PP sings election blues

SPAIN’S REGIONAL and local elections last Sunday were largely a disaster for the conservative Partido Popular as many absolute majorities were wiped out at the ballot box. The PP is reported to have lost control in 30 of 52 provincial capitals across the country and it is predicted left-wing alliances could gain control of some 27 cities – depending on the success of behind the scenes ‘coalition-building’. The trend continued into the Valencian Community. In the provincial capitals of Valencia, Alicante and Castellon all lost their PP mayors. And Valencia’s President Alberta Fabra was also out of a job and likely to be replaced by Ximo Puig of the socialists or Monica Oltra of Compromis. Across Spain, the results reflect a reversal of 2011 when the PP rode a wave of success as socialist rivals were handed defeat at the polls through their perceived mismanagement of the economic crisis. Four years later, and despite signs of economic recovery,

new “populist” political groups have come forward and enjoyed success. El Pais has reported the trend. “The emergence of new political groups has created a fragmented political scenario in which nobody can claim complete control of city councils or regional assemblies. “Faced with the need for alliances, leftist forces are reaching deals to insure one of their own sits in city halls, even in municipalities where the PP was the most voted-for force.” And talking to politicians, it was clear the ongoing scandal of corruption and various court cases – including the massive Gurtel case - has cost the PP dearly. There is also an apparent protest vote against the central government and PP Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy. The austerity policies put into place to guarantee Europe’s support

through the crisis have not been popular in a country hit by massive unemployment. The PP party leaders in Madrid are already looking ahead to this winter’s general election in Spain and will want to steady the ship before the country again goes to the polls. However, there are exceptions to every rule. On the Costa Blanca, the young PP team in Teulada-Moraira took 46.5% of the vote and won nine seats to enjoy a working majority at the town hall. In Calpe, the PP managed almost 39% of the vote and also won nine seats – one short of a majority. The socialists of PSOE were the next biggest party but could only win 19.5% of the votes balloted. Rapid response beats blaze

AN ALMOST instant response by emergency services prevented another forest fire tragedy on the sides of the Montgo National Park on Monday evening – the scene of a devastating blaze last September.

By Jack Troughton VALENCIA’S EMERGENCY fire coordination centre immediately mobilised ground teams and a six strong fleet of aircraft to the tinder dry mountainside just outside the Nova Xabia urbanisation. A total of three acres of land were burned and three homes were evacuated as a precaution in the third fire to strike the Marina Alta town in recent weeks. With ground teams struggling to reach the seat of the fire because of the rough terrain, a helicopter flying overhead directed the aircraft – two choppers and a seaplane dropped water on the flames, while two other planes bombed the area

with flame retardant chemicals. Cars lined the Jesus Pobre road to watch the action develop – the burned area is close to the base of the ‘trunk’ of the elephant shaped mountain. The aircraft were stood down at sunset but four teams of firefighters and four fire engines remained on Calle Lastres, below the fire, through the night and through the next day firemen remained on the scene to insure the flames did no reignite. And the Guardia Civil is currently investigating the cause of the fire and areas have been sealed off.

Tram death on the Benidorm to Denia route A YOUNG woman, aged 29, died on Tuesday evening around 6.30pm when she was hit by a tram travelling from Benidorm to Denia. The accident occurred at the last level crossing before the station of Denia as the barriers were being lowered and the crossing lighting had been activated. It is believed that the young woman was wearing headphones at the time of the accident and despite the tram driver calling out to her several times she was unable to hear his pleas and was struck by the tram. The medical team (SAMU) attended the incident but were unable to save the woman, who died at the scene.

Another Lufthansa incident as victims repatriated from Germanwings disaster LUFTHANSA, THE parent company of Germanwings, closed its identification process on May 15th for the remains left after the Germanwings disaster and began notifying the families of the deceased about the repatriation of their loved ones. by Jeanette Rice WHILST INVESTIGATIONS point to the co-pilot having deliberately crashed the aircraft, and that it was not caused through mechanical failure, the Lufthansa Airbus fleet has experienced another incident in Germany. On Tuesday, a Lufthansa Airbus was flying from Frankfurt to Atlanta in America when it experienced engine problems. With 276 passengers on board the flight was still climbing from Frankfurtâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s runway when the crew experienced the difficulties. The aircraft spent 90 minutes dumping fuel before it was able to return to the runway, where it landed safely, but with many distressed passengers. Passenger details for the Germanwings disaster in March show that there were 50 Spanish nationals on board the aircraft when it crashed into the Alps in France, including three generations of one family. All the families have been advised that due to the nature of the impact there are very few remains for their loved ones but that the utmost respect has been given to the remains that they identified. The majority of the families have requested an out of court settlement, preferring not to go to trial. A criminal investigation is already under way in France, and if families of the victims wish they can participate. Germanwings, a budget airline, had experienced the greatest growth in Spain in the previous few years, ranked in the top twenty in terms of passenger traffic. The company had predicted a 45% growth for the first quarter of 2015 but since the tragic crash the figure has dropped to 6%.

Worker electrocuted whilst working A man, aged 54, died whilst working on an electric pole in the town of Albatera in Alicante. The accident happened on Tuesday whilst the worker was up the pole on the industrial estate of del El Moco carrying out maintenance. The accident occurred around 12.45pm when the man was electrocuted and found to be hanging by his safety harness about five metres in the air. Fire services from Elche attended and lowered the pole but when the medical support team arrived he was certified dead.

by Jeanette Rice POLICE INTERCEPTED a fishing boat in the Atlantic and discovered 1,950 kilos of cocaine. The boat, flying the Polynesian flag, was boarded 1,480 kilometres from the Canary Islands by police and navy officers who found the drugs after having suspicions that the captain was a drug trafficker. The captain of the fishing boat was ar-

rested at sea along with the other crew members, and although the fishing vessel suffered a breakdown it was eventually brought into port by the navy vessel. The ministry of the Interior stated that with this find the Spanish Security Forces had discovered in excess of five tonnes since the beginning of the year.

More air traffic control strikes planned

USCA (Union of Spanish Air Traffic Controllers) have announced further strikes may take place in June. The proposed strikes are planned for 8th, 10th, 12th and 14th of June. Whilst these are only partial strikes, between 10am and 12 noon and 6pm and 8pm, if they go ahead the disruption will inevitably be the same as a whole day strike. This strike has been called as union members support colleagues who have been penalised in Barcelona for a previous strike action in 2010.

Patient raised no concerns AN ELDERLY patient discharged last at night from accident and emergency raised no concerns about going home, Denia Hospital said this week.

The 92-year-old woman had suffered a fall at home the previous day and was kept at the hospital for observation after hitting her head and injuring her back. Last week, RTN reported how her 94-yearold husband said it was “scandalous” and a “weakness” in the system she arrived back in Javea after 10pm without anyone inquiring whether there was someone to care for her. He said he suffered advanced Parkinson’s disease, suffered a heart condition, and with his own mobility problems was unable to care for his wife – and because of no notice being given could not alert carers for emergency help. The first he knew of his wife’s discharge was when there was a knock at the door and neighbours arrived with an ambulance man and his spouse still dressed in hospital clothes. A – the couple wish to remain anonymous – was released at 9.44pm on 17th April after being at A&E for 20 hours. As a patient dealt with in the department she was considered a “walk in” patient and it was normal practice for her to be discharged after treatment and observation was completed – “normal practice” for hospitals around the world. “If a person is of legal age and they are competent and able to understand what is happening in the clinical process and the report they are given, they are discharged,” said the spokesman. “It is clear that the doctor made a report to the patient with a translator...at no time was there any doubts raised and there was nothing said by the patient that they could not go home.” In addition, he said ambulance drivers insured that there was someone to receive the patient back at home without any problems. “Therefore this patient was sent back to their home address in very normal circumstances.”

Eurovision 2015 disappointment for the UK SATURDAY NIGHT proved to be yet another disappointing Eurovision song contest event for the UK. by Jeanette Rice This years entry Electro Velvet, who performed “still in love with you” struggled at the bottom of the table, only scoring five points. With France getting four points, Germany and Austria getting none at all it was yet another embarrassing evening for the British fans watching around the world. Sweden’s Mans Zelmerlow, who was the bookies favourite, romped home to win with 365 points, 62 points ahead of second place Russia. Heartthrob Mans Zelmerlow, a 28-year-old singer and television presenter, won with the electro-pop ballad Heroes, giving Sweden it’s sixth win in Eurovision history. Spain didn’t fair much better than the UK, coming 21st out of 27 with fifteen points, although in the past it has been said that the ruling government of Spain had discouraged performers from trying too hard as it was a very expensive event to host.

