At RTN Towers the team has joined with colleagues at The Olive Press and media organisations across Europe in supporting a petition calling for real representation back home and a slice of security for our lives as expats here. Largely ignored during the Brexit campaign, it seems Brits living in the EU and EU citizens in the UK could face becoming the ‘bargaining chips’ in negotiations and we must avoid becoming sacrificial lambs in the fallout. In short, sign the petition. Wild animals in the real world made the headlines last weekend with the horrific death of a keeper at Terra Natura, attacked by a tiger she cared for; an official inquiry will seek to discover what went wrong. Bengal Tigers are magnificent beasts and it is heartening to learn the big cat ‘Kali’ is unlikely to be put down, especially as the dead woman’s family say they want the animal to be shown mercy – saying it is also what the dead keeper would have wanted.

Dogs face destruction ANGRY ANIMAL lovers fear plans for a new dog shelter could mean the sacrifice of scores of dogs rescued from the streets. by Jack Troughton Javea Town Hall has announced plans to move its existing pound – run by animal charity APASA – to new premises on the outskirts of the municipality and away from homes. However, Councillor Kika Mata has announced the new facility will only have kennel space for 20 dogs and the charity currently cares for around 260. APASA President Mandy Conway said she was to meet Mayor Jose Chulvi on Monday to discuss the crisis. “What happens to all our other dogs? I certainly don’t know at the moment, I am as shocked as everyone else at this news. “We certainly have not been consulted over any of this but people are up in arms, perhaps they do not realise the power of social media.” APASA dogs are re-homed locally and across Europe. However, it has a policy that no healthy animal is put to sleep and there is a residual population of over 200 at the refuge. “Summer is always a busy time for us with dogs being abandoned or lost” added Mandy. “We have just had 20 puppies come in after being abandoned at rubbish bins. “The mayor knows the good work we do and I have had people ringing me up non-stop since this was announced; we have a lot of supporters who give us money to help our work – unfortunately, this has come at a time everything was going so well with the charity.”

Tiger safe THE TIGER that killed a keeper in a tragic accident at Terra Natura wildlife park in Benidorm on Saturday is unlikely to be put down. by Jack Troughton The 37-year-old woman died of her injuries after being attacked by the powerful Bengal Tiger while cleaning pens away from public areas. And the animal was immediately sedated to allow emergency teams to get to the stricken woman, who had worked at Terra Natura for eight years, but they could do nothing to save her life. Terra Natura is home to three tigers – two are Bengal Tigers which are an endangered species with only an estimated 2,500 left in the wild, the third a Sumatran Tiger. Animal lovers immediately expressed concerns for the tiger, named Kali, and it now appears the animal’s future has been secured, according to national newspaper El Mundo - quoting ‘sources’ at the park. “It was never our intention to let the tiger be killed – the victim’s family don’t want this to happen and neither would she have done,” said an insider. “The animal was only acting on natural instinct.” After the incident at the wildlife park, Terra Natura immediately sent its condolences to the keeper’s family and friends, saying “all staff at the park are shocked and deeply affected by the tragic news”. In a statement, the park said it “complied with strict safety protocol for the handling of animals” and the keeper “came into direct contact with the animal while cleaning interior pens.” And it said the keeper had worked at Terra Natura for eight years and was an “expert” on felines and other species. Alberto Gaforio, the park’s manager, said he hoped the circumstances of the “fatal incident” could be cleared up as soon as possible, and said the victim had “wide experience as a zoo keeper”. In an interview with the EFE news agency, he said: “She has been with us for eight years working with felines and all kinds of species. She was very professional and had a lot of experience, and we still don’t know for sure what could have happened.” Mr Gaforio conveyed condolences from all the management team and staff and said everyone was “concerned and devastated over what happened.

The Home Secretary sparked fury in an interview when she said: “What is important is there will be a negotiation here as to how we deal with that issue of people who are already here and Brits who have established a life in other countries within the UK. “There’s no change at the moment, but of course we have to factor that into the negotiations.” Her view is in stark contrast to leadership rival Andrea Leadsom – who was part of the ‘leave’ campaign leading up the 23rd June ballot – who wants to protect the rights of European migrants living in the UK and some two million British expats currently living in Europe. Daniel Wilkinson, Managing Director of RTN, said: “It is time for our leaders to give some real guarantees about our lives here in Spain and across Europe. We stand up for expats and never has this been more important following the referendum. PROTECT “The British Government has a duty to protect its citizens and their rights across the continent; politicians must now step up and be seen to take a positive and responsible role.” The Olive Press’ Rob Hogan said: “We are more accustomed to fighting the wrongs of foreign governments but now the threat is from the UK and puts the lives of millions of expats across the continent in jeopardy. “Theresa May’s comments are alarming, to say the least, and have put all our lives in limbo. We urge all expats across the EU to join our campaign in order to be assured that we have the right to remain in the countries where we have chosen to work and live.” Lenox Napier, writer and RTN contributor, is part of a team launching the Europats initiative aimed at finding expats a voice in London, Madrid and Brussels. “We need security and a promise”. He said there were up to two million British expats living within the EU and something like 20 million Europeans living in other EU countries. “Who speaks for them? Benidorm cast sing to fans THE ‘BENIDORM’ cast performed a mixture of musical comedy and karaoke to their many fans at the weekend for charity. by Caroline Tyszka Raising funds for the children of Emaus actors such as John Challis and Crissy Rock took to the UK Cabaret Club stage on Saturday night to a sing to a sell-out audience. Wearing their free Solana wrist bands the series fans were entertained by the writer Derren Litten, who took to the stage to open the show - announcing that the cast members were behind the curtain with their knees knocking. Mateo, actor Jake Canuso, performed “Besime” to swooning women of all ages whilst John Challis sang “My Way” in his own unique style. The cast queued up to perform to help the charity, which is desperate for funding, with a promise that this year the money will go to give the Altea children’s home a modern bathroom. Raffle tickets sold like hot cakes as audience members desperately hoped they would be the one to win signed memorabilia items such as a script or a Solana t-shirt. One super fan even paid 200€ to have her picture taken with a few of the cast members, adding to the provisional total of 11,000€.

Alberto given chequered flag THE RACE to get a 10-year-old Alberto mobile has been won with a final donation of 3,500€ to a public appeal fund. The Original Charity Shop and Library in Javea has donated the money – which on top of months of fund raising across the Marina Alta – will buy a specially adapted vehicle. Alberto suffers a severe neuromuscular disease and mum Jessica Molina Romero was finding it increasingly hard to lift him and his wheelchair into her car to transport him to hospital appointments, therapy sessions, school or just family outings. The appeal targeted an expensive second hand car but organisers soon believed a new car, adapted with a wheelchair ramp was achievable. Rapid response SWIFT ACTION by emergency teams brought a woodland wildfire swiftly under control on the Costa Blanca on Monday afternoon. Seven homes were briefly threatened by flames but families did not need to be evacuated from the Els Molins urbanisation at Benitachell because of the coordinated response by firefighters, Civil Proteccion, local police and specialist forest units – all supported by two helicopters. The town hall, which has recently installed a network of fire hydrants, believes the system helped control and extinguish the fire by providing large amounts of water in a short time to an affected area.

