DETAILED RESEARCH reduces the risk of an expensive mistake when moving to the sun and the potential heartache of getting things wrong, advised ‘local ambassador’ Ian Sadler. BUYING PROPERTY in Spain can have its well-publicised pitfalls, but spending time investigating the market, the system, and locations is a sound investment, he said. Ian is the fi rst of a selected team recruited by the British Consulate in Alicante to its new ‘Our Local Ambassador’ project to be featured in RTN

A word from JT BREXIT LOOMS and an estimated two million British people living in Europe will not have the chance to cast a vote come the 23rd June ballot. The last ditch court action to overturn the EU Referendum Act – which determined who has a voice and those that do not – was lost this week but not before reaching the Supreme Court. So much for promises and the dangled carrot called the ‘Vote for Life’ legislation promised by the Government in its manifesto before last year’s General Election. Offi cial word has it Parliament was too busy…that’s the debating chamber rather than its subsidised bars and restaurants. The phones continue to ring at RTN Towers as readers wish to express their dismay at being barred from the ballot box. Interestingly, they represent both the ‘leave’ and ‘remain’ camps and often speak a great deal more common sense than the sound bites from the Cameron Kidz and the Boris and His Boys on the TV. This week marks the start proper of the paper’s partnership with the British Consulate in Alicante and its ‘Our Local Ambassador’ project. Again, this is all about common sense; and sharing experiences to help others. Practical help combined with offi cial advice could be a winning formula to help as many people as possible - expats and those looking to move to Spain - stay on the true path.

The Night Stalker A KILLER on the loose in Almeria and blamed for wreaking havoc amongst the chicken population is believed to be a genet; a cat-like hunter. by Lenox Napier Talk in the feed shops of Mojacar has turned to the ‘jineta’, a night predator that breaks into bird pens and creates “carnage”. The genet is blamed by farmers...although no one has yet spotted the rather beautiful hunter. RTN was taken to inspect the damage by Aziz - a Moroccan graduate in international law, now working in Spain tossing hay and feeding the chickens. “There’s where he got in,” said Aziz pointing to a modest looking tear in the bottom of the fence. “He killed sixteen pullets. He bites off their heads and sucks the blood.” Back in the feed store, an old man was buying some pellets. “They only do what they are meant to do, it’s not their fault,” he said. Tracks left by the monster are heavier and larger than a domestic cat. Local birds surviving the beast - a mixture of ducks, chickens and peacocks – have been locked away for their own safety. Appeals for advice on social media have met a mixed response. “Don’t kill it,” said the British. “Kill it,” said farmers. It is a rare species said the ecologists. They were brought here by the Moors, added a historian. An old news-story found on Google told of the successful and humane trapping of a genet which had killed large numbers of poultry in Asturias. The unrepentant animal was taken off in a cage to somewhere quiet in the countryside, was freed, and went native.

Vote battle lost THE FIGHT to win all British citizens a vote in next month’s EU Referendum was lost this week in the Supreme Court - leaving 2 million expats who have lived in other European countries for over 15 years without a voice. by Jack Troughton The battle went to the highest court in the country on Tuesday from the Court of Appeal in London, in a bid to overturn the rule that disqualifies people from casting a vote after that time. The Government promised a ‘vote for life’ for British people as a manifesto pledge. However, the legislation has still to go before Parliament a year after the General election. Law firm Leigh Day took up the matter on behalf of war veteran Harry Shindler MBE, a 94-year-old living in Italy and lawyer and Belgium resident Jacquelyn MacLennan; but in reality for all expats barred from voting under the franchise of the EU Referendum Act 2015. It was claimed they were punished for exercising their right of free movement and that common law gave protection to the right to vote as British citizens and full members of the United Kingdom. The matter was heard by five Supreme Court Judges Lady Hale, Lord Mance, Lord Reed, Lord Sumption and Lord Hughes – who unanimously rejected the legal challenge. JUDGEMENT Passing judgement, Lady Hale said: “We have decided that it is not arguable that there is an interference with the right to free movement. “We do have considerable

sympathy for the situation in which the appellants find themselves. We understand that this is something that concerns them deeply, but we cannot discern a legal basis for challenging this statute (the 2015 Act). David Standard, spokesman for Leigh Day, said: “So this is the end of the legal battle, we took it to the highest court in the country but, unfortunately, we were unable to persuade the Supreme Court justices of what we still believe is a deeply unfair and unlawful decision by the Government to prevent British citizens, who are acutely affected by the EU Referendum, to vote

in it. “We would like to say how much stronger our case was with such fantastic appellants and with the support of so many of you. Many thanks for all the good wishes, ideas and passion as we battled through the courts.” Campaigner Harry Shindler has lobbied Parliament and the EU over the matter. He has the last word. “I have a hope, I always have a hope, that at this late hour the government will act on the basis that the need for the UK to remain in Europe is more important than trying to pacify the OUT members of the government.”

Kite surfer speared by fish

A kite surfer got more than he bargained for this week when he came across a garfish in the waters near Torrevieja. Marcos Gomez Mora was in the Cabo Roig, Orihuela Costa area when the garfish speared his ankle with its razor jaw. Friends helped him to the shore whilst others called the emergency services. He was taken to the hospital where an x-ray revealed surgery was required as the bone had crumbled inside the wound. It appears the fish jumped out of the water at the exact same time as Marcos was surfing past, a freak moment of timing.

“ALTHOUGH WE did an awful lot of investigation, which did help, we still did not understand everything and know exactly what was going on,” he said. “We did a lot of homework but have still learnt an awful lot since. “Research helps manage the risk factors – rather than just coming here, wasting money and becoming very unhappy.”

is the one purchase people do most consciously,” he said. “We took pieces of paper into diff erent rooms, then got back together and began to negotiate.” Their attention focussed on the Marina Alta. “We knew people in Alcalali who were unhappy because they bought the fi rst place they saw; they got caught up in the rush of things.

SUNSHINE He added: “There are a lot of people who think it is Shropshire with sunshine here; they expect it to work the same way as the UK but they soon become frustrated and angry.” They were able to take early retirement; Ian had his own company and they sold a UK property when the market was at its peak. “We thought about the dream, and it became reality.” France was ruled out – French was Ian’s second language although Spanish has replaced this – and both individually drew up lists about what a new home must have, what it would be nice to own, and what it should not have. “It is a process I like to use in decision making in general. It was setting down the criteria for buying. I think buying property

CRITERIA “We actually put everything into a spread sheet and sent the criteria to estate agents. It was a move that worked for us.” And they also advised visiting before buying, renting a home at diff erent times of the year in areas people were interested in living in – whether inland or on the coast. Ian stressed it was also important for people to get “a little bit of Spanish under their belts” before making the move and having a basic structure to hang new words on. “It’s really worth it.” He added: “I fi nd the Spanish a delightful to be with and pleased if you can speak the language. They are quite happy to help you out, because they are sometimes in the same situation and fi nd the British speak far too quickly.” And he said the ability to speak some Spanish did not just help people integrate, it enabled them to deal with problems better as they arose. “When you try and solve a problem yourself, you are learning more about how society here works and how its culture works and thinks.”

Huge boost to employment in Almería

THOUSANDS OF jobs will be created following the approval of a new freight terminal in Nijar, Almería. by Angela Baker The Andalusian regional governing council approved the project on Tuesday 24th May. It will create 3,400 jobs in the first phase alone. The new freight complex will link to the Mediterranean corridor and is a joint project between the public and private sector costing an estimated 37 million euros, with the private company involved, OHL, contributing 4 million euros to the total cost. Plans include a rail freight terminal; road connections to the A-7 motorway and specialised facilities and services for users. Within the announcement, and in accordance with the regional legislation, 15% of the 174 hectares will be allocated for public space and 10% for green areas. The logistics area will triangulate around the A-7 enabling easy access to the airport and ports of Almería. Andalusia currently has intermodal logistics areas in full operation at the Bay of Algeciras, Cordoba, Malaga and Seville where approximately 200 companies employ 2,800 workers. Other similar projects are in the planning stages as to date the regional investment in such infrastructure has been 200 million euros.

Youngsters arrested THREE JUVENILES have been arrested and three others identified as suspects behind a series of nine robberies from children.

National Police in Almería believe they are responsible for nine robberies committed with violence and intimidation. The investigations began in early January, when officers were informed that a child had been the victim of an assault by a group of youngsters.

And detectives were to discover eight more similar offences. In all cases the methods used matched: a group of boys surrounded a victim, sometimes using a knife, and after threatening and intimidating the victim, stole their mobile phone. The crimes occurred around the same time of day and within the same few streets in the centre of Almería.

Victims of circumstance by Lenox Napier HELEN AND Len Prior invested time and money on their Spanish home before it was demolished in a blaze of publicity – relegating them to living in the garage. The couple believes the Almeria home was randomly selected by the Junta de Andalucia in a political move; and at a massive cost to the local economy. The licence to build was revoked, the Vera home became ‘illegal’ and the bulldozers arrived in January 2008 under the orders of the Junta. Helen said: “We were three years in the house before we knew anything. We loved to garden and to enjoy our retirement, as anyone else should be able to do. “The mayor knew about the problem for two years before we were told anything. So we spent lavishly on our house and the pool and the garden. The demolition was definitely political.” At the time, the Junta had approved plans to create a railway station and build ‘Llano Central’, a pre-crisis artificial city, nearby. “Imagine demolishing one house and building 15,000 houses half a kilometre away,” said Helen. “The PSOE in Seville wanted to make the Mayor, Felix Lopez, who was with the Partido Andalucista, to look silly.”

