EXPATS CONTINUE to make their mark on life in Spain unselfishly giving their time whether it’s at work, rest or play and the launch of a new research lab in the battle against cancer – funded by charity – deservedly makes the front page. ‘All for one and one for all’ is the unforgettable battle cry of the Three Musketeers and makes an excellent headline to describe the victory of three modern day heroes in seeing an invaluable project to a happy ending. At RTN Towers we try and record the efforts of all charities. This one is very special, over 245,000€ donated through Cancer Care Javea and its ECMOR project. Yesterday was ‘Dress Up Thursday’ in Spain’s most famous resort and a day when everyone climbs inside a colourful fancy dress and hits the streets for a big party, there is also (naturally) a bit of fund-raising for good causes along the way. And anyone with time on their hands might consider volunteering to help a charity out. The mission – backed by the British Embassy - is to combine with Spanish counterparts and help out an aging population that spreads across nationalities.

Picture perfect PHOTOGRAPHERS FROM the Vera Photo Group have launched a new exhibition of their work at the La Fuente Art Centre in Mojacar – and the 200 pictures and slides can be viewed until Wednesday 30th November. by Jack Troughton The town is hosting the exhibition for the fourth successive year and 26 members if the club have work on show. The aim of the annual event is to show the photographers’ best works and demonstrate their progress with a camera. And the aim of those taking part is to capture different aspects of humanity and the world geography and to both entertain and challenge with hidden messages and images. The opening was attended by the Mayor of Mojácar Rosmari Cano, and Raquel Belmonte, Councillor for Culture, who both showed their fascination in the pictures and the
way they were produced. Stan Roberts, an enthusiastic amateur photographer, jazz lover and passionate drummer founded the club six years ago. He was able to encourage two friends to think of creating an association to debate, learn and improve anything related to the world of photography. The three friends were quickly able to attract more members – Vera Photo Club now has more than 70 and it is the largest in Almeria. One of the founders, Rod Westwood, a professional fashion photographer is now President of a thriving club made up of members of all skill levels, from professionals to beginners.

Good mooning
AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHER Christopher Pile is celebrating his luck in capturing an Alicante-bound airliner on Tuesday as it crossed in front of the ‘super moon’. by Jack Troughton
He took three quick shots of the jet; just one picture had the plane crossing the face of the moon in what Christopher called “a direct hit” with his Nikon D3200. The family run the ‘casa rural’ Grapevine Manor near Monovar, in sight of the approach flight path for jets landing at Alicante. And delighted RTN reader Christopher said: “I have read of people trying to get a shot like this of the moon for years without success, and I managed it at my first attempt. Beginner’s luck! A bit like someone playing golf for the first time and getting a ‘hole in one’.” He took some pictures of the super moon on Monday night but found no detail of the lunar surface and it simply looked like a bright circle in the sky – so he researched how to approach the task on Tuesday with advice from the professionals via the internet. Christopher set up his equipment at around 5pm, using a tripod, a 300mm lens, and a shutter speed of 1/250 sec, an aperture of F5.6, and film speed of ISO 800. He believed there was a “slim chance” of catching a plane near the moon after it appeared two hours later – an aircraft appeared at 7.57pm but was too low and the clouds started to gather. However, as another airliner approached, the clouds “miraculously” parted and it made a direct crossing across the moon and he took three rapid frames, just one with the plane in front of it. Christopher and daughter Jenny have since identified EasyJet flight U26703 from Belfast to Alicante. The photos were taken at 8.09pm – the plane landed at 8.19pm. “I am sure the passengers and flight crew would love to see this picture of their flight in front of the super moon; a once in a lifetime experience,” he said. The bed and breakfast Grapevine Manor has its own website, www.grapevinemanor.co.uk with other photos taken by Christopher of the area.
And one for all... DETERMINED TRIO ‘The Three Musketeers’ celebrated a major victory in the battle against cancer on Tuesday when a new specialised laboratory was officially unveiled. by jack troughton State of the art equipment has been installed at Denia Hospital where the ground-breaking Laboratory of Molecular Oncology is based – thanks to 245,000€ charity investment to date. And was a celebration for the three co-ordinators of ECMOR, Eileen and Terry Saville and the hospital’s senior oncologist Joan Gasent – unofficially the Musketeers - who had fought for eight years to get the project up and running. The English Cathedra of Modern Oncology Research is part of Cancer Care Javea, and the money has been raised through its charity shops, donations and fund-raising. The laboratory is a unique collaboration between Cancer Care, the CEU Cardenal Herrera University in Valencia, and Marina Salud, which runs the hospital. And the project also involves the CEU collaborating directly with the University of Alicante – believed to be the first time two universities have joined together for research. At the laboratory a sequencer machine will analyse people´s DNA and samples of their tumour. The aim is to personalise treatment so patients are only treated with effective drugs to attack a cancer, rather than the ‘atomic bomb’ approach. Data will be shared with other scientists around the world in the international fight against the disease. The project is also seen as an expat “legacy” to Spanish hosts. JOURNEY At the opening, Eileen Saville said: “We are finally at the end of a very long journey that started some eight years ago with the help of very important people and their support, together we have realised a dream that we originally thought was impossible.” She said Cancer Care was proud of its involvement – and its motto: “Living for today with hope for tomorrow” – without the charity this would not have been possible. “It is hoped now that ECMOR is established people and business will be encouraged to donate and we hope this idea will grow into cancer research across Spain. “”We have an English saying, from small acorns magnificent acorns grow and we hope this cancer research will grow into a magnificent research organisation.” ECMOR was born eight years ago when Cancer Care President Irene Ellis MBE and a group of volunteers visited the old hospital in Denia and offered to buy new chairs for the waiting room – however, Dr Gasent inspired her with details of a special machine that could help create effective and less harmful treatments for cancer. Terry Saville explained: “At that time Irene involved us and we went to meet the doctor. He asked how much money we had – we looked at each other and I said ‘I reckon about 100,000€. “Dr Gasent said ‘in that case, what I really, really want is a sequencer machine to help patients.” However, establishing a laboratory with the involvement of universities to carry out scientific research proved to be a bureaucratic and political nightmare dealing with a succession of different educational and medical bodies. “We became the Three Musketeers because we had to fight so many battles,” added Eileen. “We had to be like a dog with a bone to finish what we had started.” Pictured is Juan Ramon Berenguer the biotechnologist leading the multidisciplinary laboratory team conducting the genetic research at Denia.

