Hearts still beating

Horses and riders

No horsing around

By Jack Troughton A SOLEMN group of horses and riders waited in the streets of Benitachell before receiving an annual blessing in the last celebration of Sant Antoni – the patron saint of animals – staged in the Marina Alta during 2015.

JAVEA HEARTBEAT is a fledgling association hoping to offer support, rehabilitation advice and counselling to those who have undergone a “frightening” brush with heart disease. It is the idea of artist Annie Ford – whose husband Peter survived two recent heart attacks – who believes there is a wealth of experience amongst expats who could help. And she has already recruited specialist UK charity The British Heart Foundation – with specialist information leaflets and DVDs on their way to Spain. “I wanted to find out how and where Peter could exercise after his heart attacks and to speak to people about his condition – unfortunately there’s absolutelya nothing here,” she told RTN. “And in terms of support, there is nothing. There are charities for cancer, for children, and for cats and dogs but nothing for people who have had heart problems or suffered strokes. “We just wanted to talk to people who had been in a similar situation, to know what to do and how you should feel.” She said Peter suffered a “massive” heart attack in the middle of the night in their Javea home – she called an ambulance and her neighbours. AMBULANCE “The ambulance didn’t arrive – Peter actually said ‘goodbye’. It was terrible. I didn’t know what to do, he just collapsed,” remembered Annie. Continued on page 8

No debate over fuel payment by Jack Troughton THE HOUSES of Parliament bid to halt new regulations preventing British expat pensioners in Spain receiving the Winter Fuel Payment has failed. A rarely used Early Day Motion to stop the Statutory Instrument – known as a ‘prayer’ – did not force Iain Duncan Smith, Secretary of State for the Department of Works and Pensions, to debate the issue. Tory MP Roger Gale, who tabled the motion, said despite the support of 19 other MPs the issue would never be debated in the house unless the Government gave it time as a ‘gift’. “It was always a long shot.” The new regulations are

now law but only come into force in September ahead of the winter of 2015/16. Currently the payment is £200 for retired people rising to £300 for those over 80. Spain is one of seven countries to lose the benefit under a controversial temperature test introduced by the DWP. The European Commission, which will investigate whether removing the payment to those in ‘warm’ countries is discriminatory and against EU law, cannot act until the new rules come into force on 21st September. However, British MPs are planning a petition to the European Parliament and a number of MEPs are understood to be raising the legality of the British Government’s move in Brussels.

Port of Valencia faces first dock strike in 12 years STRIKES THAT will put half of the working day on alternate hours began on Thursday in the Port of Valencia causing delays in loading and unloading of cargo and likely diversions for ships. An agreement on stowage that should have been signed on Wednesday failed to happen leading to strikes called for Thursday and Friday of this week pending further arbitration. The Port Authority (VPA) and the Stevedoring Company of Valencia (Sevasa-Sagep) warned of the serious damage that could result from downtime in vital Port traffic and its consequential effect on road transportation for the rest of the country.

Jihad charters drug ships from Morocco and Europe POLICE SUSPECT that some of the cargo of the 19 ships carrying 244,000 kilos of hashish and 424 kilos of cocaine in the Eastern Mediterranean route that have been seized during the last two years may have been intended to finance Jihadists.

Customs officers board the Portuguese ‘Eiskos’ a boat carrying 19,000 kilos of drugs

by Jan Gamm THE SHIPS begin their journeys in Morocco, stopping in Libya and Egypt before going on to Spain, France, Italy, Greece and Turkey. The traffickers use cheap, shabby vessels that are usually in poor condition but with efficient navigation systems. The 19 boats yielded the seizure of 244,000 kilos of cannabis resin and 424 kilos of cocaine. The value of the drugs on the hashish market alone would be in the region of €381 million.

New protocols for sexual offenders coming into Spain NEW PROTOCOLS have been established following an instruction from the secretary of State for the Guardia Civil and also the National Police when dealing with foreigners arriving in Spain who have been registered on Sexual Offenders Registers in their country of origin. The Interior ministry is calling for stricter controls on such persons entering Spain who have committed crimes of a sexual nature in other countries.

Spain’s bargain basement King KING FELIPE VI is continuing his mission to cut the costs of the Spanish monarchy and improve the royal family’s public image following a series of unfortunate scandals in recent years by accepting a 20% lower salary than that of his predecessor King Juan Carlos. In a statement issued this week the palace has confirmed that the King will receive 234,204€ per year as Head of State compared to King Juan Carlos’ 293,000€. Queen Letizia will receive 128,808€ and the former King, Juan Carlos, will be paid €187,356. The palace budget stays at €7.8 King Felipe million.

Malpractice eye surgeon conceals assets to avoid paying out

Adrián Pérez

by Jan Gamm ADRIÁN PÉREZ, a young man who lost his eye following treatment found to be negligent was awarded with 57,753€, yet has received only 5.54€ in compensation. In the resulting investigations it emerged that the eye specialist involved in the case, José Antonio Outeiriño, who has treated a number of national celebrities, has a string of other malpractice claims against him including one for 100,000€ in 2009 and another for 16,000€ in 2008. After Outeiriño

performed an initial operation on Adrián, he stopped billing the family: it is thought that he was then concerned with trying to repair the damage he had allegedly done. Eventually Adrián lost his eye and must now wear a prosthesis. Outeiriño is suspected of concealing his assets, making it difficult for the authorities to realise compensation for his victims. Outeiriño is registered with the College of Physicians of Madrid and possesses a professional license to practice. Outeiriño’s Madrid Clinic has refused to comment.

RTN launches new edition RTN PROUDLY celebrates its milestone 800th issue this week by launching its fourth edition, ‘RTN Marina Baixa/Benidorm’. by Jack Troughton AVAILABLE TO readers for the first time today (Friday), the weekly paper incorporates the monthly RTN Benidorm and appears by popular demand of both readers and advertisers. It makes the Costas’ favourite free newspaper unique in having four separate editions, with RTN North dividing into ‘RTN Marina Alta and La Safor’ and ‘RTN Marina Baixa and Benidorm’; together with RTN South and RTN Costa Calida. Geoff Gartland, Managing Director of the RTN Newsgroup, is delighted to be able to offer the readers and advertisers the new edition. “It is an excellent way of celebrating our 800th birthday,” he said. “RTN Benidorm was a huge success but we found people wanted it more regularly than just on a monthly basis and advertising clients have certainly been asking for us to offer it weekly. “And from today, here it is, RTN Marina Baixa. It has coming into being by popular demand. It insures readers in the area enjoy more local news directly affecting them while still keeping Danny Wilkinson, Sales Director

up to date with what is going on across the whole of the region and elsewhere. UNIQUE “It makes the whole RTN brand stronger by having four editions and makes us unique. No one can compete with that.” Geoff said dividing RTN North into two independent newspapers was always a long term goal and underlined the group’s commitment to the community. He said existing and potential advertisers could choose a target audience for their publicity, making a conscious decision to reach to a localised market or aim at the whole coast. And the timing of the move was also seen as a very positive step as Spain’s economy improved after the dark days of the recession. “Things are getting better and we want to be at the forefront of the recovery,” added Geoff. “It is important for us to be able to move with the times.” CHAPTER The launch is another important chapter in the brand’s story. The first issue of Round Town News hit the streets on 14th October 1999 and was a snip with a cover price of 100 pesetas. However, times change and the decision was taken to make the newspaper free and it now keeps readers from La Safor to Murcia up to date with local, regional, national and international news. The look of the paper has also evolved. Round Town News was successfully re-launched as ‘RTN’ with a new masthead and a colourful look but always looking to serve the community. And being a thoroughly modern media company the interactive RTN website continues to go from strength to

strength. The content of all four issues is available online – even as a popular and easy to use virtual newspaper – and can be accessed from around the world, keeping everyone in touch. Also growing in importance is the use of Social media. RTN is active on Facebook and Twitter and readers enjoy joining the online community feel of the paper. For further information regarding the new edition contact Danny Wilkinson on 646 619 466 or by email danny@roundtownnews.com

Doctors allegedly implicated in baby theft

13-19 febRUARY 2015

THREE DOCTORS, now retired, have been accused of stealing a new-born baby from a private Alicante clinic in the eighties. by Jan Gamm DNA Testing by the Toxicology Institute shows that the remains of a new-born child do not correspond to the DNA of the mother who was informed that her baby was dead. The doctors are two gynaecologists and the presiding paediatrician

who all signed the death certificate at the time. It is thought that as many as 300,000 babies were taken from their mothers between 1960 and 1989 by a network of doctors, midwives, priests and nuns who then sold them to infertile couples for a price equivalent to that of a small city apartment.