Hospital fire A HOSPITAL fire in Jerez de la Frontera meant that 200 patients had to be evacuated early on Tuesday morning. The fire, which is believed to have started in the basement area of the southern Andalusian hospital, damaged the outpatient surgery department, radiology, kitchens and also some of the wards. It was reported that all but 39 of the evacuated patients were able to return to the wards soon after firefighters dealt with the emergency. However, two security guards required treatment for smoke inhalation having assisted people in the evacuation.

RAT The Priors live in the garage on the 10,600 square metre land and built a bathroom when a rat was found in the shed they had used as the shower and lavatory. “We have a kitchen and we have a wooden extension which can be dismantled. Len is a handyman otherwise we wouldn’t have been able to do all this – I’m sure the junta wouldn’t dare knock it down,” added Helen. “We have farm water and bottled water; we use a generator and some solar energy. We ‘make do and mend’ like a sign says on the wall in the kitchen.” There are some 300,000 illegal homes in Andalucia and the story of the Priors and the uncertainty over property has had a massive impact in Almeria. Helen said: “Somebody gave us an estimate of the loss in Almeria in sales and income and jobs – he suggested 5,000 million Euros since our house was demolished and the story went out around the world.” Northern Europeans still dream of moving to the sun and to live in beautiful countryside like Almeria. The Priors have a couple of words of advice: “Don’t buy in Spain. Rent.”

Fake 50 euro notes

The Guardia Civil in Garrucha, Almería, has arrested three people in connection with distributing counterfeit 50€ notes in the area. The forgeries were first noticed by a worker in a bar in Playa de Vera who was handed a 50€ bill from a cus-

tomer paying for some drinks. He informed the authorities who arrived at the premises, identified the money as counterfeit and started inquiries. Evidence from other establishments surfaced which matched the same description of the men previously given to

officers. Eventually the identity of one man was confirmed and he was detained which then led to his two accomplices being caught. JGR, 53,a resident of Puerto Lumbreras, JCS, 41, and FD , 37, both residing in Lorca, were all found to be in possession of varying amounts of counterfeit 50€ notes totaling 1000€.

Copper wire gang caught by CAROLINE TYSZKA GUARDIA CIVIL offi cers have ar rested 57 people for stealing copper wiring after an estimated 15 tons of the metal was taken from wind plants, train installations, telephone networks and power lines. Operation NAIDAR, based in Albacete, linked 205 crimes to organised groups operating in 19 areas including: Albacete, Cuenca, Toledo, Ciudad Real, Madrid, Murcia, Alicante, Cáceres, Burgos, Zamora, Granada, Jaén and Cordoba. The suspects´ criminal activities also included being in possession of illegal weapons, assault and public disorder offences - with officers searching 45 properties and seizing various electronic devices, shotguns

and documents linking them to the crimes. A break through in the investigation came when officers in Albacete discovered information relating to a group in Madrid. This resulted in the arrest of 53 Romanians and 4 Spanish nationals aged between 15 and 55-years-old. The gang was divided into several groups; they would then commit the thefts in diff erent regions on the same day, making it hard for the investigating team to link them to the same organisation. It was discovered over the past fi ve months the gang had sold over 93,000 kilograms of copper amounting to 350,834€. Of the 57 arrested, 26 were remanded in custody and one minor was sent to a juvenile facility.

Strikers wreak travel havoc by Caroline Tyszka FRENCH STRIKERS are continuing to ensure a nationwide transport meltdown as more workers joined the national protest over labour reforms - and air traffic control workers announced further strike dates for next week. Train drivers again joined the protesters who have started blockading the countries oil refineries last week on what they are calling “rolling strikes.” The CGT (General Confederation of Work Union) called for all workers in France to stand up and be heard - resulting in almost all of the country struggling to buy fuel at local petrol stations earlier in the

week. As lorry drivers carrying vital goods through France were faced empty tanks, some motorists were travelling across the border to Belgium to fill up. The protests come just days before the British half-term holidays, when thousands of motorists are expected to cross into France, and it is only three weeks before the Euro 2016 football tournament. With nuclear power station workers also downing tools yesterday (Thursday) and dock workers agreeing to join in the protests; the final blow for free movement across Europe came with the announcement of an air traffic control strike next week, June 2nd to June 5th. François Hollande, the French president,

Brexit: price hikes

and his prime minister warned they would not let a “minority” of unions take the country “hostage.”

Prime Minister David Cameron warned this week leaving the EU would make family holidays more expensive. He said: “If we were to leave, and the pound were to fall, which is what most people expect and what the Treasury are forecasting, that would put up the cost of a typical holiday for a family of four to a European destination by £230.” The Treasury predicts a Brexit would make sterling 12% weaker in two years than remaining a member. It is also possible would lead to a rise in air fares, but that the impact could be reduced depending on what agreements the UK reached with the EU and other member countries.

Weevil drones grounded DRONES USED in the fight against the notorious palm weevil, which attack and kill palm trees, has been grounded in Elche. The innovative breakthrough, created by company Glen Biotech , uses drones to apply an chemical directly on to the affected palms. However, for the moment, the small craft cannot be used in Elche, as drone use is not permitted close to the airport. Manager of Glen Biotech, Berenice Guerri, described the drone as being specifically created to be able to carry and deposit 1.5k of the agent onto trees. He added: “Elche is in the protection zone of the airport but we think that European legislation will remove this ban, which could happen later this year, so Elche could benefit from our technique.”

Alicante hospital fails to deliver by Caroline Tyszka THE ALICANTE General Hospital is still to open its new children’s operating theatre despite hundreds of youngsters waiting for surgery. The new unit has remained closed since its completion in February and it has meant that only those procedures which do not require hospitalisation can be carried out. And according to a medical union, 550 children are on the waiting list for surgery, despite the hospital announcing the new facilities would help the younger community receive treatment in a more appropriate environment. The hospital says staffing issues combined with a lack of equipment had resulted in the delay, but added it was in the process of purchasing the necessary items with a reviewed opening date after the summer. Victor Pedrera, the provincial secretary of the Medical Association, criticised the hospital for taking children onto its waiting list despite not being equipped to do so, and insisted the unit was opened as a matter of urgency to avoid lists growing further.

Search for missing Spanish journalist A SPANISH journalist working in Columbia disappeared feared kidnapped - over the weekend. by Caroline Tyszka Salud Hernandez Mora from the El Mundo and El Tiempo newspapers, was last seen on Saturday in north-eastern Colombia, where she was investigating coca crops. As the Columbian forces began an operation to try and locate the missing journalist their foreign ministry announced that they suspected she had been kidnapped by the National Liberation Army (ELN), the second largest guerrilla group in the country. President Santos said: “I have told the security forces, our generals, commanders and the chief of police to deploy all forces necessary to find her and free her if she is being held.” Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo, Spanish Foreign Minister, said that while it was not confirmed she had been kidnapped, “everything suggested” the ELN were behind her disappearance. He continued: “we know from our enquiries that it does appear that she was taken against her will, as a motorcycle taxi driver had taken her to the town of El Tarra and she had asked him to wait for her – she never returned.” Colombia is one of the most dangerous places in the world for journalists, who face intimidation from drug traffickers, guerrillas and paramilitaries.

TV pirates arrested

GUARDIA CIVIL officers have dismantled a network of companies supplying homes with illegal pay to view decoder boxes. Thirty people were arrested for crimes against intellectual property rights after officers swooped on several businesses across Spain selling Movistar+, Orange TV and Vodafone TV paying channels. The boxes used software that allowed false transmitting signals to give users illegal access to paying services such as football and films. It was discovered that one user would register with the network and then “cardshare” to other users with the modified equipment.

MoD told to stop using malaria drug on soldiers THE MINISTRY of Defence in the UK have been told that an anti-malarial drug used for serving soldiers should only be used as a “last resort” due to its severe side effects. by Caroline Tyszka A committee of MPs made the announcement following several cases of military personnel suffering from depression and experiencing suicidal tendencies having been given Lariam, an anti-malaria drug. The British military no longer gives Lariam to pilots or divers, but continues to issue it to soldiers and sailors. The majority of NATO countries have stopped using the drug but the once-aweek pill is issued to around 2,500 UK military personnel each year, not always with the recommended personal assessment. Dr Julian Lewis MP, the committee chairman, said, “It seems quite clear that not only is the MoD unable to follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for prescribing

the drug in all instances, but a number of troops discard their Lariam rather than risk its potentially dangerous side-effects.” “It is our firm conclusion that there is neither the need, nor any justification for continuing to issue this medication to service personnel unless they can be individually assessed, in accordance with the manufacturers’ requirements.” The MoD, meanwhile, has defended using the drug despite the possibility of being sued by military personnel who are now suffering symptoms such as nightmares, hallucinations and depression. In a statement they said: “The vast majority of deployed personnel already receive alternatives to Lariam and, where it is used, we require it to be prescribed after an individual risk assessment. We have a duty to protect our personnel from malaria where in some cases, Lariam will be the most effective way of doing that.”

