A word from JT ANOTHER LEGEND checked out this week with the death of Muhammad Ali, fearsome professional heavyweight boxer, wonderful wit, and all round good egg.

The fighter who earned the nickname ‘The Greatest’ claimed 31 straight wins until being beaten by rival Joe Frazier, always floating like a butterfly and stinging like a bee. Another of the heavyweight big guns, George Foreman – who lost his world title to Ali in the famous ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ in 1974 – called Ali one of the greatest human beings he had ever met. Ali eventually retired from boxing in 1981. He won 56 times in a 21-year professional career of 61 fights. The younger crew at RTN Towers don’t necessarily remember his exploits in the ring unless they are big fans of the sport, but they might enjoy watching the boxer sparring with Michael Parkinson on TV. Rerun please Auntie Beeb! With paws seemingly the size of an average human head forming an awesome fist, it is easy to forget until Parkinson’s took hold, he was a tireless civil rights campaigner and poet, overcoming the boundaries of sport, race and nationality. And a huge thanks to RTN reader Len for sharing his beloved photos and memories of meeting the big man back in 1978 – pictures rarely seen by in public.

Beach fun for dogs DOGS AND their owners could soon have a beach they can legally enjoy together in the Marina Alta resort of Calpe. by Jack Troughton The town hall has chosen Cala Les Urques as a suitable site – rejecting two alternatives – and has now applied to the Environmental Department and the Director General of the Coasts for permission. All residents were invited to air their opinions in a consultation organised by the local authority. Cala Manzanera was rejected as the majority of neighbours were opposed to the facility and it is hoped to become the base of a luxury sports centre; and Cala de Puerto Blanco is being ‘reconditioned’ and it is hoped will regain Blue Flag status. And Councillor Carole Saunders explained Cala Les Urques appeared to be the most suitable; and the town hall would arrange for better access following rock falls and make the beach – popular with naturists – safe by using wire mesh over cliff faces. “This was not a referendum on whether or not to have a dog beach but to ask dog owners if they would be prepared to act responsibly and help keep the beach clean if we selected one,” she said. “There are still people who do not understand that dogs cannot go on our two main beaches in Calpe – the European Blue flag would not be awarded to a beach that allows animals. “The town depends to such an extent on tourism and people do specifically look for beaches that have blue flags because of the quality of the water and amenities.” Mrs Saunders said it was actually against the law to take dogs on to the large beaches. “People must realise this is not Denia or Orihuela and actually Calpe has very little coastal area.”

Help for Heroes charity event

THE PLAZA de Salvador Dali in Alfaz del Pi is the location for a fun charity event in support of the Help for Heroes on Wednesday 15th June. The fun afternoon starts at 3 pm and will have Army games, a buffet, raffles and prizes as well as live music and entertainment. Organisers told the RTN that they would love as many as possible to go along and support the worthy cause whilst enjoying a family fun afternoon.

The great Ali BOXING LEGEND Muhammad Ali was as quick with his one-liners outside the ring as he was with his fists during a bout, said RTN reader Len Beisser. by Jack Troughton The pair met at Grosvenor House Hotel in London’s Park Lane in 1978 and photographs taken with ‘The Greatest’ remain one of his proudest possessions and a fun encounter. And when the news broke of the death of the three-times World Heavyweight Champion at the age of 74 last week, Len was reminded of his brief encounter with the man crowned ‘Sportsman of the Century’ by Sports Illustrated and ‘Sports Personality of the Century’ by the BBC. Len, who lives in Moraira, said his friend and neighbour Ken Turner worked at the hotel as a ‘personal trainer’ to the stars – his students including Bianca Jagger and former Charlie’s Angel Farrah Fawcett-Major. He said they were invited to meet Ali – born Cassius Clay in January 1942 who had 61 fights as a professional, winning 56 – over orange juice. “We warned to get rid of the drinks!” He recalled: “We sat down with him and Miss Australia and this man from the Magic Circle came along to do some tricks, because Ali loved magic. “He was doing all this wonderful magic when Ali said ‘I’ll show you a trick´. He took some cards out of his pocket, shuffled them and asked the guy to pick one. “He replaced the card and shuffled them He said ´the card’s in your pocket´ and the Magic Circle guy immediately tapped his top pocket. Ali simply said: ‘fooled you!’.” Later the party accompanied Ali and reporters and photographers to the hotel’s swimming pool. “At the edge of the pool, Ali said ‘get ready, I’m just going to do this once’. They all gathered around with their cameras. “He got onto the springboard, went to the end and started bouncing up and down…the he simply said: ‘I’ve changed my mind´ and walked off.” Len, a boxing fan, said before leaving he asked for an autograph for his one-year-old son Luke. “He said ´’sure, how do I spell it?’ I said like in the Bible…but you can spell it anyway you want to Mr Ali.” And he said: “It was the best lunch of my life – I have never met anyone who has been so close to him as I was that day. My family couldn’t believe it until they saw the pictures.” Ali died in hospital in Phoenix, Arizona, from a respiratory illness, complicated by his Parkinson’s disease. And perhaps the last words should belong to him. Asked how he wanted to be remembered, he once said: “As a man who never sold out his people. But if that’s too much; then just a good boxer…I won’t even mind if you don’t mention how pretty I was.”

And Anne Bayley commented: “It’s too hot to work…although aircon throughout school is worth coming for.” JAZZ Musician Richard Crook noted he was playing a Denia bar on Wednesday evening: “Hot jazz!” And as people continued to leave comments about the unseasonal baking temperatures, the use of ‘emojis’ came more into use to illustrate the eff ects of the melting heat. However, spare a thought for people back in the UK where parts of the country experienced another form of extreme weather as thunderstorms brought heavy rain and fl ash fl oods. The emergency services were kept busy in south-east London as drains failed to cope with the sudden deluge and drivers were forced to abandon cars trapped in water. Three drivers were rescued from submerged cars in a street under two metres of water. One said: “I couldn’t open the door because of the force of the water; I was rescued by the fi re brigade - that is why I am still alive.” The heat will return across Spain this summer and medical experts say the best defence against adverse reaction “is prevention”. SOME GOOD ADVICE: Drink more non-alcoholic fluids regardless of levels of activity – and do not wait until thirsty to drink. Avoid drinking alcohol or taking large amounts of sugar. Both actually cause a person to lose more body fluids - and very cold drinks can cause cramps. Stay indoors; if possible, in an air-conditioned area. A few hours with air-conditioning help when returning to the heat. Electric fans provide comfort but a cold shower, baths or air-conditioning are better ways of cooling the body. Wear lightweight, light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing. Infants and young children and elderly people are more at risk of suffering a heat-related illness; as are people already suffering a medical condition, especially heart disease or high blood pressure. And if being outdoors is unavoidable; limit activity to morning evening hours, cut down on exercise and if physical activity is taken, drink two to four glasses of cool non-alcoholic fl uids each hour. Sports drinks replace lost salt and minerals. Try and rest in shaded areas and protect against the sun by wearing a wide brimmed hat, sunglasses, and wear a sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher.

A grand alliance RESIDENTS ASSOCIATIONS of two large Costa Blanca urbanisations are behind a wider group aimed at improving communities for householders. by Jack Troughton Cumbre del Sol Residents Association and the Asociacion de Vecinos de la Monte Pego believe an ‘Alliance of Marina Alta Urbanisations’ believe the initiative will improve the chances of success and help overcome frustrations when dealing with both developers and local politicians. The two residents groups, which together represent more than 1,500 property owners, have discovered they both face similar “issues” as they attempt to improve the lot of residents. And Dr Bernd Miller, President of the Monte Pego group, and Tom Blackie, his counterpart at Cumbre del Sol in Benitachell, say the alliance is non-political but aimed at serving the community with a larger united voice. “Over the next few weeks we will connect with homeowner organisations of other urbanisations and invite them to jointly build a platform to heighten our influence in this coastal region,” they said in a statement.

