EMAUS, WHICH manages the care of children and also women in protection from violence, have decided to take this drastic action as a protest against funding and other serious issues that they say have been ignored by the authorities. The association is planning a series of public protests, with this the first being timed just two days before the local and regional elections are due to be held. The Emaus council has accused the Regional Minister for Social Welfare, who is also a candidate for the position of mayor in Alicante, of ignoring the serious issues that the Emaus association is facing and that this failure will cause the collapse of the services which it offers. For the past four years the association has endured delays in payments from the authorities which has caused the homes to go into debt, unable to make the payments to their workers and their social security obligations. This has also meant that they have accrued additional fees for late payments with organisations such as the tax office. Director of Emaus, Rosa Aragon, has met three times with the General Directorate of Social Services and Children, in an effort to seek a resolution. On October 23rd 2014 she received assurances that advanced payments would be made and that a possible emergency fund be established until the actual economic situation of Emaus was established. November 20th 2014 saw a change in the staffing at the General Directorate and so new pledges were made the same as on the previous date and another meeting took place on February 2nd 2015 to discuss the viability of the proposals for funding. Altea’s plans for dog pound meets with public protest ON SUNDAY animal welfare groups and locals from all nationalities met in Altea to protest about the plans for a dog pound in the town of Altea.

by Jeanette Rice In Spain there are two types of “animal shelters”, the first which is called a “perrera” which is where the animals are given a short maximum stay and then are destroyed. The second is a “protectora” which is a shelter that focuses on re-homing the animals without a time period. The Altea council has taken the decision to allow a private company to run a “perrera”, which is run as a businesses rather than an animal welfare shelter. This decision resulted in the peaceful protest on Sunday being arranged. Organised by ADAA, Asociación para la defensa de los animales de Altea (Association for the defence of all animals in Altea) the protestors met at 11am in Altea. The majority were Spanish but other nationalities such as Dutch, Norwegians and British also participated, many taking their dogs with them. The ADAA spokesperson said “Anything that violates the dignity of any living being, in particular, the animals is unacceptable, with the election campaign approaching we from ADAA are also going to campaign - for

the animals”. They went on to say “ADAA as an association is not willing to take a step back with all that we have gained for the welfare of the animals and have created a petition to present to all the parties running for council”. The ADAA were supported by many other local animal associations including those from La Nucia, a protectora, and the Spanish dog association. Those from the local protectora’s gave speeches rallying the crowd and detailing why it was so important to protect the animals and although emotions were running high the protest was peaceful. Many of the protestors chanted “perrera no! protectora si!” And called for the councillors who had supported the perrera to be voted out at the upcoming elections, causing huge cheers from the crowds. Three injured in crash on the AP-7

THREE MEN were injured in a road traffic accident on the AP-7 near Villajoyosa. The accident occurred on Monday morning around 7.15am when a van and car collided on the AP-7 at the 662 kilometre mark, near Villajoyosa. The three men suffered varying injuries. One of the men, aged 43, suffered trauma to his face and neck and was taken to San Juan hospital in Alicante. The second man, aged 38, suffered a slight concussion and the third man who broke his kneecap were taken to Villajoyosa hospital for treatment.

Thomas Cook apologises nine years after Corfu deaths NINE YEARS ago, in 2006, Bobby and Christi Shepherd died whilst on their family holiday in Corfu due to carbon monoxide poisoning. by Jeanette Rice THIS WEEK the family have finally received their public apology from the chief executive of Thomas Cook, Peter Fankhauser. Speaking publicly Mr Fankhauser said that “from the deepest of my heart I am sorry”.

Last week an inquest jury ruled that the children, aged seven and six, had been unlawfully killed, and that Thomas Cook had “breached its duty of care”. The public apology comes after the children’s parents, Neil Shepherd and Sharon Wood, had previously criticised the company for not apologising to them personally, having only received a letter sent by the chief executive. The company came under criticism after it emerged that it had received compensation from the owners of the hotel of around ten times the amount that the parents had received. Thomas Cook then announced that it was donating £1.5 million to UNICEF but had not consulted with the family about the donation. Once social media became aware of the situation the holiday firm faced a barrage of complaints and calls to boycott Thomas Cook. Mr Fankhauser said he regretted saying Thomas Cook had done “nothing wrong” when giving evidence at the coroner’s court in Wakefield last week. He went on to say “it is absolutely clear that there are things that we as a company could have done better in the past nine years, in particular how we have conducted our relationship with the family, and things are going to change. I am not going to repeat the mistakes of the past by talking about the family in public”. It is understood that a private meeting was scheduled between the parents and Mr Fankhauser yesterday. The children, from Horbury, near Wakefield were on holiday with their father Neil Shepherd and his now wife, Ruth, when they died. All four were found by a chambermaid in a bungalow at the hotel, in 2006, with the children having died and Mr Shepherd and Ruth both being taken to hospital in coma’s. In a trial, held in Greece in 2010, Thomas Cook was cleared of responsibility and were awarded damages against the hotel’s owner.

Airports to have free unlimited Wi-Fi by Jeanette Rice

AENA, THE Spanish airport management company, announced last week that they will be able to offer free Wi-Fi in all their airports by the end of the year. The contract for the airports is currently provided by Kibi Wireless but that is due to expire shortly. An AENA spokesperson said that this was the ideal time to review and upgrade the services that they currently offer. Companies have been invited to tender for the new business, which will offer an unlimited free service with an option to upgrade to a premium, faster speed, pay service. Currently some of the Spanish airports do offer the free Wi-Fi service but only for a period of thirty minutes. It is anticipated that the contract will be awarded within the next couple of months and once awarded, AENA say, it will be a fur-

ther two months until the new internet service will be operational. AENA anticipate that this will be around October but definitely before the end of the year. A statement issued by AENA last Thursday detailed their plans for offering a free Wi-Fi service stating that it was a further step in their bid to improve digital services to itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s customers, who are more technologically advanced than ever before. AENA also stated that they planned to upgrade their other digital platforms so that passengers would be able to access more detailed information to improve their experience, for example, reserving spaces in the airportâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s car park, flight and boarding gate information and paying for access into the VIP lounge.

by Jeanette Rice AN OUTBREAK of scabies has been reported to the public health department after it was discovered that at least nine employees had become infected. Public health officials stepped in on Saturday and closed the facility for 12 hours whilst they performed a complete disinfection of the buildings. All staff, around 30 in total, are being medically examined and the Department of Public Health has activated itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s preventative protocol in a bid to contain the outbreak. Scabies, which is a contagious skin infestation, usually only shows its symptoms two to six weeks after the infection occurred.

