Brexit brings bumps Friday, October 7 - Thursday, October 13 2016

PRIME MINISTER Theresa May has ended months of speculation by saying Britain would head for the door marked ‘Brexit’ by the end of March next year. by jack troughton

The Premier said the process of leaving the European Union – triggering Article 50 of the Treaty of Rome – would begin and the next Queen’s Speech would include a ‘Great Repeal Bill’; to remove the European Communities Act 1972 from the statute book.

Read more on page 5

The news first came as Conservatives gathered for the annual party conference in Birmingham on Sunday; Mrs May immediately dealing with the ‘elephant in the room’. However, Brexit continued to dominate proceedings throughout the week. The process of leaving is expected to take two years as the UK negotiates its departure with the bloc and individually with the 27 countries it leaves behind. Expats across Europe will watch carefully over the period – as will EU citizens living in Britain. The official line is EU citizens in the UK will have their rights respected as long as the rights of Britons abroad are also acknowledged in a reciprocal manner.

The Tories seem to mean business over Brexit, putting the ‘Great’ back into Britain, and probably explaining the meaning of life in the 21st Century – all to appeal to the centre ground of the UK electorate. There may be trouble, sorry ‘turbulence’ ahead, when it comes to extracting the country from Europe but everyone is welcome on board the Conservative charabanc and the party is busy attempting to recruit disaffected Labour and Lib Dem voters for the ride. Naturally, it may not all be a pleasure cruise; Theresa May has not minced words during the party’s annual conference in Birmingham – branding Labour the new nasties in politics and putting forward her team as the official people’s choice for the future. The party get-together in Birmingham is over and as the dust settles over triggering Brexit next March and every word is put under the microscope of political science, we might learn where we actually stand. Details of the negotiations will not be widely available it is not the language of diplomacy but key points will be made public. Hardball is on the cards from both sides, we just need to see how the ball bounces… and hopefully without spin.

Fight for winter fuel

THE EUROPEAN Commission has rejected expats’ claims that ending the Winter Fuel Payment to pensioners in ‘hot’ countries is illegal. by Jack Troughton Campaigner Roger Boaden has learnt the EC has ruled the withdrawal of the benefit to retired British citizens in Spain, France, Greece, Portugal, Malta and Gibraltar did not breach European law. However, Roger, who lives in France and submitted a petition to Brussels, has two months to reply – and will be joined in the battle by expats who are currently denied the annual £200 payment; which rises to £300 to those aged 80. The benefit was first introduced in 1997-98 but was not paid to expats in Europe until the EU ruled this was illegal and said it was discriminatory and against treaty rules. Brian Cave, of ECREU – campaign group Expat Citizens Resident in Europe – said: “Any knowledgeable pensioner knows this is not the case as, while Britain is still part of the European Union, benefits are transferable and can’t be cherry picked. ‘Following Roger’s success in forcing the Department of Works and Pensions to uncover the truth about the methods used to justify ending WFP in some ‘hot’ EU countries, he is now seeking further evidence of their wrong-doing. “So the petition to the EU has taken on increased relevance. Roger now has two months to reply. We must give him the widest possible support. If you have not already done so, please back his efforts by supporting the petition.” Margaret Hales, ECREU coordinator in Spain, added: “We all moan and groan that we have lost the Winter Fuel Payment. Here is a chance to do something; actually two things. Sign the petition and join ECREU, it’s free to do so! “They both take only moments but your support will be noticed by those who take decisions. While we are still in the European Union, let’s right the Winter Fuel Payment injustice.’ ECREU has been founded by activists across Europe, including lawyers, teachers, environmentalists and retired politicians. Within a few months the group has gained thousands of members. It is actively lobbying all political parties in Britain about the need to protect British citizens in Europe ahead of the negotiations for Brexit. Find out more at www.ecreu.com. And to support Roger´s petition go to https://petiport.secure.europarl.europa. eu/petitions/en/ . Pictured is Margaret Hales with the wood she buys to warm her Costa Blanca home in winter.

Brexit brings bumps by Jack Troughton PRIME MINISTER Theresa May has ended months of speculation by saying Britain would head for the door marked ‘Brexit’ by the end of March next year. The Premier said the process of leaving the European Union – triggering Article 50 of the Treaty of Rome – would begin and the next Queen’s Speech would include a ‘Great Repeal Bill’; to remove the European Communities Act 1972 from the statute book. And certainly the indications from the Spanish authorities – especially at a regional and provincial level along the Mediterranean coast – are expats are welcome. However, details concerning such things as pensions, access to health care and free movement are sparse and very real uncertainty remains. Mrs May’s announcement caused “jitters”. Sterling fell to a 31-year low against the US Dollar but the FTSE 100 index soared to an 18-month high – and the Prime Minister admitted the process would not be “plain sailing” and there would be “bumps in the road.” VALID She said there were still democratically-elected politicians saying Brexit was not valid and calling for a second vote and others saying the move would be challenged in the courts. “But come on. The referendum result was clear. It was legitimate. It was the biggest change this country has ever known. Brexit means Brexit – and we are going to make a success of it.” Mrs May said there was too many that “find the fact that 17 million people voted to leave the EU simply bewildering” and were trying to kill Brexit by delaying it. “They are insulting the intelligence of the British people.” She said the vote was a “once-in-a-generation to change the country for good” and asked for support for her government “and together let’s seize the day” – she believed the June vote was a desire for greater control but also reflected social divisions across the UK with people being ignored by “the privileged and powerful”. Mrs May said there would not be a “blow by blow account” of the negotiations as the Brexit negotiations took place but pledged: “When there are things to say, we will keep the country informed.” There was much talk of a ‘Hard Brexit’, moving outside the EU single market but taking control of immigration and ending an automatic free movement of people. The alternative ‘Soft Brexit’ involves access the bloc but allowing cross-border movement of EU citizens. NEGOTIATION Mrs May said Brexit was not “about negotiating all our sovereignty away again” and was not a negotiation “to establish a relationship anything like the one we have had for the last 40 years”. She added: “It is going to be an agreement between an independent, sovereign United Kingdom and the European Union.” The Prime Minister pledged: “We will seek the best deal possible as we negotiate a new agreement with the European Union. “I want it to involve free trade in goods and services. I want to give British companies the maximum freedom to trade with and operate in the single market – and let European businesses do the same here.” Brexit Secretary David Davis did have words of comfort for expats about the future – saying he believed their rights across Europe would be safeguarded. He said in his Birmingham speech: “When it comes to the negotiations, we will protect the rights of EU citizens here, so long as Britons in Europe are treated the same way – something I am absolutely sure we will be able to agree.”

