saturday, with 236 flights and 35,178 seats offered. Another symptom of the tourist boom in Alicante is with the Cruise trade, with three ships this week attracting a total of 5,259 people on board, including passengers and crew. While not a huge number of passengers, it’s a market that the Alicante Port operators hope to grow for 2016 by offering special rates for Cruise Companies for their berthing facilities.

El Altet offerings expand for the summer

ON LABOUR Day, May 1st, PSOE mayoral candidate Angel Saez, met with the 13 workers who were dismissed fro their positions at Torrevieja’s Salt Works. The jobs lost were from a subcontractor of the lessee Salinas. Saez wanted the workers to know that the PSOE were showing their support for the former employees and called for an upcoming rally outside the City Hall in solidarity with the workers. The following day, No.3 candidate for the Alternativa Popular de Torrevieja (APTCe), Jose Manuel Martinez Andreu, met with the dismissed workers, who claim they were expelled from the industrial area by private security officers. The workers were not allowed to enter the site and handed dismissal letters; “without any notice” and “with a ban on re-entering the salinas”, in what the workers said was a “humiliating” situation. Andreu Martinez promised that if they have a place of power that they intend to meet with the Directorate General as the Salinas “is an active part of the lease agreement and can perform through collaboration and control.”

Leah (left) and Molly

Coming of age in Spain by Jack Troughton

BRITISH TEENAGERS Molly Mathews and Leah Munson were magically transformed into ‘festeras’ last weekend for Benitachell’s Festival of the Rose. Their hair was put up in a classical Spanish style and they wore the colourful silk and lace of the ‘traje regional de Valenciana’, the traditional costume. The two 17-year-olds joined another 10 girls and nine boys for three days of processions and parades around the village accompanied by the town band. Molly told RTN: “Every day the boys pick up the girls – they come around to the door, which is decorated with flowers - it is a different partner each time and on one day the girls pick up the

boys from their homes.” As a ‘coming of age’ ceremony, the girls will celebrate their 18th birthday this year and their escorts will turn 21. Molly, a student heading for university, and Leah, a trainee hairdresser, were invited to take part by friends they met at school and they have spent 12 months raising money for the festival – they will also take part in the Fiestas de la Magdalena in July. During this year’s calendar of festivals, the girls and boys scheduled to be honoured in 2016 will be busy raising money by running bars, organising food, bands, selling lottery tickets and bull running. “It’s quite a lot of

responsibility”. Getting ready for the procession is no easy task. It took hours to get ready each day helped by a team of volunteers. Leah works at Justin’s Salon in Moraira and Sarah helped by Beth did their hair while Holly applied the makeup. Amid the chaos at home with proud member of the family, boyfriends, siblings and a reporter, the transformation was complete. Leah said: “It’s taken around three hours to get ready but it’s great fun!” And Molly added: “The dresses are really heavy and the hair is very tight and uncomfortable – it makes you feel really hot – but it’s worth it.”

ANIMAL CHARITY AKIRA staged a successful May Day celebration and stepped closer to the final 25,000€ needed to build its rescue shelter in Benissa. Sales at the charity shop in Moraira, a spot of crowd funding, and the annual sunshine fete at Font Santa have helped a dedicated team of volunteers seen their dream approach reality. AKIRA’s Pauline Curtis told RTN how the crowd funding had seen animal lovers donate over 1,600€ to the cause in just 10 days – people “we don’t know”, who were keen to aid the plight of abandoned dogs and cats. She added: “Once we start building the shelter we know we will be getting more donations of money – people are so sympathetic. “At the moment we have 47 dogs we have rescued and no shelter so that costs us a lot of money but everyone is working hard and confident we will succeed.” The AKIRA Charity Shop is about to move to new larger premises – two doors away from the current site in Avenida del Portet. “It is more than twice the size of the current shop,” said Pauline. “the shop has been a tremendous success but we have outgrown it – it’s been really good to AKIRA because people have been so generous with donations...but there’s no room. “The new shop will cost us more in rent but we will be able to display more, get more people in, and we will raise more money.” Pauline (rear) with volunteer Maggie

Municipalities with fewer than 5,000 inhabitants are unique by Keith Nicol PARTIDO POPULAR’S Alicante Campaign spokesman Joaquín Albaladejo said yesterday, Thursday, that “in the Province of Alicante, the PP support and defend the uniqueness and identity of municipalities with fewer than 5,000 inhabitants.” Thus, the PP is backing the region’s smaller towns and villages and standing against the Ciudadanos en Alicante and their proposal to remove these municipalities and pool them together to make up municipalities of at least 20,000 inhabitants. “The proposal of the candidate Punset of Ciudadanos, regarding the merger of municipalities, affect almost 60% of municipalities in the province of Alicante; 83 of the 141, “ that make up the province, said Albaladejo. Albaladejo noted that to wipe out the smaller municipalities, would wipe out many different promotional platforms of municipalities in the province. “This is something that tourism, for example, would mean irrecoverable harm to many communities, for dozens of companies and thousands of jobs, “said Albaladejo. “When you talk about a topic, on should do it properly and with knowledge of things one is talking about. And I think Punset know the substance and form of the Councils. I invited her to sit down with me, anytime she wants and explain the chaos that such an idea

Joaquín Albaladejo defends the rights of Alicante’s 83 smaller municipalities

would generate with the disappearance at provincial level of the Delegation of Alicante, “he added. “If there’s Council as the backbone of the whole Province, for example, the economic heart of the province, which is tourism, would lose the most important

promotion platform. This platform has enabled more than 75% of the municipalities in the province become known nationally and internationally. Simply, with this argument is disqualified as a candidate of a formation that, we know, has political theories of the Left, “he said.

Chinese Tourism Board criticised for animal cruelty after pushing pigs off bridge A CHINESE tourism board has made pigs fly. The animals, each with a bright number painted on its side, were herded onto a ramshackle bridge overhanging Shiyan Lake in the popular tourist province of Changsha and pushed off. Online users have been upset by the “cruel” stunt, organised by Shi Huang as part of local May Day celebrations, with many criticising the event after photos were published on state broadcaster CCTV’s Facebook page. “They look like they were pushed not jumping through choice. Cruel,” wrote Hayley McDonough. Another user, Kay Khine S L, wrote: “This is animal abuse!” Jo Metcalfe added: “This is beyond sick. What did these sentient beings do, to deserve such punishment”? Mr Huang, who plans to make the event weekly despite reports that the local tourism board received complaints, claims the piglets are “carefully trained” to perform the “special stunt”. He continued: “They get well rewarded with food and once they get over their nerves they clearly enjoyed it. Anybody who says it is cruel is clearly not well informed that pigs like water,”

Cop accidentally shoots mother at wedding

A KENTUCKY police officer has been put on administrative leave after accidentally shooting his own mother at a wedding. McCracken County Detective Cory Golightly, 32, was adjusting his jacket when the weapon fell and discharged through the holster as it hit the ground at the weekend. His mother, who has not been named, Is in a stable condition in hospital. McCracken County Sheriff Jon Hayden said the weapon, a .38 calibre revolver, was not one issued by the department. Mr Golightly and his mother were guests at Saturday’s ceremony at Bardwell Baptist Church in Carlisle County. Jeanine King, who was playing piano at the service, stated it was “so scary and terrifying. My initial reaction was, Oh my goodness. Could that possibly be a gun?. Then my next thought was, Gosh, who’s in the church with a gun?”.She then found Mr Golightly in the foyer telling his mother to breathe and be calm.