Spanish airline cancels flights by Caroline Tyszka EXTRA POLICE were called into Barcelona airport at the weekend to calm down passengers whose flights with airline Vueling had been cut due to ongoing problems. Another air traffic control strike on Tuesday also caused hundreds of flight to be cancelled with many of the low cost airlines including the Spanish no frills carrier Vueling. Owned by IAG, Vueling cancelled over sixty flights on the day with Ryanair cancelling 102 and leaving 18,000 passengers having to reschedule their plans. However, the problems for Vueling began last Thursday when many flights were delayed for over twelve hours and several were cancelled, leaving many families starting their summer holidays facing severe disruption. The airline blamed the difficulties on “operational problems” which were then further complicated by the ATC strike. A union representative has said that the problems for the airline have come following the launch of a summer schedule which has not taken into account the additional planning and staff required. The country’s Public Works Ministry has said the airline will face an inquiry and that a fine may be issued with the possibility of Vueling’s permanent licence being replaced with a temporary one. The airline has said that it will be hiring approximately thirty additional pilots and look to rent another six planes to fulfil their obligations.

Fugitive drug dealer caught A convicted Irish drug dealer was arrested in Spain after spending more than a year on the run and has appeared before a court back in his homeland. Mark Dunford, aged 41 and originally from Waterford, but with an address at Ballylagan Lane, Coleraine, was arrested under a European Arrest Warrant on Saturday 25th June with the assistance of the Spanish police. He appeared at Ballymena Magistrates Court on Wednesday morning charged with selling amphetamines to the value of £200,000 – an offence that he had previously pleaded guilty to. Deputy District Judge Laura Levers remanded him in custody to appear for sentence at a Crown Court on July 27th.

Pulled to safety by Jack Troughton LIFEGUARDS HELPED by members of the public pulled swimmers to safety from dangerous rocks at a Costa Blanca beach on Sunday. People formed a human chain through the surf to rescue bathers swept into danger at Bol Nou, Villajoyosa. Retired couple Mike and Doreen Sambrook, who live in La Cala Finestrat, were at the beach with their daughter Claire out for a holiday, said the sea was rough and needed to be “respected”. “However, a few people did not and found themselves being swept dangerously too near the rocks – the quick-thinking life-

guards raced into the sea to save them,” said Mike. “Onlookers realised that they needed help and quickly made a human chain to assist. Those ‘rescued’ needed time to recover.” The couple, originally from South Wales have lived in Spain for 15 years, said the police and ambulance service were also alerted. Mike, a keen RTN reader, said until the drama it had been a lovely day but the waves got stronger as the sea “got up”. He added: “People got into trouble – the two lifeguards went in and everyone on the beach got up and helped – it was a combined effort. “A life threatening situation had been prevented thanks to our wonderful lifeguards and of course the caring public. As the lifeguards walked back to their station the whole of the beach applauded them.”

Google’s offices raided THE SPANISH offices of the giant internet company Google have been raided as part of a tax investigation. by Caroline Tyszka The raid in Madrid came after authorities suspected the giant company was not declaring its economic activity in Spain, and focuses on VAT payments. The company has come under increasing pressure within Europe over its financial dealings, this investigation coming just weeks after its Paris offices were raided in a separate case. Google has insisted that it pays all taxes it owes in Spain. A spokesman said: “We comply with Spanish tax laws just as we do in all countries where we operate. “We are co-operating with the authorities in Spain in order to answer all their questions, as always. We comply with Spanish tax laws just as we do in all countries where we operate.” The Paris offices were searched by around 100 investigators as part of a year-long probe into tax fraud last month. The company’s French operation has been accused of not paying up to €1.6bn (£1.3bn) in French taxes, although it also says it abides by the law. Last year, Google agreed to pay the UK Treasury £130m in back taxes following extensive criticism of its UK tax arrangements.

Iraq in mourning

IRAQ STAGED three days of mourning this week following the terrorist attack in Baghdad on Sunday that killed at least 170 people. Following the deadliest single attack in the Iraqi capital this year the Prime Minister Haider al Abadi vowed that the perpetrators will be punished. The Islamic State terrorist group has claimed that it was responsible after a suicide bomber drove a truck loaded with explosives to an area where families and young people filled the streets after breaking their Ramadan fast. Officials say that at least fifteen children were amongst the dead and 225 were wounded, some of whom are in a critical condition.

Spain will not be taxing the sun the rumours circulating a few years ago about the Spanish government wanting to tax people who installed solar systems were actually true at the time. This is now not the case. You can install solar without any fear of being taxed. Keith the owner operator of solardirecta explains a little further. Ban on sale of animals THE SPANISH government is considering changing the law and banning the sale of animals in pet shops. by Caroline Tyszka THE PSOE, Ciudadanos and Podemos parties have put forward a proposal where anyone wishing to buy a pet should have to select it from a catalogue provided by breeders, who have legal permits and inspections. The intention is to reduce impulsive purchases because after a period of time many animals are being abandoned - often because they are a financial burden or the owner had not thought about the care level required - a rising problem for the country. There will be many people who feel the change is long overdue, however, opponents to the planned bill are concerned about the impact this would have on pet stores and small businesses.

A different class JAVEA ARTISTS Brigitte Schemmer and Maggie Morgan met “a long time ago” at Spanish classes and have remained friends ever since. They have both lived in the Marina Alta town for 15 years and shared a summer exhibition last weekend, Brigitte’s ceramics and Maggie’s collages and paintings proved a popular attraction for an international audience and both sold pieces. The venue was Brigitte’s workshop in Javea Old Town – rented from a ‘penya’, which uses the space for 15 days a year, and also where she stages her classes. “We have known each other a long time, back from when we met at Spanish classes,” said Brigitte. “We decided it was a good opportunity for a short exhibition before classes start again.”

Unlike humans, who have the ability to sweat through all of our skin, dogs release heat through their paw pads and by panting. For many domestic animals dehydration can be a big problem. According to the ASPCA, animals with flat faces—like Pugs and Persian cats—cannot pant as effectively, and are therefore more susceptible to heat stroke. Owners should also keep an eye on elderly or overweight pets or animals with heart and lung disease. It is vital to make sure pets have access to plenty of fresh, cool water, and avoid letting them run around outside during the hottest parts of the day. And one big problem with the heat is the temperature of the ground, with surfaces retaining high temperatures. Many dogs have to be treated for burns on their paw pads as owners simply don not think to check how hot the ground is before venturing out for a stroll. A simple rule to protect your pet from this excruciating pain is, if you cannot walk bare foot then neither can they. Check a pet regularly for bugs and consult a local vet about the best way to protect them from fleas, ticks and other insects which are more prevalent during the summer months. Some pets, particularly those with short fine hair or pink skin, can be susceptible to sunburn. Again a vet can advise of a suitable sunscreen. Do not use products that have not been recommended by a professional, some protective creams used by humans can cause drooling, vomiting, diarrhoea, excessive thirst and lethargy in pets. A final piece of advice is water safety. Many pets love to jump into the pool to cool down but getting out may not be as easy. Always keep a close eye on animals when they are in the water and consider buying a ‘doggie life preserver’ if there are plans to go out on a boat – they may not be as strong a swimmer as people think. Treat a pet the same as a small child during the summer months but always consult a vet over any health concerns.