‘Stock Cupboard Saw’ Used In Op THE INCIDENT at Ayr Hospital started when a metal plate was unexpectedly discovered during an operation to amputate a man’s leg. The health board is investigating claims that surgeons used a saw found in a cupboard. It was reported that staff could not find the equipment to remove the plate, so a member of the surgical team was sent to B&Q to buy a saw, but the DIY shop was closed. Then, a saw was said to have been found in a stock cupboard and was disinfected before being used. Scottish Conservative health spokesman Jackson Carlaw said: “This is an indescribable way to treat any patient. Despite the UK’s advancement in modern medicine this episode has all the finesse of improvised surgery on Nelson’s flagship during Trafalgar. I would hope that NHS Ayrshire and Arran thoroughly investigate this incident as a matter of urgency.” Ann Gow, interim nurse director at the health board, said: “NHS Ayrshire and Arran is currently conducting a review into a recent incident within University Hospital Ayr, where standard procedures were not followed. The findings of this review and any subsequent recommendations will be shared with clinicians, as well as the family of the patient.”

JOURNALIST NIKKI Luxford is spending a year away from reporting the news on the Costa Blanca to work on community-based projects in Africa. by Jack Troughton The 26-year-old has taken a year’s sabbatical to give a helping hand to people living in Malawi, a country that has captivated her and where she strives to make a difference. Her love of travelling began as a teenager when she went to Mexico to visit her sister who was working as a volunteer before they explored the United States. Trips to New Zealand and South Africa followed and this is Nikki’s third – and longest – visit to Malawi. “I enjoy getting to know a country rather than just going to a country and sitting on a beach – on a volunteer project you get a real depth of knowledge,” she said. “I think you are just doing your bit and trying to make a small difference where you can.” Nikki said employers Costa Blanca News been both understanding and supportive – while her parents worry – “because that’s what parents do!” – not least because a previous visit to Malawi left her with a nasty dose of malaria. The generosity of the Vall del Pop community, Nikki has lived in the area since she was 13, prompted her to found charity One Step Malawi to channel the money into sustainable projects. “Before I went the first time, friends and family gave me money to use on the project where I was working. Seeing how far the money went and seeing how much you could do with it, I thought about doing more fund raising,” she said. SCHOOL “My first talk on Malawi was at the Lady Elizabeth School, who gave me 800€ - which paid for 14 Malawians

to become primary school teachers...and people just kept throwing money at me. “The concept was never to run a charity but it was just the sheer numbers of people who wanted to support me and get involved without going themselves that made me start One Step Malawi – they know 100% of the money is going where I say it will.” And so far donations have funded the purchase of mosquito nets; supported a malnutrition clinic; paid for 30 youngsters’ education; funded a community allotment clinic; supported a midwifery clinic; helped build a school; and paid for orphan care. This time, Nikki has travelled to a different area with ‘Ripple Africa’ which she said was a “well-structured” organisation offering a ‘learning and sharing experience’. However, she does not see her commitment to Africa as anything unusual. Nikki has been going to church since the age of two and was both a Brownie and a Guide. “I think you are brought up to believe you help those who need help. “My parents worked very hard for four children, to give us the lifestyle we enjoy and I think you hope to give something back...there’s a successful network of charities and people trying to do good and I think you can build a caring, sharing world.” She added: “It is really enjoyable. by Jack Troughton Mayor Enrique Moll has given the Local Animal Protection Society 7,500€, promised a further 2,500€, and said land has been allocated to build the charity a new shelter – with water and electricity. Chrissie launched LAPS seven years ago and its shelter on the outskirts of Pego is now in its sixth year. However, she has run a bookstall on the town’s market for 12 years – profits have always supported animals and elderly people. On Monday, friends and family arrived at a

square in the town to enjoy a cava and paella party thrown by Chrissie’s husband Stan to celebrate a big birthday. The celebrations had actually started the previous Friday to officially open refurbished kennels at the shelter using a generous 2,000€ donation from UK comedian Dave Spikey – a committed LAPS supporter who witnessed the cutting of the ribbon. “When he has a new show in the UK he does a couple of warm up matinee performances

and always donates the profits to animal charities,” said Chrissie. Unfortunately, the lease on the shelter ends in March and the owner wants to sell the land. “The mayor has said land has been allocated to build a new home with water and electricity by the end of March – so we are pressurising the town hall.” Chrissie said she also hoped to recruit new volunteers to help LAPs and care for its charges, helping them find new homes.

The PP also suffered in Benissa and with eight seats the party needs a friend to govern, while other municipalities also saw the conservatives lose support and the prospect of alliance wrangling stepping rapidly forward. Javea’s socialist Mayor Jose Chulvi watched his PSOE party romp home, taking 14 seats with nearly 60% of the ballot. Former alliance partners Xabia Democratica and Ciudadanos por Javea – in a pre-election pact - took four seats and the PP, in third place, were awarded just two, Compromis winning a single seat. Two weeks ago RTN interviewed Parcent’s Deputy Mayor Jacqui Cotterill who said she had postponed her planned retirement from local politics and fight the election in order to insure the village’s general plan was approved and put in place. Jacqui and her independent party CDP – Coalicio Democratica de Parcent – has been in power since 2007 and again won a working majority with five seats. The PP won three seats and PSOE one.

IAG buys into Aer Lingus AIRLINE GROUP IAG – the owner of British Airways and Iberia – is to buy the Irish governments 25% stake in flag carrier Aer Lingus.

by Jack Troughton The group has agreed to pay £237 million for the shares, an offer based on the £963 million value it places on the Dublin-based airline, a frequent visitor to Alicante’s el Altet airport. International Airlines Group is seeking to buy the Irish airline but must also woo budget competitor Ryanair, which has a 30% holding in Eire’s flag carrier.

And IAG, expected to make a formal offer in the coming days, has pledged to retain the Aer Lingus brand, create new jobs, and promised not to sell the airline’s valuable Heathrow slots for at least seven years. Willie Walsh, chief executive of IAG and a former head of Aer Lingus, has spoken of the “compelling and financial rationale” behind the deal – developing

the group’s network through Dublin and adding a competitive and cost-effective airline to IAG. In an age of consolidation, the group purchased BMI from Lufthansa in 2012 and as well as reviving the fortunes of Iberia, want to open new routes with Aer Lingus, developing Dublin as an international hub.

Little Cassie gets helping hand by Jack Troughton

TOM AND Mary Barrett were left “amazed” by the generosity of expats as they turned out in force to support a fund raising party in aid of 10-year-old grand-daughter Cassie. Last Saturday’s party in Villajoyosa raised 1,500€ - three times more than the couple expected – to help construct a special bedroom for the youngster back at her home in Chalfont St Giles. Cassie has been diagnosed with the rare disease Rett Syndrome that affects brain development and can cause severe physical and mental disabilities. It is currently incurable. From being a normal healthy baby passing the milestones of early life – learning to walk, talk, play and feed herself - she has regressed and will need care for life. Tom and Mary, from Orxeta, decided to raise some funds to help provide some vital stimulation equipment for Cassie’s new room. They organised a celebration

at Bar Tropicana on the Vila seafront and scores of people turned out to help – Neptune’s Bar next door kindly giving up space for the overflow. There was a raffle and tombola with some ‘serious’ donated prizes, entertainment –with singers Charlie Noble, Patrick Aherne and Danny Lee giving up their time for free. Tom told RTN they were “just amazed” by the extent people wanted to help and everything raised would be donated through Cassie’s web page www.gofundme.com/mol774 And he said his daughter and the whole family aimed to visit the Costa Blanca next year. “They want to meet all these people who are really doing things for us.” ILLNESS Tom said Rett was “the worst end of autism” and meant Cassie was “confined by her illness”. He added: She gets out and about and loves it, but of course, it is very

limited all the time.” He explained how when his grand-daughter was born everything was fine and her growth was normal to the age of about 18 months. “All of a sudden I noticed she sort of had a cast in her eyes and they went inwards – I told my daughter and she said she would get it looked at. “Within three months Cassie started to shuffle with her feet, another symptom. By the time the tests were finished they said she had Rett Syndrome.” Now aged 10, he said Cassie could not walk or talk and needed to be fed through a tube – although she can eat normally, it is not enough to sustain her. But he added: “When she is good, she is really good. She goes to school, it is a special school. She is a happy little girl and loves watching television... she rocks back and forwards watching her favourite programmes.”

Work on Cassie’s special room has started – there is a musical mat, lights that shine different colours, and a ‘bean bag’ designed especially for her. However, Tom said they hoped to be able to buy a visually controlled computer and screen to enable Cassie to communicate – and able

to tell her parents if something is wrong, where it is hurting. “I don’t know if it will ever happen,” he added. “But I would love to get in touch with the UK and tell people this is what really happens here on the Costa Blanca – people support good causes and do what they can to help.”

