DEVASTATING WILD fires swept across huge swaths of countryside this summer causing massive damage to property and the environment – in many cases started deliberately by firebugs. Local, provincial and regional government are now united in a ‘round table’ mission to prevent fires and protect both residents and the countryside.
The arson attacks have been described as “environmental terrorism” and it is to the credit of the Valencia government and President Ximo Puig that there is no backdoor route to reclassifying the land and clearing the way for a feeding frenzy of developers resulting in new building and concrete jungles. Instead, the authorities are looking to sympathetically restore woodland and set about clearing undergrowth in other forest areas. The affected areas are eerily quiet, there is still a stench of ashes and colour has leeched away – it looks like old photos of the Somme – but Mother Nature will soon wave her magic wand and regeneration begin. Poppies lined the lanes of the Costas earlier this year, to many people always a reminder of the sacrifice made 100 years ago in Flanders fields. The Royal British Legion will launch the 2016 Poppy Appeal in Benidorm on Friday 14th October and at RTN Towers we like to wear ours with pride. The crimson-coloured flower has become a symbol of the price paid by servicemen and women across the generations in the protection of freedom. This year there is a time for a moment of reflection on Armistice Day on 11th November and on Remembrance Sunday, 14th November.

APSA in fashion THE APSA charity shop in Albox is on the lookout for clothes to grace the catwalk in November when the animal charity hosts another fashion show. by Jack Troughton The Animal Protection Society Albox is currently running a summer sale at the shop in Avenida Lepanto, opposite Olivers. And the shop team always welcomes donations of items for sale and gratefully receive jewellery, clothes and bric-a-brac. If people have particularly good-quality clothes to donate, they might wish to take them to the shop now as volunteers are collecting then for the fashion show, set to take place at Maloans on Wednesday 23rd November; Claire is pictured modelling at last year’s event. It is open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 2pm for customers to browse its stock – and view the photographs of dogs being cared for by APSA and looking for a foster family or permanent home. However, if people are unable to take a dog into their home, it is hoped they might wish to sponsor one. Many businesses and individuals have done this - every little helps when APSA has so many dogs and kennels still to build.
Car thief caught red handed
GUARDIA CIVIL have reported that a spree of vehicle break-ins were carried out by just one man. The accused, known only as MEH and a resident in Campohermoso, Nijar has been charged with theft from five vehicles parked in various streets within the village. Officers made their arrest near one of the broken into cars as the man fitted the description given by some of the neighbours attending other break-ins. The thief was in possession of a black bag which contained several items which had been removed from other vehicles - linking him to not just to the initial but a further four.

Embrace a new way of life FAYE TODD and husband Brian enjoy the Spanish lifestyle and even went on a journey of exploration around their adopted country in a mobile home. by Jack Troughton Home for the couple since 2008 has been Orihuela Costa, although they have enjoyed a connection with Spain for the last 14 years. Now both retired, Faye has become part of the British Consulate’s ‘Our Local Ambassador’ experiment; helping others make a success of a new life in the sun. “I think you have to embrace the Spanish way of life; if a Spaniard went to the UK, he would be expected to learn English and adapt…it makes sense,” she said. “If we go out to eat we like to eat in Spanish restaurants, just like the Spanish. We speak a little Spanish and I probably understand and can read more; it is a confidence thing.” And she said until around 18 months ago they had a small motor home. “We went all over Spain in it – we wanted to get out and visit as many parts of Spain as we could, it was an eye-opener. “Overall, we have really enjoyed Spain and have no intention – no matter what happens in Brexit – of going back to the UK to live unless we are forced to!” RENT Faye recommends people do their homework before they buy property to make sure they are in the right place. “Preferably rent for a while to make sure you like a location…two kilometres up the road can be very different.” She said they had chosen to register themselves for their NIE numbers, ‘residencia´ and change their UK driving license to Spanish ones. “If you are prepared to sit and wait you can get most things done, patience and homework are the two main things.” Faye said they chose Orihuela Costa because they were “fairly close” to everything, including a bus route, shops, restaurants and a hospital. “They are the things that influenced why we bought here.” And they keep busy. Both are members of RAFA and the Orihuela Branch of the Royal British Legion, they bowl at the Emerald Isle Club – “something we have got hooked on!” – and are active members of the Church of England congregation of the St Peter and St Paul Church in Torrevieja, where Faye is also a member of the Mothers Union, and members of U3A. “We both decided that while we can, we want to be as active as we can be. We also like to go cruising on ships!” Faye is pictured with British Ambassador Simon Manley at the launch of the Our Local Ambassador scheme in Alicante.
Safety first by Jack Troughton PLANS TO protect people living near Costa Blanca forests and the environment are being drawn up after the devastating fires across the region earlier this month. A ‘round table’ has been created to combine and coordinate the authorities involved in fighting fires and draw up measures to protect and prevent such “disasters”. And a new headquarters of the Fire Service is to be created in Benissa to complement existing stations in Denia and Benidorm and strengthen the fire-fighting capability of the Marina Alta. Javea Town Hall hosted meetings with President of the Generalitat Ximo Puig and the Elena Cebrian, the Minister for the Environment, President of the Alicante government Cesar Sanchez and Jaime Lloret, the Deputy for Safety. The Mayor of Javea Jose Chulvi also welcomed counterparts from neighbouring Benitachell; as well as Bolulla, Taberna and Callosa – communities affected by a separate blaze in the Sierra de Bernia. Forest fires across the region made international news and arsonists have been blamed for starting them in what has been labelled “environmental terrorism”. In Javea and Benitachell 1,400 people need to be evacuated as flames swept across the area from 4th September, affecting 820 hectares. Mr Chulvi said: “The priority must be the management of the forested zones and, above all, the homes next to forest areas. “The various administrations need to coordinate and be involved in their cleaning as well as creating effective evacuation plans.” SAFETY He said Javea covered 68 square kilometres with large areas of forest. “We need to reconcile environmental protection with the safety of people and property.” The mayor said Javea and Benitachell suffered “a major disaster” but had not been alone as it was supported by the regional and provincial authorities. And he said the round table meetings should strive for lasting results and said work to help areas hit by fires must be well-planned but “carried out as soon as possible as our residents need answers.” It is understand the first meeting of members of the new body will be in around two weeks after technicians have been able to fully assess the damage caused by “the inferno”. It will discuss the best actions to be taken to deal with damaged areas and increase the safety of urbanisations and their surroundings – taking into account the views of experts and those who sue the countryside, such as farmers and hikers. Mr Puig has already pledged that land damaged in the recent spate of wild fires cannot be re-evaluated as being suitable for construction. He said the goal was to prevent anyone “to ever have the slightest interest in burning down woodland for rezoning”; adding the PSOE-led administration had already overturned earlier legislation allowing development “in exceptional circumstances”. Mr Puig stressed: “This can no longer be done in the Valencian region. It can in other parts of Spain. We are dealing with environmental terrorism that affects this region’s natural heritage and the lives of many people.” Colleague Mrs Cebrian said the southern coast of Javea was to receive special protection as the government was pushing forward a plan to preserve the cliffs of the Marina Alta.

