Let´s hope the message makes it through to the ivory towers in London and Madrid, even if it is by pigeon post. It is high time to start talks and end uncertainty. This time it was Javea with its finger on the pulse; expect more local authorities to follow. Brits have made a huge footprint on the Costas, our Spanish friends have also made lives for themselves in the UK. The growing fear is expats from both countries – and citizens from all members of the EU – will become bargaining chips…so for once, why not put people first? Now there’s a challenge. Halloween has come and gone, and there were some great costumes out there. Spain goes big on the party and Bonfire Night has its roots in a very British Gunpowder Plot. However, don´t despair, Christmas is coming. Reading a British daily paper in RTN Towers this week and the young hero of a comic strip was lamenting the end of overdosing on sugar after trick or treat – but quickly suggests a trip into town…to see the Christmas decorations! The years just fly by.

Backing cancer charity TWO DONATIONS were made to the cancer charity AECC in Albox to mark the end of October’s Spanish National Cancer Month. by Jack Troughton The Almeria Bowling Centre based in Los Llanos, Arboleas, was joined by FACE – Fundraising in Arboleas, Caring for Everyone – at the offices of the Asociacion Espanola Contra Cancer. The bowling alley’s Manager Rafael Aranda Amate and staff member Helen Simpson presented a cheque and cash to the value of 607€ raised during a special Bowling Day for Cancer. And FACE was represented by Vice President Carrie Green, who presented a cheque for 1,000€ The AECC is a national Spanish cancer support group, which operates telephone lines and a website, from which cancer sufferers, their families and the general public can obtain information about the disease. It also provides accommodation for cancer patients and support for the mobile breast screening units that can regularly be seen in the towns and villages throughout the Almanzora Valley. ANIMAL CHARITY Paws-Patas has organised a ‘Cat Treasure Hunt’ on Sunday 13th November to raise funds urgently needed for its feline neutering programme. There are easy to follow clues, a prize for the winning car, and burgers, hotdogs and drinks at the finish. Every dog has its DNA by Jack Troughton POOCHES IN a Valencia community must report to their local vet to give blood and establish a DNA database in a clampdown on owners who allow dogs to foul the streets. Mislata Town Hall, a district near Spain’s third largest city, has launched a hi-tech anti-poop campaign in a bid to end the menace of animal waste littering the streets. Until Saturday 31st December, vets will take a blood sample free of charge but those who fail to register their pet’s DNA will face fines of 300€. Under the scheme, samples of dog poop collected by street cleaners will go to local police and on to a local laboratory for analysis – and those owners who disregard bylaws to clean up the mess could be fined 200€ every time they turn a blind eye. After registering with the authorities, every owner will be given a name tag to be worn on their dog’s collar – and Valencia is also considering making disposable cardboard tongs available – making it easier to pick up after a pet. The DNA test has already been introduced in certain parts of both the USA and UK in a fight back against antisocial behaviour.

Free water

THE GOVERNMENT in Andalucia plans to make it law that bars, cafes, vending machines and public buildings all offer customers water free of charge. It is part of the regional government’s drive to promote a healthy lifestyle, a move that includes regulations that schools must have a minimum of five hours devoted to physical activity. Figures reveal 18.7% of adults and 22.5% of children in Andalucia are dangerously obese and bars and restaurants will be required to offer healthy options in different portion sizes – while school lunches will also be regulated. It is the government’s fight back against the demise of the once traditional ‘Mediterranean diet’; suffering against the onslaught of processed and packaged food with an abundance of fried dishes. The ‘free water’ rule is also to help combat obesity by offering a healthy alternative to sugar-laden soft drinks – and in a wider issue to encourage everyone to drink more liquids in the summer heat when dehydration can be fatal.

