As Britain went to the polling stations, overseas voters allowed by law to play their part at the ballot box are being urged to complain to change a flawed system. And expats campaigning for full democratic rights for all UK citizens have already branded the failures “electoral fraud” or at best “gross incompetence”. The resulting chaos will leave red faces at the Electoral Commission which ran a high profile campaign to get expats still able to vote under the 15-year rule to register. As a result numbers on the electoral registers across the 650 constituencies soared from around 7,000 registered for last year’s European elections to nearly 114,000 people wanting a say in the UK’s future. However, with figures still being collected, it appears large numbers of people have effectively been disenfranchised in the so-called mother of modern democracies. The Electoral Commission has already promised an inquest but it already appears many voting papers were sent abroad with only UK postage paid – resulting in the documents arriving late or not at all. A spokesman for the Electoral Commission said: “Our guidance to electoral administrators is clear that postal votes sent to overseas electors should be prioritised to allow the maximum time for them to be returned. CONCERN “We are aware that some overseas voters have raised concerns that they are yet to receive their postal ballot packs and we will look very carefully at the evidence shared with us when we consider what issues to raise in our statutory election report which will be laid in the UK Parliament in the summer.” Continued on page 5.

Navy divers detonate old artillery shell in Villajoyosa A FISHING boat caught more than it expected when casting its nets in the waters of Villajoyosa on Sunday.

by Jeanette Rice The fishing boat crew, whilst gathering in their nets, soon realised that they had also caught an old artillery shell and cautiously returned to the port. The Guardia Civil and Navy were then notified and a safety perimeter was established until the specialist Navy team could arrive on the scene. The team of divers and technical experts specialising in the deactivation of mines and explosive devices removed the shell from the

nets and placed it in a specially designed box with sand so that it could be moved to a safer place to be detonated. Taking it back out to sea the team sought a location that would not affect the marine life and lowered the shell to a depth of 15 metres before performing a controlled explosion. The Navy team said that the shell was “pretty run down” and was possibly from the First World War.

Alfaz del Pi skate park under construction

WORK HAS started on the new skate park in Alfaz del Pi. Located on a municipal plot for sports and next to the local police station the work will take place in two phases. Oscar Perez, councillor for Youth and Sports said “this year we will build the bowl, which is a concrete pit that allows skaters, scooters and roller blade riders to perform a number of tricks and stunts”. The second phase, which is planned for next year, will see the installation of stairs, ramps and handrails that will simulate street furniture but are specially designed for sports use. Mr Perez went on to say that “there is a high demand from the younger generation, particularly those between 10 and 14, who enjoy practising these sports”. The total investment will be in the region of 50,000 euros and will cover an area of approximately 1,500 square metres.

Drugs found on trawler DURING A routine check by the Spanish Navy on a fishing trawler, 7 miles from the port of Alicante several packages were discovered in the boats nets. The trawler, which had four Spanish crew and is registered at Villajoyosa, was boarded by the Navy crew who intended to carry out a routine fisheries inspection as part of an ongoing campaign which started back in April along the coastline of Alicante. Whilst checking the fishing nets the Navy crew found several packages containing between 30 to 40 kilos of a substance believed to be hashish. Escorting the trawler to the port of Alicante the authorities were notified and the crew as well as the drugs were handed over to them for further investigation.

Princess Charlotte is now fourth in line for the throne, pushing Prince Harry back into fifth position, amidst much speculation that Kate and William are planning to have two more children. Prince William was present for the whole event as Kate, without an epidural, gave birth just two and a half hours after arriving at the hospital. Bookmakers had been eagerly waiting on the confirmation of the chosen names with Charlotte being one of the favourites, and Elizabeth and Diana honouring the Queen and Prince William’s late mother. Whilst the royal gun salutes were fired at the Tower of London and Hyde park the new royal family of four were said to be settled at Kensington Palace, although plans for them to return to their home in Anmer Hall in Norfolk had been made.

New Royal arrival makes Lego debut

JUST DAYS after the much-anticipated arrival of the new Royal baby, the Legoland Windsor Resort will welcome her - in miniature - at its world famous Miniland attraction. The resort’s model making team have created a minute 7cm tall double buggy for Charlotte - created from just three bricks - and her big brother Prince George. The new Princess in her mini carriage will take up pride of place alongside Lego versions of the traditional birth announcement sign and the wider Royal family in a celebratory scene at the 35,000 brick Buckingham Palace. The Princess will be joined by immediate family, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince George, as well as both sets of grandparents - the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall, and Michael and Carole Middleton. Also in attendance are great-grandparents, Her Majesty the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh - as well as the Queen’s beloved corgis.

If this is intentional on the part of the UK then if is effectively election fraud. If it is sheer incompetence, then it is a disgrace – we have effectively been disenfranchised.” Yvonne Carvath received her papers late on Tuesday (5th May) too late to return them by the end of polling. Husband David is still waiting for his. “So effectively, both Dave and I have not been able to vote at this critical time,” she said. “Our vote has been excluded for this election through no fault of our own and we are not happy about it!” She said the elections office at Salford City Council blamed the Post Office but it was clear when sending papers to people abroad more time had to be allowed. “We are all being urged to vote. Is it any wonder that people become disillusioned and don’t bother when the procedures prevent that happening in spite of their best efforts,” said Yvonne. Margaret and Gerald Hales chose to have a proxy vote in key marginal Warrington South. They expected the papers to be with their proxy – their son – in good time. When the papers failed to arrive they made inquiries of the electoral office. They received letters promising all would be well...but still have no voting papers! FRAUD Margaret, a campaigner for all British citizens to be able to vote without time limit, complained how Electoral Registration Officers in different constituencies remained almost independent and chose when to send out the voting papers. “We need to ditch that! Parliament needs to require that postal votes go out first by law – if they don’t the issue becomes an electoral fraud. “And rather than just tinkering around the edges, there needs to be a whole new way of voting – it is about time it advances from making a cross with a pencil on a piece of paper. This is the 21st Century... we do everything else electronically.” Margaret, who was interviewed by the BBC about voting last month, said people had opted to register in a system “that cannot cope and will not work” and been given “false hopes” about taking part in the election. She added: “I am furious and sickened and saddened, all at the same time.” And fellow campaigner Brian Cave, who lives in France, said there was evidence that large numbers of ‘citizens abroad’ – an official term used rather than expats – had not received ballot papers and were disenfranchised. “The Electoral Registration Officers in various constituencies have not sent the papers in time so they can be returned in good time before 7th May. The tiger mosquito returns

