Brexit brings bumps PRIME MINISTER Theresa May has ended months of speculation by saying Britain would head for the door marked ‘Brexit’ by the end of March next year. by jack troughton The Premier said the process of leaving the European Union – triggering Article 50 of the Treaty of Rome – would begin and the next Queen’s Speech would include a ‘Great Repeal Bill’; to remove the European Communities Act 1972 from the statute book. The news first came as Conservatives gathered for the annual party conference in Birmingham on Sunday; Mrs May immediately dealing with the ‘elephant in the room’. However, Brexit continued to dominate proceedings throughout the week. The process of leaving is expected to take two years as the UK negotiates its departure with the bloc and individually with the 27 countries it leaves behind. Expats across Europe will watch carefully over the period – as will EU citizens living in Britain. The official line is EU citizens in the UK will have their rights respected as long as the rights of Britons abroad are also acknowledged in a reciprocal manner.

The Tories seem to mean business over Brexit, putting the ‘Great’ back into Britain, and probably explaining the meaning of life in the 21st Century – all to appeal to the centre ground of the UK electorate. There may be trouble, sorry ‘turbulence’ ahead, when it comes to extracting the country from Europe but everyone is welcome on board the Conservative charabanc and the party is busy attempting to recruit disaffected Labour and Lib Dem voters for the ride. Naturally, it may not all be a pleasure cruise; Theresa May has not minced words during the party’s annual conference in Birmingham – branding Labour the new nasties in politics and putting forward her team as the official people’s choice for the future. The party get-together in Birmingham is over and as the dust settles over triggering Brexit next March and every word is put under the microscope of political science, we might learn where we actually stand. Details of the negotiations will not be widely available it is not the language of diplomacy but key points will be made public. Hardball is on the cards from both sides, we just need to see how the ball bounces… and hopefully without spin.

Javea’s Thank You Parade HARLEY DAVIDSON riders are invited to bring their machines to Javea on Sunday 23rd to take part in a grand parade to thank all the firemen and emergency services for their heroic response to last month’s devastating fires. by Jack Troughton The idea came from the Marina Alta Classic Car Club and has full approval of Mayor Jose Chulvi and Javea Town Hall. And the event aims to raise funds for the Bomberos and emergency services who provided their skill and expertise in fighting that swept across Javea and Benitachell. The plan is to have a parade and exhibition of classic cars and the iconic motorcycles and a ‘party’ afternoon in Avenida Augusta; with displays of the cars, bikes, food and drink, and live music. The classic cars will arrive at the event site at 10.30am, the bikers will meet at the Scallops Restaurant and fairground area of the Arenal at 11am and at 11.30am, with a police escort, ride to the event via the Parador Hotel, Javea Port, and the Old Town. Fight for winter fuel

