BRITISH EXPATS across Europe are busy lobbying politicians to voice concerns about life abroad after the historic ‘Brexit’ vote in June. by jack troughton The referendum vote to leave the EU has triggered the setting up of a number of different pressure groups and sparked a number of electronic petitions to go before the British Parliament. Both moves are intended to remind London and Brussels there are British nationals living across Europe and

Europeans living in the United Kingdom that have a huge stake in future negotiations. In the uncertainty following the referendum – and the anger of expats barred from having a vote under the 15year rule – there has been an appeal for calm until formal talks begin between Britain and its 27 EU partners.

Rules not made to be broken IGNORE THE red flags warning swimmers of dangerous conditions at the beach at your peril – two swimmers found themselves in hot water with the authorities by repeatedly refusing to return to dry land after the sea became a ‘no go’ area. Lifeguards and the police tried to get the visitors out of the waves at Javea because of a potentially deadly rip current. The 750€ they were both fined will have made a bit of a hole in their spending money. Safety rules also came under the spotlight during bull running. The fiesta event is not to everyone’s taste but again the regulations are there for a reason and a 15-year-old thought he knew better than the safety marshals who blew the whistle because they knew he was underage. Unfortunately, in the arena the kid slipped and was gored in the shoulder. Once home from hospital, he proudly posted a photo on social media…which was quickly taken down. The boy was in big trouble. It can be a bit of a wheeze to bend the rules once in a while but both cases are a tad more serious than the outrageous interventions by health and safety that frequently make the press. Lives in both cases could be at risk. However, a happy ending over an inadvertent piece of getting things wrong. Heads dropped at La Vila Rugby Club after disqualification from promotion play-offs in a ruck over a player’s registration. Bravery and the beast THE RAPID response by fire-fighting teams is said to have prevented a disaster on the slopes of the Montgo Natural Park on Tuesday evening as flames broke out close to one of Valencia’s most visited beauty spots. by Jack Troughton A home and two cars were destroyed on Nova Xabia and gardens were damaged after the alarm was given at around 4.30pm. And 45 people were evacuated from 14 houses in the area as a precaution – the fire was said to be under control by 11.30pm. Two hectares of tinder dry land was burned. Six fire crews, four specialised forest fire teams, the volunteer fireman from Javea’s Balcon del Mar, were joined by local police, the Guardia Civil, Civil Protection and the Red Cross. In a coordinated response two helicopters and two seaplanes were employed dropping water onto the flames to help stop the fire spreading. One witness said: “It looked like a dogfight from a war film as the aircraft criss-crossed in the sky above Javea.” The cause of the fire is being investigated but a thick column of smoke was clearly visible from miles around. The seaplanes landed in Javea Bay (pictured) to replenish water in their tanks to drop on the fire; providing an unexpected and colourful sight for holidaymakers. Rain on Wednesday was said to have helped dampen the affected area and prevent the fire reigniting. Large areas of the natural park between Javea and Denia were destroyed in a huge fire that engulfed the Montgo in September 2014.

Legend boosts club morale RUGBY LEGEND Jonny Wilkinson CBE has sent spirits over the bar at Villajoyosa after the controversial exit of ‘La Vila’ from the promotion play offs. by Jack Troughton The former England and British and Irish Lions fly-half – a World Cup winner in 2003 – sent an email to the Costa Blanca club after the table-topping side were disqualified over an allegation it fielded an unregistered player. The “iconic” 37-year-old, who retired from international duty in 2011 and quit the sport at the end of the 2013-14 season, helped England lift the William Webb Ellis Cup after an extra time drop goal against Australia in a pulsating World Cup final. Acknowledged to be one of the sport’s greats, he emailed “all players at La Vila Rugby Club” with “simply a message to say congratulations on a great season.” He wrote: “I can only imagine how difficult it must be not to continue through to the finals. However, this cannot be allowed to take anything away from all the hard work, all the team spirit and the fantastic performances. “Most importantly, it cannot be allowed to detract from all you have learned and the improvement, both individual and collective.” JOURNEY Now a sought after commentator, Jonny added: “For me, be it kicking, tackling, winning or losing, the most important thing is enjoying the process. Being in the moment, performing, sharing and inspiring is an infinite journey and it is not restricted to rugby. The path continues on and off the field and beyond the game. “The fact you cannot say you were champions of the 2015-16 season means nothing when you can compare it to what you can say; that you have all grown and that you have made ground on becoming the very fullest version of who you are in every moment. And above all, you pulled together and did it as one.” He concluded: “Keep working on this last part and 2016-17 could be a different story. Whatever happened, I think we can agree that the best is still to come.” The international signed off with: “Very best wishes and huge respect.” Insiders at the club were “amazed” press releases over the controversy of the disqualification had reached so far afield but acknowledged the sport was a close knit community. RTN was told: “That such an iconic player (as Jonny Wilkinson) takes time to write this is praise indeed for the team’s efforts.”

Expats find Brexit voice BRITISH EXPATS across Europe are busy lobbying politicians to voice concerns about life abroad after the historic ‘Brexit’ vote in June. The referendum vote to leave the EU has triggered the setting up of a number of different pressure groups and sparked a number of electronic petitions to go before the British Parliament. Both moves are intended to remind London and Brussels there are British nationals living across Europe and Europeans living in the United Kingdom that have a huge stake in future negotiations. In the uncertainty following the referendum – and the anger of expats barred from having a vote under the 15-year rule – there has been an appeal for calm until formal talks begin between Britain and its 27 EU partners. However, as reported in RTN, expats living in Spain and other countries are worried about such things a healthcare, pensions, and taxation. British citizens continue to enjoy full EU membership rights until the UK pulls out after an expected minimum of two years of negotiations. Prime Minister Theresa May told Danish and Dutch leaders this week that the UK would not launch Article 50 until next year. Article 50 of the EU Treaties is the formal process of leaving the European Union and the Premier said the UK will not invoke it until 2017, to allow member states to prepare properly for the crucial negotiations. During a recent visit to Rome, Mrs May said Brexit should develop a model that suited Britain and the EU rather than adopting “a model that is on the shelf already.” Asked about the rights of Italian and other EU nationals living in Britain – and by implication British expats living in Europe – she said: “I want to be able to guarantee their rights in the UK. I expect to be able to do that and I intend to be able to do that, to guarantee their rights. “The only circumstances in which that would not be possible would be if the rights of British citizens living in other EU member states were not guaranteed.” LOBBY Expat Citizen Rights in EU – or ECREU – is a lobby and self-help group founded to insure the rights of British residents are in the forefront of the minds of those negotiating Brexit in the UK and Europe. Run by a volunteer team of campaigners, it is free to join. A spokesman said: “We are working to get British MPs and Brussels representatives on our side and willing to state our case in any discussions and negotiations resulting from the UK’s decision to leave the EU.” He said ECREU was a means to allow people to have a voice with “impeccable contacts” at the highest level and could give members “the power to influence decisions” that could define their future. The group’s website is www.ecreu.com. Brian Cave, one of the founders, said: “The threat of Brexit is causing much worry. My personal view is that one should not over-emphasise the issue – live for the day but it is wise to keep a ‘weather eye’ on developments...we must not be ostriches.” The UK Government petitions site has a number of electronic petitions linked to Brexit and act as a “prod” to Parliament – once they reach 10,000 signatures both the Civil Service and politicians. Two have been launched by the British Community Committee of France and relate to healthcare and pensions. The petition ‘Commit to healthcare arrangements for British pensioners living in the EU’ can be found at https://petition.parliament. uk/petitions/156984. And petition ‘Maintain pension increases for British pensioners living in the EU’ can be found at https:// petition.parliament. uk/petitions/161717. A third petition involves the rights of British expats to continue to enjoy free healthcare in EU countries and aims to raise awareness of a major issue. It simply states ‘On Brexit, British expatriates should retain their rights to healthcare within the EU’. It can be found at https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/161997.

