A word from JT A week’s a long time in politics and the Brexit saga continues to dominate the news since someone did the maths and announced the result seven days ago. The tremors are still being felt in the corridors of power in London and across Europe. David Cameron immediately announced his resignation after team ‘remain’ lost the vote, besieged Jeremy Corbyn faces a Labour leadership battle, and only yesterday the Conservative’s new golden boy Boris Johnson ruled himself out of the race to be the new Tory Number One. And in the EU, things are not crystal cut either. Mr Cameron and UKIP´s Nigel Farage have had a little spat in Brussels with the “I told you so” line over migration worries and there is mounting concern about the future of the whole institution. Voices grow ever louder from other countries wanting their own vote, faster reforms, and simpler trade deals without the bureaucracy. There is also a worrying trend in the growth of the extreme right and out and out racism.

Sign the register FOREIGN RESIDENTS of a Marina Alta town are being urged to check they are still registered on the ‘padron’, the important and official ‘head count’ of a community’s population. by Jack Troughton Numbers on the padron govern the size of the grant awarded to a local authority by central government in Spain and it further controls the public amenities – such as schools, medical centres, and doctors – enjoyed by a town. Joining the civic register has no tax implications. However, in Calpe, it is feared number of expats have “slipped off” the register in recent years and the town hall is appealing for people to check they are still listed. Councillor Carole Saunders said: “We are asking all foreign residents if they would not mind coming into the town hall and checking they are still on the register. “We are looking for everyone’s cooperation in this check – Europeans should renew their registration every two years and people from outside the EU every two years.” The council offices are open from 8am until 5pm Monday to Thursday, 8am to 2pm on Friday, and 10am until 1pm on Saturday.

New bus route quiet

THE NEW direct bus link from Benidorm to Alicante train station began this week but few travellers seemed to be aware of the service. Six Alsa buses made the trip from Alicante to the resort but it is reported that they hardly carried any passengers - operators believe passenger numbers will increase as the service becomes better known.

Keep passports safe BRITISH HOLIDAYMAKERS and residents are being urged to keep passports safe this summer as thefts of the vital travel document soar this year. by Jack Troughton

The British Consulate in Alicante has warned that most – almost 70% - are stolen in towns and cities. And the number of British people needing an Emergency Travel Document (EDT) is up 11% so far this year; the consulate has already issued around 500. People needing to be issued with an EDT find the process expensive and time consuming. They cost £100 and could take two hours to prepare – plus the time needed to travel to and from the consulate. The single-use documents will get people home, but they will then need to spend more time and money applying for a new passport. It can leave a bad and lasting after-

taste to any trip. Consulate research reveals two-thirds of stolen passports are taken in town or city centres; and as tourist numbers rise for the summer, passport theft often soars – as this year’s figures are already demonstrating. Consul Sarah-Jane Morris said: “It’s frustrating to have your holiday ruined through a lost or stolen passport – and costly as well. It should only take a little vigilance and care to keep it away from thieves. “Think about where you keep your passport – is it secure, or could it be grabbed? If you are carrying your passport, keep it in a zipped pocket or money belt under your clothes.”

New routes from Alicante

NEW routes began operating out of the Alicante airport this week with two direct routes added to the increasing number of destinations that passengers can now access directly.

Travellers will now be able to fly to London City Airport with BA CityFlyer, part of the British Airways company, four days of the week. Another new route from Alicante will be provided by Airles, flying travellers to the IvanoFrankivsk airport in the Ukraine. This will operate twice a week. The London City route now brings the total of airports in the UK directly accessible from Alicante to twenty five.

MESSAGE “This message of tranquillity extends to our businesses and to the thousands of people from Valencia who for work and study reasons are in the UK. “The Valencia Community has been, is, and will be a welcoming land – a land that wants to do business for the benefit of all. Europe has to change, adapt and combine all identities and sensibilities.” German leader Angela Merkel predicts a “difficult divorce” and is pressing for a speedy settlement but back in the UK George Osborne said only the UK could trigger Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty and her exit – he said the country would face the future from “a position of strength” and it was “perfectly sensible” to wait for a new leader. THE EU has suddenly accepted the need for reform – since the referendum result was announced, political commentators have predicted its collapse without change. One Spanish paper’s front page said the leave decision provoked “an earthquake without precedent” and predicted “blood, sweat and tears”. Key elections are being held across Europe next year and politicians are already preparing the ground for referenda in EU member states – leading voices in France predict a “Frexit”. An electronic petition in the UK calls for a second referendum – all expats can sign it – and by yesterday morning it had over 4 million signatures. It calls for the government to implement a rule that if vote for leave or remain was less than 60% based on a turnout of fewer than 75% of the electorate; there should be a second ballot.

This year’s event is at 8 pm - doors open at 7 pm - at the club on the Avenida d. Filipinas, Benidorm, and it is hoped for another sell out. Organisers said: “Come to our Benidorm Charity Karaoke Night! A crazy night of songs from your best-loved Benidorm actors live and unrehearsed! Anything could happen and probably will!” Tickets were available in advance from the reception of Hotel El Presidente until tonight (Friday) or until they sold out. There will be very limited numbers of tickets available on the door. Two lucky holidaymakers, Andrea and Phil from Sheffield, were delighted to get their tickets. Artisan fair in Altea

THE 33rd edition of the traditional fair ‘Mostra de Artesania opens this weekend in Altea in the church square of the old town area and runs from July 2nd until September 4th. Visitors will be able to take part in planned workshops and listen to live music as well as purchase the handmade crafts on offer. The fair is open between 7.30pm and 12.30am and is made up of twenty one stalls showing items made from such materials as metal, glass, wood, paper, ceramics. Blue Zones reactivated Drivers parking in a blue zone in Benidorm from today, 1st July, must again buy a ticket or risk being towed away. During the winter months many of the blue spaces have been free, but now summer has arrived tow trucks will be touring the town looking for vehicles without a valid ticket.

A STUNNING full moon rose over the mountains of Valencia last week, coinciding with the Summer Solstice.

The lunar event was captured by photographer Alec Bettney from his home near Xativa – he said it was the first time a full moon had appeared at the same as the solstice since 1967.

Terrorists attack Turkey by Caroline Tyszka SHOCKING IMAGES have emerged of the terror attack at Ataturk airport in Turkey on Tuesday killing at least 41 people. Three suicide bombers caused carnage, injuring another 239 – with warnings the death toll was likely to rise. And early signs suggest so-called Islamic State was behind the attack. The attackers began shooting inside the terminal before blowing themselves up. Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Turkish President, said the attack should serve as a turning point in the global fight against militant groups. “The bombs that exploded in Istanbul today could have gone off at any airport in any city around the world.” CCTV film shows one of the attackers running inside the terminal as people around him flee. He is then shot by police and stays on the ground for about 20 seconds before activating his suicide belt. ONE TRAVELLER, Paul Roos, who was

due to fly home to South Africa, told reporters he saw one of the attackers. “He was wearing all black. His face was not masked. We ducked behind a counter but I stood up and watched him. Two explosions went off shortly after one another. By that time he had stopped shooting. “He turned around and started coming towards us. He was holding his gun inside his jacket. He looked around anxiously to see if anyone was going to stop him and then went down the escalator. We heard some more gunfire and then another explosion, and then it was over.” The attackers were trying to pass through X-ray machines but were stopped by security officials - and as they began shooting with AK-47 rifles, officers returned fire. Islamic State had called for attacks during the holy month of Ramadan, and has focused its attention on Turkey, currently bidding to join the European Union. Turkey has suffered a number of bombings this year, including two suicide attacks in tourist areas of Istanbul and two car bombings in the capital, Ankara.