Taste test ALMERIA IS considered – along with Granada - the best place for tapas in Spain and from today (Friday) there is an opportunity to put the reputation to the test. by Lenox Napier The city of Almeria has organised a ‘route of tapas for solidarity’ running until 17th July to help the local food bank with a donation from participating bars. And 27 of Almeria’s leading tapas bars are joining the event; a council spokesman saying: “I am very excited by this idea as one of the biggest attractions of our land is put at the service of solidarity. “And our cuisine will lead an exciting and original project which, we hope, will attract the support of all our citizens.” Traditionally, buying a beer or wine earns a customer a free tapa; a small – in Almeria, not so small – plate of titbits, to be savoured with the drink and even after a time solving the problem of what to have for dinner.

This is indeed intensive work, which fills Maria Luisa’s day and reaffirms the need for her new role, especially as she has received more than 2,000 calls throughout this first year. For Maria Luisa Pérez, this position is intended, not just to aid specific individuals, but to facilitate a higher level of integration. She said “We hope to provide a familiar person, who is very close by and who makes them feel as much like mojaqueros as anyone else”. Maria Luisa can be contacted by phone via Mojácar Town Hall, 950 615 009

And a workshop was organised with the collaboration of teachers and students from the cookery department at the Alyanub Vera Institute. They prepared several traditional dishes with a twist: including watermelon gazpacho, vegetables and chickpea salad, and candied mackerel among others. It is hoped to increase the consumption of fruits and vegetables among, not only the elderly, but their children and grandchildren, too. The professionals underlined the importance of following a healthy lifestyle that included a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables and pulses, and taking of regular physical exercise , moderate and adapted to individual needs.

Dead whale found on local beach THE BODY of a dead whale was found on the Roquetas de Mar beach earlier this week. by Angela Baker The beaked whale, which was around 5 metres long, was discovered Tuesday morning on the shoreline of the beach near the Hotel Zoraida.

Part of the toothed family of whales the beaked whale is considered to be quite shy and not normally found in the Mediterranean. Feeding only on squid it is not deemed to be dangerous to humans.

IU supports animal rights THE UNITED Left party is calling for all political groups to support a full ban of animals performing in circus shows in Roquetas. The IU reported that the first steps in the admission of this proposal have been negative due to the abstention of voting from the PP, PSOE and the Ciudadanos parties in the last meeting of the Informative Committee for a Healthy City. Spokesman Ricardo Fernandez Alvarez said: “IU Roquetas

Initial inspection of the whale by the Roquetas aquatic division found that there were no boat propeller injuries and the remains were then taken for detailed examinations to determine the cause of death.

wants to propose a modification to the current ordinance which is to prohibit, in all cases, the use of animals in shows. “This only provides for the prohibition if an abuse is caused to an animal: in consultations that we have made with conservation and animal rights groups, that situation occurs in almost all circuses, due to its inherent nature and the conditions in which the animals are in”. He added: “That is why from IU has asked other parties to reconsider their position and help so that Roquetas, too, can join the growing number of municipalities that prohibit the use of animals in shows.”

DNA to identify dog poo THE COUNCIL in El Ejido is considering using DNA testing to identify dog droppings not picked up by their owners in public areas. Francisco Gongora, mayor for the town, announced that the council will be looking into the feasibility of holding DNA information on local dogs and that they were currently in discussion with the College of Veterinarians about the practicalities of such a scheme. Other towns within the region are also considering this option as it becomes increasingly hard to identify who the dog owners are when dog poo is found. The council is also working on a dog park area where owners will be able to take their pets to a specially designed space of approximately 3,000 square metres. This will house activity equipment for the dogs and benches for their owners.

You know it makes sense

by

Jennifer Cunningham

I was saddened but not surprised to read in the local newspapers about a lady from Northern Ireland who fell off an apartment balcony, where she suffered serious injuries and subsequently is in a coma in a Spanish hospital.

Unfortunately, possibly due to her pre-existing serious health problems, a decision was made not to take any travel insurance which, of course, would have excluded pre-existing conditions and possibly making the insurance more expensive. I assume that she was travelling on the EHIC card. Let’s hope so because otherwise the cost of care in a private hospital would be formidable, and I am not sure to what extent she would be covered in a Spanish national health hospital even with the reciprocal agreement between Spain and the UK. The family have launched an appeal to raise funds for her return home and I wish them the best of luck with this. Donations can be made to https;// crowdfunding.justgiving.com/gerard-martin. Over the years I have written many times about the need for travel insurance as you never know what is around the corner and accidents happen frequently, especially when you are in a holiday mode, which tends to relax you more and leave you less aware of potentially dangerous situations. It is extraordinary how we kid ourselves that nothing is going to happen and my answer to that is – Why not? For the sake of a bit of time and money spent, you could be fully covered and protected on your holiday. It is such a risk you are taking when you do not do this. Just ask yourself a simple question

before going on a trip. If anything happens to me, or a member of my family, whilst travelling, will I be able to meet the medical fees, especially if outside of Europe when you don´t even have a health card? Of course the answer is probably going to be no, if you are totally honest with yourself and like this family has discovered, it can cost a horrendous amount of money. My company offers an excellent travel insurance. This also applies, of course, to health insurance. I know there are many people living in Spain who are ineligible for Spanish health care and have no cover at all. Do not assume that the health card will cover you if you live in Spain and for tourists it is only for emergency treatment. I appreciate that people have pre-existing conditions and this does affect the cover when taking out health and travel insurance. That is a reality of life, so better to take out health insurance when you have no health issues or pre-existing conditions and not wait until you do. The risk you are putting on your bank balance, and that of your family, could be very high and the stress associated with this will affect everyone in your family. And stress is a killer on its own. Whilst writing about taking responsibility for your travel and health, it takes me to those dreaded words, funeral plans. I realise us Brits are very bad when it comes to talking or planning our own death and it is pretty awesome. However, if you do not plan and take the time to spend about an hour discussing it with one of my consultants, it is going to be so much worse when the dreaded day comes for your family. Many of us have experienced

death and, consequently, a funeral in Spain and I know how daunting it can be if a funeral plan is not in place. Your bank accounts could be frozen, so you would probably need to use a credit card and it would be for no less than € 4000. Obviously this will increase over the years, making it even more difficult to find the amount required up front and, of course, there are the arrangements, death certificate, registration with the authorities and, if a sudden death, the possibility of the involvement of the Guardia, at a time when you and your family will be extremely stressed. Why put yourself or anybody else through this? Contact us and we will be able to advise you how to make like easier. Call one of our consultants on 96 646 1690 or visit our website www. jennifercunningham.net. You know it makes sense. How refreshing to read a good realistic article on Brexit in one of the local expat papers by John Smith. Combine this article with the statement from Michael O’Leary of Ryanair, who has advised that Brexit would make it impossible to keep low fares within Europe. Obviously the health card would disappear and negotiations would need to take place regarding the reciprocal national healthcare in Spain for retired residents. John Smith also advised about the issue of the UK passports which will all need to be re-issued as they are European Union passports. Can you imagine the cost and time involved in this alone. These are only a few of the issues that are now coming to light which will affect Ex Pats . Be careful, you can never go back, you can only move forward.

Big changes to the Big Players! Property portals make the move to “Realtime” Trends suggest that the Spanish property market is once again set to boom and traditional “high street” agents can often feel threatened by the huge increase of online agents. However, providing that agents have an up-to-date website and property management system, equipped with the relevant tools for integration, agents can thrive and get the benefits from both being on the high street and being digitally savvy online. Portals are a vital tool in the highly competitive property market and are mentioned regularly in the media and the property news outlets. From the ongoing battle between Rightmove, Zoopla and OnTheMarket to the high costs of these portals to the estate agents themselves. According to the online news site ‘This is money’, the average cost per month incurred by each UK estate agents branch is an estimated £637 from Rightmove and £311 from Zoopla. What isn’t reported however, are the benefits to agents of using the “Realtime integration service” provided by some of the portals. A shift away from XML based feeds is actually happening now and will soon be obsolete. The big portals such as Rightmove and Zoopla offer Realtime updates for any changes you make to your properties if your management system / website is compatible. Updating properties in Real-time can ensure your listing achieves the maximum potential of views to help you secure a sale. Another key benefit of Realtime integration is that you can manage one set of property details and take advantage of the other services that portals offer like additional features, property status and video tours to mention just a few. Cen-

tralised management can save you valuable time that will enable you to focus on selling those properties listed on the portals and to maximise your ROI. After all it is an expensive business using the big portals. PropertyNow are an approved Rightmove integration partner and provide a unique system that can be tailored to meet your requirements. We’ve built business tools to automate processes that would normally require hours of work to complete. You’ll be amazed how much time you can save by owning a system that works for you. To find out how PropertyNow can help you maximise your estate agent presence on the web and in turn reduce your work load, contact us now! Wrong-Way Driver A Romanian man drove his vehicle carrying his wife and two children in the opposite direction on the AP-7 motorway last week, reports traffic website N332.es. by James martin The motorist justified his actions by saying that he had no money to pay the toll. The man had driven his vehicle along the AP-7 and arrived at the toll booths at La Zenia. Unable to pay the toll, he decided to turn his vehicle around and drive 8 kilometres in the opposite direction before the Guardia Civil intercepted him in the San Miguel area of the Alicante to Cartagena motorway. The man was tested for alcohol and drugs, both of which were negative, and gave the explanation to the arresting officers. Despite his actions, it is believed that there was no

immediate risk to other road users at the time. There is an established protocol in place for dealing with drivers who have no immediate means of payment. In this circumstance, the toll booth operator would take a copy of the driver´s identity documents and the vehicle´s details and issue a notice to the driver with details of a bank account to pay into within a specified time. Failure to pay would then result in the driver being reported for an offence. Repeat offenders face having their vehicle immobilised until the Guardia Civil arrive to deal with the driver. However, in genuine cases, if payment is made in time, there is not likely to be any future action.