THOUSANDS OF teachers in the UK staged a 24 hour strike on Tuesday over cuts in funding. Teachers joined rallies and marches across the country to demand an increase in funding for schools and education, leaving many working parents struggling to get someone to care for their children. The National Union of Teachers said schools are facing ‘the worst cuts in funding since the 1970s’ and accuse the government of “damaging” the education system. Kevin Courtney, from the NUT, said teachers had not taken strike action “lightly”, but considered the problems facing education “too great to ignore”. He said: “The strike is about the under funding of our schools and the negative impact it is having on children’s education and teachers’ terms and conditions.” And the union has written to Education Secretary Nicky Morgan to call for “meaningful” discussions to tackle issues it claims are damaging education.

Footballer sentenced for tax fraud THE BARCELONA striker Lionel Messi has been sentenced to 21 months in prison for tax fraud. The Argentinian international player, along with his father Jorge, were both found guilty of using overseas companies to avoid paying taxes on 4.16 million euros of the footballer’s income which had been earnt during 2007 and 2009 from image rights. The hearing on Wednesday also handed down the same sentence to Messi senior and they were fined 3.7 million euros. Messi’s father had managed his 29 year old son’s finances for many years but the footballer told the court that he had always trusted his father to deal with any investments and had no idea how these had been managed. Whilst prosecutors had asked for Messi to be absolved, arguing there was no evidence the player was aware of how his income was managed, the authorities decided that he must have somehow been aware of the situation. During the original investigation into the fraud in 2013 the father and son made a voluntary payment of 5 million euros to cover the unpaid taxes and interest. The pair will appeal against the court’s decision - although neither were expected to serve time in prisonas under the Spanish legal system prison terms of under two years can be served on probation.

What should I do in case of a car accident? Summer is now here in beautiful, sunny Spain. With temperatures soaring it’s a great feeling, although a tad hot at times for all expats that live and work in this tranquilo environment; tranquilo that is until the influx of tourists from many countries around the world especially from Britain and the rest of Europe. Now, more than other times during the year, one needs to be even more careful than ever on the roads. With all these extra cars and drivers, who are perhaps more used to driving on the left, an increase in the risk of traffic accidents is inevitable. Always make sure your tyre pressures are correct by checking them at least once a month. Also check your car’s radiator level is topped up; the last thing you want is to overheat and have to wait for a breakdown truck on the edge of a busy motorway! It’s also illegal to run out of screen wash, so make sure this is topped up too. And driving with flip-flops or shoes with no back is not permitted either. Needless to say, seat belts must be worn all round, and young children need safety harnesses. Using mobile phones are a definite no no, INCLUDING texting, which is probably worse than speaking. Should the unthinkable happen, here are some tips that everyone, from a new driver to an experienced one, should remember in the case of an accident: • Stay calm and wear the reflective vest • Get to a safe area near the accident scene, turn on your emergency flashers and use the two triangles • Make sure everyone is okay and call 112, if necessary • When it is safe, take pictures of the vehicles involved, damage, road signs, etc. • Get statements and contact information from any witnesses

• Complete the accident report: write down the other driver’s licence number, insurance details, vehicle information and phone number. Missing pets by Jack Troughton THREE WELL-CARED for dogs are being looked after by Jalon Valley ARC after being found by animal lovers and taken to the charity. The three pooches – two small black dogs found on El Collado, Lliber, and a brown-haired dog discovered on Jalon’s La Solana – are all in good condition and are believed to be missing pets. However, none of them has a chip or was wearing a collar and ARC is appealing for anyone who might recognise them to help put the charity in touch with the owners. In the mean time, the two black dogs have been named ‘Nellie’ and ‘Nora’, and the brown dog ‘Penny’. If they are not claimed, they will be offered for adoption in a few weeks’ time. Anyone who can help reunite the dogs with their families is asked to call Jayne on 649 310 285 or pop into the ARC Charity Shop in Jalon between 10am and 1.30pm Monday to Saturday.

Pistorius sentenced to six years by Caroline Tyszka THE SOUTH African Olympic and Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius was sentenced to a further six years in prison for the murder of his girlfriend n Wednesday. Judge Thozokile Masipa’s decision in Pretoria followed a three-day court hearing and days of deliberation, as impact statements from the accused and family members of the victim Reeva Steenkamp were considered. Pistorius was accused of murdering his girlfriend in February 2013 and initially found guilty of culpable homicide, serving one year of a fiveyear sentence before being released under house arrest conditions at a property owned by his uncle. In December 2015 the prosecution had the judgement overturned by South Africa’s Supreme Court and judges then found him guilty of murder. Although he faced a sentence of up to fifteen years the judge stated that “substantial and compelling” reasons meant that a six year sentence was appropriate. The former athlete showed little emotion, but looked relieved as he was immediately led away to begin his imprisonment. “The judgment is an insult to women. It sends the wrong message,” said Jacqui Mofokeng of the African National Congress women’s league, who has attended much of the trial and was in court for the judgement.

Cluedo kills character

IN ITS own case of “who dunnit?”, the game Cluedo has a new look and although five characters get to keep their names they have had a style revamp. Only one character has remained unchanged – Colonel Mustard – in the classic board game which has entertained families since 1923 Mrs White, the housekeeper of Dr Black, has been retired and replaced with Dr Orchid, who is described as being privately educated in Switzerland until a “near-fatal daffodil poisoning incident.” Hasbro, owners of the game, said that it had taken the decision to kill off Mrs White, the first since 1949, because: “After 70 years of suspicious activity, we decided that one of the characters had to go.”

Rolex snatched by Caroline Tyszka PENSIONERS KEITH and Christine White are warning people to be on their guard after falling victim to professional muggers in a busy Costa Blanca car park. They were getting into their car when Keith was approached by an emotional woman appealing for help – taking his left hand in both hers, removed his valuable £6,900 Rolex watch. They were able to identify the thief to the Guardia Civil, an officer showing the pair a set of nine ‘mug shots’ and saying: “Yes, I thought it would be her”. Speaking at their Moraira home, they said the robbery took place on the busy public car park adjoining the Espai de Senieta on Tuesday 28th June. “This old car came up behind us,” said Christine. “The driver said he wanted to know how to get to Mercadona...I smelt a rat and told our friend to shut the car door; fortunately my handbag was already in the boot...this woman was already out talking to Keith.” And Keith said: “It was almost like being suffocated. She went for my left hand

and had both hands around my watch and was appealing to me in a foreign language.” Christine added the drama was over in seconds. “She was obviously undoing his watch while looking into his face and sounding as if she was in a terrible state – she got back into the car, which shot off.” They said at the local Guardia Civil sta-

tion a list of suspects was sent through – after identifying the suspect, officers changed into plain clothes in a bid to catch the thieves but without success. The couple has lived in Spain since 1983 and have fallen victim to street crime before. Christine added: “She certainly knew her job...but they probably don’t know what the watch is worth; fortunately it is insured.”