Causing severe itching, the mites burrow under the skin, preferring hidden areas, such as folds in the skin, where the female will live and then lay their eggs. The investigation into how the staff became infected is looking into the possibility that the staff may have contracted the infestation from one of the corpses.

by Jack Troughton The Imperial Baths of Allon – the name of the Roman city where the modern Spanish town is built – will be the centrepiece of a new museum but the spa itself will first be restored. And it is planned to link the thermal baths – set in a protected public ‘green’ area - to other sites of interest in a ‘cultural corridor’ designed by Jaime Lloret including the town’s museum, the Chocolate museum, the theatre and the Finca la Barbera dels Arogones. Villajoyosa Town Hall believes the attractions will bring more visitors to the area and create jobs

for local people. Archaeologists discovered the thermal baths of Allon, built in the first Century AD, in 2006 and uncovered pools and saunas, as well as an open area for sport, and a commercial street with shops. The Romans built the baths around the same time the Colosseum was being constructed in Rome and the erupting volcano Vesuvius was about to cover Pompeii in lava. And Allon became a capital of the surrounding district, the ‘territorium’ covering scattered villages and homes as far away as Albir, Alfaz del Pi and Altea.

ROTARIANS FROM across the Costa Blanca enjoyed a party atmosphere on Tuesday to celebrate the 150th meeting of the Rotary International Fellowship Denia. A special paella lunch was organised at the Mapamundi Restaurant in the Marina Alta town – the meeting presided over by Ove Wittstock, who was also President at the first meeting in October 2006. And Chris Potter outlined the history of Rotary on the Costa Blanca – outlawed by the Franco regime, it thrived following the dictator’s death and successful clubs sprang up along the coast.

BRITISH VICE Consul Lloyd Milen is looking forward to his new role as President of the Royal British Legion District North Spain. Mr Milen, based at the British Consulate in Alicante, was inaugurated into office during a short ceremony at Ciudad Patricia in Benidorm and was presented with a ‘chain of office’ and Legion badge. The district area runs from the French border to Baza in the province of Granada and has 18 active branches. DETERMINED CHESS players Robert Simpson and Graeme Campbell have crossed off on of their ‘bucket list’ challenges by achieving official world rankings. by Jack Troughton The marathon effort took three years but the two U3A Denia members can now boast they are recognised for their skills across the globe by FIDE, the international chess federation. Robert is in the select league of fame at number 106,994 and Graeme is the world’s 106,604th bets player. The process involved the pair playing over 70 games in official FIDE tournaments throughout Valencia, including an international competition involving players from a number of different countries. Each match needed hours of concentration as they matched their skills against players already holding FIDE ratings as they were assessed – during these contests there were highs as played fellow veterans, and lows as they pitted against some highly ranked players still at primary school. SPAIN’S MINISTER of Employment Fatima Banez visited the Marina Alta on Wednesday to back Mayor Cesar Sanchez and his commitment to creating jobs. The Partido Popular politician, appointed to the Rajoy government in 2011, was joined on the campaign trail by Valencia’s President Alberto Fabra and his deputy Jose Ciscar, and other party ‘big guns’. The party visited the fish market in Calpe Port, shops and small businesses, as Mr Sanchez underlined: “Employment in Calpe is my priority.” He said that the town needed a council that supported local businesses, “the engine of our economy that can create jobs for our people”. And Mr Sanchez said the PP would create incentives to “energise” the people and move projects forward. “There is still much to do, but Calpe has improved figures in our four-year term, especially with female employment.” The mayor noted central government had invested 1 million Euros to build a footbridge across the busy N332 – removing an accident black spot as pedestrians leave the railway station – and improving access to Calpe with two new roundabouts.

I may be mistaken but I thought that Benidorm had rules about people walking the streets and going into bars half naked. I am not talking about the young people who go out in the evenings with hardly anything on, but the beer bellied giants that appear every summer thinking we all want to see how miss-shaped and totally illegible their tattoo has now become. I know it gets hot, and I know the larger person feels it more but I find it the hight of bad manners not to put your shirt on when you aren’t’ on the beach. It isn’t just the men, women falling out of bikinis that may have once fitted are also on my hit list. I very rarely see the Spanish being such exhibitionist and quite frankly it makes me ashamed to be British. Mary Barker, Benidorm

Dangerous dogs I HOPE you will tell the story of these two dangerous dogs. Last Wednesday night, in Balcón al Mar, the two dogs, both with collars and appearing well looked after, were seen moving from garden to garden very fast and in almost military style. They ransacked each house and moved with purpose, to kill. One neighbour still can’t believe they managed to get over his very high wall. Within minutes they had killed one of my cats and chased two others in 3 different houses including my own. One neighbour witnessed the killing and was left in shock. Another neighbour and myself saw each of the dogs and chased them out of our homes as they had targeted and chased our cats. Since then I have spoken to many people. These dogs have been sighted a lot. One lady said that there have been 3 other cat killings attributed to these dogs, not including my cat and another which went missing two months ago. Other people have said they have

seen these dogs and were in fear for themselves and children in the area and have put up higher fences around their homes. One adult no longer runs in the evenings for fear of these dogs. They are lean, strong, and agile hunting dogs that work as a pack. I have seen their speed, efficiency and viciousness and I fear for anything that gets in their path whether it be another dog, cat, baby or vulnerable adult. These dogs will jump high walls and enter gardens and homes. The police are very aware of these dogs as various reports have been made about them. Some people have said they might not see the dogs for months and then see them every day so it’s very possible that the owners just have a holiday home here. I am now trying to locate and stop these dogs and I also want to raise awareness of the danger of owners allowing their dogs to roam. Patrick Armstrong

R.E. UK Vehicle Tax Discs

IN RESPONSE to the recent letter on this subject, as predicted the end of UK paper tax discs seems to have created problems across Europe. In the absence of a tax disc it is down to the driver, when the vehicle is outside the UK, to be able to show that the vehicle is legally taxed when requested to do so. The DVLA Vehicle Enquiry web site will instantly display the tax and MOT status of a vehicle on entry of the registration number and vehicle make, so it would seem to be wise to carry a print out of this information at all times. A TRIP, organised by the Asociación de Madrid “Con Ucrania” (Association of Madrid “with Ukraine”), saw 14 former Ukrainian fighters enjoy the facilities at the sports centre in La Nucia last week. The group of war invalids, aged between 20 and 35 years old, were given free use of heated pool and other rehabilitation facilities offered throughout the sports centre, with the heated pool providing specific relief for their injured limbs, and an opportunity to work at their recovery within a suitable environment. The group are in Spain for 20 days before returning to their homes.

by Jeanette Rice PERMISSION HAS been given for the remodelling of three key areas on the promenade in the town of Altea. The areas to undergo the changes on the promenade affect the pedestrian zone, the cycle path and the terraces for the tables of the bars and restaurants, with the council stating that the changes are aimed at making the area function better for all. The cycle path, that currently crosses the pedestrian area and is near to the bars and restaurants is being relocated to be nearer the parking area, work has

already started on this modification. From the Plaza de Europa area to the old Burger King the cobblestones are being levelled and the bike rail removed, creating a space with terraces that can be used by the locals and visitors. The new layout is designed to separate the three areas so that pedestrians, cyclist and diners are able to coexist without interfering with each others activities. The cycle path was introduced into Altea two years ago in a bid to solve the difficulties between the general traffic and cyclists and also that of pedestri-

ans, but due to regulations at the time it was placed in the paved area on the promenade and meant that it was too close to the bar terraces, with tables being either side of the cycle path. A spokesperson from the council said that “the new route of the cycle path on the promenade adds to the path already in place from Albir to Avenida de La Nucia and although some planters will need to be relocated it is intended to create more space for the cycle lane, more space for pedestrians and better access to terraces for business owners”.