WITH THE recent changes in the weather throughout the region comes the dreaded return of the tiger mosquito. by Jeanette Rice Reports from locals in the Marina Alta area and now here in the Marina Baixa area say that the small but aggressive insect is back with a vengance. The tiger mosquito, which comes from Asia, was first detected in Spain in 2004 and last summer caused havoc for residents and holidaymakers alike. Listed amongst the 100 most damaging and invasive alien species in the world of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources, the tiger mosquito thrives in shady places, chimneys, garden pots and ponds as they like to be near an area that has some water accumulation. One of the differences between this species and other mosquitoes is that the tiger mosquito bites during daylight hours, with its sting reaching smoothly through thin clothing.

Benidorm Medieval Market 2015

THIS WEEKEND, in the Dove Park area of Benidorm, street entertainers and market stall holders will take visitors back to medieval times. Opening today, Friday, a parade will move from the town hall area of Benidorm to Dove Park at 12 noon with entertainment for the kids at 8pm followed by a dance show at 9.30pm. Saturday and Sunday will see street dancers and musicians, fire eaters and magicians as well as the market stalls with traditional wares. For those who are a bit more adventurous on Saturday you can have a go at the military training of recruits or, slightly less adventurous, the training of gentlemen on Sunday. New Media Markt store creates 70 new jobs

THURSDAY SAW the opening of a new Media Markt store in the polĂgono comercial area of Finestrat. The manager of the new store, Alberto Martinez said that all of the employees, a third who were local to the area, were able to speak English and some also spoke Norwegian, French, German and Russian. Opening daily from 10am until 10pm, 365 days of the year, the store has created a welcome source for employment.

AS THE thermometers rise and temperatures along the Southern Costa Blanca reach into the 30’s, the number of flights and new routs to El Altet is on the increase. Airport Director Santiago Martínez-Cava noted that; “The Alicante Airport will expand its air links with much of the continent for the summer season, in addition to doubling the frequencies in Moscow,” he announced in a meeting with representatives of Tourism Costa Blanca, hoteliers and other tourism business professionals, this week. In addition, growth will continue at the airport with new flight deals to now include Vienna (Austria), Budapest (Hungary), Warsaw (Poland), Carcassonne (France), Leeds (UK), Turin and Venice (Italy), Gdansk (Germany) and Antwerp (Belgium). Nationaly, the Alicante terminal also added a link to Asturias and the Russian airline S7, announced that it will double its flight frequencies between El Altet and Moscow. Alicante President, Luisa Pastor, emphasized that this reinforcement of air traffic with the emerging Russian market is helping to guarantee; “the potential

for tourism on the Costa Blanca is tripled.” A new agreement has been signed with the company Jet2.com, to use their base of operations from Leeds (UK) starting in July. While the full facilities at El Altet have yet to be fully utilised and two terminals lie unused, this week’s meeting at ‘Routes Europe’ saw the full participation of Alicante, strengthening their ties with new and traditional companies and working with various airlines and promoting new routes, especially the French, Polish and Eastern Europe. This week alone, the Airport added 885 flight movements (departures and arrivals) through to Sunday. The busiest day is Saturday, with 236 flights and 35,178 seats offered. Another symptom of the tourist boom in Alicante is with the Cruise trade, with three ships this week attracting a total of 5,259 people on board, including passengers and crew. While not a huge number of passengers, it’s a market that the Alicante Port operators hope to grow for 2016 by offering special rates for Cruise Companies for their berthing facilities.

El Altet offerings expand for the summer

ON LABOUR Day, May 1st, PSOE mayoral candidate Angel Saez, met with the 13 workers who were dismissed fro their positions at Torrevieja’s Salt Works. The jobs lost were from a subcontractor of the lessee Salinas. Saez wanted the workers to know that the PSOE were showing their support for the former employees and called for an upcoming rally outside the City Hall in solidarity with the workers. The following day, No.3 candidate for the Alternativa Popular de Torrevieja (APTCe), Jose Manuel Martinez Andreu, met with the dismissed workers, who claim they were expelled from the industrial area by private security officers. The workers were not allowed to enter the site and handed dismissal letters; “without any notice” and “with a ban on re-entering the salinas”, in what the workers said was a “humiliating” situation. Andreu Martinez promised that if they have a place of power that they intend to meet with the Directorate General as the Salinas “is an active part of the lease agreement and can perform through collaboration and control.”

Cancer charity offers support GROWING CANCER charity Bruised but not Broken hopes it will become a haven for people needing support on the northern Costa Blanca by Jack Troughton

Its successful shop in El Campello was successfully opened last December and remains a necessary money spinner as it becomes popular with local expats and the Spanish community. Founded in 2012, the charity was launched by Lorraine Brown to honour the life of her daughter Rebecca Isaacs, who died in 2010 aged 32 after a four year battle with bowel cancer. The prime aim of Bruised but not Broken was to provide respite for people caring for family and friends suffering from the disease. However, its remit is expanding and Lorraine hopes people affected by cancer can pop into the shop as a “drop in” centre to talk. “The charity is working well in one aspect – we are raising lots of money,” Lorraine told RTN. “The way it is not working so well is through ‘unawareness’ – people don’t realise what we do and we have all this money in the bank and I cannot spend it quickly enough.” She said when people thought of cancer charities they thought of expat organisations like MABS – but Bruised but not Broken was already helping with the loan of medical equipment and financial support in the area. “We support people in need.”