A NEW 2017 calendar went on sale this week destined to put glamour back on the streets – and that’s just the gleaming chrome and paintwork of the Harley Davidson Motorcycles. by Jack Troughton The limited edition Biker Babe Calendar 2017 sells for 10€; there are 600 copies and a sell-out means 6,000€ will be shared equally between charities Make A Smile and the children’s home Preventorio de Real Gandia. And buying a copy also guarantees a unique entry into a Christmas draw and the chance to see the girls who volunteered to help the machines look their best. Following the success of the 2014 calendar, the Free Spirits Harley Davidson Enthusiasts Club decided on a follow-up to raise more money for the children’s charities. “The 2014 calendar absolutely flew off the shelf,” admitted Free Spirit’s Peter Emmett. “It is very much back by popular demand – I have been hounded by people to produce another one to collect and by girls wanting to be a Biker Babe. “Every page is sponsored so the cover price all goes to the two charities; and every calendar enters the purchaser into the Christmas raffle – with some great prizes. It has taken three months to put together and I am very pleased with the result.” Details of the list of distributors of the calendars are available by sending an email to freespiritshd@gmail.com...but they are selling fast!

Dune in autumn PHOTOGRAPHER ALEC Bettney took his camera and explored the beaches of Piles and Oliva on the first Saturday of autumn – discovering a dune regeneration project to help maintain the natural habitat. by Jack Troughton Walking the sands on a sunny afternoon in a pleasant 25 degrees Centigrade, he watched sunbathers, anglers, and a few tourists all enjoying the beach off season. He also met a lady exercising three dogs – one named Lluna, the Catalan spelling of Luna, or Moon in English. The pooches were also enjoying some off season freedom on the sand. “I also came across two jellyfish the size of dinner plates washed up on the beach and a mule enjoying a snack of new grass shoots,” said Alec. “The views in both directions were truly magnificent and the beach was a soft golden colour; the sea still warm enough for a dip.” Pictured are Lluna enjoying her freedom; two dogs making an ‘ass’ of themselves; and Gandia from Piles Beach. New born found dead

THE BODY of a new born baby was found dumped in a rubbish bin earlier this week by a homeless man looking for food. The discovery was immediately reported to the Guardia Civil who attended the scene on Tuesday night in Pilar de la Horadada. The baby was found wrapped in a blanket and is believed to have been born only a few hours earlier, weighing 3.5kg. A search has now begun to find the mother with medical personnel believing her health may be at risk as there was no sign of the placenta in the rubbish bin. They are also concerned for her mental well-being.

Born to run WHEN SCHOOLBOY Michael Fenerty skipped school to meet rock star Bruce Springsteen he got out of trouble with the authorities by getting ‘The Boss’ to sign an absence note. by Jack Troughton Philadelphia student Michael was so desperate to meet his hero he decided to take the day off – but he and his father wanted to smooth things over with the school authorities. Springsteen was in the city to promote his new autobiography ‘Born to Run’ and the pupil and his Dad, a major fan and memorabilia collector, attended a ‘meet and greet’ with the musician at a library. Michael had already seen Springsteen live but his parent wanted to follow the school rules and the youngster said an absence note was needed – so they typed one out. It read: “Dear Principal Brown, Please excuse Michael Fenerty for being late or absent today. He came to the Free Library of Philadelphia to meet me and get a copy of my book. Thanks! Very truly, Bruce Springsteen.” When asked to sign the note, the musician told the student he would have to read it carefully first; because that was how he got in trouble with his first contract. Mr Fenerty said: “Bruce said ‘I hope you don’t get into trouble’...My son was very star struck – it was a very cool experience.”