Unhappy partners THE GLOVES are apparently off in the run in to the 24th May local elections in Javea as partners in the town hall’s governing alliance fall out over the credit for establishing the well-used ‘Help Desk’ for foreign residents. by Jack Troughton The spat is over who created this valuable service – a PSOE source maintaining Xabia Democratica leader Oscar Anton was trying to steal the glory. And despite promises from PSOE Mayor Jose Chulvi that he would run a campaign free of mudslinging, articles in Wednesday’s Spanish press – quoting a party “Source” suggest otherwise, accusing XD election leaflets of a false claim they opened the Help Desk “with their own funds”. The socialist party’s source maintains the cost of the “municipal service” of Help Desk service falls squarely on the town hall – and accuses Mr Anton of trying to score electoral points and “ignoring” the “existence” of Mayor Chulvi in the pact. Yet Mr Anton’s party XD, which has formed a preelection pact with Ciudadanos por Javea – another of the ruling alliance parties - with the slogan ‘The Best Is Yet To Come’, has replied to the articles and subsequent social media contretemps and main-

tains it really does foot the bill. XD maintains its rivals are attempting to “hoodwink” the Javea electorate. It underlines that all political parties in government receive money to provide “administrative and political party assistance”. These allow “party” rather than “town hall” appointments and XD has a full time and one part time worker under this system. The party says Mr Anton took the “bold” decision to use its allocation to run the Help Desk, the councillor himself stepping in to help provide holiday and sickness cover. He told RTN: “I have faith that the good sense of the people of Javea will win out I the end. I am very Anton anxious not to have a war with the mayor, who I (right) have worked with for the last four years. working “But I think XD has been accused of misleading at the the public by his supporters and executives of the Help PSOE, so I am bound to put the record straight.” Desk

Tax discs and the new rules

Hi, My wife and I own a house in Albaida, Valencia (Just north of Alcoy) and I was stopped by the Police Local requesting me to produce my road tax disc. The car is UK registered and is new. I have no tax disc because it has been abolished in the UK. No more paper discs only compuerised information is now held at Swansea, Wales. The Officer demanded to see the tax disc. I tried to explain the change to the uk system. The Officer then said we could only keep our car with the British registration number for one month in Spain and after that time I had to get Spanish matriculation plates. WE have been coming to Spain with our UK car for over 11 years and never had a problem. Can someone advise us of the law about this situation. We are only in Spain for 4 to 5 mMonths and we do not have residencia in Spain. Thanks. Daniel

Dishonest customers

MY YOUNGEST daughter has just moved to Spain and started waitressing on the Costa Orihuela. She took the order for a couple of British customers, in their 50s or 60s, who were then served by another waitress. They had drinks and food to the value of 17€. For some reason the bill was not given to them which, I understand, should have been done by the bar staff. The couple left without paying and my daughter had 17€ deducted from her pay. This represents 3 hours of hard graft. I think this is appalling. The couple probably attend this complex on a regular basis and should be honest. Don’t they realise that the money comes out of the pockets of their underpaid waiters and waitresses? She was upset and in tears. It has put her off working in Spain. C.L.Naylor Punta Marina

Forum on the Impact Tower of Roman power of Sport Tourism by Jack Troughton SYMPATHETIC RESTORATION of the historic tower ‘Torre de Sant Josep’ at Villajoyosa was completed on Wednesday after its 83,000€ facelift. The construction of the funeral tower dates back to the 2nd Century AD and was a symbol of the Roman Empire’s hold over the Iberian Peninsula. Specialist workmen were brought in to add ancient skills to the restoration and to preserve a building seen as one of the best surviving monuments of the period – experts say the tower is actually best viewed from the sea, reflecting the power of the Roman navy and its trade routes along the Mediterranean.

SPORT TOURISM is a major part of Torrevieja’s tourism future. Last week, a forum organized by Spanish Newspaper El Mundo was held in Real Club Nautico of Torrevieja (RCNT called “The Impact of Popular Sports in Tourism”. Forum speakers included Pedro Delgado, a former professional cyclist and commentator for TVE; Germán Robles, president of the Foundation of Atletico Madrid; Fernando de Portugal, responsible for the company Last Lap organizer of the San Silvestre Vallecana, and José Miguel Pina, director general of the company Mondraker bikes. Torrevieja Mayor Eduardo Dolon, stressed the importance of sports tourism to the city of Torrevieja and their special sports promotion unit which in just two years has attended more than 16,000 athletes from different European countries. Eduardo Dolon noted that Torrevieja has one of the best and most complete sports cities in Spain, with the majority of facilities all within walking distance of each other. He added that sports were not just important for visiting athletes but without doubt it one of the most important activities in improving the quality of life of its citizens. The Mayor thanked Pedro Delgado for his assistance in this forum, and noted that Pedro was one of the most success-

ful Spanish athletes. Pedro Delgado said that it is very important for Torrevieja to be present at the 2015 edition of the Tour of Spain, because as a tourist level, it is a great showcase for the city worldwide. Torrevieja will be the star as the starting point of the ninth stage of the Tour of Spain on August 30th, after being the day before in Murcia, and then moving from Torrevieja towards the streets to the Cumbre

del Sol, in the municipality of Benitaxell on the Costa Blanca North. August 30th will be a historic day marked with a great atmosphere, as during these days the city still will still have hundreds of thousands of tourists and visitors who are in Torrevieja to spend their summer holidays. The stage will be the only one of the Tour 2015 that runs through Alicante province and will promote the entire region to the entire world.

Networking Event for women

by Jack Troughton

INSPIRED BY punks, poets, the female form, and flamenco, talented artist and art teacher Julia Evans embarks on a solo exhibition in Pedregeur this month. The show, featuring 30 of her paintings, opens tonight (Friday 8th May) at the Casal Cultural Jaume I in Pedregeur and runs until 26th June. It is an opportunity to see the wide range of Julia’s work. Based in Benidoleig, she is perhaps best known for running the ArtHouse – and inspiring others to take up art – but has been honoured with an invitation to exhibit her pictures. She is able to demonstrate a wide range of styles. Pictures include some of her ‘goddess’ series, a homage to the female form, popular flamenco scenes, and a touch of rock ‘n’ roll – meet Johnny Rotten, Keith Richards, and Joey Ramone. Julia told RTN: “Music sells!” And throughout the opening night, atmosphere will be added with live music from Argentinean musician Fernando Gotan. Julia said she had “focussed” on the ArtHouse project since 2008 “now I want to focus more on my own work and my own exhibitions. I hope to have shows in Madrid and the UK next year.” A highly skilled painter, she admitted: “Art is my life; I am a bit obsessive and love my work. Painting is like air to me – I can’t exist without it, I love it, I live it...I literally breathe it!”