Changing tourism BUSINESSMEN AND tourism professionals met in Mojacar to discuss the changing face of tourism and how to adapt to meet the challenge. by Jack Troughton The town was chosen as the heart of the industry in Almeria’s Levante region and the ‘Active Tourism’ conference was opened by Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Tourism Emmanual Aguero. And specialist Francisco Javier García Melgares, who has more than 15 years of experience in consulting and training in the tourism field, was responsible for pointing out current issues. He also underlined the main changes affecting the sector; such as consumer preferences, new ways of interacting, and competition from new destinations. Analysing and targeting all the potential tools to adapt to the changes, with the objective of making the most of each locality and the seasonality of the sector were, the key points of the conference. Mr Aguero also pointed out the importance of all the sectors involved working together for their joint benefit. He said the Mojácar Tourism Department had frequent meetings where changes were identified, incorporated and encouraged. He added a good example in the fight against seasonality was in sporting and cultural tourism, which has led to a 25% increase of ‘out of season’ visitors to Mojácar.
Paws steps into Christmas
ANIMAL CHARITY Paws-Patas invites everyone to enjoy some festive fun at its popular Christmas Fair from noon on Saturday 26th November. The Stables in Mojacar Playa will be packed with stalls for the successful seasonal event for the charity. Entrance is 1€, although youngsters under 12 go free. There will be stalls selling greetings and Christmas cards; homemade cakes; ceramics; Christmas goodies; gifts; toys and much more. And visitors can enjoy tombola, a raffle and competitions; while refreshments include mulled wine and burgers.
Kids have the last laugh by Jack Troughton YOUNGSTERS AT Mojacar’s Rey Alabez Secondary School saw the funny side when they took part in a ‘Laughter Therapy workshop.
Organised by the town hall and the Diputacion de Almeria, the school welcomed the educational company ‘Al Alba’ to introduce the psychotherapy course which aims to introduce the emotional benefits of laughing. The technique is practised in a group and takes advantage of the “contagious effect” of laughing – and how laughing with others is different to laughing alone. The sessions work by showing how a sense of humour is an important lynchpin to optimism; helping young people to simplify and solve problems, while getting to learn more about themselves and their companions. More than 50 students attended the unique workshops, which introduced the most advanced techniques of laughter therapy. The workshops took place without the presence of teachers, in order to guarantee a spontaneous reaction amongst the youngsters. The smiling faces of the students as they left showing the success of the session.
Remembrance Sunday in Mojacar PIPER DAVID Weir played before the Mojacar Royal British Legion’s Remembrance Service for the final time before returning to the UK. The service at the St Pascual Anglican Church in the town was attended by 100 people and taken by locum priest Father Keith. The branch’s standard was paraded by Mick Coote and Chairman Andrew Richardson laid a wreath in memory of members of the Armed Force who lost their lives in conflicts around the globe. And after the service, 64 people joined together for lunch at Sensations Restaurant.

Brakes on Jeremy Clarkson tale GERMAN POLICE are questioning television presenter Jeremy Clarkson’s claim he was stopped boarding a UK-bound flight by an airport employee over a controversial 2014 Top Gear programme. A police spokesman said it was not “comprehensible” to link Clarkson’s inability to get on the plane at Stuttgart Airport with an incident in Argentina – when there were protests after a car’s number plate appeared to refer to the Falklands War. And Clarkson claimed the airport worker had sworn and said he was from the South American country before he stopped the presenter flying. In an article in The Sun, Clarkson said he was waiting to get on the aircraft with ex-Top Gear colleagues James May and Richard Hammond when the dispute took place.
7
The presenter, who writes a column for the tabloid, said in the incident Manuel Pereira swore at him and marched off “looking pleased with himself” after stopping him boarding. However, police say the TV star and his crew were in the lounge – they had been filming for new show The Grand Tour - and did not hear calls for the delayed London flight and there was a “verbal dispute” at the gate. A spokesman for the airport said because of the late arrival to board, their luggage had been removed from the aircraft’s hold and names removed from the passenger list. “At this point there was no chance of boarding, even if the passengers show up,” he added. Later Mr Pereira maintained he was professional at all times – he even confirmed he was Spanish and not an Argentinian national.

Cold sparks new protest by Jack Troughton ANGRY PENSIONER Albert Fereday has picked up his pen again to campaign over the axe falling on winter fuel payments to elderly expats living in Spain.
At the age of 88 and living in Benidorm, he believes the British Government’s controversial temperature test and the decision to end payments to ‘warm´ countries in Europe is illegal. And following Brexit, Albert wants to organise a petition to send to Prime Minister Theresa May – and a fighting fund to prosecute Iain Duncan Smith who swung the axe on the benefit last year while Secretary of State for Works and Pensions. “I’m here in Spain and the fire is on…I’m an old man and I’m cold,” Albert, originally from the West Midlands, said this week. He would have normally received £300. He said he had paid his dues all his life, leaving school as a 14-year-old, starting work in a foundry at 16. “I have, all my life, paid income tax to the government and now they tell me that I am not entitled to what others receive – because I live in Spain.” And Albert said because Britain was leaving the European Union the matter should be dealt with in the UK as previous rules were “now obsolete” – although he did support the former civil servant and expat Roger Boaden who was challenging the rule change in Brussels. “I think we as pensioners have two choices. First of all to start petitioning the Houses of Parliament where this law was passed,” he said. “Secondly, should this fail, to start a fighting fund by subscription to engage a top lawyer if we want to sue the government over the damage and inconvenience it has caused pensioners.” A great-grandfather, Albert says there were enough pensioners in the Costa Blanca to draw up a powerful petition. “And this law will affect everyone as they get older and become a pensioner,” he said. “This is a very important action for justice for all. “And I would like to remind all those MPs in Parliament that they are there to represent people not to pursue their own beliefs. The people put them in and people can remove them.” He said the political elite were too busy “riding the gravy train” and should listen to ordinary people who had a real grievance.