Fireworks set to light up the sky THE FESTIVAL of Castell de L’Olla in Altea celebrates its 30th anniversary this weekend with fireworks lighting up the Costa Blanca night. by Caroline Tyszka The event, which is always held on the Saturday night closest to the 10th of August, celebrates the Saint’s Day of San Lorenzo. This year the event is scheduled for 13th August with the fireworks starting at midnight, lighting up the 1.4 kilometre beach on the outskirts of Altea. The display, which attracts over 50,000 people every year - is set off from floating platforms to the music of a live orchestra - with visitors arriving from early in the afternoon to get the best viewing points. The town hall has announced that extra parking will be available and signposted; although it is recommended that people use the tram service wherever possible. Vicent Ripoll, Councillor for Public Safety and Traffic underlined the significant logistical and infrastructure planning involved and asked that everyone was patient as they arrived and left, and followed the instructions given by the security personnel. And he appealed for visitors to use public transport as much as possible or to go foot and leave the car at home. A special tram service for the event has been arranged offering more frequent trains throughout the night. Trains

will depart from the Benidorm station to the l’Olla de Altea station at 9.00 pm; 9.40; 10.20; 10.54; 11.15; 11.29 and 1.29 am. The Calpe to l’Olla service is by bus because the tram service is temporarily suspended. Returning to Benidorm the service offers extra trams at 0.58 am; 1.08; 1.38 and 2.03, and the No10 bus service will be running, but delays are expected in heavy traffic. For full details of the special tram service go to www. tramalicante.es or call 900 72 04 72.

Benidorm on the map for music FRENCH DJ David Guetta and the ever-popular Low Festival have put Benidorm and the Costa Blanca firmly on the music calendar. by Caroline Tyszka Over a period of three days at the end of July thousands attended the Low Festival, with organisers saying crowds reached 75,000 and describing the event as a resounding sell-out success. And on 28th July a free concert on the Levante beach was organised where approximately 2,500 music lovers attended for a sample of what the festival offered. Areas in front of the four stages at the three day event were packed every evening as eager fans waited to watch artists such as the Kooks, Belle and Sebastian and Vetusta Morla. Just a week later, David Guetta took to the stage to host 20 hours of electronic music; supported by other renowned DJ’s. The Guillermo Amor Stadium was lit up with a lighting show which complimented the remixed tracks and blended with pyrotechnics and more than 16,000 people danced through the night at the macro party which had Guetta repeatedly saying: “This is so amazing.”

Eurostar workers strike THE RMT union has announced two strike actions affecting the Eurostar service in August, including the bank holiday weekend. The ongoing dispute between workers and their employer is centred on an alleged failure to honour an agreement made in 2008. This should have ensured a good work and life balance for train managers – particularly regarding duty rosters and unsocial hours. However the union is arguing that there has been no change and around 80 train managers are involved in the dispute. As a result, members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union will walk out from 0.01am on Friday 12th August until 11.59pm on Monday 14th August, and for three days over the Bank Holiday weekend from 27th August. Union workers voted in favour of strike action, claiming that balance had been “repeatedly undermined”. A spokesman for Eurostar said: “We are aware of the plans for strike action, our focus has been seeking a joint resolution whilst planning to provide a good service for our customers.” RMT General Secretary Mick Cash said: “Our train manager members at Eurostar have a heavy commitment to shift work and unsocial hours and are sick and tired of the company’s failure to honour agreements.” Eurostar has announced that if an agreement cannot be met changes to the timetables for strike days were in place and that passengers affected would be notified.

Sandcastles not welcome THE SKILLFULLY crafted giant sandcastles, seen on Benidorm’s Levante Beach for the past nineteen years, are not being built despite being admired by thousands of tourists. by Caroline Tyszka Benidorm Town Hall feels the sand figures are of no benefit to tourism; Lorenzo Martinez, Councillor for Beaches, saying: “The council does not believe that the sand structures offer any value to the beaches in the resort.” The artists, who have previously paid a fee to the council for a space on the sand, have not been invited to tender for the summer season. And Martinez believes that the focus for the beach areas should be on activities which could involve expanding the current playgroups and a multi-sport area to encourage more people to take exercise. The councillor has not ruled out the sandcastles for future seasons, suggesting that there may be an opportunity to create an international competition for artists to display their skills on the beach, although this is only at an assessment stage at the moment.

Help for disabled bathers A SPECIALIST bathing area has again been opened for the summer in the town of Villajoyosa to help those with disabilities enjoy the water. The safe zone has been fitted with a steel structure and awnings - offering shade for its users - as well as seats installed in the water – meaning that the disabled visitors have access to the sea. The bathing area will be open until September 15th between the hours of 10 am to 2 pm and 4 pm until 7 pm, an expansion on last year’s times. José Ramón Ucles, Councillor for Social Welfare said: “The accessible beach project is essential to ensure the enjoyment of the beach for people with mobility problems, for this reason we are proud of it and have been able to expand the service this year.”

In the swim by Jack Troughton

SWIMMERS OF all ages took part in the annual race across Moraira Bay, a distance of 1,800m from Playa del Portet to Playa de l’Ampolla. Before the 200 entrants took to the water, a minute’s silence was held in honour of swimmer Ignacio Blanco Lopez, from Moraira, who died recently. The overall ladies winner was Sandra Ortola in 29.34 and men’s champion Alberto Lopez in 26.46. There was also a fun event in the marina with swimmers taking on the less daunting distance of 45m – but Councillor Mario Font was pleased with the numbers involved and said the event was “important” as it promoted sport for all.

U3A’s meal deal THE FAMILY members of U3A Marina Baixa President Elaine Mitchell were special guests at the latest meal organised by the association’s Dining Out Group. Red flagged! by Jack Troughton TWO SWIMMERS have been fined under a Costa Blanca resort’s bylaws for ignoring the warning ‘red flag’ and remaining in the sea. It is believed to be the first time in Spain such penalties have been issued for an offence that risked lives – and came when sea conditions suddenly worsened. The two bathers – each hit with a fine of 750€ - refused to leave the water at Javea’s Arenal Beach despite pleas from Red Cross lifeguards and later police officers. Lifeguard towers fly a simple and internationally recognised ‘traffic light’ system of flags; a green flag means people can enjoy the water, yellow indicates people should take caution, and red signifies a prohibition on swimming. The two visitors, once coaxed back to dry land, were

told they had contravened ‘Article 139 of the Coexistence and Safety Bylaw’ – enabling the authorities to penalise people who disregard the flag warnings and instructions from police and lifeguards. The incident happened in “difficult conditions” at the beach. Yellow flags were replaced with red as sea conditions worsened “significantly” – heavy waves and strong currents prompted the Red Cross team to act. And a spokesman for Javea Town Hall said: “Despite the warning flags and constant announcements over the PA system to advise of the prohibition, many people continued to enter the water and several rescues had to be made to bring in swimmers who had got into great difficulty in trying to escape areas which had rip currents. “To tackle the situation, police officers were called to intervene and arrest two swimmers who refused to follow the instructions of the lifeguards and entered the water risking their own lives as well as those of the rescue personnel and the police.”

Teenage bull victim warned A SCHOOLBOY gored during bull running in Calpe on Sunday was earlier twice warned to stay out of the arena as organisers call for a review of safety measures. by Jack Troughton The 15-year-old slipped as he ran for protective metal cages and was injured in the shoulder as some 5,000 people packed the area – however, strict rules state people taking part must be 16. And volunteers marshalling the event maintain the youngster – who was known to be under age – and his parents ignored warnings. Following the incident during ‘bous al carrer’, the teenager was taken to Denia Hospital for treatment and later released. He later posted a photograph on social media after returning home; although the picture was swiftly taken down. The Valencian federation for bull running has already asked for the government to review safety procedures and has doubled the number of volunteers helping police such events. Former policeman Valentine Torrado, who volunteers to be in charge of safety at Calpe, said: “The trouble is you have to keep on asking people for their ID and the boy who was injured on that night had already been told twice to go away because he was known to be under age. “The police say the blame lies squarely on the shoulders of the parents who did not control him.”