‘Keef’ Richards

PORTRAIT She said the bulk of the show was based on portraits varying from famous faces to people who had inspired her or in some way affected society. “I like to bring across feelings and emotions – and strangely I have to like my subjects and then they just fly off the brush,” she added. “The exhibition is quite a variety of different styles and images and a taste of the different work I do.” Born in London in 1982, Julia grew up in Brighton but returned to the capital

to study art and design at the Camberwell School of Art, continuing her studies at Brighton School of Art, majoring in Fine art. She exhibited in both Brighton and London before moving to Spain in 2007, opening ArtHouse a year later, holding regular exhibitions of her students’ work. The exhibition is open Monday to Friday 7pm until 9pm. Julia can be contacted on 96 640 4643 or 603 708 935, email arthousemail@gmail.com and visit www.juliaevansartist.com for more information.

Cancer charity offers support GROWING CANCER charity Bruised but not Broken hopes it will become a haven for people needing support on the northern Costa Blanca. by Jack Troughton Its successful shop in El Campello was successfully opened last December and remains a necessary money spinner as it becomes popular with local expats and the Spanish community. Founded in 2012, the charity was launched by Lorraine Brown to honour the life of her daughter Rebecca Isaacs, who died in 2010 aged 32 after a four year battle with bowel cancer. The prime aim of Bruised but not Broken was to provide respite for people caring for family and friends suffering from the disease. However, its remit is expanding and Lorraine hopes people affected by cancer can pop into the shop as a “drop in” centre to talk. “The charity is working well in one aspect – we are raising lots of money,” Lorraine told RTN. “The way it is not working so well is through ‘unawareness’ – people don’t realise what we do and we have all this money in the bank and I cannot spend it quickly enough.” She said when people thought of cancer charities they thought of expat organisations like MABS – but Bruised but not Broken was already helping with the loan of medical equipment and financial support in the area. “We support people in need.”

Lorraine said: “With cancer, families and friends just don’t realise how important it is to talk, everyone bottles it up – all my ladies who have the illness are always worried about their husbands because they will not talk about it.” WELCOME She said “absolutely everyone” walking through the shop door was made welcome – they could browse, or sit and have a cup of coffee and, if needed, there was a private area to discuss problems. “I cannot stress enough just how important it is to talk about cancer. It is going to affect one in two of us now.” The shop is open Monday to Friday between 10am and 5pm and on Saturday between 10am and 2pm. A group meeting is now held on the first Tuesday of the month between 2pm and 4pm to offer advice and share experiences and frustrations. The shop will always welcome any form of donations from furniture to clothes and bric-a-brac to continue the charity’s mission. And Lorraine would like to recruit more volunteers, to boost

Lorraine (right) with volunteer Anna

the shop team numbers but also to help the charity’s expansion – people with listening skills, former nurses, fund raisers, and people with marketing experience “to promote the charity.” The charity shop and drop-in centre is at Calle San Bartolome 55, El Campello. People can call Lorraine on 608 524 896 or also call 96 562 6036, email tealeye@hotmail.co.uk, or visit www.facebook.com/bruisedbutnotbroken

Rock Against Cancer

21

THIS SUNDAY’S ‘Rock Against Cancer’ event, is a fabulous opportunity to support one of Torrevieja’s most worthy causes, the AECC. by Keith Nicol The street party takes place at the lower end of Calle Apollo outside of Monroe’s Music Pub, with the first band on stage at 4pm. Organised by Monroe’s Neil Wyatt, who is also celebrating his birthday this week, more than a dozen bands and entertainers are offering their services for free in an effort to raise as much money as possible for Cancer support and testing. ‘Rock Against Cancer’ is a charity rock concert featuring some of the best bands on the “Costa Blanca”: Magnetik Surf, Deja Vu, Black Thunder (ACDC tribute band), Los Duques, Rebel Fires, Kolted, and as a special guest, the well known guitar player Santiago Campillo (founder of the band M Clan). ‘Rock Against Cancer’ is completely free to attend with all money raised going directly to the AECC, whose head office is less than a stones throw away from the front door of Monroe’s Music Pub, which is located at Calle Apolo 12, Torrevieja. Fundraising is being done solely through donations at the AECC stand, buying themed T-shirts for the unbeatable price of only five Euros as these have been sponsored by Scansat, guitar plectrums, pin badges, drinks, food, and raffle tickets. Music under the sun and stars will take place from 4.00pm until 10.00pm after which the action moves inside the pub with the fun continuing until the early hours. Everyone is invited to attend with special face painting and other activities for the kids, while outside there will be food served, drinks poured, raffle tickets sold and lots of dancing to the sound of some of the regions best bands

and musicians. Munroe’s Music Pub owner Neil Wyatt remarked; “This is the biggest event in Torrevieja this year, with the biggest bands on the Costa Blanca, and for the best cause. T-shirts are just five euros: Plectrums are one euro each or three for two euros and badges only 50 cents. Come on down and support a great cause.” There are some great raffle prizes including a brand new guitar supplied by Fender, especially for the event, two more guitars from Compas of Elche and Alternativas of Murcia, plus Munroe’s merchandising and lots of musical and fun items. Neil added; “Thanks to all the collaborators. This charity event wouldn’t have been possible without your help. This concert is organised by the AECC and the Organising Committee of Monroe’s Music Pub. This great concert is for the Spanish Association Against Cancer. We are counting on you. Don’t miss it.”