Volunteers needed THE RED Cross and English-speaking charities plan to work more closely across communities but all agree they need more volunteers. by Jack Troughton The British Consulate and Pedro Dominguez – the new Red Cross European Residents’ Coordinator – met with charity representatives in Calpe and Torrevieja to introduce local Red Cross groups. All are keen to collaborate and were unanimous in underlining their main need – new faces to join their teams. The initiative has come a year after the British Embassy and the Red Cross signed an agreement to take new steps to encourage local groups and charities to cooperate with each other. One service discussed was how to get more vulnerable Brits to use ‘teleasistencia’; the Red Cross ‘panic alarm’ service. This allows ‘at risk’ people to continue to live independently by allowing them to call for help when needed. Many British nationals do not know the Red Cross offers the valuable service in English. It is more than an emergency button; volunteers will also carry out welfare checks so users do not become isolated.
Following the meeting, British Vice Consul in Alicante, Sara Munsterhjelm said: “A year from signing the agreement to work more closely with the Red Cross, it is fantastic that they have now employed a full time English speaking member of staff to work with European residents. “The benefits to the Red Cross and the English speaking charities from working together are clear – the charities can benefit from the Red Cross’ knowledge and infrastructure, and the English speaking charities can help the Red Cross reach vulnerable British nationals and give support with fundraising.” Pedro took note of all the ideas that came up in the meeting, especially the cry for more volunteers. He said “I’m excited about this new role and can’t wait to get on the road to work with all the different associations. “I would encourage anyone who is thinking about volunteering to get in touch with the Red Cross or any one of the charities. It’s a great way to get involved and to integrate into the local community.” Pictured are Red Cross and charity volunteers at the meeting in Torrevieja.

The ceremony included readings by various members and the laying of a wreath and other mementos at the base of a cherry tree planted last year by the Humanists of Murcia. And after the remembrance ceremony, everyone gathered for coffee at Cafe Calle Delicias in Mazarron.

HUNDREDS OF people and their dogs joined Walnut the Whippet on the 18-year-old pet’s last walk with owner Mark Woods. by Jack Troughton Mark carried his beloved dog – they have been together since Walnut was a puppy – wrapped in a blanket along his favourite walk along Porth Beach in Newquay. Because of the dog’s deteriorating health, Mark had made the heartbreaking decision to put him to sleep on Saturday but asked for people to join them earlier for a “celebration of Walnut”. The appeal and pictures of the pair went viral on social media and coordinated ‘Walnut Walks’ took place as far away as Australia before the pet’s “final sleep.” Mark, who has three other whippets, took Thursday and Friday to spend time with his best friend, feeding him favourite custard cremes. He said they had “been through a lot together”, including two marriages, three engagements and a move from London to Cornwall. He was joined by his wife Lisa and the whippets for the final walk and was “flabbergasted” to be surrounded by well wishers. Mark said: “I got as message from a guy who really put his finger on it, he said how dogs really bring the best out in people, and then people do the best things.” Then, after their last stroll as man and dog, it was time to say goodbye. Mark later confirmed that Walnut had died at 11.56am. He said: “The family and our three whippets Monty, Nelson and Charlie were also in the room. He went very quickly and in my arms. I am writing this post because I owe it to everyone who has supported myself, my family and most importantly Walnut. “Thank you to the hundreds of people that attended this walk this morning and to all those that had their own walks with their beloved pets at 9.30am all around the world. “I also want to thank the wonderful people of Newquay for their support which I will never forget as long as I live. God bless you all.”

Captain’s Day hole in one GUEST PAT O’Brien sank his second hole in one at Campoamar Golf Club playing with La Siesta Golf Society. by Jack Troughton The success helped made the society’s Captain’s Day 2016 a little more special. Everyone raised a glass to celebrate his success at Hole 6 – Pat, who usually plays at the Mahon Golf Club in Ireland’s Cork City, previously potted a hole in one while playing with the society at the 15th Hole. A full field turned out to play and the course was in excellent condition, while proving to be a tough challenge on the day as was reflected in the scores. And the golf was followed by a black tie dinner dance in the main club house, and the society again thanked the staff for the friendly and efficient service members have enjoyed for 26 years at Campoamar. The results of the day were: Division 1, first Gerry Gibson, 33 points (on handicap 6); second John Pritlove, 33 points (on handicap 11); third Adrian Mosley, 33 points (on handicap 16). Division 2: first, Vivian O’Gorman, 36 points; second Alan Navin, 33 points; third John Day, 32 points. Best guest score, Nuala Harrington, 32 points. The overall winner on the day was Vivian O’Gorman. Group winners are pictured and prizes were awarded by the Captain Harry Pearson and the Vice Captain Mike O’Regan. Anyone wishing to play with La Siesta should call the Captain on 646 416 182.

La Vila delights fans On a beautiful hot and sunny Sunday afternoon and in front of a good size home crowd La Vila beat St.Cugat of Barcelona 45-26. by Tony Fox This win plus their bonus point takes them 6 points clear of their nearest rivals Les Abelles of Valencia. The score might suggest an easy victory but La Vila did not have it all their own way. St. Cugat exposed some weak defence on the left flank of the home side in the second half when scoring two easy tries. La Vila’s tries came from Paco Martinez, Rodrigo Lacoste (pictured), Juan Ignacio Vinaches, Gonzalo Perez, Federico Pajaujis, and Matias Jara; the latter converting all but one of the tries. The season so far has seen great aggression and tactical manoeuvres from La Vila and their ball handling has been spectacular. However, they cannot afford to take the rest of the season for granted as coach Hernan Quirelli will impress on his players. The next game for La Vila is against BUC Barcelona, the weekend of 26th and 27th November.

