Maura awarded MBE Friday, July 15 - Thursday, July 21 2016

PEOPLE’S CHAMPION Maura Hillen – the leader of successful property campaigning group AUAN – has been awarded an honorary MBE for services to the British community in Spain. by jack troughton

The President of Abusos Urbanisticos Almanzora No! said she was “delighted” to accept the award on behalf of every member of the protest group defending the rights of homeowners. And in March last year and under Maura’s leadership, the Spanish government changed the law following AUAN submissions; homeowners buying in good faith must now be paid compensation before an illegal property is demolished.

Maura is an Irish national and becomes an honorary Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. The AUAN campaigns for the legalisation of homes in the Almanzora Valley, where thousands of properties – mainly British owned – lack a final habitation certificate. A non-profit making and non-political organisation, it lobbies the Spanish authorities at local, regional and national levels for property owners’ rights over homes “currently classified as illegal” and provides information and support and has some 500 members. It has been quite a week for ‘girl power’, it seems the Spice Girls are to reform – well at least three of them - for a gig next summer and they have been working on new material. Posh and Sporty are the two girls missing; leaving Scary, Baby and Ginger to prepare for a concert in London´s Hyde Parkñ well, that’s if the comeback goes ahead.

A word from JT Congratulations to Theresa May on becoming Britain’s second woman Prime Minister after the Iron Lady, Baroness Margaret Thatcher. She faces the challenge of uniting her party following Brexit and the small matter of negotiating the UK’s withdrawal from the EU. Mrs May has proved her mettle as Home Secretary, the longest serving politician in the post for 60 years, and at RTN Towers we hope to soon see some positive news regarding our positions as expats. Congratulations also go to Maura Hillen for her well-deserved MBE and being at the helm of the AUAN in Andalucia. The group’s finest hour was winning a change in Spanish law, insuring home owners who bought in good faith are paid compensation before properties are demolished.

A non-profit making and non-political organisation, it lobbies the Spanish authorities at local, regional and national levels for property owners’ rights over homes “currently classified as illegal” and provides information and support and has some 500 members. Maura, who is also the councillor for Tourism and International Relations in Albox, Almeria, said: “I am very pleased and delighted to accept this award not only for myself but on behalf of every member of AUAN who has played no small part in defending the rights of homeowners in Spain, most especially committee members, past and present, and those who came before me as president of AUAN. “This award is a recognition and vindications of their efforts and perseverance as much as it is of mine.” TIRELESS British Ambassador Simon Manley paid tribute to her “tireless contribution” to aiding property owners in Spain and the “professionally-run” AUAN. He said: “Since 2008, Maura Hillen MBE has made a tireless contribution towards resolving the property problems that affect thousands of British homeowners in Spain. I am very pleased that Her Majesty The Queen has approved this honour, which recognises her dedication and resilience. “Under her leadership, AUAN is a professionally-run, well-respected organisation that has secured expert legal advice and in turn proposed realistic solutions to the Spanish regional and national authorities.” Mr Manley added: “In March last year, the Criminal Code was modified following proposals from AUAN that judges take into account that most owners purchased in good faith, and that compensation should be paid prior to any demolition.

“That was a significant step forward in reforming a legal system that AUAN argued had failed to adequately to recognise the rights of homeowners or compensate for their losses. “I know Maura intends to keep campaigning for more action to resolve outstanding cases and to increase the legal security for future buyers.” And Charles Svoboda, of the Benissa-based AUN and of the national federation FAUN, said: “Congratulations to Maura. Long may she and AUAN prosper – it appears both will be needed for some time. “Our association is very pleased and proud to have provided some early day guidance and support for a new sibling and then witnessed its success under Maura’s inspired management.”

THE GUARDIA Civil rescued a three month baby who had been left in a car whilst the parents went shopping. by Angela Baker The incident occurred on Monday morning at 10.45 am in Roquetas de Mar, Almeria. A security guard patrolling the shopping area notice the young baby alone inside the vehicle and alerted the authorities, who quickly attended the scene. One of them managed to access the small child by carefully putting their arm through the narrow gap in the window, opening the door and removing them. Whilst crying and feeling hot officers reported that the baby was well and that minutes later the parents arrived at the scene. Fire started deliberately A FIRE which caused hundreds of British tourist to be evacuated has now been reported as contained by the authorities. by Angela Baker Black plumes of smoke could be seen from the beaches of Gibraltar as the forest fires broke out at 1pm on Tuesday in two separate areas of Andalucía with emergency services spending all night in the area trying to bring it under control. Around 420 guests from the Hotel Aldiana in La Línea de la Concepción, Cádiz, mostly Brits and Germans, had to spend a night in a sports centre because of the threat of the flames spreading to the town. Four of the fires started in La Linea and another in San Roque with one hundred firefighters and volunteers helping to extinguish the flames which were spurred on by the current heatwave of 40 plus degrees. Helicopters and aircrafts were brought in to douse the flames, with huge swathes of water dropped from the sky whilst troops fought the fire from the ground. Juan Carlos Ruiz Boix, San Roque’s mayor, and the local fire brigade confirmed that the fire was now under control but was more than likely started deliberately. He said: “It was impossible” for five fires to have occurred in such close proximity without it being arson. An official investigation has now be launched into the incident.

Matador dies in ring by Caroline Tyszka A 29-year-old matador died on Saturday having been gored during a bull fight that was being televised across the nation. Victor Barrio was in the Teruel bull ring when he was struck in the thigh and chest as the 1,166 pound bull flipped him over. Returning for a second time, the animal’s horns penetrated one of the matador’s lungs and his aorta whilst he lay on the ground. Although paramedics were immediately at the scene they were unable to save Barrio who died in the bullring’s infirmary. On Monday the matador was buried in his local town, Sepulveda, with many friends and family lining the streets shouting “Torero! Torero!” as the hearse travelled to the church in the centre of the town. Barrio is the first professional matador to die during a bullfight in Spain since 1985 although two matador assistants were fatally gored in 1992. Meanwhile in Pamplona this weekend at the San Fermin festival a Japanese man was gored in the chest and a Spanish man in the arm during the town’s bull-run, both were treated for their injuries. Many of the participants in the festival work black armbands on the Sunday to honour the fallen matador.

First steps for New Health Center at San Juan Beach by Rhiannan Bell Although nothing is yet definitive, there is hope for the residents of San Juan that they may get their own Health Centre. On Wednesday, the Mayor, Gabriel Echavarri, and the regional Director for Health, Emilia Rodríguez, visited a plot of land being considered for the construction of a new health centre and community centre near the Playa de San Juan. The plot stands at 5,000 square metres and is located at the junction of Avenida Locutor Vicente Hipólito and Arquitecto Félix Candela, next to the Arena sports centre. Despite claims of being the wealthiest part of the city,

there is only a small clinic situated in the immediate area but it struggles to meet the requirements of the influx of people during the long summer period and the staff is under pressure morning and night to treat clients in such limited space. The plans to provide a larger facility would alleviate a lot of pressure for the medical practitioners. The president for the Association of Neighbours in Playa de San Juan, Jose Caracena, expressed the interest and hope on behalf of the residents claiming these two new projects would enhance the area further. He added, “Most people have nowhere to go, especially in winter, when this area is less populated and there are not many social facilities available.”