Agadoo singer jailed by Caroline Tyszka THE SHAMED ‘Agadoo’ singer, Dene Michael was sentenced to six months jail at a Leeds court this week for benefit fraud. The Black Lace frontman, full name Dene Michael Betteridge and his wife Karen, pleaded guilty earlier this month to claiming over £25,000 in disability benefits and other allowances, despite the singer still performing. The Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) said Betteridge and his wife admitted the offences at a previous hearing at Leeds Magistrates’ Court, having claimed £11,579.66 in Disability Living Allowance and Employment and Support Allowance and £13,667 in Council Tax and Housing Benefit.

Investigators discovered that while the singer maintaining he could not leave his house without the assistance of walking sticks or an electric scooter; he was openly performing without such aids. Probation officer Malcolm Brown described Betteridge’s offending as “naive” as it was inevitable that he would eventually have been caught. He acknowledged that Betteridge did have a number of health problems but they were not as severe as he had made out when claiming benefits. Karen Betteridge falsely claimed benefits as the singer’s carer and was sentenced to a 12 month community order, which includes 100 hours community work. The couple has already repaid some of the money and Peter Byrne, for Betteridge, said: “He is deeply ashamed of his conduct.” Betteridge met his wife Karen whilst he was performing on the Benidorm circuit.

Remembering the Somme ONE HUNDRED years ago, on 1st July 1916, one of the bloodiest battles of the Great War began – on the first day of the Battle of the Somme the British Army lost 58,000 men, with 19,000 killed. by Jack Troughton It will remain one of the most deadly battles of the First World War. With the French and British Armies calling upon troops from their colonies, units from 25 nations and 50 countries were involved. And during five months of combat, the total number of men killed, wounded and missing reached over one million. British casualties were 420.000 for the British, 190,000 for the French and 420,000 for the Germans. The landscape of the north-east of the Somme was completely devastated, villages were razed to the ground and fields turned into lunar-landscapes by the shelling. The battle was launched on 1st July 1916 following a seven day artillery preparatory bombardment, the scale of which had never been seen in modern warfare before; and the fight to win ground from the German Second Army continued over 141 days; the battle officially drew to a close on the 19th November 1916. And the Allies won approximately 7 miles or 12 kilometres. The dreadful irony of the situation would be that within 14 months the ground won at such great cost in 1916 would be swept back under the control of the German Army in the Spring Offensive of March and April

1918. On the 1st July 1916 two minutes before 07.30hrs Zero Hour, the largest man-made mine was exploded under a German stronghold, along with 16 others. This was code named Lochnagar, because the soldiers in trenches close by came from the Balmoral area in Scotland. Pat Spencer, from Calpe, who has been speaking to branches of the U3A about the battle, is not a military historian but is interested in the Great War because of the effects of the conflict on her family and a year ago toured battlefields and memorials in Northern France and Belgium. “There are over 250 military cemeteries on the Somme battlefields for the thousands who have identified graves, there are also graves marked as unidentified,” she said. “There are Memorials to the Missing on the Somme battlefield the one at Thiepval, the largest Commonwealth War Memorial in the world and serves as an Anglo – French Battle Memorial.” She added: “The Battle of the Somme should have been quick and decisive, but it turned out to be a long and bloody battle of attrition. “The Battle symbolises the tragedy of war and is remembered throughout all the Commonwealth Countries that fought and died there.”

Dramatic night of fire #NationalNews

by Jack Troughton THE MAGICAL ‘Nit de Focs’ – the night of fires – was once again the dramatic climax of the San Juan festivities in Javea with thousands cramming the streets of the historic Old Town. Midsummer festivals date back thousands of years, yet despite its almost primeval feel, this celebration in the Marina Alta is very modern, first taking place in the 1950s; although its roots are much older. Around the town there are six fires to jump through and at the end a massive bonfire. The fun starts on the stroke of midnight, the start of 24th June and the saint’s day, people wearing crowns of green launch themselves through the flames for luck – and at the end hurl their crowns into the flames to make a wish. To the beat of drums, the festival continues with ‘Correfocs’, running fire. Young and old are chased through the streets by people dressed as monks – just think Klu Klux Klan – carrying fireworks. There are fireworks overhead and sparks everywhere; no one was in their Sunday best. These professionals carry Catherine Wheels, they have several ‘toro de fiego’; metal frames with a bull’s head and more fireworks. There is not a sparkler in sight. Finally, people gather in the Plaza de Constitucion. Drums pound, the correfocs dance, there are more fireworks and the floor literally bounces – there is an underground car park below – as thousands feel the rhythm and jump for joy. And for people experiencing the spectacle for the first time, an official event of cultural and tourist interest, there is an excited feeling of disbelief and all without a health and safety person in sight.

New suspect in Lisa case A MAN arrested in the UK over people smuggling is also wanted for questioning regarding the disappearance of Lisa Brown. by Caroline Tyszka Stephen Jackson, a British yachtsman, admitted smuggling 17 Albanians into Sussex on a catamaran at Lewes Crown Court last week – and police in Spain are interested in interviewing him regarding the missing woman. Lisa, who has not been seen since November last year, disappeared from the Costa del Sol. Her ex-boyfriend Simon Corner has been arrested as the prime suspect. Jackson, 50, has been linked to suspect Corner - with Guardia Civil officers already searching one of his boats - the Daydream and impounding it. Craig Douglas, Lisa’s brother, said: “The police are shaking the tree to see what falls out. These people want to save their own skin so who knows what’ll happen? The family are just dealing with things a day at a time.” Jackson will be sentenced later but he would have to serve any jail term before extradition.

Toyota recall CAR MANUFACTURER Toyota has recalled more than 1.4 million cars worldwide because of faulty airbags. Owners of affected models may find airbags only partially inflate with the inflator possibly emerging inside the car. The recall affects 2010-2012 hybrid Prius and Lexus CT200h cars. Toyota said it was not aware of any injuries or deaths related to the recall

and anyone with a vehicle affected by the recall it is advised to contact a Toyota car dealer.

