EL CAMPELLO - LA SAFOR

ANGRY COUPLE Richard and Pauline Pope are fi ghting a shock 10,000€ tax demand after being forced to surrender their home to the bank. by JACK TROUGHTON

10 Reasons to Buy Spanish Property within a UK Limited Company. PAGE 31.

UNABLE TO pay a large mortgage when Ritchie gave up work to care for Pauline as she successfully battled cancer; they took the bank’s advice and handed the keys back and now rent the Costa Blanca property. However, despite both now working, they still struggle to make ends meet and were disgusted when a letter from SUMA dropped onto the doormat. “Our main gripe is after we handed the keys back, we had this letter from the taxman telling us we owed 10,000€ - that’s apparently because the house has changed hands – but we never got a dime,” he said. “If I had that sort of money, the bank

would not have our house; and certainly no money has changed hands – where do they think I would suddenly get 10 grand from? I have been going to the bank for months saying we have no money...it’s staggering.” Benidorm advice company Alba Consultas is acting for the Popes and negotiating with La Caixa Bank and SUMA – attempting to get the tax offi ce to deal with the bank. “We were trying to do this to attempt to get some money behind us,” added Ritchie. “But all it is doing is costing us more money. A word from JT THE HORSES are finally out on the track, it’s the final week of the run into the EU referendum but neither nags – that’s the Cameron Kidz and the Boris Boyz (please note the modern spellings) – can be seen as seasoned thoroughbreds as they come under starter’s orders. All and sundry amongst our excitable elected representatives seem to have taken up the colours of one jockey or the other, some have certainly switched during the Brexit campaigning, and the bookies are constantly swapping the odds for ‘leave’ or ‘remain’. Record numbers of expats have registered to vote, putting their money on one side or the other; those barred by broken promises to get a voice, rightly feel shortchanged. Anyone wanting to hear a grownup debate must also be a little peeved at arguments that appear to have been thought up in a public school tuck shop queue. Where were the facts from either side allowing voters an informed choice? Instead, juvenile mud-slinging appears to be the way of things in a suited and booted TV drama – packed with sad clichés - that has had viewers searching for the remote...the great British press has not helped matters either. A famous citizen of the United States of America, a fan of the ‘special relationship’, suggested (as a jape?) the UK signs up to become another a significant part of the stars and stripes. What a great idea (not). We would then be making a choice between Ms Clinton and Mr Trump in a kindergarten lottery.

Benidorm battles to take control THE TOWN of Benidorm has seen a growing number of residents and holidaymakers, both Spanish and British, speaking out over concerns for their safety when visiting the resort. by Caroline Tyszka Such is the gravity of the situation one independent Spanish online media source, interviu.es, has published information pertaining to eleven police officers who are now under investigation, for amongst other things the attack on a bouncer in April this year. Costi Guduleasa, a Romanian doorman, has spoken out about his treatment by several police officers following his very public arrest, stating that even though he was handcuffed and on the ground he was kicked in the face, resulting in severe bruising and the loss of his job. The online publication along with other respectable Spanish organisations have united and announced a petition which they would give to the town hall, demanding that crime and corruption in the town is dealt with. The petition which details the group’s love of Benidorm and passion to stop the resort becoming another Magaluf would be passed to the Ministry of Interior if no action was taken. IMMEDIATELY following the Interviu article the town hall announced that they had planned to increase security patrols for the area following the rise in recent altercations. At the Local Government Board meeting held at the end of last week attendees were quick to assert that they had already made plans to reinforce security in the resort prior to the recent negative press – locally, nationally and internationally. The “guri zone,” as it is known locally, the main focus for the additional patrols, covers from Avenida Murcia to Avenida Philippines and includes streets such as Gerona, Lepanto and Ibiza. It has been reported that the local safety board has put the focus of the increasingly violent incidents on the nightclub bouncers rather than a lack of law enforcement, with one report in the last week saying that three doormen from the English square had been arrested for the attempted murder of another doorman. The victim, who was working for a recognised security company, felt that he had been targeted because he was interfering with their drug dealing since he had replaced one of their colleagues. In addition, the plans for a new SATE office in the Rincon area, which will be a police checkpoint and tourist office, have suddenly been given the green light – despite being promised a few years ago and rumoured last month to have again been put on the back burner. The councillors also discussed problems such as the “pea men” and prostitution with the aim of increased patrols, both on foot and in vehicles, hopefully making visitors to the town feel safer.

SATE office reopens in La Cala de Finestrat THE SERVICE for Foreign Tourist Assistance (SATE) office has reopened for the summer at the La Cala beach area of Finestrat. The office, which will be open until September 30th 2016, is run jointly between the Guardia Civil and the local police officers and is situated on Avenida de Finestrat nº8. In its third year SATE is a service dedicated to foreigners and provided in several languages. The office helps those who need to report stolen or lost credit cards, passports and communicate with embassies’ and consulates. They also assist victims of crime, making denuncias and ensuring that the processes are made as easy as possible.

Destiny calling

BRITISH VOTERS go to the polls next Thursday to finally have their say in the historic EU Referendum; deciding whether the UK remains part of the European Union. by Jack Troughton For weeks the ‘remain’ and ‘leave’ campaigns have been putting forward their case in the ‘Brexit’ ballot but on 23rd June, destiny is in the hands of those entitled to vote. And this week, RTN chatted with two expats over their views; for and against the EU. Jacqui Cotterill lives in Parcent and Lorna Ainsworth in Javea. Both have followed the debate but represent the different sides. Jacqui does not have a vote under the controversial 15-year rule – she believes all British citizens should have a voice in the referendum and UK general elections – but backs ‘remain’. “Firstly, because I believe it is best for Britain. I would worry about the effect on the economy, long and short term, and the effect on security and peace,” she said. “I believe it is better to work together with your neighbours around the table rather than isolate yourself from them. “I think the EU has guaranteed many of the civic and environmental rights we now take for granted and which could be threatened without those guarantees.” Jacqui, Deputy Mayor of Parcent, said she is both British and a part of Europe. “As a long term resident in Spain, I want to remain because I feel a part of Europe; I am a British citizen integrated with Spanish neighbours and welcomed as a European...I don’t want to go back to being a foreigner.” And she said an ‘out’ vote would cause massive uncertainty over such things as health care, pensions, work permits and taxes and believed a reformed EU is the way forward. PEACE Jacqui said remaining in Europe gave access to a market 500 million people and living in peace with neighbours; celebrating a cultural integration – and believes many EU migrants were just ‘transient’ as they worked in the UK but would later move back to their home countries. “For me, Great Britain means a country and people who look outwards, influencing the world with our democracy and traditions and I hope we continue to do so.” However, Lorna thinks Britain would be better standing alone and after a brief shallow recession would prosper, while being able to stop mass migration, adding: “There was just too many people all at once; putting a strain on things like the NHS and schools.” She used to work as a health professional and said leaving the EU would be a positive step and enhance her role in the world. “From my research, there’s nothing to prevent the UK from being a successful nation without Europe; we have done it before,” said Lorna. “I have a friend working as a lawyer with the European Commission. His advice was to ‘get out as quickly as possible’.” And she believes nothing will happen to effect expats for at least two years as governments make representations about its citizens. “People talk about EU reform. They cannot do it unless they break it up and start again...the Eurozone is bust and it needs complete reform...the whole emphasis is on a Federal Europe,” she said. “Europe has done nothing over the last 48 years to rectify its faults and we are the leading democracy in the world – we don’t need Mrs Merkel and Germany’s woeful lack of democracy. “No matter what happens, the EU will not stop trading with the UK and we will not lose our cultural ties.”