Fire kills two children TWO CHILDREN have died and another was in a critical condition following a fire in their home on Monday morning. The fire broke out in the ground floor apartment in the Sant

Marti area of Barcelona, killing the two young children aged six and four. The third child, just two-years-old was taken to a local hospital and was said to be in a critical condition. The mother, who was in the property, was treated for burns as fire teams struggled to access the apartment because of

bars fitted to the windows. Two neighbours, both aged 18, attempted to rescue the family but ended up fleeing from the flames and needing treatment at the scene. Four other neighbours also required treatment having entered the apartment to try and save the victims.

Spain faces Eurozone fine by Caroline Tyszka

EU chiefs met this week to decide if a fine should be imposed on Spain for violating budget rules. Twenty–eight finance ministers gathered on Tuesday to debate how Spain and Portugal should be penalised for failing to slash their budget deficits. It was felt that any potential penalty was likely to be soft in order to avoid an anti EU backlash. This is new crisis for the EU as no Eurozone member has ever been penalised before for failing to meet their targets. Under EU rules, the executive may impose fines of up to 0.2 percent of GDP if a member repeatedly ignores the 3 percent of GDP deficit limit. Defending his country’s position, Spanish Finance Minister Luis de Guindos said he was optimistic the commission would avoid “the sheer nonsense that a fine against Spain would signify.” He has proposed hiking corporate taxes to avoid any fine. “We are going to propose a measure regarding corporate taxes that will raise €6 billion” he said. Spain halved its deficit from nearly 10 percent in 2012. However, it remains off the 4.2 percent target set by the commission and above the 3 percent EU threshold. The two countries now have 10 days to lobby the EU to impose no penalty. The European Commission, the EU’s executive arm, will consider their arguments and will decide on sanctions within 20 days.

Migration begins THE HIGH season has arrived in the Costa Blanca causing heavy traffic on many of the region’s roads. Although traditionally most Spanish do not take their holiday’s until August, many have taken advantage of the schools breaking up to travel from inland areas to the cool sea breezes of the resorts up and down the southern coastline. In the first weekend of July Alicante saw 700,000 vehicle movements as the beaches soon became standing room only. During the coming weeks the figures are expected to soar with many other European nationals also travelling through the country to begin their summer holiday. People are being asked to remain patient if stuck in traffic and ensure that they have plenty of water to drink in case of heavy delays.

Keep the beaches clean THE DEPARTMENT of Beaches and Public Service in Vera has begun a summer awareness campaign to keep the beaches clean. by Angela Baker Last week 1,000 ashtrays and 1,000 bags for the collection of dog poo were given out to the general public in a bid to raise awareness about keeping the coastline and beaches free from unnecessary rubbish. The conical ashtrays, which have a lid, have been specially designed to cope with cigarette butts, gum and sunflower seed shells, all of which are not biodegradable. Francisca García, Councillor for Beaches and Public Services said at the beginning of the campaign that “even though most people are very responsible with the care of their pets and their behaviour, we’ve found that there are still pet owners who do not think to collect the droppings of their dogs, causing inconvenience for others.”

Water shortages for farmers

Bus attacked with stones by Rhiannan Bell A bus operated by Surbus serving the PuchePescadería route in Almeria was attacked with a volley of stones shattering a side window. The incident took place at the Plaza Moscú stop in Pescadería. The bus was carrying passengers but luckily no-one was injured.

xxx

However, the City of Almeria and the bus service management have agreed to the temporary suspension of the service, Line 6, passing through Pescadería leaving some of its dependant residents without transport. The response may seem harsh to members of the public but this is not the first time that the bus service through Pescadería has been affected by such vandalism. At the beginning of the year there was also

a spate of stone throwing, by children in the neighborhood, and the route was in fact altered due to the danger posed to the driver and passengers. The situation was the subject of many council debates which resulted in the service being withdrawn from certain parts of the town for a few weeks but in March resumed its regular route. Last week’s attacks mean the bus route will end at the San Roque Church.

MORE THAN 23,000 hectares of cultivated land in the Almerían Levante could run out of water by the end of this year, say the farmers, organised as the central syndicate of consumers of the Tagus-Segura water system. The worry is that the current drought is drying out the two reserves traditionally used to keep the fields watered – water channelled from the Tagus, the quota has fallen to 2.5 cubic hectometres this year, and the Guadalquivir Rivers. The alternative sources for water locally, the desalination plant in the Bajo Almanzora, is currently out of use - and embroiled in the ‘Acuamed scandal’ - and the other Carboneras plant is stretched to its limit.

La Manga Beaches Disappearing by Rhiannan Bell A study has shown that the beaches of La Manga could recede by up to 5 metres by the year 2050. The forecasts are based on the estimate that by mid-century, if progression continues, there will be a global rise in sea level of 15cm says the Environmental Institute of Cantabria. The rise in sea level caused by climate change would mainly affect inland areas of La Manga with an estimated 4-5 metres of beach possibly becoming submerged. The study draws on marine dynamics, such as waves, weather and tide, and was mainly focused on the area between the Port of San Pedro and Cabo de Palos. The research highlighted that La Manga´s beaches have suffered significant local changes in recent decades due to the construction of transversal dikes, breakwaters, roads, jetties and port constructions Human action has disrupted the dynamic equilibrium that had originally existed between the Mar Menor and Mar Mayor and as a result, the interior beaches of La Manga have been those that have suffered the most. In addition, the beaches, dunes and cliffs continue to erode with increasing sea levels. And the warming of coastal waters continue resulting in negative consequences for coastal ecosystems. This warming and associated acidification in the waters can lead to bleaching of sensitive coral, which is already vulnerable due to its inability to adapt to large degrees of change in marine ecosystems, reducing its capacity to generate and ultimately can lead to death.

Dog Rescued from heat The Guardia Civil had to work hard to save a dog that was suffering inside a car parked in a residential area of Alicante. by Rhiannan Bell Police authorities received an anonymous call alerting them to a possible illegal occupation of a property in VinalopĂł. However, when the agents arrived at the address, they discovered a dog in a vehicle showing signs of weakness. Telephone calls made by the police to the owner of the vehicle remained unanswered and so the officers resorted to contacting her using the public address system

installed on their patrol car, again, without success. The morning was beginning to warm up rapidly and the vehicle, being in direct sunlight was putting the already anxious animal in more danger and finallu, the police decided to break one of the car windows and retrieve the canine. After the rescue officers determined that the dog was a Pitbull and was not micro-chipped so it was taken to the SPCA (Sociedad Protectora de Animales) while police continued looking for the Bulgarian owner, 29, for the animal abuse.

The 2016 summer operation established by the Ministry of State Security – aims to provide a safer environment for foreign tourists – and means the Guardia Civil in the town are being supported by the French National Gendarmerie. The French officers are working under the European Police Exchange Programme, which allows training police to travel to other countries and gain practical experience of how other nations operate. The Alicante region has seen additional police being employed for the summer months and more SATE offices opened to offer all visiting nationalities a greater sense of security in what is a very busy period.