Luisa Fernanda Marin Valenzuela (pictured) mother of nine children and grandmother to seven, endured a similar experience in 1974 in Zaragoza and is now searching for her son. Her case was dismissed last September when it was discovered that the doctor and the midwife involved are both dead.

Barcenas starts a dialogue with the press EX-PP TREASURER Luis Bárcenas has been talking to the Spanish Press about his incarceration in prison and his relationship with PP Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy. Barcenas was jailed in June 2013 pending trial for corruption and an alleged involvement in running a multi-million Euro slush fund for the Partido Popular. He was finally released on bail on 21st January. Barcenas says he spent an uncomfortable 18 months in prison, sleeping in Alpine clothing to keep warm in the chilly jail. He said that he “should never have trusted Rajoy,” denying that there had ever been a ‘pact of silence’ between him and the Spanish prime minister. He claims that he has been “manipulated” and also assured the press that he would not make the same mistake again.

Luisa Fernanda Marin Valenzuela also believes her baby ws stolen at birth

Toxic cloud after chemical blast

Three people were injured in an explosion at a chemical plant near Barcelona yesterday (Thursday) morning as a bright orange toxic cloud spread over the area. It is understood the explosion at the Simar factory at Igualada, 60km from Spain’s second city, was caused when two chemicals came into contact was they were delivered. People in six towns were warned to stay indoors as the toxic cloud spread – but this was later partially lifted when emergency services advised children, pregnant women, the elderly and those with breathing problems should still heed the precaution. Nitric acid – which is both toxic and corrosive – and ferric chloride were the chemicals involved. A lack of wind in the area meant the cloud took longer to disperse into the atmosphere.

Rotary working home and away by Jack Troughton PROUD ROTARIANS were again supporting community projects on Friday as they donated more than 1,855€ to three charities working in Spain and Africa. Paul Ridge, President of Rotary International Fellowship Costa Blanca North, and colleagues handed over three cheques before the weekly lunch at Los Leones Restaurant, Sol Park, Moraira. Stephen Carden, representing the Franciscan Hospice in Gandia, was presented with a cheque for 928.21€ for the purchase of a stainless steel serving trolley, a 27 litre catering pan, and a wheelchair for use in a shower.

Paul Ridge (fourth from left) leads the giveaway

The Director of Raquel Paya School for disabled children in Denia, Maite Marti received a cheque for 607.54€ which has bought toys for ‘free time’ in school; and improvements to the projector and motion picture screen in important audio-visual room. And Nikki Luxford of One Step Malawi received 320€ to purchase 40 mosquito nets for the charity working in the community of the African country.

Continued from front page “We got him into bed and kept him warm. The medics arrived and spent two hours in the house bringing him around.” Annie was not allowed to travel in the ambulance when it arrived and at hospital while Peter was rushed into intensive care, she was asked for a SIP card – they did not have one because they are early retirees – and then 2,000€. “They had taken Peter away and I didn’t know whether he was alive or dead – it was terribly frightening but by the next morning the doctors had stabilised him. I had been home, returned to the hospital and was asked for more money.” However, the couple did have private medical insurance and Peter was transferred to hospital in Benidorm for treatment after the company was contacted. “There must be so many people out there who feel very scared – it is not just about the patient but also their partner and family – because in a way I had a heart attack too,” added Annie. “I just want to make sure there is help available.” And so she hopes there are people in the area prepared to give up some time to help Javea Heartbeat. “It is all in its infancy at the moment. We need to see how many good souls are prepared to donate a bit of time with support, friendship, exercise and walking buddies – and of course professional help as well.” She said a “lovely nurse” had offered to help and she believed there was a former cardiologist living in the area. “We need to contact people who have survived, ex-health professionals, people who know something about cardiac care. “Peter’s cardiologist is really positive about Javea Heartbeat and hopes she too may be able to refer patients and also aims to start a cardiac rehab group.” The Parasol Care Centre in Javea has also offered the use of its premises to Javea Heartbeat for support groups and counselling. “I want it to be a non-fee paying self-support group, in other words people in the community supporting each other in times of very real need.” Anyone needing more information or willing to offer time to help the project can email javeaheartbeat@icloud.com

Annie with ‘The Living Picture’, a fund raising initiative for EMAUS

Rotarian Barry Lloyd told RTN said the cash was raised by staging raffles, a 2€ a head supplement on the cost of a lunch, a special Christmas raffle, and an annual auction. “It all goes into the pot,” he said. “And we now have a book exchange which contributes quite a bit over the year. “We take our nominated charities more or less in order and also ask members what charities they would like to support.”

Ondara to improve terraces free of charge THE CITY of Ondara, with the aim of promoting local hospitality, is to launch a new initiative to improve urban pavements and better accommodate terraces for licensed establishments that are presently using sections of the public roads for tables, chairs and umbrellas by introducing platforms to separate them from the road. Around 30 such premises are currently licensed to trade on or near public roads: Mayor Ximo Ferrando has confirmed that improvements will be made at no extra cost to proprietors and with as little disruption to trade as possible.

Javea wins innovation award

By Jack Troughton JAVEA HAS won a top award from Valencia’s Department of Industry for the town’s commercial management and support for the business community. The town was placed seventh from 110 entries in the government’s ‘Commercial Innovation’ scheme – improving on last year’s performance when it was in nineth place. Councillor Juan Luis Cardona received a certifícate from Maximo Buch, Valencia’s Minister for Industry, the Economy and Employment. Mr Cardona, a member of Xabia Democtrica, who runs the town hall’s business department was told it was “recognition for a job well done” and a reward for his work with businesses and associations and the various campaigns he had instigated to promote the economy. The politician thanked AFIC which advises entrepreneurs on starting a business and Javea’s business associations for their support in “revitalising” the town’s economy.

Parking problems

The great escape By Jack Troughton CANINE ESCAPOLOGIST ‘Tick’ spent 10 weeks out in the cold after vanishing through the cat flap of his new family’s home in Denia. The terrier type dog had been with his new owners for just two days after being adopted from the APASA shelter in Javea last November. And despite attempts to trace the adventurous 12-yearold, nothing was seen of tick until the animal charity received a call from the Local Police to say an old dog was wandering along the Jesus Pobre road in Javea. A very underweight tick is now under the care of a vet but it is thought will make a full recovery. Mandy Conway, APASA President, said Tick had been a guest of the shelter for a couple of years after being brought in with two puppies – possibly his sons. “He was in a disgusting state. You couldn’t see his face because his fur was so matted and he was covered in ticks and fleas,” she said. “However, once he got used to people and had his hair cut he was a lovely dog. “He was adopted in November but two days later he got out through the cat flap – his new owners were absolutely distraught.” She said APASA staff answered the police call and immediately realised they had found tick. “He was in a very weakened state and is now under veterinary care.”

JAVEA TOWN Hall is hoping to put the brakes on a move to end free parking on a site in the heart of the town’s port.

Javea Port

by Jack Troughton A private company has applied to central government for a three-year licence to introduce paid parking on the 1,235 square metre site – with room for 50 to 55 vehicles. The operator wants to charge drivers during the peak season – 12th June to

13th September this year – and also 10 days during the Easter holidays. The local authority has already outlined its opposition to the plan because of the existing scarcity of parking in the “heart” of Javea Port and there are fears losing more free parking will only increase congestion and could spark road safety problems.

And there are worries that controlled access – possibly by using a barrier – to any the site of paid parking would only make congestion worse. Mayor Jose Chulvi has criticised the “constant attempts” to privatise public areas of Javea over which the town hall has no direct control – and which would bring no benefit to the town.

Concordia Captain sentenced by Jan Gamm FRANCESCO SCHETTINO, the 54-year-old Captain of the cruise ship Concordia that hit rocks off the island of Gigilo, Italy in 2012 killing 32 of its 4,200 passengers, has been sentenced to 16 years’ imprisonment. Schettino’s lawyers argued that the Captain did not desert his post but accidentally fell into a lifeboat - greeting shivering survi-

vors on shore without even getting his feet wet. He was handed a series of sentences that included 10 years for manslaughter, five for causing a shipwreck, one for abandoning his ship, crew and passengers and an additional month for giving false information to port authorities. However, Schettino has not as yet been locked up: he has an entitlement to two legal appeals which could take years to process.