Holidays to Spain in high demand SPAIN AND Portugal have experienced a sudden surge in bookings from British holidaymakers amidst fears of other traditional locations being attacked. The Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) is warning that people leaving it late to book to the two countries may find it more difficult than usual due to “notable increases” in reservations. And advice from the travel agents includes considering the northern coasts of Spain and Portugal as the more popular southern resorts are filling up. Portugal has seen a 29% increase in bookings with Spain slightly behind with a 26% increase. The rise in figures comes following terrorist attacks in countries such as Egypt and Tunisia.

Laughing mum becomes a star STAR WARS fan Candace Payne has become a global star after posting a Facebook Live video of herself wearing an electronic Chewbacca mask and dissolving into fits of laughter.

The mother-of-two’s clip has become the most watched Facebook live clip in history – watched by more than 146,000,000 people around the world after streaming the hilarious video. Insisting the mask was for her as a late birthday present – but promising to allow her kids to play with it – she

Totally overjoyed with her purchase, the film shows her in fits of uncontrollable giggles, snorting and with tears running down her cheeks. Sat behind the steering wheel of her car and safely pulled up in a car park, she opens her mouth to allow the mask to work its magic. “That’s not me making that noise...that’s the mask.” And Candace, from Texas, says: “Oh, I’m such a happy Chewbacca. This is worth every penny. I can’t stop; I kind of want to drive around like this. “Oh my gosh...I’m in tears. This is the best birthday present ever to myself.” She posted the four minute film simply captioned ‘It’s the simple joys in life...” before it quickly went viral – with 50 million views in the first 24 hours alone. Candace later commented that everyone should have such a mask and a mirror, adding: “The most joyful Wookie ever.”

Are you either Self-employed or run a business? HAVE YOU been affected by a mortgage ‘fl oor interest rate’ clause (suelo)? Legally you can also claim. ALTHOUGH NOT as quite as clear cut in legal terms as normal consumer cases; companies, professionals and self-employed can apply for the nullity or non incorporation of floor interest clauses in their mortgage loans, just as “ordinary” consumers are able to. As most will know already, an interest floor or minimum interest clause, is that by which the bank sets a minimum interest rate payable. This means what when the interest reference rate decreases (usually the Euribor), the debtor will never benefit from this drop, they must continue paying at least the minimum percentage set out as the floor rate. While recognizing that businesses or professionals acting in the exercise of their professional activity cannot be considered as consumers, we understand that the legal status of a consumer is irrelevant for this purpose, and therefor they should also be able to request the cancellation of the floor clause, if the bank did not explain to them in a sufficiently clear way the economic and financial consequences of this clause, and negative impact it could have. Such clauses are what is known in Spain as general conditions of business, which are regulated by Law 7/1998. In its Article 2 it states that this law applies when the adherent, (the client) is an individual or legal person ( entity), noting also that the adherent - client for the purposes of this Act, may also be a professional, even if not acting in the course of their business. In addition its Article 7 states that it will remain unincorporated to the contract those general conditions which the adherent has had no real opportunity to know in full at the time of the contract (which is what has happened in the majority of the mortgage floor clause cases). Most of the grounds and legal arguments used by the Supreme Court to declare null and void certain mortgage floor clauses apply to cases where the debtor or borrower is a company or a professional, without it being necessary to have the legal status of a consumer. Indeed, Provincial (or Appeal) Courts, such as Cordoba, Las Palmas, etc have ruled in favour of the possibility of requesting the annulment of the mortgage floor clause by professionals. So, if you are a professional, director of a company, self-employed, etc., and have signed a mortgage with a Spanish bank but are not benefiting from the fall in the Euribor or your interest rate of reference, and have been paying the same monthly mortgage receipt for a long period, due to the action of said floor clause that was not explained properly to you, you should know that legally even if you are not a consumer, you can claim to have the contract annulled. Contact us and we will help you.

Could your pension pot be wiped out – part 2 Continuing on from last week, here are a few more threats to watch out for with regards to your pensions. Pension charges and complexity - people’s pensions are being eaten away by dozens of hidden charges that can reduce the value of funds by more than a third, new research has claimed. A year-long study by the Transparency Task Force (TTF) uncovered more than 100 charges being levied on pensions. The news comes just days after the Bank of England’s chief economist complained that the way pensions were administered had become so confusing that not even he could understand them. With new style pensions the fees are clearly stated and easier to understand, however if you have older style pensions look carefully at your policies and see what charges are being made, it is usual to see such fees as Trustee fees, policy fees, investment fees and administration fees but check that they are in line with what the newer style pensions are charging and that nothing else has creeped in. It should be noted that though, that when it comes to the costs that come with investing on the markets, asset managers and bond providers play a major role in reducing these for investors by pooling their savings together and achieving significant efficiency savings that they would not be able to enjoy if they simply traded in markets independently.” The next threat is that to tax free pension saving, politicians wield immense power over pensions and can’t ever seem to resist meddling, in the UK we are all used to the principle that everyone can save tax-free into a pension - which has, amazingly, survived since 1921 – this is now under threat. Chancellor George Osborne is only thought to have dropped the idea of sweeping this away and introducing a Pension Isa, where contributions would be taxed going in but not on the way out, because he couldn’t risk enraging voters and ministers ahead of the Brexit vote. The final threat is that of a Stock market collapse, if you have a pension that is not a final salary one, then this can be a worry as the growth of your pension depends on the performance of stocks, shares, corporate and government bonds. If you are nearer to or have retired you should consider lowering the risk to your pension pot, by diversifying your risk and sticking to a more balanced / cautious portfolio. If you are going for drawdown, you are usually best with shares-based investments, which are slightly riskier but offer the opportunity for higher growth to maximise your savings. But remember you are investing for the long term and as such you will be subject to the ups and downs of the markets. Stock markets do crash but as the past has shown they do bounce back. Life through a lens

AWARD-WINNING PHOTOGRAPHER Alec Bettney is bringing his skills to RTN by focussing on life in Spain with an occasional series of pictures – capturing the human and animal world by JACK TROUGHTON AFTER ENJOYING life in Ibiza for the last 18 years, he has moved to Manuel, a community in Valencia near Xativa, and his cameras are as busy as ever. Alec “loves” RTN and was keen to contribute his photos. “All are off the cuff, not set up or staged, and spur of the moment, with only seconds to react and capture the moment.”

Alec’s sister gave him his first camera – a box Brownie – when he was aged eight, and 50 years later, he remains committed to photography; although he now uses top end Nikon cameras and equipment. When an accident left him unemployed in 1993, he returned to Chesterfield College of Art and Technology for a photography course and “enjoyed every moment”, winning an award

for the best picture of the year. He added: “I have had many of my images published in the media over the years relating to fashion, nature, people, culture, animals and pets, news scoops...and even the odd celestial body.” Alec is available for commissioned work and can be contacted on 630 981 229 or via ibizafixit@yahoo.com.

Garden features to add interest MANY OF the more interesting gardens i have visited have more than sweeps of coloured flowers and more that stimulates once senses positively.

by

Dick Handscombe Holistic gardener and author

Indeed many of the gardens are split into a series of linked mini gardens each with their unique theme and dream. One observes that having four mini gardens each on each side of the house with each one having a different special feature will add interest and prom one to walk the entire garden regularly. Many features don’t take long to add and could be in place before the hotter weather in June and July or they can be designed during summer sunbathes in order to plan creative actions for next winter. The following are popular features. 1. Fountains or fish pond with fountains to add the cooling relaxing and spiritual effect of moving water and the graceful movement of fish. You might also be able to save the local population of frogs before the last natural swamp in the area if filled in for building or road widening. 2. An aviary with part of the flying spaced covered and sheltered from the hottest suns and cold winter winds and part in a tree in the sun. 3. A colourful rockery requiring almost no watering once plants are established. 4. An outdoor covered or open cooking area, perhaps even a complete kitchen. This will allow you to move on beyond barbecue food to use Paella pans, tagine lidded pots, a solar cooker for grilling or stews, cook eastern style in a wok or cook South American style with a clay oven. By the way our book Authentic Valencian Paellas in now in English and Spanish. 5. An open gazebo for summer shade and lining in the winter with plastic sheeting to house a collection of plants in pots. The gazebo could just be for resting in a comfortable chair or lounger or to cover a fish pond or eating table and chairs for a dozen persons. 6. A formal herb garden with space to sit, preferable in the dapple shade of an adjacent tree. 7. One or two raised beds to house plant collections or grow vegetables. 8. A ten , or more, tub vegetable and herb garden using builders buckets as small raised beds. 9. A green house and adjacent potting table for raising new plants from cuttings or seeds. 10. A Hen house with a couple of hens. They make great pets and for most of the year will produce two eggs a day. 11. A summer house for shade, the outdoor summer office and overwintering garden furniture. 12. One or two evergreen shrubs trimmed into interesting shapes. Explorer 11 problems