THE AGE Support shop in Arboleas plans to help customers choose a holiday wardrobe with a collection of Autumn clothes. by Jack Troughton For many travellers, it is the time of year to enjoy a cruise and the shop has a selection of clothing for life on the ocean wave – including a range evening gowns; as modelled by Pat (pictured) a member of the shop team for three years. Shop manageress Margaret Ridyard said all the clothing on sale have been washed and ironed prior to sale and said everything was reasonably priced. The shop is open Monday to Saturday 10am to 1.30pm and is found in Placeta Padre Arias - near the Saturday market and bakery. And Age Support is always in need of donations of clothing and bric-a-brac to sell in the shop; and also needs volunteers for the shop and its welfare team. The next project for the welfare team is opening a new Age Support Office and Help Desk in Albox; with more information available soon.

Silver screen adventure TEENAGER LAUREN Denyer has won a starring role in the thriller ‘Dirty White Lies’ set to be filmed off the Costa Blanca coast in October. by jack troughton The 15-year-old successfully auditioned for the part of ‘Isabelle’ – a character five years her junior – and survives a high body count as her parents’ yachting holiday is left, well, all at sea. Lauren, who lives in Benitachell and is a student at Xabia International College, said she was “really excited” to have won the part in the independent movie being produced by London-based company ‘Film Engine’. Phil Taylor, the film’s producer and chief executive of the film company, had given Lauren a part in a short film. She said: “Phil said there might be a part in another film I could audition for – I did that in April and May and got the part. “At XIC I did drama in years 7, 8, and 9, but it was not an option in my GCSE years – but hopefully my Mum will let me do acting lessons outside classes. “I am really, really, excited. I have read the script a lot and I am really looking forward to filming with all the cast members.
“I even emailed Phil in August and said I was quite bored with school holidays and wanted to learn the script – he sent it to me and I have read it through quite a few times.” Asked what her friends thought of her success, Lauren said they had various opinions. “Some think it’s really good I am starring in a film; I think others are a little jealous – but I don’t care, because I am so excited!” MARRIAGE The story features an expat family living luxuriously in Spain. Julia manages a struggling art gallery and wants to save her marriage to Tony, a successful but unfaithful plastic surgeon. Julia is serious about saving the couple’s relationship and ends her affair with lover Matthew – she persuades Tony to they should take a yachting trip together but their daughter Isabelle stows away on the boat. And things take a turn for the worse when Matthew and beautiful companion Graciella – a girl hiding her own secrets - suddenly turn up on a yacht moored alongside.
(From left) Phil, Lauren, and Wolfgang
The plot thickens...and according to the Film Engine synopsis: “There are not many survivors at the end of the voyage”. Phil and director Wolfgang Buld praised Lauren’s “dedication” to the project which has already attracted interest in a European cinema release – with the hope of a screening in Javea. “We will film over three about three weeks and hope for a release next summer,” said Phil. “It will be at the Cannes Film Festival
next year. “We could have gone for an actress with a lot more film credits for the part of Isabelle but I knew if Lauren got the role she would be absolutely dedicated and her parents are 110% behind her; in fact so is everyone around her, the whole community.” He said Lauren’s character was heavily involved in the shooting schedule. “She is doing her own stunts...she even ends up in the sea, but she can swim!”

Contract with a view CONSTRUCTION OF the new ‘Plaza Nueva’ in Mojacar will start in October with the new building and its important ‘mirador’ ready by Easter. by Jack Troughton Albaisa Infraestructures SA won the contract with a tender of 1.026 million Euros after beating off competition from six other construction companies in a sealed bid contest. The company was chosen because “among other considerations, it presented the most economically advantageous tender”, said a spokesman for Mojacar Town Hall. And Albaisa Infraestructures saw its bid picked by a panel headed by Mayor Rosmari Cano and including members of the council and architects from the municipality and the regional government. The company’s task is to demolish the existing building and construct a new feature to include council offices and support a new ‘Plaza Neuva Mirador’ – a viewing point with panoramic views over the countryside. It is planned the work will finish in March last year and the plaza will be open for Easter, ready to welcome an influx of visitors to the town. Access to the area is guaranteed at all times and the council has planned alternative routes for drivers, including some roads becoming two-way, controlled by traffic lights. The local authority said any necessary road closures will be carried out in coordination with local police “and with minimal interference to tourism.”
Road safety improvements by Caroline Tyszka THE MINISTRY of Public Works and Housing has agreed that the A-352 Cuevas de Almanzora to Garrucha road requires redesigning to improve road safety. Aima Engineering has two months to put plans into action that will provide safer access to the cemetery in Vera and connect with the industrial estates via a service road. Currently the heavy traffic flow has meant that more accidents have occurred on this stretch of road, between kilometres 3.5 and 5 than in other areas. The project has a budget of 500,000 euros.

Clean up the world
VOLUNTEERS gathered to help collect rubbish from the beach and seabed around Benidorm Island. by Jack Troughton As part of the “Clean up the World” campaign nearly one hundred people helped gather 300 kilos of rubbish over a four hour period. The local police underwater team helped with other divers to remove items below the water; whilst people worked tirelessly to dispose of the many cans, bottles and other items that had been irresponsibly discarded. Some of the volunteers came from Aspanion, Red Cross, and local diving centres – all helping to make the area safer for marine life as well as members of the public.

