A word from JT THE EU referendum race is run. We are officially in a brave new world and the whole affair will now go under the microscope, taking us from the gilded promises of politicians to the explanations of what it all means and how it will or won’t affect the Euro in your pocket. Possibly. Here at RTN Towers everyone was delighted to learn David Beckham had thrown his cap in with Team Remain. Not sure if such a move actually affected the polls but it’s good to know he is taking an interest even if we are in the middle of that other little bit of summer fun known as the European Championships. Teamwork is also playing a big part in helping get a stranded holidaymaker home. Neil Ellerington fell from a hotel balcony and suffered multiple injuries. Team Expat is using social media to try and raise the cash to get him back to his family – the links are with this week’s story. Sadly, there is another lesson behind the headlines of Neil’s remarkable escape. It underlines why the British Consulate and the travel industry constantly advises people to take out travel insurance; the family had no cover…but hindsight is a wonderful thing.

No news from the Priors Inheritance Despite favourable suggestions by the Mayor of Vera Tax Eased following the recent public demonstration in favour of the Priors, who lost their home to the bulldozers in January 2008, no solution has been reached. by Lenox Napier There were broad hints that the Town Hall would quickly reach an accommodation with the couple, but their lawyer confirmed earlier this week that so far, no undertaking had been offered to help resolve the issue. Currently, a settlement of around half the value of the claim from Len and Helen Prior, has been ruled by the court, despite their legal costs approaching 200,000€. However, the Town Hall has appealed, apparently under advice from the insurance company. So, failing any fresh agreement, Len and Helen must continue to live in their garage located in a peaceful area beyond the town and wait, once again, for events.
There has been a great variation in inheritance tax payable across Spain, depending on the region where one lives. More than a few beneficiaries have even refused to accept a settlement as the tax – for example on a building – was simply prohibitive. The highest rate for inheritance tax has long belonged to Andalucía, and in what might be considered as a piece of electioneering, the Junta de Andalucía has announced that it is easing the tax on inheritance to more bearable levels, with the first 250,000€ now free from tax from parents to children or other direct family members.

Make friends and learn the lingo JANE MANN and husband Walter enjoy life after becoming part of an international community after making their move to the sun. by Jack Troughton They live in Pinar de Campoverde – just inland from Pilar de la Horadada - and spent eight years researching the perfect location for their new home. And having moved full time about 30 months ago, Jane and Walter both feel they have to make time for fellow residents in the village; Jane is an active member of the local church and Walter is now Vice-President of Pinar de Campoverde Residents Association. “We found the town was vibrant and there was always something happening,” said Jane, one of a team of expats recruited by the British Consulate in Alicante to be a local ambassador – a scheme designed to share experiences and advice to help others in Spain or planning the move. “Making friends is important – we walked into the ‘vecinos office’ of the neighbourhood association; Walter used to design websites and ended up doing the website for the association...he still does.” Jane added: “We were determined not to come here and just close the front door and sit by the pool. We are learning Spanish; you have to make an effort to learn the language and it was top of our list, it is very important. RESEARCH “We have been here two-and-a-half years. Research is important but we perhaps went over the top a little bit. We spent eight years coming out twice a year and deliberately picked a month that was not high season because we wanted to know what the town was like; was it shuttered up during winter. If you live here, you don’t want a dead town.” She said they had already rejected the Balearics because it was too expensive and damp during winter, and found Malaga too over-developed. “We settled on the south east corner of Spain and used to come out; we started at La Manga and stayed there and over the years drove further up; we went to every town and every village,” added Jane. “We found every time we came on holiday, we didn’t want to go home. We finally settled on the area where we now live and came out and stayed five or six times over a period of three or four years and concentrated on that region.” She advised people to do their research and rent before they bought a home. “We didn’t need to because we had already done our homework; we made a list of our requirements and when we looked at properties, I carried a compass in my bag to check the

AN ILLEGAL Costa Blanca family-run residential home became a “lucrative” business for a British couple who “charmed” elderly English victims, it was claimed this week. by JACK TROUGHTON THE FAMILY of one of the fi rst residents say the “main concern” about 73-year-old Pauline Reynolds – who died in June last year – was how the husband and wife team took control of her fi nances. And they allege that their mother, who lived at the home from October 2013, complained the couple also listened in on her private ‘phone calls via baby monitors in a bid to control what she told people about the care home. Daughter Maureen Bennett, from Wakefield, said the house in Valver de Bajo, just outside Santa Pola, was “just a family home” but “it was like Fort Knox”. She said: “I think they started off by taking people in for respite. Mum went there for just a week once, it was her taster. “I think mum was the first actual long term resident and then they realised how lucrative it could actually be.” Earlier this month, the husband and wife, both aged 59, and their 25-yearold daughter, were arrested for fraud relating to the home, said by police to have been open about three years. CHARGE The Guardia Civil said residents were charged between 2,500€ and 3,000€ per month and five rooms were almost always occupied although carers were not qualified. Detectives said the elderly “apparently received dignified treatment” although on occasion some were shouted at by the owners. However, it was said the couple requested documentation and property deeds for safe keeping - and tried to convince pensioners to let them inherit. It was alleged the daughter, who worked in pharmacy, targeted potential residents - British people who lived in the area, who did not speak Spanish, and with few family ties. Maureen, who has a holiday home in Spain, said mum Pauline and dad Keith moved to Spain in 2003 but when her father passed away in March 2005, her mother decided to remain in Spain and bought the cemetery ‘niche’ next to her husband to be interred alongside him. She said in August 2008 Pauline suffered a mild stroke and went back to the UK for treatment and to recuperate, returning to Spain in 2009. As her health deteriorated the family employed carers to help out. “This was where she first met the wife. They did not particularly get on as they were both strong characters and each had quite a dislike of the other. “However, the husband, who was introduced initially to do some gardening, was very charming to Pauline and it became a regular occurrence that he took her shopping every Saturday and they had lunch out. He then became involved in her care...he was
Pauline Reynolds very charming to her and she liked him and his company. COMPANION “They used this to their advantage when they persuaded her to move in with them so they could offer 24 hour care and also companionship.” Maureen said she later discovered her mother paid 5,000€ as a ‘tenancy deposit’ which she believes was used to build an ensuite bathroom and paid for new wardrobes and blinds for her bedroom and sitting room; also taking her own furniture to the home. She added: “She was happy enough at first but then she obviously saw her true colours; the husband stopped taking her out and she was left with the wife doing her care and they often had arguments. When I rang to speak to her, mum would often say ‘I can’t tell you now, they’re listening in...I’ll tell you later’.” However, she said when she took her mother out; Pauline did not want to talk about the situation. Maureen continued: “They would often take the TV control away from her and mum loved her TV, it’s all she did. “I would often ring to be told she was sleeping and when I was in Spain and visited mum, we were rarely left alone and we couldn’t speak because mum said they had baby monitors and listened in to her conversations.” She said the “main concern” was how the couple took control of Pauline’s finances. “She would just given them her card and ask them to draw money out for her. On one occasion, when mum was ill and couldn’t go out and needed no money, two cash withdrawals were made in one week.” Maureen said the family then enforced a power of attorney; transferring care money into an English account and warning her mother not to give them cash – even having to block the couple’s plan to take her on a cruise with them at Pauline’s expense, “I don’t think they were very pleased about this.”

Mobile fraud gang arrested
GUARDIA CIVIL officers have arrested 17 people for supplying illegal phone contracts. by Angela Baker Operation KRAKE began when members of the public complained that they had fallen victim to the groups scam. The officers investigating discovered a shop in the town of Rus, Jaén, Andalusia, which was run by members of the gang where the fraudulent contracts and phones were being issued illegally. Problems arose when the victims attempted to use the guarantees given or contacted the official distributor to make amendments to their contract, only to find that there was no agreement. The illegal activities involved the group, using various locations, offer-
ing the victims contracts and phones at discounted rates and obtaining personal account information. This information enable them to obtain other phones in their names which were then sold in the shop. It is estimated that fraud could have affected thousands of people in the provinces of Jaen, Almeria and Huelva, with many still not being aware. Officers searched six premises in Rus, Ubeda (Jaen), Roquetas de Mar (Almería) and Jabugo (Huelva), and seized 224 mobile phones with an estimated value of 70,000 euros, 890 phone cards, six computers and 6,000 euros in cash. The 17 members of the gang have been charged with crimes of conspiracy, fraud and forgery.
Almeria’s ruined castle
The Junta de Andalucia has turned the central plaza within the old Moorish castle ‘Almeria Alcazaba’ into a concert stadium – at the cost of drilling various metal supports into already weakened walls. Last year, the Junta planned to build a padel-
tennis court in the Roman amphitheatre in Mérida; a move eventually withdrawn after massive criticism from the public. However, the politicians have gone ahead with Almeria project despite a recent study describing the stronghold as in ‘a dramatic and lamentable situation, with
a serious deterioration of the walls and interior buildings’. It seems that the Department of Culture from the Junta is spending ever less money on the upkeep of Almería’s most important relic. “Our leaders worry about the number of visitors to the monument, as if that mattered. It’s the presence of this beautiful castle, high above our city, what matters: not the number of tickets sold,” said a local politician this week.