HI, AUNTY I wonder if you might have any ideas on a problem I am having with explorer 11.I have tried loads of things and now run out of ideas. I use windows 7 home edition and have explorer 11,opera,and mozilla firefox as browsers. I mainly use mozilla and the last time I used 11 was about 2 months ago and although it did load it was very slow and kept going to a black screen and then back again. I tried to load explorer 11 yesterday and it would not load,I tried to load from run as administrator from the icon and from the program, nothing at all. I then went to microsoft to try and download it again but it would not complete saying that it could not as newer version was already installed on the computer. I then thought I would unistall it but I cant find explorer 11 in the control panel/installed program list, so couldn`t use that option. I then reinstalled a previous version from the `properties panel` I then installed a recent update I had waiting, for explorer 11 but still nothing. Any ideas? I’ve run dry on them now Thanks Regards, Michael Reponse Explorer is not in the Control Panel, but it is available to remove via the “Install and Uninstall Windows Components” section, via the Uninstall a Program windows in Control panel. Check the tick box, and it will uninstall. One thing that stops Explorer from running are addons. You may have a corrupt add on installed, which is causing it not to function correctly. You can always run Explorer in “Safe mode”, without any addons installed to confirm this. •Open a ‘Command Prompt’ window •Type cd/ to get a blank C: prompt •Type in “C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe” -extoff (where C: is your local drive) •Press ENTER

Streaming Film on Hola, I watch film on on my PC, despite having less than 1 meg, but a few days ago the usage has climbed to 100% and it is very eratic, any ideas how to get it down please? Hugh I am not 100% sure what you are asking. You are watching a streaming service using your 1Mb/s internet connection. As the streaming is probably sending information

at at least 1Mb/s then your connection will be using 100%. Also any other program that is using the internet connection at the same time will also be biting into that 1Mb/s that you have... including the usage monitor that. If you want to reduce your usage, then this will impact on the data that you are receiving, and you will suffer buffering and pixelation on your streaming.

Life Coach

WITH A background in family and matrimonial mediation, Life Coach Sara Bell helps Readers with their daily worries. If you are having diffi culties with relationships, family, work or any other aspect of your life, then help is at hand.

No time to ourselves Son is a layabout FOR MONTHS now we had looked forward to the birth of our baby. But, it has been a real culture shock. We find we have absolutely no time to ourselves. I am still trying to work from home, and I am exhausted most of the time. So is my husband, and we don’t get any real time together. It is started to affect our relationship. We don’t have any family or friends nearby, so don’t get any help.

Why don’t you go along to a parent and baby group. You will meet other parents there, and believe me, they are in the same position as yourselves, exhausted and in need of a break. Once you have got to know the others, you could suggest minding their children sometime, and they could do the same for you. Alternatively you can find a good babysitter at registered Agencies. It is important that you both get a regular break. You can’t be super-parents. Write to Sara in confidence. A pseudonym will be used if you wish. Sara reads all letters and can give a personal reply. Email your question to agonyaunt@roundtownnews.com or Sara is available for private consultations, telephone 650 054 467.

OUR SON has turned into a pot-smoking, layabout who refuses to discuss his future with his Dad and me. He won‘t take a part time job, and we don’t expect him to do well in his final exams this year. He is always short of money, and to our annoyance we have discovered that his Grandmother has been giving him money. First of all you must go to the source of his income, and speak to his Grandmother in very strong terms, that she is not helping him become independent. Perhaps she doesn’t realise the money she is giving him is being used for dope? If she doesn’t understand the implications, then paint a very clear picture of his future to her, if she continues to fund him. Take other members of the family with you for support when talking to her, stay calm and don‘t lose your temper. Then tackle your son. Hopefully the withdrawal of funds should sort him out, but he needs to realise that he can’t spend his whole life living this way, and will have to shape up at some point.

It is good to be headhunted but you can’t help but to think that in this case there is an ulterior motive to seeking out your expertise. Quite frankly with all that is going on right now you need transparency rather than any complications. An affair of the heart steps up and you are about to enter a new chapter in your personal life. The emphasis is very much of the past and the mistakes you made, but this turning over a new page sees you no longer emotionally vulnerable and entering into a partnership for all the right reasons. Have no fear, you seem to have got it right at last! It is an enthusiastic and inspiring Mercury that takes on Pluto midweek. The mystery of Pluto is the ability to stir things and to make resolve through stringent examination and self analysis. Mercury has a strong need to publicise and declare all the good news about the many changes you are making right now, and all for the good! Once bitten is twice shy because your intentions were honourable and somebody chose to make a mountain out of a molehill. Clearly they do not have your best interests at heart, and they do not know what you are capable of. Instead of retreating into your shell to lick your wounds bask in the forthcoming Moon’s phase, it should see you through! You veer between being a playful pussy cat and a tiger this week! The trusty energy of the Sun enters into Neptune and this brings things to a very necessary head. Yes you can fight if you need to, but being careful with words and ignoring the actions of others and you will bring about a solution that’s acceptable to all who are sadly involved. Active and inspiring Mercury allows you to send out a message that cannot be misconstrued this time. You have to finally put in motion all that you have worked for just lately, and that time is now. As Ceres calls time on Pluto starting the ongoing trine with Mercury is just the beginning of a very special week celebrating your newly found success.

In opposition Mars takes on Scorpio and where is your planetary leader when you need her? You will find that the challenges brought about by this hectic week serve to open a door for you, however, and it seems that it is the right time now to walk through. You are more than you think that you are, so have fun in finding this out utterly for yourself.

Email your letters to me at: kennycorris@roundtownnews.com

KENNY, I had a reading with you and you explained why my sister behaves the way that she does towards me, even though I have done nothing. You told me not to give up hope and to continue to send her love however hard it would be to send. I did this and this morning she called me for the first time in Mercury, planetary leader of your opposing sign of Gemini, many years, just to say she was sorry. Thank you for interacts with Pluto this week. There is always something of our opposite sign within us, and this week there seems to be reminding me that you should never give up! I am a lesson to be learned. No matter what, you will always retain so happy. Wenche J.

The entry of Mars stirs your innermost emotions and reminds you that there is work to be done. You seem to have got yourself into a rut somewhat and the best way out is to believe more in your skills and talents. These you will showcase because the right time and the right place scenario is pretty close. Keep one eye on what is really on offer for you

your own identity and be someone just that little bit different. Be confident and you will find the truth.

Your rigid sense of duty and great sense of timing means you will get to the top of your mountain if that is where you want to be. Be calm and know that timing is the essential element right now. You simply need the approval of others to feel that it’s the right decision, and portents are guiding you onwards towards the many changes awaiting.

A positive result this week is inspiring and it serves to show you just how far you have come. Your own specific innermost needs always seem to be second best when someone somewhere needs your tender loving care. However you seem to be focussed and ready to look at something right now from a different angle, at long last!

Neptune basks in the Sun and all is right in the World. The upheaval lately has hit you for six but you are someone who likes to pick themselves up when and if they fall. When others tell you what you should be doing you just surprise them by taking on something new. Your boundless energy needs a charge so have some much needed R and R.

Wenche, I am so happy for you. Love seems to always find a way. Whether you decide to face what happened in the past, or you just decide to move on from here, it doesn’t matter. The wonderful thing is that you are together once more, and you both have a lot to catch up on I am sure! Thank you for sharing your good news with me.

If It’s Your Birthday This Week

THE EMPHASIS of the need for stability is balanced with the hopes wishes and desires of poignant ambition and determination. Be stubborn...it’s the way you will get things done much quicker than you think!

Turtles released by Caroline Tyszka

CROWDS GATHERED in Albir at the weekend to watch four loggerhead turtles being released. The turtles had been captured in fishing nets several months before and sent to the OceanogrĂ fic centre in Valencia to be treated for their injuries. Juan Eymar from the Department of the Environment welcomed the hundreds of children and their parents who then watched as the fully recovered animals were finally set free into the Mediterranean on Sunday. Two of the loggerheads had suffered strokes from the stress of being caught in the nets, one had full pneumonia and the fourth had borderline pneumonia.

Are Shazza and Ozzy pulling our plonker? DESPITE BEING 67 years old Ozzy Osbourne is off on tour with Black Sabbath on the first of June, and with all that life entails on the road with a heavy rock band, it’s no wonder Sharon´s played the infidelity card … or is that all there is to it? Sharon is reportedly lawyering up to officially end her marriage of 33 years, but not so according to website TMZ! It’s said that Sharon is interviewing divorce attorneys and is mentally ready to initiate divorce proceedings, but there are many who find the whole thing a little fishy … let me explain. Page Six, yet another gossip website, began questioning Sharon’s motives after she and Ozzy arrived in the same car together at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles on May 12 to announce the 20th anniversary of Ozzfest, and at one point during the announcement Ozzy openly gave his wife a hug. “Sharon is the queen of publicity stunts,” wrote Page Six “there’s always deliberate drama going on, it maintains interest in them as a family,” information the website sourced from ´an entertainment industry insider,´ the plot thickens! In the meanwhile sources continue to tell both Page Six and TMZ that the couple are having marital problems, but Page Six asks ´why Ozzy’s alleged cheating, which Sharon has discussed in the past is suddenly grounds for divorce? The plot gets thicker! Let’s just remind ourselves that Ozzy is off on tour in Hungary on June 1st, and when you drop that into the pot and give it a little stir you come out with a very interesting spoonful of something-or-other. News of Sharon and Ozzy’s split broke on May 7th, then 2 days later Sharon opened up on US show The Talk saying “I’m 63 years of age and I can’t keep living like this, I’m not with him, I just need time to think about what I really want for the rest of my life?” Heartfelt stuff indeed, but on the other side of the coin Page Six got it right for me when they wrote “Sharon’s a very smart woman, it would be very hard for Ozzy to carry on an affair under her nose without her knowing about it, if it´s a stunt, it´s got him almost as much press as when he bit that bat’s head off!” What side of the fence are you sitting on?