HELP VEGA Baja volunteer Pat Milligan hosted a special night with tribute band Abba Elite to raise 500€ for the charity. by Jack Troughton Pat Milligan is part of the HELP Hospital Visiting Team and spends many hours supporting patients and their families

at the Vega Baja hospital. However, feeling that she would like to do even more, she often organises fundraising events, particularly in the Catral area. And on Wednesday 28th September, Pat hosted a night with Abba Elite at SUM Constancia in Catral. It was a well supported event where everyone not only enjoyed the ever popular music of Abba but at the same time knew that they were supporting a great cause. Pat later presented HELP Vega Baja President, Michele Masson, with 500€ which will be used to help those people in need throughout the Vega Baja area. Michele said: “We are extremely fortunate that we have such a great team of volunteers and we would like to thank Pat for not only being such a dedicated volunteer with our charity but also to recognise the fundraising she does quietly in the background for so many good causes. “Volunteers are very special people and although I am here to accept the donation on behalf of the charity, there should be no mistaking that it is the tremendous efforts that go on in the background by volunteers such as Pat that ensures we are able to continue to support people in the area when they need us as we have for the past 35 years”. To find out more about HELP Vega Baja, visit their webpage at www.helpvegabaja.com or their Facebook page. Tai Chi Amigos show their moves

Thursday adventures by Jack Troughton THE JALON Valley Explorers are a small and friendly walking group which meets every week to explore the hills, valleys and coastal paths of the area. Formed a year ago, the group is setting out

again as the cooler weather arrives but hopes to attract more members to insure there are sufficient numbers to organise a walk. Walks are generally four to five hours, with breaks to enjoy the scenery and enjoy a picnic lunch. They start at 10am and usually end at a suitable watering hole so everyone can take a well-deserved drink. The group walks at a moderate pace and

its routes are suitable for everyone who is reasonably fit. The terrain makes it essential for walking boots – and walking sticks are strongly recommended. Many of the group members are ‘visitors’ and it is hoped to welcome more resident members to keep it active. For more information, call Paul or Jan on 96 640 5335 or email paulleniston@hotmail.com.

The “Tai Chi Amigos” are staging a demonstration on the dance floor in Laguna Ribs, the bar restaurant in the Arenal in Jávea on Thursday 13th October at 5.45pm. The ‘Amigos’ can be seen all summer practicing Tai Chi in the Park in Javea pueblo but in the winter they move inside. It allows them to still get together every week to enjoy the physical, mental and social benefits of performing Tai Chi with friends. An exercise for everyone whatever age or physical ability, Tai Chi improves the health of mind and body, flexibility, balance and inner strength and exercises all the muscles, joints, tendons & ligaments. So if you have always wanted to try Tai Chi or are simply curious, come along to see what it is all about and talk to people in the group, as a new beginners’ group is about to start. Everyone is welcome. For more information, phone 634 303 781 or email taichiamigos@gmail.com

How to contest, challenge or dispute a Spanish Will after the Regulation 650 2012 Inheritance Law in Spain. How to contest, challenge or dispute a Spanish Will now, after the August 2015. Contest, Challenge or dispute a Spanish Will as per the regulation 650/2012 I would like to contest my late father’s Will in Spain, who passed away recently, as I understand this is possible if he is English, was a Spanish resident and has all his real estate assets in Spain. Is that correct? Dear reader, Thank you for your query, you are right, before the European regulation 650/2012 came into effect, it was possible to claim Spanish Inheritance Rules applying to the inheritance of an English citizen, and therefore the children are entitled to 2/3 of the estate, as long as the English national was resident in Spain and has all his real estate assets in Spain. Because what we call the renvoi from English to Spanish Law, as the law that should govern the succession. NOTE: (WRITING IN THE BLUE) NOT SURE WHAT THIS MEANS. Now, after the European regulation 650/2012 came into effect, this means in relation to all deaths that take place on or from the 17th of August 2015, it would be essential to know when the Spanish Will that we want to contest or challenge was granted. If the Spanish Will was granted before the 17/8/2015, it will apply to article 83 ( Transitional provisions), and the provisions of the Will will be respected, as long as they are valid as per the rules of private international law which were in force at the time the disposition was made. In the case in which the deceased had his habitual residence or in any of the States whose nationality he possessed or in the Member State of the authority dealing with the succession, etc. NOTE: (WRITING IN THE BLUE) NOT SURE WHAT THIS MEANS. If the Spanish Will was granted on or after the 17/8/2015, the law of habitual residency of the deceased will apply unless they have expressly opted for his/her national law to apply to the inheritance. Therefore, in order to determine if a Spanish Will could be contested it would be: date of death, date when the Will was granted, time and place are the assets part of the estate. Once we can determine which law applies to the inheritance, i.e; Spanish or English Law, we could determine if it would be possible to contest the Will, and what are the grants to dispute and challenge it. If you want any further information regarding contesting a Will, contact us, we will help you. The information provided in this article is not intended to be legal advice, but merely conveys general information related to legal issues.