Lorraine said: “With cancer, families and friends just don’t realise how important it is to talk, everyone bottles it up – all my ladies who have the illness are always worried about their husbands because they will not talk about it.” WELCOME She said “absolutely everyone” walking through the shop door was made welcome – they could browse, or sit and have a cup of coffee and, if needed, there was a private area to discuss problems. “I cannot stress enough just how important it is to talk about cancer. It is going to affect one in two of us now.” The shop is open Monday to Friday between 10am and 5pm and on Saturday between 10am and 2pm. A group meeting is now held on the first Tuesday of the month between 2pm and 4pm to offer advice and share experiences and frustrations. The shop will always welcome any form of donations from furniture to clothes and bric-a-brac to continue the charity’s mission. And Lorraine would like to recruit more volunteers, to boost

Municipalities with fewer than 5,000 inhabitants are unique by Keith Nicol PARTIDO POPULAR’S Alicante Campaign spokesman Joaquín Albaladejo said yesterday, Thursday, that “in the Province of Alicante, the PP support and defend the uniqueness and identity of municipalities with fewer than 5,000 inhabitants.” Thus, the PP is backing the region’s smaller towns and villages and standing against the Ciudadanos en Alicante and their proposal to remove these municipalities and pool them together to make up municipalities of at least 20,000 inhabitants. “The proposal of the candidate Punset of Ciudadanos, regarding the merger of municipalities, affect almost 60% of municipalities in the province of Alicante; 83 of the 141, “ that make up the province, said Albaladejo. Chinese Tourism Board criticised for animal cruelty after pushing pigs off bridge A CHINESE tourism board has made pigs fly. The animals, each with a bright number painted on its side, were herded onto a ramshackle bridge overhanging Shiyan Lake in the popular tourist province of Changsha and pushed off. Online users have been upset by the “cruel” stunt, organised by Shi Huang as part of local May Day celebrations, with many criticising the event after photos were published on state broadcaster CCTV’s Facebook page. “They look like they were pushed not jumping through choice. Cruel,” wrote Hayley McDonough. Another user, Kay Khine S L, wrote: “This is animal abuse!” Jo Metcalfe added: “This is beyond sick. What did these sentient beings do, to deserve such punishment”? Mr Huang, who plans to make the event weekly despite reports that the local tourism board received complaints, claims the piglets are “carefully trained” to perform the “special stunt”. Cop accidentally shoots mother at wedding

A KENTUCKY police officer has been put on administrative leave after accidentally shooting his own mother at a wedding. McCracken County Detective Cory Golightly, 32, was adjusting his jacket when the weapon fell and discharged through the holster as it hit the ground at the weekend. His mother, who has not been named, Is in a stable condition in hospital. McCracken County Sheriff Jon Hayden said the weapon, a .38 calibre revolver, was not one issued by the department. Mr Golightly and his mother were guests at Saturday’s ceremony at Bardwell Baptist Church in Carlisle County. Jeanine King, who was playing piano at the service, stated it was “so scary and terrifying. My initial reaction was, Oh my goodness. Could that possibly be a gun?. Then my next thought was, Gosh, who’s in the church with a gun?”.She then found Mr Golightly in the foyer telling his mother to breathe and be calm.

Tax discs and the new rules

Hi, My wife and I own a house in Albaida, Valencia (Just north of Alcoy) and I was stopped by the Police Local requesting me to produce my road tax disc. The car is UK registered and is new. I have no tax disc because it has been abolished in the UK. No more paper discs only compuerised information is now held at Swansea, Wales. The Officer demanded to see the tax disc. I tried to explain the change to the uk system. The Officer then said we could only keep our car with the British registration number for one month in Spain and after that time I had to get Spanish matriculation plates. WE have been coming to Spain with our UK car for over 11 years and never had a problem. Can someone advise us of the law about this situation. We are only in Spain for 4 to 5 mMonths and we do not have residencia in Spain. Thanks. Daniel

Dishonest customers

MY YOUNGEST daughter has just moved to Spain and started waitressing on the Costa Orihuela. She took the order for a couple of British customers, in their 50s or 60s, who were then served by another waitress. They had drinks and food to the value of 17€. For some reason the bill was not given to them which, I understand, should have been done by the bar staff. The couple left without paying and my daughter had 17€ deducted from her pay. This represents 3 hours of hard graft. I think this is appalling. The couple probably attend this complex on a regular basis and should be honest. Don’t they realise that the money comes out of the pockets of their underpaid waiters and waitresses? She was upset and in tears. It has put her off working in Spain. C.L.Naylor Punta Marina

Benidorm donates 6,000 Euros to Nepal victims ON MONDAY Benidorm City Council agreed to send 6,000€ to UNICEF to aid the earthquake victims in Nepal. UNICEF is one of the key organisations currently responsible for getting aid to the victims where over 14,000 people have so far been reported as injured and the death toll now exceeds 7,000 and is expected to rise further. Cristina Escoda, from Social Welfare of Benidorm said that UNICEF had been chosen as it was felt they had extensive experience in supplying medical and surgical kits, tents for hospitals, emergency drinking water and would be able to help the nearly 3 million children that are now currently in danger since the earthquake.

WITH JUST over two weeks to go until the local elections here, the Mayor Agustin Navarro is getting out and about, meeting the many nationalities which make up the population of Benidorm. The Brits are an integral part of the town – many have upped sticks from the UK and moved here permanently. The Town Hall pardon shows 5,900 officially registered as living in Benidorm in addition to the millions which come on holiday here every year. However, the council is aware that many Brits that do live here have not registered so will be unable to vote – something which they hope to address for the future. On Tuesday evening the Mayor headed to Rocky´s Pub on Calle Gerona to meet with owners Juan and Lesley Pintor Puerta and some British residents to discuss their concerns. Firstly he apologized for not speaking any English and said that he will learn for future meetings.

The first promise that Agustin made to the group was that he would ensure that there will be a British representative to liase with the British residents at the Town Hall if he gets voted back in on the 24th May. This went down extremely well with the audience, especially Bill Steel, President of HELP International Benidorm of which the Mayor thanked and acknowledged the association’s work in the community. Lesley Pintor looks set to become that British representative and having lived here for the last 29 years is well aware of the issues faced by British expats here. The most controversial issue here, the peamen, was raised by one resident and the Mayor was in total agreement that something needs to be done. However,

he also explained that a change in the law is required in order for the police to be able to address the issue properly. Currently all they can do is take them in and caution them, but then they are back out on the streets straight away – causing the police major frustration. But he reiterated that generally the resort is a safe place and has a very low crime rate considering the number of people that visit. He thanked everyone for coming and encouraged them to form a British residents association, which the Town Hall will fully support and provide a room for meetings. So whichever town you live in, don´t forget to vote on Sunday 24th – if you don´t vote then you have little excuse to complain!