Norwegians celebrate their Constitution Day in Alfaz del Pi ON SUNDAY, 17th May, Alfaz del Pi was transformed into a vision of Norwegian culture and celebration. The celebrations started early, at 8am, with the raising of the flag in all of the Norwegian buildings in the town, which included two schools, three nursing homes, the Norwegian church and many of the shops. At 10am the growing crowds gathered at the main square in the town where a Mass was held followed by the parade through the main streets at 11am. Starting at the Hotel El Moli, the parade meandered through the town until it reached the Casa de Cultura for an official ceremony. The celebration of the National Day of Norway has now become a cultural tradition within the area since the early 1970’s, with over 2,500 Norwegians registered on the padron most of whom were on the streets of Alfaz del Pi on Sunday.

Ticket kiosks to go in Parc d’Elx by Jeanette Rice

TICKET SELLERS in the Parc d’Elx area of Benidorm have been given notice to remove their kiosks within 15 days. Agustín Navarro, the mayor of Benidorm has written to the local companies that own the kiosks and notified them that the Benidorm City Council is now revoking the authority previously given. The council had previously granted permission for the installation of the ticket sellers kiosks but has now decided that their presence at the entrance of the park is detrimental to the park image. The kiosk sellers, who sell tickets for almost everything related to Benidorm and have become well know for being the market place “one stop shop” for events, trips and entertainment, will have to locate to other areas yet to be announced.

Agustín Navarro, said in a statement that “the approval was given for the kiosks and information stands to assist those companies in selling the various attractions, but with summer approaching it is important to present the best image of the park and make it more suitable for those who like to walk within the area”. The council explained that initially only one kiosk had been given permission, therefore not affecting the pedestrian area greatly, however, when other companies had requested space they were also approved so as not to favour one over another. The kiosk owners, who do not contribute to the public funds with rent, have been given until 5th June to comply with the order.

La Nucia skate park exhibition by Jeanette Rice LA NUCIA skate park held an exhibition on Saturday evening with over 600 people attending. The skate park, located at the entrance to the sports centre and next to the BMX circuit welcomed pro skaters Diego Cuevas, Pedro Manuel Alvarez and Thomas “Pope” to demonstrate their skills to the watching public. They showed their skills of grinds, kick flips and manuals (skate boarding terms), proving that nothing is impossible. The exhibition was organised by La Nucia’s BMX racing team to raise funds for their club, offering a bar service which helped them to add to their target. Following the exhibition the watching fans had their opportunity to enjoy the park and all that the new skate park offers. BMX, scooter and roller riders took advantage of the 1,350 square metres of the various and sometimes challenging facilities that are on offer. The skate park is divided into two areas. The first, know as the “street”, contains street furniture that simulates handrails, stairs and ramps (specially treated for sports use) where the riders can practice their tricks. The second area, know as the “bowl”, gives the riders the opportunity to freestyle. The skate park in La Nucia is open 7 days a week, with users being required to sign a document accepting the park rules which can be obtained from the sports centre. It will be mandatory for all to wear a helmet and in the “bowls” area users will also be required to wear knee pads and elbow pads.

The first stop in Spain’s third city was the Nuevo Shopping Centre before heading into the Old Town with three hours to enjoy lunch, more shopping, and a chance to see the sights. Finally, the coach headed for the outskirts of Valencia and a chance to see Lladro City. Everyone enjoyed an impressive guided factory tour and the chance to understand the processes of manufacture and decoration of the world famous pottery range. U3A Marina Baixa holds its general meetings on the fourth Monday of the month in the auditorium of the Casa de Cultura in Alfaz del Pi. First delivery of food for Alfaz del Pi food bank from expats FOLLOWING THE fund raiser on St George’s Day in Alfaz del Pi by the expat community the first of three food deliveries was made to the Alfaz del Pi food bank on Tuesday of this week. The event which raised over 2,630 euros, as previously reported in the RTN, was aimed at providing the local community with food assistance during these difficult times, where families are struggling to provide for themselves. The vast amount of money raised has meant that the food bank was unable to take a one off delivery, due to space issues, and so it has been agreed that three deliveries spaced at four week intervals will be made. Nicolas Rush, one of the many organisers, said “this first delivery included items such as nappies, oil, milk and chocolate milk, all receipts are being kept so that everything is clearly above board, again we thank the expat community for their generosity”.

Visitors to Loja, in the province of Granada, are frequently surprised when they come across the silhouette of the Marx Brothers overlooking the village. Cinema tourism (set-jetting) is an undeniable fact; you only need to ask the delighted authorities of New Zealand, where they are still reaping the benefits of visitors attracted by the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy. quence of Martin Sheen’s film ‘The Way’. Bob added; “Spain has it all; the deserts, the beaches, the forests, mountains, lakes and rivers, and of course that old Spanish castle magic. Hundreds of villages and towns were transformed in the 50s, 60s and 70s when Hollywood arrived and changed their lives. Many of today’s popular tourist resorts owe their initial prosperity to film makers, who hired entire populations, as well as the more than willing, disciplined Spanish army and police force to produce their epics about Romans, medieval knights or American GIs.” In this guide there are 101 films and their locations, (the title is of course a nudge and a wink to the Disney classic about the spotted dogs), and it is hoped that readers will visit these places and share the knowledge that Spain is a lot more than sun, sand and sangria; although that’s all pretty good stuff too. The book was released on April 30th and is published by the Asturian bi-lingual publishing company, Camelot. The book is dedicated to the memory of former Denia resident and world famous cinematographer John Cabrera, who according to Bob Yareham, did more for the Spanish film industry than they will ever realise.

It has been announced that the new hotel will be located in the port area of the promenade (near the old Pinet restaurant) and will be built on a plot of 4,400 square metres. The new hotel will have 70 rooms and suites, fitted to a four star standard with the rooms being approximately 100 square metres each and suitable for families. The new hotel venture will join others based in the centre of the town, Calle Colon and Avenida Pais Valencia. This is in addition to the Hotel RoSal, located in the square by the church in the old town area where works are nearly finished. The hotel plans are a direct response from

an intitiative which has brought to the area overseas promotors and capital. These investors are also planning other investments in the area of Villajoyosa. Councillor of Economic and Sustainable Development, Jerome Lloret, said that “these projects are extremely important as they offer new opportunities for employment and will bring an increase of revenue to the town”. He went on to say that “by increasing the number of hotel rooms with excellent facilities the councils committment to promoting tourism continued, but that they were aware this needed to be a gradual, monitored, increase of visitors and local services would need to meet the demands of these increased numbers”.