CONTINUED FROM FRONT PAGE EMBARGO “And now our bank account has been embargoed by SUMA, not that there is a lot in there, but they are stopping me use the account to pay things like the electricity bill. I have to pay bills through our advisors. “It is absolutely incredible they can do this to you. I had paid the mortgage for nine years – and they want 10,000€ for the pleasure of it all...and then they embargo your account so you cannot get the money to buy food or pay bills, or anything.” Ritchie and Pauline moved to Spain in 2004 with daughter Jessica, now 18. Sadly, they lost nearly 90,000€ after investing in an ‘offplan’ home in Alcalali. “The building never went ahead and I was robbed of the money.” The builder was later jailed for his part in a scam that cost victims in the around 10 million Euros. The Popes moved to an apartment in Polop, and towards the end of 2006 bought their home in La Nucia – the property bubble was still to burst, and they paid 315,000€. Ritchie said they were able to put down 80,000€ and took on a large mortgage to secure the property. “And literally three months later we were hit by the biggest recession so far on

record – everything went wrong; I couldn’t find work here, I am a builder, a roofer by trade,” he said. INTEREST He started travelling back to the Isle of Man to work, staying a fortnight at a time and living in a caravan to save to pay the bank loan. La Caixa did attempt to help by changing the mortgage to an ‘interest only’ advance for a time. However, disaster struck in March 2014. Pauline was diagnosed with cancer and underwent surgery at Villajoyosa hospital before six gruelling months of radio and chemotherapy. Ritchie could no longer return to the UK to work and again went to the bank for advice and was told the best thing was for the house to be repossessed and the family rent the home at a reduced rate. “We were in a desperate situation and all our money had gone,” he said. “In the circumstances, and trying to keep mind and soul together and look after my wife and daughter, I decided the best thing was to hand the house back and rent it.” After ‘fantastic” treatment but still going back for three monthly checks, Pauline has remained free of the disease and is currently working part time – Ritchie works as a DJ in a Benidorm bar and Jessica is chipping in when she can as she finishes final exams. “We have got through all the illness and come through to the other side – I know Pauline is getting stronger – but suddenly we are hit with this tax bill,” said Richie. “You throw the dice and think nothing can get worse...but it can. Just how much can one family take?”

Get well soon Carter!

CARTOONIST CARTER McKeague was suddenly taken ill last weekend and both RTN and its readers wish him a swift recovery. Carter’s pictures and the genuine warmth of his take on the world have struck a chord with people over the years – his cartoons have even become teaching aids with English students along the coast. “He is a genuine talent and much-loved by a growing number of fans who appreciate his eye for detail and sense of humour,” said RTN’s Editor Jack Troughton. “He has the ability to make sometimes complex issues fun. “We all hope he is soon back at the drawing board and underlining the absurd nature of the world at large. In the meantime, we all want to send Carter and his wife Mirella our best wishes.”

Orlando shooter was known to the FBI OMAR MATEEN who killed at least 50 people and left 53 others injured in Orlando was known to the FBI. by Caroline Tyszka Omar Mateen called 911 last Sunday morning minutes before he walked into a gay nightclub in Florida and opened fire on his innocent victims. Swearing his allegiance to Islamic State the gunman had sat quietly with the other patrons of the Pulse nightclub before calmly getting up and shooting them one by one. Eyewitnesses reported that Mateen picked out those who were pretending to be dead, and then proceeded to shoot them before moving on to his next victim. Omar had been on the FBI watch list until recently when it was decided that he was not considered a threat. Just days after this decision he was able to purchase an assault rifle and handgun. Mateen was shot dead as officers stormed the club in an attempt to release several hostages. Seddique Mir Mateeen said that he did not believe this was a terror attack but more lightly to have been a homophobic incident triggered by the sight of a gay couple kissing in Miami. “He saw two men kissing each other in front of his wife and kid and he got very angry,” he said. Federal investigators digging for clues in the Orlando nightclub massacre are zeroing in on Noor Salman, his widow, about if in fact her husband was gay, as he had visited the club several times, and what she knew of his plans. The US attorney plans to bring evidence before a federal grand jury following Salman giving conflicting statements about what she knew of her husband’s intentions in the hours before the attack.

More arrested in criminal drug gang by Caroline Tyszka GUARDIA CIVIL officers seized almost three tons of hashish which was ready to be distributed throughout Spain and France. Seventeen people were arrested under operation MOUNTED II/TRUCE which was established over eight months ago to dismantle criminal organisations dedicated to drug trafficking nationally and internationally. The gang, who were operating in Cadiz, Seville, Madrid and Zaragoza comprised of twelve Spanish nationals, three Moroccans and two Gibraltarians. Police searched several properties during the operation and seized 2,446 kg of hashish, firearms, vehicles and cash. Following the initial reporting of the operation additional investigations by the Guardia Civil found that the hashish was being brought from Morocco to Cadiz by boat where it was then distributed to Navalcarnero, near Madrid, as well as Zaragoza. Officers in Cadiz were able to seize another shipment of hashish when they intercepted one of the inflatable boats being taken from the water by a tractor.

Russia congratulates their football hooligans A RUSSIAN MP has been reported as openly encouraging his nation’s football fans to “keep it up” following the shocking violent scenes between Russia and England supporters at Saturday night’s match, a situation that has not improved during the week. by Caroline Tyszka Igor Lebedev, who is also an executive member of the country’s football union took to twitter and posted, “I don’t see anything wrong with the fans fighting. Quite the opposite, well done lads, keep it up!” As the week has progressed fears that the two groups of fans would clash again became a reality although to

a minor extent and police in Lille attempted to curtail a concerning situation on Wednesday evening. English supporters had gathered in their hundreds and become rowdy with flares being released and a naked man climbing a lamp post. At this point the riot police moved in and, along with British Police, attempted to disperse the crowd. Tear gas, pepper spray and batons were used on the fans several times as 16 people were taken to hospital. At least 36 people

were arrested. UEFA has warned Russia and England that they could face disqualification if there is further violence. Three thousand England fans were handed banning orders preventing their travel to France due to previous offences, while French authorities said only 30 Russian supporters were barred from travelling. Half a million fans from the UK are thought to be at the tournament.

Poniente beach Olympic lanes by Caroline Tyszka BENIDORM’S PONIENTE beach now has two swimming lanes, both 50 metres long, the equivalent of two Olympic sized swimming pools. The areas, which are marked by buoys, are to enable keen open water swimmers the opportunity to safely enjoy their sport. Ana Pelicar, Councillor for Sports, told

reporters on Monday that the area in front of the Elche Park had been chosen as it offered “the most protection from the wind.” Several local swimming clubs participated in using the lanes which will remain open throughout the summer months. One of the swimmers, Gabriel Ruiz, said that “we wanted to have a secure area to swim without worrying about jet skis, boats and water ski’s, having the buoys’ offers us this safety.”

Evening markets

The popular Farmers Market in Jalon switches to being an evening event next month running from 6pm to 10pm on Saturday 2nd July. The main square by the church will be home to more than 40 stalls selling a huge range of produce and crafts – with the traditional Spanish ‘coca’ and wine tasting at its heart. And during the summer the market will be staged twice a month; the next is 16th July, followed by the 4th and 20th August.

Dealz cut the ribbon to their value store RTN were delighted to be invited to the inauguration of the new Dealz store at the La Marina shopping centre in Finestrat last week. by Caroline Tyszka

DIXIE JUMBLE – a Valencia-based three piece – is the special guest at the Season Finale of the Costa Blanca Blues series of matinee concerts on Sunday (19th June).

Shoppers had been emptying the shelves throughout the day on Thursday 9th June - opening day – and as the official inauguration took place later, at 7 pm, the store was still full of “Poundland” fans. Local dignitaries in attendance were Juan Francisco Pérez, mayor for Finestrat, Dolores Viudes Councillor for Commerce and Victoria Curtis, Councillor for foreign residents. They were joined by Pavan Riyat-Ward the Poundland Marketing Controller from the UK, Álvaro Villamizar the Dealz Executive Director for Spain and Laura Rodríguez, Communications Manager. Pavan told the RTN: “We are delighted with the response that we have had since the opening of our first store in Torremolinos in 2014. When we then opened a shop in Madrid we were pleasantly surprised that a lot of our customers were Spanish, with the concept of having one fixed price appealing to them. We aim to give a better shopping experience than most expect from a discount retailer.” “The response that the RTN has had through their Facebook page, website and printed edition has been wonderful,” she said.

U3A meeting THE NEXT meeting of U3A Moraira Teulada is on Monday 4th July at Salon SL, Avenida Mediterraneo, Teulada.