If it’s a scam, tell them to scram Last week I was contacted at home by a supposed Microsoft Windows Engineer who said my computer had been sending out error messages. They said they were calling from Valencia and asked me to go through various checks on my system. After 15 minutes they said they could fix my problems by spending 175 euros. I then told them I had a problem with them wanting money and I was signing off. They then became more insistent and told me my system would crash in 20 minutes if I did not follow their instructions. I do not know how they got my telephone number but I did not give them any information although they may have been able to access my system. The whole situation was very unsettling. With so many scams about, is it any wonder people become suspicious and want to run and hide. If it is a scam, tell them to scram. Robert Murray, Gran Alacant

A Cautionary Tale

RECENTLY MY wife and I renewed our residencias, not without some unwanted surprises. When we obtained our residencias nearly six years ago we did not need to have health insurance. Now, the government has passed laws requiring everyone to have health insurance to be a resident. My wife therefore contacted one insurance company that advertised monthly health insurance for only 45€. This seemed to good to be true. The actual cost was considerably more per month. When we asked why the advertisement was different, the person at the company pretended innocence. We even scanned the advert and emailed it to her, but she refused to acknowledge it was misleading advertising. The moral of this tale is ‘Be careful! When something seems to good to be true, it usually is!’. Brad Coe, La Mata

Careful with who you trust My Husband died late last year, so I decided to come back to UK. A man was recommended for the removal of all my goods and chattels. He vastly underestimated the amount of furniture etc. I did ask him in front of witnesses of how much extra I would have to pay, nothing he said as it was his mistake. The 1st load came and straight into storage no problem, the rest a complete different scenario. 7 weeks later it arrived, with so much missing, clothes, bedding, etc, to do this to a grieving widow was a complete disgrace. So watch out with who you trust. Anyone who got an Old Charm hall table, a tallboy and a dark green sheepskin rug, beware they were stolen, they even took my kettle and toaster. So much for trusting fellow old pats, My insurance became invalid the minute it the goods left the house. I do hope you will print this letter to forewarn people in the future.

Charity suffers cruel theft ANIMAL CHARITY APASA is counting the cost of a cruel sneak thief stealing Saturday’s takings from its Javea shop. by Jack Troughton The opportunistic crime netted around 160€ for the heartless villain – the light-fingered bandit taking a money wallet containing the cash in a momentary lapse of concentration by APASA’s shop volunteers. The charity, which runs the town’s animal shelter and home to nearly 300 dogs, is struggling to care for the rising canine population. In the last two weeks alone, 30 puppies have been rescued and placed with foster families. APASA President Mandy Conway told

RTN: “We had cashed up and someone obviously saw an opportunity and took the money wallet. “We are all working so hard in the shop to make some money because it is a struggle and every penny counts, we are just trying to keep the charity going – I hope they are thoroughly ashamed. “These people are very mean and coldhearted to steal from a charity and everyone in the team working last Saturday is absolutely distraught.”

THE ROUNDABOUT Charity Shop in Javea is desperately trying to recruit volunteers to avert a crisis over staffing levels. The shop in Javea Port continues to support good causes in the local community but has seen its team numbers hit by health problems and people returning to the UK. And so the charity is asking anyone who can spare just one morning a week to step up to the mark and help out – just pop into the shop and ask for details. The Roundabout Charity Shop is on Avenida del Fueros, just off Avenida del Furs, close to the ‘fountain roundabout’ at the entrance to Javea Port. The shop is open Monday to Saturday, 10am to 1.30pm.

PP win absolute majority in 35 municipalities ALICANTE VOTERS decided that the Partido Popular will govern in 35 municipalities however they will need support in a further 39 localities if they wish to share power. by Keith Nicol Overall, in the province of Alicante, the Partido Popular achieved an absolute majority in 35 municipalities, while the PSPV hold power in 27 locations, with six taken by Compromís and Ciutadans and the EUPV one. Another nine municipalities have local governments that are still up for grabs and could go to a variety of combinations. Alicante voters also decided that the PP has a relative majority to govern, but need support in 39 municipalities, the PSPV need a partner in 14 municipalities, Compromís in four C’s in another. For the next four years, the Partido Popular hold power in Alcocer de Planes, Algueña, Almudaina, Benejúzar, Beniarbeig, Beniarrés, Benifallim, Benifato, Benijofar, Benillup, Bigastro, Busot, Campo de Mirra, Canada, Castell de Guadalest, Daya Vieja, Facheca, Famorca, Finestrat, Formentera del Segura, Hondón of the Friars, Llíber, Murla, La Nucia, Planes, Quatretonda, Redován, Salinas, San Miguel de Salinas, Relleu, Tollos, Tormos, Teulada, Torremanzanas and La Vall de Laguar. HUNDREDS OF gleaming and powerful motorcycles will be on show on the Costa Blanca on Sunday 14th June – before they form a cavalcade along the coast from Albir to Benidorm and back. by Jack Troughton It promises to be one of the largest exhibitions of two, three and fourwheeled power in Spain this year, with over 500 machines expected. The Costa Blanca Espana Harley Davidson Biker Group has organised the annual Fun Day based at Eucalyptus Park in Albir - and the ‘ride out’ - with fun for all the family. Naturally, the biggest attraction will be the chance to see a unique collection of Harley Davidsons, with groups expected to come from as far away as Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia. The group hopes to raise thousands of Euros for charity Make A Smile, which runs a self-sufficiency project in Relleu to support children cared for by EMAUS. And chipping in to help the cause are 19 ‘Biker Babes’ who have raised money in order to enjoy a pillion seat ride in the motorcade. Peter Emmett, the biker group’s press officer, told RTN: “All I asked them for was 100€ each but it could be a potentially be as much as a 12,000€ total. “There will be more than 500 bikes on show. They will be coming from everywhere – certainly chapters from Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia. Every group into bikes has been invited.” He said the biker procession along

the coast needed the cooperation of three local police forces – Alfaz, Altea, and Benidorm. “They all have to liaise to make it work and 50 to 60 officers help out,” said Peter. “It’s a huge undertaking because they need to be at every junction and roundabout to stop other traffic. By the time you hit Benidorm, the crowds just get bigger and bigger. “We just hope the weather stays fine and it should be a remarkable and memorable day for everyone to enjoy.”

However, bikers and members of the public can pay 10€ to support eh fund-raising and in return will be given a souvenir package, including a special fun day t-shirt, a voucher for two drinks and a snack, and ‘goodies’ donated by sponsors. Other attractions at Eucalyptus Park include trade stands; a raffle; a mechanical bull ride; a kiddies’ play area; and live rock from the band ‘Duel of the Guitars’.

THE HALLOWED turf of the Mastella Football Stadium – home of La Liga club Valencia CF – was closely examined by 40 members of Javea U3A’s Spanish culture and cuisine group. Recognised as one of the most intimidating stadiums in Europe for travelling teams, the group enjoyed a guided tour of the ‘history, heart and legend’ of the historic club. They were able to see the President’s Box, the dressing rooms, the tunnel, the dugout, and step out onto the pitch itself. A typical Spanish lunch restored batteries before the group visited the Plaza de Toros de Valencia, one of the major bullrings of the world. U3A Moraira-Teulada Spanish Themed Picnic ON 19TH May the U3A Moraira had planned a “party in the park” at Font Santa in Moraira. by Patricia Thompson Unfortunately, on the day, it was t cool and cloudy and, as the social sub--committee and helpers started to erect gazebos, to keep the sun off the entertainers, it started to rain. However this didn’t dampen peoples’ enthusiasm and in true stoic British style 200 members turned up armed with not only their picnics, but umbrellas and jackets too. Of course most Brits are used to arranging outdoor events which turn into battles with the elements! As everyone arrived and set up their tables with friends they were entertained by the steel band Poco Loco. It was a shame that the sun didn’t shine as steel bands are synony-

mous with sun, but at least the rain stopped. Then, when most people had settled down, Duo Intermezzo sang excerpts from Carmen and other operas. Meanwhile two gigantic paellas were prepared, and the duo took a break while everyone tucked in. Sangría also kept the Spanish theme going. Duo Intermezzo returned to entertain us for another hour with an excellent performance, ably supported by local singer Dave Peachey. At the end the members gave them a standing ovation and they had to perform an encore. On the whole we were lucky with the weather, as in a lot of nearby areas there was torrential rain.

Costa Blanca promotes language tourism in Boston THIS WEEK The Costa Blanca Tourism Board have been selling the virtues of learning Spanish through language tourism at the NAFSA Fair in Boston. by Keith Nicol It’s the first time that the Board have promoted the region in the USA, attending the event in order to raise the profile of the province as a national and international reference for Spanish language tourism. The US is one of the most important markets in the world in the segment of language tourism. In North American, with it’s close ties to Spanish speaking nations of South America, the Caribbean and Puerto Rico, Spanish is the countries second language with many areas of the USA, such as Little Havana in Miami, being the first langage of the region. “Spanish has acquired greater importance as more and more states are adopting bilingualism in public administration,” explained the Deputy of Tourism Joaquín Albaladejo. The Board, which is attending this event with the University of Alicante and the Federation of Schools of Spanish for Foreigners (FEDELE), has its own stand from which the different Castilian learning programs that are developed in the province are represented as well as the variety and quality of products that make up the complementary offer of the Costa

Blanca. This includes not only learning Spanish but covers such subjects as Gastronomy, culture, leisure and sports, among others The NAFSA fair finishes today, Friday May 29th in Boston, which is one of the cities with the highest academic standing in the world. Albaladejo explained that, “Spain is the second most popular destination for Americans to learn Spanish” and noted that “About a million people visit Spain each year for training purposes, a very interesting market niche for the province of Alicante, which has great potential to capture this audience not only through the quality of its universities and language schools, but also for its climate, beaches, culture, communication and gastronomy.” Currently, the Costa Blanca receives more than 50,000 students a year who overall spend close to 190 million euros on education, about 3,700€ of average expenditure per person. The Board, through the brand ‘Enjoy and Learn’ is continually working to adapt and promote the tourism potential of the province to the needs of foreign students and thus attract as many students as possible.