What’s on... Benidorm is set to host a hip hop festival “born to be Jam” ON SATURDAY Benidorm will host a festival of hip hop, called “born to be jam”. The free event, open to all ages, will have a break dancing championship, music with DJ’s and a skating championship and will be held at the market space near Foietes in Benidorm. The event will begin at 11am and continue through until 2am on Sunday so be prepared for a long day. Focusing on the four main elements of the urban culture of hip hop (break dance, the MC, DJ’s and graffiti) many activities have been organised to keep all ages entertained. During the afternoon, scheduled for 5.30pm, will be the national championship of bboying (break dancing) with international judges voting for and the winner will then qualify for an even to be held in Newcastle, UK. During this competition live music will be provided by the band Funk Orjazzmic and also rapper Foyone.

SPAIN’S ECONOMY minster, Luis de Guindos, announced on Monday that the countries growth was anticipated to reach 3.5 percent by the end of this year. by Jeanette Rice The minister went on to detail that the economy grew by 0.9 percent in the first quarter of this year which was an increase in the growth from the previous three

month period. This acceleration in the economy had forced him to review his previous prediction of 2.9 percent and all indicators showed that it would in fact be nearer to 3.5 percent. Spain emerged from its double dip recession at the end of 2013 with the economy growing over the past seven quarters. These predictions have, however, not met with agreement by all within the financial community, with some economists stating that Spain’s recovery will not last due to several unresolved issues.

One of the key issues overshadowing the recent growth, they say, is the problem of persistently low salaries and a rise in part time and temporary work. According to official figures only one in ten work contracts signed in March were for permanent positions. During the first quarter of 2015 the rise in temporary contracts was 5.42 percent with the rise in permanent contracts only growing by 2.71 percent, almost half of the temporary figures. The economists also pointed out that the majority of these positions were within the agricultural

market and tourism fields, which would imply that off season the figures would drastically change and that this could not be reflected in the current mid season figures. With unemployment being at almost 24 percent, a figure the economist felt was still high, these fluctuations in temporary positions could only be set to increase the unemployment figure further. Other key issues were, they felt, that although there had been a rise in exports due to internal devaluation (where a country seeks to regain its competitiveness through

lowering wage costs) the trade deficit had continued to grow. They also felt that because the government was currently divided, it would not be able to maintain its path of economic growth. Not all economist are taking the same view, Christian Schulz, a senior economist at Berenberg bank said that “Spain’s recovery shows that reforms can work and with that unemployment will reduce much further. Spain is a shining example to countries such as Greece to show what their government could do even when it has political fragility”.

ON SUNDAY Benidorm celebrated the festival of San Isidro with a parade of horse drawn carts and tractors. The traditional celebration, which is to recognise the agricultural contribution to the area, began in the sixties, and although methods of farming have progressed many still use the more traditional approach. The parade, which pit stopped at Benidorm Palace, began at 10.30am with 22 horse drawn carts and half a dozen tractors, with the aid of the local police the parade made its way towards the Levante beach area together with around 400 people. Organisers had issued all the participants with straw hats and a drink of sweet wine or beer, which traditionally is said to help them complete the journey to the Hermitage Sanz de Benidorm (ermita de Sanz) in the hot sun, whist the children sold raffle tickets and enjoyed the party atmosphere. When the parade reached the Levante

promenade onlookers and tourists stood in amazement. One holidaymaker, Terry, said “with all the large hotels and lively bars the last thing I expected was to see was a parade with horse drawn carts and tractors, but our kids are loving it”. Equipped with traditional farming tools, the parade continued to the beat of drums and music and reached the chapel ready for the auction of traditional jugs at 1.30pm. This was followed by the raffle and then a giant paella was served for all to enjoy. The participants represented many of the towns from the locality including Altea, Villajoyosa, Polop and Benidorm. San Isidro, was canonized on May 15, 1622 for miraculously making water rise to rescue his son from a well, along with a handful of other wonderous deeds. He then became Madrid’s patron saint and, simultaneously, the “laborer/peasant saint” after his profession.

4th annual classic car rally heads to Granada ON SATURDAY over 60 classic cars paraded from the Casa Cultura, in Alfaz del Pi to the beach front of Albir where many onlookers had the opportunity to get a closer look at all the different makes and models and admire how well they had been preserved and restored. Most of the vehicles were from the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s with some dating back to 1916 and 1925. On Sunday at 10am the classic car rally departed from Alfaz del Pi for the journey of over 1,130 kilometres to Granada where they are scheduled to arrive at tomorrow, Saturday 23rd May.

El Campello to celebrate the fiesta of Maria Auxiliadora

ON SUNDAY 31st May visitors to the area are expected to travel to the town of El Campello to see the locals from the town gather to celebrate Saint Mary (Maria) by decorating all the streets with flowers and making a pilgrimage from the church of Santa Teresa to the nearby church of Salesianos. The pilgrims, wearing their traditional scarves make the journey on foot, horse or horse and carts and in the afternoon the children receive a blessing from the church or their communion before a celebratory meal.

Letting with the option to purchase: It can be the solution INCREASINGLY MANY clients request our assistance in regard to leases and lettings with the option to buy, as at this moment this formula is increasingly being used, due probably to the difficulty of access to credit and bank loans, or job instability, or because property prices seem to be stable, etc. Personally I think it could be a very good choice, depending on the circumstances, it could be the best or only option to reach an agreement between parties. It allows the seller / landlord to obtain an income, rent, while waiting for the property to be sold. Also, it is possible to agree a premium to be paid to have the option to purchase, to be paid by the tenant for having the right to purchase the property for a certain period of time. If finally the right to purchase is not exercised, this premium would be kept by the seller. In some cases, however, the parties can agree an option to purchase free of any premium for having the option. On the other hand, it allows the tenant and potential buyer, among other advantages, to live for a time in