The Prado introduces a gallery for the blind MADRID’S PRADO Museum has launched an impressive 3-D gallery of classic paintings where the blind can experience and appreciate works by Goya, Da Vinci, Correggio and other masters. The works are reproduced with audio guides and information in Braille. And sighted visitors can also appreciate the exhibits, provided with blackout spectacles in order to experience the feel of works by artists such as Diego Velázquez up close. The layered replica paintings were made using the relief printing technique ‘Didú’, producing volume and texture on the works.

Beware of Valentine’s Day jewellery! THE VALENCIAN Association of Consumers and Users (AVACU) has warned that there are “serious irregularities” present in some jewellery products currently on sale in bazaars and budget stores throughout the country. The association conducted a study on the quality and safety of costume jewellery on sale in the run up to the biggest event of the year for jewellery sales – St Valentine’s Day. Tests revealed an “alarming” content of Cadmium, known to be highly toxic: some items tested showed a Cadmium content of thousands of times over the safety level. Laboratory head Gaspar Lloret said the high Cadmium content of these products is “no joke” warning that the chemicals found in the products he tested were “carcinogenic, toxic and could cause major disruption to the hormonal system.”

Humorous look at life by Jack Troughton ARTIST YONA Castro Hastie always looks on the bright side of life with her work and the 34 paintings currently on show in Gata de Gorgos are no exception. ‘The Belles of Bilbao’ is a current favourite with the Javea-based painter showing four ‘mature’ ladies out enjoying themselves – all dressed in their finery, with plenty of bling...and varicose veins. “I do like to capture the lighter and quirkier side of life” Yona told RTN at the Espai D’Art del Corral Del Pato in Gata. “And from now on I want to concentrate on pictures of people in situations that actually tell a story.”

Restaurant Corral del Pato proves an excellent choice to exhibit the 34 paintings of the show and the paintings can be viewed until 22nd March. Yona, who last exhibited at the restaurant in 2006, said: “It is a very impressive space to show off my paintings. Visitors can always enjoy some traditional Spanish cooking while they are here.” Born in Hastings – there is a view of the sea painted from where she lived as a child – Yona studied in Coventry and took a degree in graphic design at Kingston University. Three shells racket

WE COME to Benidorm every year: this year we are here for three months. I thought I thought the problem of the ‘three shells racket’ would have been abolished from the sea front, but as you know they are still here robbing the tourists and locals alike. Today under our balcony they stole a lady’s purse. I don’t know what the police are doing about it, but they do not seem interested in stamping it out. The watchers give an early warning of a police car, plus an unmarked one, and the gang do a quick exit. The situation is causing so much heartbreak. Each gang consists of around ten people, so you can imagine how many people they have to cheat to keep the gang in the style they are used to. I know most of the people caught in the trap are guilty of being a bit greedy and are trying to double their money: will they never learn? There are so many ways to catch these thieves, but as I stated previously the police seem to have lost interest. I would love to receive further information on this subject. Tom Steele

The blame game

THE RECENT election in Greece saw a socialist government brought to power. The new Leftist government made some outlandish promises considering the country is in such a serious financial crisis. Spain, and more pointedly the Costa Blanca, unfortunately sounds not dissimilar to the mess Greece has caused itself to

be in - they borrow money because they are in a selfinflicted mess, and now refuse to pay what they owe. The best way to deal with such irresponsible behaviour is tell the Leftist government they are not getting any more money until they pay back what they owe. If my irresponsible relative wanted to borrow money from me, I would tell him when he

pays back what he already borrowed, then he can have more. Greece, like Spain, needs to look in a mirror to see where the problem is. They need to admit they are messed up and not blame anyone else. Sadly humans tend to blame everyone but themselves. Robert Murray, Gran Alacant

I wish her the best of luck I WAS very sorry to hear of Martina Scheurer stepping down, she has tried her very best to do things for the coast and has always been very helpful and easy to contact. I have received a reply from her whenever I have written about a problem around our area here on the coast. When will Orihuela realise how much income we generate here on the coast and start to listen and help with the problems? They are only interested in the summer months and forget us in the winter months. I wish her the best of luck in the elections and thank her and her assistant Heike for all they have done. Meeting face to face THE HUMAN touch is a key element behind the newly launched ‘live’ social networking group CBWomen.com on the Costa Blanca. by Jack Troughton Social networking via websites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Linkedin have been a gigantic success across the world but organisers believe there is nothing like meeting ‘face to face’. And so last month CBWomen. com successfully launched its first networking event at the Black Turtle Restaurant in Javea’s Old Town. “I loved the ‘American-style’ networking exercises we did. It reminded me of speed dating – not that I have ever been to a dating

event!” commented Javea resident Amanda O’Shea. “It is good practice to get to know as much about somebody else in a short time with a few key questions.” BUILD Research reveals that social networking provides the most productive, proficient, and most enduring tactic in building relationships. CBWwomen.com brings together women new to the area wanting to make new friends and women looking for new

business contacts as well as looking for people to share projects, trips and events. It is fun, easy, and fast-paced – and packed with laughs. Membership is free, just register online at www.CBWomen.com and receive a regular newsletter full of interesting material and invitations to events. The group next meets at the Black Turtle on Saturday 21st February between 11am and 1.30pm, and again on Saturday 7th March Meeting at the Balearic Port in Denia, bereal tween 11am and 1.30pm. people

Fitting tribute to a Benidorm legend

It’s Carnival time

Benidorm Carnival by Irena Bodnarec

AS WELL as being Valentines Day, tomorrow is also the day of the colourful Carnival Parade in Benidorm. The datevaries each year as it depends on when Easter falls, but the procession always takes place on the Saturday before Ash Wednesday, which is forty days before Easter. A children´s parade takes place in the morning but the main adult one is in the evening, normally staring

around 9:30pm – but subject to change dependent on weather. The parade starts at the top of Calle Ruzafa, heads all the way down and finishes in the Town Hall Square. The entire route will be lined with spectators and music will be blasting out from speakers along the roadside. You will get to see a real mix of elaborate costumes – the Spanish certainly know how to dress up and party. So wrap up warm and head into the Old Town to join in the fun.

Carnival finishes on Tuesday 17th February with the ritual “Burial of the Sardine”. This signals the beginning of Lent, when you are suppose to give up something you enjoy for 40 days! There will be a solemn procession, which begins at around 9.30pm, starting at Plaza Mayor, winding through the Old Town and ending up at the Poniente Beach, where the sardine is ceremoniously buried on the beach to signal the start of Lent – don´t forget it´s also Pancake Day!

By Irena Bodnarec LAST SUNDAY afternoon Benidorm came together to pay tribute and celebrate the life of Pete Oliver – one of the town’s most talented veteran entertainers, who sadly passed away last month after a long illness. The Benidorm community best remembers him of late from his tribute band to The Bee Gees, which he performed in up until the end of 2010, when ill health forced his retirement. Numerous local artistes, including Gary George, ShoeWaddyWaddy, Midlife Crisis and Chess – the new Queen tribute, provided an afternoon of wall to wall entertainment to a packed audience at Levis Showboat. Wayne and Des together with fellow entertainer Jenny Renn organized the special event and would like to thank everyone that took part and came to support the afternoon. Over 2100€ was raised – in addition to a further 200€ which has been pledged for a signed Benidorm Series script which was donated by writer Derren Litten.

Fancy a free trip out?

BLANKET SEASON is upon us and the free trips on offer around the resort are a superb way to get out and see the local area. Calpe

Moraira

by Irena Bodnarec THEY ARE not a new concept, having been going for the last 30 years – but gone are the days of 3 hour pressure demonstrations! The fact that they are still about proves they are popular and that there is a market demand for them. But be aware that soliciting on the pavement is illegal here in Spain, so be careful if approached by so called reps offering you a free day out. If you are here on a package tour see your holiday rep who can show you the itineraries of the companies with which they collaborate. However, for those that have

Benissa

booked independently or want to see what else is on offer, head to the Round Town Travel office. Round Town Trips work together with NHP Ltd – the first and original blanket company who offered free trips back in the 80´s. Round Town Travel have 3 conveniently located offices – in the Rincon de Loix beside the Regente Hotel; on Calle Gerona opposite the Ambassador Hotel and in Albir, opposite the cricket ground. The multi-lingual staff are not on commission and will help you pick the most suitable trip based on your requirements. They currently offer 3 separate destinations – Calpe, Benissa and Moraira, with trips available 5 days per week, a combination of half and

three quarter days and most importantly, convenient pick up points around Benidorm. A short informative presentation is made about the health benefits of merino wool products – and those that are interested in purchasing any products leave their contact details – no deposits, bank details or credit card details are taken and then you continue to enjoy the rest of your free trip. You get good quality time at each of the destinations, giving you a taste of places just a short distance outside of Benidorm. If you do not want to sit through a presentation then you have the option of booking one of the many paid trips, which they have on offer.