Be #PassportAware TRAVELLERS ARE being urged to keep passports safe and secure this summer as they head off on holiday – losing the travel document can prove expensive and ruin a trip. by Jack Troughton More than 5,000 British visitors lost or had passports stolen in Spain in 2015 – a huge part of the 21,000 that went missing around the world. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) is urging British nationals abroad to be #PassportAware and keep them safe to avoid extra costs and troubles that can spoil their holiday. The summer season is in full swing and many people are jetting off to the sun with Southern Europe the hot destination this year. Most holidaymakers enjoy trouble-free trips. However, valuable holiday time and money can be wasted should a victim need o report the theft of travel documents to police or spend time at the nearest British consulate or Embassy to be issued with an emergency travel document (ETD). Consulates around the world issued over 30,000 ETDs last year and assisted British nationals who were victims of crime. And for the second year running, the FCO has produced a series of short films with fraud and stealth crime expert James Freedman to raise awareness of passport ‘hustling’ techniques and help people avoid this crime. FCO Minister Tobias Ellwood said: “While we all enjoy our holidays, it is important that we remain vigilant about valuables – particularly passports. Becoming a victim of theft or losing your passport could ruin your trip. “By following the simple tips included in these videos you can minimise the risk of falling victim to thieves while abroad.” Crime expert James Freedman stressed with identity crime on the increase the actual cost of losing a passport could be thousands of pounds. “Criminals and conmen are always evolving the tricks they use to target tourists, but a few simple precautions will really help you stay safe. “Only carry what you really need and keep cash and other valuables in a secure pocket or

bag. Remember is you put bags down; they should always be in your line of sight. If you don’t need your passport or other valuables when you are out and about, leave them at the hotel. Above all, trust your instincts and be aware of people invading your personal space.” The videos can be seen at FCO Travel Facebook, Twitter and You Tube feeds.

Grahame’s final bow MUSICIANS FROM across the Costa Blanca turned out in force to bid a fond farewell to the talented Grahame Sheppard at Denia Crematorium. by Jack Troughton The much-loved and highly respected 67-year-old, who “excelled” on the clarinet, saxophone and flute, died suddenly on 27th July. Family, friends, and fans packed the building’s chapel to hear tributes from people who had worked with him on stage – but it was the early hour and the number of working local musicians who had set their alarm clocks to be present that caused comment. At 10am, many of them would still be in the land of nod but for the call to say goodbye to one of their number. One member of the congregation noted: “I have never seen so many musicians up at this time in the morning.” And guitarist Rudy Maarsman – who played with Grahame in ‘Jazzify’ – underlined the point in his eulogy, saying: “I once made the mistake of calling Grahame at around noon and remember his reaction – he said ‘Rudy, it’s the middle of the bloody night!’.” He also praised Grahame’s skills as a musician. “Beside his tone and great technique, he always put an ocean of feeling and soul into his playing. This is what really touched our hearts.” Drummer Geoff Britton, once of Paul McCartney’s Wings, Manfred Mann’s Earthband, and Rough Diamond, also paid tribute: “Grahame was a quiet, shy person. To know the man, you had to close your eyes and listen to his music; the world of music is impoverished by his loss.” Social media also came alive as other musicians commented. Sting, once of The Police and still recording, posted: “I worked with Grahame in the Newcastle Big Band and the Phoenix Jazzmen in the mid-seventies. He was a consummate musician and a gentleman. I am proud to have known you.” Grahame is pictured on stage with Jazzify at the Moraira Music Festival in June 2014.

Cab pool

A town hall has suggested taxi drivers across the Vega Baja should be allowed to pool their resources. by Patricia thompson

Pilar de la Horadada Town Hall wants a change to current laws that limit a cab to operating in the area it is licensed. Under the move, taxi drivers from Orihuela, Pilar de la Horadada, San Miguel de Salinas, Bigastro, Benejuzar, Los Montesinos, Rafal, Jacarilla and BenfĂŠrrito would then be able to offer their services in any of these towns. Council spokesman, Alfonso Armenteros said these towns were surrounded by numerous isolated urbanisations. He said it made no sense that taxi services could only be provided in the town issuing the taxi licence.

WAGs see red PLANS FOR a white wine only tasting evening went awry when members of Javea U3A demanded a selection of reds were also needed. The wine appreciation group leader Trevor Rush, under pressure from some WAGS (Wine Appreciation Groupies),

decided to included bottles ‘from the dark side’ at the gettogether at La Cocina Restaurant. The tasting was organised by long term member Ted Meux, who took the controversial decision to do something never tried before and make the tasting all white. Unfortunately, Ted was unable to attend the meeting because he was feeling under the weather but his wife Sylvie substituted and presented the wines in his absence.

In the end, peace reigned and everyone enjoyed themselves and raised a glass to wish Ted a speedy recovery and a return to ‘normality’...enjoying the odd glass of red. The U3A’s second wine appreciation group, WAGS Too, met at the restaurant the following day for another tasting. Full details of Javea U3A’s groups are available at www.u3ajavea.org.

Meet Father Jim from a big country by Jack Troughton TEXAS-BORN PRIEST Father Jim Booker and his wife Chrissie have joined the Costa Blanca Anglican Chaplaincy and a team covering eight churches between Gandia and El Campello. A seventh-generation Texan and born just outside the gates of NASA – his father was a engineer who first worked on the Apollo programme – Father Jim will be the lead chaplain at Ermita San Josep in La Fustera, Benissa, and Javea’s Ermita del Popul. After graduation from high school in the Lone Star State, he joined the US Air Force, worked for a short time on a cattle ranch, and moved to the oilfields after funding his training

as a diver. He worked in the Gulf Coast before moving to Aberdeen and the North Sea oil industry before changing careers and at the age of 29 studying theology at Aberdeen University and at the Scottish Episcopal Church seminary in Edinburgh. And once ordained he became a church rector, a prison chaplain and ‘offshore’ chaplain to the Missions to Seafarers – after 15 years taking time out to run a small Cornish hotel with Chrissie and finishing his degrees. Later, Father Jim and Chrissie – born in Sussex – worked in Arizona and Florida before grabbing the chance to work in Spain with the Anglican Chaplaincy. Cataracts, is it time to operate? Dra. Maria Paradis (pictured), Clinic Baviera’s ophthalmologist in the Denia clinic, explains what cataracts are and how they are now treated.

When do cataracts usually occur? Cataracts arise as the natural lens of the eye gradually loses transparency. Their appearance falls into part of the normal aging process of human beings, although other factors can favor earlier appearance, such as diabetes, eye infection or trauma and genetics. What are the main symptoms manifested by patients with cataracts? The main symptom of cataract is the loss of visual acuity. The patient sees cloudy, fuzzy through one or both eyes; seeing worse at night or in low light conditions; becoming more sensitive to glare, and less sharpness in colour perception. In short, cataracts cause significant visual impairment thereby deteriorating quality of life.

How can you correct this problem? The only treatment for cataracts is surgery. Simplification of surgical techniques, coupled with the search for better quality of life for patients, has led to a change in the criteria indicating when the operation is necessary.

change in the lives of patients, as they recover with a simple procedure the sight lost to cataracts. Also, if we use a trifocal lens, we can eliminate other associated defects, such as presbyopia (tired vision), myopia (shortsighted), hyperopia (farsightedness) and / or astigmatism.

Is it important to have surgery as soon as possible? Some years ago, patients were recommended to wait until they had very advanced cataracts before undergoing surgery. Now, the operation is performed as early as possible, as soon as the patient begins to perceive a deterioration in their quality of vision. Thus, the long waiting periods and a progressive visual impairment that developed into a complex intervention and complicated post operation, have given way to an intervention that is done sooner and requires only about ten minutes, with a short postoperative period allowing the patient a rapid recovery of their visual level.