SHAKESPEARE CAME alive for more than 800 guests at the Queen´s 90th Birthday Party at the British Ambassador´s Residence in Madrid last Thursday night. The celebration was a Midsummer Night´s Dream as Puck and Bottom posed for photographs with people on the lawn and star-crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet played out the balcony scene to huge applause. Playwright William – 2016 marks the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death – also wandered through the crowd armed with a quill. Tragedy was also remembered as a two minute silence was staged to remember murdered Labour MP Jo Cox, the 42-year-old mother of two, killed earlier in the day. She was fatally shot and stabbed when about to open a constituency surgery in the West Yorkshire town of Birstall.
“RTN and the Costa Blanca News were both delighted to be invited to the garden party by Ambassador Simon Manley and his wife Mrs Maria Isabel Manley.” And, fittingly, it was very much a celebration of all things British. Guests were greeted by a Union Jack painted Mini at the entrance, and beer, gin and tonics, cheese and other party food provided a taste of the UK. Guests toasted Her Majesty’s health with champagne and were also invited to taste a colourfully decorated birthday cake baked for a very special occasion.

Seven year “Poniente” Missing person case concludes THE COURTS of Almeria have completed their investigation in political corruption in El Ejido, seven years later. by Angela Baker The case began in April 2009 with 65 people, including the former mayor, Juan Enciso, being accused of political and corporate corruption to the value of over 90 million euros of public funds. On Monday Judge Jesús Miguel Hernández Columna dismissed thirteen of those under investigation, including four because they had passed away, with the remaining being charged with the offences. The court ruling against the 52 remaining defendants for their alleged links, in different degrees with the alleged crimes, was that proceedings now go to the prosecutor within 60 days for trial. They are charged with bribery, influence peddling, forgery of a commercial document, money laundering, embezzlement of public funds, against public finances and negotiations prohibited
public officials. The offences are detailed as occurring between 2002 and 2009 when overbilling by two business groups occurred resulting in huge profits for non-existent services. Companies owned by the former
mayor would have benefited indirectly through the business groups with the judge believing that Enciso received 372,113 euros. It is believed that income tax fraud amounting to 13,803,553.37 euros and 2,475,916.32 euros in VAT also occurred.

Spanish air traffi c strike announced by CAROLINE TYSZKA AIR TRAFFIC controllers in Madrid have announced a two day strike for next week. The announcement that the Spanish controllers will be staging a two day action on 28th and 29th June comes after passengers have faced months of disruption caused by their colleagues in France abandoning their posts several times. Ineco, who currently employ the controllers, has been reported as making changes to the workers employment contracts which has resulted in the 47 air traffi c staff fearing for their future. However to further complicate the issue Aena has put out to tender the management service platform of the Madrid-Barajas Adolfo Suรกrez Airport run by the SDP. The SDP (El Servicio de Direcciรณn de Plataforma) has been responsible for directing the movement of aircraft on the ground since 2011 but tenders for the new contracts are due on the 27th June, the day before the strike. It is feared that this midweek strike will aff ect thousands of travellers at one of the busiest times of the year particularly as schools have fi nished for the summer and families begin their holidays.

Demand to end Bullfighting FIVE HUNDRED people joined Deputy Mayor Ángel Pavón and Councillors Marisol Moreno and Victor Dominguez to demand an end to the bullfighting held every year to celebrate San Juan in Alicante. by Rhiannan Bell
Various animal rights associations marched last Saturday through the streets. The protest toured the city and culminated in a manifesto being read at a rally. Protesters held banners with slogans such as ‘Alicante for a Bloodless Hogueras’, ‘Torture: Not Art, Not Culture’ and ‘For Torture there is no Debate’. Councillor for Animal Protection Marisol Moreno, insisted they will push a public consultation to “determine what Alicanti-
nos want to use the Bullring for”. Mr Pavón said that it was not within the local authority´s power to prohibit or authorise bullfights, but to decide the use as to what municipal buildings were intended. He pledged to “accept the result of the consultation whatever it is”, but stressed that the Hogueras, which are the official fiestas of the city, “don’t have to be linked to the bullfighting.” The current use of the bullring is valid until 2017, so it would be after that time other uses for buildings could be decided.

Noche San Juan celebrated
THE NOCHE de San Juan, a celebration of the shortest night and longest day of the year, was celebrated up and down the coast last night, June 23rd, including Benidorm. by Caroline Tyszka The annual event which marked the summer solstice is full of pagan traditions with fire and water being the main themes. Thousands gathered on their local beaches to mark the occasion. With bonfires, where allowed as many towns had restrictions due to the current high fire alerts. Tradition says if you jump over the fire three times you can burn away any problems and cleanse your spirit. At the stroke of midnight, again according to tradition, many ran into the sea believing it would wash away any evil spirits and rejuvenate their body and soul. Towns in the north of the region celebrating includedJavea, La Cala de Finestrat, Albir and Alicante. In the south of the region the Torrevieja Playa del Cura celebrated as well as beaches along the Almeria coastline. Additional TRAM services were laid on so that people could travel to their chosen beach without having to worry about parking vehicles and drinking. Benidorm, for the first time, threw a party on the beach as businesses on the frontline, members of the Ociobal association, got together to host the celebrations.
New blue wine made in Spain BRITISH WINE consumers will soon be able to order online a new wine, made from Spanish grapes that is blue! Gik blue wine was created by six young entrepreneurs with the aim of revitalising the Spanish wine industry which they believe is extremely traditional. Using different varieties of red and white grapes from around Spain the group found that anthocyanin, a pigment from the red grapes’ skin, and indigotine, which is derived from plants, gave the wine its bluish colouring. At 11.5 percent alcohol they suggest that it is ideally suited for being drunk with sushi, nachos or pasta carbonara. The producers say that 70,000 bottles have already been sold within Spain and that when it is launched to the English market a bottle will cost around £8. One of the creators told reporters that “none of us liked traditional wine, so we decided to start a little revolution by creating a sweet, easy to drink and blue wine.”

‘National Treasure’ comes alive by Jack Troughton JOYCE GRENFELL’S talent to amuse audiences comes to life with three performances of her work in Almeria by The Ladies Who Care Productions next month. The group is performing ‘Just Joyce’ to raise money for local charities and offer two afternoon and one evening performances using three voices to deliver some of the monologues and songs of the legendary performer. Joyce Grenfell died in 1979 was acclaimed a National British Treasure’ and her wit remains unsurpassed – not a swear word in sight, just warm, funny and poignant writing. One of the UK’s best-loved entertainers, she achieved success as a writer and performer at a time it was unusual for a woman of her social background to work; bringing audiences finely-tuned observational comedy and while she takes a satirical look at the lower, middle and minor aristocratic classes of a past era, the characters are still relevant. Just Joyce is being performed in Bedar, Vera Playa, and Albox, by Janet Franklin, Chrissie Cremore and Sally Miller,
and directed by Jacqueline Welby. Reviewer Kay Kay went to a rehearsal and said she was giving “glowing references” after being left “in awe of the talent that our small region offers”. She wrote: “It was said that Grenfell’s timing was ‘better than a Swiss clock’...I would say the same of this trio of performers. They never miss a beat!” On Sunday 10th July at 3.30pm, Just Joyce is performed at La Casa de las Tortugas in Bedar. Tickets are 6€. Refreshments are available and proceeds will go to local causes including first aid equipment for the Proteccion Civil. Box Office: Olive Properties in Bedar and Bedar Town Hall. The show is performed at 7pm on Monday 11th July at Restaurante The Bistro in Vera Playa. Tickets are 12€ including a plate supper. The proceeds go to ODAT (One Dog At a Time). Walking on the moon MOON WALKERS took giant steps for the MACS – the Mojacar Area Cancer Support Group – on Sunday to raise over 6,000€ for the charity. The third annual MACS Moonwalk attracted around 100 walkers taking park either the 10km or 5km event – the longer walk starting at 9pm from Tito’s Chiringuito to Big Fat Momma’s Bar and Restaurant and back; the shorter walk from Big Fat Momma’s to Tito’s. At the finish, everyone enjoyed sandwiches made by MACS volunteers Maggie Lake and Lut Vercouteren; entertainment for the night was donated by Kay Frances. RTN was told: “The majority of walkers obtained sponsors beforehand and there were collection tins and buckets available for the public to donate en route. “There were walkers of all ages and nationalities, some of whom wore fancy dress and, it has to be noted, that the public who were out enjoying a walk on the fabulous new ‘paseo’ and the surrounding area and those in bars and restaurants, really got into the spirit of the appeal and joined in the fun and banter. “The town hall very kindly supplied water for the walker; bottles were available at Titos, Pachamama and Big Fat Momma’s – who also very kindly supplied fresh watermelon. The town hall also provided an extra police presence, thus insuring the safety of the walkers.” MACS has toasted the evening as “a huge success” both financially “and for the community, supported by volunteers, local businesses and organisations. Provisional figures show 3,709€ was collected in cash with a further 2,459€ pledged. The first Moonwalk in 2014 raised 4,000€ and last year’s event 3,800€. MACS has charity shops throughout the region. Anyone wanting more information about the shops, general inquiries, or how to volunteer can call 634 328 334 or email macscancersupport@live.co.uk. Anyone needing support or with a loved one affected by cancer needing MACs support, can call 634 656 555.
ALMERIA ANIMAL charity PAWS hopes for big results with a new campaign to get people to donate a single coin – a Euro or a pound. Animal lovers are being targeted with a simple message, “Donate one Euro or pound”, as the charity hopes to boost its coffers and help animals. PAWS is located in the Mojacar and Los Gallardos area, and since 1989 has been helping stray, abandoned, and unwanted animals. It was formerly registered as a charity in 1996. And the charity’s President Karen Polansky said since it was founded the “team” had worked tirelessly to help animals in Southern Spain. More than 6,000 dogs, puppies, cats and kittens had been able to find “forever homes” over the 27 years. “To continue the good work, PAWS needs your support,” she said in an appeal. “Spain has been hit hard by the economic crisis, and it becomes more and more difficult for PAWS to fulfil all the tasks that are so badly needed. “PAWS knows the smallest donation can add up to a big result in the form of a happy, healthy, full life for an animal found in a riverbed, on a building site, under a bridge, or in a cardboard box at the shelter gate.” Karen thanked everyone in advance for their “generosity and kindness” in helping animals in need. The brief, yet exceedingly Independent Republic of Albox by LENOX NAPIER At the end of the 19th century, Albox was a town unknown to much of Spain, and therefore to the world. Until 1891, that is. The nearest railway station was a two-day trip and an outdated industry of wool and fabrics for farmers made it possible that many families managed to live frugally. Nevertheless, the population - close to 11,000 people - meant the town was booming and its wealthier citizens could spend time in one of the two casinos that the town boasted, or enjoying a show in the theatre. At the time the Mayor was José Antonio Mirón Jimenez, remembered by historians as ‘conservative and influential’. Local elections complied with the requirements of the time, that is, they were heavily controlled by the local poobah, whose motto would be: “For friends we have the favour and for enemies we have the law.” A policy which worked very well for Don José Antonio. The mayor (they used to call people like this ‘El Cacique’) ruled thanks to the vote of the wealthiest residents. In particular, to a coterie of 54 persons, who thanks to the specialized voting system of the times were all those who dictated who would occupy the Mayor’s office. But in 1890, a new national party called the Partido Liberal Fusionista revolutionised the political landscape by introducing universal suffrage to Spain. All men over 25 years could vote in the elections (women would have to wait until 1931). Coinciding with the modification of the voting rules, a humble resident of the Albox, Andrés Pio Fernández, ran as a candidate for the elections of February 1891. The conservative mayor never believed that his opponent could pose a threat. However, he was quite wrong and was soundly defeated. The people speak, although their voice is not always accepted with pleasure But then, the morning after the election day, a storm of people surged through the streets waving sticks, guns and swords. Yet, worse than the weapons they were carrying were their banners: “Long Live the Federal Republic of Albox!”. At the head of the mob was none other than the defeated former mayor.