Too Big to Fail, Let’s Hope So Deutsche Bank has been in the headlines over the last few weeks for all the wrong reasons, dropping share price, questions over its capital adequacy and a huge DOJ fine of some 14billion USD. Do you need any more evidence that the banking crisis that started 9 years ago in itself is far from over? The only difference is now the epicentre has moved from the US to Europe and the UK. All are fast being enveloped by a perfect storm of negatives, and this time around, it is substantially the policymakers and law enforcers who are to blame. All eyes are naturally focused on the specific problems of Deutsche Bank, is it insolvent, is it possible Deutsche Bank could go the way of Lehman brothers or are we seeing the final crawl towards the nationalisation of Deutsche Bank. If necessary, Angela Merkel will bail the bank out, despite German lawmakers - including the finance ministry - continuing to refute speculation that it is preparing a backup plan. Whatever the cost, Germany is more than solvent enough to take the hit. But Deutsche is not alone, as Tidjane Thiam, chief executive of Credit Suisse, observed last week, as an entire sector, European banks are still “not really investable”. Much the same disease as afflicts Continental banks also applies to British counterparts, including Royal Bank of Scotland, Barclays and even Lloyds. The saga deals yet another blow to the already frail reputation of the banking system and may cause banks to further contract their balance sheets, perpetuating the wider economic impact of the crisis. So what can you do? First, make sure that you hold no more cash in your bank current account and or deposit account than is guaranteed ie £75,000 or €100,000, if possible keep it well under this amount and spread your risk across banks. Look at taking out some investments to diversify away from the banking system. ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Mars sextiles Neptune midweek and plays on your emotional centres with positive outcome. Charged and ready is the psychic energy which is there but always awaiting your instruction. Sadly this instruction doesn’t always come but this week see the difference that you can make and realise more the potential from within. Mercury squares on Mars as the Sun squares on Pluto thus both planets are connecting absolutely with their leaders and in a direct opposition to you. This double whammy must bring you some very mixed blessings and open your mind to what could be next if you prioritise in the days ahead. Above all, never say never, say it now! Things are much calmer now that Mercury slides into Libra and balance can be felt all around you. It has taken time for you to take a stand over something very close to your heart and it looks as if you are now going to get your way. Beware that others try to give you advice and this, above all, just isn’t what you need to have right now. Moon energies phase in from Jupiter which is conjuncted by Mercury squaring on Mars. You will feel over burdened and in need of some rest and repose to charge your batteries. Your recent reactions have caused others to react angrily, as of late, and you have now a reason not to lose your temper in any act of retaliation. As the Sun sets on Pluto do not hold back and make sure that you see things through to where they should be. Though you are seeing things through open eyes for the first time in a long run, this can be determined by others to be your having a bee in your bonnet! Determination and strength will win the day and show others what you do. You have a witty and tenacious sense of humour, and if others cannot see this then they are certainly not your friends. The Mercury square on Mars promises to bring you the changes that you have long awaited, but so too do some complications come to the fore; and these will need to be dealt with, not just swept under the carpet.

Channels of communication are open now that Mercury enters your sign. There is something that you need to say which you are afraid to, and this action stops your participation in something which needs a boost to get it off the ground. Silence can reward, but just now what you have to say will be the icing on the finest cake!

Pluto squares on the Sun, but ensures that a salient energy comes through to back you, now that the time has come. It is much better to be in the light about something, but this still has to be retained in the recess of your mind and not used until it is absolutely necessary. Time is of the essence and every dog does have his day!

Mercury is ensconced in Ceres and under the strict rule of timing; but this changes when Jupiter moves on to confront Mercury midweek. This brings you a week of challenge and for sure there will be some minor irritating changes to schedules and adjustments to your already busy timetable. Worry not, what will be will be!

You have butterflies in your stomach about something that finally comes to a head this week. You hate confrontation but this is clearly becoming an option that is more and more attractive. Moon energy generated in your opposing sign of Cancer helps you to see the negative side of something and it is this that helps to prove the positive!

Venus ensures that a relationship is back on track and is going well. Instead of wondering what happened, be grateful that you have the chance to take things to a new level, allbeit under your approval! Uranus is mightily powerful to assist you when and if you need that helping hand. When trust returns this won’t matter! Look to Virgo if you need the inspiration right now As Mercury squares on Mars a lot of that negativity is cast aside where it belongs. Surely you need something to get your teeth into right now; but do not miss messages sent to your mystic energy centres because these are matters that have a here and now, and they deserve your attention too!

Kenny, I wish I could make contact with Spirit! There is so much that I know they can help me with, but I tend to give up before I start. Marjorie P. Firstly you have to have the confidence in yourself Marjorie! If this isn’t there it could be your biggest problem in communication. I am told that as a professional that I make it look easy to make that vital first contact with Spirit. Well, this I accept, but don’t make it hard, and remember it is your personal connection that matters. Contact on this level is a truly personal thing. You cannot make a mistake nor can you say something wrong, and even if you do then Spirit understands this. You know that they can help you and I know that I can help you, so I am going to do just this. Come and see me with a view to learning in a Circle with others...you will love it!

If It’s Your Birthday This Week

See how contrary the energies you need are right now. They are awaiting your reaction and your support. It is by putting things right this astrological year that you realise the dynamic that is coming your way; to be used as you see fit!

Monte axe new boss by Andrew Atkinson

CD MONTESINOS has sacked new manager Camacho - after just two games in charge - after the Alicante-based club lost 4-1 against La Murada at the weekend in the Segunda Regional Grupo 16. A club spokesman said:”At an emergency meeting of the football club’s committee, immediately following today’s performance, and in addition to the poor display at Benijofar, the Committee has sacked Manager Camacho.”

CD Montesinos appointed Camacho this year following the shock departure of Roberto Cases after being at the helm for one season, having replaced Juampe for the 2015-16 campaign. The defeat against La Murada brought anger from sections of home fans in the 160 crowd - after a performance that has been described as ‘unacceptable’. Montesinos failed to compete, and were outplayed. Many veteran fans described the two defeats to date in the 2016-17 season have been the club’s poorest performances in recent times.

CD Montesinos have a faithful fan base - The Full Monte Supporters Club - with crowds of 400 in recent seasons attending home fixtures at The Municipal Stadium. The Vega Baja club, who suffered a double blow in the departures of Dani ORourke and Wallace this season, have yet to see club talisman, injured Brazilian striker Vazquinho in action, following his return to the club. A new manager has been lined up to replace Camacho but has yet to be publically named.