Thief arrested The Guardia Civil in Torre Pacheco, Murcia has arrested a man for numerous thefts from vehicles in an operation dubbed ‘Doblarcos’. by Rhiannan Bell The suspect, a Moroccan national aged 36, is thought to be responsible for at least fifteen vehicle offenses over the past few months, and was eventually caught after officers from the Guardia Civil were alerted by concerned residents. After investigating further, officers noted a pattern in the location and the use of the same tool tbeing used to break into the cars. Patrolling the area regularly on the lookout for the perpetrator, officers spotted a man next to a vehicle, acting suspiciously, who fled the scene when he saw them but was arreested nearby. The man’s backpack was serached and found to contain items from the vehicle and a large screwdriver that he had been using to literally rip open vehicle doors. After being officially identified it was also discovered that the man in question had, in fact, a long history of arrests and is thought to have committed more than 100 crimes

Calling all volunteers

Summer is always a difficult time for charities as many volunteers leave Spain and return when the weather cools down. APAH is no exception. During these months we struggle to care for the dogs because of a serious shortage of helpers. Reluctantly we have to make the decision to turn away animals at this time of year which isn’t due to lack of funds or space but shortage of people who are available to give their time to help. We are appealing to the public for volunteers, anyone that can give a couple of hours of their free time either in the morning or the evening to help out this great cause and allow us to continue to accept homeless Dogs and Cats throughout the summer months. It would make a huge difference to the animals, the charity and the few people who are left trying to cope. Anyone who wishes to become a volunteer can contact APAH on 630 422 563, 616 210 850 or 966 766 555 (Charity Shop in Pilar 10.00 - 13.30 Mon - Fri)

Italian train collision tragedy by Caroline Tyszka TWO TRAINS collided in southern Italy on Tuesday morning killing at least twenty-seven people and injuring a further fifty. The passenger trains collided head on in the rural area of Puglia, 15 kilometres from the Adriatic Sea and 7 kilometres east of Andria. Both the trains were travelling on the same track heading towards each other at around 100 kilometres an hour when the tragedy struck with images of the twisted and smashed remains being televised worldwide. Matteo Renzi, the Italian Prime Minister, has promised a full inquiry to find out who was responsible. He met with officials in the region Tuesday afternoon and pledged support saying, “my thoughts go to the families of the victims and we are together in this pain and despair.” Both trains were operated by Ferrotramviaria SpA who issued a statement saying that “the employees of the Italian FS Group are close to the victims’ families, the wounded and colleagues of Ferrotramviaria.” Prosecutors have opened an investigation, though no one has been charged with a crime yet, it is thought more than likely to have been caused by human error.

Dealing with jellyfish stings by Caroline Tyszka IT’S THAT time of the year when many local beaches receive the unwelcome visitors that are jellyfish – medusas in Spanish. Although they are not normally dangerous a sting from one of these slippery marine animals can make for a very uncomfortable holiday. Using a stinging tentacle liquid the fluid can cause its unfortunate victim to suffer localised pain, redness, swelling, itching and burning, tingling and sometime a more severe reaction that requires hospitalisation. Anyone stung should immediately soak the area with sea water, or, ideally saline. Never use fresh water as this can react with the stinging cells. Avoid rubbing or scratching the area and if possible apply a bag of ice or cold compress to the sting for fifteen minutes. Sometimes a tentacle can hook onto the skin and can be helped by applying vinegar to the area before using tweezers or protective gloves to remove it. Antihistamine gel can help reduce the inflammation and itching with the pain expected to subside with an hour. Should the victim still be suffering discomfort it is important to get them to a medical centre in case they are having an allergic reaction. With any jelly fish sting it is always advisable to find a lifeguard to receive the appropriate treatment.

Earthquake fears

Experts believe an earthquake will take place between Bangladesh and eastern India putting 140 million lives at risk. The giant earthquake warning comes from a new study where geophysicists say that they know a huge tremor will occur but are unable to say when it will happen, although it is not imminent. The risk area measures 24,000 square miles with 140 million people living within 62 miles of the predicted epicentre, the study says. Published in the Nature Geoscience journal one of the study’s authors, Michael Steckler a geophysicist at Columbia University in New York, details how heavy industries, power plants and natural gas sites in Bangladesh would inevitably be destroyed. The danger zone lies along the same fault lines in the earth’s crust where the 2004 Boxing Day earthquake and tsunami in the Indian Ocean killed some 230,000 people. Computer models were used to analyse ten years of data which showed that the plates under Bangladesh and eastern India have been moving and caused the concerning instability. India has had approximately 135 earthquakes in the last year including a 4.4 magnitude tremor in Manipur this week.

Spice up your life GIRL POWER is back as the Spice Girls decide a reunion is what the world really really wants. Three original members of the band – Emma Bunton, Geri Horner and Melanie Brown – posted a video hinting at a possible comeback tour as they thanked fans for their support on the 20th anniversary of their debut hit ‘Wannabe’. And there are reports there will be a concert in London’s Hyde Park next summer featuring Baby, Ginger, and Scary. The girls appeared in a video suggesting they ‘wannabe’ in action again and music producer Eliot Kennedy, who frequently worked with the band in the past, told ITV’s ‘Good Morning Britain’ the trio had been working on new material together. “We have been in the studio, with just the three of them, Mel B and Geri and Emma, and we had a fantastic couple of days,” he said. “We wrote a brilliant song and the energy was exactly like it was 20 years ago, just as enthusiastic, just as much to say, just as much to celebrate. “I think they have something to do with the way female artists are perceived in the pop charts nowadays, I think they’ve had a massive effect on pop music and pop culture, so it’s a good time to celebrate.” In the video, Geri says: “You’ve stood by us for 20 years and we want to say a big thank you.” Mel B added: “And we want to celebrate and have a party. And when we do, you’re all invited.” The video also suggests news about the Spice Girl’s exact plans will be announced in the coming weeks.

legal&finance Certificates and reports on Spanish law. Application of Spanish law in Successions outside of Spain by

Carlos Baos

Our offices frequently receive, usually come from other law firms located outside of Spain, a request to provide certificates or report on Spanish law, existing court precedents concerning a particular matter, or our views of how a dispute should be resolved under Spain’s rules etc. , normally this is known as an affidavit. It should be noted that not all certificates or law reports are the same, as sometimes it would depend upon the country where they need to be used, or the formalities requested, whether it should be apostilled or not, etc. Normally the law certificates to be used in foreign countries that we perform are drafted and signed by a registered lawyer of our law firm. Depending on for what it needs to be used, or the formalities required by the authority, we sometimes make a statement before a Spanish notary who acknowledges the veracity of the content, and the validity of the regulations mentioned within. We are mainly asked to prepare reports on inheritance, wills and successions under Spanish law, for example: . -Formalities of Spanish Wills. .-Who must inherit according to Spanish law when there is no will (intestacy rules) ?. .-What is the applicable law to the succession of a particular person in Spain, depending on their national-

ity, habitual residence / domicile, date of death ?. To give an example, we recently made a certificate of law to be used in the United States. It appears that in the system of that country, as happens in many other countries in an inheritance process, the original will with the signature of the testator or testatrix must be reviewed by the judge or competent authority. In this specific case the Will in question was a Spanish Will. Our report and certificate confirmed that under Spanish notarial and regulation law, the original Will signed notarized by the testator or testatrix cannot leave or be removed from the notary protocol or deposit, where it must remain always, and all deeds and Wills are signed before the notary. Therefore, to process an inheritance based on a Will granted before a Spanish notary, the notary would issue what we call a literal copy, ie a new document that transcribes the full text of the original will, which certifies that the text is the exact part of the original Will or matrix. This copy is not a photocopy, therefore, in this literal copy the signature of the testator or testatrix does not appear. So if you, your lawyer or your clients, need a certification, report, affidavit or opinion of the Spanish legislation, court precedents, case law on a particular matter, our firm can help. Contact us and we will help you.