Legal disputes and problems with co-ownership of a Spanish property Dear Lawyer, I have been served in UK with a claim coming from a Spanish Court, where the co-owner (50/50) of my Spanish House is claiming against me, trying to force the sale of the property we jointly own in Spain. I was not aware about his intentions, what I should do? Dear reader, Thank you for your enquiry. First of all, we must confirm you that without seeing the claim and documents served to you, we cannot give you any legal advice. In any case, for your information, we can confirm generally that: .- Probably an Ordinary Court Case has been filed against you, so as per the Spanish Civil Jurisdiction Law (LEC), you have 20 working days to answer to the claim. .-Probably the legal action started against you, it is what we called: action for the division of the common ownership or property. Legally as per the Article 400 of the Spanish Civil Code, no co-owner can be forced to remain in co-ownership, therefore, any owner of a property can claim for the co-ownership to be finished. If the property can be divided, in your case into two parts, each party should get its part of the property. Unfortunately, the urban planning does not normally allow the property to be divided 50/50 and create 2 new properties from the existing one. If that is your case, the only solution it is for one of the parties to buy the other out, or the sale of the property normally through the court, and split the proceeds of it. .-Possible answer to the claim: If the property due to the planning, or any other reason cannot be divided; and bearing in mind that the Spanish Civil Code allows the other party to finish the co-ownership at any time. Possibly the best option for you, would be to agree with the claim and finish the court case, and try to come to an agreement or sell
the property. .-Legal Costs: the main risk of these kinds of claims, is the legal costs. Normally the claims are valued according with the value of the property jointly owned, so the legal costs could be really high. In your case, it is essential even if you agree with the claim, to try, as per the Article 395 of the LEC, for the court to rule that you should not pay the legal costs of the claimant, as you were not aware about his intention to stop the co-ownership, and you have not been formally requested about this.
.-Other Costs: If you have paid yourself some of the property costs like local taxes (IBI), garbage collections, you can claim the other party to pay you back 50% of these expenses. It is really important in these kinds of disputes, as soon as the problems start, to send a formal request to the other party and if it is not possible to reach agreement first, to avoid the risk of being asked by the court to pay the legal fees of the claimant. If you have any problem with the other owners of your property, contact us and we will help.

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// You are stubborn and self willed and won’t listen to reason right now. As Jupiter squares on Pluto this is hardly surprising since you are focussing on priorities and not looking at the wider issues that are coming to bite you on the behind! Time will tell and it will heal but take things more in your stride and you are bound to feel better in the long run. The midweek sextile between Venus and Neptune is a boost to the creative and imaginative senses you thrive on. With Venus exalted and Neptune ruling there is much backing to your aesthetic energies and optimum performance; so much so that you can easily make up for lost time, leaving all that you do to the forces of the imagination. Since Saturn rules both time and space and Venus gives both form and structure; their midweek Conjunction brings harmony and peace to the simple pleasures of life! There is a highly positive sense of justice and fair play balanced because Venus rules Libra and Saturn is exalted and the combination provides you with a nifty insight. The waning, gibbous Moon sheds some light on a minor problem and brings things into the light as truths are told. You are not one to say that you knew all along, but your strongly charged psychic senses are mirroring distinct possibilities and this heralds an intuition that will prove to bring things around to your way of thinking at long last. The essence of who you really are comes out loud and proud in the entry of the Sun into Sagittarius. It’s all about looking within, and your journey of innermost exploration can be whatever you make it. Sagittarius is a mutable fire sign and your direction now gravitates towards truth and expansion. Now is a good time to make that decision! Mercury sextiles with Jupiter and opens your intellectual energies with a view to expand your situation; cramming your ever curious mind with knowledge and reveal. This week is one in which you get the time to listen to the inner voice within you and to make advancements with a view to changes based on the rational and the sensible!
They saw that when one door closes another will open somewhere and this week you have to look very closely for the silver lining. As Jupiter squares on Pluto at the end of a busy week the release is showing and highlighting your slightly rebellious streak, and all that this implies. You may see things differently but this is a call you have to answer. The damage has already been done, but you can make amends if that is within your heart right now. You are often very quick to respond, without taking into consideration the true feelings of others. However, without a doubt, you have acted on impulse, and though it may take time, others will finally come around to your way of thinking The Sun enters, bringing wisdom, reveal and a need to get your house in order, and all that this implies. Use the prolonged energies abounding right now to stop the waiting game; since you know very well that time is of the essence, and that significant time has already been wasted. Keep something special under wraps, until the time is right! The Mercury conjunction with your planetary leader Neptune bodes vigilance over a financial matter and just asks that you are careful with how you splash the cash right now. Though it may be time to tighten the belt anyway. there are some unexpected expenses on the horizon too; and these could very well be the tipping point in your budgeting. Letting go means just what is says, as an affair of the heart has reached a difficult stage and you are currently very unsure. You are strongly guided by your innermost instincts; but do take time to see things from a different angle as they are not as bad as they seem. Venus sextiles Neptune bringing you time to get your act together! Somebody has pointed the finger of blame and though you are involved you are not responsible for what happened. In hindsight you would never have got involved but then you had high hopes and these were recently dashed; and somebody moved the goalposts. Walking away right now is nothing more than moving on to where you have to be!

Kenny I seem to be getting dreams that repeat and I am waking up feeling distressed and agitated. Someone chases me and though they never catch me I am running for my life. What can I do to stop this? Paula Mc.E. Paula, re occurring dreams can be very scary. Often if they do not repeat entirely, fragments of the dream will loom into a future dream and this always does cause distress. It will take time for you to get the control but in principle you have to work around making a change to the dream, and taking it positively with you when you go to sleep. The concept is as soon as the repeat starts you simply turn the other way leaving it behind you. This will take time to implement, but with good intention and freedom of fear the dream chase will not bother you again, as you will be going off in the opposite direction!
If It’s Your Birthday This Week Recent Cosmic actions of Love and Light are not enough to face the future; you need to do this with back up and in the sheer knowledge that what comes around goes around, and that those who don’t support you don’t really matter!