CARA DELEVIGNE has proved to be a spirited young lady over the last 9 months or so, and she´s at it again, and this one could well go down as her finest moment so far. She flew from London to Paris recently for her sister’s birthday but almost didn´t get there. It all kicked off after her luggage was pulled aside for a random check at Paris’ Gard du Nord. An onlooker told The Sun: “It was a full-on meltdown; it was like she thought she didn’t have to abide by the same rules as everyone else just because she’s famous, then she got down on her knees and put her hands together as if she was praying for the whole thing to be over, it was bizarre!” Cara! CARA!!

IN 1993 Edinburgh man Irving Welsh wrote Trainspotting, his first novel, and it went on to become a cult movie classic, and in 1996 it was nominated for three BAFTAs and an Oscar, with Irving ultimately taking home one BAFTA for the screenwriting. Its old news there´s to be a follow up movie, but the new news is that it’s to be called T2 and will be released in January next year. Irving wrote three more novels before penning ´Porno´ in 2002, and T2 is based on that book following the gang from Trainspotting as they reunite to the backdrop of, yep you guessed it, the pornography business. Filming is taking place in Edinburgh, Bathgate and Glasgow. Sex n´ Drugs n´ PornoRoll.

THE ´CARRY On´ franchise ran from 1958 - 1992 and produced 31 low budget comedy movies that will forever be revered for their bawdy humour, double entendres by the shedload, and the copious amounts a female flesh on offer a million years before political correctness was even born. Not one but two new movies have been commissioned ´Carry On Doctors´ and ´Carry On Campus´ with aims to breathe new life into the franchise when they reach the screens in 2017. The films are being written by Tim Dawson and Susan Nickson, the team behind BBC 2´s ´Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps´ that ran for 78 episodes across 9 series. Can’t Wait!

THE LONG arm of the law has finally caught up with singer Vanessa Hudgens in the wake of her and her boyfriend actor Austin Butlers´ Valentine’s Day trip to Arizona where they decided to carve their names on a rock-face and post a pic of their handiwork on Instagram. It seems Vanessa quickly got on what she had done and removed the picture from her Instagram then put her hands up to her misdemeanour. She then worked with officials to hunt down the carving giving them information of where to find it and was fined $1,000 for her trouble. The money will be given to volunteer group ´Friends of the Forest´ to help restore the rock wall. The Price of Love huh? SIR LENNY Henry is now 57 years old and is going about the business of using his elevated position in society in a very brave way. Lenny is of course the founder of Comic Relief, and as such is prone to get on his high horse from time to time and, talking to The Sunday People last week, weighed in to Will Smith amongst others. “If a movie makes more than a hundred dollars, some black people stop being black – they become Will Smith,” said the man from Dudley, then The Oscars got a bashing with “The only brown person nominated was the bear in Leo Dicaprio’s film,” a very Lenny Henry way of putting things. We all love you Lenny, but take it easy buddy.

Horse rescue centre to present evidence in court by patricia thompson

The rescue of these 14 horses in 2014 from a bankrupt horse dealer was our biggest and most expensive operation to date. Each horse was neglected, starving, and undoubtedly very near death. Rescued: March 2014 The situation we encountered at Callosa de Segura can only be described as a living hell. Nine donkeys and 14 horses were being kept in the most appalling conditions – chained to a wall 24 hours a day with very limited access to food and water, they were all literally starv-ing. This would be our biggest and most challenging rescue to date, but we knew we had to act – even though saving such a large number of horses at once would put huge strain on our centre, both financially and in terms of space in our fields. We were initially contacted by the National Association for the Defense of Animals (in Span-ish, La Asociación Nacional para la Defensa de los Animales) and El Refugio del Burrito, a major donkey rescue organisation based in Malaga, with roots in the United Kingdom. The two animal rights organisations had made a criminal complaint against the owner of the yard, who allegedly neglected his animals after going bankrupt. El Refugio del Burrito had received legal permission to seize the nine donkeys from the building, but couldn’t proceed without also removing the 14 horses on the Callosa de Segura property, located about half an hour northeast of Murcia. But who in Spain would take 14 near-death horses? We would, of course. So after El Refugio del Burrito contacted us for help, we jumped into action. The rescue day was a mammoth effort. Once we arrived, we witnessed just how terribly these animals had been treated.

The horses and donkeys were all filthy, terrified and stick-thin, chained to walls inside a fall-ing-down building. The stallions were wild and trying to attack anyone who went near them. On top of all that, the bankrupt owner was so irate authorities were concerned he would have a heart attack. Eventually, we brought all 14 horses home. We named them Maverick, Harley, Wally, Chance, Alice, Freeda, Bettina, Moon, Sally, Maisy, Grace, EJ, Rosie and Liberty. To our astonishment, just two weeks after the rescue, Liberty gave birth to a healthy foal – an incredible feat considering her extremely malnourished condition. Sadly though, Lily the foal soon became an orphan after we lost Liberty due to intestinal problems from a prior injury. Two operations were performed to try to save Liberty, but unfortunately there was nothing that we could do to save her. But little Lily was immediately adopted by Rosie, who had been chained next to Liberty be-fore their rescue from the squalid Callosa de Segura property. You can read more about their heartwarming story here. We believe this rescue was probably the largest in Spain’s history, yet we have received no financial support from the government nor courts which asked us to remove the horses. As at May 2016, we have spent more than €66,000 on the rescue of these horses, including feed, veterinary care, horse hospital bills and the farrier. We have managed to cover these expenses using generous donations from our supporters, funds raised through our charity stores, and money from our very own hip pocket. Unfortu-nately, there are currently no tax concessions or financial support for charities in Spain, even as we provide an essential service to authorities. Nonetheless, we are so pleased to see these horses now en-

joying life at our rescue centre. The stallions, now castrated, have gradually tamed and no longer fear human contact. The remaining horses spend their days in the fresh air and sunshine, and will never again be chained to walls. In December 2015 we said goodbye to Wally, who was in his 30s and died peacefully in his sleep of natural causes, which is a lovely way for an old horse to go. Life has certainly changed for these beautiful animals, and they’re enjoying every moment of their second chance. Seeing their happiness and return to health is exactly the reason we move heaven and earth to rescue them and so many others.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Rules of word stress

Those of you who have children at Spanish schools, or have contact with the way Spanish children learn their own language, may be aware of how they are taught the rules for the accents on words.

Of course they already know how to pronounce each word perfectly, so what they need to learn is a series of written rules, and they learn wonderful words in the process like “esdrújula”; although we will never need to know what it means! Although they plough through these things at school, many Spanish people are unsure of where accents should be written on words, because to them the subject is purely academic. We as foreign language learners need to have a completely different approach to the subject from Spanish school children, as we do not have their advantage of already knowing how each word should sound. So for us, the accents on words provide us with essential information about how we should pronounce a word. The great thing about Spanish, as I never tire of telling my students, is that it is a regular language with consistent spelling rules which tell us everything we need to know about how a word should be said. This means that what might seem irrelevant to a Spanish school child is a life-saver for those of us who are learning the language. Before we get on to the accents though, we need to learn the basic rules of word-stress. They are very straightforward - so here goes. Rule number one: when a word ends in a vowel, or the consonants “s” or “n” the beat of

the word falls on the last but one syllable, (a syllable is the section of sound in a word.) For example: MEsa, doMINgo, HoraDAda, LIBros, JOven. Rule number two: when a word ends in a consonant other than “s” or “n” the beat goes on the final syllable. For example: fenomenAL, reLOJ, reguLAR, feLIZ. That in theory covers all eventualities, but there is a third rule, and here it is: any variation from these two previous rules is marked with an accent. For example: sábado, sofá, lápiz, estación. These four words “should” obey either rule one or rule two, but as their pronunciation does not fit in with either, an accent shows us how the rule is broken. This might take you a while to “get your head round” (as they say) but I can assure you that all Spanish words work in exactly the same way. This means we can have confidence to give the right emphasis to every word we say, as we never have the awful “to deSERT someone in a DEsert” problem that we have in English. There is one more rather important thing I haven’t told you about this which completes the whole picture, and that is exactly what can be described as a syllable. I said before that it is a “section of sound” in a word, and with simple words like “cortinas”, I think it is easy to work out that it has three syllables. However, there is something we need to know about vowel combinations, which sometimes count as one beat, and sometimes count as two beats. This will take a while to explain so I will leave it till next week. It’s very exciting.