“We will establish a continuous exchange of information and close cooperation in our efforts to overcome existing administrative, judicial, and political blockages.” The alliance will also seek to build better access to the media to air its views over

Fundraiser for the children of Emaus LOCAL BUSINESSES and entertainers in Benidorm have united for a fundraising day in aid of the children of Emaus to be held on 19th June at the Palladium. The event has been organised by local entertainer Wayne (Levi) and Des along with Tad from Yorkshire Pride. Family runs illegal care home by Caroline Tyszka A BRITISH family has been arrested accused of running an illegal care home and conning the elderly out of their properties and savings. A 59-year-old couple and their 25-year-old daughter preyed on vulnerable expats; and convinced them to move into the Santa Pola ´care home´, in reality just an adapted family property. And the Guardia Civil said the family targeted their victims - who had little or no family and friends, helping reduce the risk of being discovered. At the home, it was alleged residents were charged between 2,500€ and 3,000€ per month for care services which were not covered by an official licence or delivered by qualified staff. Potential victims were identified by the daughter who worked at a local pharmacy, and they were left isolated because they only spoke English. She would befriend the targets and gain their trust before recommending the “scam residential home” run by her parents. And because Santa Pola was popular with retired British people, the family were able to seek out their victims with relative ease. However, after a tip off from concerned locals the Guardia Civil launched an investigation. Officers discovered the five-bedroom house had no special fittings or safety features but did have CCTV which officers believed was used to monitor residents to ensure that they did not leave the grounds. Once in residence, the elderly handed over documentation, for “safe keeping,” relating to their properties and savings. It is believed this was to trick them eventually into signing everything to the accused just before they died. Whilst the victims reported to the officers that they were not physically abused, they had been shouted at. They said when anyone had a visitor they were not allowed to be alone with them and one of the family was always present. Officers said a breakthrough came when one of the elderly male residents, assisted by his family members, left the home and made a formal ‘victim’s statement.’ The three family members have been charged with fraud, criminal intrusion and belonging to a criminal organisation.

Thousands need emergency funds An estimated 4,200 Alicante residents are still waiting to receive a social payment to help feed and house themselves and their families. The payment, called guaranteed income (RGC), aims to help meet basic needs in situations of social emergency. Three out of ten Spanish, 28.6%, are currently at risk of requiring the fund according to the National Statistics Institute. Currently 4,800 residents in Alicante receive the RGC however there are many cases still pending and awaiting assessment. Additional provisions have been made in this year’s regional budget to meet the increasing demands; with similar backlogs in other cities and a lack of staff to process the claims is being cited as the main cause for the delay. And in Valencia an estimated 12,470 people are waiting for applications to be processed, which pay an average of 400€ per household.

With a little help from our friends A DEDICATED team of four-legged friends has been helping bring a little joy to senior citizens at the Javea Day Centre. by Jack Troughton Therapy dogs from the Asiscan project help improve the health and well-being of people with dementia, Alzheimer’s, and other cognitive and emotional problems. As a result over the last seven months Nala, Clara, Dori and Simba have been visiting the centre on Mondays and Wednesdays; there presence improves the mood of people; the dogs make them laugh as they are patted and chatted to, and watched performing simple tasks. And the canines also bring a smile to dedicated centre workers as they wander the rooms and corridors. There was a double visit last Monday when Mayor Jose Chulvi, town hall colleagues, and officers of La Caixa Bank – behind the initiative – went to see the progress of the “pioneering project” and promised to continue funding to extend the good work of the canine carers.

Obama to visit Spain

PRESIDENT OBAMA is set to visit NATO ally Spain this summer just weeks after the nation goes to the polls in the general election. The 44th American president is in his final year in office and before steps down in Janu-

ary. He will meet with the Spanish King and acting president and arrives afetr a visit to Poland on 7th -9th July as part of his final NATO summit with other world leaders. White House press secretary, Josh Ernest said the president will return to the US on 11th July following his visit. “The visit to Spain, an important NATO Ally, will highlight robust security cooperation, a strong political and economic relationship, and longstanding people-to-people ties,” he said.

Exclusive sneak preview for RTN at Dealz by Caroline Tyszka THE NEW Benidorm Dealz shop opened at 10 am on Thursday 9th June, but RTN were lucky enough to get a sneak preview the night before, Wednesday, as friends and family of the store workers were invited to attend a special tour within the shop. Everyone waited patiently as the finishing touches were put to the window dressings and cleaners did their final preparations before the excited “special guests” were allowed to enter. When the store opened officially on Thursday the first 100 customers received a 5 euro voucher to spend on any of the thousands of products on offer. Fans of the Poundland concept queued up ready to fill their baskets with some of their favourite, but sometimes hard to find, expat comforts. The new shop is situated in the La Marina Shopping Centre, Benidorm (Finestrat) right next to Bellaminis on the ground floor. 129 words

Cross border drugs seizure GUARDIA CIVIL officers have seized 2,200 kilos of hashish which was being smuggled between Spain and France in a cargo of vegetables. Eleven members of a gang, including the alleged leader of the organisation, were arrested, and 69 packages of drugs were discovered in a

lorry, wrapped in cling film and blue hessian An investigation was launched after officers found unusual activity in a Malaga industrial estate. They found the gang was using refrigerated trucks to conceal the illegal drugs across the border into central Europe. The two ‘unemployed’ brothers linked to the

unit were immediately arrested and documents led police to the ring leader who lived in Requena, Valencia – he was arrested in 2009 and 2012 for similar offences. Officers arrested the man, his wife and a further six people – all accused of assisting in the transportation of illegal drugs – after searches of properties in Valencia and Malaga; seizing two tractors; a forklift; several other vehicles; mobiles and computers.

Smugglers caught at airport THREE MEN, including a security guard, have been arrested at Malaga Airport as two of them were trying to board a flight to Gatwick with £30,000 worth of cannabis. The guard was helping two men get the drugs onto the plane in their hand luggage by bypassing security controls, a police spokesman said. The passengers were carrying a small suitcase which contained 4.5 kilos of cannabis and had successfully reached secure areas. Officers received a tip off about a gang’s illicit operation on commercial flights between Spain and the UK. Officers were unable to say how much had previously been smuggled earlier. And police seized more than £350, six mobile phones and 1,150€ in 50€ notes from the three men, all Spaniards aged between 30 and 43. A spokesman for National Police in Malaga, said: “Officers have arrested three people at Malaga Airport when they were trying to smuggle cannabis on a flight to Gatwick. “One of the detainees worked as a security guard in the airport and permitted - with the collusion of the other two - the transportation of drugs in hand luggage so it could reach the UK.” The three have been charged with drug trafficking and membership of an organised gang and the investigation has now switched to locating other members of the group.

Fines for dog owners FAILURE TO pick up after dogs could cost up to 780€ in fines in proposed penalties for breaches to ‘cleanliness’ in the city of Alicante. by Rhiannan Bell The Councillor for the Environment has presented a draft of fines to be levied - including leaving waste beside a rubbish bin and not collecting dog droppings. The draft calls for a 100€ fine for leaving waste outside the container and 250€ for not collecting dog droppings; rising to a maximum of 780€ in both cases. There are also clarifications as to where dogs may urinate and who can feed the cats and pigeons...and who cannot. The document will be put forward for approval this month and, if given the thunbs up by politicians in july, the new bylaws will be introduced and could be fully inaugurated in September. Additionally, to improve and encourage cleanliness and recycling efforts within the city, Alicante’s environment team is committed to improve selective waste collection. To achieve this they will install 90 new containers for plastic, which will be distributed through the town and rural districts this month. And a plan will be developed to group the different recycling containers together to facilitate their use. “If they are scattered, people tend to throw everything in one bin, and not travel to the correct container.” said a spokesman.