How the crash in gilt yields could affect you! First of all, you may be asking, “what are gilt yields”? Gilt yields are used to determine the level of pension payment in the UK and also underpin most pensions and annuities. They are government bonds and the returns on them have crashed since the Brexit. The yield, or interest rate, on money invested in benchmark 10-year UK Government bonds has tumbled from 1.37 per cent just before the EU referendum result on Thursday to stand at around 0.95 per cent on the day of writing. To put that in perspective, the yield was 5.45 per cent in June 2007, just before the financial crisis struck that summer. It’s a glaring indicator that investors think a recession might be looming, and the global economic outlook is poor. In the meantime, plunging gilt yields will make it harder for pension providers and schemes, which rely heavily on this ‘safe’ stream of income, to afford to fund decent retirement pay-outs for ordinary savers. Falling gilt yields have swiftly sparked cuts to the already pitiful rates which retirees are offered to exchange a pension pot for an annuity, a type of insurance product that pays out an income until you die. Pension experts predict plummeting gilt yields will contribute to widening final salary pension deficits. This will put further pressure on the funding levels of these traditionally safe and generous schemes, and potentially force more to ask for bailouts from the Pension Protection Fund. Pension freedom reforms launched in April 2015 mean retirees who saved into a ‘defined contribution’ rather than a final salary pension can invest their savings how they like rather than buying an annuity. Many more savers are now entering income drawdown schemes, which allow you to take sums out of your pension pot while the rest remains invested. A lot depends on what you are invested in and how well it performs. If you are affected by all this uncertainty, you should come and speak to me. Exiting the eu, can still mean economic stability for british property owners in spain!! The United Kingdom’s decision to leave the European Union has raised important questions in regards to how it will affect British buyers of property in Spain or current Spanish property owners. Many of our Wincham Clients have been asking about the implications of the United Kingdom leaving the European Union, and how this may affect their ownership of properties in Spain - either privately or within a UK Limited Company structure. Here at Wincham, we are monitoring the situation very closely, and take this opportunity to assure you that we are, and will continue to be at the forefront of events as they develop. We will be poised to anticipate and to deal with any changes that may occur over the coming months and years; ready to apprise any impact such changes could have on the structure of assets that are held in Spain. We will communicate updates to you, as and when developments occur via our website www.wincham.com Between our UK and Spanish Offices, Wincham manages

over 500 UK Limited Companies owning property in many regions throughout Spain and our clients’ continue to use Wincham, confident in the knowledge that their Legal and Financial affairs are well taken care of. It should be remembered that Trade Treaties have operated between the United Kingdom and Spain for many years and have existed long before the United Kingdom entry into the EU in 1973. Accordingly, and certainly for the foreseeable future, no notable changes are expected in the way the UK and Spain interact commercially. Following the implementation of “Article 50” the treaties currently existing will remain in place for at least a further two years until any future agreements are negotiated. On the UK’s ultimate exit from the European Union, commercial trade treaties will continue to operate from a non-

offshore position. Spain maintains trade treaties with many countries – whether or not they are within the EU- such as Australia, China, and Uruguay, for example. Further, the UK is only one of many countries that maintain off-shore exceptions with Spain. If you do have any questions in relation to the United Kingdom leaving the European Union, then please feel free to contact us on info@wincham.com and we will try to address any concerns that you may have.

RAFA takes off MEMBERS OF the North Costa Blanca Branch of the Royal Air Force Association enjoyed their annual ‘Flying Day’ at the Muchamiel airfield, near Alicante. by Jack Troughton The flying club’s chief instructor Carlos Fabra took members into the air in a Cessna for an aerial tour of the city and the surrounding area – branch Chairman Wing Commander Bob Hunt MBE and Teulada Councillor Laura Hillstead enjoying the final flight of the day. There was also a tour of the helicopter maintenance facilities run by INAER; responsible for keeping vital coastguard and fire-fighting aircraft in the skies – the group witnessed a ‘scramble’ as helicopters and their crews were called to an inland blaze. The “excellent” day was said to be a mixture of “excitement and relaxation” and branch pennants were presented to Carlos and INAER, which has its largest facility in Europe at the busy Muchamiel airfield. Pictured are RAFA members with one of the helicopters and Bob Hunt with flying instructor Carlos. Watch out for and search out july wasps

July is the month when wasps can become a serious nuisance giving painful stings as well as needing to be netted from the surface of swimming pools and open Jacuzzis daily. In the UK the nests were mostly large and inside the eves of roofs but here in Spain they seem to mostly small and made in the strengthening boxes on the underside of plastic tables, chairs and sunbeds. So do check out any such garden furniture you have and watch out for flying wasps before choosing a table on a restaurant terrace especially near swimming pools. Just last night I decided to move the computer out of the study onto the small terrace outside for a motivating view of mountains and the promising sunset while typing this article. The second tap on the computer key board caused a sufficient vibration through the plastic table top to disturb eight wasps in a small nest which shot out angrily round my bare legs stinging both knees in the process. Only thing was to rush into the study and close the door and go down to the kitchen to cut a small onion in half and rub both bites on the knees before they swelled and then rub carbonate of soda into the juices. Fortunately with speedy action and thin flesh on the knees little swelling and pain occurred and the white poisonous circle had gone this morning. Once it was almost dark I ventured onto the terrace and carefully moved the computer indoors before gingerly turning over the table with one hand with an anti-wasp spray in the other. Sure enough there was a small nest in a strengthening cell and anti-wasp liquid was immediately spared for a couple of minutes into the small entrance hole of the nest. Fortunately no dozing wasps flew out and the nest could be knocked into a plastic bag this morning to go into a waste sack. Now this evening, once any wasps will have gone into nests for the night, the several plastic tables and groups of chairs around house terraces and the garden will be investigated as there may well be young nests from which adult wasps have yet flown. But first I need to by a new spray bottle as sods law there was just enough left last night to make the upper terrace table safe. Hopefully I can buy an eco-spray such as the now empty Neudorff tin. They have never been our house but the tin indicates that the spray is also effective on cockroaches which can be a summer nuisance after thunderstorms when they search for somewhere dry. While shopping I need to look out for a replacement eco-spray for summer flies under the covered terrace on which I often lunch. Fortunately a bunch of leafed lantana branches hung on the kitchen door deter flies and midges from entering. With the house surrounded by lantanas at the suggestion of the Spanish builder twenty five years ago we have not been bothered with mosquitoes or required to install mossie-screens on windows. Best of luck for a bite less summer and autumn.

Windows update

Dear Aunty Virus, About a month ago it dawned on me that I had not received notification of any windows updates for an unusually long period,

Defender anti virus Hi Aunty I am on Windows 10 and did have Defender anti virus which I gather is an automatic anti virus. I did see it in my programs but it has disappeared. Please advise. I do have Malware which I use to scan Many thanks, Ray Reply: To locate Defender in W10, simply type the word “defender into the W10 search bar, and it should locate the Windows Defender Desktop App as the best match. Click on that to open Defender. Or by selecting the Start Start icon button, then selecting Settings > Update & security > Windows Defender.

On entering the Windows Update via Control Panel I found that there were 129 updates/818.4 MB awaiting download. I initiated download procedure, and all indications were that update was proceeding normally. After about 4 hours the status showed no downloads/0.0 MB completed. I have on several occasions since then tried the same process, each occasion showing 129 updates/818.4 MB awaiting and, upon initiating, all downloading proceeding normally. So far, after an aggregate of some 20 hours, I have still achieved absolutely nothing. Andy. Reply: Method 1: Run the fix it and check. http://support.microsoft.com/mats/windows_update/ Method 2: You may download & install the updates manually from the Microsoft Download Center. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/default.aspx Response: Your suggestions concerning Windows update did not, in themselves, solve the problem, but your method 1 gave me a specific error to investigate (error 0x80070057). In delving into solutions for this error I found a solution on a Windows user forum.