Christopher, from Surrey, is taking a year out from his busy schedule in London and while in Spain has taken a “bold decision” to invest some time in his health. He has started slimming on a programme with the Cambridge Weight Plan and attends weekly meetings with Angela DallyMascall at Reflections Bar in San Luis. In two weeks 5.6kg vanished. However, Christopher wants to help the charity gain some cash and hopes to find sponsors as he aims to shed a total of 25kg. He has already started a fitness regime to go hand in hand with the diet and will be cycling, walking and going to a gym. Anyone wanting to help Christopher – and Paul Cunningham Nurses – can call the charity office in La Marina on 96 679 0363 or call into Reflections Bar for a sponsor form.

Shakin’ Stevens, the youngest of 13 children, was born in Ely, Cardiff, and worked in the building trade having previously been a coal miner. In the mid-1960s, he formed his first amateur rock and roll band with school pals and became its vocalist and frontman. Originally named The Olympics, then The Cossacks, the short-lived band finally became The Denims and performed gigs in the local Cardiff and South Wales area. They got a recording deal in 1970, and must´ve had a patient record company as it took 10 years for him to be an overnight sensation, albeit after Shaky went solo. While the 80´s spawned New Romantics, Big Shoulders and Ageing Punks, Shakin Stevens kept the jive-lovers busy with ´This Ole House´ and ´Green Door.´ The good news is he´s heading out on a full-blooded UK tour next year. Don’t forget Spain SHAKY!

Q: Is Noelie ready for the funny farm? Ans: ? Ilford, Essex boy Noel Edmunds, aged just 20, turned down an offer of a place at the University of Surrey in favour of a job as a newsreader on Radio Luxembourg, and has since gone on to have a spectacular career in broadcasting. It took off big-time when he ran The Radio 1 Breakfast show ´73 - ´78, followed shortly after by the superb Noel´s House Party, although many of us have still not forgiven him for Mr Blobby! On Monday, 31 October 2005 he presented Deal or No Deal for Channel 4, and at £3 million a season, became one of the highest paid personalities on UK television. The show is to be axed after this coming season, and you´re not going to believe what he´s come up with next! He´s set up a service via his site noel.world where you can fill in a form about your pet and he’ll give them a buzz! ... Really!! It asks for the pet’s breed, interests, and their phone number! Sounds like Noel´s been having too many dinners with Mr Blobby!

Sir Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr recently enjoyed a mini Beatles reunion at the premiere of a new documentary The Beatles: Eight Days A Week – The Touring Years, directed by Ron Howard, aka ´Richie´ from big USTV show Happy Days. The movie charts The Beatles´ live gigs and meteoric rise to fame in the ’60s. Macca said “We’re getting great memories of playing with John and George; it’s very emotional and very special to see that again.” Ringo described their enduring fame as ‘beautiful’ before adding ‘People love the Beatles.´ Interestingly Paul wore the same jacket he donned for the premiere of A Hard Day’s Night in 1964 at the event. Yoko Ono and George Harrison’s widow Olivia also attended the screening at London’s Odeon Leicester Square, but quite rightly the film’s world premiere took place in Liverpool. Fab! Really Fab! Dame Angela Lansbury voiced Mrs Potts, the castle cook that turned into a teapot, in the 1991 animated film ´Beauty and The Beast,´ and she surprised many when she paid an impromptu visit last week to the film’s 25th anniversary showing in New York. The surprise consisted of her not only turning up, but taking to the stage and singing the Oscar-winning hit song ´Beauty and the Beast´ from the much loved movie. A live action remake is currently in production and will star English actors Emma Watson as heroine Belle and Downton Abbey star Dan Stevens from Croydon in Surrey as the Beast. As the film’s success has been built on the spectacular animation brought for us by Disney Productions is this s tinker too far? In the meanwhile watch Dame Angela Lansbury sings Beauty and the Beast at the 25th Anniversary Screening.

The subject of weight loss will always catch our attention, but focusing on Timothy Spall as the person shedding the pounds is a serious surprise. Timothy was in his mid-twenties when fame came a-knocking in ITV comedy-drama ´Auf Wiedersehen Pet´ when he played Barrie, the much put upon electrician in that glorious comedy drama of the 80´s. Timothy recently attended the 73rd annual Venice Film Festival and there he was showing off his very noticeable weight loss and ´looking amazing´ according to the report I read. The actors shape has, to my mind, been the corner stone of his quite marvellous career, having played roles that range from Oliver´s Mr Bumble to Peter Pettigrew in the “Harry Potter” films, ´ and looking like a stick insect might be a teensy weensy error Barrie baby! If it’s a health issue Tim your good, if it’s not … Eat the pies!

Sara Bell life&leis re ask Sara u ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// by

Life Coach

WITH A background in family and matrimonial mediation, Life Coach Sara Bell helps Readers with their daily worries. If you are having difficulties with relationships, family, work or any other aspect of your life, then help is at hand.

Should I tell him? I am a mature lady, and retired to Spain after my divorce. I met a lovely man and we are getting serious. I think he may ask me about my past and how many men I have had relationships with. I feel a bit bad about how many partners I’d had when I was young. I was a hippy child and free love was the thing. I’ve since calmed down a bit though! I want to be honest, but I don’t want him to think I was a tramp in case he has a problem with that. If you are both sharing experiences, then you might find that he may also have enjoyed himself with the ladies. If the subject comes up, there’s no need to be specific. Bridesmaid betrayal My bridesmaid tried to spoil my wedding and turned up in a totally different dress to the one chosen for her. It was the right colour, so she blended in and no one said anything, but she deliberately turned up late already dressed, so that nothing could be done. Not only that, the dress was practically a replica of my wedding dress. It was obvious that she’d pulled a fast one, and my other bridesmaids consoled me on the day, but I will never forgive her. She also got drunk and made a show of herself at the reception. I haven’t said anything to her about it, I just pretended I hadn’t noticed, but I am furious. I think you are well rid of this so-called friend. What she did was pretty unforgivable. It sounds like she did all of these things intentionally, perhaps out of jealousy. If I were in your shoes, I wouldn’t have anything more to do with her. I think she was looking for a reaction from you, so you were right not to give her one.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin

Conditional sentences – some tricks This week is the turn of the Conditional tense.