The jobs a bad ‘un by

Chris Ashley

Writer & Broadcaster

PETER COOK & Dudley Moore recorded a very rude alcohol driven sketch which involved Jayne Mansfield & a lobster. They pondered the question – “What’s the worst job you’ve ever had?” How about ‘Whale Mucus Collector’? Yes it is an actual gig. A drone is flown over an area where the whale is wallowing – tracks our leviathan until “Thar she blows” and the airborne waste product is caught in the drone’s undercarriage for some poor scientific so & so to analyse it for bacteria. Five years of intensive university studies to sift through whale snot. Makes me feel better about failing the dread 11 plus. From a personal point of view the worst was also the best. My first radio job (the good bit) was in Katanning Western Australia (the bad bit). When I told some chums they were less than forth coming with optimism. “Strewth mate, it’s not quite the a***hole end of the World – but you can see it from there.” The radio station was way outside the one horse town (both butchers had their eyes on that nag) down a dirt track & then a dry river bed. Suddenly out of nowhere a whacking great mast with a caravan parked underneath it – yes! The Tower of Power.

The caravan was not only the studio it was also the accommodation for 4 of us DJ’s and this was the middle of an Australian summer – Unilever Armpit Sniffers would have had a sweat-fest orgy (Yes! this also is a genuine job - testing deodorant results). Something that preyed on my mind, it was rumoured, if a chap spends time near a transmitter mast his Mother is never going to be a Grandmother. As I’m a father of 3 it appears I beat the seedless odds – which my offspring may feel is a mixed blessing. The job I missed out on due to my ignorance & arrogance happened in the late 1970’s, when a shy sporting couple came to see me at Radio Trent in Nottingham (clue there & here’s another), he was a copper & she worked in insurance. They wanted someone to handle their PR & help raise money for equipment. When I asked what they did and was told figure skating, to my eternal shame – I scoffed. After all this was the halcyon Clough/Taylor football & the Hadlee/Rice cricket eras in Nottinghamshire – who’s interested in Dancing on Ice? I give you Sarajevo 1984 – Bolero – perfect 6’s. To paraphrase that great philosopher – Homer Simpson – Dooooooooooooooh!

Lamb & potato salad

Although the recipe calls for lamb tenderloins, you could certainly substitute left over grilled lamb with excellent results. 3 lb lamb fillets 1/4 cup vegetable oil 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 cup fresh mint, chopped 2 lb baby new potatoes, scrubbed 2 red peppers, roasted and chopped 1 lb asparagus, blanched and chopped 2 tbsp fresh chives, chopped 1/3 cup lime juice 1/2 cup olive oil 4 egg yolks 2 tbsp olive oil DIRECTIONS 1. Steam the new potatoes until tender, then drain. If the potatoes are larger than bite sized, cut them into halves or quarters as appropriate. Set aside. 2. Blanch the asparagus, plunge

into ice water, then drain on paper towel lined wire racks. Set aside. 3. Preheat the barbecue on HIGH, and place red peppers on grids. Char on all sides, then remove from the heat. Place the peppers in a paper bag to cool, then slip off the charred skins; seed and chop. 4. Grill the lamb on HIGH for 2 - 3 minutes per side. Cool, then slice. 5. To make the dressing, place the yolks, garlic, and lime juice in a blender, or in the bowl of a food processor. With the motor running, add the oils in a thin stream. Add the chopped mint leaves. Season with salt and pepper if desired. 6. Toss the lamb, potatoes, peppers and blanched asparagus with the dressing, and garnish with fresh chives.

Clams a la marinera... Clams for me are one of the best seafood products on the Costa Blanca and easy to find in any fishmongers or supermarket.

Clams a la Marinera is a delicious and easy tapa recipe, simple dish made with fresh clams, cooking in a white wine, onions and garlic sauce, you can even add A little chilli if you like a little spice...great for lunch or a light dinner! 2 lbs. medium clams (cleaned) 1 large yellow onion, finely chopped 8 oz. white wine olive oil 2 tbsp flour pinch of pepper Pinch of Salt 2 cloves garlic, sliced 1 lemon 1 bay leaf 1 tablespoon tomato paste Tbsp flat leaf parsley, finely chopped Add the clams to a bowl and add 2 tablespoons of salt

and cover with water, and set aside for about 1 hour, this will release any grit they have inside of the clams Chop the onion and slice garlic. In a large frying pan, add a drizzle of olive oil. When it is hot, add in chopped onion and sautĂŠ until they turn golden. Add 2 tbsp of flour, the pepper, and a clove of garlic. Once everything has turned a golden colour, add a 1/2 cup of water, white wine and the tomato paste. Add 3 slices of lemon and season well, Cook for 2-3 minutes more.

Pour the onion mixture into the saucepan with the clams. Cook on low until the sauce thickens, stirring often for about 4 minutes. When cooked add your parsley and serve in bowls and serve hot. You can serve with a crisp baguette or slices of pitta bread. Food tip: Cut a fresh lemon into wedges. After you are finished handling the fish, or seafood squeeze the lemon onto your hands, rub your hands together, and rinse with water, this will eliminate the smell.

Diabetes support DIABETES SUPPORT meetings continue on the Costa Blanca with guest speakers and Dorothy Cook, a semi-retired UK community Diabetes Nurse Specialist. by JACK TROUGHTON UNDER THE umbrella of HELP of Denia and the Marina Alta, Dorothy successfully launched a support network for the English-speaking population of the Marina Alta in 2014 and meetings are now held in La Xara and Teulada. And Dorothy, as a volunteer, also meets with individuals to help and encourage them on their ‘diabetes journey’. On Friday 10th June, the support group will meet at the HELP Activity Centre in Avenida Oeste, La Xara where the guest speaker is Leigh Patterson, ‘the Foot Angel’, who with Dorothy will explain ‘Complications of Diabetes’. And on Tuesday 14th June, a meeting is being held in the MABs room of the IMED building in Cami Calvari, Teulada. The speaker is nutritionalist Ann Mather, presenting ‘The Nutritional Approach: Diabetes, Blood Pressure and Cholesterol’. The complications of diabetes are serious and while they can be scary, people can take comfort in the fact that complications can be reduced by managing the disease appropriately. Self-management support is essential for all people with diabetes and helpful to those helping those living with the condition – all are welcome at the meetings. And Ann has highlighted the debate – see www.diabetes.org.uk – about the amount of carbohydrate that should be recommended. At present the UK recommends 55% of daily intake to be in the form of carbs – the rest of Europe 40%; a view concurring with nutritional science as backed by Ann. She will explain the need to create a balance – how to estimate carbohydrate portions and how to monitor the effect on blood sugar levels. Both meetings – the last before September – run between 4.30pm and 6.30pm, a two-hour programme that allows time for Dorothy to answer any questions in relation to diabetes. For more information call Dorothy on 634 349 240 or email diabetes.helpofdenia@gmail.com.

Life on the road

THE N332 team of experts - which offers drivers in Spain advice – were guests on the Orihuela Branch of the Royal British Legion last week. It was a full house at the meeting to welcome the team, Francisco Morales and Mark Nolan, as they discussed many of the problems that expat drivers face after moving to Spain. Mark grabbed the audience’s attention from the start – advising how to recognise an unmarked police car; there is an increasing number of motorists being stopped by bogus Guardia Civil officers. The team also discussed a number of matters including distraction crime, vehicle documents, footwear, warning triangles, pets, and loads in moving vehicles. More information can be found at N332.es at the website and on Facebook. The two speakers were accompanied by Nicholas Bradford, the occasion being used to present the former West Midland Traffic Policeman with a token of appreciation for his help with the N332 project, and Paul Piccio, the President of C.L.A.R.O. who attended the event as part of his efforts to find out more about local clubs and groups that are operating on the Costa Blanca.

Showtime cancelled

THE CARDENAL Belluga Theatre Group has been forced to cancel its summer production ‘Showtime’ scheduled for performances on 23rd and 24th June. Rehearsals were launched in January for the show at the Cardenal Belluga Theatre in San Fulgencio. However, the show director has resigned and there is no one to fill the position and complete preparations. Chairman Tom Ford said it was hoped to perform Showtime in October if a new show director could be appointed and anyone who had bought tickets would be refunded. “The existing cast are very upset about the situation as they had put a lot of time into the show,” he said. “And, after all, the show’s proceeds go to local charities.”

Vega Baja Premier Golf League by patricia thompson

With two Divisions North and South, the Championship Final is to determine the Premier title between the top team from each Division and third and fourth place would be from the second place teams from each Division. The format for this 2015/2016 Final is Singles Matchplay team event, playing from Full Handicap Allowance with a slight difference; each Hole that is won earns a point a draw half a point. Therefore, there is a maximum of 18 points available for each singles match. The Society with the most points wins the team match. This allows all the Holes to be played. The two teams competing for the prestigious title of Premier Champions were EuroToffs G.S. Northern Champions and El Valle G.S. Southern Champions. Third place was competed for by La Manga North G S for the South and Altea G.S. for the North. The Lo Romero Golf course was in very good

We all know that problems have existed with our green over the last few years and were looking to the future and were not disappointed. Group B saw 3 teams on 40 points and the team emerging as winners were Alan Phillips and Daphne Ramage by a 2 shot margin. Group C saw Chris Evans and Keith Beaman triumphant while in Group D, Ritva McAuliffe and Gary Kent were in top spot. In fairness the semi finals were both one sided affairs seeing the pairings of Roy Lees and John Pittaway and Ritva McAuliffe and Gary Kent going through to the Final. The Final, that was exceptionally well supported by our Members, was all square after 4 ends with both teams winning just one shot per end but then John and Roy took a grip of the match and went into the last end with a lead of 8 - 3. Under 16 national rugby competition Tournament

reaches semi-finals

by patricia thompson

Last weekend saw the Murcia region host this years under 16’s schoolboy Spanish national rugby competition. Teams from all over Spain and its islands came to the region for 2 days of rugby in temperatures souring above 30º. It wasn’t like that in my rugby days, more like single figures and a mud bath! Murcia region were represented by Cartagena and Murcia 15. These are the top 2 teams in the region with Cartagena being undefeated in the region. Because they are the regional champions they were both in the top pool and so matched against some of the best most exceptional teams in Spain. Soporting some of Spain’s sportsmen of the future, both Murcia county teams were hindered by numbers and with injuries making both teams a little light on players which

in turn meant less subs on the benches. It’s only a game, honest, well that’s what my son tells me who is currently recovering from a dislocated wrist from a previous game. What am I saying? No it’s not just a game, tiddlywinks is a game, this is rugby and rugby is a way of life! Anyway, as you may have gathered, Murcia region did not have the greatest results. Both teams losing every match they played. Because of this they faced each other for

the wooden spoon. Cartagena stepped up a gear and Murcia had nothing in reserve. End result 15-7 and Cartagena remain undefeated under 16 regional champions. It is only a game and the weekend was enjoyed by both players and supporters, a nice end to a fantastic season. If you want to get involved in any way, male or female, young or old, there is a team near you. Call me for details. Peter Clarke 620 340 548.