BENIDORM HOSTS the grand final of the Oceanman World Championship of open water swimming on Sunday 16th October testing swimmers qualified to enter the final race. by Jack Troughton
Swimmers from across the Costa Blanca are also welcome to take part as there is an Open Race for those who wish to test themselves in a sport with a growing international reputation. It is the second year Spain’s most famous resort has hosted the finals and will decide the male and female winners of the 2016 world circuit in the 9.3km Oceanman and the 5.5km Half Oceanman events. The respective winners will be classed as world champions. And the Open Races cover the same distances but with an additional 1.5km event. The longest races start at the Mal Pas beach and Benidorm Island – where the ‘half’ distance events start – is the turning point. The 1.5km race starts and finishes on the beach – the finishing line for all the longer events. Organisers say more than half the swimmers already entered for the event are ‘foreigners’; representing more than 20 different nations. The races should make an interesting spectacle for visitors – anyone wishing to enter can register at www.oceanman.net; pictures and information of earlier events is available at www. facebook.com/oceanmanswim.

The King is dead GOLFING LEGEND Arnold Palmer has died at the age of 87 after a long and successful career in which he became known as the sport’s “greatest ambassador” and simply “The King”. by Tony Matthews The American was in hospital in his home town of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he was undergoing heart tests when he passed away. Helping promote golf in a new television age in the sixties, he attracted a legion of fans known as ‘Arnie’s army’ – he won a total of 91 tournaments worldwide and his seven ‘major’ tournament victories in seven years included wins at the Open in 1961 at Royal Birkdale and 1962 at Troon. He also claimed a record 62 PGA tour wins. “Arnold Palmer is the most important golfer to play the game” said BBC’s golf correspondent Iain Carter. “His force of charisma put the game on the map and it never dimmed”. Fellow golfing great and a close friend of Palmer’s, Jack Nicklaus, has already admitted that he will “miss him greatly”. He tweeted: “We’ve just lost one of the incredible people in the game of golf and in all of sports...He was more than a golfer or even a great golfer, he was an icon, a
legend.” Tributes to the sporting star poured in from other stars of the golfing world. “Thanks Arnold for your friendship, counsel and a lot of laughs. Your philanthropy and humility are part of your legend,” said Tiger Woods. And Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy said: “He was a true pioneer for our sport. Forever remembered.” US golfer Zach Johnson added: “My heart aches with passing of The King. What he did for golf cannot be measured. An athlete, a pioneer, a philanthropist, a family man, and much more... his legacy will live on.” The 44th US President, Barack Obama circulated a photo taken with the golfer at the White House. “Here’s to The King who was as extraordinary on the links as he was generous to others. Thanks for the memories, Arnold.” Palmer was born in Latrobe, Pennsylvania in 1929. The son of the green keeper and groundsman at his local golf club, he later became the professional at the club and rose to be one of the sport’s most dominant players in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

Tourist ‘taken’ by Caroline Tyszka A BRITISH holidaymaker in Benidorm is believed to have been targeted by a gang and drugged, abducted, and forced to empty bank accounts of cash. The 35-year-old was later released unharmed and could have been doped with the drug Scopolamine – sometimes called ´devil’s breath’ – which causes drowsiness and memory loss. Paul Tilbury, from Greater Manchester, was on holiday in Spain’s most famous resort and had been enjoying a night out with friends on Friday 23rd September when he became separated from the group. He returned around 48 hours later on Sunday 25th September. Friend Julie Thomasson said Paul was “feeling very rough and having very little recollection of what actually happened.” Now back in the UK with his family, Paul remains very confused about what happened – but has been quick to thank people who helped in the search. He said: “Thank you for all of your concerns. Being spiked is not something that I would wish on anyone, horrible. Thanks to all of the people that I am here with that went to the ends of the earth to try to find me.” A family friend said: “We believe Paul was drugged and thought these people to be his friends. We know Paul was manipulated into
emptying his accounts; he was not drunk, very disorientated and is suffering considerable shock and bewilderment from this ordeal.” Paul is believed to have been put in a taxi back to the resort after his accounts had been emptied. When he re-joined his friends he thought it was still Friday. Scopolamine is an odourless and tasteless drug known to be used by criminals. Secretly administered in a drink or food, a victim remains conscious and can converse, enabling thieves to manipulate them. Afterwards the ‘target’ will have little or no recollection of what has take place. The family friend told RTN: “Paul was seen by a female witness outside his hotel at 6am on the Saturday morning having being escorted to his room and emptying it of his money and wallet. “He was very agitated. His friend came outside of the hotel after he left and saw a black Audi, and a woman peeping through the fence at Paul. The friend was then purposely distracted by a second woman - when he turned back Paul was gone.” A British woman who was waiting for her transfer coach outside the hotel told police that she had also seen the Audi, which had been circulating around the block. Another witness is certain he saw Paul in the Villamartin Plaza some 20 miles away in a bar with a man and two women. He later told the family that it seemed one of the women was friends with the bar owners.

Golfers fired up THE SAS Golf Society has chipped in with a “much appreciated” 1,250€ donation to the voluntary firemen of Javea following the devastating blaze earlier this month. by Jack Troughton The firefighters of ISVH Bomberos have sent the golfers a big thanks to the society for its contribution and message of appreciation. Handing over a cheque (pictured), the society said: “On behalf of the members of the SAS Golf Society Javea, we would like to thank the ISVH Bomberos for their bravery, hard work and commitment in helping to keep us safe during the recent devastating fires and at all other times during the year. “Whilst we cannot thank you enough, we have made a collection amongst our members and would like to show our appreciation of your efforts by donating the sum of 1250€ to support you in your work. Again, we extend our heartfelt thanks.”

Burglary leads to drug discovery NATIONAL POLICE officers were called to a violent robbery and discovered a marijuana plantation was the target of the theft. by Caroline Tyszka As the burglar alarm was ringing at a property in Villafranqueza, Alicante officers rushed to the scene believing that a crime was in progress. When they reached the villa they discovered that three masked bandits had entered the home of two brothers, attacked them, stolen 500₏ and fled. However, while at the scene, officers discovered 29 marijuana plants at least two metres high, and five kilos of buds ready for distribution – the brothers aged 31 and 52 were immediately arrested. Other items seized were scales, a BB gun and three mobile phones; and National Police officers are still hunting the three masked robbers.