the property before buying it. In this way, they can see if it really fits with his/ her needs, and invest the money paid for rent on a possible purchase, etc. Lettings with an option or right to purchase, are a double contract, two in one. On the one hand the tenant is allowed to live in the property for the time agreed in exchange for a rent to be paid, and on other hand, for the period of time agreed by the parties, the tenants will have the opportunity to exercise their rights to purchase the property, deducting all or part of the lease rents paid. This dual contract must be drafted very carefully, and as always we recommend you seek the advice of an expert lawyer, as you must make sure that your interests are protected both in relation to the letting and the purchase. Please be cautious. Never give out your bank details or ID from any company that has cold called you. Need Income ? This fund may do the job! With banks offering consistently low or zero interest rates on savings accounts and even a modest rise in the cost of living, many investors approaching (or in) retirement may have real concerns that their pension income alone will simply not be enough to sustain the rest of their years, especially if interest rates stay low for much longer. Therefore, investors need to look further afield than just their savings account to generate enough income to see them through their twilight years. The answer may lie in the classic investment that probably all investors should buy and hold, a fund from the so-called UK equity income sector. Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the AES International fund of choice for this job? For investors who are prepared to take some risk beyond a mere bank account, the Jupiter Income fund could be an excellent choice of investment. Benidorm cast supporting Emaus with charity evening by Irena Bodnarec EMAUS IS a local charity – based in Altea, which turns 36 this month. Its founder, Fransisco Nadal was born one year after the start of the Spanish Civil War and the family escaped to France as his father was anti Franco, where they settled. However, as that finished the Second World War broke out and Fransisco´s father went and fought against the Germans, where he was captured and held a prisoner of war for five years. During that time Emaus International took care of Fransisco and his mother in France. Upon the death of the Spanish dictator in 1978, the parents felt it safe to move back to Spain – leaving Fransisco in France, by which time he was settled and working, sending money back to Spain. At that point they decided to turn their family home in Altea into a centre for 14 children – there was no such thing as Social Services in Spain at the time and it continues to this day to house children with emotional and psychological issues who have no family to look after them. It seems almost impossible to believe that Social Services here did not evolve until 1980 – up until that point it was left to the family. At present Emaus has nearly 300 employees – yet only four years ago it was double that number. The reason – funding. Many of those have not been paid for months and the Emaus Association is relying on costly bank loans to cover the running cost of the 18 centres. The Association has not received any funding from the Valencian Regional Government since the start of the economic crisis and revelations of bribery scandals involving politicians. Money received from Central Government was wasted on the Formula 1 circuit in Valencia to the tune of €40 million under the then President of Valencia, Fransisco Camps. Now it has come to a crucial situation and as Montserrat Fiter, President of the Asociation Emaus puts it “Emaus is very sick”. In order to survive they are reliant on charity and so have set up “Euro a Month” to help fund the 320 children, pensioners, mentally handicapped and abused women living within the Emaus run shelters. Telitec are sponsoring the initiative and everyone that donates will be entered into a monthly draw with the chance of winning a mobile phone. Janine Duvitski, better known to many as swinger Jacqueline from the ITV comedy series is the official ambassador of the fundraising initiative and spread the word to her fellow cast members. Writer and Creator of the show – Derren Litten together with Simon Bird, Line Producer at Tiger Aspect went and met Montserrat, where she took them on a tour of the Altea children’s home and showed them the everyday challenges they are faced with. It will be a fun karaoke night with Jake Canuso, Tony Maudsley, Sherrie Hewson, Tim Healy and Johnny Vegas – and even Derren has promised to take to the stage himself! THE FLOWERS and perfume can turn otherwise uninteresting walls, corners of gardens, patios or courtyards, gazeboes or arches, and old terraces into wonderful features. The six most important factors being the choice of plants, their planting in well prepared rich soil, regular watering, the frequent removal of dead flowers, the prevention of diseases and a heavy late winter pruning. Before you decide to invest in rose plants recognise that: Although roses can flower for nine months of the year they will not be as continuously flowering or as profusely covered with flowers as say bougainvilleas or lantanas. Climbers can be planted as an isolated feature or fitted in with other climbers on a wall or pergola but bush roses look best in a dedicated rose bed or garden when planted closely to give a mass of colour. Roses can be very rewarding but they require more work than many other rewarding plants especially the deadheading to remove dead flowers , light summer and heavy winter pruning. In hot weather roses often last longer if cut and put in a vase than if left on the bush. If one cuts roses for the house this reduces the colour in the rose garden unless extensive. This is why many Spaniards grow their roses alongside their vegetable plots. In general there is less choice of varieties of roses in Spanish nurseries than in northern Europe, some of the varieties you will not recognise, and the

best varieties sell out fast. Unless you have a local nursery with a good selection obtain a few mail order catalogues from UK specialists and order early to avoid disappointments. One good thing about Spain is that it is easy to propagate roses from cuttings at any time of the year. So beg a cutting of every rose that impresses you in your neighbours and friends gardens, or beg the stems of cut roses when they empty a vase to throw them away. We use the following approach learned from a Spanish neighbour. Cut off the flowering or leafy top. Slit the base of the cutting for a centimetre and a half and squeeze in a dried sweet corn seed. ii. Plant the cutting so that two thirds of the cutting is buried making sure that the sweet corn is not dislodged. Keep damp. We prefer to plant cuttings in the open ground to planting in pots - largely because we might forget to water them! iii. When the cutting shows significant strong growth grow it on in the same place or dig up and transplant when a year old during the late autumn, winter or early spring. The heat and humidity of Spain can cause as many disease problems as in northern Europe. However the following actions should avoid most disasters. i. Only use healthy cuttings and purchase healthy plants. ii. Never allow rose plants to dry out.

iii. Feed by working well rotted manure into planting holes and surround the base of planted stems with a ring of horse, goat or sheep manure each spring. A twice monthly feed with a proprietary rose fertilizer or comfrey solution is also beneficial during the months of flowering. iv. Plant garlic corms alongside each plant or if growing alongside the vegetable plant grow a line of garlic through the rose bed to protect against fungal diseases. v. Spray plants against rust with an infusion made from horsetail and tomato leaves. vi. Prune off any diseased leaves and stems as soon as they occur and dispose of well away from rose bed. Do not compost them. May your efforts lead to displays as good as those in Madrid and Granada at this time and with the appropriate varieties through to Christmas as well.

AMMA has special relevance for the group as one of the founding members of the AMMA charity has been a long time member of Campoverde and has served on the committee of the theatre group for many years. Louise Innes was very concerned that there are insufficient day care facilities for English speaking people suffering from advanced Alzheimer’s. Together with other likeminded people, including Raquel Pena, AMMA was formed to provide quality day care and stimulation for people with Alzheimer’s, in English, and also to provide a much needed respite for carers who increasingly become socially isolated as they care for loved ones. Choir’s summer swansong

THE COSTA Blanca Male Voice Choir is making the final preparations for its final charity concert of the summer season on Saturday (23rd May). THE MARINA Bar, Calle de las Rosas, Torrevieja, is where to be for the free, ‘Reach Out’, charity fashion show on Friday 5th June. The leisurely afternoon event takes place from 2pm to 5pm and showcases the quality and cheap prices that one can find in the ‘Reach Out’ charity shops. After the fashion show, the outfits modelled in the show together with other accessories, clothes, bags and jewellery, will all be put on sale. The afternoon will continue with a fundraising Raffle, Tombola and Mini Auction plus, like in years gone by, will feature other stalls selling various goods. Organisers David and Lorraine Whitney and their dedicated team of volunteers hope that this show will be as successful as last year. So go along, grab a bargain and in so doing help this very worthwhile charity. The Reach Out Shops sell anything that is donated to them to raise money to feed the families registered with us and the homeless. They also give vouchers to the value of €5 for each registered person per month for them to choose what they would like. BRIGHT COLOURFUL arrangements will brighten up the last demonstration of the current ‘floral year’ of the Marina Alta and Costa Blanca Floral Club on Thursday 28th May. The Jalon Valley

SPAIN IS famous for its winemaking and arguably produces some of the words finest wines and the Costa Blanca is no exception. This is not normal behaviour. It is all very well having friends and wanting to help, but her first duty should be towards you, and your marriage. It is concerning that you say she hasn’t been very loyal when you were courting. She is being deceptive, and you need to get to the bottom of why she is behaving the way she is, if your marriage is to work.