Trafico education on Facebook by Keith Nicol THE GUARDIA Civil Trafico Department from Torrevieja have set up their own Facebook page. Not much surprising about that except that this page has been created to expressly educate expatriate drivers in Spain on traffic law, obligations, directives and to give hints and tips to make you a better and safer driver. Set up by a couple of agents from the Torrevieja Branch in their spare time, the information provided covers the southern Alicante region, down to San Pedro and inland to the AP7. The ‘page’ was launched last month and has surpassed 3,000 followers already. The agents involved said: “We would like to say thanks a lot for your support. We decided to create this Facebook page, because we know there are many misinformed drivers they have heard “Chinese whispers” about traffic matters, and we thought it could be a good idea to create a site where all expats could find true traffic information. Therefore, we are publishing articles about all traffic matters.” The informative Facebook page is well worth a browse over the articles published during the past few weeks. To make it interactive, they have added questions about driving law, speed limits, drink driving limits and are working hard with Trafico in Alicante and Madrid to sort out the confusion over the new laws regarding Driving Licences. They are also looking to answer your questions, which should be of an objective and general nature rather than a specific circumstance. Guardia Civil Trafico for the region is

headquartered in Torrevieja, where the majority of their fleet of cars, motorbikes, Q-Cars and Drink and Drug Testing Vans are located. They are fully aware that the interpretation of the law can vary from region to region and note: “We would appreciate knowing where you live, because we have received messages from Almería, Malaga, Javea,... to publish information we have received from the local police of your town. We also would like to know where you are from. We are providing this service in our ‘free-time’, so please be patient if you do not receive an immediate response, as we will do so as soon as possible. Thank you very much. We will keep working to give you a better service.” Even such things as the law for circumnavigating the dreadfully poorly designed Spanish Roundabouts can be found here, along with explanations, plus a look at new traffic laws and initiatives being introduced and tested around Spain, to help make driving safer and hopefully cut down on the high death and accident count in Spain. Nick, from Torrevieja’s Sunday Drivers Club remarked; “Their initiative should

Agents from Torrevieja’s Trafico department have launched a Facebook page to help educate drivers

be applauded by expatriates as its first time that we have had a point of contact with Trafico, in English, to discuss the problems and concerns of residents and visitors.” The

informative page can be found at:www.facebook.com/ TorreviejaTrafficDepartment or searching for N332.

The faceless profits of self-serve petrol stations in price war LOW COST petrol stations that operate a self-serve automated system and therefore have no use for employees are now in a ‘price war’, offering discounts of up to 15% as they try to claw business from their competitors. Four communities in Navarra, Andalusia, Castilla la Mancha and Aragon have banned such businesses. Unions and consumer groups complain that such organisations are a blight on Spain’s efforts toward re-employment and job security.

SPECSAVERS OPTICAS is to launch a national campaign on 16th February to collect unwanted glasses for Lions Clubs International. by Patricia Thompson The glasses will be presented to the Lions Clubs at the beginning of May, starting their ‘Recycle for Sight Month’ off in the best possible way. There are five Specsavers Opticas stores on the Costa Blanca: Calpe, Javea, Benidorm, Guardamar del Segura and Torrevieja, and they are calling on their local communities to get involved so that they can collect as many glasses as possible to beat their 2013 campaign which collected 4,436 pairs. Specsavers Opticas and Lions Clubs International are committed to helping the world to see, and this collection will change lives in areas where people desperately need access to glasses. Specsavers are asking community groups, schools and clubs to help them by having a collection and bringing them into their nearest store so glasses don’t go to waste. The campaign will run from 16th February to 29th April 2015: to find your nearest store visit www.specsavers.es. After the glasses are donated in store they are sent to the Lions Club’s recycling plant in Alicante where they are first separated into single vision, bifocals, varifocals and sunglasses. Waiting for flower power JALON VALLEY HELP has been forced to postpone its annual Almond Blossom Walk because of a lack of flowers on the trees.

MEMBERS OF the Valley Voices choir and Caritas charity volunteers went on a spending spree to stock up on essentials to give to needy families in the Jalon area. Following a successful Christmas concert at Jalon Church they headed for the town’s Mas y Mas supermarket to load trolleys with food and other necessities. And pictured are Jennie Tollan and Barbara Heggs of Valley Voices with Isabel Font Nadege and Ramona Bertomeu of Caritas. The choir is now rehearsing for a series of summer concerts – all will again help raise money for various local charities in the Vall de Pop. Valley Voices is a friendly group of singers and always looking for new faces – especially men – and a warm welcome is always extended to those wanting to join. Anyone interested can contact Joan by calling 96 551 8377 or email joanstockking@yahoo.co.uk or call Jennie on 96 558 1519 or email jenniemay38@hotmail.com. Alternatively, come along to a rehearsal at Casa Julia in Parcent at 9.45am on Monday mornings. Blossom expected soon

by Jack Troughton Winter has dragged its heels this year and so the popular stroll through the orchards will not take place until Sunday 22nd February. However, all other arrangements remain the same; meet outside the Tourist Centre in Jalon’s (Rastro) car park at

10am, wear sensible shoes and bring water and refreshments. Dogs are welcome if kept on a lead. The blossom walk is free but the charity always welcomes a donation to help it continue its community projects. And Friday 20th February sees Jalon Valley HELP stage its Charity Auction at the El Cid Restaurant.

Choir in spending spree

Viewing begins at noon and the sale begins at 1pm. And as usual there will be a huge array of lots on offer – with all profits from the auction going to the charity’s funds to help those in need. home and garden

by

Dick Handscombe Holistic gardener and author

February weather: good and bad points WELL THE past fortnight was rather wet - the longest spell of wet days for a long time. It certainly put a stop to continuing with a winter cut back and clean up but on the positive side, the rain kept temperatures up a few degrees, gave soils a good soaking and stimulated bulbs to sprout and even flower out of season. Going through Denia on the Costa Blanca the other day, a large clump of blue Agapanthus in the centre of a roundabout was in flower. Fortunately, the rain was generally light so did little to mar the reliable yellow displays of Euryops and winter Acacias, nor the Strelitzias or Callistemons (bottle brushes) in our inland garden, or early flowering English varieties of Magnolias in coastal gardens. When needing to harvest salad leaves during the wet weather, the conveniently-sited winter veggie plot comprising twenty black builders’ buckets just a few yards from the front door of the house has been a godsend. Just 15 metres into the garden Broccoli, Carrots, Italian Fennel, Swiss Chard, Cabbages and Cauliflowers are doing well in larger raised beds. Naturally all are being grown naturally and ecologically, loaded with beneficial vitamins and minerals and in some cases fibres. For instance Broccoli and Parsley are sources

of vitamins A,C and K - Rocket for the same plus Potassium; Leeks for vitamins A,C ,E and K plus Potassium, Iron, Calcium and Manganese; Peppers for vitamins B and C plus Iron, Potassium, Manganese, Magnesium and Selenium etc.. Information along these lines for popular vegetables, fruits, herbs, edible flowers and tree leaves are listed in the book ‘Living Well from our Garden - Mediterranean Style’ available from Amazon books. Away from the house the Olive trees in our Olive grove are responding instantly to their first real soaking for two years and pruning is pest delayed now until the first half of March. However, if there is a sunny hour or two during the next fortnight a ground feed of a soluble fertilizer will be very beneficial. Oranges and lemons are putting on extra weight fast with the welcome dampening of roots and leaves. Also flower buds are swelling fast and opening up even in the rain on perpetual A varieties of lemons. section Well – let’s hope that the last week of February of the black is back to sun so that we can get out in the bucket garden again without getting freezing cold or veggie wet - or both! plot

Noisy Neighbours and prohibited activities. Legal actions. WHEN ONE owns a flat or premises forming part of a community of neighbors or owners ( complex or urbanization), his right to enjoy his property is not unlimited, as the rights of the community of owners where he lives must be respected, its rules, common elements, etc., regarding the activities performed on the property, and possible renovations, services, etc. Thus, the Law 49/1960, of 21 July, Horizontal Property Law (LPH), in its article 7.1 regarding works, services, etc., says: “The owner of an individual property or premises is able to alter the architectural elements, facilities or services of it, as far as they do not affect or alter the building’s security, its general structure, its exterior configuration or condition, or prejudice the rights of other owners, and must report such works in advance to the person who represents the community. “ Also, a landlord cannot develop on a house or premises, any activity that is prohibited by the

statutes, resulting in harm to the community or any other neighbor, or contravene the general provisions about annoying, unhealthy, noxious, dangerous or illegal activities. Article 7.2 of the mentioned LPH, says that if any of these prohibited activities is performed, the president of the community, must in first place request to the owner or occupier of the property to cease the activity immediately. In the event that they continue with the activity, a legal action for cessation or termination could be filed. The court could agree the final cessation and termination of the prohibited activity and order compensation for damages if appropriate, and also, it can agree the deprivation of the right to use of the property or premises for a maximum period of three years, depending on the gravity of the infringement and the damage caused to the community. The danger of Alternative investments THIS WEEK yet another so called Alternative investment fund collapsed, these investment funds are un-regulated and are meant to give you a guaranteed return whilst being uncorrelated to the stock market. AN ALTERNATIVE investment that promised money for solar panels and 6.5 per cent annual returns – and claimed to be “protected, stable and socially responsible” – looks to have gone bust, potentially leaving thousands of UK investors out of pocket.