U3A heads south

GRANADA AND the Alpujarras were explored by 32 members of U3A Vall del Pop in a nine-day trip that provided a host of visits and experiences. by Jack Troughton The tour began with a visit to a cave house at Purullena, near Guadix, where the owner turned guide and explained how five generations of his family had lived in the unusual home. And the holiday naturally included a visit to the world-famous Alhambra Palace, a tour of the historic city, and a flamenco show in the Albaracin, the gypsy area. A tip into the Sierra Nevada mountains provided a surprise – there was still snow on the peaks. The final three nights of the holiday were enjoyed in the beauty of the Alpujarras, south of Granada and based in the picturesque white village of Capiliera, perched high in the mountains. Many of the group purchased locally made and colourful carpets and a further highlight was a visit to a traditional ‘jamon’ maker in Trevelez, with an opportunity to taste the finished product. There was also a visit to a ‘hippy’ market in Orgava, followed by refreshments in Lanjaron, where the group sipped several types of the local spring water. At the U3A Vall del Pop general meeting on Thursday 4th June, speaker Jean Watkinson will present a short story with pictures and Arabic poetry to illustrate the 800-year occupation of the Iberian Peninsula by the Moors – a subject she has thoroughly researched.

New Scrabble Words Make You Fear For English

LOLZ, SHIZZLE and cakehole are just three of 6,500 new words to have made it into the Scrabble lexicon. The new additions to the Collins Scrabble word list draw heavily from social media slang and text-speak and include obvs (obviously), ridic (ridiculous) and dench (excellent). Other new words in the list reflect modern society, trends and events, such as twerking, devo (short for devolution, as in Devo Max), vape (to inhale from an electric cigarette), onesie, shootie (fashionable shoe that covers the ankle), cakeages (restaurant charges levied for serving cake brought in from outside), and podiumed (often used at sporting events, particularly the Olympics). The new word list also recognises the role technology continues to play in our lives with the addition of facetime, hashtag, tweep, and sexting. Onomatopoeic interjections listed in the dictionary are allowed in Scrabble and now players can add exclamations such as augh, blech, eew, grr, waah and yeesh to their game. Some of the highest-scoring new words are quinzhee (29 points - an Inuit snow shelter) and schvitz (24 points - to sweat).

Be very careful of the knock on the door. I was horrified to read in the newspaper recently of a lady who had experienced a burglary to be told – as there was no violence involved – she was not covered at all. I despair – the number of times I speak on the radio, also mention in my articles and plus the consultants are always informing people that there are policies that unbelievably do not cover you for theft without violence or a restricted amount laid down by the company on your contents. I realise I have spoken about this many times, that being persuaded that a cheaper price does not mean a difference in the cover (what about Accidental Damage?). Here I go again, a lower price alone does not buy you full cover. Please take care, in gaining €50 on a policy, you could stand to lose thousands. Another ongoing situation, especially in the Renewal Department, is when clients request postponement or time out on their car policies, because they are either in the UK or the car is off the road, for various reasons. Sorry there are no reasons for any vehicle not to be insured for the full year. It is a requirement of Spanish law and could have extremely serious consequences. For example, the theft of a vehicle, which is then involved in an accident with possible serious injury – the owner would be totally responsible. If it caught fire, again causing any damage to property or persons, the owner would be liable, and on top of that would be prosecuted for having no insurance. So I ask the question, is it worth saving a small amount of money with all this potential risk? With the start of the holiday season, if you are going to Egypt, Morocco or Tunisia, particularly as part

of a Mediterranean cruise, please ensure you check that you are correctly covered on your travel insurance. Some European policies no longer include these countries as part of Europe, so ensure that you are fully informed before travelling. A new EU directive that Spain has adopted, states that if a husband or wife dies, and they have children, whilst resident in Spain, unless there is a new updated will, a third will automatically go to the children. I am sure that you would be happy to leave your house and investments to your children, but not until both of you have left this world. The only way to protect each other from this happening is to take out a new will. This change comes into operation on August 17th 2015, and I can assure you, if you haven´t organised this, then potentially things could become much more complicated and in my own words – a nightmare. I was amazed when I learnt from a salesman that he was not only selling funeral insurance door to door, but also health insurance. A funeral insurance plan, when you are living in Spain, in my opinion is extremely necessary. Therefore it is not surprising that companies will take advantage of this and go door to door, but please take care if you are persuaded to take it over monthly payments, you could be shocked to discover the high interest rate charges. However, I am disconcerted to hear that this method of selling is being used for health insurance. Having sold health insurance for years, the complex and confidential information that would be required is not something that should be discussed with someone on

your doorstep. It takes years of experience to have the knowledge in discovering and declaring the pre –existing conditions that will have a fundamental effect on the policy, and could have long term implications when claiming. My advice is to close the door and if you require health insurance, then contact a company that is well known and established, preferably with offices where you can talk to a professional. Health insurance is very personal, extremely confidential and the sales person needs a vast amount of knowledge to offer the best service to the client. Once again, the plan that my company sells, as far as I am concerned, is the best. It has an extensive support network, the best doctors, consultants and hospitals that are available, guaranteed for life, and the age you join is the age you stay. IN RECENT years we have seen many clients and readers, especially the expatriate community in Spain, being miss-sold all kinds of complex financial products or investments, without having received necessary and accurate information from financial institutions, banks, financial advisors, etc. Even today, we still find many people who bought these products, which can be described as toxic, and in many cases, they only discover the problems with their investment when they try to get their money back and cannot. One class of the investment products that is a continual source of problems to consumers, is Preference Shares or Preferential Participations or Preferred Stock, ( Participaciones Preferentes), which are perpetual, and in most cases were sold as a normal deposit, which is simply not true, because in most cases the owners cannot sell them, and cannot

get back their investment. Most Spanish banks and Building Societies sold them, like La Caixa, Bankia, BBVA, Banco Santander, Novacaixagalicia, Mare Nostrum Group, CAM, Catalunyacaixa, Banca Civica, Banco Sabadell, Banco Popular, EFFibank, Banesto, Bankinter, Unnim, Banco Pastor, BBK Bank CajaSur, etc. Fortunately, most Spanish Courts, including our Province Court of Alicante, usually grant court orders in favor of consumers, when it is proved to the court that they were not properly informed about the potential risks of the investment, or no suitability test was done in order to determine whether it was a suitable product, etc. Thus, in most cases, it is understood that consumers have agreed to buy the preference shares, without really knowing what they were buying as they were not informed properly, and therefore, their consent is not valid, and without consent the purchase contract of the product must be declared null and void.

Is it time to update your savings and investments?

ACCORDING TO the Daily Mail Savers have £450 billion stuck in dinosaur savings and investment plans, millions are stuck with policies bought decades ago and which are no longer fit for purpose. TODAY, THE returns they offer are rotten. Could this be you? Have you just let your financial planning take a back seat? Well now is the time to act and make your money work for you. Savings accounts and cash ISA´s Banks and building societies across the UK and the Banks in Spain have again slashed the interest rates they are offering on savings accounts and cash Isa´s, Lloyds, Halifax , Sabadell to name just a few. The rates they are offering now are between 0% and if you are very lucky 0.75%. If a Bank, especially in Spain is offering more than this please be wary, the product they are offering will most probably be a structured product, though they often looked like a normal savings deal, these are based they were based on stock market performance. They usually offer a variety of these ranging from no risk, through low, medium to high risk.

With the no risk ones the return you get will depended on either the FTSE or Euro STOXX 50 hitting a number of targets over a set time — usually five years. They are sold as ‘guaranteed’ bonds, because if the stock market failed to do well, you are always going to get back the original money you put in. But in most cases the return on these has been minimal and you would have been better putting your money in a low risk tax efficient investment product. SHARE ISA´S Not only are these not tax efficient if you are a Spanish tax resident, with most of the older style share ISA´s if you wanted to invest your Isa savings, you generally had to go directly to the investment management group running the fund. This meant upfront charges of as much as 5 per cent and annual running fees of 1.75 per cent or more. For the

first £1,000 invested, that’s £67.50 taken in one swipe. If you wanted to have investments in two different funds, you had to have accounts with two different companies. This made it a mammoth task to keep on top of your investments, as they were all in different places. And if your fund stopped performing, it could take months to move to a different provider. There is around £75 billion lurking in these oldfashioned fund manager Isa accounts, according to industry calculations. But you don’t need to leave your money languishing in this way. It should be relatively straightforward to move your money out of one of these outdated Isa accounts and into a tax efficient investment. Spanish tax returns season THE TIME has come again for submitting tax returns for the period of 2014, with the deadline being 30th June 2015. Most people who are employed in Spain, either on contract or self-employment pay their taxes every three months and it normally means that no further payments are required. However if the tax office decides that an underpayment has been made, and then request further funds the amount to be paid can be split into two payments. The first being due on 30th June and the second on the 5th November. It is advisable to ensure your tax return is filed at the latest on 25th June to allow for any direct debits to be set up for additional payments. Income tax in Spain is a direct tax levied on the income of residents, know as “la renta” it is normally submitted once a year and includes salaries, interest received from pensions and any income derived from