Battle of the beaches ALICANTE CITY fast food restaurants are offering a beach delivery service to compete with illegal beach touts as well as beach front businesses. by Caroline Tyszka A group of restaurants in the city centre have joined together to provide a fast food delivery service to customers on the Postiguet beach. Customers can order anything from burgers, Thai, kebabs and even paella seven days a week between specified hours and have it delivered to their sun lounger with a simple phone call. The only restriction is a minimum order value of 12 euros plus a two euro delivery fee. However, beach front restaurant owners have complained that the unfair competition will affect their businesses which are already being hit by the illegal beach sellers, a growing problem for many coastal towns in the region. The beach touts selling sangria, mojitos and even cava pay no taxes and are not controlled by food and hygiene inspections. Often they can be seen preparing their drinks at nearby bins and in extremely un-sanitised conditions. One restaurant worker told reporters that they had even seen the beach touts remove straws and cups from a bin and reuse them. CYCLIST Alan Jennion has been reunited with his stolen 500€ bike after going to police to report the theft of the machine. by Jack Troughton Alan, an RTN reader, saw the article by a Costa Blanca branch of Neighbourhood Watch underlining the importance of reporting crime to the authorities and went to Benidorm Police. And he was delighted to be told his powered bike was already at the station and the villain – who had taken it from outside his home – had been arrested. Alan said the bicycle was stolen on a Friday morning; he read the article later the same day and went to report it was stolen the following morning and on the Sunday received a call to

say his beloved machine was waiting. “You don’t think that at 8.30am someone is going to walk past and steal your bike and the police had apparently seen a known local ‘crook’ with it and become suspicious,” he said. “I wasn’t going to make an insurance claim but just wanted to alert police to the theft just in case I came across the bike – officers even warned me not to ‘have a go’ even if I spotted it but to call for help. “The officers at the station didn’t realise they already had the bike but I was called on Sunday morning with the good news.” Alan admitted side panniers had vanished but he was so pleased to be reunited with his trusty bike, he has replaced them with new ones. “It was an excellent piece of police work.”

Here comes the summer YOUNGSTERS LIVING at the EMAUS children’s home in Altea are off to the shops to buy sandals and beachwear for the summer holidays. The 30 children at the home were given a selection of gift tokens by

charity Friends of the children of EMAUS and will also pay for them to attend summer camps. The charity helps youngsters living in homes across the region live as normal a life as possible and provides them with

Water savings helping the environment Storm drainage THE WATER Company Hidraqua is saving the equivalent work in Alfaz del Pi of over 14,000 Olympic swimming pools of water with new efficiency measures in the region. by Jack Troughton Hidraqua, who manage the integrated water cycles in 77 towns and cities in the Valencian Commuidad, have made several network improvements which have enabled them to save millions of cubic metres of drinking water. The company serves 1.7 million residents, although at high season this can rise to 2.5 million, and states that their main objective is to meet the demands without compromising the ability and resources of future generations. In Benidorm they have saved 90,000 cubic metre of water by installing pumping facilities from the sea to the beach water systems, whilst in Orihuela rain water has been collected at pumping stations, treated and then used for park and garden irrigation. In Torrevieja the Agamed water management company reuses one hundred percent of treated water whilst in Alicante, Aguas de Alicante irrigates seventy percent of their green areas with regenerated water. Plans in the region for 2016 include further reducing the consumption of drinking water, and in Guardamar a new irrigation system has recently been put into service which irrigates the pine forests surrounding the castle with reclaimed water.

THE WORKS in Alfaz del Pi to improve storm drainage, street pavements and lighting, that started in May are progressing nicely said the mayor for the town this week. Vicente Arques visited the works on plaça Jaume I and Avenida País Valencià and commented that “the work was necessary to solve drainage problems in the area and so that surface run off points collect the water and channel it to a better area.” Joining the mayor was Vicente Soler from the planning department, Oscar Perez from technical services and Mayte Garcia from the finance department. Vicente Soler said: “The works will solve the problem of flooding when we have heavy rain.” Other work due to start in the coming months is the implementation of a roundabout between Avenida País Valencià and the cami de Coves which the councillor for planning said will “reorganise the traffic and give more fluidity to the movement of vehicles.” The roundabout is anticipated to be completed within six months at a cost of 1.45 million euros.

ONCE (OrganizaciĂłn Nacional de Ciegos EspaĂąoles) the Spanish foundation which raises funds to provide services for the blind worked with the technical departments of the town hall to ensure that crossing points were carefully selected to be of most benefit for the users. Toni Perez, mayor, and the president of ONCE in Valencia, Enrique Llin, met with the Lions club president Vicente Saval to try the new lights now that they are operational.

The lights, which beep and vibrate have been placed at crossings in Jaime I, Avenida Beniarda and Alfonso Puchades as well as along the Mediterranean and Villajoyosa avenues. The devices emit acoustic signals and also vibrate to help users with different

impairments. The sound level is set to be louder during rush hour times but quieter overnight so as not to annoy nearby residents. Users can tell by the vibration and beep what signal the lights are on and can therefore cross knowing that it is safe to do so.

A BUS and a lorry collided in AndalucĂa at the weekend, killing two and injuring 53 people. by Caroline Tyszka

The coach, travelling between Algeciras and Madrid hit a broken down lorry that was parked on the hard shoulder on the A-4 near Montoro. The incident occurred at 3.10 am on Sunday as the bus, owned by Socibus, was heading north. The two drivers of the lorry were investigating a problem with their lights when the coach crashed into it killing the driver and one passenger. Both lorry drivers were unhurt but many of the injured were taken to the local AndĂşjar Hospital with the more seriously injured being transferred to the Reina Sofia University Hospital in Cordoba. Two Colombians are believed to still be in a serious condition, they are reported to be a married couple who were behind the driverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s seat. The cause is still under investigation but initial reports say they lights on the road may have been malfunctioning. Another bus was called to take the passengers to Madrid.

A night at the Oscars by Caroline Tyszka THE BROADWAY Academy group, from Alfaz del Pi, wowed their sell-out audience at the weekend with their show “A Night at the Oscars.” The lucky “I’ve got the golden ticket” audience members dressed up in their long gowns and tuxedos for the red carpet evening which greeted them through an arch of gold and black balloons. The show, written, directed and produced by Matt King and choreographed by Rebecca Troch – aided by her daughter Chloe Troch – saw a cast of 60 Broadway members sing, dance and act scenes from Annie, Grease, Oliver and Sister Act. Matt King said: “It has been just seven weeks since the cast were given their scripts, they have done brilliantly well in learning their lines and dances. We don’t see anyone as ‘a’ or ‘the star’, they are all stars in Rebecca’s and my eyes and, as Rebecca and I know from our own professional theatre days - performances like these are group efforts - no one child, adult player or dancer is bigger or better than another, they all need each other, they are all a team and it takes a lot of effort from a lot of people to stage a show like this.” “Companians in Albir help a lot,” he continued, “and when we asked for everyone to ‘dress up’ there’s no holding Companians back!! They looked superb in their dinner jackets and long dresses, and that was just the men! The Oscars for the best dressed went to Companians Danny Allen and his partner.