Turn back the clock I was a happily married man for 30 years, until I stupidly gave in to temptation and had an affair with a younger woman. I moved in with this woman, but the relationship soon ended. My wife has said she wants nothing more to do with me, and has begun divorce proceedings. I know I can’t mend things with her, but the worst thing is that my grown up children are not speaking to me, and have said they don’t want any contact, ever. I feel I have lost everything, and wish I could turn back the clock. Sadly, one of the biggest casualties of divorce is the affect it has on children, whatever age they are. Your family has naturally taken the side of your wife, as the injured party. The only thing to be done here is to admit that the break up was your fault, give it time and hope that one day they will accept your apology. Burt is alive and well and rockin it in Philadelphia AN EVENT was set up by Wizard Entertainment in Philadelphia last week to celebrate the comic book culture, and of all people to make an appearance it was Burt Reynolds. The Michigan born actor is now 79 years old, and the fact that he is rather frail these days and walks with a cane has got the worlds press gagging for some pathetic story of how he´s on his last legs. He played his first role in Angel Baby in 1961, and although the film flopped, he went on to have a spectacular career in both movies and television. The event in Philadelphia was a-buzz with Burt´s arrival and he said to the towns Enquirer “I always enjoy talking to fans, and I’m always pleased with their curiosity about my career, what I’m doing, what I’m not doing, and why I’m not doing more.” Burt charmed the crowds when asked about his rivalry with the late Marlon Brando, before declaring the movie ´Deliverance´ as his finest hour. The actor does more voiceover work in video games and animated TV shows than movie roles these days, this dictated by the health issue he had in 2010 when he had a quintuple heart bypass which resulted in problems with eating which led to rumours he had Aids … sad old paparazzi huh? He´s also been less in the public eye as he´s working on his second memoir ´But Enough About Me´ saying “I got along great with 98 percent of the actors I worked with, a few of them I didn’t like at all. When you write a book like this you have to tell the whole thing, and there were people who I thought were asses!” The book is due out in November and it sounds like a goodie to me!

A man quit his job in China and opened a ´Central Perk´ after changing his name to Gunther. The ´Friends Fanatic´ calls his son Joey, has taught him to say ‘how you doin,’and has redesigned his home to replicate Joey and Chandler’s place. He remodelled his life after a bad breakup followed by watching the show, and has now married a woman called Rachael. Now that´s what I call an obsession!

Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin

Prepositions: Time and place

TODAY IT’S the turn of prepositions – yet another member of that large family of words. AS USUAL it is quite clear what these are by their name. They are to do with the position of something. There are prepositions of place – words like “near, under, next to, opposite”, and there are also prepositions of time – for example “before” and “after”. In all cases we are positioning something, in place or time, in relation to something else “under the table”, “before 2 o’clock” . In Spanish most, but not all, prepositions place the word “de” between themselves and the thing they are expressing a relationship with. I will explain. The word for “near” is “cerca”. We can use this on its own, for example “Está cerca” means “It is near” (obviously we already know what it is near, we are just not stating it). The complete sentence would be “Está cerca de la ventana” (It’s near the window). In your own mind you might think this is like “it is near to the window”, but putting little English words in doesn’t work in all cases, so it is best to avoid it. The word of under is “debajo”, so “under the table” is “debajo de la mesa”. “Next to” is “al lado” (literally meaning “at the side”). We might say “vivo al lado” which would translate into English as “I live next door”. “Vivo al lado del ayuntamiento” “I live next to (or next door to) the town hall”. This example shows up another small point to take on board here, which is very simple. When the word “de” is followed by the word “el” (the), they join together to form one word “del”. We know this of course because of “menu del

día” (set meal of the day). The last of our four examples is “opposite”. Remember this means “opposite” in position, not something like an opposite point of view which is “contrario”. “The bank is opposite the church”. “El banco está enfrente de la iglesia”. I hope you have noticed and remembered as well, that we express position with the verb “estar”. The same principle occurs with prepositions of time. “I’ll call you after (afterwards)” “Te llamo después”. “I’ll call you after the appointment” “Te llamo después de la cita”. “Let’s have a drink before lunch” “Vamos a tomar algo antes de comer”. This second example leads us to a very useful point about prepositions of time – which is that they can go before nouns (names of things like “the appointment”) and they can also go before verbs in the infinitive “comer” (to have lunch). “I have a coffee after swimming” “Tomo un café después de nadar”. Now, there are a few prepositions which are not followed by the magic word “de”, but I think at this stage we can live with that! Here are three common ones “en” (on, in) “sobre”, (on, over, about), “entre” (between), interestingly all three can be used as prepositions of place and time. For example: “Mi perro está en el salón”. “Mi cumpleaños es en septiembre”; “Mi casa está entre el banco y la farmacia”. “Te llamaré entre lunes y jueves”. “El florero está sobre la mesa” “La actuación termina sobre las 10”. SMGS donate to Cancer Research THE SAN Miguel Golf Society (SMGS) donated 250€ to Cancer Research via ‘The Linda Rennie Memorial’ last Sunday, 17th May at La Finca Golf. For the 5th year in a row, a golf tournament was held to raise money for Cancer Research. Several members of the San Miguel Golf Society participated on the course, which was followed by a presentation evening with buffet and entertainment from “Sunflower Valley” to conclude the day. Everytime, when the members of San Miguel Golf Society play their weekly round of golf and they fail to score on a hole, they contribute to the societies “blob tin”. Throughout the season, San Miguel Golf Society collects approximately six blob-tins that means more than 2,000€ over the year, which is then donated to several different charitable activities, including the annual Poppy appeal and in this case, towards Cancer Research. San Miguel Golf Society was established in 1991 and now has over 120 registered members. It is one of the leading golf societies on the southern Costa Blanca. Liberales create a commitee for the permanent intergration of foreign residents Gema Amor has promised to “build bridges and develop a strong and productive relationship between the town hall and foreigners who live in Benidorm. This joint venture between foreign residents and the town hall is to include everyone to participate in the day to day running of the town. Exchanging of ideas, experiences, partaking in local fiestas of all the different nationalities here and follow up as Amor did in the meeting with British, Russian, Rumanian, Dutch and Bulgarian residents living here. Amor who recognises the importance of the huge number for foreighners here in the town therefore to create a “multicultural committee” would be appropriate and beneficial when planning local fiestas and activities during the year. The Liberales can therefore give direct attention to this kind of organisation, direct communication, their presence invaluable to future planning and projects. Flashplayer update Hi Aunty Virus, I received a message ‘your flashplayer may be out of date. Please update to continue’. I clicked OK and the screen displayed the option to update or cancel Flashplayer. However, whichever I choose nothing happens and I cannot get rid of either of these messages. And Google page is no longer visible at all. I’m wondering if there is a problem with the router? Have you any suggestions....Thanks so much for your time.... Wendy & Ken Aunty says: Normally you flashplayer automatically updates, so no user input is required. And if you should update, you should always do it from the official website, not an advert. However, i suspect you say this on a webpage, and clicked it. This is not really an update warning from flashplayer. It is designed to trick Windows users to install potentially unwanted program on their computers. Clicking on the link may have installed some “adware” or other onto your PC.... Which is why you are now experiencing problems. Getting rid of things like this can be tricky, especially without seeing the PC and what is installed on it. First it to go to your Control Panel, and see if any new software was installed at the date when you noticed the problem. And uninstall it. Go into your internet browsers and uninstall any “nasty looking” add ons and extensions - or “reset” the browser. Then download and run antimalware bytes, which may help get rid of most other things. Changing homepage HI AUNTY VIRUS: Can you help me please - Last week I inadvertently downloaded RegHunter Euro and Spyhunter I have been in touch with them and they are refunding my payment and I have deleted it from my PC. Since then, whenever I open my PC I get Vosteran as my Home Page - I don’t know where this has come from and I don’t want it. I have tried to Uninstall it but all I get is “you need to close the Vosteran page first” but it isn’t open!! Please how can I get rid of it. I have been into Settings and put in my preferred Home page - Everyclick.co.uk - but it reverts to Vosteran - help! Regards, Sandy. Ghost trail I have often been asked if I have ever seen a ghost, and of course I have seen many. I know that I bash on when I say that no departed spirit belongs here on Earth, and that they should be encouraged to move on. However we like our ghostly tales, horror stories and ghoulish history in knowingly haunted situations. All over the World there have been sightings of the undead in various forms wrongly inhabiting places they should never be in. In fact ghostly sightings bring in big bucks on the tourist trade as we are led to feel the past and our imagination is left to imagine all of the rest. A trip to Edinburgh recently left me experiencing much of the past out there in the present, and it brought me face to face with several ghosts, when I least expected it. Edinburgh has much tradition for ghosts in general. The cellars of the buildings around the tourist trap of the Golden Mile reveal the substrata of Edinburgh in the past. Whereas nowadays often five floored buildings line the cobbled street that access the Castle, there would have been in the past several basement levels below street revealing cave like rooms that have brought about the perfect setting for the numerous and ubiquitous tours of ghostly origin. I booked one of these tours. It was billed by Time Out as the most terrifying, and it was adults only, and took place close to midnight...so it sounded right on, and it was. The guide began by telling