Balcony fall Brit makes it home A British holidaymaker who fell seven storeys from an apartment balcony in Benidorm and survived has now arrived safely back in the UK. by Caroline Tyszka Neil Ellerington, 44 and from Hull, fell on the 8th June and suffered multiple injuries. Because of the severity of his injuries he was put into an induced coma for a short period to allow his body to cope with the trauma. He spent the next few weeks in Villajoyosa hospital before being transferred by road ambulance on Sunday back to the UK by Multi Health Medical Services. They made a 1,400 mile round trip to collect him and return him to his partner and two children waiting patiently at home. Barbara Mann, Neil’s mother, thanked everyone who had raised funds to help get her son home safely. “The expat community, the ambulance team, friends and family have all been amazing” she told RTN, “it has been an overwhelming experience, the accident was bad obviously but the expats in Spain have been amazing.” Getting Neil home wasn’t all plain sailing with assistance from the British Consulate before he could leave required and problems with the channel tunnel toll booths delaying the journey slightly - but on Monday at 6.15 am he was repatriated and admitted to Hull’s Royal Infirmary. Many expats helped get Neil home, raising funds on a crowd funding page and offering accommodation to the family when they were in Benidorm on their forced extended visit.

Winds beach sailors STRONG WAVES and wind beached a sailboat at the weekend in Altea. Rented by a group of six young people from Alcoy, it got into trouble on Sunday afternoon. Strong waves are believed to have dragged the boat and its passengers towards the shoreline. No one was injured, but the boat suffered significant damage and had to be towed away by a crane later in the day.

Earth is healing

THE HOLE in the ozone over the Antarctic is starting to heal and getting smaller, researchers from the United States and United Kingdom have found. The new study announced in magazine ‘Science’ describes the ‘cure’ as a triumph of international cooperation over a man-made environmental problem – the ozone layer was “eaten away” by chemicals used in aerosols and refrigerants. Ozone is a combination of oxygen atoms high in the earth’s atmosphere and shields the planet from harmful ultraviolet rays – which can cause cancer. Scientists discovered the hole has shrunk by a fifth – an area three times the size of Texas. It is expected to completely close by around the mid-century. Susan Solomon, who was the lead author of the study, said the healing process began much earlier than scientists predicted. “It isn’t that the patient is in remission, he’s actually starting to get better. The patient got very sick in the 80’s when we were pumping all that chlorine into the air.” And she believes the success “is a tremendous cause for home” as humans look to find a remedy for other environmental problems, such as man-made climate change. The ozone layer is between six to 30 miles high – 10 to 50 kilometres – and was attacked by chemicals known as chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs, which broke down into chlorine and attacked ozone. In 1987, a global treaty, the Montreal Protocol was signed after earth’s “gaping wound” grabbed public attention. The CFCs were phased out as companies developed less harmful products – scientists say there is a feeling of ‘mission accomplished’ as a result.

Do you know which reference interest rate your mortgage has? Is it an abusive IRPH? Most people have a mortgage. Usually they have a variable interest rate, which in most cases is referred to the EURIBOR, the most common interest index or rate of reference in Spain. However, in some mortgages the interest rate of reference is not the EURIBOR, it is the Index of Reference of Mortgage Loans or IRPH, today it is known as the IRPH of all entities, which takes into account the loan interests agreed by all financial institutions. The main problem is that although most consumers are unaware of it, the IRPH is and has always been much higher than the Euribor, in fact at the time of writEuribor is -0.03%, and IRPH of all entities is + 1.89%, so it is 1.92% higher.

The IRPH is an official index and is legal, but, as happens with the mortgage floor (suelo) clauses, they were included in many consumerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mortgages without their knowing it, resulting in major economic losses because they pay much more than if their mortgage had been referenced to Euribor. It is essential to know whether the consumer when signing the mortgage was informed of the existence of several benchmarks or mortgage interests rate or indexes, and the consequences of choosing one or the other, etc. So if you have a mortgage and despite the general decline in interest rates, you are still paying a high interest, then you may be affected by a mortgage floor clause, or by the IRPH, or both. If you were not informed correctly about the interest index of your mortgage, if no one explained the different options, the possible consequences, you could request that the IRPH be declared null and void, for being abusive. In this sense, the court decision of the Provincial Court of Alicante number 309/2015, although ruling against the consumer, confirmed that the IRPH clauses are subject to a transparency control, its validity depends on whether the consumer has had an adequate knowledge before signing the mortgage of their economic and legal consequences, the same as applies for mortgage floor clauses. There are many court precedents that have declared IRPH null and void, like the Court decision of the Provincial Court of Vitoria, Section 1, granted on the 10/03/2016, of the court case number 248/2015 of the Commercial Court No. 2 of Murcia, etc. The clauses stating that the interest to be paid will depend on the IRPH will not always be declared null and void, but if you are affected by this type of interest, and you were not conveniently informed by the bank, legally you have the ability to claim for its nullity, and the refund of all interest overpaid, which are usually very high amounts. Crystal Ball v Common Sense During the last couple of weeks there seem to have been more financial experts coming out of the woodwork telling what is going to happen in every scenario. It is early days but it appears following the vote for Brexit that some of them were right but actually most of them were in fact wrong. All of the above tells me one thing, NOBODY REALLY KNOWS WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN! I have been advising on investments for going on 30 years now and the Best piece of advice I would give anyone is DIVERSIFY, DIVERSIFY and DIVERSIFY. Do not put all your hard earned money in one place on the basis of being told about an amazing opportunity. There are 5 main assets in which to diversify: Cash, Property, Bonds (Government & Corporate), Equities and Commodities. • Cash is in the form of Bank accounts, Interest bearing accounts, Gilts even Premium Bonds. • Property can be in the form of the home where you live or a property you own and rent out, there is also commercial property or investment funds that specialise in Property. These can become illiquid. • Bonds - Government & Corporate, usually low risk but that can mean low return. • Equities are basically shares or funds that invest in the markets and companies • Commodities, there are commodity funds or you can buy tangible items like Gold, Oil or even crops. The ideal portfolio will cover some or all of the above, depending on your Risk Profile and for someone living in Spain originally from the UK, you might consider having your assets split between Sterling and Euro to help avoid currency risk. Diversification is really just common sense, as a reasonable spread of assets will potentially limit exposure to crashes and/or volatility during uncertain times. Following the Brexit, Cash and Property look to be being adversely affected whereas Equities are holding (though some sectors like banking and construction have fared worse than others) and some Commodities, like Gold which is seen as a safe haven , has seen both demand for and its price increase. I have taken on clients over the years who had put all their