Secured Energy Bonds rode a wave of green investment popularity in 2013: their launch was oversubscribed and they attracted more than £7.5m of UK investors’ money. But the Australian company behind the bonds went into administration in November and this week Capita, the registrar, told investors that the bonds had been suspended and it had ceased providing services to the company. Significantly, these would be the first retail bonds to fail to meet their obligations – sending out a warning of the dangers of putting cash into nonregulated investments According to the Independent, a range of companies have turned to retail bonds to raise cash, attracting investors with interest promises

of 6 % or more. The likes of Severn Trent, Tesco and the Jockey Club had successful launches but their popularity led the City watchdog to warn that the bonds should only be sold to sophisticated investors due to the high risk, illiquidity and inflexibility. I am afraid the old adage “that if something seems too good to be true it most probably is “is all too often true at the end of the day. It’s so important to understand the risks when you stray from mainstream investments. Walking coast to coast DICK HANDSCOMBE remembers an epic 52-day trek across the Spanish Pyrenees in his latest book on a journey from the Bay of Biscay to the Mediterranean. by Jack Troughton WALKING ON the Spanish side of the mountain border with France, the 950km walk in 1988 came five years after he took early retirement following two cancer operations and a surgeon’s suggestion he take up the Mediterranean lifestyle as an alternative to chemo and radio therapy. ‘Our 52 day retirement adventure along the Spanish Pyrenees’ tells of the “lifetime odyssey” with walking partner Clodagh and the start of an active and healthy retirement. Dick and Clodagh later married and became two of the Costa Blanca’s leading experts on gardening and published a series of books together. Sadly, they have since parted. And Dick, who still writes a gardening column for RTN, described the Pyrenean walk as a “natural alternative to the busy Santiago de Campostella walk”. DIARY The book is a day by day diary of the walk from the wet rocky headland of Cap Higeur to the soft sand of the warm Mediterranean that he writes was “arduous but scenically beautiful thrilling and romantic walking”. The couple trekked seven days between rest days and alternated between nights of camping and comfortable mountain village beds and wholesome Pyrenean food and wine. Dick also pays tribute to the friendly Spanish mountain ’folk’, tells of forced changes to the route because of late snows on the mountains, and Mother nature’s part in the plot – the “amazing array” of birds, butterflies and flowers, as well as “majestic” wild horse and bulls. Still living the good life near the mountain village of Barx, Dick’s dedication at the start of the book reads: “To the friendly Pyrenean people who kindly helped us on our way for 52 days of my life.” “Our 52 day retirement adventure along the Spanish Pyrenees” is available from Amazon and as a Kindle edition.

showbiz goss Marley, Music and Marijuana … Can’t be Separated!

by Peter

Taylor

Writer and Broadcaster

WHEN IT comes to listening to music, it’s most likely the sound of your youth is high on your list of favourites. However, there could well be common ground no matter what age you are when it comes to the music of Bob Marley. When he was just 12 years old he moved with his family to Trenchtown in Jamaica, and for the next 24 years before he died in 1981 he dedicated his life to bringing to the world a gloriously rhythmic reggae sound, with words that reflected his anti-materialistic Rastafarian beliefs, and I fancy most of you have enjoyed listening to his music at some point in your life. To mark the 70th anniversary of Bob Marley´s birth a free concert was organised last weekend on the Kingston waterfront with many local reggae artists performing live, including one of Marley’s sons, Ky-Mani. But it’s not just party time, certainly as far as fashion designer Marcia Facey from the town in concerned. It seems that Jamaica has debated for years about adding Marley to its Order of National Hero, its highest honour, and on this subject Marcia said “I was not around when Bob was alive ... but people are still excited about his music.” This sentiment was reinforced by mechanic Errol Campbell also of Kingston who said “Bob was a reggae genius who has done more for Jamaica than most others by popularizing our music, and it’s high time that the government made him our eighth national hero!” The background to this sorry issue is allegedly that some government committee members are opposed to Marley being given this honour because he smoked marijuana and sometimes disrespected authority as part of his Rastafarian faith. Let’s hope the event in Kingston changes their rather antiquated beliefs eh!

Since winning his second World Championship Lewis Hamilton has attained super celebrity status, with legions of fans following him on social media. But I have to say I´m struggling with what is now his fourth breakup with Nicole Scherzinger over him not wanting to set a wedding date. It can’t be easy when two famous peeps get together, but 4 times Lewis … Come On!!!

“ Quote of the Week

Fifty Shades of Grey, the film that professed it would ´shock us to our boots with its steamy sex scenes´ opened in cinemas today and the two main players have been out making sure we know about it. Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson are doing their bit promoting the movie, but the frosty atmosphere between them at photo calls is very clear to see, with them barely looking at each other. TILT!

US singer John Mayer referring to ex-girlfriend Taylor Swift “you can see me at the Grammys doing what I do best, being avoided by Taylor Swift,” aahh bless. Born Melvin James Kaminsky in the summer of 1926 in Brooklyn New York, Mel Brooks evolved into one of the best comedy writers and directors of all time with classics like Blazing Saddles in ´74 and The Producers in ´68. Now we hear he could be making a sequel to his ´87 Star Wars satire Spaceballs with Mel saying “we´re calling it ´Spaceballs: The Search for More Money,” already I want to see it!!!

Stephen Fry said on the Jonathan Ross Show that he and Hugh Laurie could get back together, saying how when they meet the conversations are sparkling. He quite rightly ruled out comedy sketch shows, but hinted they´d talked about going on the road playing theatres and ´nice venues ´as he put it. If you can, check out their work as ´Jeeves and Wooster´ on YouTube ... Priceless.

Life Coach

WITH A background in family and matrimonial mediation, Life Coach Sara Bell helps Readers with their daily worries. If you are having difficulties with relationships, family, work or any other aspect of your life, then help is at hand.

Is she a gold digger? MY FATHER is 75 and has recently inherited a sizable amount of money. As a result, he has attracted a much younger girlfriend of 31, who is clearly only interested in him for his money. How do I tell him I think this woman is a gold digger? It is, of course, your father’s money to spend whichever way he sees fit. If you must say something, then you will need to express your concerns calmly and without coming across as self interested. Tell him you are worried that he might be taken advantage of, because he suddenly has all this money, and you naturally want to protect him. After you have explained your position, you will have to take a step back and let your Dad live his own life. You can only plant a small seed and hope it takes root. If this woman’s intentions are less than honourable, then hopefully in time, your father will see the situation for what it is.

Obsessive motherin-law

MY HUSBAND and I both work full time. His mother is obsessed with housework and runs her finger over every surface when she visits. It doesn’t seem to bother my husband and he says it is she who has the problem and I should ignore it. But he does very little around the house to help and when his mother visits, I am sure she blames me for the untidiness. Modern working couples should share the household chores equally. The key to a neat house is keeping tidy as you go along, and not letting the work build up, until it becomes overwhelming. Draw up a daily roster to get the chores attended to equally between yourself and your Husband. You both work long hours and weekends should be about fun and relaxation. If your Mother-in-law is still disparaging about the state of your home, then it will be her problem. Write to Sara in confidence. A pseudonym will be used if you wish. Sara reads all letters and can give a personal reply. Email your question to agonyaunt@roundtownnews.com or Sara is available for private consultations, telephone 633 614 476.

Almunecar SPRING TIME in Spain is usually a time of ideal holiday weather. OUR JOURNEY takes us through some of the most pleasant countryside to be found in Spain and by late afternoon we arrive at a large comfortable 4* hotel which sits on a rock and overlooks the peaceful waters of the bay. At reception the friendly hotel staff quickly book us in and send us off to large comfortable well equipped rooms, every room with its own large balcony.