Grand finale for blues fans

Alvaro Villamizar first brought the Poundland concept under the name of Dealz to Spain two years ago. Speaking of the success he told RTN: “When we started this adventure two years ago our target was to open ten stores in two years, and yet here we are having reached that target in just half of the time.” “We are the first to bring the idea of fixed pricing to the Spanish,” he said, “offering top brands at amazing value.” Over 60 million British people visit Spain every year, Alvaro explained, and the Dealz concept matched both Spanish and British people because of the fixed prices. The new store employs 30 local people who speak English as well as Spanish.

The doors open at 9.30am and the meeting proper starts an hour later; providing an opportunity to renew memberships, join groups and discover more about the association’s travel and cultural events. Unfortunately there will be no guest

speaker. Geoff Wingfield an ex-marine, whose talk was to be titled, ‘An interview with a Close Protection Officer’, has been forced to cancel. For further information, please go to our website www.u3amoraira-teulada.org.

The Sunday socials at the Bar Mediterraneo in Teulada are popular with music fans; and the band is billed as “a charming and swooning traditional American musical trio”. Dixie Jumble celebrates all of the romance and adventure found in blues, ragtime, jazz and swing music. The fun starts at 2pm and entrance is by 10€ donation. SPECIALIST ROYAL Navy mine clearance divers Peter Gallant and Robin ‘Harry’ Neave enjoyed meeting on dry land to a rare catch up. by JACK TROUGHTON Both served in a naval diving team based at Portland Harbour in Dorset in 1963 – Peter now lives in Jalon and Harry in Melbourne. However, with Harry visiting family in Spain, there was an opportunity for the former comrades to meet. Both were trained in bomb and mine disposal – dealing with suspect devices washed up on the coast or

caught in fishing nets, as well as other underwater duties. When ships visited Portland, their team would attach dummy limpet mines to hulls to help train the crew’s own divers in the art of searching for explosive devices after dark. After the Dorset posting, Peter went to the Far East to help clear Japanese munitions dumped in the sea between Singapore and Malaya at

the end of WW2, Harry was stationed in Malta dealing with unexploded bombs in the waters around the Mediterranean island during the war. And following their Navy service, Harry worked for a diving company recovering gold bullion from the wreck of HMS Edinburgh sunk on its voyage to Russia; Peter dived for oil companies operating around the world.

Pistorius sentencing by Caroline Tyszka THE ATHELETE Oscar Pistorius’s sentencing hearing began this week with the judge announcing on Wednesday that he will deliver a considered sentence on 6th July. Judge Thozokile Masipa’s decision at a courthouse in Pretoria followed a three-day court hearing broadcast around the world. The former Paralympian was accused of murdering his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, in February 2013 and was initially found guilty of culpable homicide, serving a year of a five year sentence in prison before being released under house arrest. In December 2015, the prosecution had the judgement overturned in South Africa’s Supreme Court and Pistorius was found guilty of murder. And this week, the court heard from a physiologist who monitored Pistorius during his trial and before sentencing. He described the defendant as being “anxious and depressed.” The defence team argued that his disability, both his legs were amputated as a young boy, and the time he had already served in jail should be taken as mitigating factors – deserving leniency. In an emotional impact statement by Ree-

va’s father said that whilst he had forgiven Pistorius, he must be punished. However, facing up to 15 years in prison, the athlete

was said to be too mentally ill to speak; despite him having given an interview at the beginning of the week.

Protecting the Puig Campana

THE MAYOR of Finestrat has called on the regional government to help the town protect the Puig Campana. Juan Francisco Perez has requested the assistance claiming that the town council are the only ones who clean the area, of which 80% comes under the Finestrat boundaries, which has been damaged by several fires and attacked by a plague of pine beetles. The Tomicus piniperda (common pine shoot beetle) is a bark beetle native throughout Europe, and is one of the most destructive shootfeeding species. Mr Perez has reportedly criticised the authorities saying that he did not believe they had addressed the beetle problem adequately this year, considering that a plague in Valencia a couple of years ago destroyed a large quantity of pines making them more susceptible to fire it was vital that this insect be kept under control. The Ministry of Environment has responded and said that the Puig Campana “had no major problems” with this insect and that general measures have been put in place, although they were not specific as to what these were.

Direct bus link moves closer

THE DIRECT bus link from Benidorm to the train station in Alicante has moved one step closer to reality with three route stops being announced. Buses will pick up from Avenida Jaime I, Europa and the bus station in Benidorm before heading off to Alicante. Whilst the official start date for the new service has not been established it is hoped that by the end of June the buses will be running, making it easier for travellers to move around the region and further afield. Officials at the town hall in Benidorm say that Jaime I may have two stops and that specially designed bus stops, which will clearly identifiable, will be erected at no cost to the public – as the concessionaire will be required to pay for the street furniture.

Politics and war Hot gossip MEMBERS OF U3A Vall del Pop were fascinated by guest speaker Alan Oliver’s insight into the Second Republic and the Spanish Civil War. by Jack Troughton Using slides and video clips, he revealed how complex the situation was between 1930 and 1939, with different factions struggling for power. In 1930, the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera collapsed, King Alfonso XIII abdicated and the Second Republic was established - the coalition governments that were elected became increasingly unstable and finally left wing. A coup by the fascist Generals in July 1936 followed, which initially, appeared to be only partially successful. However, with the help of German and Italian forces and after nearly three years of conflict – and despite the assistance given to the government by the Soviet Union - the rebels (Nationalists) achieved victory on 1st April 1939. The war, and the appalling genocide, proved to be a rehearsal for World War 2 and all its horrors.

Toddler snatched by Alligator Spanish rescue

A TWO year old boy was snatched by an alligator hundreds of migrants at the Florida Disney resort earlier this week.

THE GUARDIA Civil have rescued 714 immigrants in Italian territorial waters. Under operation FRONTEX the Rio Segura ship which is currently deployed in the Mediterranean has conducted two rescue operations in the past two weeks. The first rescue which took place on 4th June saw 392 people being saved from a drifting fishing boat and then more recently, on June 12th, a further 332 migrants were picked from the waters. The 380 men, 195 women and 139 children – including two babies – were given food and water in addition to being checked by a doctor. Generally they were all found to be well although the mother of one of the babies, which was born a sea, was airlifted to a local hospital suffering from low blood pressure. Since May the Spanish authorities have assisted in rescuing 1,559 immigrants in eight operations that have seen eight Egyptians being charged with human trafficking.

Recovery teams searching a lake near Florida’s Magic Kingdom Park after the animal dragged Lane Graves into a manmade lagoon late on Tuesday evening. The toddler was paddling in a foot of water on a beach beside the Seven Seas Lagoon when the animal attacked and dragged him away. Jerry Demings, Orange County Sheriff said: “The father was nearby and the alligator came up and attacked. The father struggled and tried to get his son but was not successful and he alerted others nearby to assist him.” On Wednesday Lane’s body was recovered, intact not far from where he had been grabbed. Demings said: “His body only had a few puncture wounds, it is more than likely that he drowned.” The boy’s parents, who are from Elkhorn, Nebraska, were identified as Matt and Melissa Graves. “The Graves family appreciates the support they have received and have asked for privacy as they grieve the loss of their son,” the sheriff’s department said on its Twitter page.