“After all who, can resist a man and his Kilt?” Matt said. Mini Oscar awards were presented to MABS and Companians for all their hard work. RTN were delighted to also receive an award along with Publicidad4U for sponsoring the event, with a special Oscar going to David Carrington of Companians who painted and designed the Oscar set. The Show was a huge success and the total raised for MABS is expected to be around 700 euros once everything has been counted. Broadway will be holding a Summer School on Monday 4th to Friday 8th July, 10 am until 2 pm at their Alfaz del Pi studio, where there will be intense acting, singing and dancing lessons which culminate in a “showcase performance” on the Friday evening. From Maine to Spain

AN AMERICAN teenagers “message in a bottle” was found by a Spanish fisherman three years after being thrown into the Atlantic Ocean. by Caroline Tyszka Terra Gallo, then 14, and her younger sister, Nola were visiting an aunt on Monhegan Island, 14 miles off the coast of Maine, in June 2013 when they decided to fill ten bottles with handwritten messages and a return address in the hope that they would be found. Terra told reporters: “We thought there was a slight possibility that they would be found but it was just a fun experiment, we really didn’t expect anything this big to happen.” The note read: “Hello Terra, My name is Juaki. I’m from Spain and last year I found the bottle you threw in the sea when I was fishing for hake with my brother Mitael and friends in the Gulf of Biscay to the north of the fishing port of Armintza (Basque Country). In the bottle was your letter. It travelled from Monhegan Island to our hands, a distance of 5,200 km more or less. But the bottle didn’t travel alone, a bunch of barnacles hung from it.” Juaki said he complied with Terra’s request to put his own message inside the bottle with hers and return it to the ocean. “I hope you are as thrilled to receive this letter as I was when I found your bottle and I hope we’ll receive more answers when I return the bottle to the sea,” he wrote.

AECC promotes mammograms THE AECC in Alfaz del Pi held a meeting last week that all local ladies had been invite to. The Alfaz del Pi Councillor for Health, Dolores Albero, opened the meeting which was followed by speakers Pamela Dawson Tasker, president, and Maribel Torres, vice president. The meeting began with a brief introduction into the back ground of the AECC and that the emphasis is placed on early detection of breast cancer because it ensures the greater survival rate from the condition. All those attending the meeting were encouraged to sign up for an appointment at the Provincial Offices of the AECC in Alicante. Ice and a slice OIL RIG workers risked ending up in the drink as they braved harsh conditions and icebergs off the coast of Canada’s Newfoundland.

The West Hercules Drilling Rig was based in the Flemish Pass as it hunted for new oil and gas reserves for company Statoil, close to the mainland. The campaign has just come to an end in Canada and it is possible the rig – like many others – will be “stacked and demobilised”. However, Statoil will commission a new campaign in the area over 2017-18 and the Seadrill rig again employed in the search. And RTN was told by worker and avid reader, Iain Miller from Javea, onboard the West Hercules: “It is strange being this close to land on the rig; we have spent the last 18 months offshore Newfoundland in some of the harshest weather that this planet has to offer. “We have had many obstacles thrown at us during this time; the main one being icebergs in the summer months that break off and drift down from the Arctic which can interrupt our drilling operation.” The West Hercules is a deepwater semi-submersible rig which can operate in waters up to 3,000 metres deep. Tax obligations in spain: non residents income tax As we do every year, we wish to remind those readers who are Non Tax Resident in Spain that they are still obliged to pay Income Tax in Spain for Non Tax Residents if the own a property here, even if they do not actually have any income in Spain. If you live in Spain and but are not registered with the tax authorities as a tax resident or you do not submit taxes as tax residents, you could be legally considered as Non Tax Resident, as no notice has been given to the tax authority. Non Tax Residents could be liable to pay Wealth Tax, if the value of their assets in Spain (after deducting debts, i.e: pending capital of the mortgage, etc.) is above 700.000€. If you are Non Tax Resident in Spain (or not legally tax resident in Spain), you will need to pay tax for any income in Spain (Income Tax for Non Residents, IRNR): such as rent from a letting, interest on bank accounts, etc. If you do not have any income but you own a property or a share in a property, your tax bill will be based on a calculation as per the Cadastral Value (value that appears on your Spanish Local Rates receipt from the Town Hall, the SUMA office or the equivalent). Even now it is quite common for people who are Non Fiscal Residents in Spain ( or not legally Tax Resident in Spain) to simply not pay this tax; usually due to ignorance or neglect and especially when they have no income in Spain and only own a house. Caution is needed, as the Spanish Tax Office, equivalent to the Spanish Inland Revenue (Agencia Tributaria), is investigating property owners in Spain who do not pay taxes as either tax residents or non tax residents, urging them to update their status and pay the applicable tax. If you are not sure if you are “legally or officially” tax resident or non-tax resident, or if you want to know what is the most convenient for you, we can assist you, studying your personal situation. THE RED Palm Beetle continues to cause widespread devastation across Spain as it infects trees with its appetite for destruction.

by JACK TROUGHTON PHOTOGRAPHER ALEC Bettney discovered a row of 44 dead and dying palms on a connecting road between roundabouts of Carcaixent and Alzira in Valencia , stricken by ‘Picuda Roja’ or more scientifically ‘Phynchoporus Ferrugineos’. Alec, who has now done a little homework on the lifecycle of the pest, told RTN: “My close-up image of the Red Palm Beetle is from last July when it landed on our table cloth...at that time we didn’t know what it was.”

The insect, a native of Asia, first arrived in mainland Spain through the importation of infected palms. “Reading up on this beetle reveals some interesting facts,” added Alec. “Each female lays an average of 250 eggs every 10 weeks. Eggs hatch and the weevils munch the inside of the palm and are mature adults in around eight to 10 weeks. “Each adult can fly around 5km and the cycle starts again – but that’s too many beetles for me to work out!” He said the beetle searched for palms damaged by nature – often by strong winds – or broken or badly pruned trees;

spraying or injecting palms to protect them against the beetle by specialists is highly recommended. “It is a fact that many people may not know their tree is infected until it is too late. Useful late spring and summer pruning

ALTHOUGH THE weather is heating up gardens will benefit if pruning continues in preparation for and during the summer months. The essential and wise things are as follows. Trim back the growth of trees, hedging plants and climbing shrubs that start to hinder passers-by from fully using the pavements alongside your property. Unfortunately this may mean removing flowering branches as we do with oleander, honeysuckle, bougainvilleas and bignonias. Deadhead and prune plants that can be stimulated to produce a continuity of flowers. This is particularly important with annuals, perennials and shrubs such as hibiscus, lantanas, plumbago and roses. The removal of untidy dead flower heads as above and also of bulbs such as gladioli and lilies and aromatic herbs such rosemary, lavender and rue. Make a collection of seed heads to provide seeds for next year. Easy ones to grow are hollyhocks, marigolds poppies and sweet peas. Keep the garden safe by cutting back spiky plants alongside paths and trimming off the end of each yucca leaf. If you are becoming infirm remove all spiky plants from the garden. Trim plants that start to block out or mask important external and internal views. Trim the lower branches of trees which you need to walk under to avoid damage to heads. If fruit bushes or trees have very heavy crops remove some fruits on each branch to stimulate larger fruits. Take some well shaped cuttings for to propagate new plants for next year. Try summer cuttings of carnations, mock orange, geraniums and succulents for starters.

One of the interests of summer is to see how many young fish have hatched in the garden pond and to see how fast they grow. However to do so requires that banks of aerating weeds and expanding waterlily leaves are trimmed each month. Take out the centres of leaf vegetables if they show signs

of starting to go to seed. You can use these trimmings for salads and cooking and new growth will be stimulated. Remove unsightly dead low leaves in the vegetable garden on cabbages, cauliflowers and broccoli etc.. Essentially just look around weekly and see what is starting to look out of place, untidy, unsafe or getting in the way.