Horses say more than ‘neigh’ HORSES HAVE proved to be better at communicating with humans than first thought and have successfully jumped scientific hurdles to show off their intelligence. by Jack Troughton An experiment showed they were quite capable of judging weather conditions and if they felt cold could ask for a blanket. The carrot – but no stick – test reined in fake research known as the ‘Clever Hans’ effect when a nag of the same name won worldwide fame by seemingly being able to answer maths problems. Clever Hans would stamp a hoof the correct number of times in answer to the conundrum but it was later shown the equine mathematician was actually responding to prompts from his trainer. However, a group of Norwegian vets has reported success in a controlled experiment involving 23 horses and found the animals were capable of responding after training for 10 to 15 minutes a day over two weeks. The horses were tasked with coping with weather conditions and pointing to three symbols – if they wanted a blanket they would point to one, if they wanted it removed to another, and the third possibility was ‘no change’. And researchers found rather than responding to a prompt, it was indeed down to the weather. To test the meaning of the simple signs, the horses were let into a paddock for two hours to appreciate the local climate. Using their muzzles to communicate, they could indicate ‘blanket on’, ‘blanket off’ or ‘no change’ – based on their individual requirements of creature comfort. The tests were strictly monitored and unlike Clever Hans, there was no right or wrong answer and the horse were rewarded with a slice of carrot whatever choice was made.

Drug debts spark murder DETECTIVES BELIEVE a family of four was brutally murdered over unpaid debts in a drug deal that went wrong. by Jack Troughton Spanish police suspect the Brazilian family was on the run and said the victims had lived in three different locations in three years. The dismembered bodies of two adults and two children were found in a rented home in Pioz in the province of Guadalajara on 18th September. Neighbours raised the alarm after complaining of a “terrible stench” coming from the property. Investigators believe the four had been dead for at least a month and identification of the heavily decomposed remains was only possible after worried family members from Brazil contacted the country’s consulate in Madrid and Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Police said the nature of the slaughter indicated the killings were carried out by professional hitmen; using a butcher’s knife or an axe. The bodies were bagged up and left inside the home – giving them extra time to flee. Detectives said they had done a “meticulous” and “methodical” job. The adults have been identified as Marcos Nogueira, who was a restaurant manager in Brazil and came to Spain looking for work – and at one stage worked in a Murcia restaurant. His wife Janaina Americo – they married in 2013 – was the daughter of a well-known businessman; who used Facebook to keep in touch with family and friends across the Atlantic, the lack of contact arousing their suspicions something was wrong.

Is your home covered correctly? With the season coming upon us for cruises, I thought you would be interested in hearing about our travel insurance which now includes cruises.
by
Jennifer Cunningham
More and more of us are taking cruises and to be able to insure yourself against the following may be very helpful. They are only operative if indicated in your schedule of travel, with confirmation from the cruise company if anything is changed or cancelled after the event. Should a scheduled port visit be cancelled due to adverse weather or time table restrictions, you will be eligible for compensation, but you cannot claim if it is your own failure to attend. If you are confined to your stateroom over a 24 hour period, confirmed by the ships medical officer, you will be compensated. If you are hospitalised or an in-patient, due to an accident or illness during your cruise, again it may be possible to claim. There is cover available for your travel connections. If you miss your connecting flight, not due to your own failure but due to a cruise ship problem, there is compensation available. Obviously everything you claim for has to be certified by the cruise company but I found this cover to be very interesting and helpful and to have specialised travel cover for cruise holidays enables you to enjoy your time away, feeling secure that you are covered adequately. The other holiday that is now coming to be very popular at this time of year is winter sports. There are certain situations covered regarding winter sports which include ski equipment, equipment hire, ski
pack and piste closure, avalanche or landslide. If you are interested in finding out about these specialised travel insurances, please contact one of my offices and an added bonus is that you pay in Sterling. I, along with my Sales Consultants find the insurance world extremely frustrating sometimes. We continually advise clients to be very careful when offered a cheaper price, supported by the words “oh yes, it is exactly the same cover as your previous policy or quotation”. Please, never accept these words at face value. Always ask to see the policy conditions so that you can compare the cover. One of the main reasons for taking out a house insurance policy is to protect yourself against the calamity of fire which, unfortunately, Javea has just experienced. In all the time I have lived here, I have never encountered such a dangerous situation. If it hadn´t been for the incredible work carried out by both the volunteers and the professionals, it could have been so much worse. It was amazing how little damage was caused to the properties, considering the huge area that was affected. Despite the best efforts by the firemen there were a few houses lost but, in the main, the damage was restricted to gardens, plants, trees and outside furniture. How distressing and frightening to see your home surrounded by fire and having to evacuate. Many evacuees did not know for several days what they were going to find on their return. On talking to a family involved, on returning they feared the worst and were overjoyed to see their home was undamaged but, sadly, along with many others, their beautiful landscaped garden had been totally
destroyed and the smell of burning was very prevalent and still is. I am sure there are many who have been disappointed with the garden insurance cover offered with their policies, as replacing a complete garden, to include the furniture can be extremely expensive. I know for a fact that Liberty Seguros have already paid for trees to be replaced and quite a number of gardens and furniture already. Whilst I understand many other companies cover does not extend to this type of claim. I was horrified to hear a colleague of one of my members of staff was insured by a bank and had to claim for substantial fire damage to their home. Amazingly the bank will only cover the damaged tiles and when she pointed out that the floor was over 10 years old and the tiles were no longer available, the bank just shrugged their shoulders. It is so vital when insuring your biggest financial asset that you protect your home as well as you possibly can. There are no cheap shortcuts in the insurance world, especially when it comes to your home – just take your time and make sure you have the exact cover you want and need. Never accept the verbal word. How traumatic to lose your home or garden to discover that you were not as insured as you believed. This is where a professional insurance company, like Liberty Seguros, shines. The assessors were out the next day, whilst Sarah, my company’s Claims administrator has been helping many of my customers with their claim procedures. In my opinion, it is far better to go with a well-known, worldwide, secure insurance company than the banks. It makes sense.