Mortgage Floor Clauses Beware of “free” or “No Win No Fees” claims. DEAR READERS, In today’s article we would like to warn you of the lack of information or misinformation that some companies and professionals are giving those affected by mortgage floor rate interest clauses, mainly in relation to claims known as “no win no fee”, or “if you do not get paid, we will not charge you. “ Professionals may offer those affected by floor interest rate clauses to claim on their behalf against the offending banks in front of the courts, stating that they will only charge their fees if the claims are accepted. We understand that this is positive for affected individuals, and indeed, our firm also offers this kind of service. However, whilst it is true that the chances of success may be very high, indeed our firm has successfully claimed in 100% of these cases, legally the client must still be informed that in the unlikely event of losing the court case, they could be sentenced by the court to pay the court costs of the process. This would mean paying the fees of the bank’s lawyer and procurator, as stated on the Article 394.1 of the Spanish Civil Jurisdiction Code, which states: “On the declaratory process, the costs of the first instance will be imposed on the party which all petitions have been rejected, unless the court considers, and give reasons, that the case presented serious legal or fact doubts.” In this regard, we understand that there are some additional legal strategies to minimize the risk of losing the legal proceedings and being asked by the court to pay the legal costs of the other party, for example: in addition to claiming for the floor interest clauses we also claim at the same time for the nullity of other clauses that are clearly abusive, and which appear in many mortgage loans, such as: .- Abusive Delay Interests. Currently a delay interest which is more than three times the legal interest is considered abusive. On 2016 the legal interest is of 3%, therefore, if you have a delay interest of more than 9%, you can claim against it as unfair or abusive. .-Nullity of other clauses such as those known as “early

termination of the loan”, where some banks reserve the right to terminate the mortgage loan and claim for all outstanding capital back, just for a simple delay in payment of a monthly installment. These clauses are unfair because they are not proportional, nor do they take into account the seriousness of the breach, and do not allow the consumers to update or repair the situation, etc. Therefore, in the claim it is advisable to ask not just for the mortgage floor rates clauses to be declared null and unfair,

but also other unfair terms included on the mortgage loan. By doing this, the chances of losing all the petition and being asked by the court to pay the cost of the bank’s lawyers will be extremely small. You as consumers must be correctly informed about the potential consequences and costs that by law could apply, in the event of losing the court claim. If you are affected by a mortgage floor clause, Contact us and we will help you.

Is it time to dump your premium bonds? Is it time the 21 million people with over £60 billion saved should cash in. Of course, you maybe could, just, win millions!!! Premium bonds are a savings account where the interest is based on a monthly prize draw and the annual prize rate is dropping from 1.35pc to 1.25pc. This is the average return, indicating that for every £100 paid in to bonds, on average £1.25 a year is be paid out. In practice, that’s impossible. The smallest prize is £25; so in practice if 20 people each had £100 in, for one to win £25-plus, the remaining 19 win nothing. They seduce with tax-free returns, but if you live in Spain that is not and has never been the case and in the UK now that’s no longer special with the new rule meaning all savings interest is automatically paid tax-free. It promised a unique safe haven but... Premium bonds are operated by NS&I which is Treasury-owned so your capital is as safe as it gets. This safety used to be a special charm, but these days all UK regulated savings accounts are protected up to £75,000 per person, per institution, by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme – while the maximum you can put in premium bonds is £50,000 – so the safety boon isn’t as big. So Premium Bonds are certainly not as good as they used to be, but ultimately it’s only worth re-allocating your cash if there’s something better out there… So unless you’re extremely lucky, premium bonds earn far less than the top savings and most investments – the safest bet is to get rid of them. The key to managing your wealth is to diversify and if you want the potential for growth in this low interest rate environment then the first option is to look at investing. Rise of British retirees to Spain increases household insurance enquiries Golden Leaves International Expat Services, providers of a range of expat services including home, pet, household, car insurance and wealth management, announced today that with the recent rise of expat retirees to Spain, they are now offering comprehensive and leading household insurance products to its customer base in the country. This has come off of the back of recently commissioned research that indicated that certain search terms on Google had increased exponentially over the last year or so. ‘Retirement homes in Spain’ Google search volumes increased 150% compared to this time last year, ‘retire to Spain from UK’ online enquiries are up 75% in past 12 months and website queries for ‘Best places to retire in Spain’ double year on year. Speaking about the findings, Barry Floyd, Managing Director at Golden Leaves International Limited said, “Brexit aside, these investigations demonstrate that Spain is becoming a more attractive proposition for UK retirees once again. It is already Brits who buy more Spanish property than expats from any other country and this trend is likely to continue. So obviously we’d be looking to be their first port of call when it comes to offering comprehensive household insurance at a highly competitive price. The product stacks up incredibly well when compared to its nearest competitors namely Mapfre, Intasure, Liberty Seguros and Helvetia, and is underwritten by certain underwriters at Lloyd’s, the world’s leading insurance market, designed exclusively for European expatriates with property in Spain. For more information about GL International Expat Services’ household insurance, please call 8000 98309, visit glexpatservices.com or pop in and see their team at their either of their new offices: in Javea, in the Arenal at Avenida De La Pla 123-125, Edifico Caribe, Locale1 Javea 03730 Alicante or in Turre, Avenida De Almeria 39, local 1, Turre, 04638, Almeria. Kids Got Talent by Jack Troughton

YOUNGSTERS ALONG the coast have an opportunity to audition for a new talent contest and impress judges with their entertainment skills. Kids Got Talent is open to anyone under the age of 18 and able to make live auditions being staged in October – online entries will be open from 1st August. And organisers hope just like popular show Britain’s Got Talent it will entice a huge range of performers: comedians, magicians, jugglers, as well as singers and dancers. The grand final is scheduled for Saturday 5th November at a venue to be confirmed. Details and information about how

to enter and record and upload an audition video are available at www.telitec.com/kidsgottalent. The competition was launched at the Palau de Javea Restaurant in Javea Old Town when the winner and some runnersup from a ‘rehearsal’ competition – staged at the Family Fun Day in Teulada in April – were invited for brunch. Competition judges were also at the launch. They are: Howard Westacott of the Costa Blanca Male Voice Choir; Lucy Grande, of charity Make A Smile, and the restaurant’s Sergiu Stoiadin. Dancer Edu Velasquez walked away with 300€ after winning the April contest, money he will put towards studying at a

dance school in Barcelona. The 16-year-old from Benissa said: “My dream is to become a professional dancer and I want to go to London afterwards. “Kids Got Talent is great fun and really worth entering and it is a great opportunity for any performer.” Edu has been dancing since he was eight-years-old and is a member of ‘Footworks’ in Javea, where he dances ballet, tap, modern and jazz. Pictured is Edu (second from left) with runners-up Lois Quadflieg and Anna Browning, judges and organisers at the Palau de Javea

Living well from our garden EVER SINCE I started gardening in my parents, grandparents and school gardens and my own first mini garden in the 1940’s including things to eat has been an important element of our plant mixes.

by

Dick Handscombe Practical gardener and author

This led me to most enjoy holistic gardens with an element of cottage garden style and a series of patio gardens around the house including ones focussed on fruit vegetables herbs edible flowers and tree leaves plus eggs and poultry meat. Moving to Spain to retire early allowed me to seek to repeat the edible garden my family had in West London in order to eat well during the second world war. My efforts driven by the recommendation of my cancer surgeon back in 1993 that I retire early to Spain to an active life eating a traditional village Mediterranean diet rather than undergo radio and chemical treatments for a persistent slow growing cancer they would probably not have touched and I would have lost my mop of hair. Reports on the latest medical thinking in recent editions of the magazine ‘What Doctors Don’t Tell You’ demonstrate how forward thinking the surgeon was. A few years ago I gave a talk at a U3A conference at the Javea Parador on health for the third age illustrating how we gradually expanded the edible content of our garden in parallel with local agriculturalists using heavier and heavier doses of chemical fertilisers insecticides and fungicides and then eventually abandoning most of the local agricultural terraces and fields. Eventually I took on borrowed land to expand our eco vegetable and fruit production for the family, friends and a local Michelin starred restaurant and make some own eco olive oil. Now the external production has been cut back to levels appropriate to an almost 80 year old and can be fitted into the house garden. After the conference I expanded this into a booklet for people attending our talks. Later this was updated and published as a book titled ‘ Living well from our garden Mediterranean style’ available from Amazon Books UK Spain etc., to meet an increasing interest in ideas related to wellness gardens, what constitutes good and poor eating and what to grow most of based on the vitamin mineral and fibre content etc. In recent years I have often organised a tapas and paella lunch or dinner for friends and often the majority of the ingredients have been from the garden including most of the thirty ingredients required for producing a quality authentic Valencian paella. Something unfortunately rarely found in tourist restaurants these days as short cuts on ingredients and the method of cooking them have been introduced to survive the economic crisis.

If you are interested in the history, ingredients required, method of cooking a fully fledged paella for festive occasions and understanding the other rice dishes eaten by Spanish families on a day to day basis my twenty five years of observations and personal practice are now published as a booklet ‘ Your personal guide to making AUTHENTIC VALENCIAN PAELLAS’ . This is also available from Amazon Books. Hope that these two books help you make better use of your gardens and apartment terraces.