Eurotennis insolvency administrators set a deadline for claiming debts

THE COMMERCIAL court of Alicante has now appointed a bankruptcy administrator, Josefina Martinez Caballero, who is tasked with preparing a report and list of creditors for Eurotennis, which was officially declared bankrupt last March. Creditors have one month to contact the administrator of any debts with full details of the amount, date and services provided along with any extenuating reasons that would enable their payment before other creditors. Last year, the chain Blue Sense Hotels and Resorts, based in Madrid, took over the Eurotennis facilities but closed the hotel in October and only reopened it at Easter, causing more problems for staff being laid off and then re-employed. The Eurotennis which is situated on the sea front of La Caleta, Villajoyosa, had to be evacuated last year when a fire broke out in the sauna area causing considerable damage to the ground floor reception area.

Forum on the Impact Tower of Roman power of Sport Tourism by Jack Troughton SYMPATHETIC RESTORATION of the historic tower ‘Torre de Sant Josep’ at Villajoyosa was completed on Wednesday after its 83,000€ facelift. The construction of the funeral tower dates back to the 2nd Century AD and was a symbol of the Roman Empire’s hold over the Iberian Peninsula. Specialist workmen were brought in to add ancient skills to the restoration and to preserve a building seen as one of the best surviving monuments of the period – experts say the tower is actually best viewed from the sea, reflecting the power of the Roman navy and its trade routes along the Mediterranean.

SPORT TOURISM is a major part of Torrevieja’s tourism future. Last week, a forum organized by Spanish Newspaper El Mundo was held in Real Club Nautico of Torrevieja (RCNT called “The Impact of Popular Sports in Tourism”. Forum speakers included Pedro Delgado, a former professional cyclist and commentator for TVE; Germán Robles, president of the Foundation of Atletico Madrid; Fernando de Portugal, responsible for the company Last Lap organizer of the San Silvestre Vallecana, and José Miguel Pina, director general of the company Mondraker bikes. Torrevieja Mayor Eduardo Dolon, stressed the importance of sports tourism to the city of Torrevieja and their special sports promotion unit which in just two years has attended more than 16,000 athletes from different European countries. Eduardo Dolon noted that Torrevieja has one of the best and most complete sports cities in Spain, with the majority of facilities all within walking distance of each other. He added that sports were not just important for visiting athletes but without doubt it one of the most important activities in improving the quality of life of its citizens. 11 train coaches torched and destroyed by commuters in Durban

ELEVEN TRAIN coaches were destroyed after they were reportedly set alight by angry commuters at Reunion Station, near Isipingo, south of Durban, South Africa, on Wednesday. KwaZulu-Natal emergency services spokesperson, Robert McKenzie, confirmed the incident but said no one had been reported injured. Commuters allegedly stoned the coaches and set them on fire, claiming that they were unhappy with the service provided.

Finestrat Council announces registration for summer school by Jeanette Rice THE DEPARTMENT of Education for Finestrat has announced that the registration period is now open for this years 5 weeks of summer school. Focusing on sports and leisure activities the enrolment is open throughout the month of May for children aged between 3 and 12. Designed to assist working parents with the long summer break the scheme has run successfully on ten previous occasions. The summer course will run from June 22nd until July 24th. For those parents who only want to enrol their children for the activities the hours will be 9am until 1pm and the price set at €25 per week. For those who wish their children to stay for lunch the hours will be 9am until 3pm at a cost of €35 per week, this is a reduction of €10 compared to the previous year. Students will be able to enjoy a wide range of activities from craft workshops, games, sports with swimming lessons included. The swimming lessons will be for non swimmers as well as improving techniques for those who can already swim. If you wish to register or would like further information you can contact the Department of Education on the 1st floor of the town hall in Finestrat or the extension office in La Cala between the hours of 8am and 3pm.

Vespa rider arrives in Madrid with Tourism claim

RAFA GASENT arrived safely in Madrid 12 hours after leaving Benidorm on a Vespa, and 500 kilometres later. Benidorm’s application to become a tourist town was rejected just over a month ago, and as featured two weeks ago by RTN a petition was being delivered to ask for this decision to be overturned. Rafa left Elche Park in Benidorm on Sunday 3rd May at 9.30am and travelled at an average speed of 70 kilometres, stopping in El Campello for an early lunch he then continued on his long journey. Arriving in Madrid late in the evening Rafa rested and then on Monday morning attended the Congress of Deputies. He has now returned to Benidorm.

The event was held in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia and was one of a series of workshops to be held within the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). Katernia Filitsina, the representative for the Benidorm Tourist Foundation made a presentation to over 60 professionals and said “by participating in this meeting, the Foundation aims to continue investing in the constant search for new source markets in which Benidorm seeks to become a major travel options.”

ON WEDNESDAY over 250 old bangers left England on a 1500 mile journey to Benidorm, with teams raising funds for their local charities. Starting in Blackpool the whacky racers gathered more teams as they travelled south to Dover. On Thursday they travelled from Calais to Poitiers and today, Friday, they travel from Poitiers to Zaragoza in Spain. All being well Saturday locals

will see them, tired but hopefully in good spirits, arriving in Benidorm. Teams had to do up an old banger worth less than £250 and race it through France and Spain, taking part in Top Gear-style challenges on the way. There is a £2,000 prize fund for “best car”, “best costumes” and “spirit of the event” with the fun challenges that they have done on the journey having

a cash prize each day of 100 euros. All team members will be awarded medals and certificates when they reach Benidorm. The organisers of the event have taken everything into consideration with 3 back up vehicles to assist anyone who has broken down and even arranged a day in their bangers at the Cartagena racetrack before they scrap the vehicles.