Excursions include a visit to the charming little town of Nerja. Through a network of pretty white washed houses, we make our way past the old local church and on to the famous ‘Balcon de Europe’ jutting out into the sea. You can also visit the fabulous caves of Nerja, a huge cavern which can’t fail to impress. On another day we can head down Gibraltar

Almunecar

the coast to the famous holiday town of Torremolinos. There are more people, more shops – both large and small, but again a large sandy beach and this time with a long, elegantly designed promenade. Before we go to Torremolinos though, we will take a short drive up the coastal mountains to the rather pretty little town of Mijas. Perched on the mountainside and offering stunning views of the Costa del Sol, there are a surprising amount of things to see and do here. Street side cafes and a selection of all types of shops are topped by a 16th Century castle, a monastery, and donkey taxis. Another day sees us in the foothills of Spain’s highest mountain range, the Sierra Nevada - meaning the ‘Snowy Mountains’. The drive up into this area known as the Alpujarras is spectacular. The castle, which can still be seen, and the town itself, were the site of many a skirmish between the troops

of the Christian conquerors and their often rebellious subjects, the Moors. Next stop is Pampaniera - what an exquisite little gem this village is. On the way passing through tiny villages and hillside hermitages, we finally arrive at the highest village in Spain, Trevelez. This is a journey unparalleled for unique natural beauty and charm. Also Gibraltar, a British-owned territory with a quaintness which makes it more British than Britain - except perhaps for the Monkeys! With all travel and excursions included in the price this journey is being offered by David’s Coachtrips SL. Next dates: 7 days from 12th to 18th April for only 299€ including full board with wine and water. At under 45€ per day we think this offer is brilliant value. To reserve your place call (0034) 96 678 5910 or book online at www.coachtripsonline.com

Sinking feeling in Venice

Old ‘joanna’ wanted

The Duke and entourage

By Jack Troughton SPANISH NOBILITY arriving in Venice is met with a very damp reception in Gilbert and Sullivan’s ever popular operetta ‘Gondoliers’. The Duke of Plaza Toro (yes, the Duke of the Bull Ring) and his entourage are hoping his daughter Casilda can claim the hand of the King of Barataria – she was betrothed to the royal as a child. Unfortunately, it is unclear which of two gondoliers is ‘His Majesty’ and the story is further complicated as both have just married their sweethearts. Calpe Gilbert and Sullivan Society is

bringing this twisted tale to the Costa Blanca stage next month in concert form, returning to the formula used several years ago for ‘Trial by Jury’ with performances in Moraira and Calpe. Both concerts will contain the wonderful music of the operetta, including such songs as ‘Take a Pair of Sparkling Eyes’ and ‘Dance a Cahcucha’, with narrative from the cast helping the story towards its traditional happy ending. And the shows will be accompanied with live music with Kirsty Glen on piano and Paul Kears on cello, under the watchful eye of Musical Director Aileen Lightfoot.

Gondoliers marks the Calpe Gilbert and Sullivan Society’s seventh season and the concerts take place at Espai La Senieta, Moraira, of Thursday 26th March, and the Salon Blau, Calpe, on Friday 27th March. In keeping with society tradition of raising money for charity, the Calpe performance is in aid of Friends of the children of EMAUS. Both shows start at 8pm and tickets are 10€. They can be reserved by calling 96 648 0300 or 696 514 613. They can also be purchased from Margaret and Elena’s Bookshop, Galerias Mar Azul, 9 Avenida Gabriel Miro, Calpe.

By Jack Troughton FOOTLIGHT THEATRE Group is appealing for help in locating an old upright piano for use as an essential prop in its next production ‘Stepping Out’. The Calpe-based group is hoping someone local will donate an old ‘honky tonk’ for the show – and bag a pair of tickets to see the show in exchange. Stepping out is a hilarious comedy about a tap dancing class set in a ‘typical’ village hall but the gift of a piano will only be accepted on the understanding the Footlights’ stage crew sill remove the metal strings frame and other heavy parts to make it suitable to shift around the stage during performances. Anyone who can help in the search for the instrument to star in the show should call 96 587 0198 or 618 164 351, or email secretary.footlights@gmail.com. Stepping Out is scheduled for a mini-tour this spring with performances in Ondara on 9th April; Alfaz del Pi on April 10th; and Calpe on 14th April. Tickets will be 12€ for adults and 8€ for children under 14-years-old. They will go on sale on 1st March and can be reserved by calling 652 404 798 or by email to footlights.boxoffice@gmail.com And the Footlights show for November will be the Broadway musical ‘Annie’. The group is very keen to recruit new faces, especially male performers. Footlights meets every Thursday evening in Calpe, for more details call the Secretary on 96 587 0198 or email secretary.footlights@gmail.com

IN BUSINESS for more than 12 years, Helen’s Trucks specialise in smaller loads and light removals between the UK, Spain, France and Portugal, bringing that personal touch to transporting your belongings from A to B. HELEN AND Robert who make up the team at Helen’s Trucks along with Henry, say the market has changed significantly from a few years ago when so many more people moved to Spain from the UK. Vehicles are ideally sized not just for the loads they carry but also to manoeuvre through those narrow Spanish streets: Helen’s Trucks are perfectly equipped for what they do. At Helen’s Trucks customers are delighted to receive a personal, friendly and quality service. Helen and Robert both believe it is important to meet their customers face to face even when giving initial estimates, providing a personal, friendly and quality service: “That way we find out what the customer really wants and needs,” says Helen, “…our customers know their treasured possessions are in safe hands… and that personal touch goes a thousand miles.” If it is not possible to deliver straight away, Helen’s Trucks have secure palletised and containerised storage available at good rates,

My trackpad is oversensitive HI AUNTY: Firstly Happy New Year, and thanks for all your help in the past. I am getting very frustrated with my Sony VA10 Model vpceb 1zoe: I am using Windows 7. The problem is with the touch pad which is over sensitive. Visits to the web over the last few months show this is a problem with other users. And typing this note to you has needed two corrections where the cursor has moved into the middle of the note. I have tried to find alternative drivers as the ones installed give no facility for adjusting the sensitivity. Visits to the Sony site eventually advise the model is not recognised. And the Synaptics route has identified the ones in use as v13.2.6.1.20 jul 09: Keith Aunty says: It appears that most touchpad issues can be solved by shutting down the laptop, removing the batter, pressing and holding the start button for 10 seconds, replacing the battery and starting the lap top. Also, in the control panel, you

should have options to change all sorts of touchpad settings, including sensitivity. Failing that, you can always try downloading the Driver pack from synaptics, who make the touchpad: http://www.synaptics.com/en/ drivers.php And as a last resort, you can always use a USB mouse.

Scanning a documents as a text document HI AUNTY: Is there a way I can change the scanning to be a text Doc instead of an image? I feel sure in my previous Epson printer it always went into my docs as a text Doc. Your advice would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Ray. Aunty says: Most documents are scanned and saved as a graphical image. If you want to scan a document containing text and to save it as a text document, you must use Optical character recognition (OCR) software. OCR will scan your document, and try and convert the text it sees and save it into a text document. If you have Microsoft Office, then you should have their “Microsoft Office Document Imaging” in the MS Office tools folder. Otherwise, you will need to find some OCR software - Google free OCR software download.

Ask as default homepage HI AUNTY: Saw the page in a recent edition and read the story about Ask taking over a home page. I’m happy to say that I know how that happened as it just happened to me. I have Java updates set to download automatically and ask before installing (probably default). There was a Java update this morning which worked fine but on completion, I noticed that the notification said that the Ask add-ons would install shortly. Following the verify check I got the Ask install. I’m quite savvy about all this and thought I had denied the installation, but it completed anyway. I’ve removed Ask and all is fine, but I thought you might like to be aware of how this happened. Best regards, Mike Aunty says: Yes, the curse of the default installations - which if you do not see them, can install and overrun your current options. Just goes to show if you do install programs, it may pay to do a “custom” install and not the default install, as you never know what the default install actually installs!

Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin

Odd first person singular forms WE HAVE now covered the bare bones of all standard and rootchanging verbs. However, we need to go back a little bit to pick up a few bits and pieces before we move on to our four irregular verbs. WE ARE going to return to the matter of “first person singular” variations, several of which have been mentioned already in previous articles. The principle is this – amongst the wide range of standard and root-changing verbs in the present tense, across the spectrum of –ar, -er and –ir groups, there is a smattering of verbs which have one form that doesn’t follow the regular pattern. This only ever applies to the first person singular “I” forms, and it does not affect anything else about the verb at all. All the other forms of these verbs are entirely regular according to which group or pattern they fall into. Why (we might ask) do these changes occur? Well, I am not an expert in the history of language, but the reason clearly lies in the way speech develops over a period of many years. Sometimes certain sounds are easier to say than others, and through constant repetition and usage, odd forms find their way into a language and eventually become accepted as correct. We mentioned a familiar example in our last article – “tengo” meaning “I have”. If the verb, in this case “tener”, followed the

complete pattern of a E to IE root changing verb then instead of “tengo” we would be saying “tieno”. However, in my simple way I suspect that over a period of many years, and given just how frequently people use this word, “tieno” turned into something that is easier to say, namely “tengo”. If you’re prepared to accept this as an explanation that’s great, if not, the only other one I have to offer you is “That’s how it is, so tough!” The letter “g” is often involved in these changes, and here is a list of the most frequent examples of this. Caer (to fall) Hacer (to do) Oír (to hear) Poner (to put) Salir (to go out) out) Venir (to come) come) Decir (to say)

caigo (I fall) hago (I do) oigo (I hear) pongo (I put) salgo (I go vengo (I digo (I say)

Another common “odd-ball” is the word for “I give” - “doy”, which in theory ought to be “do” as it comes from the verb “dar”

Suduko Answer

(to give). This will remind some people of the similar forms “voy” (I go), “estoy” (I am) and “soy” (I am), which actually belong to three or our four irregular verbs to be looked at later. Another even stranger example is the first person singular of “saber” (to know) which is “sé”. Why isn’t it “sabo”? Answer: I have no idea, but if someone would like to find out and let me know I’d be delighted! This form is a good illustration of the best way to learn these things though, and that is by constant use. Most people learn early on in their Spanish to say “no sé” (I don’t know), without ever realising that they are using an odd form at all! Finally on this subject, there is a particular change that occurs in the first person singular to verbs that end in “cer” or “cir” in the infinitive. Here is an example – conocer (to know, to be familiar with). “I know” (I am familiar with) is “conozco” (pronounced conothko). Here are some more examples – parezco (I seem) conduzco (I drive) reduzco (I reduce). There are quite few more – something for you to look out for!

Carpal tunnel syndrome IF YOU are experiencing intermediate numbness, tingling or pain in the thumb and adjacent two and half fingers in one or both hands, you might be affected by carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). CTS is by far the most common (90%) of all nerve compression syndromes with 1 out of 20 people in the U.S. affected by it. People between the age of 45 to 60 and pregnant women in their third trimester are most affected. Specifically women are found to be three times more likely to suffer with this condition when compared to men. CTS has been associated with a number of metabolic and endocrine diseases including diabetes and hypothyroidism, as well as mechanical reasons such as repetitive use of the hand and bad posture during office work. The carpal tunnel is a C-shaped tunnel formed by the small bones in the wrist at the top and a band-like ligament at the bottom. It acts as protection for a number of tendons and the median nerve as they pass from the forearm to the hand. The textbook definition of CTS is “compression and subsequent inflammation of the median nerve as it passes through the carpal tunnel of the hand.

However, chiropractors with their extensive knowledge of the nervous system know that often the cause is not as simple. To this regard, a study published in the British Medical Journal the Lancet, found evidence of cervical neuritis (nerve irritation) in over 70% of all CTS patients suggesting a correlation between cervical subluxations and CTS. This can be explained by the fact that the carpal tunnel in the hand is only one of the places where the median nerve can get entrapped and inflamed. The cervical and higher thoracic area of the spine and the elbow joint need to be assessed as well for misalignments causing pressure along the course of the nerve and the symptoms that come with it. If you are experiencing any of the CTS symptoms or you think to be at risk of developing CTS contact one of our chiropractors today at Advanced Chiropractic to assess the alignment of your spine and peripheral joints.

Horoscopes Somewhere along the line must come solution and it is high time that things started to come right. This will not happen overnight, but then something has to motivate the changes afoot. You have options, but it seems that the time is right to get into gear and to have your say. Mercury, planet of communication, touches on sage Saturn to bring about some much needed action all around. Venus and Jupiter bring in light and love just when needed this week. You cannot be expected to share the current burden alone, but your persevering energies and commitment have rather taken over as of late. Allow the assistance of someone who knows you well, and shares your outlook to steer the ship, whilst you charge up your energies ready to do the business now in hand. Someone has taken hold of the wrong end of the stick, and the message seems to have had repercussions throughout. You have gone too far to stop the good work you have started, and you are motivated by the impact it will have. Blame any false starts on Ceres calling time on Jupiter which has the effect of tempting fate somewhat. All will come together, and no need to compromise. Rarely does the Cosmos send out such a positive message as is received in the tenth house this week. This is a time to look within and to balance your innermost energies with what exactly is on offer and this brings you some well deserved dividends and the freedom to make choices based on merit. Share the good times with those who have your genuine interest at heart right now As somebody who enjoys being centre stage things seem to have developed around your talents and you should be very pleased with the prospects. Taking control now shows others just how far you have come, and how ready you are to make moves how far you have come, and how ready you are to make moves that showcase your talents and achievements. The Sun moves on to exalting Pisces and for sure too, romance is in the air at last. You are looking for approval, and it is about time you were rewarded for the fruits of your labours, by those who have benefitted from your consistency and hard work. When the work gets tough then the tough get going, and it would appear that in spite of everything you have been creative and diligent, often seeing things from a different perspective but with a view to harmonise. Swayed by the romantic gestures of Venus, in cahoots with lucky Jupiter, the way ahead is opening up for you. The time has come to release inner energies and to allow for success through your own endeavours. Just ignore what others have said, because they do not realise what you are fully capable of, and you may just find out that you can even surprise yourself, into the bargain. Mars is travelling across the Zodiac in preparation for ongoing commitments with Aries with a view to keeping balance by birthing something new. The tried and tested doesn’t always bring the best results, which is what is really needed right now. There is a surprise coming into the frame this week and it brings up reminiscence of the past with the happiest of memories. Even with the fortunate aspects of Jupiter in evidence this week there is also developing a financial corner which needs your immediate attention. Though the Cosmos has decided to soften the blow somewhat, this will act as a warning as you are advised to make economies every which way. Tighten your belt, and check all aspects of any reasonable economy you can make. He who hesitates is really lost, and now that the ball is in your court, and the opportunity has arisen, take all risks that come your way, because they will pay off sooner rather then later. You have the necessary skills to offer much to a continuing project or scheme, and you are sorely needed to help make ends meet, as you assume responsibility and control with a view to inspire. Making a mountain out of a molehill just doesn’t help a situation which has developed, although you can see both sides of the coin very easily. You are hard working and non judgmental, and the job in question right now needs to be in the hands of somebody who has a vision of the future and the stability and motivation to turn a team around with a view to working together as one. The Sun brings magic and light energy into the picture. Not a moment too late either, as you have been down and surprisingly negative just lately. The way out of the current hardship is to have no limits and to do what you do best, because many will enjoy the benefits of your expertise and professionalism this way. There is no looking back, and so, you don’t have to.

Happy Hippy? THE MANY changes Planet Earth is experiencing right now are as a result of many relevant factors. We are responsible for polluting the planet, but we cannot be found to be totally guilty of global warming as a whole. Indeed too, the Internet is buzzing with so much information regarding the many changes, together with conjecture as to how things will be implemented, and what will happen, and when? Maybe it is time indeed to make some changes, but we do like to know what is coming, and there are many theories which have mostly brought about fear and negativity. It is the not knowing that fuels the flame of doubt, together with the rise of conjecture which only ever offers cold comfort and an intensity of doubt and fear. Whilst there are some people who will always want the truth, because they can cope well with it, there comes along people who would rather not know, because they cope better by not knowing exactly what is going on. The Shift that is referred to, and which would appear to be earmarked for this year, is a spiritual re birth of sorts. Many people across World religions are feeling that there is a need to thrive on the theory there is a new beginning on the way. This, mainly because it brings change, will also serve to bring fear alongside, as they seem to operate so very well together; and what scares some of us silly, inspires and excites others. It is our personal perception that activates a reaction, and the Shift is going to be a reaction that will terrify or inspire, whichever way you look at it. The News does not help. The rise of ISIS does nothing but bring anger and resentment and pain. We are generally, naturally, very aroused by suffering, and yet this is purely shocking terrorism brought to our doors, as it is, indeed, poised to become the warfare of both now and an agonising blueprint of disruption for the future.