I am feeling quite upbeat about my business and perhaps if I was younger, I would seriously be considering opening several more offices. But even I have to admit that there comes a time when my brain is working faster than my body. To convince my staff that they would need to work even harder with more offices would not be easy. So I have compromised in making a decision to expand Ex Pat Services. I have taken on two new sales people to concentrate on all the extra products that my company provides. We are doing tremendously well on car and house policies, which in my opinion are the best on the market. So I feel that the time is right to use some of my energy into spreading the word on how good the other products actually are. No one in the UK or the States would be without it. FC Orange win the RTN Cup FC ORANGE won the RTN cup at the weekend, marking the end of yet another tour from the visiting UK team the Chorltonians. by Caroline Tyszka The teams met on Sunday morning for their deciding game which kicked off at 11am on what was an extremely hot day for all the players and their supporters. Whilst the tournament was all about the fun of the game there was the obvious competitiveness and at the final whistle it was FC Orange (Albir) 4 the Chorltonians 1. The Chorltonians have been touring the world for over 40 years and until recently visited a different country each time – that was until five years ago when they came to Benidorm and local expat Ken Scott, author, ghost writer, owner of El Portet Sports, huge football fan and coach organised the teams Spanish tour - they have been returning ever since. Phil Singleton, Chorltonians manager said, “we met Ken and he took care of everything, organising friendlies and a tournament at the end of the week. We enjoyed the experience so much that we kept coming back, this being our fifth year and the boys loved it.” Following the game there was a special award presentation barbeque held at El Portet in Altea. The man of the tournament trophy was presented to Wayne Piper and as the players sat and enjoyed their celebratory feast team captain Phil joined then with a nice glass of red rioja.

Charity funds research CANCER CARE Javea has spent 20,000€ as part of its ongoing pledge to fund an essential laboratory as part of a research project on the Costa Blanca. by Jack Troughton The charity has already invested over 200,000€ into the ECMOR project at Denia Hospital, backing international research into the disease. The latest money will help pay for the running of the lab in the hospital’s oncology department; the English Cathedra of Modern Oncology Research has already purchased for state of the art machinery needed.

The research involves improving the treatment of cancer patients. It aims to personalise intervention by identifying the best selection of drugs to attack a person’s tumour. And it is hoped by finding the most effective medication for an individual, there will be an improvement in the effectiveness of a treatment regime and a decrease in the overall toxicity en-

dured by patients by limiting the ‘cocktail’ of chemicals. Work has already begun to build a data base at the hospital and it is hoped to begin the project proper in the near future, with an official opening of the laboratory later this year. PRIME MINISTER David Cameron was quick to resign on Friday morning as the failure of the ‘Remain’ campaign in the EU Referendum became apparent.

An emotional Premier stepped out into Downing Street with his wife Samantha to face the cameras and announce his decision to step down as “captain of the ship”. Mr Cameron said the British people had made a clear choice in the vote and the country needed “fresh leadership” as it went through the ‘Brexit’ procedure. “It would not be right for me to be captain and steer this country to its next destination,” he said, adding the Queen had been informed. However, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn refused to stand down despite losing the confidence of 172 party colleagues in the House of Commons; instead he faces a bitter leadership battle. Europe claimed another high-profile resignation this week – this time in the world of sport. England manager Roy Hodgson fell on his sword after his sides shock 2-1 defeat to Iceland in the European Championships. Barbed jokes immediately began circulating. It was suggested the government should take on the football coach’s tips on how to leave Europe quickly.

Brexit and its legal consequences for expatriates in Spain. Do not panic. In this weekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s article, we need to talk about the Brexit and how it can affect the British expats living in Spain. First of all, we want to send all the expats a message of calm and support. Do not panic, nothing has happened. Although the favorable vote to the Brexit is a historical fact that very possibly would have important legal implications, the fact is that the legal situation of British expatriates in Spain today is the same as a month ago and in the near future. Therefore, at the current time, there is no effective change in your situation, and there is no need to make hasty and immediate decisions. We have noted already, just few days after the vote, that from different sources the expatriates have been feeling under pressure to make decisions right now, to sell their properties, etc., we understand that there could be hidden interests from those sending these messages. The disconnection procedure from the European Union will be a very slow process, therefore do not rush to any hasty decisions you may regret. We have even heard statements that expatriates could lose their property rights on their properties in Spain, which is absolutely and completely false. What will happen in the future? Probably nobody is able to answer this question at this time. Most likely the United Kingdom will join the European Economic Area, as is currently the case of countries such as Norway, Iceland, etc. allowing the free movement of British citizens in Spain. Or possible new and different kind of relations will be settled with the EU or even specific agreements with Spain given the high number of British residents in this country, as is the case with countries like Switzerland, etc. Main concerns: .-Retired -Residents in Spain wonder whether or not it they will have the obligation to obtain a residence permit and if so, what would be the conditions, and would they will be entitled to get access to medical treatments, health coverage (social security), etc. .- Workers and businesses. Outside of the EU, in British citizens in theory would not have right to the freedom to provide services or residence in the Union. .-Taxes / Fiscal Effects: There may be many types of tax implications. One example: those

heirs who are not tax residents in the European Union, could not benefit from the same tax advantages as those who are in the European Union under current Spanish Inheritance Tax Laws. In our opinion, because of the many links between the UK and the European Union, especially Spain, which is home to the highest number of British expatriates, we are sure that some mechanisms will be articulated through international negotiations and/or agreements with the European Union, and/or with Spain, so expatriates could be able to continue to enjoy their life in this country.

BREXIT so far – 27.6.16 16.22 pm The political and financial ground has moved so fast in the last few days that I thought it appropriate to state the date and time of this article. I have spent hours (between football matches of Euro 2016) surveying websites and, interestingly, news channels from around the world. For a relatively small nation we have certainly made the headlines and you may be surprised to know that they are not all negative. So, where do we go from here? Sterling has just hit 1.20 euros to the pound, the FTSE has declined by only 4.3% since its low point on 23 June (I didn’t take the high point because the markets rallied when they thought we were staying in the EU). We have a retiring prime minister and an opposition leader in doubt. Personally I don’t think a 4.3% drop is too bad given the short term turmoil – a turmoil unprecedented since the war. Obviously I have no experience in a country leaving Europe, but I have been around the block with regard to the investment landscape, and I also have been around the block with a rucksack many years ago to many countries – not quite as many as Alan Wicker (who chose to live in my homeland of Jersey), but enough to raise the question; if Britain can’t go alone – which country could? Given all my own personal experience I’ll say it again – I believe in Britain for lots of reasons, I feel we are developed enough and arguably nationalistic enough to be in charge of our own destiny with much success. I do remember being at an investment seminar given by JP Morgan Investment Managers just after the crisis. The UK had a lot of debt, yet money was flying into London from all over the world. The Managers said they did not understand why this was happening given the UK’s finances but I chipped in my twopenn’orth – in crisis, the rest of the world sought safe sanctuary with someone they trusted. The UK! As the toys are in the air and the dust resettles, there will be winners and losers – for example HSBC said this morning that they will move to Paris and shed 1,000 British jobs, on the other hand, Boeing Corporation have stated their intention to continue investing in the UK. In a nutshell, for all the turmoil, which will be short lived in comparison to the history of civilisation, given that I am a believer in Britain I think sterling will strengthen over the coming months and years as we get our finances straight, but in the short term it has become, and will remain weak. A perfect situation to start establishing new trade deals with new partners! “But establishing new trade deals will be difficult”, I hear you say. Well, maybe, maybe not, but just this morning the USA and China alluded to confirmation of Britain engaging in special trade deals with those respective countries. It’s only 4.22pm – 2 working days after the Brexit vote, for goodness sake. I don’t want to over play the idea that the world wants to trade with UK but that is how it appears. On Saturday Obama’s spokesperson said there had been no change in Obama’s previous statement of Britain getting to the back of the queue. What a difference a couple of days make. But that’s irrelevant anyway as America will have a new president in the coming months and we do have a special relationship with the US. Yes, honestly, we do! So Sterling will stabilise at some point in the future and what do you suppose the rate will level out at – over the 1.20 to the Euro we see today or below? Over time, and I mean the medium to long term, I can only see Sterling increasing in strength. In fact, now that we are free of Europe perhaps one day Sterling/Euro could hit the dizzy heights of 1.6 again which was probably not possible whilst entangled in Europe.