properties and investments. This is not limited to what is earned in Spain but the individuals worldwide income. If the income has already been taxed in another country foreign tax credits can be used to avoid double taxation. Under Spanish law, individuals are considered as resident for taxation purposes if they spend more than 183 day a year in the country, or if their business is based in Spain. Even if you do not have a residency certificate you are considered resident, for tax purposes, if you and/or your family reside in Spain for more than 183 days of the year. For those who have simple tax affairs, the most popular way of completing the return is by requesting a “borrador” (draft) tax declaration. Automatically generated by the tax office’s systems the draft contains details of employment, bank and other details and calculates what is to be paid. However this

draft excludes income from outside of Spain such as state pensions. In summary as a resident, for tax purposes, you need to file a return for 2014 if: You are in legal employment, if your income is under €22,000 from one source it is not mandatory but you may find that there are allowances you were not aware of. If your Income, say from a pension, is less than €11,200 you do not need to declare it unless you have more than one source of income and the second and subsequent incomes exceed €1,500. Two pensions

would count as two sources of income even though you add them together on your declaration. If you have investments providing more than €1,600 you must declare this, if your total income from all sources is less than €1,000 there is no need to make a declaration. As a self employed person or running a business a declaration must be made irrespective of the income. Most people use a local Gestoria, who for a small charge will submit the tax declaration on your behalf.

Forecasts indicate that more than two hundred athletes from all over Spain will be participating in this important competition. There will be many different categories from Masters Bodybuilding, Bodybuilding, over 60â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s to U-18 (youth) and Classic Bodybuilding, Body Fitness, Bikini Fitness, Bodybuilding for Couples, etc. Activities start tonight, Friday evening at 6.30pm, when the weighing and sizing of all categories takes place in the official Hotel of competition, at Cabo Cervera in La Mata. The competition starts early on Saturday at 09.30am, with the sessions happening through to the semifinal stage. Gardening in spain is great for the retired - Part one

INTRODUCTION IN SPITE of the down turn in the economy and the bad press created by some unethical practices Spain is a great place to retire to especially if you have a current interest or potential interest in making your villa, village house or apartment more attractive and productive. The climate and exceptional variety of plants that can be grown with the warmth of Spain and often 300 days of clear blue skies will enthral any gardener but there are major challenges to be overcome in creating sub tropical gardens of Eden from scratch . Particularly the problems created by maximum temperatures in the forties, minimum temperatures below zero, high humidities, heavy clay soils, long periods of drought and the increasing number of imported risky plants. The solution is to follow the guidelines below. We had to learn the hard way. There is no reason for you to do the same. DESIGN YOUR GARDEN AND APARTMENT TERRACES TO MATCH YOUR PLANNED OR EMERGENT LIFESTYLE, AGING PHYSIQUE AND ENERGY LEVELS AND THE REAL CLIMATE a. Design your garden to match the lifestyle you expect/ plan to have in Spain, the level of your interest in gardening and your current and potential level of fitness. If gardening is of no interest, you plan to have no time for gardening or are chronically unhealthy then decide to employ a gardener or purchase a smaller property than you perhaps envisaged. b. Recognise that the benefits of gardening as a hobby are useful exercise, heathy crops, a scenic and spiritual environment in which to live, entertain and provide holidays for family and friends.

c. If you have opted for an apartment ensure that you develop attractive, colourful and productive outside living spaces by maximising the use of terraces, balconies and windowsills. d. Ensure that trees are preserved and planted, and climber covered gazeboes constructed, to give summer shade for lunches and siestas and that evergreen boundary and internal hedges are planted to provide sheltered corners for the more delicate plants and in which to enjoy the healthy winter sun. awnings and blinds are essential on open and covered terraces. e. Take things carefully until you have acclimatised to the Spanish climates and built up your physical fitness and

stamina. This may take a couple of years. During the summer work in the cool early morning and cooling off late evening and during the coldest winter days work during the warmer mid day hours. Adapt to the Spanish customs of wearing a straw hat, having a mid afternoon siesta and dining late. f. You probably told yourself that you have come to Spain or are going to consider moving to Spain for a more relaxed, less stressful and healthier life. So donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t try and complete a new garden or change an existing garden in a few months when it could provide a five or ten year fulfilling hobby. We are still fine tuning our garden after twenty five years to make it more pleasurable, productive and reduce itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s maintenance as we have several other regular pastimes to keep up. Loyalty points mean charity prizes CUSTOMERS OF family supermarket chain Pepe La Sal donated 825 euros of ‘loyalty points’ to support Teulada Moraira Lions Club and its drive to keep food on the tables of families hit by the recession.

by Jack Troughton The supermarket was already a staunch supporter of the Lions’ food voucher scheme and recently gave customers the option of gifting their loyalty card scheme points to the charity rather than claiming a discount on their shopping bill. Pepe La Sal first helped the club get its food voucher scheme on the road almost eight years ago – helping it be extended last year to include Benitachell. And the supermarket’s support has grown over time to include donations of fresh and frozen food nearing its ‘sell-by date’, the Lions using the expertise of Caritas to insure it gets to where it is most needed. Keep Fit With ADAPT

THIS MONTH the ADAPT Ramblers took in the beautiful scenery around the Embalse de la Pedrera, also known as The Blue Lake, near the little town of Torremendo. Group leader, Pete Holmes, arranged the meeting at the Casa La Pedrera which is a television ‘Grand Designs’ house, owned by Jenni and Derek Ray. Jenni was our guide for the very interesting walk through very pretty scenery,but a little challenging in parts. We were accompanied by Jenni´s dogs who had great fun dipping in the water and chasing rabbits. Twenty six ADAPT members took part in the 9 kilometer trek which took about two and a half hours with a couple of stops to re-group. It was a hot day and so we fully deserved the cold drinks and scones at the end of the walk. The Rambling Group is just one of many groups within ADAPT Association and everyone is invited to attend the next meeting which will be ADAPT OPEN DAY at The Pensionista Hogar in Lo Pagán on Saturday 6th June from 10:30am. One night only for Oklahoma SUCH HAS been the demand for Studio 32’s production of Oklahoma that just a few tickets are still available for the opening night; Thursday June 4th. by Keith Nicol The show is being performed at the Cardenal Belluga Theatre, San Fulgencio with doors open at 7.00pm and curtain up at 7.30pm. The beneficiaries from the shows are La Asociación de Alzhéimer de San Fulgencio, various local charities and the Cardenal Bulluga Theatre. 17-year-old Verity Jo Spencer Hall is playing the lead female role of Laurey. Verity is one of the leading lights in the summer spectacular musical “Oklahoma” with her development going from singing in her bedroom, to producing songs that have maturity and quality beyond her years. In 2013, she achieved good dancing grades with ‘Footwork Dance’ in Los Montesinos and after seeing the musical ‘Wicked’ in London, she decided on a stage career after family and friends knew she had the talent after hearing her singing numbers from shows like “ Phantom” and “Les Miserables”. On learning that Studio 32 were auditioning for the cast of “Oklahoma”, she applied, and the selection board were so

impressed with her voice, attractiveness and stage presence that she was offered the leading lady role of Laurey in the show. Since then she has participated in the making of two local films, ‘The Cucaracha Club’ and ‘Trained to Kill’ and is also working with a well known local choir, which goes towards fulfilling of her ambition to be a West End performer. The cast of Oklahoma includes Aunt Eller: Jenni HardyRoony, Laurey: Verity Jo Spencer Hall, Ado Annie: Bev McEwan, Curly: Rae Daniels, Ike Skidmore: Don Wilkinson (speaking part) and Adrian Boardman (singing), Will Parker: Mark Lord, Jud Fry: Dan Ulah, Ali Hakim: Mike Oates, Andrew Carnes: Bob Lear and Cord Elam: Thomas Mudd. Combined Male Voice Choirs In Concert

THE HIGHLY successful Orihuela Costa Male Voice Choir will be joined by the Costa Blanca Male Voice Choir from Denia in a joint concert at La Zenia church this Sunday 31st May. The Orihuela Costa Choir recently hosted the Military Wives Choir from the UK to rave reviews and, with the 35+ men from Denia, will number over 60 voices. La Zenia church, well known for its amazing acoustics, will truly shake with the power and beauty of this many trained men’s voices. THE DANCE troupe ‘La Sal de Torrevieja’ are busy preparing for a new musical revue. The event has a Spanish theme, is presented by Transformista Yeray and comes direct to Torrevieja from the famous El Molino Benidorm for a one night only performance on Saturday June 13th, at 9:30pm in the Municipal Theatre. Like last year, the direction, choreography and interpretation are borne by local dancers Marta Martinez and Domingo Sánchez, who is also well known for his Michael Jackson impersonations. During the last six months they have taught 34 girls in the troupe many different routines, combining parades, performances and trips overseas, representing Torrevieja in such countries as Romania, France and Italy. The costume is designed with exclusive creations that contain rhinestones, feathers, crystals and all kinds of clothing that will accompany each musical number, with a wide array of lighting, music and choreography. The director of La Sal de Torrevieja, Conchita Mercader, was delighted with the performances from the troupe in which covers different areas of Spanish dance; folklore, popular songs, tango and rancheras with alternate numbers containing elements of humour and she has not ruled out offering it to promoters to take the show on tour to other cities. David Bustamante rocks Torry SPANISH Pop superstar David Bustamente returned to Torrevieja on Saturday and literally had everyone dancing in the aisles. by Keith Nicol