Time to improve container displays

by

Dick Handscombe Holistic gardener and author

AS LATE spring and summer approaches and more time is spent outside in gardens or on apartment terraces now is a good time to improve containers of plants. THERE ARE six essential tasks; cleaning the outside of containers and their drip trays, replacing dead or dying plants, improving planting mediums, pruning existing plants, cleaning leaves and pest prevention. CLEANING CONTAINERS AND TRAYS Clean with a jet or sponge of soapy water and then rinse clean. Recognise that glazed pots are easier to clean than terracotta pots which can be ingrained with green moulds especially in shady situations. REPLACING PLANTS If plants are dying or look very poorly because of insect or fungal attacks during the past year it is wise in most cases to replace them. If you have had problems with the same varieties of plants previously change to a different type of plant. IMPROVING PLANTING MEDIUMS Plants in containers can in time use up all the available nutrients in the soil organic matter based composts. Three solutions are possible. Feed plants every month or two with a liquid or granular feed, change the top few centimetres of compost each year and top up to the original depth to

counteract any compost shrinkage or repot growing plants in new compost every two or three years. PRUNING EXISTING PLANTS Prune to shape and size appropriate to their intended display situation. CLEANING LEAVES The leaves of evergreen plants are worth washing with a hand sprayer or small sponge each spring. If leaves are very grimy add a few drops of potassium soap or an eco washing up liquid to the water. PEST PREVENTION The first thing is not to over water or feed plants as this can stimulate fast weak growty vulnerable to insect and fungal attacks. Secondly one can stick insecticide impregnated plastic insect deterrents alongside plants. Fortunately some brands like Neudorff are ecological. Thirdly it helps to plant one or two garlic segments alongside geranium and rose plants. Lastly if you are pestered by snails or slugs place a few slug pellets on the surface of tge soil of each pot and if you

have groups of containers dust a few granules between the containers where snails can rest in the cool damp shade. Having given containers a spring clean reconsider how you group containers and consider adding more to make displays most pleasing. The book ‘Apartment Gardening – Mediterranean style’ was originally to be titled ‘Attractive and productive terraces and balconies’. It includes much about container gardening of interest to garden gardeners as well. It is now most easily obtained via Amazon and other major internet bookshops.

SHOPPING FOR new investments tends to be a much more appealing activity than carrying out a thorough overhaul of your old ones. Many ex-pats have investments that they have not reviewed for years and with the right advice could be yielding much better returns utilising tax saving vehicles to enhance the benefits. It’s all too tempting to skip straight to investing, people are enticed by dreams of the potential riches on offer instead of taking a proper step-by-step approach to reviewing their investments. One of the most common traps people fall in to is listening to friends at the Bar – and I don’t mean the law society. It appears the more they drink, the more they know. Hey, I’m not tee-total! People’s attention gets gripped by the latest fad, whether Rolls Royce have produced an engine that runs on hot air, or after genetic modification of a cabbage the entire third world can be fed from the production of an allotment hoed by Roy Cropper. A more sensible approach is to focus on one’s overall holdings and what they are trying to achieve with them. You should carry out a full health check on your investments every 6 months and we certainly review our clients’ portfolios and make adjustments if necessary, normally in anticipation of new trends. So what is the best way to review your portfolio? Start the process by thinking about why you began

investing and whether your goals and timetable remain the same. Many people invest for more than one reason at a time but over time, one or more aspects of your personal circumstances might have changed, such as receiving an inheritance or losing a partner. NEW TO INVESTING? Most people have money languishing in UK and Spanish banks earning not enough to keep up with inflation, receiving interest that is taxed at source when our most cautious of clients are earning at least around the 4% to 5% mark in a tax efficient way . Some take an annual 5% Income paid monthly, some let it grow. You can decide.

Spanish Power of Attorney in Spain: Incapacity process in Spain HOW TO make sure that your assets will be administrated correctly if you lose capacity. WE QUITE often receive consultations from older clients worried about what would happen to their assets should they lose capacity, how would their relatives or friends be able to deal with the Spanish property? Would they be allowed to sell in order to pay for a home or residency? etc. In Spain, it is possible to grant a Power of Attorney (POA), allowing any person that you want, to be able to deal with your affairs in case of incapacity. In fact, you can choose to grant a POA to be valid from day one, or a POA to be valid (come into effect) only if you lose capacity or a POA to be valid only while you are capable, therefore you can chose the best way according to your individual circumstances.

As stated in previous articles, the Spanish Power of Attorney could be revoked at any time, and always ceases to have effect once the grantor or donor of the POA passes away, it cannot be used any more, as the Spanish Power of Attorneys dies with him. So, as said before, we remind all readers, especially the expat community in Spain, of any age, to review their affairs in Spain, to check that they have in place all the documents regarding their property, accounts, investments, so in case that something happens to them, their relatives, friends and heirs will be able to deal with them. Also, we recommend in some cases, to sign a Spanish POA ( according to the circumstances of each person), as

it is a quick and cheap way to make sure that the person that you chose will be able to administrate your assets if you cannot do so. We would like to remind you, that if you become incapable in Spain, an incapacity process should be started,

but having a proper POA will simplify things, and will allow the person/s you chose to administrate your assets from day one, etc. If you need any information about this subject please contact us.

Shaun to the finish MARATHON MAN Shaun Howlett was carried the last five miles of a gruelling London Marathon by the cheers of the crowds and the red, white and blue of Union Jacks. by Jack Troughton Completing the 26 miles and 385 yards in a respectable 4 hours 2 minutes and 11 seconds, he also raised £3,800 for UK charity Scope, which helps disabled people integrate into society by providing opportunities and giving them independence. “It was absolutely excellent,” he told RTN on his return to Javea. “I didn’t realise you could actually smile for 90% of a marathon – the last five miles were really hard. “I finished just outside my target of four hours but it just got the better of me at the end – but the people in the crowd get you through it – they are cheering and singing; it was a feeling I have never experienced before. “The last five miles were a struggle but you can tell you are coming to the end and the atmosphere just picks you up again. It was a massive buzz.” He added: “All of a sudden you can see Big Ben and Buckingham Palace and you think ‘I’m nearly there!’ There were Union Jacks flying and it makes you proud to be British.” Shaun said the crowds were eight deep around the course – a record 37,000 people took part in the marathon – and there were some 750,000 spectators. FUND RAISING Benitachell gym Motive8 and its neighbour Enhance Health and Beauty staged a fund raising day for Shaun at the end of March and chipped in with £1,700 of the total. Across the finish line, Shaun received his medal and a series of goody bags before being reunited with his family. Together they went to the Scope area to meet the charity’s other runners and swap stories. “It was just a great day from getting up at 6am and getting home at 5pm before we went to the pub – 25 of us all went out to celebrate.” And Shaun said even a couple of days later – before returning to Spain – he was wearing his ‘I finished the London Marathon’ and people were still coming up to congratulate him and drivers were sounding their horns. “I am absolutely over the moon about how much we raised – I cannot believe how many people backed us,” he said. Shaun is determined to run the marathon again but may wait a couple of years – although he does already miss the four days a week training schedule. “Literally the day after the marathon, the ballot opens for next year’s race...it’s a day when you don’t feel like applying but I will absolutely do it again!”

‘MS Braemar’ in Alicante

THE CRUISE vessel Braemer from the company Fred. Olsen Cruise Line arrived at the Port of Alicante at 11.30 am last 24th of April. The ship arrived with about 800 passengers and 370 crew members. Most passengers were of British nationality. Beniconnect, as a “preferred partner”of Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, had the pleasure of inviting along to this event presidents, vice presidents from some officially registered clubs and associations on the Costa Blanca as well as professionals within the tourist industry. Our visited commenced with a wonderful lunch invitation on board the ship in the Thistle Restaurant. This was followed with by guided tour of the ship by Fred.Olsen hospitality staff. We viewed numerous cabins of various types, public areas, spa, hairdressers as well as enjoying the views on the magnificent deck areas by the swimming pools.