Invest in your health Some people are mainly focused on the price when they look for a health insurance and they decide to contract the cheapest one, but… Watch Out! Inexpensive health insurances are available on the market at the time of contracting the policy, but as the person gets older the price of the policies drastically increases considering the change to a higher age bracket. ASSSA does not increase the price due to age, which means that the premium will remain the same age bracket that you contracted at the beginning. In the end you will pay a lower amount and your insurance will result cheaper. A further point to consider is the written contractual guarantee of no cancellation. If there is no guarantee and the Insurance Company cancels the policy, it may occur that contracting another insurance becomes complicated due to age or the development of some diseases. ASSSA guarantees under contract that your policy will not be cancelled, therefore you can have the peace of mind of being provided with a lifetime coverage. Health is the best investment we can ever make and as such should be treated, not as the purchase of the cheapest choice by the time of contracting. Other factors to consider are the solvency and experience of the Company, the customer service, easy access to medical assistance, medical network and coverage offered. ASSSA puts at your disposal its solvency and more than 80 years of experience to provide you with the best personalised attention in your own language and the best health care any time you need it. Don’t wait any longer. Invest in your health with ASSSA. ASSSA INVITES YOU TO THEIR OPEN DAYS Visit ASSSA on their Open Day on the Costa Blanca from 11:00 to 16:00 and take advantage of the special discounts they have to offer for this day only. Poppy Appeal 2016
by Jack Troughton
EMOTIVE POMP and circumstance returns to Benidorm on Friday 14th October when the Royal British Legion launches its annual Poppy Appeal. A parade of standards along the seafront is led by the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums – acting as a modern day Pied Piper to attracting crowds of holidaymakers and residents. The appeal – which raises vital funds to support former
servicemen and women and their families in Spain and the UK – culminates on Remembrance Sunday, this year on 13th November. The parade, organised by the Royal British Legion Spain District North, starts at Calle Castello at noon and proceeds along the Paseo of Levante Beach to the dais in the Rincon de Loix. Special guests include the Mayor of Benidorm Antonio Perez;
the British Defence Attache, Capt. Paul Lemkes RN; representatives from the British Consulate in Alicante; the Chairman of the Legion’s Membership Council, Lt. Col. David Whimpenny; and District North Chairman Nigel Hails – and two Chelsea Pensioners. After speeches, a guest bugler will sound the traditional Last Post and Reveille; always an emotional moment to end the occasion and mark the start of the important campaign.

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// A double whammy with Mars brings something to a very satisfactory conclusion as the trine with Ceres brings a richness and prosperity; and a square with Jupiter brings good fortune and luck into the equation. This time you got away with it but in future don’t take a gamble when you have too much to lose. Right now it is finally time to celebrate! The forthcoming Venus sextile with Pluto brings you the time to re think what you are actually doing right now. In hindsight there is something out there that you would never have got involved in if you knew where it was leading. However there comes a loophole and it is time to call it a day and take this as the opportunity you need to go.
Uranus influences Mercury and a message has already been sent that those concerned need to take to heart. Things cannot continue the way that they are because somewhere along the line someone is going to get hurt; and actions speak a lot louder than words ever could. You have the time to bring back stability where it is so very needed.
Dwarf planet Kora calla the shots and takes on Mercury midweek, as timing is vital and the time is right. This is a busy time to work on domestic chores and to make preparations for the months ahead as there is work to be done and you are just the person to do it. Now a question comes into your life and there has to be a good answer? Saturn is both attractive and disruptive right now that you have much bigger fish to fry. You never know what you can do if you try and you are about to discover this, allbeit in a round about way. Above all do not listen to the so called good advice of others since they do not fully know your current situation, nor what you are so fully capable of! Your indecisive plan to stall for time has taken a drama and made it a crisis. You have one of two options open for you now, but you are being held unfairly responsible for the errors of others and that cannot be right. Since nobody could have done better than you; take the high ground to air anger. You are not to ne messed with.
Venus trines Neptune and this brings a romantic energy into your soul, awakening your spirit and releasing the energy of newly found capabilities from within. You are worried about something and fear has stopped you thinking of the daily activities which now need your love and attention to enable the success you need to make a difference. Hold back on your initial action to a refusal, since there is more in all this than first meets the eye. You appear insensitive and lacking in emotion but then you have your reasons, and telling a few home truths would lighten the situation somewhat. Whatever, send out the message loud and clear that you are not to be messed with anymore! By Jupiter! This is the time you have been waiting for, and both time and tide wait for no man. Forget the recent past actions and concentrate your energies on those who both love and understand you; because they have something to share with you and that is what you need to do; make recent plans into a reality that helps those you love.
Receptive and geared up for action you are waiting for the green light on a project right now; and it is indeed something to get your teeth into. Uranus, planet of opportunity and research is there to assist Mercury to send out the right message loud and clear to all, whether they want to hear it straight from the horse’s mouth, or maybe not.
Elated by actions of the Sun at last things do seem to be going your way and you are in the right place at the right time for a change. Now that you can count your blessings at long last, start to see a clear way ahead that will allow you to follow your true destiny and teach you the wisdom that is truly the merit of your innermost soul. Bursting with psychic energy you are both intuitive and apprehensive of work you have yet to do. Since you know full well that the guidance you need from time to time is out there for you, believe and your faith will turn things around... the way that they should be. People will never know what you don’t do, so show them what you do do, and do it well!

Kenny, you helped me to contact my Guide many years ago, and I have felt lately that times are changing and I need to move on. What do I do with my old Guide? Meryl J.P. Time to move on indeed! I know what you mean, you can’t just dump the old Guide and you are in need of another. Retiring a Guide happens, and Spirit is normally very attentive when this happens. Send out the message loud and clear that you need to have the Spiritual Guide you deserve and ask Spirit to help your existing Guide to move on to where he needs to be. This is simple, effective and deals fairly and squarely with the matter. Your present Guide will make his own decision as to where he needs to go and everyone is hopefully happy!
If It’s Your Birthday This Week
Expect the same old same old and that is what you will get. Accept the guiding influences which are abounding out there in the Cosmos this astrological year to reap the rich rewards that are out there for you!