THE EUROPEAN Commission has rejected expats’ claims that ending the Winter Fuel Payment to pensioners in ‘hot’ countries is illegal. by Jack Troughton Campaigner Roger Boaden has learnt the EC has ruled the withdrawal of the benefit to retired British citizens in Spain, France, Greece, Portugal, Malta and Gibraltar did not breach European law. However, Roger, who lives in France and submitted a petition to Brussels, has two months to reply – and will be joined in the battle by expats who are currently denied the annual £200 payment; which rises to £300 to those aged 80. The benefit was first introduced in 1997-98 but was not paid to expats in Europe until the EU ruled this was illegal and said it was discriminatory and against treaty rules. Brian Cave, of ECREU – campaign group Expat Citizens Resident in Europe – said: “Any knowledgeable pensioner knows this is not the case as, while Britain is still part of the European Union, benefits are transferable and can’t be cherry picked. ‘Following Roger’s success in forcing the Department of Works and Pensions to uncover the truth about the methods used to justify ending WFP in some ‘hot’ EU countries, he is now seeking further evidence of their wrong-doing. “So the petition to the EU has taken on increased relevance. Roger now has two months to reply. We must give him the widest possible support. If you have not already done so, please back his efforts by supporting the petition.” Margaret Hales, ECREU coordinator in Spain, added: “We all moan and groan that we have lost the Winter Fuel Payment. Here is a chance to do something; actually two things. Sign the petition and join ECREU, it’s free to do so! “They both take only moments but your support will be noticed by those who take decisions. While we are still in the European Union, let’s right the Winter Fuel Payment injustice.’ ECREU has been founded by activists across Europe, including lawyers, teachers, environmentalists and retired politicians. Within a few months the group has gained thousands of members. And certainly the indications from the Spanish authorities – especially at a regional and provincial level along the Mediterranean coast – are expats are welcome. However, details concerning such things as pensions, access to health care and free movement are sparse and very real uncertainty remains. Mrs May’s announcement caused “jitters”. Sterling fell to a 31-year low against the US Dollar but the FTSE 100 index soared to an 18-month high – and the Prime Minister admitted the process would not be “plain sailing” and there would be “bumps in the road.” VALID She said there were still democratically-elected politicians saying Brexit was not valid and calling for a second vote and others saying the move would be challenged in the courts. “But come on. The referendum result was clear. It was legitimate. It was the biggest change this country has ever known. Brexit means Brexit – and we are going to make a success of it.” Mrs May said there was too many that “find the fact that 17 million people voted to leave the EU simply bewildering” and were trying to kill Brexit by delaying it. “They are insulting the intelligence of the British people.” She said the vote was a “once-in-a-generation to change the country for good” and asked for support for her government “and together let’s seize the day” – she believed the June vote was a desire for greater control but also reflected social divisions across the UK with people being ignored by “the privileged and powerful”. Mrs May said there would not be a “blow by blow account” of the negotiations as the Brexit negotiations took place but pledged: “When there are things to say, we will keep the country informed.” There was much talk of a ‘Hard Brexit’, moving outside the EU single market but taking control of immigration and ending an automatic free movement of people. The alternative ‘Soft Brexit’ involves access the bloc but allowing cross-border movement of EU citizens. NEGOTIATION Mrs May said Brexit was not “about negotiating all our sovereignty away again” and was not a negotiation “to establish a relationship anything like the one we have had for the last 40 years”. She added: “It is going to be an agreement between an independent, sovereign United Kingdom and the European Union.” The Prime Minister pledged: “We will seek the best deal possible as we negotiate a new agreement with the European Union. “I want it to involve free trade in goods and services. I want to give British companies the maximum freedom to trade with and operate in the single market – and let European businesses do the same here.” Brexit Secretary David Davis did have words of comfort for expats about the future – saying he believed their rights across Europe would be safeguarded. He said in his Birmingham speech: “When it comes to the negotiations, we will protect the rights of EU citizens here, so long as Britons in Europe are treated the same way – something I am absolutely sure we will be able to agree.”

Drunk driver had drugs THE POLICE got more than they bargained for when they stopped a suspected drunk driver this week – they also caught a possible drug dealer. by Caroline Tyszka In the early hours of Monday morning officers patrolling in Villajoyosa witnessed a vehicle speeding through a red light in Calle Cervantes, they immediately stopped the driver for the traffic violation. The man, aged about 50-years-old, was then breathalysed and found to have almost four times the legal amount of alcohol allowed, giving a reading of 0.90; the maximum limit is 0.25. Arresting the man, the officers discovered several grams of cocaine in the suspect’s possession. He now faces a criminal prosecution not only for the drugs but also as anyone exceeding 0.60 on a breathalyser is automatically referred to the courts.

Duped over kidnap

A BRITISH holidaymaker who disappeared - with his friends and family believing he had been drugged and kidnapped - has confessed that they got it wrong. Paul Tilbury, aged 35, from Greater Manchester, was on holiday in Benidorm when he became separated from his friends in the early hours of Friday 23rd September, returning 48 hours later. Members of his family in the UK spoke to RTN at the time about their relief to have him home; but that they believed he had been kidnapped - stating witnesses verified this -and Paul said he was very confused by events over the period he was ‘missing’. Paul, has now admitted that this was not the case, saying: “Hello all. Firstly, I would like to say a massive thank you to you for all of the efforts that you went to. “Secondly, there has been a considerable amount of assumptions, suggestions and whispers associated with my name, for example zombie drug kidnapping that was purely speculation. I would like to apologise for the problems and distress these may have caused to you. “

Water on tap

THE TAPS kept running in the communities of Teulada-Moraira and Benitachell this summer without the need for water cuts and restrictions. Forward planning enabled reserves to be put in place for high season when demand rises – and people have been thanked for following the advice of successful campaigns to save water. It is hoped similar moves in coming years will allow town halls the opportunity of again guaranteeing supplies.

Record breaking summer NEW FIGURES show that foreign visitors to Spain continue to increase in record breaking numbers. by jack troughton The countries National Statistics Institute (INE) reported that 10.1 million overseas holidaymakers chose Spain as their destination in August, an increase of 5.8 percent on last year. Experts predict that 2016 end of year figures will exceed last year’s record breaking 68.1 million tourists, if people continue to visit Spain, as the total to date is already 52.5 million.