The return you would have received as a percentage would have depended on how much you paid for the shares in the first place – which go up and down on daily stock exchanges but if you are a long term investor you would look for consistent returns. You would only choose to sell the shares if the stock market was extremely favourable, and you would probably buy them back once the market declined - such as right now. You would therefore make a capital gain as well as receiving your dividend, quarterly or half yearly. And this is why the investment managers of the funds we use are paid handsomely to make these money making decisions with lots Company shares on our behalf. In conclusion, the next couple of years it will involve lot of hard graft for our law makers and administrators in Parliament, but it will be a lot easier than going through Brussels. Leaving the EU for us Brits is nerve-racking but look at the opportunities that await our younger generations and their offspring. MOTHER NATURE has been keeping photographer Alec Bettney focussed and busy at his home near Xativa. He took a picture of a brightly coloured crow-sized bird – believing it to be a ‘Yellow Grosbeak’ – in a tree at Torre de Lloris. However, if so it is a native of Mexico and Guatemala...and

Alec was quick to ask: “What is it doing in Spain?” Alec also took a picture of a female Mammoth Wasp, scolia flavifrons. A large and solitary beastie, it is a native of southern Europe; the female can reach 4.5cm in length, the male is slightly smaller. The species appears in warm weather in May, June, July, and August. The wasp is not dangerous despite its black and yellow warning colours and feeds on flower nectar

– the best time to view the insect. The female has a yellow face; the male has a black head and longer antennae. “We released this wasp on earth in a plant pot and it immediately burrowed into the soil,” said Alec. Essential Care of Geraniums From the stocks in garden centres and local markets geraniums continue to be popular plants in spite of the geranium moths that have around for getting on for two decades. But they do need regular care to be their best.

Deadheading Throughout the year deadhead as soon as flowers have died back. This will keep the plants tidy and stimulate follow on flower buds. Dead Leaves Remove all yellow and mottled leaves as they form. Clean tidy plants look better and rotting leaves can attract diseases and pests. Pruning Prune for three reasons. a) To remove any stems that have been damaged by the African geranium moth that has decimated Spanish geraniums in recent years. Look out for small holes which blacken the stems. Do not add cuttings to the compost heap, burn or put in rubbish bags for incineration. b) To shape plants in the early spring and late summer. A good prune of stems and leaves will stimulate strong new gowth and flower buds. c) To take cuttings for propogating . In Spain this can almost be at any time of the year. Watering Geraniums do not like to be overwatered and waterlogged. One will even see large plants in the middle of the countryside alongside a ruined casita flowering well in mid sunshine without watering or feeding. But the plants have been there for years. The roots are deep and for sure have found damp soil under the foundations or rocks and possible seepage from an old well or drain. The key is to keep the soil just damp. Feeding Geraniums need a well balanced feed to stimulate a strong root system, a strong stem framework, healthy leaves and most importantly continuous flowering for as many months of the year as possible. Two approaches are possible – a) Purchase a specialist geranium liquid feed. These normally contain a higher percentage of potash and potassium and a lower percentage of nitrogen than basic general flower fertilizers.

b) Make up your own organic feeds. We feed with a liquid feed prepared from decomposed nettles and comfrey. (which provides a good balance of potassium, potash nitrogen and trace elements.) We suggest the following frequency of feeding geranium plants – December to January (their most dormant months) once a month February/March once a fortnight -when they start to show signs of new growth. April/September weekly The main flowering months October/November fortnightly Hopefully still flowering but slowing down. Watch your plants carefully to achieve the optimum feeding. Slow development of flowering buds and browning leaves suggest too little feeding. Leggy growth with too many leaves and few flowers suggests too much nitrogen and too little potash. . Spraying – against pests and diseases. The main problem is the African Geranium Moth – This moth is small and brown, similar to a butterfly, and causes damage to the plants by boring into the fleshy stems and laying its eggs. It effects mainly the zonal geraniums – which come in a large variety of colours with single ,semi double , and double petals and normally grow better in pots, and Murcinas the trailing varieties. The pelargonium regals, with the crinkly heart shaped leaves, which are best grown in flower beds rather than pots, are less attacked by the moth or not at all if you are lucky. We suggest you spray preventatively twice a week in the Spring and Summer when the moth is about.

Spray with either – i) a proprietary insecticide. Ask your garden centre shop what is the latest for combating the geranium moth. ii) A home made garlic water spay prepared by simmering for 10 minutes 2 crushed whole garlic bulbs in a litre of water and then cooling off before use. One can also sow garlic segments in each pot or alongside plants in the open garden.

Planting New Plants and Repotting a) In the flower bed – mix your existing soil with some good quality general potting compost and worm compost. Make a planting hole slightly bigger than the root ball of the plant. Fill with water and allow to soak away. Plant your plant, firm in and water again. Until the plant is established water regularly so that the root ball doesn’t dry up. b) In terrace pots – make up a good mix of garden soil and potting compost and wet it evenly. Plant, firm in and water again. Best of luck in achieving great long lasting displays.

Hello Aunty Virus: Can you please help me to remove some programmes? I have tried to uninstall but they refuse to let me, the programmes are: ‘istartsurf and flashbeat’. I tried to download kickass free films downloads and these just seemed to latch on to my PC - I then tried to download and install ‘spyhunter’ but was again unsuccessful as I found that ‘binkiland’ had installed itself on my PC. Depressed teen My teenage daughter has suddenly lost interest in what seems to be everything. At 11 she was a happy-go-lucky girl. Now she is nearly 13, and for the last three weeks, she just sits in her bedroom. She doesn’t even look at her phone anymore, and isn’t eating well. She fell out with her friends recently, but won’t tell me what happened. Usually at this age, youngsters go through a period of change and become moody, but this does seem more serious. If she has lost interest in everything, I would say it may have stemmed from falling out with her friends. Do you know the other girls’ mothers? Could you ask them if they know the details of the fall out? Your daughter sounds depressed, and could even be frightened of something. You should get her along to the Doctors as soon as possible, and also have a serious talk with her. The Doctor might recommend some counselling sessions, which would encourage her to open up, if a talk with you doesn’t reveal anything.