My trackpad is oversensitive HI AUNTY: Firstly Happy New Year, and thanks for all your help in the past. I am getting very frustrated with my Sony VA10 Model vpceb 1zoe: I am using Windows 7. The problem is with the touch pad which is over sensitive. Visits to the web over the last few months show this is a problem with other users. And typing this note to you has needed two corrections where the cursor has moved into the middle of the note. I have tried to find alternative drivers as the ones installed give no facility for adjusting the sensitivity. Visits to the Sony site eventually advise the model is not recognised. And the Synaptics route has identified the ones in use as v13.2.6.1.20 jul 09: Keith Aunty says: It appears that most touchpad issues can be solved by shutting down the laptop, removing the batter, pressing and holding the start button for 10 seconds, replacing the battery and starting the lap top. Also, in the control panel, you should have options to change all sorts of touchpad set-
tings, including sensitivity. Failing that, you can always try downloading the Driver pack from synaptics, who make the touchpad: http://www.synaptics.com/en/ drivers.php And as a last resort, you can always use a USB mouse.
Scanning a documents as a text document HI AUNTY: Is there a way I can change the scanning to be a text Doc instead of an image? I feel sure in my previous Epson printer it always went into my docs as a text Doc. Your advice would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Ray. Aunty says: Most documents are scanned and saved as a graphical image. If you want to scan a document containing text and to save it as a text document, you must use Optical character recognition (OCR) software. OCR will scan your document, and try and convert the text it sees and save it into a text document. If you have Microsoft Office, then you should have their “Microsoft Office Document Imaging in the MS Office tools folder. Otherwise, you will need to find some OCR software - Google free OCR software download.

Christmas stars by Jack Troughton TWO TEENAGERS have starring roles in the Studio 32 winter production; the Broadway version of ‘A Christmas Carol – The Musical’. Based on the Charles Dickens’ classic seasonal tale, the show features memorable songs, dance, and humour, all based around the much-loved timeless storyline. Proceeds from the show will again support the San Fulgencio Alzheimer’s Society. Alice Wakeford and Jacob Baylis (pictured), both aged 14, both have important roles in the production, with the cast busy in rehearsal. Alice plays the Ghost of Christmas Past, taking Scrooge back in time to help teach him the error of his miserly ways. She has already been involved in three Studio32 shows including playing ‘Chava’ in the recent production of ‘Fiddler on the Roof’. Jacob is Tiny Tim – he has played
Study the lunar landscape ANYONE INTERESTED in astronomy can join a special ‘Moonwatch’ on Thursday 13th October on the coast near Orihuela. Following the success of a gathering to view Saturn through telescopes, the Vega Baja Astronomy Group is to study the lunar landscape from 8.45pm at the Punta Prima Promenade, near the Nautilus Restaurant. The moon orbits Earth and never fails to impress watchers using a telescope – it is the planets nearest neighbour in space, a mere quarter of a million miles away. The group believes everyone is so familiar with the moon they can forget its significance and its bleak but beautiful landscape. Using binoculars or a telescope, the mountains, craters and valleys look spectacularly steep and rugged because of a low sun casting long dramatic shadows. The Vega Baja Astronomy Group meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 2:30pm at Casa Tom on Avenida Jaca, San Luis. For more information, visit vegabaja.astronomygroup@gmail.com.

I had a go at Jay Z last year on the back of his attempt to muscle his way through the music business with his ´Tidal Wave´ streaming service, as it was clear to me that this guy was fuelled by greed and the need to be ´the man´ in the pop world. It has now come to pass that the rapper has struggled to pay his bills, and reportedly has about $438,000 due in outstanding payments. On the business of its customers, although official figures are yet to be released, according to the Daily Mail Tidal Wave has a mere 4.2 million users, and with Spotify and Apple Music having 30 million and 11 million users respectively, the end is nigh. Jay Z needs to go out and buy himself a large roll of duct tape and shut the f**k up!

Louis doing it the way only Louis does Louis Theroux was hired as a writer for US magazine ´Spy´ in 1992 after which he worked as a correspondent on US show ´TV Nation´ providing segments on offbeat subjects including selling Avon cosmetics to women in the Amazon Rainforest. Louis is now world-renowned for clever but in your face television / film documentaries. He´s here today as come October 7th Louis´s latest work will be shown in selected cinemas, and the reason for this cloak and dagger act is that the subject matter of the film is the Church Of Scientology. The film includes footage of the work he did with former Church bigwig Marty Rathbun, who previously revealed he was asked to ‘wiretap’ Nicole Kidman and engineer her split from Scientologist Tom Cruise. Speaking rather humbly about his work Louis said: “People say it’s like I´m playing a character but this is certainly not the case. Yes I’m occasionally a bit cheeky, but underneath they recognise that there’s something real there.” Judge for yourself with this video clip. Scientology “Squirrel Busters” harass-

Ryan Seacrest is from Atlanta, Georgia and began broadcasting when he was just 18. He hosted American Idol, for which he won an Emmy Award nomination, and won an Emmy for producing ´Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution.´ Two weeks ago on his morning show ´On Air with Ryan Seacrest´, things turned a tad sour when he quizzed singer Ariana Grande about her rumoured boyfriend Mac Miller. Ariana said she was there to promote her latest album and not her private life to which Ryan said he was referring to an Instagram picture she shared of herself and Mac cuddling and said “ but I saw you confirm this relationship with Mac Miller on Instagram.” On an internet poll 75% said she should be ready for questions, she’s a celebrity, after all. See for yourself. Ariana Grande SNAPS At Ryan Seacrest For Asking About Mac Miller & Love Life
Although Fifty Shades of Grey was hyped through the roof ahead on its release on Valentine´s day last year, it still ended up as a bit of a damp squib, a movie that in my own personal experience was seen by around twice as many females as males … make of that what you may. The game plan has always been to make a film of each of E.L. James´ books, and accordingly ´Fifty Shades Darker´ due for release, on Valentine´s day next year, is apparently a lot more interesting a movie. There’s still plenty of sizzling chemistry between Anastasia and Christian Grey, again played by Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan, and Kim Basinger joins the cast as Elena Lincoln/Mrs Robinson, Christian’s long-time friend and business partner who threatens to put the spokes in their relationship. I dare you to watch the trailer! Fifty Shades Darker. The trailer

Lady Gaga announced last week that she will be recording a cover of an Amy Winehouse song in aid of the late singer’s foundation. She told The Sun she will perform one of her songs for the Amy Winehouse Foundation YouTube channel, and that she hopes this cover, as well as others by singers like Leona Lewis, will raise money for the charity which is planning to open a woman-only rehab. Amy’s father Mitch said “We’ve got this new YouTube channel where stars from around the world are going to do an Amy track and we can start to make money for the Foundation.” Adele could also be involved after recently paying an on-stage tribute to Amy dedicating a rendition of ´Make You Feel My Love´ to the woman who inspired her to write her own songs. This way Amy’s beautiful music will live on forever.