a heavily scripted tale to set the scene, and I just found myself doing what a Medium would; linking into my own energies, but following the footsteps of the past in the route of the underground tenement cellars. As we sped through a rabbit warren of dimly lit dark and dank passages and entered collapsing rooms and decaying timbers amid earthy floors, things began to happen. I closed down to the guide and started to see things for myself. Cold air was blowing across rooms where candle flames flickered and a stooped shape came towards me. Initially I though this was somebody dressed up as part of the show, but as she revealed that one side of her face was burnt and red, my stooping lady walked through the wall, diagonally, right before my eyes. The came a child, filthy dirty and in shredded rags, carrying empty jars and with a look of sheer terror at my recognition. This child was to walk through me, so began a real spiritual tour amidst the setting of tourist entertainment. I found it hard to keep up with the guided tour, and was unable to walk in one room so found that all that led me that dark night was a mere plume of the flickering glow of a tourist several rooms ahead carrying a glowing lantern. The cold misery of the darkness and the stench of illness became apparent. I was stepping over bodies and aware that knives were being carried to keep peace amidst this

grinding poverty. I could see steel blades shining in the dull candle light and could hear drunken calls and groaning. A hand reached out for me. When the tour came to an end we were well under the Golden Mile and my heart was beating. The crowd left climbing steep stairs to the cold night outside and I found myself in the office of the Director of the attraction. She was a Medium herself, and thank goodness since she was able to de-brief me on my findings of the tour. I had experienced so much, but the central characters I recollected all seemed to fit into place and were well known. The room that I couldn’t walk in had been similarly experienced by many, and was a feature of the undergrown caverns we were in. The wretched boy is seen very often, carrying empty jars for candles, whist the disfigured woman was known as just Mary. I had really enjoyed my tour, and the opportunity to meet those from the darkest depths of a dreary and cruel past existence. I cannot recall ever having seen so many ghosts of the past all at once. The Director knowing that these filmy shapes from the past were those who should be asked to move on, invited me to an annual service whereby they are honoured and protected by local Mediums in a specific event. A grim reminder of the past these unfortunates were...but off I went back to the warmth and comfort of my cosy hotel room, and glad to be able to do so.

Last week my daughter brought our toddling grandson from the UK to visit us and he too kept looking at the same space on the wall and smiling and laughing.....so he sees something too. Why not us? Black and White Photography Exhibition by NataliaPh DON’T MISS out on a black and white photography exhibition inaugurating in Casa Vital this Saturday, May 23rd. The photographs will take you back in time showing “faces of Spain” since 1974. You will be able to admire photographs of private flamenco dancing, women dressed in black, forgotten streets of little villages unknown to tourism. The photographs take you on a journey throughout Spain from Costa Blanca, Almeria and La Mancha as far back as 38 years ago. The artist - Traudel Baumann used to live in Altea in the 70s and wrote for several newspapers in Spain in the 80s. She currently

free lances and exhibits in Spain and Germany. She is a winner of several international competitions in Germany and the USA. Traudel loves to travel and photograph people, scenery and landscaping. Testicular lumps & bumps A TESTICULAR lump is an abnormal mass found in the testicles which may be located in one or both testicles. It is estimated that less than four in every 100 testicular lumps are testicular cancer. So, do not panic if you discover a lump, but at the same time you should ALWAYS consult your G.P. Types of testicular lumps and swellings The main types of testicular lumps and swellings are: Varicocele This type of lump is the most common, occurring in about one in every seven men. Enlarged veins in the testicles cause varicocele lumps. They become more noticeable after puberty when blood flow increases in the fully developed testicles. A varicocele rarely causes symptoms. If it does, the affected testicle may feel heavier than the other, or the lump may feel like a small sac of worms. Hydrocele A hydrocele testicular lump is caused by the build up of fluid in the testicles. This type of testicular lump occurs in one to two out of every 100 newborn males. Epididymal Cyst An epididymal cyst or spermatocele occurs when the long, coiled tube behind the testicles (epididymis) becomes filled with fluid and cannot drain. If it contains sperm, it is known as a spermatocele. This form of testicular lump affects up to one in three men, and most often resolves on its own. Epididymal cysts can develop at any age, but are most common in middle-aged men. They affect up to a third of men. Testicular Torsion A sudden painful swelling that occurs when a testicle

becomes twisted, interrupting the blood supply to the testicles. This as a medical emergency which requires immediate surgery to restore blood flow to the testicle, preventing tissue death. Testicular Cancer Some lumps indicate the growth of testicular cancer. Only a doctor will be able to determine if a lump is cancerous. Testicular cancer is one of the most common type of cancer in young men. So you discover a lump or swelling in your testicles……. Men over the age of 14 should do monthly testicle selfexamination to help spot any lumps early so that they can be properly examined and treated. If aware of any lump, swelling or change in the testicles medical advice should be sought without delay. Any problem may be caused by an injury, but can also indicate a serious underlying medical problem including testicular cancer. Prior to seeing your G.P. it is a good idea to write down any symptoms you are experiencing and how long you’ve felt them. Tell your doctor if you’ve had any injuries recently. Also, be prepared to talk about your sexual activity. Your doctor will give you a physical examination including the testicles to note their size and positioning and to check for swelling and tenderness. Most testicular lumps can be diagnosed during an examination. However, your doctor may order other tests such as blood tests, an ultra sound and biopsy to confirm the diagnosis. Treatment will depend on the cause of the swelling. The most important thing is never to let embarrassment stop you from seeing your doctor.