Sucina Golf Society, Roda Golf, Tuesday, 17th May Our first of two games this year at Roda, 32 players turning up for an Individual Stableford, counting towards Player of the Year 2016, and in addition a team game were all 4 scores counted. Another warm day with an early start. The first players teeing off at 9 o’clock, so some alarm clocks had been set very early. Presentation of the prizes was held back at Franc y Louise Bar in Sucina and sandwiches were provided for the players. The Course was in good condition, though hollow tinning on the greens during play did cause some frustrations and hold ups for players on their approach to the greens. No mention of this had been made prior to, or on the day, so on

the return to the Bar after the game, there were more than one complaints from players. Hopefully in the future Roda will provide us with advance warning. The winners on the day were: Div 1 – Roger Major 38 pts, Div 2 – Tommy McDonnell 38 pts and Div 3 – Mike Harding 39 pts. Some excellent scores and I am sure our Handicap Secretary will have his “ scissors “ out this month! NTP’s went to: Hole 2Colin Griffiths, Hole 7 Dave Hurst, Hole 11 John Storey and Hole 13 Tony Syme. Overall Winning Team comprised of: John Storey, Ian White, Alan Leonard & Roger Major with a total of 136pts. Fantastic results and well done to all our Winners on the day. Our next outing is on Tuesday 21st June at Lo Romero.

THE LINEA Directa National Bowls Competition enters its second week and the semi-finals with organisers celebrating the high standards on the green. In the Ladies singles, there has already been a major upset with current champion Indalo’s Jan Dando falling in the quarter final to former pro golfer Simone Morgan, from Santa Maria. Simone now meets Ann Eagle of San Miguel, the 2007 national Champion, in the semi-final; Quesdada’s Mel Highland, who beat the emerald Isle’s Mary Whitelock in the last round, facing Julie Lincoln. In the Men’s Singles the Emerald Isle’s Frank Close goes into the semi-final in good form against Chris Brazier of Quesada. And it could be an all Emerald Isle final with the home club’s Dennis Rhodes meeting Martin Foulcer of Vistabella, in the other semi-final. The semi-finals of the Men’s Pairs sees Dennis and John Pooley paired against Dave Blackie and Scott Malden; while Harry Rhodes and Terry Morgan will meet Paul Parkes and Julian Pering. Ann Eagle also features in the semi-final’s of the Ladies Pairs competition with her partner, San Miguel Club Secretary, Pat McKewan. Their opponents will be club colleagues Lin Miller and Chris Parsons. In the second semi, the current champions Jacqui Johnston with partner Mel Highland face stiff opposition from Carol Broomfield and Peta Rhodes, also of Quesada. Jacqui and Mel also feature in the semi finals of the Mixed Triples where they are joined by Mel’s husband Colin, as they face Tenerife’s sole representatives, the Cathcart family. National team manager Graham will be partnered by brother Robert and mother Grace as the trio representing Teide Bowls Club, attempt to reach their first ever Nationals Final. The second triples semi will pitch Ann and Carl Eagle with Bob Nesbitt against Frank and Dave Close and Yvonne Mallaburn.

Funeral arrangements in Spain ´Living in Spain´? If so then there is obviously a chance you may die here, whether you want to or not. Statistics show that almost 20% of men die before they reach 65 years? And those who reach 65 years then have a 50/50 chance to live an additional 17 years.

Tel: 650461816 Email: keith.rocamer@live.co.uk ROCAMER ´SERVING THE COMMUNITY FOR OVER 80 YEARS´

There are many pre funeral arrangements you can choose from. In the UK many people have life insurance policies but they are slow to pay out at death. But as funerals in the UK can take place many weeks after death there is not a problem with funeral payment. In Spain however it is very different. Funerals usually take place within days of death and payment has to be made before the funeral. It is therefore wise to have your spanish funeral arrangements in place. In Spain over 22 million people have funeral insurance. That´s a massive amount of people and tells you that funeral insurance is affordable, trustworhy and dependable. Unfortunately, some british based funeral plans who accost people at shopping centres, know that expats have little or no knowledge of spanish funeral insurance and play upon expat fears and give misinformation. The next time your accosted get a quote then give me a call. You will be surprised at the price differential especially now you see what more you get for your money.

Here are some quick comparisons:

NO ADVANCE PAYMENT NO PAYMENT AT DEATH With Rocamer funeral insurance services there is nothing to pay in advance (for under 71years) and a guarantee of nothing to be paid by your family at death. All costs, taxes and fees are covered. You and your partner will be repatriated to Spain no matter where in the world death occurs. And should you die as the result of an accident your family will receive an additional 6000.00€ Rocamer take care of all arrangements and legalities for cremation or burial. Death certificates in spanish and english obtained on behalf of the family. There is obviously a lot more to tell but if you care to ask you will always receive an honest answer with no obligation. So ask away and don´t worry you will not be pestered with calls and if you wish me to come to your house that´s okay too. I look forward to receiving your call or email Keith Rocamer Funeral Services

Toyota Prius Plug-in FORTY PER CENT of AA call outs are for battery related issues. So says the patrolman who attends the flat battery of the Toyota Prius Plug-in I am testing. This test has been fraught with complications. The reason I try the Prius Plug-in is because it’s one of the few cars to supposedly escape the London Congestion Charge. But it doesn’t. No matter what vehicle is driven the driver has to part with money it seems. Transport for London (TfL) charges £10 just to register a vehicle even if it’s a low pollution type like the Prius Plug-in. They take a minimum of 10 days to inform the driver whether they need to pay the daily congestion charge. I wasn’t informed of this when I booked my trip earlier in the year and so with no time to inform TfL it was necessary to pay £11.50 a day to drive in London during the day, Monday to Friday. I could’ve been driving any other car because they are all charged this rate. Then there is a flat battery - not the fault of the Prius but of my little button-pushing daughters. Despite my checks I miss the fact that the internal rear light has been left on and so having left the car in the secure car park in Bloomsbury Square on the Friday night I try to access it on the following Monday only to find that the electronic keyfob does not work. Fortunately, there is a key inside the keyfob, which allows access to the vehicle in such situations. So at least I can put my luggage inside and then tackle the flat battery problem later in the day. On my return the helpful Secure Parking attendant offers to phone the AA for me and an hour and 10 minutes later (it is Monday rush hour) a patrolman arrives. The car park has a height restriction so the AA van cannot access it but that doesn’t pose a problem because he brings his bag of tricks with him and somehow is able to charge the battery and get

the car started. “A standard 10amp interior light will drain a car battery over the course of two days,” he informs me. It’s an easy mistake to make because the underground car park is lit and this distracts the motorist from any lights that are left on inside the vehicle. The Mercedes parked next to us also has its interior light on. Despite this the Secure Parking attendant tells me: “There’s only one breakdown every two months here.” Of course, that problem could have happened in any car. For the owner of the Prius Plug who lives in London and has registered their Prius for £10 and does not pay any further congestion charge, they are smiling because as Toyota claims it will travel over 15 miles on a fully charged battery which is adequate for most journeys across the capital. It is so silent that on our arrival in the city a professional looking woman who should know better simply walks straight out in front of it without looking. A few moments later a parcel delivery man walks up the centre of a side street seemingly oblivious to the fact that the Prius is behind him. We end up in this side street after the sat nav has recalculated the journey to Drury Lane from Southampton for the umpteenth time after I do not follow its instructions to take me down a one way street. There are certainly a lot of challenges to the motorist when driving in London. When there is a heavy downpour on the return journey visibility becomes increasingly poor in the dark and it is surprising how confusing the many traffic lights can become

coupled with incredibly poor road signage. But overall the sat nav is an aid that does see us escape the capital along the A4. It is not long before we re-join the M3 and within a few hours are all happily tucked up in our beds. With regards comfort, the Prius scores highly and it is even equipped with heated front seats. There is ample room inside for all of us and although it is only a hatchback our cumbersome tandem pushchair fits, which is just as well because we do a lot of walking in London and our little daughters can only walk so far. It is frustrating that when we park in the Secure Parking underground car park that it is quite low, so that on opening the boot it actually touches the ceiling, marking the boot regardless of how careful you are. In town it is economical and on the motorway it is surprisingly fast.