Don José Antonio and his accomplices proclaimed a “universal declaration of independence and a brand-new country” which would have “nothing” to do “with Central Government in Madrid”. The experiment, based and inspired by recent events occurring in Cartagena (they declared independence from Spain on July 1st 1873 and entered into a five month war with Madrid) didn’t last long in Albox. After two days “of terror”, the provincial Governor realized that what looked like a joke had little humour about it, so he proceeded to send the Civil Guard troops to regain control. Twenty one rebels were detained, although they were soon released. It was the end of the first - and short-lived - Federal Republic of Albox.

Asian and a Briton - was approved by the Berja Town Hall in 2010 and the land was acknowledged - twelve hectares and its own well - despite belonging to a local captain of industry. And the subsidy for 800,000€ duly arrived in 2012; with the compliments of the government.

WITCHCRAFT AND the Spanish Inquisition play a central role in a new exhibition, ‘El Martillo de las Brujas’, being staged in Mojacar by artist Carol Solar until 12th July. by Jack Troughton Mojacar Factory Art, located in the town’s Parque Comercial, hosts the event as it remains at the forefront of contemporary art. Carol was born in Santiago, Chile and now lives in Madrid, where she completed her studies and developed her craft. Her latest exhibition is inspired by the book “Malleus Maleficarum”, written by religious inquisitors during the Renaissance period to serve as a guide during the witch hunt which spread throughout Europe. The artist works in textiles using delicate stitches. The exhibition addresses the traditions of witch-
craft and highlights the consequences of the persecution that countless men and women were subjected to between the XV and XVIII centuries by the Inquisition. And Mojácar, true to its tradition of hosting art and its creators, continues with both municipal and private exhibitions in the town’s galleries throughout the year. Mojácar is one of the towns with the most galleries and organized artistic activities in Spain. The Valparaiso and Fama Foundations complement and support the creation of art in all its forms, working in collaboration with Mojácar Town Council to exhibit and promote culture throughout the municipality and all over the world.
Musical celebration
CELEBRATING INTERNATIONAL Music Day, Mojácar village had a number of acts playing through the evening and night of June 21st. This was a new idea to help promote the village: the beautiful cubist mess of square white houses on the last hill of the Sierra Cabrera as it tumbles down to the Mediterranean. In the main plaza, and in a number of smaller squares and forgotten corners, musicians gathered, anxious to play. Some were very good, and the crowd was appreciative. What a setting: small bars with a few tables dominated by acoustic guitars, violins, trombones and singers. Next year, organisers promised, there will be more - but keep it simple: no big electric bands for the Mojácar Pueblo International Music Day.

Holiday home thieves snared by Rhiannan Bell Alicante Guardia Civil arrested six Spanish nationals last Thursday alleged to be behind a flood of burglaries from holiday homes in the area. The group specialised in thefts from homes where owners, often foreigners, spent long periods away. And is believed not all thefts have yet been reported - and authorities expect more to be discovered as owners arrive for the holiday season. The gang has triggered fear in the community because of the force used to enter homes and the scale of damage caused inside properties. The robberies were so frequent and effective that several neighbouring Torrevieja communities created a page on a social network to exchange information to try and identify the culprits. The highly organised gang had an ability to communicate and monitor the surrounding area during its operations. Staking out targets before the robberies, they also established checkpoints at the entrances to the residential areas, and lookouts were placed on rooftops to warn of any danger. The thieves used gloves, masks and wore plain clothing so not stand out, to prevent being be identified by potential witnesses or security cameras. Searches of the gang’s property resulted in various weapons being found including baseball bats, crossbows, knives and swords as well as clothing, binoculars, walkie-talkies and other accessories. In addition to the theft of homes, they also committed thefts from garages and in a single night robbed seven in Torrevieja. In Ciudad Quesada-Rojales they ransacked a house and also stole a Mercedes car worth more than 95,000₏.

Gay Pride crossing Wrong Suena Torrevieja - The Torrevieja Dream Party - has requested that the distinctive rainbow flag flutters in Torrevieja and Torrelamata on World LGTB Pride Day and a zebra crossing be painted with the rainbow colours which represent the Gay Pride movement. by Rhiannan Bell The Party, represented by two councillors, Pablo Samper and Alejandro Blanco, continues to support the initiative that took place last year when the flag of the gay pride movement was displayed on the balcony of City Hall. This year they are also urging the rest of the city government to support the ‘pride day’ on Tuesday, again by hoisting the rainbow flag from the balcony of City Hall and at Torrelamata. The painting of street crossing points has already taken place in some Spanish cities and a spokesman from the party said: “We want to express our emphatic condemnation of the act that happened in Orlando and the wave of violence that has been occurring throughout our country. “We understand that it is vital to visualize and involve citizens with small symbols throughout our city to contribute to the promotion of respect, equality, diversity and tolerance amongst everybody. “

The Guardia Civil has arrested three drivers this year for driving in the wrong direction under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The first incident took place last February when the driver, a British national was stopped for driving the wrong way on the CT-32 (Cartagena AP-7). In March, officers arrested another driver of Spanish man, after he drove 7 kilometres in the wrong direction along the A-30 Albacete-Cartagena road, five times over the blood alcohol limit. And the third arrest took place this month when a 49year-old Spanish van driver was heading along the A-7 in Murcia against oncoming traffic. He had driven 11 kilometres in the opposite direction after consuminng three times the permitted amount of alcohol.

Dog dies in transit to Spanish new life by Caroline Tyszka A FAMILY is in mourning after their beloved dog died travelling from the UK to meet them as they looked for a new home in Spain. Skye, a 16-month-old Husky/ German Shepherd cross, was collected in Benfleet, UK earlier in the month and was due to be reunited with his owner, Tanya Louise, 9 days later. Tanya had travelled with her partner James to Malaga on Monday, June 6th looking in Malaga for a home for them and their seven year old son with Skye expected to arrive on 13th June. The Joni Fitz Distribution company who had arranged for Skye to travel gave no indication that anything untoward had happened until Tanya rang them to get a confirmed meeting time. Tanya messaged the driver saying how excited they were that Skye was nearly back with them, and the driver replied “I
will call you in twenty minutes.” She said: “An hour later he called. The minute I answered I heard something had happened in his voice. He said “I’ve lost your dog”. I just cried and put the phone down.” They were told that the dog had escaped from the company’s local warehouse the previous day and the family immediately went to search for Skye, staying out all night but could not find him. Skye’s body was eventually found in a ditch with a vet saying that he had been dead for at least seven days. Tanya told a local reporter: “Skye was my best friend. We had the most exciting walks together in the UK and I was looking forward to having evening walks in Spain together. All I want now is the truth.” A spokesman for the company said due to a family bereavement they were unable to give any more details as Tanya and James said they will not give up until they find out exactly what happened.