Albir looks forward to Beatles tribute TODAY, FRIDAY, The Flaming Shakers will perform their Beatles tribute concert at the la Fundacion Frax Hall in Albir playa.

The Flaming Shakers have been called the best tribute band to the “fab four” in Europe, taking their audience on a trip back in time to relive the great sound of the Beatles and also to encourage a new generation of fans to the distinctive look and sound of the 60’s group. Fifth tapa and pincho competition winners announced THE JURY of the fifth tapa and pincho competition in Benidorm have announced the winners as restaurant Le Sol and Cervecería Angelillo. Javea and BBC share Rose Bowl & Walton Trophy THE ANNUAL challenge between Javea and BBC ended with Javea’s gents retaining the Walton Trophy and BBC’s ladies regaining the Rose Bowl. Both matches were evenly balanced as the second legs started, but the Javea ladies had the tough task of going to BBC to defend their lead. Despite winning four of the seven matches they unfortunately lost by 12 shots overall and our congratulations go to Christine Mawson and her BBC squad. The gents match proved to be very similar to the first leg, with Javea winning four of the matches and extending their overall victory margin to 30 shots.

7 Trophies And Medals This Weekend For Club Natación Torrevieja THIS WAS a weekend of success for Torrevieja’s swimmers in the 17th San Vincente Trophy competition and the 18th Trophy “O.A.L. Patronato Municipal de deportes de San Vincente”. Over the course of the day the team amassed 6 trophies and a silver in the girls relay. Racing in the morning, the youngest club swimmers (9 to 11yrs) had some good swims against 10 other regional clubs, with 181 swimmers participating. One of the teams swimmers, Vicky Pigneur, excelled with a gold in the girls’ 100m Butterfly and a bronze in her 100m Freestyle race. The afternoon’s competition for the older swimmers (12yrs and older) saw Torrevieja win more trophies and medals. In the girls Infantil category Zoe Connolly won gold in her 100m Butterfly and silver in her 100m Backstroke races. Team mate Paula García won silver in her Infantil 100m Freestyle race with a new best time of 1:06:91 and Elian Del Río Castillo won silver in his Infantil 100m Butterfly race. LOS AMIGOS Golf Society captain, Dave Perry, chose Aguilón golf course for his captain’s day and what a great choice that was! On a beautiful May morning, 42 LAGS members and guests travelled from Camposol to the picturesque Aguilón golf course some 60 minutes away, where we were greeted, as always, in a warm and friendly manner by our good friends. Golf is not in itself a particularly complicated game but Captain Dave Perry almost succeeded in changing all that. His proposed playing format was, to the uninitiated, incomprehensible! Thankfully the format was changed to a pairs competition but some members were still arguing about who’s shot it should have been on the bus going home! Given the amount of lager that followed the competition, these arguments were, for the most part, largely incoherent! On golf courses that Los Amigos play, the most frequently heard shout is “fore”, nut, on this occasion, “fore” was replaced with “sorry”, preceded by a string of expletives! A fantastic fun day resulted and enormous gratitude goes to all the team at Aguilón for making this a memorable captains day. As usual there were some exceptional performances although one or two were exceptionally poor! In the Pairs competition, In first place were Len Whalen and Arthur Anthony with 32 points, well done chaps! 2nd place went to John Dunbar and Roger Ollerenshaw with 31 points, narrowly beating Ray Reynolds and Gordon Neilson on count back.

Now, instead of moaning about being cold, we are complaining about the heat, and looking for shade while playing, but a glass of beer or wine goes down well. In division 1 Amigos Belgos 1 are currently in top place after defeating Dominos Red, but only two points separate second and sixth place, as Pirates 1 and Los Bandidos both had good away wins. In the 2nd division Dominos McCoys had a good away win at Daya Vieja Hillbillies which puts them in first Las Salinas summer petanca league place. Laguna Rosa could only draw at El Rancho so remain in second place. Pirates 2 move up the league with a good win at home to Daya Vieja Rednecks. Skoda Roomster Scout ROOM IS a necessity for families. You don’t appreciate this until you become a parent. THANKFULLY, SKODA realises this and its Roomster, which reminds me of a Pope mobile thanks to the styling at the rear, has bags of space (up to a cavernous 1,780 litres – quite something for a small MPV). Its seats have 20 configurations so that no matter what you’re transporting the optimum

amount of room can be utilised. For instance, if bicycles are being carried then perhaps one of the rear seats might be removed but if rubbish is being taken to the tip then the whole lot can be taken out. Usually I have to make an exploratory trip to every vehicle I test before daring to show it our enormous tandem pushchair but I don’t bother with the Skoda. On lifting the large hatch it fits perfectly with room to spare. In fact there is almost enough room for some shopping… but more about that later... What I love about Skodas is that they always feel well built and robust. The Roomster Scout is no different. Once behind the wheel you quickly forget its shape. “There’s so much light inside due to the particularly large rear windows,” my wife Caroline notes. They are larger than the square edged front ones, which remind me of those on an old Saab 900 as you can see in the video at testdrives.biz. There’s a five speed manual gearbox but no engine stop/start and yet the 1.6-litre diesel engine will return a very respectable 60mpg. Just as well because

it has a demanding weekend ahead. On the Saturday we take it to the north of Hampshire to visit some art exhibitions and as ever time is imperative. Quickly I get used to the driving position, which is slightly higher than in a standard car making it good for overtaking and providing an added sense of security. I forget to put the child locks on the rear doors and as we are making good progress down the outside lane of the accident blighted M3 a red sign depicting the vehicle suddenly appears on the dashboard – Harriett has tried opening her door. Fortunately I’m able to travel from the outside to the inside lane fairly swiftly to park on the hard shoulder and rectify my mistake. Hot and flustered I am grateful for the air conditioning, which is certainly effective. The driver’s seat seems comfortable enough but extra padding in the lower lumbar region would be beneficial. I like the layout of the dash in this Scout version which is fairly simple and easy to navigate. The leather steering wheel, gearknob and handbrake give a welcome feeling of luxury.