by jack troughton THE GOVERNMENTS of Spain and the United Kingdom are “urged” to immediately start talks to agree a common strategy over the future of expats. A Spanish town hall has unanimously voted to prompt both nations’ leaders to reach a deal “as soon as possible” that respects the social and political rights of both British citizens in Spain and Spanish expats in the UK. And local politicians have also called for the Generalitat Valencia – the regional government – to guarantee access to health, education and social services. Javea Town Hall’s strongly worded message has been sent to the governments of Spain, Valencia, and the British Embassy in Madrid; as well as the media. Mayor Jose Chulvi, backed by councillors, said the town’s commitment was “firm and unequivocal in favour of maintaining the rights of all our citizens.” The welcome move comes at a time of uncertainty for expats in both countries following the historic referendum of 23rd June and the vote to leave the European Union. RTN was told it was hoped that other town halls with British living in the community would also pass similar motions to build pressure on the authorities in London, Madrid and Valencia. Mr Chulvi (pictured) said the decision to trigger ‘Brexit’ had consequences that directly affected Javea as a society and as a town – and warned a “demise” of a section of the community would be “a backwards step with serious consequences”. “Since the second half of the 20th Century, the resident British community in Xabia (Javea) has grown and strengthened at every level; to the extent we no longer speak of foreigners living in Xabia but ’xabieros’ who were born far from here,” he said. REGISTERED The town has more than 5,300 registered UK ‘xabieros’ and the mayor said there could be no differences regarding rights, obligations and considerations. “We all shape and care for our community and we cannot lose sight of their success and establishment which is based on a harmonious coexistence among all the cultures represented among us,” said Mr Chulvi. “Moreover, at the economic level, it is undeniable that the prosperity Xabia has experienced in the last 50 years is largely due to foreign inputs: people who, at a certain moment in their lives, decided to leave their country of origin and settle in our town and contribute their best.” He said he did not just mean economic investment but of the strong and deep links between everyone who felt part of the town with mixed families, businesses, friends, colleagues, clubs and associations. “We cannot afford that everything should suddenly be cut off; nor can we relinquish a sector of our citizens.” And the mayor said for years the sons and daughter of Spanish families had travelled to the UK to seek opportunities to study and work – and if talks failed to limit the damage of ‘Brexit’ that too would be “severely restricted”; while those already a broad could find their lives “in a precarious situation.” Mr Chulvi said British citizens also formed charities to aid the wider community. “They are the first to offer help when necessary, to ask for justifiable improvements to local areas and urbanisations, to defend our natural heritage, to show interest in our traditional culture, to invigorate our business; and, ultimately, to make the town what it is.” He said Valencia´s President Ximo Puig had already said the regional government would not “abandon” its British residents and visitors. “We will fight where necessary to insure there is not discrimination,” added Mr Chulvi. “We are going to do this because they are residents of this town just like us. “It is possible to enjoy these rights without belonging to the EU as evidenced by reciprocal agreements that Spain has with Bolivia, Cape Verde, Chile, Columbia, Korea, Ecuador, Iceland, Norway, New Zealand, Paraguay, Peru, and Trinidad and Tobago.”

Poppy Appeal Dinner by Jack Troughton THE ROYAL British Legion’s Mojacar Branch raised 960€ at its annual Poppy Appeal Dinner and Dance at the town’s Pueblo Marina Hotel. Kay Francis and Laura Blackman provided the music and everyone enjoyed the evening; with all proceeds going to the Legion’s Welfare Fund. Tonight (Friday 4th November) the branch is staging a Fish n Chip Supper and Quiz at the Beachcomber Restaurant in Mojacar Playa. The meal is from 7.30pm and costs 6.50€ and the quiz is at 8.30pm, entrance is 2€ per person. Remembrance Sunday is 13th November and a church service is being held at 10.45am in the Anglican church of Mojacar. Lunch follows at Sensations Restaurant in the town. 115 not out byJames Martin Spain’s oldest woman celebrated her 115th birthday on Sunday and remains the longest living Spaniard on record.