Paraglider’s fatal fall

A PARAGLIDER fell to his death at the weekend after it is believed his aircraft suffered an equipment malfunction. The man, aged 61, from Fuente Álamo, plummeted around 50 metres before crashing onto the La Ermita beach in Mazarrón on Sunday morning - with many onlookers watching in horror. Emergency services were on the scene within minutes as the 112 operators took several calls from members of the public who had witnessed the event. Early indications are that his motor failed and due to the 162ft drop he was killed on impact.

Harvest Sunday SEVEN SERVICES of Harvest Thanksgiving were attended by more than 250 people in Church of England congregations across the northern Costa Blanca on Sunday. by Jack Troughton From Gandia to El Campello worshippers sang traditional and modern hymns and prayed for the relief of hunger around the globe. And 11 boot loads of groceries were collected, to be distributed to the charities supported by the congregations: the Red Cross food bank, the Caritas food bank, EMAUS children’s home and the Franciscan men’s shelter in Gandia. Church of England parishes in Spain are entirely self-funding. So fundraising is essential to maintain the Church’s ministry, including funerals and pastoral care to the sick and the bereaved. The Costa Blanca Anglican Chaplaincy serves the community from Valencia to Alicante with service in 8 different towns. New beach named

THE NEW beach at Altea has officially been named “L’Espigó” after an online vote was taken during September with residents able to choose from a selection of proposed names.

A total of 1,986 people participated and of the four options the winning name received 887 votes against second place “Clot de Mingot” which had 595 supporters. The new name refers to the massive stone that was built at that point on the coast to protect the streams.

Lions cast a spell TEULADA MORAIRA Lions throw another annual Halloween Party in the Church Square in Moraira on Monday 31st October from 6pm. The celebration is free – the club’s way of saying ‘thank you’ for all the support it enjoys during the year – and the event always attracts a large crowd of youngsters and adults, the majority in fancy dress. Dune in autumn PHOTOGRAPHER ALEC Bettney took his camera and explored the beaches of Piles and Oliva on the first Saturday of autumn – discovering a dune regeneration project to help maintain the natural habitat. by Jack Troughton Walking the sands on a sunny afternoon in a pleasant 25 degrees Centigrade, he watched sunbathers, anglers, and a few tourists all enjoying the beach off season. He also met a lady exercising three dogs – one named Lluna, the Catalan spelling of Luna, or Moon in English. The pooches were also enjoying some off season freedom on the sand. “I also came across two jellyfish the size of dinner plates washed up on the beach and a mule enjoying a snack of new grass shoots,” said Alec. “The views in both directions were truly magnificent and the beach was a soft golden colour; the sea still warm enough for a dip.” Pictured are Lluna enjoying her freedom; two dogs making an ‘ass’ of themselves; and Gandia from Piles Beach. Lions back heroes VOLUNTEER FIREMEN have been given a 1,200€ donation by Teulada Moraira Lions Club to replace and repair hoses damaged in last month’s blaze in Benitachell and Javea. by Jack Troughton Members of the Bomberos Voluntarios Cumbre del Sol are pictured with Lions led by President David Platt, the firemen still working to clear damaged woodland. Councillor for citizen security Dirk Rheindorf thanked the Lions for the club’s help and its continue support of the municipality and the “solidarity” of the volunteer firefighters. “It is a great example of volunteer service to the community.”

Fugitive arrested A MAN wanted by the authorities in Ireland for a string of crimes has been arrested near the El Altet airport in Alicante. The Irish national is accused of kidnapping a family and stealing a vehicle which contained 134,000 Irish pounds. The European arrest warrant was executed when Spanish officers discovered the accused waiting in a car and carrying fake ID. He faces trial for 11 crimes including the illegal possession of firearms, and, if convicted is expected to serve at least 50 years in prison.

Born to run WHEN SCHOOLBOY Michael Fenerty skipped school to meet rock star Bruce Springsteen he got out of trouble with the authorities by getting ‘The Boss’ to sign an absence note. by Jack Troughton Philadelphia student Michael was so desperate to meet his hero he decided to take the day off – but he and his father wanted to smooth things over with the school authorities. Springsteen was in the city to promote his new autobiography ‘Born to Run’ and the pupil and his Dad, a major fan and memorabilia collector, attended a ‘meet and greet’ with the musician at a library. Michael had already seen Springsteen live but his parent wanted to follow the school rules and the youngster said an absence note was needed – so they typed one out. It read: “Dear Principal Brown, Please excuse Michael Fenerty for being late or absent today. He came to the Free Library of Philadelphia to meet me and get a copy of my book. Thanks! Very truly, Bruce Springsteen.” When asked to sign the note, the musician told the student he would have to read it carefully first; because that was how he got in trouble with his first contract. Mr Fenerty said: “Bruce said ‘I hope you don’t get into trouble’...My son was very star struck – it was a very cool experience.”