One by one he reeled off songs from his latest album “Live” and also performed a heartbreaking cover of Frank Sinatra’s “My Way”. The Municipal Theatre had the full house signs outside once again for the concert of Cantabrian singer David Bustamante, who is on tour with his latest album “Live”. Unusually, the concert started right on time and did not wait for late audience members to find their seats. The lights dimmed, the orchestra began to play and the singer jumped on stage which immediately attracted a hoard of fans to the front of the stage Bustamante was in great voice, full of energy and showed to one and all that he is in the prime of his career. Along with Rosa and David Bisball, he is one of the new generation of Spanish pop stars who is constantly in demand for both touring and TV appearances. He sang songs from his latest album, such as “need”, “lie”, “I repent” and “Live”, some of which he [erfromed from behind the keyboard. He has rearranged and reinvented

older songs, such as “coward”, which he has covered in style with the addition of a touch more swing that significantly improves the song, “Never too late” is more rocker than ever and “Two men and a destiny”, had everyone in audience signing along with him The band was held together with electric guitar, played by Marc Quintillá, who had a special role with solos on songs like “I repent”. Charlie Moreno was on bass, giving special force to the rhythmic songs. Xavi Reija on drums laid down the beat and in charge of all this, Jesus Lavilla, musical director and pianist, accompanied the artist in the most intimate moments. The concert ended as it began, with the audience on their feet and singing along. The most moving moment of the evening was his heartbreaking version of Frank Sinatra’s ‘My Way’, which he only sings live on stage, and not on TV or on recordings. The concert was fun, entertaining and very well received by his fans. As he started strongly, also he finished with energy and finished the night filled with applause, shouts and cheers.

Choirs in tune with charity THE COSTA BLANCA Male Voice Choir hit a high note to end its summer season with a Teulada concert– raising over 1,000€ for nominated charity, single parent support group Guardian Angels. An audience at the Salon de Actos were thrilled with a performance by the choir and the singers of special guest L’Alfaz Canta. The male voice choir’s choice of music and the choral programme chosen by the Spanish group blended perfectly and a special treat was the captivating sight of flamenco dancing. VALLEY VOICES, the popular Parcent-based choir, has completed a busy schedule of concerts ending with an evening packed with music at the church in Orba. The choir was joined for a highly successful performance by Cor Orba – Spanish group – and the talented duo Cadenza. The choirs sang their hearts out in front of an appreciative audience and performed a rich variety of music, including numbers from the musicals and a Native American medley from the Spanish singers. Valley Voices is now rehearsing new material ready for next year at a gentler pace and also planning a summer party, before taking a well-earned rest in July. The choir will be back in autumn to start practicing again for a new season, also rehearsing Christmas songs for the festive season. Valley voice is a social and friendly choir and is always ready to welcome new members, especially men, who enjoy singing. My wife and I retired to Spain five years ago, and now she wants to go back to the UK. She says she misses the grandchildren too much. I hoped, after I explained to her that we can’t afford to move back, that she would change her mind. She also seems to think that our now teenage grandchildren will want to be in our lives more. She is adamant about the move, and is now threatening divorce if we don’t. It might be a good idea to spend a few weeks in the UK, and explore the costs involved in relocating, so that your wife knows the financial implications. You could find yourselves with money difficulties if you move, and that is something you definitely don’t want at your time of life. It’s only natural that your wife is missing the family, but remember that your grandchildren are grown now, and have their own lives. Also, if your wife is talking divorce, some couples counselling might help you both resolve these issues.

Excluded grandchild My wife and I adopted our Chinese daughter four years ago. Our little girl is the light of our lives. The problem is that we have suspected for some time now that my parents don’t love her like their other grandchildren. There were a few incidents, which I have tried to brush off in the past, but now our daughter is noticing that her cousins are receiving better presents, and better treatment. My wife is very upset. I talked to my sister about it, and she agrees with me that Mum and Dad are not treating our daughter in the same way. This is a very sad situation, because there is an innocent child involved here. You must speak to you parents. Remain calm, and don’t go in accusing them of anything - just point out the facts. It might be a good idea to take your sister along for moral support. Bring these discrepancies to their attention, and ask them if they are aware that they treat their blood grandchildren more favourably. Write to Sara in confidence. If there´s somebody who really does know what fame is like its Reginald Dwight, a lad who went to school in Pinner in the 60´s and ended up being knighted Sir Elton John in 1998. Like the regular guy he is Reggie attended his class reunion last week saying “I haven’t seen many of them for 50 years! It was as if we´ve never left school. Share the Love.” Top Geezer!

Simon’s getting out of Space to have more Space! Simon Pegg was born in Blockworth in Gloucestershire, and aged just 27 got a small part in a film and has evolved in the movie business over the last 17 years into an actor, writer, producer and director. His development includes playing Scotty in the last two of the Star Trek movies, and whilst being interviewed by the Radio Times about his new movie ´Man Up´ he launched an unexpected attack on the world of Science Fiction in the cinema. “I’m very much a self-confessed fan of science-fiction in the cinema,” he said “but I think we’ve been infantilised by our own taste, we’re essentially consuming very childish things – comic books, superheroes, adults are watching this stuff, and taking it seriously!” a pretty hefty attack I´m sure you´ll agree, but he wasn´t done yet, “It´s a kind of dumbing down because it’s taking our focus away from real-world issues. Films used to be challenging, now all we´re thinking about is the fact that the Hulk just had a fight with a robot,” powerful stuff indeed, which suggests him playing Scotty again to be highly unlikely. I´ve enjoyed Simon Pegg´s work for many a year and confess to being surprised by him being in the Star Trek movies as his style is very much a radical one, with extremely dark humour more his bag, like the part of William Burke in ´Burke and Hare’ in 2010, a comedic account of the Edinburgh grave robbers. Getting back to his interview with There´s a live TV show in America called the Radio Times when asked about ´Watch What Happens´ and knowing they the future Simon said, “I miss grown would get something madcap they invited up things and would quite like to go Snoop Dogg on last week, and he didn´t off and do some serious acting.” That disappoint. Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin

Possessive adjectives Vice Consul WE SEEM to be having quite a good run on the “little words” which students have told me over the years are what trouble them most. TO BE honest, some of the little words in Spanish don’t even bear thinking about, and we have had a glimpse of those with our direct and indirect pronouns, but there are others that are really quite friendly. As far as I remember we haven’t looked very much at possessive adjectives so that is our mission for today. We have seen before that adjectives are words that describe - such as, big, green, interesting. So we can say: “The big book”, “the green book”, “the interesting book”. We can also describe something in terms of who it belongs to – “my book”. Therefore the word “my” has the same function as “big”, “green” or “interesting” and is called a “possessive adjective”. In English these words do not change, so I would say “my book” or “my books”. However, in Spanish as we know, adjectives change to agree in number (singular or plural) and gender (masculine or feminine) with whatever they are describing, and the same thing happens with possessive adjectives. We also learnt before that some adjectives (those that end in “o” in the masculine singular) make four possible changes, (e.g. bueno, buena, buenos, buenas) whilst others (those that end in any other letter in the masculine singular) only make two changes – for singular and plural (grande, grandes) With possessive adjectives the same principle applies, so “mi” (my) can only change to “mis” for the plural. “Mi

libro” (my book) “mis libros” (my books). The same change happens with “tu” (your - singular familiar form) “tu libro” (your book) “tus libros” (your books) and “su” which can mean “his”, “her”, “your” (usted version) and also “their” and “your” (ustedes version). All those ideas are expressed by “su” or “sus” – with the one change relating to what is possessed (e.g. one book, or more than one book). Hopefully that point is reasonably clear, but it is important to realize that these changes work completely differently from English, where the changes (e.g. his, her, their) relate to the person possessing, not what is possessed. When we come to the words for “our” and “your” (that is “your” when the possessor is in the familiar plural form), we come across two adjectives that end in the letter “o”, namely “nuestro” and “vuestro”. Again, following the usual adjective rules, these words can make four changes. Therefore we would say “nuestro coche” (our car) “nuestra casa” (our house), “nuestros coches” (our cars) “nuestras casas” (our houses). Likewise “vuestro, vuestra, vuestros and vuestras” are the four familiar plural possessive adjectives. So, for example, if I was talking to a couple who were friends and saying something about their children, I would refer to them as “vuestros hijos”. If this imaginary couple only had daughters and not sons I would say “vuestras hijas”. Maybe this makes some sense, but as ever needs plenty of practice!