Accidentally misread Hi Aunty, I have an laptop running Windows 7 Home, with AVG, SuperAntiSpyware, and Malwarebytes free versions. About 2 months ago I accidentally misread “Upgrade” for “Update”, and installed a 14 day AVG Pro free trial. Since then I have been faced with a non-critical, but nevertheless annoying “AVG PRO purchase prompt” which overlays my AVG dashboard/home window whenever I attempt to access the dashboard. I thought I could lose this overlay by performing an AVG un-install and re-install from CNet, but all that has produced is AVG ZEN in addition to the AVG Free. The overlay is still present, appearing a few seconds after I open AVG, and covering the whole of the dashboard window so that I cannot access any of the options normally available via the dashboard. Can you point me to where this annoying overlay may be lurking so that I may defeat it in its lair? Rgds – AndyP

Reply: Perhaps the best thing to do is uninstall AVG form your system, and download a version of AVG from the AVG website, rather than CNET. It should be possible to uninstall AVG from the PC via the Uninstall options. If not, you can use the AVG removal tool at : http://www.avg.com/gb-en/utilities IF you want to install AVG again, then the versions here - http://www.avg.com/ww-en/ download.prd-afh-free - direct from AVG should be better than those from a third party site.

WITH A background in family and matrimonial mediation, Life Coach Sara Bell helps Readers with their daily worries. If you are having diffi culties with relationships, family, work or any other aspect of your life, then help is at hand.

Staying for my son MY MARRIAGE is on the rocks. My wife and I have slept in separate rooms since our son was 4. He’s now 10, and I don’t think I can live life this way any longer. The only light in my life is my son, (and our dog). My parents know how miserable I am, as I confided in them recently. They said I should leave if I am that unhappy. They said I could go there, and bring the dog. My son asked me the other day, why I am always sad. It broke my heart. Life is too short to be miserable, and you owe it to your son to be the best Dad you can be. It is possible to be a good parent, and separate from your partner. Marriages break down all the time. Not sleeping together for six years is not normal. That’s not a happy marriage, it’s just a living arrangement. Have a good talk to your wife. You might find she isn’t entirely happy either.

Write to Sara in confidence. A pseudonym will be used if you wish. Sara reads all letters and can give a personal reply. Email your question to agonyaunt@roundtownnews.com or Sara is available for private consultations, telephone 650 054 467.

He called it off MY BOYFRIEND called off our wedding and ended our relationship, two months before the big day. He is Asian, and I am not, so his parents have never been keen on me. In the beginning he used to stand up for us, and defy them, and say that he would stay with me and they’d better get used to the idea. They threatened to cut him off totally, to never see him again, and exclude him from their Will. It looks like they got to him in the end. I am utterly heartbroken. How do I get over this? Having the disapproval of your parents can be a giant problem for most people, and it would take a very strong and determined couple to endure it. Your boyfriend was weak and gave in to his parents demands, and it is better to find out now, than have to go through an unhappy marriage and divorce later. Try and surround yourself with your friends, and go out and enjoy yourself. It will take time, but you will get over it.

 There is an open door to new experiences and change this week. Though it is very much up to you right now, any chance to channel your energies into something more positive would be most welcome. Mars brushes up to mighty planet Uranus and this brings invention, ingenuity and endeavour together with a focus on a new positive direction. As Saturn ingresses Neptune and Mercury takes a square on Jupiter there are some mixed blessings, and maybe something that will lead to becoming a blessing in disguise. You have been channelling your energy into something that just isn’t going anywhere. Take your talents and fly solo, because it is time to step up and take control by yourself. Mercury opposes Saturn and squares on Jupiter this week bringing a wealth of opportunity to the fore. Whilst Jupiter schedules luck and fortune it is a reactionary Saturn that ensures that whatever you decide to do that you have your feet firmly on the ground. This reality check does much to ensure that what you about to get is just what you want! The entry of the Sun midweek heralds an illumination of your subtle hard working talents, and it shines all the way to new methods of sharing your power. You have been badly let down by someone who cannot be happy for you, and is determined to have their way. This week is all about telling someone to eat a very humble pie! The Sun enters into Cancer, and it is high time to take a fresh look at something shelved. Apart from clearing much from your life to make things flow more easily; there is also a need to attack clutter from your life, which you have accumulated and need to focus on if the future is going to bring you the richer dividends you both need and deserve. Mercury squares up to Jupiter and heralds the start of a busy week in which you will have your work cut out, but which will work very much for you too. People need to know your true talents, and this week, as chaos ensues, you begin to find a way of letting others know that you are not to be messed with and that you have specific ideas for the future.

Have the temerity to back your words with appropriate action this week. What you have to say needs to be heard, although you may have been wrongly pre-judged. Actions between Mars and Ceres call time on something that seems to be dragging you down, but really it is the evasive action that you now take that will seal the deal for all.

Mars in ensconced in Kora, and the basic rhythm of life is good and stable. Be very sure to say an emphatic, “ no”, however, to someone who you feel, quite rightly, has an ulterior motive for their request. Put your time and trouble into working on something that all can enjoy, it is what you love to do, and simply just what you do best too!

KENNY, I am having problems sleeping worrying about the forthcoming possibility of a Brexit and what it means to me an English widow living here in Spain. Carol (SMS)

Saturn beguiles Mercury, who in return salutes Neptune in the fifth house. There is more than meets the eye in a recent action, and you seem to be the best person to sort things out. Start by opening your psychic senses and leave no stone unturned until you can back your intuition with facts. Nothing is what it appears to be right now, and you know it!

Carol...whatever happens nothing very much will change for Expats living here in Spain. Other nationalities from outside the EU. manage to live here without fear or incrimination. Whatever the result, and I think it will be very close, the UK. will have liaison with the Spanish Authorities and a deal will be struck. Our homes will not be taken from us if we become non EU. citizens and maybe we will have to have a new registration as Aliens rather than European Citizens. We will do what we have to...so mentally unpack those bags and wait and see; take any fear away meanwhile, it won’t help.

Uranus dallies with Mars adding to the recent equation which has seen you finding a suitable foothold. However it is not the be all or end all of what you really have to do to showcase your absolute talents. If there is a fly in the ointment right now, it got there because it could, and you have now to be clear and transparent about everything. Mercury squares up to your planetary leader, Neptune with one eye on a discreet move over to a reactionary and static Saturn, planet of wisdom. You are full of the spiritual energy that you need to get a job done...but then you have to do it, since talking about it is not enough right now. You will get all the Universal backing you need.

TAKE TIME to examine the possibilities recent actions have brought you. It will help to see things from a different angle and you need this right now. Challenge comes from several directions, and here you do not have to prove yourself, but put in motion that which you have to to get the ball rolling!

Jupiter squares on Mercury and it is time to let the cat out of the bag. Though you were sworn to secrecy the ban has been lifted now, and you are free to tell your tale the way that it is. Channels of communication are readily open now to make sure that your message is sent out loud and clear, however it does not take into account any closed ears.

If It’s Your Birthday This Week

Choir on song By Jack Troughton

VALLEY VOICES ended its season with a successful concert in Alcalali, the choir performing stirring excerpts from West End musical Les Miserables as a finale. At the Multi Uso hall, Valley voices were directed by Aileen Lightfoot and accompanied on piano by Kirsty Glen; with guitarist John Anthony playing a selection of popular film themes. And a collection held at the end of the show raised 200€ which will be donated to local charity Caritas to buy food and distributed to the needy. Valley Voices is a happy choir and a place to meet and make new friends – it will return to rehearse at Bar L’Assut in Jalon in September. Anyone interested in joining should contact Jennie on 96 558 1519 or Aileen on 696 514 613.

Dance under the stars

ANIMAL CHARITY APASA is staging its popular Summer Ball on Friday 8th July in the beautiful gardens of the Salon Canor in Teulada. Last year 90 guests enjoyed the charity’s most popular event on the calendar and it is hoped even more people will want to enjoy the cava reception, a four-course dinner with wine, and music and dancing under the stars to The OK Band. This year the organisers hope guests will be inspired to wear clothes with the colour theme of purple and white. Tickets are 35€; booking is essential, call 96 574 1668 or 639 603 880.