Ana Vela Rubio was born in Córdoba on October 30th 1901 and moved to Barcelona in the 1940s to work as a dressmaker and still lives in Spain’s second city. She now lives in an old people’s home – where she is regarded as ‘very special’ but gets no special treatment - which is close to her daughter, who is 89-years-old. “She doesn’t look 115. We have residents a lot younger who look older than Ana does,” said David González, director of the La Verneda home for the elderly in Barcelona. “Although she’s very special to us, we don’t treat her as a 115-year-old lady; we treat her as one of the group. “She’s always been a super-friendly, super-affectionate and very optimistic person – perhaps that’s the secret to her long life. In June, Ana took the crown as the longest living Spaniard ever to be recorded when she reached 114 years and 221 days old, surpassing the record of María Antonia Castro, an Andalucian who died over twenty years ago.

Thrones filming in Spain GAME OF Thrones actors and film crews have been spotted in northern Spain filming new scenes for Series 7 of the fantasy blockbuster scheduled for screening next year. The beach at Itzurun in the Basque Country has become a key location with Emilia Clarke (pictured) – who plays Daenerys Targaryen – was joined on set by Peter Dinklage, her sidekick Tyrion Lannister in the hit series; with Kit Harington (Jon Snow) and Liam Cunningham, who plays Ser Davos Seaworth. Merry Movember Bringing the diminutive word ‘Mo’ - meaning moustache - and ‘November’ together, this annual event aims to raise awareness of men’s health issues. by James Martin Movember, also known as No Shave November, is for perfectly ordinary men to brave the task of growing a moustache to raise money for charities fighting prostate and testicular cancers, and mental health issues such as depression. By taking part in Movember, men also help to raise awareness of men’s health in a very public and obvious way. Movember started in Melbourne, Australia in 2003, when a group of friends decided to revive an old fashioned trend - the moustache. At that time about 30 people took part, and the event has got more popular ever since - with women also supporting it. Last year more than 5 million people - referred to as ‘Mo Bros’ and ‘Mo Sistas’ - supported Movember, with countries taking part including Germany, Hong Kong and the UK.

Cheryl is the face of Childline Former X Factor judge Cheryl has been announced as the new face of the charity Childline and reach out to kids in a new campaign. The ex-Girls Aloud singer will front a film which sees her voice replaced by young people talking about their problems. It includes a boy too frightened to tell his dad he is gay and a teenage girl who talks about being sexually abused at home. The charity believes the former X Factor judge will help bring its work to “a whole new audience”.

Spirits in the night THOUSANDS OF scary creatures great and small were out and about the streets of Spain on Monday night to celebrate the annual festival of Halloween. by Jack Troughton In many towns parties were held over the weekend but the evening of ‘trick or treat’ came alive on 31st October. And the church square in Moraira was packed with children – and adults – in fancy dress... with hardly a scary clown in sight. The party is thrown each year by Teulada Moraira Lions Club, introducing many people to traditional Halloween games with treats available for youngsters; food and drink for adults.

Sanchez faces taxing times ARSENAL SUPERSTAR Alexis Sanchez is alleged to have defrauded the Spanish taxman of almost 100,000€ when he played for top La Liga side Barcelona. by James Martin Spanish media reported on Wednesday the player is to face an accusation of defrauding the public purse of 983,443€ during 2012 and 2013 – a claim strongly denied by his representatives. In a statement, Sanchez’s agent Fernando Felicevich said: “Alexis Sanchez alaws imposed by the countries where he has resided. “We ask the press and public at large for the upmost respect until the completion of the ongoing administrative and judicial process.” As in other cases involving players based in Spain in recent years, it is the income generated from image rights that has come under the spotlight. And it is said Sanchez ceded his image rights to what prosecutors see as a merely instrumental company in Malta to avoid declaring tax in Spain. Sanchez’s former Barcelona teammates Lionel Messi and Javier Mascherano and Bayern Munich midfielder Xabi Alonso have also been investigated by the Spanish authorities for income derived from their image rights. Messi, the five-time World Player of the Year, and his father were sentenced to 21 months in jail in July for tax fraud of over 4 million euros.

Presidential problems THE UNITED States of America faces a tough question if Hilary Clinton wins the race to become the next President – what is the correct title for husband Bill? by Jack Troughton The uncertainty has followed Mrs Clinton throughout her campaign and apparently triggered thousands of Google searches.