He won’t commit

I have been seeing this guy for 12 months now. We hardly ever go out, but instead spend nights together all the time. When I ask him about getting married, he says he doesn’t want a serious relationship and we are fine as we are. When I bring up our future, he won’t carry on the conversation. Going underground By Jack Troughton MEMBERS OF Javea U3A’s Spanish Culture and Cuisine Group enjoyed a four-day trip to Mar Menor and Lorca – including a visit underground at a mine. Led by group leaders Angela Chantry and Tony Dearie, 48 members enjoyed a getaway that started with a visit to the Licor 43 Experience at Cartagena. This included a tour of the factory and museum where the famous liquor is produced from a secret family recipe of 43 ingredients. First made in 1946, it is one of Spain’s favourite tipples and a bestselling export. On the second day, the group ventured into and old lead and mineral mine in Minina Park, a visit that included a ride on a mining train and a walk around the inside of the Agrupa Vicenta Mine. Day three saw the party move to Lorca and exploring the ancient city. The group stayed at the Parador Hotel next to Lorca Castle; visiting the fort’s grounds, the remnants of a 15th Century synagogue and a muslin cistern. And on the journey back to Javea, there was a visit and guided tour of a traditional Mediterranean finca – Finca Torrecillas - founded in the 17th century and still run by the descendants of the same family. As well as still working the land, the family has opened it as an eco retreat so that visitors can enjoy hiking and wildlife observation. The visitors were also treated to a Spanish picnic, based on traditional recipes created by host Paco’s grandmother

A motorhome is the ideal solution for holidays with youngsters. by Tim Saunders Our beautiful little daughter Harriett was born in February and it has been fun yet challenging adapting our carefree existence to more responsible ways since her arrival. No longer can we walk out of the front door without a thought - now there’s the pushchair, changing bag and car seat for starters not to mention her Toy Story book and Freda the frog. We still wanted a family holiday but realised that it would be unfair and inconsiderate on both Harriett and others if we were to sail or fly anywhere. After much thought it became clear that a motorhome was the only remedy to our little problem. Having never driven one we opted for a compact four-berth Peugeot Nuevo II Auto-Sleeper conversion based on a shortwheel base Peugeot Boxer van. We planned to visit Scotland as we hadn’t been there before. The great thing about a motor home is that as that wellknown Marvin Gaye song goes “Wherever I lay my hat is my home”. Rather than being tied to campsites it’s possible to ‘wild camp’ wherever you like within reason. Therefore many road-sides become possibilities. The advantages for us far outweigh the disadvantages, which are minimal: no mains electricity or water. So although the microwave and plug sockets don’t work we can still enjoy hot food, hot showers and watch the TV! We are impressed with the Freeview television, which generally delivers a clear picture but does require re-tuning when arriving in a new destination. The 12v leisure battery lasts up to three days, too. And by driving a motorhome you automatically join a club – fellow motorhome drivers wave to you and you return the compliment. During our two-week break we were aiming for Scotland but avoiding the motorway in preference of more scenic routes and only averaging around 30 miles a day has meant that we have had to revise our plans. From Hampshire we made our way to picturesque Woodstock, Buxton, Castleton, Ashbourne, Matlock Bath and the brilliant Crich Tramway Village in Derbyshire only to begrudgingly have to return down south. Inside the motorhome are sumptuous hardwearing Belgian fabrics, carpets and a wood finish reminiscent of expensive yachts and planes. Clearly a lot of thought has gone into making the best use of space possible and it is easily transformed depending on requirements. For instance, there can be four seats for daytime travelling including the clever swivel driver’s seat. Two tables can be added for dining, which when not in use are stored in the wardrobe. The seats convert into a double bed while a captain’s bunk doubles up for day-time storage, above the cabin. Families should cope well with the airline-style overhead storage and the reasonably sized wardrobe. Probably the cleverest use of space is in the shower room where the toilet turns for the optimum seating position while the sink swivels to create a wall for the shower. A retractable clothes rail is useful for drying wet towels and clothes during the day. To use the Thetford chemical toilet the blade to the left of the seat has to be opened before use and then shut afterwards. A red light indicates when it needs emptying. And that of course is the least pleasant job of all. However, Thetford has tried to make this as quick and easy as possible. It’s simply a matter of unclipping it from its cubby-hole, unscrewing the top and disposing. We have been able to do this at campsites, public toilets and petrol stations for free. Topping up the 10-litre waste water tank is easily carried out with a watering can.

The 102-litre fresh water tank for washing has lasted us between two and three days as has the 78-litre waste water tank. When on a camping site connecting to all the services is easy but when ‘wild camping’ it’s not so simple. Filling up the fresh water tank can be achieved using two methods: hose pipe or aqua roll. To use the hose pipe just requires the correct attachments to be present on the standpipe (we only found one campsite during our travels to have the correct attachment on their standpipe). Therefore we frequently use the aqua roll method whereby a water container or watering can is filled and then the special automatic pump provided by Auto Sleepers is submerged into the container. Once the internal control panel is engaged and an internal tap opened the pump automatically sucks up the water. It’s quite satisfying to watch. To fill the tank from empty using this method takes 35 minutes. At the back the kitchen includes a gas cooker, sink and a sizeable rear window, the latter making washing up more bearable. A clever pull out table top is located just above the fridge, which proves useful when preparing meals. When using the cooker it’s necessary to pull up the toughened glass lid (which creates an additional kitchen surface) and the same applies with the sink and draining board - these have to be down when driving. When using the grill it is necessary to pull out the heat shield. The fridge can be powered by battery or Calor Gas, a 6kg bottle being stored in a cupboard outside the vehicle. The gas, which also powers the heating, can only be turned on when the vehicle is stationary by rotating a dial above the bottle anticlockwise. A full bottle should last two weeks and it is wise to carry a back-up – there is room for this in the cupboard. Our bottle has not lasted long enough and it has proved difficult to find an exact match for the bottle. On more than one occasion I have been advised that Calor Gas had modified the traditional 6kg bottle to a lighter version. When purchasing Calor Gas the retailer swaps the bottle with one of the same size and type. Consequently this is a difficult task made all the harder by the fact that travelling at the end of the holiday season means that many stocks are already low. But we eventually have success in Castleton. Our drinking water is supplied from 100 litres of bottled spring water, which when emptied we fill back up to top up the fresh water tank. Hot water is achieved within 20 minutes of switching on water heater control by the rear door. Sizeable adjustable skylights throughout provided additional light, giving an airy feel and help make the vehicle feel more spacious. All windows and skylights are fitted with fly screens, blackout blinds and curtains helping ensure a good night’s sleep. Equipped with an efficient 2.2-litre, 130bhp diesel engine, sixspeed gearbox and cruise control the Peugeot returns around 30mpg and covered over 550 miles on a single tank, which is pretty good going considering it’s 9ft 10inches tall and 7ft 7inches wide and is heavily laden with far too much luggage. That extra height and width over a normal vehicle requires careful manoeuvring. Driving close to the centre white line helps ensure that the sides don’t get scratched by hedges and overhanging branches - we haven’t travelled over 60mph for the duration of the test. There is a commanding driving position, on a par with small trucks and certainly much higher than your typical 4x4. When stationary, Harriett particularly likes to sit at the front and try her hand at steering and gear changes. A neat touch is the fact that the handbrake is at the right of the driver’s seat rather than in the centre as is usually the way. This frees up more space to create a clear walkway throughout making it

quicker and easier to get to Harriett when she needs attention. The first night on the outskirts of Oxford is disastrous because Harriett is not going to sleep in her Moses basket or travel cot. On the second night, however, she sleeps in the captain’s bunk with its safety rail and curtain. Both my wife and her have their best night’s sleep in seven months! From that day on we really begin to relax and enjoy our break. In some towns we discover parking is a bit of an issue but because of the fairly compact size of the Nuevo II it is possible to park in places that other motorhomes were unable to such as the layby of a road on the outskirts of Bakewell, which is heaving with tourists. Reversing is made easier by the helpful addition of a camera that feeds an image through to the rear view mirror. On entering the vehicle through the rear Seitz door there is an electrically operated step for easy access and a rail to further aid entry. It’s not often that you can say a vehicle created a truly memorable family holiday. New price: £47,600