You may well be wondering how many tenses there are in Spanish and the answer is, absolutely loads. There are far more tenses than any language could reasonably need and therefore we can often get away with two or three alternatives to say the same, or pretty much the same, thing. That is meant to encourage you rather than the opposite, but that might partly depend on how anal you are about being “correct”. That’s basically your problem though! Anyway, this week’s tense is relatively acceptable in as much as we can form it, and translate it, fairly easily. There is a fiddly bit about how to use it which I’ll mention at the end. Firstly, we’ll look at the formation of the tense, which is based on the same principle as the Future Simple. Remember that the future simple tense adds its endings on to the whole infinitive of the verb (hablar – hablaré etc.) Well, the conditional does exactly the same thing, and also has the same endings in all three verb groups, again like the future simple. Here are the endings: - ía

- íamos - ías - íais - ía - ían

So name any old verb and we’ll put it into the conditional. What about an “er” verb for a change? For example “leer” (to read). As far as the pronunciation is concerned, the most important thing to remember is to place the emphasis where the accent is, in each case over the letter “i”. Leería Leeríamos Leerías Leeríais Leería Leerían The irregular ones are exactly the same as in the future simple tense. For example: Decir – diría; hacer – haría; poder – podría, poner – pondría; querer – querría; saber – sabría; salir – saldría; tener – tendría; valer – valdría; venir – vendría. Finally, how do we use the conditional tense? Well, as I mentioned last week, the clue is in the name. It is called “conditional” because its use implies the existence of a condition. “I would read the book ….. if it were interesting; if I had the time”. “Leería el libro … si (if). And now we come across a

new problem, which is that the “if” clause (if it were, if I had etc.) takes us into yet another tense, and furthermore one of the hardest ones of all, namely the imperfect subjunctive - aaarrrghhhh!! However, do not panic, simply apply the KISS principle (Keep It Simple Stupid) and find a

way round it, using the word “pero” (but). “I would read the book, but it isn’t interesting” (Leería el libro, pero no es interesante). “I would read the book, but I haven’t got time” (Leería el libro, pero no tengo tiempo). I don’t know what you’d do without me; you would be very confused! - Estaríais muy confundidos.

Blast Brilliant Blessed Brian ONE YEAR AGO TODAY my first ramble appeared in the RTN. What a fine record of unremitting loyalty and devotion to duty. Where’s my gold watch? Also this month the Current & Final Mrs. Ashley and I are – celebrating??? - our silver wedding anniversary. This of course raises the thorny issue of an appropriate present. On a first anniversary the traditional gift should be paper & with that in mind on the day 1992 I gave my perky poppet, not one, but 6 rolls of wallpaper – thoughtful & practical as she had been banging on about decorating the spare room. The reaction was not exactly what I expected – it was as underwhelming as a wet Wednesday in Woebegone Worthing. Now I’m worried about the 25 year job – silver – hum! Not sure a gift pack of tin foil is going to crack it. Proof if proof were needed I’m not much cop at the minutiae of marriage unlike Blessed Brian who was introduced to me by an emailing RTN reader–Andrew. Thank you mi amigo, I’ll leave it to you as it’s time for my nap. A man hails a passing taxi – he jumps in and the cabby says “Perfect timing, you’re just like Brian.”Passenger; “Who?” Cabby; “Brian he’s the guy who did everything right all the time. Like me coming along when you needed a cab, things like that happened to Brian all the time.” Passenger; “Yes but things can’t work out 100% all the time.”Cabby; They did with Brian, a terrific athlete, he could have won a Grand Slam at tennis, he could golf with the pros, box with the best, be a Galáctico with Real Madrid. An entertainer par excellence, he sang like Pavarotti, danced like Astaire, and you should have heard him play the piano – Liberace? pah!” Passenger; “Blow me down he sounds like someone very special.”Cabby; “There’s more – he had a memory like a computer, he never forgot an anniversary or birthday. Brian knew all about fine wines and dining. He knew how to treat a lady and never answered her back, even if she was in the wrong. He was always dressed immaculately with shiny shoes. He never made a mistake, nobody measured up to Brian.” Passenger; “An amazing chap – how did you meet him?”Cabby; Well I never actually met Brian- he died. I’m married to his ruddy widow.” If you have similar whimsical puckish tales email; ashleybobble@hotmail.com

Rain-or-shine leg of lamb Butterflying your lamb not only means it cooks quicker, but it can be barbecued as well as roasted Ingredients 1 leg of lamb, about 2kg/4lb 8oz, butterflied 2 tbsp rapeseed oil 2 tsp caraway seed, crushed 1 tbsp chopped thyme leaf 1 large bunch parsley, chopped Method 1. Take the lamb out of the fridge an hour or so before cooking to allow it to come up to room temperature. Heat oven to 220C/200C fan/gas 7 or light the barbecue. Mix together the oil, caraway seeds, thyme and parsley with lots of salt and pepper. Smear this all over the lamb, rubbing it well into the meat. You can do this up to a day before. 2. If you are cooking the meat on the barbecue, wait until the fire has died down and the coals are white and glowing. Lay the meat, skin-side down, onto the bars and cook for 15 mins. Flip over and cook for a further 15 mins for slightly pink lamb, or 5 mins longer if you want the meat well done. Remove and leave to rest on a tray, covered with foil, for at least 15 mins. To cook the lamb in the oven, place it on a large shallow baking tray, cook for 15 mins, then turn down the oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4 and cook for a further 15 mins. Leave to rest for 15 mins. Once the meat has rested, slice it up and pour over any juices from the resting tray.