Double exhibition Coffee TWO OF the Costa Blanca’s most vibrant and prolific painters share a month long exhibition at and cake the ArtHouse in Benidoleig from Monday 17th October to Thursday 17th December. by Jack Troughton Mary Roberts and Karen Williamson, who both paint at the working studio, are inspired by the figure and portraits alongside flowers and landscapes; their pictures full of movement and colour. Mary has years of experience with a paint brush and will showcase her work in oils, although she is also a highly accomplished water colourist. Pictured is her painting ‘Fishermen’. Karen’s work is inspired by dancers in movement and she is also a highly skilled portrait painter. She has been painting for five years, four at the ArtHouse, making the most of her natural talent. CANCER CARE Javea raised over 455€ as its contribution to the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning on Friday, the money to be donated to cancer charity Macmillan UK.

again as the cooler weather arrives but hopes to attract more members to insure there are sufficient numbers to organise a walk. Walks are generally four to five hours, with breaks to enjoy the scenery and enjoy a picnic lunch. They start at 10am and usually end at a suitable watering hole so everyone can take a well-deserved drink. The group walks at a moderate pace and

its routes are suitable for everyone who is reasonably fit. The terrain makes it essential for walking boots – and walking sticks are strongly recommended. The “Tai Chi Amigos” are staging a demonstration on the dance floor in Laguna Ribs, the bar restaurant in the Arenal in Jávea on Thursday 13th October at 5.45pm. The ‘Amigos’ can be seen all summer practicing Tai Chi in the Park in Javea pueblo but in the winter they move inside. It allows them to still get together every week to enjoy the physical, mental and social benefits of performing Tai Chi with friends. An exercise for everyone whatever age or physical ability, Tai Chi improves the health of mind and body, flexibility, balance and inner strength and exercises all the muscles, joints, tendons & ligaments. Contest, Challenge or dispute a Spanish Will as per the regulation 650/2012 I would like to contest my late fatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Will in Spain, who passed away recently, as I understand this is possible if he is English, was a Spanish resident and has all his real estate assets in Spain. Is that correct? Dear reader, Thank you for your query, you are right, before the European regulation 650/2012 came into effect, it was possible to claim Spanish Inheritance Rules applying to the inheritance of an English citizen, and therefore the children are entitled to 2/3 of the estate, as long as the English national was resident in Spain and has all his real estate assets in Spain. Because what we call the renvoi from English to Spanish Law, as the law that should govern the succession. NOTE: (WRITING IN THE BLUE) NOT SURE WHAT THIS MEANS. Now, after the European regulation 650/2012 came into effect, this means in relation to all deaths that take place on or from the 17th of August 2015, it would be essential to know when the Spanish Will that we want to contest or challenge was granted. If the Spanish Will was granted before the 17/8/2015, it will apply to article 83 ( Transitional provisions), and the provisions of the Will will be respected, as long as they are valid as per the rules of private international law which were in force at the time the disposition was made. In the case in which the deceased had his habitual residence or in any of the States whose nationality he possessed or in the Member State of the authority dealing with the succession, etc. NOTE: (WRITING IN THE BLUE) NOT SURE WHAT THIS MEANS. If the Spanish Will was granted on or after the 17/8/2015, the law of habitual residency of the deceased will apply unless they have expressly opted for his/her national law to apply to the inheritance. Therefore, in order to determine if a Spanish Will could be contested it would be: date of death, date when the Will was granted, time and place are the assets part of the estate. Once we can determine which law applies to the inheritance, i.e; Spanish or English Law, we could determine if it would be possible to contest the Will, and what are the grants to dispute and challenge it. Too Big to Fail, Let’s Hope So Deutsche Bank has been in the headlines over the last few weeks for all the wrong reasons, dropping share price, questions over its capital adequacy and a huge DOJ fine of some 14billion USD. Do you need any more evidence that the banking crisis that started 9 years ago in itself is far from over? The only difference is now the epicentre has moved from the US to Europe and the UK. All are fast being enveloped by a perfect storm of negatives, and this time around, it is substantially the policymakers and law enforcers who are to blame. All eyes are naturally focused on the specific problems of Deutsche Bank, is it insolvent, is it possible Deutsche Bank could go the way of Lehman brothers or are we seeing the final crawl towards the nationalisation of Deutsche Bank. If necessary, Angela Merkel will bail the bank out, despite German lawmakers - including the finance ministry - continuing to refute speculation that it is preparing a backup plan. Whatever the cost, Germany is more than solvent enough to take the hit. But Deutsche is not alone, as Tidjane Thiam, chief executive of Credit Suisse, observed last week, as an entire sector, European banks are still “not really investable”. Much the same disease as afflicts Continental banks also applies to British counterparts, including Royal Bank of Scotland, Barclays and even Lloyds. The saga deals yet another blow to the already frail reputation of the banking system and may cause banks to further contract their balance sheets, perpetuating the wider economic impact of the crisis. So what can you do? First, make sure that you hold no more cash in your bank current account and or deposit account than is guaranteed ie £75,000 or €100,000, if possible keep it well under this amount and spread your risk across banks. Look at taking out some investments to diversify away from the banking system. CD MONTESINOS has sacked new manager Camacho - after just two games in charge - after the Alicante-based club lost 4-1 against La Murada at the weekend in the Segunda Regional Grupo 16. A club spokesman said:”At an emergency meeting of the football club’s committee, immediately following today’s performance, and in addition to the poor display at Benijofar, the Committee has sacked Manager Camacho.”