BENIDORM COUNCIL is replacing the old and expensive to run street lights almost 60 years on from when they were first installed. Funded partly by the council of Benidorm, the majority of the costs will be covered by the Provincial Council of Alicante and two telephone companies who signed an agreement with the council. Work began in February with the lights being replaced in avenida del Europa and has now expanded to cover avenida del Mediterráneo with a total of 90 streets eventually benefiting from the new lighting. SICE, the company responsible for the maintenance of lighting and traffic light network in Benidorm, is replacing the 60 year old lights with modern energy efficient ones which they say will not only improve the look of the area but also see a huge reduction in electricity consumption. The mayor of Benidorm, Agustín Navarro, said that “replacing street lights in avenida del Mediterráneo was a necessity, since they had been installed during the Franco era and now, 60 years later, it was time to change them”.

U3A MARINA Baixa took a step back in time with a trip south to discover the history and sights of Cordoba and Seville. The four day break was enjoyed by 46 members of the association heading from Albir to Cordoba and the opportunity to explore the historical sights of the city. The journey to Seville was broken with a stop at Madinat al-Zahara, and one of the largest museums of archaeological sites in Europe. And Seville and its history came alive for the group – including a visit to the Plaza de – known as the ‘mushroom of Seville’ – where from the rooftop walkway, visitors can enjoy a 360 degree view of the city. U3A Marina Baixa holds its general meetings on the fourth Monday of the month at the auditorium of the Casa de Cultura in Alfaz del Pi. Rock Against Cancer

THIS SUNDAY’S ‘Rock Against Cancer’ event, is a fabulous opportunity to support one of Torrevieja’s most worthy causes, the AECC. by Keith Nicol The street party takes place at the lower end of Calle Apollo outside of Monroe’s Music Pub, with the first band on stage at 4pm. Organised by Monroe’s Neil Wyatt, who is also celebrating his birthday this week, more than a dozen bands and entertainers are offering their services for free in an effort to raise as much money as possible for Cancer support and testing. ‘Rock Against Cancer’ is a charity rock concert featuring some of the best bands on the “Costa Blanca”: Magnetik Surf, Deja Vu, Black Thunder (ACDC tribute band), Los Duques, Rebel Fires, Kolted, and as a special guest, the well known guitar player Santiago Campillo (founder of the band M Clan). ‘Rock Against Cancer’ is completely free to attend with all money raised going directly to the AECC, whose head office is less than a stones throw away from the front door of Monroe’s Music Pub, which is located at Calle Apolo 12, Torrevieja. Fundraising is being done solely through donations at the AECC stand, buying themed T-shirts for the unbeatable price of only five Euros as these have been sponsored by Scansat, guitar plectrums, pin badges, drinks, food, and raffle tickets. Music under the sun and stars will take place from 4.00pm until 10.00pm after which the action moves inside the pub with the fun continuing until the early hours. Everyone is invited to attend with special face painting and other activities for the kids, while outside there will be food served, drinks poured, raffle tickets sold and lots of dancing to the sound of some of the regions best bands

and musicians. Munroe’s Music Pub owner Neil Wyatt remarked; “This is the biggest event in Torrevieja this year, with the biggest bands on the Costa Blanca, and for the best cause. Mansfield Reds visit Monte Mentals WALKING FOOTBALL took another terrific stride forward with the first visit by an English team, the Mansfield Senior Reds, spending the week in Los Montesinos this week. by Keith Nicol The event was organised by the ever youthful Stan Dibble and the fun event pitted the skills of a mixed Monte Mentals squad along with participation from Daya Vieja, Playa Flamenca and Lo Crispin. Not only that, but the players from Playa Flamenca brought along their wives and girlfriends, all looking splendid in Pritty Pink, as their new WAGS fan club. The entire visit was played in good nature, with smiles everywhere, with the games played in a good spirit with the results just being a formality. Teams played two games each on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday with the games refereed by Bill Whitehouse and Stan Dibble The Monte Mentals looked splendid in their new Los Montesinos kits, kindly sponsored to the tune of 200€ by local Real Estate company Re-Max. Time to improve container displays

AS LATE spring and summer approaches and more time is spent outside in gardens or on apartment terraces now is a good time to improve containers of plants. THERE ARE six essential tasks; cleaning the outside of containers and their drip trays, replacing dead or dying plants, improving planting mediums, pruning existing plants, cleaning leaves and pest prevention. CLEANING CONTAINERS AND TRAYS Clean with a jet or sponge of soapy water and then rinse clean. Recognise that glazed pots are easier to clean than terracotta pots which can be ingrained with green moulds especially in shady situations. REPLACING PLANTS If plants are dying or look very poorly because of insect or fungal attacks during the past year it is wise in most cases to replace them. If you have had problems with the same varieties of plants previously change to a different type of plant. IMPROVING PLANTING MEDIUMS Plants in containers can in time use up all the available nutrients in the soil organic matter based composts. Three solutions are possible. Feed plants every month or two with a liquid or granular feed, change the top few centimetres of compost each year and top up to the original depth to

counteract any compost shrinkage or repot growing plants in new compost every two or three years. PRUNING EXISTING PLANTS Prune to shape and size appropriate to their intended display situation. CLEANING LEAVES The leaves of evergreen plants are worth washing with a hand sprayer or small sponge each spring. If leaves are very grimy add a few drops of potassium soap or an eco washing up liquid to the water. PEST PREVENTION The first thing is not to over water or feed plants as this can stimulate fast weak growty vulnerable to insect and fungal attacks. Secondly one can stick insecticide impregnated plastic insect deterrents alongside plants. Fortunately some brands like Neudorff are ecological. Thirdly it helps to plant one or two garlic segments alongside geranium and rose plants. Lastly if you are pestered by snails or slugs place a few slug pellets on the surface of tge soil of each pot and if you

have groups of containers dust a few granules between the containers where snails can rest in the cool damp shade. Having given containers a spring clean reconsider how you group containers and consider adding more to make displays most pleasing. The book ‘Apartment Gardening – Mediterranean style’ was originally to be titled ‘Attractive and productive terraces and balconies’. It includes much about container gardening of interest to garden gardeners as well. It is now most easily obtained via Amazon and other major internet bookshops.