WITH A background in family and matrimonial mediation, Life Coach Sara Bell helps Readers with their daily worries. If you are having difficulties with relationships, family, work or any other aspect of your life, then help is at hand.
Is she being disloyal? She is being spoilt I am an older gent, divorced for a number of years. I have been seeing a woman for nights out. I don’t feel there is anything romantically between us, but we are friends and see each other about twice a month. Recently she told me she’d been seeing other men, and I was a bit taken aback. I still don’t feel we are boyfriend and girlfriend material, but I didn’t expect that. If you don’t have any romantic inclinations for this woman, then where is the harm in her seeing other men, or for that matter, you seeing other women? She seems quite ok with the situation, but you had hoped she would remain loyal to you, even though you are not a couple. Dating when we are older can be a different thing entirely. When we are young, we move on very quickly if we are not attracted to someone, but as older people, we can find value in friendship and companionship. Does your annoyance in this lady-friend seeing other men mean that perhaps you did view your relationship as one of more than friends? Have a think and have a chat with her.

I am concerned about my niece. A lot of the attention is poured on her younger sister, who is very demanding. My sister dresses the girls exactly the same even though there is six years between them. This is to appease the younger girl, who makes a big fuss if she isn’t wearing older clothes like her sister. These sorts of things happen all the time, and the younger one even has ‘happy birthday’ sung to her, on her ‘sister’s’ birthday because she cries if she’s left out. I mentioned this once and pointed out that everyone gets their own birthday, and surely the attention should be on the person whose birthday it is, but I was shot down and told to mind my own business. Cultivating this kind of behaviour is asking for trouble down the line. It may cause resentment between the sisters in later years. You’ve passed comment and it was unwelcome, so you’ve done your best. You’d be surprised how many parents cosset their children in this way these days.

Legalisation of properties on rustic land built before 1975 by law Dear lawyer, I inherited a long time ago a property in a rustic area from my parents in Denia, Marina Alta, Alicante. The property is very old but is in good condition. Now I want to sell and I have been told that as it is on rural land and is built on less than 10,000 square meters and is illegal and I cannot sell it. Is this correct? Dear reader, thank you for your email. It must be said first of all, that it is very common for homes in non able to be urban land (rustic) to do not comply with the regulations, as they must in principle have a minimum plot of 10,000m2, not be than a maximum of homes in the area, etc. When they not meet these requirements, but the property has been built long ago, is possible that is over the deadline for the Town Hall to start a procedure to ask for the legalization of property and / or ask for a penalty for the works done without license, etc. If this is the case, it is understood that the property is outside the law ( fuera de ordenación), ie, it does not comply with the law, but the Town Hall can no longer sanction or apply for legalization, demolition, etc. These properties outside the law have a number of important limitations, i.e. in the works that can be performed on them, their value in the event of a compulsory sale, etc. In your case, you indicated that your property is very old, you should know that the Valencian Urban law, known as LOTUP (Law 5/2014 of 25 July, of the Generalitat, of Planning, Urbanism and Landscape of Valencia), in its Second Final Provision, named “status of some isolated buildings without license”, states that: Isolated buildings on non able to be urban land, built before the entry into force of Law 19/1975, of 2nd of May, amending the Law on Land Regime and Planning, and not having municipal urban license for this kind of area, shall be treated with the same regime as the buildings with license, as far as they were finished on that date, they still keep the use and the typological characteristics they had at the entry into force of the said Law, and as far as they are in legal situation of ruin. Therefore, it is possible that if your property maintains the use, and it is not in ruin, and was built before 1975, be assimilated to those properties with license, which is a kind of legalization of it by law. If you want to buy or sell a property in Spain. Contact us and we’ll help.

More Ways of Expressing the Future Last week we started on the future simple tense, and I think I was engaged in my usual activity of trying to kid everybody it was really easy. I do tend to do that, but you could call it simple optimism. I like to find the easy side of any bit of language and start from there, probably in the hope that you will be so overwhelmingly grateful that you won’t notice the difficult bit which I slip in towards the end. So the optimist’s view of the future simple tense is that all the endings are the same for all verbs (that’s pretty good you know) and, well yes, there are irregular verbs, but then they are the same ones that exist in the conditional tense (that’s the next one we’re going to do) so you get two for the price of one. Anyway, before we do that, I just wanted to make a general observation about the various options we have when talking about the future. I made the rather obvious point at the end of the last article that we don’t actually know the future, so when we say that this tense is used to talk about a “certain” future, this can only ever be true in theory. Reality is far more complicated. If I were to ask you something like: “What will your grandchildren be doing in ten years time?” it is highly unlikely that you would answer me with: “John will be a doctor and
Mary will be a vet. Wayne will have four children and Shirley will live in Australia”. No, you would probably answer like this: “Well, John would like to be a doctor, so we all hoping he’ll do that”. “Mary may be a vet but she might change her mind”. “Wayne looks as though he could end up with a big family and Shirley is going to move to Australia next year, if she can find a job there”. Even then it sounds a bit weird but I’m hoping that you get the point. Talking about the future is a complex matter, full of “ifs” and “buts”, “perhaps” and maybe” with a few “I hope” and “It looks as though” thrown in. So, when you want to talk about the future, you do not necessarily and automatically need the future simple tense. You might need the “future of intention” as already mentioned (ir + a + infinitive). Sometimes the present tense is sufficient (e.g. El tren sale a las 4 – “the train leaves at 4”) and sometimes we need our next tense, the “conditional” also called the “future conditional”. This tense is the equivalent in English of “would” instead of
“will”. “I will go” (iré) is future simple. “I would go” (iría) is future conditional. Why is it called conditional? because its use implies the existence of a condition. For example: “I would go to the concert … if I had time ; if I had enough money; if my parents let me...” Having time, money or permission from ones parents are the “conditions” upon which depends whether I can go to the concert or not. This tense if really easy (really!) to form in Spanish as it is so similar to the future tense. The use of it is somewhat more complicated, but also there are a few tricks to get round it. I’ll have to leave that till next week though. I hope you can contain your excitement.