Eye Care Advice for World Sight Day World Sight Day (WSD) is an annual day of awareness to focus global attention on blindness and vision impairment. World Sight Day 2016 is on 13 October 2016 and the theme is Universal Eye Health. In order to support this important initiative and raise public awareness of blindness and vision impairment as major international public health issues, Specsavers Opticas want to share important information about impaired vision and offer advice on how everyone can take an active role in looking after their eye health. Visual Impairment Facts There are approximately 285 million people worldwide who live with impaired vision and blindness. Of these, 39 million people are blind and 246 million have moderate or severe visual impairment, yet 80% of visual impairment is avoidable through treatment and protective measures. According to a report by Specsavers and the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB), there are currently more than two million people in the UK living with sight loss, which is significant enough to impact their daily lives. Nearly half of all cases are preventable. This figure is set to rise to 2.7 million by 2030 due to the UK’s ageing demographic. According to a study by Spain’s National Institute of Statistics in 2008, 979,200 people are suffering a visual disability in Spain. This figure is increasing every day, and there are now over 72,000 ONCE members who are classed as legally blind. The leading causes of avoidable blindness are: Cataracts

Glaucoma Age Related Macular Degeneration Diabetic Retinopathy All of these conditions and many others can be easily identified with a complete eye test and early diagnosis is crucial to effective treatment and avoiding permanent vision loss. If necessary, the optometrist will refer you directly for further medical examination to an Ophthalmologist or doctor. -MOREHow to Protect Your Sight Get your eyes tested regularly – every year for children, over 70s and people with family history of eye complaints and every two years for those with no issues Eat a healthy diet – A diet full of the following foods has been shown to help reduce the occurrence of Age-related Macular Degeneration; chicken, saffron, dark green leafy vegetables, peppers, broccoli, pumpkin, yams, squash and sweet potatoes, apricots and citrus fruits, sardines and nuts. Know the signs – Being aware of the symptoms of these common conditions will help you identify them quickly. Take action - Don’t delay in seeking professional help if you do notice any changes, the quicker any condition is identified the easier it is to treat. World Sight Day 2016 will be marked in all Specsavers’ Opticas stores with eye health information available to take away and experts on hand to answer any questions. They are also offering free eye tests to encourage everyone to get their eyes tested. Visit www.specsavers.es for more advice and information about caring for your eyes and to find your nearest store.

What does it mean implants without surgery? At Sdent Dental Clinic we think that dental implants are a great alternative to loose, poor fitting dentures wich can cause embarrassing situations. Implants bond to the jaw, much like the root of a natural tooth, and permanently replace a lost tooth. With the use of advanced 3D technology, guided surgery allows us to place the implants in a previously planned area in its exact place and with greater accuracy. This approach has significantly simplified the procedure. This approach has significantly simplified the procedure.

How do you put in the implant without surgery? Without cutting, without stitchig and whitout bleeding. With exact measurements calculated by advanced 3D technology, and no need to cut through the gums, sutures ( or stitches ) are hardly ever needed. The dental implant program used in Sdent Dental Clinic is so exact that all of the gum tissue that is extracted during the treatment is replaced with the implant. This coupled with the high quality of our German made implants, guarantees good results.

Is it a painful procedure? Since the gum are not cut, the intervention is much smoother that the traditional one, and it is less painful than a tooth extraction. It is only necessary to use a local anesthetic and patients are surprised at how quick and painless the procedure is. What other advantages has? It saves a lot of time. A major concern of patients is the idea of having their mouths open for a long time throughout the surgery. It prevents tissue trauma, bleeding and post-surgical discomfort. Recovery is quick (back to normal after the surgery). It allows surgeons to put crowns or dentures in the most ideal and aesthetic positions. -In two weeks we´ll talk about aesthetic venneers and whitening. You can send any questions to: info@sdent.es

Alfaz fantasy football league by patricia thompson

Well after 3 weeks of goals galore the Premier League slowed down by scoring the lowest number of goals since the start of the Season. The 1 Monday Night game and a full Premier League at the weekend gave the Alfaz Fantasy Football League only 22 goals,6 clean sheets,45 yellow cards and I’m pleased to report the Referees kept their red cards in their pocket.Liverpool’s James Milner scored his 3rd penalty in 2 weeks while Spurs Lamela had to watch Manchester City’s new goalkeeper Bravo save his penalty. One of our Junior teams Ant & Brad became the 5th team this Season to reach the summit of the A.F.F.L. when they climbed up 5 places to claim the number one spot. They are only 2 points ahead of Terry’s Hugonaughts United then comes Eric’s in form Peaky Blinders.Last weeks leaders Andrew’s Big Tymers have now slipped down to 5th position. At the very foot of the table we have Kevin’s team El Portet Elite sinking fast as they are now 25 points adrift of Glenda’s Spanish Smoggies. Julie’s team The Gers top our Mark Cater Ladies Section for the 1st time and are the new leaders of this Division with a slender 1 point advantage over Karen’s Ceasar’s Blackcats. Tracey’s Brownies Boys & Debbie’s Foxy Filberts are well in contention in 3rd & 4th position. At the bottom end of the