Barcelona, June 2016 – A landmark judgment by Spain’s Supreme Court could finally offer closure to the estimated 100,000 Britons whose dreams of owning a place in the sun ended in a nightmare. The ruling paves the way for anyone who paid a deposit to secure an “off-plan” property – but lost it in Spain’s financial crisis – to claim back the money. The Spanish costas are still littered with unfinished holiday homes after the country’s financial meltdown in 2008 drove hundreds of property developers out of business. Would-be buyers who had paid deposits averaging £40,000 never saw their money again as building firms went bankrupt or simply disappeared. But now a decision by Spain’s highest court to hold banks responsible for the missing money deposited in their accounts could allow British victims to claim back up to £4bn in lost deposits, according to research by the law firm Spanish Legal Reclaims. Despite the lack of official data, the firm estimates that Spanish banks could be forced to refund up to £15bn to “off-plan” buyers from across Europe who lost their deposits in the crash. They include Stephanie Davis and her late husband who lost around 75,000 Euros on a house they tried to buy on the Costa del Sol. They bought it “off plan”, and had paid a deposit and several additional payments, totalling half of the 150,000 Euro asking price. They were within days of completing the purchase when the developer, Martinsa Fadesa went into liquidation and she was promised that she would get her money back… but so far she has received just 700 Euros! Stephanie is now retired and living in straitened circumstances after losing so much money. She is desperately hoping that the ruling will force the bank that held her money on behalf of the developer to pay it back. She says, “If I could get my money back that

would be amazing” With more Britons owning a holiday home in Spain than any other nationality, UK citizens were hit disproportionately hard by Spain’s catastrophic property crash. Spanish Legal Reclaims’ research shows that as many as 100,000 Britons who had paid deposits to reserve an off-plan property in Spain lost some or all their money when the country’s construction industry imploded. Help wins at a stroke By Jack Troughton THE SIXTH Annual Golf Day staged by HELP of Denia and the Marina Alta raised more than 5,000€. The day began at 9.15am with a ‘shotgun’ start at Oliva Nova Golf Club and after players completed their round, golfers, families and friends enjoyed a buffet lunch in the clubhouse. And after the meal, Dr Mike Grillage, who came especially from England to support the charity, hosted an ‘Irish Auction’. The winner, Steve Ratcliffe received 95€ for successfully being ‘the last man standing’. Once the auction was over it was time to present winners with their prizes. The overall winners were Kevin Waterland and Geoff Morrow who carried off the HELP Golf Trophy, a round of golf at Oliva Nova

and a selection of fine wines. Candida Wright, President of HELP of Denia & Marina Alta thanked everyone for making the day a success and especially thanked Damian Perez, Sports Director at Oliva Nova for his patience and assistance to her to make it a great day. Cornwall Cornwall has inspired countless artists and writers.

For instance, during a trip to the picturesque county, English landscape artist JMW Turner painted Land’s End and the Longships Lighthouse. And in his childhood Sir John Betjeman enjoyed family holidays to Trebetherick, near Polzeath. Betjeman’s love affair with Cornwall is reflected in his poems Seaside Golf and Summoned by Bells. My wife and I have long wanted to revisit Cornwall with its stunning coastlines stretching from Polperro to Portreath and Penzance. And so when the opportunity arose, Caroline, baby daughter Harriett and I jumped at the chance. On rare occasions, Harriett and showers permitting, it was enjoyable to simply sit on a bench and savour this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. “I gradually discovered the remarkable landscape which lies between St Ives, Penzance and Land’s End,” said world-renowned sculptor Barbara Hepworth in 1952 – her gallery is in St Ives. In fact modern art lovers find plenty to entertain them in St Ives as it’s also home to the Tate Gallery where there was an exhibition of work by Alex Katz. At the entrance to the town is Leach Pottery, founded in 1920. One of the great figures of 20th century art, Leach played a crucial pioneering role in creating an identity for artist potters in Britain and around the world. Cornwall isn’t just famous for art though, it’s also the setting for the Inspector Wycliffe novels and subsequent TV series as well as ITV’s Doc Martin starring Martin Clunes. Doc Martin’s cottage can be found in picturesque Port Isaac. “That series has had a detrimental effect on this historic fishing village,” says a village shopkeeper. “It’s driven away those who used to holiday here four or five times a year and replaced them with tourists. But I’m philosophical about it and hope that the new breed will keep coming back.” Further along the coast the quaint port of Padstow is home to Rick Stein’s Seafood Restaurant, which provides tasty takeaway fish and chips as well as Chalky’s Bark - aged beer brewed by Sharp’s brewery in Cornwall. A big disappointment for us though, was Mevagissey because its narrow roads made driving incredibly problematic while there was not much parking either. Delve deeper into its history and you discover that in the 18th century the fishing village was famous for smuggling brandy, gin and lace. Some say that this was the reason for Mevagissey’s awkward lanes, deliberately designed to impede the efforts of the enforcement officers. In our opinion the village should be pedestrianized because you frequently have to look over your shoulder

for the next vehicle, which is a hindrance with a small child. In 1789 Andrew Pears saw little future in Mevagissey and headed to London subsequently creating famous Pears soap. The key to a successful and relaxing holiday is a comfy night’s rest and this was certainly achieved at Gwel an Mor, the five star holiday resort at Portreath where there are 60 luxury self-catering Scandinavian lodges. We booked through Hoseasons, the holiday specialists, and our three double bedroom lodge with balcony was equipped with a luxurious hot tub. There was even a video library at the Clubhouse so we borrowed The Boat That Rocked and thoroughly enjoyed it. We hired bicycles, too for cycling along the mining trails. This proved to be a great way for sending Harriett off to sleep. Gwel an Mor’s Wildlife Experience is hugely popular with children and adults alike - there’s plenty to learn. “Slow worms can live to be over 50 years old,” says wildlife expert Gary Zammit during our two-hour walk where we also saw reindeer, rescue foxes, voles and wood mice. He adds: “Flowers and animals have lots of different regional names, which can be confusing so it’s much safer to rely on the Latin names, which are universal.” Swimming in the Gwel an Mor pool of an evening ensured that Harriett had a restful night’s sleep and if we had had the energy we would’ve made it to the gym but the Terrace restaurant was more appealing! There we were treated to some wholesome home cooked food including an enjoyable chicken saltimbocca while little Harriett tucked into a child’s portion of grilled salmon. Holidays are about pampering and Caroline enjoyed a velvet foot care treatment at Gwel an Mor’s spa, using Thal’ion, a French product that contains seaweed and essential oils. Feeling much rejuvenated and relaxed, Cornwall inspired our creativity.