‘Harrods’ needs staff THE ORIGINAL Charity Shop in Javea needs volunteers to join its international team to help fund raising for good causes across the Costa Blanca. The successful enterprise – proud of its reputation as the ‘Harrods of Javea’ – needs more staff to help carry out the many tasks involved in this successful enterprise which donates between 40,000€ and 60,000€ every year. And anyone with a few hours to spare who would like to join a friendly team can go and visit the shop in Javea’s Avenida Fontana between 10am and 1pm Monday to Friday. Alec’s river shoot PHOTOGRAPHER ALEC Bettney’s hunt for turtles along the Rio Albaida drew a blank but he snapped some “great shots” of the water as it fl owed towards theRio Jugar near Villanueva de Castellon. by JACK TROUGHTON A LARGE fish was photographed in a fastflowing section of the river as it narrows before a lagoon – a popular spot with anglers – and before the water slows near the town of Manuel and a manmade weir next to an old bridge. Alec also took a shot of a 1.2 metre snake, saying “it was no small guy” – and posting a video on You Tube as ‘wild snake Valencia Alec B’. He explained the Rio Albaida was 52 km long and started as a stream high up somewhere near the mountain village of Fontanares before winding its way to the Reservoir at Bellus. “It’s thanks to this reservoir that the river gets a top-up and so remains with water all year. My neighbour told me before the reservoir came into being that the river dried out in the summer months,” said Alec. “It finds its way to the side of sleepy village of Torre de Lloris and onwards to Xativa and finally joins the Rio Jugar. The river is very clean and supports some large fish and plenty of other wildlife including small turtles. “However the turtles were not seen on our shoot day. The river for most part is well lined each side with cane and this can catch fire in the heat of July and August.” Alec is a professional photographer and accepts commissions. Feng Shui and Geobiology Our Study Can Let you Live in a Healthy Home For Life.

Our work can help eliminate a large amount of health problems, (sometimes very serious) that have been caused by pollutions and bad energy in our home/work environment. It has been our experience that every property in Spain is in need of our service, literally every home has it’s problems that could have very real effects on our health and mood.

We guarantee a personalized study carried out by a true professional: -We will find the origin of any pollution problems in the property and mark on the ground the harmful (geopatogenous) points -We then use a test of Kinesiology to check the harmfulness of the essential points (we are the only ones to do this in Spain) -We then place our remedies, which are known as Geophases, in certain points around the property. These remedies carry a lifetime guarantee to keep on functioning, literally giving you a healthy home for ever. -We then carry out a new test of kinesiology which should verify that all the harmfulness has disappeared.

-The Geophases will also control the harmful influences caused by electromagnetic pollution, such as that from electrical goods, tv , wifi, etc. -We can also control via a specialized device the pollution caused by mobile telephony masts near your home -Finally, we will give you advice on Feng Shui and seek out other possible pollution caused by waves of noxious forms We are the only ones that can offer such a comprehensive study and execution. I can tell you from personal experience the profound positive effects this service can have on your health and success. Call Marcel Gysens Tel: 966431700/mobile 692097733 Gandia to Benidorm.

Happy birthday THE ROYAL Society of St George celebrated the official 90th birthday of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on Saturday at La Galera Restaurant, Javea. Chairman Bob Hunt MBE welcomed 82 society members and their guests to the lunch, especially groups from the RAF Association, the Aircrew Association, Rotarians and the Costa Blanca Wine Appreciation Society. Bob reminded everyone of the “tremendous service” to the British nation and the Commonwealth given by the Queen over her reign. And at the end of the speech, there was a rousing chorus of ‘Happy Birthday’ before a toast the Queen’s past and future service to her peoples around the world.

Created, written, and directed by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, Gervais was kind enough to share a seriously scathing comment made by radio and television producer Victor Lewis-Smith that he found when searching the archives, and it’s not for the faint hearted. “How this dross ever got beyond the pilot stage is a mystery,” LewisSmith began “Ricky Gervais is neither an actor nor a dramatic writer, and the rest of the cast were equally underwhelming, conveying not simply the roles of dull office workers, but of actors who were bored with their characters.” You need to get out a bit more Victor.

GOD FORBID the headline for this story comes true, as it reads ´England has a Kardashian family.´ Jack Watkins is a 17 year old rich kid from Cheshire who is soon to feature in a TV series called ´The Majors,´ although on what channel and when was not stated. We´ll have the unabashed joy of spending 24 hours with a wealthy whelk from various countries, starting from the moment they wake up, till the moment they go to bed, filming every single aspect of their life: restaurants, clothes, friends, cars, sport, shopping, going to party etc. discovering their goals and aspirations, their dreams, their attitude and their world- view. Is there are no depths these reality show makers won’t stoop to. Pass me the sedatives!

IT’S FAIRLY rare to find out about a famous persons true financial situation, and when it does one of the first questions is ´what did they do with all that money,´ and the fact that David Hasselhoff is todays subject, you might be running that question through your mind yourself. ´Knight Rider´ and ´Baywatch´ were two huge shows, but sadly for David, last week he admitted to only having $4,000 in cash to his name, bad news for ex-wife Pamela, who should be receiving $252,000 a year in spousal support from their 17 year marriage. David says that he’s hoping new reality show ´Hoff the Record´ will help revitalize his career, but isn’t sure if it will improve his bank account. With a title like that bud I think your right!

Do all you can to watch ´Janis: Little Girl Blue´ AS WITH when Janis Joplin was alive, a documentary about her life went out on BBC 4 in March this year, and chances are, like me, you missed it. Fortunately thanks to our modern world of technology I have now seen the film, and I would advise you all to do the same, as it’s a tale of music and celebrity from an era that is unlikely to ever come round again. She was born in Port Arthur, Texas, on January 19, 1943, and her first song recording was at the home of a fellow University of Texas student in December 1962 and was called ´What Good Can Drinkin’ Do,´ something she unfortunately was unable to apply to her own life. She stumbled along in and out of music for next 5 years, then in 1967 during an appearance at Monterey Pop Festival the name of Janis Joplin became commonplace. There were virtually no female singers around at the time, so it was quite something for the interest in her to take off like it did. Amy Berg the director of the film ´Janis: Little Girl Blue´ explained “her big-voiced, bluesy style dominated the stage, forging her own path and paving the way for female singers to come … it was a very male-dominated industry at the time.” Janis appeared at Woodstock two years later, and from which we are treated to a previously unseen version of her biggest hit, “Me and Bobby McGee.” Berg builds the movie around letters Janis wrote to her parents back home in Texas, chronicling her quest to find both musical success and love. “If you watch Janis onstage you see this woman who just seems fearless, and then you read these letters and it’s such a different persona,” said Berg. Talking about her ´fitting in´ at Thomas Jefferson High School Janis was quoted as saying, “I was a misfit, I read, I painted, I thought, and I didn’t hate black people.” The subtext suggests there’s a strong connection between Joplin and Amy Berg after the director admitted “At certain points in my life when I was going through something great or something awful, I found myself going back to her music, it was like a healing thing for me. I was so hard on myself when editing because I just wanted to make her proud. Gets you right there doesn´t it!

MANY FAMOUS celebs have taken to the trend of sharing selfies of themselves without makeup, and Alicia Keys, US singer and actress has taken the trend of showing their imperfect selves to the world one step further. The singer, whose smiling, makeup-free face appears regularly on her husband´s Instagram, reflects on what it means for a woman to come to terms with the pressure to look the way our culture expects us to look. “I wrote a list of all the things that I was sick of, “said Alicia “feeling like I have to be skinny, or sexy, or desirable, or perfect, and one of the many things I was really tired of was the constant judgment of women,” strong but worthy words indeed. Bring it on ladies … and gents!

LAST OCTOBER Ladybird produced three books for adults called The Ladybird Book of the Hipster, TLB of the Hangover, TLB of the Mid-life Crisis, and they sold extremely well, and now Enid Blyton´s Famous Five are getting a similar make-over. The new series is written by Bruno Vincent and bring the Famous Five into modern day, with titles such as Five Go Gluten Free, Five Go On A Strategy Away Day, and Five Go Parenting. It’s kind of hallowed ground for me personally as I recall being mesmerised by the Famous Five books as a lad, and with the publishers using the same artwork style as the originals they´d better be good! All three books will be available on 3rd November. Will they be worthy chrissie prezzies?