WITH A background in family and matrimonial mediation, Life Coach Sara Bell helps Readers with their daily worries. If you are having difficulties with relationships, family, work or any other aspect of your life, then help is at hand.

I am so awkward I get very nervous around girls. It has only really come on in my teens. When I feel like this, I need something to do with my hands because I get fidgety. I have no ideas what do to. It’s affecting my social life as I am now tending to back out of things like going out in a group, unless I know the people well.

It could well be a lack of self confidence. As a long term project, and to focus the mind, try learning a musical instrument. Learning to play drums or may be guitar in particular would be good for coordination. And also it’s something cool, that the girls (and boys) would be impressed by. As for dealing with social situations, when you meet girls for the first time, and get anxious, have you thought about doing magic tricks? Keep a couple of tricks in your pocket, one which the other person participates in, and you’ll never be without something to do with your hands. This is a great way of breaking the ice too.

Jealousy

At a family get-together recently, my sister made an out of the blue comment, about how I had a nose like the men in our family. I haven’t always seen eye to eye with my sister, but as adults I thought her snide comments were in the past. I was very upset, but didn‘t let her know it. I told my husband what she’d said, and he said that he thought my sister was jealous. But I am always pleasant whenever I see her, and I don’t behave that way towards her. Your husband could be right, your sister may be jealous of you. Feelings of jealousy and inadequacy can stretch back a long way, and if she displayed this kind of behaviour when you were both young, then perhaps she still feels the same at times. There’s not a lot you can do about these things when you are older. As an adult she should try and deal with her feelings, and keep them under wraps. Something you might want to tell her one day if she persists.

Kenny Corris kennycorris@hotmail.com 686 361 594

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// The creative power of the Sun aligns with Mars this week. You are known to be enterprising and appear to be unafraid in taking direct action. Your strong character and fearless energies bode well, but watch your patience because you can be impulsive and rash. Whatever you do do right now, above all think of the consequences for all concerned.

Signs are in place that this is the start of a very stable and productive period for you. On the work front is enterprise and challenge, which you enjoy; and there are plans afoot that will supplement your current emotional need for stability and permanency. Venus trines Saturn and you can take things in your stride, so weigh up the pros and cons

Ceres enters midweek and brings timbre and rhythm to a situation that looks to be veering way out of control. You can be too cautious sometimes, but this week it is your stubborn disposition that isn’t helping you and making things more difficult than they need to be. Look at things from a different angle and things will get much better.

A highly emotional phase sees you taking on a project that just may be something worth getting your teeth into. You are able to shed a little light, however, on something that isn’t quite right, but you know that you can help to make a difference into the bargain, come what may, whatever it takes or wherever it may actually lead you!

Venus enters into Saturn bringing you freedom to take much needed love into your heart. Recent moods have seen you be very analytical and have found you taking a step back as you are afraid to face something head on. Love enters through actions with Venus and Neptune, exalted in Cancer, things are about to change for the best of reasons.

You can be so mean in regard to yourself when your generosity of spirit can be so very highly charged. This week brings you a focus on forward planning; allowing you to be both responsible and realistic into the bargain. Abandon that which holds you back, and throw all caution to the wind; you are about to do your very best work and you know it!

Do not underestimate yourself, and believe in your own self worth, because this will put you in a far better place right now. You are versatile and ready and willing to embrace the changes that you know are coming; but you do have to look within to find the balance that you need right now. Your inspiring energies can and will inspire others to follow suit.

Somebody has let you down, and you are angry that you didn’t see it coming this time around. Uranus influences the Sun this week as things have to get a little worse before they start to get better. It is your bruised ego that is hurting the most, but you are about to step into a phase whereby your working life takes a precedent over anything else. Mercury conjuncts Venus and does its very best to remove some of that stubborn inhibition you are carrying around for no reason whatsoever. Your channels of communication are open and ready, but you lack the real impetus to make the subtle changes that you need to right now. Open your heart and you will see what could be yours.

Time will tell if all your good work, as of late, has been in vain. There is only so much that you can do, and you seem to have exhausted every possibility in the process. Neptune’s influences this week are hard to define, but a midweek action with Mercury helps to keep a steady influence, allowing you to have some well deserved peace.

All is fair in love and war, and somebody has to be let down fairly and squarely this week, since things have gone too far now. Those who have the benefit of your loving care know that you are highly tuned and dedicated and that you do not do anything by halves. However you need to focus on recent events and ask why they were allowed to happen? Whilst Neptune takes on Mercury it is clear to see that your very best interests are taken care of this week, and certainly not before time. A corner develops that brings you back to basics, and restores practicality to your actions; and imagination into your highly charged psychic centres. The result is a delicate but inspiring fusion of all you seek.

Kenny, I feel that I have failed because there are so many people who have a stronger connection to Spirit than I have. My faith comes and goes, and when I don’t get the answers that I need I find it hard to believe. Amy J. Amy, you have to have faith in whatever you believe in. Spirit does not judge but they do honour faith and trust. If you do not believe in Spirit, and you do not have to, then go and believe in something else...but believe, because it is the essence of what we are all about as human beings. Faith is rewarding. We may not get the answers that we always want, but we cannot pick and choose especially when fate and destiny are the drive and are both beyond our conscious control. Find your way in and you will truly not want to make an exit if it is right for you stay. I wish you well in whatever you do, but remember Spirit love you for being just you and all that this implies!

If It’s Your Birthday This Week

Be reassured that others do have the very best of intentions and that they offer their support to you because you need a helping hand. Whatever you do look for the loophole that will help you to move to new and exciting levels.. Because it’s time!

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// In days of yore when two girls had a disagreement, it was about everyone gathering in the playground and enjoying all the pushing and shoving and name calling, and the occasional bit of hair pulling that went on, nowadays of course it gets measured in how many followers you have on Twitter. The feud between Katy Perry and Taylor Swift, that began nearly two years ago, had a serious measure of spice added to the proceedings when it was announced, by Twitter themselves, that Katy Perry is now the official No 1 with a staggering 90 million followers, with Taylor languishing down in third with a mere 79 million. Katy also stole a march on T-Swizz by marketing her own perfume ´Mad Love, ´ which is a line from one of Taylor´s songs! FIGHT!!! This next item is a tad unsavoury, so if you are of a nervous disposition I suggest you read this through rose-tinted glasses. Christie Brinkley lives on a beachfront property in the Hamptons on New York’s Long Island, and last week she caught sight of a lady about to pee outside her house! “What are you doing?! You can’t pee in front of my house! You have to go away! You’re standing on my rocks! You can’t pee on my rocks! I walk there!” said Christie, “These are not your rocks, this is not your beach, you don’t own it!” called out the lady, Erica Remkus. Christie then turned on her hose, blasting Erica from 30 feet away. Erica later said “I threw my glow stick necklaces at her… and then I peed!” Well that’s a relief!

Mid 90´s time-travelling sitcom Good night Sweetheart starring Nicholas Lyndhurst (Rodney from Only Fools...) is to be part of a season to mark the 60 the anniversary of when Hancock´s Half Hour was first broadcast. The season will also include new episodes of Are You Being Served? Steptoe and Son! Till Death Us Do Part! Porridge! Keeping Up Appearances and Up Pompeii! … Spectacular stuff!! Goodnight Sweetheart was first broadcast on BBC One on 18 November 1993, with Lyndhurst playing the part of a time-travelling TV repairman who has a second life in 1940s London. BBC Comedy Commissioning controller Shane Allen said the whole season is “geared towards giving comedy royalty their due recognition. “ Arise Sir Shane!