table Spanish Smoggies have dropped 16 points behind Jo Jo wants a Dog.The Gers won last Month’s 20 euro voucher which is sponsored by Quick Save the only British Supermarket in Albir and they have got off to a flying start this Month as well by taking a 6 point lead over Karen’s Florida Pearls. Eric’s team Peaky Blinders have kept hold of the top spot of our Leonard Knowles Construction Golden Boot League courtesy of Arsenal’s Koscielny last minute handled goal against luckless Burnley. Dave’s Juke Box Mackems are 7 points behind the leaders. At the other end of the scale El Portet Elite are only 1 point behind Mitchell’s Suplex City. In our U.K.T.V.Spain Junior League Ant & Brad are romping away at the top with a large 17 point advantage over Teigar’s Tigers while at the bottom Charlotte’s Arm Wavers United face a formidable task of catching up Nathan’s F2 Freestylers who are 18 points ahead. The 2 teams going into our Monthly Draw for a case of wine which is sponsored Wyn at Wyndhams are Lenny’s Spreaders who top scored with 50 points and our lowest scoring team Angie’s Blues who didn’t bother the scorer.August’s winner was Stephen’s team Shrek is Life. Manager of the Month is being kindly sponsored by Debbie & Paul at Our Plaice in the Sun Restaurant in Albir who provide a very special Fish & Chips which you can eat in or take away. The early doors leaders are Lenny’s Spreaders who

have a slight 1 point lead over Joanna’s Coblanca Cruisers.Chris’s Always Hoping and Wayne’s Gunnawinthisyear are both joint 3rd just 2 points behind the leaders. Johnny’s Rockets have won this weeks Breakfast for 2 sponsored by Jo & Pete at the 2C’s in Alfaz after moving up 77 places to Number 67 in the main League. At the time of going to Press I have not had time to collate all the scores of our Preliminary Round of our RTN K.O.Cup Competition but I do know that there was 2 very close ties which saw Try Try Again beat The Special Ones by 7-6 and the other tight game was between No Chance(31) and Hairy Triangle(30).By the time you read this all the results will be up on our website which is www.alfazffl.com. We have a rest now for the International Break lets hope all our Players come back fit and well and are ready to go again.

Peugeot 108 Push button starts are characteristic of older cars but they are increasingly making a come back. The latest Peugeot 108 city car incorporates one, together with keyless entry. This means that as long as the key is in the driver’s pocket, they can open the car and drive off (after putting their foot on the clutch and pushing start). One wet Wednesday morning when I take eldest daughter Harriett to school there is, all of a sudden, a frighteningly loud beep, which repeats for a few minutes. I don’t want to be late so I ignore it. We arrive some 10 minutes later in one piece with no punctures. Perplexed, I forget all about it until I return and push the start button. Only to find that a stop sign appears in capital letters on the dashboard. We are not going anywhere. Resisting the urge to phone the AA, I reach for the glovebox and delve into the user manual. Remaining calm I push the buttons on the keyfob together with the start button and thankfully am able to start the engine. Whether this is an electrical fault I do not know but the experience is one I do not wish to repeat. Give me a key ignition any day. Let’s get one other gripe out of the way. On installing my daughter’s cumbersome car seat in the rear it is clear that the 108 is just a tad too small for our family. Thank goodness we’re only driving short distances. Heidi would prefer my seat to be pushed further forward but I insist I can’t drive with my knees round my neck. I can feel her feet massaging the base of my spine through the thin seat. I keep reminding myself that this is a city car, not one for the family as such.

Aside from this there’s a good driving position and like its predecessor it’s enjoyable to drive, helped by the fact that it is quite low to the ground. I really do like this feisty little car that will reach 60mph from standstill in 11 seconds. The little Pug with its three cylinders roars with a slightly deeper rumble than your average lawnmower and it makes fast progress. The bars on the fuel gauge just do not seem to deplete, no matter how demanding the driving. It will reach just over 60mph in second gear… Because I am testing the Top! version it has an electric fabric roof, which no matter what the weather, is a delight to open (just turn up the heating if it’s cold outside). That roof also enables large items to be easily transported, such as a bath, for instance... The 108 replaces the much loved and successful 107 (launched in 2005 and in production until 2014). I have fond memories of driving the 107 across Europe. When my wife and I were married in Bulgaria, our little blue 107 even had wedding ribbon on the bonnet. It was the glass tailgate that was unique at the time and I am pleased to see that this has been carried over to the 108. During this test it really comes home to me just how overcrowded the UK has become. Drive during the day and you might as well not bother; the queues, the tailbacks and the learner drivers clogging up the road network. Yes, 20 years ago I was a learner driver but there were far fewer cars on the roads. Today, a 10 mile journey on B and C roads takes me close to an hour to travel during the day. Yet at night time it

can be achieved in well under half that time. This car excites me because it is visually very attractive, helped by its diamond white exterior and finished to a good standard. I like the chrome grille, door handles and wing mirrors. It adds a touch of class and promotes a welcome resurgence in its use. Peugeot has really struck gold with its tiny and elegant 108. Sticking rigidly to three criteria: affordable, modern and stylish it is a joy to behold. Overall, the goal of presenting a sophisticated and premium feel in a small car has been achieved. Model tested: Peugeot 108 Allure 1.2 Top! 5dr New price: £12,495 Engine: 1.2-litre 3 cylinder petrol Power: 82bhp 0-60mph: 11secs Top speed: 106mph Economy: Over 50mpg Watch the video at www.testdrives.biz