Fred. Olsen cruises are different, hundreds of people repeat these amazing “experiences” time and time again. WHY? Their service is different. It is a traditional British cruising with English speaking crew and sterling currency on board. They visit over 200 destinations with cruises of all durations, and you can enjoy on board a fantastic cuisine and great entertainment. Fred.Olsen ships can sail to smaller ports that bigger ships cannot reach, offering you more time ashore. As their ships are smaller, the atmosphere on board is more sociable, and guests are remembered by the name. This is a family run business the same as Beniconnect, therefore there is a difference, customer service is priority and far superior to the larger companies where perhaps that extra special touch is sometimes missing.

Life Coach

WITH A background in family and matrimonial mediation, Life Coach Sara Bell helps Readers with their daily worries. If you are having difficulties with relationships, family, work or any other aspect of your life, then help is at hand.

I hate Mum’s boyfriend

I can‘t stand my Mum’s new boyfriend. My Dad died four years ago, and I helped my Mum through it. She has relied on me ever since. I worry that she is making a mistake with this new Guy, and now she says he is moving in. I am 18 soon and have always wanted to join the armed forces, but wonder whether I should leave. You are naturally worried about your Mum, and you’ve done a great job in looking after her. It would have been very tough on you both when you lost your Dad, but your Mum is entitled to have friends. I would suggest you concentrate on yourself now, and look to the future. Bide your time at home, until you are able to leave. A couple of years living away and travelling the world will be good for you, and help you gain perspective. Sometimes in life we have to endure other people’s relationships, even if we think they could do better.

What future do I have? I am 23, and my parents brought me over to Spain when I was 14. I never settled in at Spanish school, and struggled with learning the language in particular. The only work I can get is food prep at a local restaurant. It’s not even full time as the job is seasonal, and I get laid off in the winter. I enjoy the job but the pay is poor, and I fear I will never be able to leave home and get my own place. I worry that I have no future. I am very down. The first thing you should do is enrol at College, and learn Spanish. People who are fluent, have a massive advantage over others in this regard. This will open doors for you. Also, if you enjoy the restaurant industry, why not look to taking a course on catering and hospitality? If you don’t make any strides towards changing the outlook, you will stay in dead end jobs, and never have the opportunity to leave home. Your future is in your hands. Good luck! Write to Sara in confidence. A pseudonym will be used if you wish. Sara reads all letters and can give a personal reply. Las Vegas, Nevada

FOR THOSE who have yet to visit this colourful city – what are you waiting for? IT´S RANKED 3rd in places to visit in the USA, often combined with a stay in Los Angeles or as part of a tour of the West Coast of the USA. Originally given city status in 1910, the boundaries of this town have grown so much that the original, and famous ‘Welcome to Fabulous Los Angeles’ sign was originally over 4km from the last building, and now is less than 0.5km! Whilst efforts have been made by various top name hotels to entice the family market, by way of holiday theme parks, these endeavours have invariably lacked interest and closed along the way, leaving Vegas most famous for it’s gambling and hotel area, known as The Strip. Consisting of over 4 miles of glittering towers of hotels, casinos, big name concerts and top entertainment shows, even the most committed of travellers would be hard put to get through this lot in a short time! Not to worry, you can take your time and see it all. The hotels in Vegas are quite simply stunning, with 15 of the 25 largest hotels in the world all located in this area. Top end hotels are the Bellagio and the Venetian, which have resulted in many of the older hotels also investing in refurbishment. A win-win if you are a guest at any of these hotels. There are plenty of medium range hotels to stay at also (if your pocket money doesn´t quite reach the prices of the Bellagio, or if you prefer to keep your pennies for the one-armed bandits!). Hotels such as the Flamingo offer plenty for your dollar and still keeping you in the central location. So what to do in Vegas? Well the pretty obvious answer is the Casinos. Its hard to turn around without being in front of yet another way to lose your inheritance. Or not! Some casinos offer free lessons on many of the house games. Most would agree that it´s essential to watch the games in play too, to get a feel for how they operate. And if you do win, big or small, remember to save it and walk away! If not, for sure you will lose it all again and probably more too! If you want to escape from the flashing lights and beeping noises of the machines for a while, there are plenty of alternative forms of entertainment available. The most obvious is taking in a show – famous singers, magicians, entertainers of all walks of life are to be found here, year round. You could also visit the Grand Canyon, many hotels can book this excursion for you, whether your preferred mode is by bus or by helicopter. Another not to be missed experience is a visit to the Hoover Dam, usually around 3 hours for a guided excursion of this awesome structure, and perhaps with a detour to a chocolate factory or botanic gardens on the return journey.

Flights, hotels and excursions can all be arranged via Worldwide Horizons, contact them on 966 761 492 or travel@whtravel.es for more details.

The spirit of Dylan Thomas WELSH POET Dylan Thomas would have probably approved of the method of fund raising for the Nepal Earthquake Appeal – a basket left on the bar at Javea Players’ Studio Theatre. by Jack Troughton A near capacity audience had gathered to hear members of Javea Book circle pay homage to the writer, making their presentation ‘Before Milkwood’; an adaptation of three pieces of his muchadmired work, short stories ‘A visit to Grandpa’s’ and ‘the Outing’, and BBC script ‘A Return Journey to Swansea’. The readers on stage succeeded in capturing the energy, humour, and creativity of Wales’ best-known poet. Introducing the presentation, Javea Players’ Chairman Mike Harvey had confessed his strong connections to Swansea and suggested the audience could drop a donation in the basket. A whip round at the bar might well have been the way Thomas himself would suggest helping a worthy cause – and 255€ were dropped into the basket.

Suspect suicide CLASSIC THEATRE comes to the Costa Blanca this month when JB Priestley’s ‘An Inspector Calls’ is unveiled at the group’s Alcalali Theatre.

by Jack Troughton The well to do Birling family are quizzed by a clever detective after the suicide of young Eva Smith as the privileged are called to answer what drove her to such a course of action – exposing the socialist leanings of the writer. Set in 1912, the play remains a thriller but is Priestley’s barbed attack on his perception of the injustices and moral hypocrisy of the Victorian and Edwardian period. And whatever the personal views of playwright or his audience, the piece – a

debut for Director Scott Hamer – is thought provoking and triggers discussion. An Inspector Calls runs from Thursday 21st May to Saturday 23rd May. Doors open at 7.30pm for the 8pm performances. Tickets are 12€, with discounts of groups of 10 or more, and can be reserved by calling 652 294 750 or by email to carelineboxoffice@gmail.com Pictured in period costume are Neil Carter as Mr Birling with Tash Fish as daughter sheila and (right) her fiance George played by Phil Anderson.