What is the method currently used, and what is involved? Currently, phacoemulsification is the most common and most reliable way to treat this ailment. This procedure involves the use of ultrasound to dissolve and remove the lens and replace it with an artificial intraocular lens that does a similar function without loss of transparency and lasts a patient’s whole life

Is it a safe procedure? Cataract surgery is the most common intervention in the field of ophthalmology. It is estimated that in Spain an average of 400,000 such operations are carried out each year, so it is a proven and safe surgery. How does this intervention affect patient’s quality of life? Cataract surgery is the procedure with greater overall impact on the quality of life of the population. This intervention is a

What type of lenses are used in this type of intervention and what advantages do they represent for the patient? The very latest multifocal lenses are used, an area in which Baviera Clinic are a leaders, thanks to their experience in the use of trifocal lenses. The patient, while solving the problem of cataracts, can also cure other visual defects such as tired vision, farsightedness, or nearsightedness; and recover a full range of vision, from reading a book to watching TV, all without glasses. Free Pre-Operation appointment offer If you are interested in the procedure, why not take advantage of a free, no obligation pre-operation appointment to assess your vision, at their Clinic in Denia. ARTISTS ACROSS the Marina Alta are invited to join the annual ‘Jose Lledo Quick Paint Competition’ in Javea on Sunday 28th August – part of the Our Lady of Loreto Fiestas. by Jack Troughton Named after artist and agronomist Jose Lledo, who died in 2006 aged 62, the theme is seascapes and scenes from Javea Port; the painter produced most of his work in and around the town, specialising in landscapes and old buildings. He launched the competition a year earlier as a member of L’Associacio de Barques Tradicionales – the Association of Traditional Sailing Boats of Javea. Now in its seventh year, the association named the competition after its founder following his death. A successful annual event, it is subsidised by the association, the fiesta committee and the town council. There are various prizes and amongst them for local artists and another for painters across the region to encourage a wider participation. The competition is open to all artists, both professional and amateur. There are two categories; one for people aged over 15 and an-

The competition takes place in Javea Port on 28th august between 9am and 2pm. Registration is between 9am and 10am in the fish market in the port. The paintings will be exhibited at the Solar Blasco Museum, Placa dels Germans Segarra in Javea, from 17th September to 16th October – the prize-giving takes place on 17th September as part of the opening ceremony at 8pm. For adults, first prize is 600€ and second prize is 200€; there is also a ‘local prize’ of 200€ and a ‘regional prize’ of 200€ for residents of Javea and the Marina Alta respectively who have not won the first or second placed award. Danced with wolves NATIVE AMERICAN Chief David Bald Eagle, who appeared in the Oscar-winning film ‘Dances With Wolves’, has died aged 97 at his home on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation in South Dakota. The grandson of Chief White Bull – who fought at the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876 – he was born in a tepee in 1919, his native Lakota name translates as ‘Wounded in Winter Beautiful Bald Eagle’. Bald Eagle appeared in more than 40 films and he also trained a host of stars including John Wayne in horse and gun handling, and also worked as Errol Flynn’s stunt double. Before his Hollywood career, he served in the US Army in World War Two, fought at the landing at Anzio and was severely wounded by German fire while parachuting into Normandy during D-Day in 1944. He then pursued a music career as a drummer for Cliff Keyes’ Big Band, and before turning to acting became a ballroom dancing and was a member of a rodeo stunt team. However, away from the film set, Bald Eagle was the face of South Dakota’s state tourism promotions and in 2001 was elected first Chief of the United Native Nations, the voice of indigenous people worldwide. His last film was ‘Neither Wolf Nor Dog’ which was premiered at the Edinburgh Film Festival in June – the film’s director Steven Lewis Simpson said Bald Eagle was “truly unique”. He added: “His life was more extraordinary than those that most great biographies are written about; the joys and the tragedies. “He was an astonishingly beautiful man. The sparkle from his eyes when he smiled or was being mischievous was a joy to behold.”

legal&finance Summer: Separations and divorces. Expatriates with assets in Spain by

Carlos Baos

Statistically during the summer months, and especially in September (in August the family courts do not hold session), consultations on divorces and separations and the number of family court claims presented increase. While on holiday we might think that having more free time, and without the stress produced by work, children’s activities, etc., would make it an ideal time for couples and families. However, the truth is that the numbers say otherwise, it may be that with more time together there are more possibilities of conflict. Each year after holiday periods, including after the Christmas holidays, there are more family breakdowns than normal. If unfortunately this happens, it is essential to prepare the divorce or separation as conveniently as possible and make sure that we have all the necessary or important documentation and information in place. If you are an expatriate living in Spain or living in your country: United Kingdom, France, Germany, etc., there are legal and practical issues that must be considered. If you live in Spain, there are concepts of international law that may be of vital importance that could determine the law applicable for the divorce, and the matrimonial property regime, and the application of the rules of one country over another could be very relevant. If you do not live in Spain, but part of your assets are in Spain, and your intention is to initiate the divorce or separation process in your own country, it is still essential that an expert in Spanish Law helps you and your lawyers. For example in divorces by mutual consent, drafting the agreements one way or another may decide whether higher costs or taxes are to be paid, to explore the possibility to register the court order and change of ownership of properties in Spain at the Land Registry, etc.

If you find yourself in this situation, and unfortunately it is not possible to solve your family situation, if you are a foreigner with properties or assets in Spain, whether resident or not,

you should seek legal advice about the proper steps to be taken, because the consequences can be very different. Contact us and we will help you.

Is there a new banking crisis looming

Just the other day it was announced that Barclays are having to pay another £77m for the rigging of Libor and Euribor markets, this is in addition to the £290m fine they had to pay in 2012, Barclays are not alone HSBC and Deutsche Bank, to name but a few have been hit with hefty fines as well. How many more fines can the Banks take? When the latest round of stress tests were carried out they revealed that the UK’s four biggest banks would need to raise another £155bn in fresh capital to withstand a new financial crisis, despite the view of the Bank of England Governor that lenders have an adequate cushion to cope with further turmoil. Those are the results of research from three respected financial academics – and add to a growing feeling that the Bank of England is dangerously undercooking its capital requirements on UK lenders in the face of swelling instability in financial markets. UK banks had to be rescued in 2008 and 2009 at huge cost to British taxpayers. Capital represents the shareholder funds in banks which absorb their losses. When losses are greater than the capital cushion the bank is bust and may need to call on state support if deemed to be systemically important. In a new paper Viral Acharya of New York University and Diane Pirerret of the University of Lausanne and Sascha Steffen of the University of Mannheim calculate that HSBC, Barclays, Lloyds and the Royal Bank of Scotland would need to raise $185bn (£155bn) of new equity to retain a 5.5 per cent capital cushion in a crisis, which is the benchmark of safety used in the past by the European Banking Authority. Yet despite the above HSBC, Barclays and Lloyds all paid out billions in dividends to their shareholders, while turning a blind eye to the capital holes in their balance sheets. That hole is roughly equal to the present market capitalisation of these banks, implying that they are massively overexposed. No one wants to see another repeat of Northern Rock or worse still Lehman Brothers collapse, so now is the time to make sure that you are not over exposed to Banking/Counterparty Risk. The key to protecting yourself and your money is to diversify your Risk.

Don’t hold more than the guaranteed amount, £75,000 or €100,000 in any one Banking Group. Remember this only covers current accounts and deposit accounts, nothing else, not Bank investments of any shape of form, for example capital guaranteed investment bonds linked to the performance of a company/companies or a stock index, these are usually guaranteed by the Bank offering them, so if the Bank has

problems their guarantee in worthless. The course for destruction is set We are merely skittle targets as the bowling ball of recession thunders down the Brexit alley…

have taken a nosedive, the GfK consumer confidence index has seen a sharp drop and Ellie Goulding said on that fateful Friday…

Not only should you consider loaning your uncle’s 12-bore (an automatic set-up wiring the trigger to the front door will do the trick), but you must also stick to your guns by remaining invested in the same asset allocation you and your adviser settled on months or years ago taking into account your appetite for risk.

“I felt a fear I’ve never felt this morning” Anyway, enough of the politics. How should we, as savvy investors, react?

That’s right. From Eddie Izzard to David Beckham to Bob Geldof, the oracles have spoken. So we better assemble our hunting knives and order in enough croissants and chorizo to keep us going for a decade. Admittedly, preparing for a zombie apocalypse could be hysterical, but there are very real rumours of economic recession now that the Brits has passed judgement on the EU. It is true; the pound hit a 35 year low recently, shares in UK banks and housebuilders

Prepping Tip #1 Whilst assembling vital meds, tourniquets and IV stands for the impending influx of trauma cases as tribal warfare spreads – invest too, in ensuring that you are not paying over the odds for products and fund selections. Individual investors under-perform the market by approximately 7.3% per year largely as a result of hidden charges (Source: 2015 Dalbar study of US equity investors). For expats, the risk of running into a smoothtalking, unscrupulous financial salesman has been high – I am sure they will be the first to get mauled by zombies post-Brexit – but there are a few simple steps which will help you dodge the costly products a few may continue to peddle.