In the US, the couple in the White House are traditionally referred to as ‘President and First Lady’. There has never been a male presidential spouse but across the country the official title for the role of a husband to a State Governor is ‘First Gentleman’; and there are currently six. And the title has trended across social media after Mr Clinton made a speech at the Democratic National Convention. FGOTUS or First Gentleman of the United States does not flow off the tongue as easily as FLOTUS, the acronym for the First Lady. The conundrum has captured the public’s imagination ahead of voting next week. Some have suggested ‘First Dude’, while a second idea is ‘First Laddie’, possibly a reference to Mr Clinton’s Celtic roots, or even ‘First Mate’. A further complication is that former presidents remain ‘Mr President’ in acknowledgment of the earlier title. It means they could become Mr and Mrs President; but if Hilary Clinton gets the hot seat, it might be more correct to be Mrs and Mr President. Mr Clinton admits he does not care about a title as long as his wife wins the election, saying: “I’ll be the ‘First Volunteer’. I hope to be the best free labour she’s got.”

Helping children by Jack Troughton FREEMASONS AND their ladies from the Dama de Elche Lodge presented cheques totalling 1,665€ to help youngsters after fund raising at various social functions during 2015-16. Mary Chambers represented the Butterfly Children’s Charity, DEBRA and said the 750€ would support the ‘Outreach Project’ which allows nurses to visit patients in their own homes to help with daily treatments, and provide advice, support and respite care. Another cheque for 750€ was presented to Annette English of the Elche Children’s Care Home towards providing heating oil over the winter – the lodge has given donations totalling 2,350€ over the last three years to keep youngsters warm and provide hot water. Annette presented Past Master John Swithenbank and Charity Steward Trevor Bagnall with a certificate of thanks – and gave a second certificate to the Ladies of the Lodge for a donation of 165€ to the home, used to buy gifts for the children. Rascals keep giving VARIETY SHOW group The Rascals made an 800€ donation to Maureen Payne after raising the cash by performing its summer show in Los Montesinos. Thanking the group, Maureen said the money would go towards the purchase of a new industrial iron. Earlier, money given to social services in Los Montesinos purchased two hoists and the final donation of proceeds from the show will be given to Alzheimer’s. La Vila takes the sting out of The Bees by Tony Fox The local derby between the two unbeaten teams at the top of their league resulted in a 34-3 win for La Vila against Les Abelles; aka The Bees. In doing so, Villajoyosa avenged its only league defeat of last season - which was also away to Les Abelles. And in a pulsating match two La Vila players were yellow-carded in the first half but even with the one man advantage for a quarter of the game the home team were outplayed in all areas. With the first try for La Vila coming seven minutes after kick off, Les Abelles scored a penalty at the 25-minute mark; but this was the extent of their scoring ability. At half time the score was 10-3. The second half saw four more La Vila Tries the last coming in the 39th minute. Matias Jara failed with only one conversion continuing his superb form with the boot. Try scorers were Paco Martinez, Nicolas Ponce, Mathew Surman and one penalty try. La Vila now top the league with 30 points just one point ahead of nearest rivals St. Cugat and the two teams meet on November 13th at Villajoyosa, which should be a match to savour. The next La Vila game is away to newly promoted Rugby Murcia. Claim against the bank Although they are not very common in Spain, Spanish mortgage loans in foreign currency, such as Swiss Francs, Japanese Yen, and US Dollars, are causing great harm to those consumers who contracted them. These types of mortgages - known as multicurrency or foreign currency mortgages or loans â&#x20AC;&#x201C; carry a higher risk than the normal elements of an ordinary mortgage due to the fact that they are linked to other currencies. And they have resulted in very high economic losses to the consumers who took out the loans. Therefore, if your bank did not inform correctly about the risk of this type of loan, and if you are suffering the consequences of it, you can claim in court to nullify the clauses referring to foreign currency or multicurrency clauses of your mortgage, and requesting as per the contract itself, that the loan should be as agreed in Euros, rather than the appropriate foreign currency. The consequences of this type of claim is that the loan should be understood as contracted in Euros from the start, and the bank must return the overpaid amount throughout the life of the loan plus interest, and recalculate the amortization table mortgage , as if it was engaged from the outset in Euros, which usually involves thousands of Euros. Celebrating a first decade by Jack Troughton THE VIVACE Classical Choir is celebrating its 10th year with new season and performances of Sir Karl Jenkins’ modern work ‘The Armed Man’. Quesada residents Elly Van der Vecht and Andrew Duckworth founded the group in 2006 after realising there was nothing in the area for singers interested in classical music. The choir, which started with 16 members with Musical Director Tom Pargeter, helped by a number of friends, staged the first concert in 2006; a performance of the Christmas selection of Handel’s Messiah. Across the 10 years, the ranks of the Vivace Classical Choir - based in San Miguel de Salinas - have swelled to some 60 members; with Tom planning programmes to include