Open all hours

SHOPPERS FROM the Javea-based charity Caritas took advantage of a ‘lock in’ to browse the shelves of the original charity shop ‘out of hours’. The charity shop has launched a new initiative to open its doors to those who are unable to visit in normal opening times – and give groups the chance of a shopping spree on an afternoon of their choice. The Caritas ladies were the first to take advantage of the opportunity and enjoyed a glass of cava, a chat, and a look over the spring and summer selection of clothes and the shop’s other goodies. And the offer of an afternoon visit to the shop at Avenida Fontana 14, Javea, is open to groups of eight or more. Contact the Original Charity Shop by calling 96 646 0803, email info@charityshoplibrary.com, or visit the website www.charityshoplibrary.com for more information.

If it’s not broke.... HI AUNTY. Last week ,after 5 years of using it ,windows 7 suddenly flashed up that my copy of windows 7 was an illegal copy, which of course it isn’t. I have the product number, but what I was wondering is, if I input the number and try to register it what would happen if it didn’t accept it, would it close down altogether. At the moment it continues to work as normal and so is it a case of ‘if it’s not broke don’t fix it’. Thanks, Michael Aunty says: Windows does have an issue flashing up “Not genuine” messages, especially after updates. IF you have a legitimate product number for the copy of Windows you are using, then you should have no problems reactivating it. Windows should not “close down” or cease to functions. But what may happen is that updates may not be applied, and some other online functionality may become restricted.

AVG and Anti-Malwarebytes Hello Aunty, Do I need to use AVG as well as anti-malwarebytes or should I uninstall AVG ? Regards, Barry Aunty says: AVG should be used as your antivirus, always running. I use Anti-malware like an extra. Run manually, once a week or fortnight, just in case AVG has not picked up something.

people Reach Out get their guns out REACH OUT received a generous donation from Los Pistoleros last week. The Los Rosales Restaurant Guardamar was once again the annual charity donation venue for ‘The Pistoleros’ Westerners group.. Their generosity was again extended to “Reach Out”, one of their chosen charities. This worthwhile charity for the poor and homeless were very happy to receive a cheque for 700€ thanks to the efforts of Country and Western Band, Los Pistoleros. A 700€ cheque was presented to “Reach Out” president Karolina Leonard and their shop manageress Lorraine Whitney, who represented the charity on the night. Their words of thanks, on behalf of all the poor and homeless people being helped by Reach Out, were a touching reminder of the poverty suffered by some members of the community. Reach Out would like to thank the venue and Los Pistoleros for their generosity.

Paul Cunningham Nurses - Thanks Nicolle Pettman

The talented Miss York By Jack Troughton JAVEA TEENAGER Nicolle York hit the right note with judges in the competition the Costa Blanca’s Got Talent to win 2,500€ and a handsome trophy. The 16-year-old won the talent competition sponsored by radio station Sunshine FM which started in January and has seen her compete in seven rounds and travel many miles – each

stage of the contest being held at the Emerald Isle, La Florida, Orihuela Costa. Nicolle performed two songs each week, with one contestant being eliminated from her group at each stage. The contestants surviving the semi-finals were given a fortnight to rehearse their version of ‘Once in My Life’ by Stevie Wonder, as well as a number of their own choice. And Nicolle chose to also perform

‘Jar of Hearts’, originally by Cristina Perry - singing and playing keyboard. Her two faultless performances beat large bands, several with large numbers of supporters. A student, Nicolle is currently studying for A Levels, including music, and hopes to continue her music studies at university.

PAUL CUNNINGHAM Nurses Charity would like to say a huge thank you to Paul Moran and all the hardworking staff at the Emerald Isle, La Florida, for hosting the Charity Fun Day in aid of Paul Cunningham Nurses Charity. The sun shone brightly on entertainers, stalls, fashion show and a mega raffle. The fashion show was hosted by the charity and all the courageous models were volunteers from the Paul Cunningham charity shops. They looked stunning in their outfits as they strutted their stuff around the swimming pool. The total raised form the generous people who attended was 406€.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin

Conjunctions – and, but, or etc AFTER THE minor complications of the last few articles, I have decided to return to something much more straightforward to give all our brains a rest. Yes, we are going to talk about the words “and” and “but”, along with one or two similar items. THESE WORDS are called “conjunctions”, and for those of you who have just groaned, this is not as abstract as it may sound. “Conjunction” simply means something that joins things together and you can see this is the word itself. “Junction” means “joining” and “con” often pops up in words in English and Spanish to mean “with” or “together”, which is of course exactly what “and” and “but” do. Let’s look at an example in English. Here are two short sentences: “I am a teacher. I like teaching Spanish”. If I were to speak exactly like that I would sound a bit childish and breathless, so I join it together with a “conjunction” “I am a teacher and I like teaching Spanish”. The meaning of these two sentences flow together and don’t present us with any surprises, but if I wanted to express a contrast I would change the conjunction to “but”. “I am a teacher, but I hate teaching Spanish” – for example. I expect that most people reading this know that “and” in Spanish is “y” and “but” is “pero” giving us: “Soy profesora y me gusta enseñar español” and “Soy profesora pero odio enseñar español”. Now here is something about “y” that you may not be aware of. When “y” appears before a word that starts with the same sound in Spanish, that is beginning with “i” or “hi”, it changes to “e”. For example: “El hombre es muy guapo, simpático e inteligente” (The man is very

handsome, nice and intelligent. No, I don’t know who he is, I’ve just made him up). A phrase sometimes seen in written Spanish is “a nivel nacional e internacional” (at national and international level). Another example can be seen written on delivery vans and lorries: “Federico Gonzalez e hijos” (… and sons). The reason is for the sake of clear pronunciation, because when the same vowel is found at the end of one word and the beginning of the next they inevitably become joined together in everyday speech, (e.g “Va a andar” tends to sound like “vandar”). Normally we just have to live with it, but in this case someone thought to do something about it! Exactly the same thing happens with another conjunction – “or” which is “o” in Spanish. “O” changes to “u” before words beginning with the “o” sound in Spanish which includes the “ho” spelling. Honestly, I’m not just making this up! “¿Te gusta el azul claro u oscuro?” (Do you like light or dark blue?) “Es casa u hotel?” (Is it a house or a hotel?) Going back to “pero”, the great challenge for us is to distinguish it in speech from “perro” meaning “dog”. I sometimes set challenges for my students that complicate their lives more than is strictly necessary, which is what happened when I got a group of intermediate students to debate the differences between dogs and cats as pets. poor lady’s struggle to make her point by starting with “pero perros …” “but dogs ….” for some reason has always stuck in my mind! Sometimes conjunctions are made up of more than one word. This is the case with “either …. or” which in Spanish is “o …. o” and also “ni … ni” meaning “neither … nor”. “O voy manaña o el miércoles” (“I’ll either go tomorrow or on Wednesday”) “Ni me gusta, ni me interesa” (I neither like it, nor does it interest me). There are other kinds of conjunctions which make more complex combinations, such as “porque” (because), “aunque” (although), “así que” (so). They are called subordinate conjunctions because they link an idea that depends on another in some way. I will finish with examples of these three and then shut up while the going is good and I’ve managed to convince you that it’s all wonderfully simple! “Me gusta leer los artículos de Jane porque aprendo mucho” “Me gusta leer los artículos de Jane aunque a veces los encuentro difíciles de entender” “Me gusta leer los artículos de Jane así que los leo cada semana sin falta”. ¡Hasta la semana que viene!