Heroes’ Arctic adventure by Jack Troughton

DOCTOR WHO writer Victor Pemberton undertakes a 10,000km adventure next month hoping his epic drive to the Arctic and back will raise a Tardis-full of cash for charity Help for Heroes. The big-hearted author, actor, and script editor, created two complete Doctor Who series; one for “great friend”, the late Patrick Troughton and a second for Tom Baker in the lead role – and invented an essential piece of kit for the endearing hero...the sonic screwdriver. And now something of a Time Lord himself, Victor says he is doing “a mad thing for my age” by driving from his Orba home to Bodo in Norway, about 100 miles into the Arctic Circle; and back. Film of his epic trip will be uploaded with commentary and available via You Tube, Facebook, Dr Who websites – there is a massive following – and the charity, which helps wounded ex-servicemen and women. Help for Heroes has thrown its weight behind the adventure, Victor’s BBC friends hope to secure a ‘One Show’ interview, and Prince Harry – no stranger to helping former military comrades – is said to be taking an interest. “I want to make as much money as I can,” Victor told RTN. “Help for Heroes is absolutely over the moon; the board wrote me a wonderful letter saying I am an inspiration to them all – I find that very encouraging. “I don’t mind where the money comes from; from whom or what, as long as I make money for the charity.”

Friends have promised a traditional red, white and blue sendoff for Victor as he leaves in his trusty VW on Thursday 28th July. He hopes to be back at home with his dogs Bubble and Squeak – who are staying with friends – a month later. “Help for Heroes is a cause very close to my heart. Father was in World War One, he was a machine gunner at the Battle of the Somme. A shell landed behind his platoon and killed everyone except him, but he lost a leg,” said Victor.

“There was no Help for heroes in those days and he got nothing. In a way, I am doing this trip as a tribute to him. At the start it was just a trip but I thought that was a waste and I really hope to benefit all the guys and girls of Help for Heroes...they deserve it.” People can support Victor by making a donation at his Help for Heroes page www.justgiving.com/thearcticadventure2016 or using the unique text code VPAA53.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Yours Untranslatably Apparently a lot of people read these articles. I am frequently being told by people how helpful they are, and last week I met a gentleman in Denia who brought every single one of the 125 articles that he had carefully cut out from the paper, to show me! Occasionally people e-mail me with comments and corrections and last week I was picked up on missing the accent off the word “antídoto”. I would like to blame this small slip on my annoyingly bossy computer which unsurprisingly gets rather confused about which language I am writing in. However, I must take overall responsibility, and therefore will now metaphorically fall on my sword. I would now like you to re-read the passage above, and underline the adverbs. In case you haven’t got a pen on you at the moment, here they are: apparently, frequently, carefully, occasionally, annoyingly, unsurprisingly, metaphorically. Those faithful followers I have already mentioned will no doubt remember that we have already “done” adverbs, in article 70 in fact, but just recently I’ve been noticing some more things about them. What article 70 told us was that “adverbs of manner” are formed by adding “mente” on to the ends of adjectives. They are the equivalent of when we add “ly” on to adjectives in English, as in nice – nicely. In Spanish

if the adjective ends in the letter “o”, this changes to “a”, otherwise there are no changes, so we have for example: “últimamente” (from último) and “recientemente” (from reciente). Both adverbs mean the same thing incidentally – lately, or recently. In theory, we should be able to translate the English adverbs above directly into Spanish. Let’s see if it works – aparentemente, frecuentemente, cuidadosamente, ocasionalmente, (“annoyingly” doesn’t work, neither does “unsurprisingly”) metafóricamente. As you can see we have been able to do this with all adverbs but two, which simply don’t exist in Spanish. However, even those we have translated are not found all that commonly (commonly – there’s another one). The fact is that these kind of adverbs are extremely (got it? – extremely) common in English but not nearly (another one) so frequent in Spanish. It is far more usual for the Spanish to find other ways of saying the same thing. For example, a common equivalent of “apparently” is “por lo visto”; “frequently” becomes “con frecuencia”; “carefully” – “con cuidado”; “occasionally” – “de vez en cuando”; “annoyingly” and “unsurprisingly” would probably (another one) require a complete rephrasing of the sentence, whilst “metafóricamente” does appear in written Spanish, but does not exactly (another one) trip off the tongue otherwise.

There is an increasing tendency in the English language to start sentences with adverbs, in a way that many purists find unacceptable. Some examples of this are: “Hopefully”, “Obviously”, “Incredibly”, “Incidentally”, “Interestingly”, “Reluctantly” “Curiously”. Yes, we English just love our adverbs, but they create quite a challenge to translators into Spanish. I don’t think there has ever been a Spanish sentence starting “Interesantemente …” unless it has been badly translated from English. Feel free to prove me wrong. Reluctantly, I have come to the end of this article. Hopefully you have found it of interest, and obviously I will be back with more next week. Yours untranslatably.

Double Trouble LURKING around Heathrow Airport a few years ago a chap came up to me & asked for my autograph. Odd I mused, I’m not famous.

by

Chris Ashley

Writer & Broadcaster

Proof if proof were needed, at a radio awards shindig at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London attended by such luminaries as Rod & Penny Stewart along with Elton & the ever faithful Furnish - the paparazzi were going bonkers. “Elton love over here - Rod give us a wave - Penny give us a flash.” As I traipsed in, one of the ‘clicking clodhoppers’ bellowed “Relax, it’s nobody.” If they had just inserted the vowel ‘a’ it would have softened the blow, as then, I would have been one of a million nobodies – not this completely friendless nonentity among the glitterati. Therefore being asked to sign a scrap of paper by a total stranger was extremely weird. “Who do you think I am?” I asked. “Come on Dave, don’t be standoffish.” Dave! Dave? It felt like a conversation between Rodney & Trigger in Only Fools & Horses. “Look chum you’re confusing me with someone else, my name is Christopher Aloysius” “Oh! Gone all hoity toity have we Dave – or should that be La- Di- Da Lord Vine?” Then it dawned, he mistook me for David Vine from ‘It’s A Knockout’ – morbidly this happened 3 months after he died (didn’t realise I looked that knackered). During the 60’s occasionally folks would say I was a dead ringer for Jonathan King, which I revelled in until the waste product hit the rudimentary air conditioning unit for John boy – I stopped wearing hornrimmed specs too. Some well known stars start to look like someone else as they age. Mick Hucknall is turning into a Charlie Drake doppelgänger. By the end of this decade Robbie Williams will look like Norman Wisdom, mark my words. Eric Clapton looks like my old maths teacher (you’ll have to take my word, unless of course you went to The Norman Bates C of E Secondary in Woebegone Worthing & had numeracy beaten into you by Mr. Grimethorpe). Hardly a day passes that I don’t peruse my 1950’s logarithm tables – thanks Grimy – they’re a true boon. Now you dear reader – devilishly handsome / beguilingly beautiful – or like the south end of a north bound bus? Who do you resemble & has it got you into compromising scrapes. We need to know. THE COLOUR of your urine could be giving you an ‘early warning’ that you are seriously ill. Most people’s urine varies widely in colour depending on the time of day, early morning urine being much darker than that produced later in the day. There are some signs in your urine that you shouldn’t ignore even if it only means drinking more water. If you are dehydrated you need to drink plenty of fluids such as water, diluted squash or fruit juice. These are far more effective than large amounts of tea or coffee. Fizzy drinks can be full of sugar and will be harder to drink in large volume.

Dark brown urine

Dark brown urine can be a sign of severe dehydration or early liver disease. If your urine is dark brown you need to drink lots of water and check the colour of your urine to see if it changes. If it remains dark brown then you need to contact a doctor.

This is usually nothing to worry about and is caused by drinking too much especially when taking part in sport. In rare cases you can drink so much that the body can’t get rid of the fluid. This is rare and if you only drink when you are thirsty and not because you think you should then it should not occur.