Entertainment as provided by 34 performers, all kept in order by Master of Ceremonies Andy Headford-Lord – who also kept the audience amused with his fascinating facts about Queen Elizabeth II. A ceremonial cake was made by HELP volunteer, 80-year-old Mary Wood and was cut by charity President Elaine Horton - who told guests that she greatly admired Queen Elizabeth II for her devotion to duty and was surprised to find herself cutting a 90th birthday cake for her. And all the guests stood to sing ‘Happy Birthday, Your Majesty’, before raising a glass of cava in a toast to the Queen. The rousing finale to the evening was provided by Joanna Baldwin and Music Unlimited, and the audience stood to join in with Rule Britannia, Land of Hope and Glory and Jerusalem, with much cheering and flag waving. At this point, Her Majesty graced the event with her presence and accepted the appreciation of those present. Rugrat has missed the chance of true Hollywood notoriety ´The Wolf of Wall Street´ premiered in New York City on December 17, 2013, and was a major commercial success, grossing more than $392 million worldwide and became Martin Scorsese’s most financially successful movie to date. Wonderful news for all concerned, including Leonardo DiCaprio´s production company Appian Way Productions as well as Paramount Pictures, Red Granite Pictures and Sikelia Productions … but all is not as you would expect at these gilt-edged companies. Last week the Hollywood Reporter leaked a story that each of the above businesses have to answer a deposition stemming from the depiction of one of the characters in the movie. The film is based on a true story with Leonardo playing Jordan Belfort, and this man´s actual former partner Andrew Greene is suing all of the above for $15 million for portraying him in the film in such a way that his reputation has allegedly been damaged. Greene claims the movie depicts him as toupee-wearing character Nicky “Rugrat” Koskoff, played by P.J. Byrne, and says that although the film changed his nickname from “Wigwam” to “Rugrat,” there’s no mistaking the character is meant to be Greene. The initial claim by Greene for malicious libel was lodged 18 months ago and the figure he was asking at that time was $50 million, so quite a spectacular climb-down for ´Wigwam´ or is it ´Rugrat!´ The lawsuit takes issue with multiple aspects of the character´s depiction, including the constant teasing and joking about his hairpiece. “I called him ‘Rugrat” said DiCaprio “because of his piece of s*** hairpiece. Cheeky Leonardo! This truly farcical situation goes on with Greene saying “I was made out to be a criminal, drug user, degenerate, depraved and devoid of any morals or ethics,” ´if the hat fits´ drops in rather nicely here. Notoriety is the major building block when it comes to Hollywood and beyond, and perhaps if ´Wigwam´ or ´Rugrat,´ or Andrew Greene even, were to have backed off from all the silliness he has now buried himself in, seeing the amusing side of it all would surely have got him to a better place than ass***e of the century! On yer bike Andrew! A film of Leicester footballer Jamie Vardy´s life will definitely make it to the big screen, and in the wake of Harry Styles’ story last week about him going into acting, other One Direction-er Louis Tomlinson could possibly do the same as he´s the hot fav to play Jamie. From what I ´ve gleaned Vardy´s story is certainly worthy of our attention, the problem is that personally I have yet to see a film that centres on football, or indeed any other sport, that has held my attention past a dozen or so minutes. Former footballer Vinnie Jones is currently being courted to play Nigel Pearson, Vardy´s original manager when he joined Leicester, with Vinnie telling The Sun “I’ve been approached and I’ve said that I’m interested!” Get out there and prove me wrong guys!

NBC in America aired yet another reality programme called ´Strong´ in April, but unfortunately the Sylvester Stallone and NBC produced show are now being sued by a physical trainer named Robert Fletcher for allegedly stealing his idea. Robert shopped the format around as “America’ Next Great Trainer” in 2014, at which time he pitched the idea to Sly’s agent and publicist. Robert goes on to state that the premise of his show involving teams of male trainers and female trainees competing in different physical challenges is exactly like the ´Strong´ show! To make matters worse for our ageing hunk, in February Stallone and director Ryan Coogler were sued by Jared Alexander who said they had stolen his idea for a movie after he wrote a screenplay called, “Creed: Rocky Legacy.” Now we know why they call him Sly!

On Sunday 19th June Elton John set up a live concert at Westpoint Arena, Exeter, and although he did his usual slick job on the night, peeps with tickets got stuck on the M5 motorway for up to four hours, some even abandoning their cars and walking the rest of the way to the venue … others were forced to give up their attempt to reach the gig. Westpoint tweeted it was sorry for the hold up and advised furious fans to contact the box office they purchased their tickets from in order to get a refund, before adding “a mixture of issues contributed to the traffic jams, including poor weather and a number of minor accidents,” a statement that’s like something from the dark ages. “Will never visit Westpoint Exeter again” tweeted Kerry Jean. I´ll bet Elton rattled their cage!

Here´s something rather quirky I found for you the other day. Music fans either want to be a pop star or have sex with one, but there’s a third reaction, and that’s a strong desire to jab them with a pointy stick. It’s not a hate thing; it’s just the knowledge that jabbing them with pointy sticks might well make the world a better place. Here is the top 5 1. Good call! On the subject of my serious dislike of reality shows, I have a secret to share with you. In 2002 I was told about ´The Osbourne’s,´ so I watched it and was fascinated by the raw energy Ozzy and family brought to TV. The Osbourne´s went out on MTV, and, in its first season, was cited as the most-viewed series ever on the network. I´d never heard such free flowing swear words, almost entirely from Ozzy of course. But all things must pass and here we are 14 years on with news that daughter Kelly has written a tell-all book of the time and its rather sweetly named “There’s No F***ing Secret!” “People always ask me what my secret is,” she told celeb website Us. “I can now honestly say that there’s no f***ing secret!” Aha! Now there´s a title for a book!

Battle soundtrack by Jack Troughton

THE TRADITIONAL re-enactment of the battles between the Moors and Christians in Moraira took a dramatic vocal twist with a performance by The English Choir. The 35-strong choir provided the musical background as the invading Moors were ‘evicted’ by the Christians from the seafront castle; depicting an 800-year-old struggle. The choir sang pieces from ‘Camina Burana’ and ‘Vangelis Conquest of Paradise’ as the battle raged on the sands below. And choir President John Turner said: “We were honoured to be asked by the local Moors and Christians association to join their pageant yet again. We believe we acquitted ourselves well; as cries of ‘fantastico’ rang out from both the director and the audience.” Choir members were happy to be good Europeans and take part – and even happier to overcome the shockwaves of the traditional firing of loud blunderbusses. Spiritual summer

SPIRITUAL FRIENDS has two final meetings this month at Moraira’s SolPark Tennis before the group takes its summer break. On Wednesday 6th July, the speaker will be Bodhin Woodward from the Solterreno Retreat in Benimaurell, La Vall de Laguar. And on 13th July the group will watch a DVD and afterwards discuss the subject of ‘Afterlife’. Spiritual Friends is open to anyone spiritually and holistically minded. Surprise special guest at jam session THE ALFAZ del Pi train station bar was packed as usual this Sunday with local musicians and fans of live music, with one special addition, a founding member of the Foundations – Mr Alan Warner – who got up and played along with the house band. In 1966 Warner joined The Ramong Sound and through the band’s name change and evolution came The Foundations - who had hits with “Baby, Now That I’ve Found You”, “Back On My Feet Again” and “Build Me Up Buttercup.” The Foundations broke around the end of 1970. Alan, who was visiting friends in the area told RTN that the jam session was “a fantastic chance to play and it was so much fun.” Nicky Chapman, who runs the train station bar jam session on Sunday afternoon, has also started a Thursday evening session at the Brew Rock bar in Albir which starts at 7 pm until 11 pm.