Kenny‛s Postbag

Every time I am asked to remove my shoes at an airline security check I am reminded that a would be terrorist once tried to sneak a bomb on board snuggled in his oversized Nike’s. Though I may be irritated I am not alone in wanting to fly safe because it has positive consequences for our safety, of course. After all, I only have to undo a shoelace or two. Terrorism is shaping the way we do things, however. Setting worrying trends for the future, and governed by fear, it sets out to achieve the ideals of the fundamentalists by sending out an extreme message to society we may very well choose not to hear, and which, somehow, we have to act upon. I am sure that aspects have already arisen that we sincerely wish we were not informed of, but all knowledge, however revealed is power, after all. Bringing swingeing changes as it is predicted to do, the Shift is anticipated to be the salvation of the negativities beheld on the Planet. Maybe for good reason it may just be something that many feel will become the antidote of all the bad which is currently going on. If it is to resolve and instruct it will be a joy to receive. Many of us are feeling closer to the process of Ascension as the World goes very wrong. The Shift may hasten anything that can improve the chaos, and bring a new conscious energy to the suffering World before it is too late. If it helps many to begin to think of the Ascension process then it will indeed be a wonderful thing. The World needs to know that real power is so wonderful, and it can work magic in the right hands.Unfortunately so many have the image that those who abuse power are the truly powerful ones. This means that for many power is to be seen as negative thing, when it should be a strength to unite the World and seal peace into the bargain. Spiritual power is given to so many these days, and if they use it for the mutual benefit of others then it is used wisely and will fit to purpose. Always. I hope sincerely that any Shift makes a difference to help to heal that that is going wrong on every continent. Call me a happy hippy if you like, but peace should be ruling this planet; not the fear brought about by the dangerous greed and stealth of those who truly do have blood on their hands, and nothing but hatred in their hearts.

Email your letters to me at: kennycorris@roundtownnews.com

Kenny, what is the Shift people are talking about, and though I know it is coming this year, when is it due? Mike M. Thanks for your mail, Mike. Spiritual people are all eagerly awaiting a change in energies sometime this year. This is the Shift. We have been waiting for things to happen, since 2015 is said to herald some drastic changes and new beginnings. Astrologically March brings a Solar Eclipse, after which Pluto and Uranus halt an action which has been responsible for some seven years of uncertainty and deflation. After this we are assured a clearance and an awakening, and this may well bring on the Shift in question. Let’s see!

Churches around the world prepare for Easter and mark the start of Lent, the 40 days before the holy holiday when it is common practice to give

something up or take on an additional responsibility. And the day before Ash Wednesday – the start of Lent proper – Shrove Tuesday is also known as Mardi Gras in many cultures as traditionally store cupboards were cleared to remove temptation. At La Fustera Church, Benissa, the fun starts at 3pm when pancakes and other goodies will be served, all for a 10€

Los Amigos Golf Society (LAGS) February Competition

AT THE WINTER Las Salinas Petanca League mixed doubles competition on 8th February for the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th divisions 24 teams turned up to play.

ON A very windy morning, 40 Los Amigos Golf Society (LAGS) members and guests played their February competition at the scenic and beautifully presented Aguilon Golf Course, setting off from the 1st and 10th tees. The competition was a Texas Scramble and 10 teams battled for the coveted winner’s prize. In tough conditions and with a commendable net score of 62, the winners were Mick Drummond, Roy Braddow, Don Mallett and Jeff Brain. There were two nearest the pin winners: Willie Crosby on the 8th and Gordon Neilson on the 12th. Two other notable achievements were the longest drive of 278 yards into the teeth of a gale by Keith ‘animal’ Collins and the society also witnesses a monumental ‘chip in’ by the very deft.....or is it daft.....Terry Adams. Depending upon whose version of events you hear, the chip in was from anywhere between the fringe of the green to over 120 yards down the fairway! Either way, a great shot Terry. For further information please go to www. losamigosgolfsociety.es.

La Vila’s women’s team lost their game against Valencia Tecnidex, played at Valencia: score 78-7. Our ladies keep training very hard for better results next time. Next Saturday the first team will travel to Barcelona, playing at 4pm against San Cugat - a crucial game. The winner will have a sure spot for play off to play the Spanish top-12 next season. Good luck for La Vila. No games at home - the second team will play on Sunday away in Aspe (Alicante). Under 18s will play away on Saturday at 11.30am in Valencia against Tatami Valencia. The next home game for the first team will be Sunday 22nd February at 12.30pm against Barcelona Buc. Book the date - we need your support. We have already made preparations for the next 29th International Benidorm 7s: 23rd - 24th May: book the dates. Very good selections including Chile, Uruguay, Spain, Venezuela, Maroc, South African Sevens. Tigers from Australia, European, New Zealanders… don’t miss out. Join the club as a player or supporter, we need all the help we can get - come down and watch La Vila’s next game! Players are still needed for the second senior team: they play in the local Alicante league, mainly Denia, Alicante, Elche and Torrevieja. Come along to training - all are welcome. The Club also run women’s rugby and U18’s, U16’s, U14’s, U12’s, U10’s and U8’s teams. Training has already started, so please come down. There is a well-equipped Gym to which Members have free access. La Vila Rugby Club is at Carretera El Pantano, Villajoyosa. Take the motorway AP-7 exit Nº 66 (Villajoyosa). For more information call Jason Craig on 659 674 768, Ignacio Davila 608 068 208 or email oficina@rugbylavila.net

road test

Tim Saunders Independent unbiased car reviewer

Volkswagen Golf SV WHEN I was told I would be testing the Volkswagen Golf SV, I imagined it was the standard hatchback model. That is not the case though. THE SV is a larger than life hatchback, more like the C-Max is to the Ford Focus. It’s larger and higher up in all the right places although it does look a little more van-like than its smaller hatchback relative. Outside the UK it is actually named ‘Sportsvan’ and is in fact the direct replacement for the Golf Plus. VW sold over 900,000 of these and in Germany the Plus accounted for 20 per cent of all Golf registrations. A trip to Kent puts it through its paces. To start, it has to contend with all the usual Saunders paraphernalia that includes everything except the kitchen sink. If we did not have a need for a pushchair probably all of the luggage would fit in the large boot. I am always impressed with the high quality of finish on every VW I have driven and this model is no different. The seats are comfortable and supportive, finished in a hardwearing fabric. I like the fact that the rear seats can be pulled forward by 180mm giving a larger boot space if required as you can see in the video at travelwriter.biz. That extends the load area from 500 litres to a 590 litres while folding the 40/20/40 split rear bench increases space to 1,520 litres, allowing me to transport a washing machine to the tip and collect a load of logs. At times the SV does feel a little too large for comfort when driving, notably when trying to reverse park. Arguably it would benefit from parking sensors and a video camera.

I try to parallel-park on the outskirts of Faversham and my attempt would be a fail on a driving test and the parked driver behind me leaves in disgust. It would also be advantageous if this model was fitted with satellite navigation. Overall the driving experience though is good, it travels at speed on the motorway with ease although there is a little noise but then there are high winds. The 1.6 turbo diesel unit prefers not to travel at slower speeds especially in second or third gear. It really does need a boot to deliver good performance. In common with most diesels it does need a bit of welly to get going but this is all part of the diesel experience and the frugal amongst us will not mind when we see that despite travelling at 70mph it still returns over 50mpg. In these days of six and seven speed manual gearboxes some might expect something a bit grander than the five speed unit but it is typical VW, smooth and reliable. Being higher up than a standard hatchback provides the driver with a better view of the road ahead and allows me to overtake a slow moving vehicle where I would otherwise be unable to in a lower car. “Longer, wider, taller and more spacious than the hatchback it’s based on, the new Volkswagen Golf SV is the perfect antidote for growing families no longer able to squeeze into the firm’s regular hatchback,” writes Parkers, the

car experts. “The boot’s almost as big as the Estate model and there’s extra passenger room all round thanks to a wheelbase 48mm longer than the hatch it’s based on. It may not have proved quite so popular here, but plenty were still captivated by the extra space and flexibility offered, and it only gets more practical in the latest incarnation.” Overall, while there is a feeling of quality and robustness about the vehicle one cannot help feeling that it is lacking some useful features that would be really appreciated. 2014 onwards: New price range: £19,075 - £27,015 Used price range: £14,437 - £24,696 Top speed: 119mph 0-60mph: 10.9secs Power: 108bhp Economy: up to 72mpg Watch the video at www.testdrives.biz