 SINCE TAKE That came off the road Gary Barlow has been up to all sorts, from X Factory judging to surprising fans on their wedding day by turning up unannounced and having a right old jolly up. That surprise element is part of the reason he´s here today as last week shoppers at Cabot Circus mall in Bristol got a chance to stop and gawp, and film him singing and playing his piano, and cheekily when he first sat down he wore a Gary Barlow mask. It was apparently set up by BBC Radio Bristol which beggars the question ´Where will Gary turn up next? In your garden perhaps. Here´s a short vid for you. ONE OF the many things I like about the music business is the respect there seems to be between different artists, it can’t be a total love-in obviously, but percentage-wise it’s rare for musicians to get on each other’s case. I´m talking mostly here about the older musicians, twittering and tweeting has blown it for the younger ones. Last year Bruce Springsteen surprised fans at U2’s Madison Square Garden by joining the group for ´I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For´ and ´Stand By Me,´ and Bono returned the favour last week at Springsteen´s Dublin concert singing ´Because The Night´ with him and here´s the video. MARY POPPINS was released 52 years ago, and although it’s quite a way off, the release of the follow up, ´Mary Poppins Returns´ is scheduled for Xmas day 2018. It will be a hard act to follow for Emily Blunt who´s to play Mary, and although we know Rob Marshall, who made ´Into The Woods´ will be directing, there´s no information as to who will be playing Bert, Mary´s cockney jack-of-all-trades closest friend so ham-fistedly played by Dick van Dyke in ´64. Emily is from Wandsworth, London, has been in 30 films to date and has won a dozen awards along the way. Director Rob Marshall said “I look forward to creating a movie musical that can bring back that childlike wonder in these most challenging of times. Good luck buddy.

Dolly and husband Carl are never Parton! THERE IS possibly no other artist, whatever line of showbiz they are in, that is more popular than Dolly Parton. The lovely lady from Sevier County, Tennessee, turned 70 in January, and on May 30th she and husband Carl Dean celebrated their 50 th wedding anniversary by renewing their vows. As I troll through the endless celebrity website pages looking for something more interesting for you to read than he or she has broken up with him or her, or some messy dirty laundry in public divorce, it’s pure joy to relate the life and times of Dolly Rebecca Parton. When she and Carl married in 1966 it was a tiny event with only Dolly’s mother and their minister and his wife in attendance. The renewal ceremony was a seriously different affair. Speaking to The People ahead of the event Dolly said “I’ll have a beautiful wedding dress, ‘cause I didn’t have a big long wedding dress when we got married and we’ve got a suit for Carl, so we’re going to dress up and take a bunch of pictures,” you can feel her overwhelming enthusiasm spilling over can you not. Then on a tad more serious note Dolly said “My husband is a loner, he doesn’t particularly care about being around anybody but me, he’s always asked me to leave him out of things, he doesn´t like all the hullabaloo,” something that clearly works for them! The couple met outside the Wishy Washy Laundromat in Nashville, Tennessee on the first day Dolly moved there having just signed with Monument Records. “Falling in love and getting married” she said “was the last things on my mind, yet, here was a tall, dark and handsome man sweeping me of my feet,” then the engagingly humorous side of Dolly admitted “I was surprised and delighted that while he talked to me, he looked at my face … a rare thing for me!” Alrighty!! To say Dolly´s career has been a success would be an understatement with her having sung such varied styles as country, country pop, pop, bluegrass and gospel, as well as writing and producing her own songs and as a musician playing guitar, banjo and autoharp mountain dulcimer. Then there´s her ability as an actress having starred in 20 films and countless TV shows, the list truly is endless. NOEL EDMUNDS dressed like a women last week, one with beard I might add, called her Priscilla Prim and uploaded a video of a rant against the BBC, something he´s done before, but not in such an over the top manner. Talking about his axed 90´s TV show ´Noel´s House Party´ Priscilla said “it’s jolly good family entertainment, of the kind whicah we´re no longer are associated, by watching Noel’s House Party and telling your friends about it, you’re reminding them of a bygone age when the BBC had an entertainment department,” followed on by “this was family entertainment and these days we don’t entertain the idea of such a thing as a family,” that I agree with, but in a dress and a full beard? Get real Noelie!

IF YOU are a Friends fan you will know the phrase ´Ugly Naked Guy´ UNG. If you are not a fan let me explain. The show was comedy smart in many ways by using lots of running jokes, including every now and then one of the group looking out of Monica´s apartment window and seeing UNG, then all the rest of them taking a look and cringing. He only made two on-screen appearances, but we never got to see his face. However Huffington Post launched a year-long investigation to track him down, and track him down they did! His name is Jon Haugen and he´s been quoted as saying “It was the best time in my life.” Whatever rings your bell Jon!

HEAVEN Skip said: “I have learned that in life, the first person we have to serve is ourselves. We can live the rest of our life in good health, with joy, laughter and adventures; the things that make our life heaven on earth rather than hell on earth.” And he went through his own miracle through positive thinking and understanding the power of the spirit. As a champion gymnast, an accident left him with a broken back; medical opinion was he would never walk again. However, he discovered Bruce Lee, the Kung Fu star of Hollywood, who broke his back and came back stronger and fitter. It was to be an inspiration. Skip found his path in Eastern philosophy and was not only able to walk but become a champion sportsman again. “It proved to me the human body is absolutely phenomenal. If you cut your arm or your face while shaving, what do you do? Nothing - because it heals itself. Steve Delaney Steve Delaney started a band called the Sharp Cuts in 1983, playing Rock ‘N’ Roll and Blues.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin

Mispronounced Words

For the last few weeks we have been talking about rhythm in words, and I have given you a few rules and guidelines to work out how it goes. In an ideal world, we would pick up the sounds of words from hearing them spoken correctly by others, which is of course how we learnt our native language, and why we think it is so easy! However, for most of us our Spanish learning experience is completely different, and in my years as a Spanish teacher I have found that there are certain pronunciation errors, and in particular word-beat errors, which crop up over and over again, to the point where they probably sound just right to us! Here are a few examples of what I mean. We’ll start with typical beginners’ mistakes, such as “sábado”, “lámpara” and “teléfono”. In each of these words the beat falls on the syllable third from the end, as indicated by the accents. Actually, the technical name for this type of word is “esdrújula” which I did mention the other day, although you will never need this information, unless you are helping a child with their “Lengua” homework! “Lengua” means “tongue” or “language”, and actually gives us another example of frequently mispronounced words. In the same category as “lengua” I would also put “farmacia”. In both cases the last syllable is a two-vowel combination (one weak and one strong vowel), so the beat falls on the last but one syllable, according to the rules. Therefore no accent is needed to indicate that the correct pronunciation is LENgua and farMAcia. Two words which I often hear said wrongly are “fácil” and “difícil” (easy and difficult). Going back to our basic rules again, these are words that end in a consonant so would be expected to beat on the last syllable, but as you see, they don’t. They are pronounced FAcil and diFIcil, as indicated by the accents. A lot of people are surprised at this, but I think their misconception comes from learning French at school. Here are three words that are not quite so common, but I find are tricky. They are “antídoto” (antidote), “anécdota” (anecdote), and “protocolo” (protocol). All three of these words sound a little clumsy to me, but notice that both “antídoto” and “anécdota” are esdrújula (hey, maybe that word is useful after all!), whilst “protocolo” is regular, with the beat like this protoCOlo. Strange words, and I’m not helped by the fact that my computer corrects them back into English every time I type them! Now for one final point about the beat on verbs. This point is really for the big children who have done lots of Spanish tenses, but also serves as a general word of warning to everyone. In certain cases we can change the meaning of a verb by changing where we place the beat. For example: “Hablo” means “I speak”, whereas “Habló” means “He or she spoke”. Much the same I felt about ‘Educating Archie’ on the steam radio - it was a clear-cut con. Obviously a ventriloquist on radio couldn’t be scrutinised for mouth moving. Now, I’m not saying I would set about Peter Brough’s ankles with a sledge hammer like crazy Kathy did with James Caan, but cynicism set in. The next loss of innocence was The Clitheroe Kid – who I totally believed was a cheeky 11 year old schoolboy and not a 40 something 4’3”confirmed bachelor who lived with his mum in Blackpool until, aged 51, took an overdose of sleeping pills. Radio in those days, if you’ll forgive the rather poncey precept, was the ‘Theatre of the Mind’. To my mind the best example was Hancock’s Half Hour ‘Sunday Afternoon At Home’. Not even John Osborne at his angst ridden kitchen sink miserable pomp could portray the suffocating dreariness of Britain during the 50’s the way it was captured at 23 Railway Cuttings, East Cheam. Hancock homburgs doffed to Galton & Simpson’s marvellous radio & later TV scripts. Unfortunately the goods never materialised on the big screen. It became clear watching ‘The Punch & Judy Man and ‘The Rebel’ that the simple compact TV settings were more suited to hangdog Hancock. Ironic too, that while his film career stalled, those he cast aside (Sid James, Hattie Jacques, Kenneth Williams) ‘Carried On’ rather nicely. The same happened to Morecambe & Wise – lest we forget these turkeys ‘The Intelligence Men’ – ‘That Riviera Touch’ & ‘The Magnificent Two’. Trying to recreate the Crosby/Hope road trip shtick was a folly too far. Now! Faithful reader, I need your razor sharp recall (snort). The radiogram I remember - it was the size of a modest garden shed & when the valves got hot, it smelt like one - dead beetles & mouse pee. Where I’m struggling is the telly, a basic black & white job. Did we really have to put 2 bob in the meter? Was there a magnifying lens to clip on to enlarge the titchy 10 inch tube? Lemony chicken burgers with roasted red pepper sauce