CD Montesinos appointed Camacho this year following the shock departure of Roberto Cases after being at the helm for one season, having replaced Juampe for the 2015-16 campaign. The defeat against La Murada brought anger from sections of home fans in the 160 crowd - after a performance that has been described as ‘unacceptable’. Montesinos failed to compete, and were outplayed. Many veteran fans described the two defeats to date in the 2016-17 season have been the club’s poorest performances in recent times.

CD Montesinos have a faithful fan base - The Full Monte Supporters Club - with crowds of 400 in recent seasons attending home fixtures at The Municipal Stadium. The Vega Baja club, who suffered a double blow in the departures of Dani ORourke and Wallace this season, have yet to see club talisman, injured Brazilian striker Vazquinho in action, following his return to the club. A new manager has been lined up to replace Camacho but has yet to be publically named.

Shakin’ Stevens, the youngest of 13 children, was born in Ely, Cardiff, and worked in the building trade having previously been a coal miner. In the mid-1960s, he formed his first amateur rock and roll band with school pals and became its vocalist and frontman. Originally named The Olympics, then The Cossacks, the short-lived band finally became The Denims and performed gigs in the local Cardiff and South Wales area. They got a recording deal in 1970, and must´ve had a patient record company as it took 10 years for him to be an overnight sensation, albeit after Shaky went solo. While the 80´s spawned New Romantics, Big Shoulders and Ageing Punks, Shakin Stevens kept the jive-lovers busy with ´This Ole House´ and ´Green Door.´ The good news is he´s heading out on a full-blooded UK tour next year. Sir Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr recently enjoyed a mini Beatles reunion at the premiere of a new documentary The Beatles: Eight Days A Week – The Touring Years, directed by Ron Howard, aka ´Richie´ from big USTV show Happy Days. The movie charts The Beatles´ live gigs and meteoric rise to fame in the ’60s. Macca said “We’re getting great memories of playing with John and George; it’s very emotional and very special to see that again.” Ringo described their enduring fame as ‘beautiful’ before adding ‘People love the Beatles.´ Interestingly Paul wore the same jacket he donned for the premiere of A Hard Day’s Night in 1964 at the event. Yoko Ono and George Harrison’s widow Olivia also attended the screening at London’s Odeon Leicester Square, but quite rightly the film’s world premiere took place in Liverpool. Fab! Really Fab! Dame Angela Lansbury voiced Mrs Potts, the castle cook that turned into a teapot, in the 1991 animated film ´Beauty and The Beast,´ and she surprised many when she paid an impromptu visit last week to the film’s 25th anniversary showing in New York. The surprise consisted of her not only turning up, but taking to the stage and singing the Oscar-winning hit song ´Beauty and the Beast´ from the much loved movie. A live action remake is currently in production and will star English actors Emma Watson as heroine Belle and Downton Abbey star Dan Stevens from Croydon in Surrey as the Beast. As the film’s success has been built on the spectacular animation brought for us by Disney Productions is this s tinker too far? In the meanwhile watch Dame Angela Lansbury sings Beauty and the Beast at the 25th Anniversary Screening.

The subject of weight loss will always catch our attention, but focusing on Timothy Spall as the person shedding the pounds is a serious surprise. Timothy was in his mid-twenties when fame came a-knocking in ITV comedy-drama ´Auf Wiedersehen Pet´ when he played Barrie, the much put upon electrician in that glorious comedy drama of the 80´s. Timothy recently attended the 73rd annual Venice Film Festival and there he was showing off his very noticeable weight loss and ´looking amazing´ according to the report I read. The actors shape has, to my mind, been the corner stone of his quite marvellous career, having played roles that range from Oliver´s Mr Bumble to Peter Pettigrew in the “Harry Potter” films, ´ and looking like a stick insect might be a teensy weensy error Barrie baby! If it’s a health issue Tim your good, if it’s not … Eat the pies!