Firearms seized
AN ARSENAL of handguns acquired abroad were imported into Spain and reactivated to become deadly weapons. by Rhiannan Bell Purchased abroad, the pistols and revolvers did not meet European safety standards and had been made safe but criminals restored the weapons to be able to fire live ammunition. Guardia Civil officers in Operation Vulpes, which covered 14 Spanish provinces, have arrested 13 people belonging to a criminal organisation dedicated to the purchase and sale of firearms. The gang were later charged with crimes of illegal possession of weapons, tank ammunition and drug trafficking. And during the operation, which was conducted in two phases, 123 firearms and more than 8,000 metallic cartridges were seized, among other equipment. The head of the organisation
resided in Murcia, and illegally imported arms into the country via postal parcels. Internationally, the acquisition of non-functioning weapons was said to be booming because purchasers do not require permits to buy them. However, with the knowledge of how to make them fire again, criminals, terrorist groups or organised crime gangs use this loop hole for illicit trafficking - which in turn can have a devastating impact on public safety. The investigation began last year when the Guardia Civil was alerted to the purchase of detonating weapons abroad by Spanish citizens. The size of this operation became apparent when more than 350 weapons were alleged to have been acquired by the criminal network. A spokesman said the success of the investigation prevented the large number of weapons from reaching the black market, with unpredictable and serious consequences.

The Pilgrims of Bedar Eileen Kilmurry, a Bédar resident, is joined again this year by Paramedic Jackie Windsor to walk the last part of their journey along the pilgrims’ Way of Saint James, ‘El Camino de Santiago’. by MarianMay Simpson This historic journey was the greatest pilgrimage and dates back to the Middle Ages to honour the apostle St James, whose tomb lies below the Romanesque cathedral in the city of Santiago de Compostella in the province of La Coruña, northwest Spain. Eileen began her pilgrimage in 2013 choosing El Camino Francés which begins at Saint Jean Pied de Port on the French side of the Pyrenees and totals about 800 kms. In 2014, the pilgrims picked up the journey from Roncesvalles, on the Spanish side of the Pyrenees, ending in León. And this year in July, the two women will walk the remainder of El Camino from León, until they reach the shrine of Saint James, at the pilgrimage site at Santiago de Compostela, a total of 330 kms. Modern travellers, like the two Bédar pilgrims, join and leave El Camino, at different points, taking their ‘Credencial’ pilgrims passport with them to be officially stamped, as proof that they have completed the journey, and by following the official route. The holder of the stamped Credencial will receive a ´Compostela´, a certificate of completion of the pilgrimage, by the pilgrim’s office in Santiago. Eileen and Jackie will leave Bédar on 29th June, travelling by train from Almeria to León and begin their planned journey, aiming to walk about 21 kms each day over sixteen days, arriving at Santiago de Compostela on 16th July.
Each year the pair, who fund the whole trip themselves, has used this journey as a way to raise money for local causes and have decided to look for sponsorship in order to buy First Aid equipment for the newly formed Protección Civil group in Bédar and to support Asprodalba. Anyone wishing to sponsor this pilgrimage, please reply to me, MarianMay Simpson, at mmaysimpson@hotmail.com or contact her at the Town Hall, Bédar.

Man took videos of children A SPANISH man has been arrested and charged for having videos and images of young children in Valencia. The 43-year-old from Torrent, Valencia, came to the attention of the Guardia Civil following around forty complaints from the parents who said he had filmed the inside football dressing rooms. Operation BETENASA began in May of this year following the discovery of two video cameras hidden in the dressing room of a sports club. The accused is believed to have placed the cameras by pretending to carry out maintenance work in the changing rooms and then kept the recordings, which featured several clubs and their young members. A search of his property found computer equipment with more than 320,000 files stored and officers seized this as well as mobile phones and a vehicle. The operation came just in time to prevent further images being made as the accused was about to start working as a summer camp monitor.

Cartagena firebug
A witness maintains he watched a man start a blaze at Cartagena’s Cala del Gorguel before the arsonist fled in a car. by Rhiannan Bell On Monday afternoon, the emergency 112 centre began to receive calls warning of a forest fire in the area. Fire crews, rescue teams, Civil Protection, and environmental agents and the forest brigade immediately launched a coordinated plan to prevent the spread of the flames. Volunteers and officers from nearby municipalities and forest brigades of Cartagena, Mazarrón, Lorca, Murcia, Totana and Alhama were involved in extinguishing the fire, and help was requested from the Ministry of Agriculture helicopter based at La Alberquilla in Caravaca de la Cruz. Both air and land resources worked throughout the afternoon on the affected area and around 7pm, it was reported that the fire had been stabilised. The president of the region, Pedro Antonio Sanchez, requested the cooperation of citizens “in prevention, information and awareness,” and said that if in the end if it is proved that the fire was intentional “we will act forcefully because no one can go free for these actions.” However, he insisted: “We must wait for the police investigation and aappealed for calm as the emergency services worked to control the fire.”

Ground control to Major Tim by Rhiannan Bell THE UK astronaut Tim Peake landed safely in Kazakhstan at the weekend. Major Peake and two other crew members travelled back to earth on board the Soyuz capsule having successfully unlocked from the International Space Station (ISS) in the early hours of Saturday morning. During his stay, he made the first spacewalk by a UK astronaut and remotely steered a robot on Earth, he also participated in the London Marathon, held science classes for school children and presented Adele with her global success BRIT award, reducing the singer to tears. The other two astronauts travelling with Peake were Russian Yuri Malenchenko and US Timothy Kopra, having spent 186 days on the ISS.
Star Trek actor killed in freak accident A YOUNG up and coming actor has been killed in what can only be described as a freak accident in California. Anton Yelchin, aged 27, who plays a starring role in the Star Trek Beyond film due to be released in July became pinned between his Chrysler car and a post box on his way to rehearsals on Sunday morning. Yelchin was discovered after concerned friends visited his home in San Fernando Valley, California, because he had failed to attend a rehearsal hours earlier, he was found at the scene trapped between the vehicle and a brick post box along a security fence. Jenny Hauser, an LAPD spokesperson said: “It was the result of the victim’s own car rolling backwards down his steep driveway. The victim was on his way to meet his friends for rehearsal, and when he didn’t show up, his friends went to his house, where they found him deceased by his car. It appeared he had momentarily exited his car leaving it in the driveway.” Paramount Pictures, the film company which makes Star Trek, said in a statement: “All of us at Paramount join the world in mourning the untimely passing of Antony Yelchin.” Born in Russia, an only child, the actor moved to the US with his family, who were professional figure skaters, when he was just a baby. He had his first acting role when he was just nine years old. Fiat Chrysler is investigating whether an issue with the car rolling while in ‘park’ mode could have killed the Star Trek actor. The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said in February that 2015 models of the vehicle - like Yelchin’s - could continue to move after drivers thought they had locked them in “park”, and linked the issue to more than 100 crashes.
He is the first person to visit space under the UK banner since Helen Sharman in 1991. Speaking in his last live link-up from space, Major Peake said: “It’s been a fantastic six months up here - a really remarkable, incredible experience. I’m looking forward to coming home, looking forward to seeing my friends and my family, but I am going to miss this place.” Once back on earth Tim is described as experiencing the feeling of “the wold’s worst hangover” as his body adjusts to gravity. He is reported as having dizziness and vertigo since returning, although experts say that this is normal for anyone who has spent a sustained period of time in a zero gravity environment. His achievements have earnt him a Queen’s Birthday Honour that was out of this world – Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George for ‘extraordinary service beyond our planet’.

Mountain wildfire PHOTOGRAPHER ALEC Bettney was able to capture the cruel beauty of the wildfi res in Valencia spreading across mountain ridges. THE NIGHT shots show the vivid colours of the blaze – tackled in daylight by brave pilots flying helicopters, light aircraft using flame retardant and heavier seaplanes dropping water. He said he was up at 4am on the balcony of his home near Xativa which overlooks the mountain ridges of Carcaixent. “The first ridge is about 4km away and the flames spread across an area about 8km long,” said Alec. “The fires started last Thursday and the night shots were taken early on Friday morning. “It was all over by Sunday afternoon – the fires are now out completely although a helicopter does fly around every day, obviously to maintain a fire watch.” Alec is a professionally trained photographer and does accept commissions. Banks accept the latest sentences and pay back the money to those affected in Almanzora Country Club (Huma Mediterraneo) WE ARE happy to report further good news to buyers affected after buying off plan in the Almanzora Country Club complex, from the promoter Huma Mediterraneo. THE MAIN bank of the promoter Huma (BP) has accepted without filing an appeal, the recent judgment of the Provincial Court of Murcia, number 163/2016, where the appeal court confirmed the court decision granted in favor of several clients who presented a joint action represented by our firm. The same Bank, in another recent judgment won by ourselves in favor of a British couple, has accepted the judgment granted in April 2016 by the Court No. 4 of Totana, once again without appealing. This marks a change in the bank litigation strategy, since before they systematically appealed all court decisions. Similarly, in certain cases, other banks that opened bank accounts for Huma Mediterraneo and received payment on account from their buyers, are accepting responsibility before the courts, even before the court decision is granted, acquiescing to claims presented by our firm. Whilst we do not know if this change in their court strategy is definitive, we believe it is likely due to the number of court orders granted against banks by Spanish judges. Recent Supreme Court rulings have made clear their position and interpretation of the law 57/68, noting that buyers who do not have their money guaranteed by an individual guarantee, could still claim from the banks that received the money and opened special accounts to developers without ensuring that the necessary guarantees to refund the money if the developer could not hand over the properties were in place, as required by law. The banks are also responsible if they grant a general bank guarantee line for the development, even though they had not granted an individual guarantee for some buyers. Our firm has helped many people affected to recover their money, having won 100% of the claims filed against Huma Mediterrano banks in this complex. We encourage affected consumers of the complex Almanzora Country Club to claim. Moreover, we charge our fees if only we win and you get paid by the bank, and usually in these cases, the judges will ask the bank to pay our legal fees. Do not hesitate, contact us and we will help you.