Windows 8.1 Hello Aunty I have a Fijitsu laptop with Windows 8.1. It appears to have 2 separate hard drives and after installing some software on the normal hard drive I noticed a lot of strange additions on the Drivers ‘D’ hard drive. Don’t know from where or how they appeared there and I am wondering if I can just delete them or are they operating system files and need to be sent to an appropriate place! I would very much appreciate your expert guidance rather than cause a total disaster! James Reply: Those file look to be some form of windows update files. Perhaps someone clicked on “save” rather than “run” and so the PC saved the files to the last known “save” folder...? I would think that they can be safely deleted, as that update should have installed. Response. Many thanks for your reply and you are correct that they would appear to have been from a windows update as I also have another HP pc with Windows 10 (upgraded from 8.1) and found the same files also appeared on it!
My Documents Dear Aunty, In my PC, in ‘my documents’ I have 8 folders containing various email lists. How can I get my PC to amalgamate these into one folder? Thank you, Alexander. Reply: Thanks for the question, however, before I can even start a reply to help you i need a lot more information.... I need to know a bit more about these “email lists”. Are these text / spreadsheet / html files with lists of people emails? If not one of these then what are they? What email program do you use, or think these lists come from? Normally I would say that if these “lists” are a simple text file, then open one, then copy and paste the information from the other 7 lists into the first one, when save the first one, and delete the other 7. But that will only work if their format is the same (ie they contain the same format and “columns”

Ebenezer and Emily by Jack Troughton SCROOGE sacrificed his love for fiancée Emily for the allure of money – but can he repent and mend his ways in time for Christmas? Studio32 is bringing the Charles Dickens’ winter tale ‘A Christmas Carol’ to the Cardenal Belluga Theatre in San Fulgencio at the end of the month and the company is now in the final stages of rehearsal of the Broadway musical version of the classic. And two of the roles are played by newcomers to Studio32; young Ebenezer Scrooge and his lost love Emily are played by Luke Ringrose and Emily Bentley (pictured). Luke recently moved to Spain and was keen to put his musical theatre talent to good use and was quickly snapped up by Studio32; Emily has been here longer and is an accomplished dancer – now she is stretching herself further by both acting and singing. A Christmas Carol is set on Christmas Eve, when everyone – except Ebenezer Scrooge – is preparing to make merry and celebrate Christmas. Scrooge is visited by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future. Each in turn takes Scrooge through a part of his life that has been or is yet to be, in order to encourage him to mend his miserly ways. This musical version of the story features a fabulous mix of song and dance, and brings to fruition Studio32’s aim to focus entirely on full-scale musical theatre. Show dates are Wednesday 30th November 30th to Saturday 3rd December. All performances start at 7.30pm with doors open from 7pm. Tickets are on sale priced at 9€ and can be booked by
calling 642 080 258 tickets@studiothirtytwo.org. Studio32 will again be supporting the Alzheimer’s Association.

Ray and Dave have ironed out all The Kinks! The Kinks, from Muswell Hill, London, were formed by brothers Ray and Dave Davies in 1963, and are regarded as one of the most important and influential rock bands of the 60´s era. Frontman, Ray 72, and brother Dave, 69, have had a pretty ‘toxic’ past, including Ray stamping on Dave´s 50th birthday cake, but it seems they’ve rekindled their bond after 20 rocky years, as a reunion is afoot. Ray told The Sun “Dave and I will definitely work together again, and we want to play live … maybe we could play Glastonbury in the ‘Legends’ slot,” good call Ray, but you´ll have some competition from Phil Collins and Cliff Richard! The brothers sparked re-union talk a year ago when Ray joined Dave on-stage at Islington Assembly Hall, and with stage musical ´Sunny Afternoon´ featuring Kinks songs packing them in, and a movie biopic ´You Really Got Me´ coming out next year, the time is right for them to get back together. HURRAH!

A film called ´A Street Cat Named Bob´ recently went on release, and it tells the true story of James, a homeless man who was a busker in London’s Covent Garden and Piccadilly Circus. The story shows him struggling to turn his life around until he discovers a ginger cat sitting outside his door. The cat was there day after day and soon their lives become entwined. James’ story was turned into a novel and has sold more than five million copies worldwide, spending over 76 weeks top of the Sunday Times’ bestseller list! The trailer features Luke Treadaway as busker James after a haunting rendition of Silent Night to the Christmas crowds in Covent Garden, and a fan, played by Ruth Sheen, gifts Bob some tins of tuna and the stripy scarf … Its Tissue Time! The UK´s obsession with dogs has spawned a new BBC show, and they´ve employed Chris Packham as the presenter, whom you may know from Spring-Watch and Autumn-Watch. Packham likened the show to the lost ´The Great British Bake Off´ when he said to Yahoo “It’s a competition show that´ll have a similar style to Bake Off, only with dogs” ... OK … “we have people who bring in their pet dogs, and we set them challenges, then they go away to train their dogs to do certain things as well as train themselves. It won’t just be viewers fawning over a load of fluffballs, it has a bit of science to it as well because some of the challenges are about how someone can train their dog.” Chris also said filming was an ’emotional roller coaster’ suggesting the series is good to go! R-R-R-RUFF!!
Sir David Attenborough is back on the telly and Planet Earth II is the show he has decided to produce. It’s pretty old news now of course, with episodes “Islands” and “Mountains” already passed through, but if the show slipped your ´what to watch´ net, you can see Episode 3 “Jungles” this Sunday at 9.00pm on BBC1, and of course, if you are able, Ep´s 1 and 2 on catch-up TV. Fans couldn’t have been more excited that Sir David was back to dazzle them in the most expensive nature documentary series ever commissioned by the BBC. I watched the first episode and want to say ´do all you can to see it … them all! … You won’t be disappointed! ... An example of the high regard there is for the great man comes from fan Will@Chemist80 who said “We need to clone David Attenborough!”