Our English Accent

I have been giving some thought lately about some of the more subtle differences between English and Spanish accents. What instantly marks us out as English speakers, apart from the obvious giveaways of the “socks and sandals” variety? What is it that makes our accent so obviously foreign, even when our general grasp of Spanish pronunciation is reasonably good? I talk about one of these issues quite often when teaching beginners Spanish and also when talking in general about cultural differences, and that is the importance of “assertiveness” and the related subject of “volume”. It doesn’t matter how wonderful your Spanish is, if you whisper it you will not get your message across. You will just sound like any other terrified foreigner who can barely string two words together. Whatever you want to say, double the volume and it will sound much more “native”. Secondly comes the issue of rhythm and emphasis which we have been talking about over the last few weeks. I cannot emphasize enough what a difference this makes to understanding. Some people find it hard to hear some of these variations, and sometimes I think it is connected to having an ear for music. Language has its own musical flow, and we will instinctively reproduce the rhythm of our native language, unless we identify and learn alternative sounds. Now getting down to the nitty-gritty, we have vowel sounds. These are our really big giveaway. Each of the Spanish vowels consists of a single, fairly short sound, whereas the typical English vowel sound is either very long, containing several sounds in one, or very short, right at the back of the throat. I can’t reproduce this in print, so you’ll just have to listen to yourself speak and think about it. These wandering and clipped English vowel sounds are more pronounced the further south of the British Isles you come from, whereas the Scottish vowel sounds are closest to Spanish. Possible even more difficult for us to hear, is the quality of our consonants. English consonant sounds are generally very strong, often being produced somewhere in the middle of the mouth – think of g, n, r, s, t, d. Also the consonants we make with our lips are quite definite – p, m, b. There are all sorts of technicalities surrounding this subject, but as a general observation, we can say that Spanish consonants are far, far lighter and softer. The lips join more lightly, and many sounds almost disappear completely. “Agua” sounds more like “awa”, “jueves” can sound more like “weves” and so on. The most obvious English consonants of all are our “d” and “t” sounds. We produce these using our teeth, and with the tongue safely tucked away behind them. The Spanish make a very soft “d” and “t” with the tongue right up against, or even between, the front teeth. When these two sounds are followed by an “r”, the whole thing is formed at the front of the mouth. To understand what I mean – say “tres” the way you would normally say it (assuming you have a typical English accent!) and then try and make the “tr” sound right at the front of your mouth, with your tongue between your front teeth. You should hear a very big difference. There is one other important difference between English and Spanish pronunciation which I now do not have room to tell you about, so I will tackle it next week. Fry is right as we venture back to that long hot 1976 UK Summer in the sparkling jewel of the Midlands that is - Birmingham – look! you smug London elite, stop sniggering into your Café Caramel Macchiato (milky coffee with gunk) lest you forget the Remain Campaign Cock-up. At that time I was at BRMB radio, located in Aston right by the HP factory & Ansell’s Brewery. Disappointingly never once did he bang on about the Queen Mum or Bob Hope being part of a shape-shifting reptilian master race. The only strong memory was his very bad dandruff,which is maybe why he took to wearing white robes or multi coloured shell suits. We were in the old ABC T.V. studios, where the aforementioned TYLS was recorded. It was here the Beatles made their second national TV appearance. Brian Matthew was the main host, although Jimmy Savile was lurking (be afraid).Those of a certain vintage (old) will remember the spin-a-disc segment where new releases were critiqued by a panel. I fell for Ms. Nicholls, not in a salacious way, but because she gave the very odd sounding 45rpm ‘Duke Of Earl’ by Gene Chandler (still love it) a big fat foive – the others hated it. She met most of the groovy hipsters – which brings us to our tell all moment. During an interview with her years later I asked who was - 1.The most amorous - 2.The most approachable - 3.The most arrogant? Here we go -1. Adam Faith, who was very ‘hands on’ until boyfriend Burly Brian requested him to ‘desist & refrain’- or something along those Brummagem lines. 2. Paul McCartney, a gent & truly a FAB FOIVE! 3. Twice baked potatoes A great side dish for entertaining, these mitt–warming potatoes can be made several hours or even a day in advance. After filling, cover tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate. Try a variation with mushrooms and truffle oil or chives.

INGREDIENTS 6 Medium baking potatoes, scrubbed and pierced lightly 1/4 cup Butter, at room temperature 1/2 cup Sour cream, at room temperature 1/4 cup Buttermilk, at room temperature 1 tsp Kosher salt 2 Scallions, green and white parts, minced 3/4 cup Grated cheddar cheese, plus more for garnish 1/4 cup Grated parmesan cheese 1/4 cup Cooked and crumbled bacon, plus more for garnish Freshly ground black pepper, to taste Butter, for dotting the tops DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 350°F and bake the potatoes directly on the oven rack until tender, about 1 – 1 1/4 hours. Cool 15

minutes. 2. Laying the potatoes on their sides, cut off the top 4 and reserve, and gently scoop out the flesh with a spoon, leaving 1/4” thick shells. 3. Force the scooped flesh through a ricer, or mash with a masher in a mixing bowl. Add the remaining ingredients, and gently mix with a fork or a wooden spoon. Taste to adjust the seasonings. 4. Spoon the filling back into the potato skins, and dot with butter. Replace the cut–off tops and gently wrap with aluminum foil in a way that signals the right–side up. Place on upper rack of a pre–heated barbecue and bake until heated through and beginning to brown, about 30 minutes. 5. If made ahead and refrigerated, bake for 35–40 minutes. 6. To Serve: Open foil, discard tops and garnish with a little extra grated cheddar and crumbled bacon.

½ teaspoon maple syrup 1½ teaspoon apple cider vinegar ¼ teaspoon celery salt 1 pinch black pepper 1 teaspoon water Juice of one lime Instructions 1. Pre-heat oven to 375 degrees F. 2. Make the slaw: In a medium sized bowl add all of the slaw dressing ingredients. Mix ingredients together until a creamy sauce has formed. In a large bowl, add the cabbage mixture and pour dressing over. Mix until everything is combined. Place in the refrigerator until ready to use. 3. In a small bowl or jar, add all of the BBQ rub ingredients and mix together. 4. Separate all of the cauliflower florets and chop them