By the time you read this article we should know the Brexit result and the effect if any on the world’s financial markets. Life is full of choices and risks, usually people opt for the safest choice, or the one that means little or no change, the saying is “better the devil you know”. However for most expatriates this is not the case, for those of you who have retired or relocated to Spain you have already shown that you are not adverse to changing your life even if there are risks associated with that change. Most of you made this change as you felt it was beneficial for some reason or another to your wellbeing and future. This rational works equally as well when looking at wealth management, at the moment in an uncertain financial environment of low growth and low returns unless you are prepared to move away from the tradition deposit/savings accounts your money is just not going to work for you and if you need to take income your capital will be quickly eroded.
Now that Brexit is out of the way there is no better time to work with a professional adviser to manage your wealth to try to maximise its growth potential. It’s time to take a serious look at all the options out there, diversify your portfolio and where necessary take a calculated amount of risk for potential returns that meet your requirements. All our yesterdays by JACK TROUGHTON
ANTIQUE HUNTERS and collectors on the Costa Blanca enjoyed a fair at the weekend as a new event boasting timeless treasures opened its doors last Sunday. A fourth Antiques Fair at the Salon Canor in Teulada has been added to the calendar and successfully attracted a crowd of people on Sunday interested in browsing the stalls.
Organiser Sue Horey said the new date was agreed to satisfy popular demand and the response was encouraging. “It has been very good for me and I hope for all the stall holders,” she said. “We have had more people through the door than expected because it is the first one in June. “We have been staging these shows for years and they are very popular; next June we hope can only be even better.
“And in general, there’s lots of interest in the hall. I have sold to Russians, French, Spanish, Germans and lots of British.” She said antiques fairs were ‘very in’ and with a host of programmes on the television, people were very interested on what was on offer. “And there is a great variety of antiques on show and many different people here selling them,” added Sue.

Dick Handscombe Practical gardener and author
Some hints for summer gardeners TODAY IS the first day of July and by the end of the month we will probably have had the hottest garden temperatures of the year as well as the hottest feisty debates over the Brexit results. Unfortunately I had to send this copy before the results were publicised. In the same way gardeners will be determined to maintain garden colour, prevent plants from wilting beyond a recoverable level, battle with bugs using eco methods, maintain deadheading and the pruning of dangerous branches and do all four without wilting oneself. Let’s look at each in reverse order. Prime gardening times are in the cool of the morning 06.30 to 10.30 and 6.30 to 10.30 in the evening except on entertaining days. As you wander around the garden deadhead and prune dangerously over hanging branches as you come to them. Eco gardening is most essential during the summer as with visitors around there are more people in your own and neighbours gardens preferring to avoid breathing in chemically polluted air from insecticides, fungicides and fertilizers. In this respect I noticed this week that Neudorf’s anti ant spray is now powered by liquid air. Hopefully other garden products will be designed in similar ways. If you can’t find the product locally then resort to pouring boiling water into cracks in paths and dusting ant runs with natural yellow sulphur powder. I am afraid that I have not had much success over the years with the mini ant trap tins - seems that ants warn each other to avoid the holes in the tins like bacteria become immune to some antibiotics. One of the common dangers when watering plants in the evening is to start off spraying hot water heated by the sun while lying in an unrolled garden hose. So don’t leave hoses rolled out and keep rolled up ones in the shade. Automatic irrigation systems are now best set to operate a little after midnight when plant foliage and surface soils have cooled off and there is time for water to get down to root levels before water is lost by evaporation once day time temperatures start to rise. If you are determined to continue to fertilize flowering plants during the summer, I don’t, recognise that new young weak growth wilts quicker that tougher mature growths. So dilute two or three times your winter concentrations in the same way that wise gardeners, especially in Andalucia, dilute their summer wines with aerated water or cazera. If you have vegetables growing in full sun crops with survive longer if given some shading until the end of September and the cost of watering will be reduced. In this way you can keep plants strong enough to be able to harvest tomatoes, peppers and aubergines through to Christmas. Of course another way is to crow summer salad and grilling vegetables in builder’s buckets or a growing table in a semi shaded place.
‘Starting to harvest for a salad including hibiscus flowers en route’ Hope this week’s ideas hep you survive the hottest weeks of the year sanely.

Google UK Dear Aunty I have lost my home page Google to another. How to get Google UK back please Many thanks, Ray Reply: This is how you change the Home page in Google Chrome - if
Can i remove it? Hi Aunty Virus I am on Windows 10. I already have Malwarebytes Anti-malware . I also have AVG which I do not like, Can I remove it. If so will the Anti-Malware be sufficient. The laptop is not used for any business Your advice would be much appreciated. Many thanks, Ray Reply: Windows 10 comes with its own anti virus software, Defender, which I fond works fine. So if you want to uninstall AVG, then you can, and ensure that Windows 10 “Defender” activates via the security settings. But just to make sure, I update and run a Malwarebytes scan once a month just to make sure.
that is what I understand you to be using when you say “I have been using Google”. 1. On your computer, in the top-right corner of Chrome, click the Menu > Settings. 2. Under “On Start Up” You will see “open a specific Page or set of pages” and next to it “Set Pages” 3. Click set pages. 4. In Add New Page input “www.google.co.uk”. 5 The remove unwanted pages - like your AVG Yahoo page. Now every time you open Chrome your homepage will be “google”

WITH A background in family and matrimonial mediation, Life Coach Sara Bell helps Readers with their daily worries. If you are having difficulties with relationships, family, work or any other aspect of your life, then help is at hand.
She’s a flirt
My new wife has always been a flirt. I notice how she still desires the attention of other men even after we married. She says it is harmless, and she is only having fun, but someone told me that she had been seen having several cosy conversations with a man where she works, and she is being secretive with her phone. I want loyalty from her, and a future where we only want each other. I don’t look at anyone else, and I don’t understand why she doesn’t feel the same. Flirtatious behaviour in a marriage can be dangerous. Engaging in intimate conversations with members of the opposite sex leads to emotional experiences that cloud judgment, and can ultimately progress toward physical intimacies outside of marriage. You took vows to be faithful to each other, but your wife is pushing the boundaries. Your marriage could be in trouble. If you can get her along to couples counselling this may help.

Drifting apart
My husband and I are so busy with our jobs. We work different hours, and hardly see each other. When we get time off, because the other is invariably working, we go out with our respective friends a lot. I feel we are almost leading separate lives and drifting apart. We talked about it, and agreed something needs to be done. Relationships suffer when couples don’t mesh their lives through shared activities, recreational companionship or spending enough time together. Time needs to be set aside to enjoy conversation, common interests, holidays and fun. Time spent together should be anticipated with pleasure. Without this component, over time couples drift apart and have little in common. You say you need your jobs and of course work is important. But, if your schedules don’t become more compatible, your identity as husband and wife may be lost completely. Decide what is more important in your lives, and make changes.

Mercury offers to open channels of communication this week, since through no fault of yours, there is a current breakdown. Right at the beginning of the week a conjunction with Mars makes things a lot more complex than it needs to be. If nobody will listen then silence may just be the right action to take, but here and now something needs to be said. A double action with Venus may just see you going back to a past action to get resolve and transparency; which is what you need right now. Both Saturn and Neptune should inspire your current way of thinking, influencing both future plans and finances, both which are open to discussion and need to be taken seriously if any benefit is to come your way. The midweek sextile between Mercury and Uranus heralds new enterprise, and you should have no fear in putting your best foot forward ; even though you haven’t made absolutely binding decisions. Keeping things open right now allows you to make the subtle choices that are vital, both to you and to the success of the project now in hand. The entry of Mercury at the end of the week makes a huge difference to your workload and to how you currently are feeling about things in general. A refreshing and vital input from the planet of Communication lifts your anxietiesand urges you to import your skills and brush away any doubts that you seem to have accumulated on the way! You can’t survive on foolish pride, and what has happened has happened and there is no going back now. In hindsight you needed to have backing and an escape route in sight, but all is not lost. With the Sun as Governor of the Cosmos well installed, play for the loophole that now exists and take that on because it is now something to chew on. Mercury dominates the Cosmos this week and a midweek sextile with Ceres helps to balance and rectify something rather wonderful. You have indeed put all of your eggs into one basket, and that means that taking a risk now, when the cards are down, will bring the rich rewards you need to carry on with your most inspiring work to date!
Venus takes on Saturn and is encouraged to take on the wisdom and power associated with this subtle planet. Love is very much in question at the moment, but you are being true to yourself when you hold back, as there are questions of importance that have remained unanswered. Because you have to be sure, stall for time whatever you do!
You are about to be rewarded for the good things you have been doing, so hold your temper; even if those around you right now appear to be losing theirs. You have made a huge difference to a situation that was sticky to say the least, but your patience and diligence are about to be the focus as news of your actions impacts on those who care.
All is well at last, as you turn the page on a matter that is best forgotten, but not forgiven. Mercury calls time on a project that needed impetus, but which lacked both leadership and control too. Both things out of your hands and you are blissfully free to make some plans once again, hopefully with an eye to you taking a well deserved breather! Saturn takes on Venus and the effect smooths over something that has upset you greatly, though you haven’t let it be known. You now need something to get your teeth into once again, this time with people who you can trust around you, as well as all the love you need to want to carry on doing all the inspiring and caring things that you do Uranus is subject to a sextile with Mercury. You are poised ready to take on new work, using the communication energies that you have denied yourself, but which you are so very good at. Take a long hard look at some recent achievements as you will find that you can be your own worst critic sometimes. Believe in you and all you do. Venus influences a stoic Neptune this week. If you feel that you need convincing this week then here it is! Something begins just as something ends, and you appear resolute but content with the way that things are going on right now. Lighten up! You can be so hard on yourself, but right now you are balancing your life to make a difference.