Shaun to the finish MARATHON MAN Shaun Howlett was carried the last five miles of a gruelling London Marathon by the cheers of the crowds and the red, white and blue of Union Jacks. by Jack Troughton Completing the 26 miles and 385 yards in a respectable 4 hours 2 minutes and 11 seconds, he also raised £3,800 for UK charity Scope, which helps disabled people integrate into society by providing opportunities and giving them independence. “It was absolutely excellent,” he told RTN on his return to Javea. “I didn’t realise you could actually smile for 90% of a marathon – the last five miles were really hard. “I finished just outside my target of four hours but it just got the better of me at the end – but the people in the crowd get you through it – they are cheering and singing; it was a feeling I have never experienced before. “The last five miles were a struggle but you can tell you are coming to the end and the atmosphere just picks you up again. It was a massive buzz.” He added: “All of a sudden you can see Big Ben and Buckingham Palace and you think ‘I’m nearly there!’ There were Union Jacks flying and it makes you proud to be British.” Shaun said the crowds were eight deep around the course – a record 37,000 people took part in the marathon – and there were some 750,000 spectators. FUND RAISING Benitachell gym Motive8 and its neighbour Enhance Health and Beauty staged a fund raising day for Shaun at the end of March and chipped in with £1,700 of the total. Across the finish line, Shaun received his medal and a series of goody bags before being reunited with his family. Together they went to the Scope area to meet the charity’s other runners and swap stories. “It was just a great day from getting up at 6am and getting home at 5pm before we went to the pub – 25 of us all went out to celebrate.” And Shaun said even a couple of days later – before returning to Spain – he was wearing his ‘I finished the London Marathon’ and people were still coming up to congratulate him and drivers were sounding their horns. “I am absolutely over the moon about how much we raised – I cannot believe how many people backed us,” he said. Shaun is determined to run the marathon again but may wait a couple of years – although he does already miss the four days a week training schedule. “Literally the day after the marathon, the ballot opens for next year’s race...it’s a day when you don’t feel like applying but I will absolutely do it again!”

‘MS Braemar’ in Alicante

THE CRUISE vessel Braemer from the company Fred. Olsen Cruise Line arrived at the Port of Alicante at 11.30 am last 24th of April. The ship arrived with about 800 passengers and 370 crew members. I hate Mum’s boyfriend

I can‘t stand my Mum’s new boyfriend. My Dad died four years ago, and I helped my Mum through it. She has relied on me ever since. I worry that she is making a mistake with this new Guy, and now she says he is moving in. I am 18 soon and have always wanted to join the armed forces, but wonder whether I should leave. You are naturally worried about your Mum, and you’ve done a great job in looking after her. It would have been very tough on you both when you lost your Dad, but your Mum is entitled to have friends. I would suggest you concentrate on yourself now, and look to the future. Bide your time at home, until you are able to leave. A couple of years living away and travelling the world will be good for you, and help you gain perspective. Sometimes in life we have to endure other people’s relationships, even if we think they could do better.

What future do I have? I am 23, and my parents brought me over to Spain when I was 14. I never settled in at Spanish school, and struggled with learning the language in particular. The only work I can get is food prep at a local restaurant. It’s not even full time as the job is seasonal, and I get laid off in the winter. I enjoy the job but the pay is poor, and I fear I will never be able to leave home and get my own place. I worry that I have no future. I am very down. The first thing you should do is enrol at College, and learn Spanish. People who are fluent, have a massive advantage over others in this regard. This will open doors for you. Also, if you enjoy the restaurant industry, why not look to taking a course on catering and hospitality? If you don’t make any strides towards changing the outlook, you will stay in dead end jobs, and never have the opportunity to leave home. Your future is in your hands. Good luck! FOR THOSE who have yet to visit this colourful city – what are you waiting for? IT´S RANKED 3rd in places to visit in the USA, often combined with a stay in Los Angeles or as part of a tour of the West Coast of the USA. Originally given city status in 1910, the boundaries of this town have grown so much that the original, and famous ‘Welcome to Fabulous Los Angeles’ sign was originally over 4km from the last building, and now is less than 0.5km! Whilst efforts have been made by various top name hotels to entice the family market, by way of holiday theme parks, these endeavours have invariably lacked interest and closed along the way, leaving Vegas most famous for it’s gambling and hotel area, known as The Strip. Consisting of over 4 miles of glittering towers of hotels, casinos, big name concerts and top entertainment shows, even the most committed of travellers would be hard put to get through this lot in a short time! Not to worry, you can take your time and see it all. The hotels in Vegas are quite simply stunning, with 15 of the 25 largest hotels in the world all located in this area. Top end hotels are the Bellagio and the Venetian, which have resulted in many of the older hotels also investing in refurbishment. A win-win if you are a guest at any of these hotels. There are plenty of medium range hotels to stay at also (if your pocket money doesn´t quite reach the prices of the Bellagio, or if you prefer to keep your pennies for the one-armed bandits!). Hotels such as the Flamingo offer plenty for your dollar and still keeping you in the central location. So what to do in Vegas? Well the pretty obvious answer is the Casinos. Its hard to turn around without being in front of yet another way to lose your inheritance. Or not! Some casinos offer free lessons on many of the house games. Most would agree that it´s essential to watch the games in play too, to get a feel for how they operate. And if you do win, big or small, remember to save it and walk away! If not, for sure you will lose it all again and probably more too! If you want to escape from the flashing lights and beeping noises of the machines for a while, there are plenty of alternative forms of entertainment available. The most obvious is taking in a show – famous singers, magicians, entertainers of all walks of life are to be found here, year round. You could also visit the Grand Canyon, many hotels can book this excursion for you, whether your preferred mode is by bus or by helicopter. Another not to be missed experience is a visit to the Hoover Dam, usually around 3 hours for a guided excursion of this awesome structure, and perhaps with a detour to a chocolate factory or botanic gardens on the return journey.