Bright yellow urine

This can be alarming but is usually caused by vitamin supplements and the body getting rid of nutrients it can’t absorb and is therefore nothing to worry about.

Cloudy urine

Cloudy urine for a man can be caused by recently having sex or for both sexes by eating foods such as cheese. If it persists it could be due to a bacterial infection which may need to be treated with antibiotics.

Bright orange urine

This can be a side-effect of eating foods such as beetroot but could be due to something more sinister. A very small amount of blood will make the urine pinkish. This could be caused by high-impact sports having an effect on the bladder but it could be a sign of a more serious illness such as kidney stones, or even cancer. If it persists contact a doctor.

This is often caused by dehydration and is common first thing in the morning as the kidneys have continued working overnight without urinating. It can also be a sign that you are eating too many salty foods which causes the body to retain water. Try eating less salty foods and drinking more water. If it persists then consult your doctor as it could be a sign of jaundice.

Life saving success ‘HOW TO Save a Life’ courses in the Marina Alta have proved a “resounding success” as qualified paramedics demonstrated how to use CPR.

Organised by Sandy Tsalikidis with Javea Red Cross for the English-speaking community, people paid 20€ to attend and the proceeds will go towards the Javea Ambulance Appeal – the town urgently needs three new vehicles. The courses were run by Debbie Glover and her husband, both trained paramedics, who offered their time free to improve safety in the community where they now live. And their training has inspired many people to have the confidence to ‘save a life’ - and the success of the course means more training will be offered. One student said afterwards: “It’s the best 20€ I’ve ever spent. I now have the confidence to intervene if someone needs help and many others have signed up for the future courses.” For further information contact Sandy 626 681 720 or Lorena at Red Cross Javea on 96 579 1961. La Vila finish their season with a flourish by TONY FOX By finishing third in the Spanish National Rugby Sevens tournament at the National Stadium in Madrid La Vila ended their season on a happy note. The only team that they lost to were the eventual winners. Reflecting on a season where fortunes changed on a technicality, Club President Jason Craig is confident that in keeping together this years team that won the league and their semi final play-off games (only to be disqualified on protest from CAU Valencia) we can look forward to next season with high hopes. CAU were trounced 129-25 0n aggregate by Bizkarla Gernika, a bottom first division team, so ending their quest for a first division place. If La Vila are to successfully defend their league title and achieve promotion, the on the field performance must be matched by a sound financial platform which will mean new sponsorship deals and ‘bums on seats’ at all their home matches. This in a country where the round ball rules over the oval and is no mean task. You can show your support for La Vila by attending their end of season BBQ at the Vila Joyosa ground (take exit 66 from the motorway) when club trophies for best player etc. will be presented. The cost for the sit-down meal is just 10 euros per person to include an aperitif and two drinks. You can book on-line at officina@rugbylavila.net or by phoning Ignacio DaVila on 608 068 208

Only two weeks to our Captains day should be a great day with lots of fun,Details off our society are on our facebook page or phone Pete Gardiner on 699832394

Pego golf society The good news from Oliva Nova Golf Course, is that the course is now back to it’s best, with the greens now becoming slick and true, and the remaining part of the golf course wet from heavy watering. We had a rather low turnout today of only 36 members and guests, and the guests were Jock Anderson, Richard Morris, Richard Vaas and Brian O’Connor. All were welcomed warmly by our Captain David O’Connor. We went round today in three hours and fifty minutes, which was a change from the tedious rounds of between five and six hours in April and May. The competition today was a “Texas Scramble Team Competition” and with the course and the greens returned to their normal pristine condition, the scene was set for an exciting tournament In the main part of the competition, the results were as follows Texas Scramble Results 1st Place with 58.9 net score was the team of Brendan Young, Brian O’Connor, Richard Morris and Tony Jerman 2nd Place with 63.0 net score was the team of Martin Gates, Paul Singh, Barry Levett and Mario Van Kessel 3rd Place with 63.6 was the team of Donna Green, Linda Davies, Terry Oram and Trevor Baker

There were only two 2’s today, and they were by Robert Jenkins and Brian O’Connor. Brian O’Connor, who was a guest player today is a Plus 1 player from United Kingdom, and this class showed in the Texas Scramble, as his team won the competition at a canter. The “Balls in the Water” prize numbered 80 balls in the water and that was not won so it will be carried forward until next week. Nearest the hole at Hole 6 with their tee shot was Brian Barden with 3.94 meters, and at hole 16, the closest was Terry Oram with 1 meter, but shame about the putt Terry.

There were two match-play games played today and they were as follows:Dave Collins beat Paul Trigwell by 4/3 and Patrick Lynch defeated our Captain David O’Connor by 5/4 If any member or guest would like to play with the Pego Golf Society, and who wouldn’t, as we are playing a “Singles Stableford Handicap Competition” please contact our secretary and send an e-mail to Penny Barden at pegohandicapsec@gmail.com or enter through our website www.pegogolfsociety.com. Teams play for the RTN Cup by Caroline Tyszka THERE IS just one week until the Chorltonians football team hit the Costa Blanca for their annual tour of friendly games concluding with a tournament against local teams for the RTN Trophy. The Chorltonians have been touring the world for over 40 years and until recently visited a different country each time – that was until four years ago when they came to Benidorm and local expat Ken Scott, author, ghost writer, huge football fan and coach organised the teams Spanish tour - they have been returning ever since. Phil Singleton, manager for the Chorltonians told RTN, “we enjoyed visiting different parts of the world on our annual football tour but just ran out of places to go.” “Sometimes the organisation and language barrier left a lot to be desired,” he said, “then we met Ken and he took care of everything, organising friendlies and a tournament at the end of the week. We enjoyed the experience so much that we kept coming back, this being our fourth year and boys love it.” The tournament will be held on the 26th June in Albir featuring the Orange All Stars team from Albir and Premier Imports from Benidorm. There will be a special award presentation barbeque being at El Portet in Altea. Last year’s winners were the Orange Allstars. Who will win the RTN cup this year?

Feel at home in the SX4 S-Cross FIRST IMPRESSIONS matter. In business it is that care and attention to appearance, dress and general conduct that makes a lasting impression.

The same can be applied to vehicles and that’s where Suzuki scores highly. From that first moment of opening the door and sitting in the driver’s seat I feel at home in the SX4 S-Cross. Bear in mind that I drive a lot of cars and yet Suzukis always stands out because they are all comfortable. I test the Suzuki during the worst weather for 100 years. At one point over 100,000 homes are without power and some unfortunate residents in Somerset have been without power since Christmas. Flooding is encountered on almost every route but my Japanese friend with its

raised ride height is ideal in such situations. High winds and water logged roads ensure that it is nigh on impossible to exceed 60mph. Those gusting high winds do buffet the Suzuki but it feels confident enough. It is quite sluggish though especially on start-up and so it is pleasing to find that it is equipped with a sport mode that livens things up. In fact it remains on this mode for most of the test because I find it gives it the ‘oomph’ that I require. Interestingly it doesn’t affect fuel economy that much either with the vehicle still returning over 40mpg, which I’m quite impressed with considering it’s a 1.6-litre petrol. When conditions become too slippery it is easy to turn the centre mounted dial to ‘snow and mud’ mode, which is also extremely useful during the test. Some of the routes that I am most familiar with have been closed due to the floods and workmen try hard to remedy the situation. All this talk of climate change being the problem - Queen Victoria reported similar circumstances in her diary many years ago. Whatever the reason, you’re grateful to be driving the SX4 S-Cross. The raised ride height, the permanent 4WD and the powerful windscreen wipers and washers make driving in these challenging conditions enjoyable rather than a chore. My two girls in the back quickly fall asleep and my wife Caroline finds her heated front seat comfortable. “I like the lemon fragrance to the windscreen wash,” she says, adding that sometimes it can be very overpowering requiring the windows to be wound down. The large glass panoramic roof makes the cabin feel light and airy and on just one of the days of the test the sun actually appears bringing the glass roof really into its own. I like the fact that the front part also has a tilting sunroof function. New price: 18,117€ to 28,444€ 0-60mph: 12secs Top speed: 108mph Economy: 40mpg Watch the video at www.testdrives.biz