KENNY, THIS year I have lost both of my parents, and it has been a real blow for me. I feel like giving up on my faith and I have stopped looking for solution as a result. Verity R. What a wonderful name you have. As a truthseeker you should look to your name to see how empowering you could be right now. Parents do die, but I can imagine this has phased you, especially as we are only in June. Never give up your faith because it is your very essence and it is what inspires you. Accept and thrive on survival because you did not die. The body ages and we know that it gets tired and dies one day. Meanwhile we have gifts to give, people to help and love to shower on those we really care for. Really care for yourself right now, and you will turn this current feeling around to enable you to inspire those who really need it!
If It’s Your Birthday This Week Put communication right at the top of the list whilst removing all doubt and fear. Right now, all across the Cosmos, openings are ready and waiting to be taken on. Have a long hard look at yourself, and make magic happen, it is nearer than you think it is.

Skip’s Tips – look and feel younger LIFESTYLE COACH Skip Archimedes has joined RTN to bring a series of tips to help readers enjoy life to the maximum through by JACK TROUGHTON SKIP, WHO will run a free one day event in Spain in October, already successfully stages ‘mind, body and soul’ seminars around the world. And he said: “Wouldn’t you like to look & feel younger? How would this improve the quality of your life? Well I’m pleased to share with you over the next couple of months my tips that have been proven to work all over the world for people of all shapes and sizes. “We are a mind, body and spirit, when we feed all three we start to function at our best. Every two weeks I’ll be giving you some simple Skip’sTips to help you on your path so that you can start to live Forever Young. “Tips for your body by fueling it with great nutrition - you’ve heard the saying “you are what you eat”, well we’re taking it two steps further by giving you some great fun exercises to help keep you feeling young, plus some simple tips to override stress.” Skip’s Tip No.1 – “Add a green juice to your day. By consuming these nutrients this way they’ll get into your blood stream while they are still alive and this will have a direct impact on helping you to feel more alive so you start your day in an amazing way. “Here’s a recipe we use at the retreats I run all over the world and is well received everywhere. I suggest you starting your day with this for breakfast; you’ll feel the difference almost immediately. By removing the fibre and leaving the live nutrients and live waters, they get straight into your blood without the body using energy to break the food down and pass out the waste. This is an amazing habit to introduce daily.” Lean Green Power Juice Spinach- One big handful Cucumber – Half Apple Lemon – Half Ginger – Thumbnail size “To begin with you might want another apple for sweetness but aim to reduce this as your taste buds change. We want to keep the sugars nice and low. “I’m also going to be coming to give a FREE one day event October 1st so if you would like to register then simply go to: http://skiparchimedes.com/foreveryoung”

Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie | Official HD Trailer #1 | 2016
GREED IS one of the seven deadly sins, and of all people to pop up in the news on this subject matter it was Adele. Apparently she paid herself £2.5 million and has now been ordered to pay it back to Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs. The lassie from Tottenham is reportedly worth around £88 million, and is set to sign a £90 million contract with Sony Music, but sources close to her have revealed that her accountants spotted the mistake and rectified it … A mistake? … 2.5 million squidly did found its way into her handbag by mistake? A spokesperson said “All relevant disclosures have been made and the position has been resolved.” Nudge Nudge, say no more!
Harry´s got the style, and the moves like Jagger IN 2010 five lads failed at the male singers stages of the X Factory, but judge at the time Nicole Scherzinger suggested they should be put together as a group, and so began the phenomenon that is / was One Direction. Harry Styles was the one who came up with the name One Direction, and it certainly was one direction they took, rocketing to major success virtually overnight, even although they only came third in the TV show. The band announced a hiatus, or what is more likely, a split last year, and its Harry who´s popped up with the most spectacular of new careers. Acting is the chosen direction, and Harry the Hunk has already had his first taste of Hollywood, currently filming Christopher Nolan’s World War Two drama ´Dunkirk´ in which he is starring alongside Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Kenneth Branagh and Mark Rylance ... a thespian style motley crew indeed, but there is a much bigger acting project allegedly waiting in the wings for the boy. In 2006 a book was published by US author Robert Greenfield called ´Exile on Main Street: A Season in Hell with the Rolling Stones, and Harry Styles has all but signed to play the young Mick Jagger in the film that will be directed by Andy Goddard (Downton Abbey, Law & Order: SVU). It could well happen as he’s got the wavy hair, he’s got the charm, he knows how to get the ladies, and he’s got the moves like Jagger, making the role almost perfect for him. Harry was born in Redditch, Worcester on February 1st 1994, and loved to sing from an early age, noting Freddie Mercury, Elvis Presley and The Beatles as his influences, and while at Holmes Chapel Comprehensive was the lead singer of White Eskimo, who won a local Battle of the Bands competition. As a sixteen-year-old Harry worked part-time at the West Mandeville Bakery in Holmes Chapel, and when his boss asked him to occasionally work in the front shop he noticed a lot more girls started to come in, so Harry serving in the shop became a permanent fixture … you either got it or you aint, and Harry´s got it in shedloads. The Rolling Stones released double album ´Exile on Main Street´ in 1972, a vibrant time in the world of pop music, ´Tumbling Dice´ being the big single making the top ten in the UK and America. Go get um Harry boy! BRITISH BAND The Vamps were signed to Mercury records in 2012, a group who got together after a series of video uploads on YouTube, after which they had 5 consecutive top ten singles and their first album made No 2. They are currently working on their third album after their second ´Wake Up´ did ok, and they might have pulled off a bit of a coup, as Brooklyn Beckham, son of David, is being courted to record a rapping track for them. Lead singer Brad Simpson told The Sun “We want to get him involved, he can spit bars (rapping to you and me!) Brooklyn is ‘crazy talented’ and after helping with the ´Wake Up´ video we’ve wanted to team up with him again for a while. Cute move Brad!
KATE MULGREW stars as Galina “Red” Reznikov in Orange is the New Black and was interviewed by Lorraine on ITV last week and talked of her strange childhood. “I was born with a full set of teeth” she said “and they’re very dangerous as the baby can swallow them.” For her own safety, her parents had them removed, but her mouth was not the only strange thing about young Kate. She said that she had an inability to feel pain when she was a baby as well, so her parents essentially had to keep her kennelled. “They built me a little cage, because I had no sense of pain until I was four years old,” she said.” Teeth and no sense of pain! In Shakespeare´s day she´d been burned at the stake!
WE CAN only imagine what it must be like being in the public eye when every wrinkle and ounce of flesh goes under the microscope. Meg Ryan was 26 when she made When Harry met Sally, and Tom Cruise was 24 when he made Top Gun, and with them now both in their mid-fifties, they are smack dab in the middle of the ´obsessed with looks´ scenario that is Hollywood. Meg attended the Tony Awards last week and the way she looked swept the Internet to which she said “I don’t pay a lot of attention frankly, there’s a lot of hatred in the world today, imagine being a hater, how stupid!” Excellent! On Cruise, its rumoured he´s off to Switzerland for a facelift, something that’s categorically denied by his people. Don’t Worry, Be Wrinkly!