In the long run, hidden fees and zombie salesmen will do far more permanent damage to your portfolio than market volatility. Make very sure your adviser is not infected… I mean unqualified. Prepping Tip #2 As ever, diversification is the key.

Studies show, “About 90 percent of the variability in returns of a typical fund across time is explained by [asset allocation] policy.” This applies to the underlying performance of your portfolio too. If you have a 70/30 mix of equities and bonds, then ignore the noise. Stay proportionately invested 70/30 in the same top-line asset classes. ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Venus squares with Saturn midweek. You are in the position to be able to see that currently nobody gains by whatever is going on right now. This is a give on, and a no win situation that will only be solutioned by someone taking the reins before everything veers very badly out of control. It may be hard to establish peace, but it is still the best option. You can easily be your own worst enemy. Though your conscious desires are generating some wishful thinking, it gives a distorted view of a reality you have to step into. Venus opposes Neptune and this brings the reveal of what is really being swept under the carpet right now, and why it has to be like this, when there are options clearly available to suit

An intensity of inner emotion sees you ready and capable to finally take on love and all its aspects. Venus trines Pluto at the beginning of the week. Because your emotion is so powerful it may very well have a strong effect on others around you at this time, but the main focus is on partnership and what this really means to you right now!

Your strong will is backed by an interesting aspect this week, as the Sun trines Jupiter. The Sun rules Leo and exalts in Aries, bringing many ardent fire sign qualities into free play. Particularly affected is the fifth house which makes for enthusiasm as you become more out going, and you open up about something you have been trying very hard to hide! A free range this week as you have the opportunity to turn any attention seeking behaviour into magnetism, spiritual insight, and, in so doing release leadership potential that is much needed right now. The Sun trines Uranus and for you this means some experimentation until you get it just right, so that your true potential can now be finally released. It would appear that luck is very much on your side as you emerge to be the victor after a clashing of horns. As Jupiter acts up on Uranus things seem to be going your way, and you will get the support that you need if you continue to believe in yourself and enter a whole new phase. This is not change for changes sake but a reveal of what’s on option!

Ceres brings routines and plans into the fore, and you should be checking on the finest details just now and just to make sure that things actually run smoothly. Calling time on the past, when you were bogged down with pressure and controlled by others, you are now very much free; and about to make your very best intentioned moves into a new reality. Mars tries to enforce the negative in a situation which has left you feeling baffled but angry to boot! You have left behind a conflict that you had hoped would sort itself out; but you would never have expected what was to come next. Don’t get mean, get angry because you have every right, remember that karma comes to those who deserve it. Jupiter, your planetary leader, actions with Uranus and helps you to strengthen your belief forms. This means that you are beginning to work around new realities and are actively seeking solutions to your unanswered questions. They are only unanswered because you have kept things within; however now it is a time to ring the changes. You are known to be a good organiser, but so too are you protecting your own security as you are not ready to take the risk that you know would make such a difference to your life. O.K. perhaps now is not the time for change but it is time to get the ball rolling and to show others that you do mean business, and that you are not to be messed with. Whatever you do you are striking out on behalf of others and you are quick to take up the cause, often not realising what this actually means. This week the Sun trines Uranus and this brings things to a head, so that there can be an ease in finding those good resolutions you always seem to use to the benefit and well being of those you truly care for. Everything seems to revolve around your artistic and creative sources; and you only have to look within to see that you are geared up and ready for something to happen that will release all that you are holding close inside. As Venus opposes Neptune this week you will feel the force of your true spiritual power as true reveal comes from enlightenment

Kenny, when was the happiest time of your life? Is there any better coming my way in the near future? Betty P. That’s very easy Betty, the best of times is now. I am not one who lives in the past although I do find myself lost in memories sometimes, as we are all prone to do. I think of the past sometimes too with a shudder that jolts me into asking why I did what I did, but often it was because I had no options or that it seemed to be the right thing to do. Being able to look back in hindsight, maybe it wasn’t right, but it was my response at the time, and it has now become a part of my destiny. As for the future Betty, make things happen for you and this will bring you a host of wonderful things coming your way. Ask Spirit for anything you need, because they heed a nudge from time to time, and otherwise be happy and content with what you have. May Spirit bless you in all the ways you wish!

Giving4Giving help grant a wish by Caroline Tyszka A FEW weeks ago Gary from the Giving4Giving cancer support charity donated 1,000 euros to help fund a seizure dog for a young boy with severe epileptic fits, but still wanted to help more if possible.

A CHARITY race night has been organised to help raise funds for a local charity. The event, which is being held at The Two C’s bar in Alfaz del Pi aims to raise funds for the Giving4Giving cancer support charity, who in turn help many other local charities. On Saturday 20th August from 8 pm guests are invited to a fun pack evening which includes

THE EXPAT community gathered for an afternoon of fun and music to help raise funds for two local dog charities. The event, held at the Atomium Bar in Benidorm, raised 800 euros with a further donation of 60 euros being given after the day. One of the organisers, Pam Brewis, said, “we were given two tins and jars – full of coins - from Tony’s exchange and Dave’s Chippy which helped towards the total, a huge thanks to everyone who came.” During the afternoon guests enjoyed a very busy tombola stall as well as taking part in the karaoke. Dog collars, leads and blankets were sold for a nominal fee with the buyer free to donate the items back to the dogs’ home, before the raffle took place and the musical entertainment – including Jamaica Road – kept the party going well into the evening.

Speaking to the Grant a Wish charity he was told that they also needed help with buying clothes for a men’s shelter in Gandia and that they were saving hard to help buy the urgently needed clothing. Always willing to help a good cause the Giving4Giving team decided that they could assist and spent 1,000 euros on shoes, trousers and t-shirts which were presented to Ramon from the Grant a Wish organisation last week. The Giving4Giving charities shops, three in total, always welcome donations and volunteers to help. If you think you can spare a little time please call Gary on 603 137 697.

Windows 10

Hi, Sometime ago you sent a link to stop windows 10 automatically installing and also the number of the update that installed windows 10,both of which I have misplaced. At the moment I have a load of updates waiting to be installed, including the automatic update for windows 10. My question now is, as it is approaching the end of the free update period for windows 10 will the automatic update become defunct once the free period has ended ,or is it liable to still install itself even after the period end. I don’t really bother about installing updates as none of them normally apply to me but I don’t want to install them and find that windows 10 has crept in via the back door. Regards, Michael Response: The update that is used for W10 is “ KB3035583” The tool is at https://www.grc.com/never10.htm which does the removal of the W10 update for you, and stops it from being installed. Windows 10 free upgrade ended on July 29th 2016. I would assume the free upgrade update will become defunct, to be replaced with an “upgrade for x price” update. I cannot see the free upgrade installing itself after the free period has elapsed. Not too sure why Microsoft would do this for free when they want you to pay for it... Reply: Hi, Thanks for the information. I agree, I too would assume that once the free period for upgrading has ended then the updates would become obsolete, but that said who knows how the mind of ole billy gates works. many thanks.

Succulents are great alternatives to geraniums When I first came to Spain on holidays to the Costa Brava (1962) and the Costa de Sol (1977), and even when I took over my house on the Costa Blanca in 1988 the most popular plant in gardens, garden centres and local propagating nurseries was probably the geranium.

by

Dick Handscombe Practical gardener and author

‘ Window box planted up four months old from cuttings from the garden’…

Not only were house windowsills and early apartment terraces festooned with geraniums but gardens had several metre high banks of geraniums. Their benefits were then that they could flower for most months of the year, they could live for years, they were easy to propagate from, they were not very thirsty, they were rarely killed off by insects or fungi and they were inexpensive. Then in the 1990’s the demand from new home buyers, Spanish and expat, was such that Spanish growers could not keep with the rising demand and imports began and grew and grew bringing with them the first serious plagues of the dreaded geranium moth. A pest difficult to control as some plants were already infested when purchased or within a couple of days of killing off those moths in your own garden new ones hopped over the fence from nearby untreated gardens. This is especially a problem in the autumn when summer holiday making families who had purchased them to brighten the garden or apartment terrace from June to September then leave them un-watered to die. So this year I decided to start to plant up the geranium window boxes with collections of easier to keep succulents. Two of them are shown in the two photographs. ‘Window box planted up with one euro plantlets in the spring’

The benefits have been as follows. 1. Low cost plantlets or garden cuttings from pots or rockery. 2. Rooted plantlets and unrooted cuttings can be mixed. 3. Little water needs and if one goes away for a week or two there is little risk of losing plants. 4. There are many suitable succulent plants of varying height and diameter. 5. Plant designs and colours can be easily mixed for interest. 6. Easily pruned to create and maintain a balanced display. 7. All cuttings can be used to propagate new plants. After my first summer’s experiments with five windowsills I will now add succulent window boxes to all window sills on the ground floor and upper floors and am very unlikely to ever return to geraniums, petunias or other annuals.