The ´Blondie´ story, but it’s far from done yet! Debbie Harry met Chris Stein in a New York bar in 1973 when she was 28, she, a struggling singer, and he, an art student. Chris played guitar, and new member by new member the group Blondie started to take shape, and Harry and Stein became lovers as well as bandmates. It took 3 more years to get their first album ´Blondie´ out, then another two before releasing ´Parallel Lines´ which established them as a top new wave / punk band. They made their sixth album ´The Hunter´ in 1982, then the following year Chris was diagnosed with life threatening pemphigus vulgaris, a rare autoimmune disease of the skin. The band came off the road and Debbie spent the next four years helping nurse Stein back to full health. In 1999 ´Blondie´ released their ninth album ´No Exit´ and remarkably the single ´Maria´ from the album reached No1 when Debbie was 54 years old. With Chris back in good health, in the mid-nineties their romance fizzled out but they remained close friends and musical partners, with Debbie saying at the time “To be honest, I can’t stand him, but we get on with it, we approach everything differently, so it is a constant surprise to me that we work so well together,” strange but true folks. “We’re actually very sympatico,” said Debbie “we’re not like brother and sister though, our relationship has always been creative, we’ve had our disagreements, but there’s never been any ego clashes!” Stein came in on this subject saying “Debbie and I will never get away from it, we must have known each other in a previous life,” then back to Debbie who added “we actually explored that once with a spiritualist, so I wouldn’t’ rule it out!” Blondie are in the middle of a short tour of the UK which started at ´T in The Park´ last Sunday, before they head back to the US to promote their 2014 Album ´Ghosts of Download.´ On this Debbie said “my solo career was evolving, but Chris convinced me a reunion would be a good thing, so I capitulated, and it’s worked … my solo album will never have the same identity as a Blondie one!” It’s one thing for Chris Stein to contract a rare life threatening illness, but for his partner to dedicate all of her time to his recovery makes Deborah Ann Harry from Miami Florida just as rare … if not rarer. God Bless you Debbie.

Actress Margot Robbie and her co-star Alexander Skarsgard talked to Australia’s TV Week last week about their new movie ´The Legend of Tarzan,´ and Margot explained why when she played Jane she was not super slim. “It’s the 19th century in the film so she’s got a bit of weight on her; anyway I’m not going to look thin just for the sake of it!” a spirited young lady for sure. Then the Queensland, Australia born Margot got down to perhaps the real reason she wasn´t too keen on going for the stick insect look when she said “the London’s pub scene has a lot to offer that someone on a strict diet would not be able to enjoy, it was my first time living in London properly and I wanted to try every pub!” Me Tarzan! You Fat!

Poppy Waterman-Smith was out busking last weekend in Piccadilly Gardens Manchester when who should walk along but singer songwriter Seal. He not only joined Poppy in a duet of his song ´Kiss From a Rose´ but invited her to open his show that evening in front of 2000 people including her mum. Seal told the crowd: “I was on a walkabout today and heard the dulcet tones of this beautiful lady. She was busking down town so I’m bringing her to you from the streets of your very own Manchester!” Poppy told the Manchester Evening News: “He is one of my parents’ favourite so for me to support him with my mum watching was absolutely incredible!” Check out this iPhone video. Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Our typical errors

I seem to be in the correcting frame of mind at the moment, so whilst the mood is still upon me, I think I’ll go through some typical mistakes that English speakers make in their Spanish. Some of them are rather elementary errors, but even so, I sometimes hear them on the lips of more advanced students, so I think a bit of knuckle rapping is called for. My first target comes right at the point when we are introducing ourselves to someone. Far too many people say: “Me llamo es ….” I know you know it’s wrong, but you still say it! When we say this we are unconsciously (and incorrectly) translating “My name is …” on the basis that the number and length of the words sort of fit, so it sounds right. However, the correct form is “Me llamo ….” in other words there is one word less in the Spanish version. “Me llamo” means “I am called”, so if I say “me llamo es Jane” I am saying “I am called is Jane”. I think you’ve probably got the point on that one, so let’s move on. My next target is the way people confuse “vale” “bueno” and “bien”. “Vale” stands on its own. It is in fact a form of the verb “valer”, so when we say it we are sort of saying “it’s valid” in other words “it’s okay”. Sometimes I hear people say incorrectly “es vale”. When they do this they are putting two verbs together, something like “it is, it’s valid”. That’s sounds totally stupid, and “es vale” doesn’t sound any better in Spanish. “Vale” expresses agreement with another person, but if we just want to state that something is alright, we should say “está bien” (it’s fine, or it’s okay). Notice that the verb used is “estar”. We say “está bien” and NOT “es bien” NOR “es bueno”. “Es bien” just doesn’t happen EVER, and “es bueno” or “es buena” means that something is essentially good, as in a good person, a good child, a good film or a good cook. So, to recap, when we want to say that something is fine, we must say ….. “ESTÁ BIEN”. Repeat a hundred times. The other day I was listening to some students engaged in a conversation activity, and for one reason or another I heard them say “lo siento” to each other at least a dozen times. Now, when one wishes to apologize, “lo siento” is not exactly incorrect, but it is frequently used wrongly by us Brits. The literal translation of “lo siento” is “I feel it”, and should be reserved for situations which require expressions of regret (when you know you have upset or otherwise harmed another person) or sorrow (when sympathizing with someone else’s unhappiness). It should not be used for the kinds of minor misunderstandings which crop up in everyday life. For these things we should either not say anything at all because it wasn’t our fault, or we should simply say “perdón”. Another very common error of a more grammatical nature, is missing out the word “de” when using prepositions. For example, if I want to say “I live in San Miguel, near Torrevieja”, I should say “Vivo en San Miguel, cerca DE Torrevieja”. Many English speakers miss the “de” out because they are mentally translating “near Torrevieja”. Most words like “cerca” which are called prepositions, require “de” after them – “cerca de”, “lejos de”,” enfrente de”,”al lado de” and so on. I have some other things to nag about, but if you manage to get these few things right, you will be making a Spanish teacher very happy.

Marley, mower, mutt & me by

Chris Ashley

Writer & Broadcaster

WELL HERE i am, still a self- unemployed Radio Gob On A Stick. However I did have a fill in job as a gardener at a huge villa up towards Valencia. The driveway was so long – half way up there was a Little Chef – we don’t go that far on our holidays. Another unusual thing, for sun baked Spain, was a very large bucolic lawn which I had to cut with a titchy push/pull 20 year old mower. I inhaled more grass in 2 days than Bob Marley did in his entire lifetime. Mind you I was ably assisted by the owners hound dog, got rather fond of the mutt. We shared a Bonio or two & the al fresco comfort break amenities. So here I am with nothing to do but scribble for you faithful reader & browse eBay all day. Bought a stair lift - which is a bit odd since we live in a ground floor apartment- so I’ve rigged it to run from the bed via the loo to the fridge and back. Rather churlishly, to my mind, the Current & Final Mrs Ashley is not best pleased with my scoffing & quaffing at 3am in our Marital bed – she sniffed “More Victoria’s Sponge than Secret.” Last weekend the phone rang and I’m thinking this could be Radio 2 calling to say “We want you to take over from Chris Evans as frankly he’s unravelling faster than a politicians promise.” It was, in fact, an old chum from Australia – Claude who wants to visit Spain (I know it should be Bruce – but Claude it is). He had 3 questions to aid him to acclimatise- number 1. (at least imagine Claude has a Crocodile Dundee drawl) “Do the Spanish drive on the right or left hand side of the road?” Answer; Yes. Question 2 “What’s the beer like?” Cold and weak as a Julian Clary handshake. Question 3. “Are the Sheilas approachable?” Yes, but for sure-fire success approach them in a roundabout way. It was at this point necessary to explain that young ladies who appear to mysteriously have had their clothing stolen - were not on the roundabouts conducting a traffic census. Pop quiz, hot shot. Mentioned Bob Marley’s recreational pursuits – a fellow Jamaican in 1974 recorded a song that has since sold over 10 million copies (#1 Worldwide). It started life as a ‘B’ side & took a mere 10 minutes to record & it was about a trendy activity of the time. Name That Tune – no prize just my undying admiration – last weeks answer was Garuda Airlines – email; ashleybobble@hotmail.com