There will be a few of you out there who are purists when it comes to the classics, great stories we love to get back to every now and then. Re-booting has becoming big business over the last 5 years or so, and sadly tinkering has become an accepted part of the process. Emma Watson, who plays Belle in the re-boot of Beauty and The Beast, told Entertainment Weekly last week, “We created a backstory for her that she invented a kind of washing machine, so that instead of doing laundry, she could sit and use that time to read instead.” No! I´m not making it up! Maybe they could make it that the nasty Beast, played by Dan Stevens from Downton Abbey, gets a good kick in the cojones for being so … well nasty! We’ll find out the horrible truth in March! Beauty and the Beast Official US Teaser Trailer

He can’t be trusted
My husband had an affair. We had awful weeks of arguing, and sorting out of issues, eventually said he was sorry saying he’d made a mistake, and I gave him another chance. However, I found out they are still communicating by email - I broke into his email account. One of the messages said he considered her the love of his life, and was biding his time with me, until he could leave. I think he is getting his finances etc in order before he leaves me, as I have noticed cash being moved about at the Bank. What can I do? I would advise you to see a Solicitor immediately. It is not uncommon for spouses in this situation to be underhand and transfer funds or take property or possessions in readiness for a split. You need to be one jump ahead if you can, and a Solicitor will tell you what you should be doing. Please do not delay in getting advice. Once property / assets are taken, it is very difficult getting it back.

Why can’t I grieve? I lost my husband from cancer several months ago. Since then I find I have been dwelling on his past infidelities - and he once deserted me to live with another woman. This was 30 years ago, and it took years for me to get over it, but I managed to forgive him and we went on to have a fairly happy marriage. Now, I have hateful feelings towards him and the old feelings of jealously and betrayal have come back. I find I am looking through his possessions to try and find more evidence of his cheating. Why is this? It is possible that although you think you had forgiven him, in reality perhaps you did not fully do so. You say your marriage was ‘fairly’ happy, which suggests it was not entirely happy. Feeling hatred now he has gone could be your way of coping with his death. In effect, he has ‘deserted you’ again, and may be you are trying to conjure up feelings of hatred rather than face up to feelings of grief at being widowed.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin

Incomplete passives Last week we started looking at the passive voice, with sentences like “The school was built in 1959” (instead of “Mr. O’Reilly built the school …”) and “I was told …” (instead of “Mrs. So-and-so told me”). If you didn’t manage to read that article and haven’t got a clue what I’m talking about, you’d probably be as well to catch up with it on the RTN website, so that I don’t end up writing the explanation all over again. Assuming you are with me, I will now carry on! This passive construction is extremely common in English. We use it all the time; it’s just that we might not realize it. If you ever say things like: “My car was made in Japan” or “How long has this meat been cooked for?” you are speaking in the passive voice, omitting the sentence subjects (Japanese people; the cook). This direct passive voice, which inverts the order of a sentence, exists in Spanish, and we will be looking at it very soon, you’ll be delighted to know. However, it is important to point out first that the Spanish actually have two different ways of dealing with this same issue of getting rid of the subject of a sentence, which are more frequently used than the classic passive voice that is so common in English. One technique is to use the word “se” in front of the third person of the verb. Typical examples of this are the signs
“se vende” or “se alquila” which you see around. To help us understand “se” in the context it might help you to imagine you are Prince Charles saying “one”. “One sells” “one rents” - not that we could imagine our dear prince engaging in either of those activities, or at least, not sticking a sign up in his bedroom window. More examples are: “¿Cómo se dice?” (“How does one say” or “how is it said”) “Para cortar se usa un cuchillo” (“To cut one uses a knife” – “a knife is used”). This structure is sometimes called the “incomplete passive”. Another method is to use the third person plural of a verb, as though we were implying “they”, but without specifying who “they” are. I came across this when teaching Spanish children. One of them would turn up with a new toy and if I asked where he got it from he would say “me lo regalaron” (they gave it to me). I found this very odd until I realized it was a normal way of speaking. Another classic is “me han robado” (they have robbed me). We don’t know who has robbed us. If we knew that we’d go and get our stuff back. So we use the impersonal form which translates into proper English as “I have been robbed”. Next week, we’ll look at the real thing, how to form the passive voice in Spanish. Dear me, aren’t we sad?