Shopping treat
by Jack Troughton
SHOPPERS AT the busy Zenia Boulevard enjoyed some musical entertainment when Melody Makers International – a leading Costa chorus – performed three times. The entertainment was in aid of The Butterfly Children Charity (DEBRA), which supports youngsters born with Eipdermylosis Bullosa, an incurable condition resulting in extreme fragility of the skin; blisters and open wounds can result from the slightest touch. Melody Makers, with conductor Nigel Hopkins, performed a superb medley of songs from both ‘Phantom of the Opera’ and the Abba movie ‘Mamma Mia!’ to rapturous applause from the thousands of shoppers enjoying an evening outing to the popular centre. Simon Morton from Sunshine FM compered the event and amongst the performers was Verity Hall the 18-year-old ‘singing sensation’, superbly soaring above the Boulevard with music from ‘My Fair Lady’, and Nigel Hopkins himself, performing the Harry Secombe classic ‘If I Ruled the World’. Melody Makers will continue its 2016 support for charity - it raised 3,000€ at a January concert – and next weekend the chorus performs ‘A Century of Popular Songs’ at the Orihuela Costa Resort on Saturday 25th June. Tickets for both the afternoon (2pm) and evening (8pm) performances are available from La Ponderosa Gift Shop at La Zenia C.C.; also at the Card Place at both Punta Prima and Benimar, and both of The Butterfly Children charity shops in Pueblo Bravo and Urbanisation La Marina, San Fulgencio.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
127 Place Names I recently received a letter of appreciation for my article on mispronounced words, which was very nice, thank you.
The writer finished by asking me to bring pressure to bear on local radio stations regarding their annoying pronunciation of Almoradí. I have to say that this is not the first time I have been asked to lead a crusade against English speaking radio stations, but so far I have resisted the temptation. Personally, I am a fan of Cadena Ser, which keeps me company as I tootle around in my car, and their Spanish pronunciation is usually pretty good! However here is some ammunition for those who might wish to take up the challenge. Firstly, we need to look at some of the most frequent errors and put them straight. As the letter writer correctly states, Almoradí has an accent on the last syllable, and should therefore have the beat at the end - AlmoraDI. There are a number of similar instances, where English speakers incorrectly assume that the beat goes on the penultimate syllable. For example the Costa Cálida (the warm coast) should be pronounced Costa CAlida and not Costa CaLIda. This is the one that most irritates me, possibly because I live there! Also close to home for me is Lo Pagán. Notice there is an accent on the end – Lo PagÁN. This also has to the two “a” vowels pronounced exactly the same, so the result should not sound like an alternative to Christianity.
Before I leave my own neck of the woods, I would also mention Los Alcázares, which sounds like this – Los AlCAzares, and not Los AlcazARes (not forgetting the Spanish “z” sounding like our “th”) and finally, a small plea for Dos Mares, which should never sound like “two horses”, which I have heard, although not on local radio!
Another odd pronunciation which I often notice is Orihuela. This is not a case of misplaced beat, but two other things that happen here. Firstly people pronounce the “h” when they shouldn’t, and secondly the “ue” combination of two simple vowels, changes to an “oo-ay” sound. This gives us “Ori-whoo-ayler” – not easy to write, but believe me it sounds weird, and quite possibly unrecognizable to the inhabitants of the town. I’m sure that as you read this you are thinking of many of your own examples – Rojales (Roe-jails), Quesada (Coosahda), San Miguel (San Migwel)- the possibilities are endless. By the way, the bit in brackets is wrong, not right! The same problem exists with street names (Ramón Gallud, should not be Ramón Galood) and personal names. Some time ago I was introduced at an English TV studio to a Spanish cameraman called “Smile”. Poor
old “Smile” got ordered around the place for months and never once stopped to mention that his name was actually “Ismael”. Having said all of that, I think there is a case for “anglicizing” more well-known names, when speaking in English. For example, we do have an English pronunciation for Barcelona and Madrid which don’t sound too much like the original. That automated male voice that announces place names at Spanish airports also “anglicizes”. He says SanTANder, instead of SantanDER, and MERsia instead of MURcia. This is an interesting point and has to do with the evolution of languages. Is it acceptable to pronounce CÓRdoba, as CorDOba, and CÁdiz as CaDIZZ? And which is more annoying, the anglicized version used while speaking English, or people who make a point of pronouncing everything “a la española” all the time?!

Marathon man & diddymen
THIRTY FOUR years ago your scribbler agreed to run the inaugural Wolverhampton marathon for, as Smashie & Nicey would prattle, ‘charidy.’ Some cynics may opine it was also a desperate P.R. stunt to stem my haemorrhaging radio ratings - as if.

On the face of it no worries, back in 1982 when I wore a younger man’s budgie smugglers, I was fairly fit. Little formal training was undertaken – curry had been consumed the night before – and on the day of the race a couple of Dr. Jack Daniel’s medicinal sharpeners were imbibed – what could possibly go wrong? This is where the 3½ decade recall gets a bit fuzzy – apparently Ken Dodd was the guest of honour with the starting pistol. Was he? You’d think I’d have a clear recollection if indeed, my hero, the Grand Poobah of Knotty Ash was amongst us. I’ve always wanted to interview him even with his defined no-go areas - revenue & romance. Such japes we’d have - shoving a cucumber through the Vicar’s letterbox shouting –“Help! the Martians have landed.” Did I miss my tickling stick moment? Some bright Herbert at the radio station thought it would an absolutely ‘spiffing wheeze’ to trail behind with the outside broadcast radio car. “We can hear all your witty asides with the other nutters.” As you approach the metaphorical wall at around 18 miles waggish witticisms are in short supply, replaced by Black Country Cussing at it’s industrial finest. However the first 6 miles were a breeze – I’m thinking what’s all the fuss, we’re a quarter of the race done, and I’m flying (Stupid Boy). So confident that we actually stopped off at a pub to do a colour piece for the radio, and obviously it would have been rude to turn down an offer to nudge the suds. Two miles later by the side of the road last night’s curry asked permission to leave. Also with all this stopping & starting I’m seizing up & tottering along with the mobility of a paralytic penguin. Little old ladies on Zimmer frames are overtaking me with ill-concealed contempt. Long story short, it took me 8 hours 22.47 minutes to finish – last – a record that still stands. If, by chance, you were there on Sunday March 28th 1982, with or without Diddymen, or have any other marathon mishaps email me – ashleybobble@hotmail.com

Lamb & potato salad Although the recipe calls for lamb tenderloins, you could certainly substitute leftover grilled lamb with excellent results.
INGREDIENTS 3 lb lamb fillets 1/4 cup vegetable oil 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 cup fresh mint, chopped 2 lb baby new potatoes, scrubbed 2 red peppers, roasted and chopped 1 lb asparagus, blanched and chopped 2 tbsp fresh chives, chopped 1/3 cup lime juice 1/2 cup olive oil 4 egg yolks 2 tbsp olive oil DIRECTIONS 1. Steam the new potatoes on the side burner until tender, then drain. If the potatoes are larger than bite sized, cut them into halves or quarters as appropriate. Set aside.
2. Blanch the asparagus on the side burner, plunge into ice water, then drain on paper towel lined wire racks. Set aside. 3. Preheat the barbecue on HIGH, and place red peppers on grids. Char on all sides, then remove from the heat. Place the peppers in a paper bag to cool, then slip off the charred skins; seed and chop. 4. Grill the lamb on HIGH for 2 - 3 minutes per side. Cool, then slice. 5. To make the dressing, place the yolks, garlic, and lime juice in a blender, or in the bowl of a food processor. With the motor running, add the oils in a thin stream. Add the chopped mint leaves. Season with salt and pepper if desired. 6. Toss the lamb, potatoes, peppers and blanched asparagus with the dressing, and garnish with fresh chives.

Seafood curry Packed with salmon, mussels and prawns, try this impressive yet authentic seafood curry.
Ingredients 75g ghee (you can substitute with margarine) 300g skinless white fish like pollack, cut into large chunks 200g skinless salmon, cut into large chunks 200g raw peeled prawn 100g mussels, cleaned and de-bearded For the curry sauce 1 onion, roughly chopped 100g ginger, chopped 50ml vegetable oil 2 tsp garam masala ½ tsp asafoetida (if you have it) 1 tsp turmeric 1 red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped (leave the seeds in if you like it really hot) 400g can chopped tomatoes good handful coriander leaves Method 1. For the curry sauce, whizz the onion and ginger together to a purée. Heat the oil in a large pan until smoking. Add the garam marsala and sizzle for 30 secs, then add the onion and ginger purée, reduce the heat and slowly cook for 5 mins. Add the remaining spices, fry for 1 min, stir in the chilli and fry for another min, then add the tomatoes and a good pinch of salt and grind of pepper, and stir well. You can do this way in advance, then just throw the curry together on the night – the sauce will freeze or keep in the fridge
for up to 3 days. 2. To make the curry, melt a third of the ghee in a large pan. Cook the white fish for 2-3 mins until lightly browned, then set aside on a plate. Repeat this process with the salmon and prawns, adding another third of ghee each time. For the mussels, heat a mediumsized saucepan on a high heat. Add the mussels with 2 tbsp of water, cover tightly with a lid, and steam for 3-4 mins, shaking the pan every so often. Drain and set aside with the other seafood. 3. Bring the sauce to the boil, stir the fish and mussels in gently, bring to the boil again, then remove from the heat and leave for 3-4 mins – the fish will finish cooking in the heat from the sauce. Add the coriander leaves and serve with Spiced rice and Carrot & cumin salad (see ‘Goes well with’ on the right of this page).