Spicy Sweet Potato and Green Rice Burrito Bowls

Healthy burrito bowls made with roasted sweet potato, green rice and black beans! This delicious, vegan dinner reheats well for lunch. Recipe yields 4 servings. INGREDIENTS Green rice 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1½ cups long grain brown rice 3 cups vegetable broth 1½ cup baby spinach, lightly packed ½ cup cilantro (mostly leaves, stems are ok), lightly packed 1 jalapeño or serrano pepper, seeded, membranes removed and roughly chopped 1 medium shallot, peeled and roughly chopped 1 garlic clove, peeled, roughly chopped ¼ teaspoon salt, more to taste Sweet potatoes 2 pounds sweet potatoes (3 to 4 medium sweet potatoes), peeled and sliced into 1-inch chunks 2 tablespoons olive oil ½ teaspoon smoked paprika ¼ teaspoon sea salt Seasoned black beans 2 cans (14 ounces each) black beans or 3 cups cooked black beans, with their cooking liquid 2 teaspoons ground cumin ½ teaspoon chili powder 1 teaspoon sherry vinegar or lime juice Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper, to

taste Additional garnishes ¼ cup pepitas (green pumpkin seeds) ¼ teaspoon olive oil 1 avocado, pitted and sliced Jarred mild salsa verde Chopped cilantro Crumbled feta (optional, not vegan) INSTRUCTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit. Line one large, rimmed baking sheet and one smaller sheet with parchment paper. Place the spinach, cilantro, jalapeño, shallot, garlic, salt and ½ cup of the vegetable broth in a food processor or blender. Blend until smooth. 2. Heat the oil in a heavy-bottomed pot over medium heat until shimmering. Add the rice and stir to coat. Spread the rice in an even layer on the bottom of the pot and let the rice lightly brown. This happens quickly! When the rice starts to brown, stir it and spread it out in an even layer again so that more of the rice browns. 3. When most of the rice has lightly browned, scrape the green purée into the rice. Stir until the rice is evenly coated with green purée and continue to cook, stirring constantly, for a minute. Add the rest of the vegetable broth to the

pot. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to a low simmer and cover the pot. Cook the rice on a very low simmer until tender, 35 to 40 minutes. 4. While the rice cooks, toss the sweet potatoes in the olive oil, smoked paprika and salt until the sweet potatoes are evenly coated in oil. Arrange in a single layer on your prepared baking sheet. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, tossing halfway, until the sweet potatoes are tender and caramelizing at the edges. 5. Meanwhile, transfer the beans and their cooking liquid (don’t drain the beans) to a medium pot. Stir in the cumin and chili powder and warm over medium heat. Once the beans are simmering, cover the beans and reduce heat to maintain a very gentle simmer until you’re ready to serve. 6. Once the rice is done cooking, remove the pot from heat. Uncover the pot and place a clean terry towel or dish towel over the pot, then recover. The towel will help absorb excess liquid as the rice continues to cook in its own steam. (If you don’t have a clean towel, you can skip this step, just cover normally.) Let sit for 10 minutes. 7. Once the sweet potatoes are done cooking, toss the pepitas with ¼ teaspoon olive oil and a sprinkle of salt on the small baking sheet. Toast the seeds in the oven for 4 to 5 minutes, until they’re turning lightly golden and making little popping noises. Set aside to cool.

8. Fluff the rice with a fork and season with salt if necessary. Remove beans from heat, stir in the vinegar and season to taste with salt and pepper. 9. Assemble your bowls: First add green rice, then use a slotted spoon or fork to transfer beans to the bowls. Top with sweet potatoes and add a few slices of avocado to each bowl. Sprinkle with toasted pepitas and cilantro and optional feta. Serve with salsa verde on the side.

Chiropractic and Chronic Pain

Dr. Dutey-Harispe D.C graduated from the Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa, USA and has over 40 years experience as a chiropractor, acupuncturist and homeopath. Most patients attending the Algorfa Chiropractic Clinic, come as a result of chronic pain affecting different parts of the body; back, neck, shoulders, hips, knees etc… Pain is a useful crisis messaging system for the body. It is a message that something is wrong, at a volume that cannot be easily ignored. It exists to protect the body, encouraging protective action to prevent further injury. The network that carries these messages is the nervous system, from the peripheral nerves to the spine, and then to the brain. Chronic pain can arise from many sources. Common sources include injuries that do not completely heal, long-term disease processes and injuries to the nervous system. While we may ask why pain is necessary, there are documented cases of people dying of organ failure, a burst appendix and massive internal infections, all because they did not feel pain and thus did not seek treatment in time. Though unpleasant, pain is quite useful most of the time as it is an important warning signal. Hence why it is important to understand from the patients where the “root” cause of the problem is coming from. At the Algorfa Chiropractic Clinic, on your first visit an orthopaedic examination is performed, this will give an important indication of how the body is performing and help establish the “root” cause of the problem. The Role of Chiropractic Traditional Chiropractic brings a unique perspective to both the perception and cause of pain. While organ dysfunction or physical injury may be the original cause of pain, nothing

in the body happens without involvement of the spine. Nerve impulses blocked or impeded at the spinal roots due to misalignments will lead to chronic pain and dysfunction along the nerve pathways. Pain relief is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the benefits of regular chiropractic care! The most common therapeutic procedure performed by doctors of chiropractic is known as “spinal manipulation,” also called “chiropractic adjustment.” The purpose of manipulation is to restore joint mobility by manually applying a controlled force into joints that have become hypomobile – or restricted in their movement – as a result of a tissue injury. Tissue injury can be caused by a single traumatic event, such as improper lifting of a heavy object, or through repetitive stresses, such as sitting in an awkward position with poor spinal posture for an extended period of time. In either case, injured tissues undergo physical and chemical changes that can cause inflammation, pain, and diminished function for the sufferer. Manipulation, or adjustment of the affected joint and tissues, restores mobility, thereby alleviating pain and muscle tightness, and allowing tissues to heal. So depending on whether you have a problem with the lower back, herniated discs, sciatica, pain in the neck, hips, knees…… the appropriate spinal adjustment will help to realign the affected vertebra, helping to free the area of pain and help restore your body to its optimal level of health and encourage good posture which will prevent misalignments of the spine. In the swim

by Jack Troughton

FIVE SWIMMERS from Club Natacion Torrevieja enjoyed the challenge of the ‘VII Traversia Solidaria Playa Paraiso’ on the Mar Menor on Sunday. Hosted by the Esclerosis Multiple Asociacion de Cartagena y Comarca, there were two sea races; younger children swimming 600m and other competitors 1,500m. The club was represented by five swimmers; including the youngest Amy Connolly and gaining fifth place in the 600m ‘Alevin’ for 11 and 12-year-olds, in a time of 5.41. In the longer of the two races Zoe Connolly, Skye Burns, Beth Altabas and Vicki Connolly swam against 120 swimmers over the 1500m course. Zoe came 7th in the ‘Infantil’ category for 14 and 15-year-olds with a time of 20:11; Skye with a time of approximately 23 minutes was unplaced as she missed the second buoy; Vicki in the Masters over 50 age group was first with a time of 23:27; and Beth Altabas continued the winning theme by coming first in the Masters over 60 age group. In two weeks time the club is at sea again, competing in the again in the XII Port of Torre de la Horadada Traversia.