INGREDIENTS 2 lbs ground chicken 1 lb frozen spinach, thawed, drained and chopped 6 Spring onions, chopped 2 eggs, lightly beaten 6 tbsp parmesan cheese 4 tsp lemon zest 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 tsp paprika salt and pepper, to taste 8 burger buns Roasted Red Pepper Sauce 2 large roasted red peppers, peeled and seeded 8 Spring onions, chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced 4 tbsp olive oil 4 tsp Dijon mustard 2 tsp honey 1 1/2 tsp fresh basil, chopped salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

DIRECTIONS 1. In a large mixing bowl, lightly mix ground chicken, spinach, spring onion, egg, parmesan cheese, lemon zest, garlic, paprika, salt and pepper. Form into 8 patties and chill for 30 minutes. 2. To grill burgers: Preheat barbecue on MEDIUM/HIGH, and oil the grids generously to prevent sticking. Place the patties on the grill, and reduce heat to MEDIUM. Place patties on the barbecue, and sear 3 minutes per side, taking care not to press down the patties. 3. Reduce heat to LOW and continue cooking for another 3 minutes per side until juicy but cooked through. Refer to guide for Perfect Grill Marks. Lightly toast the buns during the last 2 minutes of cooking time. Serve on toasted burgerbuns, topped with Roasted Red Pepper Sauce. 4. Sauce: SautĂŠ onion and garlic very gently. Add to food processor with remaining ingredients and process until well blended.

Summer braised chicken with tomatoes A simple light casserole with cannellini beans, basil and green chilli served with gluten-free Parmesan cornmeal Ingredients 2 tbsp olive oil 3 banana shallot, finely sliced 4 chicken legs 300ml gluten-free chicken stock 2 large garlic clove, peeled but left whole a few lemon thyme sprigs 400g cherry tomatoes 3 plum tomatoes, quartered 400g can cannellini beans, drained and rinsed 1 green chilli, finely sliced 175g quick-cook fine polenta 85g finely grated Parmesan knob of butter small bunch basil, leaves picked and torn, to serve Method 1. Heat oven to 190C/170C fan/gas 5. Heat 1 tbsp of the oil in a shallow flameproof casserole dish over a medium heat. Throw in the shallots and soften, then remove and set aside. Season the chicken, turn up the heat and add to the pan with the remaining oil, browning all over. Return the shallots to the dish, pour over the stock and add the garlic, thyme, tomatoes, beans and chilli. Bring to the boil, cover and put in the oven for 30 mins or until the chicken is cooked through. Remove the lid and cook for 10 mins more to reduce the sauce. 2. Meanwhile, pour the polenta into 700ml boiling water while whisking. Cook for 2

mins (or according to pack instructions). Season generously, remove from the heat and stir through the Parmesan and butter. Serve the polenta with the chicken on top, scattered with basil.

Paternity Testing – think carefully about the issues Sometimes a paternity test may be ordered by a court in relation to child maintenance. If a court-directed paternity test is required for legal reasons, the court will require the samples to be taken under strict conditions by a test provider accredited by the courts. If the person with parental responsibility refuses consent for a child to be tested but the court considers the test is in the child’s best interests, the court may order the test to go ahead. A direction can also be sought from the court if the man or mother refuses consent for a paternity test. However, more often than not, it is individuals that seek paternity testing. If you’re considering a paternity test, it’s important to think carefully about the issues involved, for example: whether testing is in the child’s best interests the impact of the test result on all family members If contemplating a paternity test it is always advisable to have a consultation with a sympathetic G.P. who can help you to consider what is involved and possibly arrange counselling. If a person decides to go ahead with a paternity test they should be careful to use a reputable medical clinic and laboratory. Never consider home testing kits bought off the internet! DNA and Paternity Tests Every child inherits DNA from both its parents. DNA needs to be analysed from: the man the child the mother All three individuals, the man, the child and the mother need to provide a sample containing their DNA so it can be analysed accurately. The most favoured method of testing is performed by collecting buccal cells found on the inside of a person’s cheek using a buccal swab or cheek swab. These swabs have wooden or plastic stick handles with a cotton on synthetic tip. The collector rubs the inside of a person’s cheek in order to collect as many buccal cells as possible. The buccal cells are then sent to a laboratory for testing. Alternatively, a blood sample may be taken. If only the child and the man are tested (motherless testing) the results will be less accurate.

Consent for a Paternity Test Each person must give written consent to their sample being taken and tested. For a child under 16, a person with parental responsibility may consent on their behalf. If a child or young person can understand the issues involved, their opinion should be taken into account when deciding whether the test is in their best interests. Pre-Natal Testing A paternity test can be carried out in pregnancy to determine whether a man is the baby’s father, before the baby is born. Pre-natal testing is an extremely sensitive subject because of the many moral and ethical issues involved. It is advisable that parties take the time to discuss this with their G.P.or Midwife. Should the result be unexpected or not the result that is hoped for, the woman may then not wish to continue with the pregnancy. However, an unwanted paternity test result is unlikely to be considered adequate grounds for terminating a pregnancy. For this reason, some doctors may be unwilling to carry out a pre-natal paternity test, when the only reason for the test is to confirm the baby’s father’s identity. DNA samples will be taken from the man and the pregnant woman, again by using buccal swabs or a blood test. The DNA of the unborn baby can be taken by testing either: Amniotic fluid (amniocentesis) Placental tissue (chorionic villus sampling) Samples are taken either with a needle via the abdominal wall or by passing a small tube via the vagina and cervix. Both procedures carry a small risk of miscarriage and must be performed with the woman’s consent. Anybody who is considering paternity testing should give it a great deal of thought. If the result is unexpected or not the result you want, it can affect everyone involved for the rest of their lives.