pieces such as Faure’s Requiem. Vivaldi’s Gloria, Mozart’s Requiem, a concert of Opera Choruses, and Carmina Burana. And Tom is still at the helm, still moving forward and planning an exciting season – he wanted something different and challenging for the choir to take on to celebrate its special anniversary. Therefore the season starts with ‘The Armed Man’, written for the Millennium and a ‘Mass for Peace’. Sir Karl wrote it when the Kosovan war was in the headlines. In 2016, the news is of the war in Syria and surrounding countries and the call for peace is just as a relevant. The work is based on a 15th Century poem of the same name. It is an exciting piece which takes an audience

through the preparations for war, the action and its consequences; ending with a celebration when peace is restored. Its power is increased by the addition of flute, piccolo, brass and percussion to the piano accompaniment. The choir welcomes eight musicians from the San Miguel Union Musical, who join regular accompanist David Ward Campbell. The first night is at the Casa de Cultura in San Miguel de Salinas on Friday 2nd December at 8pm. Tickets are 5€ and available from choir members or by calling Douglas Brown on 659 616 356. Atrial fibrillation increases the chance of having a stroke for up to five times Early and continuous action improves risk of brain damage Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most severe and frequent in adults and a major cause of stroke, cardiac arrhythmia. As age increases, so does the frequency of cases in the population. Numerous studies show the close relationship between stroke and AF: people with it have four to five times more likely to suffer an embolic stroke. In fact, in Spain 11% of strokes are caused by AF. This is corroborated by Dr. Mirko Alavena specialist in the Neurorehabilitation Unit of Quironsalud Hospital Torrevieja, who says that “the risk of stroke associated with AF increases markedly with age, up 23.5% at advanced ages from 80 to 89 years. In addition, stroke due to AF tend to be severe, with an increase of 60% disability. “ AF is very often asymptomatic and only detected during regular checkups. Among the risk factors that can cause it are hypertension, diabetes, aging, heart failure, overactive thyroid or other hormonal problems or consumption of large amounts of alcohol or coffee. “Some of these factors such as aging, cannot be changed, but others like control-

ling blood pressure, diabetes, smoking or avoiding excessive alcohol intake can help prevent both AF and strokes” highlights the specialist, who advises to make cardiology reviews periodically to reduce the chances of suffering a stroke. Early and continuous action improves the risk of brain damage that occurs after the patient has suffered a stroke, an accident, an infection or cardiac arrest. A neurological injury from one of these accidents can cause difficulties in movement, communication and performing common tasks such as dressing, causing serious disturbances in family and social fields. Dr. Mirko Alavena emphasizes that “the rehabilitation must be as early as possible by a specialized and thorough multidisciplinary team of experienced and trained professionals to seek recovery functions through brain mechanisms neuroplasticity “. This line of immediate care is essential in Neurorehabilitation, which allows receiving treatment in hospital whilst integrating other specialties, including if necessary the ICU or ambulatory care. Pioneering use of new technologies The specialist points out “the training support to families and patients, in addition to

One of the true greats of this genre was Gene Wilder, and I am hopeful with his passing in August that documentaries and films will be made showing what an outstanding talent he was. He had already been in two classics ´The Producers´ and ´Start the revolution Without me´ when Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory came along in 1971, and according to Variety, the movie is reportedly being rebooted. It will be set before the events of Roald Dahl’s book but will not be an origin tale … oh dear oh dear. Grab yourself a smile with … Blazing Saddles … Young Frankenstein … The World’s Greatest Lover … The Woman in Red … See No Evil, Hear No Evil ... five of my fav Gene Wilder movies.