Pego golf society With the temperature topping 35 degrees, it was really too hot to play golf, if that is possible, we had 31 brave souls who made it round Oliva Nova. Some great golf was played today considering the conditions. We had only one guest today and that was Brett Duminy and he was welcomed by our Captain David O’Connor. The course was in magnificent condition, considering there has been little or no rain for almost two months, with the greens almost perfect. The results of the Texas Pairs Competition were as follows: Division 1 1st Place was Ian Robertson and Peter Brown with 63 net off a joint net handicap of 14 2nd Place was John Guest and Paul Trigwell with 65 off a joint net handicap of 9 3rd Place was Nigel Siddall and Rob Westlands with 65 off a joint net handicap

of 10 There were four 2’s today, one by Ian Robertson, and the others by Mike Cuerden, Brett Duminy and David Blakeley. The “Balls in the Water” prize was not won today, as there were only 76 balls in the water which is very low for Pego. Nobody guessed correctly, so it will roll over until next week. Nearest the hole at Hole 3 with their tee shot was David Blakeley with 1.08 meters, and at Hole 16, the closest was Brett Duminy

with 1.63 meters. In the match play Plate quarter finals, Mike Cuerden beat Danny Herron by 4/3 and in the other quarter final Malcolm Cannon beat David Collins by 3/2. If any member or guest would like to play with the Pego Golf Society, and who wouldn’t, as it is a Singles Stableford Competition, please contact our secretary Penny Barden directly on pegosecretary@gmail.com or enter through our website www.pegogolfsociety.com. A warm welcome awaits you.

Rocket’s golf society Kick off! NEW FOOTBALL club FC Roda 06 is looking for people to play against in the Costa Calida area – with three sides needing opponents. The club has a youth team, senior side and a veterans’ team wanting to play six, seven and eight-a-side teams. And Director of Football Neil Youngs said the club was “actively seeking” teams to play against “with the prospect of establishing a league whereby we can play home and away matches.” Anyone interested in taking on the club can call Neil on 637 290 149 or email neilyoungs67@msn.com.

by patricia thompson degrees and plenty of water was the order of the day, a little tip drink at least a half litre of water before you go and play as it is difficult the rehydrate quickly when playing. What was interesting though was the methods used to keep cool; the best I have seen is to soak the Bucket Style hat in water the night before and freeze it ready to wear for the next day. (Really cool!) The next is to do the same with a towel. These methods worked as some of the scores were quite good, for those who did not know about them were not so cool and the score likewise. Well done to Vistabella green staff as the course and in particular the greens is in really good condition and helped thos who could cope with the heat. RESULTS GOLD CATEGORY 1ST Rodney Smith 31 points 2nd Ron Chambers 30 points 3rd Larry Lambe 28 points

SILVER CATEGORY 1st Alan Booker 33 points 2nd Graham Knight 32 points 3rd Geoff Wild 31 points

Rehearsals started by Jack Troughton THE NEW Cardenal Theatre Group is back in rehearsal for new show ‘Stepping Out’ scheduled for the stage on 20th and 21st October. The performances will take place at the Cardenal Belluga Theatre in San Fulgencio and tickets priced at 6€ are already on sale – with profits going to local charities. The group’s June show was postponed after the director left in “unsuccessful circumstances”. However, a new Show Director has been appointed and has “worked very hard” to get the new production underway. Chairman Tom Ford told RTN: “I must say everybody taking part are happy and enjoying their part.” Tickets are available from Cards and More, La Marina, News 4 U, La Marina, and the Tourist Office in La Marina. Alternatively, call Phyllis Hillman on 96 679 0396 or Tom Ford on 96 679 0547.

Smile Charity Group

The ‘Smile Charity Group’ recently made a donation of 660€ to the Benijófar Crisis Appeal, when a cheque was presented by the Group Treasurer, Dolly Ford, to Luis Rodriguez, the Mayor of Benijófar. The cash was raised from the proceeds received for the recent production of “Alice in Blunderland”. A donation of 100€ has also been made to “Natasha’s Appeal”. Natasha, a vibrant, friendly and caring 22 year old has been struck down by 3 debilitating illnesses, and funds are being raised for urgent medical equipment to help make her life more bearable for the future. For more information on the appeal go to www.gofundme.com/wexb7wzw. These two donations brings the total sum raised by the “Smile Charity Group”to €14,084, since our inception 2½ years ago. The script is now finished for our next comedy production “Mind me Ghoulies” . Written by John Wallace, this is a Christmas Ghost Story, and it will be performed, as usual, in local restaurants and bars during December and January. Look out for the confirmed dates in the local press. Auditions for the play will start on Tuesday 30th August, so if you are a budding thesbian, or would just like to have fun, on or off stage, email us at smilecharitygroup@gmail.com, or look us up on Facebook.

Nissan Juke EYE-CATCHING design at an attractive price - that’s the combination on offer from Nissan with its Juke, the increasingly fashionable compact sports utility vehicle.

Facts at a glance: New price: 21,000€. Top speed: 109mph. 0-60mph: 11.2secs Economy: up to 47mpg (urban) Watch the video at www.testdrives.biz

There’s no denying it, it’s a great design (as you can see in the video at testdrives.biz) that from a distance looks like a three-door but thanks to cleverly concealed rear door handles it is actually a five door. It represents extremely good value for money, too. It seems to appeal to all generations, too, from the young girl who cycles past and tells her dad how she likes it through to the middle aged man who simply stands and stares. And the gentleman of senior years I spot driving his in Weymouth… Arguably the brown finish of the test vehicle lends

itself to the design and my wife and I feel that cream leather upholstery would complement this particularly well. As it is the black cloth seats are comfortable even over a fairly long journey that we take from Hampshire to Dorset. The raised ride height is always a welcome bonus for me because it gives greater command of the road. It also allows the driver to spot parking spaces that others do not in packed car parks. I find the 1.5 diesel unit pleasantly poky at speeds under 60mph with third gear being very receptive between 30mph and 60mph. Over that speed and it proves slower than expected and at times struggles to hold its own while in the outside lane of the motorway. Hills slow it up a bit requiring a change down to fourth

gear but it is only a 1.5 litre and a diesel and so overall it does a good job and with hard driving will return over 40mpg. The best recorded was around 47mpg. Perhaps surprisingly the Juke holds the road and feels like it’s on rails when cornering, meaning that it can be driven with gusto even round bends. Rather than simply being an attractive head-turner it is also pleasingly a ‘driver’s car’, helped by the fairly hard suspension. The n-tec model tested also comes fitted with cruise control which is useful for motorway cruising. Bear in mind that the test takes place just after the UK has been badly battered by storms and the Juke copes with the floods admirably. Just down the road from my parents in law there is an enormous flood that has previously shut the road but the Juke makes light work of it. Reversing the Juke is made easier by the camera display on the dashboard.