Bicycle use reduces heart attack risk Riding a bicycle reduces the risk of suffering a heart attack, according to specialists at the Torrevieja and Murcia Quirón Hospitals. The use of a bicycle has several important health benefits, says Doctor Ernesto de Casas, a specialist in traumatology and orthopaedic surgery at the Hospital Quirón Torrevieja and Murcia: “It is one of the most complete activities that helps to prevent back pain, protect the joints and improve the circulatory and immunological system, as well as maintain good mental health.” According to a survey by the Organización de Consumidores y Usuarios (OCU, Spanish acronym for the Organisation for Consumers and Users), the number of people using a bicycle more than once a week has grown in the past four years, to 47%. In addition, the number of people riding a bicycle to work has doubled, going from 6.8% to 11.9%, according to the latest Barómetro de la Bicicleta [Bicycle Barometer] issued by the Dirección General de Tráfico [General Transit Department]. Cycling is an excellent form of cardiovascular exercise, with a very low risk of injury. Doctor Ramón Fernández, specialist in rehabilitation medicine at Hospital Quirón Torrevieja, states, “In physical medicine and rehabilitation, it has been proven that cardiovascular exercise on a bicycle lowers the risk of heart attack, since it promotes an improved resistance to insulin, lowers blood pressure, increases the contractile capacity of the thorax and promotes a significant improvement in the balance of lipids in the body, lowering bad (LDL, Lipoprotein A) and

raising good cholesterol (HDL).” When riding a bicycle, we exercise the upper and lower parts of the body, performing a very complete workout, which is particularly indicated for people with weight problems or cardiovascular diseases. Below, we explain some of the benefits of switching to two wheels: More Pedalling, Less Heart Attacks Riding a bicycle lowers the risk of heart attack by 50%: cycling raises your heart rate and lowers your blood pressure, so the heart saves resources. In addition, it lowers bad cholesterol, while increasing the amount of good cholesterol, which protects our blood vessels. Therefore, blood vessel flexibility improves, plaque accumulation becomes less frequent, and the risk of artery calcification is lowered. A Good Posture prevents Back Pain Depending on the type of bicycle we use, we must choose the recommended posture. The bicycle seat is our weight-bearing point so, depending on what height we adjust the seat at, we will not only be more comfortable, but benefit our back as well. In general, we recommend adjusting the seat so our body is leaning forward, so that the back muscles are engaged and the core stabilised. Cycling strengthens the lumbar region and prevents the appearance of herniated discs. Exercised and Protected Joints Some cardio exercises, such as running, overload the joints, especially the knees. On a

bicycle, however, 70-80% of the body’s weight is supported by the seat. This way, the joints exercise, but they are protected from harsh impacts and overloading. When the joints work under low pressure, energy and nutrition can be spread to the cartilage more easily. These long-term benefits prevent arthrosis.

to feel the results of cycling on your body. With only 10 minutes of cycling a day, you can feel the results at a muscular level, in your blood flow and in your joints. With 30 minutes, you can feel heart benefits, and 50 minutes stimulate the fatty acid metabolism.

A Stronger Immune System Cycling favours the mobilisation of phagocytes, the cells that devour bacteria in our body. This mobilisation also aids the destruction of bacteria and cancer cells, which makes it a good therapeutic complement for cancer and AIDS patients.

A Healthier Mind When cycling, the brain’s oxygenation improves and it produces more endorphins, “the happiness hormones”, which are produced in greater amount during exercise. In addition, it has been proven that people who ride bicycles suffer less from depression and other psychological conditions.

A Small Effort with a Large Reward It’s not necessary to invest too much time

Massaging figures by Jack Troughton TWO CALPE charities have provided the town’s medical centre with a much-appreciated massage machine to help ease the problems of patients. The ‘dynamic compression therapy machine’ was donated by the Charity Shop of Calpe and the Calpe Benissa Lions Club - and will be particularly important for breast cancer patients who develop the side-effect lymphodema and the treatment of oedema, swelling caused by fluid retention. President John Bridge said the charity shop had contributed 1,500€, the balance donated

by the Lions. “The nearest machine is at Denia hospital and there is a long waiting list,” he told RTN. “Now instead of sending people all the way to Denia, they will be given an appointment here by their doctor and be seen by a physio. “This is a bit of a coup for Calpe. Now the centre has this machine people can come here and use it.” Pictured holding the machine is director of the centre Elia Ortuno with members of the two charity teams.

Horoscopes Mars enters into Gemini and finds that it is hard to make a decision that seems to be acceptable for all concerned right now. The end result maybe be done and dusted but there is much to be taken into consideration meanwhile, especially since there has been much water under the bridge and not everything has been revealed. Venus is ensconced in Saturn, and the wisdom of the past may come in useful right now whilst there are still deals to be done and the impetus is high. One side of you wants to run for cover whilst the other clearly does see transparency as a way forward. Whatever there is nothing to hide and everything to be gained if you wait and see. Mars takes over the day to day running of a project that would seem to be running on empty right now. Sheer doggedness and a healthy infusion of your superior talents will win the day, but it is what’s next that is the true focus. Things aren’t what they used to be, and some old fashioned values are needed to steer this ship onwards. Calibration of the Moon’s recent patterns and would reveal and underline some of the many changes that are out there and on the cards. It is vital that you have your say, and that others value your current commitment and all that this entails. There is a fly in the ointment and its extraction clearly answers the questions you dare not ask. With the Sun in Pluto there comes a time to be both analytical and precise, and for very good reason. You are making a rod for your own back if you really think that others should be allowed to get away with things right now, when it should be all hands on the pump. You have set a precedent now that is highly inspiring to follow. A financial corner opens and it almost immediately underlines a deficiency in your budget that has to be addressed. Tightening the belt, though it may help, isn’t really enough to bring solvency back on the table. There have been some recent essential purchases which haven’t helped, particularly when economy is the way ahead now. You have been sorely tempted to spill the beans and just tell the truth, but you are protecting somebody who would greatly suffer as a result. As tensions rise and you weigh up the pro’s and the con’s it is not up to you to reveal past transgressions, but it is time to walk away from all of this with your head held high.....so move on! With Mars in Gemini there is a real chance that you will find the loophole you have been looking for. Time is of the essence this week, and changed appointments and re timings are all designed to take you closer to what you are currently seeking; well away from that which drags you down to the unacceptable levels others palm off on you. All that glitters is not gold, and whilst pastures new may be beckoning you on, they are not the escape route you should take. A friend appears to be making things very difficult for themselves, but you are implicated in actions that are not your responsibility and you have to ensure that you wash your hands of any ensuing blame. Mercury and Neptune allow a deeper focus to unravel a mystery that has been hard to solution. In hindsight you would never have got involved if you new what was coming, but right now you are naturally curious to solve the puzzle. Somebody is being economical with the truth, but why they are lying, you are about to find out! Love finds a way as someone makes a bid for your affection. Don’t let an offer in the here and now pass you by because of past transgressions of others. Your current commitments should not preclude you from accepting a valid invitation. You never know what can happen when you let it, but good will come from this! Neptune has a run in with Mercury which comes to a head this week. Sometimes it is better not to know what is going on, especially since you are so proud and inspiring to others. Let others dig the dirt, use this new balance to show you solution and clearance, because times are changing and you have spiritual work to do right now.