eggs in one basket and suffered as a consequence. There are opportunities out there so try to mitigate risk and go for modest returns. Do not be greedy over the short term and remember: DIVERSIFY as much as possible within your Risk category. A spoonful of sugar by Jack Troughton JAVEA PLAYERS continued its 40th anniversary celebrations with an ‘everyone welcome’ knees up and a sing-a-long summer show, a tribute to superstar Julie Andrews. The fun started last Saturday with the party in Plaza Baix in Javea’s Old Town – pictured cutting the birthday cake is Javea Mayor Jose Chulvi with the theatre group’s Chairman Mike Harvey. And special guests were David, Andrew and Jessica, the children of Javea Players’ founder Janet Phillips, who flew out especially for the celebrations. In 1976, Janet appealed to fellow expats for anyone interested in starting an amateur drama group – 12 people turned up. Sadly, Janet died suddenly before the curtain up before the first show in May that year; but the double bill ‘Murder by Request’ and ‘Meet the Family’ went ahead. It was the first of three productions in the first year...the rest is history. One woman show ‘Truly Andrews’ was performed in the Casa de Cultura this week by the talented Aimi Percival, an enjoyable – and easy to digest - look at the success and life story of the silver-tongued star Julie. It followed the traditional ‘al fresco’ dinner in Plaza Baix and from the start both Aimi and her audience were in fine voice. With a minimum of props, Aimi ran through a selection of songs from the musicals that make up the Andrews’ hall of fame – a quick ‘greatest hits’ from The Boyfriend, My Fair Lady, Mary Poppins, and (naturally) The Sound of Music. Aimi is pictured by Benny Davis singing ‘Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’ as Dick Van Dyke, from Mary Poppins and complete with ‘mockney’ accent.

It is a pity that so much garden water is wasted Entering the hottest time of the year it is unfortunate that many reservoirs that supply house water are at low levels and many natural springs that supplied water for agricultural use for centuries are now dry due to several years of low rain fall. No doubt many readers reaction to the continuing drought will have been to water more frequently and perhaps turn up the pressure so that the surface of the soil receives more water per minute. I say the soil receives rather than plants receive for in many cases the plants in your garden actually use up very little of your irrigation water, whether you are watering via an irrigation system, hose , watering can or just waiting patiently for the rain. Much of the water is in fact lost or wasted for the following reasonsMost rain water, when it rains, is not collected stored or distributed effectively around the garden. 1. Water runs away from plants across bone dry hard surfaced soil. 2. Water is lost by evaporation from the upper levels of the soil. 3. During dry weather water is sucked sideways by the surrounding soil acting like a dry sponge. 4. In poor soils much water drains quickly down through the soil away from the growing roots. 5. Rain water is not channelled to thirsty plants, bushes and trees. 6. Rain or surplus irrigation water is allowed to run off your land onto adjacent properties. 7. Drought resistant plants are co-planted with thirsty plants so they receive too much water. 8. Many drought resistant plants, shrubs and trees are still being watered years after they established a deep root structure. 9. Short lived thirsty plants are planted up and planted daily. Unfortunately using more irrigation water to help gardens survive is impossible in some areas as restrictions on garden and agricultural water

needs are already imposed in some areas. But it possible to develop and maintain beautiful and productive gardens with considerably less watering. It was recognising this that led me a few years ago to compile the book titled â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;How to use less water in your garden â&#x20AC;&#x201C; A practical guide to waterwise Mediterranean style gardeningâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. This is a compilation of some 300 possible actions and a list of some 250 of the most drought resistant plans for Spanish gardens is included.. If you are worried about the amount of water re-

quired to grow summer vegetables start to grow them where they are only in full sun for half the day and in black plastic builders-buckets. Before sowing seeds or planting plantlets fill the buckets half full with well-rotted manures and then fill up the top half with a water retaining but well-draining rich soil/compost mix. Hi Aunty My problem relates to Microsoft Word 2013 where every time I open a New Blank Document the curser automatically starts in the centre of the page. I have tried every thing I can think of even to uninstalling office completely cleaning the system of all files and then reinstalling the program. I still have the same even after I installed a new version of Microsoft Office 2016. I know I must be leaving a file behind when uninstalling but, I just cannot find it or which setting in Word I need to change as I just do not know what has changed to cause this problem. HELP! Reply: I would suggest that somehow your template has been changed and saved. So every time you open Word, the changed template is being used rather than the original. Normal.dotm is the template upon which all new blank documents are based. It opens whenever you start Microsoft Office Word 2013 and it includes default styles and customizations that control the basic look of your document. Changes you make to Normal.dotm will be applied to documents that you create in the future. If you delete normal.dotm, the next time you open Word it will look for the file, and when it canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t find it Word will recreate the file in its original default condition. There are many ways to locate normal.dotm, but if you are in Word 2013, the easiest way is to click the File tab > Open > Computer > Browse.

Open Browse Then, navigate to C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates. You should see Normal.dotm in the list. Rename it to something else (just in case), or delete it. The restart Word and you should have a new template created. And hope fully all will be back to normal.

Before we got married, my Fiance had always kept himself trim. We’ve been married for 8 months now, and he is carrying a few extra pounds. I was initially drawn to him for his physique, but now he regularly brings home takeaways, and is drinking more beer. How can I tell him about it without upsetting him? Contentment after getting married, is a common occurrence. You could try dropping hints, but you might need to be more direct. Tell him that takeaways aren’t that healthy, and you have noticed that he is putting on a few pounds. A treat every now and again is fine, but it’s a slippery slope once you start eating these types of foods regularly. One or two pounds are easy to lose, but one or two stones are not. That’s when it becomes really difficult to shed the excess weight. You could always say that you want to lose a few pounds yourself (even if you don’t), and suggest you both go on a bit of a diet, and take up some exercise together.

He can’t forget her My partner and I are both widowed. I am very happy, and every day with him is wonderful, except for one day of the year when my partner insists on spending the anniversary of his wife’s death, on his own. This upsets me greatly, and I find myself feeling very jealous of his late wife. He just leaves the house and comes back without telling me where he’s been. My marriage wasn’t great - I loved my husband in my own way, but I don’t feel I need to commemorate his passing every year. You’ve both lost your spouse, and everyone grieves differently. Your marriage wasn’t so great, but his may have been different. You’ve both been lucky enough to find love again. You could try telling him how you feel, and at least then your feelings will be out in the open, but I think you should be very gracious here, and grant him this time alone. It’s only one day of the year, and perhaps you could do something enjoyable on that day, so that you are not sitting at home dwelling.

SKIP ARCHIMEDES continues his lifestyle tips to help look and feel younger with an easy to follow idea – drink more water. Two weeks ago, he introduced RTN readers to his ‘Green Lean Power Juice’. He said: “I very rarely go a day without having a live juice and when I don’t, I really notice the difference; so please keep up the juicing. “But I’d like to give you another tip that’s even easier to do than making a juice. Most of us are dehydrated which can cause a bunch of problems that we then have to deal with. We can lose 50% of our protein and be fine; we can lose 50% of our glucose and be fine, if we lose 20% of our water we literally die. “So being hydrated is essential for our well-being. We know nowadays that most teas and coffees have a dehydrating effect on the body and mind; whilst flooding it with acid which can have even more negative effects. “Starting your day with these won’t give you the best start - your mind is mostly water and the only thing that can hydrate the brain is water. If you start your day with a quarter to half a lemon freshly squeezed into a big glass of water, you’ll ‘break’ your ‘fast’, that’s where the word ‘breakfast’ comes from, with something that hydrates and alkalizes you.” And he said continuing to drink water for the rest of the day “will keep you focused and functioning well. It may sound simple, but don’t under estimate the power of this simple tip”. What is bad is to brush things under the carpet, or even worse to pretend that all is well, when you know very well that it isn’t! That hurts. Externalise what you have to say and don’t hold onto it, even if you think that someone won’t like what you have to say. Feel free to express things the way that they are and know that release does help. I promise you!!