Xpats support Macmillan by Caroline Tyszka THE MACMILLAN coffee morning event held last week and sponsored by the RTN was a resounding success. Hundreds of expats attended the afternoon of cake eating and bargain hunting to help raise a massive 1,540 euros in just three hours. As the proceedings began, with Vince Tracy providing the live music and his excellent compere skills, Gary from the Giving4Giving charity organisation arrived and presented the organisers with 1,000 euros to add to their total. This very generous donation meant that the Morning Little Miss-Chief coffee group were able to send Macmillan and amazing 2,540 euros. Throughout the afternoon visitors took part in the tombola and purchased items from the bric-a-brac and clothes stalls – with many bringing their home baked cakes for the ladies to sell. Benidorm’s “Ruby Rox” kindly attended to draw the raffle with the crowd enjoying her witty humour about rules and ticket colours as winners delighted in selecting their prizes. Organisers of the event said: “We cannot thank everyone enough, those who came and supported us, the train station bar in Alfaz del Pi for allowing us to use their facilities, all the local businesses and individuals who donated raffle prizes but also the ladies who worked tirelessly to ensure the day went smoothly.”

Animal carer needs your support On Saturday 8th October at Camping Benidorm a fundraising coffee afternoon has been planned to raise much needed funds for Angie McCready who has devoted her life to caring for animals. Angie, who moved to Spain 13 years ago, began rescuing dogs within the first 12 months, taking strays off the streets, making them well and finding them homes. She says “over the years it has completely taken over my life. I have built up a huge network of likeminded people who do the same as me.” Over the past 5 years she has rescued and homed somewhere in the region of 700 dogs and puppies. With the new-borns needing bottle feeding Angie says “I can’t remember the last time I had a full night’s sleep.” She is currently rearing 15 puppies. All the monies raised will go towards vet bills, food bills and other expenses that she pays for on her own. The event at Camping Benidorm (on the Benidorm Palace road) opens at 1 pm until 3 pm - with a voucher raffle, tombola, clothes stall and various competitions to help raise as much as possible. Organisers would welcome any donations, which people can take along to the event. Angie said: “Its hard work and its unpaid, with long hours, I’m always struggling to find the funds to cover everything, but I love what I do and wouldn’t change it for the world.”

Bridesmaid betrayal My bridesmaid tried to spoil my wedding and turned up in a totally different dress to the one chosen for her. It was the right colour, so she blended in and no one said anything, but she deliberately turned up late already dressed, so that nothing could be done. Not only that, the dress was practically a replica of my wedding dress. It was obvious that she’d pulled a fast one, and my other bridesmaids consoled me on the day, but I will never forgive her. She also got drunk and made a show of herself at the reception. I haven’t said anything to her about it, I just pretended I hadn’t noticed, but I am furious. I think you are well rid of this so-called friend. What she did was pretty unforgivable. It sounds like she did all of these things intentionally, perhaps out of jealousy. If I were in your shoes, I wouldn’t have anything more to do with her. I think she was looking for a reaction from you, so you were right not to give her one.

Conditional sentences – some tricks This week is the turn of the Conditional tense.

You may well be wondering how many tenses there are in Spanish and the answer is, absolutely loads. There are far more tenses than any language could reasonably need and therefore we can often get away with two or three alternatives to say the same, or pretty much the same, thing. That is meant to encourage you rather than the opposite, but that might partly depend on how anal you are about being “correct”. That’s basically your problem though! Anyway, this week’s tense is relatively acceptable in as much as we can form it, and translate it, fairly easily. There is a fiddly bit about how to use it which I’ll mention at the end. Firstly, we’ll look at the formation of the tense, which is based on the same principle as the Future Simple. Remember that the future simple tense adds its endings on to the whole infinitive of the verb (hablar – hablaré etc.) Well, the conditional does exactly the same thing, and also has the same endings in all three verb groups, again like the future simple. Here are the endings: - ía