into bite size pieces. Place florets and chickpeas onto a large sheetpan and drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with BBQ rub. Depending on the size of your head of cauliflower you may not need to use all the rub. Toss everything together with your hands so that cauliflower and chickpeas are coated with the rub. Place the sheetpan in the oven and bake for about 25 minutes, flipping once. 5. If desired, warm up corn tortillas on the stove or in the oven. Add about ¼ cup of cauliflower and chickpeas to each taco and top with a few tablespoons of slaw. Top with sliced jalapenos if desired. 6. Enjoy! Past Master of the Serendipity Lodger of Master Masons Bill Reeves and his wife Eileen visited the charity’s base at the IMED building in Teulada for the last coffee morning of the season to present the cheque. Home España Support Local Football Team in Los Montesinos Tournament with message of NO TO DRUGS From Thursday 23 to Sunday 26 June, Los Montesinos local council and sports department hosted their annual youth football tournament, this year promoting the strong and important social message “No a la droga” or in English “No to drugs”. With around 500 young people from 49 local football clubs involved over the four days of action, this was seen as a great opportunity to deliver the Ayuntamientos important message of “No To Drugs”. This was done with great success in a fun and also competitive environment to local young people from ages 7 to 18, plus of course their parents and local attendees. Home España, the largest Estate Agent on the Costa Blanca, directly supported one of the local teams participation in the tournament, Racing San Miguel CF, who for this tournament donned the name HomeEspaña San Miguel. This year, the company have launched a new Social Responsibility programme which will see the company invest time, expertise, knowledge and also financial investment back into the local communities across the region. The message of “No To Drugs” the tournament is championing is close to the heart of CEO Tracey Hawkins who comments “At Home España we are striving to use our strengths as individuals and as a company to support the local community where we can, so when we heard about the tournament and important message, along with the need of the local San Miguel clubs for kit to take part, we were keen to get involved”. HomeEspaña San Miguel were just one goal away from qualifying for finals day after they required 3 goals in their final match on Saturday which ended in a 2-2 draw after relentless second half pressure just couldn´t secure the win they needed. Nevertheless, all 11 children involved had a great tournament and should be proud of themselves. The tournament was a massive success with so many participants, locals and family attending. The message of “No To Drugs” was clear and the enjoyment of the whole four days of play was fantastic to see. pego golf society “team accumulator” competition With the weather on the dull side, and the high temperatures of the past few weeks down a little, it was the perfect conditions to play golf. The course is 90% back to its best, and with the green staff pouring on water to all fairways and greens, it was in a beautiful condition to play. Today we played a Team Accumulator, where in Stableford points, we were in teams of four persons, and with two to count at par 5’s, and 3 to count at par 4’s and all four to count at par 3’s. We had 43 players in today, which included five guests and they were Richard Morris, Ray McAvoy, Neil Elwell and Gordon McBain, and Phil Darren. All were made very welcome by our committee. In the main part of the competition, the results were as follows Texas Scramble Results 1st Place with 116 Points and the winners was the team of Paul Trigwell, Neil Elwell, David Blakeley and Gordon McBain. 2nd Place with 115 Points was the team of Stella Fox, Terry Oram, Paul Singh and of course Mr Ghost 3rd Place with 110 Points was the team of Shaun O’Gorman, Richard Morris, John Evans and Linda Davies The “Balls in the Water” prize numbered 92 balls in the water and that was not won so it will be carried forward until next week. Nearest the hole at Hole 5 with their second shot was Nigel

Siddall with 0.56 meters, and at hole 16, the closest tee shot was one of our senior members, namely Mike Holloway, who put it 2.40 meters. Well played both of you and congrats. 10 trophies for the 6 Club Natacion Torrevieja swimmers by patricia thompson

This Sunday Torrevieja hosted the “VX City of Torrevieja Traversia” where 160 swimmers of all ages came together to compete in a 2,250m sea swim. After the brilliant sunshine of the previous weeks the competitors arrived at Playa de Los Locas, Torrevieja, on a dull and windy Sunday morning. The sea looked less than inviting over the grey skies and the water felt cold. However all competitors went off at a fine speed and struggling with waves that hid the marker buoys all swimmers finished their race at Playa del Cura, Paseo Juan Aparicio, about 35 minutes later. Club Natacion Torrevieja had six swimmers entered into the competition and all 6 made their club proud. First to finish for the team was Zoe Connolly, the first female of the competition to finish and the 4th swimmer to finish overall with a time of 33:27. This placed her 1st in category Junior Female and 1st in the female local swimmers competition. Followed directly after her, being placed 6th overall, was co-team mate and friend Piroska Rideg, coming second in the Junior Female category and 2nd in the local female competition. Piroska’s time 34:05.

To finish an outstand set of results Skye Burns fellow team mate and best friend came in 3rd in the Female Junior category and 3rd in the local females category, Skye’s time 35:55. Skye finished as the 18th fastest swimmer in the competition. What makes this such an impressive win is three best friend, in the top three positions, swimming in an age category far older than their ages. Nobody could have guessed these three friend could achieve so much together. Well done girls! And not to be “out swam” the only male member of Club Natacion Torrevieja team, Yuriy Lymar, matched the girls results finishing first in the Male Senior category and 1st in the local male category, with a time just behind Piroska of 34:09, placing him 6th of the 160 swimmers. Then the two older swimmers of the club kept up the winning streak with Vicki Connolly, being the oldest of her category, placed 2nd in the Female Masters B group with a time of 37:10 and finishing 25th of the 160 swimmers. Fellow team mate and friend, Beth Altabas, then followed placed 1st in the Female Masters D category with a time of 42:52 and 60th of the 160 swimmers. So a total of 10 trophies for Torrevieja 6 swimmers. Congratulations to all.

Winning ways at Javea FELICITY JENKINS and Mike Wynne were victorious in the seeded drawn Aussie Pairs competition at Javea Inn on the Green Bowls Club. The tournament was enjoyed by all 24 teams taking part with a 1,000€ prize money being shared between the six bowlers of the first three pairs. The teams were in four groups of six pairs, the winner of each group progressing to a semi-final. And in the final itself, Felicity and Mike narrowly beat Diane Wynne and Christine Day; a match played over four ends and only Felicity’s last bowl separating the pairs. Sponsor Colin Johns of SK Underwriting presented the prizes to the winners, followed by a free barbecue for all the players and guests. This is a unique competition in that it gives all players an equal chance of winning and it is solely for Javea Green Bowls members to enter. Jeep Cherokee There is a real struggle to be different in the motoring world. Not only do the motoring journalists have to find an angle different to their peers but so to do the manufacturers.

It’s got the point where I have to sit for five minutes in the driving seat of the new Jeep Cherokee before I dare to drive off. That’s not because I don’t know how to get it started, that’s just a matter of putting your foot on the brake and pushing the start button. No, the difficulty I have is familiarising myself with the important things like how to operate the radio and the heating. While their positioning does differ from model to model I find it substantially different in the Jeep and am not comfortable trying to change radio station or the temperature while driving. As you can see in the video at testdrives.biz there are some neat touches to this vehicle not least the striking bonnet with its chrome grille and slit eye headlights, which surprisingly throw out a good amount of light. It certainly looks the business finished in True Blue. The black leather seats and interior could be quite dark if it were not for the enormous panoramic glass roof incorporating electric tilt/slide sunroof. But thanks to this excellent roof, high levels of light pour into the cabin. With its nine speed automatic gearbox it is so easy to drive despite its size and manoeuvring is a sinch with the help of the reversing camera. Adaptive cruise control automatically keeps

this 4x4 a safe distance from the car in front. I have qualms. The boot is not as large as I would expect; it is not possible to transport 10 bags of logs in it, three have to go in the front. However, once the rear seats are folded there is much more space if needed. My other niggle is the fact that the reflection of the stitched dashboard can be seen in the windscreen which can be off-putting for the driver. Then there’s the digital miles per gallon reading which for me sits uncomfortably in the middle of the dashboard. I initially get confused and think this is my speed. And then there is the placement of the dial for snow, sand or sport. It is in front of the gearstick to the top left. That doesn’t sound very far away but in reality unless you are a tall American with a long arm it means that the driver has to inevitably take their eye off the road, lean over and turn the dial. Not ideal. A neat touch is the heated steering wheel which includes since 1941 on it. When driving at night the driver discovers that the Cherokee is fitted with headlights that will automatically go to full beam and dim when vehicles approach. There is an annoying

delay when selecting full beam manually and when using the automatic function it is not infallible dipping full beam too late and sometimes too soon which can make night time driving problematic. Overall it travels well at speed but the brakes are not as precise as I might like and it can wallow a bit at times but then it is a 4x4 so what do you expect?