Exploring Albufera By Jack Troughton MEMBERS OF Xabia Book Circle enjoyed discovering the Albufera at El Palmar as the group headed off on its summer outing. They found the village of El Palmar, near Valencia, to be an oasis of peace and tranquillity where time stands still. The party embarked on a 9km trip around the Albufera lake in a traditional boat. The Albufera is a freshwater lagoon and estuary hosting a wealth of more than 350 species of birds and a rich variety of flora and fauna. The group was also able to see a traditional, high-peaked thatched fisherman’s cottage known as a ‘barraca’; a design that dates back hundreds of years. The boat trip was “relaxing, refreshing and a total delight” and once safely back on dry land, lunch was enjoyed in the excellent El Palmar restaurant, featuring its signature dish, paella - prepared with ingredients grown in the vegetable gardens that surround the wetlands.

Friends enjoy dinner FRIENDS OF Javea Museum – AMUX – staged a celebration to welcome the arrival of summer at the historic Riu Rau d’Arnauda in the Old Town. After eating dinner together, they welcomed the traditional folk dancing group Dances Portichol.

Angels at the zoo

GUARDIAN ANGELS, the Costa Blanca charity supporting single parents, enjoyed its annual day out at Benidorm’s Terra Natura. Thirteen parents and their youngsters enjoyed a “fantastic day out” at the animal theme park – and it was an opportunity for

the adults to meet, make friends and build a support network. The children were also quick to make friends – and enjoy watching the animals. U3A attracts groupies VOLUNTEERS WHO help run more than 37 groups or ‘front of house’ for U3A Denia were treated to an enjoyable lunch together at Cafe Amazing, in Denia’s Marquis de Campo. The meal was a ‘thank you’ to the people who help the association be so successful, with over 740 English-speaking members. Annual membership is 6€ a year and gives access to existing groups such as walking, travel, quiz nights, racquetball, and petanque. Three new group leaders have just added ukulele, music appreciation and Salsa and Latin dance classes and social evenings to the varied interests on offer. Boost for kids’ home By Jack Troughton

YOUNGSTERS CARED for at the El Preventorio de Real de Gandia can look forward to improvements in the classroom and kitchen thanks to Freemasons of Arenal Lodge. Members of the lodge visited the home to present another cheque for 1,600€ to the Preventorio’s Director Maria Jose Castello – who thanked the lodge for its support over the past two years. The money has been used to buy an electronic whiteboard for the home’s attached school, and a freezer for the kitchen – allowing cooks to store, prepare, and cook food for the youngsters. RTN was told: “It is always a pleasure to visit the home and see how things are progressing. Visitors are always very impressed with the skill and caring of all the staff. Although it is sad that such a facility needs to exist, the children are very lucky to be able to attend and get the benefits of so much love and affection; along with a much better education than they might otherwise have received.” The lodge raised the money through a successful quiz night, various raffles, and its annual Ladies Night.

U3A’s party people OLIVA U3A welcomed 117 members and guests to its End of Year Party at the Moli Canyar in Potries where a good time was enjoyed by all. The party started with a Cava reception in the beau-

tiful gardens, where everyone could meet and make new friends; this was followed by the main party in the Salon where everyone tucked into an excellent six-course meal with drinks. And the party was kick-started by the entertainment for the evening, popular duo Timewarp, insuring everyone danced the night away.

Bedding down

OLD FOLK at a ‘residencia’ in Pedregeur can look forward to a good night’s sleep thanks to Jalon Valley HELP and its supporters. The charity visited Fundacio Residencia Senora del Carmen to donate a hospital bed and new bedding – part of its regular support of the good cause that is committed to caring for the sick and elderly. The Anemona charity, helping breast cancer sufferers in Benidorm, were having their annual fundraiser when Gary from Giving4Giving presented them with the donation. Gary said: “We heard that Anemona were having their fundraiser and wanted to give them the 1,000 euros to help them continue to provide the much needed services that they offer.” The G4G charity has now donated 51,000 euros and hopes that by the end of 2016 this will be 60,000. Who said there´s no love in Hollywood? Kate Hudson is the daughter of Goldie Hawn and Bill Hudson who was part of the musical-comedy trio The Hudson Brothers. However in the early 80´s the couple divorced and shortly after that Goldie and Kurt Russell became an item, but they have never married with Goldie saying “we just love being with each other and see no need to add anything to that,”… how cool is that!

Kate was out and about last week promoting cartoon feature film ´Kung Fu Panda 3, ´ in which she voices ribbon-dancing panda Mei Mei, and whilst speaking to Wonderwall.com revealed how much she loved 1981 Disney cartoon ´The Fox and the Hound. Kate said while listing the movies she adored during her childhood, “it’s funny because when I was a little girl and I didn’t realize that Kurt , my dad, was a voice in The Fox and the Hound.” Yes Kate and actor brother Oliver Hudson both refer to Kurt Russell as dad, with Kate vocalising how deep the bond goes by saying “This is a man who made his family his number one priority his whole life, he never missed a school play, a soccer game, a hockey game, a dance recital, the list goes on and on. No matter what he was doing in his busy life, he always showed up. Not because he had to, but because there was no other place on earth he would rather be than with his family. We felt the purity of that our whole childhood and my gratitude for his love is immeasurable,” … Wow! These words deeply moved me when I first read them … and they´ve just got me again. Kate was just 2 years old when ´The Fox and The Hound´ came out, so it’s no surprise she has only recently found out her ´Dad´ voiced the adult hound in the movie, as I´m sure the family didn´t sit round the fire with their cup of cocoa and dunking their digestives whilst discussing all the movies they´ve been in. Kate spoke of the other animated movies she loved saying “When I was little, ‘Cinderella’ was the big one; I also liked ‘Bedknobs and Broomsticks,’ and ‘The Never Ending Story,’ my generation wasn’t fully animated, I loved the world of half animation.” And we´re all loving you Kate. Walt Disney´s house in Chicago is currently being fully restored and 90 year old Dick Van Dyke took the opportunity to mark the occasion with an impromptu singalong in the front garden. Nicolas DeGrazia posted a video on Facebook with the caption: ‘He marches out on the steps of Walt Disney’s birthplace and says “Hi! I’m what’s left of Dick Van Dyke!’ Then he busts out laughing.” Excellent! Although Dick was slated for his dodgy cockney accent in Mary Poppins he led the crowd singing ´Let’s Go Fly a Kite´ from the movie. Video maker Nicholas said “the guy is 90 years old and running around and skipping with a huge smile on his face, amazing,’ Dick’s definitely still got it. British comedian/actor Simon Pegg recently appeared on The One Show to promote the Star Trek: Beyond. The interview was going great with Simon oozing his natural charm, and showing why he is getting so much work of late, Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation alongside Tom Cruise an example. He said “It’s a timely movie as Idris Elba, who plays Krall, is a sort of anti-federationist, he doesn’t like the idea of the federation, he hates the idea of all these planets working together in harmony, and sort of moving forward,” he then paused before adding “so the villain of Star Trek: Beyond is basically Boris Johnson!” Mr Ling tweeted ´I nearly drowned in my cuppa when he said that! Boris brought down a peg or three there.