Welsh Woes & Wows by

THE PHONE CALL came just as I was getting drape suited & brothel creeping booted for a Rock ‘n’ Roll Extravagance with an 80’s chart topping star & I was the compère at the Auckland Town Hall. It was a chum who was the manager of the best hotel in town. “G’day Chris, you’d better get over sharpish, your poofy looking mate Mickey Barratt is acting as silly as a yard full of ewes.” Me; “I don’t have a mate called Mickey Barratt, poofy looking or otherwise” “Well you booked him in this morning – I sussed he might like a drink when you said he was Shaky.” Uh-oh! Michael Barratt is the birth name of Shakin’ Stevens & he was due on stage in 3 hours in all his fuchsia flamboyance. When I got to the hotel the hip shaking Welsh Elvis had all the mobility of a discarded ironing board. Let’s be magnanimous & put it down to jet lag (although the flight from his previous nights gig in Wellington to Auckland takes an hour). Gallons of black coffee was consumed, we walked up and down the hotel corridor, we covered more miles than I normally do on holiday, but the show must go on and it did. The not so shaky one was terrific, he had ‘em bopping in the aisles big time. Just call me counsellor Chris. Talking of Welsh wizardry – or Welsh witchery (compelling power exercised by beauty & eloquence). Yes! Dame Shirley Bassey. Now I was not a big fan – I’m sure she is sobbing her heart out in her Monte Carlo mansion at this revelation, but I was a rocker back then ‘Kiss Me, Honey Honey, Kiss Me’ did not ‘Rock Me Daddy- O.’ That all changed when she did a concert in Cardiff that I was involved with. Wales finest could be a tad diva like if the mood took her - making Mariah Carey look like Little Orphan Annie, but not this time on Tiger Bay turf. We went with our family to the show, but my Father in Law Roy wasn’t fussed, “Why can’t we go to the pub & not be poncing around with this lot?” ‘This lot’ were a large number of middle aged matrons with glum husbands & elaborate young men with very clean finger nails. The concert was stunning – the Dame was dynamite -even this haggard old rocker loved it. Not just me - Roy (let’s go to the pub) was up at the front of stage, trying to touch the hem of La Bassey’s robe surrounded by ‘this lot’ with their huge bunches of gladiola. Paella arancini bites These crispy paella bites make the perfect canapé for a Spanish-style party. We predict they’re the new deep-fried mac ‘n’ cheese, watch this space... Ingredients 500g cold leftover paella or shop-bought 50g plain flour 2 eggs, beaten 75g dried breadcrumbs 1 tsp smoked paprika vegetable oil or sunflower oil, for deep frying 12 thin slices chorizo 12 green Spanish olives
with the paprika and roll the balls in the crumbs, until well coated. Chill until you’re ready to fry and serve, or for at least 30 mins to allow the rice balls to firm up.
Method 1. With wet hands divide and shape the paella into 12 balls. If the paella is too loose, mix in a few tbsp breadcrumbs until it’s thick enough to roll.
3. Fill a deep saucepan 3/4 full with oil. Bring up to 180C, or hot enough to brown a chunk of bread in 40 secs. Use a slotted spoon to carefully lower the arancini into the hot oil and cook for 3-4 mins until golden brown, then drain on kitchen paper. Don’t overcrowd the pan or the temperature of the oil will drop.
2. Roll each ball in flour, dust off the excess, then dip in egg. Mix the breadcrumbs
4. To serve, skewer each arancini with a folded slice of chorizo and an olive.