I felt Gary Barlow was badly treated during the Take That breakup in 1996, and since have always wanted him to do well, and that he´s certainly done. I wasn´t over keen on him being an X Factory judge, but leaving after two years made it ok again. Felicity Jones won a Best Actress Academy nomination for her role as Stephen Hawking´s wife in ´The Theory of Everything´ in 2014, and is currently out punting her role opposite Tom Hanks in ´Inferno,´ but the young lady from the Midlands has her mind set on other things. Felicity got noticed on the late 90´s TV show ´The Worst Witch, ´ when she played Ethel Hallow, and when asked in a recent interview if she might be involved in the re-boot of the show she said “Yes! Fantastic’ ‘I’d love to … I’D LOVE TO!’ I´d love to play a teacher, or a witch that would be awesome!” However the BBC said “if we had a magic wand we’d love to have Felicity Jones on CBBC’s The Worst Witch.” Heavy bulls**t telling us it aint gonna happen!

Malcolm in the Middle, ´00 -´06, starred Bryan Cranston as Hal, the much put upon husband and father of Malcolm and his three brothers. Last week on late night USTV he admitted that he and his brother were once arrested on suspicion of murder. “We took a two-year motorcycle ride across the United States in the mid-seventies” he said “picking up jobs here and there, and one time worked at a Polynesian restaurant on Daytona Beach. A guy named Peter Wong was the chef, a good chef, but a horrible person, so much so the he got himself murdered. With the Cranston boys having left the area the police came and asked if anybody talked about hurting or killing Peter Wong?’ to which the waiters said, ‘Yeah, all of us,´ before adding the names of the Cranston brothers to the list! Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin

Colloquialisms To continue our little rest from Spanish grammar, this week we are going to look at slang words and expressions. Actually this subject is an absolute minefield for a number of reasons.

Firstly, there are words that mean one thing in Spain and something quite different in South America, and vice versa. Then you have the whole subject of what you say and how you say it. I’m a great believer in the idea that there are no real “bad” words; it is the intention behind the word that is bad. One person may get away with really strong language which would sound terrible coming from someone else. On the other hand a fairly innocent word like “tonto”, which may be used affectionately in the spirit of “you silly billy”, could be a dangerous insult if said in anger to a fellow road user! Then there’s the generation problem. You might think you’re saying something that bang up-to-date, but which in fact dates you way back in the last century. Or you may just look too old to use the latest teenage slang. And finally, there is the problem of what you can “get away with” in a foreign language. Sometimes foreigners just sound odd using slang expressions that are not in the native tongue. Well, if none of that has put you off, here are just a few, innocuous phrases which you might just manage! I have some stronger stuff on my website under “Spanish Word Lists” so none of this is X-rated. Let’s start with a great one that means “No way!” We can say this with the usual “¡Qué va!” but even more expressive is “Ni de coña” - “not even as a joke”. It might sound rude, but I can assure you it isn’t. You no doubt know all about the verb “gustar” - well a slangy equivalent is “molar”. “Esto me mola” – “I like this”. (The phrase “I dig it” comes to mind but I’m trying to avoid carbon dating myself). You can also exclaim simply, “mola” or “a qué mola” (it’s great isn’t it) or something like that. A similar sort of emotion is expressed with the word “guay” (pronounced rather like “why”). This is at least 25 years old but still alive and well. I know this because when I first came to Spain I was teaching a group of teenagers and one of them said “guay” when I told them what they had to do next in class. I replied “Well, because ….” much to their amusement. We all know about people who are “odd balls”, as in “he’s a bit of an odd ball”. In Spanish he (or she) is “un bicho raro” – “a rare beast” or “strange creature”. I’ve come across a lot of those in my time. When we’re really fed up we tend to say we’re “fed up to” somewhere (like the back teeth). The Spanish do the same, using the expression “estoy hasta … “ The most standard and polite form is “estoy hasta las narices” (I’m up to my nostrils, just a little higher than the back teeth). However, they can be up to other less polite but lower down parts of the body. Another word I learnt from my earlier teenage teaching years was “rollo” (a roll or scroll) in other words, something really long and boring. “¡Qué rollo!” would be the standard response to grammar exercises and the like. “Rollo” can also refer to the atmosphere between people though. I like going to a club or class because of the “buen rollo” or I’ve stopped going to an activity because of the “mal rollo”. Finally, the Spanish, and especially the young Spanish, love cutting words in half. “Porfa” is “por favor”, “finde” is “fin de semana”, “depre” is “depresión” etc. I was very brave the other day and made one of these up myself, as I referred in an e-mail to a Spanish friend to “los jubis”, meaning “jubilados” or retired people. Don’t worry I didn’t say anything too bad and I think she understood what I meant!