On Parade In Orihuela Costa LLOYD MILEN was the guest speaker at the May meeting of the Orihuela Costa Branch of the Royal British Legion held in Mil Palmeras last Thursday evening. Lloyd is, of course, the Vice Consul, at the British Consulate in Alicante. Rather fittingly, although the arrangement had been made some weeks ago, Lloyd had recently assumed the role of RBL (District North Spain) President and his visit to the Orihuela Costa was his first to a local branch since assuming the appointment. However, his presentation to the members focused very much on the role played by the British Consulate in this part of Spain. He spoke of how the Consulate already works closely with the RBL, dealing with those British nationals in need of Legion help and support. He also spoke of his contact within the much wider Spanish Community and how he is continually meeting with mayors, councillors and officials to promote the integration in Spain of the 160,000 British nationals registered on local padrons. He refused to be drawn on questions relating to the forthcoming referendum on EU Membership, and what might happen should the UK pull out, saying that it really was uncharted territory, but he confirmed that governmental policy was very much that the country remains within the Union, albeit on rather different terms. Following the lecture Branch Chairman Keith Carter thanked Lloyd for attending the meeting and concluded by presenting the new President with a Branch Certificate of Appreciation.

Javea inspires JAVEA ART gallery Artefactus features the work of three talented international artists inspired by the town in its June exhibition. by Jack Troughton Madrid-based artist Beatriz de Bartolome, a Queen Sofia award-winner for painting and sculpture, joins two residents of the town in showing off their work – Welsh painter Bronwyn Cayley and ceramic artist Brigitte Schemmel, from Germany. Beatriz is showing her latest work ‘Infinite Instances’ – or Instantes Infintitos – focussing on water and mainly painted in water colours. And Bronwyn contributes ‘Temenos’, a creative collection of paintings inspired by several well-known artists including Paul Klee; Kandinsky; and Alan Davies. Finally, Brigitte’s imagination has run wild in a series of ceramics characterised by an unusual imagination. Artefactus Espai d’Art, Arquitecture i Artefactus, is found in Javea Old Town at Calle Mestre Angel Palencia No 6 and the exhibition opens at 7.30pm on Friday 5th June and continues until 27th June.

Feeding the hungry

MEMBERS OF the Rotary International Fellowship of Denia has donated 350€ to help the less fortunate in the community. The money was donated to ‘Extiende Tu Mano’, a charity running and providing food at the ‘comedor social’ dining room in Denia. The money was raised by a collection when Rotarians met to celebrate the Denia Fellowship’s 150th meeting. Dick Dokter (right) and accompanied by Lolita Weber and Ove Wittstock – both founder members of the club - made the presentation to Pedro Garrido Perez.

TWELVE INDEPENDENT Marina Alta charities will benefit from the Summer Garden Party being held at the Los Arcos Restaurant at Pedregeur on Saturday 6th June between 12.30pm to 16.30pm. The second fund raiser in the beautiful gardens of the restaurant and again promises to be a fun family afternoon out – with magician Ian Oogly from Cheeky Monkey Entertainers Performing. Children will also enjoy a treasure hunt, games, face painting, and a bake off in the special kids’ area. Adults can browse 40 stalls selling gifts and homemade products and a holistic area with massage, manicure, and other treatments. Radio station Total FM will be broadcasting and introducing entertainment to the stage. There will also be a giant tombola and an ‘auction of promises’. The Los Arcos staff will be preparing giant paella – and there is a chance to see the preparation of this iconic dish from start to mouthwatering finish. The organizers hope to attract a large number of visitors to the garden party looking to support a community event, and there is ample parking available.

Walk on the wild side ARTISTS JAN Calderwood and Anne Kerr are staging an exhibition in Denia from Thursday 18th June celebrating the beauty and energy of both the natural world and dance. by Jack Troughton The friends, who are also art teachers and hold classes on the Costa Blanca, have invited everyone to the preview party between 6pm and 9pm and will be there to welcome guests to Denia’s Casa de Cultura. The exhibition runs until Friday 3rd July and will interest everyone who enjoys flamenco, wildlife and colour. The subjects are varied: animals, landscapes, seascapes, flamenco and ballet. There are oils, watercolours, silk painting and pastels on show. Opening hours of the exhibition are 11am to 2pm and 5pm to 9pm Monday to Friday, and 11am to 1.30pm and 6pm to 9pm on Saturdays. The Casa de Cultura is the green building between the Monday market area and nearby Mercadona, just off Plaza Jaume I, the large roundabout square with tall palm trees at the centre. Fly across the US of A

A NEW cabaret show ‘On USA Tour’ – produced by Carol Levey and Dawn Blyth - is about to touch down in the Costa Blanca. Two flights across North America have been organised as the cabaret is performed at the Gran Sol Hotel, Calpe, on Saturday 6th June and the Inn on the Green, Javea, on Saturday 13th June. Passengers will be greeted at the door by the ‘Virginon-the-Ridiculous’ air hostesses, captain and flight crew, and will be given boarding passes and shown to tables marked as different US states. As the show flies across the country from California to New York City, in-flight entertainment will be provided by the crew – insuring a first-class trip with songs and dances representing the numerous stop-over’s. Pop-up websites DEAR AUNTY: My problem is that every time I go to a website of my choice another website loads alongside it, mainly sites with advertising. I run Firefox as my web browser and have tried ad-block plus, malwarebytes, and c/cleaner all to no avail. Any suggestions? You may find an addon that is installed that may be causing the problems. Disable and uninstall. Restart Firefox. Alternatively you can simply reset Firefox to its default state, which usually fixes most problems. Click the menu button and then click Help From the Help menu choose Troubleshooting Information If you’re unable to access the Help menu, type about:support in your address bar to bring up the Troubleshooting information page Click the Reset Firefox… button in the upper-right corner of the Troubleshooting Information page To continue, click Reset Firefox in the confirmation window that opens Firefox will close and be reset. When it’s done, a window will list the information that was imported. Click Finish and Firefox will open. It may also be an idea to go to Control Panel and Programs and have a look to see if there have been any “rogue” programs installed recently that may be causing the problem. Most of these issues are installed when people simply use the “default” installation method when installing software, particularly “free” software. The default installation options usually install more than you want, like tool bars, or advertising code. So always use the “expert” or “custom” install methods, as this will usually give you the options not to install these “rogues”.

Horoscopes Mars and Pluto are to blame for the pressure that you have been under just lately. A firm and durable bond has been applied to something that begs the very maximum of leeway if it is to work with any success. As you breathe a sigh of relief there comes a time to rebuild and consolidate with a view to some sweeping changes. As someone who will always rise to a challenge you have really made the most of a situation which now needs some tender love and care to see it through. As there has been a recent shuffle, and because you came out of it very well, there is a new investment in your intrinsic abilities and you will now be fully backed and all the way. Mercury’s take on of Neptune advises financial scrutiny and some sage and sensible economies are advised. As you tighten your belt it is wise to say that you are facing the problem hands on; but there is an economical focus on somebody along the line who is not pulling their weight, and this must be addressed ASAP. As the phases of the Moon advocate change for a better future, the roots of this can, and will, start sooner rather than later. The time has come to pool resources and to eliminate any fear in a process that begs to perform with expertise and stealth to bring about a good result. There is only one bottom line and it will be achieved at all costs. Actions with the Sun amplify this week as Mercury, Ceres and Neptune focus on illumination and reveal. You have put your cards on the table and it is clear to see that your adaptability is sought in the current scheme of things. It is just as if there is something up your sleeve, something rather wonderful you know will assist. You are in a challenging situation but in true style you have adapted to what must be, and taken something very negative with the pinch of salt that it truly deserves. No, no regrets! WE ARE all instinctively driven to do what we have to do. True we can look back on what we did do and wonder why we did it, and often there will be no reason, but we are spurred on by a range of circumstances. If we look back on life what choices did we make? What chances did we take? Who did we meet? I look back on my life, so far, and there are memories of things that I did, that horrify me now. This is because in my maturity, or knowing now what I didn’t know then; things could have been very different. But this may have changed many plausible things that were out there in my destiny, things that just had to happen to me for my life to take the direction that it did. It is so easy to be wise after the event, always. It is also difficult to admit that you made a mistake, but you like me, dear reader, will have undoubtedly made several. What I do not have, and what I have eliminated, is any regret. This may be because I am stubborn enough to have turned my back on what I had to, and trusted in my instinct to embrace that which I knew that I had to. I have never ever been a “ should have, would have, could have “ type of person. Hence I regret absolutely nothing and never will. “Aha!” You say, but it is widely known that I had spiritual guidance to help me all along the way, and yes, this is my secret, allbeit one that I readily share. Spirit has made such a difference to my life, and this could be why I promote it freely at every opportunity that I get. I am still immersed in the instinctive power that is my sheer destiny, and still free to go against my gut feelings; which I do at my own inevitable peril; but then I am Kenny, warts and all. I always have to be myself, and that means I am guided but

never led into whatever I do. Any regrets would be pointless, but above all I have lived a very interesting and open life. I can regret nothing because Spirit always closely guided me to where I had to be, and that was never wrong, though it has brought me challenge and heartache and indecision along with the ups and downs that I had to experience and did. If anybody thinks that my past destiny has been nicely tucked away in a file marked, “Safe” then it was never about that. I am happy with what I have done, and I am spellbound as to what I have left to do, what I will do and whether I have the time left to do it. If you still have unanswered questions then you are connected to the life force and you will always do whatever you can. Spirit has lifted me up and exalted me and they have dropped me well and truly down there into the challenge of life. They are always right, and although I know that I haven’t always done what was best, or right or what I should have. Am I bothered? Often I did now know why a certain action led to what it did, but I soon found out, usually the hardest way. It was wrong, but it seemed right to me at the time. My destiny says therefore it was meant to be and has become a part of my life. I guess if I wasn’t so stubborn that I may have fallen over, even on this, my spiritual journey of life; and not have been able to pick myself up. Luckily if I couldn’t pick myself up, and this was truly rare, then somebody was sent to do the job and when this did ever happen they did it, and did it very well. I realise that I have been lucky. I thank Spirit for the great difference that they have made, and I question what they have in store for me now, all things considered!