If it’s not broke.... HI AUNTY. Last week ,after 5 years of using it ,windows 7 suddenly flashed up that my copy of windows 7 was an illegal copy, which of course it isn’t. I have the product number, but what I was wondering is, if I input the number and try to register it what would happen if it didn’t accept it, would it close down altogether. At the moment it continues to work as normal and so is it a case of ‘if it’s not broke don’t fix it’. IF you have a legitimate product number for the copy of Windows you are using, then you should have no problems reactivating it. Windows should not “close down” or cease to functions. people Reach Out get their guns out REACH OUT received a generous donation from Los Pistoleros last week. The Los Rosales Restaurant Guardamar was once again the annual charity donation venue for ‘The Pistoleros’ Westerners group.. Their generosity was again extended to “Reach Out”, one of their chosen charities. This worthwhile charity for the poor and homeless were very happy to receive a cheque for 700€ thanks to the efforts of Country and Western Band, Los Pistoleros. A 700€ cheque was presented to “Reach Out” president Karolina Leonard and their shop manageress Lorraine Whitney, who represented the charity on the night. Their words of thanks, on behalf of all the poor and homeless people being helped by Reach Out, were a touching reminder of the poverty suffered by some members of the community. Reach Out would like to thank the venue and Los Pistoleros for their generosity.

The 16-year-old won the talent competition sponsored by radio station Sunshine FM which started in January and has seen her compete in seven rounds and travel many miles – each

stage of the contest being held at the Emerald Isle, La Florida, Orihuela Costa. Nicolle performed two songs each week, with one contestant being eliminated from her group at each stage. The contestants surviving the semi-finals were given a fortnight to rehearse their version of ‘Once in My Life’ by Stevie Wonder, as well as a number of their own choice. And Nicolle chose to also perform

‘Jar of Hearts’, originally by Cristina Perry - singing and playing keyboard. Her two faultless performances beat large bands, several with large numbers of supporters. A student, Nicolle is currently studying for A Levels, including music, and hopes to continue her music studies at university.

Fund raising for little Cassie

by Jack Troughton GRANDPARENTS TOM and Mary Barrett are hosting a special fund raising event in Villajoyosa on Saturday 23rd May to help 10-year-old Cassie Toohigg, who suffers from Rett Syndrome. The rare condition affects the development of the brain and can cause severe physical and mental disability that begins in early childhood. Rett Syndrome affects around one in every 10,000 to 12,000 females – it is extremely rarely seen in males. Young Cassie progressed normally from being a baby in her home in Chalfont St Giles and met all the normal ‘milestones’, starting to walk, talk, play and feed herself. However, symptoms began to develop and she began to regress – things going backwards as she started to cruelly lose those important landmarks. Cassie can no longer walk, talk, or feed herself – she has a tube in her stomach to insure she gets enough food and water, and to receive her medication. She wears splints on her legs to keep her ankles in the correct position and suffers epilepsy and scoliosis. She spends most of her time in special chairs and cannot tell mum and dad when

she is in paid. She does cry and parents Mike and Tracie have to guess what is wrong. CARE The disease is at present incurable. Tom and Mary, who live in Orxeta, are doing all they can to raise money to help their grand-daughter and her future – she has a reasonable life expectancy but will always need care and will never be independent. Cassie’s family are now attempting to raise funds to transform her bedroom into a specially adapted sensory room where she can safely learn to play and have fun. And as part of this, Tom and Mary have organised a fund-raising evening at Bar Tropicana in Villajoyosa, from 5pm on 23rd May. Everyone is invited to enjoy the entertainment including a buffet, karaoke, and a raffle. La Nucia launches free courses THE UNIVERSITY of Alicante (UA) has announced four new weekend courses for May and June to be held in La Nucia. The courses are Astronomy, Photography, Traditional Drinks and Medicinal Plants. The first course to be held will be Photography, on 16th and 23rd May, and will teach the different techniques required for getting the best from your equipment and subject matter. The best pictures will be selected and printed for an exhibition. The other courses will run from the end of May through to the end of June also on Saturday’s. Enrolment is now open with each course having a maximum of 40 places. Applicants must be over 18 and preference will be given to those who are registered with La Nucia town hall. Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin

Conjunctions – and, but, or etc AFTER THE minor complications of the last few articles, I have decided to return to something much more straightforward to give all our brains a rest. Yes, we are going to talk about the words “and” and “but”, along with one or two similar items. THESE WORDS are called “conjunctions”, and for those of you who have just groaned, this is not as abstract as it may sound. “Conjunction” simply means something that joins things together and you can see this is the word itself. “Junction” means “joining” and “con” often pops up in words in English and Spanish to mean “with” or “together”, which is of course exactly what “and” and “but” do. Let’s look at an example in English. Here are two short sentences: “I am a teacher. I like teaching Spanish”. If I were to speak exactly like that I would sound a bit childish and breathless, so I join it together with a “conjunction” “I am a teacher and I like teaching Spanish”. The meaning of these two sentences flow together and don’t present us with any surprises, but if I wanted to express a contrast I would change the conjunction to “but”. “I am a teacher, but I hate teaching Spanish” – for example. I expect that most people reading this know that “and” in Spanish is “y” and “but” is “pero” giving us: “Soy profesora y me gusta enseñar español” and “Soy profesora pero odio enseñar español”. Now here is something about “y” that you may not be aware of. When “y” appears before a word that starts with the same sound in Spanish, that is beginning with “i” or “hi”, it changes to “e”. For example: “El hombre es muy guapo, simpático e inteligente” (The man is very