The ultimate makeover: Fish & chips Ingredients For the chips 800g unpeeled, even-size Maris Piper or King Edward potato 2 tbsp olive oil For the peas 300g frozen garden pea 1 tbsp olive oil 2 tsp lemon juice For the fish 650g (approx) skinless haddock, hake or cod fillet from a sustainable source, cut into 4 equal-size pieces 50g self-raising flour, plus 1 tbsp 50g cornflour 1 egg white 125ml ice-cold sparkling water 1 lemon, cut into wedges 600ml sunflower oil, for frying Method 1. Scrub the potatoes, cut into 1.5cm thick lengthways slices, then cut each slice into 1.5cm thick chips. Tip the chips into a large saucepan, pour in enough water to just cover, bring to the boil, then lower the heat and gently simmer for 4 mins only. Drain, tip onto a clean tea towel, pat dry, then leave to cool. Can be done 1-2 hrs ahead. Heat oven to 220C/fan 200C/gas 7. Put a large shallow non-stick roasting tray in the oven with 1 tbsp olive oil and heat for 10 mins.

2. Transfer the chips to a bowl and toss in the remaining oil using your hands. Tip out in a single layer onto the hot roasting tin. Bake for 10 mins, then turn them over. Bake 5 more mins, then turn again. Bake for a final 5-8 mins until crisp. Drain on paper towels. 3. While the chips are in the oven, cook the peas in boiling water for 4 mins. Drain, then tip into the pan and lightly crush with the back of a fork. Mix in the oil, lemon juice and freshly grated pepper. Cover and set aside.

4. The fish can also be cooked while the chips are in the oven. Pat the fillets dry with paper towels. Put the 1 tbsp of flour on a plate and use to coat each fillet, patting off the excess. Pour the oil for frying into a heavy, medium non-stick wok or wokshaped pan. Heat to 200C (use a thermometer so you can check the oil stays at that temperature). Mix 50g flour, cornflour, a pinch of salt and some pepper. Lightly whisk the egg white with a balloon whisk until frothy and bubbly, but not too stiff. Pour the water into the flour mix, gently and briefly whisking as you go. The batter shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be completely smooth. Add the egg white, then lightly whisk in just to mix. Try and keep as many bubbles as you can so the batter stays light. Cooking two pieces of fish at a time, dip them in the batter to coat, let some of it drip off, then lower into the hot oil using a slotted spoon. Fry for 5-6 mins, making sure the oil

stays at 200C and turning the fish over halfway through so it is golden all over. Lift out with a slotted spoon, drain on kitchen paper.

Check the oil is back up to 200C, then repeat with remaining fish. Reheat the peas and serve with the fish, chips and lemon wedges.