life&leisure #health ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Obesity and bad lifestyle habits, the most common causes of diabetes Quironsalud hospital Torrevieja offer free blood sugar tests. Torrevieja, 10th November 2016. Obesity, physical inactivity and poor nutrition increase the number of diabetics every year. We are not aware of the fatal consequences of this chronic disease. Diabetes is a condition that is triggered when the body does not produce enough insulin or does not use it effectively. There are several types: Type 1 diabetes is the most common childhood illness. The pancreas does not produce insulin, so an excess of blood sugar is created, which is why it necessary to provide the body with injected insulin. According to Oscar Boullosa, coordinator of the Diabetes Unit of the Quirónsalud Hospital Torrevieja, “type 2 is the most common, 90% of the patients suffer with this type of diabetes, who are generally over 40 years of age, and the body does not produce enough insulin to absorb the glucose or the cells are resistant to it. These individuals require a balanced diet and exercise”. This multidisciplinary unit monitors all reviews of diabetic patients annually ensuring disease control. There is also gestational diabetes, a disease that forces a strict diet and, in some cases, medication. Usually this diabetes disappears after childbirth, although the affected women
and their children are usually more likely to develop the disease. In Spain, about 26,000 children under the age of 15 suffer from type 1 diabetes, 13% of all diabetics. Type 2 is estimated to have more than 5,500,000 people, of whom 43% are undiagnosed, that is, they do not know they have the disease. Figures that are increasing and indicate that in 20 years numbers could be increased by up to 55%. New life habits, sedentary lifestyle and poor diet are becoming the worst enemies of this chronic disease. These customs oblige, due to lack of time, to have a diet based on fast food and in many cases abandon a diet rich in vegetables, meat of good quality, fish, etc. Experts call for the prevention campaigns needed to alleviate the increase in type 2 cases. Campaigns that promote a healthy lifestyle and will not only reduce the number of diabetics, but also many other pathologies associated with poor eating habits. The possible cure for diabetes One in six adults are obese and one in four children is overweight, an excellent breeding ground for the disease. Diabetes can be cured and the data is clear: more than 70% of obese patients undergoing bariatric or metabolic surgery cease to be diabetic. “The effectiveness is immediate in patients with type 2 diabetes, who usually stop using insulin and medication in the weeks following the intervention,” explains Dr. Juan Luján, head of service and head of the Unit for Obesity and General Surgery and Digestive System at Quirónsalud Hospital Murcia.
There are many cases of patients who have resorted to metabolic surgery, which acts on the area of the digestive tract where all the hormones that induce the metabolism of insulin are involved. This intervention is especially successful in patients with a BMI greater than 35 with type 2 diabetes. Prevention campaigns To Mark World Diabetes Day Quironsalud hospital Torrevieja will offer Free blood sugar level tests and body mass index (BMI) next Monday, November 14th. The tests will be in the following locations: Monday 14th Quirónsalud Hospital Torrevieja will carry out free tests to measure blood sugar levels and BMI Body mass index together with the Association of diabetes in front of the casino Torrevieja where the hospital will also have an informative table with information on prevention from 10am to 2pm. At 12 o’clock balloons will be released. Monday 14th Quirónsalud hospital Torrevieja will carry out free tests to measure blood sugar levels and BMI Body mass index from 10am a 12pm in the medical centres Quirónsalud Santa Pola y Orihuela. Tuesday 15th likewise, there will be free tests at the Quirónsalud Medical Clinic located at the Marjal Resort (Crevillente) from 9am to 12pm. Thursday 17th. New smile in a day: veneers solution Dental veneers are ultra-thin, translucent pieces of composite resin material or porcelain (ceramic) shells, which are affixed permanently to the front of the teeth in order to create instant perfection. Typically, veneers are placed on the front of the teeth to brighten the teeth, mask discolorations, whiten teeth, and improve smiles. Modern technology has made dental veneers more lifelike, convenient, stronger, and to reflect light in a similar fashion as the natural dental enamel. What Materials Are Dental Veneers Made Of? There are two predominant materials used for making dental veneers: composite resin and porcelain. Porcelain veneers and composite veneers are an inexpensive and minimally invasive way of restoring and correcting small cracks, chips and teeth discolouration. How Do Veneers Work? Dental veneers are very thin and fixed in place by a special strong bond that requires very minimal preparation of the teeth. Additionally, they make the teeth to appear natural and healthy. Veneers help to enhance the shape, colour and position of the teeth. When a single tooth is out of position, the veneer can often be fitted to bring the tooth into line with the rest. Advantages of Dental Veneers over Other Procedures 1. Stain resistance and durability. 2. Veneers provide amazing strength and natural appearance 3. The veneers enhance confidence, self-assurance and happiness more than the alternative treatments. 4. Not require extensive shaping procedures.
5. Veneers are very versatile and can be used to cover a range of imperfections such as discolouration, chipped teeth or gaps. “The dental care at Sdent is wonderful, not only do I feel like my teeth are in good hands I also feel like I can trust the people who work there, if you need dental care these are the people to see.” Mr. Collins “I would recommend anyone to be a patient at Sdent! we have made several trips to this office and each visit we have been treated with the most uprespect anyone can show us!!” Mrs. Scott “All the staff including Summer has been great to me and my family! i want to thank Sdent Dental Clinic for all the good work they have done with us.” Davis´s family SDENT DENTAL CLINIC 965 724 502 608 371 132 Avda. After the match members and guests sat down to a sumptuous meal in the Clubhouse and members meals were subsidised by the society. Before the meal one of the members Steve Sayers who served in the army for many years and wore his many medals for various tours of duty gave a reading and 2 minutes silence was held in remembrance of those soldiers who had lost their lives whilst serving their country. There were also games such as guess the weight of the cake, find the treasure and guess who the babies were to help raise more funds for the appeal. Honda CR-V FUN AND POWER: Words that, for me, best describe the Honda CR-V. Fun because this all-wheel drive vehicle can tackle most terrains while the 150bhp 2.2 litre diesel unit has enough oomph to travel from 0 to 60mph in a little over 10 seconds. I’m testing the top-of-the-range £33,000 plus 2.2-litre four wheel drive version. As I look down the side panels I’m instantly struck by how this fourth generation model reminds me of the BMW X5. It looks grander, more striking and capable than its predecessors. I like the polished metal finish. Eldest daughter Harriett likes the way water jets clean the headlights at the push of a button. In fact this sports utility vehicle (SUV) is fitted with a number of luxury features including the power tailgate that makes light work of closing the boot, extremely easy to fold rear seats and a panoramic glass roof, all of which you can see in the video at testdrives.biz. My test takes place in Dorset, Hampshire and Oxford as we decide to visit some artists who have opened their studios there. Interestingly the route is pretty much a straight run from Oxford down to Dorset and we are able to rack up just over 500 miles returning at best 39.7mpg at a constant 56mph. As temperatures drop to minus figures in the winter months it is reassuring to be driving a vehicle that is fitted with permanent four wheel drive, especially when visiting remote parts of the country. In fact on a number of occasions we find ourselves
parking in farmers’ fields and the CR-V makes extremely light work of such requests. Hill descent is a useful feature too enhancing its capabilities when tackling such scenarios. The black leather interior is comfortable and the power front seats are easy to operate, although the driver’s seat does seem to remember a different position on locking the vehicle. This is no doubt down to me not setting my desired position on the memory function. Similarly my wife and I find the radio frustrating because it refuses to play our favourite station, bypassing it at every request. The automatic gearbox is smooth. The centre armrests front and back together with the blacked out rear windows add to the hint of luxury. Parkers, the car experts, say: “The British-built Honda CR-V is now in its fourth generation. The five-seat SUV has been in production since 1995 and has proven incredibly popular for the Japanese manufacturer. Indeed, five million CR-Vs have gone to happy homes around the world. Its blend of practicality, reliability and efficiency has stood it in good stead, but competition from the likes of Mazda’s CX-5, Nissan’s X-Trail and even BMW’s X3 means Honda really has to be on its toes to retain its share of the market.”
FACTS AT A GLANCE New price range: 26,451€ to 43,160€, 0-60mph: 10.6secs, Top speed: 118mph, Economy: 39mpg Power: 150bhp Accessories for the CR-V including roof boxes and roof racks are available from: www.roofcarriers.co.uk Watch the video at: www.testdrives.biz

Green Lines to Reduce Speed Serving as a trial before potentially being implemented across the country, Castilla y LeĂłn will be one of the first places in Spain to adopt a number of new systems aimed at reducing road traffic incidents.
One of the first tests to be carried out will be on the CL-615 and CL-613, where green lines are being painted along the edge of the road. Having already been tested in parts of Sweden and the Netherlands, it has been proven that by using different colours on the road gives drivers a different special impression of the road and, in particular, induces drivers to moderate their speed accordingly, slowing down as the road appears to narrow. The CL-615 is a 92 kilometre stretch of conventional road linking Palencia with Guardo, which is considered to be an area of high risk. Since 2011 to today, 14 people have lost their lives on the stretch of road, another 33 were seriously injured and 139 more people hospitalised due to road traffic incidents. The road has a hazard index rating of 12.37. The CL-613 runs from Palencia to SahagĂşn and is a single carriageway road with traffic flowing in both directions, with long straight sections and numerous curves. This 58 kilometre stretch of road has seen 2 people killed, 30 seriously injured and 55 other people hospitalised since 2011. The hazard index rating for this road is 30.13. Although it is believed that no explanation is necessary, the roads will also have informative signs indicating that the roads are of a special format, and that they may be subject to intensified speed checks and controls. In fact, the Guardia Civil will indeed focus more attention on these areas, not necessarily to try to catch more speeders, but to assess whether the markings do have an impact on reducing the speed of vehicles.