When Coldplay were booked to play Glastonbury this year peeps said at the time ´we want our money back´ and ´I´ve not bought a ticket to go fall asleep.´ I´m sure this information filtered back to singer Chris Martin and the group, as they pulled off the smartest of moves by getting Barry Gibb to join them onstage to do a few tunes and what a winner it proved to be. Before you watch the video let me tell you what´s happened since Barry did the show. The legendary Bee Gee has sealed a deal with Columbia Records and will release his first album with them, ´In The Now´ later this year. Barry said ‘This is a dream come true for me. Daniel Radcliffe was born in Fulham, London and broke into movies in the most spectacular way when he was just 10 years old. He´s now played Harry Potter eight times and with a five year gap opening up since his last ´Potter´ outing it would seem the franchise is done and dusted. Speaking to the Radio Times on playing our favourite wizard again he said “It would depend on the script, the circumstances would have to be pretty extraordinary, but then I´m sure Harrison Ford said that with Han Solo and look what happened there!” On his well-documented problems with alcohol Daniel also said “my drinking was from a fear of having to return to reality after the films ended,” heartfelt stuff indeed. Hands up those who want Daniel back as a wizard? Jeff Lynne and Electric Light Orchestra played the Sunday afternoon Legends slot at Glastonbury, but it nearly didn´t happen. Jeff was flown in by helicopter, and on the thousands of people he saw below said “when I saw the whole thing I couldn’t believe it, I was like, ‘let’s turn round quick, there’s too many people!’ I couldn’t really handle it.” Jeff was of course able to calm his nerves to perform one of the sets of the weekend. “Once we got on it was fabulous. It was just a great end to an amazing tour. Fish soup Ingredients 1 small bulb of fennel 1 leek 3 sticks of celery 1 fresh red chilli 4 cloves of garlic 3-4 tomatoes 1 bunch of fresh thyme 440 g white fish, from sustainable sources olive oil 1 small glass of white wine 400 g prawns, mussels or clams, from sustainable sources extra virgin olive oil Method 1. Trim and finely chop the fennel, leek, celery and chilli, and peel and finely chop the garlic. Roughly chop the tomatoes, pick the thyme leaves and chop the fish into chunks. 2. Gently cook the fennel, leek, celery, most of the chilli and the garlic in olive oil over a medium heat, until soft. 3. Add 1 litre water and the wine, bring to the boil, then reduce heat and simmer until vegetables are cooked. 4. Add the tomatoes, thyme and fish. When fish turns opaque, add the prawns, mussels or clams and simmer for 2 minutes until prawns are cooked and mussels are open. 5. Season and serve with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and a scattering of fresh chilli.

Our english accent Part two

I hope you have spent the last week doing your mouth exercises, including that “tr” sound at the front of your mouth which is one of those give away differences between a Spanish and an English accent. I mentioned at the end of the last article that there is another important difference between English and Spanish pronunciation, and that is what we are going to concentrate on today. The basic issue lies in the fact that in the English language we pronounce things very differently from the way we think we pronounce them. In particular we alter sounds and also insert sounds to make words link together more easily, and we are generally completely unaware of doing it. There are many examples of this, in fact it is a huge subject of study in itself, but here are a few examples of what I mean.

Let’s start with two of the most basic words in English “I” and “am”. When we put these two words together, we either contract them to “I’m”, or we insert an extra sound. Say “I am” to yourself at a normal speed and you may well find you are actually saying “I-y-am” (inserting the “y” sound). We need go no further than “you are” to find another example, but with a different sound inserted. “You are” said normally sounds like “you-w-are”, in other words we insert the “w” sound. The reason why we insert a “y” in one case and a “w” in the other is to do with the shape of our mouths at the particular moment of speech. Now think of this little phrase “law and order”. Do you really say what you read, or does it sound more like “law-r-and order”, inserting a “r” sound?

Going back to our verb “to be” for a moment – what sound to you say between “he is”? and another thought – how to do you say “drawing” – the chances are that most, if not all the readers of this article actually say “draw-r-ing”. Now all these sounds probably sound completely natural and normal to us; in fact, it is possible that you cannot hear them unless you really concentrate, as we make them completely unconsciously.

You may think that these are subtle differences, and in a way they are, but these are the things that give us our unmistakable accent and at times can make us difficult to understand. As a final thought – put yourself in the position of a Spanish person trying to understand you when you say you have lost your “hambag”. Yes, we do some very strange things with words – it was only Lady Bracknell who ever said “h-a-n-d-ba-g” properly.

The problem is that, equally unconsciously, we bring these “sound insertions” into our pronunciation of Spanish. Here is one example that I hear quite often. When we say numbers, for example “treinta y uno”, I often hear students saying “treinta-ry-uno”. When I correct them they usually have trouble hearing what I am correcting! The same mistake goes for all the numbers, obviously. We also get caught out with vowel combinations like “ea” and “ae”. These are “pure” vowels which move straight from one to the other, whereas we tend to put a “y” sound in between. When I had a language academy in the north of Spain I had a secretary called “Bea” (short for Beatriz). At first I called her “Bella” or “Beya”, unconsciously inserting a “y” sound in her name. When she first corrected me I couldn’t hear the difference between “Bea” and “Bella”. Eventually I could, and realized I had been calling her “beautiful” (bella) instead of her name. The “ae” combination appears in some verbs – for example “to fall” which is “caer”. We should pronounce the “a” followed by the “e” directly, and not put a “y” there – it is not “cayer”.

WHEN WAS THE LAW PASSED that small children on planes sitting behind me are allowed to kick the stuffing out of the back of my seat. What are they doing on the plane in the first place? Haven’t they got chimneys to sweep? No! They are off & away to far flung exotic holiday destinations, thanks to some ‘right on’ judge, saying it’s your incontrovertible human right to take your child out of school during term time to satisfy your own selfish needs. How times have changed (cue Hovis music).All we had was a donkey ride in Rhyl – mind you, dear old Dobbin could get a game for the current England shower. Flying is not for me – it goes back to my time working in the far reaches of Western Australia. At the end of each month we’d fly down to Perth in a twin prop ‘puddle hopper.’ On one such jolly an engine packed up & I freaked out – stuttering to the butch Ozzie type next to me “Hhhhow ffffar can we ffffly on one engine?” Bruce laconically replied, “All the way to the scene of the crash I reckon. Should get there 20 minutes ahead of the flying doctor.” Cheers Cobber – very puckish I’m sure. The worst airline I’ve ever had the misfortune to board was ….....got to be a tad careful here, so I’ll give it to you in anagram form (go on crack it – what else is on your busy agenda?). ‘AILING RADAR USE.’ We flew out of a Far East rinky-dink airport – where they’d lost my luggage before I got on the plane – well I say luggage – more Roy Cropper than Louis Vuitton. Prior to taking to the wide blue yonder, us passengers had to shoo a pack of wild boar off the runway (in case you’ve never confronted a wild boar, you do not shoo. Cat’s you shoo, wild boars just snort, sneer & carry on boaring). While we were down on the tarmac, the pilot got us to check for oil leaks & kick the tyres. Bound for Australia it was obviously the first trip for Captain Clueless – he came on the intercom with this gem “Ladies & Gentlemen. If you look out of the starboard window,that’s the left hand side, no no silly me, the right hand side, always get those 2 mixed up. We are approaching what we think is Australia. Maple smoked ribs Sticky, sweet, savoury, fall off the bone; everything smoked ribs should be. By using both the maple plank and the maple syrup you achieve a deep and unforgettable flavor.