handsome, nice and intelligent. No, I don’t know who he is, I’ve just made him up). A phrase sometimes seen in written Spanish is “a nivel nacional e internacional” (at national and international level). Another example can be seen written on delivery vans and lorries: “Federico Gonzalez e hijos” (… and sons). The reason is for the sake of clear pronunciation, because when the same vowel is found at the end of one word and the beginning of the next they inevitably become joined together in everyday speech, (e.g “Va a andar” tends to sound like “vandar”). Normally we just have to live with it, but in this case someone thought to do something about it! Exactly the same thing happens with another conjunction – “or” which is “o” in Spanish. “O” changes to “u” before words beginning with the “o” sound in Spanish which includes the “ho” spelling. Honestly, I’m not just making this up! “¿Te gusta el azul claro u oscuro?” (Do you like light or dark blue?) “Es casa u hotel?” (Is it a house or a hotel?) Going back to “pero”, the great challenge for us is to distinguish it in speech from “perro” meaning “dog”. I sometimes set challenges for my students that complicate their lives more than is strictly necessary, which is what happened when I got a group of intermediate students to debate the differences between dogs and cats as pets. This is the case with “either …. or” which in Spanish is “o …. o” and also “ni … ni” meaning “neither … nor”. “O voy manaña o el miércoles” (“I’ll either go tomorrow or on Wednesday”) “Ni me gusta, ni me interesa” (I neither like it, nor does it interest me). There are other kinds of conjunctions which make more complex combinations, such as “porque” (because), “aunque” (although), “así que” (so). They are called subordinate conjunctions because they link an idea that depends on another in some way. Bicycle use reduces heart attack risk Riding a bicycle reduces the risk of suffering a heart attack, according to specialists at the Torrevieja and Murcia Quirón Hospitals. The use of a bicycle has several important health benefits, says Doctor Ernesto de Casas, a specialist in traumatology and orthopaedic surgery at the Hospital Quirón Torrevieja and Murcia: “It is one of the most complete activities that helps to prevent back pain, protect the joints and improve the circulatory and immunological system, as well as maintain good mental health.” According to a survey by the Organización de Consumidores y Usuarios (OCU, Spanish acronym for the Organisation for Consumers and Users), the number of people using a bicycle more than once a week has grown in the past four years, to 47%. In addition, the number of people riding a bicycle to work has doubled, going from 6.8% to 11.9%, according to the latest Barómetro de la Bicicleta [Bicycle Barometer] issued by the Dirección General de Tráfico [General Transit Department]. Cycling is an excellent form of cardiovascular exercise, with a very low risk of injury. Doctor Ramón Fernández, specialist in rehabilitation medicine at Hospital Quirón Torrevieja, states, “In physical medicine and rehabilitation, it has been proven that cardiovascular exercise on a bicycle lowers the risk of heart attack, since it promotes an improved resistance to insulin, lowers blood pressure, increases the contractile capacity of the thorax and promotes a significant improvement in the balance of lipids in the body, lowering bad (LDL, Lipoprotein A) and

raising good cholesterol (HDL).” When riding a bicycle, we exercise the upper and lower parts of the body, performing a very complete workout, which is particularly indicated for people with weight problems or cardiovascular diseases. Below, we explain some of the benefits of switching to two wheels: More Pedalling, Less Heart Attacks Riding a bicycle lowers the risk of heart attack by 50%: cycling raises your heart rate and lowers your blood pressure, so the heart saves resources. In addition, it lowers bad cholesterol, while increasing the amount of good cholesterol, which protects our blood vessels. Therefore, blood vessel flexibility improves, plaque accumulation becomes less frequent, and the risk of artery calcification is lowered. A Good Posture prevents Back Pain Depending on the type of bicycle we use, we must choose the recommended posture. The bicycle seat is our weight-bearing point so, depending on what height we adjust the seat at, we will not only be more comfortable, but benefit our back as well. In general, we recommend adjusting the seat so our body is leaning forward, so that the back muscles are engaged and the core stabilised. Cycling strengthens the lumbar region and prevents the appearance of herniated discs. Exercised and Protected Joints Some cardio exercises, such as running, overload the joints, especially the knees. FEAR IS a four letter word. It is the main reason that loved ones in the Spirit World cannot receive the blessing they need to start the communication they want to do. If your family is scared of the supernatural, nervous of initiating a spiritual dialogue or fearful of contacting the dead then those who have passed over do not have a chance to start communication with you. Such communication can be initiated by either side of the two way street that is the communication centre between the living and the dead. Spirit have an absolute right to make contact, but they are always told that they are not to contact the Earth Plane with a view to bring fear on any level. Good coaching means that the messages are therefore sometimes not sent, and if they are then they are sent when the majority of people can receive them; when they are unconscious or sub conscious. During sleep we dream constantly, but we are able to snore away for eight hours and then, just maybe, we have no recollection of our dreams on waking. Some dreams are a breakthrough to us, and just sometimes our loved ones are transmitting to us and their messages are sent in often our deepest level of sleep. These often mammoth attempts to connect are therefore passed over as being mere dreams. They are often very much more then that. Sometimes, and they are very rare, we are given tuition directly from the Spirit World. The essential message here is to help to open our spiritual portals therefore allowing a message to be sent and received. Sadly for all this, very often there is a failure. Our own dream machinery can intercept and annul messages destined especially for us, and although this isn’t ever deliberate it can in process erase specific and poignant communication.

Periodic messages are a feature of the wonderful mechanism that links the two different Worlds in such a way that it provides adequate levels of survival evidence; and the confirmation that our dear departed have the apparatus to make contact with us. Verbal communication, when it is intercepted, is very reassuring as it can convey the specifics that we need to identify and to inspire those who have passed over. I have taken messages on behalf of my clients for years, and relayed them utterly through clairaudience. I have been asked if I filter out these direct messages, but I do not have to. What is said always inevitably revolves around a pain free and existing life in the other dimension of the Spirit World. Nothing negative or abusive is ever transmitted because it is sent to inspire the energies of those who live on dimensional Earth. The passing of such a message is an inspiration as it links the two Worlds and opens the barrier to free and sustainable communication. What has gone wrong if you don’t get your spoken message? Nothing whatsoever, since we are equipped to get cues from other sources that transmit to our olfactory nerve by smell, and visions that dominate our foresights anchoring our dreams through optic variations. Communication is just what it is, and any way it can be perceived and received, it happens. Fear will stop any of these processes. Spirit does not demand that we walk with demons and fight off the undead at anytime. There are aspects that could make anybody fearful, of course, but then those instigating the communication are our loved ones. Their very presence should be a joy to behold, and I hope sincerely that this truly is something you could take on. When fear is factored our loved ones want only to show their survival, against the odds; and their utter love and devotion in needing to start the ball of effective contact rolling in our direction. Everything else is up to us!