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// ´Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,´ 90´s USTV comedy show brought Will Smith´s New York street talking hip hoppin´ character to the screen, and launched quite a career for the boy too. But this is not about Will, but one of his co-stars Tatyana Ali who played Ashley, the 11 year old niece of Will´s uncle as she´s recently got herself married. What’s interesting about this particular nuptial is that Tatyana met her husband Dr.Vaughn Rasberry (you better believe it!) on the dating website eHarmony in 2014. (Again, you better believe it!) Speaking to Entertainment Tonight at her Beverley Hills reception Tatyana said “planning our wedding has been so exciting, but when we found out we were expecting, our perspective shifted completely, we want our ceremony to really celebrate our newest blessing!” Lovely … but sooo American!

The Bowie-tree will bear its first UK fruit in November! The legend of David Bowie will run and run as, month by month, year by year his life´s work continues to pop up and surprise and delight. Such has recently been the case as a book David wrote with Irish playwright Enda Walsh called Lazarus, that´s based on a film David starred in ´The Man Who Fell to Earth, ´ debuted on Broadway last December.

We´ve recently been heavily bombarded with news of the Spice Girls, will they, won’t they, and how they are now going to be a trio with Scary, Ginger and Baby going out under the name of GEM … thrilling stuff I must say! The tale today however is solely about Ginger, Gerri Halliwell, (Horner), as she´s just finished a country music album that´s due out later this year. However Ginger / Gerri , has found out that some spoilers have spread rumours that the songs on the album contain only acoustic country songs and ‘very personal’ tracks about ‘motherhood,´ and she´s not best pleased … even although it´s true!’ So basically Gerri´s the new Dolly Parton, but she´s not too keen for anyone to know just yet!

Lazarus was also the title of his last album as well as his final single that topped the UK charts when they were released in January, and now ´Lazarus the Broadway show´ is attracting similar attention. I am now the bringer of good tidings, as a London Production has been put together and should be onstage this coming November. Tickets went on-sale last week, so if you’re a Bowie fan, get hustling and bustling before it goes into total meltdown. The show features many of Bowie’s biggest hits and has therefore been described as a Jukebox Musical, a bit like ´Mamma Mia´ and ´Sunny Afternoon´ about the formation of The Kinks. The Sun however did say … and I quote “but it sounds a hell of a lot more surreal than those two!” … David Bowie and surreal have always been strange bedfellows. Again according to The Sun, the London production will star Michael C Hall, who will play David’s film role as the fallen alien Thomas Jerome Newton; Hall played the part in the Broadway production, when it opened at the end of last year to rave reviews. An extra titbit of info about Michael … in ´99, director Sam Mendes cast him as the flamboyant ´Emcee´ in the revival of Cabaret, his first Broadway role. As if that was not enough to get your juices flowing, because David passed away in January, plans to get a London run on its feet picked up speed, and now a brand new temporary theatre is being built in Kings Cross, with an audience capacity of 800, especially for the production ... how cool is that! Many became seriously analytical about David´s strong interest in the Lazarus figure, the Biblical character that was raised from the dead, but David was primarily a writer and musician, and I am certain the stage production of ´Lazarus´ in London will remind us all what an extraordinary talent he was. Trekkies of the world will be raising a glass on September 8, the date of the first Star Trek episode in 1966. In the time honoured tradition of drinking alcohol to mark such an occasion, New York´s Schmaltz Brewing are releasing two special edition beers to mark this 50th anniversary. Up first is ´The Trouble With Tribbles´ named after the episode where the USS Enterprise is overrun with cute little hairy beasts, with lead brewer Drew Schmidt commenting “light Carastan malt gives some residual sweetness to this beer in the form of very light toffee,” ooh I love toffee! The other beer is called ´Voyage To The Northeast Quadrant´ and apparently its aroma is ‘accented by fresh citrus fruits such as lemon and lime with subtle notes of white wine.’ That´ll get rid of those Klingons on the starboard bow!

Life Coach

WITH A background in family and matrimonial mediation, Life Coach Sara Bell helps Readers with their daily worries. If you are having difficulties with relationships, family, work or any other aspect of your life, then help is at hand.

Having opinions I am 14 and have trouble keeping friends. When I have asked my ‘former’ friends, why they don’t want to be with me, some have said it’s because I am bossy and try to tell people what to do, or tell them they are wrong about things when I have an opinion. I just seem to get up their noses. This is just the way I am, but I end up with no one wanting to bother with me. Making and keeping friends at your age is not always plain sailing. Most youngsters go through life chopping and changing their circle of friends, it’s quite normal. However there are some things you can do to help things run more smoothly. Although having opinions isn’t always the same as being opinionated, you might want to keep in mind that people generally don’t want their opinions picked apart. Try to accept that everyone has their own view on life, and try not to comment. How would you feel if someone said to you that YOU were wrong? It’s all about diplomacy really.

Write to Sara in confidence. A pseudonym will be used if you wish. Sara reads all letters and can give a personal reply. Email your question to agonyaunt@roundtownnews.com or Sara is available for private consultations, telephone 650 054 467.

I want us to move in together I want to settle down and get a flat with my girlfriend. But she still wants the single life, and to go out with her friends. She lives with her Mum and Dad, and her parents pay for everything. She doesn’t even have to pay keep. She is more interested in getting her nails done than talking with me about our future. It seems your girlfriend has quite a good life at home. Perhaps she is not yet mature enough to settle down. At your age a person should at least have had a job, and be thinking about striking out on their own in life. If this is not the future you imagined, then you’ve got some thinking to do. If you force her to live a life she’s not yet ready for, she will resent you for it and trouble will soon start. You both are clearly not on the same page here. Time to have a serious conversation, and if she won’t budge, you might want to think about having some time apart to see how you both feel.

life&leisure #Spanish

Basic Spanish for everyday needs by Jane Cronin

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

More about “was” I deliberately committed myself to a course of action last week, knowing that if the undertaking appeared in print, there would be no way of getting out of it. That was, of course, to look at the different ways of saying “was” in Spanish. I actually came up with six alternatives namely: “estaba, estuve, estuvo, era, fui, fue”. However, since then I have been reminded of four more! They are “estuviera” “estuviese” “fuera” and “fuese”. These are the imperfect subjunctive forms of “estar” and “ser” which sometimes, but not always, get translated as “was”. I hope that statement is enough to put you off because we are not ready for them yet, but they will come later on, I promise! Going back to our original six terms, there are two possible ways of tackling the differences between them, and that is because there are two different contrasts in meaning. One is the differences in meaning between the two past tenses (I call them the descriptive past and the simple past) and the other is the differences in meaning between the verbs “ser” and “estar”. I think I’ll start with the two verbs first and see how I get on! When I first mention the difference between these two verbs at an elementary level I explain it with the following rule of thumb – “ser” refers to “who”, “what” and “when” and “estar” refers to “how” and “where”. If by any chance you have in your head some idea related to “temporary” and “permanent” please delete it immediately. This difference is slightly helpful occasionally, but mostly it is misleading. This is particularly true when discussing events in the past. How on earth can we meaningfully differentiate between “temporary” and “permanent” when discussing things that are in the past and not in the present? That makes no sense whatsoever so best to stop trying! However, our elementary rule of thumb does have some mileage. In the past, as in the present “ser” refers to “who” “what” and “when”. That means for example that I can say “En Inglaterra yo era secretaria” (that’s “who” I was at some time in the past). “Cuando mi padre era joven” (at some point in the past my father was a young man). “El ganador fue Nadal” (Nadal

was the winner – that’s who he was when he won the match). “¿Quién llamó ayer? - Fui yo.” (Who called yesterday? It was me. I was the person who called). So that is how “who” can work in the past using “ser”. We can address the concept of “what” in a similar way. “What was the answer?” “¿Cuál fue la respuesta?” “The film was interesting” “La película era interesante” “Era” and “fue” are both forms of the verb “ser”, but notice that we are not discussing the difference between the tenses yet, we are just focusing on the fact that we can use the verb “ser” to talk about “what” something was. Finally “when” – “Cuándo fue tu cumpleaños” (When was your birthday). “Eran las dos cuando terminó la reunion”. (It was two o’clock when the meeting ended). As I suspected, this is going to take a while to get through. Next week we will look at the use of “estar” in the past, without discussing in detail the differences between the past tenses, which will come later.