Injury hit Monte, who had Sami, Carlos, Fabian and Juanes all sidelined, took the lead when Maccan netted on 18 minutes, with new signing Aure scoring after 29 minutes, to put the hosts 2-0 ahead. Orihuela pulled one back with what turned out to be a consolation goal following a free-kick, that saw defender Koko booked, to reduce the arrears to 2-1 at half time. Fran increased Montesinos’s lead with a goal early in the second half, thereafter coach Carlos Perez replaced Dario, Aure, and Koko, with substitutes Carlos Valente, Vazquinho and Fernando. Vazquinho put Montesinos 5-1 in front with a brace of goals - prior to being red-carded by the referee - following an alleged misconduct gesture. And man of the match Maccan (pictured) wrapped up the goals in injury time, when netting Montesinos’ sixth goal to give them an emphatic 6-1 victory. Skoda Rapid A fresh looking family hatchback that masquerades as a more sophisticated saloon.

That’ll be the cleverly designed Skoda Rapid because when looking at the side profile you could be mistaken for thinking it’s a saloon but open the boot lid and it’s most definitely a hatch; with a massive amount of space too. The 1.6TDi model travels to 60mph from standstill in 10 seconds; living up to its name. During my time with this vehicle I have discovered that it shares something in common with my ageing fifth generation Ford Fiesta. Its friendly face created by the headlamps and large mouth-like grille. I only realise this as another Rapid heads towards me as I sit in a traffic jam. It’s what the designers at Skoda call clean crisp lines. And to think that Ford was doing this back in 2002. It’s made me look at my little Fiesta in a whole new light. The Skoda is well-built and reliable. There’s a satisfying clunk to the doors and it’s comfortable. Now that there are three children in the Saunders family it is necessary to have three cumbersome child seats in the rear. These just about fit in our little and old Ford Fiesta. As the Rapid is wider I was expecting there to be more space in between our tiny occupants but surprisingly this does not seem to be the case.

What the Rapid might lack in external design it makes up for inside by what Skoda refers to as Simply Clever features to make life easier. These include the ticket holder at the A-pillar and the ice scraper in the fuel cap, which doubles up as a magnifier. It has cornering front fog lights. It becomes clear that over a long journey the seats are not that comfortable for my wife, although the driver’s seat seems fine. At 70 mph there is also a noticeable drone to the diesel unit from inside the cabin. The cruise control function is on the same stalk as the indicators on the left hand side of the steering wheel. On occasions indicators end up flashing when the cruise control has been pushed too forcefully. And on a long journey constant operating of this cruise control can result in a numb index finger due to turning it on and off. On a sunny day the dashboard reflects on the windscreen which is off-putting. Depending on speed the Rapid returns anywhere from 30mpg to more than double that amount helped by its automatics stop/start. Put your foot down in second gear and there is some real

oomph and do this on a sunny day with the windows down and quiet children in the back while the stereo blasts out Road to Hell by Chris Rea and life really is good. Something else that is pleasing is the amount of light in the car, which helps make for a happy driver and passengers. Keeping Children Safe Using the correct and approved seat for a child reduces the risk of serious injury by 95%, as long as they are used correctly. All too often we witness children being carried on the laps of adults or without an appropriate seat, two of the most common and dangerous practices when it comes to transporting children. Children under 1.35 metres in height must sit in the rear seats, although there are a couple of exceptions, and they must be in a seat appropriate to their height and weight. It is advisable that children sit in rear-facing seats until they reach 3 or 4 years of age, as this significantly reduces the risk of injury in the event of an impact. Countless crash test scenarios have been acted out in controlled conditions, all of which collectively prove that rear-facing in the earliest part of the child´s development significantly reduces risk. It is also important that the restraining systems are fitted and used correctly, as per the manufacturer’s instruction, with the child firmly secured in the seat and unable to release themselves from any of the straps. The MAPFRE foundation released a report in October which supports the conclusion of the test data, stating that “virtually all serious or fatal injuries are preventable, and it is essential to improve the knowledge of parents about the use of SRI, as the lower band belt passes over the bones of the pelvis and not over the child’s stomach; or the top of the belt passes over the middle of the sternum and collarbone, without being too close to the neck”. The report also makes it clear that the adults in vehicles have a responsibility to not only ensure that children are kept safe, but that their actions and attitudes to safety systems are impeccable, so as to educate children of their importance.