INGREDIENTS 2 lb pork side ribs 1 cup pure maple syrup 3 tbsp frozen orange juice concentrate 3 tbsp ketchup 2 tbsp soy sauce 1 tbsp Dijon mustard 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 1 tsp curry powder 1 clove garlic, minced 2 spring onions, minced 1 tbsp toasted sesame seeds Other Equipment Maple planks DIRECTIONS 1. Soak maple planks in sink or clean bucket filled with water for at least 1 hour. (this can be done during first stage of cooking the ribs) 2. Light one side of your barbecue,

and preheat until temperature gauge shows 350Â°F. Place ribs meat side up in a roasting pan. Cover pan tightly with foil and place on the unlit side of your barbecue. Bake for 1 1/4 hours. This step can also be done in the oven. 3. In a saucepan over MEDIUM heat combine maple syrup, orange juice concentrate, ketchup, soy sauce, mustard and Worcestershire sauce. Stir in curry powder, garlic and spring onions. Simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. 4. Remove ribs from roasting pan, and baste completely meat side and bone side with still warm sauce. Retain 1/2 of sauce for additional basting. Place ribs on soaked maple planks bone side

down. Put the planks with the ribs on them on one side of the barbecue with LOW heat setting directly underneath them. Turn the other side of the barbecue to HIGH and close lid. Keep temperature around 350Â°F. Planks should begin to smoke within a few minutes, and produce a sweet fragrant smoke in your barbecue. Adjust the amount of smoke you would like to add by increasing/ decreasing direct heat underneath the planks, and opening/closing the lid. Do not allow planks to catch fire. Allow ribs to cook on the planks for 25 minutes. Use remaining sauce to baste ribs several times throughout cooking. Remove planks with ribs on them from the grill and place the planks directly on a plate or tray for serving.

Golf Delux

“Adventure-Golf”, something in between normal golf and mini golf, has gotten very popular. Just last year there were almost 30 000 registered players at the Golf Delux golf course in Torre Pacheco. You don’t need to be a pro to play, because this is for both experts and amateurs. It’s been about five years since the Swedish owner Ralf Karlsson got the idea to invest almost 7 million Swedish crowns into the golf course. He placed his trust in and bet on something entirely new in Spain, and has achieved great success. Ralf Karlsson told RTN - I travelled around a lot with my caravan and visited many camping sights which had mini golf courses and a few had adventure golf courses. That gave me the idea of starting something similar in Spain, says Karlson who’s been living in Spain since 2006. He contacted the swedish firm City Golf in Örnsköldsvik, who are specialists at building advanced mini golf courses. Then the next task was to find a suitable building plot in Spain. Golf Deluxe has become quite known to the British, Scandinavians and other Europeans living in the surrounding areas. The yearly record for for the total number of players being 29 600 and with a daily record of 220 players. Adventure golf is an evolved version of mini golf. The course is bigger and there are natural obstacles with small hills, bunkers and such like. Adventure golf is played with the same clubs and balls as mini golf however it is played using normal golf rules. The course has small bunkers and water obstacles. It is a very demanding course to play at and the course record is 38 puts. It is a hard record to beat however some players are very eager to try, some even train 3 times a week, often with their own clubs so that one day they might just beat the record. Almost half of the players are active golf players, Says Karlsson. They compete with themselves or arrange small private tournaments. Golf Deluxe arranges a big tournament every october, but are always willing to help players to challenge themselves or others in a tailored competition. The course is great for all the family and is meant to be for everyone, both adults and children. In July and August the course will be open from 10 am to 10 pm, with food will be available all day. The Las Salinas summer petanca league The league is now finished and we are looking forward to having a few months off in this heat, but that is not say some people will still be practising ready for the winter league, which starts again in October. There has been some surprising results in the last few matches, which has altered the league tables. In division 1 Amigos Belgas 1 finally won the league on the last match of the season. Skoda Fabia Estate WHEN A friend needs a shipment of books collecting from the docks it is extremely convenient that I am testing the new Skoda Fabia Estate.

Athough only a small car, it has a surprisingly large boot, large enough in fact to swallow 1,000 books, once I’ve loaded each of the 13 sizeable and fairly heavy cartons. One of the rear seats has to be pushed down to accommodate two of the cartons but Heidi (2) is quite happy sitting beside them in her car seat. We have started the process of selling our house and although we started throwing out much of the stuff we have accumulated over the years, there has still been enough to fill the Skoda’s boot. That boot is also fitted with an easy to operate cover so that its contents can be hidden from prying eyes. This is truly a versatile vehicle because it is large enough for a family of four with plenty of legroom fore and aft. This Skoda really does rise to most challenges a family will throw its way. One minute it will be a reliable commuter, the next it could carry a kayak or bikes on the roof thanks to its roof bars and then of course it is a useful load-lugger.

Add to this the fact that its tiddly little 1.2-litre petrol engine returns on average around 60mpg. Despite its small engine it is still quite swift reaching 60mph from standstill in just 9.6secs, going on to a 124mph top speed. Not so long ago you would never have thought ‘It feels like an Audi,’ but it does because not only does it look classy with its clean lines and attractive design it feels well put together and there’s a good quality interior. I am testing the SE L version, which comes with a list of features as long as your arm, including 16 inch alloy wheels, acoustic rear parking sensors, black roof rails and tyre pressure monitoring. This model only has electric front windows which means that the little urchins in the rear can wind the windows down. Designing a car interior is a difficult thing to do successfully because it needs to be hardwearing but also comfortable and sophisticated if it is ever going to woo a buyer. It is always interesting to see what new ideas designers come up with and what is carried over from other vehicles. There is brushed aluminium on the dashboard, a growing fashion, particularly in Audis. There are plenty of cubbyholes and pockets for odds and ends, but the little rubbish bin the driver’s door

with its tiny sandwich bag sized bin bag is, in my opinion, taking things a little bit too far. Whether I would use the little pockets on the side of the front seats to store pens or not, I am not sure. They might be handy for sweets on a long journey but, if forgotten about, the sweets could melt and ruin the upholstery. The black upholstery incorporates funky white patterns that liven it up. What this Skoda scores highly on is its load carrying ability and clever use of storage space; there are even storage compartments under the front seats. I find the six speed manual gearbox generally a decent unit but, on occasions, I do find myself stirring custard. I also find that the cruise control mounted on the stalk to the left of the steering wheel is not one of the more user-friendly I have come across and is pretty fiddly, but it is a competent motorway cruiser and the seats are fairly supportive. “It’s difficult to imagine a better car for a young family than the Skoda Fabia Estate,” writes Parkers, the car experts.