- íamos - ías - íais - ía - ían

So name any old verb and we’ll put it into the conditional. What about an “er” verb for a change? For example “leer” (to read). As far as the pronunciation is concerned, the most important thing to remember is to place the emphasis where the accent is, in each case over the letter “i”. Leería Leeríamos Leerías Leeríais Leería Leerían The irregular ones are exactly the same as in the future simple tense. For example: Decir – diría; hacer – haría; poder – podría, poner – pondría; querer – querría; saber – sabría; salir – saldría; tener – tendría; valer – valdría; venir – vendría. Finally, how do we use the conditional tense? Well, as I mentioned last week, the clue is in the name. It is called “conditional” because its use implies the existence of a condition. “I would read the book ….. if it were interesting; if I had the time”. “Leería el libro … si (if). And now we come across a

new problem, which is that the “if” clause (if it were, if I had etc.) takes us into yet another tense, and furthermore one of the hardest ones of all, namely the imperfect subjunctive - aaarrrghhhh!! However, do not panic, simply apply the KISS principle (Keep It Simple Stupid) and find a

way round it, using the word “pero” (but). “I would read the book, but it isn’t interesting” (Leería el libro, pero no es interesante). “I would read the book, but I haven’t got time” (Leería el libro, pero no tengo tiempo). I don’t know what you’d do without me; you would be very confused! - Estaríais muy confundidos.

Blast Brilliant Blessed Brian ONE YEAR AGO TODAY my first ramble appeared in the RTN. What a fine record of unremitting loyalty and devotion to duty. Where’s my gold watch? Also this month the Current & Final Mrs. Ashley and I are – celebrating??? - our silver wedding anniversary. This of course raises the thorny issue of an appropriate present. Baked fruity autumn pudding This pudding is bursting with autumn flavours, and can be made up to a day ahead - just reheat in the microwave. Ingredients 450g mixed autumn fruit - we used ripe plums, peeled apples, pears and blackberries 2 tbsp butter, plus extra for greasing 200g caster sugar 1 ½ tsp cinnamon 300g self-raising flour 140g shredded suet zest 1 lemon Method Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Cut 2 x 5cm-wide strips of parchment and lay them up the sides of a 1.2-litre pudding basin, making a cross on the bottom of the dish. Make sure there is some overhang to help you release the pudding when cooked. Grease again. Lay a square of foil and equalsize square of greased parchment on top of each other, folding a pleat down the middle. To make the filling, chop plums, apples and pears into 1cm cubes and place in a bowl with the blackberries. Add butter, broken into bits, 125g of sugar and cinnamon. Stir and put to the side.

Sift flour into mixing bowl. Mix in suet, remaining sugar and zest. Add a few drops of water, working it through with a cutlery knife, then keep adding water until you have soft dough. Using your hand, bring the dough together into a smooth ball. Tip out onto a lightly floured surface. Tear the dough into ¾ and ¼ parts. Roll the larger portion into a rough circle, approx 20cm. Drop into the basin and press up the sides until you have a slight overhang. Tip the filling into the pastry case. Roll out the remaining ¼ to make a lid, then press the pastry edges together to firmly seal. Tuck the protruding flaps of parchment down onto pastry. Put foil/parchment on top (foil side up), pressing and squeezing the foil round the edges to make a fitted lid. Tie string securely around the lid, making a handle with extra doubled-up string. Put in a deep roasting tin, then pour boiling water to 1-2cm below foil line. Cook for 2 hrs, topping up water level if it gets too low. Unwrap, release edges using parchment tabs and invert onto a plate.

Pego golf society Today Tuesday 4TH of October, we played a major competition called “The Committee Plate” which is a lovely trophy for the winner of the medal competition played today at Oliva Nova Golf Course. We had 36 members and guests available for this competition, and our guest today was Derek Lindley. We were greeted today with a lovely autumn morning with perfect weather for good scoring, so no excuse today. Winners 1st Place:- David Blakeley with a net 71 playing off 20.7 2nd Place:- Bill Pike with a net 72 playing off 15.4 3rd Place :- Roger Miller with a net 74 playing off 22.9 4th Place:- Patrick Lynch with a net 74 playing off 22 5th Place :- Mike Cuerden with a net 74 playing off 6.7 There was only one 2 today, and that was by Mike Cuerden who scooped the pool. The “Balls in the Water” prize was won today with 99 balls, and that was won by Mike Phillips, who won the roll over from last week and also this week’s pool. Nearest the hole at Hole 5 with their second shot was Steve Patton at 3.95 meters, , and at hole 16 the closest was Roger Miller with 2.23 meters. Peugeot 108 Push button starts are characteristic of older cars but they are increasingly making a come back. The latest Peugeot 108 city car incorporates one, together with keyless entry. This means that as long as the key is in the driver’s pocket, they can open the car and drive off (after putting their foot on the clutch and pushing start). One wet Wednesday morning when I take eldest daughter Harriett to school there is, all of a sudden, a frighteningly loud beep, which repeats for a few minutes. I don’t want to be late so I ignore it. We arrive some 10 minutes later in one piece with no punctures. Perplexed, I forget all about it until I return and push the start button. Only to find that a stop sign appears in capital letters on the dashboard. We are not going anywhere. Resisting the urge to phone the AA, I reach for the glovebox and delve into the user manual. Remaining calm I push the buttons on the keyfob together with the start button and thankfully am able to start the engine. Whether this is an electrical fault I do not know but the experience is one I do not wish to repeat. Give me a key ignition any day. Let’s get one other gripe out of the way. On installing my daughter’s cumbersome car seat in the rear it is clear that the 108 is just a tad too small for our family. Thank goodness we’re only driving short distances. Heidi would prefer my seat to be pushed further forward but I insist I can’t drive with my knees round my neck. I can feel her feet massaging the base of my spine through the thin seat. I keep reminding myself that this is a city car, not one for the family as such.