FEAR IS a four letter word. It is the main reason that loved ones in the Spirit World cannot receive the blessing they need to start the communication they want to do. If your family is scared of the supernatural, nervous of initiating a spiritual dialogue or fearful of contacting the dead then those who have passed over do not have a chance to start communication with you. Such communication can be initiated by either side of the two way street that is the communication centre between the living and the dead. Spirit have an absolute right to make contact, but they are always told that they are not to contact the Earth Plane with a view to bring fear on any level. Good coaching means that the messages are therefore sometimes not sent, and if they are then they are sent when the majority of people can receive them; when they are unconscious or sub conscious. During sleep we dream constantly, but we are able to snore away for eight hours and then, just maybe, we have no recollection of our dreams on waking. Some dreams are a breakthrough to us, and just sometimes our loved ones are transmitting to us and their messages are sent in often our deepest level of sleep. These often mammoth attempts to connect are therefore passed over as being mere dreams. They are often very much more then that. Sometimes, and they are very rare, we are given tuition directly from the Spirit World. The essential message here is to help to open our spiritual portals therefore allowing a message to be sent and received. Sadly for all this, very often there is a failure. Our own dream machinery can intercept and annul messages destined especially for us, and although this isn’t ever deliberate it can in process erase specific and poignant communication.

Kenny‛s Postbag

Periodic messages are a feature of the wonderful mechanism that links the two different Worlds in such a way that it provides adequate levels of survival evidence; and the confirmation that our dear departed have the apparatus to make contact with us. Verbal communication, when it is intercepted, is very reassuring as it can convey the specifics that we need to identify and to inspire those who have passed over. I have taken messages on behalf of my clients for years, and relayed them utterly through clairaudience. I have been asked if I filter out these direct messages, but I do not have to. What is said always inevitably revolves around a pain free and existing life in the other dimension of the Spirit World. Nothing negative or abusive is ever transmitted because it is sent to inspire the energies of those who live on dimensional Earth. The passing of such a message is an inspiration as it links the two Worlds and opens the barrier to free and sustainable communication. What has gone wrong if you don’t get your spoken message? Nothing whatsoever, since we are equipped to get cues from other sources that transmit to our olfactory nerve by smell, and visions that dominate our foresights anchoring our dreams through optic variations. Communication is just what it is, and any way it can be perceived and received, it happens. Fear will stop any of these processes. Spirit does not demand that we walk with demons and fight off the undead at anytime. There are aspects that could make anybody fearful, of course, but then those instigating the communication are our loved ones. Their very presence should be a joy to behold, and I hope sincerely that this truly is something you could take on. When fear is factored our loved ones want only to show their survival, against the odds; and their utter love and devotion in needing to start the ball of effective contact rolling in our direction. Everything else is up to us!

KENNY, MY grandmother often comes through to me, and she sits on my bed watching over me from time to time. Lately she appears to be agitated and whereas she was very serene she is now unsettled and appears very briefly. How can I find out what is wrong? Barbara G. Hi Barbara. Have you tried talking directly to your grandmother? I wouldn’t advise this normally, but you are very connected to her and are unafraid of her spiritual energies around you. Tell her you are concerned and want to know how you can help. Tell her you are worried about her. Let me know what happens!

Who wants to be a millionaire? WELL PICK up that bag of clubs and be a caddy!

By Tony Myles THERE HAVE been a number of incidents over the years concerning Caddies and usually these are accompanied by controversy. The inference is that, more generally, these guys are figures in the background looking after their charges. SO HOW IMPORTANT ARE THEY? For many spectators the awareness of caddies probably started with Fanny. After all the sad jokes have subsided - she was obviously a valuable asset to Nick Faldo. For probably the first time the general public noticed that the person carrying the bag was actually doing more than merely being a human trolley. Help and guidance coupled with advice on club selection were apparent, but more importantly, a

calming voice when the player may have become over anxious or suffering an adrenalin rush. Then there was the high profile firing of Steve Williams by Tiger Woods who at the time was trying to get just one part of his life back into a semblance of order. There were lots of surprised expressions at the time, as it was felt that the last thing he needed was one more shift in his equilibrium. This was further emphasised when Steve then picked up the bag for Adam Scott who went on to win his next major. Campbell has just returned from Scotland where he was promoting the Campbell Lamont Leagues and whilst there he hired a caddy for his round at St Andrews. According the Campbell had he not had his advice the scorecard would have contained a number of higher scores. There was also the incident when a caddy failed

Head 2 Head Tony M - I see you had a caddy when you played St Andrews. Campbell - Yes he was excellent. Helped me a lot. Tony M - Better than my experience. Campbell - Why is that? Tony M - I was having a nightmare round and he

wasn’t helping. Campbell - So what did you say to him? Tony M - I told him he must be the worst caddy in the world of golf. Campbell - He must have thought that would be too much of a coincidence!

to perform and the result was a disaster for Jean van der Velde. Most will remember him playing the 18th at Carnoustie when even a double bogey would have meant that he would lift the Claret Jug. What happened? His ball landed in the water and instead of smacking him on the head for even considering it, his caddy allowed him the squander shots by trying to play the ball from the hazard. More recently Miguel Angel Jimenez had cause to have words with his opponent’s caddy. There was a dispute regarding a dropped ball and Keegan Bradley’s caddy, Steve ‘Pepsi’ Hale, decided to offer his opinion. Miguel advised him that it wasn’t required which resulted in nose-to-nose confrontations. So whilst the vast majority keep a very low profile these incidents will serve to remind the spectator that these guys do more than merely carry the clubs and, of course, pocketing 10% of the winnings can very satisfying which meant that the richest New Zealand sportsman was the aforementioned Steve Williams.