life&leisure #advertising feature ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja creates Vaccines against Cancer The hospital has set up a ‘Clean Room’ to make specific immunotherapy treatments for oncology patients. Torrevieja, June 9 2016. Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja has set up a Clean Room (Sala Blanca, in Spanish) designed to meet GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) quality criteria, for the elaboration of advanced therapy medications, such as vaccines with dendritic cells. Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja’s Oncology Platform medical team, lead by doctor Antonio Brugarolas, has started production of dendritic cells obtained from the blood of patients suffering from advanced neoplasms, “such as metastatic prostate cancer, which consistently show that it’s possible to obtain a specific immune reaction against the tumour.” In addition to working with this cancer, the Clean Room’s roadmap includes plans to get involved in manufacturing vaccines for treating patients with melanoma and breast cancer. Doctors Manuel Sureda and Belén Valenzuela, who together head the Clean Room’s immunotherapy programme, explain that, “from the clinical perspective, it has been shown that these cancer vaccines are a safe therapeutic strategy, which is well tolerated, and does not generate an autoimmune response.” According to doctor Belén Valenzuela, “immunotherapy is an oncological treatment option that uses the immune system to fight cancer.” It seeks therapeutic benefit through the mobilisation of the immune system. Dendritic cells are the ones that have the most potent antigens we know of, far greater than macrophages or B-lymphocytes. These cells are capable of presenting tumourspecific peptides to cytotoxic T lymphocytes and, this way, promote their activation and proliferation so they recognise and eliminate tumour cells that express these peptides. In addition to their essential role in the activation of T-lymphocytes, these cells
directly interact with other types in the tumour microenvironment and promote an in vivo anti-tumour response. Elaboration Process Vaccine elaboration from dendritic cells for use in prostate cancer treatment includes several steps, all of which take place within the Clean Room. Using the patient’s blood, cells with only one nucleus (mononuclear), which are lymphocytes and monocytes, are selected. Then, a culture of dendritic cells is obtained through the incubation of these mononuclear cells with different stimulating molecules. During the final phases, the dendritic cells are incubated with prostatic acid phosphatase in order to obtain specific dendritic cells for this protein which, finally, will be infused back into the patient’s own bloodstream. This vaccine causes the in vivo activation and proliferation of T lymphocytes that are specific effectors of the tumour, which will recognise and eliminate the cancer cells expressing prostatic acid phosphatase. The ‘Clean Room’ and Immunotherapy to Fight Cancer The new space is a room that has been especially designed and built to obtain minimal or null levels of contamination, where so-called ‘advanced therapy medications’ can be are elaborated. The environmental parameters inside this room are strictly controlled: particles in the air, temperature, airflow, air pressure, light level, etc. The workers who enter the room wear sterile suits that include caps, facemasks, work overalls, gloves and overshoes, in order to avoid contaminating the room. The Clean Room includes different security system to make sure that the cells that they work on are not contaminated with microorganisms or particles. These include the following: The air that enters the lab is sterile, and has been filtered to eliminate suspended particles and microorganisms. It is completely replaced several times an hour, so dust cannot accumulate. It circulates through high-efficiency particulate arresting (HEPA) filters that retain particles. The production area and entry changing rooms are kept on a decreasing pressure level scale between each room and the outside, so that when doors are opened, air always comes out, and cannot go in. Movement between the different areas of the room involves a sluice-gate system to preserve the pressure differences
between the areas and between the Clean Room and the outside. The walls are covered in phenolic resin and their corners are rounded to prevent dirt accumulation. In addition, there are no water faucets or drains inside, since these are microbial contamination loci. The entry and exit of material and reactive substances takes place through a pressurised sluice system separate from the personnel gates; this prevents possible cross-contamination with the products made in the room. Other Applications of Cellular Therapy Other applications of cellular therapy that can be developed in the Clean Room, in addition to oncology, include cellular therapy with mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). MSCs are multipotent progenitor cells derived from bone marrow or fatty tissue, which are capable of differentiating from other cells of mesodermal origin (cartilage, muscle, bone and other cells). In fact, they can be used to treat cardiovascular or liver diseases, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, and even regenerate joint tissue, among other uses. It can also be used in the creation of antiangiogenic therapy for treating severe ischemias, such as Buerger’s disease, regenerative therapy with autologous limbocorneal cells to fight limbal stem cell deficiency, regenerative therapy with autologous epidermic sheets for epidermic regeneration (burn victims) or regenerative therapy with skeletal myoblasts, which have been used for regenerative medicine in patients with cardiovascular diseases in acute states, such as myocardial infarction, or in chronic states, such as coronary heart disease.

Netball galore! by Jack Troughton THE ‘SENORITAS’ of Rojales Netball Club were reached the quarter-finals of the international competition La Manga 7’s with 29 teams taking part. The tournament featured 25 teams from the UK, one from Copenhagen, as well as Rojales. La Manga and Marbella. The first Rojales game was a local derby as they were drawn against La Manga and the team came away triumphant with a 5-2 win. The club then brushed aside three of the UK teams with empathetic wins leaving them just Copenhagen to play in their qualifying group - this was a much tougher game and despite some good netball they lost which meant they came second in their group due to goal difference. In the knockout stages and Rojales met tough opposition from the West Midlands; 3-0 down at half time, the team showed some fighting spirit and managed to pull it back to 4-4 at full time, to win 5-4 with the golden goal. Without much rest, Rojales took on a team from Surrey in the quarter finals. Even though the girls worked tirelessly, they couldn’t pull this one out of the bag but need not be too disappointed as the opposition did make it all the way to the final.
What a great weekend of netball with some great performances both on and off the court! Vamos Rojales Señoritas! Rojales Netball Club is now on a summer break but will be back on Tuesdays in Quesada from September.
Next season they want to be bigger and better and with some dates already in the diary for competitive games are looking for new players, coaches, and umpires aged over 14 to join. For further details contact Claire on 680300637 or Tracey on 679539995.

This report gives you “two for one” The first was a welcome return to Vistabella and a good turnout, the second ois the celebrated Arthurs Bash for Arthurs Williams birthday.
LONGEST DRIVE: Alan Clifford
For the 14th It has to be said, the course is in very good condition and very playable, with greens taking well struck putts, but some got labelled as a dyslectic golfer – they couldn’t read the greens, the competition was Stableford. Arthur Williams seems to be celebrating his birthday in advance with a handicap cutting 40 points. The second event at El Plantio Golf was a twofold event as it not only celebrated Arthurs birthday but the 5th year of the renaming of the Society to Rockets.

A Great Win for the Men of Benitachell Bowls Club by patricia thompson On the 9th and 16th June the BBC, once again played for the Rose Bowl (ladies only) a friendly competition.
The men play for the Walton Trophy created and carved by Tony Walton. He was a great guy and BBC member for many years. The games are played home and away against our bowling neighbours Javea Green. The Ladies were at home for the first leg with temperatures in the 30’s it was hot work, but, a hard fought game saw success with 6 – 4 in favour of BBC. The second game away at Javea Green was again a real battle and finished with the Ladies of Javea Green sadly taking the Rose Bowl Trophy away from BBC by two shots. The BBC men were away at Javea Green on their first leg. Things did not go according to plan though as they had a deficit of 33 shots to take back to the BBC. The 16th was much cooler and the breeze at BBC was very welcome as the ‘boys’ needed to fight hard. The end result was a resounding success with BBC winning 5 points to 2 and an overall shot difference of 52 shots. Two great days enjoyed by all with a nice meal and raffle what more can one ask for. To enjoy this type of camaraderie check out the Benitachell Bowls Club Web site.

Theatre group backs heroes
CAMPOVERDE THEATRE Group’s successful show ‘Somme Memories of a Century’ raised 712€ for both the Orihuela Costa Branch of the royal British Legion and military charity Help for Heroes. by Jack Troughton The show marked the 100-year anniversary of one of World War One’s landmark battles and was performed as a review with song, dance and sketches. The branch usually raises money through street collections and the annual Poppy Appeal, so members were delighted by the visit of members of the theatre group to its monthly meeting. The money was receipts from recent performances and a cheque was presented by Pat Jarnet, who was accompanied by cast members Carron Porter, Jan Holden and Graham Pink. Campoverde Theatre Group is now working on its next production, ‘Gone but not Forgotten – a Tribute to the Stars’, which will be performed at the Phoenix Nights on 13th, 14th, 15th, and 16th of October, and pays homage to performers who have died in the last 12 months.

Subaru spanish meeting
THE UNMISTAKABLE T TAKABLE Subaru blue and the sound of roaring engines purring their way through Zaragoza could only mean one thing...... yes, June the 10th and 11th saw the 4th annual meeting of the Club Subaru España which was held in the picturesque town of Zaragoza. There were over 160 Subaru cars in attendance who, for the first time, were joined by Subaru Spain’s head of public relations and press agency, Iñigo Trasmonte Garcia. Iñigo and his team brought with them, 6 new Subaru models including the
Forester, the Legacy, the XV and the all new Impreza WRX which was undoubtedly the star of the show. Iñigo explained that “one of Subarus distinctive features is the flat/boxer engine and all-wheel-drive which became standard equipment for mid-size and smaller cars by 1996”. Modified versions of the Impreza WRX and WRX STi have been competing successfully in rallying. Drivers Colin McRae (1995), Richard Burns (2001) and Petter Solberg (2003) have won World Rally Championship drivers’ titles with the Subaru World Rally Team and Subaru took the manu-
facturers’ title three years in a row from 1995 to 1997. Drivers for individual rallies included Ari Vatanen, Per Eklund, Shekhar Mehta, Mike Kirkland, Possum Bourne and Harald Demut. Subaru’s World Rally Championship cars are prepared and run by Prodrive, the highly successful British motorsport team. The 2 day event was perfectly orchestrated by Jonas Prado to include karting, sight-seeing and obviously a lot of convoy driving which left the whole region alive to the throaty rumble of 160 Subarus and lots of happy faces.