Wolfpack backs MABS by Jack Troughton MEMBERS OF the Wolfpack Golf Society marked the death of former Captain Tony Brookes with a special Charity Day – raising 800€ for the <MABS Cancer Support Group. In March this year, Tony Brookes sadly passed away after a short, but debilitating, illness. He was a colourful character who epitomised everything that is good about the Wolfpack - friendship, kindness, humour and a love of the game. His presence continues to be missed. And to remember Tony, it was decided to stage the charity day. The chosen charity was MABS, which provided such excellent care for Tony and his wife Carol to help make life as comfortable as possible during a difficult time. As a result, 22 players turned out at Las Colinas to celebrate Tony’s life and thanks to the generosity of society members - even those who didn’t play on the day - Las Colinas staff and the Royal Oak pub, money was raised for a charity helping those suffering from the disease, their family and friends. At the Royal Oak, a presentation was attended by players and wives; Carol Brookes presented the cheque for €800 to Anne Muff, accepting it on behalf of the nursing arranged by MABS. Thanks to the kindness of many, MABS will again be able to support families in need of care in their darkest times. Acting Society Captain Steve Lugger said: “Some things in life are worth doing – this Charity Day was definitely one of them.”

Pego golf society On the most perfect morning for golf, today we played one of our major competitions called “The President’s Cup” which was a medal competition against the course. There was a field of 44 players, two of whom were guests, and they were Steve Jones and Chris Levett. The course has almost recovered after the severe aerating of the greens, and overall, a lot better than last week. In the main part of the competition, the results were as follows 1st Place was Shaun O’Gorman with 73 net off a handicap of 5.4 2nd Place was Bob Jenkins with 74 net playing off handicap of 18 3rd Place was Danny Herron with 74 net off a handicap of 13.3 4th Place was Brian Barden with 75 net playing off a handicap of 17.9 5th Place was Tony Jerman with net 76 playing off a handicap of 23.3 6th Place was Penny Bardon with net 76 playing off a handicap of 15.2 The player of the day today was undoubtedly Shaun O’Gorman breaking 80 gross round Oliva Nova today. There were only two 2’s today, and they were by Steve Jones and Peter Rapley. Shaun O’Gorman did have a two, but did not enter into the competition. The “Balls in the Water” prize numbered 94 Nearest the hole at Hole 5 with their second short was John Evans with only 2.5 meters, from the flag, and at hole 16 the closest was Peter Rapley with 2.62 meters. Bowled over at Javea Inn On The Green! On Wednesday the 01st June, Javea Inn on the Green facilitated the Dave Sackman Memorial Trophy competition. Most people recall Dave as being passionate about standards and about his role at Javea Bowls Club. To this day, people still ensure that his strict standards of ensuring correct dress are still adhered to. This is a popular 3 day competition and it is open to all members of registered bowls clubs to enter. All the competitors choose their 3 players in their team and they are then drawn against other teams in a series of 3 different combinations of games. Hence the name of the 3.2.1. Triples competition. In the first game, all 3 players in the team play against another team in their group consisting of 3 players. In total there are four groups. Then in the next combination of game, only 2 of the 3 members of the team play against another team consisting of 2 players. The last game consists of the remaining player who did not play in the pairs games to play singles against the other singles players in their group. All the scores from all 3 combinations are then totalled up and the winning team is put forward to play the semifinal against another winning team in the other groups. The organiser of this competition was Bill Barrie. He put in some long hours and went to considerable effort to ensure that this competition ran as smoothly as it did over the Three days. Thank you for making this an enjoyable event and well done Bill! Following some exciting games, the teams through to the semi- finals were; Los Amigos, Bring it on, The Terminators and Tricid. The Bring it on team consisting of John and Pat Pittaway and Dave Gardiner. They played against the Terminators who consisted of Felicity Jenkins, Chris Brackstone and Graham Howlett. It was a close fought game, to the effect that they had to play

an extra end to find the eventual winner. It was clear to see that all teams had the utmost respect for each other during play. After some excellent bowls, the team through to the final were Bring it on. In the next semifinal, Tricid, consisting of Halina Leeder, Paul Truncheon and Ian Brown played against the Los Amigos team who were Carol and David Meare and Wendy Symonds. Again, some good bowling and Tricid gave Los Amigos a run for their money but in the end Los Amigos triumphed and were through to the final. The final, who all happened to be an all Javea Bowls club members started with the triples game and this was a really exciting match. The bowling standard was worthy of being of professional status. From a spectators viewpoint we were treated to some excellent shots and sounds of ooohs and aahs and applause was common place as each shot came into play.

The pairs game came next and again some awesome bowls were placed around the jack. In one head, Pat Pittaway bowled her three woods and each one touched the jack and all three woods were lying next to the jack, only for the opposition to take her glory away by delivering some exellent counter shots. The deserved winners of the Final and the Dave Sackman Trophy were Los Amigos! Consisting of: Carol Meare, David Meare and Wendy Symonds who all played wonderfully throughout this competition and well done to them. Javea Bowls Club would also like to thank Dave Sackman’s Family for their continued support. Our next matches commence next week, The Walton Trophy and The Rose Bowl. CHARITY ‘CALPE Beacon’ is staging a ‘Summer Rastro’ on Sunday 12th June between 11am and 4pm at Restaurante El Faro at La Manzanera 9L. It is a fund raising market to raise funds to help local underprivileged children and will feature food, drinks, a raffle and music.

THE LAST afternoon tea was served at Casa de Animo by Jalon Valley HELP on Sunday and enjoyed by everyone attending the charity’s ‘drop in centre’ in Alcalali. Casa de Animo opened four years ago to provide support and advice for the whole community in the Vall del Pop, whatever their nationality. And afternoon tea has established itself as a popular monthly event for everyone. Run by HELP volunteers; it has always been an afternoon full of fun – with people overcoming any language barriers to chat, laugh, and enjoy homemade cakes. The final service of afternoon tea also gave the opportunity to raise a glass to everything that has been achieved at Casa de Animo and toast the future of the new Animo, which will open in the Centro Civico in Alcalali in July. And HELP will be popping the kettle back on for the first afternoon tea in the new premises on the first Sunday in August between 4pm and 6pm.

Hyundai Tucson WE LIVE in an era of big grilles.

This phenomenon has only started recently but any car you care to think of now boasts one, from the Ford Fiesta to the Peugeot 508. It has only really hit me during my test of the Hyundai Tucson; the chunky off roader with permanent four wheel drive. It too has a big grille, which definitely enhances its character as you can see in the video at testdrives.biz. In a marketplace where there are a range of Chelsea tractors it is an increasing challenge for manufacturers to set themselves apart from the competition. Like an artist or writer might look to others for inspiration, bits have clearly been taken from elsewhere. For instance, a quick glance at the rear reminds me of the considerably more expensive Porsche Cayenne but thankfully the front has greater character. I do find that the rear lights get in the way a bit when loading shopping into the boot. Probably my fault because the trolley is to the right and I have to negotiate the protruding lights. But I am in a car park and cannot put the trolley immediately beside the boot because there is not room. However, there are some luxurious touches to this sub £30,000 motor, which make your head turn, too. I don’t expect to find heated rear seats that the passengers can operate themselves. Neither do I expect to find that the steering wheel can be switched from normal to sports mode. It’s a neat touch but I question how necessary this is. The seats are leather. “The Hyundai Tucson revives a name the firm used for its mid-sized SUV in days gone by,” says Parkers, the car experts. “We’re not talking centuries Facts at a glance ago, though – the previous generation was on sale between 2004 and 2009, but was replaced by the ix35. Watch the video at www.testdrives.biz The Tucson is an easy vehicle to drive but despite the helpful reversing camera such a manoeuvre can be difficult and time consuming when trying to get within the white lines in a car park. I give up and take two spaces. There is a blind spot when reversing and this is a bit of a flaw for me because the Tucson does feel a little too big and cumbersome for me. Remove this problem and it would be almost perfect. Other little issues are the noises that this vehicle makes when you drive too fast or get too near the centre white line of the road. I discover that I can switch the lane departure warning off but I really fail to see why all these beeps and buzzers are included. They just serve to irritate. Sometimes it is all too easy for manufacturers to include as many bells and whistles as they can in the hope of ticking every box regardless of whether they are necessary or not. As with writing the Kiss principle impressed upon my by my former news editor would not go a miss. Keep It Simple Stupid.