The onionman cometh

ONCE AGAIN dear reader I need to stir you from your August torpor and explore the backroads by the rivers of my memory – ooh er! – came over all Glen Campbell there (for you younger groovers (snort) – check out REM’s version of ‘Gentle On My Mind’).

Do you recall Johnnie Frenchie – all garlic & Gauloises - onions strung on an old bone shaker of a bike? You see I know he existed but I never saw him. We lived during the 50’s a fairly peripatetic life, usually one step ahead of the tallyman, moving between Eastbourne & Worthing (they are not twinned, but it’s rumoured they do have a Dignitas Pact). However as Sussex is a quick frog hop across the channel from France, you’d think we would have got an eyeful (pun intended). How about you? Did you parle français with Onion Henri? Now the Rag & Bone Man astride his horse & cart I remember well. He was a regular feature up our road and us ragamuffin kids would shovel up the hay burner’s detritus & sell it to uptown posh abodes – yes! it was a ‘Good Year For The Roses’. Hell’s Bells! now I’m in George Jones mode (for you whippersnappers - Elvis Costello droned a version). Granny Monk was a tough old bird who didn’t take to anyone calling to our 2 up- 2down & one around the back terrace house without a prior invitation. She once sent off a Singer sewing machine rep with a flea in his ear. Sadly he’d just come to present Master Ashley with a brand new machine which the boy wonder had won for his mum on Radio Luxembourg The Great 208 by answering this question - “Which recording artist was known as the Velvet Fog?” Go on hotshot – without Prof. Google. The only person Gran would allow to cross the pumice stone scrubbed threshold was the gypsy woman, crystal ball at the ready, selling lucky heather with a side order of dolly pegs. She firmly believed a rebuff would incur a gypsy curse which would bedevil a family for an eternity – which could explain me supporting Brighton & Hove Albion for the past 60 years – all because I didn’t buy that damn posy. Coxinhas

In keeping with the Rio olympic celebrations these little croquettes stuffed with chicken and spices are popular snacks served in bars all over Brazil. The name means ‘little chicken thigh’ in Portuguese because of their shape Ingredients 2 boneless skinless chicken breasts (300-350g) 450g floury potatoes(such as King Edward), peeled and quartered 2 tbsp olive oil 1 large onion, finely chopped 4 tbsp Cabana spicy malagueta marinade (available at cabana-brazil.com) or Cholula hot sauce 100g plain flour 2 eggs, lightly beaten 100g panko breadcrumbs vegetable oil, for deep-frying ½ small pack flat-leaf parsley, chopped

Method 1. Bring a pan of salted water to the boil, then reduce to a simmer. Poach the chicken very gen-tly for 10 mins. Remove from the heat, cover and cook for 10-15 mins more until cooked through. Use a slotted spoon to remove the chicken and leave to cool. Reserve the poaching liquid.

2. Bring the liquid to the boil, add the potatoes and simmer for 15-20 mins until just tender. Drain, then leave to dry out before mashing and seasoning. 3. Meanwhile, heat the olive oil in a pan, add the onion and stir over a medium-low heat for 8-10 mins. To assemble, shred the chicken in a bowl, mix in the mash, onions and marinade, then taste and season. With damp hands, shape about 50g of mixture into a teardrop shape. Set it upright on a plate and repeat with the rest of the mixture. Coat each in flour, egg and breadcrumbs. Cover with cling film and chill for at least 1 hr. 4. Heat the vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large saucepan to 170C or until a piece of bread browns in 30 secs. Fry in batches for 3-4 mins until golden, turning once or twice. Remove and drain on kitchen paper. Serve warm with the parsley scattered over.

Cherry & almond tarts Ingredients 375g pack all-butter puff pastry 75g self-raising flour, plus extra for dusting 12 rounded tsp morello cherry jam 75g plain sponge or Madeira cake 100g butter, softened 75g ground almond 75g golden caster sugar 2 medium egg ½ tsp almond extract 25g flaked almond 100g icing sugar, sieved to decorate

Method 1. Very thinly roll out the pastry on a lightly floured surface. Stamp out 12 x 9cm circles with a fluted cutter, if you have one, and use to line a bun tin. Spread 1 rounded tsp of the cherry jam in the bottom of each tart. 2. Whizz the cake to crumbs in a food processor, then tip into a mixing bowl and add the flour, butter, ground almonds, caster sugar, eggs and almond extract. Beat together until smooth, then divide between the tarts, spreading a little with the back of a teaspoon to cover the jam. Scatter over the flaked almonds and

openfreeze for 2 hrs, then wrap well in cling film and freeze for up to 2 months. 3. Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4 with a baking sheet in it. Unwrap the tarts from the freezer and loosely

top with a sheet of foil. Bake on the heated baking sheet for 30-40 mins until golden, removing the foil halfway. Cool the tarts a little, then add a splash of water into the icing sugar to make a runny icing. Drizzle over the tarts and leave to set.

Pins and Needles We have all experienced pins and needles, usually in the hands, arms, legs and feet. Pins and needles manifest as a tingling, prickling or numbing sensation. It is not painful. Pins and needles is usually temporary, but can sometimes be long lasting (chronic). Temporary pins and needles Temporary pins and needles happens when pressure is applied to a part of the body cutting off the blood supply to the nerves. This in turn prevents the nerves from sending important signals to the brain. This is common during the night when you may ‘lie funny’ in bed. It

can also be caused by wearing tight shoes or socks. The pins and needles subside once pressure is taken off the affected area. Other common reasons for temporary pins and needles include:

Raynaud’s disease – which affects the blood supply to certain areas of the body, such as the fingers and toes, and is usually triggered by cold temperatures or sometimes anxiety or stress hyperventilating (breathing too quickly) Chronic (long lasting) pins and needles Sometimes, pins and needles can occur over a long period of time. It can be a sign of a wide range of health conditions, including: diabetes vitamin B12 deficiency a compressed ulnar nerve carpal tunnel syndrome a condition that damages the nervous system such as a stroke, multiple sclerosis or in extremely rare cases, a brain tumour exposure to toxic substances – such as lead or radiation certain types of medication – such as

HIV medication, medication to prevent seizures (anticonvulsants), or some antibiotics malnutrition where the body lacks important nutrients because of a poor diet nerve damage caused by infection, injury or overuse – for example, a condition known as hand-arm vibration syndrome may be the result of regularly using vibrating tools alcohol misuse cervical spondylosis – the bones and tissues of the spine can wear down over time, leading to trapped nerves and occasionally pins and needles

When to see your GP Most cases of pins and needles are temporary and the sensation disappears after the pressure is taken off the affected area. However, always consult your family doctor if you constantly have pins and needles or if it keeps recurring as it may be a sign of a more serious underlying health condition. Treatment Treatment for chronic pins and needles depends on the cause. For example, if it’s caused by diabetes, treatment will focus on controlling blood glucose levels, if it is a mechanical problem the patient will be referred to an osteopath, if the cause is a vitamin B12 deficiency this can be easily corrected etc. The most important thing is for a family doctor to determine the cause then treat accordingly.