Aside from this there’s a good driving position and like its predecessor it’s enjoyable to drive, helped by the fact that it is quite low to the ground. I really do like this feisty little car that will reach 60mph from standstill in 11 seconds. The little Pug with its three cylinders roars with a slightly deeper rumble than your average lawnmower and it makes fast progress. The bars on the fuel gauge just do not seem to deplete, no matter how demanding the driving. It will reach just over 60mph in second gear… Because I am testing the Top! version it has an electric fabric roof, which no matter what the weather, is a delight to open (just turn up the heating if it’s cold outside). That roof also enables large items to be easily transported, such as a bath, for instance... The 108 replaces the much loved and successful 107 (launched in 2005 and in production until 2014). I have fond memories of driving the 107 across Europe. When my wife and I were married in Bulgaria, our little blue 107 even had wedding ribbon on the bonnet. It was the glass tailgate that was unique at the time and I am pleased to see that this has been carried over to the 108. During this test it really comes home to me just how overcrowded the UK has become. Drive during the day and you might as well not bother; the queues, the tailbacks and the learner drivers clogging up the road network. Yes, 20 years ago I was a learner driver but there were far fewer cars on the roads. Today, a 10 mile journey on B and C roads takes me close to an hour to travel during the day. Yet at night time it

can be achieved in well under half that time. This car excites me because it is visually very attractive, helped by its diamond white exterior and finished to a good standard. I like the chrome grille, door handles and wing mirrors. It adds a touch of class and promotes a welcome resurgence in its use. Peugeot has really struck gold with its tiny and elegant 108. Sticking rigidly to three criteria: affordable, modern and stylish it is a joy to behold. Overall, the goal of presenting a sophisticated and premium feel in a small car has been achieved. Giving4Giving set for a busy month by Caroline Tyszka THE GIVING4GIVING charity have already been out donating funds to many worthwhile causes with two more events added to the October calendar. On the last few days of September Gary from Giving4Giving donated 1,000 euros to a Macmillan coffee event - with the help of funds raised at the 2c’s in Alfaz del Pi race night - along with 1,000 euros to the MABS La Cala branch in memory of Cathy Humphreys – local reporter and fund raiser. Gary said: “MABS was one of Cathy’s favourite charities and when she died Giving4Giving said it would make a donation every year near her birthday, which we have gladly done.” The charity continues to help raise funds for local causes and, in addition to the Autumn White Star event announced last week, is hosting an evening of music on 28th October and a downhill bike ride on 30th October. The “Joy & Music” event on 28th at the Forum

Mare Nostrum in Alfaz del Pi will be raising funds for the Doggie Angells and Joy for Children charities. Tickets are 9 euros. Performing will be the Joyful Gospel Choir and the championship winning harmony group The Costa Barber Singers with Vince Tracy as compere. The sponsored downhill bike ride, just two days later, is raising funds for local girl Natasha Lynch (Tasha) who through illness now requires specialised and expensive equipment to help improve her quality of life. This event, at 11 am, will start and finish in Finestrat with riders meandering through 20 kilometres of beautiful countryside. All ages are welcome. Paella for charity A FEAST of paella was soon devoured in Albir on Monday - raising funds for Macmillan Cancer UK. The Café Paradise on the Albir playa hosted the event along with the organiser, Nicky Chapman, a regular customer of the café and local jam session planner on hand to serve the eagerly awaiting customers. Nick and Lilly, owners of the bar, donated all the takings from the sale of the traditional Spanish dish to the Macmillan Cancer UK fund. Nicky said: “I cannot thank everyone enough for attending and because of the wonderful donation of paella from the bar we raised an amazing 304 euros.”