I love the smell of vinyl in the morning (Apologies to Colonel Kilgore) by
Chris Ashley
Writer & Broadcaster
AGEING is no territory for namby-pamby wimps, where the mere act of waking up with no candles, flowers or relations around you is a bonus. My day to day memory is that of a geriatric goldfish, however I can remember long distance stuff. Jan.1956 my first game watching Brighton beat the dread Crystal Palace 5-0. Circa 1965 the registration number of my first car in Australia – ALW 821 - a huge Standard Vanguard. No air-con in this gas guzzler, the fuel gauge needle went round so fast it acted as a fan. The first record I bought – 1958 ‘Rave On’ Buddy Holly – 78 rpm Coral Q72325. Yes! Yes! I know this anal behaviour can be tedious (just so you know I do colour coordinate my sock drawer). Around this era the old 10” shellac 78’s were being fazed out for the newfangled 7”vinyl 45’s. When I bought ‘Rave On’ it was a titchy 7” job, but we only had a one speed sit up & beg phonograph with a big flaring horn – all we needed was Nipper the HMV dog looking winsome up front. We had a great hairy ill -tempered mutt called Rasputin who drooled incessantly into the horn all over Perry Como & his ‘Magic Moments’. However needs must – sticking on the record, winding the handle, dropping the needle onto Buddy’s finest - problem is 45 revs at 78 revs sounds like Pinky & Perky on crack. So with the inventiveness, that Thomas Edison would have admired, I stuck my thumb on the turntable to slow it down which then made Buddy sound like a cross between Darth Vader & a hippo with the dry-heaves. After a week of this cacophony mum coughed up 11 guineas on the never-never for a 4 speed Dansette record player (what’s with 16 & 2/3rds rpm?). Still got some old vinyl today, but stupidly in 1977 I turned one into a frisbee because my po-faced prog rock persona thought it was irrelevant tripe. ‘Twas the Sex Pistols ‘God Save The Queen’ on the A&M label until it was withdrawn with most copies destroyed due to establishment rancour (HRH’s Silver Anniversary). Mind you it didn’t stop tricky Dickie Branson releasing it 2 months later on Virgin - & he still gets knighted – Bah! In 2006 a rare surviving A&M original sold for £13,000. I was gutted & as for prog rock, bet you wouldn’t get 13 large for a Moody Blues cast off. Your faltering memories always welcome; ashleybobble@hotmail.com

Dispute over ‘life-saving’ drug BREAST CANCER patients in the UK are being denied a 43p a day treatment because of an NHS funding row, claims charity Breast Cancer Now. by Jack Troughton It estimates 27,000 women fail to receive the osteoporosis medication which can prevent the disease spread into the bone – because of uncertainty over who foots the bill. Bisphosphonates are low cost drugs that strengthen the bone and prevent the spread of cancer. Research suggests they cut the risk of cancer spreading within 10 years by 18% and the risk of death from the disease to 14.7%. The treatment is estimated to cost 43p daily per patient for the medication, consultation time and subsequent monitoring. However, funding is in dispute and campaigners say it is unclear whether hospital trusts or local commissioning groups should pay and Breast Cancer Now discovered three-quarters of oncologists said they cannot prescribe the treatment because of the confusion. The charity believes of 35,700 women recommended the treatment, 27,000 did not receive it; and it estimates “an extra” 1,180 women a year “could be prevented from dying from breast cancer”. Top oncologists say the “simple and safe” treatment should be made available “as a matter of urgency”. They argue it saved lives and reduced “needless expenditure” on unnecessary tests and the “ever increasing costs of treating women with secondary breast cancer.” A spokesman for NHS England said a report included the recommendation over the use of the treatment and it was working to “realise the ambitions” of the paper.

Happy school days VOLUNTEERS FROM the ADAPT Association of San Pedro are helping spread the word as they help students in the area learn English. by Jack Troughton A total of 17 ADAPT members are currently working in five Murcia schools following a successful scheme that is said to have gone from “strength to strength”. Six years ago the society was approached to assist in teaching English and rose to the challenge – members joining teachers in the classroom. In the early days, volunteers only attended summer school in the area, helping youngsters learn English nursery rhymes and board games. However, they are now helping the San Pedro and Lo Pagan schools of Los Pinos, Las Esperanzas, Maspalomas, Nuestra Señora del Carmen, and Villa Alegria. Eithne Lawler and Nicky Kehoe were the coordinators of the School Monitor Project since it was launched but have stepped down because of relocation and work commitments – Carol Beech is to replace them. President of ADAPT Janet Pierce presented Eithne and Nicky with bouquets (pictured) and thanked them for their dedication and for their tireless efforts during a thoroughly enjoyable task. ADAPT meets in the Pensionista Centre, Lo Pagan, at 10:30am on the first Saturday of the month. New members are always welcome, visit www.adaptsanpedro.com for more information.

IT IS still possible to be surprised by car design As I glance at the Vauxhall Zafira Tourer I notice that there is something a little different about the rear bumper and it’s not because I’ve reversed into something… In the centre it looks to me as if it can be pushed to reveal a step, such as you might find on a conversion for a disabled motorist. It is only when I lift the boot lid that I notice a lever and wondering what it does, I pull it. This releases the Flex-Fix integrated bike carrier – what a clever idea. I have never come across a vehicle with such a facility. This

is a gadget I’d expect Q in the James Bond films to dream up! It’s certainly not a gimmick either because I can see how the active family that would typically purchase this vehicle would want to transport their bicycles when they go away on an adventure. And this for me gives the Zafira another dimension from other people movers. This third generation revamp looks slick and appealing from the outside and the bright red finish of the test model certainly stands out. It is also surprising that despite being a sizeable seven-seater it feels small to drive. If there is difficulty reversing a helpful camera automatically appears in the central display together with helpful beeps that sound when manoeuvring into a tight gap. The third row of seats is nestled underneath the boot and put into position by simply pulling a loop on the back. It’s a comfortable vehicle with plenty of room. That boot is large enough
to accommodate a variety of paint tins and other rubbish including a large gas bottle that needs taking to the tip. When the doors are opened at night the interior is lit up with red lights incorporated into the trim, making it feel quite spaceship-like. For a people mover it’s fast, hitting 60mph from standstill in under 11 seconds and it will almost return 70mpg; which means that it is possible to travel 150 miles without even using an eighth of a tank. There is engine stop/start, which although I am used to these days does perplex me a little. The Zafira has a low bite on the clutch making me wonder whether I have stalled the vehicle. Another issue is the electric handbrake; of which I am not a great fan. You see there’s an automatic hill brake that the driver must put their trust in and I find this difficult. No sooner has the accelerator been pushed and the brake releases and as a result I find myself over revving, which isn’t ideal for economy.