Rocket’s golf society It was back to our “Home” on another extremely hot Summer’s day, temperatures hit a high of 36 degrees and plenty of water was the order of the day, a little tip drink at least a half litre of water before you go and play as it is difficult the rehydrate quickly when playing. Considering it is August and the high temperatures the turnout was very good, thankfully a breeze came up in the afternoon to ease the players game. Yet another well done to Vistabella green staff as the course and in particular the greens is in really good condition considering the heat wave over the past weeks and helped those who could cope with the heat. RESULTS GOLD CATEGORY 1ST Peter Daggart 31 points 2nd Paul Newman 30 points 3rd Derrick Power 27 points

pego golf society “singles stableford” competition OLIVA NOVA GOLF COURSE TUESDAY 9th of August 2016. The Society played a Ford League Qualifier today on a very hot morning at Oliva Nova, in the format of a Singles Stableford Competition, and we were greeted on the first tee with the most wonderful weather, and a beautiful golf course. Oliva Nova is looking superb these days, with the greens in perfect condition after the hollow tinning, and the fairways equally as good. There was no wind, but the temperature was up at 36 degrees, which sapped the strength as the players went round. It is noticeable how the numbers drop in the heat of the summer and today we had 33 players and guests, which is very low for Pego Golf Society. It was also noticeable that the scores today were lower than normal for some reason in both Divisions. It is strange, because conditions were perfect. They were at least three to four shots lower than the last Singles Stableford we had only four weeks ago in similar conditions. We were delighted to have four guests today, and they were Richard Morris, Martin Livesey, Derek Lindley and Richard Lindley, and all were warmly welcomed by our Captain David O’Connor. Now to the competition proper.Division 1 Winner: Penny Barden with 35 points playing off 16.6 2nd Place: Ian Robertson with 34 points playing off 15.5 3rd Place : David O’Connor with 33 points playing off 13.0 4th Place: John Guest with 33 points playing off 10.6 Division 2 Winner: Brian Barden with 35 points playing off 18.1 2nd Place: Iain Campbell with 31 points playing off 20.3

3rd Place: John Evans with 31 points playing off 18.2 4th Place: Paul Singh with 30 points playing off 26.2 So the family Barden won both the first and second division titles this week, so many congrats to both. Nearest the hole at No 16 was Iain Campbell with 3.61 meters, and nearest the hole at Hole no 5 with their second shot was Brian Barden again. We had four two’s today and they were by Mike Cuerden, Brian Barden, Mike Phillips and Nigel Siddall. The number of “Balls in the Water” today for all competitors

was 93 and there was no winner, so it is carried over until next week. Player of the day was Brian Barden, winning the second division title, having a two, and nearest the hole at the 5th hole. Well played Brian !!! If any member or guest would like to play with the Pego Golf Society, and who wouldn’t, as we are playing a “Texas Scramble” Competition” please contact our secretary and send an e-mail to Penny Barden at pegohandicapsec@gmail.com or enter through our website www.pegogolfsociety.com. A warm welcome awaits you.

Honda HR-V When the Honda HR-V arrives on my doorstep (it’s a tough job being a motoring journalist) I was very pleasantly surprised.

You see I remember the original HR-V in production from 1999 to 2006, which looked, frankly, strange. It was a quirky vehicle that didn’t really look comfortable in itself and quite boxy, too. This second generation model is a veritable delight. It’s curvaceous and sexy and extremely youthful looking no doubt enhanced by its pearly white finish. First and foremost it is a sports utility vehicle (SUV) but I would go as far as saying that it is one of the most stylish I have had the pleasure of driving. Head on it looks fresh; I like the curvaceous front end and from the rear there is a hint of the frog about it thanks to its slightly arched back. Like its smaller sibling, the Civic, the side profile suggests that it is only a three door thanks to the use of the neat concealed door handles. But of course it is not, it’s a five. Manufacturers are really raising the bar when it comes to alloy wheels these days too and Honda is no different, there is a very flash set that certainly enhances the overall look. Step inside and there is a feeling that the driver and occupants are one step ahead of the competition. For instance, select the temperature and fan speed by touchscreen – the first time I have come across this. But I find this slower to react to my requirements than traditional buttons and switches when driving because it is necessary to be quite precise and inevitably when keeping their eyes on the road, the driver cannot be.

Supportive black leather seats provide a luxury feeling to the interior. The panoramic glass roof not only allows a huge amount of light into the otherwise dark cabin but it also incorporates a tilt/slide electrically operated sunroof; this is quite unusual because often manufacturers seem to just include a glass roof but no sunroof. There is also an electrically sliding cover. A choice of two engines: either the 1.5-litre petrol or the 1.6 turbo diesel; the test vehicle is fitted with the latter. The typical diesel rattle is present on start up but most drivers won’t mind this when they can travel over 600 miles on a full tank. To drive, the HR-V generally feels a capable vehicle and not too large. However, it can be easy to misjudge its width despite the lane departure device that bleeps if the driver goes over the middle of the road. The thin manual gearstick is a novelty and positively adds to the driving experience, making selecting any one of the six

gears thoroughly enjoyable. It is a good decisive unit. There is a centre armrest in the front and a folding one in the centre rear. And there are plenty of cupholders, too. My daughters quickly discover that there are buttons on the side of the front headrests that if pushed allow them to move the headrests. Where would I be without them? I cannot lock Heidi (2) in the car while I fetch her car seat because she sets the alarm off… A sizeable boot makes light Facts at a glance work of most New price: £17,995 upwards loads and there Top speed: 121mph is plenty of leg0-60mph: 10.2secs room front and Power: 188bhp back. Economy: 70mpg Yes, I do like this Watch the video at: www.testdrives.biz HR-V.

Better than a bacon butty LIFESTYLE COACH Skip Archimedes believes natural foods fill the body with essential energy and suggests two superfast snacks that are delicious and nutritious. by Jack Troughton In this week’s ‘Skip’s Tips’, he says the two snacks are: “Faster, cheaper, tastier and healthier than a bacon sandwich”. Skip is running a free one day event ‘Forever Young’ at the Denia Marriott Hotel on Saturday 1st October to demonstrate how his advice works and tens of thousands of people are already feeling the benefits. And in his RTN articles, he shares some of his secrets about how to start living a healthier and more enjoyable life. Skip said: “Think about this for a minute. What makes the trees and plants grow? It’s energy; and this is the fundamental essence of all life as we know it. “The more energy we have pulsing through us, the more alive and happier we feel – the more foods we eat direct from nature, that used the sun’s energy and Mother Earth to make that food...the more alive we feel. “If you want to feel alive then eat more live and raw foods like fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts and grains.” For Skip’s first snack, simply take an avocado, half a lemon, sea salt, and curry powder or cayenne pepper to taste. Cut the avocado in half, remove the stone, and cut vertical lines down the fruit and horizontal lines across before squeezing the lemon over the two halves; insuring the juice goes down the cracks, and season with the salt, curry powder or cayenne pepper.

“That’s it,” said Skip. “How easy is that? Take a spoon and enjoy your healthy snack that will serve you greatly in many ways.” RECIPE And his second recipe is just as easy using a base of a healthy bread, oat cakes or crackers, avocado, tomato, lemon, and again sea salt, curry powder or cayenne pepper. Mash or slice the avocado and place on the base and slice tomato on top; now squeeze the lemon juice over the top and season as before. Skip said avocado was “incredibly nutritious” and could lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels. They contain more potassium than bananas, are packed with fibre, loaded with healthy monounsaturated fatty acids, and crammed with powerful antioxidants. He said lemon added “great zest” to both snacks and also supported a healthy heart, helps control weight, protect against kidney stones and anaemia, and contained high levels of vitamin C. And Skip said tomatoes were full of vitamins and minerals such as vitamins C and K, potassium, and lycopene and science showed could reduce the risk of certain cancers and heart disease. “Once you try these snacks, you’ll be hooked for life because

they are so fast and simple to make; plus your body and mind will actually thank you for putting something of great value into yourself,” added Skip. “Your mind and body are the only things with you for your whole life, so making sure they function well should be a priority...we don’t have to break down with age if we make intelligent choices.” To learn more go to www.youtube.com/ watch?v=p4rvKwWYMQY and to register for the free event at the Denia Marriott visit: http://skiparchimedes.com/foreveryoung.