Protecting your skin and keeping hydrated for the summer

AS THE temperatures rise nicely here on the Costa Blanca and more of us are shedding the layers of clothing it is important to remember to look after our skin. by Jeanette Rice Summer means sun, shorts, sandals, swimming costumes, and bronzed skin. But with beach hair and shorter hemlines comes the dangers that not only instigate the probability of skin cancer, but the ageing process as well. Sun exposure is, essentially, subjecting yourself to sun damage – but, avoiding the outdoors altogether is both impractical and nearly impossible. Therefore, taking preventative measures in preparing and caring for it are crucial in keeping your skin in tiptop condition. Sun exposure isn’t necessarily bad – it is a key source of Vitamin D. As with all good things, however, keep exposure in moderation. The ideal maximum is 15 minutes before 10 am. or after 2 pm. Anything above is considered overexposure, and any exposure during midday – when the sun is at its harshest – should be limited (if not altogether avoided). Even when it is cloudy it is possible to damage your skin with the suns rays. You can help your skin, not only from the dangers of skin cancer but also the ageing effects by ensuring that you use a high sun screen block

and moisturisers during the summer months. Applying moisturiser with SPF is essential, but with the onset of warmer weather, consider switching your current moisturiser for another with higher SPF and lighter formulation to prevent sun spots, freckles, and early signs of ageing. Staying hydrated is also vital for your health as well as your skin. Most say that you should drink 8 glasses of water a day and some experts recommend more. Whilst it is important to drink as much water as possible it can be difficult if you are not much of a water drinker. Approximately 20 percent of our daily water intake comes from solid foods, particularly fruit and vegetables. So although you should still ensure you drink plenty of water you can also quench your thirst with foods that are 90 percent of water by weight. Good foods for this are: oranges, cucumber, iceberg lettuce, celery, radishes, tomatoes, green peppers, cauliflower, water melon, spinach, strawberries, broccoli, grapefruit, and baby carrots.

Nobody expects the suicide inquisition THE SOFT underbelly of the Edwardian upper middle class is fatally exposed in JB Priestley’s darkly entertaining ‘An Inspector Calls’ and congratulations to Careline Theatre for bringing it to a Costa Blanca stage. by Jack Troughton

The classic play is set in 1912 – the year the unsinkable Titanic foundered on her maiden voyage – and the storyline features the good ship ‘Looking After Number One’ and its collision course with an iceberg of social responsibility. A mysterious Inspector Goole – critics since its first outing in 1945 have referred to him as ‘Ghoul’ – arrives to interview ‘suspects’ – he claims to have the diary of one Eva Smith who has killed herself by drinking strong disinfectant - and by ingenious questioning exposes the frailties of a well-to-do family...at the same rather spoiling a white tie engagement celebration. It is assumed he is a policeman but can be almost seen as an avenging angel and he reveals each of five characters’ part in the sad downfall of Eva aka Daisy aka Mrs Birling. In the aftermath of his visit, the older members of the ‘accused’ Birling family quickly forget the lessons of their involvement with the doomed girl once the Inspector is exposed as a fake detective – the younger ones accept their responsibility. However, the resumed party is cut short when a real inspector calls.

CHALLENGE Careline’s show was the debut of Scott Hamer as a director and he made a decent fist of the play. Congratulations for making such a wordy piece of drawing room theatre both digestible and enjoyable. The historical challenge is making the dialogue appear natural and introducing movement into a static set, and on the whole he deserved a big ‘thumbs up’. Andy Headford-Lord made an intriguing Inspector Goole. The programme notes this was his fifth appearance in Careline colours and it was certainly his best yet. Like a top barrister going in for the kill; he charmed, he probed, and he damned. Teenager Tasha Fish put in a superbly mature performance as Sheila Birling, the eldest child of the Birling family and just engaged to Gerald Croft, uniting two industrial dynasties; she gave a lively performance of a young woman who could actually accept how a moment’s childish petulance actually pushed poor Eva further down the slippery slope. And it was a good day at the office for another youngster, Ashley Anderson, playing Sheila’s younger brother Eric

Birling. He is a drunkard, a ‘jack the lad’ and yet someone who tried to keep the dead woman’s head above water after finding he had made her pregnant – until she pushed him away realising the money he was supporting her with was stolen. Ashley obviously enjoyed the character part. Neil Carter as patriarch Arthur Birling, Marian Carter as his upper-crust wife Sybil, and Phillip Anderson as Gerald Croft, all gave a good account of themselves on stage, insuring An Inspector calls continues to intrigue.

Russian National team triumph at 29th International Benidorm Rugby Sevens La Vila Rugby Club´s new Stadium at Carretera del Pantano (Villajoyosa) provided the prefect setting on May 23 and 24 for the 29th Rugby Sevens Benidorm, staged and hosted by La Vila Rugby Club. The Villajoyosa based club were rewarded by a large attendance of rugby fans from far and wide who appreceiated the quality of rugby provided by the 16 teams who took part in this increasingly popular tournament. It´s an event now widely regarded as the premier Rugby 7s tournament in Spain. La Vila Club supported by an army of helpers who toil away each week building and strenghthening the club to its present high status in Spanish Rugby and beyond. As for the tournament itself there were 16 teams represented, mainly from Rusia, Scotland, England, Framce, kazajistan, Chile, Danemrak, Andorra, Belgium and Spain. Of the International section teams playing on Saturday, Rusia, Chile, Hawick Scotland, Impact 7s France, Bite bandits England, Bearnaise France and La Vila spain, all displayed good from to move into the next stage of their Gold Cup Competition. As a result of these games, Russia National Selection, Impact 7s Chile National selection and Bite Bandits competed for a place in the International Cup Final. These matches resulted in Rusia v Ipacts 7s won by Rusia 39-14 and Chile v Bandits, won by Chile for 36-0. As a result, the spectators, were rewarded with the Gold Cup Final clash betwen Rusia dn Chile national teams, the two best teams in the whole tournament. The moment that many of the spectators had awaited, arrived when Russia adn Chile took the field, in the final of the International section. A real battle had been expected betwen two specialists in the art of 7s rugby, but in a brilliant display, Russia beat Chile by 36-5. 1.500 euros prize money for the winners. 700 euros for the runners up. It was a view no doubt shared by many of those privileged to have been at the La Vila Rugby Stadium last weekend. The womens international section was won by Danemark National team versus Sevilla University by 40-0 . Next international event wil be sunday 7th June at Villajoyosa Stadium, from 11 am to 3 pm, 4 teams womens sevens, Sudbury Ladies form England, La Vila, Alicante and Valencia ladies. Free entrance. When is a golf club not a golf club? By Tony Myles THIS IS not a complicated riddle it is merely the fact that Campbell Lamont Golf is now a fully affiliated member of the Spanish Federation. Sin Campo - merely meaning that his is without a golf course. I can hear the collective sighs from those who have anticipated this for what must seem to be an interminable amount of time. It is one more indication of Campbell’s standing in the Spanish golfing community and, everyone who knows the Federation, will appreciate what a significant achievement it is. This organisation is multifaceted and so there is no simple dialogue or well trodden route to pursue. Campbell and his team have spent countless

hours sitting in meetings across Spain and have gained a comprehensive understand of how the system functions. This has been an essential learning curve as the Federation operates on a very fragmented basis with numerous local entities controlling their own division and operating under rules and regulations that can differ significantly from their neighbours. So what exactly does this mean? Here is what Campbell has to say “Many of our clients will be aware that with this we have secured a significant stage in one of my major ambitions. I want to deliver a total service to the golfing community and, in order to do so, I need to be able to manage areas such as handicap regulations and recording and I need a close working relationship with the governing body for the sport. There are currently well over 300,000 members of the Spanish Federation and I am hopeful that, through our efforts, we can see this number increase by the addition of several thousand CLG clients who currently may be unaware of the benefits that may be accrued from Federation membership.” So what are these benefits?

Campbell - Frank Carroll left us this week and with his passing we lost a great friend. For many years Frank Carroll was a vital member of our team and everyone who met him will remember him as a good spirited, kind hearted and enthusiastic individual. He was universally loved and respected and especially within the golfing community where he played a huge role. There was no one in Frank’s world who did not merit a warm smile from him irrespective of the time or the situation. To say he will be missed is a significant understatement.
